OUTBREAK

Dance craze puts Brighton on the Charleston map

The ultimate immersive physical horror experience this October

In 2010, France’s Montpellier Swing Jammerz challenged the dancers from across the globe to make a short film. Featuring local people dancing the Charleston in front of iconic locations in their communities, the films are being shared online for the world to see.

The nights are drawing in and Halloween is fast approaching, so our thoughts are inevitably turning to the terrors dwelling in the dark. Now, not too far away, there’s something very sinister and very real awaiting us in the shadows.

Over the past eight months, local dance group I Charleston Brighton has been working with over 80 dancers, ranging from 5 to 80 year-olds, to put Brighton on the Charleston map. I Charleston Brighton has also collaborated with a wide range of different groups including JP Omari- Director of Streetfunk, Live Life Hoop, Bitter and Twisted Burlesque, Acro Yoga and Gypsy Disco Fire Brigade. Brighton has also upped the ante, by making their short film a story out about ‘couple’s days out’ in the city. Footage locations include Brighton Seafront, the Laines, the Wheel, Hove Lawns, Brunswick and Palmeria Square, Hanover, the Duke of York’s, the Level and the West Pier, along with a grand finale scene with 60 people dancing the Charleston in front of the Royal Pavilion. The film will be released on Fri 5 Sept. In the meantime, you can visit www.icharlestontheworld.com to see how the Charleston craze is again taking the world by storm.

Outbreak Brighton is a new attraction hidden in the depths of the Sussex countryside. It promises an extreme, immersive, physical horror experience for anyone brave enough to enter its world. Described as Secret Cinema meets 28 Days Later, crossed with Tough Mudder all in one place, it’s the ultimate destination for anyone who wants their deepest darkest fears burst into life. Open to any adult who can run, crawl or climb and is able to cope with reduced lighting and willing to get muddy or wet. This certainly isn’t for anyone of a nervous disposition. Participants are picked up by military escort, from a secret location in central Brighton, to be taken deep into the South Downs, and left completely outside of their comfort zone. This fear-filled production is the first of its kind in the UK. Outbreak Brighton’s simple aim is to absolutely terrify each participant, as they all struggle to comprehend the ghastliness of their situation. Although the experience is physically demanding, it’s more an occult course than assault course. Expect to be crawling, climbing and escaping through tunnels, in this nightmare of a lifetime. The question is… Are you brave enough to brave the terror of Outbreak Brighton? www.outbreakbrighton.com

HONEYBLOOD There’s hive of activity around this Scottish duo

Releasing covers of little-known American indie bands, recording in bathrooms, issuing singles on cassette and home-producing their merchandise - these are all signs that Honeyblood have an inimitable work ethic running through their veins. Whilst this pair might not be intentionally establishing DIY credentials, they are prepared to use every means at their disposal to get the job done. With Stina Tweeddale covering guitar and Shona McVicar on drums, their combined vocals swoon, chime and entwine over a self-assured blast of lo-fi charm. Now they’re riding the wave of enthusiasm generated by their eponymous debut album. “You can’t really tell what the reaction will be like,” Tweeddale confides, early one morning. “Reading reviews is a really strange thing to do, when you’ve been working on something for ages.” They’ve forged an album, with producer Peter Katis (The National, Interpol) that’s 100% girl-powered. But not in the simpering catch-phrase touting manner of certain other allfemale pop acts. These songs are reflective, assertive and confident. Offering a more complex range of feelings than simply loneliness, arousal or betrayal, these two are not begging you for recognition… They’re telling you how it’s going to be.

By Stuart Rolt

Raised in Edinburgh, Tweeddale moved to Glasgow when she was 17. Ultimately this was for university, but the relocation was greatly encouraged by the city’s thriving music scene. Whilst the Scottish capital provides ample live music, it offers few venues offering new and inspiring live acts every night. There’s an obvious Glaswegian influence in Honeyblood’s music. As a city, its relative isolation from the rest of the UK’s music scene enables more organic music aesthetics. Glaswegians have a long demonstrated love of melodic, fuzzy guitar pop and Honeyblood fit snugly amongst the range of great bands this area has produced. Listen hard enough and you’ll discover shades of pre-ecstasy Primal Scream, BMX Bandits, The Vaselines and nearly all of the C-86 movement in the duo’s music. Those bands had simple setups and wrote hope-filled songs about love, life and friendship. “When I became a musician it was something I learned about. That movement did really just appear from Glasgow and was quite an insular thing.” Now the city is musically on the rise again. Bands like Chvrches, The Amazing Snakeheads and Baby Strange are recognised for producing incredible music, something that thrills Tweeddale. “It’s great, especially when we are so far away from London, that we can still be noticed.”

BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 11 ]

It’s a massive irony that Honeyblood are now signed to the Brighton-based Fat Cat Records. This might be to do with founder Alex Knight’s noticeable love affair with Scottish music; The Twilight Sad, Frightened Rabbit, We Were Promised Jetpacks and PAWS already part of his roster. The relationship with Fat Cat came about when Knight attended a Scottish music showcase, which featured Honeyblood as the first act on. Only their second gig ever, it impressed Knight enough to purchase the full range of DIY merchandise the band had to offer. Tweeddale later approached him, to be told her band was good, but needed to play more shows. “I didn’t think anything else of it. But he’d seen something.” That was two years ago. This summer saw them release that debut and the momentum behind the act is growing. It retains plenty of nods to their lo-fi roots, indeed the arrangements still revolve around a staggeringly simple set-up, but they manage to go beyond the sum of their parts. Beneath the fuzz, there’s a well-developed and fiery approach to the straight-forward pop song. But with more lyrical depth comes wilder interpretations of song meanings. “It’s really weird that some people think Bud is a love song. We always say it’s about me and Shona’s friendship,” Tweeddale laughs. From the raucous to the sweet, its 12 gracefully-produced tracks range from the spikey to the earnest, with momentary flashes of heartmelting harmonies.

The two piece rock act is currently very much in vogue. CY Bands like The White Stripes, The Black Keys, Brighton’s CMY own Royal Blood and Sleigh Bells have all proved you can K still make plenty of noise with only a couple of people. The lure of the rock duo for musicians might be down to the sheer raw power it can generate, although it might as easily be down to convenience, as most double acts find it quick to sound-check and easy to set up. “From a logistics point of view, it’s so much easier to tour with just two people’s kit.”

28 October Clean Bandit Tickets: £15

But Tweeddale says Honeyblood might not be a fixed unit forever, so the band could evolve away from their lo-fi indie aesthetic - “The possibilities are endless, especially as we’ve started with the bare minimum.” It also turns out McVicar is adept at playing drums and keyboards simultaneously, but this skill is getting held back until the next album. It’s a sign of this pair’s ambition that they’re even thinking of the next album, only two months since their debut. With each success comes an increased demand for the pair, ensuring they are getting plenty of live shows under their belt. After this month’s UK tour, they’re off around Europe with the possibility of another US tour before Christmas. Their workload may be huge, but they love it all. “It’s pretty intense, but it’s great! We’ve wanted to do it for so long that we really appreciate it.” Honeyblood play The Hope, Sat 27 Sept 2014

ALT-J Interview with Thom Green - What’s “Normal” anyway?

Once a relatively anonymous band, Alt-J were happy to let their music represent them. That is until the sweeping majesty of their debut album, An Awesome Wave, was acknowledged by the 2012 Mercury Prize. Almost overnight the music media of the English-speaking world was taking interest in the band. It seems selling a million copies of an album filled with profoundly alternative electronic folk music, didn’t offer a comprehension of what inspired and drove this band. There were more questions to be asked of these four young men, but no-one considered if they really wanted to hear, or understand, the answers. Whilst all of the music media clamouring to speak with them can only be considered a good thing, it’s taken a while for the band to fully appreciate it’s simply part of their job. “It’s hard talking about what we do all the time,” drummer Thom Green tells me. “But we’ve got a method for it now, so it kind of makes sense.” This kind of press attention can be challenging, even for individuals actively seeking the limelight. So it must increase exponentially for musicians that never expected to be faced by the demands of a rigorous PR circuit. A while ago, a promo

By Stuart Rolt

session in Europe saw the band conducting a gruelling three days of face to face interviews with journalists, each of them asking the same set of questions. “I became so detached from myself. I was talking about music in the past tense… It was that long. I could even see the next question coming. It was just weird.” It’s perhaps been an uneasy relationship with the press, particularly when some quarters, unimpressed by their collective enigmatic disposition, started labelling the band as “boring” and “bland”. For a short time, even the word “normal” was bizarrely wielded as an insult. Whilst they now accept the pressure is just an unavoidable aspect of the world they’ve entered, Alt-J also had to fulfil the massive expectations for their second release without guitarist Gwil Sainsbury. It seems Sainsbury simply decided the life of a constantly touring musician wasn’t the perfect life choice. Inevitably the loss of a member, who was such a driving musical force, raises questions of how a band can write in the same way again. This and constant touring could easily have seen them lose touch of what they had before. To cope, Alt-J ensured recording conditions for the album were very similar to before, away from distractions, homely and available at any time. Written in two weeks and recorded in another two, the whole

BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 13 ]

process was actually very natural and organic. They seem to have learnt from their debut that you can’t force a perfect tune, it has to be allowed to develop on its own. This second LP, This Is All Yours, still contains many consistent Alt-J themes; odd narratives offering little insight to the writer’s internal dialogue, unhurried thoughtful arrangements and understated percussive elements. It does sound instantly more ambitious than previous work though, utilising more programming across its tracks. Green has been learning how to fully utilise Ableton, a powerful piece of music production software, whilst on tour. This was partly to facilitate remixing for other artists, but its tools have been increasingly applied to Alt-J work.

at I’m glad th “I love it. that something I’ve found re’s ive. If the it tu in so is ca n want to do I something I do it!”

