DECEMBER & JANUARY I’m sure there’s more Christmas lights out this year. So much for the looming energy crisis everyone’s talking about. If you’re sick already of hearing festive tunes in shops, or hearing salacious details of high-profile figure’s problems, fear not! We’ve got plenty of amazing ways to gladden your soul, all here in our bumper Dec/Jan double issue! This month we’ve taken some time with Brighton-centric crime novelist Peter James, ahead of his Roy Grace story The Perfect Murder getting a theatrical makeover, and we’ve also been pushing boundaries with poly-sexual performance artist Peaches. As ever, we’ve got our usual look at the Theatre, Comedy and Music events happening locally, plus our usual extensive guide to all the entertainment you could ever ask for in Brighton & Hove. 2013 was good, but we’re going to make sure 2014 is even better.

DJ DEREK RETIRES Last Brighton show Concorde 2 / 13 Dec After years of entertaining festival and club goers alike with his prime Reggae selections, DJ Derek is finally calling time on his career. Now approaching his 72nd birthday, The Bristol-born DJ has been a fixture on the Reggae/Dub circuit for quite possibly… ever. Thrilling an ever-growing army of fans at events like Glastonbury, Bestival, St Paul’s Carnival, and regular residencies across the country, he won hearts and minds with his charming manner, strange patois toasting and his impeccably cool record collection. After scaling back his residencies over the last few years, the DJ has announced his forthcoming NYE show at Notting Hill Arts Club will be his final show. There’s still a chance to catch Derek in Brighton, for one last time, at Concorde 2 on Fri 13 Dec. Festivals will never be the same again. www.concorde2.co.uk

BURNING OF THE CLOCKS

5K SANTA DASH

THE TREMENDOUS TIPI

Brighton Seafront Sat 7 Dec

Kings Road Arches 7-8, 14-15, 21-22 Dec

Want to see a bunch load of Father Christmases legging it down the Brighton promenade this month? Well, as luck would have it, The Brighton Santa Dash will be taking place on Sat 7 Dec, in order to raise money for Passing It On – a charity that helps build schools in Africa. It only costs £15 to enter and this includes your race entry, a superb Santa suit and a bespoke medal to commemorate your achievement. Participants are also encouraged to try and raise some extra cash since it is the season of giving. If parents would like to bring their children, there may be a chance to take part in their own 400m race before the main one.

This year, Brighton Music Hall and Tremendous Tipi present their very special 2013 Christmas Festival. Every Saturday and Sunday leading up to Christmas will see the huge Tremendous Tipis lit up and decorated in seasonal style against the backdrop of Brighton beach. Come and explore the Tipi village where you get to experience the Winter Warmer log cabin, pop up chocolate shop or snack on traditional roasted chestnuts. Of course, no Christmas festival is complete without a visit from Santa. Children can come and meet this busy festive fellow and reindeers in the magical raindrop caravan. To top off the day’s excitement, take in some live music or dine in with a Sunday roast and other delicious food.

BURNING OF CLOCKS

NORTH LAINE PHOTOGRAPHY BRIGHTON AND HOVE CALENDAR 2014

Sat 21 Dec Every year, on the shortest day of the year, something beautiful happens in our seaside town. The people of Brighton and Hove come together and make paper and willow lanterns, which are then carried through the streets of town to their final destination on the beach as a symbol to mark the end of the year. The Burning of the Clocks was created in 1994 as a way for anyone, irrespective of faith or creed, to celebrate the festive season. Brighton’s community art charity Same Sky bring you this free yearly procession involving the whole community, ending up with a stunning fire show, live music and a dazzling firework display. The route is suitable for all ages and abilities with over 2,000 people expected to take part in the parade and 20,000 spectators who will turn out for the whole event.

£6.99 For 14 years now, North Laine Photography have made it their mission to create a new year calendar representative of the great city we live in. This year is certainly no exception. Nigel Swallow is the designer of the Brighton and Hove calendar and claims that the reason for its immense popularity every year is classic landmarks and landscape images interwoven with pictures taken on the beach, in the street and at local festivals. By doing this he hopes to give residents, born and bred or otherwise, a sense of what the city means to them. The 2014 calendar will feature spectacular photographer’s shots from Paddle Round the Pier, the Children’s Parade and more plus notable images from Simon Anderson’s star trails over The Chattri, Finn Hopson’s misty Devil’s Dyke and Anne Marie Morris’ capture of a descending chip-stealing seagull.

