EDITOR'S MESSAGE: It’s another month, and another issue covering the very best in Brighton & Hove’s cultural events. Let’s hope it all stays relevant in the face of impending and rather unsexy nuclear annihilation. Two men, both ill-equipped to lead and preoccupied by an irrational sense of their own greatness, are happy to take their nations to the brink of destruction. All the dick-waving is simply a distraction from very real issues affecting normal citizens in their country. What can anyone do about this? Not much really, apart from grasp at the sheer folly of it all. If I don’t get to see the next two Star Wars films, just because of two slap-talking attention seekers, I will be very disappointed.

Arundel Castle are celebrating their 950th anniversary alongside closing their 2017 open season with an exciting experience alongside Norman Knights in the Keep. The Keep will be a two day journey throughout history playing host to the figures in the 12th century, recreating sights and sounds of Britain around that era. Those attending the two day spectacle will also be transported back to the time of the Cousins War in 1135-54, which has also been called The Anarchy. This will present a chance for attendees to catch a glimpse of what combat entails as well as a life of a Norman soldier. If arts and craft are something that is more appealing, visitors can immerse themselves in some crafts of the late Norman period including leatherwork and naal, which is an early form of knitting. Not only are Arundel Castle hosting two days of thrilling activities, but also an educational day out, as Norman Knights in the Keep will be complementing Key Stage 2 and 3 curriculums. Amongst the luscious setting of the Castle, taking place October 25th- 27th this will be a great way to spend your half term.

Upon conviction, British rogues, guilty of at least one of the 19 Crimes, were sentenced to live in Australia, rather than death. This punishment by ‘transportation’ began in 1788, and many of the lawless died at sea.

TRU THOUGHTS ROBERT LUIS INTERVIEW
FUNKIN' THEM ALL It’s a long way from hosting sweaty hip-hop parties to celebrating your record company’s 18th birthday at Brighton & Hove’s most prestigious venue. For Tru Thoughts co-owner Robert Luis, it’s a journey packed with great music, passion and plenty of soul power. “For me, the best-case scenario when the label started was it’d still be there and I’d still be doing nights,” he tells me. “There wasn’t a perception of ‘18 years later’. Part of what we’ve done hasn’t been about looking back, we’re always looking forwards.” After building his Phonic Hoop night into a staple of the local clubbing scene, the next step was to release a few singles and compilations. The aim was to develop a new challenge, whilst releasing some music he could also play out. Then 2000 saw the release of Bonobo's Animal Magic debut, which sparked a surge in the down-tempo scene. Suddenly, everything began to get serious. This album, with its ethereal, funk-kissed electronica, was a distinct step away from the more B-boy orientated sounds Luis had broken through with. However, Bonobos enthusiastic, truthful, and innovative approach to music-making would set the blueprint for every artist the company later invested in. “Our belief does influence things. I saw that early on. People can tell if a label or an artist is believing in their own music. I’m always saying to artists: ‘Never make a record for me or Tru Thoughts. Make a record for yourself, then try and convince me.’” Now the label’s joyous eclecticism sees releases as diverse as Latino experimentation, funk, brushes with psychedelia, jazz fusion and grime.
12
Luis guides a roster of artists like Quantic, Hidden Orchestra, Space Captain, Anchorsong, Alice Russell and Lakuta. It’s a broad spectrum, which reflects musical tastes on a global scale. “My taste in music is quite broad. I like musical things; I like hip hop, jungle and all that hard style, but what we found
By Stuart Rolt
early on with Quantic and Bonobo was that people liked the fact they used samplers but were also playing instruments.” It’s always about releasing interesting music. The signing of Quantic and his dancefloor-friendly jazz fusion enabled a bold evolution, which even Luis couldn’t prophesise. The subsequent embracing of Cumbia, a vibrant Latin dance style, might not have happened on another label. “I didn’t know anything about the Colombian scene. He was staying at my house after doing some gigs and he had an accordion. I was like: ‘What’s going on?’ Then he explained that scene to me.” By his own admission, when Luis signed Quantic, he wasn’t anticipating releasing accordion music. But passion and innovation from artists is what drives Tru Thoughts forwards. “With the world of streaming services people are a lot more open-minded. Doing the Green Door Store the other week, we had a death metal band on before. I thought no-one is going to stay for my night (Sonic Switch). But about 30 or 40 people stayed on. It made me realise it’s not like it used to be with tribalism. That barrier has gone, and that’s a great thing.” He hopes there’s understanding with people, that whatever the label releases, from the leftfield to the party-starters, it will sit alongside the very best in its genre. After a sell-out live show part of Brighton Festival this year, Tru Thoughts return to the Dome for a special party with some of their most important artists. “Paul (co-owner) said: ‘Let’s just do the Dome!’ We should do something in Brighton to celebrate. Also it might be another 18 years before we can get all of those artists together at the same time.” The event brings together Quantic (DJ set), Hot 8 Brass Band and Alice Russell, along with new signings Werkha and Bryony Jarman-Pinto, bolstered by DJ sets from la Luis, Wrongtom and J-Felix.

For many in the industry the path to glory can be hardgoing. Overnight success is rare for musicians and producers. Many will still have a part time job to support themselves. Luis is aware of the need to widen participation. If the scene is reliant on parents funding musicians it might not get the best artists. “It’s maybe not as bad as that - Grime has got through from people who struggled. I feel there’s a lot of money in the music industry, so maybe there’s something that needs to be done help support those people who come from relatively poor backgrounds.” For all his artists, he endeavours to help them understand the business side. The industry can be “a minefield”. Sitting in on meetings or learning appreciate why certain strategies work is increasingly important. For the talent, a big attraction of signing to Tru Thoughts is that it’s run by fellow musicians and music fans. “They have a certain passion for the artist’s vision and desires, and are fully devoted to working hand in hand with the artist to see it through.” Bennie from Hot 8 Brass Band tells me. Luis’ first US signing, these Grammy-nominees collide the exuberance of a New Orleans Mardi Gras party with funk and hip-hop. In the last few years, their songs have featured in several films and commercials, while the band now draw massive live audiences around the world. “I believe staying committed and focused to the strategy we both collectively put in place, has allowed us both to prosper throughout certain problems or issues that come with making it to the next level,” he continues. Hot 8 Brass Band are the epitome of Tru Thought’s lesstraditional approach to generating success and cultural impact. But then this is more than just a record company. And its artists all feel proud to represent a family of likeminded individuals. Ostensibly the focus for everybody is on being creative. As a DJ, Luis is always looking for interesting music, and as a boss he simply gets excited by a challenge. “It’s about capturing the moment. Sometimes it will just click in. Everything’s a gamble. If there was a magic formula, there’d be one person who was very, very rich.” The Tru Thoughts 18th Birthday celebrations come to Brighton Dome on Weds 18 Oct. www.brightondome.org www.tru-thoughts.co.uk

