SO THE LONG DAYS OF SUMMER ARE NEARLY OVER, and it’s almost time to dig out those Uggs (again!). We’ve been to all the festivals, and probably got the t-shirts, so what’s to look forward to? Well if you’re lucky enough to be in Brighton this month, there’s plenty. Kicking off the Autumn is the Brighton and Hove food and drink festival which is all about enjoying the best food and drink to be found in the city with producers, restaurants, pubs, bars, retailers, markets all joining in. Possibly the best way to enjoy it is to try out the World Food Trail on either the 4th or the 5th of September, which follows a trail of some of Brighton’s best restaurants, bars, food shops and hotels, with free tasters, themed drinks and tapas sized dishes to try. It runs between 11 and 6 on both days, and for your free World Food Trail map, go to www. brightonfoodfestival.com. Still hungry? Head for the Brighton Dome on Saturday 18th September between 10.30 and 4 for The Incredible Veggie Roadshow where you can try a whole range of veggie foods from all over the world and watch demonstrations on how to do it when you get home. Go on, give those poor animals a bit of a break and try something new! This year’s winners of Best Comedy at the Brighton Festival return this month on the 4th September as does aerial theatre company Ockham’s Razor on Saturday 11th and 12th. Crimes Against Humanities Teachers is a roller coaster ride of original

comedy and can be seen at Upstairs at Three and Ten at 8pm, and Ockham’s Razor can be found at The Corn Exchange with their new show, The Mill. The award-winning aerial theatre troupe’s latest piece is performed by five artists working with wood and steel suspended in the air, though to find out what exactly they get up to will set you back £15. Moving on from the month’s culinary and comic delights, there are also all sorts of vehicle-based shenanigans to be had. The National Speed Trials, the oldest motor racing event in Britain, returns to Brighton on September 11th, so expect to see (and hear!) a multitude of cars tearing down Madeira Drive for the closest thing you’ll get to Formula One in the BN1 postcode. We also have the Ace Café Reunion and the London to Brighton Landrover Run, which occur on the 11th and 16th of September respectively. One features 40,000 motorbikes gathering together in Brighton and the other is a ceremonial journey from London to Brighton in 4x4s. I’ll leave you to guess which is which. For all the other events going on in Brighton’s past, present and future, please leaf over the page and continue reading the city’s best and most brilliant lifestyle magazine.

JONSI

ONE OF OUR FAVOURITE MUSICAL ARTISTS and indeed one of the most acclaimed musicians worldwide, Jónsi of Sigur Rós is heading into town very soon. Since omnipresent anthems like Hoppipola started hitting the airwaves in the mid-2000s, Sigur Rós have become everyone’s favourite Icelandic band, and lead singer and songwriter Jónsi has spent the last couple of years creating his debut solo album ‘Go’, which came out this April. We were privileged enough to catch up with him in anticipation of his upcoming show at the Brighton Dome on the 14th of September. Hi Jonsi, are you excited to be coming to the UK? Yeah, it will be super nice, and I’m really excited to come. We just played Latitude Festival, which was awesome

8

SEPTEMBER 2010 WWW..BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK

What was it like? You were amazing and very popular at Latitude 2008. It was amazing. A huge extravanganza We know you have an unorthodox approach to music writing, especially with your use of Volenska. Do you always use it, even when writing solo material? No, on this album there is no.... oh yes there is one song. Candlelight uses Volenska ‘All Alright’ was the first song you sang in English - could you already speak the language or did you learn it as you sang? How did that happen? I have been able to speak English for a very long time. I’ve been playing music for 15 years and been travelling for a long, long time, but for lyrics, sometimes it is a little harder to write than in Icelandic. Like so many of Brighton’s citizens, you are an artist, a vegetarian and also gay. Do you think more towns should be like Brighton, with its liberal attitude? Is Brighton somewhere you would like to live? Will you be around for pride? Erm... yeah I don’t know if I would like to live in Brighton! The attitudes in Iceland are super. There are some laws, you know, like gay laws are very progressive in Iceland. It’s a really cool place to live. I’d love to be around in Brighton for Pride festival as I’ve never been before. My favourite thing in Brighton is the what’s it called? Merry-go-round? On the beach. Yeah, I love that. You will be playing at the Brighton Dome in September to perform your new show Go! The show seems very visually exciting - is the Dome big enough for evrything you have planned? I’m not really sure how big the Dome is. I have no clue what it is like. But the show is very scalable, we can play in any size of venue. But yes, the show is going to be very good to watch and will be on an epic scale.

