July 2012 Welcome to the July edition of BN1 Magazine. Well, it’s a typical English Summer, a mixture of wind, rain and sunshine. But don’t let that put you off, there’s plenty to see and do this July and with some events relying on the blustery weather this month it couldn’t be more fitting. The Kite festival weekender, Kitesurfing events and even Paddle Round The Pier, Brighton and the world’s biggest beach and watersports festival, need the British breeze. So grab your sunnies and your wellies and enjoy what the coast has to offer. Zoe Lyons

what’s on in JULY Like true Brits we’ve been starving for some sunshine, longing to get those pasty legs out and finally the Great British Summer has arrived...umbrella packed just in case, check. Yes, better weather is here and we welcome warmer temperatures and sunburnt shoulders with a whopping cheer! This month not only can we bask in sunshine down the beach for Paddle Round the Pier, we can also enjoy a Summer Ice Rink at the Brighton Centre...O’ Brighton we love your irony! Perhaps the coolest place to be this summer (wahey!) the indoor ice rink will set on the 23rd July for four weeks giving us a chance to, well, make a tit out of ourselves in skates, of course. Highlighting this month we have the glorious return of Paddle Round the Pier; Brighton simply wouldn’t be the same without it. On the 7th - 8th July come down to Hove Lawns to, well, again watch some of us make a tit out of ourselves sailing ‘the most ridiculous craft’ around the West Pier. Meanwhile, there will be a host of other land and water activities including live bands, games, world food and kids areas, so get involved! If you haven’t heard enough about the 2012 games already, a quick mention that the Olympic Torch Relay comes to Brighton on the 16th July, check out BN1’s listings for more information, but I hear that Hove Park is a brilliant vantage point to see the Olympic Flame pass by. Finally, a few happenings; we have Straight Up 2012 at Brighton Dome on the 14th July promising to be a night for all lovers of urban dance and music with its Hip Hop youth dance show. Also, from the 6th - 22nd July enjoy CMP festival, an annual arts festival in two of our city-centre churches. Enjoy! By Deborah Fairfiekd
PatchFest Community Festival 7th July 1pm Lewes Road/Elm Grove/Hartington Road “Come and join us for our annual frolic at the greatest little festival in the south east!” A volunteer run community festival for the Lewes Road/Elm Grove area of Brighton. Oh and Radio 4A will stream live to the world! To volunteer and for more information visit www.williamclarkepark.org
Brighton Kite Festival 7th - 8th July Stanmer Park, 11am-5pm Putting some colourful shapes in the sky, the Brighton Kite Festival returns in its 33rd consecutive event and best of all it’s completely free! Kite friendly for those of all abilities, prepare for an amazing show with some world class flyers as well as some of the best team displays you will ever see. One of the longest running kite festivals in the UK, it’s worth a look so come on down.

Sat 7th July Hove Lawns Barefoot Wine and Ben Fogle are joining forces in a bid to keep Brighton’s beaches ‘barefoot friendly’ in 2012. As part of these efforts Ben and scores of volunteers will converge to clean the award-winning Hove Lawns beach on Sat 7 July. The national campaign, which kicked off in April, is running throughout spring and summer and intends to build on the huge success of 2011’s series of events. MUSIC PREVIEWS By Brad Middleton
Destroyer + Us Baby Bear Bones Haunt, 12th July
Kimya Dawson Haunt, 10th July
Destroyer is primarily a vehicle for the multitalented Dan Bejar which he started all the way back in 1995 in Vancouver, Canada. Having now released nine albums, including his latest Kaputt late last year, his back catalogue is wide-ranging and impressive. Some albums are filled with predominantly wonky pop songs, whilst others veer towards the poetic and nonsensical. Others are simply rants, whether it be against the music industry or just humanity in general as was displayed on the ‘This Night’ album. Whether he turns with a band to back him up or simply alone with a guitar this is sure to be an interesting gig.
Kimya Dawson was the beautiful voice and ukulele behind the brilliant Moldy Peaches that came to prominence in 2007 when they had a bunch of songs featured on the soundtrack to the classic slacker film ‘Juno’. Needless to say after that it all changed for Kimya. Public attention of her music grew more widespread and went through the roof when in 2009 she won a Grammy. That was big news and suddenly Dawson was propelled from playing small to medium size venues to playing huge venues. Her music hasn’t changed that much I’m glad to announce from those early experiments of the Moldy Peaches and the shows still promise lovely songs and hugs for everyone. This being her first show in town since 2009 it’s a much welcomed return for one of the people who bought the ukulele back into vogue and which subsequently has been a big influence on a lot of people who make music in this town. It promises to be a fun and beautiful show.
Inspiral Carpets Concorde 2, 27th July
Junior Murvin Concorde 2, 28th July
When my Editor asked me to write a preview of this show I couldn’t quite believe that it was the Inspiral Carpets. It seems they are back and what’s more with new material too so Madchester is back on! Having originally formed in the 80s they came to prominence when anyone who played with guitars and took the much heralded trip exploded from out of the city and into the national consciousness. For the Carpets that moment came with their warm psychedelic popness of ‘This is How It Feels’ and their debut appearance on Top of the Pops. They don’t just have one song though so don’t be disappointed if they don’t play that, there is still plenty more of the back-catalogue to pick and choose from. That coupled with the new material should make this an interesting gig for fans of old or new persuasion.
Summer should definitely be here by the time Junior comes to town and what better way to spend the opening night of the Olympics than to switch the TV off and get out the house. Murvin has been at this game now for five decades and is a master of his craft. He initially had a modicum of success in the then burgeoning reggae scene in Kingston, Jamaica in the very early 1970s but subsequently decided to take a few years out to master his craft. His return could not have paid better dividends he successfully auditioned for the king of all dub reggae, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry no less, with the now classic tune ‘Police & Thieves’, later brilliantly covered by The Clash. A whole catalogue of great albums followed and the world was a poorer place without his music when he chose to retire in the 1990s but now he is back and tonight will play the whole of his classic ‘Police & Thieves’ album in its entirety as well as their other great moments.