Pete Rock and CL Smooth Mon 16 Oct Concorde 2
Bluegrass shoegazer Micah returns to Brighton with a full band and much-anticipated new material. Described as a ‘modern folk opera’, concept album ‘Presents the Holy Strangers’ tells the story of a war time family from birth, love, marriage and children, to war, betrayal and suicide. Recorded in Denison, Texas, the album incorporates ancient reels to reels, analogue keyboards and archaic Tascam and Yamaha desk to weave a haunting yet euphoric soundscape. From the Johnny Cash-style country single “Lover’s Lane,” to the album’s broad, spoken-word centrepiece “Micah Book One”, the album will appeal to both long time and new fans alike. Micah’s last show in Brighton was a sell-out affair, so get hold of tickets while you still can. ‘Presents the Holy Strangers’ is out 18th September on Full Time Records www.micahphinson.com
Legendary hip hop duo Pete Rock and CL Smooth are back in town as part of their 2017 european tour, armed with their laid back blend of philosophical lyrics, jazz-infused old skool beats and soul. From producing for legends like Heavy D and the Boyz, Public Enemy and Nas to Inspiring newer artists such as Clear Soul Forces and Coops, it’s clear hip hop history would be missing a sizeable chunk without them in it.

LIGHTYEAR Sat 28 Oct The Haunt They formed, then they split, then they regrouped, then they split again, then they reformed...you can guess the rest. But in an age where bands have no original members bar the frontman, it’s refreshing to see a band whose original lineup remains, despite numerous hiatuses. Their ethic is ‘whatever happens, we all stay mates’, refreshing stuff in the cut-throat, competitive world of music. This mantra is reflected in their energetic live shows - expect stage diving brass sections, impromptu Morris dancing, fire breathing and even some great music when Derby ska-punkers Lightyear come to town. In May 2017, the band announced on Social Media that they would be reforming permanently and recording new material. www.facebook.com/lightyearofficial

Electro-indie darlings Metronomy returned t to the live arena earlier this year after a 2 y year break from touring with a string of live dates which included a triumphant and v victorious sold-out show at London’s Brixton A Academy, a fiery headline set at G Glastonbury’s John Peel stage, and an e emotional headline performance at the last e ever Secret Garden Party (sob). It’s a welcome return for the band, after last y year’s phenomenal ‘Summer ‘08’ produced a and performed by Joe Mount alone, was never toured. There will be sweat, there will be dancing but most importantly there will be the energy and technicality characteristic of the current lineup together onstage. T This is definitely a sellout affair - grab y yourself a ticket now. ‘Summer 08’ is out now on Because Music. www.metronomy.co.uk www.metronomy.co.uk
Canadian post-rockers Godspeed You! Black Emperor return to the Dome after their previous enthralling and immersive sell-out show. Formed in 1994 from humble beginnings, their abstract musical outputs won them the attention of the late John Peel and publication The Wire, who named the band as one of their favourites allowing them to gain the global cult following they have today. Fans can hear tracks from ‘Luciferian Towers’, the follow up to critically acclaimed ‘Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress’ (2015) The band sold out their last Brighton show back in 2015 proving that their following and influence has not waned at all. Don’t miss out on this experience at any cost! ‘Luciferian Towers’ is released September on Constellation www.brainwashed.com/godspeed

MOSES SUMNEY Mon 30 Oct Komedia Since emerging onto the scene in 2014, California boy Moses Sumney has ridden a wave of word-of-mouth praise backed up by hushed recordings and dynamic live performances. It’s an organic, patient ascent all too rare in today’s fast-paced musical climate. In a voice both mellifluous and haunting, Sumney makes futuristic, jazzy music; his vocals narrate a personal journey over otherworldly compositional backdrops, reminiscent of the late Jeff Buckley with a soulful dash of Prince. Now releasing his debut fulllength album, described as ‘an intimate concept record about lovelessness as a sonic dreamscape’ his star is certainly rising, stopping off at Komedia on the 30th October along the way! ‘Aromanticism’ is released on 22nd September on jagjaguar www.mosessumney.com

LOST HORIZONS – SIMON RAYMONDE INTERVIEW By Stuart Rolt
W e l c o m e to Shangri-La Simon Raymonde has been championing a diverse and inspiring range of artists for over two decades. His label, Bella Union, has housed acts like The Flaming Lips, Fleet Foxes, Susanne Sundfør and John Grant. In a way it’s consolidated his broad musical taste, but he always felt like something was missing - especially when its 20th birthday loomed. “When you do a landmark thing like that…I suppose you are looking back quite a lot,” he tells me. “It made me realise: ‘Why aren’t you making music? This is how you got here.’” So here we are. A few days in the studio with a dear friend and a busload of guest vocalists has led Raymonde to a new band and a new album. Lost Horizons, and their evocative debut Ojalá, sees Raymonde reunite with long-time collaborator Ritchie Thomas. Their shared history traces back to the 80s. Thomas served as the drummer for Dif Juz, a proto-post-rock act who Raymonde still describes as the best live band he’s ever seen. Thomas would also collaborate with Raymonde’s band - Cocteau Twins. Dif Juz even helped construct their first studio. Come the new millennium and both had faded from the release schedules. “I’m not even sure what he does now. He lives in Croatia half the year, but I knew I wanted it to be him and no-one else.” They subsequently holed up in a London studio for a few days, improvising and letting the music flow. “Everything has been super-fun, because there is no pressure. I do have to satisfy my own thought processes though, that’s the hard bit.” We’re sat in a reassuringly quirky Hove café, located in the same building as Raymonde’s studio where much of the album’s post-production took place. He freely admits to ‘control freak’ tendencies, especially when it comes to music, so he needed collaborators who understood his vision for the record – and could lend their own distinctiveness to it. Each track was so singular it actually demanded different vocalists. “I’d finish a piece of music and think: ‘I know who needs to sing that. It was very natural.” Finding fame with a band like Cocteau Twins, whose singer Elizabeth Fraser possesses one of music’s most distinctive voices, creates certain public expectation of everything to follow. The inevitable comparisons once deterred him from releasing records, until now. An instrumental record would not have worked anyway. Clearly he writes with vocal melodies in mind. As a whole, this new collection reveals a love affair with layered melodies and melancholic harmonies. Thomas’ unique percussion style stretches from dub and rock through to more avantgarde styles, and so adds a blissful urgency to the album. It feels organic and like something which has sprung from a shared love of music.
The band’s name was inspired, without hesitation, by Frank Capra‘s 1937 film, Lost Horizon. An adaptation of the James Hilton novel, the story established the concept of Shangri-La - a utopia offering answers to all the confusion and bewilderment in the Western world. “I love the imagery of the film. The promo shot of the movie has been on my computer for 20 years.” Suitably, there’s an exotic air of mystery to this album, in both its music and packaging. The latter is peppered with subtly interlinked photos, while one of the formats comes as zeotropic picture disc. What was intended to be a work of just nine or ten songs, somehow swelled into a 15-track epic. “I spoke to Duncan, who does our [Bella Union’s] press. I knew he’d be like: ‘I don’t want a double it’s hard enough to get journalists to listen to a single record.’ He’s brutal, he doesn’t care if it’s me and I need that. He came back and said there’s no wastage on there and we should put it out.” The finished product is a diverse hour of solidly lovely indie pop. Sometimes mournful and often dramatic, but it rarely fails to delight. Recently he’s been playing bass with Mercury Rev on their ambitious shows with Royal Northern Sinfonia, but Raymonde has shied away from taking centre stage himself. With this new project, and by surrounding himself with the right people, he no longer feels the strain of carrying everything – now feeling able to be ‘standing at the back having a laugh.’ “It’s partly why I’ve said yes to doing this. I really enjoyed it again. I never really enjoyed playing live before - not with the Cocteaus anyway. Maybe that was me being younger and having two kids and the pressure of that with being away all the time.” He’s assembled a full live band, with three female and two male singers, each swapping roles to recreate the album’s complex layers. There are definite plans to tour, with festival and UK dates already booked in. I do ask Raymonde if, perhaps, he isn’t busy enough with running a successful record label. Apparently, the bulk of Ojalá took just eight days; such was everyone’s focus on the project. Not exactly an arduous length of time. “If it was a slog I wouldn’t do it, because I’m quite lazy. I get the moment and I take it. I can do it and it fits into my life without creating a major rumpus - which it can do when you’re in a relationship. But I’ve worked out the balance now, which is quite nice. It’s only taken me 55 years.” Lost Horizons play Brighton’s Rialto Theatre on Sat 18 Nov. Their debut album Ojalá is released on Fri 3 Nov, via Bella Union.

