NOVEMBER 2013
Guy Fawkes Night: The memorial of a young man’s execution for his part in a plot against a ‘foreign’ king. Fawkes was radicalised abroad and convicted with the aid of evidence obtained through torture. His treachery is now marked with an ancient Chinese invention and bundled with a measurable amount of social and religious intolerance, whilst his image is used globally as a symbol against tyranny. You couldn’t find a more English event. That said, every Brighton resident should attend the spectacular Lewes celebrations at least once. Happy November SAVAGES PAGE 8

BLACK FRIDAY The Blind Tiger Fri 15 Nov
Hello November, and hello City Centre Christmas decorations!
It will be a Black Friday at The Blind Tiger on 15 Nov, when they’ll be hosting dual single and video premiers by Brighton’s blues stompers The Black Fields and local rock & rollers, Black Rooster Black Shag. It promises a mash up of beautiful people, colourful characters and the best vintage-inspired performances this side of the 70’s. Propelled by cinematic guitars that transport you straight into a whisky-soaked dive bar in the midst of Prohibition, The Black Fields have been bringing lawless Americana to Brighton for almost a decade. Their new single ‘Dig Billy Dig’ has been described as a gruff wild west pumping track and the video was written/produced/directed by their own percussionist, Cliff T and features intimate and never before seen footage of the band. Black Rooster Black Shag have ears a buzz with their debut single Amsterdam appearing everywhere from underground blogs to the NME since its July release. All driving rhythms and accentuated riffs, new single ‘Run Baby’ is more in line with their raucous live shows featuring boy/girl vocals drenched in layers of searing guitars and heavy rhythms.
People who live in Brighton are among the most anxious in the country, new ONS data showed recently. Where do they find these people? Did they only survey those who negotiate Seven Dials roadworks on a daily basis? The only blues we really care about are musical. BN1 is going all Rock and Roll for this issue. So we’ve gone all out to bring you interviews from Brit-Rock stalwarts Stereophonics, the indefinable Vuvuvultures and Mercury nominees Savages, who will all be playing shows in Brighton this month. We also get caught on Film, with a look at Oska Bright Film Festival and Cine City’s Brighton Film Festival, including legendary Czech filmmaker Jan Svankmajer.
As usual we’ve got the best guide to what’s going on in the City, some of it in a brand new sexy format. So read on, we’ve got plenty of reasons to be cheerful.

If you’re feeling peckish, we’ve been checking out the tasty treats on offer at the Fishbowl, The Connaught and Eastern Eye.
BRIGHTON MUSEUM DEAD LATE Brighton Museum Thu 7 Nov Brighton Museum and Art Gallery celebrates Mexican festival Day of the Dead on Thu 7 Nov with a special late opening on, in association with Writing Our Legacy and Latin Voices Live! There will be performance, drop-in dance, traditional storytelling, craft workshops, Mexican cocktails and a DJ set featuring traditional and contemporary Latin rhythms. Whilst it may seem macabre, the Day of the Dead festival is peppered with humour and is renowned for adopting a positive attitude to life and death. We can’t guarantee that the museum’s exhibits will come to life that night, but we’re sure there will be some magic of some kind in the air. virtualmuseum.info

BRIGHTON FRINGE REGISTRATION OPENS
Royal Pavilion 9 Nov - 19 Jan
City wide
Get your skates on! One of the City’s most popular seasonal attractions returns. The Royal Pavilion will provide a stunning setting for an ice rink on Sat 9 Nov Sun 19 Jan
Whereas we may not have finished with this one, Brighton Fringe are already thinking about next year. England’s largest independent arts festival has just opened registration for 2014, so if you’ve got a unique project, show or venue, now is the time to get involved. Running between Sat 3 May – Sun 1 June 2014, Brighton Fringe remains accessible for everyone and offers participants the opportunities to develop and take quality work out beyond Brighton and Hove. Following it this year, the openaccess festival will again incorporate May half-term and both bank holidays. All participants benefit from professional advice, support and resources offered by Brighton Fringe, including free Take Part 2014 workshops with expert speakers, one-on-one advice, searchable venue directory, media contact list and networking with local, national and international producers to help get their show on the road, reach audiences and get noticed by both the industry and the media. Any interested candidates have until 31 January to register their interest.
Easily the most scenic place you can ice-skate in the South East, if not Western Europe, this stunning, twinkly, romantic (and child-friendly) offering is topped off with beautiful food in the rink-side bar and restaurant. The attraction is also the UK’s first ever ‘green rink’, using a green energy tariff, to freeze the ice and power the infrastructure. www.royalpavilionicerink.co.uk

HACKTIVIST Audio // Tue 19 Nov
On Mon 11 Nov, Hacktivist release the “EP+” minialbum to coincide with their first full UK headline tour (with special guests, The Algorithm) which comes to Brighton’s Audio on Tue 19 Nov. The release collects and re-masters their debut EP (long sold out of its original CD format, and deleted in digital form), along with a selection of bonus tracks; most notably a live version of ‘Blades’, and a Shikari Sound System Remix of the single ‘Elevate’, both previously unreleased, alongside the original ‘Elevate’ single and a remix of ‘Unlike Us’. This five piece from Buckinghamshire fuse the groove, attitude and brutality of Metal, Grime, Hardcore and Hip-Hop, to create their own sound, the band have excited and divided audiences across the UK in equal measure. www.hacktivist.uk.com
THE RIFLES Concorde 2 // Mon 13 Nov The Rifles return with their fourth studio album ‘None the Wiser’, released on Mon 20 Jan 2014 via Cooking Vinyl. To get us in the mood they’ll be touring the country this month, with a date at Concorde 2 on Mon 13 Nov
HACKTIVIST © JORDAN GREEN
The album finds the Folk-tinged Indie popsters on fine form, having now reverted to their original line-up. Their trademark sound remains, but the band have broadened their musical palette, drawing influence from, in their own words: “Bob Dylan, Talking Heads, some Clash and as always - the Beatles.” It was produced by Dave McCracken (Ian Brown), plus Jamie Ellis and Charles Reece at Paul Weller’s Black Barn Studios. With consistently respectable chart entries and a huge, loyal fanbase (that to this day sees the band selling out venues like London’s’ Forum), The Rifles combine genuine songwriting talent and unwavering creativity,