59 Productions have introduced some fascinating elements to the tour, such as live butterflies and real fire. How much were you involved with the preparaton and staging of go? Quite a lot at the beginning. The guys came to Iceland and I wrote down the lyrics and told them the keywords for each song. We then stayed in touch by email and they showed me what they were doing. I kind of liked their attitude because they use all kinds of things, like animation and things. Last year you worked with the superstar DJ Tiesto. What was it like working with such a pioneer of dance music and how did you adjust to switching genre from the music you are more famous for? It’s quite easy. It’s basically just a song. You know, you can’t just say they are dramatically different. The songs I write share a lot with Tiesto’s music. We recorded it here in my house in Iceland. I enjoyed it a lot, you know, it was fun. He sent me the samples over the internet. I liked the beats he sent over and we worked on it together.

“My favourite thing in Brighton is the what’s it called? Merry-go-round? On the beach. Yeah, I love that.”

Hoppipola is known throughout the country, it is played in tv shows, films, trailers and even at football matches. Do you think it is a good thing to have one song that has achieved so much success or do you think sometimes it overshadows the other amazing music you have made? And did you know Hoppipola would be so successful? No I never knew it would be so big. But it is a good thing, it’s positive. It’s great to have such a success. How are the rest of Sigur Ros doing? I hear they are beginning to settle down and have children. Do you think this will shape the sound of Sigur Ros in the future? In some ways yes. We will be adding some new things to our songs, but at the moment I am concentrating on my solo stuff and my touring. We will be meeting more next year, writing new songs but not right now. Finally, will we be seeing Alex Somers alongside you for the show in September? I can’t wait to see it. What surprises do you have in store? It’s going to be great music, a great live show. It would be nice if you could all come and see it, it’s going to be like something completely new.

RAMONA

Tuesday 24th August @ The Prince Albert Ramona Single Launch Night

10

SEPTEMBER 2010 WWW.BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK

BRIGHTON’S GOT TALENT. We all know it. We all see it. We all love it. From the buskers to the bright lights of the music venues, there are undeniably a massive number of damn clever musicians circulating around the city. Punk pop band Ramona are having a great summer with T in the Park and Wireless under their festival belts, and recent trips up and down the country to promote new single ‘How Long’ have ensured that they’re certainly being noticed beyond Brighton. It’s always good to get a tip off, so when rumour had it that they were going to be dropping by The Prince Albert, BN1 Magazine was there in a shot. From the first blast through to the last, Ramona effortlessly fired out punchy, passionate numbers. Willowy front-lady Karen Anne’s sumptuous voice flowed alongside gritty guitar riffs mixed in with hints of Blondie and The Clash. Highlights included ‘How Long’ and ‘Steve McQueen’both smart and frighteningly catchy tunes from the first time you hear them. Ending with a nifty cover of Blueboy’s ‘Remember Me’, Ramona demonstrated massive amounts of versatility and charisma throughout their glamorously sassy set. BN1 Magazine caught up with Karen Anne to find out more about Ramona’s past, present and (potentially very exciting) future: When and how did Ramona get together? I grew up in Brighton and then moved to London when I was 17. I was working as a waitress and hanging coats for years, making music along

the way. By the end, I was in a lot of debt and wanted to put a band together, so I moved back to Brighton last year. I met Charlie at a gig down at The Concorde2 and got straight into writing and rehearsing the next week. We met Fred and James through the Brighton music scene. You’ve been compared to Blondie, Texas and The Ramones. How would you describe your music? Three minute pop songs. Long enough to get you on your feet, but not so long that you’ll ever get bored. Are there any particular musicians that have influenced you as a band? Lou Reed’s Transformer album is a favourite of ours, also bands like The Clash and Patti Smith group. They all have great hooks, clever lyrics and passion, a sense of fighting for what you believe, even if it’s against the norm. If you could do a gig anywhere in the world, where would you most like to play? New York. I have always been obsessed with the city and our music is very much inspired by the 70’s New York punk scene. We’ve been asked to play there in September. It’s our first gig outside the UK so we are very lucky! What do you like most about living in Brighton? It’s vibrant. There’re lots of independent cafes, record shops and boutiques and when you walk around this city you can tell that the people have a real love for what they do.

