EDITOR'S MESSAGE:
It’s November, so the Christmas adverts are beginning in earnest. Every conceivable product hitting our screens is getting some festive flair in a mawkish attempt to completely deplete UK finances. The seasonal unveiling of the John Lewis commercial has even become a national event, bringing families together, delighting children and sparking hours of feverish debate everywhere. This spiral of sentimentality will be non-stop, until Santa begins his trans-global delivery of laptops, breast augmentation vouchers and designer clothing. This year will undoubtedly fill our living rooms with crap like anthropomorphised animals flirting in the snow, the grin on a child’s face as they receive a flick-knife on Christmas morning, or mum freaking out as she drunkenly attempts to prepare the year’s most important meal. Rising above them all will be an insipid slowed-down cover of some popular song. Hold back the tears as an acoustic version of Smells Like Teen Spirit soundtracks Grandad, resplendent with hideous jumper, carving a massive turkey. Sighing, he wonders why his family have instead taken an opportune break in Barbados before Brexit scuppers the economy. Three things you won’t see much of are child poverty, a sense of proportion or Jesus. Not that the Son of God is above a bit of advertising – his festive campaigns for FIFA 20AD, Levites Megamarket and Prophet Station were all quite emotional.

POETRY FESTIVAL MAKING ITS WAY TO THE OLD MARKET SAT 18 NOV
Attila the Stockbroker
This November, Brighton & Hove Arts Council are holding their first ever combined poetry festival and competition. Headlining is Carol Ann Duffy, a woman who was the first Scottish and openly LGBT person to hold the British Poet Laureate award. She has been described as an artist of vast imagination, with a voice that is both rich and powerful. Her work explores topics such as gender, oppression and violence, voicing that she likes to use simple words in a complicated way. Brighton’s own socialist, surrealist rebel, Attila the Stockbroker, will also be performing his raw, hardhitting and politically radical work, which will have you high on emotion as well as roaring with laughter. Appearences from John. A. Samson, spoken word experts Hammer and Tongue also head to the festival, in addition to students from Brighton University all participating in a poetry slam. A competition has also been held over the summer, for wordsmiths and aspiring writers to get a chance for their poems to be noticed. The first prize for the competition is £1000, other prizes include a Write Work Live Award writing course worth £250, and the University of Brighton Student Award First Prize is £150. It’ll be judged by Dr Jess Moriarty, the course leader of English Literature at Brighton University, and prizes will be awarded by Ms Duffy. There’s also a chance for writer’s entries to be read out by themselves or another individual, as the festival aims to celebrate local poetry talent. TOM Poetry Festival comes to Hove’s The Old Market on Sat 18 Nov 4pm-8pm.

Hartleys Top Tipple City of London Dry Gin The City of London has a rich gin history. The influx of spices and citrus fruits coming in to the port of London in the 18th century fuelled the Gin Craze and there was a distillery or gin shop on every street in the City. When a series of crop failures caused the Gin Craze to end, for nearly 200 years there wasn’t a single gin distillery in the City. That was until the City of London Distillery opened in 2012. The City of London Distillery handcrafts award-winning super premium gins including the clean and characterful City of London Dry Gin, a classic London dry gin flavoured with fresh orange, lemon and pink grapefruit, in addition to the finest juniper berries, angelica, liquorice and angelica root, which gives the gin its distinctive zesty notes. www.cityoflondondistillery.com Twitter: @COLDistillery Facebook: /cityoflondondistillery Instagram: @cityoflondondistillery
Marylebone Gin over 250 years ago, at the height of the Gin craze, the gates to Marylebone’s fashionable pleasure gardens opened to the public. Known for its great entertainment, gambling and sports the gardens became a desirable place of amusement for the rich and famous. Three centuries later we present to you the very spirit of the pleasure gardens – Marylebone London Dry Gin Distilled in tiny pot stills in the heart of London, our distilling heritage dates back 8 generations to 1762, when the gardens were at their height. Marylebone gin is delightfully delicate, with hints of camomile, lime flower and lemon balm, notes of sweet citrus and grapefruit all leading to a beautiful, spicy lingering finish. Wonderfully versatile whether used in a dry martini or a refreshing G&T. www.marylebonegin.com Twitter: @marylebonegin Facebook: /marylebonegin Instagram: @marylebonegin

Brighton Gin Goody Bag!
Officially the UK’s best gin as voted for in the 2017 People’s Drinks awards, our city's very own Brighton Gin which is filled, waxed and labelled by hand in the city’s first (legal!) distillery has just bought out a new half bottle in time for Christmas. Priced at just £22 and perfectly handbag-sized, the new 350ml bottle makes a perfect gift for those looking for a more generous measure than the hugely popular stocking-filler miniatures which at 50ml sell for around £5. Made from 100% organic grain spirit, juniper, fresh orange and lime peel, locally-grown coriander and milk thistle, Brighton Gin is smooth, gentle and mellow enough to be sipped neat over ice. It is particularly delicious as part of a classic G&T, served with a slice of orange – the better to bring out the citrus botanicals – and works brilliantly in a Martini, a Negroni or any number of cocktails, recipes for which can be found at Brightongin.com. Or why not create your own and share them on Twitter @brightongin, Facebook at brightongin or Instagram at brightonginstergram. The lovely team at Brighton Gin are giving away the ultimate gin lovers' goody bag including the full bottle, the half bottle and two miniatures plus a T shirt, bag and stick of Brighton Gin rock. To be in with a chance of winning, simply answer the following question: Which of these ingredients will you certainly not find in Brighton Gin? A. Fresh orange

Too Many T’s have been circulating around in the hip-hop industry for a while now, supporting shows for fellow hip-hop luminaries such as De La Soul, Public Enemy and Big Daddy Kane. With the opportunity to travel the well-worn road with musical heroes such as these, their confidence grew within their music, rhythm and lyrics to create the outfit that come to Brighton this month. The dynamic duo, made up of Ross and Leon, are renowned for their high-energy performances, bringing their blend of excitement and musical exuberance to gigs and music festivals over the last few years, which in turn has enabled them to expand their horizons and produce South City, their first full length album. From the moment the future musical partners met, a musical bond was created and developed, based around a shared love of all things hip-hop. Having originally crossed paths whilst studying at college, the two stayed in touch, bouncing musical ideas and thoughts back and forth. Meeting around twice a year, to make a tune or two, “just for the mutual love of rapping really”. A couple years later, they both moved to Camberwell, London, from where, after a trial gig at a local club, the concept and reality of Too Many Ts was born.

