FEBRUARY 2014

Since our last issue a few things have happened. Apparently they’ve discovered detailed plans concerning the Ark’s construction. So we’ve set our interns to work, building a replica we can berth outside BN1 Towers. It looks like we’ll be very popular for the rainy season. Other depressing news reaching us is the demise of The Source magazine. It was a magazine that changed the face of Brighton’s nightlife, so we’re sad to see their print version go. Good news is they’re continuing an online presence, so they’ll still be smashing it in The Great Escape’s music quiz.

Welcome to February. After the cultural wasteland that is January, the City is quickly waking up again with loads of amazing events just days away. It’s also Valentine’s Day, so there could be few surprises for everyone.

WHALEFEST FUNDRAISER Green Door Store Sun 23 Feb The Green Door Store throws open its doors for a free event, to raise awareness of March’s Whalefest event, on Sun Feb 23. It’ll feature a line-up of Brighton’s best punk/ hardcore/sludge/rock bands, all playing to highlight the work done by Whalefests in their two main campaigns, one to end Orca captivity, the other to preserve the planet’s last 55 maui’s dolphins. The Black Fish, who work across Europe to expose and challenge illegal and destructive, fishing practices, will also have a stand. There’ll also be a screening of The Black Fish’s film animation Losing Nemo at the beginning of the night.

We’ve been going interview crazy this month, with an exclusive chat with Foxes, taking a trip through the mind of Derren Brown and waking up Scroobious Pip. If you look at our shiny new website, then you’ll find even more features and interviews to thrill and amaze. We’re also getting physical with a look at Brighton Science Festival and the upcoming Brighton Half Marathon. Obviously we’ve got all the usual previews, guides and cultural tips for the month. Grab your wellies, we’re heading out!

NEW

Ever found yourself wandering the streets after last orders and not ready for the night to end? The Late Lounge was born out of an ex-nightclub manager’s realisation that the only late night/early morning clubbing he and his fellow industry peers tried were unenthusiastic and reluctant attempts to find a drink and warmth. Offering cosy Chesterfields, roaring fires, strong cocktails and a superior selection of booze and chilled House, The Late Lounge makes for a tempting finish to your evening. With a license until 5am on weekends and various drink deals during the week (Tuesday boasts some of the City’s best ‘Two for One Cocktails’), this tranquil and inviting bar may just be the definitive saviour of Brighton’s late night scene.

With Fanfarlo’s third album, Let’s Go Extinct, turning out to be part concept album, part beautiful pop record, we’ve been getting a little bit excited by this mob. Released last month on the band’s own label New World, the album marks a return to the warmth and liveliness of the band’s debut, Reservoir. Borrowing freely from the band’s favourite music, they’ve created something utterly modern and entirely their own. The band is touring this month as well, including a visit to Brighton, so if you are looking for something tuneful, without being out-and-out pop, then you could do worse than checking out this enormously inventive band.

Indie rock trio Little Comets figured out a great way to get themselves noticed, hold some impromptu live shows in unlikely places. So they spent time popping up on the Underground, or in Marks & Spencers bakery aisle, giving the fans a 30 second burst, before being led away by security. This unconventional approach attracted the attention of both music fans and record labels. Since then they’ve released two excellent LPs, 2011’s In Search of the Elusive Little Comets and 2012’s Life is Elsewhere. After an extensive and exhausting US tour last summer, their home-grown fans are getting treated to a string of UK shows, including a date at Brighton. They’ve got a lively cheeky sound, as you’d expect from a lively cheeky band. www.littlecomets.com

TWENTY ONE PILOTS The Haunt // Mon 17 Feb

PHAROAHE MONCH Concorde 2 // Fri 21 Feb

Already kicking up a fuss around the globe with their energetic live sets and schizoid fusion of Hip-Hop, Pop and plain, good old fun, twenty | one | pilots’ Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun have finally got themselves signed to Fueled by Ramen after two self-financed albums.

Brighton welcomes back Pharoahe Monch on for another hip-hop master class. As much an academic or activist as a rapper, Monch is known for his complex lyrics, complex delivery, and multisyllabic rhyming, which has made him (arguably) one of the best MCs of all time.

Their third album Vessel, a genre-bending behemoth of great music, has just dropped, and so they’re bringing their amazing live show to the UK. Hints of everything from MGMT to Foals to Eminem to Flobots to Hellogoodbye, pervade their music. Shaking up the humdrum world of characterless pop, these guys are definitely one to watch.

