EDITOR'S MESSAGE: Hey! Or if you’ve just landed in Brighton & Hove with the dewy-eyed dream of attending university, WELCOME! Higher Education brings with it many responsibilities – like laundering clothes so you remain a hot prospect for potential sexual partners, or not spending your entire loan on two bottles of champagne in a club. It also brings options, such as the chance to wake entire streets with hilarious, high-volume, conversations about a fit guy in the bar, or which daytime TV show to become increasingly obsessed with. Enjoy this while you can. As you take these unsteady steps towards becoming a well-rounded member of society, pause for moment, and reflect on that feeling of impending doom. This sensation only multiplies as the year’s cascade past, until your life is all-consumed with bills, worries, unruly kids, and self-hatred. Or maybe not. Don’t take life too seriously. There’s plenty happening across the city to distract you from dull constructs like reality or the crushing certainty of eventual oblivion. Smile. Laugh. Enjoy. Screw tomorrow, we’re all heading out tonight…

This month, Preston Park will be home to the biggest inflatable obstacle course our city has ever seen. The superhero-themed race will be a gigantic, foam-filled 5k challenge for you to bounce over, squeeze through, slip and slide around. Dodge the high-velocity foam cannons, sprint through the UV bubble pod, scale the whopping heights of Beecher’s Brook and get lost in the foam maze. Kapow will raise money for Martlets Hospice, and if you do decide to raise sponsorship money, every penny will help them provide lifechanging hospice care. Antonia Shepherd, of the hospice’s fundraising team, said: “This is going to be a popular event and we think tickets will go fast, so it’s worth booking now to ensure that you have a place. If you buy your tickets for before 30th June you’ll get an early bird discount.” Early bird tickets cost £25 for over 16s, £10 for children and £65 for a family of four. Children must be accompanied by adults and all entrants must be over 1.2m tall.

STUDENT Fun-filled Freshers That four month long summer is officially over and it’s time to get back to business in the studying department… Or at least kid ourselves that, while we get trashed for the freshers fortnight which will definitely develop into months of heavy drinking, making memories and living it up like a true fresher. For those just starting and moving to Brighton - Welcome! Freshers is always going to be nerve-wracking but hold on in there, it gets a whole lot easier! You may have to adjust significantly to your new lifestyle but after a week, you’ll be up all night partying, and watching Netflix in bed all day with a takeaway pizza, regretting your decisions from the night before…
British Science Festival 2017, one of Europe’s leading and longestestablished science festivals will be co-hosted this year by the University of Brighton and the University of Sussex. Among over 100 free events include talks, debates, workshops and performances about innovative science from world-leading academics.
If Brighton wasn’t your first choice or you’ve come through clearing, then don’t threat. Brighton is the best place to be - it’s filled with fun, vibrance and colour all over the city. And trust me, the nightlife is nextlevel! There’s something for anyone and everyone, no doubt what you’re into. Give it a chance, because once you’ve moved to Brighton, you won’t want to move out again.
Professor Michael Davies, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research at the University of Sussex, said: "We are thrilled to welcome the festival back to our city. Many staff still connected to the University of Sussex remember fondly the impact of the event when we hosted it back in 1983. The ethos of scientific teaching, learning and research at Sussex hasn’t changed since then – we are as passionate today about cutting-edge innovation that spans across the boundaries of traditional academic disciplines to address themes, such as neuroscience, digital humanities and sustainability.
And of course, for those returning, let’s not try and pretend we won’t be getting the freshers wristband and heading down to all the free events like we have done previous years, because at the end of the day, who doesn’t want to relive freshers three years running anyway?!
Collaboration sits at the heart of our approach to scientific discovery and impact through combining disciplines, working with a wide range of partners and most importantly engaging and encouraging brilliant minds to be involved.”
Whatever year you are and whatever your vibe is, freshers is always a whole lot of fun so start this year with a bang. The world is your oyster when you’re a student, so why not enjoy it while you’re still young?
British Science Festival Tue 5 - Sat 9 Sept www.britishsciencefestival.org
First held (as the inaugural and then annual meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science) in 1831, the Festival has been the stage for many iconic moments in history - such as the famous debate on Darwin’s then controversial theory of evolution between Thomas Huxley and the Bishop of Oxford in 1860.

VIDEO NASTY
BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK
"Sorry Bro" Vlogging, blogging, youtubing, you name it, is an ever-expanding industry and growing into a whole new craze and phenomena. Former Vine star and now Facebook, Youtube and internet sensation, Ben Phillips began making videos through simple pranks on his brother, Elliot. With his live cinematic experience coming to the Brighton Dome, we grabbed the opportunity to interview him and see how his pranks operate. What begun as some personal humour, quickly became popular online, with over 1000 of his video pranks online, enabling Ben’s following to grow into its millions. His Facebook page is now the fastest growing in the UK, just shy of 9 million subscribers. It seems like a typical day for Ben Philips, the moment I reach him for an interview he's already working on his next prank for Elliot. "I'm currently buying 1000 pizza boxes,” Ben says, "I'm trying to find a dominos worker who I can tip 50 quid to deliver 1000 pizzas to Elliot’s door.” The pranks seem to start early for a day in the life of an internet Prankster. Unsure whether or not he achieved this, I hop over to his Youtube channel to see how the prank turned out… Let’s just say, Elliot was his usual angry self when the issue arose. Ben’s rise to internet fame started one day with his father showing him a prank online which he decided to recreate on his brother and upload it online. “Elliot’s always been an angry person,” he tells me, so from then on he begun continually pranking his brother and uploading online, where things quickly escalated due to huge popularity online. Starting on Vine, having to tell a story in 6 seconds his following increased at phenomenal speed. It’s often argued whether or not his pranks are staged and Elliot’s reaction are all just for views. After being born and raised in a small town, Bridgend in Wales, the whole internet fame still feels like a surreal world for him, as he says, “we are just two bro’s from Wales.” Growing up and coming from a close nit family, like all Welsh families, everyone from the town all know the two brothers and their fame and respect that, letting them go on about their daily life. It’s not until “you go over the mighty bridge,” that “everyones running after your car and taking photos.” The pressure can seem to be on them as “that figure on the internet, its not just a figure of pixels, its a figure of people who've had to take the time to watch the video and hit the follow button,” becomes a reality and the fame begins to sink in. Ben goes onto saying that on average around 30-40 fans are waiting outside his office daily, fans leave notes on his car and often wait outside his house also.

I asked if any of his pranks have ever gone massively wrong or simply not been aired, and he replied with many of times things go wrong, yet he’s aired every single one possible uploading around 1000 pranks to date. The majority of the pranks go onto poor brother, Elliot, where it appears to sometimes go past brotherly banter, to at times pushing the boundaries to possible bullying, yet he gets away with it through humour. His latest series however, focuses on his ‘haters’. The series is called Prank the Haters where so far he’s pranked three of his haters. The first in the series being on a guy named Roy who left a hate comment Twitter for the world to see… Ben retaliated with a meteor prank named “I **PRANKED!** MY BIGGEST HATER! (REVENGE).” The prank consisting of him creating a meteor crashing onto ‘Roy’s car’ and his brother Elliot coming out in an Alien costume and scaring Roy as revenge. Roy’s reaction was priceless, with his wife also revealing some interesting things about their relationship. The prank has hit nearly 1.5 million views on Youtube to date. With his live show coming to the Brighton Dome at the end of the month, I asked what his fans could expect from it. "It's a crazy 4D almost virtual reality, a movie full of pranks that have never been seen before, "the biggest of the biggest,” Ben tells me, with the audience being sprayed by water, explosions and wind. It seems like it will include a great amount of audience participation by just being there. Also, there are tickets available for a Post-show meet and greet, offering a chance to meet the two boys personally. They will sign your merchandise, give you a little gift and you can get high res pictures taken which will go onto their website, allowing fans to download their images. Blogging, Vlogging and Youtubing is rapidly increasing as a way of getting your name in lights and a step onto the fame ladder. With fans loving the real-life experiences and down to earth internet personalities online. Ben’s advice to budding vloggers and bloggers is straight forward. “I started on vine, I had to tell a story in 6 seconds,” Ben tells me. Whatever the story or subject matter you want to express, explore and upload needs to be something you’re truly passionate about and interested in, as Ben believes “energy is the key to vlogging.”