The New Pornographers 9th September – Concorde2

Big Black Box Techno with Dave Clarke, 11th Sept – Concorde2

MV Presents: Fyfe Dangerfield 22nd September – Komedia

Critically acclaimed, Vancouver indie rock eight piece, The New Pornographers should arrive relatively fresh at the Concorde2 having completed only four gigs of a global tour to promote their new album, Together which was released in May this year. The new album clearly draws vocal inspiration from Crosby, Stills Nash and Young with an accomplished ensemble of fairly prolific and previously established Canadian musicians that certainly sound pleasant if not always dreadfully innovative or exciting.

Brighton club staple, Black Box Techno changes the scene of debauchery this month from its electronic breeding ground, The Volks, to the Concorde2 a familiar transition for those that have followed nights like Carbon and Super Dub Pressure in the past. While it may be argued that the intimacy and unpretentious raw filth of The Volks does not naturally translate to the somewhat cleaner, more tight jeans nice hair cut friendly Concorde2, a larger capacity and larger sound-system are likely to evoke the required crowd energy. If that simply isn’t enough, techno baron Dave Clarke has been drafted in to fill the main room alongside Black box residents with In The Face transforming room 2 into a wobbling “bassbin ikea” and mutant junglists, Erisian laying waste to room 3 with hardtek, jungle and technoid drum and bass. Bring the noise.

“Fyfe Anthony Dangerfield Hutchins”. A name to be mocked perhaps. But you may actually remember Fyfe from his appearance on Never Mind the Buzzcocks: Sat next to Bill Bailey and Madge from Neighbours, Fyfe, parodying Preston from the aptly named ‘ordinary boys’ who had stormed out under constant comedy pressure from Siomon Amstell, pretended to strop it up in the same fashion when teased by Amstell. In doing so he revealed the thoroughly good humoured nature that will always elude a tosser like Preston. Appearing originally on Never Mind the Buzzcocks as a member of The Guillemots, more recently Fyfe has been cast into the limelight by a John Lewis commercial which features his cover of the Billy Joel classic, ‘She’s always a women’. An extremely high song writing quality coupled with a delivery so full of genuine ardour that you can’t help but truly believe the man is in love, has seen Fyfe wooing crowds across the UK and ensured that he has already sold out The Komedia a month in advance. Taking the piss out of Preston on national television would probably have been enough to endear Fyfe to the great British public but the quality and honesty of his music should significantly ingratiate him as well.

Doors Open 19:00, ages 14+, Tickets £12.50 in advance + booking fee.

Doors Open 23:00, ages 18+, Tickets £7.50 in advance + booking fee.

Reckless Love 27th September – Concorde2 “Reckless Love” - the name should say it all really - unless of course you had very reasonably assumed that no one was still actually making hard rock as cheesy as cheesiest of Bon Jovi’s farts kept in a jar since 1982, reopened and inhaled orally by an adoring American meathead. However, when this posing, glam-rock inbred gang of Bill and Ted rejects come all the way from Finland to the UK last, they played to a sold out crowd at the Barfly in London so I’ve lost the will to write anymore… just go or something. Doors open 19:00, ages 14+, Tickets £10.00 in advance +booking fee.

