Editor’s Letter... As we’re obviously ones to conform with both tradition and popular convention, we shall refer to this next 12 months as ‘2022’. But we’re not going to make any predictions regarding what might come.

If the last 20 months have demonstrated anything, life is unpredictable and inconvenient. Often tedious and occasionally brutal, last year gave us all a glimpse of what it must be like to live in an old people’s home. Friends and relatives visited infrequently, hours were wasted staring at the television and any, even perfunctory, efforts on our appearance went straight out of the (slightly ajar) window. At some points, it would have brought little surprise if the planet Earth suddenly burst into flames and plunged, screaming, into the white heat of the Sun. Perhaps that might have been a pleasant distraction from the endless slackjawed scrolling through iPlayer.

Some easy vegan recipes to kickstart your 2022

Normally, we’d be full of ambition at this time of year, powered up by resolutions, good intent and renewed energy. But after any number of cancellations and disappointments, my only objective is to spend the inevitable Lockdown #20 exploring my platonic and entirely unrequited love for Countdown’s Susie Dent. “Dowfart,” she’ll soon whisper authoritatively, as I slovenly sit in my tracksuit bottoms, ladling yet another lukewarm Pot Noodle inside myself. “It’s a Scots word meaning feeble, idle and entirely ineffectual.” Obviously, I’m joking. You’ve probably guessed I’m more of a Dickinson’s Real Deal aficionado, but the point stands. Setting resolutions, with the hope of finding some transformative revelation is perhaps currently beyond my grasp right now.

Although, like many people, I’ve massively improved during lockdown. I’ve developed superhuman powers of patience, started genuinely appreciating the small wonders in life, learned that it’s not the end of the world if others don’t share your values and seen that some things are better if everyone works together. So perhaps there isn’t much scope for further personal improvement. One step at a time… Anyway, giving up bad habits is rubbish. Nobody likes a quitter. And yes. I am available for life-coaching sessions.

MAJOR NEW WORKS ANNOUNCED FOR BRIGHTON FESTIVAL 2022 England’s biggest annual multiarts festival returns in May and they have released early details of a bold new dance work from the boundarybreaking Hofesh Shechter Company, and innovative theatre by criticallyacclaimed Wise Children. Created by the internationally celebrated choreographer Hofesh Shechter OBE, Double Murder will be a thrilling performance of two distinctly contrasting pieces for our times. With a sarcastic nod to our ever-growing indifference to violence, the first piece, Clowns unleashes a whirlwind of anarchy, asking how far we are willing to go in the name of entertainment. In contrast, The Fix offers a human, raw and compassionate moment where violence, tenderness and hope are laid bare through an achingly beautiful cinematic lens, accompanied by the epic sounds of a Shechtercomposed score. “I am very excited to bring Double Murder to Brighton Festival’s opening weekend,” said Hofesh Shechter – a previous Brighton Festival guest director and Brighton Dome resident artist. “It’s been two years in waiting and coming back to Brighton Dome Concert Hall is a special moment for us all. We live in a very different time now, yet those first sparks generated within the creation studio in 2019, the sense that hope was our most valuable currency, has never left us.” Emily Brontë’s epic love story Wuthering Heights has been adapted and directed

for the stage by Wise Children’s Artistic Director Emma Rice. This powerful and unique theatrical experience features actor and performance artist Lucy McCormick as the iconic Cathy, with Ash Hunter as Heathcliff, leading an ensemble cast of performers and musicians in this intoxicating revenge tragedy retold for our time. “The Yorkshire Moors are about to meet the salty sea air of Brighton,” says Rice. “We can’t wait to bring this elemental and thrilling show to one of our favourite audiences - and to be part of the wonderful Festival is the cherry on top. Spring by the sea? What could be better.” Andrew Comben, Brighton Festival Chief Executive says he’s thrilled to have two of the UK’s most exciting artistic companies bringing performances to Brighton Festival. “We know audiences are going to love seeing Hofesh Shechter back in Brighton, following the cancellation of their appearance in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, we can’t wait to see them here again. MARK STEEL GOES FRENCH Brighton Komedia on Sun 23 Jan. London’s The Museum Of Comedy on Fri 28 Jan. Rarely a comedian to follow the norm, Mark Steel is bringing his new show to Brighton’s Komedia and London’s Museum Of Comedy this month. Performed entirely in French. The inspiration comes entirely from visiting dozens of towns during the last ten years, for his Radio 4 programme Mark Steel’s in Town. He says doing shows about the crazy ways of Orkney or Basingstoke, in front of people who live there, is almost like performing in another language. The people in those places are always funny, always heartening. So, the next stage is to present a work where the words are also different to the ones he’s familiar with. So, for Mark Steel En Ville, he’ll talk about France and the French, and Britain and the British. Because they’re funny. He’s also developed a whole new way of yelling, which is a wonderful incentive. If people laugh, this will complete the next stage of his plan to dominate the world. The show will also feature the utterly brilliant and very Parisian, multi award-winning Celya AB. Just to complete the Gallic theme. It comes fresh after the release of Steel’s Who Do I Think I Am? audiobook last month on Audible. A hilarious and heart-breaking exploration of his own adoption, it uncovers a strange story which transported him across social and cultural divides. LLOYD CORPORATION COME TO BRIGHTON CCA Fri 28 Jan – Sat 2 April A collaborative project between artists Ali Eisa and Sebastian Lloyd Rees, Lloyd Corporation bring a major new work to Brighton CCA this month. Titled Today’s gift is tomorrow’s commodity. Yesterday’s commodity is tomorrow’s found art object. Today’s art object is tomorrow’s junk. And yesterday’s junk is tomorrow’s heirloom, the exhibition reflects on how choices made as individuals affect us as a collective. It follows a year of supported research with Brighton CCA for the artists. The commission triggers important discussions about the implications of global trade practices at both a macro and micro level. Accompanying the free exhibition will be a series of talks, screenings and live events hosted in person and online including interviews with the artists and a newly commissioned essay available along with the artists’ research archive in the Studio Dialogues section of the Brighton CCA website. Lloyd Corporation have shown across the globe, with a practice which utilises sculpture, installation, performance and text, often taking inspiration from informal and local economies. Processes typically involve close dialogue, sitespecific research and collection of material culture from which their work takes shape. They attempt to render complex, critical, yet often abstract, socio-economic issues – including globalisation, consumerism and urban development - as visible, sensorial and connected to people’s everyday lives. www.brightoncca.art

KOMEDIA SHAKES UP WEEKEND COMEDY EVERY FRI AND SAT, FROM FRI 21 JAN Brighton’s Komedia has teamed up with leading independent comedy promoters, Little Wander, to create a fresh take on their weekend stand-up comedy offering. The newly named ‘Komedia Comedy Club’ (previously ‘Krater Comedy Club’) will provide one of the best night’s out in Brighton, whilst showcasing a diverse line-up of headline comics, bright new talent and hosting from seasoned MC’s. Little Wander is one of the industry’s leading comedy promoters, working with Josh Widdicombe, Ed Gamble, David O’Doherty, Josie Long, Bridget Christie, Nish Kumar and Tim Key. They also founded Machynlleth Comedy Festival and manage Last Laugh at Green Man Festival. “We’re absolutely thrilled to be working with Brighton Komedia on this new chapter for the venue,” said Henry Widdicombe from Little Wander. “We want to acknowledge the years of hard work that has made this venue amongst the very best in the UK, and we feel extremely privileged to have the opportunity to build on this work.” Line-ups confirmed so far include Kiri Pritchard-McLean, Richard and Greta (Shenoah Allen and Nina Conti), Phil Wang, Rosie Jones, Sara Barron, Jarred Christmas, Catherine Bohart, Jordan Brookes and Olga Koch. DAME VERA LYNN: AN EXTRAORDINARY LIFE Sat 8 Jan – Mon 18 April Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft A major new exhibition celebrating one of Britain’s most beloved performers is coming to Ditchling. Dame Vera Lynn: An Extraordinary Life will showcase over 100 never-before-seen objects from the private collection of the iconic ‘Forces Sweetheart’. Through its range of illuminating documents and incredible ephemera, the exhibition offers unparalleled insight into both the public and personal life of a singer, whose work was crucial in maintaining morale during the Second World War. The exhibition will also reveal 20 unseen artworks by Dame Vera, who was an enthusiastic painter for much of her life. These include portraiture and still-lifes painted at her London home, following the Second World War, and at Ditchling, where she owned a home from 1944. From top-secret instruction issued by King George VI for Dame Vera to perform HRH Princess Elizabeth’s 16th birthday, to photographs of the Lynn entertaining British troops in Egypt, and on to wonderful items from her wardrobe, this wonderful show chronicles the nine decades she spent in the public eye “I’m highly delighted that this exhibition is taking place,” said Dame Vera Lynn ‘s daughter, Virginia Lewis-Jones. “it’s right and proper that it should begin its life at Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft. Independent Venue Week also provides openings for those wanting an off-stage career in music to learn their craft in small wellestablished venues. Worthing-based promoter atom is participating with three nights of live music from nine of the UK’s most exciting new artists. The specially-curated events bring together pop, indie, punk, rock, singersongwriters, rap and hip hop at the town’s premier venue, The Factory Live.

