DECEMBER JANUARY So here we are, staring 2013 in the face and we know it’s going to be the best year ever for Brighton and Hove. We’ve been assured there’ll be an endless summer, an economic boom, the return of The Albion to the Premiership and magic beans for every household! We are also looking forwards to a packed events calendar next year, including the return of the hugely successful Brighton Marathon and Half Marathons. One thing Brighton does pretty well is arts and music festivals and The Great Escape, Brighton Festival Brighton Fringe and Meadowlands are all already taking shape for next year. Pride moves back to its traditional date on the first weekend in August. There’ll be the usual weird and wonderful mix of conventions and fairs coming to the city, including Modelworld 2013, McCoy’s 2013 Premier League Darts and the UK Banff Mountain Film Festival. A new event of the city’s calendar is the World Fantasy Convention in Oct. this annual meeting of professionals and collectors focuses on the literature and art mediums, rather than gaming or films. Brighton’s strong reputation for being a leading live music destination is further emboldened in 2013, with Richard Thompson, Lawson, The Stranglers, Mick Hucknall, Loudon Wainwright III, Emeli Sande, Simple Minds, The Pretty Things, Robyn Hitchcock, Courtney Pine, Gary Barlow, Ronan Keating, Paloma Faith, Plan B, Little Mix, Jessie J, Olly Murs, Oliva Newton-John, The Script, Alfie Boe, IL Divo Katherine Jenkins, Leona Lewis, Mark Knopfler, Elvis Costello, Passenger,, Dinosaur JR, Everything Everything, Frightened Rabbit, Modestep, Cockney Rejects, Stornoway, The Joy Formidable and Chas and Dave (to name just a few of them) all coming down for a bit of sea air. There are a few things for you to look forwards to, so providing we all survive the festive season with all our faculties intact we’ll see you in February… Happy Christmas!

Hansel and Gretel 6th - 9th December New Venture Theatre, Bedford Place Long capturing the imagination of children and adults alike, we welcome this magical new production of Hansel and Gretel to Brighton’s New Venture Theatre. With puppetry and live music, this traditional adaptation is sure to entertain the whole family in the run up to Christmas. The performance will remain close to the original fairy tales including the darker elements before the much anticipated ‘happy ever after’. For info visit www.newventure.org.uk

The Brighton Santa dash

Saturday 8 December Hove Promenade, 10.30am Thought you’d gone a little crazy there didn’t ya? Well not to worry you’re perfectly sane (I hope), it’s just that time of year when hundreds of people dressed up as Santa go jogging down the seafront. Why? For a good cause, of course! Raising money to help build schools in Africa, come down and join in the fun this Christmas. Entry is £14 which includes your very own Santa suit and medal. Have fun! www.santadashbrighton.co.uk

www.shesaidboutique.com Occasionally we get rudely reminded that Brighton isn’t the ‘anything goes’ liberal paradise we all wish it was. Erotic boutique She Said have bowed to pressure and painted over a saucy mural, outside their Ship Street Gardens store, after complaints from local residents. The affront-causing art, featuring a topless lady with a fan and nipple tassels, was created by local graffiti legend Req. Burlesque (and tassels) enthusiasts can still get to see a photograph of the work inside the newly rebranded shop from November 29th. www.shesaidboutique.com

MUSIC PREVIEWS

This time of year is a bit of a cultural black-spot on our calendar with the deluge of nonsense, pop heartthrobs and cover bands dominating a lot of our town’s venues, but for fans of real music do not fear. I have poured through every known list of gigs and can recommend some real crackers to keep you warm during these frozen months. So let us start with some weirdo Japanese noise/ psychedelic outfit…

By Brad Middleton

THE WAVE PICTURES HAUNT, 4th December

BORIS COALITION, 4th December

Typical that this comes the same night as the above mentioned Boris show but hey I doubt there is much of a cross-over of fans outside of me. These guys play simple catchy hook-laden indie-pop and are, frankly, quite delightful. This is a must for fans of The Smiths and the whole mid-80s English indie boom, in particular the C-86 lot, and is the perfect way to prepare for the GREAT INDIE XMAS PARTY which my friends over at ‘Another Sunny Day Indie Pop’ night are putting on at the Green Door Store on December 15th. It’s a good month to be an indie kid!

Just great Japanese weirdo’s who have developed a sound that is generally unique. Taking their name from one of the greatest doom/sludge songs ever, the incomparably brilliant track on the Melvins glorious Bullhead album, these guys mix the sound of their mentors whilst incorporating a lot of experimentation. Think tracks that last 70+ minutes and a desire to turn up and simply confuse their audience rather than play what they would actually want to hear. I have never seen them live (subtle hint there Editor!) but have heard some impressive reports of weirdness. One friend tells me of a show where they seemed more influenced by No Means No and Ornette Coleman than anything he’d heard before. So all you stone heads you know what to do, go do it and enjoy!

