NOVEMBER So its autumn again, the clocks have gone back, the tourists have returned to whatever queue-less corner of the globe they inhabit, and my telly is imploring me to buy some stuff in time for Christmas already. And it must be Christmas soon, because the ever popular ice rink comes to the grounds of the Pavillion on Nov 10. This time Jamie Oliver’s Fabulous Feasts are in charge of the rinks pop-up restaurant and bar, so if watching over-confident drunk people fall on their arse wasn’t entertaining enough, then you can grab a world-class meal next door. From the graceful to the ferocious, Frankie Boyle - The Last Days of Sodom hits the Dome on Fri 16. You have been warned. To be honest, my granddad says far more offensive things and no-one wants to listen to him. The clubbing highlight of the month is undoubtedly The Stanton Warriors, with support from Rack’n’Ruin, shaking the foundations of Brighton Digital on Sat 17. Now the nights are drawing in there’s serious amounts of big live gigs this coming month. Down at The Old Market there’s a local showcase called Brighton’s Finest on Fri 30, featuring The Mojo Fins, with Shona Foster and Apples & Eve. These are some of the best acts in town in one bite-sized package. Lock your windows! Epoch-forming Madchester wrong ‘uns Happy Mondays come to the Brighton Centre on 30 Nov, not only that, but support duties are being performed by the rather fine 808 State Sound System. Lock up your daughters as well. Acid-tinged country-rock bad boys Alabama 3 return to Concorde2 on Sun 25. Also at the Concorde 2 is the divine Ms Jessie Ware on Mon 12. It should be a good time to catch her, as she is going to be huge. The Dome, in one month alone, has John Cooper Clarke appearing Thu 1 Nov, Ben Howard on Fri 2, Bat for Lashes on Sun 4, Joan Armatrading playing Mon 12, Squeeze coming Wed 21, The Human League playing Fri 23 and the mighty Don McLean on Tue 20. Phew! There’ll probably be a few of you making the trip out to Lewes to celebrate the execution of proto-terrorist Guido Fawkes at the best bonfire night anywhere. (Do be prepared to miss the last train back to civilisation. But don’t worry, you can still drunkenly walk back to the university and catch a bus home.) For those less up for travelling, or not enthusiastic about the dubious religious overtones of the Lewes celebrations, the Brighton Lions Firework Night will be held on the 5th at The PROBIZ County Ground, Hove. This is one of the best displays in the UK, not least because you can get a drink and seat with ease. So there it is... it’s a very busy month. So don’t stay in. Get out and about and save some on your heating bills.

Royal Pavilion’s Christmas Ice Rink 10th November – 20 January Adults £13/£10. Under 12s £8.50/£7 Get romantic this Christmas with the return of the Royal Pavilion’s Ice Rink. Take your loved ones or get together with friends and skate beneath the beautiful setting of Brighton Pavilion. Jamie Oliver’s Fabulous Feasts will create this year’s “pop-up” restaurant and bar perfect for watching the skating, stopping off for a drink or tucking into some hearty grub. Don’t worry there are penguin stabilisers for the kids and those who need a little practice.

Art Junky 10 24th– 25th November Phoenix Brighton. 11am – 5pm What better way to spend your day than browsing through more than 50 stalls of arts, crafts, bric-a-brac and more…well that is if you are a bargain hunter like me! Celebrating their tenth anniversary in style, the indoor market will host live music and fun surprises making a cheery atmosphere for everyone. With Christmas fast approaching there will be a café selling mince pies and mulled wine amongst other goodies including music and face painting. www.phoenixarts.org

MUSIC PREVIEWS

November is here and the as the weather gets chilly we got a hot month of music gigs for your delectation so take your pick of these and get along, get communal and stay warm!

By Brad Middleton BETH ORTON – 30 November, St George’s Church

SPIRITUALIZED – 6 November, Dome Corn Exchange

The delightful Beth Orton returns to Brighton for what promises to a truly great show in a wonderful venue. Orton has long been held as the leading British female folky for ages now and for good reason too. Around long before folk music became hip again Orton has been at this game since the last century and her catalogue has now grown to an immense size which should mean this show will present her playing her best and most famous songs. Exactly what you want!