The Ho
BY LOTTIE WOODROW
Alongside the skit-based rhythms, storytelling through comedic value in their music videos is an essential part of what they do and enjoy. “We’ve been spending a lot of time on our music videos, making them as unique as possible, and not just like any other music video.” I asked for a sneak peak into what we could expect from them in the coming month and gained a glimpse into that creative process - the song ‘Patterns’ is going to be a full CGI music video, created by a video-game creator whereas ‘Neighbours’ is a complete stop-motion lego music video, with all scenes made and created using the ever-popular plastic bricks. “It’s completely ridiculous, but it came out a lot better than we ever thought it would.” For the upcoming show at The Hope & Ruin, I asked what their fans could expect from them. The show incorporates all music from their previous EPs and majority of the new album. “It’s going to be fun, high energy, with a lot of people and a lot of dancing.” Expect audio visuals, dynamism and some sore legs by the end of the evening.
I ask Ross who they saw as major inspiration growing up, he begins with his passion for old school hip-hop. He fell in love with late 80’s to early 90’s fast rap, like Big Daddy Kane, Slick Rick and Jurassic 5. As well as having a new found love for what he describes as “weird, underground rap”, labels like Def Jux Records. When I ask who Leon grew up with, Ross laughs, saying he was initially a “cheesy RnB guy”. However, a three month stint in New York shifted those musical boundaries and his interest in hip-hop and rap came to the fore. The duo’s debut album South City has recently come out, with the influence of combining all their hyped high-energy from the last few years of touring at festivals into a record. As with many artists where the live show dominates, it became all about trying to effectively translate this dynamic stage performance onto a record. With the help from Flux Pavilion, a hybrid of old-school, new-school and live energy was introduced. Skits populate much of the record, with the lyricists leaning on the hip-hop tradition of relating words back to ‘real life’ rather than more ethereal concepts. As Ross explains, it’s “a weird sort of background of general life” – going to the shops, catching the bus. Less of the highfaluting, more of the reality. 12

THE HEAD Tues 7 Nov Green Door Store
Combining punk rock, with an array of psychedelia, The Lovely Eggs have created, and continue to create untouchably unique and independent music, away from the mainstream popular music culture. Backed by support from Radio One and 6 Music, this inspiring duo, formed of married couple Holly Ross, on vocals and guitar and David Blackwell, on drums, are back with their first full-length tour in over a year.
Having dealt with overcoming personal issues, and being bullied for his sexuality, Perfume Genius combines his overcoming through his indie records. The US singer songwriter, Mike Hadreas’s project Perfume Genius, merges piano ballads and glam-rock to create an indie showcasing musical phenomenon. Using his personal issues of sexuality, homophobia, and domestic abuse, he transforms the words into ever-changing emotional musical honesty regarding these challenging and character building issues.
Releasing their latest rock full-length album Space to the UK public this autumn, The Head come to the UK with 14 dates across the country. Currently touring in the US, the brothers Mike Shaw and Jack Shaw and Jacob Morell, are set for continuing showstoppers at every date.
For the past year, they have been creating a masterpiece of an album with Flaming Lips producer Dave Fridmann. Album, The is Eggland is set to come out in early 2018, with their tour coming to The Haunt, debuting some of their transforming musical delights.
His latest album No Shape, builds on from his previous works, to create an even more powerful message regarding homophobia and struggles of being the ‘other’ in society.
GHOSTPOET Weds 8 Nov
Inspired by some of their favourite bands, including The Verve and Echo and The National, the band first came together through jamming and creating original lyrics during high school. From this, they followed their ambitions and were later signed. Throughout the years, they have opened for and shared shows from other renowned names, such as Primal Scream, Lucy Dacu, Shovels and Rope and so many more.
Concorde 2
The night before his latest album Dark Days + Canapés dropped on Fri 18 Aug, the British vocalist and musician Ghostpoet, released his track Dopamine If I Do. This play on words track, was inspired for those struggling in an ever-expanding, connected, yet undeniably lonely world. The track also features singer-songwriter EERA, using her Nordic voice against Obaro’s doom-noir.
© Steve Gullick
Combining issues surrounding loneliness and looking at society from an outsider’s perspective, Ghostpoet acts as a social commentary on today’s society. His latest tour is set to be brilliantly transforming, with his electronic sounds as well as lyrical monologues.
WILL STRATTON Thurs 9 Nov
The Brunswick
Stratton’s first album Rosewood Almanac evokes all emotional senses with its hypnotic combination of earthy voice, tingling melodies and instrumentation and infinite lyrical imagery, all centred around his acoustic guitar. The upcoming show will see all of these combined with delicacy and intimacy.

After falling in love with a guitar back in high school, this New Yorker first started out combining songwriting and musical talents of his guitar into beautiful compositions, helped by studying philosophy and music composition at university. Using inspiration from Nike Drake and other iconic folk singers, led Stratton to produce such directly beautiful sound and lyrics. His album centralises around his guitar, so the tour is set to do the same.

London-based electronic music artist Nathassia and her band are getting ready for their debut World tour. This uncompromising outfit skilfully blend ground-breaking electronic music with a unique vocal style. It’s a sumptuous mélange of East and West, with audaciously crafted live electronica and truly mesmerising visuals. Their shows take you on a spellbinding journey, bringing the past back to life then transporting the audience into the future. From 3D to singularity, Paganism to Transhumanism, Egypt to Nanotech and Third Eye to A.I. Their forthcoming debut album Light of the World is set to cause a storm, so this is a great chance to catch this unique and ascendant artist in an intimate setting.
LOST HORIZONS Sat 18 Nov Nov
Rialto Theatre
In celebrating 20 years of record label Bella Union, Simon Raymonde collaborates with Richie Thomas, a drummer to create Lost Horizons, with combinations of soul, dreaminess, and at times can be seen as loud and fast-paced in some songs. The two musicians have been in the shadows for the past 20 years, absent and faded, yet their heavenly debut album changes all of this. Ojala incorporates areas of interest for everyone, whatever your taste in music is, with area of passionate soul, odd fast detours and dreamy invocations but the overall domineering mood being rich with melancholia. It also includes many guest singers: some who are signed to Bella Union like Marissa Nadler and other friends and favourites of Raymond himself, such as Karen Peris of The Innocence Mission.
Coming from the depths of Atlanta, Georgia, Moon Diagrams comes to the Green Door Store this November. A solo project of drummer and co-founder of Deerhunter’s, Moses Archuleta, fuses airy vocals, synth sounds and melodic percussion. This concoction of blends, sounds and lyrics has taken 10 years of recordings to create Life Time of Love, which follows on from an earlier EP release in 2015. The album itself is said to be created across 3 contrasting periods in Archuleta’s life, which can be seen through the reflection of the varying sounds. As well as finding inspiration with the arty city of Berlin, falling in love with techno sounds, subverting from his indie routes in his first band.
MY SAD CAPTAINS Tues 21 Nov Sticky Mikes Frog Bar This London-based band, released its fourth album, Sea Bridge, three years after their last album. Named after how a still lake can offer beautifully ideal reflections for sun to resemble a bridge across the water. Hidden under the dream-pop genre, the album reflects how unsettled and unsolved times can be the foreground for change or changing adventures. With their aim to be more dynamic and pushing their own boundaries, this album does just that. With the foregrounding ideals surrounding evolution being necessitated by change, it is reflected in their music. After some of the band left, new delights entered with a whole new creative palette.
BAD SOUNDS Weds 22 Nov Komedia Starting as a sibling duo, began playing together in school bands but grew into different musical passions. Struggling with where to go, and what kind of music to produce, the band grew into a full band in September 2014, with a drummer, guitarist and bassist. Their first gig was a flop, with only five people turning up. Following this, spending two years locked away, working on their style, music and lyrics. Releasing a couple of their indie singles along the way, I Feel and Avalanche. 2016 for them, became a huge year for the band, with their first headlines shows in London and their hometown of Bristol, being sell out shows. This tour is set to be even more focused.

The album becomes a soundtrack to the world in which we live, filled with frustration and turmoil, but holding onto a spark of hope. This tour being their biggest and greatest Arena tour to date across the UK and Europe, with support from Lower Than Atlantic and Astroid Boys. Following their previous albums, the band continue with their alternative and experimental rock genre, producing exceptional tracks and tours every time.