DILATED PEOPLES The Haunt // Tue 19 Nov
FRYARS The Haunt // Mon 25 Nov
Every Hip-Hop fan in the City probably already knows this… The classic Hip-Hop crew Dilated Peoples are coming to The Haunt, on Tue 19 Nov, to show us how you do it Old School. Formed over twenty years ago, DJ Babu, Evidence and Iriscience effortlessly prove that their early Hip Hop philosophy can still cut it in the 21st Century, and that it is possible to have commercial success without musical compromise. There’ll be no corporate rap nonsense in sight, as this West Coast collective will be hyping up an adoring crowd with classic tunes like Neighbourhood Watch, Live on Stage and the world-famous Worst Comes to Worst. In addition they’ll hopefully be unleashing some tracks from their forthcoming album, Directors of Photography, their first since 2008.
MY LIFE STORY Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar // Sat 16 Nov After injecting badly needed glamour into an increasingly dreary 90’s British Indie scene, scoring a few Top 40 singles and a couple of hit albums, the high kicking and BIMM illuminate Jake Shillingford‘s My Life Story split up in 2000. All dramatic lyrics, lush string arrangements and massive tunes, My Life Story almost wrote the blueprint for all future cinematic Pop acts, yet curiously never grabbed the success they deserved. Since then they’ve popped up for a few sparkling reunion shows, some to support compilation albums, and some just to ensure they don’t fade completely from everyone’s memories. This year, by our reckoning, it must be 20 years since their formation, so get ready for a celebratory tour, which will be calling in at Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar on Sat 16 Nov. Catch them now, in case there’s no next time! mylifestory.uk.com
Anyone who saw London Grammar last month hopefully got to see the excellent support act Fryars. We’ve been hearing a lot about his Psychedelic Pop recently, and now his EP Radio PWR has been released. The musical brainchild of London-based 22 year old Benjamin Garrett, Fryars first emerged with a highly acclaimed set of selfreleased bedroom recordings. Produced by long-term collaborator Luke Smith (Foals, Depeche Mode), ‘The Power’ comes in the wake of recent critically acclaimed tracks ‘Cool Like Me’ & ‘On Your Own.’ Fryars peerless sound recalls the best Twentieth Century pop writers such as Harry Nilsson and Randy Newman, but refracted through the prism of crisp, cutting-edge future production. With an album release on the horizon in 2014, Fryars will be supporting Summer Camp through November, including a Brighton show on Mon 24 Nov at The Haunt.
Har Mar Superstar The Prince Albert // Sun 24 Nov Somewhere back in time, Stevie Wonder and Ron Jeremy had a love-child. Now their R&B sex-bomb offspring travels the planet, bringing his lewd retro-styled three minute works of genius to a love-starved population. So he’s not breakdancing in a thong anymore, but even if he’s trying to break out as a serious artist Har Mar Superstar is still more than capable of thrilling the ladies. Brimming with blithe sexual confidence and a soulful streak that Justin Timberlake can only dream of, Mr Superstar is one of those acts that you only fully understand when you’ve caught him live. Somehow, in the booking of the century, he’s coming to The Prince Albert on Sun 24 Nov. Whilst some stupidly see him as a novelty, the reality is he’s an enormously talented R&B singer/songwriter, and no-one will work harder to please you.

SAVAGES “Find out more about yourself... But know you’re never going to find out everything.”
BY STUART ROLT
I’d asked Savages’ guitarist Gemma Thompson for an all-encompassing quote on the meaning of life, which she was happy to provide, but only if it got presented as some form of headline. She seemed like the person to ask, simply because she’s brimming with opinions on so many subjects; from how to keep a tidy mind to how a real band should approach their music. To say the interview was an exhilarating experience would be an understatement. As, just like her band’s songs, our conversation was a rush of ideas and statements. Taking an explorative attitude to music inspired by form 70’s American New Wave and combining it with the personal politics touted by bands like Public Enemy and The Clash, the Mercury Prize nominated Savages make it very clear where their ambitions lie. “We are serious in what we do,” Gemma tells me. “We’re playing Rock and Roll at the end of the day, which is a wonderful emotional outburst. You can do so much, and enjoy yourself so much with it. But you do need to carry yourself.’’
Formed in 2011 by Gemma, Ayse Hassan (bass), Fay Milton (drums), and Jehnny Beth (vocals) they’re the bright new ‘Serious Band’ on the block. “We’re not doing this just to be in a band. We’re trying to push what playing music can be in a way. Music as a genre is treated quite badly. The idea of an artist is to make the audience see what their lives really are, you need to be serious about this. “You can’t just sit and focus on planning, you have to think about the industry, you have to follow your instincts and keep true to the music, when people all around you are giving you their opinions. You have to be very strong minded to do this, so of course people are going say you’re angry young women.” Silence Yourself is an energetic and striking debut, full of prickly guitars and nods to primal classic Punk. They’ve spent a lot of time ensuring that it goes some way to recreate the atmosphere and brilliance of the Savage’s live experience. “Everything was very thought through for the album. We prepared for several months before, and actually worked on it solidly for three weeks. “We really thought of it as being like a document to show how the songs had evolved as live performances. So tracklisting was very important, partly based on how we would
BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 9 ]