Weds 2 Feb brings in The Clockworks. A favourite of Alan McGee, who discovered Oasis, Primal Scream and My Bloody Valentine, they’ve supported Kings Of Leon and sold out their first headline show in London, and are now tipped for a big leap forward. Support comes from the post-punk garage rock of Cheap Teeth and Shoreham’s hot new prospect, Niches.

Finn Foxell heads to the venue on Thurs 3 Feb. A unique force within the UK’s rap scene, this west London artist curates the rawest elements of rap, soul and rock to create smoky, electronic, hip-hop leaning atmospherics. Support comes from Kay Young, who was personally discovered by Jay Electronica, and then signed by Jay-Z to his Roc Nation label on the strength of her demos. Completing the line-up is Brighton-based singer-songwriter, Tiawa The final show on Fri 4 Feb welcomes Emily Burns, who is fresh from touring with Rag’N’Bone Man. Offering an honest, vivacious and switched-on pop sound, this brilliant artist has recently delivered a trio of captivating EPs. She’s joined by Tayo Sound - a Nigerian-Scottish busker who has enjoyed support from Radio 1 and over ten million streams for their debut EP. Opening the evening is Fari, a singersongwriter based in Worthing.

Over £40,000 has been raised by the public and local businesses for Justlife, a homelessness charity based in Brighton & Hove which supports people living in temporary accommodation. The week-long campaign, that saw all donations to Justlife’s work were doubled as part of The Big Give Christmas Challenge, involved events such as a raffle and quiz at One Church Brighton, a drawing sale by Chris Riddell, and a collection at ASDA Brighton Marina. Raffle prizes were kindly donated by a group of local businesses such as Boulder Brighton, Bird & Blend Tea, Kitgum Kitchen, Projects Club, Silly Moo Cider, Artroom Brighton, Hush Beats Disco, Proud Cabaret, Marie-Louise Tibbles Photography, Wakehurst Kew Gardens, and Lucy Browne. These included a climbing session for two, a Christmas tea hamper, dinner vouchers, a cider hamper, a children’s art course, a silent disco kit, and a photoshoot. “We’re so grateful to all the local businesses who supported our campaign,” said Simon Gale, CEO of Justlie. “Their support, and the support of donors, means that we can reach even more people living in temporary accommodation this winter, helping them access health care, housing and our befriending scheme. “Winter can be a particularly difficult time for people living in temporary accommodation but thanks to our supporters, we can continue to be there for the people who depend on us, and provide vital services to help them move away from homelessness for good. ” The political cartoonist and former UK Children’s Laureate, Chris Riddell, sold a selection of his original drawings online, raising over £3000 for Justlife’s campaign. The quiz was hosted by volunteer Debs Lennard from Brighton, who also helped organise and promote the raffle to support Justlife. All funds raised will help extend two of Justlife’s Brighton projects: Health Engagement, a project that helps homeless people with mental and physical health needs to engage with professional health services, and Social Connection, a befriending scheme where people affected by homelessness get matched with a befriender who they can do fun local activities with. “The Social Connection project has been lifechanging for me,” said Jude, a participant in Justlife’s befriending scheme. “The fact that my befriender is willing to take time out of her week every week to spend time with me just makes me feel worth something”.

STOMP By Stuart Rolt

The international appeal of STOMP is undeniable. They’ve taken their energetic fusion of rhythm, dance and comic theatre to audiences around the world, staging off-Broadway residencies at New York’s Orpheum Theatre, recording lavish HBO specials and performing at the London Olympics closing ceremony in 2012. Not too bad for a concept which grew out of an innovative piece of street theatre. And this success is mostly down to the company’s ability to transcend cultural divides, creating a universal ‘language’ through percussion. “Rhythm and humour have no barriers,” says STOMP co-founder Luke Cresswell. “We all connect to it, no matter where we live.” Mankind has always struck random things to produce sounds. This primal desire evolved into accompaniment for dancing and communication, creating a rhythmic lexicon which is understood across the world. “Whether we perform in Brazil or Japan, Russia or USA - the audiences all get it, they respond in very similar ways, wanting to connect, wanting to engage, it’s infectious.” The ability to perform the same show with no compromises in translation is some feat. Yet it’s one which breaks down barriers to entry by abandoning the more traditional percussion instruments for everyday objects. STOMP has always been about using what is around you, firing up imaginations and creating pictures with rhythm. And these pictures evolve as the performers swap between matchboxes, wooden poles, brooms or hubcaps. “Sometimes limiting your toolset does make you become more creative: a bit like making yourself use mime to tell a story, you are forced out of your comfort zone, you are compelled to be more creative.” Now audiences in Brighton & Hove are being given a rare opportunity to see, hear and feel this constantly inventive spectacle in intimate surroundings as STOMP bring a season of polyrhythmic energy to The Old Market. This series of shows and workshops, running on Weds 16 Feb- Sun 1 May 2022, forms part of the venue’s A Gig For A Gig project. This sees productions from established artists being used

to help finance shows from a range of upcoming creators. “It’s a great way for artists to give back, and better than just donating money,” says Cresswell. “This way they donate their performance, not only raising funds but also inspiring other artists.” Over the last decade, TOM has supported hundreds of emerging performers and staged thousands of shows, all thanks to the private funding of three of the city’s biggest stars. As an artist-led venue, TOM want to further develop this ethos of art supporting art. Conceived by TOM programmer Helen Jewell and Marketing Manager Mark Gordon, the scheme uses 100% of profits from participating shows to pay for future productions from promising local makers and musicians. It’s already seen performances from Norman Cook and Mark Thomas provide funding for innovative productions from exciting new talent.

This is an important space for artists in Brighton & Hove, and the ambition continues to encourage new works from artists from all backgrounds. “The hope is that new productions that start here may one day tour the world.” To inspire the next generation of percussionists and performers, STOMP’s TOM season offers several workshops. These will give people the chance to work with some great performers and perform on stage within the STOMP set. “Our workshops appeal to all ages, musicians, dancers and beginners with no previous dance or drumming experience. They’re inclusive, energetic and fun, and suitable for anyone with a sense of rhythmic adventure.

“It’s been very difficult for all of the arts over the last year or so and by bringing STOMP to TOM we hope to raise funds for the venue and also give a lift to our audiences and the surrounding community.” Although STOMP mostly tours in larger venues now, he says they’re excited to play such a great space. Their show in New York resides in a small, intimate house, so it won’t feel that different when they temporarily relocate to Hove this year. These shows come in the year STOMP celebrates its 30th anniversary. Creators Cresswell and Steve McNicholas first started crafting the show in the building TOM occupies today. Something which morphed into an Edinburgh Fringe production in 1991. The pair have since taken on the venue, recognising the preciousness of a medium-sized venues like it in the city. “It’s a great size for new works, as it’s large enough to accommodate theatre and large bands, but also small and intimate enough for one person shows, stand-up comedy and spoken word.” Cresswell says it’s the perfect venue to explore new ideas in multiple formats, upon a large stage in front of

Cresswell is adamant the creative arts have always helped to shape better communities. “Music, theatre and film has always opened up doors, introducing people from different backgrounds to different viewpoints, encouraging diversity and respect.” It’s the creative arts which bring people together and remind everyone of how we are all connected. That in itself provides a kind of communal therapy, which perhaps we need now more than ever. “You can really feel the sense of relief and enthusiasm in the returning audiences.” continued

Winning countless accolades, including Olivier, Obie and Drama Desk awards, STOMP has turned into a global phenomenon, although Creswell is delighted to be returning to where it all began. “I’m very proud of my Brighton roots. That will never change. We have been very lucky to perform all over the world, meeting wonderful people from all walks of life.” He says the lessons learned growing up and playing gigs in Brighton, as well as working as a street performer, have taught him how to communicate with anyone. “Those skills have been invaluable and remain so. PENELOPE ISLES By Lucy Sheehan

Born in Devon and raised on the Isle of Man, siblings Lily and Jack Wolter made Brighton their home when they formed Penelope Isles. A unique sound and serious work ethic brought the attention of Bella Union records, and from their 2019 debut album Until the Tide Creeps In the band showed themselves capable of producing a truly original brand of fizzy and inventive alt pop. Their sophomore album, ‘Which Way to Happy’ landed in November and was celebrated with a euphoric hometown show at Concorde 2. The band worked on the album across much of lockdown. Isolated in a Cornwall cottage with emotions occasionally reaching fever pitch, the threat of claustrophobia was ever present. But, Lily reflects, despite the album’s intense genesis, it was all worth it. “There’s so much love between me and Jack, we couldn’t do it without each other,” she says. “And even in that chaotic, tiny bubble of a cottage that sent us all mad, we had some really funny, stupid, lovely times together. There’s a lot of emotion in the album.”

The result, ‘Which Way to Happy’ is an eloquent and imaginative meditation on upheaval and uncertainty, revealing a band operating with total confidence over a rich sonic and emotional landscape. Miss Moon takes off with romantic strings before marrying crunching synths and leaping into an upbeat verse, all offset with glittering percussive details. Single Sailing Still starts life with Lily’s celestial vocal, building gradually through swirling guitars, white noise and muttering synths. BBC 6 Music favourite Iced Gems starts life with a brittle drum machine before blossoming with pretty, whirring synths and crystalline guitars. The track maintains its hypnotic air, samples and sonic twitches popping in and out, all the while held down by vocals at once expressive and restrained. The song in particular feels like an emblem for the album in full - an immensely rewarding listening

experience, one in which you have the sense of a band having crafted something very special, just for you. ‘Which Way to Happy’ carefully deposits the listener at the end of what feels like a momentous, expansive journey, like an epic children’s tale, both dreamlike and familiar. It also achieves that elusive goal of unpicking the uncomfortable realities of life in the 2020s to a soundscape of wild, whimsical unreality. ‘Which Way to Happy’ never feels like it shies away from life’s sorrows, but you’ll feel a little better about them afterwards.

