WORKING WITH BN1 MAGAZINE
It’s June, which means whilst there might be some great weather the solstice is fast approaching. From then on the nights will start drawing in and soon we’ll be befouled by another season of X-Factor. Named after Absolutely Fabulous actress June Whitfield, the month sees summer madness set in everywhere. Festivals are springing up across the country and hectares of spam-like flesh will be exposed for all to see. The solstice itself sees several celebrations, not least the ancient ceremonial face-off between the boy-racers of Wiltshire and the druids at Stonehenge. There’s a small town in Latvia where the longest day is marked by its citizens running naked through the streets at 3am. In Sweden, where they get only 284 seconds of sunlight on any given day, midsummer is possibly one of the most important events of the year. In fact, the whole of Europe seems to go crazy for building bonfires, throwing flowers into rivers and watching millionaires kick a ball this month. So what is Brighton & Hove up to? Well, you’ll just have to read on to find out…

party atmosphere, and coming to Brighton gives us just that. TOM JONES SUN 17 JULY SUSSEX COUNTY CRICKET WWW.TOMJONES.COM From The Valleys to the lounges of Las Vegas, the legendary Sir Tom Jones will finally make his way to Hove this summer. Having sold more than 100 million records, Sir Tom has been an unwavering feature of British cultural life for the past 50 years. Songs such as It’s Not Unusual, Kiss, Delilah and What’s New Pussycat - not to mention Sex Bomb - have become classics in their own right, as Jones’ remarkable repertoire has earned him a place as one of the UK’s best loved artists. A three-year stint as a coach on hit TV show The Voice further cemented Sir Tom’s position as a cultural icon and served as a reminder to younger generations of his illustrious career. The Welsh wonder’s music spans pop, rock, soul, R&B, dance, country and gospel and will be brought to life in a show that promises to span all five decades of his career. The County Ground concert on Sun 17 July forms part of a major 2016 UK tour, following on from Sir Tom’s recent release of the autobiography Over the Top and Back. Alongside the back catalogue, Jones also plans to share his new album Long Lost Suitcase - a compilation of songs and musical inspiration collected by him over years and stored in a suitcase - with concert audiences everywhere. Fans can expect an exciting, moving and dynamic stage performance delivered with a powerful, nuanced voice that can still move mountains, even after 53 years in the business. From tight trousers to expansive chest hair, Sir Tom has repeatedly proven that he’s up for anything, even now as the elder statesman of British music. Despite a difficult year so far - his wife Linda passed away in April - Sir Tom exudes the energy of artists half his age. In the wake
of this tragedy, Jones confirmed that the summer tour would still go ahead, as he has come to the conclusion “that singing really is my best therapy.” Of the Hove concert, Sir Tom says, “it is brilliant to have such a great venue on the tour line-up and with it being the first time I have performed in Hove I am really looking forward to welcoming all my fans there.” He added, “I love performing the music I love and sharing what has for me been an incredible journey through the decades. I’m sure it’ll be a great night for everyone!” There are certainly few artists capable of continuously captivating audiences as Sir Tom has over the years. Huurrghh! Think you better dance now…

The popular small hatchback celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, and its birthday will be the central theme of the event, which promises to be a car show like no other. bondax JUST THEM AND THE MUSIC By Kathleen Johnston
Electronic duo Bondax - otherwise known as Adam Kaye and George Townsend - are every bit the modern day success story. Now in their early twenties, the two boys met at school in Lancaster and began collaborating as teenagers. Then they would “Skype all night and just send files back and forth”, yet fast forward several years and Bondax are at the forefront of the electronica scene, playing all over the world from LA to Korea and Romania to Australia. Bondax’s smooth, ambient and relatively low-tempo brand of electronica is informed by a number of different musical styles. During the course of a long, laughter-filled conversation, the boys tell me how “when we were 14/15 we got into French house… then we got more into the UK stuff like Jamie xx… [and now] we’ve got into old jazz and soul records.” Their unique vibe defies categorization; Dazed magazine calling it “the aural equivalent of sipping an icecold Pimm’s on the balcony of your council estate flat”. If their 5.61 million followers on Soundcloud are anything to go by, the lads are doing something right. As Kaye put it, “genres are just something we created so that we can find it easier. Language doesn’t always directly represent the things [it describes]. The actual thing itself [that matters] is the feeling”. The feeling Bondax are keen to inspire is, above all, happiness. Townsend explains how “a lot of underground dance music at the moment is very heavy and I think that disillusions certain people… We don’t want to affect house music so that making something happy is a negative thing. That has been a bit of a frustration for us”. Given Bondax’s chirpier sound, they’ve had to learn “about how to structure a night properly if you want it to be coherent.” Playing globally has also given the duo a chance to analyse the different ways their music is received. They recall a recent occasion when “the tune of the set” at a Nottingham gig had “thousands of people going off”. Then, when they played the same track in France “no one gave a shit”. However, they also “played some tunes in France that were really funky that wouldn’t
have gone down well in Nottingham, so it’s funny how it changes culturally.” Similarly, when on the topic of Bondax’s upcoming American tour Kaye tells me, “our fanbase in England is so massively student-based it’s quite nice in America… Although it’s not dissimilar sometimes you’ll look into the crowd and see someone who’s over 30 or 40 absolutely loving it, because they’ve obviously loved the original waves of house music and have picked up on some mixes we’ve done and enjoy our stuff. That would just never happen in England”. Bondax have played in the States on and off for the last four years. “The way we’re approaching America is if they like it, they like it,” Townsend says, but it hasn’t always been this simple. The boys had to navigate the industry from a very young age. They were signed at seventeen, “at the time we had no understanding,” they say. “It’s very foreign when you’re that age.” Faced with the realities of the business, it seems that the boys felt like fish out of water. Townsend recalls thinking, “we’re from around Manchester, we have no idea, we just want to make music. Being taken into some fancy accountant on Bond Street just like ‘what!? I don’t even understand what an accountant is!’” Whilst on this topic, Kaye and Townsend share with me “a funny little anecdote” about their past naivety. “When we were going to sign our first ever deal the only person we thought we could refer to was our music tech teacher.” They all “went through it together,” and the teacher said it all looked perfectly fine. Then, “a year later, our new manager comes up to us and is like ‘this is the worst contract I’ve ever seen’”. Luckily for Bondax, it wasn’t deemed binding. Beyond business, the duo has also had to adjust to the madness that comes along with success. They’ve have now established a base in Manchester, but have spent the majority of the last four years touring and DJing. “It’s been difficult, early on in our lives, not even musically, to deal with that” Townsend contemplates.
“Because we’d only made a few tracks before we got signed so it’s been very quick moving from a very ordinary life to one in which you don’t even really have any time even to think about what you’re doing… It’s very difficult to capture an emotion when everything’s been on such a high constantly for years at a time. So it’s good for us now …we’ve got a bit of time to think about what we’re making and why we’re making it”. Bondax’s reasoning, that “in the end, we only do this because we enjoy it and we like the music,” seems very sensible. Despite all they’ve accomplished, Kaye and Townsend are very level-headed. Kaye describes how “sometimes we get a bit disillusioned… when we meet people or witness other DJs literally just doing it for the girls or the money.” For these guys, this kind of attitude “does properly ruin music”. Kaye and Townsend are still working on the debut album, but for now they’re looking forward to a relatively quiet summer, playing festivals at home and abroad. One festival Bondax are particularly looking forward to is Boundary Brighton, not least because it falls on Townsend’s birthday. The boys hope to catch Jungle’s DJ set whilst there and plan on celebrating with their good friends Snake Hips. As we chat about the festivities, Kaye sums it up nicely when he reasons that “not to be too ignorant, but we don’t always see the lineups… It says something that we already have a good idea of what’s going on there”. We finish off joking about the difficulties of mastering the music industry, which the boys liken to the 2015 movie Kill Your Friends. Wary of certain elements in the industry, they label the music business as “really, a bit bullshit”. Displaying both the weariness of industry veterans and the mischievousness of youth, Bondax have grown from a pair of wide-eyed teens into wise souls. Bondax play at Boundary Brighton, Stanmer Park on Sat 17 Sept. www.boundarybrighton.com www.bondax.co.uk

THE STAIRS SAT 4 JUNE CONCORDE 2 WWW.CONCORDE2.CO.UK After 20 years of hibernation, The Stairs are feeling refreshed and ready to unleash their exciting hybrid of cosmic psychedelia once more. A one-off show in their hometown of Liverpool last year showed how much fans had missed their raucous bluesy 60s West Coast garage sounds. So now a small 2016 UK tour enables us once again to delight in hearing favourites from their classic cult album Mexican R’n’B as well as new material, and hopefully unexpected rarities. With just one album and a handful of cultish EPs released, they sensationally split in 1994. Now the reunion is on fire, with new material being rumoured. Even though her family essentially wrote the blueprint for modern country music, she still has enough impact and energy to build her own distinctiveness. In the 70s she blended the music of her heritage with punk and new-wave. Now she’s developed an undisputable maturity to her voice, backed up with lovely, simple arrangements. Of course her family’s back catalogue is revisited and reinterpreted, but the past never overshadows her own greatness.

If Ron Jeremy and Justin Timberlake had a secret love child, this is what he would be like. Initially catapulted to international fame with his wonderful 2002 album You Can Feel Me, the crown prince of misguided sexual belligerence is back. Only now he’s more soulful, more controlled and no longer break dancing in a barely-there he-string. But don’t worry ladies; he’s still bursting with charisma and lusty confidence. With an amazing voice tightly backed by funky drum-loops and pumping brass, he’s unafraid to be vulnerable or daft in his songs. He might be an unlikely player, but his swagger and blatant selfawareness will undoubtedly win you over. If you appreciate the ridiculous nature of R&B, and want to see it turned up to the max by a very talented sex-bomb, then Mr Superstar is your man.
Best known for her smash hits Young Hearts Run Free and You Got The Love, Candi Staton is celebrating 40 years since the former’s release with a very special tour. Even though she’s 76 years old, this soul queen is still capable of banging out a booty-shaking spectacular of a show. Whilst much of her legendary back-catalogue will be getting faithful renditions, expect a few reworkings and reappraisals of the hits. You don’t get to a level like hers by keeping it simple, after all. With a voice existing halfway between headlong euphoria and earthshattering anguish, this is the sound of raw R&B emotion.
BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE WEDS 22 - THURS 23 JUNE CONCORDE 2 WWW.CONCORDE2.CO.UK More than capable of putting out a couple of releases a year, Anton Newcombe’s Californian psych-rock standard-bearers are showing few signs of slowing down. The sextet pack in chiming guitars, playful 60s references and create soundtracks for imaginary films from European cinema’s golden age. As you expect, for a band named after a famous South American mass suicide, these guys operate at the fringes of populism. Yet they remain as one of the most inventive, crucial and exciting rock bands around. With over 20 years of backcatalogue to draw from and the promise of drama ever looming, this will be one of the shows of the summer.
SAUL WILLIAMS WEDS 22 JUNE THE HAUNT WWW.THEHAUNTBRIGHTON.CO.UK He might be an accomplished actor (appearing in the Tupac Shakur jukebox musical Holler If Ya Hear Me), poet, activist and writer, but Williams’ primary profession is rap music. He’s capable of creating work which ignites a response and all are exposed to it, perfectly demonstrated by his fifth album Martyr Loser King. After 15 years since the release of his Rick Rubin co-produced debut, he’s been raised into the attentions of a wider audience. The anger towards corporations and abusers of power persists at the heart of his work, as does the beautiful way he finely blends poetry with alternative hip-hop. Weaving lyrics with abundant selfconsciousness, he goes so much further than supplying vacuous party tunes.