PLaygroup Festival 2012 You may have noticed there are a lot of festivals all vying for your attendance, so many in fact that it can be a bit of a headache choosing which one to go to.
Of course you could base your choice on headline acts playing. But beyond some big name acts, a lot of these events are simply not trying hard enough to keep their punters entertained. Which is why we’re totally set on making the short journey to Eridge Park, near Tunbridge Wells, for Playgroup on 3 Aug. Based around the idea of creating an event that really was special, Playgroup’s a three day affair that brings together a huge group of incredibly talented and creative people. Rather than give their crowds crusty old rock acts that stopped being relevant years ago, they pride themselves on booking some of the area’s best and most electrifying bands and acts. Since throwing together regular themed festival-in-a-club events at venues all over Brighton for a while, the organisers realised the next step was to do a festival-in-a-festival. They started a search for the perfect place to hold the perfect little gathering and began to put together a crack team of décor builders, good friends, circus performers and all the grassroots musical acts that make a festival something special. As for their venue? Eridge Park is a beautiful ancient deer reserve that has remained unchanged since Norman times. This is easily the most beautiful setting for any event like this you’ll ever find. Playgroup’s organisers are intent upon keeping the event an intimate affair, meaning it has a friendlier vibe than many of the larger festivals. If anything, people are encouraged to interact, create and take ownership of the proceedings. Some of the innumerable musical treats on offer include: those well-dressed purveyors of swing breaks The Correspondents will be one of the big hits of the weekend, seven piece Hip-Hop party-starters Boycom, eccentric Dubstep dandy High Rankin and
Ghetto-funk-fuelled Electro Swing from Mass Evil. There’s plenty more familiar acts to excite the senses on offer as well: The often obligatory Carnival Collective (an energetic 35 piece drum’n’bass samba orchestra, if you’ve never heard them), Funk and Soul from the seminal DJ Format, Los Albertos and those dapper disco mavericks Transformer. Away from the music the festival is cranking up the fun, with two 24 hour cinema tents, a superb kids’ area, an army of walkabout performers, outdoor circus, games arena, local traders and healing area. In addition to the entertainment on the five main stages, there are a number of individually curated ‘mini performance’ areas, which will be providing some of the hidden treasures that make a festival of this nature so compelling. Of course the programmed entertainment is only a small part of it all. The real stars of the show are the festival goers themselves. Playgroups organise fancy dress ideas for their visitors, encouraging them to dress in one of eight different characters. This year’s overall theme is lost toy tribes, and any willing participants will find themselves accessing a whole extra dimension to the festival, with additional entertainment laid on for each of the different toy tribes for the weekend, including theme-related puzzles, portraits, happy hours, tournaments, treasure hunts and more. It’s touches like this that make Playgroup one of the most unique and special festivals in the country, if not the world. All right on our doorstep. By Stuart Rolt

Brighton Japan Festival 2012 Images by David Smith
Moshi Moshi bought a celebration of all things Japanese to the town last month, with its hugely popular Brighton Japan Festival. Bringing together Brighton’s cafés, shops and venues, in what has become the largest annual Japanese cultural festival in the UK, the event presented a heady mix of traditional and modern Japanese art and culture to an enthusiastic Brighton crowd. Bookending the week long celebrations were two colourful fairs right outside Moshi Moshi’s restaurant in Bartholomew Square, where thousands of revellers soaked up some intermittent sunshine and the sights and sounds of the mystic East. Japan’s most artistically empowering export: karaoke, was in full effect over the weekend thanks to Lucky Voice, who were also serving up some delightful cocktails to keep us in high spirits, whilst we got down to the cheerily bright J-Pop sounds. On a more traditional front we heard some beautiful violin music from Brighton’s Suzuki Group and Stanford University’s incredible thunderous Taiko drummers.
For those that looking to be inspired by something a little more physical, there was martial arts demonstrations and workshops, giant calligraphy and scores of opportunities to try your hand at age old arts and crafts. An expanse of “shitamachi” style stalls, which sold everything from traditional garb and gifts to fantastic street food, gave us all the opportunity to take something Japanese away with us, Adding to the stalls and demonstrations, many attendees got into the swing of things by dressing in an endless array of traditional and cutting-edge Japanese outfits. The square was liberally peppered with obscure Anime characters, samurai and geisha, all adding extra colour to a vibrant atmosphere. It’s encouraging that every festival held there’s a growing army of Cosplay and Lolita enthusiasts in attendance, showing just how much these curious elements of Japanese pop culture, just like the islands’ more familiar exports, are gaining popularity in the UK.