Triptych is the brainchild of much loved Brighton promotions company Love Thy Neighbour. Ticket holders are treated to three nights of music at the Hope & Ruin, with each act contributing a track to a limited press of lathe-cut vinyl. Now in its fifth year the lineup is as exciting as ever, featuring Lambrini Girls, Sit Down, Wife Swap USA, Spang Sisters, Hutch, Lucy Feliz, Public Body, Porchlight and Toast. We caught up with some of the brilliant artists gracing the lineup this year.

Your EP ‘Flavour of Labour’ is due out soon - what sounds and influences were you getting excited about while you were making it?

We’re all producers in the band so we get real deep on the production especially with the drums. We had a great engineer, Christoph Skirl when we tracked the record, he works at Echo Zoo Studios and is just insane with the gear. He’s able to get everything to sound exactly how you want it to and without any trouble! We tracked the drums and bass at the studio and the rest we just did at home. DI’d the guitars. Makes me laugh to be honest haha love the contrast between huge production on the drums and then just sticking the guitars straight into the interface at home. I wanted it to be really intense sound, similar to the hardcore band Ajax, where everything is crushed and sounds like its about to explode check out Ajax - Bleach For Breakfast on youtube.

Are there particular themes and concepts you find yourself exploring a lot with Public Body?

I usually just write about my job to be honest. I’m not big on feelings to be honest. They’re great! But I’m not poetic enough to describe anything that deep. So I just think hey, I’ll complain about my 9-5 and try to be somewhat ‘witty’.

Paint me a picture of Public Body in ten years. Where would you like to be? 10 years is mad. I’ll be 40. I refuse to think that far ahead. Sorry!

What would you change about the music industry?

I’d turn streaming services into co-ops so musicians can own and control them.

We are Greg, Katie and Lilly, and after thinking long and hard about how we’d describe our music, we’ve finally settled on ‘doom pop’. It’s like outrageous heavy riffs that borders on metal, but still with pure pop hooks at the core. It’s sickly sweet and foul all at once, and a hell of a good time to play live.

You formed Sit Down as a two piece. Was that about exploiting the creative benefits that come from limitation?

Greg and I met about 8 years ago when I was recruited as a vocalist for a band he was in, and it didn’t take long at all for us to realise that we were just built the same way. After years of various projects since then, Sit Down was actually born from a time when Greg was working at a theme park in Virginia and I was working on a boat in NYC. We knew we wanted to make a new project that was brash and loud and powerful, and we started sending demos back and forth to one another until he packed it all up and moved in with me in New York, and we just went to all these amazing gigs that inspired us so much. At that point I couldn’t play any instruments, which was going to be a problem if we were going to be a 2-piece, so the first thing we did when we returned to the UK and moved to Brighton was Greg started teaching me how to play the drums. Luckily he’s a very talented multi-instrumentalist and I’m very stubborn, and I really connected with the drums as

Tell me about your writing process. Are you jamming stuff and developing it in rehearsal or is it more about bringing the lyrical content to life? Our writing process starts every day at 5am. You wake up, you decant a tin of baked beans and write words on each individual one, gaffa tape them to your toilet seat until a sentence is made. It’s now 7am. What do you do? You go down to the Level and eat a whole wheel of brie, if anyone asks for some, you say NO. 8am, you’re outside Small Pond to practice, it’s not open yet. What do you do? You’re rubbing baby oil all over yourself. You cry. But then you realise, you now have your beans, you have your words and this baby oil is making you shine like the North Star. You never needed a practice room in the first place, the song was inside of you all along.

If Lambrini Girls had a manifesto, what would it be? Live Laugh Shag Vibe

You were part of the Small Pond Emerging record - tell us about the song you contributed, ‘Big Dick Energy.’? Basically, it’s a tongue in cheek approach to toxic masculinity. Not to diminish the male experience of being affected by it, but the song does focus on how disordered views and behaviours instilled into cis men, resultant of toxic masculinity, manifest into ways that affect women and marginalised genders to frustrating extremes.

Describe the Lambrini Girls live show, what should Triptych ticket holders expect?

Lots of Lambrini! And also Phoebe is going to set her naked body on fire so it will be a really fun night.

it was the only instrument that I actually played better the more annoyed I got. But yeah, there was definitely an interesting thrill in seeing just how much noise we could make with only two pairs of hands, and it’s been a rollercoaster ride ever since then.

You guys are well known for your beautifully curated stage outfits - what is it that excites you about making Sit Down a visual as well as sonic spectacle? That’s kind of you! From a young age I was very interested in sewing and making clothes, I think I just watched too much That’s So Raven. Thankfully Greg was totally on board when I first mentioned making clothes for us to wear on stage, as when there’s only two of us and one is sitting down at the back behind a load of metal, you’ve gotta find creative ways to make it still interesting to look at. That being said, Greg has drawn the line on some of the outfits I’ve made, one notable one was a bright orange PVC polo shirt I made for our Reading and Leeds set that just slowly inflated as he played.

You recently added a third member to your line up, amazing Brighton bassist Lilly. Has it changed the way you write or was that more about developing the band’s live impact?

Although I’ve banged on about me and Greg a lot, we’re absolutely blessed to now have Lilly on board with us. After many years as a two-piece we really were starting to find ourselves getting stumped creatively, and bored of hearing ‘You guys are good for a two-piece’. It was just like

why can’t we just be good full stop! Having Lilly join us has just reinvigorated everything, and has really created this holy trinity of vibe. In terms of the writing process, I’ve always likened our roles to Greg being the architect and I’m the interior designer. It takes both parties to build a beautiful house, but with just the two of us, if we ever disagreed it would bring us to a stalemate. Having Lilly on board is the perfect democracy, she has impartial eyes on both sides and can help morph the vision into the exact thing that makes us all buzzing. Before her, I’d say we were almost ready to pack it in. Now we’re more excited than ever.

Sussex Underwater’s First Year A Wave of Awareness

Sussex Underwater is run BY local people, FOR local people. Sussex Underwater are a group who are “passionate about the sea off Sussex and bringing it back to its former glory.” - Catrine Priestley, Admin of Sussex Underwater, who very kindly consented to update me about the wonderous work her collective has been doing this past year. The group was started by local diver Steve Allnut back in March, and it is now being run by a few local divers, including Catrine, pictured below.

They campaigned for the introduction of the Nearshore Trawling byelaw for over 20 years, having witnessed first-hand the destruction of the sea bed. This byelaw was finally passed on 24 March this year, a hard-fought victory for the ocean lovers of Sussex. The law made it illegal to use bottom trawling fishing practices between Shoreham and Selsey. So, what is all the fuss about? Bottom trawling is an incredibly destructive way of fishing which has been used extensively in the Sussex Bay since the 80’s. Huge nets are dragged along the seabed by twin boats, this is called Pair Trawling, in the spring months just as everything is trying to grow. These heavy wide nets are designed to catch Bream but take every other living thing, including sharks, starfish, kelp and seaweed – leaving the seabed a scarred, lifeless, wasteland. Seriously, it is one of the most destructive and allconsuming fishing practices out there. And it has been going on for at least 3 months every year for 30 years. You have to wonder, if this kind of habitat destruction was more visible, say if it was over the land, would it not have been banned from the off? Local divers such as Steve saw this on-going destruction first-hand. They feel that what they had been witnessing for the last 20 years had gone on unchallenged because to so many people, the sea was; “Out of sight, Out of mind”. And he’s right - who can really tell what’s going on underneath that rare sunset over a glassy sea? So, The Sussex Underwater group was set up to show the people what was happening under the water, and to hopefully document the return of the kelp and sea life to our shores.

One of the favourites was the lump sucker, with its bright pinky orange colour and large lips… it is a fascinating creature to see. Steve managed to film a mother sitting over her eggs and oxygenating the water around them – helping her babies have only the freshest water to breathe. And they sit like this for weeks, a struggle which I think many parents stuck in lockdown might juuust be able to relate to!