Last year’s second full-length effort, Bones, embraces influences like Jack White, The Black Keys, My Morning Jacket, Band of Horses and Led Zeppelin, offering a sound unlike anything they have created before. They’re still rooted firmly in rock ‘n’ roll’s building blocks - country, R&B, soul and gospel, building upon the energy of each to riotous effect. Intense vocals offers and varied instrumentation produce a range of different harmonics. Accented rhythms and spiky guitar-work build over rich bass lines, making their sound distinct and agreeable. ORCHESTRA OF SPHERES SAT 25 JUNE GREEN DOOR STORE WWW.THEGREENDOORSTORE.CO.UK Brightly coloured, off-the-wall and raucous, it’s as much about the performance as the music with this crew. Offering up some precise percussion, wandering keyboards, fuzzed out bass guitars and enough wah-wah to fill a stadium, they’re a spinning, confrontational, psychedelic circus. With some frank evasion of the rock rulebook, employing a number of bizarre homemade instruments like biscuit tin guitars and composing increasingly odd song-titles, it’s not easy to pigeonhole them. I dare you to try. Taking in a myriad of sounds, Orchestra Of Spheres mix Balinese gamelan, world music, folk, funk and disco in a near-endless experiment. Improvising, stealing and improving, these wild-eyed antipodeans start a party wherever they go.

The current incarnation of these acid-jazz legends are still making incredible music, effortlessly transferring the genius of leader Jean-Paul ‘Bluey’ Maunick’s artistic vision from studio to stage. Incognito remain the best of British soul, with their music which remains fresh, funky and accessible.

my nu leng
IT’S ALL PART OF THE MASTERPLAN By Kathleen Johnston
My Nu Leng’s bass-heavy sound may be notoriously hard to categorise, but it literally encapsulates UK rave culture. If you’ve ever been to a sweaty, packed out night that celebrates bass culture, listen to one of their tracks and you’ll be returned there in an instant. Their dark dance music has a gritty vibe; synths and rumbling lower frequencies feature heavily. This is not a sound for the fainthearted.
we have been trying hard to support up and coming producers as much as we can.” Tommy and Jammo also want to scope out new territories with My Nu Leng’s own productions, detailing how this year “we are looking forward to releasing some drum and bass and different styles… Going forward we really want to push the boundaries of what people are used to, always striving to make something completely original and new.”
Drawing from drum and bass, garage, house, dubstep, jungle, techno and grime, the Bristol duo have taken the underground music scene by storm. Jammo and Tommy’s remixes are a now key fixture in any dance set, and they’ve been credited with pushing the boundaries of dance music to new heights.
My Nu Leng are certainly accustomed to pushing the boundaries of what people are used to, as theirs is a sound that has always been resistant to labelling. The guys bemoan the tendency “to label everything as though it’s in an iTunes library” which they ultimately see as an unproductive approach towards music. “We have always wanted to keep ourselves from being pigeonholed into a specific genre, but never intentionally wrote music to sound a certain way,” Jammo clarifies. My Nu Leng “always try different things in the studio,” and explain, “over the years our sound has developed and changed in BPM.”
The guys met in High Wycombe but later moved to Bristol and became ensconced in the local music scene. “The Bristol scene is just an amazing thing to be part of, only contended communitywise by possibly Manchester,” they say. “The term ‘community’ describes [Bristol] perfectly… It’s not like somewhere like London where everyone seems to be pitted against each other, but rather everyone pushes each other and supports as much as they can.” Evidently, Tommy and Jammo thrive off being a part of a larger musical community. A particular career highlight for them has been the ‘My Nu Leng & M8s’ shows earlier this year. Although an America tour is often considered as the Holy Grail of musical success, My Nu Leng didn’t seem overly enamoured when we chatted about their recent stint across the pond. Whilst they were keen to emphasise it was, in part, a great experience they were also disappointed to have played many of the shows separately. The guys explain how after six or seven years of collaboration, they feel at their best when working together. Whilst on the subject of America, we talk about the surge of interest in British music over there. “The UK has been at the forefront of dance music for such a long time, championing new styles like dubstep, garage, grime” they remind me. When fondly recalling the tape-sharing culture of their youths, the conversation turns once again back to community. My Nu Leng believe the very size of our tiny island has enabled underground music culture to thrive. The uniquely British underground phenomenon holds such appeal for America, Tommy and Jammo reason, because the sheer size of the USA makes having an equivalent scene impossible. My Nu Leng are clearly very proud of our homegrown sounds, telling me “the UK underground scene is amazing right now and
“We are trying to be more experimental, trying a range of musical styles, and hopefully at some point in the next few years build up to an album,” say the guys. They assure me, “this year is going to be pretty hectic! We are playing so much over the summer,” with one of their biggest upcoming gigs being at Brighton’s very own Wild Life Festival. My Nu Leng have released music through the ever expanding label Black Butter and are good friends with fellow members of the BB family and Wild Life organisers Rudimental. They played at Wild Life last year, but as part of a back-to-back set with Oneman, so are looking forward to doing their own show this time around. As long-standing fans of the newly reformed group, both Tommy and Jammo also express great excitement at the fact The Avalanches have joined the line-up. Beyond the summer, My Nu Leng do have “a couple of projects lined up”. Until then, though, “we will be taking our sound to as many places as possible, trying to make our DJ sets as fun as possible, and enjoy the fact we are able to do what we do!” For the guys whose job it is keep the party going, this sounds like a pretty good plan. My Nu Leng play at Wild Life Festival, when it comes to Brighton City Airport on Sat 11 – Sun 12 June. www.wildlifefestival.com

