FEBRUARY As we emerge from the still-smouldering wreckage of 2012, blinking in the watery sunshine and pushing aside the mangled corpses of our broken New Year resolutions, whilst futilely trying to find seasonsuitable footwear, a feeling of depression might be setting in for a few of us. Is there anything really happening this year? What have we actually got to look forward to in a post-2012 world? After such an incredible 12 months, both locally and nationally, it’s inevitable there’d be something of a national comedown from all the hysteria and celebrations, as we ponder a bleak and meaningless future that’s devoid of televised Olympic beach volleyball or giant free pop concerts. It’s all nonsense obviously. This year is going to be bigger and bolder than ever. We’ve only lost the luxury of being spoon-fed our supply of entertainment and excitement. Perhaps some of the delights awaiting you this year won’t be so obvious, but don’t worry, there are still plenty of scintillating leisure-time activities to distract you from the cold. Just this month there’s the Brighton Science Festival, restaurants everywhere offering some great deals and more bands coming to the city than you can shake a piece of the West Pier at. One consequence of the current recession is there’s a growing band of artists and performers looking to run pop-up venues and organise guerrilla events. So we’d be very surprised if Brighton isn’t more colourful, vibrant and fun in 2013 than ever before. This year will ultimately be whatever you all make of it. So we’ll be doing our very best to keep you informed, engaged and entertained with our regular pithy, and sometimes irreverent, monthly guides to what makes this city so special. If you ask us very nicely, we might even sort out a hot summer for you. I’ll get use out of these flip-flops, even if it kills me.

ROYAL PAVILION ICE RINK EXTENDED STAY Until 24th February Royal Pavilion After attracting thousands of visitors to the city, numerous celebrities and playing host to the Xmas episode of Don’t Tell The Bride, The Royal Pavilion Ice Rink now is extending its stay in the city centre until Feb 24. The Royal Pavilion has provided a stunning backdrop for the ice rink, which has been magical location to skate this winter, easily on par with the rinks at Rockefeller Center, Natural History Museum or Red Square. Hopefully it’ll remain so popular that The Pavilion will be forced to keep the rink open until summer… www.royalpavilionicerink.co.uk

SUSSEX BEER FESTIVAL 28th - 2nd March Hove Town Hall Sussex Beer Festival 2013 is almost here. Taking place on Thu 28 Feb – Sat 2 Mar, at Hove Town Hall, it’ll be the usual sprawling celebration of all things alcoholic and delicious (in a responsible fashion of course.) On offer to enthusiasts will be 36 ciders, over 40 bottled beers, wines, honey meads, fruit liqueurs and a list of tapped beers a yard long. The festival, now in its 23rd year, will be supporting local charity Dolphin House, a pioneering complementary health charity, providing healthcare for children throughout Brighton and Hove. www.sussexbeerfestival.co.uk

MUSIC PREVIEWS

Well February is finally here, January seemed to last forever and was ridiculously cold, and with it we can finally start thinking about spring. There is lots on this month so let’s get down to it with something that isn’t really a gig at all.

By Brad Middleton

LUX INTERIOR TRIBUTE NIGHT St James Tavern, February 2nd, Free entry Those wonderful dudes over at Stay Sick run a great weekly night at the Tavern but this time of year is always brightened with their glowing tribute to Lux Interior, deceased singer of the legendary US trash punks The Cramps. They Stay Sick crew are well-known lovers of this great band, even taking their name from a highly under-rated album from the late 1980s, and this is always a real event. Expect lots of great tunes from the band themselves as well as some classic songs by bands that inspired them in the first place along with some great live footage and videos to bring that ever so important visual celebration of what made The Cramps such a great band. Simply put they were one of the finest live spectacles I have ever been lucky enough to see.

I’M BEING GOOD Cowley Club, February 2nd, £3 donation For all of us who missed out on Dinosaur Jr tickets this is heaven-sent. It always annoying not being at a gig you really want to be at but that pain is always diminished somewhat if you’ve got another gig to go too, especially when they are this good! I’m Being Good, if I haven’t told you already, are in my humble opinion the best band in our town. Their sound is somewhere between the rich majestic soundscapes of Mogwai and the pop sensibilities and general awkwardness of Pavement. Why this band has never made it bigger than the Cowley after releasing some of the best albums by any British band in the last twenty years I have no idea. For proof of just how good they are get along to this show!