Approaching writing and recording lyrics in the same way as you’d write or film a movie, he’s been on good form recently, especially after the release of his incendiary album, PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) last year. Do expect getting yourself educated, if there’s one thing Mr Monch wants to raise its awareness. Don’t expect any objectification of women, only appreciation for their Marxist feminist dialectic.

BETH NIELSEN CHAPMAN St George’s Church // Sat 22 Feb Beth Nielsen Chapman released her new album, UnCovered, last year. Featuring songs she’s written but never recorded (despite them providing hits for other artists) it includes seven US chart toppers. The Country star is also visiting the UK for a string of live dates this month, including a visit to Brighton. An emotionally resonant, heartbreakingly honest artist that never slips into overwrought sentimentality or cliché, if you’ve heard of her, then you’ll need no further word of Chapman’s considerable talents as both a singer and songwriter. If you haven’t, then just stop for a moment and listen. www.bethnielsenchapman.com

THE PRESIDENTS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA Concorde 2 // Sun 23 Feb Purveyors of the finest absurdist rock, the Presidents of the United States of America, have reunited and got back in the studio to cook up a new album. This whimsical trio has broken up and gotten back together a few time in their career, which has only added to their cult status. The band also re-released their eponymous multiplatinum debut last year, along with a DVD packed full of their hit videos plus live, and interview, footage. Nine years on, the songs still sound smart, tuneful and exhilarating. PUSA still hold up. It’s going to be rocking! www.concorde2.co.uk

BN1 CHATS WITH...

SCROOBIUS PIP Scroobius Pip, fearless defender of Hip Hop’s five elements, owner of some fierce face furniture and one of the finest lyricists this country has ever produced. He’s remained resolutely independent of any scene, celebrity circuit or music genre. I’m already grateful to have caught him just as he’s heading out for his biggest ever tour. I become even more appreciative upon realising Mr Pip is currently spending his eighth day in bed following a tonsil infection. “I’d rather be spending these weeks being a bit more active and prepping,” he glumly admits. “It’s a killer. I don’t have days off, but I’ve had to spend a week in bed. Not even a week in bed watching TV, just cowering under the duvet.” From day one, the attitude that he and fellow conspirator dan le sac have held is that it’s great to have hits on Youtube, but the hard work and grafting isn’t over yet. Once you achieve any level of fame, the next obstacle you face is getting on the road for three or four solid months, playing in front of as many people as you can and earning their respect. Starting out, his idea of a kick-starter was to work for five years in HMV and save his own money, subsequently

touring the country whilst living in a Space-Cruiser. Since emerging with the hipster-baiting “Thou Shall Always Kill” he and dan le Sac have been making some of the finest, and possibly most cerebral, Electronic music this country’s heard for a while. Reportedly he once eschewed the potential of a life-changing deal with one of the major record companies, an arrangement that undoubtedly would force him to compromise some of his principles, in preference to the freedom offered by a smaller outfit. After seeing their third album Repent Replenish Repeat chart at #22 last year, bringing with it a wealth of critical acclaim, these Essex-born chaps are popping out for 41 UK and European dates, with possibly more to follow. “Europe’s the interesting part. The crowds won’t be as big, and they won’t be as easily adoring. But we’ll work at it and win the creeds over.” For many, taking time off from your weekly XFM radio show, the We.Are.Lizards club night in Shoreditch and running your regular film club at The Prince Charles Cinema in central London, would serve as a rest period before the excesses of the live circuit.

BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 11 ]

But it seems Hammer of the Gods style tour shenanigans are not high on his agenda, despite how much his road crew pester him to join their post-show

“They’re like: ‘Seriously? You’ve been on tour for a month and not come out to get drunk with us once!’ It’s that thing about wanting to protect my voice. I pride myself on putting on a good show. People have paid a lot of money.” sessions.

There’s no dividing line between Mr Pip and his fans, happy gig patrons will often find him or dan manning the merchandise stand. He relishes being approachable, so he can’t understand many of the new practices in touring. “It kills me that you can pay for meet and greet tickets. These people have paid to get in and are singing every word of your songs…“ He’s adamant every ticket sold should entitle the giggoer to a meet and greet, especially at a time when people are struggling with the economic situation. This enlightened attitude towards his fans is a prime reason he’s enjoying enormous underground success, selling out most of his shows with little trouble. In short, he’s eager to keep it real. “People are investing a lot in us, so we want to do our best to put on a good show.” Many view Scroobius Pip as a spokesman of some kind. But he denies that he actively sits at home deliberating over what message he can attach his music to. That’s not to say he’s above writing something so a discussion can be started... “It’s good to start these conversations, but I’m not going to start claiming I’m the man with the answers.” So how about those artists do possess aspirations to be a vehicle for social change? He’s not certain anyone bears the responsibility for that, saying he struggles with the pressure society places on celebrities. “We say: ‘You’re famous now, so you better up your game.’ Personally it’s often a thing I like to discuss and engage in, but if everyone’s music was tackling the same subjects, it’d be boring.” Catch dan le sac vs Scroobius Pip live at Eastbourne’s Winter Garden Floral Hall on Wed 30 April. Their album Repent Replenish Repeat is our now on Sunday Best Recordings. BY STUART ROLT Image: © JoLi Studios www.lesacvspip.co.uk