ALL THE GIRLS. ALL THE HITS. ALL THE HAIR
blondie INTERVIEW WITH CLEM BURKE BY ANDY HOLLIS Mention Blondie to the average Joe, who can just about hum themselves through Sunday Girl, and the immediate response will be “Debbie Harry”. For those that can move up that scale and cobble their way through the French bit, they might offer Chris Stein as well. But to the genuinely initiated, there are three superstars in Blondie, and drummer Clem Burke (pictured far left) puts a lot of the band’s longevity down to that fact “I’m the drummer in a great band. We’ve never seen ourselves as a backup band to Debbie. The way we’re set out is more like The Beatles or The Who – it’s a group of individual rock and roll stars, and I think that’s part of the reason we’ve endured and have the credibility that we do”. Indeed, you’d be hard pressed to find a drummer with the type of credentials Clem Burke boasts – as well as Blondie, Burke has played alongside the likes of Pete Townsend, Bob Dylan (“a complete one off”), Eurythmics, Joan Jett (“rock and roll personified”), Iggy Pop (“another one-off and great to see him finally getting his due”) and even a brief spell as Elvis Ramone, providing the beat for “our generation’s Beatles”, The Ramones. Speaking to Burke in his hotel room in Liverpool, the thing that most notably comes across is his pure, unadulterated love of just getting out there and playing music. “I’ve just come off from playing with a band in a pub in Liverpool” says the maestro, and you wonder how many in the pub knew quite whom they were in the presence of. More to the point, you get the impression Burke wouldn’t care – he was out there having fun. “I need to work with other people and get that exchange of ideas, feel that camaraderie. As much as anything, it keeps me in shape for Blondie. I’ve been lucky enough to work with and collaborate with so many brilliant artists”.
18
The theme of collaboration is a pertinent one, Blondie are about to start touring their new album, Pollinator, which sees them co-writing with the likes of Sia, Mark Ronson, Charlie XCX and Johnny Marr.
“It’s something we’ve been trying to make happen for some time. The past couple of albums, the good songs never really came to life until we played them live. This time the songs are sounding great from the off though, because we did just that. We went in and recorded them live”. When I raise the point about pulling in the writers ‘du jour’ to complement, or indeed bolster the new record, I’m reined in by Burke’s point about Blondie’s history – “Blondie is actually a band with a real history of covers. Denise Denise, Out In The Street, Hanging On The Telephone. They’re all covers, but people think of them as Blondie songs because we were able to make them our own and inject that particular Blondie sound and feel to them”. I ask to have that defined, “the sound of Blondie is innately New York”, which somehow make perfect sense looking back at the inventive, slightly dangerous, feel of the 1970s Big Apple. “We’re an innovative band but still influenced a lot by what came before, and our contemporaries. We all had common ground in listening to bands like Velvet Underground and New York Dolls, but we also incorporated a lot of what was going on around us too, like Talking Heads and The Ramones. We weren’t afraid to experiment by injecting a bit of R&B, dance or disco”. Which of course makes perfect sense when you think of the over-enthusiastic punter at the pub quiz citing Rapture as the first ever rap song. “Rapture wasn’t the first rap song. It was the first song with dialogue in it over a melody. Rap artists nowadays will sample melodies to incorporate into a rap. We came to that from the other way round”. At 61 now, Burke learned his craft drumming with a bugle corps where he learned how to “play to the song”. Speaking to friend, I was surprised to know how many considered him “my favourite ever drummer”, citing his marrying of precision with simplicity. Burke himself, although having
huge appreciation for the likes of the more pyrotechnic Keith Moon (“he showed me what not to do as a rock star”) namechecks Earl Palmer and Hal Blaine as his greatest influences. Again, the idea of endurance for a drummer being key raises it’s head in the conversation when speaking about greats of the past, and those that departed too early. Burke, as mentioned, seems to still be constantly touring and even has his own fitness foundation, the Clem Burke Drumming Projects in partnership with Chichester University which measures oxygen levels and heart rates in drummers – “endurance enables you to be a better player”. The ravages of touring, and the mental health challenges that go hand-in-hand with that have been front page news recently, with the tragic deaths of Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington. We talk a while about how a tour used to be used to promote a record, and now a record promotes a tour, but Burke has a refreshing outlook with regard to this – “I don’t do stuff I don’t want to do. I make sure I take care of myself, and I enjoy what I do. I’ve never really found it hard, and I’ve never really bought into the idea that there are these stresses and demands to my job. There are plenty of people who go to work every day hating what they do, just to get by. I’m fortunate in that I love what I’ve been lucky enough to do”. Long may that, and he, endure. AVALON EMERSON Sat 7 Oct Patterns This acclaimed seafront venue sees another specially curated night with one of dance music’s ascendant selectors - Avalon Emerson. It’s not easy to describe a DJ who draws from such a wide gamut of influences. One tune could almost be soulful and deep, while the next might be a techno growler which samples an 80s pop classic. Whatever comes out of the box, you can be sure it’s packed with melody and compelling rhythm – so just go along with everything, it will be fabulous. She’s bringing along the equally open-minded Pangaea, who approaches techno from another direction entirely. Along with a few house tracks, he can throw in tunes which draw from dubstep, swing and breakbeats, to create lively crossgenre mayhem.