In March Steve dived one of his favorite places: Bognor Rocks. He had been watching the kelp in this area since 2017. Luckily the beds here are protected by a reef so they are one of the last remaining kelp beds in Sussex. Steve found that the kelp was coming back and it was looking really healthy. Probably due to the lack of activity in the sea due to covid lockdowns the year before. Steve filmed this recovery and got some incredible underwater shots. These formed the basis for the making of Sussex Underwater’s first film, published on their social media sites, and it really took off. Since then, they haven’t looked back. Sussex Underwater now has over 4,000 people in the group, and their reach has stretched beyond even their impressive collection of oceanlovers - some of their posts have reached 100,000 people. This includes fisherman, anglers, divers, local environmental campaigners, schools and churches, to name a few. And best of all - everyone is welcome to join in the conversation, no matter where your love of the ocean comes from. This may seem like a no brainer, but if you’ve ever witnessed a staunch vegan and a fisherman meet at a bar, you know that peaceful discussion is generally off-menu! Sussex Underwater aims to capture the Sussex bay’s return to glory over the next few years. They hope to do this by filming beneath Sussex’s coastline, and are encouraging others to do the same and post on their Facebook group. The most popular videos and photos on the site are the sea creatures. “People are taken back by the variety of sea creatures we have living

They find our video and photos fascinating because of this.” – Catrine Priestley This is just one example of the fascinating ocean neighbours we have been living beside all this time. Did you know that there are dolphins and seals living in the Sussex Bay area too? Sussex Underwater started to get people posting videos of dolphins and seals they were seeing this summer – and it caused quite a big stir. Their divers even managed to get a great film of Dolphins playing in the wake of their boats, to much excitement online of course! As the group has grown so has the awareness of the urgent need to protect our sea. Sussex Underwater’s “Cuttlefish Eggs” campaign back in July really highlighted that “local people have been inspired to help the sea”. There was an unusual summer storm right at the time the cuttlefish were laying their eggs this year, usually they would have been protected by the kelp beds but they are no longer there. Sadly because of this, thousands of eggs washed up on our Sussex shores.

In response Steve sent out a call to arms via the Facebook page and Instagram. He asked people to go down to their local beach with a bucket and pick up the cuttlefish eggs. Then, once it was safe to do so, place them back in the sea. Hundreds of people answered the call. As well as that they had people posting videos and photos of the cuttlefish eggs hatching in the buckets and the releases, spreading awareness of the urgent need to protect our wildlife from man-made disasters such as this.

project in Sussex. As such they were invited along to the Kelp Summit in Shoreham in November, which was run by Sussex Wildlife Trust. Catrine says “This was an exciting and inspiring day, bringing together the science behind why kelp is so important and what it’s return means to local people.” The team were able to make a film for the summit with some of their group members in it, where “it was great to have the local peoples voices there” talking about what the kelps’ return means to them.

“It was really heart-warming to think that these people had really grown to love the marine life on their doorstep and wanted to help it.”

One of Sussex Underwater’s divers, Eric Smith, was heavily involved with getting the trawler ban through and is currently having a documentary made by Big Wave TV about his part in it. The pilot for this was also shown at the summit, and will be an ongoing project for next year - hopefully documenting the return of the kelp after the ecosystem gets a chance to recover from the now-illegal trawlers.

As the group grew so did the topics covered. Some of the most discussed topics this year have been the Southern Water sewage leaks – a hot topic here at BN1 too! One of our divers Paul Boniface posted the sewage he had witnessed when out in the sea. This post went viral and contributed to the debate that was subsequently held on the matter in parliament. Sussex Underwater continues to encourage people to write to their local MP’s about these issues. Sussex Underwater have now become one of many groups that are part of the kelp restoration

“We were really pleased when Eric took a video of the kelps returning to the Indiana wreck off Worthing this year. This is a wreck that was trawled for many years and all the kelp has disappeared. At the beginning of the year, we saw a few kelp plants regrowing and by October there were over 50 plants. The fish were starting to congregate around the kelp

and this is shown in the film we put on the Facebook group. This is incredible news for the kelps recovery and hopefully shows that nature can resort itself.” Next year Sussex Underwater promises to bring you more videos of the kelp returning and much more sea life. They have some ideas to “film inside bream beds and on different wrecks” in the area. They also have a few projects that they are working on with local authorities and organisations, where behind the scenes they will try “to bring back the seabed to its former glory”. They also hope to bring you news and information about how the public can help as these exciting projects develop. As well as this they are also planning to do more school visits and talk to the community to educate and raise awareness of how important our seas are. ABI RIGBY - STYLIST By Lucy Sheehan

You’ve met Brighton’s trailblazing musicians, actors and artists, forging vibrant careers on the international stage with trademark originality. In this series, we introduce you to the people who make it all happen, who make Brighton the culturally renowned city it is from behind the camera, behind the mixing desk, back in the green room. First up, we’d like to introduce Abi Rigby, a stylist whose passion is sustainability, small designers and freeing her clients from that deeply damaging concept: ‘flattering’. What does a stylist do, and what drew you to styling? A stylist’s purpose depends mostly on who’s hiring you and for what. When I dress a band or individual artist, I work to communicate a concept or identity through dress. It’s about getting to know what makes the client feel great while nudging them out of their comfort zone. For a commercial shoot the focus is on the clothing and the way the designer wants their pieces to be received, so is less psychological, more practical. Overall I’d say a stylist presents the visual identity of an artist and the way they want their brand to be seen by bringing pieces together. I was drawn to styling when I reflected on the way clothes have shaped my own life and confidence. As a kid I developed a gut feeling of what I liked in charity shops with my mum. High School and New Look trends really knocked that out of me and it wasn’t until I left my small town that I got it back. To me, styling helps people rediscover that bit of themselves they might have lost. Personal shopping in particular is great to build up a personal style again. It’s not about wearing something crazy, it’s about wearing something for yourself.

I hate the idea of “flattering” clothing and the boundaries we put on our expression because we once got told a bit of our body didn’t fit an ideal. It’s almost impossible to escape, but reaching the freedom of wearing clothes to create a concept or feeling as well as confidence really excites me. For me, when I shift focus from the body to focus on visual language through style, that’s when I feel strongest.

What are some of your favourite projects that you’ve worked on? A favourite project for me was working with videographer Stiwdio Dyfi and photographer Tatyana for the designer Rosie Evans. Working with a group of Welsh creatives in a slate mine felt really important. On a personal level it reconnected me to an area I grew up resenting, but also connecting Rosie’s upcycling to a disused and neglected mine gave the shoot a strangeness. I like shoots that provoke more questions than just the aesthetic. Slow fashion, sustainability and Welsh history really shape my work. What are your top tips for shopping for yourself? Do your research. Whether you’re getting inspiration from people you see online or looking up local designers, go out with the intention of finding a particular item. In the same way, think sustainability where you can. @sustainablefashionforum and @fash_rev have some great articles that discuss the ways we should change our approach to consumption for sustainability. It’s not about shaming people for shopping fast fashion, but changing the ideas around outfit-repeating, up cycling and trends. Trust yourself. It all comes back to the idea of trusting your gut. If we’re able to move away from our ties to what we think society likes, we’re able to disconnect from the idea that we have to be on each new trend. Instead clothes can be a personal expression of taste. Having said that, it was a massive privilege that my mum took me round charity shops when I was younger, and that I have time to shop and research. It’s more complicated than just changing habits, and it’s important to get these conversations happening with awareness not judgement. How would you ideally approach styling with a view to being more planet conscious? By getting to know more small designers. A lot of the time when people hear I’m a stylist they expect me to know every fact about couture designers and fashion history. To me, the excitement for a brand comes in when I see sustainable consciousnesses and hand made pieces that find value in the history of the neglected.

Erinn Hayhow creates using natural dyes and puts the planet at the forefront, linking nature and modernity with oversized androgynous silhouettes. Joshua Samuels brings the concept of reworked into everyday street wear and culture with grungy shapes crossing flowers and bright knits. Cat Rose O’Brien combines witchy designs and historical reference. Rosie Evans, Sunday London, Quiet Ceremony, Ella Rose Label… these are some of the many brands that grab me and view the future of fashion as sustainable and handmade. Renting pieces, borrowing from friends and restyling my own clothes for shoots is how I mostly go about my fittings. Stores like Bleaq, hundred showroom and Hurr are great for rentals. Alongside this, using items from haberdasheries and up-cycling can create a whole new look from the same items I used a previous week. At a video shoot for artist O Hell, we added chains and pins to a second hand ball gown, which I now use for jewellery and sewing. Ideally I’d always be more conscious from the beginning, buying items I know I can multipurpose. What are the most underrated parts of an outfit? Underwear. A great underwear choice is the foundation of an outfit and your comfort. Does Brighton have a style? Brighton’s style feels competitive. Who can go furthest, who looks like they care the least.. but I think this competition can push us to revolutionary ideas if we get it right. Brighton gives people the space to push their boundaries and it’s inspiring. There are so many creatives, every sector and its style merges into one big melting pot with people scrambling for originality where originality is actually the trend and boring becomes original. “Just don’t make me sound like an arsehole.” Kerry Godliman

says as we’re wrapping up. “Often I’m really candid in interviews, then I read it back and wonder why I said some things.” We might be a little bit closer to understanding how the After Life star has managed to simultaneously build successful careers in both drama and stand-up. Self-awareness and brutal honesty are key to engaging with most audiences. It’s early in the morning, so her defences might be lowered. It’s been a week of juggling family life and recording commitments, with an extensive UK tour running in the background. The latter has been calling everywhere, and is due to hit Crawley Hawth on Fri 14 Jan and Brighton’s Komedia on Tues 8 Mar. Characteristically titled BOSH, it details her efforts to cut through the static of modern life and get on with things. With shows twice rescheduled due to the pandemic, she says the dates are now so spread out and scattered that it doesn’t feel like a grind. Some acts might be performing four or five nights every week, but she’s got other things to look out for. “My ideal is doing three shows a week. In the Autumn it felt like a proper little tour. We’d go up North for a few days, then come back, and then off to the West Country. That was really nice.” With examinations of the myriad joys of owning a campervan, the decline of dollies, ornamental tat and trials of navigating lockdown in her dressing gown, she describes it as an update of how she’s been getting on. The title stems from her appearance on hit TV show Taskmaster, where Greg Davies would make light of her enthusiastic strategy by saying she was ‘boshing it’. In a roundabout way, the experience did make Godliman reflect on her nature and the way she did things. Sometimes it is effective. She did win Taskmaster. But it’s something she’s often been embarrassed about. “It’s not very ‘female’. Women are encouraged to not be as aggressive or bolshy. I know it’s the way I am, and it’s effective for comedy, but it’s not so effective for parenting and softer skills.” There’s plenty of things which are socially acceptable for men to indulge in, but there’s an air of negativity when women act in the same way. Especially if they’re ambitious or outspoken. “When I started, the words ‘potty mouthed’ were always being trotted out. But I’ve never heard a man called that.” It’s manifested in a show discussing the power of determination. While her approach to writing doesn’t involve consciously setting out to deal with a specific theme, certain material bubbles up organically. “It’s on your mind, and you evolve routines out of what’s going