KRAKENHAUS: KRISTMAS KRANK THE HAUNT, 14th December

SAINT ETIENNE CONCORDE 2, 13th December

This special Xmas show by our favourite local indie starlets BRITISH SEA POWER has already sold out so get on the e-mail or whatever it is you kids do now and try and blag your way in for this sure to be quite legendary show. When a band of the stature of BSP announces that they have VERY, VERY special guests lined up you can be sure it ain’t going to be someone you don’t get to see at a venue this small everyday.

Simply wonderful classic pop trio who had gone off the radar for a while until their glorious return with a new album last year which switched a lot of people back on. Saint Etienne has always been an odd band. Named after a French football team and with a real love of that countries pop music, reggae, folk and general kitsch, they were always destined to be an interesting distraction. Mix all of that together and add some great Phil Spector-ish influences and you have just about the perfect 21st century pop group. The only problem with that analysis is they started way back in the very late 1980’s and so therefore aren’t a 21st century band at all. I did warn you they were odd.

Orbital

ORBITAL DOME, 11th December

JOHNNY CASH NIGHT with KEEP IT CASH CONCORDE 2, 21st December

Orbital are back with what many think is their best album this century and this show is sure to be a heaving mass of blissed-out happy-clappy people remembering what a time we all had in the mid-90s dancing to their weird epic soundscapes. The great ‘Somewhere Out There’ was my introduction to them and was the cause of a few lost nights but it was the majestic Butthole Surfers sampling ‘Satan’ that really captured the spirit of the times. How the new songs on Wonky will stand up to such classics remains to be seen but I’m sure a lot of people there won’t really mind as long as they just keep moving…

Why this has now become a tradition I’m not totally sure but for you real gig addicts Christmas is a horrid time. Lots and lots of horrid covers bands playing halls that are generally full of rabid youth throwing themselves around to whatever cool sound they’re into that week. It’s a national disaster but if you really must go and hear some live music this week look no further than this! Keep It Cash are great, a truly professional take on the whole myth of what a Johnny Cash show would have been like had I been around to see him.

BRIGHTON RUMBLE ROCKABILLY SHOW CONCORDE 2, 27th January

Legendary DJ Dave Mumbles returns with another great Rumble to get us warmed up after a pretty bleak few weeks. This time he has, amongst many others, the great Doel Brothers and Leanne & The Rockeros strutting their thing on stage for all the quiffedup boys and girls. These shows are always great fun and with it being on a Sunday what else you going to do? Exactly, go have a dance, have a drink and sod any form of pretention and just enjoy!

Before I go I have a happy announcement that I don’t want any of our readers to miss out on. The mightily great and loud gods of grunge Dinosaur Jr return to our town on the 2nd February with a show at the Concorde 2. Tickets are on sale now. This is literally just landed in my inbox but is also worthy of a brief note. This year’s always great SEA MONSTERS fest is again happening at the Prince Albert towards the end of January and so far the only band I know playing are the delightful PLASTICINE on the 23rd so get along and support a bunch of great local bands.

CHALLENGE PETE: ICE SKATING....

blades of glory Pete Bennett’s obviously not had enough of us just yet, or he would have changed his phone number, surely? In fact, he readily accepted the challenge to get on the ice at the Brighton Pavilion pop-up ice rink. Nestled in the shadow of the most iconic of all Brighton landmarks, this beautiful attraction was a fittingly festive place for Pete to slip out of his comfort zone. This is all set to be the most primeval of contests, one man, his fraught battle against gravity and the cold wet smack in the face that awaits him should he fail. In a cruel twist, we discover the protective gear we purchased to protect Pete is just slightly too small to be any use. But what are the odds of him falling and hurting himself? On arrival, Pete’s growing disquiet with the whole situation is palpable. The chance that he’ll panic out on the ice and encounter a traumatic teeth/ice interaction is becoming a little too probable, and this starts to unsettle the rest of the team. Pete also chooses this moment to mention that he’s recently turned down a part in a horror flick named Zombies On Ice, a cautionary tale of what happens when an ice hockey team turn into flesh-eating undead, largely due to his complete inability to ice-skate. Just before we have to drag him out there, Amy, a member of staff who turns out to be a trained figure skater, offers to tutor Pete on the ice, which seems to placate some of the tension in the air. Apparently it’s the UK’s first ever ‘green rink’, using a green energy tariff to freeze the ice and provide power for the masses of infrastructure around it. Not that they’ll need much power to keep the ice solid tonight. It’s so chilly outside that photographer Adrian’s gear is acting strangely. This 800 square metres rink, set against the spectacular backdrop of the Pavilion, has space for 250 skaters, or one very wobbly Mr Bennett.