It’s good to have a plan, especially if you actually manage to put your ideas into practice. Most of us never get to realise our childhood fantasies of becoming a Pop-star, no matter how much posing for the mirror we did. Not so if you are 22 year old Louisa Rose Allen, better known to the world as Grammy Award winning Pop sensation Foxes. Apparently she’s had a plan from the start, even as a youngster she was carefully working on how to turn a dream into a reality. Now on the verge of releasing her debut album Glorious, she’s naturally excited about her years of work paying off. “I’ve stayed true to the music I wanted to make. I knew a year and a half ago and I know now,” she eagerly tells me. “I’m really happy I’ve stayed true, and I think it’s going to be the album that I’ll be proud of when I’m 90 and I look back. I always wanted to do that.” She’s enormously sweet, despite some stupid journalist delaying her lunch with inane questions like: “So what’s your favourite fox?” (Megan Fox, if you’re interested…) If anything she seems almost excited to chat with me, but not as excited as she is about the new album. “I’m very ready for it to come out now. I’ve done a lot of features this year, worked with lots of interesting people, which have been loads of fun. But now I’m ready to release my own body of work. I can’t wait.” A delicious slab of intelligent Pop, Glorious is a collection of old and new Foxes songs, crisply demonstrating the songwriting range she’s capable of. Internet favourites Echo and White Coats, live hits Holding Onto Heaven and Night Owls Early Birds all make an appearance, as do the euphoric strains of the singles Youth and Let Go For Tonight. “It’s really personal, all my music stems from stuff that’s happened or something that I’m experiencing. It’s like therapy for me.” Now, after her collaboration with Zedd on hit US single Clarity claiming that aforementioned Grammy for Best Dance Recording, smashing dancefloors the world over with various remixes of Youth and her appearance on Rudimental’s Right Here, you have to wonder if she’s truly aware of the growing attention focusing on her, or does she exist in a little bubble of her own? “I think I’m always in my own bubble, I’m like a big kid! “I was in Vegas, where I was counting down NYE. We drove up to the Palms, where I was doing it, and there was a massive billboard with my giant face. We’d been past Britney and Celine Dion, then me…” Meeting the responsibilities fame requires always means an adjustment. On a recent tour, after mentioning in an

interview her love of cake, Foxes found herself being presented with over 56 home-baked cakes. That’s not even counting the shop-bought ones. “I don’t think I’m famous yet. I can still go to Tesco’s in my pyjamas. But it’s never really been about the fame, it’s something that comes with success, but you just have to deal with it all.” There might be a few lessons in coping with celebrity life left for her, especially with using Twitter - that celebrated

“The other day I put a picture up of me and a cardboard cut-out of Usher for a joke. I put: ‘This is me and Usher at Christmas!’ People were posting: ‘That’s not Usher, she obviously Photoshopped him in!’ facilitator of mass misunderstanding.

She’s full of the enthusiasm that youth brings, chatting earnestly about her obsession with cake (again?), her love of early 90s Dance music and the best way to obtain a Nando’s Black Card. For a moment I begin to wonder if there’s a ‘planets nicest pop star’ competition happening soon. But one of her people confirms later that she really is this lovely. This exuberant wide-eyed freshness that pervades everything Foxes produces, has spilled over into the food flinging video for Let Go For Tonight, helping it clock up over 1.5 million YouTube views in little more than a week. “It was a dream of mine to do that music video since I was very young. I went to the record company, sat down and literally read out my diary. I said: ‘This is the next video. You have to do a giant food fight and shoot cake out of a cannon.’ There was definitely a moment of ‘She’s finally lost it!’ “I am a big kid, but there’s nothing wrong with that. There’s no point in taking anything too seriously. There could be worse messages to be putting out.” Catch Foxes live on Sun 2 March at Brighton Haunt. Her new single Let Go For Tonight is released on Mon 23 Feb, with debut Album Glorious arriving on Mon 12 May. www.iamfoxes.com // www.thehauntbrighton.co.uk By Stuart Rolt Photo Credit: Chad & Paul

For a decade, alt-rock phenomenon The Boxer Rebellion have been turning heads globally as a band known and admired for not sticking to the rulebook. “This band can alter your life,” said the UK’s NME Magazine, referring to the incredibly epic and ambitious, yet intimate and melodic nature of the band’s musical output.