ROYAL PAVILION ESTATE PLANS

Built between 1787 and 1823 for the Prince Regent (later King George IV), the Royal Pavilion was the ultimate pleasure palace. Since its time as a royal residence the iconic Pavilion has become the symbol that represents the whole city of Brighton & Hove. Due to a lack of funding these very special buildings are becoming in danger of suffering neglect. Presently it’s considered that the facilities available to visitors are far from perfect, certainly not befitting a landmark of such historical importance. To add to the problems faced by the Pavilion Estate, many areas of the property are suffering from disrepair, or are simply not fit for purpose anymore. Notable for exotic Indian exterior and Chinese interior, The Pavilion was sold to Brighton Council in 1850, as Queen Victoria disliked its lack of privacy. Across the gardens, the Brighton Dome incredibly started life as stables, whilst the Corn Exchange was designed to be one of the finest indoor riding venues in the world. No other location in Britain combines a unique former royal palace, a museum, three entertainment venues and gardens. Now the whole Royal Pavilion Estate is about to get a dramatic makeover. Beset by problems like inadequate facilities, anti-social behaviour in the gardens and an inability to get the public to view the Estate as a whole, the time has come to deal with the challenges faced by this unique piece of British history. To define what changes were needed in any program of work; more than 1,000 face-to-face interviews, over 40 interviews with key stakeholders and surveys with 2,500 visitors to the Estate were conducted. Focus groups, with primary and secondary school teachers, young adults and people with access needs were also undertaken to discover what improvements the community wanted. Rumours have been flying around - many of them portraying the intentions of the Estate management as being far from benevolent, long before any plans had been formally announced. But now the details of the ‘master plan’ have been revealed, showing how Brighton Pavilion’s survival into the next century can be ensured.

The Royal Pavilion Estate has now bid for £14 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund, with a decision being announced during May next year. A promise of a £5.8 million contribution has already been made by The Arts Council towards the upgrade project. This money will go towards the planned £35 million revamp of the gardens and buildings at the former palace of George IV. The planned programme of renovation and improvement includes restoration of the historic buildings, the creation of new ones and a concerted attempt to ensure the Estate is tied together in the minds of the public. Bristol-based architect Feilden Clegg Bradley has drawn up plans to create a new building in New Road opposite the Theatre Royal, which echoes John Nash’s original vision of building a conservatory on the site. The architect’s brief also includes creating a clear entrance to the estate, which will mirror the success of the recent New Road improvements. A core aim of the plan is to reconnect the buildings with each other and the surrounding gardens. The plan will conserve the listed buildings for future generations and help more people learn about their history. There is also now a desire to bring together two organisations – the Royal Pavilion and Museums and the Brighton Dome and Brighton Festival – to make them more efficient. Planned work could see refurbishment of the inadequate artist’s facilities in the Dome, an overhaul of the asbestosridden space that links the Corn Exchange and the Studio Theatre, creation of an education space inside the Dome, opening up historic tunnels beneath the gardens and remodelling of the Estate’s gardens. Other issues that’ll be dealt with include creating a suitable area for artists to create props for upcoming productions, making the buildings more accessible for everyone. By Stuart Rolt

GLENN TILBROOK ACOUSTIC TOUR Komedia // Mon 16 Dec

British music legend Glenn Tilbrook sets out on a 33 date UK tour, which sees him returning to a solo acoustic show. He’ll be showcasing songs from his new album, when the tour comes to Komedia on Mon 16 Dec. The album, Happy Ending, is stripped back and beautifully layered with a totally different feel to anything he has released before. One of the UK’s best-loved musicians, Tilbrook was a founder member of Squeeze, the archetypal British band that landed Top-Ten hits all around the world. With his two solo albums, The Incomplete Glenn Tilbrook and Transatlantic Ping-Pong, he proved he’s still capable of penning a classic tune or two. For 2009’s album Pandemonium Ensues he injected some fresh faces by recruiting new band The Fluffers and some prestigious guests in the shape of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis. www.komedia.co.uk/brighton

WARPAINT Brighton Dome // Thu 23 Jan

METRONOMY

Warpaint return to Brighton, with a special show at Brighton Dome on Thu 23 Jan. This LA four piece’s love of improvisation, and nearobsession with musicianship, has made them hugely popular. In the three years since their debut album, The Fool was released, they’ve become the name on the lips of every truly knowledgably hipster, largely down to their fearsome live reputation. Not quite Dance music and not quite Rock music, the band is now touring in support of a new self-titled album, which is set for release next year. A snippet of new tune, Love Is To Die, has already appeared in a Calvin Klein jeans advert. We suspect it won’t be the last time the public gets to hear music from this amazing band. www.brightondome.org www.warpaintwarpaint.com

They’ll be performing tracks spanning Mr Holland’s entire solo career and some from his latest album The Golden Age Of Song. Three million album selling pop icon and former Spice Girl Melanie C will also be accompanying him, following in a long line of brilliant female special guests. www.brightoncentre.co.uk

Now here’s a more sedate affair. Spice up your Sunday morning with the esteemed company of Herbie Flowers on Sun 29 Dec at The Corn Exchange. A former member of Blue Mink, T. Rex and Sky and one of Britain’s best-known session bass-players, Flowers has contributed to recordings by (wait for it….) Elton John, David Bowie, Lou Reed (most famously providing the bass line for Walk on the Wild Side), Roy Harper, David Essex, Al Kooper, Harry Nilsson, Cat Stevens, Serge Gainsbourg and George Harrison. He also played bass on Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of the Worlds. It’s estimated by the end of the 70’s Flowers had played bass on 500 hit recordings. Kicking off at 11am, with Sunday papers, a choice of pastries and a cuppa on arrival, these ever popular sessions of irresistible jazz have all the ingredients for the perfect Sunday morning chill out. www.brightondome.org