images: adrian holloway

Actually he’s not bad at all, there are a few small problems, his intended destination and actual trajectory never quite match up, but the fence surrounding the rink should prevent anyone careering out into the darkness of Pavilion Gardens. He’s more Robin Ince than Robin Cousins, but he makes a near circuit of the ice, before he goes down to get a lot more familiar with it. It looks like Pete has beaten our challenge. He’s stared the horror of a vicious ice-burn (and serious humiliation) in the face and come out on top. Even the paramedic on standby is quietly impressed, although he points out: “He’s not really going fast enough to properly fall over.” We actually have trouble encouraging Pete to finally leave the ice. But we’ll see if he’s quite so cheerful after what we have planned for next time! We have to thank Shella, and all her splendid staff at the rink, for their exceptional patience and assistance. www.royalpavilionicerink.co.uk By Stuart Rolt Visit www.bn1magazine.co.uk to see the other challenge pete video’s!

The xx Delicately negotiating the fine-line between blank minimalism and melodic subtlety, The xx are coming to Brighton on Thu 20 Dec with a taste of their new album Coexist. The band‘s meteoric rise in popularity can be easily measured by their twice moving this show to a larger venue to meet the huge demand for tickets. After releasing an eponymous debut in 2009, The xx nimbly sidestepped the obscurity-beckoning curse which often affected other surprise Mercury Prize

winners, and set about consolidating their position as the most exciting, yet understated bands in the world. Incessant touring and festival appearances followed, plus a few esoteric personal projects and a little DJing, then they returned with new songs, renewed enthusiasm and a reputation for being a superb live act. Although Coexist isn’t a tremendous departure from their first album, it offers a cohesive evolution of the ideals that forged the

band back in 2008. In fact there are almost up-tempo elements creeping into the songs. But hard-core fans needn’t worry, whilst the leisurely simplicity in the songs might trick an untrained ear into thinking they lack sophistication or diversity, this band are still capable of writing a killer pop tune or two. www.thexx.info

Ellie goulding The incredible Ellie Goulding is one of British pop music’s most talented and versatile stars. The ethereal pop of debut album Lights was followed by a beautiful cover of Elton John’s Your Song last Christmas. But now the singer has surprised fans yet again with latest album Halcyon, which won rave reviews both here and in the US thanks to its darker, dancier feel - it even sees the star try her hand at dubstep and pull it off in style. With new single Figure 8 and a UK tour imminent, as well as a hand in the Twilight hysteria thanks to her song Bittersweet being chosen for the final film’s soundtrack, it’s a wonder Ellie had time to talk to us... but she did.

So the album has gone down pretty well then... I am so pleased with the reaction to the album. Obviously I was nervous in the weeks running up to the release as it is a huge deal releasing the second album, espeically the second, but I have had the most incredible reaction to the point where it make s me really emotional. I put a lot into this record, a lot of personal stuff, and it makes me so excited to share it with everyone, and it has had the msot amazing reviews so i am really pleased.

You surprised people yet again by going much deeper into dance music this time, with the dubstep experiment. That must have been fun?

I have always had a real affinity with electronic music and dance music. It’s something i have never been able to shake off. I just love it so much. I knew this was going to have a certain feel - it wasn’t going to be a folk record! I wasn’t really thinking about whether iw anted or needed to do a certain kind of sound. People keep saying they don’t know where i will go next which is amazing.

How do you go about physically writing music if you don’t plan direction and so on? I follow my instinct. I literally get into the studio, we start something on piano or guitar and it gradually builds into a song over however many days or a week or whatever. That for me is instinct and i go with that on everything.

The tour is obviously the next big thing on the horizon, are you focussing fully on that now? We are gearing up for touring, we have rehearsals for a few weeks. But I am still promoting the album too, I still haven’t finished. I just got back from Australia and New zealand, went straight to Europe and now just back, kind of everywhere really. It’s been busy. So much so that at half four I have just managed to find time for my first food of the day!

What do you have in mind for the tour? i want something ridiculous, i just don’t know what yet, i am still thinking about it. The main thing is i want it to sound

incredible, i want it to sound out of this world.

What’s on the horizon apart from touring? i never know what is going to happen so i play everything by ear. Figure 8 comes out then hopefully people like it. After that who knows.