SNAP, CRACKLE & POP
BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK
ANTEROS By Stuart Rolt
As Laura Hayden knows, getting recognised is one way to have your father take a flourishing music career seriously. “I took him to Hyde Park, and someone walked up to me and said: ‘You’re the girl from Anteros.’ My dad was like: ‘What the fuck is going on?’ I jokingly told him that I’d paid the guy £2… AND he didn’t believe me, which was nice!” By her own admission, it doesn’t happen often, but it is a sign all the hard work is starting to pay off for her band. Anteros have had a relatively brief existence, forming only a couple of years ago. With scores of live shows and a plethora of spiky pop tunes they’re now forcing their way to the centre of the British alternative scene. Although the band are gaining momentum, it always feels slower when you’re in the middle of it all. Only she, bassist Josh Rumble, guitarist Jackson Couzens and drummer Harry Balazs know how much time and energy has been put into getting this far. “There’s certainly a nice vibe at gigs now. People showing up and singing your songs back to you - there’s something we hadn’t had until about two months ago.” The popularity has come from grinding out tours, along with a few choice festival shows – like two years in a row at Brighton’s The Great Escape and opening the Other Stage at this year’s Glastonbury. In certain respects, they’ve been thrown in at the deep end, playing supports for wellestablished bands like Two Door Cinema Club and White Lies. But the four are fast learners, and still enamoured with the rigours of rattling across the country in a tiny van. “I think you’ve got to enjoy all aspects of it – from the writing and recording to promo and pretty much all of it. If you’re lucky to be able to do this for a living, then you’ve got to embrace all aspects of it – even sharing a room.” The touring has also enabled an on-the-job finessing of Anteros’ sound. Since the release of their sugar-sweet Breakfast EP, the songs have progressively grown more pointed and self-assured. At home on the grimmest of sweat-stained indie disco dancefloors or the largest festival stages, this London quartet have a fresh and enduring take on upbeat guitarpop. “When we go in the studio, I want to make music that I can perform 15 years from now. I’ve waited a long time for this. We just want to make it fun.” April saw the release of a vibrant third EP, Drunk, which offered another selection of tunes to enjoy life to. There’s still plenty of room to experiment in their bouncing and bittersweet dream pop.
The band are reluctant to settle into a pigeonhole. “People are usually in such a hurry to go: ‘What are you?’ People always want to put a finger on the music you’re making. You shouldn’t want it to be the same and fit in a box. I don’t want to fit in a box.” Songs concern themselves with the everyday, like awkward relationships, elation, and angst – but it’s all open to interpretation. “Sometimes you can say things without saying them. I like to think that people can take it a song and make it about a girl, or make it about their parents or job. What we write about is being twenty and turning to find your place in life.” She knows her generation have had a very different upbringing to their parents, but everyone continues to learn about the world and themselves. “I just want people to find they can connect with our music and find a place for them.” The future for Anteros holds an eventual release of a debut album, another EP in October and a headline tour zooming around the country – including a date at Brighton’s Komedia on Mon 25 Sept. The mission is to squeeze as much writing, performing, and recording into the approaching months as they can. “The good thing is to be busy, and know that you’re working towards something every day.” It’s already a long way from haphazardly cramming all their gear in a Fiat Panda and heading out to play, but those experiences have taught Hayden to appreciate the life she leads. There’s an admission that women in her industry are too often compared to each other – and therefore a constant pressure to compete. She’s quick to side-step these expectations and concentrate on trying to connect and remain true to herself. The band are meeting a lot of their peers out on the road. This can be slightly odd or funny if everyone is putting up a pretence. An artist’s music can present a perception some feel the need to live up to. “You can’t be doing this to be cool,” she says, “You have to be doing it because you really, really want to. There’s no other way to it. The second that barrier comes down and everyone accepts how weird everyone is, it’s beautiful.” Anteros play Brighton’s Komedia on Mon 25 Sept www.anterosofficial.com www.komedia.co.uk/brighton

THE GREAT ESCAPE FESTIVAL Festivals have become a huge part of our culture; the excitement, the music and of course the boozing, being something that a large part of the population can't get enough of. Lots of festivals have their own unique selling point about them, especially so for The Great Escape. The three day festival differs from so many other festivals in that music acts are scattered across the city of Brighton at different venues. So, no fields involved, unfortunately... The festival is all about giving budding artists a chance not only to share their music, but for them to get wider recognition, recruit new fans and even for the chance to get signed. Its also an opportunity for festival goers to experience new sounds, as well as seeing artists in an intimate setting before they make it big. The Great Escape showcases around 450 artists each year, as well as running conventions alongside the music featuring insightful panels, debates and speeches and chances for those interested or involved in the music industry to network. TGE hosts secret gigs too, for that added novelty of being immersed in a musical experience. It doesn't end there, the festival also hosts the Alternative Escape, for bands who really are just starting out, and Spotlight Shows, for artists who have already got their name out there. Stormzy, Slaves, Clean Bandit and Royal Blood are just a few big names that have taken part in one of Brighton's most exclusive festival. As festivals go, The Great Escape is a not-to-miss festival, providing the music world and music lovers something to really feast on. BN1 are giving a lucky reader the chance to win TWO weekend tickets to attend TGE 2018. All you have to do is answer the following question... What sort of festival is The Great Escape?

HOW TO BLOW YOUR STUDENT LOAN SHOPPING If you’re part of the 99%, or just a general mess, it’s likely you’ve never witnessed four figures in your bank account, like, ever. So naturally, forgetting the trivial stuff like, you know, food and rent and bills, you go out, shop ‘til you drop and splurge it all. You sign up for Amazon Prime and spend £80 on matching Super Mario outfits for you and your best mate to wear to the first of many themed freshers parties, just because you can, right? You’re not going to be one of those students who lives on 21p instant noodles and frozen potato smiley faces from Lidl, oh no. You ain’t about that life. You’ve got this. GOING OUT ON WEEKENDS You’ve been out every single night this week. The entry was cheap, the drinks were on offer, and you’ve barely touched your loan. Friday night rolls round and you’re back on form and ready to do it all again. So you stroll up to the bar and order your usual £2 double vodka lemonade. ‘That’ll be £6.80 please,’ the barman says. Your stomach drops as you return the change to your pocket and reluctantly hand your card over. You’ll worry about it in the morning... SHOTS, SHOTS, AND MORE SHOTS When you’re out in the club and the Jägerbombs are 3-4-2, let’s be honest, you’re not going to ignore an offer like that. How about a round for all your mates? How about a round for all your mates’ mates? It does make a welcome change from your disastrously cheap pre-drinks choice of Tesco Value vodka mixed with squash, but when you check your bank balance in the morning you’re going to be regretting your overenthusiastic drunken choices. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
By Henna Malik
CABS Don’t kid yourself that you’re sober enough to walk home by yourself - you’re not. Uber is easy and you’re not capable of deciding otherwise. You’ve already had to stop at the cashpoint (after spending your cab fare on WKDs for the way home), then at the off-licence to grab some more booze and a bag of Doritos to drunkenly devour in bed, and you’re on your way home at last. Just pray your drinking partner doesn’t throw up in the backseat. TAKEAWAYS Oh, the hangover - it’s always the same. You wake up, you feel great, the sun is shining - you’ve got this! But then, like a ton of bricks, the splitting headache sets in. Your stomach gurgles ominously. Fast forward to half an hour later and you’ve thrown up twice, you’re back in bed and you’re squinting at the Deliveroo website with one eye closed because the sunlight hurts too much. Face it, you’re not going anywhere today. Which leads us to... NETFLIX ‘It’s only £7.99 a month!’ you tell your mates nonchalantly as you boast about watching an entire season of The Office all in one day. Well done you. But it all adds up, and when you’re laying in bed wallowing in self-pity in the same clothes you went out in, stinking of Sambuca with an extra large pizza on your lap, all you want is a Breaking Bad marathon, a cup of tea and and a hug from your mum. We’ve all been there. STUDENT ACCOMMODATION Why is there a hole in the door? Who put a shoe in the toilet? What’s that weird stain on the carpet? Has the washing machine always made that noise? Does anyone even know how to use it yet? No one bothered to read the housing contract, so by the end of the year you’re going to have to shell out for all those nights of drunken debauchery - and it won’t be pretty. But we never learn...

It also offers student takeaway coffee deals on Americano’s and filtered coffee for £1.50 if you’re in a rush but want a pick-me-up. Another great location, is ‘Pheonix Coffee House’. This newly opened coffeehouse offers a range of light-bites and coffee’s and complies to a great work environment with its simple wooden decor and clear tables allowing you to spread out your workbooks as much as you desire. For those living in Kemptown, head down to ‘Twin Pines’ on St. James Street. This year old coffeeshop offers a quaint comfy vibe with its 20th century retro decor and great coffee. A great place to catch up with friends with its secluded seating areas. Another gem in Kemptown is ‘Redroaster'. During the day, it offers delicately hand-roasted coffee in a pristine botanical decoration. Although on the slightly pricier side for us students, it’s a lovely atmosphere for when you feel like treating yourself. If you’re headed towards Hove area, try out ‘CoffeFix’, located on Western Road. Upon arriving outside, it’s easy to see what you are in for as it’s plastered with signs stating everything is £1. It’s daringly obvious it will suit any student whether you’re a lover of coffee or not, as all the devilish treats are £1 too! It’s the perfect place for a cheap study spot, or catch up with some skint pals. For the vegan folk in Hove area, ‘Green Kitchen Cafe’ on Preston Road, is one to head towards. Filling all your healthy alternatives to naughty treats as well as offering great coffees, it’s a great place to cure a hangover without the guilt of ending up at a greasy cafe. It’s also on Deliveroo Thursday to Saturday until 10pm. If you’re based in Grand Parade, then the world truly is your oyster when it comes to coffehouses. ‘Lost in the Lanes’ situated on Nile Street, is a newly opened cafe offering early brekkies, all-day brunches and afternoon tea, all healthy and offering great vegan options too. Another authentic and favourite amongst many in Brighton is ‘Marwoods’. For all your quirky and chaotic desires, Marwoods’ fits all the needs. Filled with all things wacky and wonderful, it’s a great space to get immersed in the atmosphere and watch the world go by or get your head down and essay writing inside or in the garden. And after a long hard day, you can stay for cocktails and live the night away as it’s open until 11pm Tuesday-Saturday. Up Queens Park area, is a new-upcoming independently run coffeehouse ‘Starfish and Coffee’. Open until early afternoon, it offers a great space to delve into your assignments and weekly readings without feeling
pressured to leave with its comforting, homely atmosphere. Also offering some great breakfast and brunch delights to tantalise your tastebuds, leaving you energised to power through never-ending assignments. Not forgetting those living on the Lewes Road and the surrounding, there are a few options to choose from. Our personal favourite is ‘Brewed’, although small, it has a great range of tasty healthy treats of both meat and veggie dishes. The chilled out atmosphere is increased by the friendly baristas. Or if all else fails, head to ‘The Hive’ at Falmer campus for a mixture of coffee and foodie treats, with the chilled out environment of fellow students working away amongst each other in-between lectures.

When the hustle and bustle of freshers is over and the reality of deadlines comes spiralling in, finding somewhere you feel comfortable to get your head down and crack on with assignments is essential to student survival. Coffee shops offer both a great work environment to get the ball rolling, as well as a nice way to catch up with friends over a bite to eat and hot beverage. There’s honestly so many options all over the city so we’ve whittled it down to some of our favourite hotspots with some essential low-downs on whats on offer.