play in a set, how it would flow, and how we’d grab the audience’s attention. For every tiny detail we sat down and worked it out, like the artwork and what was written on the sleeve. It was our main preoccupation.” Undoubtedly there will be some that dismiss Savages as ‘simply feminists’, as if that is somehow a derogatory term, but the scope of their ambition goes far beyond defining gender roles. Every aspect of their existence concerns itself with achieving perfection and providing empowerment. This band asks the listener to be the best they can be. Are they trying to be more than just a band, are they supplying the roots for some kind of political movement? “We’re not completely political, but from the start we wanted to focus on the energy of the performance, on finishing the writing of the music onstage. “As we moved forward, we released a single and needed a press release. So Jen wrote a kind of beginning statement, which said: ‘We choose to play music louder and faster. We choose to use repetition.’ It was just a few words about how we go about what we do.” Preconceptions about the band probably aren’t helped by the austere nature of their press images, the majority
of which feature the band captured unsmiling in black and white. Is it possible you can read too much into how a simple image looks though? “I don’t smile anyway. It comes from seeing bands like Swans and Portishead. They have this idea of musicians as being like workers. “They’re really particular about their craft, focusing on every single sound and how it all works together. That’s what it’s about, thinking about it so much that you become immersed in it. That’s how we see it. Aesthetically we wear black and keep it minimalist on a lot of things. We’re not here to go and get drunk and throw ourselves around, we’re here to really think about we’re doing, and how you can take such a primal thing such as drums, guitars and vocals and push it further. You need intent to do that.” They’re not aggressively enforcing any concept or ideals on their fans, they’re just doing what they do. So if you’re switched on enough to join in, then good for you. Savages certainly have plenty to say: I hope for your sake you’ve been paying attention. Savages play Concorde 2, Brighton on Tuesday 5th of November. Their debut LP Silence Yourself, is out right now. www.savagesband.com

PLASTICINE
MOUNT KIMBIE – Concorde 2 PLASTICINE Dreamers of the Day Plasticine are a charismatic Brighton-based collective known for emotive songs that are crafted through escapist lyricism, soaring guitar lines and robotic grooves. Featuring Andrew Gray on vocals and guitar, Rob Dawson on Lead Guitar, Alex Eusden on Bass and Jimmy Ward on Drums, they’ve made giant strides in 2013, winning fans at festivals like Victorious and The Great Escape. Their track Hard Being Strange was featured on One Inch Badge’s Sea Monsters 3 compilation album which was released to international acclaim earlier this year. Plasticine have just released their debut single Dreamers of the Day as a free-download, which was recorded locally, which has seen the band keep the balance between the raw emotive power of their live sets and experimenting with modern production techniques. Plasticine are following up this release with a support slot with Girls Names at the Green Door Store on Sat 2 Nov. www.facebook.com/plasticineband
As part of their mission to establish themselves as world-class electronic artists, Mount Kimbie come to Concorde 2 on Wed 6 Nov. Crooks and Lovers, their debut full-length LP, was an eclectic mix of Dubstep, Indie and R&B, the album didn’t sound like anything anyone had heard before, so they found themselves with fans in many different scenes. Kai Campos and Brighton-lad Dominic Maker’s ear for a quality tune, no matter what style it may be, is what makes this outfit so good. Their follow-up, Cold Spring Fault Less Youth, display a huge leap forward in studio finesse, featuring moments of musical brilliance, like Break Well, and Made To Stray shows that this odd couple aren’t just a flash in the pan. Mount Kimbie play Concorde 2 on Wed 6 Nov. Their album, Cold Spring Fault Less Youth, is out now. www.mountkimbie.com
THE MOJO FINS – Introverts Video Following on from their recent teaser clip, Brighton rockers The Mojo Fins’ new video Introverts, comes the full-blown version directed by Phil Sansom of Phix Film. The video has been shot in the Welsh countryside whilst the band took a break from recording their upcoming third album at the legendary Rockfield Studios with Manic Street Preachers and Idlewild producer Dave Eringa. The Award winning Phix Film, who have shot videos for The Maccabees, The Enemy & The Cribs use sweeping shots of open landscape that build in the song’s sense of drama, working perfectly with its lyric, inspired by the Susan Cain book Quiet: The Power of Introverts In a World That Can’t Stop Talking. SIGUR ROS The brilliant Sigur Rós are a band that deliver lengthy orchestral soundscapes, with lyrics that are sung in “Hopelandic”-a constructed language that employs glossolalia (the fluid vocalisation of speech-like syllables that lack an easily comprehensible meaning). This inspired linguistic device allows listeners of any nationality to derive a personal, and often beautiful meaning. Now this might not sound like a recipe for an international best-selling act, but Sigur Rós have established themselves as one of the most recognisable names on the Post-Rock scene. Now undergoing their most profound change since swapping the nebulous clouds of debut Von for the careermaking beauty of Ágætis Byrjun 15 years ago, the band are out on the road. With a freshly- tweaked line-up and a fearsome new album, they’ll be coming to The Brighton Centre on Wednesday 20th of November. For many, their first exposure to Sigur Rós will have been through the BBC’s liberal use of Hoppípolla during the Planet Earth TV series. Whilst it certainly brought them to the attention of a greater audience than any clever marketing campaign could provide, it permanently linked them, in the minds of the public, to images of crashing waves and majestic scenery. Rather than shying from this association, the band have embraced it by enlisting artists to illustrate every track on their 2012 album Valtari, thus reinforcing the relationship between their music and beautiful visuals forever. Following Valtari, Sigur Rós shed their keyboardist and headed back to the studio for some serious reinvention.
WED 20 NOV - BRIGHTON CENTRE
This year’s release Kveikur, their seventh LP, comes after the shortest turnaround of any Sigur Rós album, and shows a band operating out of their comfort zone, but thriving despite their circumstances. Although containing many of the bands trademark musical elements, it stands out as being distinctively progressive. It could be argued the new-found trio is on the offensive now. The album’s guitars certainly sound angrier and the tempo of the songs have picked up from previous releases. Tellingly, in English, ‘Valtari’ translates as “Steamroller” and there is something right about the title in terms of the process of its creation, and the attitude of its creators. Valtari is a strikingly arranged, engrossing album. From the sulky and melodic opener Brenninstein, to the chugging pop and primal vocals on Stormur, this is a band that is unafraid to mix the organic with the alien; which is why we love them. Sigur Rós play Brighton Centre on Wed 20 Nov. Valtari is out now on EMI Records. www.sigur-ros.co.uk