Ferociously touring near to non-stop for the last two years, Holy Moly and The Crackers are at it once more, becoming more fiery, yet darker than ever before. Creating a whole mix of genres, largely influenced by electric, folk and even popular music, fusing an unique balance of gypsy folk rock.
Indie folk band Fleet Foxes return, after their last sell-out performance at the Brighton Dome. This American band from Seattle released their third album CrackUp earlier this year. This new album is more powered with long boundless compositions and lyrics, whilst still including their trademark harmonies that they are renowned for.
Originating from the North East, the band have built themselves a huge reputation, always having filled out shows. This has further increased through their latest album Salem, with the songs still surrounding a narrative but with a further increased emphasis on the beat, the sound and overall the music. From this, it has enabled continual touring and in 2016, they played at numerous amounts of festivals.
Forming in 2005, the bands popularity soon grew and it has not stopped growing since. Crack-Up engages with political debate and situations throughout the world, with references to the death of young black men across the US, and Muhammad Ali’s death also. Through immersive sound, the lyrics become more powerful and speak out the listener.

This powerhouse popstar is renowned for her intense vocal range, crossing elements of soul, ballads, and euphoric dance. Using influences from film, art, fashion, travel, and relationships, BETSY is one of this year’s stand-out voices and one to watch in the following future.

With his EP Blessings released in mid-May, he also released 7 dates for his UK headliner tour. Co-produced with Jim Abbiss, the EP features three tracks written by Tom himself, alongside an alternative version of is hit Just you & I which has streamed 12 million times already. The EP shows a new side to Tom, with a more up-beat and formalised side on Karma and Rapture whereas the other two songs showcase an intimate stripped back side of him, on lead track Blessings and Just You & I. After playing three sold out shows in the US and one in Camden Assembly earlier this year, he introduced this latest tour, which is set to be a sell-out too.
American punk-rock band from Texas, headline the Brighton Centre this November. Formed in 1994, the band is seen to be one of the most influential post-hardcore acts of the 1990’s and early 2000’s, stylised as punk rock, emo and art punk. Beginning out by performing some of their favourite artists like Pink Floyd, The Ramones and The Smiths, they soon stylised into their own range of movement within the music industry, having now released their fourth album. Their latest album In.ter. a.li.a is their first studio album since Relationship of Command 17 years ago. Replicating everything that they do best, and so much more.
FEMME Weds 29 Nov The Hope & Ruin Described as a “one-woman powerhouse’” by Radio 1’s Annie Mac, Femme is a truly uncompromising artist. A composer, producer, director and choreographer, she’s eschewed major label interest to maintain her musical vision without interference. This uncompromising approach hasn’t stopped her working with the leading lights of the industry. Femme has toured the USA with Charli XCX, featured on tracks by Huxley, been remixed by NZCA Lines and partnered with Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich for their critically acclaimed Ultraísta collaboration and album. This is an astonishing pop star – fashion-forward, aware and equipped with a fierce arsenal of dancefloor-ready pop tunes.
BENJAMIN CLEMENTINE Thurs 30 Nov Brighton Dome British singer, songwriter and poet Benjamin Clementine has released his latest music since being awarded 2015’s Mercury Music Prize for his debut album At Least For Now. Having grown up in London he moved to Paris, where he became homeless, as a teenager. This prompted him to write about his experiences and issues. His performances enabled him to become a cult figure, and he later moved back to the UK where he debut on TV show Later With Jools Holland in 2013. His latest album talks about his experiences of being bullied, but how it is not comparable to the problems children face when placed with war and trauma. Beloved for his emotional performances, Benjamin’s tour is set to be phenomenal.

Marika Hackman Marika Hackman is a singer songwriter and multiinstrumentalist. If you look her up online, you will commonly see the label ‘folk’ somewhere next to her name. Yet, she doesn’t associate herself with this genre. She explains to me how it seems to be an association a lot of women in the industry get when there’s a woman with a guitar, which has frustrated her throughout her career.
Her music is something quite refreshingly unique to the music scene, with sounds of experimental and alternative rock, with melancholic, yet dreamy and hypnotic vocals. Since the age of four, the Hampshire born musician has been playing the piano and towards her teen years began to play bass, drums and guitar. Having grown up with parents and grandparents who were creative and musically talented, it seemed natural that this was something she’d be good at. Marika is an artist who strives to bring something new to the table, and she’s successful at doing so. Ever since she started out she would experiment with unconventional chord patterns and melodies, pushing the boundaries with each song she wrote. She even formed a cover band with model Cara Delevingne for a short while when they were at school together (Hackman also used to model for Burberry, being chosen as one of the new faces for an ad campaign). Hackman’s career started out in 2012 after she was signed by Transgressive. Since that point she has worked a lot with Charlie Andrew, a music producer who also works closely with bands like Alt-j. She tells me they have an “easy relationship. He inspires me and I think I inspire him” and how she finds him “exciting and intriguing” to work with. She has also toured with Laura Marling, and appeared on one Alt J’s albums along with performing at various festivals. Barcelona was one of her favourite places to perform this summer, it being a place she had never been, let alone performed.

Marika is still young and exploring the world as a musician, but I can tell she will go far with her work as continues to creatively develop her style. Her debut album, We Slept at Last, was released in 2014 and is softer and more acoustic than her latest album, I’m Not Your Man which was been released this year and is instantly more recognisable as band heavy. The Big Moon, an up and coming girl band, have played the music for her tracks on the album. Hackman became good friends with the group after hanging out with them after one of their gigs a while back. Her live band for her new tour, beginning this November, have also added a new dimension to her gigs and so it feels like “a bit of a rebirth tour”. She explains to me about how as being a solo artist you miss out on the fun aspects of being in a band “I want to be having fun on stage and jump around playing my guitar loads. Not just having to hold up a room by myself with my voice and an acoustic guitar” - a pressure I think often forgotten by fans. It’s nice to hear that Brighton is a city she’s especially excited to perform at, as she hasn’t for years, having studied art foundation in the city when she was 18. Marika is a woman who alongside her musical talents is easy to chat to, and simultaneously interesting. She strikes me as someone who stands by staying true to herself, and its admirable that she is trying to banish stereotypes against women in the music profession. When we discuss musicians wanting to make it in the industry she advises the importance of being able to say no and “not jumping at every opportunity just because it feels like something that may forward your career.” Marika Hackman plays The Haunt Brighton, on Mon 13 Nov. www.marikahackman.com

DJ FORMAT AND ABDOMINAL Sat 18 Nov The Haunt It feels like DJ Format and Abdominal just can’t stay away from touring the nation! After another incredibly successful tour earlier this year, the infamous hip-hop duo head out once again to showcase their very first collaborative full-length album– Still Hungry.
R’n’B and hip-hop throwback tracks from BOSSY Brighton. Bringing even more boisterous bassline chaos to the dancefloor will be Anths and Debs. These songwriters provide sweet harmonies, 90s jungle, 00s speed garage and 10s electro R’n’B. So, prepare for wild moves, great tunes, sweaty DJs, and bass-driven party action.
Occupying the space where trap, grime, UKG, house and bass intersect, Miyake is at the centre of a huge surge in brilliant British sound system music. Over the years, his productions have matured. The edgy and distorted electronic sounds he found fame with are now just a single part of the expansive sonic gamut he explores. This is forward-thinking modern club music at it’s best.
- offering the best in 90s hip hop, funk, rare groove and those classic party jams that brought us to where we are. This music had a massive impact on British youth, but is too often overlooked nowadays… Expect to hear a bit of Tribe Called Quest, Monie Love, Stetsasonic, Young MC, King Bee, Public Enemy, The Meters, Roy Ayers, Salt n Pepa, Beastie Boys and many more’.
If you need proof the UK hip hop scene is still thriving, then here it is. Two rappers get backed by thunderous percussion, mountainous basslines, and plenty of bounce. That’s before we even get to the choice use of sampling and turntablism. There might be more aggressive or ‘trendy’ styles and artists out there, but this pair have been in the game for over a decade and their flow is as strong as ever.