Bringing some local flavour is Clayton, who always keeps the dance-floor moving with energetic galloping groovy beats, hypnotic flowing sounds and plenty of energy.
One-quarter of the mighty Three Chairs (a Detroit supergroup which also includes Rick Wilhite, Theo Parrish and Moodymann) heads to Brighton. Marcellus Pittman has been a stalwart of his local music scene since the ’90s, starting out with local hip-hop groups.

SKREAM Before I get a chance to speak with Olly Jones, our arrangements get changed as I am told he is off on a trip to Ibiza the next day; I can't help but feel slightly envious as I look outside at drizzly Brighton. More widely known on the scene as Skream, he picks up the phone and tells me he's got a “fucking slipped disc.” He sounds in pain, as he hobbles to a more appropriate spot to speak. It’s been a bit of a problem for him, but admirably, he continues to please audiences and power through shows. The London-born DJ/producer is an influential name in music, especially for dubstep, at the time giving this emergent genre a defining name. Not only did he arguably create the style, but helped with its evolution as it began to establish a huge fan base. What made Skream's tracks different is the more melodic sounds he added. Later he began experimenting with different genres, mixing dub with house and now plays a wide variety from techno to garage and grime. This creativity stems from his desire to not be like anyone else “We're in a world now where everyone is okay with music sounding the same... it's a little bit daunting,” He tells me. “So, it's like, do I want to have some massive record, or do I want to put something out I'm really proud of?” I am impressed when I hear that he has been DJing since aged 11, making music since he was 13, and his producing career took off when he was just 15. “It’s what we spent our childhood's doing”. I can tell this is a passion which comes naturally to him, DJing and music being something he has grown up with. He didn't attend much school, it not being something he enjoyed or a place encouraging a career in the entertainment industry.
22
His upcoming tour, Open to Close, sees dates all around the UK, as well as a date in Italy. He also plays sets in Ibiza regularly, but tells me Glasgow is one of his favourite places to play as it's a “different vibe out there”. Having partnered up with Elrow recently, Spain is a new place where Jones is also feeling the love, it's all non-stop apparently!
The Open to Close tour last year completely sold out, giving Skream a sense people had trust in what he does. His tour differs from his other time conscious sets: “It lets me do my thing, play what I want, what I don't get to do at every day club shows... it's very personal; it's music I buy, music I make, music I listen to. It's very much personal as it is about having a party.” One of the musician’s career highlights has been the praise and recognition he received for his remix of the La Roux song [In for the Kill], including getting a gold disc, alongside being part of an electronic music project Magnetic Man. Joining Skream were dubstep producers DJ Benga and Artwork (previously known as Menta). Their music was usually made up of a mix of original tracks collectively produced and live remixes of Benga and Skreams tracks, and Magnetic Man completed a first fulllength sell-out tour in 2010. Recently, Skream released his first single for a year. Face Down in the Water. It’s received a very positive response from his fans and industry peers, including drum and bass duo Rudimental. Oliver tells me that the track was actually produced around three years ago, but had some problems with mislaying the track and getting it signed, until now. He’s been off the scene for the past year, as he's been transitioning into a different genre of music. This can take a while to establish, but he's keen to get back to writing again and possibly working with more bands. When I ask him if he had any advice for budding musicians, he says: “The easy game is the quick game. Don't do it for money, do it for your passion, otherwise you're going to fail”. Any last words? “I'm about longevity, I want to be around forever.” Skream’s Open To Close extended DJ show comes to Brighton’s Patterns on Fri 4 Nov. www.patternsbrighton.com

BN1 visits the new nt Goldstone restaura at the
Amex Stadium By Lucy Hallett
Watching the game in style! I often find that by the time Sunday appears I’ve used up all my little grey cells during the week and can think of absolutely nothing that I want to do. More often than not my indecision means that I lay horizontally for most of the morning before drifting to the nearest pub serving a roast, feasting, then it’s off to reacquaint myself with the sofa for the rest of the day. However on Sun 24 Sept things were radically different as I was treated to Matchday Hospitality for the Albion V Newcastle game.
Y A D H C T A M
As much as I love the rowdy excitement of the football crowds post-match (especially if the result has gone our way), it was really nice catching a nearly empty train up to the Amex stadium due to us being a good couple of hours before kick-off.
We weaved our way to the East entrance and entered the rather lovely Goldstone Restaurant which had a naturally friendly atmosphere and lovely minimalist décor. In pride of place were black and white canvasses of heroic Brighton players through the years which really solidified not only how far the team had come but how deserving of their Premier League place they were. We were presented with a glass of Ridgeview - a personal favourite of mine and sat down to survey the menu. Millie, our lovely server came and enquired if we had chosen from the Meat, Fish and Vegetable sharing platters and also if we wanted anything more to drink as selected soft drinks, beers and wines are all included within the price.
pretty much in the centre of the Lower East Stand. The game kicked off and it was very much end to end stuff with Brighton seeming happy to play on the break. At half time there was a tense yet hopeful atmosphere as we retreated to the restaurant to quickly consume our pre-ordered drinks. Once back to our seats we didn't have to wait long for a goal as a dextrous volley from striker Tomer Hemed secured a one goal lead much to the frenzied delight of the Albion fans. The second half was without a doubt an uneasy one for the home team as a composed Newcastle side remained seemingly unshaken, however Brighton held their nerve and served up a one- nil win to a jubilant crowd.
Being meat-lovers of the most obsessive variety we went for the meat option of charcuterie, buffalo mozzarella and marinated olives and being far from teetotal we chose a bottle of Spanish white. The platter arrived and was fantastic; juicy large olives, creamy mozzarella, smoky chorizo and delectable slices of salami and Serrano. These were quickly gobbled up and washed down with the light and easy-drinking white.
We practically skipped back to the restaurant and were greeted again by our friendly server Millie asking if we wanted some more drinks. Feeling more than a little celebratory we ordered a bottle of plummy and fruity red and chatted excitedly about what was a very important win for Brighton. When the result is a good one I think it is hard to capture a better sense of unity than that created by the fans of a football team and this was no exception. Thinking that the day couldn't possibly get any better I actually managed to get a photo with the man of the match Hemed, and I'm sure his eardrums are still tingling from my over-excited screeching.
Sitting back contentedly it was with surprise that I noticed the presence of Alan Mullery, legendary player for multiple teams and manager of Albion between 76’ and 81’. His charismatic chatter and invitation of questions from the room was a fantastic interlude before the big game, especially as nerves were clearly getting the better of most of us. The wonderfully enthusiastic Ian - Commercial Executive at the club - came over and asked us our predictions, and while we knew that the team had been on a difficult run there was certainly a quiet optimism in the room. After ordering our drinks for half-time we made our way to the great seats
It is hard not to be intensely pleased with a day that combines excellent food, unlimited drinks, fantastic service and a game of football. I've had some brilliant days out recently but I can't think of a single one that tops my Matchday Hospitality experience at the Albion. Continuing our meaty theme, and because I find it nigh on impossible to turn down steak when it is offered to me I chose a 170g rib eye which was accompanied by huge portions of sautéed potatoes, tender stem broccoli, green beans, tomatoes and béarnaise sauce. The steak was melt in the mouth gorgeous and the crispy potatoes and perfectly cooked greens created a fantastically well-rounded meal. Sipping my wine and surveying the excitable pre-game buzz in the restaurant I realised I should channel the spirit of the team’s monumental rise into the Premier League and order dessert. Okay, okay I didn’t actually need much persuading when I looked at the menu and saw that they had a cherry sundae with amaretto on the menu. It was absolutely phenomenal; silky and sweet Sussex ice cream with whole cherries and a pipette of amaretto to wantonly pour over it all.