MALOOLAH BAH There’s nothing we love more at BN1 than a good cocktail, so we’ve been frequenting Preston Street’s Maloolah Bah. This beautifully presented bar offers a modern mix with a classical touch This sophisticated and stylish new venue is open seven days a week, offering the discerning customer a dazzling array of cocktails, craft beers, premium beers and ales, a wide variety of quality wines and spirits. They’ve also got great entertainment every night. Monday nights are Open Mic, where almost anything goes, Tues are set for Cocktail offers, meaning even the most cash strapped can add a bit a glamour to their lives, whilst Weds will bring live music to the bar. Thurs sees a weekend warm-up, Fri plays host to La Familias House grooves and Sat is full of banging tunes, rounding off the week with a chill out session on Sun. Owner Matthew Funnell got the name from a place he used to love in Australia. His goal is to create somewhere up market, but inclusive. So here’s a comfortable cocktail bar, that isn’t too cheesy (there’s no screaming hen do’s) and caters for everyone. Now we’ve got somewhere you can get dressed up for and feel classy in the heart of Brighton. www.maloolahbah.com

ANDREW O’NEILL: Easily Distracted 6 November Three and Ten
St. John’s School and College presents a night of oddball comedy to raise funds for new sensory equipment at Komedia on Mon 4 Nov. Think You’ve Got Problems?! will feature a performance from internationally renowned comedian Francesca Martinez (as seen on Extras, Grange Hill and Russell Howard’s Good News) plus support from Jen Brister and Steve Day. St. John’s is a nonmaintained special school and independent specialist college. Their students have a wide range of complex learning disabilities including young people who may have difficulties resulting from behavioural, emotional and social difficulties. The night will be hosted by WitTank’s very own Naz Osmanoglu. www.andrewoneill.co.uk
It’s has to be a tough job being a traffic warden. You have to look far and wide before you’d find anyone with a good word for them. Unless, that is, you catch High Vis on Tue 5 Nov at Upstairs at Three and Ten. Written and performed by Robert Cohen, this is the tragicomic tale of Quint - a traffic warden under siege.
Komedia
As he shelters reluctantly from an airgunwielding stalker, Quint will teach you all he knows about traffic management.... and much, much more besides. Just don’t forget to feed that meter.
How about if you’re struggling to maintain concentration for long enough to get any work done? Andrew O’Neill has suffered from this, so he’s decided to write about the fact that he was struggling to maintain concentration long enough to write a new comedy show. You can check out this fresh and exciting comic’s new show, Easily Distracted, on Wed 6 Nov at Komedia, in a show that’s full of optimism and absurdity. One of the most hilarious, fascinating and multi-layered comedians around, O’Neill was nominated Best Comedy - Adelaide Fringe AND Buxton Fringe.

STEPHEN LYNCH LIVE
9 November
10 November Three and Ten
Gavin Osborn brings his minutely-detailed, bittersweet musical stories to Upstairs at Three and Ten, on Fri 9 Nov. Armed only with a collection of songs chock-full of intelligence, honesty and wit, and his guitar, this touchingly quirky comic songwriter has been blowing minds and breaking hearts at Latitude, Green Man and Meadowlands festival this year.
11 November Komedia
The Old Market
Fast-paced action-packed comedy, all based on audience suggestions, comes to Komedia on Sun 10 Nov. Fresh from a five-star sell-out smash at the Edinburgh Fringe, Racing Minds present an improvised comic adventure. But who knows where this critically acclaimed long-form improv quartet will end up taking us?
Stephen Lynch brings his original blend of music-based comedy once again to the stages of the UK, making a trip to The Old Market, on Mon 11 Nov. Born and raised in Saginaw, Michigan Stephen Lynch is the son of a former nun and priest. While growing up he admits that he loved entertaining his family and friends, and that hobby stuck with him through adulthood. In 2006, Stephen Lynch stepped onto the Broadway stage for the first time in the title role of The Wedding Singer. His performance earned him nominations for some of the highest honours in American Theatre, including the highly coveted Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical. www.theoldmarket.com
He’s toured with Belle & Sebastian and written songs for shows with Daniel Kitson, those of you in the know will know how big a deal that is.

BY STUART ROLT With a catalogue of classic singles that examine and often celebrate the intricacies of mundane small-town life, Stereophonics have enamoured themselves with British music fans. They’ve proved their consistency of form with the release of their eighth album, this year’s Graffiti on the Train. Now they’re busy taking that album around the world, including a 12 date UK arena tour which brings them to the Brighton Centre on Thu 21 Nov. We seized the opportunity to talk to the band’s bassist, Richard Jones, and ask him if he’s enjoying all the touring: “It’s been really good. We’ve done stuff all over the UK, been to Australia, Japan and just got back from North American tour a last week. “It’s been really weird; everyone knew all the new stuff. It’s always great touring America. It’s such a big place, plus it’s always such a rush trying to conquer somewhere.” Formed in 1992 in the Welsh village of Cwmaman, Stereophonics founding members Kelly Jones (lead vocals and guitar) and Richard (bass) have seen their brand of ‘goodtime British Rock music’ land five consecutive UK number one albums and spread their name across the world. As elder statesmen of Rock, they must have seen some big changes in the way their industry operates: “The internet and everything is a great tool, it opens up such a wider
audience. They can make their own videos and get those up on the internet. In our day it was just about getting a bunch of mates together and filming yourselves doing a performance. “The main things which have changed now, are with talent shows like the X-Factor and Pop Idol and all that, people think that is an inroad to the concept of being in band. It’s all entertainment, but some of bands don’t get the grounding that a lot of grass roots musicians get. Across the new album the band’s arrangements are more triumphant, almost cinematic. The flourishes of collaborator David Arnold, who arranged many of the tracks string sections, are evident. But deep at the heart of most of them are the familiar Stereophonics themes of contemplation and melancholy. There are plenty of instant classics here, and it seems there is plenty of inspiration to be seized from examinations of everyday mendacities. So how does a band balance writing songs about the drudgeries of a parochial existence, when colossal album sales must afford a decent standard of living? Jones laughs this off: “I think the lyrics and the way we write song reflects our experiences and what we’ve learnt in the last 20 or 30 years. “We’ve been really fortunate to have the success, like you said, to have sold lots of albums. But we want the band to be the best we can be, we can’t be reliant on our past catalogue, so we’re always trying to better ourselves for people.’’