Faze MIyake LATHER, RINSE AND REPEAT By Kathleen Johnston Faze Miyake’s career trajectory has been mirrored in the larger successes of grime music. With a predilection for experimentation and a disregard for generic boundaries, the 26-year-old’s versatile approach to beat making is taking the UK music scene by storm. First breaking out in 2011 with his grime instrumental hit Take Off, Miyake is now one of the most well known producers of his kind, with a Rinse FM residency and a self titled debut album already under his belt. It’s all about what he calls our “home grown music”. His sound may have been influenced by US hip-hop and trap, but Miyake is recognised as a key player in the grime scene. Arguably the most exciting contemporary genre in Britain, it has seen an explosion in popularity, from the success of artists such as Stormzy to the surge of North American interest in the likes of Skepta. None of this has come as a shock to him, who pins the resurgence of “our answer to hip-hop” down to sheer effort. “If I’m honest it’s something I really envisioned at the start of my career, it’s just a sign of all the work that people have put in”. For Miyake, grime “deserves to be where it is because it’s the biggest thing we’ve had in England for a really long time,” and he’s determined to ride the wave. While he might be a grime producer, it’s worth noting that (like any artist) he’s keen to avoid being “boxed in” by any one genre. When discussing Faze Miyake - released in October 2015 - he’s quick to point out that “the main elements of it are grime but I don’t necessarily always call it grime music”. Part of Miyake’s appeal is this fluidity, and his monthly Rinse show, where he plays “everything under the ‘electronic’ bracket” is testament to this. He uses this radio show as both a testing ground and platform. “I’m always going to use it as an outlet not only for my own music but for people that want to be heard”. When questioned about his current favourite artists, Miyake tells me that whilst he’s been listening to a lot of UK grime group 67, he also likes “weird stuff man. I only just got Spotify the other day so I’ve been listening to a lot of old music”. He grew up surrounded by the sounds of funky house and “the jungle [his] old man and cousins were into”, as well as the garage, grime and rap of his teenage years. This diversity is reflected in Miyake’s own productions, which have been well received by DJs across the spectrum. He describes last year’s debut album as “me experimenting and trying to break out of the barrier that I’m just a grime producer. I wanted to show people that my music itself can stretch to other places.”
For Miyake, these “other places” still have their origins in the quintessential British rave scene. When discussing the massive interest in grime over in the US, Miyake reasons that “the thing is with our UK rave culture is it’s different to the rest of the world, there’s nothing else like it… in America they don’t party like we do, they don’t have a music scene like we do… that’s why the grime thing to them is so fascinating, they’re so new to it all, but for us over here it’s kind of normal”. The “normal” Miyake refers to is the bass scene, encompassing “grime, dubstep, funky house, jungle, drum and bass and all of that”, which he calls “UK underground music”. This is precisely how Miyake sees his own music, pinpointing the symbiosis between these sounds as “another reason I don’t like to be boxed into one genre, [as] I want to be part of the whole UK movement”. Being a part of this whole movement is something Miyake takes literally. Even beyond his own career, he lives and breathes the scene, explaining how “most of the time I’m always out anyway. Before making music professionally I was a raver, and I like to keep that element to me and still have fun”. When chatting about his upcoming slot at Brighton’s Wild Life festival, Miyake tells me whilst he obviously wants to put on a good show he also really wants to enjoy it. “I’m going to take in the whole festival,” he says. “I want to catch Jorja Smith, I really like her” and Novelist, because “he’s my mate, so I’m looking forward to performing on the same stage as him”. Miyake’s influence may long have been tangible in the underground, but with grime music itself moving more and more into the mainstream, it feels like he’s on the verge of something big. He’s “definitely been working towards this”, with a US tour coming up and a glitzy video for his upcoming single Ice Cold getting made in collaboration with luxury watchmaking giant Hublot. It’s clear that Miyake is in a constant state of progression. Work on the next album has already begun - “I keep myself on my toes that way” - and although reluctant to give too much away, he hints “there’ll probably be a few well known artists on there”. Despite all of this, Miyake’s not the type to let success get to his head. When asked if he’d ever leave a show having only performed his own set, the long-time raver responded with a resolute, “nah. Never”. So Wild Life revellers bear in mind, Faze Miyake will be there somewhere, probably having the best time of all. Faze Miyake performs at Wild Life festival, at Brighton City Airport on Sat 11 - Sun 12 June. www.fazemiyake.com www.wildlifefestival.com
moulettes HOME AND AWAY By Stuart Rolt
The ever-evolving Brighton-based Moulettes have been pushing the limits of folk rock since their debut album in 2010. There’s one thing they’ve always retained, and that’s raw ambition. Constantly the band are moving onwards, exploring new sounds and developing new methods of working. Now their fourth album, Preternatural, has just been released. It examines the symbiotic relationship we have with nature, yet to society’s detriment this is a bond we so often choose to ignore. Although they have retained many familiar reference points from previous work, they’re now deploying a broader and more urgent sound. “We learned a lot from previous albums, so some stuff was done in a different way,” The band’s drummer, Ollie Austin, tells me. “I think we’ve learnt from this one as well.” Lush triple vocal harmonies, rich strings and a range of unusual instruments are still key components of any Moulettes track. But now an increased focus on intricate arrangements has given the band’s work a distinctive and broad feel. There’s even some flirtation with electronica elements amongst the twisting splendor of Preternatural. But the band has also learnt when to hold back, capably parting the layers to allow key phrases to shine through. Where there is exuberance exists restraint in equal measure. “Some of the arrangements are really cinematic now. Everything’s a lot bigger. I think it’s closer to what we sound like live.” It’s an album packed with ingenious melodies, orchestral flourishes and the occasional discordance, but it manages to remain cohesive throughout. There might be dalliances with progressive rock, not least due to its sonic embracing of the majesty of nature, but this a work that can distinguish between indulgence and mystery. With Austin also taking on guitar and vocal duties, the core trio of the band is completed by Hannah Miller on vocals, cello and guitar, and Ruth Skipper on vocals, bassoon and autoharp. Their numbers swell every time they head out on tour, with artists also drifting in and out for every album release. “We all come from very different musical disciplines. Whilst a couple are classically trained, Jim and I are both self-taught and from a rock background. Hannah brings her great sense of wordplay and melody,” Austin says. For this album they’ve been joined by Raevennan Husbandes, who has augmented their sound with some otherworldly guitar work. Meeting at school in Glastonbury (Mumford & Sons’ Ted Dwane being a founder member), Moulettes have recently graced the stages of Glastonbury Festival, Bestival, Cambridge Folk, End Of The Road and Green Man. The way Austin speaks about it, the band seem to spend most of their time on the road, playing
to both traditional folk crowds and more mainstream audiences. A conservative estimate would put them as entertaining around 30 festivals this year, with as many indoor shows. Their graft is paying off, as their profile and reputation is stronger than ever. We’ve met in Brighton’s Rose Hill Tavern on the very day Moulettes leave for another lengthy tour, just one part of this tireless live schedule. The bar area around us is stacked with flight cases and equipment, waiting for the rest of the band to arrive and start loading. Enthusiastically he shows the spaces in the venue they’ll be using for rehearsing and eventually recording. Lying empty for several years, this beautiful pub has been given new purpose. After plans to turn the building into a block of luxury flats were almost unanimously rejected by local residents, it’s finally been put to use serving the local arts community. A renegade art label and collective, Brighton’s Beatabet are now converting the space into a multi-purpose creative hub. For all its love of the arts, the city has been remarkably lacking in venues which truly embrace the leftfield or avant-garde. A collective of over 60 European musicians and multi-media artists, Beatabet have already launched a spring/summer multidisciplinary season at The Rose Hill. It brought the space back to life with an idiosyncratic mash of installations, performances, dance and live music. These range from their own in-house chat show to an automaton glass harmonica built from hi-fi turntables, to experimental improvisation and an art show in their toilets by local artist Jim Sanders. The venue has become a social hub for the city’s wider creative network, whilst also offering affordable access to space and equipment. It’s a fitting new home to a band bursting with talent and inspiration like the Moulettes. Over the coming months Beatabet will convert the cellars into artist and recording studios, keeping the ground floor as a flexible creative space and occasional venue. The Moulettes themselves are planning to take over a part of this lower level, which should provide an excellent base for rehearsing and recording. Of course they need to return from their mammoth bout of touring this summer before they can fully realise it’s potential. Austin is pragmatic about all the hard work though. “It is fun. But it’s also a necessary thing. If I had to be honest I’d prefer to be writing and recording. At BIMM, there’s nothing we enjoy more than inspiring talented musicians of all ages and backgrounds. With that in mind, we’re very pleased to announce the return of our popular BIMM Brighton Summer Schools for July 2016. If you’ve no prior knowledge of our Summer Schools, allow us to fill you in. Each year, we run a set of events across our BIMM colleges to help budding musicians and producers hone their live performance skills and musical ability. We will be running three separate events for rock/metal fans, indie/pop fans and those looking to improve their music production ability in any genre. The first of our classes, the Music Performance Summer School (rock/metal), will run in partnership with Marshall Amplification from Mon 25 July - Fri 29 July. Further events will include the Radar Music Performance Summer School (indie/pop), which will take place on Mon 1 – Fri 5 Aug. The following week we’ll be welcoming a new class for the Music Production Summer School powered by Ableton. The sessions will run from Mon 8 - Fri 12 Aug. The Summer Schools last for five days each, during which we give all students the chance to work with our expert tutors on an instrument of their choice. Another favourite feature of the classes is our live performance workshops, which run in the afternoon. Alongside our tutors, students also receive top tuition from special guests who visit daily. We’ve previously had appearances from Kasabian drummer Ian Matthews, Republica’s Saffron, SikTh and Basement Jaxx vocalist Elliot May. We’ve provided a breakdown of the three BIMM Brighton Summer Schools to give you an idea of what you can expect during each week-long course.
Marshall Amplification Music Performance Summer School (rock/metal): Our rock/metal Summer School is designed for musicians who want to crank the volume up to 11. Our highly experienced tutors and special guests will help you master the playing techniques used by some of the world’s most famous rock and metal gods. We give all of our Summer School students the opportunity to pick an instrument to work with over the week. If you’re looking to channel the heavy drumming style of Metallica’s Lars Ulrich or the electrifying riffs of Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello, the rock/metal Marshall Amplification Music Performance Summer School is a must. Radar Music Performance Summer School (indie/pop): Looking to improve your indie/pop playing skills? The Radar Music Performance Summer School could be the perfect opportunity for you. During the week, you’ll master the skills needed to excel in the genre. We start every morning with dedicated tuition around your chosen instrument. You’ll then have the chance to form a band with your classmates towards the end of the day and show off your skills in our afternoon live performance workshops. The sessions are intended to improve students’ playing ability with their chosen instrument, and you never know where an opportunity like this may take you. One musician who previously attended our Summer School was Two Door Cinema Club’s live drummer Ben Thompson.
On the final day of both the rock/metal and indie/pop Summer Schools, we ask all students to form a band and rehearse their favourite tracks for a performance in front of their friends and family - you’d be surprised how much all of our Summer School students improve with just one week of expert mentoring! Music Production Summer School powered by Ableton: Based in our state of the art Apple Mac suite, our Music Production Summer School is perfect for budding producers. You’ll have the opportunity to work with cutting-edge Ableton software, professional producers, special industry guests and representatives from Ableton to write and create your very own track. On top of this, you’ll also get a better understanding of Ableton Live and the Ableton Push instrument - which is widely used in the music industry today! The Summer School is invaluable for anyone looking to improve their production techniques. Our expert tutors will talk you through the complicated areas of music production, as well as the techniques used by the experts. Drum and bass, house, hip-hop, rock, reggae... we’ll give you the opportunity to explore a music genre of your choice. At the end of the week, it’s show time. You’ll have the chance to perform your finished track live on stage in front of your friends, family and classmates. This fantastic opportunity will allow you to enhance and debut your skills to a broad audience. On top of expert music tuition and coaching, we also give our Summer School students the chance to win some fantastic prizes, which have been provided by our BIMM partners. You could be in with a chance of winning guitars, amps, gig tickets, cymbals, drums, microphones and more. Speaking about the upcoming events, BIMM Brighton Summer Schools coordinator Vinnie Lammi said, “I’m very excited to be leading the Summer Schools in Brighton this year. We’ve got some great industry guests lined up, and I know it’s going to be an amazing experience for all the students involved.” The BIMM Brighton Summer Schools have been a huge success over the years and we’ve no doubt that this year will be any different. Remember, the classes are open to all musicians, providing you’re not an absolute beginner and are over the age of 11. We attract a broad spectrum of talented musicians, so don’t think you’re too old or too young to participate. You can find out more about our Summer Schools here www.bimm.co.uk/summer-school We look forward to seeing you at one of our Summer Schools soon.
paddle round the pier 2016
Paddle Round The Pier beach festival returns this Sat 2 – Sun 3 July to celebrate its 20th anniversary! In 1996 a small group of surfers, led by founder David Samuel, decided to bring together the surfing community in a social seafront event which would raise money for charity at the same time. From the 50 people who attended the first Paddle Round The Pier, the event has evolved in to what is now regarded as the world’s largest free charity beach festival, with average visitor numbers of 50,000+ people offering something for everyone that loves the beach lifestyle. The ethos of the event has remained the same since its inception – ‘spread a little aloha-spirit’ and have a good time doing it. Given the enormous success of the event, it would appear to be working! ‘Paddle’ as it affectionately known amongst the locals, features a weekend of water sports and entertainment centred around the Paddle Village on Hove Lawns. Although there is no official charge to enter the Paddle Village, Samuel is quick to remind us that “it’s all in aid of charity so everyone is expected to donate a couple of pounds on the entrance gates - every penny raised on the gates goes to charity.” Within the Paddle Village are over 200 exhibitors and retail stands featuring beach lifestyle and water sports brands. There are four main entertainment stages for 2016, the Main Stage featuring the very best of Brighton’s musicians, the Ocean Flooring kids stage with a mixture of professional children entertainers and groups performing, The ever popular Ukulele stage showcasing the accessibility of the great little instrument and the Street Funk Dance-off Arena - offering a platform for Paddle’s new southeast street dance competition. Add into the mix bars and over 12 alfresco restaurants offering the very best food and drink, there is no reason to leave the Paddle Village all weekend! The food units offer a complete mix of dietary needs, including gluten free. There’s a great mix of paddle sports to either watch, compete in or have a go at with the new paddle demonstration pool on Hove Lawns - #dontforgetyourtrunks. The essence of the event remains the same as when it first began - raise some money for charity but have a good time doing it. Despite its enormous size, the event is still run by a passionate group of volunteers known as the Paddle Crew (who are always looking for new members!).
“Brightonians are spoilt for choice when it comes to events in the city - but they know a good one when they see one,” says Samuel. “Paddle is everyone’s event, it doesn’t belong to me or any other individual - it’s collectively owned by the people and the city, and the Paddle Crew are merely the custodians.” Local affection for the event is demonstrated by the hundreds of vehicles across the city proudly displaying a Paddle sticker. 10,000 stickers are produced every year and they soon go. 2016 stickers can be collected from any local surf or Small Batch Coffee shop but hurry, as most are already gone! ‘For the betterment of others’ is Samuel’s personal mantra, which is why he proudly promotes the outreach work Paddle funds each year along with partners such as Brighton & Hove Bus company who support the Access Beach giving disabled kids and their families the chance to enjoy the beach and sea. Then there is the Schools Surf Life Saving Program sponsored by Jeep, which puts 30 kids per day through their paces as lifeguards for the whole month of June. Sharing that ‘aloha spirit’ once again! “We have a huge playground out there in the sea but it’s important that we teach everyone to respect that environment and play safe. Salt water is a great cleanser for both the physical and mental being and nothing quite beats messing about in, on or under the water.” The event has raised over £250,000 for charity in recent years and in this, their 20th anniversary year, the charities are The RNLI, Amaze and Surfers Against Sewage. Despite the success of the event all the Paddle Crew agree, “in order to keep doing good things, the event desperately needs everyone to donate as they come in. It’s a free event, which we are all very proud of, however, we had approximately 50,000 people attend again in 2015, we only collected 18k on the gates. We want to keep the event as free as possible but it’s up to the people of the city to make it happen and for everyone to play their part - imagine how much we would raise if everyone gave £2 each!“ www.paddleroundthepier.com Twitter: @PRTP