Having presented a Radio 4 show, been on some of the nations favourite shows including Mock the Week, 8 out of 10 Cats and Live at the Apollo there's something about this cheeky chap that audiences just can't get enough of. Maybe it’s his absence of pretentiousness, with an accent we can't help but giggle at, and his past as a window cleaner! Talk about starting from the bottom.
Thurs 5 Oct Komedia Fast Show star Simon Day is bringing his comedic multiple personalities to Komedia. Essex born comedian has more stand-up to share this October following a sell-out Edingburgh Festival season as well as her tour last year. The star has appeared on plenty of our favourite comedy shows as well as the ITV2 show Fake Reaction and reality programme Show Me The Funny. During her interview with Essex Live she described herself as being at her most funniest when she's being honest, which is reflected in her anecdotes and sometimes slightly crude yet relatable humour. The 2016 Funny Women Awards mentor has had hour long shows about marriage and singledom and her current tour This Guy will bring up just as comical topics including her discussion on whether or not she should breed...
This award-winning star is not least known for his role alongside David Walliams in Little Britain and Come Fly With Me, the shows that really tickled the UK's funny bone. Having continued with his acting onto the huge success that was Les Miserables in cinemas where he received great praise, to Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, Bridesmaids and more box office hits, this well-loved comedian is releasing his ‘Little Me: My Life From A-Z’ tour this year. The tour, he claims, is different from other memoirs we may have read, it literally comes in the form of A-Z, each letter representing something different to do with him and his life. There is no doubt that the recent Doctor Who star will provide a show with the playful comedy Britain has grown to adore.
Pajama Men, who also go by the names of Shenoah Allen and Mark Chavez, are a duo who have been building their specific and unusual style since they met in 1993. Their sets consist of stand up with a dash of sketch and hint of improvisation, creating a weird and wonderful spectacle. The outlandish characters and surreal storylines that Allen and Chavez create have an anarchic and inventive take on your average comedy show.