Big beach bootique 5 Fatboy Slim Interview
The house that norm built... BHAFC’s Goldstone ground was sold in 1997 and the club were subsequently evicted, which led to the team having to play some 70 miles away at Gillingham’s Priestfield Stadium, their form dropped and it seemed leasable that this could be the end. Norman used his high-profile to raise awareness of the team he loved, accompanying petitions supporting the new stadium to Downing Street, buying into the team and encouraging his Record Company to sponsor the teams’ kit for a few years (the irony of Skint Records having their name on the kit of a team in such dire straits wasn’t lost on anyone). This was more than just a dance event, this was celebrating the survival of a club that had spent 12 years without a home, whose financial situation had them staring into the abyss. Moving back to Brighton’s Withdean Stadium, despite a severe lack of facilities, provided a welcome return to Brighton for the seagulls. The Amex would was expanded to 27,500 seats with a new tier constructed in the East Stand during the summer break with plans to expand to 30,000 capacity by the start of the 2013-14 season It’s been an astonishing ten years since THAT Beach appearance, but Mr Cook’s position on dance has become no less important or vital. The man is still capable of pulling a good sized crowd. It remains to be seen if he’s able to produce a large scale outdoor event ever again. But the stadium works extremely well as a music venue and there should be no reason to stop future events being held here. When most blokes his age are storing left-over screws or accompanying the smallest of movements with a sound effect, the evergreen Mr Cook demonstrates why he’s still, after all these years, most capable of rocking a crowd.

Our rather excited and eager reporter went behind the scenes to grab a few precious minutes with Fatboy Slim during day two of his momentous gig. Here’s what he had to say. We can’t wait to see the awesome line-up and stage show tonight. Being the fifth and second largest beach boutique is it emotional playing to your home crowd again? Absolutely! Really emotional. This is my hometown and I love this city. Everyone seems quite proud of me, just look at the previous Beach Boutiques and see what we’ve achieved. This time though I find myself in this amazing stadium. I have been involved in Brighton and Hove Albion Football for quite some time now and it’s been a rollercoaster struggle to have a home stadium of our own. We marched and we petitioned to get the planning permission and raise the funds, which I’ve been involved with from the start. So I am so proud that this building even exists. I wasn’t going to let anybody else do the opening show apart from me, no it wasn’t going to happen. Now we have something to really celebrate with the opening of the stadium. I could have easily cried on stage last night on my opening set. The Stadium is an excellent idea, but do you not miss playing to thousands along Brighton beach? I miss the vibe and being able to see the sea but playing on Brighton Beach involves such a nightmare of clearing roads, trying to build a stage in 12 hours and not being able to build things because they are against wind regulations. Here we have the opportunity to build exactly what I wanted with nothing to moan about. Transport, parking, toilets and bars, all the things that you don’t have on the beach. Yeah... plus it has its own unique vibe.
the Beatles and then there was punk rock, rap and finally house music. I personally think that the music I produce is bits and pieces of all of these genres. You always unconsciously pick things up but things like Dub Step kind of go over my head. So what are your views on such genres as Dub Step? Everything that makes the kids these days dance is brilliant but I grew up as a Punk Rocker and we are programmed the same as them, but just with a different soundtrack to it. But as a man in his mid-forties some of it does do not resonate. Chuckles. Like Dub Step, I just don’t know how to dance to it. I just can’t make dance music if I don’t know how to dance to it. Well I don’t really like the commercial dance music in the charts today; it just doesn’t turn me on. See I am looking for something more underground. What do you think of Jaguar Skills? Well he is great; he takes it to a more extreme degree than me but you will find there are little references to things pepping round my set. Lastly, what is your message to up and coming DJ’s of today? Well firstly, it’s the best job in the world! Secondly, don’t spend too long in your bedroom practicing, get out there and play for people because that is where you really learn your DJing skills. Anyone can get a machine to learn how to mix, but you have to play at venues where people dance. I played at a wedding and I played at a funeral once. Oh really? How did that go? Well it was alright, it was quite edgy because I had to make sure there were no references to death or... you know. But yeah, get out there, learn about communicating with crowds and making them dance and smile because that’s your job. It is not to wank off on how much or how many knobs you got.
Have recent trends in the UK music scene, with regards to Dub Step and Drum & Bass affected your music production?
We thanked Norman for his time and quickly darted off to see the start of a truly amazing performance
Obviously everything you produce musically is inspired from bits of music you used to listen to in the past. I grew up with