STEREOPHONICS It transpires that Graffiti on the Train is only the first ten in a batch of forty songs that were written at the same time. Is this mammoth selection going to be released in its entirety, or will other newer songs start creeping in? “The next batch should be getting released late next year. It’s seems like your wishing your life away when you do things like this. But you’ve just got to enjoy it, and not question why it has to be like that. “Unfortunately for us we’ve learnt the hard way. But we love what we do, we realised that as soon as we got a record deal that was just the start of our bands career there was a lot or hard work and effort just to get people to hear your music. But as long as you’re enjoying it…” In typical fashion, and because everything has to be done bigger and better for this band, Kelly Jones made short films for every track on the album. Now the title track from Graffiti on the Train, reportedly inspired by some young
scallywags trespassing on the rail line behind Kelly’s house, is having its narrative undergoing development into a fullfledged film script. “The script has been an on-going thing for the last two years. The song is the best symposia for what the film is about. “ If it’s the infuriatingly beguiling recent single, Indian Summer, or the timeless classics like Have A Nice Day, Stereophonics still remain heartfelt and relevant, which is why they have such a large legion of die-hard devotees. They’ve spent over 20 years conjuring eloquent daydreams that offer a simple three minutes of escapism from a place you never expected to find yourself. Isn’t that the job of any great Rock band?
Stereophonics play Brighton Centre on Thu 21 Nov, and their Album, Graffiti on the Train, is out now.

VUVUVU VUVUVULTURES There’s a small part in all of us that wants to keep guessing what an act is going to produce next. It’s that air of unknowing that generates excitement. So how about the spell-check defying Vuvuvultures, and their genrehopping brand of Noise/Art/Pop/Rock? They’ve just released a fierce debut album, Push/Pull, so it seemed right to call Nicole from the band… and avoid asking her what sort of music she thinks the band makes.
However I do want to know if they actually sit down and write their tunes, or whether they just evolve out of a nine hour free-flowing noise session. “It’s actually pretty organic,” the band’s Nicole Bettencourt Coelho laughs. “We all just get into a room and start fiddling with an idea. We all work on our own little parts, like drums, and then add some production. “We’re definitely just having fun with it. There’s yet to be a day when someone walks in with an acoustic guitar and goes: ‘Hey man! Let’s use four chords!’” This London four piece act have certainly struck upon something unique. Sure, they’ve got plenty of reference points sprinkled throughout their music, but simultaneously they really don’t sound like anything else. Featuring Harmony Boucher on vocals, Nicole Bettencourt Coelho handling the bass, Paul Ressel doing guitars and Matthew Christensen hammering the drums, they produce a fuzzy, genre-bending Electro-Metal, with their singles backed by some pretty freakish videos. So is there a direct influence the band can cite for this curious controlled chaos? “We all have different tastes in music, the one thing we tend to come together on is all the Seventies stuff, like Zepp and Floyd, so that approach to music is the way we think of music. “Harmony is obsessed with Pop, I like lots of Metal and Paul’s like an electronic music head. I don’t think we have a hero that we’re aiming at. We’re all just big music fans and we’re always looking for new stuff.” Push/Pull is a work alive with lush and layered production with a consistent, metallic tone running through it. This punchy and sweepingly original album is full of short songs that build up steadily, and proudly establishes itself as a small victory for anyone that dare think differently about how music should be made. “Writing the album and doing all the pre-production stuff was done over time. But actually going into the studio was pretty hectic. “We basically had a day and half to do all the drums and bass, one for guitars, one for vocal and one for everything else. It was pretty intense; we definitely had to hug it out a
ULTURES few times. Then a lot of time was spent on the mixing. The engineer we were working with was pretty pedantic, so he spent lots of time. It was a cool but long process“
From the evocative Tell No One, the stupidly catchy Steel Bones and even the band’s most ‘Pop’ song, Another Hit, the album could fool you into thinking you’re listening to a release from a bunch of veterans. There’s a certain consistency to its sound and its intriguing melange of influences, which somehow resists falling into complete disarray.
Somewhere they find the time to run The Island, a themed club night in a variety of unusual London locations, so you get the idea there is a strong ‘D.I.Y’ ethic running through all their work. “It’s a lot of work. A lot of the stuff we’ve done has involved a learning process. “We started our own label and started putting on events, so most of it has been trial and error. I don’t know if it’s been like we thought it would be, but we were always like: ‘Let’s do it!” So how do you work on transferring these menacing, intelligent pop sounds into a live arena? Some of the arrangements on the album are incredibly complex. How does it work, and remain a great live experience, without dragging banks of dusty synthesisers around the country? ”The main reason we do is it is to play live and experiment with songs. It’s quite a challenge to do the songs live, but it is really fun”. “When we first started we had the choice of either getting two more people or playing with a backing track. We hated playing with a backing track, so now we’ve got this thing called ‘The Appliance of Science’, which is a whole bunch of pedals and an iPad. It’s been a little adventure. People say it’s more aggressive, but I think it’s just louder. But pretty much every gig we’ve played has been approached differently- even the instruments have been changed. We strip it back quite a lot, and then sometimes add completely new things.”
Vuvuvultures play The Green Door Store on Wed 20 Nov Their album, Push/Pull, is out now
They might be the odd- kids who are mixing up musical tastes that few can understand, but you can’t deny they’re wonderfully unique; the compulsion is always there to have another listen, to check if maybe that song really is that great. Somehow these mavericks make you care about them and their music. “I hope so, because we going to keep doing it. We’re pretty much still experimenting with our sound and what we want to achieve. There’s no fixed agenda with what we want to do.” BY STUART ROLT