THE CHINESE MAN Concorde 2 // Thu 23 Jan

METRONOMY The Old Market // Wed 29 Jan

One-quarter Cantonese, two-thirds Manchou, the Chinese man appears to be from the Wu Tang Mountain, just outside Marseilles, France. In 2004, the Chinese man (as we affectionately call him) decided to send his disciples around the world to spread the Zen spirit with old music samples and supersonic bass! Now this mysterious ensemble comes to Concorde 2 on Thu 23 Jan. Brought to wider attention though Mercedes-Benz’s use of I’ve Got That Tune in an ad, this French Trip Hop collective draw their influences from Hip-Hop, Funk, Reggae and Jazz. www.chinesemanrecords.com www.concorde2.co.uk

Electro-Popsters Metronomy will be rocking The Old Market on Wed 29 Jan A band with quite a few Brighton connections, they write shimmering Pop songs, the majority of which are punctuated with crisp beats and soaring keyboards. Since hitting the big time with third album The English Riviera, they’ve also found time to remix the work of Gorillaz, Lady Gaga and Franz Ferdinand, amongst others. With a new album, Love Letters, dropping in March 2014 this is the perfect time to catch them. www.metronomy.co.uk www.theoldmarket.com

PEACHES

DOES HERSELF

BY STUART ROLT

A girl sits alone in her bedroom writing beats, when suddenly a flying vagina appears next to her bed, through which an aging stripper appears to show the girl what she’s capable of. Viewers of an ignorant disposition should consider looking away now. Because we’re about to plunge headlong into the convention-defying, sexually progressive world of Peaches Does Herself.

The first film from the queen of confrontational ElectroPop, this is a provocative re-interpretation of Peaches’ life, all told through choice cuts from her extensive back catalogue.

In the first place, I didn’t mean to make a film or stage show. It was a theatre that asked me to do a production. Right away I said I’d like to do Jesus Christ Superstar as a one woman show,” says Peaches, as we catch up with her in Berlin.

There’s a curious air of intimacy to this theatre-based recording of her outrageous Rock opera. Some of us are used to seeing Peaches in the standard promo videos, but now there’s an occasional flash of real vulnerability. Don’t misjudge the situation though; Peaches is very much in charge of this crazy, ever-mutating musical circus. In truth it might not tell you much about Peaches herself. It is after all a highly fictionalised biographical account, based upon the rumours and assumptions that surround her. It will probably tell you more about yourself though... What offends you, what delights you, what buttons you like having pushed and (perhaps) how liberal you really are… But, I have to ask, is it possible to get a serious socio-political message across in such a confrontational manner, especially if the people are concentrating more on the interestingly-endowed body suit you’re wearing? “I don’t see why that’s a problem. I guess it’s the way that you approach people and the manner in which you’re confronting them.

“Then it was 2010 and I thought I could do something about Burlesque, or being Jewish and living in Berlin. But I’ve spent ten years building my own form of performance and music. So why don’t I use myself and all that research and re-contextualise my music into a narrative. It was as simple as that. It’s a celebration.”

“You have to be inclusive. Otherwise you’re going to turn them off. Sometimes if you’re confronting them in a way where they don’t know that they’re being confronted and educated, it’ll stick with them. We’ve all had those experiences, where we’re not comfortable with certain things, but they stay with us. Either you immediately hate it, or you don’t understand it, but later you think: ‘Ahh… yes. Now I get it!”

Since premiering at Toronto Film Festival last year, the film has been travelling the globe, causing debate wherever it goes. Now this unique peek inside the mind of a musical visionary comes to Brighton in December.

“You have bad experiences, good experiences, they all shape the way you develop your own social interactions and intellectual actions.”

“It became a stage production that ran for five nights. We filmed it and when we watched the footage we realised it could become a film. We got asked to do a second run, which we filmed again. The music is live, recorded during the show, and 90% of the action is also live except for some of the close-ups and the ending.”

Jolting between explosive visceral routines and moments of incredible beauty, the film is challenging, provocative and thoroughly captivating. There’s a lesson for us all, in the teaches of Peaches. Peaches Does Herself plays at Corn Exchange on Sat 14 Dec, as part of Brighton Dome’s earsthetic season with a special Q&A with Peaches afterwards.

BRIGHTON MUSIC CONFERENCE The UK DJ industry to converge on Brighton Brighton will be the epicenter of UK Dance music in Spring 2014 when top DJs, music tech manufacturers and dance label heads all converge on the town on April 11 and 12. The first annual Brighton Music Conference (BMC) is set to be a major event for the UK Dance industry, and arrives at a time of unprecedented global growth in dance music. After ignoring it for decades, Americans have finally gotten the dance bug, and have rebranded it Electronic Dance Music or EDM. It is now big business in the States, and recently culminated in the founding of SFX Entertainment, the world’s first public dance music company. Despite the UK’s shaping of global dance music over the years – so many superstar DJs, electronic acts, record labels and nightclub brands have come out of this country – it has never had its own electronic music business conference. The fact that Brighton is able to play host to such an event is a huge opportunity for the town. At the Dome, BMC will feature a two day exhibition for aspiring producers, DJs, and anyone interested in electronic music, as well as a one day trade conference for industry professionals. The exhibition will feature demos