This is going to be one of the highlights of the year as Jason Pierce returns with his mercurial Spiritualized project of grandiose experimentations and gospel opulence. Pierce has been at this music making lark for the best part of 4 decades now, starting way back in the eighties with the wonderfully dirgy, druggy and revolutionary Spaceman 3. Once that imploded though he immediately upped his game, bought in a whole plethora of new musicians and ideas and Spiritualized was born. They arguably reached their creative peak with the impossibly great ‘Ladies and Gentlemen we Are Floating in Space’ way back at the end of the last century but they have continued to beguile and mystify listeners ever since.

LAETITIA SADLER – 14 November, Sticky Mike’s

IAN McCULLOCH – 8 November, Concorde 2

The former singer and chanteuse of the archlyhip Stereloab returns to Brighton with more shimmering goodness and wonderful French pop (I ain’t talking about Johnny Halliday either!) quirkiness. I was saddened to miss her last time but heard good reports of her show earlier this year at the Green Door and this time around people will know what to expect so tickets may be harder to get hold of unless you’re really quick off your marks.

Another former lead singer of another formerly great English band whose solo endeavours have yet to live up to those of his past. Echo & The Bunnymen were one of the top English bands of the 1980’s and were for a time considered the equals of The Smiths but as the years have progressed they have fallen off the radar a bit. It’s a shame too as their early albums, in particular 1984’s Ocean Rain, were really great.

THE CREAKING CHAIR – 15 November, Green Door

HAPPY MONDAYS – 30 November, Brighton Centre

It’s not all nostalgia this month as we also have a hot up-and-coming band from this town playing a notable gig in their relative short history. The Creaking Chair have just released their debut single through Bouffant Records, which by the way is available as a free download from their website, and it’s great. Quiet, introspective with moments of epic psychedelia it is a winner all round. Tonight my young friends support Grasscut so it should be a pretty wild show.

This month seems to be offering us Brightonians a bit of a nostalgia fest and this time we have the Mondays coming to town to represent the halcyon days of Madchester. The still controversial but now mostly clean-living lads and Rowena from the seedy streets of Salford pretty much typified all that was great about the Manchester scene of the time but unfortunately with the ever-growing intake of chemicals their music fell off towards the end of their original incarnation. However their classic songs, (think ‘Hallelujah’), were just that, bone-fide classics and this will give the audience a chance to forget their daily troubles in a blur of lights and dancing.

CHALLENGE PETE: the cinnamon one

In our continuation of Challenge Pete, we decided to see if Pete would try some school-boy prank style dares! Having never tried these ourselves, and after last month’s XXX chilli burger killer, our fearless reporter Matt Russell took on Pete in two challenges. The first challenge was the Mentos and Diet Coke challenge, which was a complete anticlimax. The idea is eat some Mentos, drink Diet Coke and keep some Coke in your mouth too, but not only did it not work properly, there was no self combustion that some YouTube videos claim. More of a slightly fizzy and dribbling mess. Maybe the American Mentos contain more chemicals!? Next was the Cinnamon challenge. The idea behind this is to eat a huge table spoon of Cinnamon, swallow and see who can last the longest without spluttering and coughing up clouds of Cinnamon! Cinnamon is super fine and coats every airway instantly making it impossible to swallow, or breathe for that matter. This was a lot more entertaining! Both Matt and Pete took huge spoonfuls of the brown powdered spice at the same time and after exactly 10 seconds both coughed up huge plumes of Cinnamon. Funny... YES! And stupid.