The bunting-decked, straw bale-filled heart of this event, Village Mentality plays host to a lot more team sports than you usually see at your normal festival. Artists include D.D Dumbo, Fat White Family, The Temper Trap, James Blake, Coves, Four Tet, Jackmaster b2b Gerd Janson, Fickle Friends, Plastician, Sleaford Mods, Blossoms and Beach House. This sells out every year, so act fast…. There aren’t many places in the city where you can soak up the sun while a brass band blasts out some contemporary classics.

HMS PINAFORE TUES 21 - SAT 25 JUNE THEATRE ROYAL BRIGHTON WWW.ATGTICKETS.COM/BRIGHTON “What, never? No, never! What, never? Well, hardly ever…” Following her hugely successful all-male production, Sasha Regan returns with another Gilbert & Sullivan opera. The duo’s first international hit, the absurdist and scathing look at the English class system remains as powerful as ever. It’s now given a new twist with a superb all-male cast. Dealing with the age-old conundrum of love between social classes, HMS Pinafore has infectious tunes and a beautifully constructed libretto. It mixes joyful exuberance with serious issues, showing just how brilliant Gilbert & Sullivan were at their craft. This is a perfect match for Regan’s inimitable style; it’s fresh, fast, inventive and fun - an absolute must-see!

It’s a tale of the boy who doesn’t want to grow up and three young Londoners who get dragged into his adventures. We join Peter and the Darling family as they are whisked away to a fabulous land full of colourful characters. With a spectacular mix of swashbuckling adventure and an infectious score, Peter Pan is guaranteed to bring forth your inner child, as we encounter the Lost Boys, Tiger Lily and (of course) the dastardly Captain Hook. ACCIDENTAL DEATH OF AN ANARCHIST THURS 16 – SAT 25 JUNE NEW VENTURE THEATRE WWW.NEWVENTURE.ORG.UK It’s the end of the 60s, a time of fervent political turbulence and bombs have been going off in Milan. The suspected bomber (the Anarchist) falls to his death from a police station’s fourth floor window. But did he jump or was he pushed? This piece might be hilarious, but it’s all a cover for a vicious attack on the political and economic establishment. We’re told these only exist to deceive the oppressed and exploit the distracted. With his blistering farce, Noble Prize winner Dario Fo’s masterpiece explores a myriad of changing truths. Directed by Rod Lewis, this 20th Century classic still has real political bite today.
CRYSTAL’S VARDO WEDS 29 JUNE RIALTO THEATRE WWW.RIALTOTHEATRE.CO.UK Here’s another chance to see last year’s sellout show, which blends traditional storytelling with imaginative audience participation. The play focuses on Crystal, a young gypsy girl who is being bullied at school. She runs away from home with her grandfather’s vardo and pony, only to find herself lost and miles from anywhere familiar. She has no choice but to place her trust in the audience to help her find her way back. As Crystal begins to tell the story of her ancestors, something extraordinary happens… She and her companions find themselves far back in time, when the first gypsies migrated from northern India. Piecing together the shards of her ancestry, she regains a new confidence in her own identity.

bn1 x the verse A STUDENT GUIDE TO END-OF-YEAR SHENANIGANS
Lottie says: After relentless deadlines and essays stacking up high as we come to the end of the year, the number one thing that is getting me through is the thought of going wild and partying hard at Wild Life Festival. Running Sat 11 - Sun 12 June, it’s the first big weekend I have to relax, enjoy, and kick start the summer break with all of my university friends before we head home for the summer. With artists like Rudimental, Annie Mac and - my favourite - Bastille, I certainly plan to spend the weekend at the front, singing until my voice is gone, dancing until I ache all over and generally enjoying the freedom that summer entails for us students. It’s this that helps me push through what feels like everlasting deadlines; with the excitement of this festival just around the corner, I can’t wait to jumpstart my long summer ahead.
Rob says:
The end of the year is here! Goodbye dramas over word limits and tantrums over book returns, and hello drinks in the sunshine! I look forward to starting the summer with Craft Keg Fest, the UK’s largest keg craft beer festival (the floral Four Pure Vienna Lager and Siren Soundwave IPA sound like my perfect conversation companions). The fun won’t stop once the sun goes down though, as I’ve been readying myself to be shocked by some seriously sassy shade at Bar Revenge in the evening. I’ve been watching the eighth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, which follows eight of the best upcoming drag queens compete in brains, looks, and drama (my favourite is Kim Chi), and can’t wait to catch the latest episode on their giant projector screen with friends and a cocktail in hand. It feels so good to watch someone else feeling the pressure (and not just from essays for a change!), and with 2-for-1 drinks deals, I have a feeling this day will lead into a night out too! HELLO SUMMER!
Nammie says:
I’ve copped a strop at exam season. Although the odd late-night drink at the Brighton Fringe Spiegeltent has been keeping me on the right side of sanity, unforgiving deadlines and endless exams have meant I’ve missed out on much of the blissful pre-summer buzz of Brighton Festival and The Great Escape. Six hundred hours of solitude make Nammie a dull girl.
Naturally, I need to remedy this constant state of stress. And so, the second my exams finish, the summer starts: house parties, happy hours and holidays all make the agenda, but first I’ll be delving into some good old escapism, getting nostalgic about simpler times by slubbing out on the beach in front of screenings of Clueless or Pulp Fiction at Brighton Big Screen (arriving Fri 10 June). Bring on the next three months of sunshine, laughter and adventure – I can’t wait.
Plamena says:
While being a student whose campus resides in Eastbourne doesn’t have quite the same perks when it comes to nights out as Brighton does, when it comes to celebrating the end of the academic year, we still know how do to it right! It’s a Wednesday, the sun is shining, the drinks are out, and I haven’t seen the attendance of my coursemates at such high level all year (but then, it is sacrilege to miss the annual Garden Party). The bands are playing, the Pimm’s is pouring, the burgers are more delicious than ever and we are collectively feeling the gratification of having finished our exams (hopefully passing them as well). For me, our miniature Coachella is the perfect way to start the summer! Sadly, this is exclusive to University of Brighton students, however an easy alternative would be to grab a group of your nearest and dearest for a big beach barbecue. There’s nothing quite like drinking on the beach with your best pals (especially after the stress of exams are over), and if someone turns out to be a musician, perfect! Bring your guitar, do it full Brighton-style.

Festival Fashion 2016 By Kathleen Johnston
Packing for a festival is a demon that most of us must face. Beyond trying to squeeze as much booze into your rucksack as humanly possible, as Brits, we also have to bear in mind that any attempt to look even vaguely stylish may result in pneumonia. Beyond the whims of the weather, festival fashion is about nailing summer trends, despite the fact that you probably won’t have showered nor looked in the mirror for days. There are now some looks that are so out-dated you’d be forgiven for thinking festival sites have become time warps. You can pretty much bet your last bottle of mixer that at any festival in the UK, you’ll see flocks of young women adorned in floral headbands. The summer nymph look is inoffensive, sure, but it certainly won’t win you any praise from the fashion powers that be. We’ve established the top fuss-free festival trends for 2016, together with some handy advice on how to embrace practicality whilst looking the part.
Do… -Turn to Coachella for inspiration, as the stars at this American

extravaganza set festival trends for the year. See the next point. - Incorporate fringing. Ideally in the style of festival bag of the moment: the tan crossover Hudson by Chloé. Ditto two pieces or anything crochet. - Pack shoes that will keep your feet dry. It’s tempting to bring sandals, yes. But don’t. Even if the weather verges on the miraculous, your toes will thank you when they’re not being trodden on at every step. - Bring wellies. Hunters may have been around for years, but they’re still the ultimate festy footwear. - Pack a good pair of sunglasses. But not so good that when lost to a squelching mud pit you’re left feeling as though you’ve just been made bankrupt. - Remember your waterproof jacket. The puffa, as seen everywhere during fashion week, is very in this year. As is the bomber jacket. Be warned, if you don’t pack a coat, you may well end up wearing a bin bag as a poncho. Just saying.
Don’t…
- Wear any expensive jewellery or your posh watch. Crawling around on the floor in a dark tent filled with hundreds of people is not something you want to be doing. Embrace cheap and cheerful costume jewellery as an easy way to spice up an outfit. If you (ladies) want to be on trend, you can’t go wrong with a choker or a body chain. - Dismiss fancy dress completely. As much as you probably won’t feel like ‘going all out’ when you’re battling a three-day hangover having slept in a field, fancy dress can have its uses. Take inspiration from Miss Kylie Jenner and wear a wig, it’s a great way to cover up unwashed hair. Chaps: some face paint, glitter or even an ostentatious hat will do the job nicely. - Risk a Native American style headdress. Sure, they look cool, but now they’re just plain tired and predictable. Plus, wearers have previously been blasted for cultural appropriation. Just steer clear. -Wear a onesie. The preserve of drunken male festival-goers everywhere, avoid at all costs if you’d prefer not to look like a giant baby. Follow these golden rules, and you’ll spend the weekend channelling your inner Kate Moss or Idris Elba. And you never know, if you do play your sartorial cards right, you may even get featured in a promotional video for a cider with a name you can’t pronounce.