This remixing work led to the band including a typically contraire sample on the album’s first single, Hunger For the Pine, whilst producing alternative mixes for long-time Alt-J fan Miley Cyrus’ 4x4 single. Thom started messing with her vocals, layering an element over one of his own tracks, turning that into one of the most haunting tracks of the summer. Cyrus is just one of a growing legion of US fans. Alt-J are more successful than most across the pond, clocking up a huge amount of pre-sales for the new release already, as well as standing on the verge of selling out their impending American tour and booking an even larger tour over there for 2015. Over here they’re only conducting a short tour to support the new album, but the coming months won’t provide much rest time for the band. Australia, off to America, then more Australian shows and returning for a full-on UK tour in January all await them. Then they’ll be staring the festival circuit in the face. It appears every day is now spent doing something on their current campaign. There are endless interviews, press shots and more press shots. One advantage of their success is now they can request photographers they know to share their artistic vision. “It’s like having a child. We want to make sure that it’s perfect.” So now the tremendous pressure facing the band is easing. The album is ready to be unleashed; they’re getting used to operating as a three piece and have discovered they can sell out Alexandra Palace in less than 10 minutes. If anything they’re becoming quietly confident, as reactions to previews from This Is All Yours have been amazing. “It’s an album I love. It makes sense as a whole piece of work. Now I’m more excited than anything.” Alt-J play The Brighton Centre on Tue 23 Sept 2014 ‘This Is All Yours’ is out in the UK on Mon 22 Sept 2014

HAR MAR SUPERSTAR Sat 13 Sept The Haunt

Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar

A support slot with Sohn for the Bath-based singer/songwriter, but expect her to move on to bigger things very soon. Her sensitive lyrics and very distinctive vocals have been making quite a stir on the West Country music scene, leading a session for BBC Introducing.

Har Mar Superstar’s Bye Bye 17 album saw a departure from his previous work. Now he offers us a soulful glimpse into a world of hedonism and heartache. He’s now poised (finally) to break free from the underground club scene, after many years of wild shows and after-hours adventures with strangers.

Now she’s on a mission to win hearts and minds everywhere, with her emotionally sound and hard-hitting presence. There may be themes of trouble and worry throughout her music, but there should a bright future ahead of her.

Known widely for his flamboyant antics and overly sexualized lyrics, it’s taken a while for people to accept that Har Mar Superstar isn’t a joke. But the new album, with its theme of finding love in despairing, hilarious and sometimes weird ways, has put that to bed.

THE JIM JONES REVUE

GLASS ANIMALS

Tue 30 Sept

2 Oct

Accomplished and mesmerising, Morris has been performing breath-taking shows across the nation recently. After thrilling a packed house at TGE2014, she’s set to be one of this year’s biggest breakthrough acts.

The Haunt These titans of UK Metal are nearing completion of their sixth studio album entitled ‘Maximum Overload’. Still dividing opinion among the rock fraternity, the band is relentlessly upbeat and tuneful.

Mon 13 Oct The Old Market

This is the last call for The Jim Jones Revue! October sees a cessation of all activity for this classic act. For seven raucous years they’ve blown apart venues around the world and reinvented the rock ‘n’ roll wheel with three incredible albums.

The Haunt This four-piece from Oxfordshire will be flag-bearers for British indie very soon. Debut album Zaba, is packed full of joyful conflictions and oddity, yet its experimental quirky pop just… works.

They certainly cram a great deal into their songs. Raging aggression, sublime guitar solos and choruses that resonate with the joy of some undisclosed triumph, all meld into a sound that can only be described as EPIC. Perhaps they are a little cartoon-like and pop-y, but they are a beacon amongst a scene that takes itself too seriously.

Possibly the most boisterous garage rock band the UK will ever produce, it’s a sad moment for music fans. Who will fulfil our need for ludicrous song titles and guitars acting as penile substitutes? Real rock and roll edges closer to extinction. Jim Jones, we salute you, and your revue.

These four school friends are busy bringing intelligent, inventive and witty music to a scene that is only now working out where to pigeonhole them. Is it Britpop, or is it old school R&B? The truth is probably both; they are simply taking a unique path to pop greatness. But after you’ve heard them, you’ll know it’s the right way to go.

The first US act to sign to legendary label 4AD, Throwing Muses spearheaded a new wave of American alternative rock. Their first release in a decade, Purgatory/Paradise, is both book and album. A lush collection of new songs, essays, artwork and lyrics, it creates an impression of the Muses’ distinctive world.

Famy’s debut album We Fam Econo, is an inventive, exciting collection of leftfield guitar songs, which emotes gloriously from the forlorn to the euphoric. Inspired by the bands shared experiences of growing up in the South of France, the albums tracks all get swathed in melody and capped by Bruce Yates’ wild, off-kilter vocals.

Founder member Tanya Donelly has returned to the band, but for how long? They might be older, quieter and less angry than in the 90s, but they still have that mercurial repertoire of songs blending beauty and tension.

Gaining a reputation for some slightly unhinged live shows, there’s a sense of mystic and wonder engulfing Famy. Blisteringly exciting, you have to wonder where this folkrock outfit might end up.

The Northampton outfit offer well-crafted songs and infectious rhythms, steeped in love and destruction, peace and paranoia. Excelling at honest contemporize lyrics, The Moons couple exquisite arrangements with glorious production. Expect classic pop melodies, brimming with tight harmonies and layered guitars. Don’t expect twerking, crass lyrics or childish pop melodies.

Are they a teen-teasing boy band, or gritty indie-kids obsessed by grunge and hip-hop? The jury is still out, but shifting 2 million copies of their single Sweater Weather marks them as quickly becoming massive. Debut album I Love You, is a slick, well produced and appealing affair. Helpfully offering an authoritative voice on everything you wondered about California, betrayal, lust and sex, it swaggers between being profound and silly. Angst dripping lyrics marry off with brooding melodies and arrangements that would make Phil Spector weep with envy. Are they the real deal though? Judge for yourself… www.concorde2.co.uk

With debut single Right Here entering the UK charts at number 6, a sold out debut headline gig in Hoxton, several show-stopping festival appearances and number one singles with Clean Bandit and Route 94, 2014 has been amazing for Brighton’s Jess Glynne.

The Pop Group, the most wildly innovative band to emerge from the late 70s post-punk era, have announced their first ever UK tour. This all coincides with the first run of re-issues on the new Freaks Are Us label.

Now venturing out on her first UK tour, it’s perfect timing for anyone desperate to hear her forthcoming debut album. Occupying the spot where hip-hop, soul, house and R ‘n’ B collide, time will tell if she lives up to her massive potential. But right now she’s making all the right moves.

Since their reunion in 2010, they’ve played a handful of key festivals around the world including a rapturously received show in Glasgow earlier this year. A roller-coaster blend of angry lyrics, funk, jazz and dub reggae rhythms with a vitality that puts modern bands to shame.

Brighton Digital Festival 2014 Welcome to the Digital Age!

1-28 September

This September, Brighton Digital Festival, a month long celebration of digital culture, returns to the city. An incredible series of over 120 art installations, digital workshops, inspirational conferences, dance shows and interactive entertainment spectaculars have been lined up. Here are just a few of the events we are most excited about. Music and Entertainment

Arts and Performance

Local award-winning digital artist Seb Lee-Delisle is installing another outdoor spectacle following the success of PixelPyros in 2012 and 2013. Head to the Unitarian Church to become a skilled musician using custom-made touch-activated Laser Light Synths packed full of LED lights. The sounds played trigger a massive laser light show all over the façade of the Unitarian Church (pictured above).

An alarming statement on the filters that exist between world events and the public comes to Lighthouse from 4-28 September in the form of a small wireless router. Newstweek, created by Julian Oliver and Danja Vasiliev, provides doctored articles when members of the public use their free Wi-Fi point to browse popular news sites.

Bring Your Own Beamer is one of the Festival’s simplest pitches: find a space, invite artists and ask them to bring a projector. Roam around the Dome on Sat 20 Sept either as an artist exploring projection and collaboration or as an observer exploring the video installations being created ad-hoc throughout the night. Collaboration is a key element of the Festival this year, especially with THE ACID bringing their soulful music to The Haunt on 11 September. They’re joined by show designer Giani Fabricio and media art collective CHROMA for live interactive projection, mixing content from artful scientists. Of the many comedy events on offer, McNeil and Pamphilon Go 8-Bit! seem to have found the geekiest combination. They’re presenting sketches, stand up and competitive video gaming (with forfeits for the losing teams) at Caroline of Brunswick on 11 September. Loop.Coop will be taking over The FuseBox at New England House on Sat 27 Sept, transforming it into a cutting-edge Aladdin’s cave of digital delights. It’s to celebrate the launch of Looptopia, an app where you can sculpt music visually, jam with 1000s of users and immerse yourself in an otherworldly musical experience. Attendees will get the chance to see their creations come to life, as Looptopia is projected live within the space. http://loop.coop

The Festival is also a great opportunity to be creative. GeoWriting, created by Richard Hearn of Paragraph Planet, gives writing prompts based on your location in the city. Over September, paths and stories will mix throughout the city creating a “jarring, storytelling mosaic”. Following a widely praised premiere at the Royal Opera House, The Measures Taken comes to The Old Market Fri 26 Sept. Alexander Whitley’s choreography both dominates and obeys the Marshmallow Laser Feast’s digital augmentations (projections and beams of light) to explore how dance and technology can work together, not just decorate each other. The New Sublime returns to Phoenix Brighton from 6-27 Sept, asking: “can art which uses digital technology move us in the same sustained way as other forms of contemporary art?” Curated again by the Fortunecats, this was a staple of last year’s Festival.

Just Fascinating The first Friday of every September is set aside for dConstruct, a one-day technology, culture and society conference. There are so many great conferences this year. With questions of surveillance, security and anonymity dominating digital culture at the moment, dConstruct’s theme - Living With The Network is sure to stand out.

Head to Sallis Benney Theatre on Thur 25 Sept to hear from speakers talking about their big ideas, brought to you by the Brighton chapter of SheSays, a global organisation empowering women in the digital and creative industries. Hear from: Caroline Lucas, MP for Brighton Pavilion; Katy Beale, the cofounder of London agency Caper, Coding for Kids and Culture Hack; Joan Farrer, the director of the Design Research initiative at University of Brighton and Rosa Fox of Codebar Brighton. Why not experience the current pinnacle of virtual reality technology in a frozen yoghurt warehouse? Persistent Peril and Paul Hayes are setting up Dark Ride, a Lego monorail adventure through perspex sculptures which can be viewed either in person or though an Oculus Rift headset. Launching 12 September at Lick’s warehouse (with free frozen yoghurt!), there will also be workshops on 13-14 looking at the various technologies used.