There’s a good chance to catch one of radio theatres greatest ensembles, as The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Radio Show... Live! comes to the Theatre Royal on Thu 12th - Sat 14th. This, the most loved of all Douglas Adams assorted incongruous creations, follows an ordinary but hapless man as he travels the universe under the pretence of looking for meaning to it all. Also at the Theatre Royal, on Mon 23rd - Sat 28th, is Volcano. Sadly not an extravagant musical theatre adaptation of the Tommy Lee Jones disaster movie, but the first major production of a lesser known gem from Noel Coward. Never performed during the author’s lifetime, this is a ringside view of the glamorous and scandalous Caribbean lifestyle that Coward immersed himself in. The wonderful Jenny Seagrove plays a widow inadvertently being seduced by a suave married man. Cue a furious wife turning up, accompanied by a fiery eruption of a different kind.

Zoe LYons Interview by Beki Turner Zoe Lyons has been impressing audiences from Brighton to way beyond for the last decade. No stranger to being on the telly, radio, and various stages across the planet, Brighton’s coolest comedy cat is hosting her monthly night ‘Bent Double’ again from July 1st.
What can we expect from your night ‘Bent Double’ at Komedia? Zoe’s stand-up is sharper and bitier than a wildcat’s mandible, with a personality that’s more loveable than a basket of kittens, and she was kind enough to answer every question that BN1 Magazine fired at her! Did you always plan to have a comedic career? There was no plan as such but I always harboured a deep desire to give it a go. Career is a word that doesn’t fit easy with comedy because so much of it is unplanned and down to chance. Sometimes I can’t quite believe that I have actually managed to make this work for nearly ten years now! Doing what you enjoy for a living really is a pleasure. What’s your most memorable stand-up moment? Oh there have been a few over the years, both good and .....well not so good. You never forget the first time you got booed off as a comedian. It has only happened to me once, it was at a festival years ago. I felt emotionally scarred for weeks. Sometimes you get booked to do gigs that in hindsight you should never have said yes to. I once did a corporate gig in a builders yard at 8.30 in the morning to a group of burly plumbers. It went exactly how you would imagine, pretty bad. I have had some fabulous experiences, I did a tour of mining towns in Western Australia-so much fun. Who are your comedy heroes? Most of my comedy heroes are American stand ups. At the moment I really enjoy listening to the brilliance of Louis CK. I never tire of listening to the surreal one liners of Steven Wright and Dylan Moran’s nihilistic approach to life I find strangely comforting.
Bent Double is always so much fun to do, the audience really make it a great evening. We have a pretty loyal following who bring great energy. I try and put together interesting bills and although the night is aimed more towards a gay audience I hope everyone would enjoy the night. What else are you currently up to in the world of comedy? I gig all over the country so there is a lot of travelling most weeks and I am putting together a new show to tour next year as well. I do little bits and bobs of telly every now again. I just filmed an episode of a new show with Jack Dee and I am doing Mock The Week again soon. I like doing telly, you get nice sandwiches! What do you think you’d be doing if you weren’t making people laugh for a living? I have no idea, I think I would like to work outside in some capacity. I quite like the idea of being a Forest Ranger. What do you like about living in Brighton? Everything. I love Brighton. Although I wasn’t born here it really is home. I would miss the sea if I had to move away. I never get tired of looking at the sea and its many changing colours and shapes. I just did a weekend sailing course and I can’t wait to get a bit more sailing experience so I can wave to my favourite town from a wee swinging dingy.” Hello Brighton, love ya! “