CON CLUB, LEWES
BRIGHTON OPEN AIR THEATRE
The mighty Band of Horses return to the DLWP with some new music from their acclaimed fifth studio album, Why Are You Ok, in an exclusive UK venue gig! Beginning with their first LP, Everything All The Time, the group have been a mainstay of indie rock for a decade – recording four studio albums in total, including 2010’s Grammy-nominated Infinite Arms and Mirage Rock produced by the legendary Glyn Johns. Formed and led by singer and songwriter Ben Bridwell, the South Carolina-based band have also given us many much-loved singles, including The Funeral and No One’s Gonna Love You, and have played globe-spanning headline tours as well as dates with musical greats like Pearl Jam and Neil Young.
New single, Jupiter, sees Roddy Woomble and his band in a surreal and playful mood, channelling both solo McCartney and Pavement in a quirky, melodic, and memorable pop song. It follows on from the brooding, atmospheric Like Caruso single released back in March, and showcases the diversity of his upcoming and highly anticipated fourth solo album, The Deluder. Woomble, who also fronts Scottish indie rock band Idlewild, already has eight acclaimed albums and three compilations under his belt. They have released twelve UK top 40 singles and toured throughout the world as a headline act, and also as support to REM, U2, Pearl Jam and The Rolling Stones amongst many others.
One of the most exciting and energetic concepts around, The Salts perform a mixture of traditional sea shanties intermixed with their own original songs. This unique style has won them droves of fans and taken them to festivals, venues, tall ship regattas and pirate events throughout the UK.

The band’s Tales of the City EP did some tidy business during the summer for vocalist, songwriter and producer Rod Thomas – also known as Bright Light Bright Light. Its title was taken from a seminal Armistead Maupin series, and chronicles, in part, Thomas’ move from London to New York. The EP serves as a companion piece to Bright Light Bright Light’s acclaimed 2016 release Choreography, and features that album’s stand-out track Into The Night, as well as new tune Thinking About It. This wondrous DIY electro-pop project hits the UK roads this September, showing everyone how you keep it retro without bowing to clichés. There should be a place in everyone’s hearts for colourful ‘80s-inspired melodic brilliance like this.

Brighton-based Cory Flynn is an enormously talented young singer-songwriter and musician. His songs give an edge to folk, country, and blues in a style heavily influenced by Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and Hank Williams. He produces a driving rhythm and flatpicking style on his guitar, with a bluesy approach to piano.
Flyte released their highly anticipated debut album, (The Loved Ones), last month. In the school of Grizzly Bear, Alt-J, and Fleet Foxes, it uses their four voices to guide their sound. It swerves any use of crashing cymbals and layers of electric guitars in favour of a more crafted, carefully constructed approach. Lead singer Will Taylor’s style of lyric writing weaves threads of George Orwell and Evelyn Waugh with Nick Drake and Ray Davies, tapping into the English malaise and comingof-age nostalgia like so many writers before him.Accomplished songwriters who quickly earned a reputation for their trademark arrangements and fierce live shows, Flyte released a flurry of alternative singles before pairing up with Courtney Barnett producer Burke Reid to create their stunning first fulllength record.
Cory’s songs tell stories in a very original way, displaying an insight, intellect, and humour far beyond his years, and as a result he’s attracted major praise for his inventive use of language. Remarkably, Cory has already been playing live for nearly six years, both solo and in bands, at clubs and festivals locally around Sussex.

Phil Rudd powered the legendary AC/DC to superstardom with his dogged consistency and unshakeable backbeat, and has since become an indelible part of rock history. After playing on all but three of AC/DC’s 18 studio albums the veteran musician now takes his solo project on the road. During 2014 he recorded and released his excellent debut album Head Job alongside Kiwi musicians Allan Badger and Geoffrey Martin. However, the promotion plans for the album were scuppered by Rudd’s wellpublicised legal problems, but he’s now determined to put his destructive behaviour behind him. Rudd has now turned a corner and completely dedicated himself to the more important things in his life - family, friends and music.

Since releasing their new album (Lovely Little Lonely) in April, The Maine have been touring non-stop. It’s a good thing too. Since their last album, (American Candy), the band disappeared almost completely. Now they’ve finally resurfaced with a work which fuses American rock with a melodic edge. It’s agreeably accessible, but knows when it wants to shake its hair. It’s easy to see them filling huge venues with songs like these. It’s a step away from their alternative roots, but The Maine’s most faithful fans will find plenty to love in the new material, as will those only recently catching on to their majesty. If you’re looking for a solid rock act with an ear for fantastic tunes, this is your first stop.

Brighton-based Pete Howells is a singer/ songwriter trading in lovely, lyric-driven folk-rock with Latin and acoustic blues influences. Originally from Hartlepool, he’s toured the UK extensively, playing folk clubs, colleges, and concert halls with his various bands - most notably, Household Names and World Service. His 1974 debut, Ode, is one of the earliest in psychedelic folk and is now a valuable collector’s item. Playing music since he was five years old, he learned to play the guitar at the age of ten and began to play in coffee bars and folk clubs from 16. In fact, he’s never stopped playing and writing songs. Now, the new Dead Cat Bounce album represents a culmination of tunes and ideas he has been trying out for the past few years.
This British electronic music producer has become renowned for assembling beautifully intense, sparse, textural music. He combines aggressive, organic, and electronic percussion, fuzzy synth leads and post-rock driven guitar to create a wonderful palette of atmospherics, distinct and authentic compositions, and broad soundscapes.
The last couple of years have provided an intense and sometimes painful period of growth for Moore. It’s an experience which she documents now with unflinching openness on the We Used to Bloom album. Its ten songs reveal someone figuring out the world and their place in it, while also charting Moore’s evolving relationship with herself.
From the outer reaches of minimalism with his Moving Dawn Orchestra project to the mellower, jazzier fringes with iambic, Andrews is an explorer at heart. He’s recently started pulling together all of the wilfully disparate themes from his sideprojects and enthused them with a bold cinematic voice. Space invaders may come and go, but this one will have you begging to be let aboard the mothership.
This fearless attitude to tackling tough topics only highlights her exceptional lyrical talents. Moore is certainly a complicated artist, capable of being vulnerable and assertive, outspoken and withdrawn, or angry and loving all at the same time. This is an artist who is growing, and realising there’s more life to experience yet - and we want to hear all about it. to hear all about it.

It follows their epic set at 2000trees Festival and a recent sold out headline show at London’s The Social. Brighton Dome’s celebration of the city’s vibrant and diverse music scene presents a Brighton Digital Festival special. It’s curated by Lara Rix-Martin of Objects Limited, a record label releasing music by those who identify as female or nonbinary. She headlines as Meemo Comma, offering a stripped back, dreamlike and evocative sound, with elements of footwork, instrumental grime and drone. Joining her is Drill Folly, a Melbourne-born artist that combines machinery and emotion – realised through found sound, synthesis and studio manipulation. Completing the line-up is Ingrid Plum, who uses her voice to produce layered soundscapes, spoken word and songs. She creates work which sits between sound art, improvisation, and multi-media installation.
Influenced by the likes of Ray Charles, Kendrick Lamar and Amy Winehouse, Tom Grennan continues to mark the release of his EP, Release The Breaks, with a headline show at The Old Market. The release of For a Moment, I Was Lost last February signalled a new chapter for Amber Run. Their hugely successful debut album 5am smashed into charts across the planet back in 2015. A year later, and they’ve been dropped by their label, not to mention now being a member short. So, there seemed to be slim chances of a follow-up ever emerging. Yet here it is, and it truly demonstrates the music the band really wants you to hear. As a result, it’s vibrant, exciting and utterly original. Free from major label interference they’ve become more powerful, experimental, and compelling. Surviving to tell the tale of a music industry that spits you out if you don’t conform, theirs is a tale of perseverance and reinvention. And rock music is better for it.
British electronic band Blancmange originally broke through in the early ‘80s, unleashing an exotic mix of synthesisers and surrealism. This was fused in groundbreaking singles such as (Feel Me), (Living On The Ceiling), (Blind Vision) and (Don't Tell Me). The epic synth-pop of (Waves) and a witty cover of ABBA’s (The Day Before You Came) illustrated a band who were always willing to change and adapt to new styles within their electronic framework. After working on their own projects and film scores, they returned in 2011 to great acclaim with their fourth studio release, (Blanc Burn). Last month their new album (Unfurnished Rooms) came out. It’s songbased, but with experimental twists in the arrangements, offering their most forwardlooking work to date.

As well as being a finalist for the prestigious ‘Critics’ Choice’ prize at the Brit Awards, she also won Best New Artist at the NME Awards, and two European Border Breakers Awards. With a strong onstage presence (indicated by her European Festival Award for Best Newcomer of the Year), she immediately stands apart from many other emerging pop acts. But with 3.5 million in global sales, it’s her singles that have rapidly established her as a rising star. With the release of the (Dua Lipa) album, she’s revealed the full range of her ambitions. BRIGHTON DIGITAL FESTIVAL The Brighton Digital Festival has always been a celebration of digital culture. For the past 7 years the festival has delighted in tech’s ability to connect us in ways never before imagined and created opportunities for people that were never before available. However, as our relationship with digital technology develops, it has become ever clearer that real engagement with digital culture requires questioning as well. This year, in addition to the celebration of what technology can do, the events on offer at BDF17 seek to explore the good, the bad and the ugly sides to our digital habits in a bid to work together to create a future that is better for all.
Big ideas like these need room for big discussions. To make space for these ideas to be worked out, the BDF team created the first ever in-house conference. The Messy Edge, supported by The Attenborough Centre For The Creative Arts (ACCA), is a day of speakers, artists' work and opportunities for discussion around the frontiers of digital culture. Seeking to challenge dominant perspectives, the day aims to provide space to think about how we run the risk, despite the opportunities that digital gives us, of building a future on the deeply flawed foundations of the present. Discussion and debate around the major questions of our time will continue across the open programme in a number of thought-provoking conferences. Much loved networking event SheSays Brighton returns to platform the ways in which three inspiring women are changing the word. 360° Democracy - The Politics of Immersive Technology considers the deeper impacts of the technological revolution. Dots, the marketing conference like no other, features industry experts and inspiring outsiders taking over the Brighton Dome to explore how to approach the challenge of thriving in turbulent times. Lighthouse, totallyradio, Fugu PR and influential grime DJ Elijah join forces to present Radio // Future Sounds, a full-day event focussing on next generation radio creators and technologists. The festival itself will be following the footsteps of this conversation as it takes its first foray into radio creation with This Side of Reality, a new podcast that will unpick our bittersweet relationship with digital technology and bring important topics from the fringe to the forefront. Brought to life by Vasil Dzhagalov, Chris T-t and totallyradio; look out for them in discussion with other creators, innovators and thinkers at three live public recordings at 68 Middle Street in the run-up to and during BDF17.