Family Fun Brighton Mini Maker Faire, an interactive mini-festival of creativity and invention has been a staple of the Brighton Digital Festival for a number of years already. 2014 will be no different, with antweight combat robots, 3D chocolate printing, live-action Pac Man and toy hacking all on offer. If that’s not enough, you can learn to solder, bind books, weave, felt, build robots and so many other things. A word of caution, watch out for roaming Daleks and members of the Star Wars Rebel Legion! BlockBuilders know that Minecraft can be more than just an endless blocky distraction. Having already used the game to help children voice their opinions on the nearby Lewes industrial estate urban redevelopment project, on 13, 20 and 27 Sept at Jubilee Library they turn their sights on London Road, offering workshops to engage the town planner and architect in all of us. Brighton Museum & Gallery are inviting a new generation of curators to Remix the Museum from 8-28 Sept. A series of workshops and sessions will help families to bring the Museum’s collections to life with animation, by creating their own exhibitions through the power of 3D printing and even exploring their own stories with the Brighton Youth Film Festival and Sheepfilms. This is only a fraction of the exciting creative digital events on offer throughout September. Check out the full line-up at www.brightondigitalfestival.co.uk.

is a wondrous place. Essentially pointless, accidentally glamorous and incidentally cultured, they say that when a person is bored of Brighton it’s because: A) they are a tedious git or B) they’ve run out of the folding stuff. I can help you with B, but A could be a little tricky. The real secret to getting the most out of Brighton is to mix and mingle, or that student groove all too quickly becomes a rut. It’s a small place really and most folk are from elsewhere too. Fatboy Slim even wrote a song called “You’re not from Brighton”. Brighton is easy and these tips will make it a little easier still. Get a Job- Yeah, that’s what I said. Brighton makes Moscow and Tokyo look cheap, you’ll need all the wedge you can get. Strike early, get in first, there are untold cool places to work and it’s a great way to meet the natives. Get pedalling - Our buses cost more per mile than the QE2, a bike is essential and sexy. Marlborough Theatre

Three gripping Agatha Christie radio thrillers come to Theatre Royal, presented by the Agatha Christie Theatre Company. Performed in the style of their original BBC Broadcasts, these three rare stories see Jenny Seagrove and Tom Conti lead the cast.

Exploring the possibilities, limits and contradictions of belief, Not a Séance centres around a woman’s uncanny power to connect with vegetables. Kate’s been developing this ability for the last ten years and is now ready to share publicly.

www.atgtickets.com

An epic telling of the entire of Mark’s Gospel, I Am Mark offers an alternative to the Globe Mysteries and Radio 4’s Readings series. Last performed at Leicester Square Theatre in London, this production received a hugely positive audience response. Using fresh and contemporary language and theatrical styles, the aim is to strip the Biblical text of its religious impositions and return the story to its original oral, socio-political narrative. Alongside baptisms, detainments and pronouncements, there should be plenty of teaching, healing, cleansing, misunderstood messages and cod in breadcrumbs for up to 5,000. www.drinkinbrighton.co.uk/marlborough

BUDDHISM: IS IT JUST FOR LOSERS

THE BOY WHO KICKED PIGS

THE HYPOCHONDRIAC

Fri 3 - Sat 4 Oct c

Tue 14– Wed 15 Oct

Mon 20 - Sat 25 Oct

In The Butter in a Lordly Dish, a lawyer meets a grisly end when a convicted case comes back. The Yellow Iris has Poirot attending a party held by a rich American, whose wife was killed at a similar event a year earlier. Personal Call sees a spouse grow concerned when her husband receives a disturbing phone call.

Marlborough Theatre This ‘postmodern Zen clown show’ returns for two nights only, after a sell-out run at the Brighton Fringe. Framed as a support group meeting for those who ‘think too much’, a self-confessed analysis junkie dramatically reconstructs a runaway train of thought, enroute to a mid-life epiphany. Encounters with ‘Non-Sense therapy’ seemingly cure the subject of his addiction, but lead to a new dependency on idiotic behaviour. Enlightenment is at hand as we delve into a surreal, and soul searching, examination of the conflict between rationality and religion. www.drinkinbrighton.co.uk/marlborough

Through her guides, particularly potatoes, she will offer guidance and inspiration from the earthy world of legumes. Here’s an opportunity to explore your own power of connection and learn about the theory and practice of vegetable divination. There will be a Q&A, music from the vegetable world and a chip communion. www.drinkinbrighton.co.uk/marlborough

The Old Market 13 year-old Robert Caligari is a nasty piece of work, but today is the day he gets his comeuppance. Today is the day he’s going to die. Theatre Company Kill the Beast bring their critically acclaimed adaptation of Tom Baker’s darkly comic story to Brighton, at last. This inventive, clever and hilarious production has been wowed, disgusting audiences up and down the nation. Promising beautiful projections, original music and over eight hats, it’s a gloriously grisly tale of one scoundrel’s attempt at infamy.

Theatre Royal Brighton Moliere’s medicinal masterpiece gets transformed into a riotous farce in this brand new production starring Tony Robinson. The penny pinching Argan is healthy, wealthy and completely obsessed by a list of imaginary ailments he believes himself to be suffering from. Confusion is piled upon hilarious confusion as a gang of eccentric quacks and his treacherous wife endeavour to fleece Argan of his fortune. Meanwhile his lovesick daughter, her dashing lover and an astute maid attempt to set him straight. www.atgtickets.com

Fri 3 - Sat 11 October

Dome Studio Theatre When the future starts looking black, what would you do? Do you travel the world, reconnect with your family or take up a new hobby? Iranian writer Nassim Soleimanpour confronts the slow loss of his sight and the fact that he’s never read Hamlet. With tragedy looming, he chooses instead to play with truth and fiction, chance and fate. A surprise-laden meditation on what it means to act and interact in a shrinking world, Blind Hamlet is theatre about choices in which the audience chooses.

New Venture Theatre

Oscar Wilde’s much loved and brilliantly witty masterpiece comes to Brighton with an allstar cast. Rosalind Ayres, Niall Buggy, Patrick Godfrey, Nigel Havers, Martin Jarvis, Christine Kavanagh, Cherie Lunghi and Siân Phillips all elegantly lampoon the hypocrisies of a Victorian society.

Michael Wall’s tragi-comic piece is based upon the true story of two young Englishmen facing the death penalty for drug trafficking. Set in Penang, Malaysia, the pair face serious consequences for their ill thought-out actions.

Two bachelors create different identities in order to pursue two eligible ladies. But the redoubtable Lady Bracknell and uptight Miss Prism stand in their way, in a plot that twists and fizzles with some of the finest dialogue ever brought to the theatre.

It’s a complex journey towards an uncertain destiny, packed with bewilderment and inadequacy in dealing with the experience. The pair’s reactions to this alien culture, their lawyer and gaoler, together with family member’s attempts to free them, only serve to make matters worse.

English Disco Lovers (EDL) Music takes you higher… Born from an aspiration to subvert the meaning of an acronym, there’s an organisation combatting extremism with peace, love and unity. They are the English Disco Lovers (EDL), and if you’re in England, like disco and want to live in a world riled by love, instead of fear, then you’re welcome to their party. Whilst the English Defence League attempt to veil racism and homophobia with supposedly legitimate political concerns, English Disco Lovers’ initial aim is simple and transparent. They use music as a medium to celebrate and strengthen communities. Started after a night round a campfire, a plan was hatched by then-student Alex Jones to take back the English Defence League‘s acronym. In the autumn of 2012, Jones and some friends launched their own EDL Facebook page, using the name English Disco Lovers. “The interesting thing was that Alex wasn’t particularly a big fan of Disco,” Sam Moffett tells me. “But after he met me, I decided to plough it into him.” I’m enjoying an afternoon drink with Moffett, one of the organisation’s core DJs and a driving force behind its disco themed events, to discover more about this unusual sociopolitical movement. Although now more cantered around the mantra of ‘don’t hate, gyrate!’, often countering the marches of right-wing extremists with impromptu disco parties along the routes, EDL had a simpler initial mission statement. The idea was, through careful use of search engine optimisation and online campaigning, to get their website to top Google results when searching for ‘EDL’. Thanks to intervention from an unknown hacker bringing down the English Defence League’s website, they achieved this aim briefly last summer. Although this is no longer the case, there are a growing number of people wanting to make a peaceful stand for equality and acceptance. But is the English Defence League unhappy with a bunch of brightly dressed partiers trying to pinch their acronym? “When you put on anything even the smallest way opinionated, there will be people that won’t like it,” Jones tells me over the phone. “That’s just the way of the world.” Jones says his relationship with disco has changed and matured, thanks in part to Moffett’s encouragement. “It only can do, when you’re seeing people blasting out tunes about love, at a bunch

of people chanting behind a police line.” By advocating dancing in defiance instead of forceful counter-protesting, EDL offer a safer way to voice opposition for far-right marches without encountering the violence plaguing those events. Moffett himself became involved after encountering the EDL, vibrantly counter-protesting at a March for Britain in Brighton during 2014. He approached them and said they need a DJ, to be told it would be him if he wanted. There’s no arguing with Moffett’s DJ credentials, having been resident at legendary London nightspots Limelight and The Wag. He’s clearly passionate about disco and its place within the history of dance music, gleefully talking about old records and the impact of people like François Kevorkian, Larry Levine and Mel Cheren. He’s also critical of many aspects of the modern clubbing experience, he bemoans the prevalence of “Lifestyle House” and the rise of “International Beige”. He’s also adamant disco has a proud heritage of encouraging inclusion, being a hedonistic culture embraced by black, latino and gay minorities driving the 70s. Although there were once strong divisions between these communities, the shared love for Hi-NRG music united all under a message of acceptance and perseverance. Now EDL organise talks and debates, fundraising club nights and make festival appearances across the nation. You may have seen them at Boomtown, March of the Mermaids or rocking the BN1 Stage at Kemptown Carnival this summer. The organisation is now looking to centralise their shows, with an eye on raising significant amounts of money for charitable organisations that share their beliefs. It’s felt they should be using the enormous grassroots support they’ve established to help people working with communities. Whilst hate-crime, racism and Islamophobia are still, in some quarters, difficult subject matters to broach so the EDL are striving to provide a platform for the debate. If you want to stand up against intolerance, want to protest against nationalism or simply love a good party, you should check out what they do. As Moffett says at the start of every EDL gig, “We are the English Disco Lovers… You are the English Disco Lovers.” English Disco Lovers are holding a free beach party at Fortune of War, Brighton Seafront, on Fri 5 Sept, 9:00pm - late.

Gogglebox We pop round for tea with the Michael Family from Brighton and discuss TV love/hates, fan attention and mistaken identities For anyone who has been unable to access terrestrial television or else have been living under a rock for the last year and a half, Gogglebox is an observational documentary following ordinary couples and families from across the UK as they peruse through the week’s most watched television shows, with entertaining results. Described as a light mixture of both Harry Hill’s TV Burp and The Royle Family, Gogglebox has already won a BAFTA for best ‘Reality and Constructed Factual Programme’ and enjoyed massive national success for the last three series with consistently high viewing figures. With a new series due to hit our screens soon, I catch up with the Michael family from Brighton, who have graciously invited me to their home to tell me all about their experience of being on one of Channel 4’s most watched TV shows. Among the family members who have starred in the series since the pilot are; dad Andrew, mum Carolyne, daughter Alex and son Louis (Other daughter Katy has also appeared in the series but unable to attend at the time). While entering their beautiful house and being ushered into the lounge, I secretly wondered if the family were exactly as they portrayed themselves on Gogglebox, or if it was all an act for the cameras. Within minutes, my question was answered as the recognisable banter and light bickering ensued ingredients that have no doubt contributed to their popularity with fans.