MARGARET CHO By Stuart Rolt
Currently her country is at war with itself. The United States appears increasingly divided, and its mercurial administration is doing little to ease tensions. The Oval Office endures a fragile relationship with the truth, and a bullish attitude towards opponents. Although this chaos is inspirationally fertile for comedians, it’s easy to incur the wrath of the emboldened right. Especially if, like Cho’s friend Kathy Griffin, you pose for photos with a mock-up of the Commander-In-Chief’s severed head. “It was like a QVC French Revolution. I love it when she gets fired, because I’m always next in line for whatever job that is. I’m always supportive of her losing a job.” Not that controversy is completely alien to Cho herself. She’s a propensity for dressing up as Kim Jong Un (in the name of comedy, not whilst relaxing), and feels comfortable tearing into sensitive subjects – like race, body image, religion, poverty, sexuality, and often her own hangups and Korean heritage. Humour allows her to cheerily negotiate a cultural battleground, where hand-wringing progressives and fame-hungry right-wing commentators rage on 24-hour TV news or social media. She maintains comedy became more important after 9/11, offering a tool to criticise and explore different opinions. “The one great power that comedy has is that it can point out stereotypes, falsehoods, ignorance and all the things we’re fighting against to make a better world.” Acknowledging it probably sounds corny, she suggests it’s about ‘finding a voice for the people.’ She’s due to embark on her first proper tour of the UK, bringing Fresh Off The Boat to Brighton Dome on Sat 2 Dec.
One of the benefits of the internet and global news is there’s little need to adapt routines for a European audience. ”Everyone knows about everything really fast. The world has become smaller, so that’s really great for comedy and art. We come up with the same frame of reference everywhere.” The show offers something of a consolidation for her boundary-defying comedy. Inspiring it is a society where body image is increasingly politicised and white supremacists aren’t called out, for fear of offending their delicate sensibilities. “There’s a weird sensitivity around that makes people call them the ‘Alt-Right’. It gives them a weird kind of dignity, which they don’t really need to have.” In many southern states there’s a consensus the Caucasian population is under threat. The removal of monuments glorifying civil war leaders and slavery has become a flash point for some communities. “There’s no reason why these structures need to exist. It’s a part of our culture which we should be ashamed of.” She says she is scared by sickening rhetoric masquerading under the guise of free speech, but there is optimism for the future. It’s not all doom and gloom though. Cho is quick to laugh during our conversation, especially at her own expense. She’s also very excited about a new TV sitcom she’s co-writing and starring in. Highland, which focusses on two dysfunctional Korean families during California’s ‘Green Rush’ marijuana boom. Some things across the pond remain quite liberal… We agree the world may be returning to an 80s Cold War ethos. Instead of Russia, now North Korea is portrayed as menacing the American way of life. As far as bad political combinations go, Donald John Trump and Kim Jung Un stands as possibly the most dysfunctional yet. And Cho, like many of her peers, is increasingly weary of shameless behaviour from the ex-reality star. “He’s operating very much on his lizard-brain, reacting in a very base, crazy childish way. The presidency used to be a very dignified job. It really isn’t anymore, which is sickening. If you’re in your right mind you have to question him. I blame NASCAR and energy drinks. I don’t what to do and I don’t know what to think. But it is good to make jokes about. That’s the one thing I’ve found.” Margaret Cho’s Fresh Off The Boat comes to Brighton Dome on Sat 2 Dec. www.brightondome.org www.margaretcho.com

“It’s really crazy what’s happening here…” Margaret Cho is reflecting on America’s year thus far. “Every day it’s worse, whether it’s making crazy threats towards North Korea or supporting Nazis. I don’t understand why Trump has to defend Nazis., it’s really crazy. I’ve never seen anything like it.” The comedian, performer and actor has never shied away from being controversial or outspoken, but there’s a suggestion of being offered too much opportunity. Civil rights are being withdrawn, people are denounced for kneeling during the national anthem, feelings are more important than facts and racism is returning to the norm. so Cho is on the road with Fresh Off The Boat, a huge touring show which attempts to make sense of the senseless – or at least wring a few laughs from an ever-more bizarre and brutal news cycle.

LOYAL Brighton is a vibrant city overflowing with creativity, not least musical talent. A place partly known for its buzzing music scene, the home of one branch of the British Modern Music Institute, plenty of live venues and events and where budding artists are given a huge amount of opportunity and support. LOYAL stands out from the many bands formed in Brighton. The band’s music is cinematic and to listen to their music has been described as like “entering a movie theatre halfway through the greatest film you never saw only to be instantly gripped and confounded at the same time.” If you wanted to classify their sounds, they consist of post-house, pulsating yet relaxing beats with melancholic disco grooves. The band describes their music as being real: “Piano, cello, choir, synth… We don’t sit in room with a laptop. We’re striving to make something classic.” Which is something refreshing, a sort of philosophy which feels like its disappearing, especially so in the pop industry today. Not to mention the other-worldly vocals, they are soft yet euphoric and combine local vocalist with a gospel choir feel. Especially so in their uplifting choruses where the music becomes almost hypnotic. LOYAL have something rather enigmatic about them, with mysterious lyrics that suggest a bigger story. The writer of these lyrics explains: “We use Kubrick [film director] as an analogy, because he lets your imagination do the work. He’ll do scenes where you don’t see the murder, but you hear it. And it’s more fucked - because your mind is creating something more vivid than an image ever could. We want to let people’s imagination do it for them.” This seemed especially so on their debut single Blue & The Green. “This was the one that started it really,” says its writer. “Initially when you listen, it’s about a relationship that’s dying. That line ‘Let the blue and the green fade behind me’ is jealousy and envy. But in our story it becomes a question, do we need to leave the planet Earth? 24
There’s a real strong double meaning there, where you can take a line and it works for both.” That’s what music is about, really, isn’t it? People confiding in sounds that they enjoy and not only evoking emotion, but using it how you please. Blue & The Green received a hugely positive response online accumulating around half a million Soundcloud plays through word of mouth alone (as well as a testimony from Pete Tong, who claimed the group give him “goose-bumps”). One of their most recent releases, Reset in Colour also got an encouraging response, with the band explaining it stemmed from the tragedies and politics going on in the world today. “We wrote this musically and lyrically about finding hope in such moments and reminding us we should embrace our individuality and unite with our differences not be divided by them.” The band premiered on Radio 1 this summer, recording two Maida Vale sessions for the station and prompting taste-maker Mistajam to describe their live show as 'amazing and inspired.' On the small screen, Their Moving As One track made it both onto the FIFA17 soundtrack, and HBO’s 'Year In Review' adverts. The band also performed at Bestival recently, and are all set to tour this November with rock/hip hop/electronic band Haus. Although they are becoming more established and getting themselves out there, they remain as cryptic as possible, with information and pictures of them on the internet being scarce. “We just do what we do. Of course, you have to put it into some sort of language or reality, but I think the mystery is stronger. If the music is getting enough buzz, who cares? Why would you want to know everything?” Brighton, once again, you have not failed to deliver. LOYAL play Brighton’s The Haunt on Thurs 14 Dec 2017 www.facebook.com/LOYAL