SEA BASTARD Prince Albert, February 6th, £4

RAE MORRIS The Marlborough Theatre, February 12th, £7-£8

It’s a busy month for our friends at Tatty Seaside Town as they bring us Sea Bastard, a doom band hailing from our fair town who in their eighteen month existence have caused some waves in the local scene. Formed from the ashes of Jovian and Funeral Hag their sound is someway between the two combining the lethargic nature of one and the pounding groove of the other. This is probably their biggest local show yet so get along and support them.

Rae Morris has announced she plans to release a new single in March, but first she’s off on a UK headline tour which calls in at The Marlborough Theatre on Tues 12 Feb. Newly signed to Atlantic Records, the Blackpudlian singer has been tipped for some major success this year, thanks to her knack for writing a cute tune or two, her unfeasibly large voice and an eagerly anticipated debut album shaping up nicely for an autumn release.

LEE “SCRATCH” PERRY

ROBIN GUTHRIE TRIO & MARK GARDENER Sticky Mike’s, February 20th, £12.50

MIKE WATT & IL SOGNO DE MARINAIO Prince Albert, February 25th, £7.50 adv

This magical show sees Robin Guthrie of the mightily great and influential Cocteau Twins perform with his new trio the set of instrumentals he has been busily crafting away on since 2011. If we counter into this equation that Mark Gardener, erstwhile lead singer and guitar slinger for semi-legendary indie scenesters Ride, will also be performing and it sure sets your correspondent looking into the heart of the sun. If, as promised, the two then come together to play a few tunes will leave many people busy guessing as to what songs they will perform and simply agog at what results. This is sure to be a memorable show for any of us who can remember that hallowed period of late 80s/early 90s experimentation within indie circles, something that is much needed right now!!

A complete legend who has played with some of the most important bands of all time. Mike Watt has been making music since 1979 when he came roaring out of San Pedro, California with the legendarily short-lived Minutemen. They bought to the punk scene an intellect and experimentation that was greatly needed at the time and Mike has continued that evolution with his later bands. The last time he was seen on this side of the pond was with Iggy and his Stooges continuing his life as a working musician but since the death of Ron Asheton, the lead Stooge and former guitar wielder, he has clearly found the need to put together a new band which should be interesting. As I haven’t actually heard any material yet I can’t say what to listen out for but I bet it is going to be a great rock’n’roll show from a bone-fide legend.

LEE ‘SCRATCH’ PERRY Concorde 2, February 13th, £20

We are indeed lucky that I seem to end up writing about Dr Lee at least two or three times a year as he yet again returns to our town for a show. This should be another great show from a legendary figure of Caribbean music scene. If you need to know more then well quite frankly you need to pay more attention as he’s been doing this kind of space-age dub symphonies for so long now he even makes me feel young!

And as always we have a show at the very start of next month that should tantalise our readers with – THE MAGIC BAND, aka Captain Beefheart’s old backing band, will be playing the Concorde 2 on March 1st and they will be amazing, I can guarantee that much!!

joy formidable There’s something raw and animalistic about the sound of a good rock trio. There’s a unique level of energy you simply don’t encounter in larger band setups. But you could easily put ten more musicians into The Joy Formidable’s line-up and it’s unlikely that they’d sound any bigger or fierier. Now, with a national tour about to get underway and a new album, Wolf’s Law (a titular nod to a theory that bone strengthens in response to unusual stresses), the Welsh power-trio are illustrating the natural evolution of their ferocious, swelling guitar-pop. “We wrote a lot of it on the road. I think I’d be worried if, over the course of 12 months, we didn’t evolve - either live, or in our song-writing,” Ritzy Bryan, the band’s singer and guitarist recalls. There’s a noticeable escalation in the band’s ambitions across the album’s 11 tracks, both in their song-writing and production. Wolf’s Law is like a huge rush of escaping energy, packed full of lavish, but ruthlessly efficient songs, bound tightly together with hooks the size of Snowdon. “We had a great collaboration with Andy Wallace (over 80 million albums have his name on their sleeve-notes.), but it’s just down to doing a lot in the last year, so that’s bound to have an effect on the producers you become and the songwriters you turn into.” Bryan, together with bassist Rhydian Dafydd and drummer Matt Thomas, have created an album that’s filled to the brim with string arrangements, dazzling song dynamic methodologies and the desire to thrill and entertain. Granted, it’s not a perfect album, but it is an immensely enjoyable and intelligent one. Anyone who went to university during the Nineties will recognise the distorted heady rush that symbolised indie acts back then, particularly those in the 4AD stable. But the band insist their influences are more classical than these epochal shoegazing bands. “I grew up listening to a lot of Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen and Motown. I’m drawn to people that have this individual voice, they have meaning and something to say.“ It’s an ethic like this that’s seen the band become one of the best live acts around, not content to merely repeat their songs but building upon them. “The live show has to find its own life. We finish a record, then there’s an exciting period of deconstructing and reconstructing each track. I hate going to see bands that literally just play a replica of their album. Their fearsome live reputation was the key to landing a support slot on Muse’s autumn UK tour last year. Whilst they aren’t simply the next corpulent stadium rock act to demand our attention, the scale and ambition the band project has