By Shane Tyas

at least 3 or 4 more episodes after that’. On the subject of shows that they dislike, The X Factor and soaps are at the forefront. ‘I especially can’t bear Coronation Street’, pipes up Andy. ‘Every time I hear the theme tune I have to switch it over straight away’. With the general concept of Gogglebox following the viewing habits of different families and couples across the country, it’s unsurprising that most of them have never even met, though the Michaels were keen to share who they particularly like. Among their favourites were fellow Brightonians Chris and Stephen, Brixton pair Sandy and Sandra, and the Siddiqui family from Derby. With so many households from varied backgrounds and opinions, I asked the family if they felt there was any element of competition between themselves and the other Goggleboxers. ‘It just depends on what you’re giving them’, Louis answers. ‘If you’re not particularly on form one week, then you don’t expect to get much airtime, so yeah, there is some competition sometimes. Whenever we are filmed it’s usually around 1% that actually gets aired’. Carolyne then proceeds to explain that all of the programmes that they view are actually chosen for them. This is for the purpose of showing the public ‘which shows are relevant that particular week’ and creating a difference of opinion, which she says can have an affect on them sometimes on just how much they have to say about it.

Curiosity aroused, I asked them exactly how they came to be on Gogglebox. ‘It was completely random’ laughs Carolyne, ‘They did street recruiting in Brighton, my daughter Katy spotted them and thought “This looks great, my family would be perfect for this.” From there the producers got in touch with us and gave us all a telephone interview, and then they came down and gave us a screen test. To be honest, we didn’t think they would pick us at all’. ‘At first we weren’t really bothered, it was just supposed to be for a laugh’, chimes in Andy. He then explained how he had second thoughts about appearing on the programme, and one of the show’s top producers had a job convincing them otherwise. ‘At this point I wasn’t sure what to do, I didn’t really care that much, quite frankly, so I said to my son Louis “You know what? I’m going to leave the decision to you, I’m fine either way” and Louis just turned around and said “Let’s do it!” so here we are.’ Self-confessed TV addicts, the Michaels began to list some of their favourite shows, with Breaking Bad, Miranda, The Big Bang Theory and Game of Thrones topping their incredibly varied list. ‘We pretty much love everything’ admits Carolyne. ‘I get really easily hooked on a series’ continues Alex. ‘I’ll watch one episode just to relax, then I find myself watching

THEY TELL US ‘WE HAVE TO WATCH WHAT PACKAGE FOR TO BECAUSE IT CREATES A ED, AND IF OLV INV S ILIE ALL OF THE FAM ING ENTIRELY WE WERE TO WATCH SOMETH , THEN THERE DIFFERENT TO THE OTHERS TO THE SHOW’. WOULDN’T BE MUCH POINT

As relative newbies to the world of reality TV, I was interested to know what their initial reaction was to seeing themselves on screen for the first time. ‘It felt like watching a home movie’ says Louis. ‘It didn’t feel like the rest of the country was watching at all’. ‘It was a gradual thing’, Alex elaborates. ‘Because the first series was a pilot, the first time we watched ourselves we had no idea how successful it was going to be or just how many people would be watching it with us. Even after 3 series, it’s still really strange to see ourselves’. ‘The only time we actually process that this is actually happening is when we are stopped in the street’ adds Andy. ‘We do actually like it, to be honest, and it’s then we think “bloody hell! This thing is really happening”. At this point all of the family nod in agreement and begin to

BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 33 ]

tell me just how much positive feedback they have received from the public, to the point that they are almost in disbelief over fans telling them how much they love them and Gogglebox. ‘They tell us, “Honestly, we love it!” and you can tell they really are being genuine’. Carolyne recalls an incident earlier that day whist out having coffee with her family. ‘We were sitting down having our coffee, then all of a sudden this huge tattooed arm shoots through the middle of the table and I thought “bloody hell! He’s going to nab my coffee.”’ ‘He was actually coming forward to shake my hand’ laughs Louis, ‘but it’s great! One of my favourite perks of being part of the show is that you get to meet so many nice and interesting people. I had an hour-long conversation the other day, just because I asked them what time it was.’ Having already achieved national recognition through appearing in all the series so far, The Michaels are currently enjoying their time on Gogglebox. However, what everyone - except diehard fans - may not know is that it isn’t just the four of them on every series. Daughter Katy, who originally instigated her family appearing on TV, was due to appear with the rest of her family on the first series. She moved away for a while to Australia just before the pilot series was due to start filming, paving the way for Alex, who was living in London at the time to fill in for her. By series two, Katy returned for filming, by which time Alex had then returned to London. ‘I just want to take the opportunity to say, because we’re never in it together and alternate between series, a lot of people think we’re actually the same person,’ she smiles. ‘From a distance, if you’re not concentrating, we do look similar and are both always sat in between our mum and brother. Once, I went into a pub in Kemptown and the bartender told he how much he loved it. He said to me the funniest line that I said was “Google that shit”. I couldn’t be bothered to explain that it was actually my sister, not me’.

After talking for a while about their Gogglebox experiences, the conversation moved on to other family activities that they share together. It became apparent how close they were as a family, from nightly dinners together and going for walks to picnics, day trips and yearly holidays. They did confess that even though they attempt to do as many family activities as they can, one of their favourites is indeed watching a programme they all enjoy as a whole family and rushing to their sofa, Simpsons’ style. ‘There are times when we are watching something together and it does get a little embarrassing. Like American Pie, when he’s actually banging the pie or Sexbox, which we were made to watch on Gogglebox,’ admits Carolyne. ‘It is a little uncomfortable when that gets shown and you’re there with your children’. Overall, the Michaels have expressed total gratitude for being on Gogglebox and their admiration for the producers. ‘They listen to us,’ says Andy. ‘They are very generous. There have been occasions where there has been a minor argument or if we didn’t think the filming went particularly well. I would phone them up and say, “I’m not happy about this bit. You won’t show it, will you?” and they said no. They were very gentlemanly about it’. As we come to the end of our interview, they are eager to share their exciting news that there will be a Gogglebox book out later in the year, with them due to do book signings in Brighton. This is one of their highlights, along with being part of a BAFTA-winning series. In spite of being currently one of the most recognised families on television, the Michaels show no signs of being fame-hungry. Instead, they portray themselves exactly as they are - a normal, tight-knit unit who bounce off each other with one-liners and endless banter. ‘We’re grateful to be on there, really’ says Carolyne. ‘And we’re going to enjoy it while it lasts’. GOGGLEBOX IS BACK ON SCREEN AT THE END OF SEPTEMBER.

Boomtown Festival 2014

By Guy Cheston

Our eager and slightly inebriated journalist wanders the streets of Boomtown to the sounds of the beats On Thu 7 Aug, I arrived at the fantasy world of Boomtown, with a certain sense of mystery and intrigue. Of course I’d heard the place was a realm for all the craziest and darkest to convene and ‘unleash the beast’ for four days. Only one thing for it... As you walk through the grounds of the festival, you instantly take in the insanity of the atmosphere and begin to appreciate the layout and design of the site. This is a place that immerses you in visual entertainment at every corner. From Downtown to Uptown, it’s a city to explore. Particularly, the infamous Wild West where cowboys roam the streets (convincingly stay in character and narrative), to the ramshackle Old Town and the upper class, electro-swing infused Mayfair districts. It’s certainly enough to keep your mind entertained and your journey continuous. Once you’ve been around the festival a few times, you feel confident enough to venture alone; to walk through Chinatown, head up to the psy-trance forest or get lured into the reggae sounds of Tangled Roots beside it. It really is magical! Every stage has its own genre, captures the imagination and is aesthetically pleasing. The Lion Den - a giant temple straight out of Indiana Jones and covered in vines - was where most of the artists, including reggae legend Jimmy Cliff, The Skints and The Wailers graced the stage. As night falls, everything takes a drastic turn. The atmosphere changes from the chilled-out reggae vibe to an electricity in the air. You can sense the place is about to lose the plot. All the animals are let out of their cages and the place is Boomin’.

All of the stages look even more astounding at night, including Arcadia - a giant robot alien spaceship - which spits balls of fire and flames into the air, warming the evening vibe. If you are planning on ‘going on a big one’ the first night, then go ahead. But bear in mind the music everywhere stops at midnight, then the place actually quiets down, most people heading back to their humble homes on the steep camp site hills of Boomtown. Mornings are always the best at festivals especially Boomtown. I love to hear all the stragglers coming back to their tents, mumbling, crying, falling over tents and often passing out outside. It’s at those moments where you think to yourself: “This cannot be planet Earth!” No one seems normal any more. The break-down of civilised behaviour begins, but this is a good thing, you’re getting the most out of the festival and probably having a good time. As the days unravel and you lose all sense of time and space, you begin adapting to it all, accepting the grounds like your new home. The thought of never leaving Boomtown becomes overwhelming. This is visually the most interesting festival I have been to and one of the best all round, I can definitely recommend it. I’ll be booking my early-bird tickets on 1 Nov when they go live!

Where cutting-edge performance, gigs and visual art meet historic architecture in a city-centre setting, Brighton Dome offers a slice of culture and a great night out like nowhere else in Brighton. Comprised of three historical venues, the building - formerly the Prince Regent’s stables and riding house - is part of the Royal Pavilion Estate and shares its picturesque gardens. Sitting at the heart of Brighton’s art and culture scene, the organisation also presents the internationally-renowned and much-loved Brighton Festival each May.

Brighton Dome Concert Hall

Having played host to some of the world’s biggest names in arts and entertainment over the years from David Bowie to Jimi Hendrix and Beyoncé - the Concert Hall is the place to experience your favourite stadium artists, large-scale circus performance and moving dance performance in a more intimate setting. It was even the setting for the Eurovision Song Content in 1974; the same year that ABBA took home the coveted title for Sweden. This autumn, the tradition of booking big names continues with artists such as Scottish rockers Mogwai, audio-visual hero Jon Hopkins, legendary 2 Tone band The Specials and Grammy Award winner Gregory Porter gracing the historic stage alongside Canadian daredevil circus troupe Cirque Alfonse and hip-hop theatre company Boy Blue Entertainment with their manga-meets-martial arts performance “The Five.”

Brighton Dome Corn Exchange

Boasting everything from exciting electronic pop courtesy of Little Dragon to the lie-in king of comedy Seann Walsh and interactive theatre with Action Hero’s “Hoke’s Bluff” this autumn, this is not your average performance space. Thanks to an incredibly versatile layout, the venue can host world-class classical music performed in the round one day and a raucous club night the next.