Sound & music lovers will be spoiled for choice this year, thanks in part to ACCA’s new series of shows encompassing contemporary music, digital art and installation. Check out their programme for collisions between contemporary classical, electronica, audio-visuals and DJ sets in gigs from Ryoji Ikeda, Holly Herndon and many more. Catch SPECTRUM at the Brighton Dome and the various other independent gigs that are filling up the open programme online now. The open-programme model that the festival runs on means that anyone is welcome to organise an event and include it in the festival lineup for free. As a grassroots festival made by the community, for the community, there is room for everyone. Keeping the spirit of its origins alive as it grows in size, providing opportunities for artists and event organisers through commissions, funding and residency opportunities remains an important tenet of the festival’s identity. This year, artist Dominic Hawgood was selected for commission by BDF and the British Science Festival, who offered £5,000 funding for new work that explores the shifting horizons of physical and virtual space. You can see his new site-specific installation at the University of Brighton Edward St gallery alongside an exhibition of shortlisted proposals selected in the first stage of a competition for a new piece of public art for the University’s Moulsecoomb Huxley Building. From the 30th September the winners of prestigious digital art prize the Lumen Prize will also be exhibited here in the first stop of a year-long worldwide tour. As BDF’s new manifesto lays out, addressing inequality when it comes to digital privilege is another key part of its identity. In an attempt to make space for more voices to be heard in the conversation around making and using technology for good, a range of opportunities for people of all ages, inside and outside the city centre, are available. As part of its education strand, the festival has commissioned Exploring Senses to run a series of mobile maker labs at public libraries outside the centre of Brighton in which young people can have hands-on experimentation with arts, craft and digital technology. Grab a copy of the official BDF17 printed programme to read the full manifesto and find out more about the 100+ events taking place across the city from 14 September - 13 October 2017.

Congratulations, you’ve taken the next step of your life, and you’ve decided to do it in the weird and wonderful Brighton. Our small city is jam-packed with such an exciting blend of people and personalities, so whatever your interests you’ll definitely find people who really float your boat. First things first, you’ve heard of freshers flu and no matter how many Beroccas you drink, you’re going to get it - it’s inevitable. Living in close proximity to so many other students and going out partying until stupid o’clock in the morning gives the flu an open invitation to stay at yours for however long it pleases. My advice would be to register with the doctor the very day you arrive on campus, so that when do become ill - and you absolutely will - you won’t have to wait to be seen. Secondly, look into buying a long-term (three or twelvemonth) bus pass. Though it seems like a lot of money to spend all in one go, it provides you with unlimited travel on
all Brighton & Hove buses and saves you a considerable amount of cash in the long run. The pass also gives you the freedom to travel to outside the city. Although Brighton is awesome, sometimes it’s nice to escape the mayhem of city life every once in a while - and sweet little towns perfect for day trips are just a bus journey away. Use the card or mobile app and spend under £1.50 per day of unlimited travel. Brighton - they say it’s like ‘London by the sea.’ Unfortunately, the price tags also got this message and bought a oneway ticket down here, along with all you lovely fresh-faced freshers. For the Southerners this isn’t too much of a shock, but for the Northerners (that means anyone further north then the Watford Gap), this can come like a slap in the face when you realise you can’t easily go out and get absolutely spangled for less then a fiver. But not all hope is lost. So what if your friends up north can get served a triple for £2.50? Brighton is full of hidden gems - you just have to know where to look.
Of course, the seafront clubs which mostly play chart tunes have you covered for cheap drinks deals every single night of the week. But if you’re looking for something a bit different, try searching further inland. The Green Door Store, located directly beneath the station, is a live music venue as well as as late night bar/nightclub. Boasting an impressive and diverse 14 events a week you’re bound to find something to tickle your fancy. Most nights are free entry too, so it’s the perfect place to go when you’re a bit skint. Casablanca Jazz Club (another student favourite) has a resident funk and pop band every Wednesday - and the dancefloor is always full. With their dangerously wallet-friendly £1 tequila shots and £2 entry you can definitely have a great night out here for a tenner. Don’t like clubbing? No worries! A lot of Brighton’s pubs and bars play music and stay open late with impressive student deals. Hobgoblin has a spacious beer garden filled with tables under cosy heaters, so you’ll always find a suitable seat whatever the weather. The White Rabbit, in the heart of the bustling North Laine, puts on different themed nights every day of the week, including ‘open mic’ nights said to be the best in Brighton. Even if you don’t feel brave enough to perform, it’s a great way to listen to local talent and spend time quality time getting to know your new uni mates. Other pubs including the King and Queen, The Royal Pavilion Tavern (or ‘Pav Tav’, as locals call it) and the Gladstone all offer unbeatable student deals and attract all kinds of folk through their doors, young and old. If you’re exhausted of the constant partying and feel like something a little more cultured, Komedia and the Duke of York's both show the latest movies and comedy events for you to enjoy all year round. The Duke of York's cinema offers not only an impressive student discount, but student memberships too - as well as partnering up with E4 for their ‘E4 slackers club’, giving all students free tickets to dedicated movie nights. Alternatively, make use of the beach, grab a picnic and head down to the pebbly shore. It’s a cheap way to hang out with your friends, and if it gets too cold you can always migrate to one of the bars or cafes in The Lanes. I recommend Choccywoccydoodah - not only is the shop a cool place to visit and see all the amazing chocolate creations, but the hot chocolate is to die for. If you’re a bit peckish, on the other hand, there’s no need to pay a fortune. No matter what you fancy, Brighton’s got you covered. Pom Poko, a firm student favourite, can fill you up with delicious Japanese food for a fiver. On Wednesdays, Dead Wax Social serves up delicious 2-4-1 pizza and La Choza Mexican restaurant has great lunch deals, cheap filling street food and yummy cocktails every day of the week. My advice for anything in Brighton is to do a little research! There’s always a way to get something for cheaper and if one place doesn’t do it, another will. We’ve got so much choice in Brighton, so try something different than chicken and chips and maybe you’ll discover your new favourite spot!
COCAINE ANONYMOUS BY WILLIAM CLAY
Help is at Hand While on the surface it might appear fun, risk-free, or even glamorous, prolonged cocaine use can often have a overwhelming effect. Initially it may offer respite from anxiety and lack of confidence, but suddenly you’re spending more time in the toilet chopping lines than properly socialising. What can you do when partying stretches far beyond the weekend and your erratic, selfish or increasingly anti-social lifestyle is costing more than just money? Obviously, nobody intends to be a drug addict. What starts off as recreational fun, often starts to affect decisions and priorities. “I was caught up in a vortex of selfish desire to do everything I wanted to do - and I wasn't going to let anyone on this planet stop me,” says G, a 25-year-old recovered addict. “Life was never good enough. Never fitting in. Drugs fixed that.” Selling drugs at school helped elevate his social standing with peers. By 17 he dropped out of college and was dealing at clubs in London. Kicked out of home after assaulting his father, he resorted to squatting in abandoned buildings. Desperate and running out of options, soon G was taking crack cocaine and heroin to escape his circumstances. He’d glorified drugs to fill the void inside him, the feelings of insecurity, and the absence of friends - but realising this was a turning point. Initially counselling and therapy didn’t work. Then he encountered Cocaine Anonymous (CA). Here were people with similar experiences. “They welcomed me with compassion and acceptance. I found a place I belonged. Somewhere I could speak my mind without holding back.” As former users themselves, CA members understand the devastating effects of cocaine and other drug addictions can have on families, friends, and the community, as well as the enormous personal costs. G was taught how to face his fear of the real world, instead building love for himself. All he needed was willingness, honesty, and open-mindedness. Cocaine Anonymous started in 1982, and currently has over 60,000 members from a diverse range of backgrounds. Sussex sees 35 meetings, with 14 held in Brighton & Hove, offering daily free help for people concerned about a drug problem. This fellowship’s sole objective is to ease the suffering of addicts. The only entry requirement is a genuine desire to stop using mind-altering substances. Though the sharing of experience, strengths and hopes, members seek to solve their common problem and help others to recover from addiction. The cost of abuse can be high. Figures released by the Office for National Statistics show cocaine was involved in the deaths of 371 people across England and Wales last year, a rise of 16% from 2015. This rate has increased annually, now reaching a record high of 6.4 deaths per one million of the population. While Brighton & Hove, is no longer the ‘drug death capital’ (now out of the top ten for the first time in over a decade), the issue of abuse is still very real. From 2014 to 2016 there were 56 deaths linked to drugs locally – around 6.5 per 100,000 people. By offering a real alternative to self-destructive behaviour, CA helps its members reject a life of dependence and alienation. “Today, I am comfortable in my own skin,” Says J from Hove. “I am the person I always wanted to be and I’m clean and sober now. Life is beautiful. Give the programme a try. You have nothing to lose…” He’s discovered in CA a sense of comfort, safety, and love, and learnt to control the compulsive drive which sustains addiction. So, before chipping in for some cheeky post-pub powder, be honest with yourself. Is the compulsion for drugs overwhelming? Is the damage now outweighing the pleasure? If so, don’t be afraid to ask for help. You are not alone. You can contact Sussex Cocaine Anonymous on 0300 111 2285. It’s Freephone number and open 10am to 10pm. Online Meetings can be found at: www.ca-online.org www.sussexcocaineanonymous.co.uk