on. Then when you retrospectively look back, there’s a theme there naturally.” Lockdown has served the piece quite well. Her material often revolves around domesticity and for several months, that’s all most of us knew. “I could lean quite hard into what I’d written. In fact, the pandemic just turned it up to technicolour. Those things where you’re pissed-off with your kids or your partner, they became heightened. Self-reflection was also turned up… and that’s what comedy is.” While the show talks about getting things done, it also explores why we also need accept failure. Often, it’s not a true setback, but another step in achieving ambitions and developing better self-awareness. After 20 years of touring, she says she’s becoming far more relaxed about what she can achieve with her shows. “The lovely thing with tour shows is that you can be a little more languid with the audience. With comedy clubs, you really have to hit it. It’s like a pop song. 20 minutes of bangers. You can be more explorative on a tour because you’re given a lot more space.” She’s started viewing her stand-up as an ongoing conversation. Becoming better known has enabled a shorthand with audiences, which saves a lot of work when establishing that vital rapport at performances. An emerging star is faced with bounding onstage and needing to quickly explain themselves and why they deserve a chance to speak. When asked if she’s considered developing some catchphrases, she admits ‘Bosh’ is now serving her quite well. “Greg did message me and say I owed him 15%of my tour sales, because he gave it to me. Cheeky fucker,” she says with a huge laugh.

She says she doesn’t have a fear of being misunderstood within her comedy, but there is an apprehension about being underwhelming. “That’s the worst crime… when you go ‘Oh, you all just think this is crap.’” It’s certainly anxiety dream territory, but most comedians will confirm it’s a perpetual concern. Even the wrath of a displeased audience is preferable to one demonstrating indifference or pity. On the other side of her professional life, Godliman recently finished filming for Trigger Point, the latest thriller from Line of Duty creator Jed Mercurio. This six-part ITV drama follows the high-stakes work of a Metropolitan Police bomb disposal unit. “I got to say a lot of acronyms...” Alongside Vicky McClure and Adrian Lester, she faces a sustained terror campaign which threatens London. But the real targets may be closer to home. As well as recording a new podcast for BBC Sounds, which will come out later this year, she’s soon returning to Kent for the filming of Whitstable Pearl’s second season. She plays the titular character, a single mother running

a seafood restaurant who has becomes a private detective. She relishes the change of pace between performing comedy and drama. “I love it. I wouldn’t want to do just one or the other.” There’s a certain amount of delight for her that some people still don’t realise she effortlessly shifts between the two professions. “I’m enjoying the way that stuff I’m getting to do, as an actor, is slightly leaning into my comedy persona. Whitstable Pearl has humour in it. It’s a light drama, with some sideways glances in it, but it’s not a comedy.” If she was motivated to go wholeheartedly into ‘serious’ drama, there’s an admission stand-up might get in the way. Having attended drama school, and there were a few moments in her earlier career when she fantasised about being a ‘proper actor’, she’s realised there’s an unwritten need for neutrality if anyone wants to be taken seriously in roles. “Stand-up means I come with all my baggage, voice and casting brand. Now I bring it to the parts I play. In a way, that’s OK.” Her work on Channel 4’s Adult Material ably supports the suggestion. The dramatic examination of the porn industry saw Godliman playing a scandal-plagued MP. Although the character had a wealth of different experiences to her own life, she was undauntedly a ‘boshy’ individual. Similarly, her role in Sky’s critically-acclaimed Save Me had a rich vein of humour running underneath it, despite offering a dark narrative. “I quite like that territory. If I had aspirations to do Shakespeare or Chekov leads, my stand-up persona wouldn’t be of much value.”

Asked if she would consider doing Shakespeare, she suggests that there’s always a part of an actor’s ego which wants to do everything. She has seen several of his works recently, which undeniably has inspired her on some level. “I came out thinking: ‘I’d LOVE to have a crack at that!’” Because all the other things actors end up doing, like selling sandwiches or telling people they’re nicked, almost every drama production owes a debt to the structures of Shakespeare and Chekov. This month promises a third season of Ricky Gervais’ joyously robust After Life. It follows Tony, a borderline misanthrope whose life has suddenly lost all direction. Godliman plays his late wife Lisa, who has left a series of videos accumulating all her feelings during the final months. Gervais had her in mind when he wrote the part, and she instinctively knew what he was trying to achieve. She’d hesitate to call it easy, but she found the role very natural. It would be vastly different if she were dropped into the RSC to play Lady Macbeth. “I’d have to really bloody work. I’d have to dig around and explore. But when I’m doing Ricky’s stuff, I can just sit with it, and I don’t have get too cerebral. It’s difficult to talk about the acting process without sounding like a wanker, but the part just feels very right.” Her appearance in the show is almost complexly confined to a laptop screen. With many viewers discovering After Life during the pandemic, and only being able to see loved ones in similar circumstances, it’s proved to be a profound and timely dramatic device.

As with her role in Derek, where she played a put-upon but undaunted care home manager, Gervais seems to centre her characters as the show’s moral core. “Lisa needs to be there because Tony is a challenging character, to put it politely. You need her to legitimise his behaviour. It’s all a careful balance, he [Ricky] knows you need one to make the other one work.” In many ways this marries up with what we were talking about earlier. You can bobble along doing bits of drama and have a standup career. It just takes a desire to grab the opportunities. A bit of boshing. When Gervais gave her the parts in After Life and Derek is when everything shifted and it all tied up. As if this wasn’t enough, there’s also some prospective TV writing work coming up. And more stand-up touring. And probably more chances to get stuck in. “None of us design our careers. They just end up as they end up. With acting, you’re just sat on your arse, waiting for people to give you a job. I think that’s why I like stand-up. Because I can control it more. That boshy nature suited it. I can just say ‘Right! RETURNS TO THE STAGE

Back in 1976, an unassuming and seemingly esoteric rock opera revealed itself to an unsuspecting music scene. The year so far had been dominated by the raucous emergence of Queen; ABBA were tightening their grip on the charts and Hi-NRG pop was enticing millions into clubs. By 9 June, just a few days before The Wurzels would top the charts with The Combine Harvester (Brand New Key), the last thing the average pop-fan expected was a double album combining a spoken word narrative, progressive rock and bombastic orchestral strings which drew inspiration from a Victorian sci-fi classic. Yet, 45 years on, Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of the Worlds has become a generational institution. “I had a simple hope that we’d see the album in the charts for one week,” Wayne tells me. “Then I could be happy.” With 15 million copies being sold worldwide, the dream has been far exceeded. Being a producer and composer endowed him with plenty of contacts so the performers list on The War Of The Worlds is almost as impressive as its arrangements and ambitions. The original recording drew together Richard Burton as The Narrator, Broadway star Julie Covington and a range of rock talent including Chris Thompson from Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, The Moody Blues’ Justin Hayward, Phil Lynnot, David Essex and Sussex legend (and ubiquitous 70s bass-playing presence) Herbie Flowers. The work revolves around Burton’s character travelling across a devasted nation in search of his partner, his instantly-recognisable tones detailing the surrounding chaos and destruction against an emotive, soaring soundtrack. “That period in the mid-70s, we had the disco revolution and punk music exploding, then I came along with this very grand scale double album, which had a story being told by someone who’d survived a Martian invasion.” At the core of Wayne’s sonic

creation of this landscape is the juxtaposition between an orchestra and rock band. He describes the arrangement as being like a ping pong match. The organic harmonies of the string section represent the ebb and flow of human experience in the face of overwhelming terror, while the angular, almost industrial, sounds of the band’s instrumentation recreate the cold technological might of the invading aliens. It’s a simple, yet elegant, contextual device which is used with overwhelming effect. While sheer innovation alone could have sealed this unlikely work’s reputation amongst the rock zeitgeist, the legacy has been further developed with spectacular, award-winning, live audio-visual experiences. Starting in 2006, with Wayne conducting a 48-piece orchestra and 10-piece band, along with a virtual representation of Burton, The War Of The Worlds has spawned a series of productions embracing the latest music-tech; especially when trying to ensure audiences hear the performance with an optimum clarity. “That was part of the goal. We started back in 2006 with surround sound to ensure there’s a good quality of sound wherever you sat in these arenas. It was probably one of our largest investments. It’s changed and grown substantially over the years because of new technology.” Touring for the past 15 years has kept him fascinated with what such advances can bring to the production and how audiences react to them. The crystal-clear sound is now augmented by special effects, three panoramic screens and an impressive 30fttall ‘Martian Fighting Machine’ firing real-flame heat rays at the audience. It’s a sizeable operation, which requires up to 12 lorries to carry everything between venues. And the shows are only getting larger, setting out once more on the Life Begins Again tour across the UK in March. There’s been