L E V E L T X E N AUDIO AT From plectrums to PA systems, if you have a specific instrument need then the chances are Brighton’s GAK store can sort you out. Founded in a tiny unit on Brighton’s Kensington Gardens back in 1992, they now occupy a cavernous space around the corner and have become one of the UK’s leading #musical instrument retailers. Part of the company’s success is due to strong branding and early adoption of the internet’s marketplace. The site also offers a chance to truly represent the brands they stock, using writers, video producers and professional photographers to create unique content for each item. GAK also realised the value of social media when it emerged. ”It is not so much an avenue to sell the products,” says GAK’s Digital Development Manager, Jon Kennett. "We see it as more of an opportunity to represent the brand and do some really cool stuff.” Along with celebrating their 25th birthday, they also deployed a new a website. This packed in more deals, information and functionality with a reassuringly familiar appearance. “We’ve always been known for being a bit of a rock and roll brand. Rather than the corporate look we tried to bring a little bit of the character from the old site.” Their instantly recognisable red and yellow livery can be seen in most musicalorientated corners of the web, across their store on North Road and at conferences and trade-shows around the world.
26
Although online purchases draw international customers, the company’s physical shop remains very important. A landmark building in North Laine, this inadvertent tourist attraction is Aladdin’s cave of instruments and technology. “Everyone knows GAK as this guitar shop in the centre of Brighton, but a lot miss that there’s really good DJ section next door. We’ve also got a lovely digital piano store. Anything you need - we can get.” There’s a constant focus on keeping abreast of trends and innovations, particularly amongst the pro-audio equipment which is becoming increasingly cheaper and more accessible. DJ kit is one area rapidly evolving. On the day we speak, Pioneer released a game changing performance-orientated sampler. The line between performance and production gear becoming increasingly blurred.
GAK
Almost everything they stock is also available to schools, colleges and universities, at discounted prices through their GAK Education service. “It’s really good for us to help those guys out. Many of the brands we work with make some great education-focused products. For us we want to help service the local community.” For the last ten years, clients including Brighton’s Access To Music and BIMM along with their students are kept at the cutting-edge of an ever-changing, creative-industry. To reach out to the wider musical community they work with manufacturers to run workshops and showcase events with famous artists and local talent. “We try and hold those events as often as possible. There’s always something going on, either in the in-store or in a local venue.” The personal touch and offering great customer care continues to be a vital component of what they do, from offering advice on set-ups to providing swift delivery options. “It’s becoming even more important to make sure your level of service is the best. Customers can contact us when they need to, and we will be responsive.” From families buying Christmas presents, to producers updating their studio, GAK appreciate everyone has individual needs and endeavours to make their musical experience as enjoyable as possible. Both the shop and site are invaluable destinations for anyone wanting the best products from brands like Roland, Gibson, Fender, Yamaha, Korg, Pioneer and Native Instruments. They can also offer unparalleled information about studio monitoring, microphones, effects, caballing, speakers… even guitars. Everything has been founded on a musician’s love for music. “We always employ people who have a passion about music, so when they come to work they love what we’re selling. I don’t think I can name anyone in the company that doesn’t play or have a huge affinity with music. Perhaps we should all get together and a have a massive jam.” The GAK audio store is at 76-82 North Rd, Brighton BN1 1YD www.gak.co.uk

Is The Word! An interview with DANIELLE HOPE By Stuart Rolt It’s the original high-school musical. An iconic story about adolescence during the 50s, just as America enjoys unprecedented economic success and sweeping social change, Grease explores what it’s like on the verge of adulthood. “In the 50s there was no such word as teenager. So this generation of kids created the term,” Danielle Hope tells me. She plays Sandy, a clean cut young lady whose life is turned upside down when she transfers to Rydell High School. She’s enjoyed a summer romance with Danny, played by The Wanted’s Tom Parker, and passions are about to reignite. Joining the mix, Strictly Come Dancing’s Louisa Lytton plays Rizzo - a straight talking girl determined to show everyone who’s in charge. It’s a frenetic and colourful show, with a costume change every time Hope leaves the stage. There’s also plenty of rich dynamics amongst its characters. “For me, the most interesting relationship in the show is Sandy and Rizzo. It helps that me and Louisa are good friends in real life. We love to explore it. We have these off-stage things which we pretend have happened.” Her portrayal of Sandy blends high morals with an endearing naivety. It doesn’t mean the character is incapable of observing what’s happening around her, especially when her fellow teens are making snap judgements. 28
Sandy starts the school as outsider. While she embodies a vision of purity promoted by the establishment, she also

' represents a norm her peers are rebelling against. “I think the bedroom scene especially shows this. Rizzo is really going for Sandy and the other girls are pretending not to notice it. Sandy never crumbles. She knows Rizzo is talking to her like that, but knows that she doesn’t mean it. So, the way she deals with it is really important.” At the finale, the character’s ‘coming out’ is far from capitulation to please her man. Instead, it’s the realisation of an identity she’s chosen for herself. “She can come out and kick ass. She is a strong woman. At the same time, she is still Sandy, she’s not going to let him get in her pants. She knows herself.” Hope sees the transformation as an affirmation it’s OK to be exactly whoever you are, and who you want to be. Sandy forsakes traditional expectations for a more authentic happiness. And let’s not forget, Tom Parker’s Danny attempts to change first. The beauty of Grease is the breadth of ever-relevant issues it addresses. Alienation, rebellion, body-shaming, selfdetermination, pre-marital sex, failed dreams, sexism and bullying are all addressed with sensitivity and sincerity. The production presents a range of complex characters, each with their own dreams and foibles. None of them are perfect, but they all realise they can be better. The men all struggle with their own interpretation of masculinity, while many of the women struggle against society’s shifting preconceptions. “It is very cleverly written. That’s why Grease is good, as some of the themes can go straight over a six-year-olds head. But the

adults can connect on a different level.” Every mature element is dealt with in an entirely family appropriate manner, which only reinforces the show’s universal appeal. You can take from it what you want. It can be a commentary on coming of age, an examination of 50’s gender politics or a barnstorming set of musical numbers. The songs will always remain timeless, the innuendo subtle and the mockery pointed inwards. Hope has been with this production of the pop culture classic since March, visiting nearly every major town that can sustain a theatre. “For me, the most stressful part of the tour is finding accommodation - every week you move house. It is exhausting, but I do love travelling. I have such a gypsy heart. And we’ve visited places I’ve never been to.” The tour ends on New Year’s Eve here in Brighton, and she admits it’ll be hard not seeing the familiar faces every day. But the experience has been a great one. “A year is a good time to be with one show. You get to explore it as best you can.” The future sees work on a live album, plus travelling to New York exploring the possibility of working on Broadway. She was thrust into the spotlight after winning Over The Rainbow, a BBC talent show seeking a lead for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 2011 production of Wizard Of Oz. Although becoming an almost overnight star, she still doesn’t expect any special treatment. “You can have a big break, but you still have to work constantly. But, I know when I walk through the door on the first day of rehearsals, that I’ve earned that just like everyone else.” Danielle Hope appears in Grease, which comes to Theatre Royal Brighton on Mon 11– Sun 31 Dec. www.atgtickets.com/brighton