Brighton Dome Studio Theatre

The building’s most intimate space, this is the venue to get up-close and personal with the rising stars of the music scene. In the next few months hotly-tipped experimental-pop artist FKA Twigs, soul-tinged popster How to Dress Well and steel pan legends Fimber Bravo will perform on stage, as will new theatre pieces from the likes of Actors Touring Company and hot stage stars TOOT. It’s the perfect place to try something new.

Their seasonal brochure is widely distributed across the city beyond and tickets for all events are available online at brightondome.org, via the phone on 01273 709709 or in person from Brighton Dome’s ticket office on New Road. To get all the latest news about show announcements and other exclusives, ‘like’ the venue on Facebook or follow them on Twitter (@brightdome and @brightfest). Take a journey with us into the murky depths of the fiercest seas and seek out the legendary Kraken. Breaching through tides of spice, caramel and other natural flavours, the mighty Kraken Brighton’s favourite black spiced rum - arises.

For four years now - fresh from the shores of the Caribbean right here to those of the UK – Kraken Rum has been making its mark all around our seaside town. Witness the majestical creature at The World’s End on London Road, peer at its ferocity in the gardens at the Thomas Kemp in Kemptown or if you’re brave enough, spend the night with it at the Kraken Suite in Hotel Pelirocco, Regency Square. The Kraken Rum takes its name from the mythical sea beast, which is said to have wreaked havoc with tall ships and rum-running vessels throughout history. To that end, the result of a night out with The Kraken rum is said to be similar to the experiences of those sailors who have gone eye-to-eye and toe-to-tentacle with the giant creature - They are happy to have survived and are looking forward to ROUND TWO. The Kraken’s proprietary bottle is a replica of a Victorian Rum bottle and features two handles – allowing for easy portability (as well as potability). While the smooth taste of The Kraken rum certainly lends itself to be enjoyed as a sipping rum, it also works well as a key ingredient in a number of rum-based cocktails. One of the city’s talented mixologists Lucy Piper – bar manager at The Cyclist Refreshment Rooms at Brighton Station - created a tasty concoction exclusively for all BN1 readers. The Axis of Awesome The Rock Comedy Act from Down Under

Global musical comedy sensation, The Axis of Awesome have acquired over 60 million hits on YouTube, four studio albums, regular sold out shows worldwide and plenty of loyal fans. Their debut show The Axis of Awesome Comeback Spectacular snared members Jordan Raskopoulos, Lee Naimo and Benny Davis the 2008 Moosehead Award. Now they, and their brand new show Viva La Vida Loca Las Vegas, are touring the world. This new offering features a few classic Axis tunes and brand new compositions, including examinations of how to dance to Dubstep and why Davis got addicted to Candy Crush, and Cry Yourself A River, which has already attracted 2.5 million YouTube hits. The title marries three of the ‘greatest songs ever’, namely La Vida Loca by Ricky Martin, Viva La Vida by Coldplay and Viva Las Vegas by Elvis. “We thought we’d open the show by putting these songs together,” guitarist Naimo tells me. “It’s good as it sounds, I promise!” At this point it occurs to me musical comedy acts suffer a different dilemma from ’normal’ comedy scene concerning fresh material. With your average stand-up, people aren’t interested in hearing the jokes he’s been turning out on panel shows all year, they yearn to experience new material. Conversely fans of a music act are the exact opposite, only wanting to hear the old favourites. Then in the middle somewhere are the reviewers and critics, who always have to be appeased, despite not buying tickets or CDs. “Even at places like Edinburgh, where you get slapped on the wrist for old material, our fans seem to buck that trend and berate us for not playing what they want to hear.” Taking a cavalier attitude to time zone differences, I’ve called Naimo just after lunch, catching him in Sydney just as he’s turning in for the night. Tomorrow he’s filming scenes for a special web series the band are creating. Packed full of revealing ‘behind the scenes’ footage, each video’s story arc covers topics like blowing entire budgets on ludicrous costumes and how to make props from discarded household items. All of it indicates the band might just be a Spinal Tap for the YouTube generation. All the perfect tropes of a rock band obviously all exaggerated out of all proportions - are present. Naimo laughs when he tells me they’ve scripted for each film, but few have turned out the same as conceived. Each member of The Axis of Awesome brings a different strength to their output. Naimo provides the comic edge, Davis the music and Raskopoulos has the voice that binds the songs

together. “Jordan and I will come up with a lot of the ideas. Often if you have an idea for a song, but there’s no musical gene that goes with it. You sometimes have to go with something less funny, but works with the music.” After completing these webisodes the next big task is bringing the new show to Britain, firstly to Edinburgh Festival, then on to Brighton’s Komedia on Fri 19 Sep 2014. A particular allure of coming to Britain is the prescience of so many great live sketch acts over here, especially during festival seasons.

VE DON’T HA CH E W “ LIVE SKET A LOT OF ALIA , SO I GET IN AUSTR CITED WHEN QUITE EXCOME TO THE I GET TO EE A LOT OF UK AND S CH.” LIVE SKET

He says they’re looking forward to playing in Brighton and sampling the City’s delights, especially the Pier. I try to extoll the shabby virtues of the ramshackle West Pier, marking it as a modern wonder of the world. Naimo’s initial enthusiasm ebbs away when, through some cross-examination, he discovers he can’t play arcade games, let alone walk on its structure. Inevitably the conversation turns to The Four Chords Song - the live filming at 2009 Melbourne International Comedy Festival becoming one of the highest rated comedy videos on YouTube, but will they ever get sick of performing it? “Yes,” he chuckles. “About six years ago. We’ve got a brand new set of songs that have never appeared in any other incarnation of it. We have got a brand new version of it. That just shows you how many four chord songs there are!” He tells me they constantly intend to rerecord the song, but every time an opportunity arrives, a new set of pop records with similar chord structures are released, all of them deserving inclusion. This succinctly shows the inherent power of music. Even a few simple chords placed together can create a catchy tune that plagues you for months. “Yes,” he solemnly concedes, “but you should only use it for good, not evil.” The Axis of Awesome plays Brighton’s Komedia on Tue 23 Sep 2014 www.axisofawesome.net

SEPT-OCT MAN UP, JONNY FLUFFYPUNK

LEE MACK

KATHERINE RYAN: GLAM ROLE MODEL Tue 14 Oct

Komedia

Layabout poet Jonny Fluffypunk has become a father. Who is he to shape a young life? This is a poignant, defiantly lo-fi expedition to the heart of late-onset responsibility and the struggle for self-belief.

The multi-award winning star of Not Going Out and Would I Lie To You? brings his quickfire quips and lively banter to the seaside. His first live tour in 4 years, Mack has realised he’s overdue to take his well-observed gags and incredible stage-craft out on the road.

Sexy, sultry and dangerously fierce comedy from the pop-culture obsessed Canadian. She’s pleased to announce she was thankfully unaffected by recent death threats and survived the world’s first crack-smoking mayor.

Featuring a nationally renowned stand-up poet, a cardboard suitcase and some sock puppets, this comic tale asks if a bohemian coffee-house revolutionary can transform himself into a role model. Intricate, surreal, ironic and witty, this life-affirming show should be ringing true with a few of the City’s residents.

Proudly old-school and all the funnier for it, expect some moments of reflection (he’s had a more than his fair share of life-experience!) but true madness is never far away. It’s a long over-due chance to remind ourselves Mack is one of comedy’s greats.

A recognisable face on British TV, with appearances on Live At The Apollo, Mock The Week, QI, 8 Out of 10 Cats and more, Ms Ryan is stepping up once more for her second UK tour. Quick-witted and brilliant, her shock and awe tactics often conceal well thought out serious points. An acid-tongued, bitchy and thoughtful delight.

Otherplace at Bar Broadway

The star of Being Human, Life’s too Short and Derek brings his Carnival of Monsters to Brighton. Coming along will be his lovably grotesque creations new and old; Anna Mann, Star of Stage and Screen, Len Parker Nottingham based karate and Transformers addict plus Thwor the mighty god of Thwunder! There’ll be music, stories, poems, freaks, games, special guests and death traps. There’s an entirely new comedy experience every show, from the bizarre mind of this true comedy original.

www.otherplacebrighton.co.uk

Otherplace at Bar Broadway Ben Target is perfect, bathe in his glory. The Edinburgh Comedy Award Best Newcomer nominee, and Leicester Mercury’s Comedian of the Year, brings his unnerving originality to tone. Appearing like a mix of clownish landed gentry and sociopathic cult leader, the average Target performance is distinctly out of the ordinary. If previous shows are anything to go by, there’ll be plenty of surprises on the way to wherever he’s going. This is happening, do not try to resist.

www.otherplacebrighton.co.uk

A Brighton Fringe favourite returns for another bite of the pie, this time combining comedy with food, both quite unconventionally cooked. A fanatical self-taught cook, George Egg has an anarchic approach to making food. Dissatisfied with the quality and cost of hotel room-service he takes matters into his own capable hands. Risky, inventive, and sometimes bizarrely stupid, Egg is full of daft appeal. His brand of frivolous fun might not be for anyone seeking ‘high-brow’ laughs, but the more unpretentious will be amazed at the possibilities he finds in everyday items. www.otherplacebrighton.co.uk