of cutting-edge music technology from companies such as Ableton, Native Instruments and Sennheiser whilst the one day trade conference will cover the latest industry trends through a series of keynotes and panels with music business executives. There will also be a number of special parties taking place across Brighton on April 11 and 12. Charity partner Last Night A DJ Saved My Life will host a fundraising event with an - “A-list DJ”, whilst underground London house label Hypercolour has confirmed that it will showcase some of the hottest UK DJ talent for BMC. Brighton DJ John “00” Fleming, who is part of the BMC team, will also be headlining an event. As the town gears up to the main event, Brighton’s Skint Records will host a BMC teaser event on Sat 18 Jan at Digital. Super early bird tickets to BMC are now on sale at a discounted price. Exhibition tickets are currently £5 (usually £12), whilst trade conference tickets are £76(usually £86). For more info and tickets visit: brightonmusicconference.co.uk

PETER JAMES THE PERFECT MURDER Packed full of dark humour, despicable characters and an early appearance from Brighton’s finest fictional detective – Roy Grace, Peter James’ The Perfect Murder occupied the top slot in the book charts for an incredible 15 weeks. Now the time has come for this chilling short novel to be realised in theatrical form. Adapted by Shaun McKenna (Ladies in Lavender, Lord of the Rings) and directed by the Olivier Awardwinning Ian Talbot, The Perfect Murder is touring the country next year with an all-star cast. We spoke to Roy Grace’s creator, International bestselling novelist Peter James, to try and discover what the challenges are of adapting the story for stage; how can you plan the perfect murder and why is his cop creation keeping him so busy? “I never wrote it with a stage play in mind, but Shaun has done a brilliant job,” Peter tells us, on a cold autumn morning. “It’s faithful to the book, but it does have a completely different ending. But, as with the book it features a young Roy Grace, who is on his first homicide case. “It’s been a dream. My parents had regular Friday night seats at the Theatre Royal, and they used to take me from about the age of eight. I used to sit there and dream that one day, there might be a play, or something that I’d written, on that stage. It’s going to be strange on the opening night in Brighton, to be there in the middle of a dream come true.” The play sees Les Dennis star as straying husband Victor Smiley, who is facing the realisation that he and his wife Joan barely know one another. Their uneasy status quo can’t last though, as soon it appears that a well-planned murder could be the only way out of this rut… for one of them. “Oddly enough, Les Dennis looks exactly like how I imagined Victor. When I first wrote the book about five years ago, his star had waned a little. So he wasn’t really in my thoughts. But when his name popped up as a suggestion, I realised he was just like my description. He was quite amused when I told him.”

Readers of the Roy Grace novels have seen him progress through the ranks, all the while haunted by one mystery that remained insolvable and deeply personal. Did Peter set out with an idea of where his detective would be ten books down the line? “When I wrote Dead Simple I had a two book deal. I thought that what homicide detectives do is solve puzzles. I thought it would be interesting to give him a puzzle of his own that he couldn’t solve.” “I wanted to get away from the standard cop with a drink problem. In the real world a cop wouldn’t last a single day with a drink problem. We’d set the mystery up in book one and solve it book two. But after the first novel I was inundated with emails from people speculating about what might have happened. I thought: ‘Actually. Everyone’s really enjoying this. Let’s keep it going.’” The Roy Grace series has sold over 15 million books to date, so if the stage adaptation of The Perfect Murder is a success, could it lead to an appearance on the small screen? “We are very close to the whole of Roy Grace to come to the small screen. As well we’re in negotiations for a film version of Dead Simple.” Peter has recently been enjoying massive success with the latest Roy Grace book, Dead Man’s Time. But it seems the Roy Grace’s investigations are not simply staying confined to paper and screen. “There’s an interactive Roy Grace story coming out called Dead Man’s Tracks. It’s going to have people dying on the London to Brighton Line, you can get involved and help Roy solve it by being on the train. It’s coming next year, so that should be a lot of fun.”

Alongside Les Dennis, whose extensive theatre credits include Chicago, Legally Blonde, Hairspray, Art, Skylight and an awardwinning role in Jigsy, is Claire Goose, who starred in Waking the Dead, Casualty and The Bill.

www.peterjames.com

So how does the stage production cope with the myriad of (and often recognisable) locations in the average Roy Grace novel? “We’ve got a very imaginatively designed set, which is on split levels. The set’s really clever.”

Peter James’ second volume of short stories, Short Shockers Two, is out now in eBook form, whilst his first ever novel, Dead Letter Drop, is back in print on Thu 02 Jan.