In contrast, Mendelssohn’s beautiful Violin Concerto spins romantic melodies.

MATT WINNING: WORK IN PROGRESS

Sat 1 Feb

Thur 6 Feb Upstairs at Three and Ten

With the superb comedy coming to Upstairs at Three and Ten this February, it is no wonder that Sara Pascoe is getting ready to grace Brighton with a preview of her new solo show entitled ‘Versus History’. A guest on QI, Never Mind the Buzzcocks and Live at The Apollo, Pascoe will be entertaining the audience with material about her failed relationships, her parents’ and Henry VIII’s. This is all after she introduces Lou Sanders - named one of the top surrealist comics to look out for - and ‘hot new talent’ Rachel Stubbings to the stage.

Upstairs at Three and Ten This month will mark the arrival of one of the UK’s most exciting new comedians coming to Brighton to perform his work-in-progress show. Scottish comic Matt Winning was a finalist in the BBC New Comedy Awards 2012 as well as the Chortle Student Comedy Awards in 2010 and 2011 while also winning the Hilarity Bites New Act in 2011. You can expect some hilarious one-liners, lots of noise and some superb comedic observations. Don’t miss the chance to be one of the first to see Britain’s most unique new rib-ticklers before he embarks on his national tour this year.

LAUGHTERMARKET ANNUAL SPECIAL

BOOTHBY GRAFFOE: SCRATCH!

RABBIT IN THE HEADLIGHTS

Sun 19 Feb

Thur 20 Feb The Old Market

The Laughtermarket returns this February for an Annual Special with a blend of some of the best comics who vary from just being discovered and rising stars, to national TV names that are warming up before they hit the tour circuit.

Thur 20 Feb Komedia

Upstairs at Three and Ten

Some of the talent for this night includes Katherine Ryan, who has appeared on popular shows like Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Mock the Week and QI. Our very own Brighton resident Zoe Lyons will also be gracing the stage along with Joe Wells - who has been seen on tour with Alexei Sayle – and the musical James McDonnell.

After all the Christmas spending, ArchSurrealist Boothby Graffoe comes to the Komedia this February to look at the weird world of the UK lottery scratch card. In his own witty way, Graffoe looks at who buys scratch cards, how many they might buy, what odds are there in winning and perhaps one of the most asked questions – what would you do if you won. Through the vehicle of comedy, Boothby will keep you enthralled as you contemplate the idea of such a small but potentially lucky card. Will he win during the show and more importantly; will he share any of his winnings?

Rabbit in the Headlights is a great chance for new comedians to try their material out on a willing audience. Specially hand-picked for their talent, this new-act night lets rising stand-ups take you on a journey through their own funny thought process, testing your sense of humour and reactions. Although unpredictable (but hopefully hilarious) you can sit safe in the confidence that these acts have been sought out specifically for their comic styling, sometimes being the most talked about up and coming performers. Brought to you from an awardwinning Fringe venue and hosted by local comic Aidan Goatley.

FESTIVAL OF THE SPOKEN NERD: FULL FRONTAL NERDITY

TIERNAN DOUIEB

Sat 22 Feb Upstairs at Three and Ten

Mitch Benn has a new show coming to the Komedia this February. This time, Benn will be combining his love of music with his Scouse upbringing and also focusing on his obsession with Liverpool’s famous boys; The Beatles. Over the years, many people have claimed to be the fifth Beatle but they can’t all be right. In this show, the musical satirist will explore the legacy of the Fab Four and his tenuous connections to these Liverpudlian legends. Whether you are a music expert or not bothered either way, you are sure to enjoy Mitch Benn’s captivating and well-researched show.

With a sell-out show in Edinburgh making these boys a much wanted commodity, The Old Market are happy to host Festival of the Spoken Nerd as they bring their new show to Brighton this February. To coincide with the Brighton Science Festival, these guys combine fascinating science stuff with significantly funny comedy.

Tiernan Douieb’s debut show at Edinburgh in 2009 was a sell-out success, gaining him great popularity for Fringe shows in the years following that. This month, the bearded comedian brings his new show to Brighton, entertaining his audience about the internet being too loud, politics and spiders.

With a stand-up mathematician, street scientist and cheeky songstress, this night promises to provide laughter, fun and a little bit of science to satisfy any curiosity. With over a million views on YouTube, this is your chance to be wowed by them in person.