considerable lessons learned from audience reactions at London’s The War of The Worlds: The Immersive Experience. Based in an old metal exchange on Leadenhall Street, this permanent exhibit brings visitors close-up to Wayne’s adaptation across its 21 rooms. “We didn’t expect it to do quite as well, but then I never expected my original double album to be 330 weeks consecutively in the album charts. This has taken on a life of its own and is still growing.” There are now plans to open similar attractions at locations around the world. Taking technology like VR and 5D to a new level, it’s offered plenty of inspiration for what can be introduced into the touring production. Although adopting plenty of new tech to enhance the shows, Wayne has been eager to remain faithful to his original work. In turn, he was also determined to honour the source material during the album’s composition, meeting with HG Wells’ son to secure blessing for the project. “He wanted to know what we would be doing with it. His father was never keen on what had previously been done with his novel, versions of it were always, for some reason, in contemporary America.” A glaring omission by many adaptations was in the title’s definitive article. Wells had created his story as being the ultimate conflict between planets. Away from the shock and awe of the set and special effects, there are several new introductions within the show’s cast. Liam Neeson replaces Burton’s The Journalist, who’s

prescience is lent by cutting edge holography. The Hollywood star spent five days in New York being filmed and recorded, allowing his image to roam the show’s stage and appear to be interacting with other cast members. It’s an inspire choice of casting. His recognisable voice offering the same level of gravitas as the original narrator. Wayne says he’s one of those people who command any room they’re in. “There’s been a couple of occasions, where I’ve been having meals with him, and strangers would stop dead in their tracks. When you see that, you know he can reach people.” Joining the onstage performers is Blue singer, and rising West End star, Duncan Blue, whose displaying new levels of versatility in his tole as Parson Nathanial. “I’d much earlier gone to him with a different role, but he was scheduled to have his debut solo album released. His record company wouldn’t release him to do our tour, so it didn’t work out then. He had a great pop-type voice in Blue, but now he’s a lot more ‘rock’.” The Parson is a man on the edge, the invasion’s unspeakable horrors making him question everything he held dear. Clare Richards from Steps plays his wife, attempting to comfort him in this darkest hour. “I’m being surprised by so many of the new guest artists, who’ve come from a different area.” Another familiar face joining the cast is dancer, Kevin Clifton. Instead of impressing the judges on Strictly, he’s now planning humanity’s

fightback as The Artilleryman. This TV favourite’s cheerful demeanour perfectly fits the role of the optimistic soldier, who is convinced the fight isn’t over. “When he came to visit and talk about the role, he just had ‘it’. You want people who can interpret the character in their own way, and he’s just nailed that.” Returning from the 2018 tour is the prodigious talents of Nathan James. The frontman of hard-rockers Inglorious, he brings sheer power to the Voice Of Humanity role. Keeping one ear on the regional recordings, the show welcome back Justin Heywood. Previously performing on the initial five tours, he’s made The Sung Thoughts of The Journalist’s part his own over the last 45 years. Like its source material, Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of ‘The War of The Worlds, both as a recorded work and in the live arena, keys into very primal fears. We all worry about the unknown or suffering at the hands of forces many times bigger than ourselves. For many, it’s been the first orchestral work they’ve listened to, and perfectly demonstrates the ability of huge arrangements to create an emotional response. At the time of recording, it could be viewed as a response to the cold war. Wells’ original text certainly was a reaction to a rapidly changing world, where humans were being side-lined by technology.

new threat, and society is forced to adapt. “It’s such a parallel to the world we’ve been living in during the last two years. There’s a whole sequence on the album where one of the survivors walks through an empty city wondering if it will ever come alive.” If Martians and their assortment of terrifying war machines will ever land in Surrey and take over the Earth remains to be seen. But this work isn’t so much a prediction as an exploration of a civilisation struggling with mortality and paranoia about the unknown. Which is how it’s become such an enduring part of the music landscape, still winning and captivating new audiences across this fragile planet “Looking back over forty years, especially with all these tours, we’re seeing three generations of people who are showing up. It’s one of these things which seems to have carried on. I feel very proud.” Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version Of The War Of The Worlds sets off on a UK tour in March 2022, including visits to The Brighton Centre on 27 – 28 March, and London’s The O2 on Sat 9 April.

Remove the cooked tomato and kiwi from the tin and return the veg to the oven for 10 mins. Remove the skin from the kiwi and scoop the flesh into a bowl with the tomato, garlic, half the coriander, bouillon and paprika. Use a hand blender to blitz to a smooth salsa.

As the second new moon rises after the winter solstice, The Chinese New Year is just around the corner. Occurring on the 1st of February 2022, the Spring Festival will reign in the Year of the Tiger and commence several days of celebrations marking the start of a new year.

Those born in a tiger year, can expect to succeed in their career with hard work and determination in 2022. In Chinese astrology, each sign is also ruled by an earthly and heavenly branch. This Lunar New Year, the 2022 Year of the Tiger will be a ‘water tiger’ which is governed by the element of wood.

This annual event - also known as Spring Festival or the Lunar New Year - lasts from Chinese New Year’s Eve until February 11 and is followed by preparations for a Lantern Festival held on February 15.

For those born during a Metal Tiger year, being 1950 and 2010, are known to be active, aggressive, and passionate. The combination of Metal and Tiger produces a person who is direct, unorthodox, stubborn, drastic in their behaviour. Metal Tigers flourish in competitive environments.

In Chinese Astrology, the year of the Tiger is the third of twelve signs in the Chinese zodiac, as opposed to western astrology, which has 12 zodiac seasons that all sit within one year. The New Year marks the transition from one sign to another, this year is the moving from Ox to Tiger.

Melissa Gordon - Liquid Gestures Towner Eastbourne

An artist, curator, and writer, Melissa Gordon ‘s practice is concerned with the body, gesture, and painting, through the lens of feminism. Liquid Gestures is a critically-lauded solo exhibition featuring large-scale paintings that further her examination of modern art histories, ideas of authorship, and the appropriation of certain techniques. She invites us to consider the significance and influence of artists such as Janet Sobel in relation to drip painting, and Dada poet Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven in relation to the readymade. Their contributions to art history have been eclipsed in a culture of stillpresent gender inequality.today. This exhibition revolves around grids and images silk-screened directly onto the canvas, creating a framework which plays host to an array of intriguing references. Photographs and texts relating to her research are then painted or printed onto the surface, while outlines and silhouettes of tools, clothing, and domestic objects slip between colourful swathes of paint.

Getting involved in campaigning for causes you believe in does make things happen. Hello my fellow Brightonians, where does the time go? So much has happened since last we spoke, is it me or is time definitely going faster? I hope this article finds you well in these strange times. I wanted to talk to you in this latest column, on the power and impact that campaigning can have. There are many times when I myself feel like I have the weight of the world on my shoulders, what feels like a tidal wave of environmental issues will be impossible to make a dent in and that the rolling doom of news is just too much. Well I am here to tell myself and you fine people that it’s all utter nonsense. You should ignore the negative voices saying, “we won’t make a difference”, “no one else does so why should I” and so on. Don’t listen to it! Do the opposite! Roll up your sleeves, get involved and take some action because friends it works, it really does - being involved in something you are passionate about with a like-minded group of people can create real change.

Surfers against Sewage and other water pressure groups force the Government to U-turn on adding Water Quality legislation into the Environment Bill After three long years of campaigning by Ocean Activists and NGOs, the Environment Bill finally received royal assent in November and has been made into law. We now have the Environment Act 2021. The Environment Act is a key piece of legislation that sets out how the environment will be protected and restored for decades to come. The final result may still have some improvements to be made, however this act is much, much better than it could have been, thanks to the tireless campaigning of Ocean Activists and incensed members of the public who aired our views, piled the pressure on lawmakers, our MPs and fought for change. Collectively, our voice has been pivotal in achieving key improvements to the law on sewage pollution, plastic pollution and ocean recovery. This is proof that people power works: #EndSewagePollution! Locally here in Brighton, we wrote and talked to our local politicians, we demonstrated against the water companies releasing raw sewage into our coastal waters, we teamed up with other water groups, sea swimmers and South coast sirens and collaborated. We contacted news agencies and held interviews which aired on local & national TV and made an impact on Social Media. And we = a group of local people, who live here in Brighton, who care about the sea.

against Sewage have been instrumental in the Deposit Return System legislation being introduced in Scotland in 2023 & England in 2024 which will place a monetary value on plastic waste that is proven to reduce plastic pollution on streets and in our open spaces. Locally we worked with another organisation called Leave No Trace alongside Brighton Council and developed ‘Zero Waste’ sections of Brighton beach which will be rolled out again into 2022. Leave No Trace signed up 100s of tourists and residents to sign the Brighton Pledge - an initiative to keep the beaches cleaner. Together, alongside other marine organisations, we collectively mobilised 100s of volunteers to remove hundreds of kgs of waste off of the beaches making a huge difference to the local ecosystem. And we will continue to work to remove this waste from our beaches. A local surf group campaigned and took action to negotiate with Shoreham Port Authority to reopen access to a surf break that was closed off during lockdown. This was successful. Surfers again can now surf that break. Our own Sussex Wildlife Trust campaigned passionately to become a collaborative partner in the Sussex Kelp Restoration Project since the landmark implementation of the Sussex Inshore Fisheries & Conservation Authority’s Nearshore Trawling Byelaw in March 2021. The byelaw covers 300km2 of our local coastline and the project hopes to recover kelp, marine life and fish stocks. Marcus Rashford becomes a figurehead, that thousands rallied round and forced (another) government U-turn (twice on this issue) on free school meals to help feed hungry children outside school term time. I could go on, but have a word count limit I should probably adhere to.