The Perfect Murder comes to Theatre Royal as part of a nationwide tour on Mon 27 Jan - Sat 01 Feb

Rescheduled from October, Flanagan will bring his mixture of observational middle-aged humour and cheeky-chappy persona to the Brighton Centre this month to warm your wintery cockles. After a previous path of varied careers from fish porter and dishwasher to later going back into education, Flanagan finally became a professional comedian in 1997. He went on to perform his first full-length solo show in 2006, bringing us up to date with his last hugely successful ‘Out, Out’ tour in 2010/2011. www.brightoncentre.co.uk

The obscure and hilarious Sean Lock is returning to the concert hall of the Brighton Dome this month after his show was packed out to the gills during the Brighton Comedy Festival this year.

7 December

Well established in the world of UK comedy with regular appearances on ‘8 out of 10 Cats’, ‘Mock the Week’ and ‘QI’; Lewes based Lock is sure to be effortlessly funny as he brings to life the every-day mundane. Fun fact: Before comedy, Sean Lock had a variety of odd jobs, apparently one of which was a 6-week stint as a goat-herder in France.

Marlborough Theatre

This year, The Happy Clap Trap are bringing you an alternative to the traditional pantomime formula. There will be no ex-Eastenders stars dressed up unflatteringly as widows and genies, just a festive comedy show of good will. Son of the Nativity Panto is a re-boot with a difference. Expect cheekiness, hilarity and masses of tinsel as The Happy Clap Trap go bigger and better this season. In addition to this, you can enjoy a delicious platter and a bottle of wine for just £20 before the show.

Upstairs at Three and Ten

If you are already familiar with the workings of the Krater Comedy Club and regard it as a fun night out, then the Krater Christmas Party will not disappoint. Throughout this month you will have the chance to sample two stand up acts and a compere, a three-course Christmas meal, to be followed by a DJ and dancing. There are a number of dates for which you can book your perfect night so no need to worry about missing out. Food is pre-ordered before the show with the options of drinks too to ensure you have one to hand upon your arrival.

Rabbit in the Headlights is a great chance for new comedians to try their material out on a willing audience. Specially hand-picked for their talent, this new-act night lets rising stand-ups take you on a journey through their own funny thought process, testing your sense of humour and reactions. Although unpredictable but hopefully hilarious, you can sit safe in the confidence that these acts have been sought out specifically for their comic styling, sometimes being the most talked about up and coming performers. Brought to you from an awardwinning Fringe venue and hosted by BBC Radio 2 2011 New Comedy Award winner Angela Barnes. www.upstairsatthreeandten.co.uk

As married couple Kate and Deeley are visited by a blast from the past, they reminisce about their respective and collective histories. Rivalries begin to emerge, in which memory becomes a weapon, and each character battles to prove the veracity of their version of events. But has their judgement been affected by the psychological and strategic needs of the present? This haunting elegy to lost youth and hope examines the point at which memory merges into spontaneous creation, and how the past is always inescapably present. Directed by Steven O’Shea, Old Times comes to The New Venture Theatre from Fri 17 Dec - Sat 25 Jan.

www.betty-lou.co.uk Most of the time you will find me lazing about in a pair of battered jeans, Converse trainers, and a top two sizes too small. The far-too-small top has nothing to do with any sort of dubious fashion statement, it is more a case of refusing to believe that all the food reviews and lack of exercise has had a detrimental effect on my waistline. However, what I begun to realise a while ago when I started looking after my hair, is that every fashion-failure and love-handle gets completely ignored if you have a gorgeous mane. Rather than standing at the Christmas party worried that my arse could reasonably be given its own postcode, I could be swishing my beautiful locks with such confidence the women from the L’Oreal adverts would be jealous. The salon that proved this to me was Betty Lou’s at the bottom of Preston Street.

VINTAGE STYLING

Now let me give you an insight into my previous experience with salons. I’ve got naturally very dull mousey-brown, not particularly well conditioned, long-ish hair. I decided that I was ready to take the plunge and go a bit daring- pillar-box red to be exact. Naming no names, the first salon I tried told me that they would dye it red, and all would be fantastic: they dyed it purple with red streaks, and all was not fantastic. The second salon did a bit better, it was definitely more red, but tinged with orange as well. I’ve also had flu that has stuck around longer than the colour did. It was at this point, at the edge of follicle despair, that I visited the lovely Liz Samways, owner of Betty Lou’s Vintage Salon. She assured me that yes, I would most definitely end up with a luscious bright red, and that no, it would not wash out straight away. It sounds like a cliché, but visiting the salon for the first time was genuinely like an afternoon with friends. There was none of the awful forced conversation, and none of the worry that the stylist was going to do what the hell they wanted, irrespective of my wishes. Liz listened, suggested a couple of layers to add volume, found the most PERFECT colour imaginable, and merrily chatted to me for the entire duration.