made them very attractive to an American audience. There’s been some minor US chart success, a recent appearance on the Jimmy Kimmel show and inclusion on the Breaking Dawn – Part 1 soundtrack. But Ms Bryan is not finding herself over-awed by this raise in their stateside profile: “It’s a great place to tour. It’s so huge that by the time you’ve lapped it once, you’re ready to lap it back the other way again. “We’re so lucky to have a fanbase that’s loyal and invested. For me that is the type of fan I always hoped I’d collect. In that sense I don’t think there’s any differentiation in the States or the UK, they’re all coming from that same place.” They might not be in an obvious hurry to score chart success, but they have worked together to craft a sound with

BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 9 ]

potentially enormous appeal. With any luck this is the beginnings of a new all-conquering Arena-Gaze® scene. We certainly need a few exciting effervescent guitar bands to liven it all up a bit. But is it worth being a rockstar these days? “There’s nothing not to enjoy. You wake up in a different place every day. We’re a solid unit, we all like to have a good time, and artistically we challenge each other as well, that keeps you alive.” Ironically the band is all but oblivious to the momentum they are gathering. Sure, they’re playing bigger venues and they’ll be getting more prestigious slots at this summer’s festivals, but Bryan claims they exist in a bubble: “It’s the music that drives everything for us. We don’t analyse too

much what other people are saying. We’ve always felt we want to lead the way… we don’t want to just follow. “If you’re always concerned about the industry’s opinion, then you can lose your way. I couldn’t think of anything worse than getting up onstage and going through the motions, or pretending because it’s expected of you.” The Joy Formidable’s new album Wolf’s Law is out right now. The band will rock Concorde 2 on Mon 4 Mar. www.thejoyformidable.com By Stuart Rolt

club kovak featuring Acclaimed record producer youth

Über-cool, synthesizerheavy, pop/rock outfit Kovak are bringing back their hugely popular eponymous club night, after a break of nearly two years, on Sat 2nd Mar. Kovak at The Blind Tiger Club, will feature both live music and DJ performances, plus the long-awaited return of Kovak, arguably Brighton’s best electronic band. Only the second ever unsigned act to be play-listed on Radio 2, with last summer’s debut single Killer Boot, Kovak are on mission to fill the electronic-pop gap with their fun-filled infectious tunes. To further add to the delights on offer, acclaimed record producer Youth, whose list of exemplary production credits include the likes of Dido, Paul McCartney, U2, The Verve, Crowded House and The Orb, will hitting the decks. Originally finding fame as the bassist for Killing Joke in 1979, nowadays Youth is known for his work as a producer and re-mixer for some of rock and pop’s biggest names, producing The Verve’s classic Urban Hymns and albums for The

Orb, Erasure, The Futureheads and James. He has also remixed for artists such as Blue Pearl, The Cult and The Sugarcubes. Currently he’s enjoying a renaissance with Killing Joke, having re-joined the band in 2008. As if the appearance from a Dance-Rock legend wasn’t already electrifying, Kovak will be debuting some of the new material from their eagerly anticipated new album, Modern Lovers, which is currently getting some major support from Radio 2 and the music press. Club Kovak has been running over six years in various Brighton venues and has had the likes of The Go! Team and The Orb’s Alex Paterson wowing their crowds. Kovak lead singer Annelies Van de Velde says: “We’re really very excited to have such a big name headline this Club Kovak night. We’ve gradually watched the night grow and it’s lovely to choose such an intimate and bohemian venue this time round.” Saturday 2nd March Blind Tiger