Named by Mark Thomas as one to watch and mentioned by the British Comedy Guide as having a ‘hugely engaging onstage presence’, he has performed his friendly style of comedy globally and Upstairs at Three and Ten are delighted to be able to bring you his brand new material.

Theatre Royal This new one-man show ‘Derren Brown: Infamous’, promises to demonstrate once again why he’s considered one of the world’s most renowned live performers; a dark manipulator of magic and mind control.

The Nightingale

Dome Studio Theatre Phil Porter’s strange tale of two people with sheltered childhoods (and a fox called Scruffilitis) is dysfunctional, voyeuristic and darkly funny. The painfully self-aware piece is part romantic comedy and part tale of our times, exploing themes of loneliness and obsession.

Brown has toured six shows since 2003 and has been watched by an estimated audience of over 2 million people, winning two prestigious Olivier Awards, along the way.

Annabella, rich and beautiful, has her choice of suitors, but she shares a forbidden love with her brother Giovanni. Their love is both a scandal and a sin, so they must try to keep it secret in a brutal, unforgiving world but their defiance of the Catholic Church leads to a web of lies, deception, intrigue and revenge. Pursuing their forbidden passion culminates in inevitable violence and bloodshed, in this dark and sensual Jacobean revenge drama. Set in the mid-1600s, John Ford’s tragedy of illicit passion and bitter retribution is one of the most controversial works in English literature. Now it gets a new production with early modern dress.

DERREN BROWN BY STUART ROLT Even the first time Derren Brown speaks to me I suspect he’s playing tricks. Greeting me by name as he picks up the phone is clearly an indication of the illusionist/hypnotist’s pre-cognitive powers. Or it could simply show the attention he pays to his diary. Regardless, it’s a little spooky. You have to wonder if his friends ever suspect he’s messing with them. “It’s not something that I think about,” he tells me. “It would be odd to be that sort of person in real life, because it’s so controlling. “I have had friends who said the first few times they met me, in hindsight, they thought I was doing stuff, everything I said or did was some kind of calculated move. It’s not something I pay any attention to, so it ends up not being an issue.” He’s charming, fascinating and occasionally poetic in conversation. He gladly shares stories of his dreams, advice from other celebrities and his recent awkward gym-based encounter with Dynamo. So he’s more than happy to talk to me about the UK tour that’ll be keeping him busy until June. Spending five nights at Brighton’s Theatre Royal from Tue 11 Feb. the new show, Infamous, sees Britain’s most famous illusionist in a new stripped back performance, less driven by showmanship and big production values. “We just wanted to make it feel more personal. I did start off with wanting it to feel more like an acoustic set. In some ways it was a brave move. But quite a few people have said it’s their favourite so far.” Brown has a well-documented love of touring, saying every night there’s something he can carry into the following night’s performance, making it an on-going process. To prepare for a tour of this magnitude takes Brown, and long-term writing partner Andy Nyman, a month of writing and another month rehearsing. But, because of the show’s reliance on random audience members, there’s only so much preparation that can be done. “That first night is when you find out if people will respond in the way you thought, in the people taking part or in terms of the suggestibility you try to engender in the audience, if things will fall into place.” Touring means Brown gets to go out for six months with a

group of friends, enjoying a schedule that frees him to read or write in the daytime, something he doesn’t get time for whilst on TV projects. But it remains the actual performance, and the adrenaline rush it provides, that brings Brown to life. “As an actor you could be playing a very difficult, sombre or painful role in a play and it wouldn’t be that enjoyable to do. Doing a show like this is just a delight, because the feelings you create are very positive for everyone. Having that every single day is just fantastic… and it never gets tiring.” As Brown’s stage act has developed and grown so have his productions for television. Where earlier shows were trickdriven, slowly they’ve evolved into exploring the power of suggestion. “It interests me in my normal life… what makes people happy and how we should live. These are the questions that used to occupy people in ancient times, but we don’t really think about them so much anymore.” Now his art is up against the likes of YouTube and its comments section, where thousands of people can watch an act and ponder amongst themselves on its mechanics.

“It’s part of the fun of it. If you are doing something that’s amazing people, hopefully it’s an enjoyable experience, not just a puzzle to work out. But you can’t really fool people as solidly as you could before.” Brown admits that he once spent a lot of time trying to be impressive, so people would like him, but he learnt there are better ways to use your time. Far more important in getting people to like you is to truly understand the power of being nice. He believes ultimately the things that make people respond to you are really quite straightforward. “We all try to be like people we admire, such as those that are witty, clever and funny. But we forget that we don’t really like people that are that witty, clever and funny, unless they are also kind… and nice to be around.” Nice is an apt adjective to describe Brown. There’s an element of the playful prankster about him, especially when he’s interacting on stage with one of the subjects of his show. He’s using a diverse and influential range of skills to entertain and amaze thousands of people every year.