THE DUMB WAITER Tues 7 – Sat 11 Nov Rialto Theatre
THE KITE RUNNER Tues 14 – Sat 18 Nov Theatre Royal Brighton
The MITFORDS Tues 14 – Weds 15 Nov Rialto Theatre
Two assassins hide in a basement, waiting for their next victim to walk in unaware. The senior reads the paper. The junior fidgets and jabbers. They argue over semantics. An envelope slides under the door. Then the dumb waiter, a remnant from the old café above, whirs into life, delivering orders that can’t be met.
Following two acclaimed West End seasons, this unforgettable theatrical tour de force brings together David Ahmad and the award-winning Emilio Doorgasingh. Based on Khaled Hosseini’s international best-selling novel, this haunting and powerful story has been adapted into a stunning stage production.
Performed by Heather Long, this new one-woman show by award-winning playwright, Gail Louw, looks at the most famous six sisters in history. The Mitford’s’ privileged and fantastical lives brought them into contact with aristocracy, celebrities, world leaders. In many ways they were the reality stars of their era.
One of Harold Pinter’s finest and most absurd plays, The Dumb Waiter deals with suspense, suspicion, paranoia and the unspoken between two assassins struggling with their consciences. It reminds us that we’re perhaps not completely in control of our lives. Just beyond the edge of perception, higher powers are taking decisions out of our own hands.
This tale of friendship which spans cultures and continents, it follows one man’s journey to confront his past and find redemption. Afghanistan is a divided country on the verge of war and two childhood friends are about to be torn apart. It’s a beautiful afternoon in Kabul and the skies are full of the excitement and joy of a kite flying tournament. But neither child can foresee the terrible incident which will shatter their lives forever.
Diana was married to Oswald Mosley and a lifelong fascist. Unity was a great close friend of Hitler’s. Jessica, was a dyed-inthe-wool communist. Deborah became Duchess of Devonshire. Nancy was a well-loved novelist. And Pamela kept chickens. This astonishing show follows four of the sisters and their part in some the world changing events.
After stunning audiences in Brighton Festival 2016, Lola Arias’ moving work returns to ask: ‘What is a veteran? Survivor? Hero? Mad Man?’ Minefield is an apt demonstration of the power theatre can wield when it’s used to full effect. This astonishing and moving work sensitively looks at the effects of war on the soul, memory and history.
THE PILLOWMAN Tues 14 – Fri 17 Nov Marlborough Theatre The only duty of a storyteller is to tell a story. But when the stories escape from the pages they are written on...what then? An interrogation and a spate of gruesome murders in a totalitarian state, create a contrasting backdrop to a twisted imagination rich with equally gruesome and equally grim tales. A ragtag gaggle of performers and musicians bring a new twist to Martin McDonagh’s award-winning work. Slurring Words Theatre Company want to show you a puzzle without an answer. We want to give you sympathy for murderers. They want to take you to once-upon-atime in a land as close or as far away as you can handle.

Scottee grew up around strong, brave and violent men and boys. This show is his memoir of working class masculinity from 1991 to 1999, as seen by a sheep in wools clothing. Bold, astonishing and uncompromising, this is not for the weak hearted – it includes graphic accounts of violence, abuse, assault and sex. This work may be full of cruelty, confusion, self-loathing and lust, but at its core are a series of uncomfortable truths which need to be heard. It explores the graphic nature of maleness and the extent it will go to succeed. Blood, spit and tears are set against the drunken backdrop of aggressive sensitivity and Oasis songs.

As a young woman who loves poetry, smashing the patriarchy and a well-timed slut drop, these questions have plagued Vanessa Kisuule her whole life. In Sexy , she harnesses truthful wit and clever verse to explore our conflicted relationship with our bodies and sexiness. The writer, performer, burlesque artist and empress of blag explores our obsession with what is sexy through comedy, spoken word, dance and various states of undress. “ Do you think you’re sexy? What do you find sexy? What does sexy even mean?”

$ELFIE$ Sat 25 Nov The Marlborough theatre
A bold dance-theatre featuring Amina Khayyam using Ang Abhinaya, A Thousand Faces subverts imagery of Bollywood beauty and Hollywood glamour. This powerful and extraordinary production explores the objectification of women in indiscriminate abuse and violence.
This is the third work in a series built around understandings of black and queer aesthetics, performed against our current political moment. Malik Nashad Sharpe suggests a new relationship with the emotional landscape amidst the intense highs and lows of the body’s wear and tear.
Ang Abhinaya is a major Indian dance form that often gets overlooked. Amina Khayyam has developed beautiful new approaches in this new work by bringing influences of European experimental forms, physical theatre and mime movement to give the piece a wholly unique and innovative treatment.
Malik’s work is suitably polarised, inhabiting a world of unabashed, unapologetic joyousness, the advent of political melancholia and ambivalence to extreme forms of desire and violence. $elfie$ holds a mirror to the audience and says no to the stranglehold of authoritarian powers on our present and future aesthetics. Such work acts as a springboard for themes reflecting and responding to our times.
THE MINISTRY OF BISCUITS Thurs 23 – Sat 25, Thurs 30 Nov
Lantern Theatre Produced by the award-winning The Foundry Group, Philip Reeve’s brilliant, satirical, musical demands we think before munching that next biscuit. In post-war London, The Ministry of Biscuits casts its sinister shadow over every tea-time and elevenses in the land. Established to “control biscuits, and to control the idea of biscuits,” it prohibits decadent sweetmeats, such as the Gypsy Cream. But when Cedric Hobson, a junior designer, falls in love and designs a biscuit to “shake confectionery to its very foundations,” his world – and the ministry – are turned upside down.

JINKX MONSOON By Stuart Rolt Forget everything you thought you knew about modern music. The Vaudevillians are reclaiming the origin stories of a few well-loved pop tunes. During the Twenties this pair were wowing audiences with their edgy and original music. But tragedy struck when touring Antarctica, as a devastating avalanche instantly froze them alive. Through the miracle of global warming, they were fortunately (and somewhat improbably) recovered - only to discover their songs had been appropriated by some of music’s biggest stars. “We’re here to give you a little historical context behind some of your favourite pop songs,” says the show’s co-writer, performer and drag superstar, Jinkx Monsoon. “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun was actually written by The Vaudevillians in the 20s as a reflection on the suffragette movement. A lot of people don’t know that.” A rowdy musical comedy, it robustly melds vintage cabaret with a twist of drag, and enjoyed repeatedlyextended runs off-Broadway. There’s also been a soldout Australian tour and an enormously successful stint at London’s Soho Theatre. Soon heading to The Old Market in Hove, Monsoon regards the show as one of their strongest works. “It’s so ridiculous and unique. It’s an idiotic concept but I always think some of the best cabaret work is.” Back home, America’s LGBTQ population is increasingly under pressure. Years of progress is being slowly eroded, both by lawmakers and newly legitimised far-right options. Monsoon admits to existing in something of a bubble, only ever living in the country’s more liberal enclaves. But the situation is impossible to ignore. “From what I can tell, no one is happy. You can’t go two days without hearing about something from this administration which is obviously an attack on our community.” Only recently has the US begun to be more fair and equal for all its citizens, regardless of gender, sexual orientation or ethnicity, but this situation is reversing. Sections of the government are actively trying to repeal legislation which protects its diversity. “It’s under the guise of: ‘it’s all for the good of America’ and ‘trying to repair
what’s wrong with the country’. If you’re not a rich white male, you’re considered an after-thought when it comes to the legal system.” It’s clearly difficult to live under a system which doesn’t represent you in any way. Even more so when it’s staffed by extremists who are demonising your community in the name of ‘values’. After already performing drag for more than a decade, Monsoon sprung to global attention as the Season Five winner on RuPaul’s Drag Race. They also managed to win whilst rising above the show’s notoriously bitchy backstage antics. “I was just there to do my best as a performer and an entertainer. I wasn’t there to get sucked into the bullshit.” There’s certainly gratitude for living amongst a generation who can find a platform on television. “It’s very surreal, but I try to count my blessings every day.” Drag Race has undeniably presented a whole new world for them as a performer, enabling a certain playfulness when it comes to expression. Personal inspiration draws from a lot of different sources. There’s an air of old-school sophistication - Marilyn Monroe, Betty Davis, Carol Burnett and Lucille Ball have all left a mark on Monsoon. More contemporary entertainers, like Deven Green, Sarah Silverman and Margaret Cho, are also cited as influences. “I really to take the old and the new, then combine them in a way where you can’t really place me in any onetime period. Mathu Andersen, who was RuPaul’s make-up artist for eight seasons, gave me the tagline which I still like to use today - ‘a gorgeous anachronism.’” Jinkx Monsoon & Major Scales’ The Vaudevillians comes to The Old Market on Thurs 30 Nov – Fri 1 Dec www.jinkxmonsoon.com www.theoldmarket.com