Sara Pascoe More than just a Pointless Celebrity

By Stuart Rolt

It’s a faintly strange experience when a person you’re researching pops up on the TV in the background. Obviously I’m not so romantic as to suggest the planets had aligned, or it was kismet, but it was faintly satisfying to see Sara Pascoe smash it on Pointless Celebrities. Along with fellow comic Josh Widdicombe, a colleague for two seasons on TV’s Stand Up For The Week, she demonstrated a range of facile knowledge. So naturally one of the first things to come up, when I talk to her a week later, is this recent triumphant appearance on Saturday tea-time TV. Although it becomes evident her competitors weren’t anywhere in the same league as her. “In the dressing room a lot of them had done the show before, but still didn’t know the rules,” she tells me. The truth is Pascoe is something of a reader, and the more varied the subject matter, the better. Her stand-up shows consistently provide opportunity to break down complex issues into amusing, easy-to-understand pieces. The source for her material comes from a vociferous appetite for information, and seems she’s absorbed plenty of pointless facts by osmosis. Poor Su Pollard and the two less famous ones from Birds of a Feather, they never stood a chance on that game show. Pulling apart the world around her, then reassembling the pieces in different order, is a signature of Pascoe shows. Previous themes have focussed on women’s roles in the media and Nietzschean philosophy. Gathering together as much human awareness as possible for one person, she’s offering perspectives on the world, popping in an occasional personal anxiety to keep it all relevant. Right now Pascoe is up in Edinburgh for festival duties, with a new show exploring how the past affects relationships. Apparently personal history, parent relationships and the evolution of pair bonding, all affect how we behave around one another. She’s casting an eye over history’s epic romances, tips to make a relationship last and why people are so desperate to find a life partner in a show as intellectually stimulating as it is humour-packed. Her love of books might stem from the heavy workload incurred by reading English at Sussex University, a course she got onto without previously seeing the campus. The area still occupies a special place in her heart. “Brighton’s such a wonderful place to hang around...“ Even though she’s moved on, Pascoe still enjoys visiting and as a vegan the City offers a superior range of eatery options. She’s also something of a triple threat, now comedy has been joined by acting and writing in her repertoire. Coming soon is Pascoe’s appearance on Crackanory - the adult version of the kid’s TV show - which features comedians, actors and a mix of

live action and animation. A while back you probably saw her pop up on political satire The Thick Of It, or playing a member of the Perfect Curve team on 2012’s Olympic parody Twenty Twelve. This latter show offering an irreverent dissembling of a buzz-word obsessed PR agency, faced with a career-defining campaign. Despite some exacting demands placed upon the cast by writer and director John Morton, she feels it was an incredible experience. “I really love Jessica Hines, so I was excited to work with her.” Recently she’s been busying herself writing a book. This nonfiction volume pulls together personal experiences and just a few of the interesting theories she’s read. By her own admission this auto-didactic process offers an easy way to understand how she herself feels about things. But Pascoe says there’s no prerequisite to make the audience understand her world view. “I don’t think it’s as egotistical as that. It’s more about enjoying writing. Because I read so much, maybe I can condense it down for someone who can’t read two non-fiction books in a week, so I can just get down the interesting things for them.” Sara Pascoe creates a thoughtful comedy environment, where evolutionary theory sits comfortably beside the gags. There may be no desperation for easy laughs, but this is so much more than a dry lecture in socio-sexual anthropology. It’s simply an animated and charming trip inside a mind that’s always asking: “Why?” Sara Pascoe vs. History comes to Brighton Dome’s Studio Theatre on Fri 24 Oct, as part of Brighton Comedy Festival. www.brightoncomedyfestival.com

Cardinal Burns Exclusive interview with the Channel 4 hit Comedy sketch show

BRIGHTO N COMEDY FE STIVA L

By Laura Stevens

British Comedy Award-winning double act, Seb Cardinal and Dustin Demri-Burns, have treated the British public to the machismo-oozing delights of minicab-drivers Hashtag and Bukake, revolted us with their Office Flirts and portrayed anarcho-artist Banksy as a social incompetent.

With a loveable sense of childish wonderment, the duo are kicking new life into the tired sketch show format. This is very much an ensemble affair though. Bridget Christie, Aisling Bea, Simon Coombs and Clare Warde are a few of the faces you’ll recognise on the TV show.

Their TV show, Cardinal Burns, has already amassed a considerable cult following with its grotesque and strange parodies of British cultural life. Sharply written and hilariously funny, it offers up Crystal Maze-like obstacles impeding workers at a parcel collection point, strange TV presenters and the depressingly inane stars of a structuredreality show.

Now they are returning to the live arena with a mixture of characters from the TV show, a dew they’ve always done live and some exciting new ones. “It’s a good combination so I think people will come and see acts they have enjoyed from the show and then something new as well.”

Now they’re brushing off their live show and hitting the road, in a series of shows that will see them pay a visit to Brighton Comedy Festival. “We’re really excited for it,” Seb Cardinal tells me. ”We’re putting it together at the moment and it’s feeling good.” First broadcast in 2012 on E4, their debut season earned a BAFTA nomination for Best Comedy. For the second season they’ve found themselves an even bigger audience to shock, be wilder and entertain, with a move over to Channel 4 this year. With their growing fame, they’re starting to experience a few of the weirder aspects of public life, like odd-ball fans.

SA HERE WA CENTLY T TO E P R “ U E WHO CAM RTED , ID C A N GIRL O SHE STA ESTIVAL . F A T A AT US, S U STARING D N A T YOU!’ G IN CRY E TO MEE IC N O S T’S EALLY GOING: ‘I E WE R E R W E IK L T IT FEL G HER.” UPSETTIN Arguably puerile, but ceaselessly imaginative, some of the more bizarre and offensive elements have been dropped. This might be in respect of the more mainstream viewers they’re attracting now, or a sign the duo are refining and developing their quirky brand of humour.

I’m talking to Cardinal just as the pair prepare for their first show of an Edinburgh Festival run. This new show that goes beyond the confines of its TV-bound sibling - is ready to go. But we’re not going to get much info on the new characters. “I think it will have to be a surprise in the show. You’ll see familiar characters in the tour later on like the private investigators and cabbies, but it’s nice to throw in a few surprises along the way.” The amount of work placed in bringing each character into a live performance can be challenging. A few parts were originally created for stage, so Cardinal and Demri-Burns have experience of working out how these characters might sit in a slightly different world. It’s evidence of how much work this pair put into each show. What might seem like slightly strange, and spontaneous creations are in fact carefully considered and well-rounded comic personalities. “Taking them back to stage is really interesting, as you have to really rethink how you present these characters. You can’t just keep going ‘you remember this guy from the series’? It’s how to re-invent them and keep them interesting. You have to tell a story that works in a live format. It’s a challenge but it’s a good challenge.”

James Acaster You’d better recognise! Offering astute and deadpan deconstructions of everyday life, James Acaster is slowly forcing his way in to the comedy big time. This gentle 29 year old has already seen two Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Awards nominations and popped up all over TV and radio in the last five years. Now he’s back in Edinburgh, dividing his time between writing and performing his new show. He says he’s really enjoying the show as the reaction has been lovely, plus he’s worked out who he ultimately should be writing for. “I tend to focus on improving,” he admits. “I’ve been tending to write stuff that I think is funny, first and foremost. It’s meant that I’ve got a show that I look forward to each night.” This new show, Recognise, has already enabled Acaster to seize the New Zealand International Comedy Festival Award for Best International Show, when he was over there in May. Despite the heavyweight touring he’s doing with it, he maintains that the show still amuses him. With working life beginning selling soft drinks and ice creams to thrill seekers at a theme park near Kettering, Acaster had been trying to get various bands up and running since he was thirteen. The life of a burgeoning rock star began to wear him down though, bandmates shared his work ethic and he found it frustrating not being able to regularly book gigs. Eager to create and perform, he elected to try stand-up, at least until he discovered this was his true calling in life. Not wanting to half-heartedly go to comedy, he threw himself into writing, experimenting and booking shows. With this career change, he discovered it was significantly easier with promoters willing to showcase his talents, allowing him to develop his routines and stage-craft faster. Unlike when performing with bands, the rate of progression in writing didn’t hold back his ceaseless yearning to continuously improve. “With stand-up I could write stuff all the time and book gigs all the time. Although I wasn’t very good at the time, or enjoying all the gigs, I did enjoy the fact I was allowed to be really productive and prolific.” Taking about six months to create a show that he loved, he decided after a full year that comedy was indeed the place for him. He says that it’s hard to see yourself as a beginner, especially when you see comedians like Eddie Izzard perform weird and leftfield material to get people laughing. From this you can look in the wrong places for the faults in your own performances, and perhaps harbour the misconception you’re always in front of the wrong crowd. He’s adamant the key to being a great performer is down to attitude, realising you’re not the finished article and perhaps you’re not quite good enough… yet. Since Acaster stopped blaming the audience, his career has flourished, but he stresses it’s still a learning experience.

James Acaster Now Acaster’s new show sees him once again taking the audience into a world of his creation, an oddball selection of treatises on the matters fixating him. This eclectic mash of personal politics is packed full of the enigmas, oddities and perils of modern British society that wait us at every turn. Even when he seems to be dissolving into a heap of mawkish weirdness, he’ll snap out with an observation so sharp you’d forgive any previous divergence. Running between physical homages to the world of competitive ice-dancing or exploring the hidden risks in leading a conga, one beautiful constant in Acaster’s comedy is the skill with which he gracefully connects ludicrously dissimilar subjects. Conversely there’s not really a place for sweeping statements or altering public perception in this comedian’s routines. He accepts that his style of comedy is perhaps not the right platform for exploring big-picture issues. “I don’t think I’ve got anything profound to say that nobody’s heard before. There’s a lot of temptation to try and get a message across, even when it is something basic you might hear in a primary school playground.” But it’s OK. We don’t always want to be confronted by the daunting realities of the world at large. We all need something low-key, whimsical and very silly in our lives. This is where Acaster comes in, to wring comic gold from the bewilderingly trivial. I’m sure the significance of his many strange declarations ad obsessions will ultimately shine through. James Acaster’s Recognise comes to Brighton Dome Studio Theatre, on Sat 18 Oct, as part of Brighton Comedy Festival www.brightoncomedyfestival.com

Brighton Burlesque Festival Coming to the Thistle Hotel on 15 November Brighton Burlesque Festival comes to The Thistle Hotel, on Sat 15 Nov to showcase the finest burlesque the South Coast has to offer.

As well as the main stage, there’s also a ‘pole stage’ where the superb dancers showcasing their talents include: Bitter and Twisted Burlesque and Kitty Kicks.

Originally a form of cheap and cheerful theatre for the working classes, burlesque’s main objective was to use comedy, music and dance to challenge the high-brow culture and politics of the Victorian upper classes.

With plenty of models and walkabout performances from many of the burlesque artists, there’s also plenty for those wanting to get involved, with ‘have a go’ sessions and prizes for the best-dressed visitors. Other attractions include cabaretstyle table seating to enjoy the stage-shows and Lizzie Lock’s photo-booth, with glamorous props and hats.

Since its revival, burlesque has found a new audience looking for something sexy, subversive and feminine, regardless of age or dress size. Now this art form is entering the mainstream, with hundreds of burlesque classes and shows springing up across the country. Now Brighton sees its biggest ever burlesque event come to the relaxed atmosphere of The Thistle Hotel. So far the acts confirmed for the main stage include: Betty Nails, The Sweet Tease, Dollie Dore, Amora Divine, Violet Blaze, Crystal King, Cherry Bella, Coco Deville, Cherry Deville, Bruise Violet and Chi Chi Revolver. Special announced guest and international burlesque star Sukki Singapora will be gracing the headline spot!