ROPETACKLE ARTS CENTRE
While millions of men struggle and fight in the mud and hell of the trenches, one woman’s story of The Great War begs to be told - the story of Mata Hari, the most notorious female spy in history. Dancer, lover, confidante and liar, Hari was a woman of many talents, impressively portrayed by Katharine Mary with intelligence and poise. 100 years after her execution and inspired by her own words, this is her story. With original composed music by Danny Bright, and written and directed by Gavin Robertson, this tumultuous story is one you’ll never forget.
THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST FRI 8 SEPT
BRIGHTON OPEN AIR THEATRE
Ernest is Jack. Ernest loves Gwendolen but she doesn’t know he’s Jack. Algernon is also Ernest but he loves Cecily. Both Cecily and Gwendolen are particularly fond of the name Ernest, which is good for Ernest but not for Jack or Algernon. Then there’s Gwendolen’s mother, Algernon’s aunt, Lady Bracknell. She disapproves - of everything, mostly. Performed by just three actors, this “Trivial Comedy for Serious People” is a fast-paced, one-act adaptation that will truly demonstrate, as Algernon/Ernest observes, that “the truth is rarely pure and never simple.”

THE LANTERN THEATRE
CONNAUGHT STUDIO, WORTHING
Shalalalalee is the ill-fated love story from the very talented Dreamshed Theatre Company, set to the backdrop of Manchester City’s unforgettable glory years. It’s the late 1960s and life for young Mancunians generally – and City fans in particular – is pretty good. Janice and Tony, believing that the whole world is at their feet, prepare for exciting times ahead.
Howard Coggins looks like Henry VIII there’s no escaping that. Stu McLoughlin doesn’t look like any of the wives, but he’s going to give it a go. After their previous self-funded two-man historical drama is savaged in the press, the two are at their wits end. One day, they hit upon a show idea that could transform everything. Can they put aside their differences and make it to the end without killing each other?
Using archive media material set to an absolutely stunning soundtrack of classic sixties hits to perfectly capture the spirit of the time, Shalalalalee tells a tale of football club fanaticism, young love, heady dreams and thwarted ambition.
With live original music, embroidery, barbie dolls, silly songs and historical hysteria, The Six Wives of Henry VIII promises to be an illresearched lesson in cross-dressing Tudor history that you’ll never forget.

He resolves to murder Julia by the new year’s end, and tells her so. She vows to stay alive, and tells him so. So the game begins. But while Julia cleverly dodges Matthew’s murder attempts, the Perry’s friends and staff are dying off mysteriously. As the bodies pile up, dimwitted daughter Bunny contemplates calling off her wedding since all the guests are dying off anyway.
FRI 29 SEPT
Choosing between Beginners, Intermediate, Advanced and Heroes, the participants decide the level of involvement they want to have in the show and abandon themselves to a predetermined script. SAT 30 SEPT
Stories of chivalry and battles, the search for the Holy Grail and the great betrayal of Lancelot and Guinevere are all part of this enthralling production from award-winning Story Pocket Theatre. Michael Morpurgo’s King Arthur is a finely-crafted adventure of epic theatre, puppetry and outstanding storytelling.
FANCY CHANCE By Stuart Rolt As a baby, Veronica Thompson was found outside a police station in Korea, presumably sent into a different life by a mother illequipped for children. Four decades later, Thompson has developed her own place in the world as neo-burlesque superstar Fancy Chance. “When you come from quite dire circumstances and end up in a good place, it awakens you to the struggles that people are going through,” she tells me. “Especially with the refugee crisis in war-torn places… I get really upset, touched, and extremely impacted by child migration. I was a heartbeat aware from being placed in that kind of circumstance.” This empathy, her own experiences, and plenty of poignancies have been packed into Flights of Fancy, a globe-trotting, time-travelling debut show. Staged as a three-leg aircraft journey, its story draws together offbeat comedy, original song, and outrageous film into a heart-warming spectacle. She’s been working on this for a few years, but assures that this is the definitive version. From starting out as a refugee to becoming the darling of the London cabaret scene, it follows her formative moments wrapped up in a tidy ‘narrative bow’ about sympathy and understanding. “It’s children that suffer most from the conflicts that happen anywhere. From domestically to war, everyone suffers but the children have zero-choice and don’t have the ability to move or look after themselves.” As a child, growing up just north of Seattle, her adoptive mother was very involved in the adoption community. This brought plenty of contact with kids who were given away because of disabilities or gender. “You’d have children coming over with absolute survival skills. They’d be hiding food, and the parents would be going: ‘Holy shit! I have to reprogram my kid, who doesn’t speak any English, to let them know there will be another meal.’” She acknowledges many people will never come into contract with anything like that. This was motivation enough to bring some of these themes into her show. Now is the time to produce a solo work. She’d been presenting short-form routines as part of an ensemble for years, but now feels empowered with the sensitivity and lack of ego to delve into a more personal performance. “It makes you quite vulnerable, but I’ve found the right collaborator to create something quite authentic.” Her work spans burlesque, drag, circus, and live art. In 2009, she was crowned ‘Alternative Miss World’ and in 2010 ‘London’s Top Tranny’. Although she adores being part of larger collaborative process, the rewards of going alone are unquestionable. “I get to flesh out whole thoughts and themes within anecdotes. It’s nice, but scary – super scary.
Because it’s just me and whatever work I put into it.” After five days at Soho Theatre during April, the show attracted rave reviews, and now heads out on a tour which lands at Brighton’s Marlborough Theatre on Fri 15 - Sat 16 Sept. In the early 2000s she moved to London, quickly finding likeminds amongst a burgeoning neo-burlesque scene. Fancy Chance would perform in shows which incorporated politics, tons of humour and drag work in a ‘burle-queer’ cabaret extravaganzas. While many of her contemporaries have drifted to the more alternative reaches of the cabaret scene, she now tends to be booked alongside classic burlesque performers as a light-hearted element. She mentions a distinct issue amongst some corners of the scene. Many artists are in danger of being reduced to objects of male pleasure. Straight men working as comperes can often contribute to the problem with an ill-placed retro attitude. The capital’s tastes for neo-burlesque undoubtedly helped revive the wider live performance scene, and in turn variety shows. “It gave people an appetite to go out. To dinner shows, where before they just weren’t as prevalent.” Almost two decades on and the performance arts are now celebrated across Europe – from festivals and clubs to theatres and television. Fancy Chance exists in the orbit of this scene. Producing work of merit and passion, she relishes having found an environment where she can flourish. “There’s such a good supportive community in and around London. I really feel like I have a name. And I have a place, where there’s a lovely group of humans are all creating things.” Fancy Chance: Flight of Fancy comes Marlborough Theatre on Fri 15 - Sat 16 Sept. www.marlboroughtheatre.org.uk www.fancychance.com

TEDX BRIGHTON 2017 TEDxBrighton
is taking place at Brighton

Tickets are £45 and available from
www.TEDxBrighton. com
On Friday 20th October TEDxBrighton returns to the Brighton Dome for its seventh year in bringing inspiring stories and characters to the stage. With over 15 speakers being announced over the upcoming weeks, including Trigger Happy TV creator Dom Joly, Sunday Assembly founder Sanderson Jones and Mental Health vlogger Jake Tyler, this year’s event is due to be bigger and bolder than ever before. Each year TedxBrighton plays around a theme as a means to create an emotional and elaborate story throughout the day, and ultimately gives the audience an experience that they would otherwise never have from simply watching these popular talks online. This year the event flies under the flag of ‘Wonderland? – Society’s search for Utopia’, which we hope will prove to be both as weird and wonderful as it sounds. Created by the opportunity to approach it from a wide range of different angles, there is an intriguing feeling prompted by this title. Is it hinting at an uncontrollable dystopian future? Or is it something more optimistic, hopeful and aspirational? Perhaps it’s both! Speaking to curator and event organiser Toby Moore about the theme, we were told: “This year I really want to challenge people about the part they can play in building the society and community they want to see around them. Last year I was particularly inspired by the delegates commenting on how they saw our event as a way of remembering all the good there was in the world. I want to capture that and bring it to this year’s audience in volumes.” According to a recent blog post published by TEDxBrighton committee member Joe Buzzard, the content of the day will heavily focus on issues such as gender equality, movement and migration and the role digital plays on forming and disrupting communities. This feels like a lot to cover in a day, but that is in some ways the magic of events like TEDxBrighton. On the one hand, it challenges our thinking across so many different topics in our lives. On the other hand, it allows you to better see and understand the common values shared by the great people in our communities who are committed to these ideas worth sharing. IT
FRI 8 SEPT Andrés Muchietti’s brand new adaption of the terrifying Stephen King novel, IT, hits our cinemas this September - and if the record-breaking trailer is anything to go by, we can guarantee you’ll be sleeping with your lights on for quite a while. The plot follows ‘The Loser Club’, a group of outcast kids who discover a shape-shifting, inhumane creature that may be connected to recent cases of missing children in their small town of Derry, Maine. Worries surrounding Bill Skarsgård’s portrayal of Pennywise the clown being dumbed down for a 12A certificate have been dispelled, since the release of two trailers have turned out to portray this petrifying cult classic perfectly. So maybe bring a friend to hold your hand… you know, just in case.
HOME AGAIN FRI 8 SEPT Reece Witherspoon plays Alice, newly separated mother of two and self-proclaimed loser, who on her 40th birthday/one-person NYE party meets three young aspiring filmmakers needing a place to stay. Like any normal drunk person meeting three random strangers, she invites them to live with her temporarily. What could possibly go wrong? Don’t worry, this movie doesn’t turn into a creepy, gore-filled horror film, but in fact unfolds into a romantic comedy full of laughs and new romances - which comes crashing to a halt when her ex-husband shows up, suitcase in hand. This directorial debut from Hallie Meyers-Shyer, produced by her mother Nancy Meyers, questions the traditional definition of family in a hilarious movie set to be an all-round audience pleaser.
AMERICAN ASSASSIN FRI 15 SEPT “You want a killer? Here he is." Dylan O’Brien plays an ‘ordinary everyday all-American athlete and scholar’ - and he’s hungry for revenge. Mitch Rapp, CIA recruit turned killing machine, leads this action-packed thriller directed by Michael Cuesta. In true American action blockbuster style, the protagonist begins living an American dream which is unfairly slashed while on holiday by unknown terrorists, losing everything. Picked up by the CIA Black Ops, Rapp is turned into a weaponised human by Cold War veteran Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton) to perform covert missions. However, while on a mission, Rapp must battle with his own morality, ultimately disobeying order to follow his gut and take matters into his own hands. If you love action packed movies with crazy fighting manoeuvres, then this is one for you.
VICTORIA & ABDUL
FRI 15 SEPT
The astonishing Dame Judi Dench stars in this extraordinary, feel-good story about the unlikely friendship between Queen Victoria and Abdul Karim, played by Bollywood actor Ali Fazal. More then a century later, Victoria & Abdul finally blows the lid off the controversial and longhidden relationship between a monarch of the British Empire and an Indian prison pharmacy assistant’s son. This true story follows the clerk sent to present her majesty with a ceremonial coin for her gold jubilee, as he turns into one of Queen Victoria’s most trusted confidants - all beginning with a simple smile. Based off the trailer, the balance between humour - with the Queen dozing off at the dinner table - and scandal of a forbidden relationship gives the audience a closer and wholly endearing take into the life of one of the most well-known monarchs in British history.