I must point out that doing any of these stunts or silly pranks is not a good idea and we do not take any responsibility for anyone trying to mimic them. If you have any ideas, or want to challenge Pete, please send to info@bn1magazine.co.uk. Try and keep them realistic as we don’t want another near death experience! See the Cinnamon Challenge video at www.bn1magazine. co.uk If you missed the XXX Chilli Burger Challenge last month you have to check it out at www.bn1magazine.co.uk. It is one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a long time. Images: Oli Lyons

MUSIC REVIEWS JENNIFER LEFT The DIGGORY EP out Nov

The Diggory EP was great already, but by the time Jennifer Left gets to the chorus of her delicious cover of New Order’s ‘Temptation’, it started to bewitch me. Displaying all the insight and mastery of a more established artist, Left’s delicate vocals disclose an emotional depth that rises above simple sentimentality. This music sounds pure and good. It’s a delicate and balanced gem of an EP, which left me wanting to hear more from this talented young lady. (SR) Live dates: 08/11/12 Brighton The Blind Tiger, United Kingdom Time: 7:00pm. DJ YODA New Album CHOP SUEY out 5th Nov

Now here’s a man not afraid to wear his influences on his sleevenotes. With a roll-call of guest artists longer than a Facebook guestlist, DJ Yoda finally unleashes his Chop Suey album. He’s taken time to get here, but it’s a rewarding and remarkably sample-light piece of work, which eschews the mixer-shredding anarchy of his live shows. But what does remain of his trademark style is a euphoric melange of his eclectic taste in music. In essence, this is an ingenious, grown-up, Hip-Hop album, which will help him grab the attention of the mainstream audience. It’s been a long time coming… (SR)

APPLES & EVE DIONYSUS EP out Now Folky violins, waltzing accordions, stomping country, eastern european flourishes. What’s not to like about Apples and Eve’s new E.P? Well, as it turns out, not much. A wonderfully varied collection of tunes crossing many genres produced to marvellous effect by the rather great Al Scott (Levellers, Oysterband). From the ephemeral campfires of gypsy fairgrounds to the stark plains of the mid-west, these tunes truly evoke tangible atmospheres. This is an E.P that will appeal to fans of old school folk through to world music listeners and acoustic-country appreciators. Highly recommended. Head on down to the Old Market on November 30th for a night of awesome bands. From local indie faves The Mojo Fins, through to the haunting and dramatic Shona Foster and the incredible Apples and Eve, a band fast emerging on the folk/ alternative circuit as an act not to miss. dj yoda When I phoned DJ Yoda on a Monday afternoon I half expected him to be spending his day like any other superstar DJ, perhaps relaxing by the pool or enjoying a spot of big-game hunting…

“Monday is almost my weekend, I’m always traveling on Fridays and Saturdays,” he cheerfully tells me. “But, I’ve actually been working all day. With the album coming out, lots of people want exclusive mixes.” Perhaps not then, but if he’s put anything like as much effort into this new album as he does his live shows, then there might not be a lot of time in the week to spare at the moment. “What I wanted to do was put an album together that was like my DJ sets. Everything has the backbone of Rap and HipHop, but there are elements of Eighties Pop through to more current clubby stuff.” It seems like a direct evolution from his 2006 frenetic debut album, The Amazing Adventures of DJ Yoda, which featured guest spots from Biz Markie, Sway and The Jungle Brothers, but surely it can’t be a simple case of more of the same? “I’ve been trying to cut back on the samples a little. A lot of the process involved starting with a sample and building a track around that, then completely removing it.” This new album, one of the most anticipated of the year (for those in the know) features an ever eclectic line-up of collaborators, including Sway, Action Bronson, Greg Nice, comedian Michael Winslow and Roots Manuva. But for a man that works with so many people, is it possible to pick a favourite co-conspirator from these sessions? “If you made me pick someone, I’d have to say Scroobius Pip. I get on very well with him. He’s really funny, intelligent… and reliable,” he laughs.