Brighton Fashion week
The jubilee, Euro 2012, the Olympics. There are many noteworthy events this Spring, but not least should be this years Brighton Fashion Week which ran from the 30th May to the 3rd June, in its third year of being a full weeklong extravaganza. Known for consistently pushing the envelope in fashion and style, Brighton was invaded by droves of fashionistas who couldn’t wait to see what delights this year’s event had in store. The week kicked off with the much anticipated Brighton Frocks catwalk show and took place at the All Saints Church in Hove (a stunning listed building, high-ceilings and all) complete with a stonking great runway right down the middle. The atmosphere was buzzing as the fabulous and fearless endeavoured to get a seat as close to the runway as possible (and nab one of the coveted VIP goody bags) and took their chances in the
queue for the bar - which, as it turns out is an incredibly opportune place to check out what everyone else is wearing! In true Frocks style, the show was incredibly theatrical and each collection was paired with a fitting music track and a screen at the back showed video or graphics throughout. As I go fairly classic with my sartorial choices, I had steeled myself for the wild, wacky and just plain mad, but I was still caught out when Celia Arias sent her collection out to open the show. A variety of outrageous characters such as evil puppets on stilts made their way out dressed in colourful costumes and to finish, a sombre cyber creature beckoned his shy monster friend out before cautiously shuffling down together (far left image). Not exactly a wearable collection thank you, but fascinating to watch all the same.
Lucky Dame came next with its retro-inspired collection of latex underwear. (pictured above) Very sexy and feminine but again, not that wearable. Though from my privileged position on the front row, I was able to see how well made the pieces were – perfectly seamless and frankly great if you don’t want a VPL! Other highlights were some glamorous punks at Charles of London in some covetable biker jackets and printed swimwear and some fullskirted fifties fabulousness at Oh My Honey (second picture from the right). I almost wish I was sixteen again so I could wear one of her flirty creations to prom. The designer I most admired was Dumpster Couture who takes the ‘one man’s trash...’ philosophy to meld a
femme fatale vibe with soft femininity to create dresses that really flatter the female form. One particular dress was
comprised of Waitrose leaflets and managed to look like something you’d wear which was quite a coup. I was also impressed by the hair styling that matched the collections, from fifties chignons to slicked back punk hair. The hair was taken care of by Creative Director at Electric Hairdressing London, Mark Wooley, and his styling team. I caught Claire Finn, one of his hairdressers from the Brighton branch of Electric, rushing around in the interval and I asked her what she thought of being part of the team. She said: ‘It was an amazing opportunity to be part of the Electric Art Team for Brighton Fashion Week and being the sole team responsible for the hair styling. It was fantastic to work alongside the creative designers and to be able to add to my own skill set in fashion hairdressing’

Other than being quite disturbed by the hairy, balaclava’d men at Jylle Navaro who crawled on their knees and leered at the audience, the whole show was incredibly fun and I was left satisfied that I’d seen something quite rare in the audaciousness of alternative fashion that is so at home in Brighton. My appetite was well and truly whetted for the Zeitgeist show on Thursday 31st, again at All Saints church. The Zeitgeist is the couture runway show and is the cornerstone of BFW, showcasing some fresh new talent as well as more established designers. The show was quite flawless in its production and an atmosphere of sophistication and luxury was set with an operatic performance from Pippa, a Britain’s got Talent finalist.
The headline act and by far the highlight of the week, let alone the night, was Jess Eaton’s Road Kill Couture collection which closed the show. I have to admit that when I first heard of her line, I conjured up images of Lady Gaga in her raw slabs of meat dress at the MTV awards. But what emerged onto the runway could not have been further from the truth. Eaton uses natural materials such as road kill (feathers, fur, animal hides) to create her line which is mostly made up of accessories. Eaton split her line into mini collections, complete with theme music to showcase the range at its best but the most dazzling pieces were the headpieces (pictured far right) made from feathers and bird wings. Each one was utterly breathtaking and Eaton quite rightly received a standing ovation during the final walk-through. Another collection which
caught my attention was Lesley de Freitas’ FLORA range. With a mix of beautiful colours and fabrics, De Freitas draped and used cut-out to design a fabulous range of dresses and separates that would have been at home in any A-lister wardrobe. For me, she is definitely the one to watch. Overall, the evening was a triumph for the BFW team. I always admire BFW for opening its model casting call open to the public so that budding models or stylists can get their foot in the door of a tough industry, providing them with invaluable experience and even an opportunity to get scouted by an agency. I had the pleasure of chatting to Antonia Pitcairn McKenzie, a student, who modelled for Oh My Honey at Brighton Frocks. She said: “I was quite honoured that I was picked to walk for Oh My Honey and that they’d picked
me amongst all the other professional models. I have to sing Louise Mahoney’s praises for creating such beautiful fifties style gowns and for real sized women too! She was such a genuinely friendly and sweet person. The buzz I got from this show makes me want to come again!” Later on in the week, the fun and frolics continued at the Ready to Wear shows and finally with a fifties-themed closing party. It’s brilliant to see this year that BFW is now a not-to-be-missed event. I can’t wait till next year.