You landed a pretty big spot - Bittersweet is on the soundtrack for the final Twilight film. Did you go to the premiere? Twiilight has gone huge for that song. I haven’t even released it but people are going mad for it. I keep getting calls and texts, people saying they have heard my song. i ask which one and they say the one from Twilight. I didn’t go to the premiere or anything but only because I was away - I probably would have gone along if i’d been here, to show my support for the film.

Are you a fan? I am not like a diehard fan but i totally get why they are so ridiculously popular.

The soundtracks have always been pretty strong - was it nice to be asked? Yes I was really happy for the song to be on the soundtrack just because the past ones have been so incredible, so amazing.

NYE GUIDE

proud cabaret masquarade ball

After weddings, New Year’s Eve is the best guilt-free excuse for getting properly battered. But where’s the best location for your intoxicated celebration of a simple date change? There are a few options, all of them better than staying home developing a strong resentment for Jools Holland and his stupid Hootenanny (whatever the hell that is!) Brighton Proud Cabaret celebrates as only as they can. A three course supper, delicious cocktails and the best burlesque and cabaret performances in the South are followed by a sensational masquerade ball. Make sure you’re masked and dressed to impress. The Komedia have a mammoth NYE line-up. The Krater Comedy Club has Simon Evans, Markus Birdman, Eddy Brimson and MC Stephen Grant, whilst in The Studio, Born Bad will be rocking Brighton's messed up children with the best vintage rock'n'roll, surf, trash, swing, blues and jive. Also in the building, Ipop will be supplying the biggest perfect-pop floor-fillers from the last five decades. If you can’t choose between any of those, you can just get a ticket for all of them. Circus Fantasia returns to Latest Music Bar

with an interactive 18th century Venetian masked ball spectacular. Featuring: burlesque, belly dancers, scores of performers, comedy, mime, magic, extreme pole dancing, and loads of great music, this is maybe the busiest (and most extreme) party of the night. If you want to dance your new Xmas socks off, then this is absolutely the night for you, H Bar celebrates with Codesouth 88.8 FM DJs spinning their usual high quality dance music upstairs, with Delirious playing up-tempo house till 12:30 downstairs, before the mighty Beatsworkin take over with Paper Recordings’ superstar Ashley Casselle. Completing the line-up are the delightful Platinum Angels. Breaks and Dubstep mega-club Supercharged hits the Concorde 2 for NYE, with bass-heavy offerings from Shy FX, Wookie and High Rankin. Down at FunFair Club, who are either existing in the future or celebrating NYE 2013 a year early, provide their trademark, achingly-cool, indie/retro action, but turned up to the festive max. They’ve also got an open bar, plus it’s possibly the only NYE bash in town with a meat raffle!

The Volks will be serving up their trademark big and bad bass-heavy mayhem, with the legendary Ray Keith, Bladerunner, Jumping Jack Frost and Bryan Gee tearing up the place, alongside the cream of Brighton’s bass scene. Dust off those shellsuits, Coalition is taking us back to the 90’s with Pump Up The Jam. A bash solely dedicated to Dance, House, Hip Hop and Pop from music’s greatest era. The Honey Club Prok and Fitch headlining alongside, Vince Frimpong, Squiz and Kia all playing dance anthems, with Lollipop R&B DJs and DJ Mick Fuller in the other rooms. Life Club are celebrating Cuban style with Akaakaroar. Martyn, Eliphino, South London Ordnance and Tessela all bring a slice of Havana to the seafront. Caribbean and Latino fancy-dress thoroughly encouraged. Of course you might be inclined to stay in and watch the dismal rom/com New Year’s Eve. We should tell you now; Sarah Jessica Parker is the unnamed woman Josh Duhamel hankers to reunite with. Now there’s absolutely no reason for you to stay in, is there?

METAL MADE FLESH We caught up with local comic design artist and illustrator Simeon Aston, to discuss everything Sci-fi and find out where his latest creation Metal Made Flesh is heading. His work can be summarised as figurative with a dark science fiction influence, comprising freehand drawings, acrylics and digital imaging. What got you into drawing and what are your influences? From a young age I was heavily influenced by movies and production design, especially as a child growing up in the eighties. I went on to study Art & Design at City College and have been working freelance ever since. I suppose influences include artists such as H.R Giger, Salvador Dali and Mobius, leaning towards the more surreal, twisted darker style of art. I liked the idea of taking something familiar, such as human form, then blending it with metal and chrome to create something new and unique, like Giger. My current focus is on my creation of Metal Made Flesh, a series of scenes and characters depicting a past and present story (see images) Other influences include artists such as Drew Struzan (he created over 150 movie posters, e.g. Blade Runner, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Back To The Future) and Syd Mead (the “visual futurist”) who designed a lot of concept and production art for science fiction films: Blade Runner, Aliens, Tron and Star Trek to name some. Star Wars had a huge impact and inspiration from an early age, where I became enthralled in illustrated production design. The new Star Wars films lacked any imagination and were clearly merchandise driven, which is a shame and a voice echoed amongst many critics. Brighton seems to be a hub for creative people. Have you found there’s abundant support for the comic arts and illustration community? There’s quite a few networking meetings dotted around town which can prove very helpful, especially if you want to get your work out there or published. I’ve attended Cartoon County which is last Monday of every month, with guest speakers. I mainly started doing freelance work, cover art and tattoo designs to start with, then found a style I was happy with and have kept to it. I guess it’s about getting your work out to as many people as possible and getting your style noticed.