Coming from a solid foundation as a Hip-Hop DJ, Yoda has evolved a unique style, which now cheerily stretches the limits of turntablism, throwing myriad music genres into a one party-starting stream of bass-heavy consciousness. But how does someone end up with such an (obviously slightly obsessive) interest in music and all its different forms? “My parents both worked in the music industry, so I was surrounded by music before I even went to school. My Dad kept his record collection in my bedroom, so I was literally surrounded by his records. “As time went on, the music I was listening to as a kid had a lot of scratching in. So I would pretend to scratch and mess around with the records. I broke my parents Hi-Fi by doing that, so I eventually saved up and bought turntables. It all happened organically and slowly like that.” In a live situation DJ Yoda duly exploits those early learnt skills to create an often phenomenal audio-visual experience. He’s been busy using his position in the DJ scene to pioneer a new art form, by blending in visuals on top of his vibrant DJ sets. “The setup for it is really simple these days it’s just two turntables, a mixer and a laptop. Any kind of technology that I can add to that, if it brings something creative to the table, then I’m up for it. But I don’t like to make things too complex.” Judging by the sheer complexity of his shows, it would seem that Yoda spends an inordinate amount of time collecting film clips and checking out new music for his shows. “That’s what I do during the week. I re-

ally like to have some thought put into it, then do something with some skill on the night. “ This approach to his art, together with some fierce playlist decisions, encouraged Q Magazine to declare him ‘one of the ten DJs to see before you die’ and Hip Hop Connection to vote him ‘one of the top three DJs in the world’. But is there any other music apart from Hip-Hop that would allow him to express himself so clearly? “What appeals to me about it is it’s the only form of music that enables you to take all your different music influences, mix them up and make something new out of it. “I was really inspired by something I heard another DJ say, where he said that you could give him any record, whatever it is, he’d strip it and make it sound good. I just like that idea that you can make something good out of everything. “That’s the idea behind the name of the album as well. Chop Suey, the original dish that Chinese immigrants made in America, was exactly that thinking. You take whatever is available and you make something that is true to yourself out of it.” DJ Yoda’s Chop Suey Tour hits Brighton Coalition on 1st Dec. Chop Suey, the album, is released on 5th Nov. www.djyoda.co.uk By Stuart Rolt

mean poppa lean the final showdown

We were saddened this month to hear of the impending demise of BN1 favourites Mean Poppa Lean. After brightening up the city with their extravagant attire and their super-funked-up grooves, they’ve decided to call it a day. So we whipped out the tissues and black veils and went to ask them… WHY???!!

Ok, so what’s the real reason for the band splitting up? Wow, you guys really get straight to the point, don’t you? If I were to tell you I would have to kill you. Let me assure you, however, that we are all still very much in bromance with each other and the band achieved something very special which none of us will ever forget. What are you each going to do with your time now? Write novels, start businesses, make high-end craftwork, pursue international travel and create a great deal more music. What are the high and low points of being in the band? Being paid to go abroad and get hammered is pretty incredible, as well as being sure that you’ll have an amazing laugh and make a difference to somebody’s night at every gig. Some bands never get the opportunity to play for heaving crowds of people who love their music so we’re blessed to have done that. The downside is that it didn’t

last forever! Is there any chance of a glorious Status Quo style reunion in 2022? There is a slim chance of a reunion but I’m not sure how much like the Quo it will be. They played Glastonbury a few years ago alongside Spinal Tap and judging by the backstage footage the parody is nowhere near as funny as the real deal! In that way, I suppose we are a bit like Quo... Which member of the band is most likely to wash up in Paris recording an album of Serge Gainsbourg covers? Our new trumpet player Ed Prosek, without a doubt! However he is destined to have an amazing career as a singer/ songwriter before hitting his Je t’aime phase. Google his name and watch the video for ‘California’, it’s incredible. Who would play each of you in the inevitable film based upon your career? We have played this game in our van many times. Danny Bass would be played by Woody Harrelson, Christian by

Jack Black, Tommy B by Danny Dyer, CDogg by Owen Wilson (in a ginger wig), Aramis by Justin Bieber and Ed by Jesse Eisenberg. How has the local music scene changed since you started? So much but not enough. When we started out we perceived it as being very stale; most of the bands were indie acts with very little to distinguish them from each other so we wanted to subvert that by being colourful and exciting to watch. As we came up the rankings a lot of bands who grew with us turned out to be absolutely incredible but nearly all of them have split up now. When I look at the new crop of Brighton bands it’s hard to see a marquee headliner who can fill big venues anymore.

BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 15 ]

mean poppa lean Which local bands are the most exciting now? As a caveat to my previous answer, although there are less marquee headliners there are still great bands. Thedealwasforthediamond, Soccer96, Skirts, Ed Prosek, Alex Adams, Holy Vessels, Lovepark and Tiny Dragons come to mind. Last time we spoke you were about to tour Europe! Any funny stories? Fit to print?! On the last jaunt to Norway we partied hard; Christian was treating a box of wine like it was Simba and he was Rafiki, holding it up to the sun and singing Ladysmith Black Mambazo in front of hundreds of people in the town centre. You had to be there.

Are you going to go out with a bang, or a whimper, at your last show? What do you think!? Have we ever been known to do anything with a whimper?! The final show on Friday 23rd November will feature not one but TWO Mean Poppa Lean sets... we will be joined on stage by former band mates Rob and Grills to skip down memory lane and revisit some old songs before trading them for Aramis and Ed to play our latest batch of tunes. The Haunt kicks out at 10, but the 200 lucky people who arrive to the main show earliest will receive a stamp for Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar, where you will experience An Evening With Mean Poppa Lean & Friends; stories, songs, memories and a chance to ask us those burning questions that

have been pent up inside you for so long. Only £7 for the lot and there’s a handful of tickets online! What do you think your epitaph should read? Here lies Mean Poppa Lean, who dressed to impress, played to express and drunk to excess. 2005-2012. Mean Poppa Lean’s final show is on 23rd November at The Haunt // 7-10pm £5/7 Tickets available from Resident & online from WeGotTickets

polica By Megan Tatum

Hailed as the ‘best band I’ve ever heard’ by Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, four-piece band Poliça will arrive in Brighton this month amidst heady expectations. Formed just last year the group from Minneapolis have enjoyed critical acclaim for their debut album Give you the Ghost, counting Prince and Jay-Z amongst their fans. BN1 catches up with the group ahead of their performance this month at The Concorde2. Will this be your first time performing in Brighton? Have you had any tips as to how to spend your time here? We’ve never been to Brighton before. None of us. We haven’t received any tips on things to do while we’re in town yet, but always looking for good ideas. Brighton has a pretty big reputation for nightlife, so hopefully someone can point us in that direction. From your upcoming tour dates it looks like you’ll be travelling constantly – how do you cope with such a packed schedule? I guess you just have to get used to time sort of stopping while you’re on the road. We all wish we had a little more time at home this year, but also recognize that we’re getting some great opportunities this year. Opportunities that we may never have again. Remembering that helps us get motivated and excited about being away from home so much. There’s a break coming up though, and knowing that helps a lot as well. We’ll have most of the winter to be back home in freezing cold Minneapolis. How would you describe your sound to someone who hasn’t heard your music? We like to describe it by explaining what’s going on musically. We

have two drummers, so it is highly percussive. Beats are a big part of our sound, especially when mixed with the electronic beats coming from Abelton, which is another big part of our sound. Pulsing electronics and swirly synths. We have no guitar, so our bass player Chris Bierden gets to play out a lot more than usual, resulting in super active bass parts. All of this is covered in Channy’s highly effected, yet incredibly soulful singing. Does that make sense? I hear Jay z posted a link to your single Lay Your Cards Out on his blog and Prince turned up at one of your gigs – how does it feel to have such musical legends as fans? We can’t really confirm whether Jay Z actually posted it, or if his blogger did. I can say that hearing something like that can be momentarily inspiring, but it doesn’t even come close to the feeling of having an entire venue of people come to see us play on the other side of the globe. Even if it’s 200 people in Munich. You’ve only been performing as a group together for such a short time – is the incredible response you’ve had a little overwhelming? I wouldn’t say it’s overwhelming, but it certainly has been thrilling. Perhaps if we had all just recently started playing music it would be overwhelming, but we’ve all been