Vintage Salon - 1920’s to Modern Day

In my previous experiences at salons, even if the conversation is decent, I have found the atmosphere and decorative order to be either sterile or utterly boring. Betty Lou’s is completely vintage, beautifully decorated, and pipes through 50’s classics which enhance the relaxed and very cool vibe. However if you were thinking it was just hair that Betty Lou’s specialised in then you would be very much mistaken. For a special night out, or just because you fancy a change of look, they will set and style your hair to vintage perfection. Taking roughly an hour and a half, this comes with a very reasonable £28-£38 price tag. They also have a range of kooky, show-stopping manicures and pedicures, 50’s inspired clothing, competitively priced beauty treatments and a downstairs studio where you will be made to look like, and photographed as a vintage beauty. Liz and the whole team are the sort of people that you would look forward to catching up with, especially when the results are so fantastic, and her salon stands out as something exceptional amongst the carbon-copied, generic salons that occupy vast areas of Brighton and Hove. Going to the salon, soaking up the atmosphere, and laughing with the stylists and beautician seems like an event in itself, rather than a means to an end. So rather narcissistically I feel it appropriate to end with myself, and my hair. The cut and blowdry came in at £32, with the full head of colour, with Liz, for an additional £35.My hair was still kept long and not over-cut, but was in a condition it had probably not been in for at least ten years. The layers made my face look softer (no easy feat), and the feathering around the front made it look current and funky. The colour was a pillar-box red of my dreams, and Liz even blow-dryed it to my exact specifications. I can’t remember a time that I have received so many compliments, and I now have my friends begging me to keep my hair the same colour forever. Liz and your lovely bevvy of girls, you have made one normally rather scruffy lady feel very happy indeed. BY LUCY HALLETT

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug When we last saw the extraordinary team of a wizard, a timid hobbit and some vivacious dwarves; they were escaping the Misty Mountains and Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) had already gained a souvenir of his travels, although somewhat dishonestly. This December, Peter Jackson takes us back into the world of The Hobbit as the curious heroes; led by famed warrior Thorin Oakenshield, continue their journey to take back the dwarves’ gold from Smaug the Dragon. If you are a fan of the first installment and Jackson’s previous work with the ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy, then prepare for a similar adventure of epic proportions as Thorin and company must take on the dangerous Mirkwood Forest without the help of wise Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen). This is all before they are even to encounter the terrifying winged beast that possesses all their precious treasure.

Walt Disney’s Frozen 3D - December

In an effort to avoid her ability coming to fruition, Elsa (voiced by Idina Menzel) isolates herself to try and suppress this magic. However, her mounting emotions cause a catastrophic event where she accidentally sends the kingdom of Arendelle into a state of eternal winter. It is now up to Elsa’s sister Anna (Kristen Bell) to find her sister and save the kingdom. FILM

DANNY’S DEBUT AT THE DUKE’S By Wayne Imms

I think it’s fair to say that Danny Boyle is one of Britain’s favourite and most respected film directors. The Oscarwinning Slumdog Millionaire, his eighth feature film, garnered massive worldwide popularity and propelled Boyle into the big leagues. Possibly as a result of this, he was honoured with putting together the spectacular and memorable 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony, firmly planting Boyle in the category of ‘national treasure’. Considering my favourite Danny Boyle film is Shallow Grave, now released almost twenty years ago, I’ve arranged a screening at the Duke of York’s in January. Following its screening, there’ll be an onstage interview with actress Kerry Fox, producer Andrew Macdonald and composer Simon Boswell. Its host is Amy Raphael, author of Danny Boyle: Creating Wonder published in March, it’s a wonderfully revealing and insightful book which helps lift the lid on one of Britain’s most influential directors. Joining Amy is Andrew Macdonald, one of the UK’s most accomplished film producers. As well as Shallow Grave, he collaborated with Danny Boyle on Trainspotting, 28 Days Later, Sunshine and The Beach. Andrew also produced The Last King of Scotland, Never Let Me Go, Dredd and Sunshine on Leith. He is also co-founder of DNA Films, one of the UK’s most successful production companies. Completing the trio is Simon Boswell, a BAFTA-nominated film and television composer. His superb score for Shallow Grave greatly enhances its tension and drama. Simon’s other credits include Hackers, Angelina Jolie’s major debut feature film; Jack and Sarah, The ABCs of Death and television drama The Lakes by Jimmy McGovern. With the plug for the event out of the way, let’s get back to the film itself. As I mentioned, Shallow Grave is my favourite of Boyle’s work. With its excellent, wholly gripping storyline and simmering tension, a criticism that could be levied against the film is that the audience doesn’t really care about the characters. Let’s face it- they aren’t the most likeable bunch, and yes, it is hard to warm to such selfish individuals. However, they’re excellently played by Christopher Eccleston, Ewan McGregor and Kerry Fox. For those of you not familiar with the plot, it’s a dark tale of three flatmates who find the dead body of a newly arrived flatmate, played by Keith Allen. Following the body’s discovery, they find themselves in possession of