the hogwallops WE ARE FAMILY
By Stuart Rolt
They’re not like any other family, but in a way perhaps they are. The Hogwallops are a constantly squabbling selection of characters. Their home is a curious place, which bears more resemblance to a playground than a normal house. Even the simplest of tasks are undertaken with extravagant acrobatic zeal. This imaginary situation is not so removed from that of the average ensemble circus company. Living and working together can create close bonds between performers, but also forces them to recognise each other’s foibles. “It has its moments, just like any family. You get the good, the bad and the ugly,” Lost in Translation’s Annabel Carberry tells me. “But that means you’re much closer and understand each other much better. Over time it makes working together easier. You have to go through that process.” The Hogwallops is the realisation of this company’s mission to combine circus with theatre, placing emotion, meaning and narrative at the heart of their acrobatic spectacle. Originally formed as a duo, their name emanates from the effects of founder Massimiliano Rossetti and his partner’s differing native languages. As the company expanded into an ensemble as did the cultural, language and disciplinary differences. “We’ve been working together for quite a long time, so we understand each other quite well.” In terms of what they present to the audience, their brand of circus offers physical language that can be understood universally. Commissioned by Blackpool’s Showzam Festival in 2014, The Hogwallops is a colourful, loud and funny series of domestic adventures. They drew inspiration from Roald Dahl’s The Twits and Ettore Scola’s Brutti, Sporchi e Cattivi in which both feature ridiculous characters navigating a chaotic home-life. The show’s misfits offer up a heart-stopping collection of aerial and floor acrobatics. Just like any family they are often annoyed by each other, but ultimately linked by a strong bond. The line-up between fantasy and reality may have been a little blurred by the show’s development. “At that time we were living and working together in the winter in Great Yarmouth. It was quite a tough situation. So we were creating a similar situation in our work without realising it.” Onstage and above it, the contents of an extraordinary family home are subverted, stolen away from intended purposes to form props for incredible feats. A washing line becomes a tightrope, a walking frame is a trapeze, a child makes a splendid skipping rope, and a banana… Well, the banana has its part to play. Primarily a story about familial relationships The Hogwallops is intricately layered, yet can be enjoyed by a wide range of ages and backgrounds. Bolstered by an original live score, it’s fun, quirky and exhilarating, with the action occasionally drifting into the surreal. It’s been revised and evolved over the last few years, refining the amount of detail in the narrative. Carberry admits that integrating theatre into a highly technical circus is a challenging process. For a start, development time is greatly increased. “It can be tricky for the performers that come from a circus background. They are very different art forms, with
very different priorities. There are even different mental states when you’re performing.” Lost in Translation’s shows have an undeniable communal feel. As well as performing together, the company often stay together during rehearsals at their house in Norwich. Rather than a disparate assortment of different feats, they’ve created a work that binds their performance together with a compelling narrative. With vivid characters, slapstick and even a little magic, it’s absurd and mesmerising. So now this frenetic circus spectacular is coming to Worthing’s Connaught Theatre, as part of a summer circus programme. “We went to do the site visit and they were really enthusiastic. So we’re really looking forwards to go there.” Seasons like this are another recognition of how the UK’s circus scene is gaining momentum. Now reaching a level comparable with other art forms, shows like The Hogwallops continue to push for widespread artistic acceptance. By mixing theatre, comedy and domesticity with leading-edge circus skills, Lost in Translation are at the forefront of a new wave of companies examining how the form can be developed and presented. “Circus has still got such a long way to go in terms of boundaries. There’s still a lot to be explored in how the body can be used and offer expression.” The Hogwallops comes to Worthing’s Connaught Theatre on Fri 8 - Sat 9 July. www.litcircus.com www.worthingtheatres.co.uk

stand up & slam
After a killer year at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2015, the highenergy, laugh-a-minute, five-star show that pits stand up comedians against poets landed in Brighton back in December with a residency at the Komedia and a sold out show at the Brighton Fringe. Each show, the comedy and poetry team captains are joined by guest acts, with the audience voting for the winning art form. The team captains are here to put their case forward for why their team is the ultimate winner.
TEAM COMEDY: Now this, this is where the magic happens. Because the next part of the night is where my guest comedians, and they’re the finest, plucked from the live comedy circuit, TV, anything you can imagine, this is where they beat the poets into submission with their array of one liners, puns and hilarious EVERYTHING. This is entertainment and the audience knows it. TEAM POETRY: What he means is this is where his acts use a range of fairly simple devices to tell us stories direct from their own lives with very little actual art or creation involved. Mostly phallus based jokes. TEAM COMEDY: First thing you need to know is that Stand Up & Slam is probably the coolest show out there. It brings together words and battling. There’s a bit of stand up, a bit of poetry (yeah, sorry about that) - top-notch stuff. It’s like 8 Mile. Well, it’s like a middle class 8 Mile. It is like 8 Mile though. But set in a Waitrose. Next thing you need to know is that stand ups are clearly the best. Ridiculous to be having the battle in the first place really.
TEAM COMEDY: You can say ‘dick’. TEAM POETRY: No need. Before my poets take to the stage to deliver beautifully constructed and performed pieces, by turns hilarious and heartbreaking, using all kinds of clever literary devices. TEAM COMEDY: Which they read from a piece of paper. Note that the comedians actually learn their stuff. TEAM POETRY: That’s because the poets can read. TEAM COMEDY: Wait - that was sarcasm! That’s a comedy thing! That’s ours! You’re like a puppy, you’re so eager to please. TEAM POETRY: Was that a simile, Team Comedy? Stooping so low as to steal our poetic devices? Oh well done, you’re so clever. TEAM COMEDY: Huh. It’s almost as if what poets and comedians do is pretty similar in many ways, and the entire battle concept of the show is merely a way to show off brilliant comedians and excellent poets to an audience who just love to be entertained. TEAM POETRY: Comedy as always. Missing all traces of subtlety. TEAM COMEDY: Gloating really suits you, Team Poetry - it’s your natural state after all, thinking you’re so superior to everyone. TEAM POETRY: Well, we’ll just have to see what the readers think - time for a shameless plug? TEAM COMEDY: I’ll do it, since comedians have no shame. Ahem:
TEAM POETRY: Interesting you say that team comedy, by my notes it seems that team poetry are the victors so far this season. TEAM COMEDY: Trust you to have it written down. TEAM POETRY: That’s my job here. I do the admin, first and foremost, because it’s quite simply not something we can trust the comedians to manage. There wouldn’t be a show if we left it to you. TEAM COMEDY: Note that he’s getting personal already. Pretty insecure these poets. Can’t rely on just their art. TEAM POETRY: We bring guest acts on with us each show. We let them know whom they’ll be battling in advance so they can do their research. Sometimes the battle starts earlier…
Stand Up & Slam is on at Komedia Brighton on the third Wednesday of every month, with new acts and hosts each show. Next shows are Weds 15 June and Weds 20 July. Tickets available at www.standupandslam.com

BENT DOUBLE SOME LIKE IT THEA-SKOT SAT 4 JUNE KOMEDIA WWW.KOMEDIA.CO.UK/BRIGHTON After a sell-out, five-star run at Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Alison Thea-Skot brings her surreal, joyous and unhinged character comedy show to Brighton. Featured on BBC Radio 4, she can also be found performing with Chortle Award winners Austentatious. She’s also a critically acclaimed actress and writer, working extensively from Shakespeare’s Globe to the BBC’s Basil Brush, as well as being nominated for Best Actress at The British Independent Film Festival for her role in the short film Desire. Hang out with Celine Dion; join the Heartbreak Club and end on a finale from The Woman with Feet for Hands. This exhilarating show coaxes you into a world where ultimately you become the hero.
SARAH MILLICAN WED 15 - FRI 17 JUNE BRIGHTON DOME WWW.BRIGHTONDOME.ORG Sarah Millican is daring to venture outside, so you’d best bring a cardie. She might look your sensible auntie, but she’s not afraid to pop out an anal sex gag if she fancies it (the joke, not the act!). So get ready for very graphic exploration of what it is to be a woman of a certain age. Her warm-hearted ‘mumsy’ persona stands at odds with her double-entendre laden material. But no one this charming could be found too offensive, no matter how vivid the mental pictures she shares. Her main selling point is she’s just like the slightly inappropriate best friend we all wish we had - loud, indiscrete and obsessed by bodily functions.
SUN 5 JUNE KOMEDIA WWW.KOMEDIA.CO.UK/BRIGHTON Presented by Zoe Lyons, undisputedly Hove’s funniest lady, this monthly comedy show is THE place to see the UK’s rising talent. Taking on headlining duties, Angela Barnes will be turning self-deprecation into an art form, that’s not to say she’s uncomfortable in herself, but she’s simply overflowing with honesty. Joining her is Sofie Hagen, another fine comedian who’s learnt to embrace all her quirks. After smashing it at the Comedy Festival and winning best newcomer in Edinburgh, she’ll be taking us through another candid sashay through her life experiences. Completing the line-up is Sarah Keyworth, who’s armed with canny one-liners, offbeat family anecdotes and some very personal confessions.
KRATER COMEDY CLUB THU 16 JUN KOMEDIA WWW.KOMEDIA.CO.UK/BRIGHTON Ready to make your Thursday sparkle here is Carly Smallman. Relatable and instantly likeable, she twists the seemingly normal into comic gold. Joining her is the rather fine and occasionally relentless Jack Heal, who offers us some devastatingly original and very clever wordplay. Phil Cooper, along with his occasionally surreal observations, will be taking everyone with us on a scathing tour of modern day society. Completing the line-up is the ever-reliable Lloyd Langford takes on headlining duties tonight. We know he’s not really that grumpy, but that won’t stop him humorously taking umbrage at everything… It’s all kept moving by your incomparable MC, Mr Stephen Grant!
GEORGE EGG – ANARCHIST COOK TUES 7 JUN ROPETACKLE WWW.ROPETACKLECENTRE.CO.UK A fanatical cook with an anarchic approach to making meals, George Egg found himself dissatisfied with the quality of hotel room service while touring the comedy clubs of the world. So he took matters into his own hands. Pushing the boundaries of what can be cooked using just the contents of a standard hotel room, George Egg returns with a new brace of ways to annoy housekeeping staff. So get ready to learn you too can prepare an entire three-course meal using the iron, a tiny-sized kettle and some random objects. A surreal and absurd mix of stand-up comedy and striking innovation, this is an unforgettable demonstration of extreme multitasking.
ANNA MANN’S SHENANIGANS MON 27 JUNE THE OLD MARKET WWW.THEOLDMARKET.COM Star of Derek, Life’s Too Short, and Murder in Successville, Colin Hoult unleashes his favourite creation. Ms Anna Mann is a siren of stage and screen and has appeared in such classics as Who’s for Turkish Delight?, A Bowl For My Bottom and Rogue Baker. Come see her waffle on about her glorious life so far, music, dance and laughter. Then we can all have a fun chat and solve the world’s problems together. Keep an eye out for special guests. A once-gorgeous star of stage and screen, Mann unloads her life experiences whether you want her to or not. This is an eccentric, hilarious and often overwhelmingly vivid exercise in great character comedy.