OK I get it, campaigning works, I’m keen to get involved - what should I do? Another great question my friend - pick your cause (or causes) lookup the groups involved, nationally or locally, and join them! Roll up your sleeves, and take some action and then take stock of the impact you can have.

But what about the little voice that says I can’t make a difference?

That’s fantastic! What else has been done by campaigning people I hear you say?

Well, you tell that little voice that it’s wrong, that you can and that you will.

Paul Thomas Anderson makes a welcome return with a thoughtful coming-of-age comedy. Picture day at Gary Valentine’s school leads to an encounter with a bored photographer's assistant. Cue plenty of mischief, fast driving, an age-inappropriate relationship and a world of nuanced comedic (and slightly transgressive) delights. Alana Haim, Cooper Hoffman, Sean Penn, Tom Waits, Bradley Cooper and Benny Safdie all put in some terrific work in one of the Boogie Nights and Punch Drunk Love director’s lighter works. This intriguing tale of quick hustles, fading stardom and unlikely romance is set in the 70s, so there’s plenty of kitsch nostalgia, an absolutely sublime soundtrack, outdated cultural attitudes and more groovy good times than you can shake a space-hopper at.

To disguise the 1943 Allied invasion of Sicily, members of British intelligence went to extraordinary lengths to fool Axis high command. Operation Mincemeat, saw them obtain the remains of a tramp, dressed him as a Royal Marines officer and placed personal items on him identifying him as the fictitious Captain William Martin. The body was released into the sea, just off the southern coast of Spain where it could be found by Nazi sympathisers, carrying correspondence between two British generals suggesting the Allies were about to invade Greece and Sardinia. Colin Firth, Kelly Macdonald, Matthew Macfadyen and Penelope Wilton star in John Madden’s war drama looking at this elaborate and highly successful deception.

Two single women meet in a hospital room, where they are both going to give birth. One is middle aged and is embracing the experience, while the other is adolescent and scared. The two women form a strong bond with one another, as they both confront the enormous changes and challenges taking place.

James Cameron’s long-threatened sequel to his magnum opus, bringing in Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, Vin Diesel and Michelle Yeoh. Jake Sully and Neytiri are living an idyllic life on Pandora, but when an old threat resurfaces, they’re forced to relocate.

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT BN1 catches up with Caroline Murdock who lives in Lewes and has captured these lovely pictures on her early morning jogs.

“I have returned to live in Lewes about 8 years ago after living in Melbourne, Australia. I grew up living nearby on Ashdown Forest where my running began. I started running when I was a teenager and I soon discovered the benefits were more than physical. I started to run for my mind. I found getting out into the countryside gave me space and time to myself. I carried on running when I travelled abroad realising it was a great way to see the local area in a often limited time frame, and I could even dip into relatively unsafe areas as I was only there briefly! Running at high altitude in Bolivia was a particularly memorable experience! I started taking photos when I found myself in awe of the sunrises I would witness and I wanted to share them with my husband and kids back at home. I now find running a great way of looking after my mental health whilst exercising my dog, and fitting it in around working in Lewes, my husband's sustainable building company Kind Construction and caring for two young children. Running at Dawn allows you to see the world without humans. It let's you see and feel nature whilst your body breathes it in (often gasping up the big hills of the South Downs!). It gives me time for myself without the demands of caring for family and doesn't interfere with my daily commitments. It makes me feel alive. We are currently building a hempcrete gym in my garden for me to train Personal Training clients in, so I am hoping it won't replace my morning runs but rather make them easier!”

2021 has ended and we now have a roughly eleven month reprieve from hearing any music that involves sleigh bells. For many of us, the dawn of the new year will have been heralded in with a heavy night and lots of promises of change or self-improvement that are begging to be broken. Yes, new year resolutions are a perilous business - there is nothing worse than trying to organise a night at an Argentinian steakhouse a week after New Year’s Eve, only to be met with your mates’ smirks and claims that you drunkenly stated that you would go vegan in the early hours of New Year’s Day. As such, careful precautions must be taken before engaging in any resolution based antics. All promises that you may want to make to yourself, or exclaim loudly to others, should be carefully vetted and given due consideration. Do you really want to commit to a significant dietary change? Who knows what kind of lunatics you may meet if you join your local gym? Do you have the mental and physical fortitude required to take up such a strenuous sport as golf? Sure, no one wants to actually have to spend time thinking about these kinds of things - but it is also important to save face and conserve energy. So, in an effort to aid the decision making process before signing up to a New Year’s Resolution that ends up being forgotten at the moment it becomes mildly inconvenient, I present to you: A Hermit’s Guide to New Years Resolutions.

Be Realistic The first point of consideration before committing to a resolution is whether it is actually achievable for you. All humans are fallible, but some more than others. So, in the words of (probably) some ancient, long-dead, Greek dude: ‘Know thyself.’ Knowing whether you are the kind of person that is able to follow through with the promises you make is a good starting point, as is knowing whether you have the time, or the will-power, to commit to a new exercise routine that would make even Eddie Hall wince. If you aren’t some super-human-mecha-mutant, then maybe consider just saying you’ll go swimming once a week. Similarly, if you aren’t really a fan of meeting new

people, or people in general, then, for the love of god, do not join a club for a team based sports or activities. Nothing will put off an introvert faster than joining a five-a-side team, only to be greeted with teammates that simply do not understand personal space. A similar attitude can be applied to changes of a dietary nature. If you’re down the pub every other day then saying you’re going to stop drinking is a bit silly. No one over the age of twelve can just sit in the pub and simply have a lemonade, can they? No - so don’t even try. Likewise, announcing that you’re suddenly a vegan when your favourite pastime is shoving lamb doners down your gullet is a bit of a false start. Rather, the sensible option here is to commit to something [sometimes]. Instead of stopping drinking, why not just drink [less]. In place of going vegan, only eat meat and dairy on special occasions. Instead of starting up a new gym routine, just say you’ll exercise more.

Be Noticable By being vague, you can be non-committal while seeming otherwise. Realistically, you’re not actually going to hold yourself accountable for

anything, so the important thing here is to look like you’re doing the stuff you said you would. It’s not like you’re with other people all the time, so, if, while hanging out with friends, you announce ‘I’m going swimming!’ and head off, everyone will sit there thinking: ‘Oh, wow, Barry really is exercising more!’ You only have to do that once a week, and people will notice that you seem to be sticking to your New Year’s Resolutions for once. Making New Year’s Resolutions isn’t really about self-improvement. That’s just what the robots disguised as people who change out their old models for new, fitter models every year want you to think. What these resolutions are really about is making everyone [think] that you’re trying to change. Which is why whatever resolution you are going for, it should be noticeable that you are at least trying. This is why the fitness or diet ones are good - you can make a big fuss and show. When out for dinner with your mates, still order the steak and simply say “Wow, I haven’t had meat for so long, I can’t wait to eat this!” The amount of time you judge as ‘long’ to have not eaten meat is relative, so don’t even have to worry about lying to your friends. Does it matter that you had a BLT for lunch? Hell no! That was ages ago for a carnivore such as yourself! Social media can really help you with this step, too. Every time you do fall in line with your resolution, make sure you plaster your social media accounts with evidence of it. Everyone knows that the content you see on social media is God’s-Honest-Truth™.

That’s the advice everyone gives about setting goals, right? ‘Keep it vague!’ Keeping your resolution vague and simple allows for it to be interpreted in many different ways - which is exactly what we want. A good example is saying you would like to ‘improve at something.’ Improvement is relative to where you are already - so if you are really bad at something then improvement could be within

Hove Museum is hosting a free exhibition from celebrated British ceramicist Richard Slee, entitled Mantlepiece Observations, open until 25th January. ‘Down from London: Spencer Gore & Friends’ sees a landmark exhibition return to Brighton Museum & Art Gallery for the first time in 100 years. The ‘colourful display’ revisits the work of the Camden Town Group and explores ‘the passions and principles driving the friends to use bold styles and colour to transform English painting in the early 20th century.’ Brighton Craft Fair returns in February and is an amazing opportunity to browse, support and buy from Sussex’s most talented artists. They say: ‘Our eclectic mix of stalls will leave you spoilt for choice!’ From early February, you can visit the Regency Town House on Brunswick Square for the ‘Emotive Collective Exhibition’, where ‘the collective of artists and designers, some recent University of Brighton MA graduates, others, current students, have allowed their individual journeys to lead them to unpredictable discoveries…’ The exhibition explores many themes, all connected by the urge to provoke conversation. Worthing Museum and Gallery is free to visit and from 2022 hosts some brilliant exhibitions, including ‘Cutting Edge - Contemporary Costume Collecting’ for fans of fashion and ‘Open21’, an exhibition unveiling the very best of Sussex’s contemporary artists.