a case filled with money; loads of the stuff. What begins as a somewhat comedic film with the hilarious ‘auditioning’ of potential flatmates, quite swiftly turns into a very suspenseful and a fairly horrific tale of greed. Despite his impressive debut, it was Trainspotting, released two years later just after Britpop exploded, that firmly established Boyle as a major filmmaker. The gritty but slick film was perhaps best known for its startling druginduced visuals, fast-moving style and its soundtrack, mainly comprising of songs by the era’s biggest guitar acts. Shallow Grave is eminently more straightforward and possessed much less hype. It has a similar premise to Sam Raimi’s great thriller A Simple Plan from 1998. The Evil Dead and Spider-Man director’s film also finds three friends in possession of a huge amount of cash, before death and destruction ensues. Shallow Grave’s cinematography by Brian Tufano whose credits include Trainspotting, Quadrophenia and Billy Elliot, is particularly impressive. Tufano’s use of lighting, particularly when Eccleston’s character is prowling around the attic and when the trio are burying the body in the darkness, is really effective. I was surprised and impressed to recently learn that the interior of the flat was actually filmed in a specially constructed studio set. This was partly to ensure that there was enough space for the required shots. Even if you’re an avid film-watcher, I would quite understand if Shallow Grave has so far passed you by. However, I would urge you to consider visiting the grand old Duke of York’s in the New Year to see it on the big screen. I’ve found that when revisiting some of my favourites in the cinema, including previous events I’ve organised such as Alien and Raiders of the Lost Ark, they seem new, fresh and quite like different films and most importantly joyous to watch in the cinema. Tickets for January 12th’s Shallow Grave 20th anniversary event are available at www.soundstageevents.co.uk

THE DYKE BY LUCY HALLETT

l a c o L y l d n e i r F the

So it’s Sunday. All the regrets of the weekend come flooding through. ‘Did I really say that to him?, I didn’t say she was fat’, ‘Nah… I never meant it like that’. Yes, we’ve all been there. Every awful memory since Friday’s ‘quiet night out’ seems like a sledgehammer bashing in the only sensible bit of brain you have left. Well, there’s really only one thing for it; let’s stuff our guilty little faces with a roast. This would seemingly be easy: it’s Brighton, there’s loads of good places. I’m a Brightonian, and the amount of shitty roasts I’ve had could fill a spread sheet. If somebody tells me they do ‘good roasts’ I view them with the sort of scepticism I would somebody that tells me ‘they can moonwalk as well as Michael Jackson’. With this sort of angry-faced mentality I dragged myself along to The Dyke, on Dyke Road, to see if I should be clapping my hands in glee, or shooting them a vengeful look for making my last ebb of a weekend even worse. Let us start with the fact it has an open fire. A beautiful little haven of warmth. Then there’s the lovely atmosphere, good and not try-hard music, families having a genuinely nice time, decent art work… I was starting to feel like maybe the end of the weekend might be a good un’. The roast menu isn’t cheap (£13.95 for beef, lamb and venison), and £12.95 for the pork, chicken, etc. I’ll happily pay an extra quid for a good roast, so when Connie, a rather gorgeous and delightful girl came over to take our orders, I was hoping it would be worth it. Our roast arrived…. It looked ridiculously good. My beef was cut thinly and stacked so high that nobody could ever

accuse The Dyke of scrimping. My dining companion’s Pork looked like they had served half a pig, so already I was pretty impressed. Now these weren’t roasts without vegetable friends, oh no, they had, wait for it…. Kale, peas, carrots, red cabbage, roast potatoes, swede mash, Yorkshire puddings, parsnips. Everything was cooked so that it had bite, and seemed like it had been cooked for your plate, and your plate only. This is a rare occurrence for such a popular pub. It was really quite excellent. Filling but really ‘clean-tasting’, which is difficult for a meal that essentially derives from filling bellies to the max. Then there was the dessert menu. Now regular readers will know I find it difficult to deviate from anything comprised of chocolate, but in the spirit of fair play I went for the Sticky Toffee Pudding (£5.95) and my companion went for the Crème Brulee (£5.95). As with the roasts, these were presented rather beautifully, but to steal a well-known phrase, ‘the proof is in the pudding’. The Sticky Toffee Pudding was light as a feather, and sat rather majestically in a beautiful pool of very nicely-spiced toffee sauce, and vanilla ice cream so good you could see the vanilla pod specks. My companion’s Crème Brulee was also superb. The chocolate shortbread biscuits added a really nice buttery element to the delicacy of the brulee, while the fresh fruit cut through the richness adding a sharp dimension. I walked out not caring if I’d buggered up the previous two days, and just being happy that my weekend ended on such a high note. THE DYKE 218 Dyke Rd, Brighton, BN1 5AA

BOHEMIA BY LUCY HALLETT

Cocktail Lounging

Now I’m sure I’m not alone in asserting that we’ve all had those days where it seemed like a really good idea to try and make our own cocktails. For me, these moments are usually after a day getting sunburnt on the beach, running out of red wine, and realising that I’ve got quite a lot of random spirits (not the ghostly kind) lurking around my flat. Joyfully adding vodka with blackcurrant squash, grenadine with gin, does not a cocktail make. Sometimes I’ve even managed to convince myself that I’ve stumbled across some winning combination, but alas no; a second opinion always renders my efforts useless. So with my past mixing-mishaps at the front of my mind, I trotted along to Bohemia to see how the professionals do it. Sitting comfortably in Meeting House Lane, Bohemia radiates an old-school charm akin to the 1920’s jazz bars. Sumptuous and mesmerising; it is not only the red illuminating glow that makes this place seem so luxurious. Every detail is meticulous. Feeling slightly smug, I hoped the cocktails were not as good as the façade; at least then I could bitch about something. We were greeted by Lucas… the only way to describe him accurately is as the same as realising you got the best mark in the year for an essay. In short he was warm, friendly, unpretentious and happy-as-Larry. I thought the first decent test would be an Espresso Martini (£9.00). Lucas put a whole load of fresh ground coffee, cardamom, and chocolate bitters at the bottom of the glass. Then there was the normal Tia Maria, Baileys, Vodka, and then a freshly made Espresso. It looked so perfect I was ready to fight him for first drinking rights… then the dry ice appeared. Geez….. I felt like an extra in ‘Terminator’. Fair play though-it was sublime. Unfaultable. Damn.