FILM
The Classic Horror Campaign By Wayne Imms
The Classic Horror Campaign, led by Brighton based Richard Gladman, was set up as an attempt to persuade the BBC to revive their horror double-bills, which were screened during the seventies until the early eighties. Richard and his team also arrange classic horror related events across the country. August will see their Frighten Brighton event take place at Komedia. Here, he tells us more about the campaign and his love of the genre.
from various horror movie stars and publications, and now a classic horror film festival.
WI: Tell me about your own memories and experiences of growing up with horror films.
RG: The Classic Horror Campaign runs regular monthly film screenings at The Roxy Bar & Screen in London which always includes a horror quiz and prizes, with sponsorship and support from various horror magazines. We’re currently being sponsored by Shock Horror Magazine, but have had various tie-ins over the last eighteen months. We also took the campaign up to Manchester as part of the Lass Fest fringe festival and have been asked to host some classic horror screenings in Vancouver, Canada, so the Classic Horror Campaign definitely has an international following! Frighten Brighton came about because I have lived in Brighton for years and think it is an amazing place for film fans and the more culturally aware, and yet it doesn’t have its own horror film festival! There are awesome horror film events all over the UK, from London to Manchester, Whitby, to Edinburgh and beyond… and yet nothing in my own home town; it just didn’t make sense. We first hosted a Classic Horror Campaign double bill at Komedia last August and used the Frighten Brighton tagline. It was such a big success that me and my horror partner-in-crime, Scare Sarah, decided to launch a whole host of local horror events and film screenings under the Frighten Brighton banner, culminating in the Frighten Brighton Classic Horror Film Festival at Komedia on Saturday August 11th, which is co-sponsored by Hemlock Books and Diabolique magazine.
RG: Even when I was really little, I always enjoyed the scarier side of television and the movies. I was obsessed with anything that contained monsters, ghosts and other frightening stuff starting with Jon Pertwee’s Dr Who, the more horror-centric episodes of Space:1999 and leading on to the classic BBC2 Saturday night horror double bills, which I initially watched with my mum, dad and my sister, so it was actually quite a cosy family experience. My obsession was fuelled by numerous horror movie books and magazines, especially Monster Mag and House of Hammer. WI: Of course, a key focus of your campaign is to get the BBC to bring back screenings of frightening films, ideally, I gather, late night double-bills. I too remember watching them as a child. What feedback have you had from the BBC? RG: I’ve heard nothing from them directly, although when I was interviewed for their Points of View show, some time ago, the guys that came down from Birmingham to do the filming intimated that there was a lot of interest from various producers to make more documentaries along the lines of Mark Gatiss’ A History of Horror. Much as I love and respect the BBC as an entity, I do feel that they tend to ignore the views of their more “niche” audiences and prefer to follow their own agenda, no matter what. WI: How did the Classic Horror Campaign begin, and explain your role with it? RG: It literally started when I was flicking through the hundreds of channels on TV for the umpteenth evening in a row and just became so angry that there was literally nothing of interest for me to watch. No movies more than a decade old of any genre, let alone classic horror, sci-fi and monster flicks, so in a fit of pique I started an online petition and began tweeting about it. Almost immediately, I had people contacting me and encouraging me to set up a blog, then a Facebook account and a website. It all snowballed from there into regular film screenings, endorsement
WI: You’ve organised numerous events, which have included film screenings. Tell me more about them and the Komedia based Classic Horror Double Bill event, which takes place in August.
WI: To your knowledge, does Brighton have much of a fanbase for horror? RG: As a horror fan, I wanted to touch base and network with like-minded folk, so I did a call-out on Twitter for local horror fans, writers and filmmakers and tagged it #brightonhorrorposse. We now have regular meet-ups and they all attend various local cult movie events that I organise, and the World Horror Convention held its annual in Brighton in 2010, which is a massive event. I would say that there is a very large horror fanbase down here, yes. WI: Can you name one or two of your favourite horror films, and why do they appeal to you? RG: My absolute favourite is Hammer’s Vampire Circus (1972),
which was produced during my favourite horror film (or any film) decade, the seventies. Hammer’s seventies films are still very underrated by many critics and yet are amongst their most imaginative, boundary-pushing and challenging work. Vampire Circus in particular carries a very Euro-horror aesthetic and has a dark and subversive undercurrent. which sets it apart from some of its contemporaries. Aside from that, there are just so many that I love for such different reasons. I would always recommend The Exorcist (1973) as a great example of the kind of classy, intelligent and frightening films that Hollywood used to make back in the seventies. WI: Of modern horror films, so many of them are actually what have been called “torture porn”, such as the Saw and the Hostel films, among many others. Unlike classics like Dracula and Frankenstein, these aren’t supernatural. Today, there are so many films that rely on gore and, although supernatural, the likes of Paranormal Activity seem to focus on making audiences jump out of their seats, perhaps instead of proper horror and spookiness. Do you have any thoughts on this? RG: Even though I’m known for my love and championing of “classic horror” (generally considered to be films made before 1980), I still follow the horror genre as a whole and often enjoy the gory stuff, as long as it is entertaining. When I was growing up, you couldn’t keep me away from all the blood and gore, exploitation films and so-called “video nasties” – often the viler the better. The difference now is that most of these torture porn and nasty horror franchises are being made and funded by the mainstream Hollywood system and distributed in multiplexes to teenage kids, thus taking away the very things that made the original exploitation flicks so enjoyable and relevant in the sixties, seventies and early eighties. I thought Saw was a great film because it was original and told a fascinating story, whereas the sequels were just bad films made by cynical Hollywood studios to cash-in and rip-off kids. Hostel was great because it was made with a genuine Grindhouse feel and sensibilities, but most of the follow-ups and rip-offs of these movies just leave me cold. And don’t get me started on all the lame, unimaginative horror remakes; that would be a whole interview unto itself! But not to leave on a negative note, the horror genre is still thriving with fans worldwide appreciating both the classics and the contemporary, hence the success of events like Film Four’s Frightfest and our very own Frighten Brighton. www.cyberschizoid.com www.classichorrorcampaign.com