RUSSELL BRAND Sun 5 Nov Brighton Dome
ROB NEWMAN Mon 6 Nov Komedia
Britain’s shyest man returns with another eloquent and uprorious show – Re:Brith. It seems his wild days of sexual incontinence and grandiose political statements are being left behind. Life is now filled with a stable relationship, fatherhood and possibly contentment for Russell Brand. Of course, this has brought with it a new set of challenges and situations.
The technically-gifted and wonderfully hilarious Rob Newman is testing out A History of Western Philosophy, a brand new (and probably controversial) show inspired by his recent Radio 4 series – Neuropolis. This award-winning programme saw him attempt to decode the mysteries over the human brain and how society can affect behaviour. During the last twenty-five years he has continually surprised audiences with innovations, surprise changes of direction and inspired thinking. This show will be no exception to that tradition.
ED GAMBLE Weds 15 Nov Komedia After the huge success of his 2016 tour, the ‘gobby little toe-rag’ Ed Gamble is back with a brand-new lumbering beast of a comedy show. Capable of drawing humour from just about anything, he’s recently been lighting up TV shows like Mock the Week, Comedy Central’s Drunk History, and Russell Howard’s Stand Up Central. Mammoth brings together another selection of brilliant observational comedy, he’s quick, self-deprecating and unable to supress any internal monologues. From moaning about his ‘Coldplay Face’ to exposing the truth behind his marathon running and fitness regime, he’s a aware and masterful comedian, who cleverly interweaves gags throughout.
Newman strikes a perfect balance between humour and taking valuable moral questions. Information can be entertaining is probably his point here. Passionate, occasionally chaotic and dazzlingly witty, he continues to tower over British comedy.
The Britain’s Got Talent legend returns, so she can share some of her top tips with you! This amazing children’s theatre spectacular will be divulging all her secrets on how to be original. A singersongwriter, performer, and now author, Lorraine invites you into a uniquely creative, colourful world where everything can inspire – from wild animals to apple crumble. Taking the form of workshops and performances, Be Original features quirky songs, interactive games and creative challenges. Children will be encouraged to write catchy choruses and submit them in an online competition, in a thoughtful and in a show which inspires everyone to make their own original music.
Get ready to learn everything you ever wanted to know about everything... ever. This silly, surreal and satirical fast-paced comic adventure races through history from the dawn of time to the present day. From Ancient Rome to the Millennium Dome, telegraphy to the mobile phones, Tudors, Trump and Tory capers, Persians, peace signs and the Panama papers. This is history gleefully explored and filtered at a ferocious pace.

So, he’s turning his philosophical attentions to some universal questions. Like: ‘How do we make sense of the madness of our lives once we become parents? JASON BYRNE Sat 25 Nov The Old Market
With too many awards to list in this limited space, the UK’s most influential activist, performer and author unleashes a brandnew show. Few could have anticipated the events of 2016, and even fewer seem to know where they will lead us or where we are going.
Warm yourselves in these darkening months with a generous helping of goodnatured satire. The fireworks are not just from Bonfire Night. Sparks are flying in parliament as the ‘Maybot’ clings on for dear life and ‘Obi Wan’ Corbyn hovers in the wings.
But fear not! Thomas is setting out to discover what the future has in store for us by collecting and examining his own predictions and those of his audiences before literally taking a gamble on their outcome. By making futurologists of us all, he will create a fantastical, hilarious and possibly accurate vision of the world. And maybe even make a few quid on the side.
As for the other treats in this topical sketch show, we couldn’t possibly predict them at this early juncture. Although, it’s a safe bet the company’s extravagant orangetinged wig will be getting an outing. Brexit, Trump and all that’s new and unapproved are in the Treason Show’s sights, along with bang up-to-date songs, sketches, and your favourite characters, all in a bumper edition of the UK’s biggest and best live satirical show.
The highly acclaimed, versatile and extremely funny Jason Byrne presents a brand-new show –The Man With Three Brains. Apparently, his three brains kick into action when he hits the stage. His left brain scans the audience and room, looking for improv moments. His right brain collates stand-up material and stunts, poised to dish out the funnies at speed. His centre brain is Jason’s coach, pushing him to the limit. It’s been a busy few years for Byrne. In addition to his extensive touring worldwide, his Radio 2 show was awarded the UK radio industry’s prestigious Sony Radio Gold Award. As well as fronting his comedy chat show Jason Byrne's Snaptastic Show for Ireland’s TV3, he’s co-host of Sky 1’s brilliant Wild Things.

MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS Fri 3 Nov
INGRID GOES WEST
JUSTICE LEAGUE Fri 17 Nov
Just in case you thought there weren’t enough super-hero films, sequels and spin off’s, Warner Bro’s are releasing one of DC Comics based super hero team. Months after the events of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) is inspired by Superman’s selfless act, and has a restored faith in humanity. Bruce Wayne, AKA Batman enlists a new ally Diana Prince, known by some as Wonder Woman, to face a great threat. The two soon recruit a new team of costume wearing cool kids and together they will try to work against a new-found enemy, Supervillain Steppenwolf. The catastrophic themes they face throughout the film feel similar to the worries we face today, but unfortunately our reality of a possible nuclear war doesn’t involve super-heroes and a bad ass soundtrack.
Based on the book with the same name by best-selling novelist Agatha Christie, this thrilling film is not far off resembling a game of Cluedo. A luxurious trip throughout Europe quickly turns sour following a murder that takes place on, you guessed it, The Orient Express. The passengers have not much choice but to remain on the long-distance train, with everyone as suspect, when Belgian detective Hercule Poirot arrives to interrogate the thirteen strangers and try to solve the case. The film features a selection of classic actors including Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Penelope Cruz and the lady whose face is on our screens almost as much as the beloved Trump: Judi Dench. For a film full of pretty faces, uncertainty and crime at its most glamorous, this film is set to be a big hit. Just remember, you can’t trust anyone. In a day and age where social media is becoming increasingly popular and arguably more important than getting a degree, Ingrid Goes West is a story following a young woman who is a social media stalker. She, like much of the youth today, repeatedly mistakes “likes” for meaningful relationships – who says romance is dead? - and finds herself flitting from one social media obsession to the next. After the tragic loss of her mother, she travels to LA to escape her dull life and befriend Taylor Sloane; an Instagram celebrity (yes, they exist). The two of them form an unlikely friendship together, but appearances soon start to crack and soon enough the bitchiness presents comic results. Aubrey Plaza as Ingrid delivers her usual strong performance as a young girl in a technological world.

BATTLE OF THE SEXES Fri 24 Nov
Battle of the Sexes is an American biographical film is an adaptation of the real-life events that took place in 1973, one of the most televised sporting events of all time, a tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. Emma Stone plays Billie Jean King, a woman who has been fighting for women’s equal pay. Whilst one of comedy’s favourite actors Steve Carell plays Bobby Riggs, a man not favoured by many especially not the ladies who witness his sexist slurs on television. The rivalry between the two intensifies as the match draws closer as the media provokes the two, however there are deeper themes running through the film like gender equality, sexuality and sexism, and it follows Billie on a difficult journey facing issues that were more prominent in the 70’s. If you fancy yourself a funnier, more entertaining version of Wimbledon then this film is one to watch. Hold the Pimms.