simeon aston

What’s next for Metal Made Flesh? Issue 0 will be out in February next year, explains the back story of the three characters, and what sort of world they live in. More of a gritty, dark sci-fi tale, explaining the internal struggle the key characters face. It’s written by Charles E Nunn and edited/produced by Jeremy Biggs. What’s your advice for anyone trying to start out in comic illustration? Find your style. It’s important to create a signature style. Get into life drawing and technical drawing to get perspectives and perhaps architecture, but it all depends on what you want to achieve. I know someone who is an amazing background artist, but perhaps not as great with characters. But that’s the great thing about networking you can get collaborations between artists. Best Science Fiction film? Ooh...loads! Blade Runner is my all time favourite, mainly for me it’s about the design and the attention to detail. Others have to be Empire Strikes back, Fifth Element and Skyfall, which was surprisingly good from a design perspective. The list goes on. Metal Made Flesh (MMF) illustrated story issue 0 coming Feb 2013, Dark sci-fi from subersivecomics.com Art/created by Simeon Aston Edited/produced by Jeremy Biggs Writing by Charles E Nunn www.simsim78.deviantart.com

THEATRE GUIDE

By Stuart Rolt

You’d normally associate this season with pantomimes but to our surprise there’s very few of these traditional shows to be had. Perhaps there’s no demand for shows with preposterous characters, high drama and lots of sexual ambiguity. Which you have to admit, is surprising… The Ropetackle Arts Centre is doing it’s bit to take up the slack with Tom Beard’s Treasure Island, which runs Sun 23 - Sat 29 Dec. An all singing, all dancing twist on Robert Louis Stevenson’s adventures on the high seas, it promises magic, puppets, monkeys, parrots, tropical islands, Pirates, Princesses and more Pirates!! The Dome Studio offers some Christmassy fare between Wed 12 - Sun 16 Dec, with Horse and Bamboo’s production of The Nightingale. This festive revival of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairy tale sees a selfish king replace his melodic songbird with a mechanical replica, but he soon thinks something has been lost from his life. There is a sure-fire way of enjoying the company of men in hosiery this month, because über-cool rock opera , The Rocky Horror Show, runs at Theatre Royal on Thu 20 Dec - Sat 05 Jan. This 40th anniversary party production stars Ben Forster, Rhydian (X Factor / We Will Rock You), Roxanne Pallett (Emmerdale) and

Oliver Thornton. This much-loved classic is packed with fantastic tunes and plain-naughty weirdness. The Theatre Royal has another camp classic, Dolly Parton - 9 To 5: The Musical, from Mon 10 - Sat 15 Dec. A hilarious story of friendship, gossip and revenge it boasts an allstar cast including Natalie Casey, Bonnie Langford, Ben Richards, Jackie Clune and Amy Lennox. Based on the delightful hit movie, it centres on three office workers who learn there’s nothing they can’t do - even in a man’s world. Also at the Royal is Alan Ayckbourn’s haunting study of grief, obsession and the supernatural, Haunting Julia, which runs Tue 04 - Sat 08 Dec Duncan Preston, Richard O’Callaghan and Joe McFadden star in the first ever UK tour of this critically acclaimed London, which examines the mysterious death of a young musical prodigy. The Old Market play host to Spun Glass Theatre’s afternoon Scratch Session on Sun 16 Dec, where five teams of new writers will have ten minute slots to try their new poetry, script, short story, stand up; anything goes, with the hope that you’ll be inspired to get writing yourself.

The stand-up veteran’s underplayed brilliance always provokes big laughs as he muses gently, but hilariously, on the mundane and everyday. An unassuming stage presence morphs the largest venues into the smoky, sticky-floored clubs of the eighties where he began his career – regarded as a true master of his craft by critics and cult fans alike this is not one to be missed.