Brighton’s own
Magic - Al Everyone remembers being young and amazed at the wizardry that magician’s conjure up, whether it was the scary children’s entertainer at a friend’s birthday party or an extravagant performance on stage. Chris Pascoe; www.aspectsphotography.net
Those were the days when mainstream magicians could be all about spectacle with the likes of David Copperfield and Pen & Teller, or could be more character driven or comedic as with Paul Daniels and Tommy Cooper. Now we have a different kind of mainstream magic, with theatrical roles and street performance from the likes of David Blain and recently Dynamo. We caught up with Brighton’s very own magic man who goes by the name of Magic Al, to see what was up his sleeve.
How long have you been performing Magic and what got you into it? I’ve been performing magic for 20 years, since I was 7 years old, but professionally for 6 or 7 years. What got me into it... well, most kids got brought some sort of trick set or magic kit when they are young, whereas most get bored of it after a week and move onto the next fad, I just continued the interest. You claim to be a Freestyle Magician. What is a freestyle magic? I’m trying to create my own niche in Magic, most magicians get categorised as either a Stage Magician, Cabaret Magician or Closeup Magician, when I say Freestyle, nothing is rehearsed, I might go up to a group of people and improvise with what I see around me, choose something they are wearing, a certain item or assess the
situation there and then. No one else calls themselves Freestyle What’s your favourite or hardest trick you’ve performed? The hardest is when I’ve set something up, it might seem random, but there’s a lot of pre planning gone into it. These are tricks where you have to wait for the right opportunity, which can take some time and needs to be just right, but I can’t say too much as I don’t want to give it away. The hardest trick to perform is the mind reading trick. A lot of the venues I play at have a lot of people drinking, so it’s sometimes hard to do a mind reading trick on someone who’s been drinking too much. Do they go wrong? I try to keep as many options open as possible. You don’t tell the person or group what the trick is so if the trick does go wrong the person is unaware and I can take it to the next level. Keeping as many twists and turns that are part of the trick but the person is oblivious too is part of the act and also brings more of the freestyle elements in. Your appearance on Britain’s Got Talent back in 2009 didn’t quite go as planned. What was that experience like? I had never thought about going on the show, it was the

researchers that contacted me, they must have spotted one of my online videos and got in touch. Because it was close-up magic I found it very hard to construct something on a stage that would work, I also got buzzed out before I could finish the trick! But I did get one ‘yes’ from Amanda. Got a lot more work off the back of it though. Are you a member of the Magic Circle? No I’m not. I’m not gonna say anything bad about them, it’s a good thing that they are promoting the art but normally when they have their meetings on I’m already booked for a show. It’s certainly not as tight and as secretive as some might perceive. There seems to be a resurgence of magician shows on TV. Dynamo, Penn & Teller etc. Do you buy into these big production or so called spontaneous tricks? I don’t blame the magicians for doing that. If the spectators believe it is real magic at the time then they have accomplished their job. The person might twig later on but at that moment the illusion is all worth it. It can ruin your reputation in the long run but that’s up to the magician Any magician you look up to? Obviously Dynamo has done amazingly well; his biggest trick is making magic popular, being very creative with his magic and bringing other genres of entertainment into it. It’s not just magic it’s street culture
and music and blending it all together. I put my hands up to him. What’s coming up or in the pipeline for Magic Al? There’s a TV pilot I’m working on at the moment. I can’t say much but it is something new, different and exciting, something that hasn’t been done in TV magic shows before. Unexpected magic put it that way. Magic Al has been gaining growing success and now has the likes of Ambrose Harcourt PR booking shows left, right and centre. Visit www.magicalbrighton.com to see where you can find him next or book for an event.