There will also be stalls from Betty Lou, Sacred Latex, Bruise Violet, Fancier Feather and Something Wicked This Way Comes - with many more to be announced - offering every accessory and service any budding performer and fan could ever hope for. All burlesque models courtesy of SCS Events. South Coast Swing Events ranges from 1920s starlet singers to filthy Rhythm and Blues bands, burlesque, pole, pop-up parlours and everything in between. They cater for private and public events from hen parties to festivals. www.southcoastswingevents.com

Tickets for the event are just £10 in advance. Visit www.brightonburlesque.co.uk for more details

The Electric Bike City Speed Hop on and ride at ease After a chance encounter at the Eco-Technology Show 2014, we found ourselves with the use of a shiny Byocycle City Speed 20” 2014 Folding Electric Bike (£549.99) for a month. Whilst not the prettiest of machines, any shortcomings in the looks department were forgiven when we realised how much fun it was to ride. Whilst not as fast as a scooter, it’s also not as noisy. So there’s much fun to be had sneaking up on cycle lane users and silently overtaking them with a smug, sweatfree look on your face. The battery seemed to cope well with the daily 15min journey to and from work, rarely needing a top-up charge. Giving you that extra push when cycling up hills is always a bonus, especially in Brighton. Why bother though? It’s far better to arrive exertion-free - thanks to the power assist mode - at your destination, whilst your car-bound fellow road users sit in traffic, or other cyclists arrive all smelly and tired. It certainly folds up neatly, allowing for storage or access to public transport, although the battery does mean it could be

a little heavy for some. Whilst hills face no challenge, folding and carrying it up a set of stairs emphasised its weightiness. Capable of knocking out an eye-watering (and totally legal) 15 mph of power, it can go even faster if you add power by pedalling. It all certainly makes sense in an urban environment. Brighton sees a 20mph speed limit in built up areas, but often cars average well below this. So as a city runabout, this is loads of fun. Just make sure you’re storing it on the ground floor.

Now regarded as one of the finest single screen cinemas in the country, The Duke of York’s is well known for screening an eclectic programme of films and events, mainly focusing on quality indie, arthouse, foreign language and documentaries. Lolly Film Studio www.lollyfilmstudio.com grace@lollyfilmstudio.com Unit 2, 29-42 Windsor Street, Brighton, East Sussex, BN1 1RJ

By Holly Cozens

Lolly Film Studios Brighton filmmakers talk about their innovative city studio and impact on the local scene Back when I attended college many moons ago, filmmaking involved a hefty great camera the size of a car, several hundred video tapes to record on and what was a pretty nifty analogue editing suite at that time. Owning equipment was expensive, hiring editing space was tricky and it seemed like people weren’t as eager to jump in front of a camera (apart from the super eager Drama students). Fast forward to present day, in an era where we are dripping in technology and there is about to be the first iPhone Film Festival. Yes, I am currently rolling my eyes at the thought of thousands of Apple lovers taking to their video setting and thinking they’re the next Spielberg. However, I am also going to contradict myself as I remark positively about how technology has advanced to a point where it has become readily accessible to those who have a definitive passion for filmmaking. With all this available at our fingertips, it is important to remember that not everyone can call themselves a filmmaker but that there now needs to be more and more options for those seeking to develop any sort of emerging or progressive talent. This is what is running through my mind as I sit in a small, friendly film studio on Windsor Street in Brighton, talking to Studio Manager Grace Davis, Director/Producer Mark Davis and Director Of Photography Francesco Pezzino. As they so succinctly put it, “there is no one route into filmmaking” and Lolly Film Studios has been brewing up a long-term plan for this very reason over the past five years.

Home to local filmmakers, the infinity cove has been used as a cross-section of creative endeavor; from music videos and TV commercials, to green screen visual effects, photography and local events. The space is unique as both a dry hire place for local creatives or as a one-stop shop from idea to completion for any media project. The production and post-production facilities based at the studio are responsible for delivering over 50 hours of film, TV and short form productions for shows as wide-ranging as BBC’s ‘Sherlock’, ‘Peaky Blinders’ and teen flick ‘4.3.2.1’ for Universal. The flexible nature of their picture, sound and visual effects facilities for post-production fit in nicely with their adaptability as an approachable Brighton production company. The welcoming nature of the studio was born out of professionals moving back home from time working in London and further afield. The long-term plan is to set up a Brightonbased film studio where a production line of movies are made in succession, like a mini Ealing Studios. The first slate of four feature films begins this autumn, and the filmmakers are looking for local talent to become involved. Like many places in Brighton, community is paramount and Lolly Film Studios are eager for their “family business” to absorb new members. This is somewhere you want to head to for studio hire, production services or advice; whether you are a student merely looking for guidance right up to help in structuring certain finance packages. There is after all a level of integrity that has to be maintained amongst all these new, easily obtainable filmmaking resources in order to produce well crafted films. Lolly Film Studios are more than happy to help anyone with a thirst for knowledge and equal passion.

I’m quite hazy on the exact time that burgers became fashionable. I’m not talking about some crazy Japanese ‘Kawaii’ earrings or wearing a Filet ‘O’ Fish as a hat, I’m talking fancy buns, gourmet meat and inventive fillings. Now while I’m no stranger to a quirky concoction as my hometown had one of the best American style diners around, it is hard to pin down when this need for US comfort fast food fused with our desire for affordable, more casual ‘fine dining’ out of diner surroundings.

While I readily drank my tangy ‘Blackberry Blush’ cider (£3.60), my colleague chose smoked oat stout ale ‘Dirty Stop-out’ by Tiny Rebel brewery (£3.40). The beer menu alone is extensive, supplying thirsty customers libation from many a reliable brewery including their own House pint, coming in at a very respectable £2.95! Evidently, It is no surprise to us that Craft Beer Co is also very popular with members of CAMRA – The Campaign for Real Ale.

Nowadays, the Craft Beer Co is just one of the many places in Brighton that boasts a bountiful British burger. Grown naturally from humble beginnings five years ago by Martin Hayes and Peter Slezak, The first pub opened in Clerkenwell, 2011. The fact that these two men have known each other since they were knee high to a grasshopper resonates well with the ethos they enforce, based heavily on trust. Refusing to have any outside pressure from national brands, the beer chosen is – in Peter’s own words – “made with passion and care, from breweries we trust.” There’s that trust word again.

With a voracious appetite growing the more we looked at what was on offer, I picked the unusual ‘Elvis’ Burger (£7.95) – beef, peanut butter, crispy bacon and fried bananas – while my colleague opted for the comparatively standard Cheese and Bacon (£7.95) – red onion relish, shredded lettuce, pickles, smoked streaky bacon and mature cheddar or stilton. These were accompanied by a choice of chips, including our selections of Truffle Oil with Parmesan (£2.50 extra) and ones smothered with homemade Bacon Dust (£2.50 extra).

Situated on Upper North St, on the corner of Regent Hill, Craft Beer Co is just out of the way enough for people to actively seek out the name. Having recently undergone a renovation throughout, tripling their seating capacity and with a reopening at the end of July; me and my colleague headed down there to be one of the first two to try their brand new menu created by Forty Burgers. A good burger and efforts to use locally sourced ingredients seems to go hand in hand these days and Forty Burgers are no exception. Only meat from cows raised in Aberdeen’s lush, natural pastures enters the kitchen, creating their unique blend of 40 day aged rib and 30 day aged rump. When we walked in, the place looked bright and clean but with a traditional touch. This is helped with some fine-looking tables and chairs made by established pub furniture makers, Taylor’s Classics. As we settled into seats upstairs, overlooking the street through the sunny Juliette balcony, we took the first sips of our beer and perused the menu.

The ‘Elvis’ Burger will not be for everyone but I urge you to try the appealing combination of crunchy peanut butter, juicy beef, deliciously salted bacon and the smoked sweetness of the cooked banana. While the Bacon Dust chips are a novel concept not lost on either of us willing guinea pigs, I would be inclined to keep to a plainer portion with such a inventive burger, saving the previous to be an enjoyable ‘lone wolf’ snack. Every component to our meals was how it should have been; from the moisture-rich meat patties, fresh brioche buns, abundant fillings and fluffy chips, to the broad choice of beers and ales that Craft Beer Co pride themselves on. They also have a great range of Stokes sauces to compliment your food (I was partial to the Bloody Mary Ketchup especially). Also, an extra factor very worth considering is they offer 33% off takeaway bottled beer and wine. So, while you may find yourself spoilt for choice when it comes to a good old tasty burger, seek and ye shall find Craft Beer Co. Trust me, it’s worth it.

BYOC - Bring Your Own Cocktail Get in the mix at Brighton’s Cave of Cocktail Wonders

By Sarah Gathercole

41 Meeting House Lane Brighton BN1 1HB

The premise of a ‘Bring Your Own Bottle’ establishment is not a new one amongst the restaurants in Brighton…but where we are heading tonight is a cocktail bar!! We feel like we’ve stumbled across Brighton’s best kept secret when we finally notice the plaque above the door of number 41 Meeting House Lane, reading ‘B.Y.O.C.’. Walking inside, the mystery continues; a lonely piano in the middle of the room, a staircase and an archway concealed by a curtain. This room - later explained to me as a work in progress - is a nice added touch to the hidden away speakeasy bar; a concept the venue is clearly fashioned on. Once properly inside and seated, the overall atmosphere of the place hits us. B.Y.O.C. is set over two intimate floors, both boasting antique décor. It is drenched in a 1920s vibe, with the basement floor hiding a miniature cinema playing old 1920s films. With candle lighting throughout, only the mixologists and their cocktail bars are clearly lit, providing all guests with a front row seat for the night. The fantastic concoctions served to eagerly awaiting punters are invented before our eyes, by mixologists who seem more like chefs than bar staff; hard at work in the kitchen, testing and tasting after each new ingredient is added. This open plan innovation unifies the room; removing the traditional barrier between punter and bar tender, adding to the intimate atmosphere. Each of the mixologists on duty tonight is attentive, knowledgeable and clearly competent; creating a relaxed yet classy atmosphere during our two hour stay. However, none are as passionate as Nathaniel, who talks us through our drinks with such pride we can’t help but be inspired by his vision for this place. He treats us to an education in ‘shrubs’, explaining this is the non-alcoholic answer to vermouth and explains in depth and intricate detail how he has arrived at the unique flavours we are happily consuming with each sip of our drinks.