VALENTINES... By Matt Russell The world is a terribly cynical place. People are negative about almost everything nowadays. We have such swift access to so much information it makes it incredibly tough not to be brow beaten by the realities of the modern age. Being jaded isn’t just an easier mindset to have, it may also have an element of misguided coolness to it. To be enthused about something gives the impression that you care. To care gives the impression that you have, at the very least, made some kind of an effort. And the problem with that is, as we all know, coolness should be effortless. It’s cool to not give a damn. Right? Consequently, when asked to contribute something about Valentines Day I thought, Fantastic!! Simple. I’ll just completely slate it. I could easily start by trashing its sentiment- a day so sugarcoated and fake, if it were a food, it would make diabetes cry. Next, I’d probably lump it in with Mothers and Fathers Day as another ludicrously exploitative card flogging occasion. Lastly, I would pillory it for its stranglehold on television, film and advertising- knowing at some point I will undoubtedly turn on the box and be face to face with Hugh Grant. Again Problem is. I can’t. I actually quite like Valentines Day. Yes of course, it’s bank-breakingly destructive for the loved up, heart-breakingly depressing for the loved down and for the newly coupled, a complex quandary of how hard does one try? Too little effort, and risk giving the impression you are a thoughtless cheapskate. Too intense, and you’ll most likely find your date, - after sweetly requesting a romantic photo togetherquietly sneaking off to the WC to compare your face to the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted list. Nevertheless, pushing all the faux proclivities and easily mocked commerciality aside, it is based on fundamentally nice foundations; buying smile-inducing presents for someone you like, having a lovely meal, getting a little tipsy and unapologetically ignoring everybody else for an entire evening!! If anything, it should definitely be done more often. And what, lovebirds, could be a funnier, more romance infused way to get closer than… arrgghh I can’t do it… I can’t… oh God… I just vomited. And that’s as close to saccharine as I get. Now I’m off to kick a load of bunny rabbits.

We knew we were in for a fractious time when we interviewed Pam Ann, but even our wildest dreams couldn’t expect the somewhat meagre detail of her answers. But we get it… life as a globe-trotting superstar can’t be easy. Especially when stupid journalists keep asking you the same old questions, passengers always ignore your safety demonstrations and you live in constant fear the Captain has just shoved this month’s paycheque up his nose. Plus it can’t be pleasant spending most of your time on the opposite side of the planet from your fresh knickers supply, We will always love you Pam, no matter what, or how little, you say to us, such is our level of devotion. So we have to say thank you to Pam, for introducing a brief fleeting moment of delicious glamour into our otherwise grey and dull lives. What drew you to working as a flight attendant? What might you be doing instead? Growing up in Australia I used to watch the planes touching down and taking off and think to myself where the fuck are they going I want to get the fuck out of here to. If I wasn’t an air hostess I would be an escort. Is there a secret code in the different shades of orange that cabin crew come in? One word ‘Cheap’ What’s the most exotic place you’ve been to? Punta Del Este in Uruguay Are you good in an emergency? No I panic Have you met anyone famous whilst working? Of course many stars fly Pam Ann Airlines Cher, Elton John, Lady Ga Ga, Madonna, 50 Cent just to name a few Your uniform seems to fit you better than most cabin flight attendants, is it specially made? I have it made for me that’s the luxury of owning your own airline.

What goes on in the galley when that flimsy curtain is gets drawn? Bitching about passengers and reading OK Magazine Any good tips to get the best service out of cabin crew? Don’t ask for anything wait to be served Is it a hassle to be a celebrity and fly commercial? It’s never a hassle as the crew take extra special care of you Is modern air travel still glamorous and fun, or has it become a pain? For some airlines like Ryan Air I can’t imagine that being fun – where’s the Al qaeda when you need them.

Now, we’re ever keen to give you the maximum content possible. Whilst blank space might enthral and captivate the readers of certain tabloid newspapers, it’s pretty useless to our average audience, so here are some interesting air travel related facts to amaze and delight you. The captain and the first officer always eat different meals during a flight, just in case one of them gets sick from food poisoning. Also, contrary to popular belief, cabin crew do not have to subsist on the flight crew’s left-overs. That honour is reserved for the Purser only. In what can only be seen as a sensible solution, airlines, most notably United Airlines and Southwest are now charging extra for obese customers. Oversized people now need to purchase two seats for one person. This is only fair, now noone has to suffer the indignity of having to pay dearly for a slight excess luggage infraction, when someone of almost twice their BMI can jump on the plane with impunity. Whilst a few people do genuinely have gland problems, far more of us have a tax-free booze problem. Ever wondered why the lights are turned out on take-off and landing? It’s so your eyes adjust to lower levels of light. In the unlikely event of an accident you’ll be able to see better and therefore able to get to the doors (and out) more quickly and safely. Also the cabin crew like it, as they can raid the drink trollies under the cover of darkness.

comedy highlights By Stuart Rolt

Angela Barnes: Rabbit In The Headlights Upstairs At Three and Ten, Fri 22nd February

Naz Osmanoglu: Ottoman Without An Empire Upstairs At Three and Ten, Wed 20th February

The joyfully acidic Angela Barnes, winner of the BBC New Comedian Awards 2011, presents us with the very best in emergent comedy talent. Deadpan, but somehow effortlessly charming, her sardonic, sometime almost reluctant, style belies that she is a very clever performer, with some hilarious insights on the lot of a 30-something woman. Upstairs At Three and Ten is a, sometimes overlooked, gem of a venue, perfectly lending itself stand-ip nights like these. You won’t get a better return for a paltry six quid.