What do you get if you mix a messy haired, Hawaiian-shirt-wearing man with deadpan if not slightly neurotic comedy? Milton Jones of course. Milton is Out There again this year with his new tour, where he'll definitely be... well, out there. As always, this kooky comedian will be as punny as ever, with his terrible yet terrific one liners. Since winning Best Newcomer Award in 1996, Milton has continued to tour the country throughout the decades, hosting multiple radio shows and appearing frequently on Mock the Week where he tends to stare vacantly into the camera after a good joke, adding to his odd, and interesting style. He will be talking about his life so far - the ups, the downs and why buying his own seesaw was the best decision he ever made. Oh and now he wants to be Prime Minister too, maybe he will do politics a favour!
STEVE BUGEJA Thurs 12 Oct Komedia Join BBC New Comedy Award winner Steve Bugeja as he relives the fateful summer when he spent his time in America in his brand new show Summer Camp. A summer working at a kids camp, being mistaken for Prince Harry, like most men who have the English accent. This is his third solo show following the previous tour 'Unpronounceable' which became critically acclaimed sell-out runs at the Edinburgh Fringe. Steve Bugeja may be associated with the TV show that caused havoc for reality TV addicts: Love Island Aftersun (ITV2) as well as joking alongside Russell Howard in his Stand Up Central. Not only has he been named “Truly Hilarious” by Fest Mag, but his stories are compelling enough to keep you glued to your seat.
PAUL CHOWDHRY Sun 29 Oct Theatre Royal Brighton
Tues 24 - Thurs 26 Oct Brighton Centre
Comedy phenomenon Luisa Omielan is bringing her smash hit show Am I Right Ladies!? to Brighton. Her first show 'What Would Beyonce Do?!' was praised by The Guardian as being “one of the biggest stand up hits of the last decade” and was launched on BBC3 as a stand up special.
Not only has Paul Chowdhry previously sold out a 100 date tour in 2015, but has been labelled by The Mail on Sunday as “a stand up so vibrant and imperiously on top of his game “. Despite his not so huge TV profile, having appeared on a couple of Live at the Apollo's and hosting the last series of Stand Up For The Week, Chowdhry has one of the most diverse audiences of any current stand up. His show 'Live Innit' covers a range of issues from class, race and good old Brexit, to Tinder and being mistaken as a terrorist. He manages to cover serious issues such as depression, but as many great comedians puts light and an angle of comedy on the darkness of the subject. 'Live Innit' is a highly anticipated stand-up show, which will be coming to venues nationwide.
Britains favourite Scouse John Bishop is bringing his Winging It tour to Brighton this autumn. Having been out the touring game for three years now, Bishop is gearing up for this tour to be his biggest and best yet, as he highly anticipates the adventure being back on the road again will bring. The name of the tour ironically came from John's frustration of having to think up a tour name, so Winging It was exactly what he was doing! His career has been a success having plenty of his own shows providing comedy, entertainment and documentary and has been praised for the work he has done for charity including raising £4.2 million for Sports Relief. If seeing John on one of his many chat shows just isn't giving you your comedy fill, then get down to the Brighton Centre, but book quick as the tour is selling out fast!
This outgoing lady is all about female empowerment, including her joke on the 'Thigh Gap' which went viral with over 40 million views, her witty jokes are owned by her sassy personality. ROBIN DRISCOLL
We chat with the Mr Bean and Rough Music Author
From the misadventures of the quintessentially awkward, Reliant Robin-hating, Englishman, to a chancer on the run with stolen mob money, Robin Driscoll places larger-than-life characters in extraordinary situations. Now, after writing scripts for global sensation Mr Bean since the 90s, he’s now created his first novel. In Rough Music he brings together corporate culture, a Russian hit-man, and a diverse array of locations, in a glorious and witty romp. “I know people would expect me to have written a funny book,” he tells me. “I ended up finding it easier to write what I like to read, which is history thrillers, crime and espionage. But I couldn’t help but get some comedy into it.” His new character, Rab MacBain, has stolen money from a group of powerful gangsters. In return, they’ve dispatched a hitman to unleash retribution. Seeking sanctuary, MacBain heads for his childhood home, but trouble is close behind. Relishing the new challenge of creating a full novel, Driscoll sent his first few chapters to a friend - who in turn helpfully suggested the established script-writer couldn’t write. “I was quite indignant. I know story structure and I know how to develop characters. In ten minutes, he’d pointed out how different script writing was from writing prose.” Taking a fresh approach, he grew to appreciate the finer points of literary narrative and how to enable a deeper insight into his characters motives and ambitions. The main point he learnt, regardless of whether a story’s protagonist starts as hero or anti-hero, they need to undergo a form of change. “Personally, I prefer the anti-hero. The Cary Grants - those sort of characters.... The definition of anti-hero is a hero with no heroic qualities.” He offers that a plot details what happens, where as a story follows a character as they progress through those circumstances. “It’s how they change and how their emotions are affected. The decisions they make and how they get over wrong decisions, that is the story.”
Growing up in Sompting, Driscoll has called Sussex ‘home’ for most of his life. “Whenever I was on tour, I’d always feel uncomfortable about being away from the Downs.” He’s justifiably proud of his past achievements, but not afraid to be gently self-effacing about his career. At school, he was labelled a remedial student - his love of wordplay and storytelling coming a little later in life. “They used to call us slow learners. It was much later, when I left school, that I started reading and enjoying stories.” He went on to cofound Cliffhanger Theatre Company, touring the country for 15 years. The experience he gained led to a writing jobs, including work on hit BBC sketch show Alas Smith and Jones. A long association with Mr Bean started after he heard it had been fully commissioned and sent in some ideas. “I was called to a meeting and they said: ‘Robin, you seem to be the only one who gets this.’” Since its original broadcast in 1990, the show has become one of Britain’s most recognisable cultural exports – rubbing shoulders with the Windsor family, Adele and, err… Benny Hill. An amalgam of Chaplin, French mime and Rowan Atkinson’s pre-teen self, Bean’s exploits have been seen in over 200 countries and spawned two hit films, an animated series and an appearance at the 2012 Olympic games opening ceremony. Not bad for a mumbling accident-prone, introvert. The global success of the character is undoubtedly due to its minimal dialogue and almost universal appeal. “If you read a comedy script you can laugh. But if I showed you a Mr Bean script it’d be dull as dishwater. It’s down to Rowan’s comic performance and the way he translates physically what you write. It’s basically like writing a manual.” So where does Bean’s difficult relationship with the iconic three wheeled Reliant Robin come from? The source of the show’s long destructive attitude towards the car stretches back to the pilot episode. Driscoll had seen the 70’s wobble wagon mocked and decided to keep running with the gag
“I just went along with that He has another book going into production soon, idea. Whenever I could, which has required another round of fact-finding I’d come up with a and planning. A clod ensemple production By lottie woodrow Theatre, dance, music and everything in-between are immersed into one multi-disciplinary performance, ‘Under Glass’ by Clod Ensemble. Directed by Suzy Wilson and composed by Paul Clark, following its 2009 debut at Sadler’s Well and 2009 winner of Total Theatre Award for Physical and Visual Theatre, ‘Under Glass’ comes to the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts this November. With the performance bringing a crossover of a museum exhibition and a medical laboratory, we grabbed the chance to talk to composer Paul Clark about the upcoming performance. What begun as Paul describes as a one-off performance in 1995, Clod Ensemble soon began to produce more and more theatre and compositional performances, often revisiting old performances, tweaking and adapting them to become newer and more vibrant, for now 22 years. In the world of theatre, dance and music, I asked how Clod Ensemble came into play. Paul explains it started with a Pushkin short play which subverted the stereotypes of traditional theatre, with a large cast and live band on stage. Following this, Clod Ensemble’s performances continually subvert what Paul describes as typical theatre with musicians on stage and the score of the composition being different to mass theatre scores. It usually becomes closer to dance and opera, with Paul saying, each performance carried on from there, emerging new techniques to theatre performances. With every performance show being varyingly different, I asked how each comes into action, becoming a showcasing production. Paul laughingly replied, “It depends on the piece,” regarding whether the performance or the composition comes first. For ‘Under Glass’, it was more back and forth between himself and director, Suzy. She came to him with her ideas and Paul would come back to her with different scores and pieces for the music. This was a continual cycle until the final rehearsals where only a few tweaks were needed before the big performance. Paul describes the overall inspiration and theme of ‘Under Glass’ as how we see each other and how we can be on display yet also be aware of it. “Performers are used to being looked at, you know, it’s what they’re used to doing but theres something about putting someone into a tiny space and shining a light on them,” Paul says. ‘Under Glass’ places a series of seven glass containers holding performers, allowing them to appear as specimens to be viewed at the audiences own pleasure, as Paul states, “It brings all those kind of themes together, you know, museum exhibits and specimen jars, into your mind as an audience member.”

UNDER GLASS
With the first performance of ‘Under Glass’ being showcased in 2009, I was intrigued in asking whether this month’s performance will be the same or different in any way, now 8 years later. Paul says every time they perform the show, it becomes different, and with ‘Under Glass’ it really depends on the venue and circumstances. “Each time is adapted to make it new. I’ve redone the score, not completely but just to tighten it up.” This time round, will see a similarity to the 2009 performance at Sadler Wells but with a different cast, and one whole new glass jar from scratch. There should also be a few talks and workshops happening around the dates they are in Brighton, as Paul tells me. So if this tickles your fancy, you should definitely have a look! Interestingly, the audience is allowed to walk wherever they like. “Although somewhat lead, nothing is stopping them from standing right next to a piece or right at the back to get a different perspective.” Immersing themselves into the performance to create varying opinions and reaction. It can evoke feelings of entrapment due to the restricted access for movement within the jars, or feelings of freedom that you get within limits - each feeling is down to the viewers own interpretation. That’s the beauty of it. Finally, I asked if there was anything to expect in the future from Clod Ensemble. Not to give too much away, Paul says they are working on two performances at the moment for 2018. They have worked on both of the performances before but are now reworking them. Each project Clod Ensemble works on is different, as “each project kind of has it’s own sort of life.” UNDER GLASS comes to the Attenborough Centre on Weds 1 Nov - Sat 4 Nov. ERICTHEFRED Wed 4 – Thurs 5 Oct The Old Market Chris Lynam's work is a mindful piece, which is sure to move audiences. Slightly eerie, yet thought provoking, it brings together a comical performer; a clown and a heap of captivating original music. When the enraged performer takes off his costume, with a view never to perform again, he triggers a new set of emotions and opportunities. His dreams now know no boundaries. He must remember, fall in love even and carry on with his life - or possibly end it all... Throughout the following chaos, life is anything but ordinary. However, as most performers know, the show (and the clown) must go on.
INTERCHANGEABLE BODIES
Thurs 5 Oct The Marlborough Theatre Interchangeable Bodies aims to explore the issue of gender, what it means to us as individuals and where these understandings come from. This performance will take its audiences back to primary school, the place where most learn about gender and the labels and stereotypes which come with it. The writer intends for this work to tackle the subject’s status quo; something we all too easily accept. Questions will be asked and ideas explored, this is a place where there is no right or wrong, male or female.
ANTIGONE Fri 6 - Sat 14 Oct New Venture Theatre Based on themes from an ancient Greek play by Sophocles, Antigone has lived on in many shapes and forms. In this tragedy, civil war has destroyed the city of Thebes and torn apart Oedipus’ troubled family. The rebellious Antigone defies Kreon, the new ruler of Thebes who is concerned with keeping his government strong and stable. Is Antigone a criminal or just a voice of reason? Is Kreon a heartless dictator or just a man balancing the needs of state and family? Anne Carson’s colloquial translation of this classic brings the themes of the story, personal and political, into a present where it seems so relevant.