To complement our ‘bring your own’ bottle of Vodka, we are taken on a journey through various homemade syrups including lavender, pimento and lychee plus introduced to Bitters, such as pink peppercorn and hops. First we are served a cocktail with a frothy head; an effect we deduce is down to the added egg white. Then we are challenged to identify the secret ingredient - yellow pepper - in our second drink, determined to succeed we all fail miserably. At the end of it all, although it is a tough choice, we decide our favourite has to be the pink delight with a kick, presented as our finale. At B.Y.O.C, the general consensus is you can drink as much as you want to in your allotted time. The mixologists suggest a minimum of 4 cocktails in a 2-hour period to really enjoy the handiwork gone into each concoction. Equally, you can be as involved as you choose to be in regards to your drinks, with the mixologists consistently gauging your likes and dislikes; asking you questions about your preferences throughout the night. This allows their creative flair to marry seamlessly with customer’s palates. For us, the experience was made all the more enjoyable for giving the creative minds at B.Y.O.C. free reign. If you want to immerse yourself in the spirit of this place, then be open to trying new things, ask questions about your drinks and let the mixologists do what they do best. After all, a night out at B.Y.O.C. is more like a night out in a great restaurant; great tasting cocktails created by passionate, talented people with care and consideration for the ingredients and flavours that make up every inch of their creations. Take it from me, you are in good hands! My top tip for your visit: Take some miniatures along! This way you get to try a variety of different cocktails inspired by different spirits and most importantly, the mixologists get to spread their wings!

Be Gluten Free By Mila Statham

Baked Beans Recipe Recipe: (Serves 2) 400g tin chopped tomatoes 400g tin haricot beans, in water 2 tbsp sunflower oil 1 red onion, diced 1 tbsp red wine vinegar 2 tbsp dark muscovado sugar 1 tbsp tomato purée 1/2 tbsp paprika 1/2 tsp chilli flakes Salt & pepper Drop of gluten free BBQ sauce Chives to serve

Heat the oil in a large frying pan, add the onion and gently fry for about 5 minutes until softened. Splash the vinegar into the pan and sizzle for 30 seconds before pouring in the tomatoes. Using a potato masher, mash any big lumps of tomato into a pulp and add a tiny splash of water if needed. Stir in the sugar, paprika, purée and salt & pepper then turn down the heat and simmer for 10 minutes until you have a thick sauce. Next drain about two thirds of the water out of the tin of haricot beans and pour the rest of the contents into the sauce. Simmer for another 5 minutes then add the chilli flakes and BBQ sauce. Serve on gluten free toast and adorn with the chives.

Pizzaface Pizzaface is a popular pizza takeaway with two shops in Brighton and Hove, one in Kemptown and the other in Hove. For an extra £2 their pizzas can be made with a gluten and wheat free base which is also vegan and yeast free. Their gluten free bases are thin with crispy edges and have the traditionally stone baked flavour. Unlike other pizza places, Pizzaface use interesting ingredients to create delicious and unusual toppings. For the meat eaters there is pork and wild boar salami and lamb prosciutto. They also use fantastic cheeses such as mascarpone, Sussex blue, goat’s cheese and vegan cheese, typically around the £9-£10 price. However, Pizzaface advise that, whilst they make a serious effort to keep the flours separate, they cannot guarantee that there won’t be any cross contamination as all pizzas are made in the same oven.

Welcome from Brighton Students’ Union To make the most out of your time as a student, make sure you get involved with Brighton Students’ Union. We are dedicated to ensuring that your time at University is the best it can be! We are student led, and work solely for our student members, so YOU tell us what YOU want from us. We are currently undergoing a rebrand after extensive research with students and other stakeholders, providing us with a new logo and improving our identity round all campuses. It’s an exciting time for us!

Brighton Student Officer Team 2014-15 Brighton Students’ Union is a democratic body run for students by students. Five full-time paid elected officers, and many more part time voluntary officers lead the Students’ Union. All of these officers work to make sure students from all corners of the university are fairly and properly represented to the Union and to the University.

Meet your Officers Union President: Candice Armah

VP Campus and Communications: Sophie Cohen

Candice’s role is to represent the Union and students at a number of different conferences and events across the country, as well as campaigning on a number of issues that affect our students.

Sophie’s job is to ensure that all campuses feel like a part of the University of Brighton community, and to listen to what students want out of their campus. Sophie is also supporting the Students’ Union’s media outlets and making them more visible on every campus.

VP Academic Affairs: Maggie Garabedyan Maggie is there to help students and offer advice and representation for students on all academic matters. This year Maggie is concentrating on making course reps more visible to students.

VP Activities and Events: Kate Reynolds Kate is in charge of Students’ Union activities and events, mainly the big events such as Varsity and Holly Ball. She’s introducing a new event this year called SocFest in November as well as introducing RaG challenges to help us raise even more money for charity.

VP Wellbeing: Fliss Newton Fliss is there as support for students when it comes to non-academic matters, whether that’s housing problems or becoming more eco-friendly. This year, Fliss is campaigning for improvements with student housing conditions in the private rented sector and improving what the SU has to offer in terms of non-alcoholic events.

Community Organisers Two new Community Organisers started work in July in the Grand Parade area of Brighton. They’re working as part of the National Community Organiser Programme employed by the Locality and hosted by the University of Brighton Students’ Union.

Community organising is the work of building relationships in communities to activate people and create social and political change through collective action. So how does this differ to other community work that is already going on? The big difference is that Maddy and Valentina are independent, a-political and have no agendas; they will be completely led by the people they listen to.

Also supporting your fan tastic ideas on how to make your area even better – it is amazing what people can do if they have the right support. We ho pe that our enthusiasm is contagiou s!

Watch out for student groups’ performances – there’ll be music, magic, dancing and games going on all day! Find out about volunteering opportunities to help you feel good, get employable and meet new people. You hopefully won’t need them, but the Students’ Union Support Service are brilliant should anything go wrong, so have a chat with them to find out what they do. Speak to your Student Leadership Team. They’ll be around all day and you can ask them anything! Sign up for an NUS Extra card to save you money on the things you love. Visit our Enterprise Zone to chat sustainability with Bright ‘n’ Green, sign up to our student cooperatives or get entrepreneurial with Bee Purple. Interested in media? Chat with our student radio, TV and newspaper groups and get involved! Pick up FREE hot food at one of the many food stalls, including Domino’s, Wok and Go and Meat Liquor. Meet local companies and charities – get to know Brighton’s businesses and find out more about what goes on in your new city! Grab yourself some bargains from companies offering great deals for new students. Bring £50 cash with you to buy your exclusive freshers’ merchandise and stationery packs. Pick up all the Freshtival event information in the nightclub stand area, and discover your new favourite venue or drinking hole. Get on the Spotify bus and visit OnePiece outside of the stadium. Stay hydrated – it will be busy and it will be hot, so bring a bottle of water with you. You will be able to buy drinks there as well. If it all gets a bit much, you can have a breather by going out into the seating area round the pitch. Have fun! Talk to people, get involved, soak up the atmosphere, and get yourself ready for a fantastic year at the University of Brighton.

Bright n Green With funding from the NUS Students’ Green Fund, Brighton Students’ Union launched their Bright n Green project earlier this year. Bright n Green aims to put students at the heart of sustainability- in their own lives and their communities- addressing important issues around transport, accommodation and employability. Over the past 6 months the project has engaged with students and staff at the University of Brighton, and has been working with community partners on a range of exciting projects.

The co-operative model being used depends on the input and support of all the members in decision making, business planning and day to day running.

The Brighton Bike Co-op was launched successfully with a Bike Train from the Level to Falmer campus organised in partnership with Circus Street Bike Hub.

ut how to I got to learn more things abo d that those keep the beach clean, learne m plastic which cigarette buds are made fro them would kill the birds if they eat

This ensures that it is ‘run by students-for students’. With the improvements to the cycling infrastructure that have already been made along the Lewes Road Corridor and the improvements that have started taking place around Vogue Gyratory, there really has never been a better time to get on your bike and enjoy the benefits that cycling can bring!

Another part of the project has been focused on establishing a bike co-operative on campus and members have been hard at work developing an identity, business plan and workshop for the bike co-operative.

In March, Bright n Green organised the Big Brighton Beach Clean in partnership with Surfers Against Sewage. Following the storms earlier in the year, a team of students and staff were joined by members of a supported housing group to give Brighton beach a spring clean. The group collected 22 bin bags of litter, some of which had been washed up by the sea and some which had been left behind by careless beach users.

The University of Brighton Cycle Coop is a place you can come and bring you r bike to get it fixed, get new parts, and lear n about bicycle maintenance

The Beach Clean and the Bike Co-op are just two examples of how Bright n Green has been working with students, staff, local businesses and community organisations to put sustainability at the heart of what we do as an organisation.

Over the next year there will be a wide-range of projects and activities to get involved in including: team challenges, sustainability audits of student accommodation, business support for student enterprise and the continued growth of the bike co-op. If you would like to get involved or for more information about the project you can contact: BSUgreenSU@brighton.ac.uk Or visit us at: www.brightonsu.com/brightngreen

This project also reflects Brighton Students’ Union’s commitment to implementing sustainability through its activities and events.

Support with Contraception and Sexual Health

The CaSH Action Team can support you in taking responsibility for your sexual health. The team is a group of student volunteers, trained to deliver professional, non-judgmental advice to students. We run drop-ins once a week at Falmer, Grand Parade and Moulsecoomb where we offer free condoms, pregnancy tests and Chlamydia and Gonorrhea screening, along with all the information you need about safer sex and signposting to other local services who may be able to help. University is about having fun and new experiences; at times this may involve alcohol, and sometimes sex, so it’s good to be prepared and to always carry a condom, femidom and/or dam. It can be easy to get swept up in the moment, but thinking about contraception before you go out makes it much more likely you will have safer sex. Sometimes, despite best intentions, things don’t always go to plan, so knowing where you can access emergency contraception, and PEP (if you think you may have been exposed to HIV) as quickly as possible is important, especially if you are new to town.

You can find this information on our website - www.brightonsu.com/cash, along with information on where to be screened for STI’s if you need to.

Wellbeing The wellbeing zone within Brighton Students’ Union covers all aspects of a student’s mental, physical, spiritual and financial health and works towards ensuring that we celebrate the diversity of our members and that the University remains a safe and healthy campus fit for study! Last year the wellbeing zone had a strong focus on tacklingissues within the private rented housing sector of Brighton and Hove and working to ensure that all students are aware of their rights and responsibilities - not only as tenants but also as members of the wider community. This work included meeting with the council to improve their reporting processes, creating student focused guides that cover every step of the renting cycle as well as tips on being a good neighbour and we also took part in the local Home Sweet Home campaign. This year Brighton Students’ Union has been invited to take part in a new pilot scheme that is being run by the Home Office and the National Union of Students, Alcohol Impact. This means that the SU will now provide a more varied line up of events that are not all focused on alcohol,

in particular around the Fresher’s welcome period, as well as looking at changing student behaviours and tackling the norms around binge drinking. So keep a look out for the upcoming work of the zone!

If you would like to know more then please do contact Fliss Newton, VP Wellbeing f.newton2@brighton.ac.uk.