With an appearance like a post-clubbing random house-guest, and a demeanour to match, Naz Osmanoglu is starting to get the plaudits he deserves. One third of WitTank , he’s been With appeared on Russell Howard’s Good News and is a regular feature on BBC3’s Live at The Electric, now he’s performing in his solo sweat-fuelled, energy-packed show. He claims he’s 19th in line to the Ottoman throne, a Turkish Empire form five centuries ago. Is there a lot of sterility in his family tree?

Lee Hurst (pictured) The Old Market, Sat 23rd Feb

Robbert Newman’s New Theory of Evolution: Work in Progress - Komedia, Sun 24th Feb

Lee Hurst ponders the inequalities and paradoxes of the modern world on this, his latest stand-up comedy tour. Acid Rain, Global Warming, Bird Flu and Mad Cow Disease are all placed under scrutiny as “The bald one from BBC TV’s They Think Its All Over” takes us through the ‘disasters’ that failed to destroy us, as well as the dangers facing us from everyday life. Will you stay indoors… hoarding cans of beans, clutching a Ray Mears book or will you go out and laugh in the face of doom?!

Comedian, activist, writer and all-round ‘bloody good bloke’ Rob Newman tries out new material in advance of a major UK tour. After shooting to fame on BBC’s The Mary Whitehouse Experience, Mr Newman was part of the first comedy act to perform at Wembley Arena. Unapologetic, introspective and thoroughly brilliant, he’s a firm believer that comedy can aspire to be more than a mere contrivance to amuse. You might not walk away having heard any mother-in-law jokes, but you’ll certainly walk away a richer human being.

BRIGHTON SCIENCE FESTIVAL Brighton Science Festival makes a welcome return this month, bringing with it an eclectic and extensive range of technology-themed events to our city.

the multitude of sex myths pervading modern society, establishing the connections between the things we believe and the people who want us to believe them.

After searching for the most extraordinary and inspiring science communicators in Britain, the festival’s organisers have worked tirelessly to create an event that’ll fire up imaginations and enable participants to engage with science on a number of levels.

Comedian Robin Ince returns, with a preview of his new show, The Importance of Being Interested, and a special edition of Robin Ince’s Book Club, where he’ll be looking at the strangest passages of erotica from numerous books rescued from skips and charity shops.

Now in its eighth year, the festival’s timetable sees the return of some old favourites and some esoteric, but compelling brand new inclusions. Parents will be pleased to find there are ample opportunities to keep the younger of the city’s scientific minds active over half term. The festival is offering two funpacked activity days, where kids and parents alike can view science from a different angle.

The Duke’s At Komedia is also getting into the mood, with special screenings of the vastly underrated Gattica with its bleak and possibly inevitable vision of the future, Werner Herzog’s incredible Cave of Forgotten Dreams and The Lovers’ Guide (in glorious tumescent 3D for your viewing pleasure.)

Bright Sparks, is a day of hands-on experimentation for parents and kids alike, and Play With Your Food where cookery meets chemistry, two disciplines that are closer linked than you’d think. On a distinctly more adult level, Brooke Magnanti, the woman behind Secret Diary of a Call Girl, will examine

So, if your interest lies with Philosophy In Pubs, learning how to contain and control a zombie epidemic, mastering the indispensible art of soldering, unravelling the story of DNA, constructing your own MP3 player from scratch or simply filling up with the spirit of discovery, then there’s something here for you! www.BrightonScience.com