AMERICAN HORROR STORY FRI 8 SEPT FOX UK As American Horror Story returns for a seventh season, fans are being drip-fed a handful of teasers which, as usual, give very little information about the season ahead - but from what we’ve seen, this is set to be the scariest season yet. We know that the season will be set in Michigan and that the TrumpClinton election race will be used as a starting point that plans to highlight the forgotten citizens of our culture. However, the clowns, bees and cults will come together again to ensure it will be an intensely thrilling season, and we cannot wait for it.
THE ORVILLE SEPT, FOX UK This new comedy written by and starring the seriously funny Seth MacFarlane is in fact a spin-off of the much-loved Star Trek franchise. Set 400 years in the future, down on his luck after a bitter divorce, Planetary Union officer Ed Merce (Seth) finally gets his chance to command his own ship, the U.S.S Orville. However, when the position of the ship’s first officer is given to his ex-wife (Adrianne Palicki), this proves to make things a little more difficult. This series follows the crew of the Orville, both human and alien, as they explore outer space whilst also dealing with the hilarious ‘everyday’ problems of the workplace.
STAR TREK: DISCOVERY MON 25 SEPT NETFLIX It’s been over fifty years since captains Kirk, Spock and the rest of the crew from the original Starship Enterprise took to the skies for the first time. This September brings a new, all female-led TV series takes place a decade before the events of the original series and follows Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) the Starfleet First Officer and first human to attend the Vulcan Science Academy, on a journey through time and space. Showrunners Aaron Harberts and Gretchen J. Berg have given little away about the new show, but have divulged that interstellar warriors The Klingons make a return to the series, adding that they won’t be friendly…
THE DEUCE SUN 10 SEP SKY ATLANTIC It’s New York, it’s the 1970s, and you can almost smell the dirt and grime from the TV screen. Although this new drama chronicles the legalisation and subsequent rampant rise of the porn industry as it moves from under the table to a billion dollar industry, David Simon, the mastermind behind The Wire and his co-creator George Pelecanos want the viewers to delve deeper, behind the sex. James Franco plays twin brothers involved in the emerging industry, co-starring alongside Maggie Gyllenhaal as a Times Square sex worker, Lawrence Gilliard Jr. as an NYPD officer, and Chris Coy as a bartender and LGBTQ+ advocate. This is set to be a hard-hitting, thought-inducing series that has already been picked up for a second series - a definite one to watch.

SOPHIE COOK By Stuart Rolt
“You can’t beat days like this,” Sophie Cook sighs, looking up and down a sun-kissed beach and to the Rampion wind farm on the horizon. It is a particularly life-affirming day – the kind that reminds you why anyone would want to live in Brighton & Hove. We’ve just been talking about her show, Not Today – How I Chose Life. An autobiographical account of an incredible journey, it charts Cook’s childhood, her time in the RAF, becoming the first trans woman in Premiership football and how she very nearly became Britain’s first transgender Member of Parliament. Selected as the Labour candidate for East Worthing and Shoreham during this year’s election, there were people both inside and outside her party who thought it a foolhardy exercise. Not only was she battling an MP who’d held the seat since its creation in 1997, the area also has a reputation for robust attitudes towards diversity. “I’ve heard first-hand stories from people who had to move out of that area because of abuse. I’ve had a lot of abuse over the years, and even death threats on Twitter. I thought moving into politics it would step up a gear.” The reality was overwhelming love and support from the people she met while canvassing. Placing herself firmly in the public domain has brought a new perspective to her life, while offering a lesson about assumptions. “It’s very difficult to see areas that don’t necessarily look diverse on the outside, but it’s a form of bigotry to think that they are going to be bigoted.”
Although she eventually failed to win the seat, the result saw one of biggest swings in the country. In a more marginal constituency she would have won with ease. A lot of this success was due to increased voter turnout, as well as taking votes from each of the other parties. She maintains her gender identity didn’t come into the decision to stand, but was something which once prevented it. “I’d always wanted to go into politics, ever since I was a teenager in the Air Force and started traveling and seeing political injustice in the world.” After coming out it was obvious, she could either hide or stand up and make the world better. All the speaking work, the campaigning around mental health and hate crime, and increasing the LGBT+ presence in sports seems to have been leading up to Cook’s entry into politics. Fearlessness is centre stage in her show, which heads to Shoreham’s Ropetackle Centre on Tues 5 Sept. She offers that change is inevitable, everyone must accept it and move forwards. “The concept I came up with is about how being able to be open and honest about your vulnerability actually makes you invincible.” There’s a lot of experience to fall back on. Coming out whilst working as club photographer for AFC Bournemouth thrust her into entirely uncharted territory. And it’s been the same with politics. “It shouldn’t matter, in the way that a person’s sexuality shouldn’t matter. When you come out to someone, it’s just a new piece of information. It doesn’t directly affect their life, why should they have an opinion

on it?” Cook is adamant gender identity and sexuality are of no relevance to anyone except close family or friends. Yet many people feel justified in expressing bigotry towards others because of their race, religion, gender identity, sexuality, or disabilities. People express judgement all the time, it’s not acceptable. As a 12-year-old mod in 1979, she first came to Brighton to chase some rockers. Her group immediately attracted attention from the police. “One of the guys said: ’Let’s nip up a side street and they’ll follow everyone else.’ But no, they followed us, pulled us over and took our shoe laces. Of course, the people I was with had spare shoelaces. I had to use the ones from my parka!” The Who’s seminal Quadrophenia album was always something the youngster would return to. Any moment of pain, stress of change in her life, this epic rock opera, which centres around rebellion, identity, and riotous Bank Holidays on the south coast, would offer solace during the dark times. The emotional connection with the city eventually saw her decide to call it home. There’s a suggestion this odd little community, with its pebbles, mismatched buildings, and liberal outlook on life, represents a certain frame of mind rather than just a collection of postcodes. “I wouldn’t be the person I am if I lived anywhere else in the country. Brighton gave me the strength to be proud of who I am. All the time I was trying to make a life in other places I really struggled. It was only when I came here that I was set free.” The focus very much on politics, and doing whatever she can to help serve the people of East Worthing and Shoreham. Over 21,000 people put their faith in her to stand up for them. “Just because I didn’t get enough votes to actually be elected, doesn’t mean I don’t owe those people a debt of support. Too often people just walk away. But I am going to keep fighting, until people tell me they don’t want me anymore.” Sophie Cook’s Not Today – How I Chose Life. Comes to Shoreham’s Ropetackle Centre on Tues 5 Sept. www.sophiecook.me.uk

EASTERN EYE 58 LONDON ROAD BRIGHTON, BN1 4JE
2 St James's St, Brighton BN2 1RS
We have so much choice in Brighton that sometimes its a little overwhelming when choosing where to eat. I am constantly torn between trying to be healthy, which never seems to work out, and following my stomach at times of hunger. How is it that when you are hungry you can never decide on where to eat, nowhere seems to take your fancy and you end up being a miserable hungry gremlin. No? Just me? Moving swiftly on then… In our little jam-packed cosmopolitan city, you can definitely eat out most days of the week without ever having to repeat. Once you eat at SoulFoo Food Bar you won't want to eat anywhere else, trust me on this, I’m a foodie. With a bounce in my step, I set off towards SoulFoo food bar located at the bottom of busy St James Street. As I entered with my equally buzzing lunch date, my excitement for the food was matched by every single one of the staff and customers, being greeted with big smiles and hellos, I felt like I had come back to my mum’s house for dinner. Reggae music playing and the warm, earthy coloured interior created a relaxed and comforting vibe. A mixture of high and low tables, accommodating for all ages, nicely filled the space with a floor to ceiling window flooded the food bar with natural sunlight and allowed for great people watching. Once we sat down, George (one of the two brothers that own this lovely establishment) came automatically over to greet us and ask how our days were going; genuinely making us feel like VIP’s. The great customer service made us feel as though we were special regulars on our first ever visit. The menu is a small but well thought out, combining African, Afro American and Caribbean food and spices. We were firstly brought out Moyo Ribs and Suya wing. One bite and you could tell how much time and care were put into the food that came from the kitchen, evident in the flavour and the presentation. We quickly dug into the piping hot food, starting with the ribs, which were meaty and flavoursome, with a perfect hint of after-kick spice. Similarly the chicken wings were delicious, with a slightly