This is a new performance inspired by the historical events before the Spanish Civil War, exploring Spain's 30s communist and anarchist coalition government. It’s a curious expression of the unravelling during the revolution, and the bold ideals that came with it. A past that included the likes of libertarian socialism, state power elimination and community. Increasingly relevant as Spain is again divided and the world faces tensions between austerity, Europe’s far right movements and those on the left. Told by a flamenco dancer, a punk guitarist and a stripper, it demands we break the Pact of Forgetting.
THE HARTLEPOOL MONKEY
TRUMP DEPRESSION HOTLINE TOUR Tues 24 Oct The Marlborough Theatre
Fri 27 Oct Connaught Theatre, Worthing
A play, sure to be one of many, based around the man who dominates the US politics. He’s angered many, not least the Church of Stop Shopping - a New York based secular political religion founded in 1999. These award-winning, anticonsumerist, Earth-loving activists are coming to the UK to spread their word.
Puppetry and tackling xenophobia are maybe not two things you’d generally put together, but the puppeteers who brought War Horse to life have made it happen. The Hartlepool Monkey tells the story of a shipwreck off the Yorkshire coast where only two survivors remain: the cabin girl and the ship’s mascot, a chimpanzee in a military uniform.
They are concerned with the likes of global advertising, multinational control, climate change and supermarket domination, organising boycotts and protests while singing multiple harmonies. If the world’s problems are a concern, then this empowering play is for you and even more so if they don’t.
The locals are terrified of an invasion and unsure what a Frenchman looks like, and this results in the chimp being tried as a spy. Based on a 200 year old legend, this timeless production explores issues xenophobia and humanity's ability to overcome prejudice.

Positioned as Mario, the player must attempt to rescue the princess, travelling around different kingdoms, undergoing various tasks. The game features cooperative play, so why not throw it back to your childhood days with this new Super Mario game.

With their thoughtfully selected choices of food ranging from breakfast and sandwiches to tapas, owners Andy and Georgia believe the sourcing of products is an important component when it comes to their products. 1909
40
(26-27 East Street, Brighton, BN1 1HL)
This second floor restaurant is one you may initially have difficulty finding as it sits above South Coast Jewellers, Pressleys. Combining retail with dining, 1909 is overseen by well- known head chef Jake Northcote-Green who has been the behind the scenes man at some of Brighton's favourite restaurants such as Plateau, Yum Yum Ninja and Guerilla Grill. Despite the classy marble tables and gold hued walls of the former show room, Northcote-Green said he didn't want the restaurant to be expensive as people may expect from somewhere above a prestigious jewellery shop. (Read our review on page 42)
PETIT POIS
(70 Ship Street, Brighton, BN1 1AE)
We are all too familiar with Spanish tapas, but how many times in your life have you had French tapas? Petit Pois has brought this fresh take on some of the nations favourite cuisine, with a intricate selection of little French dishes, from Scallops with butternut squash and hazelnut butter to a selection of cheeses and chutneys and of course frog leg goujons! This carefully selected menu by husband and wife David and Ivana takes French classics with a mouthwatering modern twist. This is a great place to go with friends, whether you want to share complementing dishes, or have a small selection for yourself and enjoy the selection of French wines, not to mention it is less than two minutes from the iconic seafront if you fancy yourself an after dinner stroll.
SEMOLINA
(15 Baker Street, Brighton, BN1 4JNP)
Located on Baker Street, just off London Road, this friendly neighbourhood cafe Bistro offers something slightly away from the busy town centre. Semolina is a cosy and relaxed restaurant that offers delicious home-cooked food. As well as the ever changing menu being made with a passion for food and a focus on great ingredients, the owners make sure that all their products are sourced from Sussex suppliers. With the London Road market and ethical supermarket HISBE close by, Semolina ensures customers can join in on this taste for organic Sussex. Everything is made on site from scratch and the Bistro has received wide recognition from Brighton's food and drink community, putting it in the Brighton's Best Top 20 for two years running. With guaranteed lovely food and a morally uplifting day or evening out, what more could you want from your local cafe?
MURMUR (91-96 Kings Road Arches, Brighton, BN1 2LN)
Brighton seafront has a lot to offer; beautiful views, lively clubs, quaint individual shops and the newly built i360, however, it may be safe to say the abundance of fish and chips and ice cream doesn't make it the most appealing spot to eat. One of Brighton's most famous chefs Michael Bremner agrees with this and is now heading new restaurant Mumur, which he promises will deliver healthy and honest food, which is great for all the family. The name derives from the name given to a flock of starlings: a Mumuration, which in this scenic location by the historic West Pier, is a regular sight for viewers to enjoy. This suave restaurant will be serving local, fresh food and is sure to add a popular component to the regeneration project of Brighton's Victorian arches.

1909 Review by Lucy Hallett
I quite like it when things are not as they appear at first glance. I’ve often read in wonder about those innocuous doors that look like they house nothing more than a closet, only for some lucky person to open them and be led down a labyrinthine corridor to a spectacular bar. Many of us will be familiar with the beautiful jewellers Pressleys on East Street, however what you may not know is that since August 1st there has been a sensational restaurant, 1909, above the jewellers and accessible via a bell. So on a warm September Friday evening we rang the bell with a sense of eager anticipation and were greeted by Head Chef Jake whose formidable experience includes one of my personal favourite restaurants - Plateau. He enthusiastically ushered us upstairs to what can only be described as a culinary Narnia. The restaurant itself is really quite beautiful and very in keeping with the minimalist and sleek style of the jewellers. The open plan kitchen/bar area is swathed in marble and encircled by wooden floorboards and tables for those not wanting to be so close to the action. We seated ourselves at the beautiful marble counter tops which allowed us the perfect view of the food preparation and serving. Taking its name from the year that Pressleys opened, Jake explained that although 1909 may seem like a very different concept to us, other countries already amalgamate retail and cuisine to great success.