PRIDE IN THE PARK 14

SEPTEMBER 2010 WWW.BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK

FLAMBOYANT COSTUMES, pink Union Jacks, uncomfortable trousers, rainbow feathers, pink 8ft Stilettos, huge cameo wigs, glitter balls and all things glamorous! It could only mean one thing. Pride 2010! The streets of Brighton swelled as an estimated 160,000 people converged as Pride and No Prejudice 2010 began its annual parade along Madeira Drive. Charity floats, including Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus, the Gay Police Association (GPA) and a giant wedding cake boogied and waved their way in true carnival style towards Preston Park, cheered on by excited spectators. With the sun still shining the precession came to an end at Preston Park, where the party went into full swing. With a change in sponsors and the introduction of 4 new tents, including a mahoooosive dance tent that was big even for festival standards, meant we were all in for a treat! Having wedged myself into the huge dance tent I rapidly found that this is where you go if you wanted to rub up against other frantic half naked revellers covered in sweat and Bacardi breezers! Once I managed to squeeze my way out of the crowd, undeterred by the incessant sound of Nitrous Oxide going off every five seconds, I went

“...a massive turnout, with stacks of money being raised for a number of great causes!”

to explore the many food vendors on display and was pleasantly surprised by the amount of choice. Now re-fuelled, it was time to trek back into the city centre, stopping off at some of the many bars on the way. Now it was St. James Street’s turn to become centre of the Pride shenanigans with pubs brimming to capacity and parties popping up all over the place. I could see this being an intoxicating late one! We ended up at the Brighton Rocks bar, where everyone was in high spirits and a street party had formed. I’m sure I heard the word ketamine and poppers in every nearby conversation...just one small detail! In true Pride character, the music was pumping out hard house with everyone thoroughly entertained and engaging in various acts of debauchery. The only negative was the issue of the aftermath clear up of discarded drinks, wrappers and not forgetting those poppers bottles, which could have been dealt with far better. Overall it was a very successful event, featuring a massive turnout, with stacks of money being raised for a number of great causes! See you next year! By Jeffrey Jefferson

MOODY BLUES AMONGST THE MULTITUDE OF EXCITING EVENTS coursing through our September...we’re lucky enough to be welcoming a psychedelic, progressive, symphonic British rock band to our shores, who have sold in excess of 70 million albums and 14 platinum discs... Yes, it’s the perennially underrated Moody Blues who have come to play the Brighton Centre on the 7th September. BN1 disturbed bassist and vocalist, John Lodge, at his home in the South of France to find out about woodwork, The Simpsons and Christianity... BN1: Hi John, you’ve just finished your US tour, how did it go? John Lodge: Well it’s been a fabulous year. We actually went to Canada in the summer which was really different, playing the Montreal Jazz Festival and the Ottawa Jazz festival. So nice to be playing those types of events. Are you looking forward to the UK leg? Very much so, I always do. I’m English so I look forward to playing at home. It’s really important. Sometimes when you’re on tour so much, you forget where your roots are, so it’s always nice to get back home. Have you spent a lot of time in Brighton before? What are your impressions? Well I’ve lived in Cobham since 1969 so it’s always been pretty close. To be honest, Brighton has been an integral part of my life and I used to get down there regularly – I’ve seen the piers come and go! There’s always been a fantastic atmosphere in Brighton. Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys is a good friend of mine, and we talked a lot about doing a

16

SEPTEMBER 2010 WWW.BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK

gig on the beach – the Moody Blues and the Beach Boys – unfortunately we just never got round to it. It has a certain aura which has existed all through the decades really. Plus there are some great fish restaurants! (I must admit a pause for thought here about a Beach Boys / Moody Blues gig on the beach.......now THAT would be amazing!) So, John Lodge, musician and bassist extraordinaire. You were moved from music classes to woodwork by your teacher – do you worry about careers advice in the English education system!? Haha, well I was awful at woodwork – I could so easily have chopped my fingers off! It was a clash of cultures really, I was really into the rock and roll culture, taking my guitar to school every day and listening to Buddy Holly. I just wasn’t getting that from my music class, and couldn’t understand the relevance of where someone was born or what date it was (John was kicked out for not knowing where / when Bach was born) I was just more interested in the music itself.

“Brighton has been an integral part of my life and I used to get down there regularly – I’ve seen the piers come and go! There’s always been a fantastic atmosphere in Brighton.”