JOANNA NEARY: FACEFUL OF ISSUES TUES 7 JUNE THE OLD MARKET WWW.THEOLDMARKET.COM Nominated for Best Show at Dave’s Leicester Comedy Festival, Joanna Neary’s latest work heads to Hove. The much-loved Celia, housewife and host, returns on tour with her Toxborough Village Hall Chat Show. It’s a strange world, full of middle-English politeness and ridiculous topical interests. Everything is in aid of the animal hospital, for a kitten that needs an iron lung. Inspired and beautifully executed, the show provides plenty of topical talks, showbiz exclusives and celebrity interviews. There are also a local locksmith’s bawdy confessions, a recipe for air soup and a photograph of a conker. With live music from Centre-Parting Martin, why would you stay at home watching television?
KIERAN HODGSON: LANCE TUES 14 JUNE KOMEDIA WWW.KOMEDIA.CO.UK/BRIGHTON Warm, funny, full of delightful stories and as much fun as you can get from two wheels, Hodgson recounts his childhood fascination with Lance Armstrong. It’s a heartfelt and hilarious story of growing up, betrayal by professional athletes, and redemption. Nominated for Best Show at the Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Awards in 2015, he enjoyed a sell-out four-week run in London’s West End last autumn. Starring in BBC2’s Making Dad’s Army last Christmas, Hodgson has also appeared in BBC2’s Count Arthur Strong and the film Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa. Now he takes his touching and ingeniously constructed comedy show around the UK, examining teenage cycling, sullied dreams and migrating from the north.
CHRISTIAN TALBOT AND PAUL DUNCAN MCGARRITY WEDS 29 JUNE SWEET DUKEBOX WWW.SWEETVENUES.COM/BRIGHTON Although Edinburgh might drag all the comedy talent away during August, it does mean there’s a rich preview season in Brighton & Hove during the run-up. Christian Talbot has admitted in the past that he’s crap at being Irish. He’s past that now surely, but he’ll still be punctuating his gentle self-deprecation style with some wondrously clever one-liners. He is perhaps the only professional archaeologist performing stand-up in the UK. Paul Duncan McGarrity has the dubious honour of digging up nearly 2,500 skeletons on the London Crossrail development by day and making rooms full of people laugh by night. Originally a member of critically acclaimed improv group Deadman In A Box, he blends a sense of history with a keen comic edge.
STEVE BUGEJA & TIFF STEVENSON WEDS 29 JUNE KOMEDIA WWW.KOMEDIA.CO.UK/BRIGHTON There’s some festival happening up in Northland during August, so two of the UK’s brightest comedy talents are previewing their Fringe shows this month. Winner of the 2013 BBC Radio New Comedy Award, Steve Bugeja is one of the standout new acts of the past few years. He’s had plenty of odd social nightmares, as well as a knack for detailed comedy, so let him share with you. Stand-up comedian, actor and writer, Tiff Stevenson’s thought-provoking and engaging style has seen her consistently play to packed audiences. Full of cynicism and brash as they come, she’s one of the most brutally hilarious comics on the scene right now.
LUCY PORTER TUES 14 JUNE CAROLINE OF BRUNSWICK WWW.CAROLINEOFBRUNSWICK.CO.UK Here’s another Edinburgh comedy preview, there’s a lot of them about. But you might want to book straight away for this lady. Chatty, easy-going and seriously witty, Ms Porter is ready to once again draw you into her world. It’s a strangely charming place, lit by positivity and packed with experiences we can all relate to. She’s been to the festival for over a decade now, and you’ll struggle to find a more comfortable performer. She’s the master of the tightly woven anecdote, with material that is keen-eyed and heartwarmingly inclusive. Of course her world-view is slightly obscured by the cloud of fairy dust perpetually surrounding her, but who couldn’t fall slightly in love with someone this uplifting?
PHIL NICHOL THURS 30 JUNE CAROLINE OF BRUNSWICK WWW.CAROLINEOFBRUNSWICK.CO.UK It’s another Edinburgh preview, this time from a comedian whose shows are as fastpaced as they are hilarious. So there’ll be little pausing for breath or reflection here. Packed with euphoric and frenetic energy, the gags come fast and often. The whole affair might be intense, but Nichol’s perfect sense of comic timing shines through during every moment of his routine. He’s on a one-man mission to ensure his audiences have a good time, often throwing in random facets to his shows to ensure it will be unlike anything you’ve experienced before. It’s high-energy and high impact stand-up from one of Canada’s biggest talents. Not recommended for the slothful or slow of thinking!
RubY waX LOST AND FOUND
By her own admission there’s still plenty to learn. Ruby Wax is endeavouring to fully understand how our minds work. Through her two books, 2013’s Sane New World: Taming the Mind and this year’s A Mindfulness Guide for the Frazzled she’s brought comfort, inspiration and empowerment to thousands. Although the US-born star is quick to say the books are not trendy improvement manuals, instead labelling them as science made funny. “Self-help is based on more of a weekend workshop,” she tells me. “You can’t do anything that quickly. It’s to do with muscles rather than a wish. You’re exercising parts of your brain.” Packed with charm and energy, her work has been transferred into two hugely successful shows. Educating audiences about the brain’s inner workings, she’s able to entertain whilst helping us all improve our cognitive health. Now Wax is headed to Brighton’s Theatre Royal on Sun 19 June, to combine sound thinking with sharp observations, anecdotes and some of her renowned wit. Staunchly unafraid to discuss her experiences with depression, this much-loved comedian began exploring how we could all train our minds to work in a calmer fashion. “People are burning out, or becoming frazzled as the title says. I was reading a science journal about what you could do so you wouldn’t have to run to a shrink.” Her search for something that enabled her to be “driving the car instead of being in it” uncovered a technique called Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). Its methodology has been helping people face issues head
By Stuart Rolt on, providing the power to let go of their fears and deal with problems. “I would have hugged a tree if that was the answer.” As it aimed to help individuals recognise and repel bad feelings, especially those commonly associated with depression, she contacted its creator to find out more. “I said, ‘how does the brain work?’ He said I had to get into Oxford. Well, if you throw me something like that…” Wax admits it was a miracle she got into the university, previous flirtations with academia curtailed so she could hitchhike to Europe. But now the subject matter truly interested her. Wax’s husband even joked she somehow knew the experience would inspire a good show one day. A great deal of work later, she graduated with a master’s degree in MBCT. The whole process has been funnelled into A Mindfulness Guide for the Frazzled, an entertaining and light-hearted introduction to what she learnt. While the book is thoughtprovoking, it was vital that it remained compelling. “If you make somebody laugh then all the information goes into their heads, because they’re open for it.” This practical guide outlines a range of brain exercises, which form a six-week mindfulness course, explaining basic concepts, how it’s practised and the importance of living “in the moment”. Leaving the US in the late 70s, Wax joined the Royal Shakespeare Company. She rose to prominence on BBC’s Girls on Top in 1985, but she was already becoming known for her
skills as an interviewer. During the next decade she was regularly scrutinising some of the most famous personalities on the planet, including Tom Hanks, Imelda Marcos, Pamela Anderson and Sarah, Duchess of York. The latter drew an audience of over 14 million. By her own admission, Wax’s career has revolved around investigating what drives our actions. “I was always interested in how people work, what makes them tick. Now it’s been taken up a notch.”
Excelling at making an extremely complex subject simple to understand, Ms Wax is showing how the power of mindfulness can be applied to daily life. It seems unlikely she’ll ever be bored with the working of the human mind. “You keep wanting to figure out how does that work? How does my memory work? How come I do this? How come I have critical thinking? If someone was really interested in cooking they’d have to start reading cookbooks.” A prominent campaigner for mental health issues, this year she was awarded an OBE in recognition of her efforts. Did she dream of such a thing as a child? “I didn’t know what it was. I only knew what a fairy princess was, but I wasn’t heading in that direction. But it’s close...” Ruby Wax: Frazzled comes to Brighton’s Theatre Royal on Sun 19 June. Her book, A Mindfulness Guide for the Frazzled, is out now through Penguin Books. www.atgtickets.com/brighton www.rubywax.net

Wax has learnt that whatever is going on in your mind affects how you talk to people. “How you see yourself, is how you see the world.” The way we think isn’t necessarily correct; it’s just a habit. MBCT offers a way to train your brain. You’re still you, but no longer tied to some preconception of yourself. “There is a limit. If you’ve not got the Einstein gene you’re not going there,” she lets loose a sly laugh. “But there’s a lot more elbow room than people think. That’s kind of liberating.” The overwhelming message from Wax’s show is that people aren’t stuck with who they are. “We can give ourselves labels like: ‘I’m weak’ or ‘I’m a bully’. It’s not true. You can decide who you are, but that’s not how your brain works.” So mindfulness concerns itself with knowing directly what is going on inside and around us, moment by moment. This helps us enjoy the world around us more, understand ourselves better and develop a refreshed appreciation for things we have but may take for granted. It’s possible to train ourselves to notice when our thoughts are taking over and realise that thoughts are simply ‘mental events’, which don’t have to control us.

There’s no suggestion mindfulness provides some wondrous panacea. Growing institutional enthusiasm for the practice might even be financially motivated. Though research has started to lend support: a study published in the American Medical Association’s Psychiatry Journal indicated MBCT can be a useful tool in both preventing and managing depression. Trials involving 1,258 patients showed 38% of mindfulness-based therapy recipients experienced a depressive relapse, compared to 49% of those who received no treatment. Covering age, sex and level of education, analysis indicated no significant influence by these factors on the therapy’s performance.