But there still lies with me a concern that individuals with a similar skill set could be using them for less benevolent purposes. The power of suggestion and hypnosis, plus people’s capacity to respond to this, could explain much of the inexplicable behaviour in the world. “Of course some people will always take advantage, but it’s not quite the same as me using a skill that someone can then use for evil. “There’s just something about the human experience that makes us sometimes respond uncritically to authority figures, once you see it like that you realise it’s something that can be exploited, - and is.” www.atgtickets.com www.derrenbrown.co.uk Derren Brown’s Infamous runs at the Theatre Royal on Tue 11 - Sat 15 Feb, and then travels around the country until Sat 31 May. FILM

FORTY YEARS OF FILMGOING By Wayne Imms

Back in 1975, aged five (showing my age here), I made my very first cinema visit. The film, of course forty years ago, was the original of Gone in 60 Seconds. The film itself, a thriller consisting of a few car chases, isn’t significant. But this year being the fortieth anniversary of my first time as a cinemagoer is a milestone of significance for me. The first time, as with many of my earliest cinematic experiences, was at Maidstone’s Granada Cinema with my dad. I was never close to him, but maybe I should be grateful to him for introducing me to the cinema; a magical palace of imagination and great escapism. Some of my earliest films included Jaws 2, the original Star Wars trilogy and various James Bonds. The only Bond film the whole family went to was The Spy Who Loved Me, which I think remains my favourite of them. I remember that my mum, who was never into films, fell asleep during the screening. Superman was great to see on the big screen, in 1978, my favourite superhero film. My dad and I actually arrived halfway through it, then catching up on the first half. E.T was a highlight – I remember hiding my tears during a particularly moving scene. It seems that so many people’s first film at the cinema was a Disney one. My first was 1992’s Aladdin, which I thought was great. My earliest cinemagoing was enhanced by my dad treating me to, as well as the occasional hot dog, issues of Film Review magazine. I’d always been interested in behind the scenes stuff; how films and special effects were put together. Quite annoyingly for my dad, I’d often ask: “How did they do that?” Film Review was a great magazine; full of interviews, interesting insights into my favourite films and reviews on new releases. Years later in Maidstone (it wasn’t such a dull place in those days), I became heavily involved with hospital radio. I reflected my passion for films within radio by producing and presenting a weekly film show with the then MGM Cinema’s manager. We began by covering Jurassic Park, upon its 1993 release. It was quite a joy to record those shows and to cut up tapes on reel to reel machines, sometimes late at night in the studio, using audio film clips and soundtrack music. From an early age, I had gained a real interest and love of film music, especially scores of John Williams, the composer of Star Wars, E.T, Superman and Jurassic Park. Those films, the music and cinemagoing in general were always rather magical to me.

Aged thirty, I moved to Brighton and, of course, continued visiting the cinema, including the grand old, very old, the Duke of York’s, the UK’s oldest working cinema. The first film I saw there was a rerelease of The Exorcist; horror is certainly a favourite genre. It was great to finally see the classic on the big screen, but disappointing to hear some of the audience laughing in places. Why did they, and how dare they? A few years later, after conceiving the regular arts event, The Space, I arranged a Duke of York’s-based 30th anniversary screening of Alien and an interview with its editor Terry Rawlings and costume designer John Mollo. This was the first of my many film events; the latest was Shallow Grave. It was good to have the acclaimed director Ben Wheatley taking part in two of my events. He’s among many Brighton filmmakers in this highly creative city. Sometimes it seems full of budding producers, directors and off-camera people, which is a really good thing. It is great to live here, partly as Brighton has a real love for film and many people are, or want to be, part of the industry. Bringing successful filmmaking talent here via The Space and other events, and my regular piece in this magazine are rewarding ways for me to reflect my own love for cinema and film, which grew from my first cinema-going experience forty years ago. The cinema is somewhere I still love; definitely the best place to experience the magic of film.

FASHION

Tattoo art isn’t just about applying it to the body. Since we are coming up to the Brighton Tattoo Convention, our February fashion spread brings to light some of the studios that have put their designs to cloth and have a great range of T-shirts to buy. We also had the honour of showing off some items from a local alternative clothing brand, who pride themselves on making sure a percentage of each sale goes to charity.