I next decided that a variation on the classic, a Chocolate Martini (£9.50), might trip the professionals up. As a new addition to the cocktail menu, I reasoned that it might be fallible. I am an unashamed chocolate lover. Don’t get me wrong; I won’t eat square after square, but if you are putting it in my dessert or my drink you better be an aficionado. It was smooth, stunningly tasty, and complete with a white chocolate foam. Yes, really. Before I started flailing around in a very un-ladylike manner I tried a couple more. Tommy’s Margarita With a Sea Salt Air (£8.50) may sound like something Mary Poppins would shout before she flew off with her umbrella, but it was phenomenal. It had all the normal aspects of a really good Margarita (El Jimador, Agave Syrup, etc), but there was a foam circumference that tasted like Brighton. Salty, butoh-so-Brighton. I then sampled something I can be a bit of a snob about: hot winter drinks. We’ve all had the mulled wine loveliness, but I long for something a step above. This arrived in the form of the Rockinghorse Rocket (£8.00). Mount Gay Eclipse Rum, apple juice, lime, maple syrup, cinnamon… It’s hard to find a bad point. Then I learnt that £2.00 of every Rockinghorse Rocket went to the Rockinghorse Charity… I was sold. I was more than Impressed with Bohemia. It’s not the sort of place you would go to get trashed. It’s the sort of place once you got trashed, got fired, got a new job, got a promotion, and wanted to celebrate you would go to. Bravo Bohemia, I can’t say a bad word about you. BELLA BAR BY LUCY HALLETT

t n a r u a t s Bar Re

I like to think I learnt a decent amount in school. Don’t get me wrong, I discovered how a sweet little smile can get you out of a few scrapes, the best places to have a secret ciggie, and last but not least, how to forge some pretty convincing notes omitting attendance from P.E. But it wasn’t all fun and high jinx… oh no. There was the spectre of exams hanging over us all like the sword of Damocles, so it was always useful to learn a few literary terms that could be thrown into exams. One of these that particularly captured my imagination (probably because I can be pretty dramatic) was the term ‘pathetic fallacy’- the attribution of human characteristics to elements within nature. It is with this in mind that I describe the weather on the day I visited Bella Bar Restaurant on St James’ Street as containing a mocking rain. Not heavy enough to seem angry, nor light enough to seem playful, it hovered somewhere in-between, mocking those of us going about our day. My companion and I scampered into the café-come-restaurant and sat down. Without being overly harsh, everything was just a bit sticky and grubby. The laminated menu’s were on their last legs, and everything was slightly mismatched - not in the ‘we’re-so-kooky-ithurts’ way of some places, more in a ‘we-just-don’t-careabout-presentation’ vein. In the interest of fairness we decided to order a bit of everything. After all, it’s not often you can order a full roast dinner at midday on a weekday is it? I went for the Bella Breakfast (£5.50) which consists of two eggs, bacon, sausage, a hash brown, beans and two slices of toast. I despise baked beans (scary little blobs floating in a sea of orange), so asked the waitress to leave them off. My

companion ordered a Beef Roast with all the trimmings (£6.90). As an afterthought, I also decided to opt for some calamari (£4.90) to share. After waiting a short amount of time, the waitress came over and actually threw the cutlery on the table. Maybe she had missed her vocation as a shot-putter. Her dour expression and clear disdain for the customers indicated that maybe this was going to harder to stomach than I first thought. The calamari arrived with a limp salad that was tinged with brown. There was no tartare, aioli or mayonnaise to accompany it, so it made for a very sad plate indeed. It was so tough I felt like I was biting into a wellington boot, so this was mainly left untouched. My companion’s roast was slightly better. Swimming to point of overflowing in what looked like Bisto, the beef was actually plentiful and tender. The vegetables were passable, and for £6.90, if you were looking for something to fill a hole, and weren’t too fussed with presentation, you could do worse. My breakfast arrived, looking slightly odd. The two fried eggs were semi-decent, the hash browns although clearly from a packet were well cooked and the toast was plentiful. However the solitary sausage has to be one of the vilest things masquerading as meat I have ever had the misfortune of eating. Likewise, the bacon was so fatty I was considering putting it up for the new series of ‘Biggest Loser’. Looking around, I realised I hadn’t seen a single smile, or happy face. The only laughter was from our table at the standard of the food. We left pretty hurriedly, and I looked to the rain, waved a fist, and realised that maybe rather than mocking me, it had just been trying to warn me not to enter Bella Bar Restaurant.