THEATRE GUIDE I love snow. Trudging through it does wonders for the muscletone of my lower body, but there’s been precious little to exercise my mind recently. So thank heavens Feb’s here with a vast array of theatrical brain workouts. The Beast takes over the Dome’s Studio Theatre on Fri 15 Feb. Brought to life by Stuart Bowden, this is the playful tale of a lonely, isolated and hopeful creature who lives on the outskirts of town. His tale will touch your heart and then tickle it (in a nonlife-threatening way). Hitting the Dome’s Studio Theatre on Fri 15 Feb is Lovesong. A man living in the fast-lane realises there’s something missing. Performed by soul legend Omar and featuring his own music and lyrics, this is a study of a reckless individual forced to reflect on the shortfalls of his lifestyle. Experimenting with a tiny camera and big screen, Simon Munnery is Fylm-Makker. Presenting a beautiful mix of visual sketches, handcrafted animation, music and stand-up, all created and performed live on screen, Mr Munnery is gathering plaudits in the media right now, so see what all the fuss is about down at The Old Market on Wed 20 Feb. In a reimagining of the classic (and incredibly influential) Goethe tale, Doctor Faustus sees an obsessed man strike a deal with the devil. The Faustian legend crawls from the page into vivid life at The Nightingale on Weds 13 – Sat 16 Feb. Explore the Pavilion complex with Hidden Places, Familiar Faces, on Sat 16 Feb. This tour takes you round The Royal Pavilion,

neon HAIR BOUTIQUE Neon Hair Boutique, nestled in the Clifton Conservation area of Seven dials and a stone’s throw away from the city centre, is a very contemporary and stylish hair salon. Alex Graham, who opened the salon in early 2012, has seen popularity rise amongst the young and fashionable with a modern approach to hair styling. With a vast knowledge and range of highlighting, colouring and cuts, the team are always on hand to create that new look or style. The interior is like a trendy living room, boasting an array of hand drawn, pop-art style, graffiti art and vibrant hangings, with a smart wooden floor and bright surroundings. It certainly impressed me and after meeting the team I decided to get my hair cut! The service was very professional whilst making me feel at home and well looked after. There are many hair dressers in Brighton but this one certainly makes you want to come back. Being not too far from Western Road, the Waitrose area and Seven Dials, it’s easily accessible without the town centre mayhem. So, whether you are shopping or sunning yourself on the beach, ‘let your hair down’, ‘be a cut above the rest’ and... whatever other puns I can throw in here, and visit Neon Hair Boutique for a consultation and make easy that modern style. Visit the website for a list of prices and offers. www.neonhairboutique.com

nice spot bar Nice Spot Bar sounds like a nice spot to have an evening drink, so when we got invited down by owner Dan Springford to try some Cuban enthused cocktails, we jumped at the chance. We arrived to a stylish, intimate and cosy, Cuban inspired bar, with low orange and red lighting, black leather seating, cactus plants and carefully selected hangings which fashioned a warm and relaxed environment. You can find Nice Spot bar situated along Church Road underneath Ganges Restaurant. “Located under a restaurant has its benefits” Dan explains. “We have a bar menu with a selection of amazing Indian food you can order at the bar, cheaper than the restaurant prices too, but with the same quality and portions. You can even use the restaurant menu to order something from that if you wish”. We settled in and the ever so friendly Dan and his staff got quickly into showing us the range of drinks on offer and suggested their signature cocktail The Mojito or the Mojito with a slight twist; less sugar and orange instead of lime. Next we tried the Rum Punch (£4.50), a smooth and fruity cocktail that was very pleasant to drink. After this came a Pina Colada (£4.50), followed shortly by a Daiquiri (£4.50). As you can guess these are all Cuban inspired cocktails, but if cocktails aren’t to your taste a number of premium beers and Ciders are on offer, including a selection of wine (£4.00 House). Premium lagers are at a modest £3.00,

and the general consensus is to keep prices within reason, which is good in these hard strapped times. More booze for the cause... The bar suddenly started to fill, Dan and his staff were quick to greet everyone that walked in the door, professionally serving up drinks and cocktails left, right and centre. Then I noticed someone had ordered the Zombie? Intrigued, I asked what the ingredients in a Zombie are. “This is one of our more expensive, premium cocktails” Dan explained. “It contains a selection of different Rum and fruit juices; Bacardi, light rum, dark rum, golden rum and a load of different fruit juices to be precise”. Drinking one of these will definitely make you a zombie! The great thing about this place is it’s not trying to be a fancy cocktail bar or a poncy wine bar, as Dan explains “It’s a bit of everything, we have our signature range of cocktails that I’ve mastered along with a range of Beers, Ciders and Wine’s, but if you request a cocktail that’s not on the menu, I’m more than happy to make it. I even leave a booklet of the 100 best cocktails beside the bar for people to look at and get inspiration. We’ve even made some up at customer’s request.” Nice Spot Bar is the perfect place for a pre club drink or nibble, or, as we did, stay the evening and get immersed in the chilled party atmosphere and have a little boogie on the dance floor. I have recommended the place to most friends and anyone living in that area, with all having a pleasant and joyful, if not a little more inebriated, experience.