THE DEVIL’S TOWER OF NACHOS... Cheesus Lord Have Mercy

STUFF FOR PICO DE GALLO 2 small tomatoes, chopped 1/2 diced red onion 1 jalapeño, seeded and minced Handful freshly chopped coriander 1 tbsp lime juice

STUFF FOR ASSEMBLY 1 can black beans, rinsed and drained Biggest bag of thick tortilla chips you could find More grated cheddar So much sour cream As much Guacamole as you can afford

MAKE THE PICO DE GALLO In a medium bowl, combine tomatoes, onion, jalapeño, coriander, and lime juice. Season with salt and pepper.

ASSEMBLE THE NACHOS Choose your assembly container wisely and according to the size of your eyes – a big bowl is good, a small bucket is best. Spread a thin layer of cheese sauce around the container. Using a 1/4 of the tortilla chips, spread an even layer of chips over the cheese sauce. Top with 1/3 of the remaining cheese sauce, 1/3 of the cooked beef, 1/3 of the black beans, 1/3 of the grated cheese, 1/3 of the remaining pico de gallo, and 1/3 of the remaining sour cream. Drizzle with hot sauce.

STUFF FOR BEEF 1 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 1 packet beef mince 3 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 tsp ground cumin 1/2 tsp paprika Hot sauce to taste MAKE THE BEEF In a large skillet or frying pan, heat oil over medium-high heat. Add the beef mince and season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until no pink remains, for about 6 minutes. Drain excess fat, then add garlic, cumin, paprika, and hot sauce. Cook, stirring until fragrant for about 1 minute more. Remove from the heat and set aside. MAKE THE CHEESE SAUCE In a medium pot, melt butter over medium heat. Add flour and stir until an even paste has formed. Slowly stir in milk, then continue to cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until thickened. Add cheese and stir in until melted. Taste, and decide you need to add more cheese. Stir. Add even more cheese. Season with salt, pepper and more hot sauce, if you like.

Repeat layering the chips, cheese sauce, beef, black beans, grated cheese, pico de gallo and sour cream twice more, then chuck the remaining nacho chips on top. Place a dinner plate on top of the container and carefully flip over. Slowly reveal your inhumane creation, the Unholy Tower of Beef and Cheese. Top the nacho tower with any bits you have left - sour cream, pico de gallo, grated cheese etc. Drizzle with hot sauce, add a bit of coriander and a dollop or two of guacamole. Cross your heart and hope to die. Tuck in.

TOASTED MARSHMALLOW SPRINKLE FUDGE BROWNIE CHOCOLATE DEMON PIE - With Ice Cream!

INGREDIENTS 100g pancetta 50g pecorino cheese 50g parmesan 3 large eggs 350g spaghetti 2 plump garlic cloves, peeled and left whole 50g unsalted butter Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper STEP 1 Put a large saucepan of water on to boil. Finely chop the 100g pancetta, having first removed any rind. Squash 2 peeled plump garlic cloves with the blade of a knife, just to bruise it. Set aside. STEP 2 Beat the 3 large eggs in a medium bowl and season with a little freshly grated black pepper. Finely grate 50g pecorino cheese and 50g parmesan and mix them together. Mix most of the cheese in with the eggs, keeping a small handful back for sprinkling over later. Set aside. STEP 3 Add 1 tsp salt to the boiling water, add 350g spaghetti and when the water comes back to the boil, cook at a constant simmer, covered, for 10 minutes or until al dente (just cooked). STEP 4 While the spaghetti is cooking, fry the pancetta with the garlic. Drop 50g unsalted butter into a large frying pan or wok and, as soon as the butter has melted, tip in the pancetta and garlic. STEP 5 Leave to cook on a medium heat for about 5 minutes, stirring often, until the pancetta is golden and crisp. The garlic has now imparted its flavour, so take it out with a slotted spoon and discard. STEP 6 Keep the heat under the pancetta on low. When the pasta is ready, lift it from the water with a pasta fork or tongs and put it in the frying pan with the pancetta. Don’t worry if a little water drops in the pan as well (you want this to happen) and don’t throw the pasta water away yet. STEP 7 Take the pan of spaghetti and pancetta off the heat. Now quickly pour in the eggs and cheese. Using the tongs or a long fork, lift up the spaghetti so it mixes easily and evenly with the egg mixture. It should thicken but not scramble. STEP 8 When everything is coated, add a few tablespoons of the extra pasta cooking water to keep it saucy. You don’t want it wet, just moist. Season with a little salt, if needed. STEP 9 Use a long-pronged fork to twist the pasta on to the serving plate or bowl. Serve immediately with a little sprinkling of the remaining cheese and a grating of black pepper. If the dish does get a little dry before serving, splash in some more hot pasta water and the glossy sauciness will be reborn.

INGREDIENTS 3/4 cup flour 1 cup caster sugar 1/4 cup cocoa powder 1 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp salt 115G butter, melted 2 large eggs, beaten 2 tsp vanilla 1/2 cup chopped toasted pecans 2 handfuls of mini marshmallows FOR THE FROSTING 1/4 cup butter, melted 1/4 cup cocoa powder, sifted 1/4 cup evaporated milk 1 cup icing sugar, sifted Chocolate Sprinkles STEP 1 Preheat the oven to 180C. Butter a 9-inch round baking tray (with a removable bottom if possible). Set aside. STEP 2 Sift and mix together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt in a bowl. STEP 3 In a separate bowl beat together the melted butter, eggs and vanilla. Add to the dry ingredients and mix until smooth. Stir in the toasted nuts. Pour into the prepared pan. Bake on a middle shelf of the oven for 25 mins, or until a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean. STEP 4 While the pie is in the oven, make the frosting by mixing all ingredients together in a bowl, beating with an electric whisk until smooth and thick. STEP 5 When the pie is cooked (toothpick test comes out clean), sprinkle the mini marshmallows on top and return to the oven for a few minutes to melt and toast the marshmallows. Then remove from the oven and carefully spread the chocolate frosting over top. Sprinkle on sprinkles and serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

LOCAL HEROES: LUCY PINTO AT THEBOX By Jessie McGregor

TheBox is Brighton’s first boxing-inspired fitness studio – they don’t just box, they lift, jump and flow too. But more than that, they have empowered the young and the most vulnerable of our city with an awe-inspiring attitude to fitness and independence.

Next year TheBox will be kicking off their long-awaited work with the YMCA and the women at St Patrick’s Shelter. St Patrick’s Shelter houses women aged 18+ who in some way or another, have been at risk of or have experienced homelessness.

TheBox was founded in 2018 by Lucy Pinto, fitness trainer and creative director of the fitness studio. “Over the past (nearly) four years the community has really grown at the studio creating a safe space for everyone.”

The team identified boxing as a skill the women were keen to learn and so who better than TheBox to work with St Patrick’s to help enable women to feel a sense of independence and accountability while also helping them to get back into the community.

TheBox are an LGBTQ+ friendly gym who support anyone with extra needs, offering a safe space for people to train. This is a gym that has a real community feel, “you’ll see faces who have been with us from day one to new faces that are supported by our current members” says Lucy. The main ethos at TheBox is a simple one: they believe fitness should be accessible to everyone.

“We offer an unpretentious and results-oriented community that’s invested in your goals and success. Check your ego at the door and get ready to sweat!”

The trainers at TheBox are world class and “without the ego and bull”. Each has their own style and with a friendly attitude, they can guarantee you a great workout with “banging beats”.

TheBox’s classes are designed to empower everyone that walks through their doors. From their weekly signature boxing classes to their Foundation Barbell course. We love the ethos of TheBox and the amazing work that they are doing with Brighton’s youth and vulnerable citizens. There truly is something for everyone at TheBox, we can’t wait to get a pair of gloves on!

When TheBox first opened they ran a free ‘Sunday Service’ for the young people in Brighton (kids aged 5-16). It being such a success, they realized that they had come across a unique niche in the market – getting our kids exercising in a way that is exciting! Their boxing trainer Lewis Woods, who I’m told is also an “awesome cook”, has taken Sunday Service classes from day one and has really turned them into his own. TheBox have now worked with various local schools including Roedean and Benfield. They are also currently running weekly sessions at Brighton Girls Prep school and will be starting boxing and strength sessions with the Senior school in January.

“Our main aim for these sessions is to show young people, women in particular, how empowering boxing is.” Since working in schools the trainers at TheBox have learnt that not only does boxing provide a fun and engaging form of exercising for kids, but the skills that they learn also transfer to the classroom as well. They champion teamwork and positive socialising with schoolmates, as well as releasing all that pent up classroom energy into a disciplined sport, which can help kids concentrate once they get back inside. Current studies show that nationally just 14% of girls aged between 5 and 16 achieve recommended levels of physical activity, dropping to 10% of girls aged 13-16. TheBox is fighting tooth and nail to correct this gross negligence of young girls’ fitness and empowerment! Speaking about her own journey in discovering boxing, Lucy says “As a former ballet dancer with body confidence issues, I started boxing at 14 and realised that this was a sport where no one was judging you on your weight and your looks - it was just about pure fitness, enjoying the process and improving yourself. That’s a strong message to send to young girls.” Especially in this social media age, where young girls are being bombarded with photoshopped instagram stars sporting impossibly perfect bodies!