By Ellie Woodhouse spicier, crispy outside and succulent meat that fell off the bone making the whole processes effortless, a sign I think of a darn good chicken wing. Next came fried plantain with a spicy side sauce, much to my dates delight and fresh hand cut sweet potato chips. Both piping hot, it gave a sweet ending to a delicious lunch, leaving us full of yummy healthy filling food, and a feeling you can only you get from eating your mums home cooked food. All in all a beautiful meal, which was packed full of flavour and as cheesy as it sounds, it was packed with love. Their drink menu consists of rum cocktails with a twist, exquisitely presented, popping with colour and exciting flavours. Although the food is truly impeccable, what makes this place special are the people that run it. After our meal, both George and Brian (the other brother that makes up this fantastic duo) came over to our table and spoke to us to explain the background of their brilliant idea. It is clear to see how much love and thought went into every single detail, to create an inclusive, friendly food bar that in my opinion is just what Brighton is looking for. Both professionally trained chefs, George and Brian know how to cater for all their costumers, telling us how important it is for them to make sure they speak to costumers in order to understand their preferences in the spice and flavour combinations. Ladies and Gentlemen this trait is what makes the SoulFoo Food Bar incredibly special, they make sure that no one leaves feeling anything but wowed and looked after. After hearing their plans for ‘Sunday Throwdowns’, a twist on the traditional Sunday meal, allowing the residents and visitors of Brighton to experience traditional Zambian/ Zimbabwe food, I cannot wait to go back again and again and watch as, possibly could I say one of my top restaurants in Brighton, becomes the raging success it deserves to be.

LATEST GAMING RELEASES MARVEL VS. CAPCOM: INFINITE TUE 19 SEPT PS4
(Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite) is an upcoming fighting game in which, similar to previous instalments, players can control characters from both Marvel Comics and the Capcom universe to compete in tag-team battles. However, unlike previous games, Infinite will allow players to immediately switch between their team members at any point in the game to actually create their own assists. Fans will welcome the new controls as (Infinite) moves away from (Marvel vs. Capcom 3’s) three-attacks-pluslauncher button layout and instead has four attack buttons - light and heavy punches and kicks. As well as this, the game also has arcade, story, mission, collection, and training modes with the two-hour cinematic story mode serving as an introduction to the game’s fighting system for newer players.
NBA 2K18 TUE FRI 15 SEPT PS3/4 XBOX 360/ONE, PC, NINTENDO SWITCH NBA 2K18 is an upcoming basketball simulation game that allows gamers to play with real-life or customised NBA players and teams. Returning with MyGM (focused on realism) and MyLeague (offering more customisation options) game modes, you can choose to take your favourite team through a series of competitive modes or play as a single player in a compelling story. Kyrie Irving of the Cleveland Cavaliers stars as the cover athlete, with Shaquille O’Neal returning on the cover of the special addition game, which includes exciting physical and digital extras you won’t want to miss.
FIFA 18
FRI 29 SEPT PS3/PS4/PS4 PRO XBOX 360/ONE/ONE X,PC, NINTENDO SWITCH Early reviews have deemed the highly-anticipated FIFA 18 as ‘very impressive’. The new game will include sharper player movement and animation, with The Journey returning on most consoles for a second year running. The switch to ‘Icons’ instead of ‘Legends’, which include Pele, Diego Maradona, Lev Yashin and Thierry Henry, is one of the many new features to be included in the new game. Unfortunately not all features will be available on all consoles, notably Xbox 360 and Nintendo Switch, though we are excited to see how developers will adapt the game to newer consoles.
DISHONORED: DEATH OF THE OUTSIDER FRI 15 SEPT PS4, XBOX ONE, PC Fan favourite character Billie Lurk returns to the Dishonored series to explore the dark underbelly of Karnaca in order to kill the Outsider. To do so, Billie must use her all-new powers and abilities to face off new and returning enemies. With brutal combat systems, deadly weapons, powerful gadgets and intricately designed levels, this game delivers the ultimate customisable assassination gameplay. Death of the Outsider is the perfect entry point for those new to the series, as it is a standalone adventure with no previous experience needed. However, for longtime fan, Death of the Outsider still manages to deliver a significant expansion to the Dishonored gameplay.
THE BOK SHOP By Lucy Hallett I wouldn’t say I’m a particularly picky person; if you saw some of my ex-boyfriends, you’d know exactly what I mean. The only thing that I’m very particular about is food. I like corn on the cob but not sweetcorn, tomatoes but not ketchup, and generally beef but not chicken. There I’ve said it. I imagine one feels like this after admitting to a grisly crime. It’s not that I hate chicken how can you hate chicken - more that I always opt for its meaty and unhealthy counterparts. Hearing that I was off to review The Bok Shop, a brand new chicken place, I was more than a little nervous. Located on foodie-friendly East Street, it has a very cool yet minimalist feel inside with prominent black and white brick, wooden benches and absolutely huge windows making it the perfect spot for people-watching. The loud and funky music expertly matched the happy and relaxed vibe that the place exudes. They offer a small but perfectly formed menu with chicken pieces and burgers taking centre stage, and with this in mind I went for both. We started with two Hot Wings coated in a chilli buttermilk marinade (£2.50) and chose some Bok BBQ Sauce (£1) to dunk them in. There was a lovely kick and great flavour to the hot wings and I breathed a massive sigh of relief that my chicken-related fears were unfounded. The BBQ sauce had a zingy but sweet tang, gorgeous deep brown colour and coated the chicken wonderfully. Watching the familiar Fridayrelated merriment outside, my dining companion and I treated ourselves to a bottle of Heineken (£3.90) and a small bottle of their Bok Shop Red Wine (£3.20). I was pleasantly surprised that the red was so silky and easy-drinking for the low price… possibly a dangerous combination! Surveying the menu for the mains and the burgers seemingly jumped out of the page and immediately into my forethoughts so my decision didn’t take long. At the excellent recommendation of our smiley and cheeky server Sam, my dining companion chose the Classic
burger containing thigh fillet, lettuce and lemon kewpie mayo in a brioche bun (£7.50). I was won over by reading ‘satay sauce’ and opted for the eye-catchingly named Satay Night Fever comprising of thigh fillet, crunchy satay sauce, lettuce, chilli jam and fresh cucumber (£8.50). You can’t have chicken without fries, so we got a portion to share (£3) and some Bok Burger Sauce (£1) for more dunking. The chicken burgers arrived with a towering sense of magnificence and wobbled in that fantastically precarious way burgers do when they are full of tasty extras. The Classic Burger was juicy, succulent and had a gloriously lemon finish due to the mayo. The chicken skin which in my mind is unbelievably important to get right was beautifully seasoned and incredibly crunchy. My satay burger was by far my favourite thing of what was a very good meal. The satay sauce which was rich-tasting and plentiful was skilfully complemented by the freshness of the cucumber. The chilli jam was really quite fiery, which was nice as I love punchy flavours and again the chicken was remarkably juicy. The fries were crispy and the burger sauce was tasty and worthy of repeated dipping. I have to say I was particularly impressed by the menu’s assertion that all of the burgers can be made vegetarian or vegan as they can also construct them with faux chicken, vegan mayo, vegan cheese and sourdough rolls. I’ve come to expect that of many Brighton café’s but not necessarily of a chicken place so hats off. As the dinner came to an end, something had been niggling me the whole meal so I called the ever upbeat Sam over to ask him why it was named The Bok Shop: “Well, what sound does a chicken make? Bok bok bok….” . Feeling a bit silly for not realising that I patted my very content tummy, looked around at the tables of friends laughing and pulling apart chicken wings and left knowing with certainty that I would be back to devour more chicken in the very near future. KITGUM KITCHEN Review by Tommy Doyle
Upstairs @ The Mesmerist 1-3 Prince Albert St, Brighton This is not Kitgum Kitchen’s first outing in Brighton. Hopefully you’ve already been lucky enough to taste the delights of their menu at pop-ups or various street food events across the city. Now they’ve brought the best of East African and Gujarti cuisine to the heart of The Lanes. They’ve been upstairs at the Mesmerist for just a few weeks, but their gastronomic journeys, new flavours, and fresh homemade dips are already drawing crowds. Warmly greeted with a beaming smile by owner Fayez, we are ushered upstairs past the bar’s familiar quirky animatronic mannequins. Instantly, we notice the vaudevillian chic decor has been softened here. In fact, the room is more open than I remember, comfortably accommodating 40 covers across a variety of table sizes. Fayez seats us, brings some menus and offers a tasting plate as we pore over the luscious descriptions of the Sahani Ndogo (small plates) or Sahani Kubwa (big plates). Our host’s passion for the menu is palpable. He earnestly wants everyone to experience the magical food he grew up with. His partner persuaded him to dabble with pop-ups, after trying some of his mum’s cooking. To ensure absolute authenticity, mum is still very much involved, offering advice and keeping an eye on quality control. In 1972, his parents were amongst 50,000 Asians exiled from Uganda by the Amin regime. Although they only carried a single suitcase to the UK, they brought culture and cooking from two great continents. Fayez honours this heritage by fusing the freshest ingredients and deploying both rich and subtle flavours to bring a taste experience like no other. I'm glad I skipped lunch!
We start with Kigum Samosas (Chicken £4.50/Vegan £4), which arrive in generous portions. Light and wrapped in filo, we’re advised to pierce the pastry and drip in lemon juice, which adds an invigorating zesty steam to each bite. Next up is Jeeru’s Wings (£6.50), not least because the description read: ‘jeeru means cumin… it was also the nickname given to my mum as a child in Uganda.’ This was a selection of free-range chicken coated in tangy hot & sour sauce, then finished with fresh coriander and cumin that popped perfectly against the spicy glaze. Although this was a tough plate to follow, we next picked out Karanga Wari Kasori (£4.50). Chunks of corn on the cob lathered in a lightly spiced peanut sauce (prepared away from the other dishes), these two flavours worked in luscious synergy. After a short break, we moved from the small plates to the main dishes. We couldn’t resist the Lamb Kalyo (£9), a succulent slow cooked curry with sautéed potatoes. This comes with
chopped chilli and an amazing fresh carrot pickle to add as you feel - and it feels good! Looking next to a vegan option, we selected the Moong Nu Shaak (£8). This offered beans stewed with tomatoes, cumin and coriander, and embellished with yogurt and carrot pickle. Usually I find Moong beans a little bland, but we ordered ours with a seriously tasty Ugandan Chapati (£2), then ate with our fingers. The creamy combination of lush legumes and yogurt, infused with spices and crunchy carrot was a real surprise - both super tasty and super healthy! Last up, Kuku Paka (£9) was an onomatopoeic revelation. Free range chicken thighs in a garlic, ginger and coconut sauce, this is Korma’s daredevil cousin, which had an optional cracked fried egg on top. I’ll let you into a secret - my veggie companion couldn’t get enough of the runny egg or the sauce! This was an exciting mix of hearty dishes, each with multi layered textures and dazzling combinations that set the senses racing! All dishes were served with homemade dipping sauces, including Kitgum’s signature ketchup, a tamarind based sauce, dark-like treacle and full of unique flavour. I’m now a true dip disciple - I want this with everything! There was also Hot & Sour, a spicy sweet and sour sauce which was light, playful and tangy sensation. A den of curiosity with entertainment from swing bands and go-go girls, The Mesmerist should have an equally ambitious and exotic menu. The Kitgum Kitchen provides just that. You’re not just eating the food, you’re learning how to eat it and about the journey which brought it together.