Featuring office Christmas party faux pas, Secret Santa confessions, festive shenanigans and mistletoe misdemeanors critically acclaimed improve comedians, The Maydays, will be appearing at Komedia on December 19. Using nothing other than the talents of their resident musician, the audience’s X-rated confessions and their wits this show promises nothing other than being entirely unpredictable, or entirely one for the grown-ups. The group is at pains to stress that the dialogue, words and choreography of each show is completely made up on the spot – a formula that offers a truly unique and personal experience this festive season.

Vinegar Knickers: On the Edge Upstairs at Three and Ten, 12th January

Katherine Ryan – Nature’s Candy Komedia, 3rd February

Suffering from January blues? Overdid it over the Christmas holiday? Well, this female tour de force offers the perfect detox. Join Harriet, Sam and Katie on their desperate quest to be the edgiest sketch group on earth – in a launderette. Likening the experience to watching a living, breathing Benetton advert peel itself off the billboard and into your brain, the girls provide surreal quality comedy and will be bringing their own brand of cool to the intimate setting of Upstairs at Three and Ten early next year. Hailed as ‘side-splittingly funny’ by critics the trio are a breath of fresh air, and can chase away your winter glum from just £7 on January 12.

As seen on numerous TV shows including Mock the Week, 8 out of 10 Cats, and ‘Episodes’ Katherine Ryan is brash, a little shrill even, but acidly funny. The Canadian gossips animatedly on motherhood, divorce, and MTV, delivering her own brand of funny with perky bitterness and bitchiness to Komedia on February 3rd. A word of warning; Ryan does tend to head toward the bad taste rather quickly – think rape and bestiality – but it comes with fabulous one-liners and enough attitude to pitch it convincingly. Perhaps leave the kids at home for this one though.

BRIGHTON Tattoo CONVENTION 2013

Images: Josh Redfearn

By Holly Cozens Always wanted to see a place buzzing with some of the world's most highly regarded tattoo artists? Well consider yourself lucky as come February, you can fill your boots at the 6th Brighton Tattoo Convention. In the past this event has taken place at the popular Brighton Racecourse, however this year artists, traders, bands and us eager beavers will descend on a new seafront venue. The Hilton Brighton Metropole is the South of England's largest residential conference centre and stands right in the heart of the city. The hotel is easily accessible with many parking spaces close by or a 10 minute jaunt from the main station. New to this year, it will also be holding every event and exhibition under its one roof, including the pre and after-show parties. Perfect if you are trying not to fall victim to the temperamental East Sussex weather plus no unnecessary travelling.

artists at this year's convention while simultaneously boasting the extent of skill and ability Brighton holds within its city limits. Whether you are a virgin to the ink or a tattoo veteran, there will be an incredible range of styles to see from artists all over the world, giving you the chance to find your favourite and come away sore and happy. But of course, a tattoo convention isn't all about tattooing, it's also about cake. And t-shirts. And whatever else all the traders might have up their sleeve. Enjoy live music, food and drink and maybe even a competition or two to keep you on your toes. If by Sunday you haven't soaked up quite enough tattoo culture for the weekend, a free after-party awaits and really, there's no excuse for you not to attend bearing in mind it's all taking place in one prime location.

A number of Brighton studios and talented local artists, many of which may be very familiar, are making an appearance this year. Shops such as Angelic Hell, Into You, Magnum Opus, Tattoo Workshop, Nine, Gilded Cage and Inka will all be represented by a number of reputable

FILM FAVOURITES OF THE YEAR By Wayne Imms

I haven’t actually seen many films this year, which is rather unusual for me. Of those I have seen, very little impressed me. The first, back in January, was Spielberg’s big screen version of Michael Morpurgo’s War Horse. My expectation was that it’d be good, but it was a far too long and a far too sentimental and serious film, although it looked great. Because it was Spielberg, I expected much better. Expectation can certainly be a key element of the film-going experience. I usually, but not always, read a few reviews of each film before deciding if it’s worth a watch. This does shape any expectation, rightly or wrongly. Ultimately, it’s what I think about films; what I enjoy, not other people. The Time travel adventure, Looper, starring Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, was a disappointment despite a lot of critical acclaim. Probably the year’s overall most disappointing release was Prometheus, Ridley Scott’s highly anticipated and overhyped return to the Alien universe. The story was quite weak and the characterisation no better. Finally, on the cinematic lowlights, there was The Woman in Black, a huge hit for Hammer Films and Daniel Radcliffe’s first film since Harry Potter. This was very overrated and really not very scary. Like the Paranormal films, to an extent, it’s a mystery to me why so many cinemagoers found it such a scare. For example, a sudden face at a window or a crow appearing from nowhere may make some jump slightly, but these and other cheap tricks don’t equate to a real spooky film. Films I enjoyed were The Dark Knight Rises, Skyfall, Avengers Assemble and Sightseers. The latter came very close to being my favourite of 2012, but that little honour goes to Headhunters. This was such an action-packed and a really gripping experience that, upon its end, I turned to my friend and said, “Wow, what a film.” If you like that kind of thing, it is great. It’s based on a novel by the bestselling Norwegian crime author Jo Nesbo.