FREESTYLERS H BAR - 23rd february

OK. We do go on about the H-Bar a lot, but in our defence their club-nights keep getting better and better. This time it’s the appearance of Freestylers AND Ed Solo down there on Sat 23 Feb, that’s getting us damp. Drumstep superstars Freestylers epoch-spanning, genre-jumping, party-starting style has taken them round the world, wowing and thrilling some of the biggest clubs and festivals in existence. Since their seminal debut album, 1998’s We Rock Hard, they’ve produced some of the most influential records on the Breaks scene and collaborated with, or remixed, just about every other Bass Music act in the country, including Brighton’s own MC Darisson and Krafty Kuts. Arguably best known for their singles Push Up, an infectious homage to 80’s Electro-Pop, or the Spandau Ballet raiding (and eternally remixed) In Love With You, the band haven’t released an album since 2007’s seminal DJ mix A Different Story Vol. 1. Instead they’ve been steadily gigging and dropping a few exceptional singles to keep public interest ticking over. But there’s rumours something big is on the horizon.

Brighton resident Ed Solo is another core component of the Breaks/ Drum ‘n’ Bass scene. Whether it’s shaking them bootys on Deekline’s Hotcakes label, or wowing the Dubstep kids with his anthemic Age Of Dub single, his eclectic and imaginative output has ensured that his records find their way into the selections of every break-beat tinged DJ on the planet. As a DJ he’s a fierce proposal, effortlessly dropping Breaks, Dubstep, Glitch Hop and Bass into his sets, but always making sure the room is jumping. Somehow he also finds time (with JFB and Beardyman) to bring us BattleJam, regular evenings of beatboxing, sampling, looping, video scratching and crazy crowd interaction. All this bowel-loosening bass-delightfulness is all being brought to you by Codesouth, the people who coaxed Fatboy Slim down there last year, so expect it to be huge. We’ve really no idea how H-Bar manage to attract so many exciting artists, but we have got strong suspicions witchcraft is involved, so resistance is futile. See you by the bassbin!

FILM A SPACE FOR SOUND AND VISION By Wayne Imms

For seven years now, I’ve been running a rather unique Brighton-based event named The Space. It started out as a networking event for those, such as me, who wanted to find new contacts and collaborations relating to the media and the creative industries. From the beginning; the first was in May 2006, we’ve had had an impressive line-up of two guest interviewees at each event. There’ve been well over a hundred guests, usually highly accomplished and often high profile figures from various areas of the creative industries. Nowadays, most are from the film world. I’m particularly looking forward to this month’s Space event, which takes place on February 12th at The Basement. The guests are people who’ve worked on many productions that I’ve very much admired for a long time, especially the Star Wars films and classic music videos, Robert Watts and Steve Barron. Watts played a key role within the production of the original Star Wars trilogy, closely working with George Lucas on the epic space fantasy. The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi; the latter was released thirty years ago this year. As the films’ co-producer, he helped Lucas to realise his groundbreaking vision. Watts also produced Raiders of the Lost Ark and the following two Indiana Jones adventures. Barron made some groundbreaking videos for some of the world’s biggest recording artists, from Michael Jackson to Madonna. I’ve always loved Star Wars. I vaguely remember seeing it for the first time at a Maidstone cinema with my dad. It blew me away and I remained a fan ever since. Of course, it was a spectacular adventure of good versus evil with great heroes and villains, of all shapes and sizes. Over the years, including through the Space events, I’ve been privileged to meet some of the people behind the original films, as well as some who worked on the prequels. These include production designer Norman Reynolds,

costume designer John Mollo, producer Gary Kurtz and even trumpeter Max Murphy, who can be heard playing on the original Star Wars theme. Robert Watts first appeared at The Space’s Raiders of the Lost Ark thirtieth anniversary event in 2011; he appeared to be lovely chap with some interesting anecdotes about making the film. I very much look forward to seeing him again. As well as the Star Wars and Indiana Jones films, he worked on Who Framed Roger Rabbit as a producer and 2001: A Space Odyssey as production manager. I’ve always been a fan of the music video. Clearly, it’s a medium which fuses together the two most popular art forms, music and film. It was probably the early 1980s when the medium really grabbed me, partly through some of the decade’s soul and pop music. I was a fan of Michael Jackson’s music – and his videos, especially for the Thriller single, which was really a short film, an amazing one at that. The first video for a single from the Thriller album was Billie Jean, which still looks really good. Its direc-