CINECITY THE BRIGHTON FILM FESTIVAL
‘Adventures in World Cinema’ has been announced as the theme of Cinecity, The 11th Brighton Film Festival, which opens on Thursday 14th of November with a special preview of Alexander Payne’s bittersweet and awardwinning road movie Nebraska.
There is a strong line-up of work from Brighton-based directors including The Man Whose Mind Exploded, directed by Toby Amies. His debut feature documentary is a tender portrait of a Brighton outsider, Drako Zarhazar, who suffered from anterograde amnesia and was unable to create new memories.
The festival runs until Sunday 1st of December and features a packed programme of premieres, previews, treasures from the archive and free education screenings at the Duke of York’s Picturehouse, Dukes@Komedia and pop-up venues across the City.
Brighton three-piece Esben And The Witch give a live performance of their brand-new musical score to La Antena; a surreal sci-fi tale about a city reduced to silence.
Opening night is always a highlight of Cinecity, which last year featured Colin Farrell in ‘Seven Psychopaths’, so there are high expectations for Nebraska: nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival where leading man Bruce Dern was crowned ‘Best Actor’.
Eagerly anticipated British film screenings in Cinecity include: Leviathan - winner of Best British Film at this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival, Joanna Hogg’s highly anticipated third feature Exhibition and Ralph Fiennes’ The Invisible Woman, which examines the secret love affair between Charles Dickens (Fiennes) and the young actress Nelly Ternan (Felicity Jones).
The festival celebrates not only home-grown cinema, including films from Brighton-based directors, but looks further afield. This year’s Cinecity features the most international selection to date, with films from Singapore, Laos, Kurdistan, China, Iran, India, Israel and Mexico, as well as Poland, Czech Republic, Scandinavia, France and the US.
Late night horror comes from a new print of classic ‘Ozploitation’ thriller Wake In Fright - described by Cinecity patron Nick Cave as “the best and most terrifying film about Australia in existence.”
Continuing the international theme, a major celebration of the work of the legendary Czech surrealist Jan Švankmajer is at the heart of the festival – including an exhibition at the University of Brighton that features sets, puppets, costumes, and artwork from many of his acclaimed films including Alice, Punch and Judy and Little Otik that were a major influence on directors such Tim Burton, Terry Gilliam and the Quay Brothers. A complete retrospective of Jan Švankmajer’s six feature films and 26 shorts, alongside a programme of talks and discussions is also planned.
The festival concludes with a screening of The Double, a doppelganger comedy drama from director Richard Ayoade, at the Duke of York’s on Sunday 1 December. Tickets for all screenings are on sale now, and further details are available from www.cine-city.co.uk

FILM
CARRIE ON SCREAMING By Wayne Imms
Coinciding with the new version of Carrie, released this month, based on Stephen King’s classic novel, Auteur Publishing has just brought out Devil’s Advocates: Carrie. The excellent book covers director Brian De Palma’s 1976 classic, which is certainly one of my favourite horror films. It provides a fascinating insight into Carrie, its background and the making of the film, along with an analysis and a personal appreciation from the author Neil Mitchell. Neil is a freelance writer and editor based in Brighton. He is the editor of The Big Picture magazine, the co-editor of Directory of World Cinema: Britain and the editor of the London and Melbourne editions of the World Film Locations series, all for Intellect Books. He has written, in print or online, for Total Film, Little White Lies, The Guardian and Electric Sheep. I asked Neil for his thoughts on the original film and about the book, Devil’s Advocates: Carrie. For you, what makes Carrie such a powerful film? I think it’s the fact that nobody is left unscarred by what unfolds; they are either killed or, in Sue Snell’s case, left psychologically disturbed. That’s pretty unforgiving – young and old, intimately involved or a bystander, antagonistic or well meaning, they all pay a heavy price for the cruelty dished out to Carrie White. In the introduction to your book you touch upon your overriding sense of sadness for the character’s isolation. It’s a key element of the film, which I totally understand. Carrie, played brilliantly by Sissy Spacek, is a character that we have a lot of sympathy for, isn’t she? We do, it’s a canny trick De Palma and Spacek pulled off. In the novel, King makes her a lot less sympathetic. In the movie, however, most of us will either relate to or empathise with Carrie. We all have either been Carrie at some point or known a Carrie – male or female – the runt of the class, always the punchline, forever the outsider. If we’re honest, most of us will also have probably joined in with ridiculing those figures as well. Of course, the most complex part of our relating to or sympathising with Carrie is that she goes on to massacre everyone, leaving us repulsed by her as well.
Piper Laurie was, of course, Oscar-nominated for her performance as Carrie’s mum. She was a bitch, wasn’t she? I’m not sure that’s the word I would use to describe Margaret White. I see her as being equally as lost and alienated as her daughter. Margaret means well, she’s just so damaged, so consumed by her religious fantaticism that she can’t see past it. She’s not ‘evil’; the novel and film are way subtler than that. Margaret’s wrong-headed, out-oftouch, over bearing and manipulative, but she’s clearly also a victim in the narrative – of her own upbringing and failed marriage. How would you describe the director, Brian De Palma’s style, particularly for Carrie? Of course, he’s known for a split-screen technique, which was used rather effectively in this film. It’s funny, I think the split-screen sequence in Carrie is effective too, De Palma, on the other hand, has since called it a ‘great mistake’, believing it takes the viewer out of what is happening. He’s a grandiose film-maker, very operatic. Slow motion, split-dioptre shots, canted angles, 360 degree camera movements – he draws attention to the film-making, but always in a way that complements the story in question. He really is a master of creating suspense and tension – visually and aurally – which he does so well in the prom sequence in Carrie. In fact, just about everything you would mark down as being anachronistic about De Palma’s directing style can be seen in that sequence. What were the main differences between Stephen King’s novel and the film? Aside from Carrie White being less sympathetic and physically different – in King’s work she is chubby and dark haired- the novel’s flashback structure was totally jettisoned for the film. Also the widespread destruction of the town that Carrie wreaks in the novel is absent in De Palma’s adaptation; budgetary constraints put pay to that. Faulty equipment saw scenes De Palma had shot of stones raining down on the White household – at the beginning and during the climax of the novel – dropped from the film… although you can see some stones coming through the ceiling when the White household is destroyed.