She describes her new show as “a conversation with myself”, but found people wanted to interact and express their own experiences. “It becomes a place where people can be heard, or ask questions they’ve never asked before. I don’t claim to have the answers, but other people in the audience might.” It seems our brains are fundamentally stuck in the Stone Age, not yet fully adapted to what is going on around us. To get anything done is now vastly complicated. We can process actions, but we often fail to recognise the energy it takes to achieve everything. So often we stop noticing things around us, lose touch with the way we feel and become trapped in our thoughts. This can stop us appreciating how these thoughts govern our emotions and behaviour.

INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE THURS 23 JUNE 20TH CENTURY FOX
The rising talent of Melissa McCarthy continues to redefine how we look at female-led comedy. The Mike & Molly star plays a disgraced capitalist icon that gets caught insidertrading, whilst Kristen Bell takes on the role of her harassed assistant. Emerging from prison, this vile boss is intent on rebranding herself as America’s latest sweetheart. But not everyone she previously screwed over is so quick to forgive and forget. Expect loads of slap-talk, deviousness and the greatest Girl Guide riot ever committed to celluloid. Overall this teaches a lesson about humility, understanding and how to be obnoxious with unparalleled zeal.
Director Roland Emmerich won many of us back with his wonderfully ludicrous, terrorist battling White House Down, so now it’s time to revisit a classic. Two decades after the first invasion, Earth is faced with a new extra-solar threat. Mankind’s been busy tooling up, but will the shiny new space defences repel the bug-eyed alien scum onslaught? Will Smith was unavailable for more alien punching and cigar smoking. So Jessie Usher fills in as the absent Captain Hiller’s son, joining Liam Hemsworth, Joey King, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Sela Ward. There’s a female president, Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman make their return, and stuff will certainly go BOOOOM!

Two of the 60s’ most resolute, if not popular, figures come together in one very strange meeting. The only photograph of their meeting is the most requested item from the US National Archive, more than the Constitution or Bill of Rights. Michael Shannon presents a screen-filling version of Elvis, while Kevin Spacey portrays a suitably crumpled Nixon. One is seeking to become a ‘federal agent at large,’ reportedly so he can carry guns and drugs with impunity, the other finding a spare 30 minutes in his hectic schedule. Director Liza Johnson demonstrates a change of pace here, in this breezy and slightly comic glance at this most curious of encounters.
There’s still some glamour left in austerity Britain it seems. Edina and Patsy are still shopping, drinking and acting horrendously in London’s most chic clubs. But now they’ve been blamed for a ‘disruption’ at a fashionable launch party. The resulting media storm sees the pair relentlessly pursued by the paparazzi. They flee to the French Riviera, where they hatch a plan to make their escape permanent. But of course life in the glamorous playground of the super-rich won’t be so easy for this loudmouthed PR and her only true friend. Plenty of the original characters return, as well as a deluge of celebrity cameos.
gReen RooM By Stuart Rolt
Although often an independent film will generate a lot of interest through mould-breaking ambition, it’s rare for a horror piece to encourage such fervour. Drawing impressive interest at festivals around the world, Jeremy Saulnier’s gory survival tale has been achieving exactly that. Green Room is a ferocious and darkly humorous take on an established horror meme. Featuring rich ensemble performances by Star Trek’s Anton Yelchin, Imogen Poots, Alia Shawkat from Arrested Development and Peaky Blinders’ Joe Cole, it sees a shambolic punk band inadvertently book a gig at a bar packed with backwater Nazis. After a shock discovery backstage, the rockers find themselves being hunted down by a group of bloodthirsty thugs led by Sir Patrick Stewart. Designed to be experiential, textural and to elicit primal emotional responses, this film is utterly relentless in its approach. Saulnier’s previous work, Blue Ruin, acquired a large cult following. Rich stylishness belying its low budget, this revenge thriller sought to explore the violent tendencies inherent in American society. No less bloody, Green Room in turn draws on Saulnier’s love of making zombie films and playing in hardcore bands during his high school years. Drawn to the aesthetics and momentum of punk, as well as the creativity of filmmaking. It felt natural to blend the two when he wrote this new film. “This is a blunt-force narrative, meant to be experienced viscerally, in your guts,” Saulnier says. “As the plot develops and the situation spirals out of control, the ideology and affiliations that set the stage for conflict are completely stripped away.” As with Blue Ruin, he again focuses on protagonists who are completely out of their depth. Nobody has a clever master plan to deal with their situation. Rigid visual and thematic structures remain, but the narrative is driven by characters acting impulsively under extreme duress. “When they make panicky decisions, I let them be wrong. They’re not action heroes, they’re scared kids, and not nearly as badass as they may have thought they were only a few minutes ago.” This liberal use of ‘everyman’ characters allows for a deeper emotional investment from the audience. Onscreen events offer a heightened reality, but it’s easy to relate to these hapless protagonists. The more vulnerable they appear, the more we can all identify with them. Where Green Room really succeeds is in the rich emotional and physical commitment of its cast. “We worked with casting director Avy Kaufman and saw a multitude of amazing actors. One of the hardest parts of this was not being able to cast some of the incredible talents we got to meet with.” The inclusion of Stewart, who’s known more for his Shakespearian work or commanding
space ships, provides a career high-point moment for the veteran actor. Time was running out to cast the film’s exceptionally cruel lead villain. In a moment of pure serendipity, Stewart had just joined the management company Saulnier was signed with and was interested in playing a bad guy. “At first I kind of furrowed my brow at the idea because Patrick is so dignified and well-loved all over the world, while Darcy (Stewart’s character) is an absolute evil bastard. But then it occurred to me: that’s exactly why he’s perfect for this!” In a career spanning around 50 years, you’ll never have seen him in a role like this. As the leader of a gang of white supremacists, Stewart is driven by a poisonous ideology. Although the film is intended to be a crazy punk-rock rollercoaster for the audience instead of a political lecture, it highlights the rise in extremism and economic disparity. “If anything, Green Room is an examination of American societal power structure and how self-serving agendas can be packaged and sold as ideology to those who would least benefit from them. Politics tends to seep into my films, but it’s never intended to become a foreground element.” There’s no escaping the brutality of this film. Yet the true horror stems from the emotional impact of each violent act. Aside from being a frenzied genre movie, it’s as much about conversations as it is about mayhem and suspense. “Of course, there are fundamental ingredients that are always going to be important to me, whatever the movie: honestly realized characters, visual craft, good ol’ splatter and laughs. Those are the things that attracted me to movies in the first place.” Green Room is in cinemas now. www.greenroom-movie.com

Wahaca FROM DE JUÁREZ TO NEW ROAD By Gary Marlowe
Connecticut. Her recommendation of British steak the Mexican way (£10.95) was on the money. Tender strips of bavette steak with bags of flavour having been marinated in a Pasilla de Oaxaca rub, served rare on a bed of green rice and the most refreshing side salad you could wish for. In fact, my only problem was I could have done with another bowl of it!
In the same way no one wants to go into an empty restaurant, people are prepared to queue to get into one that’s full. Brighton’s booming food scene is attracting a wave of restauranteurs to the city. But with good locations hard to come by, often a new place to eat replaces what used to be an old place to shop. More commonly, as tastes change, one restaurant replaces another. Wahaca is the Mexican restaurant chain created by Thomasina Miers, arguably the most successful winner MasterChef has produced and with her siblings living here, Brighton is where she’s been especially keen to open for a long time. The restaurant claims authenticity and serves small plates, in their case, Mexican street food on rectangular platters. Now I’ve not been to Mexico, but I have every reason to believe that Wahaca (which, if you were wondering, is the phonetic spelling of Oaxaca) is about as close to the street food you’d find on Mexican streets. Indeed, I was told that one of my fellow diners was a bona fide Mexican and this was not her first visit. Considering the place had only been open for less than two weeks that seemed like a pretty good endorsement. Being street food, this is casual dining. The menu is expansive, but easy to navigate being divided into nibbles, street food, sides and what they describe as bigger food. Having previously sampled the guacamole and nachos as well as the pulled pork tacos a couple of weeks earlier
from their free food truck, I lost all sense of adventure and ordered them again. They say you can’t get too much of a good thing and at Wahaca they’re right. The portions are generous, but manageable and both appetisers tasted just as good as I remembered. Guacamole is one of those dips that’s easy to make but even easier to make wrong. It doesn’t contain many ingredients, but it’s all about the balance and the freshness. Wahaca’s guac (that’s what they call it) is zingy and refreshing, containing the two essential ingredients: freshly squeezed lime juice and lots of chopped coriander. It was delicious, as were the accompanying nachos. Again, nachos are ubiquitous, but Wahaca’s are a bit special, a bit crunchier. It might have something to do with their making them fresh each day and adding a secret seasoning. The pork pibil tacos (£4.25) are another taste sensation. You get a set of three, with each being about two bites, one if you’re greedy. Filled with melt-in-the-mouth pork, slow cooked in Yucatecan marinade and served with sliced, vibrantly pink, spicy pickled onions it’s delish. Pibil is a Mayan word meaning buried or cooked underground. For my main I sought the advice of my server. Rita was a ball of energy and enthusiasm, just the right side of attentive and surprisingly knowledgeable about Mexican food despite hailing from
To wash everything down I started conservative and ended up off piste. An ice-cold Corona (£3.85) with a wedge of lime is perfect for cooling the spice, but whilst it’s a Mexican beer, it’s one we’ve all had. Less common is Negra Modelo (£4.25), a dark amber beer that was new to me. But what made it really memorable was having it Michelada-style (+65p), that meant adding it to a salt-rimmed glass of spiced fresh lime juice. The best way to describe it is it’s like a beer version of a bloody mary. Indeed, I was told that in Mexico they even add tomato juice to it. With no room for dessert, I finished with another revelation: a glass of mescal, something else I’d not tried before. I assumed it would be similar to tequila, but it was quite different: something to be sipped like whisky, rather than downed like a shot. It’s complex, with smoky accents followed by a nice warm feeling. And that’s just what you get at Wahaca. Not just from the food and the staff, but when you get the bill. The most expensive item on the menu is under 11 quid. With great food and great value, it’s no wonder it was packed. It may be a chain, but it doesn’t feel like one. There’s nothing corporately bland about it, even the huge murals on the wall were hand-painted by Mazatl, a street artist who they flew over from Mexico. You can’t get much more authentic than that! revoluTION A CHANGE ON WEST STREET By Freya Hughes
good amount of options meant there was something for everyone. I went for the black ‘n’ blue burger (£10.50): a patty smothered in blue cheese and piled up with garlic mushrooms and peppercorn sauce on the side. My succulent burger had many rich flavours to it so I didn’t go too heavy with applying the peppercorn. Being a huge lover of both garlic and mushrooms, I really enjoyed my meal, especially the crisp sweet potato fries on the side. Another burger chosen was the Brooklyn chicken (£9.75), consisting of the everpopular buttermilk-fried chicken, streaky bacon, smoked cheddar, fried pickles and chipotle barbecue sauce. The chicken itself arriving tender and perfectly battered, being teamed with smoked cheddar and the BBQ sauce gave it an authentic southern-state heat that went down a treat. Warranting its own paragraph, the last main to arrive was quite a spectacle. The mother clucker burger (12.95) is an absolute beast of a burger. Layered up with treat after treat, the bun encased a beef patty, corn battered chicken, smoked cheddar, streaky bacon, spicy chorizo sauce, sweet potato fries, crispy onions, smokinnaise AND barbecue fries, you’ve got to be damn hungry to attempt this one. As you can imagine, this burger is packed full of flavour and requires either cutlery or an inhumanly large mouth. The cheese melted down each layer of meat and almost glued the other components together, while the other fried sides packed in provided varied levels of seasoning so the burger just kept on giving. Amazingly, this particular colleague wolfed it down along with the standard caulislaw and a side of fries. It’s making me hungry just thinking about this mountainous triumph of beef, chicken and the gorgeous smokinnaise (yes, it is exactly what you’d imagine it to be). With perhaps the biggest and nicely finished outside space in the area, and upper and lower floor each with its own bar and interior theme, Revolution is the place to go for almost any occasion. Especially for summer cocktails and adventurous burgers.
First impressions are said to be important. I think this is predominantly true of restaurants and watering holes, more than anything else. For example, taking a walk down West Street, you’ll come across some sad, dilapidated buildings that have been unloved and left to fester. Until you find yourself outside the warmly lit, grand frontage of Revolution. Walking in to a clean, polished ground floor bar, I took a seat with three colleagues below a large lit-up ‘vodka’ sign, giving the rustic-yet-modern interior a nod towards their ‘Vodka Revs’ days. Now a much more food-oriented venue, the versatility of the space is being used to its optimum. Chic wooden tables surrounded by soft leather banquettes and high barstool-like chairs give the main bar/ restaurant area a modern and attractive look, making customers of any walk of life feel at home. Settling in and scanning our menus, we’re helpfully told by the knowledgeable staff that new additions have been made, which we’re all excited by. First off, cocktails. Running happy hour from 5-7pm (Monday - Friday), we find ourselves with a wealth of options to choose from – and they’re two for one. Two of us opt for the Long Island iced tea (£8.50), Revolution’s take of which delicately balances the long list of booze and Coca-Cola. Including Stoli vodka (naturally), Cointreau, Beefeater gin, Bacardi Carta Blanca rum and Olmeca tequila, these drinks quenched our thirst after an afternoon in the sunshine. The smooth taste had a nice hit of white rum at the back of the palate, making us feel very much on holiday. The other half of our group opted for guava coladas (£7.25) containing a tropical mix of Stoli vodka, Licor 43 (a fruity and citrusy Spanish liqueur), lime juice, pineapple juice and guava puree. Garnished with a mini umbrella and a slice of fresh pineapple, summer vibes were very much present and correct. Our meals came quickly from the kitchen, starting with the delicious lobster ravioli (£10.50), cooked in with lobster, ricotta, pesto and Italian hard cheese. The flavours married up very well though a larger serving may have been good as it was hoovered up the second the plate hit the table! The new menu’s ‘Burger Off’ section drew the rest of our group in, served in a pretzel bun with fries (potato or sweet potato) and caulislaw, which is as it sounds - cauliflower slaw. A