ECO CORNER Last week’s inaugural Eco Technology Show at the Amex Community Stadium in Brighton proved a huge success, with many of the 100 exhibitors and 4000 visitors vowing to return in 2013 (date to be announced soon). It was the south east’s first show to focus on sustainable products and services for the home and business and took place on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th June.
Highlights over the two days included the transport zone which showcased a huge range of the latest electric cars (worth over £1 million) including the emission free Lightning Car and ultra-slick Tesla Electric sports-car. The latest electric and solar powered bikes were also on show and were tested by the many visitors. Visitors picked up practical sustainable living tips and business advice from the free seminars taking place on the exhibition floor. They learnt how to lower their carbon emissions, reduce waste and live a more sustainable existence in the home and workplace. New products were also launched at the show including the grow your own oyster mushroom pack from the Expresso Mushroom Company, which recycles disused coffee granules from coffee shops and uses them as a breeding ground for the mushrooms.
Smart Business Conference Running alongside the show was the new trade event, The Smart Business Conference, which investigated sustainable growth opportunities for the private and
public sectors. A lively debate looking at if we can have growth in a resource constrained world took place on the morning with MPs from all lead parties: Caroline Lucas MP (Green), Greg Barker MP (Conservative) and Minister of State for Energy and Climate Change and Minister for Energy and Climate Change and Norman Baker MP (Lib Dems). Caroline Lucas kicked off by saying: “… if everything is growing, well, we’re on a planet of finite resources, so we can’t go on growing all times in all sectors. We need to reduce our consumption to allow developing companies to develop. We need less stuff, but more efficiently produced. Just having more and more stuff, even if it’s efficient, is no good.” The Government’s Green Deal was also debated and Greg Barker emphasized the important role of SMEs being the real engines for growth. He later presented details of the Green Deal in a seminar on the main exhibition floor. The conference was closed on the Friday by the new Brighton and Hove mayor Bill Randall. The full conference programme can be viewed online at www.smartbusinessconference.co.uk
Vehicle Technology says: “We’ve had a great time at the Eco Technology Show an amazing first event here in Brighton. The best thing has been the real mixture of visitors who are interested in our products for motorcycles, we’ve been consistently busy talking to local businesses and the public. We’re also delighted with the amount of press that have turned up and shown an interest in Weald Electric Vehicle Technology. We’d definitely like to return next year!” Alex Georgiou, founder and director at Espresso Mushroom Company said: “The Eco Tech Show was a perfect occasion for Espresso Mushroom Company to launch our Kitchen Garden, an innovative product that allows people to grow their own oyster mushrooms on used coffee grounds. As a Brighton based microbusiness we are grateful to the organisers for their support, allowing us to showcase our product alongside the nation’s leading green enterprises”
Exhibitor success
James Clarke director at Pulse Eco Showers said: “We’ve had a brilliant show. We’ve signed three new distributors already and sold far more stock than we expected too. A very busy stand and great new contacts - we’re really pleased with the result and hope to return again.”
Alex Hunt, director at The Green Building Partnership said: “This has been a great show with a good range of people looking for better environmental and sustainable approaches to improving their home. We’ve enjoyed the Eco Technology Show and are looking forward to returning next year.”
Michael Yeoman, managing director at South Downs Solar said: “I thought the show started well with great attendance on the first day, lots of interest on the solar side and generally a good mix of businesses showcasing the latest in green technology. The show has gone really well for South Downs Solar.”

I think Ruth, The Latest Musicbars S&M enforcer has forgiven me now for leaving my furniture lying about and, while on that subject, my lawyers have asked me to mention that Emma, another Latest Music Bar office person, did not go to Thailand to become a prostitute, it was simply a holiday (simple and understandable mistake on my part, surely!).
Emma can now also be found at weekends hosting the Old Bank Bar in Kemp Town, which I shall visit, purely in the name of research, you understand. If truth be known, I’ve not, dear reader, been spending so much time at the Bar but have been spending more time up at my other unofficial (uninvited) office up at Yellowfish Studio, near Lewes. Largely because Ross, the owner, has made the mistake of installing a sofa in his office so I just hang about there all day lounging on said sofa. I get away with it on the basis that Ross seems to be under the misapprehension that I do his PR... whatever PR is. Actually the days often end up with Ross and I discussing our latest nonsensical money making schemes.... ‘magicians!!!... is there any money in that?’, is but one pathetic example ....where we both do a rather too realistic impression of the useless agent in ‘Extras’ while the other Yellow Fish staff get on with the proper business of running a hugely successful studio business. Reality is Yellowfish, fresh from sending the mobile airstream to Ireland to record Chris De Burgh’s new album, arranged a private fund raising auction which raised over £5k and rising to kick start their foundation, and a fine night was had by all. So somebody there must be doing something right. We just need to work out who it is.
Talking of dead end losers, I’ve started working with Mir Cooke. Mir (pronounced Mia) is a former international model - we’re talking New York, Milan, Paris, etc. here - not a couple of swimsuit shots in Ideal Home like most ‘models’ I’ve known - who just happened to pick up a couple of first class degrees in training to be an Archaeobotanist and Zooarchaeologist (like you do!). Oh, in between TV presenting on BBC, Channel 4, Five, National Geographic, Discovery etc... and all the film and TV acting, of course. And did I mention she just published the first in a series of books (Drusilla Blood - Miriam Cooke, available now from amazon). No? Oh well...easy to forget. Mir is actually a singer-songwriter with a classic English folk voice who, somehow, has found it hard to fit in too much music career stuff on the account that she’s obviously a bit lazy and can’t be bothered to do anything to any kind of standard. Not. Why this extraordinary woman is living in Brighton - our celebrated graveyard of ambition - is a mystery to man and beast. Police are investigating this strange phenomenon. OK I’m off for a lie down. The big words in Mir’s CV have worn me out. Ross, the couch!... and nurse, the screens. Till next time...keep it steady and see you around town