Describe the process of writing the book. Was it enjoyable and how much of a challenge was it, if at all? It was hugely enjoyable, and a challenging too. I’ve edited a few film-books but this was my first solo authored project. Research is key, I spent a long time preparing – re-reading the novel, watching the film again, devouring everything I could find that had been written about both and De Palma’s career (there’s a lot), and then amalgamating that into what I personally thought about the film, about what it means to me. John Atkinson, the head honcho of Auteur Publishing, wanted the Devil’s Advocates series to be a mix of the personal and the academic – the format works well in my opinion. Some days I wrote for hours, sometimes I’d stare at the page blankly, I guess that happens to most writers. I’m itching to write another and have a few projects on the horizon. What would you say is the film’s most shocking scene? It’s a film full of shocking scenes – the ‘plug-it-up’ sequence at the beginning, the prom night massacre and the handout-of-the-grave scene at the end – but the one that always gets me is, in comparison, relatively tame, but I find it horrid. It’s when Margaret throws her tea into Carrie’s face, it’s so contemptuous, disrespectful and abrupt. It’s obviously symbolic too: Margaret is literally pouring scorn on her daughter’s desire to go to the prom and be ‘normal’ like the other kids. It’s the banal, pitiful reality of it, who’d want to live a life like that? Would you say that Carrie has the acclaim and popularity that it deserves? Well, it regularly appears in ‘best of’ horror lists, not so often in general ‘best of’ lists though. It’s a masterpiece in my eyes, regardless of whatever genre it’s classified under. Horror is still wrongly seen in some critical quarters as somehow less deserving of serious critical appreciation and De Palma has never been fully embraced into the bosom of Hollywood. There has been a lot of academic
work written about the film and its director though, and it’s still widely read and watched. Carrie and De Palma’s body of work have longevity – that’s success. Why do you think the seventies was a significant decade for horror films? It was a combination of things – the end of the old Hollywood studio system meant that the young ‘New Hollywood’ directors and producers could take more risks on a film-making front. The studios also wanted to draw in youthful audiences (the ones with the disposable income). Films like Deep Throat had played in mainstream cinemas and more graphic horror movies from Europe had made their way across the pond as well. Add that to the turbulent social, cultural and political climate in the US, and that 70’s horror was dominated by US releases, the era was ripe for extreme, explicit movies. The death of the hippy dream, the Manson family murders, the war in Vietnam, Watergate – the US was a country in spiritual crisis in the 70’s (as it is now) – and film-makers voiced this with movies such as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The Hills Have Eyes, The Last House on the Left and Carrie. What are your expectations regarding the new version of Carrie? I hope Kimberley Pierce gives us her take on King’s source material – not her version of De Palma’s take on it – that would be disastrous. She’s a good director and from what I’ve read it is much more a retake than a remake. I love De Palma’s movie but am intrigued to see what Pierce and her cast have created. Casting Julianne Moore as Margaret White is fantastic, though both she, and Chloe Grace Moretz as Carrie, have some going to match Laurie and Spacek’s performances. I hope they keep the CGI to a minimum, I like my special effects old school. Devil’s Advocates: Carrie is published by Auteur www.auteur.co.uk

THE CONNAUGHT n e h c t i dK BY LUCY HALLETT
Pub an
Last night I had a dream about Tom Hardy. In itself not a strange occurrence; this is probably dream number 74 pertaining to Tom Hardy. What was strange, however, is that he presented me with a plate of food, and whispered sexily ‘‘Eat it Lucy, go on….’’ I can’t pretend to be somebody that studies dreams in detail, so maybe this dream has far-reaching implications that I can’t even begin to understand, but as I awoke, and tumbled out of bed in a fashion that would make Vanessa Feltz feel elegant, I realised something- I was most definitely hungry. Being as I’m a late sleeper, or in other words lazy, I had completely missed the opportunity of breakfast, so decided to go for a hearty lunch instead.
Special Lunch Menu that runs from Monday to Friday 12-3pm. Two courses are £12, and three courses are £15, so I metaphorically patted myself on the head for being so cost conscious. With three or four options per course, there was a good selection, but I definitely have my food favourites, so knew what I was going to eat pretty much straight away. I started with Mozarella Crostini with a sun-blushed tomato and olive salsa. The Crostini itself was light and nicely seasoned. The mozarella was gooey, unctuous and very tasty. I really liked the salsa which cut through the richness of the cheese; the addition of slithers of red onion and pea shoots being a particularly inspired touch.
The Connaught on Hove Street is the sort of pub that emanates the fact it serves good food. I don’t know why, but after doing this reviewing malarkey for a while, one does get a sort of sixth sense about these things. The yummy smells wafting round the place certainly added to this impression, as did the fact that a very large proportion of the customers were eating- always a good sign. As pubs go, this is one with a very chilled, familyfriendly vibe. Large, dark, rustic tables work well with the light green walls. While I was there The Smiths, Bob Marley and other quality artists wafted out the stereo and added to the warm atmosphere.
My main of Mini Fish Pie with Cheddar and Spring Onion Mash was fantastic. Lots and lots of fish (I hate it when a fish pie has one sad looking piece of cod floating in it), and a really superb white sauce. I detected the presence of mackerel in the pie, which was gorgeous, and added a lovely smoked flavour. The mash which was fluffy and really cheesy was served separately to the pie- an unusual twist, but one that worked very well. My dining companion, being slightly less greedy than me, opted for a main off the regular menu: Pork and Chorizo Burger topped with BBQ Pulled Pork and Monterey Cheese (£11.75). This was an impressive beast to behold, and I couldn’t help swooning at the massive pork burger and generous layer of pulled pork, along with the usual lovelies served with a really good burger; onion rings, pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, nicely cooked fries. To stop the large quantities of niceness toppling, it had one of those
Considering it was past midday, I thought why not indulge in a glass of wine, it would be rude not to. I had a very nice glass of Ponte Emiliano Sangiovese (£3.90) and surveyed the menu. I was perfectly timed for the