Saints and Soldiers Apparel was started by husband and wife team Chris and Kerry Streeter in 2012. They wanted to make a difference with their brand so founded their own Charity foundation, The S&S Foundation. Each item is ethnically sourced, made here in the UK and for everything sold, money goes towards helping some great causes such as Help for Heroes and The African Wildlife Foundation.

Tattoo Workshop was established in April 2011 and artists Stewart Francis, Jed Harwood, Kate Mackay-Gill and Gary Burns strive to provide a variety of different tattoo styles to cater for all their customers’ needs. Just off London Road on Providence Place, Tattoo Workshop also showcase some fantastic art prints to buy.

Established in November 2007 and located on Upper North Street, Phil Kyle and the artists at Magnum Opus cover a wide range of styles to suit almost everyone’s taste; from traditional, realistic, Japanese, black and gray, large scale to tiny tattoos. They can help you find the tattoo that suits you.

RIDDLE & FINNS BY LUCY HALLETT

Fine Fish dining

I like animals. I really do. Yes, it can be somewhat confusing to cuddle up to my pet cat in the day, and march off and eat a whole host of less cute animals at night. Sorry ugly, less furry, less domesticated animals, I’m eating you… often. The big distinction is that we view some animals as pet-worthy, and some as fuel, and I’m certainly not going to argue. I would propose that anybody who has eaten a perfectly cooked, rare fillet steak is not going to marching for animal rights. However there’s a big ol’ grey area that rarely gets mentioned, and that is the consumption of fish. Fish are, to a whole host of families, pets. Most people have some vague childhood memory of Goldie floating face up, before being plonked unceremoniously down the toilet, and these same people (myself included) would think nothing of eating a tuna sandwich. This is why whenever I’m off to a fish restaurant I feel not even the slightest modicum of guilt about chomping away- until you learn to be a bit more exciting little fishy, you are going to end up on my dinner plate. With what could be described as a menacing gleefulness I arrived at Riddle & Finns, a very smart little restaurant at the beginning of Meeting House Lane. It bills itself as a Champagne and Oyster bar, due to its hefty selection of both, however it is also a restaurant in its own right, with a large well thought-out menu. The décor is minimalist

yet interesting. White and green ceramic tiles line the walls, while raised tables house beautiful candelabra complete with dripping white wax. It is visually impressive while being relatively sparse; no mean feat. They have a no-booking policy which means you have to hope serendipity is on your side, yet the place is always bustling and vibrant, so it’s clearly a strategy that works. Another quirk is that they seat you wherever is free, meaning unless you are in a group of 4 or 8, you’ll most likely be sharing a table with strangers. This can be a bit hit and miss. The first couple opposite us looked horrified at the decibels our conversation reached, which was unsettling, yet the second couple in the sitting were friendly and charming, so it’s effectively like a diner’s version of Russian roulette. Starters sit between the £5 and £10 mark, while the mains fluctuate much more wildly, with the cheapest main being the Squid and Shellfish Risotto at a not-too-shabby £12.95; the most expensive being the Lobster Fruits De Mer coming in at £40 a head. They offer a cost cutting pre-theatre menu Monday to Friday until 7.15pm with two options for each course and two courses for £12.95, so feeling the post-Christmas pinch, we went for that. I chose for the Mixed Shellfish Marinière, while my dining companion went for the Whitebait with Wasabi Mayo. There was a bit of a mix up, as we were initially served two

BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 41 ]

mains, before mentioning we hadn’t yet had our starters. These things happen, and it was a very busy service, so can be excused. When we got our starters the mixed shellfish was gorgeous with the marinière being some of the richest yet nicest I had ever sampled. The whitebait was crunchy and perfectly cooked, however the wasabi mayo could have benefitted from slightly more wasabi if I’m being picky. When it came to choosing the food itself we were reliant upon the waitress, as the £12.95 menu is only on the chalk board outside, so they have to dictate the dishes. Unfortunately our waitress didn’t remember a lot of the ingredients to one of the mains, so it made deciding tricky. Rather than leave, check the components, then return, she looked embarrassed and waited for us to decide. We opted for the Battered Fish and Chips with Salad and Tartare sauce and Fishcakes, Mange Tout, Spinach and a sauce which she hadn’t quite remembered. After thirty minutes our mains still hadn’t arrived. Ordinarily this wouldn’t be a problem, however for a menu that bills itself as ‘pre-theatre’ by this point would be worrying that you would be missing the start of the show. Five minutes later our mains arrived, the fishcakes being straddled by an egg! Now don’t for some reason think this was an unwelcome addition, or that I am some sort of Egg-Nazi, but it wasn’t mentioned in the description of the meal, and if for some reason (God knows why) you didn’t like eggs, this would be the equivalent of going on a blind date, only