BRIGHTON ELECTRIC STUDIOS Behind the doors of the old tramway house on Lewes Road, the future is brewing. You can feel it in the vibrations of the walls. Hear it in the music flowing out from rooms. See it in the faces, in the eyes of those who inhabit here. This is Brighton Electric and this is the music of the future. Last week I sat down with James Stringfellow; marine navigation graduate turned rock star turned owner and director of Brighton’s very own high-end recording studio complex, Brighton Electric. Over the course of our interview I began to see why bands such as Royal Blood, the Maccabees and the Architects, keep coming back to this historic venue. Located in Brighton’s old Tramway Head office, this venue beautifully brings the old-world style of Victorian architecture together with high-end equipment. This creates a unique recording the rehearsal space, to which everyone is welcome, encouraged and supported. Brighton Electric began however down the road from its current venue in an old soap factory in Hove. Developing out of the need for somewhere to record and rehearse in Brighton, James grew his company from the ground up. With a £700 investment and a whole lot of hard work, he created a space that’s mission is to provide premium equipment at affordable prices. Music to the ears of Brighton’s many students. Over eight years later located on the lively Lewes road, Brighton Electric offers extensive rehearsal suites, premier-league recording studios, a newly installed bar and a café, making sure bands never need to leave. Intentionally decorated to create a homey feel, bands can choose from one of their 17 bright and high ceilinged practice studios. Each equipped with its own drum kit, rooms range from the modest to the huge. Their main recording studio features a large day-lit live room, separate vocal booth and a 70s Neve 5316 console. Not only this, Brighton Electric is one of the only places throughout the UK that offers both Neve and API consoles. Pair this with the unrivalled Pro Tools HD software on hand to make sure any band is able to be well on their way to recording authentic and coherent sounds. Not only this, Brighton Electric offers the space for bands to meet managers and begin networking; building the relationships that are crucial within the music industry. But why is this venue particularly of interest to many of the students and young people in Brighton? Sticking with their ethos of affordability, Stringfellow offers students 25% off
SOUNDS GOOD TO ME
By Ellie Woodhouse all daytime rehearsal. Students can also benefit from the knowledge provided by the staff of Brighton Electric, always ea-ger to help and assist, as many of them says Stringfellow, have been in bands and the music industry for years. Not only this but once registered new members are given a tour of the space and are guided through any queries the bands may have about equipment. “I would hate to have bands in the rooms struggling with equipment, which stops them from recording or practising, don’t be shy, come and find one of us, we are always happy to help” adds Stringfellow. As many in the music industry knows, talent can only get you so far, and Stringfellow is a big believ-er in this. When asked on advice to students either starting out or those who want to push their music to the next level, Stringfellow insisted its all about “practise and developing your sound”. “The Maccabees were in studio one for up to a year before they began to record, constantly practicing everyday. And every week you could hear them becoming better and better. The music industry can be very isolating and lonely; you need that ambition and the drive to help you through. Record labels now want to pick up an artist or band when they have already done 75% of the work. They have got the following and the views and have done the tours, so that when the label picks the bands up all they have to do is boost you to the next level. Unlike before when they would develop twenty bands with maybe five being successful, they want to pick up five bands whom are already successful and just need the money to push them into stardom”. Stringfellow advocates that bands should “take the time, develop your sound and your agenda, there are no short cuts”. He also insists on making sure you “do something else”, “go down to the beach, chill with friends, because constantly doing one thing whatever it is, is never healthy.” Stringfellow suggests that what makes Brighton special within the music is the acceptance, the liberal outlook, and the gay scene within Brighton. So, especially being a student make sure you go out and experience it. Looking on to the future, Stringfellow has plans to expand Brighton Electrics venue, increasing its rehearsal space with three new rooms, a 150 capacity venue and private bar. Not only this but he wants to expand Brighton Electric to also have a “nerdy repair centre” as well as putting on movie nights and more exciting gigs and showcases.

MAMMOTHFEST Coming to Brighton for a third year in a row Mammothfest 2017 promises to be bigger and louder than ever, delivering a mind blowing three-day metal festival from 6th to 8th of October. Each night is themed differently; first up is Black Metal on the Friday, followed by Extreme Death Metal on the Saturday with Stoner Doom closing this insane festival on the Sunday. Rotting Christ will be headlining the main stage on Friday, for their UK exclusive performance as well as Wall of Denial regrouping for this special night after 14 years.
But it hasn’t all been rosy, back in 2010; the inaugural Mammothfest was upstaged by the launch of Ozzfest (by Ozzy Osbourne Black Sabbath) having detrimental and devastating affects on the festival. Undeterred and after two years of hard work to pay investors back, Director Dickson began to grow the festival organically, and has militantly done so to the point where Mammothfest now is one of THE metal festivals on the metal calendar. But they don’t want to stop here, as the dream has always been to rise to become an open- air festival and rumours have it that 2019 will be the year they do so - it wont just be metal!
This year the guys at Mammothfest have been able to extend the partying late into the night for the lucky VIP few. Exclusive after parties including additional bands and DJ’s, meet and greets and giveaways are all included in this night to remember. But quick, tickets are running out with limited VIP tickets still available to this weekend to remember.
Mammothfest not only brings the biggest metal bands in the world to Brighton, but it also provides a platform to unsigned bands to support major headliners such as TSJUDER, FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE and AMENRA. Allowing smaller newer bands to start to get the recognition they deserve, “investing in the future of metal” says Dickson.

Top Tips for Freshers’ Fair 1.
Take your time There’s a lot going on at the Freshers’ Fair so it’s important not to rush, you have plenty of time to check out everything that’s going on.
2.
Talk to Society Members Don’t hesitate to talk to the society members that will be there on the day. They’re there to help you out and welcome you to their society – ask them as many questions as you wish!
3.
Grab all of the freebies The Freshers’ Fair is renowned for its free stuff; there will be vouchers, sweets and slices of pizza flying out you from every direction (the dream). Make sure you take advantage of this!!
4.
Bring some water with you As fantastic as the array of free stuff is, you may want to bring some water along with you. This will save you from feeling too hot in the AMEX and cleanse your palette for more sugary goodness.
5.
Decide a meeting point It can be easy to lose people when you’re all busy joining new societies and seeing what Brighton has to offer. Make sure that you decide a meeting point with your friends beforehand, to save yourself from getting lost at the end of the day.
6.
Don’t bring too much with you Upon arrival you’ll be given a BSU tote bag and lots of free stuff. For this reason it’s probably best to pack light for the day and save yourself the hassle of carry too much around.
7.
Look out for local discounts Companies from all over Brighton and Hove will be at the Freshers’ Fair telling you about offers and discounts in the area. Support with your Wellbeing The CaSH Action Team is progressive and inclusive in its approach to sexual health education and can support you in taking responsibility for your sexual health. The team is a group of student volunteers, trained to deliver professional, friendly and non-judgmental advice to students. We run drop-ins once a week at Falmer and Moulsecoomb where we offer free condoms, pregnancy tests and Chlamydia and Gonorrhea screening, along with all the information you need about safer sex and signposting to other local services who may be able to help. University is about having fun and new experiences; at times this may involve alcohol, and sometimes sex, so it’s good to be prepared and to always carry a condom, femidom and/or dam. It can be easy to get swept up in the moment, but thinking about contraception before you go out makes it much more likely you will have safer sex. Sometimes, despite best intentions, things don’t always go to plan, so knowing where you can access emergency contraception, and PEP (if you think you may have been exposed to HIV) as quickly as possible is important, especially if you are new to town. You can find this information on our website brightonsu.com/cash, along with information on where to be screened for STI’s if you need to. Find out more For more information about alcohol, drugs and staying safe visit thinkdrinkdrugs.co.uk, where you can also take tests to find out more about your alcohol and/or drugs usage. We do this through outreach, campaign work and activism. PEACH is a group of fully trained student volunteers who are friendly and non-judgemental. The team are creative and fun in our approach to peer-led education.