You formed the Moody Blues in 1964 but then left to go to college – how did you end up coming back in to the fold? Well I went to Aston College in Birmingham to study engineering – I always wanted to be a car designer – I was constantly scribbling drawings of cars. When I finished at school I started my mechanical engineering course and had a year to do at college when the Moody Blues formed. I just wanted to finish the course. Then in the summer of ’66, Ray called

and said “have you finished yet? Come back!” and the rest, as they say, is history. What do you think the watershed moment for the band was? Well there was a few – the first one was when we went to a little village in Belgium called Mouscron to learn, write and play. There were a few clubs in the region and we’d play for 30 minutes or so in these clubs just to see how the songs went down. Whilst we were there we got a call from Colin Berlin in London who wanted to know how many songs we knew and could play. It turned out Tom Jones was playing the Olympia in Paris and we ended up being thrust on stage, second on the bill! The next one was at the MIDEM conference in Cannes. There was a live Eurovision gig and the second act wasn’t ready to play so we just jumped on stage and played Nights in White Satin. The following week it was number one in France and stayed there! One of your boldest moves was the rock & roll reworking of a classical album on Days of Future Past – that must have been some undertaking. Would you look at doing the like again? Any challenge musically is great. The music industry today doesn’t really seem to know where it’s going so it’s difficult to get excited about making a record at the moment. Musically I’d love to do it again, but

we’re concentrating on touring and the live show in the main right now until things become clearer.

“That’s one of the wonderful things about music – doors open for you that you would never have dreamt of!”

Many will know the Moody Blues from the track Nights In White Satin but you’ve sold in excess of seventy million albums and have 14 platinum and gold discs. What period or piece of music are you most proud of? I don’t know really. It’s impossible to say. If I was analysing it I’d say Days of Future Past as it was the first. Next would be Seventh Sojourn as it was such a big album and hit number 1 and I love that album. Long Distance Voyager came out in ‘79/’80 which was the height of punk so we really wondered if anyone would be interested, but it was an incredible success so that would be up there too. Surely appearing on The Simpsons is the pinnacle of your career? Oh yes, that’s the pinnacle for sure! The height of our career! You know, we had such a great time doing that. That’s one of the wonderful things about music – doors open for you that you would never have dreamt of!

Is there anything you look back on and thing “ugh, I wish we hadn’t done that”? I don’t think so. When you go and record something you hope it’s the best it can be. We wouldn’t put anything out that we weren’t proud of. When we re-released things digitally we weren’t keen on any of the tracks that didn’t make it being released as “extras”. If it didn’t go out in the first place, it didn’t deserve to go out. You claim that your faith kept you away from the worst of rock n’ roll excess. Can you tell us a little about it? Well religion and Christianity are more a way of life for me to be honest. When I grew up in Birmingham I used to go to a little evangelical church entirely of my own volition. It’s still there, a tiny little place. It has never been so much about religion as I say; it’s more a way of living life. It gave me an inner strength and taught me a lot, especially that I wanted to be a musician and that to do that I should go to be the best I could. If you get involved in all the other stuff, then that takes away from that goal and what you’re trying to do.

the active electronics and I changed the pick-guard to tortoiseshell and with a dotted fretboard! Brighton is quite a hive of creativity and we’ve many great bands and aspiring musicians here – what advice would you give people? Well it rather depends – if you’re a beginner, LEARN RHYTHM! It’s just the most important thing. You find that rhythm within your body. Keith Richards is an aficionado of it. He writes such great riffs, but it all comes from his sense of rhythm. You can play bass with four strings up to a twelve string guitar, but all you’re doing is increasing the harmonics. Rhythm is still the key. Then learn the chords, the six most important, and master them.

“The great music people just loved talking about music and I really hope that it comes back. Music is such a beautiful thing. It really is.”

What are you listening to currently? Jeff Beck’s new album in the main – it’s really interesting. It fuses blues and classical music and he’s just on another level with his playing. What’s the biggest crime these days to music – piracy or the X Factor? Haha, they’re both pretty bad! When we started, music was about music people. Today it seems to be all about accountants and lawyers. The great music people just loved talking about music and I really hope that it comes back. Music is such a beautiful thing. It really is. And on that note we bade John goodbye and wished him luck on the tour. Tickets are still available for the show and we can’t recommend it highly enough. Great music, and a thoroughly lovely guy to boot! More next month from your roving reporters. And for the technically minded, Precision or Jazz Bass? Well the very first bass I had and the one I recorded everything on was a 1960 sunburst Fender Precision, three tone bass. It was the very first one in Birmingham and I saw it in this shop window and just fell in love! I was 17 years old and bought it from this shop, Jack Woodruffs, on hire purchase. Finding an amp was difficult though, so I built my own. On stage though, I needed an active bass so I bought a Jazz Bass. It was a copy of a 1960 Jazz Bass but with all