Underpinning the ethos of the restaurant is a passionate belief that everything is locally sourced, organic and the very best quality that money can buy and he states proudly that all the wines are low intervention meaning additives and sulphites are kept to a minimum. The intoxicatingly lovely smells that were mere inches from us meant that we
were all rather eager to sample some of the small plates that are changed on a weekly basis and range in price from £2 to £8. We started with The Morbier and Ham Croquette (£2) which was quite simply one of the nicest and most brilliantly unctuous things I have ever eaten. Sensing that this must be a favourite with diners Jake told us that one table ordered a croquette with every single small plate. Jake was keen to emphasise though that even if someone wished to come in and eat a couple of croquettes and drink a glass of wine they would be just as welcome as a table ordering a feast of plates. Next was the Marinated Squid, Dill and Caper (£6). The squid had been left in its uncooked, juicy state while the capers and tomato provided an exceptional level of freshness. Feeling thirsty and desperate to try one of the wines, Jake gave insightful and knowledgeable comments for every one of the small but well-chosen list which helped me choose a Grenache called 'Amanda' (£6.75). It had the appearance of a rosé and was light, elegant and incredibly delicate. Next was the Salted Pork, PX and Gem Lettuce (£7) and the Nasu Aubergine, Raw Honey and Parsley (£5). The salted pork gave off the most delectable smell and its strong smokiness was perfectly partnered by the crunchy and light gem lettuce. The Nasu aubergine was cooked wonderfully and I can't remember a time whereby I have had honey served in a savoury dish with such success. Following this was Fried Potato, Zhoug and Lardo (£6). The zhoug which is a spicy but fresh paste of chillies, coriander and lime added an excellent dimension to the lardo, a cured fat salumi, and both worked well with the earthy taste of potato.
eastern eye TH SOU INDIAN CUISINE
The following Wild Mallard and White Polenta (£7) was show-stoppingly fabulous. The mallard being presented spherically with a rich meaty jus and creamy flavoursome polenta. I'm often a cheeseor-dessert person, but as the quality and freshness of everything had been so exceptional we went for both. The Robiola (£4) and the Tête de Moine (£4), one soft cheese one hard were of the highest quality and the Apple Caramel (£5) was accompanied with a fantastic story whereby the recipe had been missing for hundred of years and only recently found: all I can say is that I'm glad it was. 1909 is one of the most accomplished and exciting restaurants that I have frequented and Jake's frankly staggering knowledge of food and drink make it an unforgettable dining experience. You don't need a crystal ball to know that it will be a remarkable success. 1909 Brighton 26-27 East St, Brighton, BN1 1HL www.1909brighton.co.uk

TRAVEL
TRAVELLING THE WORLD WITH ANNA MCNUFF Wanderlust is something the majority of us find ourselves getting, especially as the Winter approaches and there seems to be nothing more appealing than... well anywhere but the U.K.
Anna McNuff, who has been named one of the top female explorers by The Guardian and Conde Nast's 50 best traveller's of our time, is coming to Brighton to cover a range of topics about travelling. Whether this be some of her fantastic stories from each corner of the planet, the importance of dreaming big or overcoming a fear of failure, this talk will be one to inspire you. Responsible Travel, based in the North Laines, will be holding this event, an agency that understands a love of travel and a curiosity for new cultures. At Responsible Travel, they can help with any travel related obstacles you need overcoming, as well as listening to your wants and desires to plan the perfect trip away, for you. Anna McNuff is an inspirational woman; international athlete turned adventurer who has experienced some extraordinary adventures after retiring from being a rowing athlete in her mid- 20's. She describes one of her most memorable times being waking up 100 metres from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and watching the sun rise. This ambitious woman has also cycled 5,500 miles through The Andes, run the length of New Zealand and cycled through all 50 States of the U.S.A visiting locals schools and communities where she could. Sailing down the coast of Belize is just another trip to make us all envious, but despite seeming like she's done it all, she still has loads more in sight for the future. She speaks of walking through Israel, kayaking around the Caribbean and a swim around the Greek Islands. It's not just about where she's been and how many countries she can add to the list, but all these escapades can be good for, and why it can be so liberating. Anna speaks about her 'pants of perspective' she will put on during rough times abroad, and she remembers that this is all part of travelling to new, foreign places and realising how lucky she is to travel. “Take a reality check on what is actually happening vs. what you’re brain is telling you could happen, and that's where you find the strength to kick some serious ass”. Travelling the globe has also opened up opportunities to meet new people of different nationalities and can be used as a tool for personal development. There are many emotions we have to deal with: fear, self-doubt, vulnerability, Anna explains, but they are all there for a good reason and by stepping out of your comfort zone we can become far stronger than we ever imagined. Anna McNuff will be coming to Responsible Travel, Bond Street, Brighton on October 17th at 6:30pm.
TRAVEL TIPS By becky Waldron
Summer may be coming to a close, but no doubt the winter season will have many of us jetting across the globe for Christmas or to get away from the miserable British weather. We've compiled a few handy tips to bear in mind as you venture out into the big wide world. Bring a book This can be a book you're already reading or a chance to get reading one you've always wanted to read. Something good to read will always come in handy when relaxing on the beach, or distracting yourself from a hellish flight. Avoid certain foods Meat can always be a game of Russian roulette when in some foreign countries, unless you want to risk an evening on the loo, steer clear of dodgy meat. Packaging containing a language you can't read is also one to watch out for, and not just for vegans or gluten free folk, but for allergies. Bring a camera You'll want to get all the scenic shots you can, even if its just of a cafe you really liked. Don't worry if you hate your hair, you won't regret documenting the holiday (but maybe the haircut). Restrict mobile phone usage A camera will help with that. It may come as a surprise but being with a companion who is glued to their phone makes for rubbish company. Also, there's no point missing what the world has to offer because of social media. Do your research You don't have to do hours of studying, but learn a bit about the culture of the place you're going to. Other countries may have different perceptions of what they view as polite or rude, which can be an easy was of getting on the wrong side of the locals. Try new things Make the most of your adventure: go paragliding, eat something you wouldn't usually eat, check out the unusual animals that don't live in your country. Bring a jacket... and sunscreen Prepare for both extremes, these are both lightweight and will (hopefully) stop you burning or freezing. Be careful crossing the road Yes, you have probably known this one since you were old enough to walk, but the roads can be very different abroad. Vehicles may drive on the other side, or in somewhere like Amsterdam, you might just get run over by a cyclist. Bring more cash than planned It's very rare that the “Screw it I'm on holiday attitude hasn't left some of us a little bit out of pocket. A bit of extra money can help take the stress off and give you the chance to enjoy all the holiday activities and goodies your country of choice has to offer. Smile! and be considerate Be considerate to everyone you meet abroad, especially those who are native to the country. Cultures can clash sometimes, especially with those without an open mind, and don't forget to smile, it always goes a long way.