Now we again follow Nola Darling and her lovers. She refuses to solely commit to one, but some may just call that greedy. Darling is an artist in her late twenties living in Brooklyn juggling three men, her job demands and a social life. This independent lady will face some obstacles in her life including the trouble with dating multiple men can bring, or even the labels she’ll get. Who knows? Maybe love is just cursed by monogamy.
LOST IN THE LANES REVIEW BY ANYA ZERVADUCHI
I first discovered Lost In The Lanes on instagram (@lostinthelaines), and was immediately completely taken in by the beautiful interiors and absolutely delicious looking food. I was slightly taken aback as I soon gathered this gorgeous little cafe had opened en-route of my regular walking paths through the Lanes, and I had not yet discovered it. The cafe is situated on Nile Street as you head towards Brighton Place but you definitely do have to keep an eye out for it! The decor and vibe of the place is right up my street, quite minimalistic but with an air of sophistication Think stylish light bulbs, dark warn woodwork, a gorgeous dabbled grey interior with splashes of copper and even a few inspirational quotes on the walls. I am huge fan of being greeted by a lavish almost overflowing counter with bowls of delicious looking vegetables dishes and fresh salads - impossible to ignore the mouth-watering cake display which I scarcely allowed myself to look at for fear of over indulgence.
The menu doesn’t disappoint - although it is fast becoming a fixture of many a Brighton bunch menu - my eyes always light up at the sight of Avocado toast! I also spot another of my all-time favourites and a not-so-easy to come by choice of Shakshuka - spicy slow roasted heritage tomatoes with organic free range baked egg with toasted sourdough. YUM. Aside from the classic breakfast offerings of full breakfasts and eggs, Lost In The Lanes also caters well for the fast growing vegan culture and has a fantastic selection of nutrition packed options like the picture-perfect Acai Bowl. A key focus for Lost In The Lanes is the quality of the coffee and food, which in my opinion they have managed to get bang on. I really love the tranquillity of the space and should mention that the ginger Kombucha is one of the best I’ve had (although not made on site, a ‘must try’ if you are a fan of fermented tea). As it says on the tin, this place might be ‘lost’, but it is worth finding! An absolute hidden gem, perfect for a coffee with your laptop, a weekend brunch or even an evening of private dining! One to watch as my new favourite coffee shop in town.

Cloven Hoof rum
As Brits one thing we all love is a bit of boozing. Well, a lot of boozing. The variety of alcohol has become so extensive from wine, to your IPA’s and APA’s to marmalade vodka, we’re really spoilt for choice. The thing is, not many – if any – question the origin of the alcohol we are happily guzzling, if it tastes good (and makes us feel good) that’s all that’s on our minds.
Then, what makes a great spiced rum? Spices of course! Vanilla was a flavour that was avoided as using more natural and unusual tones that complimented the palate was the goal. Again, plenty of tasting took place, subjects being Pauls friends and patrons at the pub until a secret recipe was created that could not have been improved any more. Hey, presto, Cloven Hoof was born.
However, for pub landlord Paul Stanley, this wasn’t the case. Having worked with alcohol for a living, Paul became cynical about mass imported and corporate marketed alcohol. He was aware the rums that are branded Caribbean, are not so much, with their fake history and Caribbean themed captains to fool us into thinking so. These rums usually come white in colour and are dyed and polluted with cheap flavourings. Unhappy about the whole concept, Paul set out to make his own special, authentic spiced rum. Not concerned about a gap in the market or sales orientated “office pop” Paul knew what people really wanted from a good drink.
Now the recipe had been nailed, a name had to be thought up. One evening sitting around drinking rum, one of these renegade rebels thought up Cloven Hoof. “Why?” They asked, “Because the Devil made us do it” she replied. They fell about laughing and knocked back the remains with a toast and on that day this satanic libation was born.
The rum ‘blended in hell’ has become a devilish success since its launch in Brighton in 2016 and has widespread listings throughout the U.K. is the top selling rum at The Rum Festival which is the country’s first ever travelling rum festival. This naughty but nice rum has almost revolutionised the world of the drink, bringing back the originality to the Caribbean born beverage. So why not grab yourself a glass, or hell, a bottle, and raise the hoof!

First, finding the perfect base rum was crucial, in order to find this, hundreds of rums were imported in small batches from the Caribbean and other countries in South America and Africa. After much blending, testing and tasting Paul discovered a wonderful combination of delicious flavours. The two rums that were eventually married together were one from Guyana, on the coast of South American from the Diamond Distillery. This is caramelised naturally with local Demerara sugar and then aged in Bourbon casks. Rum number two is a lighter rum from Trinidad which balances out the more intense flavours of the one from Guyana.
At Pauls pub, customers couldn’t get enough of Cloven Hoof, with him struggling to keep up with demand. Feeling guilty about keeping this delectable punch to themselves, too, he decided to produce it on a larger scale and go to market. The base ingredients are now shipped into the docks of Liverpool and are mixed and bottled down the road in nearby Chorley by H&A Prestige. Paul passed on the rum blend and his secret recipe to H&A Prestige who replicate the original product on his behalf.

Paris
in Winter By Becky Waldron
The French capital is one of Europe’s biggest cities, roaring with culture, beautiful architecture and fine food on every street. Despite what cinema may suggest, Paris is more than just attractive people gloomily smoking cigarettes in monochrome. This season proves as good a time as any to visit, where the tourists are sparse, but the vibrancy of the city still burns bright.
Of course, attractions like the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame are musts to pass by whilst walking through the magically lit up Paris, but when the cold weather calls venture inside to the wide range of music, theatre and art on offer. Les Franglaises is an award-winning musical which will be running in the grand theatre Bobino, which has seen some of biggest names of 20th century French music perform. This light-hearted comedy about British and American pop culture, puts a fresh and funny twist on these songs and incorporating the idea of language into the play. It’s perfect for banishing winter blues, and an evening out for the family or with your other half. If art is more your forte, an exhibition highlighting the work on Picasso in 1932 is on at the Musée Picasso-Paris. This will give you a chance to observe some of the artists greatest masterpieces as well as following his creative path and works in many mediums. The Museum of Modern art will also be offering an exceptional exhibition on ‘Being Modern’ featuring exquisite works from the likes of Paul Cezanne and Alexander Caulder. For something more festive, a stroll down the Avenue des Champs-Elysees will transport you to a wonderland at night, decorated with 400 Christmas trees and bedazzling illuminations. Amidst the starry avenue sits a Christmas market hosting over 200 chalets of arts, crafts and gourmet goodness. Here you can treat yourself mug of mulled wine or a tartiflette; a rich cheese and potato dish of the French cuisine. For a fun finish to the evening, head down to the nearby ice rink in a perfect setting for an annual outdoor skate. Foodies pay attention because no trip to the Capital is complete without cheese and wine! The Noel Gourmad showcases a three-day array of farmhouse cheeses, regional dishes, spices, seafood, salted meat, foie gras, wine and confectionery from the best artisans in France. Or how about a bite to eat on a boat that will cruise along the infamous River Seine? Le Marais is an area of Paris with much architectural and historical importance, made up of small crooked medieval lanes, crammed full of boutiques, culture and of course more food and drink. This authentically European adventure will immerse you in a truly Parisian world. La Belle Hortense is a little blue fronted gem which will be worthy of making your last stop. This bookshop-wine cellar makes for a perfect winter evening of tranquillity, booze and books. The walls are lined with literature varying from poetry to classic collections, to rare finds, and is accompanied by enormous wine list - C’est magnifique!