to find out it was Jim Davidson waiting for you. Anyway, egg dramas aside, the fishcakes were spectacular. Cooked beautifully and lightly spiced with an array of Indian flavours they were melt-in-the-mouth. The mustard sauce (another un-mentioned accompaniment) complimented rather than over-powered the fishcakes, while the mange tout and spinach acted as a crunchy corner of divinity. The Fish and chips were less impressive. The fish was subtle and the batter wonderfully crunchy, but as a whole was woefully under-seasoned rendering it quite bland. The chips were actually fries, and rather disappointing ones at that. Riddle & Finns is without a doubt a rather magical little restaurant that undulates a warm, friendly and exciting atmosphere. For £12.95 the food really was a steal, and the mistakes that were made are easily rectified. However the service, although sweet and friendly, left an awful lot to be desired. I would snap off your hand at the opportunity to return, however if I walked past and saw it was as busy as the night I reviewed it, you might find me doing a sharp u-turn in search of some non-furry, non-domesticated animals to devour.

PIZZA 7 BY LUCY HALLETT

y r e v e r o f r u o v a A fl e week h t f o y a d

I’ve found that for pretty much all of my adult life I have been perpetually dieting. The funny thing is this perpetual dieting generally doesn’t consist of any real healthy eating. After weeks of gorging on chocolate, burgers and drinking the sugar equivalent of the ‘holidays-are-coming’ Christmas Coca Cola truck, I’ll re-assess my waistline, and sigh. I’ll then vow to live like a (hopefully) cooler version of Gillian Mckeith, buy some health books, and start updating Facebook about how I’ll be looking like Kate Moss in no time. Then stupid life gets in the way. There’s a birthday. There’s a party. Or in this case, there’s a pizza review. So I’ve started to think that maybe, as long as I’m not actually suffering from coronary disease, I should quit this whole dieting malarkey, and just enjoy the exciting world of food.

It was with this ethos in mind that I merrily leaped through the doors of Pizza 7 on Ship Street and seated myself in anticipation of my mort par le fromage. I really liked dark blue-walled and exposed wood and brick interior, the exotic beers that occupied their own little shelf, and the raised wooden tables encircled by mismatching metal chairs. The atmosphere was charming and friendly and it screamed of the sort of place which would be perfect for a group of friends. We opted for some tasty pork crackling (£1.50) to start, and some drinks. I kept with tradition and went for a large glass of the St Cirice, a French Syrah Grenache priced at £5.50 which was smooth and moreish. My dining companion went with Evan the restaurant manager’s recommendation of a bottle of the Founders All Day IPA pale ale (£5.50). He said it was incredibly tasty and drinkable, and produced a face much akin to a cat with the proverbial cream, so I knew it was a goodun’. For reasons of greed and fair reviewing, we opted for a selection of 4 of the 7 pizzas on offer. They arrived looking and smelling gorgeous. My first bite was of the plainest pizza;

a simple tomato sauce, and buffalo mozzarella (£7.95). It was beautifully executed, and showcased the high-quality of the sauce and cheese- something that can be found lacking from the generic chain restaurants that are so abundant in Brighton. The second pizza was topped with New Forest charcuterie, red chilli, mascarpone, chives and rocket (£9.75). The chilli provided a lovely warm background in which the phenomenal meats took centre stage. I thought the chives worked perfectly with the smokiness of the charcuterie, so by now I was thoroughly impressed. Next I forayed into an area I usually try to avoid- vegetarian pizza. The first was laden with aubergines, courgettes, mushrooms, parmesan, truffle oil and rocket (£9.25). The truffle oil was an inspired touch, and lifted the veg into almost orgasmic realms; each being cooked to perfection. The ratio between cheese and toppings was perfect as with all the pizzas, and I found myself actually looking forward to the next pizza, another vegetarian option. This was showered with roasted peppers, thyme, rocket, honey glaze, and local goat cheese (£8.75). The goat cheese had such a lovely flavour, and worked so naturally with the thyme that of all of them this was actually my favourite. How will I ever show my face to my carnivorous friends after choosing a vegetarian pizza over a meaty one?!

There’s a lot of Italian themed competition near Pizza 7 in the form of Ask, Zizzi, and Bella Pasta, but this place leaves them well and truly in the shadows. I loved the small but wellchosen menu, and the more extensive selection of drinks. If, like me, the idea of sitting around with pizza and good booze floats your boat then your next port of call simply has to be Pizza 7.