I asked Brighton cinema bosses for their favourites of 2012; first the Duke of York’s General Manager, Jon Barrenechea, who has just overseen the opening of Duke’s at Komedia :– ‘My favourite film of 2012 is Nostalgia for the Light, a powerful documentary from Chile that draws parallels between astronomy and the study of the skies with the atrocities committed during the Pinochet dictatorship. It’s a simple analogy, yet very powerful. Beautifully realised, gently and respectfully drawing our attention to the families of the victims and the astronomers who share the Atacama Desert in Chile in their search for truth in the past. This is exactly the kind of film that I feel like we will be able to show more of at our new venue, Duke’s At Komedia’. And the Odeon’s Marketing Manager, James Tully:‘For me, 2012 will be remembered as the year that sky-high expectations made it near impossible for me to enjoy any film that was released. So rather than a list of favourite

BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 39 ]

films, I have a list of films that I am hoping will hold up and improve on a second viewing. If I have to choose a ‘best film’ then I will go for Beasts of the Southern Wild. It’s by no means a perfect film, although the accusations from some journalists of it being “poverty porn” are unsubstantiated, but in terms of an emotional connection this film had the biggest effect on me this year. It tells the story of Hushpuppy, a young girl living with her father in The Bathtub, a fictional, southern area of New Orleans which is flooded after a big storm. The relationships are real and touching, and the struggles are devastating. It works as a study of nature, both man & animal and an entertaining, captivating story. In particular, Quvenzhane Wallis’ performance as Hushpuppy is a perfect example of childlike curiosity, exploration & persistence. Give it a chance’.

h-Bar

H-BAR We’ve been championing the H-Bar for a while amongst these pages. Partly due to the venues music-driven concept, and partly because we love the irony provided by a quintessentially conservative place like Hove having a venue that’s showing its (supposedly cooler) sister city how it should be done. “I want to bring clubbing back to the clubbers,” says Faisal, the H-Bar’s wildly enthusiastic manager. “When I came to Brighton I learnt that it’s all about the music. Then, over the years, Brighton seemed to lose its way. Now it’s all about glitz and glamour, generics and branding.” When Faisal, started the venue was often empty. Despite people telling him that he’d never turn the club around, he applied the same approach to running it that he’d used at venues like the Honey Club, The Open House and the infamous Ocean Rooms. After installing the biggest lighting and sound systems he could fit into the basement, the real task, of getting feet through the door, began. During the first year, he had trouble getting even local talent to come down and play, but after a lot of promotion and attention to detail, the place started

attracting the attention of some rather famous names. Matt Hardwick, Judge Jules, Ed Solo, John Askew, Dillinger, Zinc, Harry Shotter, Tidy Boys, JFB, Dave Pearce, Terry Francis, Slipmatt, Freemasons and Micky Finn are amongst the outlandish and unlikely list of names that have been attracted by the H-Bar’s charms. There’s not many clubs where you’ll often find a world famous DJ personally welcoming clubbers at the door, but it seems to be a venue where DJs behave… well… just different. “It shocks me who asks to play down here sometimes. I think it’s a joke. I’ll be like: ‘Can you email me? You do know this is a 200 capacity club?’ but they always turn up.” The long list of top-shelf talent was further embellished by the recent appearance by Norman Cook, who turned up to spin at a CodeSouth FM party. “He loved it. We didn’t put him in the club either. We put him in the bar. The idea was that you’d come in for a drink and while you were at the bar you’d look over and realise it was Fatboy Slim playing in the corner.” The show was broadcast live on CodeSouth, so word spread rapidly about the

superstar’s appearance. Soon the Police were lending a hand in keeping the quickly growing crowd under control. “People were walking through the door and their jaws were just hitting the floor. You just can’t get a smaller venue with a bigger DJ. If you look at his diary it was: The Olympics, The Amex Stadium and then The H-Bar. You couldn’t make it up.” The famous talent clamouring to perform at such a small venue is just the start of the numerous contradictions that makes the H-Bar so interesting. Whilst a plush, up-market décor meets you upstairs, down below the feel is markedly less mainstream. Strangely it all works rather well. In fact it makes you wonder why you ever settled for less. “I like the yin and yang of this place. You walk to the bar and you think ‘This is nice, I need to make an effort’, then walk down stairs and it’s all hard and underground. I love my music, but I don’t want to listen to it in a shithole. www.h-bar-hove.com By Stuart Rolt

BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 41 ] There’s a chance that some of the kids in your life are getting antsy that Father Christmas is unaware of their wishes. So, as part of his annual consultation programme, Santa is setting up a drop-in clinic down at Brighton Marina, enabling the city’s children to voice their opinions and concerns. “We get fun, laughter and joy from knowing that every child that’s been good will get a treat at Christmas.” Lead festive support analyst, Sparkles the elf, tells us. A key part in Santa’s operation, Sparkles has worked her way through the ranks to finally become a member of the elite guard of staff that assist Santa on his grotto visits. Santa, with some help from Brighton Marina, is inviting every child under the age of 14 to visit him for free, between 11-4pm every Sat and Sun, until Christmas. As well as visiting Santa, artists from Same Sky are getting festive at the grotto, with free festive “make and take” workshops. Kids can make table decorations, stained glass ‘Santa Stop Here!’ signs, stocking fillers and tree decorations. Of course all this activity is just building up to the night before Christmas, when Santa hits the skies, and his elves keep this

incredible logistical task running smoothly from their state-of-theart facility at a secret location inside the Arctic Circle. “It’s frantic, but bursting with excitement. It’s like the Olympics all in one night. Only for Santa it’s quite lonely scooting all over the globe with only his reindeer to talk to.” In a brief 31 hours on Christmas Eve, Santa will travel over 70 million miles, visiting around 91 million homes, to leave presents for 378 million children (assuming they’ve all behaved this year). Obviously organising the transglobal transportation of almost 350,000 tons of presents, across a schedule that involves 830 home visits per second, is a feat way beyond the capabilities of most courier companies. But it’s not a problem for a pan-dimensional festive entity, especially if he can rely on the dedication of Sparkles and her fellow elves. “We are the most enthusiastic workforce to ever have existed. We are magical and fantastical, so we don’t face any serious challenges.” But what we want to know is: what happens to the 78,624 tons of mince pies that hopeful kids leave out for Father Christmas? “That’s a silly question, have you seen how fat our boss is?”

The Food Critic

sam’s of brighton Sam’s isn’t jostling for position in the main strip of restaurants sweeping over Kemp Town, but the five minute extra walk is well worth it… as me and my taste buds found out tonight. The décor is a cute mix between wooden tables, shade-covered chandeliers and framed pictures adorning magnolia walls. Clean, friendly and romantic, I felt immediately at ease; even without a mirage of Tom Hardy which would possibly help the romance factor. After a particularly fun conversation with the waiter, the upshot being that we don’t agree on football teams, he recommended a wine that suited my hazy request for ‘something medium’. The result was a lovely Italian Fino (£3.90). Shortly afterwards I was pleased to be slurping a tasty amuse bouche of artichoke and mushroom soup dribbled with truffle oil. For the starter I opted for perfectly cooked, beautifully presented scallops served with brilliantly moreish and crispy pancetta and a generous swipe of curried celeriac puree (£8.50). My dining companion ate with gusto, and by gusto I mean greedily, a well presented yet rustic bowl of succulent rabbit swathed in exquisitely al dente pappardelle pasta and parmesan (£7). Sam’s leave the perfect amount of time between courses; a good thing as being rushed along makes me want to garrotte the nearest person with a napkin. Happily my food-high continued after being served a juicy, perfectly pink shoulder of lamb nestled on creamy mash and Span-

ish lentils (£15.50). The quenelle of salsa verde added a wonderful dimension to the lovely dish. I also sampled the luscious wild sea bass fillet which worked perfectly with the pommes Anna, Swiss chard and caper cream sauce (£17). I’m of the impression that a meaty main should follow a fishy starter or vice versa and Sam’s absolutely accedes to that point- the fish dishes are much lighter than their meat counterparts so a mix and match scenario works perfectly. Irrespective of fullness, the moment a truly gorgeous dessert is produced any dieting ambitions take a kamikaze dive into the nearest sugar bowl. I sampled the Tiramisu (£6) that was tasty but lacking booze, a dream-like chocolate fondant and pistachio ice cream (£6) and what can only be described as the world’s nicest sticky toffee pudding (£5.50). Realising that yes, I’d actually broken my skirt zip due to happy gluttony, I ambled out of what is very honestly one of the best dining experiences I’ve had in ages. I’ll be back- possibly with the dining equivalent of a burglar’s swag bag. By Lucy Hallett