MARK HAMILTON, FRONT MAN OF INDIE ROCK COLLECTIVE WOODPIGEON, from Canada, is making his solo appearance at Jam on September 14th. With lyrical influences from the Kinks and their sound compared to the likes of Camera Obscura, Grizzly Bear and Belle and Sebastian, expect folkpop, melodic harmonies that slowly crescendo to an epic climax! Having opened for bands such as Broken Social Scene and The Dears, we thought it best to investigate this best kept secret! The music you create has a very soothing feel to it, what lead you to create your chilled out sound in terms of your personalities and influences etc? How does the lyrical content of your songs generally relate to this sound? From the outset I was quite inspired by the idea of sad lyrics coupled with the prettiest of pop hooks. I think the greatest pop songs are usually the saddest ones — but sung with a resigned smile. I guess that in terms of playing music with low volume, I’m also in love with the idea of hearing fingers squeaking across guitar strings and letting instruments really speak for themselves. (That said, the music I’m working on at the moment, is turning out quite a bit different with some experimentation with different effects ...!)

“It’s the math of the forest, and there’s little else quite so inspiring as a forest!” I imagine your music would be perfect to listen to on Brighton beach around sunset, have you been to the area before, and if not, do you know much about the Brighton scene? I lived in Brighton for nearly a year, and worked as the coat check at Envy / St. Charles on the seafront. I lived with the members of Shrag and had a great time. Most evenings were spent on the beach. (More specifically, I was a true HOVE lover through-andthrough.) I’m also a film studies major at university here in Canada (just graduated!) and Brighton was quite exciting for me as some of the first public cinemas and film studios were based in Brighton. There’s a fish restaurant on the seafront that was the first cinema there, and St. Ann’s Wells was where one of the first film studios was based.

Your tour is taking you around various parts of Europe, where in particular are you looking forward to playing? My Mother was born in Vienna and there’s still some family there I’ve never met. I’m so excited to play there (and thankfully it’s also the one city where I’ve got a free day off to further explore). I’ve read that your band has eight ‘core’ members, has the eight remained quite stable during the band’s lifetime or have there been many changes in the line-up? The line-up has changed intensely over the years. I suppose that by ‘core’ that was an earlier reference to the folks who made the records with me here in Calgary. But even that is changing. For this tour, for example, I’m coming to Brighton solo! (Although, potentially a Scottish band by the name of Eagleowl is backing me up at a couple of shows ... For all intensive purposes, however, this is my first Brighton solo show). The band is described more as a ‘collective’ and the members play with a number of other bands. How does the band member’s involvement with other groups affect Woodpigeon’s creative output? Over 60 people have played in this ‘collective’ already, so a full answer to that question would be pretty layered! The way Woodpigeon works is that I’ll make things and other folks will come by and play a little piano or sing a little harmony. I’ll do the same on their projects and we all help one another out. I think that initially defining things as a “band” was a bit of a misnomer, because we’ve typically always just been a group of friends making things with one another, inspired and driven by individuals.

MARK HAMILTON The band was originally called ‘Woodpigeon Divided By Antelope Equals Squirrel’, what inspired such a name? It’s the math of the forest, and there’s little else quite so inspiring as a forest! Where would you say the band is ‘at’ now in terms of success and the music you are making? Where do you hope to be in the next few years? This music is taking me around the world and introducing me to heroes and interesting people. That’s all I’ve ever wanted out of this — as someone who makes music in his bedroom in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, just the fact that someone in Brighton is interested in what I’m doing is an extreme joy. For those who have never heard of Woodpigeon, could you describe yourselves in a few sentences? I’m a big burly bearded fellow who can sing like a wee choir boy. The songs are about drowning, animals, and gay sex. There is no greater joy in life than a seaside romance — line up, Brighton. By Jen Blakeley