sticks speared through it. I have learnt over the years that if a burger comes with its own stick accessory, it is probably going to be really good. I wasn’t disappointed; the salad was fresh and balanced, the burger juicy and flavoursome, and the pulled pork… ahhh… where do I begin? Perfectly glistening in its own juices, cooked with skill (by a chef named ‘Munkee’) and incredibly tasty, it made me do a rather un-sporting, but completely involuntary inward laugh about vegetarians. My companion, also a lover of a much-too-early-in-theday drinking ordered a pint of Boondoggle (£3.50). He said it was lovely, but as a strict wine lover, I took his word for it. The pub does a couple of other interesting beers such as Oxford Gold (£3.50), Brakspear Bitter (£3.35) and an ever-changing speciality beer, this month Hobgoblin at (£3.50). Being an unashamed lover of chocolate desserts, the Gooey Chocolate Brownie with Soft Whipped Cream jumped out of the menu at me so eagerly, I was worried it had given me a concussion. As it turns out the rich, gooey, frankly phenomenal tasting brownie, caressed by cream which exploded with a vanilla flavour did make me feel a little dizzy, so maybe I was concussed after all. I was thoroughly impressed with the quality of the food, the friendly service, and the obvious value for money offered by the lunch menu. I may have heard Bob Marley and The Smiths while I was there, but as I left the Connaught, it was ‘Food, Glorious Food’ in my head. The Connaught 48 Hove Street, Hove

While I like to pretend that in the summer time I skip around with daisies in my hair, merrily munching on healthy salads this would be an awful lie. The only time I have daisies in my hair is when I fall over in a field after one too many glasses of wine. There are certain cuisines that I eat all year round- French, Italian, Spanish to name a few. Regretfully, Indian food often gets left off my list. This may be because I have frequented a fair few really disappointing Curry houses in the past which have somewhat dampened my spirits. So it was with trepidation that I trotted off to Eastern Eye on London Road. Entering the restaurant immediately put a smile on my face- going so far as to produce the elusive dimples I get when smiling transforms into inane grinning. The décor is pretty minimalist without being cold. They have some beautiful, authentic Indian wall hangings, mosaicked pillars, and a rather impressive mirrored feature bar which occupies a central position. Animated chatter filled every crevice as it became apparent this was a popular place, so much so that we grabbed one of the last tables. We began with a belly-busting amount of starters, which of course was only in the name of journalism! The Crispy Fried Chilli Baby Garlic Squid (£4.50) was fantastic, and packed a real punch. They reminded me of Spanish Padron Peppers, whereby some are very hot, and some milder. They were served with a Mint Chutney, which I would never have associated with squid, but was a masterstroke. The vegetarian Ragda Patties (£3.50) were lovely, fluffy potato tikkies cosseted by a very flavoursome chickpea,
herby, chutney-type sauce. We also sampled a Prawn and Egg Dosa, which is making its debut on the November menu. While all the appetisers were superb, this has to be my favourite. Perfectly cooked dosa’s were artfully enveloped between egg and prawn, a combination that sounds slightly ‘out-there’, but that worked in absolute harmony. I was surprised to see duck on the menu, as it can often be like finding a needle in a haystack when surveying an Indian menu. The Duck Chilli Garlic (£9.85) was still succulent, and was had exactly the sort of blast of chilli you would want from a hot dish. However, the careful use of spicing ensured it was a gradual build up heat, rather than the sort that leaves you sweating and resembling a tomato. The Tarka Dal (£6.95 as a main) was well prepared and completely avoided the sloppiness that so often pervades the dish. The Peshwari Naan (£1.95) was the nicest Peshwari Naan I had ever sampled, and was perfect for dipping in the nicest curry I had ever sampled, The Malabar Fish Curry (£8.25). The extraordinarily large chunks of beautiful fish bobbed delicately in a delectable coconut and mustard seed sauce. If I could only ever have another curry dish again, it would be the fish curry… without a doubt. Quite simply, Eastern Eye uses very high quality produce, cooks it with love, packs it with flavour and presents it wonderfully: As a curry sceptic I have well and truly re-assessed my stance. THE FISHBOWL
BY LUCY HALLETT
s p i h C & Fish
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, which is always a possibility in Brighton as they’re everywhere, you will be familiar with The Fishbowl. Nestled at the bottom of East Street, and occupying prime stomping ground for a few bevvies, its turquoise façade is as synonymous with Brighton as DJ Derek or the possibility of a seagull waking you in the night with its rather distinctive mating call. However, until my visit it wouldn’t necessarily have been a place I would have thought of to get some decent food, so imagine my shock at finding that it sells some of the best fish and chips I’ve had in a long time.
taste; likewise the homemade tartare sauce was fresh and moreish. The real star of the show, however, was the fish and chips themselves. The chips occupied an unusual but delicious position between large ‘proper’ chip and French fry, and were cooked and seasoned to perfection. The fish was something else. Somehow the chef has eradicated the greasy heaviness that can come with battered fish, and replaced it with a beautiful crisp, light and almost sexy batter that allowed the lemon and pepper and my companion’s garlic and herbs to really take centre stage. All this for a very reasonable £8.50.
My dining companion and I were seated at one of the large, rustic tables that are dotted around the pub. The lack of pretention and relaxed feel that emanate from the wood and pebbled walls hit me almost as immediately as the rather nice fish and chip smells which were wafting about. I was surprised to find that they offer different flavoured batters for the cod and haddock on the menu. I went for lemon and black pepper batter with haddock, my companion opting for the toasted herbs and garlic batter with the cod. Not being particular fans of the mushy variety, we both chose minted garden peas to accompany our mains.
The Fishbowl has garnered something of a reputation for doing some good deals- if you hold a valid NUS card you can get all sorts of cheap drinks between Monday and Thursday such as Fosters or Strongbow for £2.75, Smirnoff and Coke for £2.50 or Kronenberg for £3. I left feeling very content and well- fed, and for the first time noticed the large fishbowl housing a happy little fish. Horribly though, all I could wonder is how he would taste with that lovely batter.
The food arrived, and not only smelled delicious, but looked very attractive too- a difficult task with fish and chips unless you have a few spare bows and ribbons. The minted peas were faultlessly cooked, and had a really fresh