tor, Steve Barron, will be a guest at The Space’s February event. Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting the directors of the Thriller and Beat It videos; John Landis and Bob Giraldi, respectively. I look forward to meeting Barron this month. He was also responsible for some of the 1980s’ most groundbreaking and memorable videos, such as Dire Straits’ Money for Nothing, a-ha’s Take on Me and the Human League’s Don’t You Want Me. Barron also made videos for artists such as Madonna, The Jam, Toto (remember Africa?) and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark’s classic Joan of Arc (Maid of Orleans). He was also responsible for the films Electric Dreams and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Of course, for me, it’s very much his music video work which really interests me. I’m sure that Steve Barron’s interview at The Space will hear him giving us some fascinating and maybe revealing tales of working with some of music’s biggest stars, as well as insights into how he made some great videos. So, for me personally, this month’s line-up at the regular event is a

great one that I really am very much looking forward to. The Space event will be held at The Basement on Tuesday 12th February from 7pm. It’s sponsored by Brighton Film School. www.thespace.uk.com

he charity a band of brothers was established by men who work hard and tirelessly to introduce positive social change through personal development and community building.

We are local and committed to working with young men, introducing them to rites of passage and offering on-going mentoring and support as positive male role models. This is transformational work. We are passionate about its potential for a society where the traditional male role model is so often missing from the lives of individuals. Part of the process for the young men we support is a long weekend away in nature called ‘The Quest’, where they experience a very powerful and profound rites of passage programme. These weekends change people’s lives! As we are almost entirely self-funded, we are restricted in how many of these weekends we can do a year. At the moment, abandofbrothers’ men give up their family and work time, and there is then the cost of food, infrastructure and the hire of a suitably wooded site with the appropriate facilities. If we had our own site, we would be able to run more weekends and other programmes and we would also be able to help a lot more families and communities, as well as educating our future: the young men of tomorrow. We need to raise approximately £500,000 to realise this worthwhile dream.

the dirt with Mark ede So HMV goes down. Out of the flames a Phoenix will rise? Time will tell. Many high profile commentators are predicting the end of the album, Martin Elbourne, of Glastonbury and Great Escape fame, goes as far as to say ‘Any artist who relies on sales in Europe preparing to record 70 minute CDs is a moron now. Those days are gone...big time’. Which, if he’s right, means quite a lot of people I know are morons. At a more parochial level I asked a couple of local music business gurus for their thoughts. Reverb Director/Meadowlands booker and music editor Jeff Hemmings offers ‘according to the latest figures nearly 70m CD albums were sold last year compared with the 30m downloaded in the UK. But nearly two out of every three were bought online or in supermarkets rather than from traditional music retailers on the high street. I’m also wondering how many other CDs are bought at gigs or via bands websites etc that wouldn’t make it into any official calculation. I’d say talk of the death of the CD (and, as always, vinyl) was premature... physical product is still a valuable commodity... sure, they’ll continue to slowly decline, but global populations keep rising, and new, surprising trends keep emerging...’. . Managers need many skills dependent on specifics’. Myself, I think that whilst change is inevitable, whatever the future holds, things are never quite as black and white as sometimes predicted. Away from the monolithic ivory towers of the old music establishment, I think one value of operating at the grass roots level which, let’s face it, is where most people operate, is in the fact that it allows for flexibility and the ability to be light on ones feet. Income streams are a challenge but can still be dug out, for those hard

working and talented enough to work them. For most, it’s a case of get it where you can. Music sales, in all formats, from all outlets - e.g. gigs, downloads, websites, wherever - can still add up to something. Moreover, diversifying, imaginatively and appropriately, into merchandising and live performance can help create career sustaining revenues, not least in ‘niche’ markets, which still retain some element of supportive infrastructure. I do feel for acts trying to push forward in the highly competitive world of ‘indie’ acts and, even worse, those trying to compete in the ‘mainstream’, characterised by acts hoping to feature on Radio 1 and Radio 2 and the charts. Generally this does involve competing with acts who still have huge label and/or management funded investment, and how a local band can hope to get a foothold in that particular door without similar marketing and promotional resources. Constant gigging and touring - particularly branching out beyond ones local area - can be both expensive and, if ones not careful, soul destroying. Have you heard the one about the local musician who won the lottery? When asked about what he intended to do with proceeds, the reply was ‘I intend to keep gigging till the money runs out’. Final word from Jeff Hemmings ‘The future? God Knows! But all I know is people will always love music!’. www.bigiam.co.uk Artist Management: JO HARMAN www.joharman.com @markede1