pizza company PICK VAN DYKE (ROAD) By Kelly Edwards-Good
It was a creamy disc of delicate delight. Next was the ‘house’ Special Pizza (£9) with mozzarella cheese, Parma ham, rocket, Parmesan cheese and extra virgin olive oil. This tasted really fresh and light, piled high with crunchy rocket and Parmesan shavings with delicious strips of Parma ham hidden underneath as a nice surprise. The third choice was the Capricciosa with tomato sauce, mozzarella, Parma ham, Italian salami, olives, red onion and extra virgin olive oil (£9). A really meaty mouthful, it was packed full of flavor, with each bite bringing something nice and saucy. Finally, with very full bellies, we tried the Salami with tomato sauce, mozzarella, Italian salami, black olives, basil and extra virgin olive oil. Nice and simple but flavourful nonetheless, with the quality of each ingredient given space to shine through. Their signature tomato sauce is really juicy, but somehow the base of each pizza remains nice and crunchy at the same time. These guys really don’t skimp on toppings with any of their pizzas. It’s evident they view what they do as a true craft. A big plus is that all of these pizzas come in a hearty ten-inch size. From all of the numerous pizza establishments Brighton & Hove has to offer, The Real Italian Pizza Company really is up there with the best. If you’re up near the van some hungry lunchtime, or craving an authentic pizza fix delivered direct to your door after a particularly heavy night, then I’d wholeheartedly recommend you give these guys a go. The Real Italian Pizza Company van is at 167 Dyke Road, Brighton BN3 1TX. www.therealitalianpizzacompany.co.uk
Brighton’s pizza scene has exploded in a cloud of 00 flour in recent years, with a multitude of excellent pizza restaurants and pop-ups ‘popping up’ across the city. Having tried several of these in recent years (probably far too many), when I was offered the chance to try a new offering from some seasoned pizzaiolos I jumped at the chance. Antonio and Nicholas from The Real Italian Pizza Company serve a small but perfectly formed menu of authentic Italian pizzas, fresh from their wood fired brick oven, from their van based on Dyke Road near Seven Dials. With a range of meaty, veggie and even vegan options, there’s plenty to tickle even the most demanding of taste-buds. All of their pizzas are served on a tasty sour dough base which, according to Antonio, means that you’re getting your pizza fix with slightly fewer calories than your usual takeaway options. What could be better than that? As well as serving up the pizzas straight from their van to the hungry public, they now deliver through Deliveroo, Just Eat and Hungry House. Meaning you can get your authentic pizza fix straight to your doorstep. We were recently sent several of their most popular pizzas to the BN1 HQ to try out. Top of the stack was a veggie option; The Goats Cheese with tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, rosemary, red onion, sun-dried tomatoes and extra virgin olive oil (£9). The smooth goats cheese really set off the tangy sun-dried tomatoes.
isaac at MIGHTY FINE DINING
By Kathleen Johnston
The concentrated number of eateries in Brighton & Hove never ceases to amaze me. And yet, in the six years I have been dining out in our seaside town, I have never had a culinary experience quite like Isaac At. Serving up contemporary British food, this new fine dining concept offers so much more than just dinner. Eating here is an entire food event. The brainchild of 23-yearold head chef Isaac, the restaurant popped up on Gloucester Street last year. The focus is provenance, with a menu that showcases seasonal, fresh ingredients. The label attached to each menu describes the food as “inspired by the agricultural bounty of the Sussex Downs and beyond”, and if the food mileage list provided is anything to go by, they’ve totally embraced this ethos. The restaurant space itself mirrored the food that we were served. Small, elegant and yet un-fussy, the minimalist décor was light and modern. At the centre of the 32seat space is the open kitchen. Food is prepared in front of diners, giving guests and chefs the chance to interact. In keeping with the intimate and informal environment, each course is announced to the room by the chefs themselves. Upon arrival, the wonderful restaurant manager Sophia showed us to our seats at a communal table. Although we were a little hesitant about this ‘social’ aspect at first, it actually worked really well. Given that all of the guests are enjoying the same dishes from the set menu, chatting about it with other foodies made for a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. The effect was akin to being at a fabulous dinner party. We started the evening off with an aperitif, a glass of the local Ridgeview Merret
Bloomsbury Sparkling Brut (£8.50) for myself, and a Silly Moo Cider from East Sussex (£4.90) for my partner. Both were light and lovely. When the time for wine came around, the assistant chef himself, George T, came to aid us in making our decision. He suggested the Sedlescombe Biodynamic 2013 from East Sussex (a very reasonable £31, considering that’s the priciest white on offer), which turned out to be an excellent choice. The pre-starter was one amazing mouthful of pure deliciousness. Isaac’s take on a mini smoked salmon sandwich - complete with miniature cubes of cucumber - was delicate and expertly executed. Also worth mentioning was the freshly baked bread, served with slab of Ringmer butter. Next was the asparagus, egg yolk, pork scratching and locally foraged scurvy cress. The crunch of the pork scratching offset the richness of the yolk, and they both made a great accompaniment to the British asparagus. The cuttlefish, smoked apple, bok choi and cauliflower that followed was, I must admit, not really to my taste. Call me a philistine, but I like my squid-like fish battered and fried. However I can appreciate that the dish was very refined, beautifully presented and definitely rather different. Isaac At is all about showing diners new ways to enjoy unusual ingredients, and it was good to see the dynamic young chefs embrace experimentation. The main course of pork neck and belly, ratte potato, smoked broccoli and goosefoot was also a delight. We were a little disconcerted
when we first saw ‘goosefoot’ on the menu, but actually it was tasty cress, also locally foraged. The pork neck was cooked to perfection, beautifully pink and velvet soft, whilst the belly was salty and crisp, reminding me of a fantastic bit of bacon. The palate cleanser of blackberry and cucumber ice that followed did just that, as even after four courses we were still able to find room for dessert. The lavender ice cream, chocolate, lime and rapeseed was a pleasant surprise, given that lavender has the potential to taste like potpourri. However this was very subtle, and paired with the aerated chocolate it made a refined yet relatively light ending to our meal. I say ending, although it actually wasn’t, as we still squeezed in a final course of two charming little petits fours. All in all, this is the type of fine dining that even the most hardened of sceptics could get behind. The team had clearly meticulously considered every aspect of the evening and aside from the food itself, the service was outstanding. What makes Isaac At unusual is the pairing of high quality food with a casual environment; something Brighton had previously lacked. At £45 per head on a Friday evening and £47 on a Saturday, a night at Isaac At is also unlikely to break the bank. Isaac At is open for dinner on Friday and Saturday, and will be open for a three-course lunch (£29) from Sat 4 June. Isaac At is at 2 Gloucester Street, Brighton, BN1 4EW. www.isaac-at.com