playing shows in other projects for many years, so it feels more like a very fortunate increase in exposure and productivity. We’ve also kept it very simple by not bringing in much stage production yet, and not hiring a big crew to follow us around. That helps make it feel like this one big trip we are on together in our tight little team. There seems to be some disagreement about the origins of ‘Poliça’ – what does it mean? And what was the inspiration for the name? I believe the word first popped up as a song was accidentally saved as Poliza.wav. Channy thought that was a nice sounding word, and found out that it was similar to Polisa, which is a mom-english word for Policy. That struck a chord with her, as it seemed like the band was coming together with a strict policy of productivity, with pretty specific guidelines and intentions. I later remarked about how the word had little-to-no connotations in our lives, so it felt like a proper name. Like naming a child, Channy thought. The decision to use a “c” instead of an “s” was because it looks better in print. Who are your own music idols? Who would you most like to collaborate with? We actually dont really share the same idols, which is something I

think we benefit from. It’s a pretty wide mix of musical backgrounds within the group. With that said, our scene back home is very collaborative, and we constantly work with other people in Minneapolis on all kinds of stuff. For Polica, we’d probably be down to work with all kinds of folks we are fans of. We generally like making music a whole lot, so the idea of more recorded projects is always a nice thought. If you couldn’t do music, what do you think your day job would be? I would probably have stuck with doing carpentry, which is something I very much enjoy doing. Building things has always been very fun for me. It’s hard to imagine a life without playing music, though. Even if we weren’t making any money, we’d still be doing this. In some ways it would be easier to do if we weren’t making a job out of it, because we’d just be back home, playing every now and again, doing what we’ve all been doing for the last 5 or more years. Touring has introduced new challenges for us, but overall it’s enriched our lives in a way I couldn’t have

imagined. What are your hopes for the band 12 months from now? Hopefully we’ll be in the aftermath of releasing another, better album by then! We hope to evolve and grow as a band a little bit, and generally be better at our craft. Basically, we want to be better at driving this machine by then, so these new challenges I spoke of are no longer there, and we can destroy shows night after night. What do you miss most about Minneapolis? What is the city famous for? We all miss our friends and family first and foremost. Coincidentally, Minneapolis is famous for people generally being good to each other. They call it Minnesota-Nice. While this is up for debate, we do come from very large, tight-knit groups of friends. Sometimes the whole scene back home can feel like one big odd family with many distant relatives. So when we’re out on the road and reading about all the great times people are having back home (releasing albums, playing memorable shows, etc) we

get a little bummed we can’t be there to celebrate. There are wonderful events going on here locally, all of the time. But it’s good to know that there will be plenty going on when we get home as well. Who has your vote – Obama or Romney? Obama. This question isn’t actually that simple, though. In fact, the question itself sort of explains the problem the US has. It really is either one of these two, with no other option at all. I’m not even endorsing a 3rd candidate option, because that in itself brings up many other problems with the way our system is set up. For example, Obama would probably be our second choice if we had run-off voting. What I am sure of, is that Mitt Romney and the others who share his agenda, are trying to do awful things to our country. We all have many complaints about the way Obama has conducted his policies, but Mitt Romney and the right wing of the US need to be put down. Hopefully forever. Polica at The Concorde2, 6th Nov

THEATRE GUIDE Man, that’s properly cold out there! So for this month I’ll also be grading each theatre’s heating quality for your convenience. Out at Shoreham’s Ropetackle Arts Centre (Heating Rating – temperate) there’s a performance of Caruso and The Monkey House Trial on Fri 2 Nov. When a celebrated Tenor is accused of groping women in Central Park Zoo his career is placed in jeopardy. As well as a salacious mix of celebrity, scandal, monkeys and opera, this interactive show also allows the audience to piece together evidence and decide if the maestro is guilty or not. At The Nightingale (HR - most agreeable) on Thu 29 is The Dressing Book, which follows a socialite who records which dresses she wears for each event in her ‘dressing book’ – and the men she encounters while wearing them. In the Studio Theatre next door (HR – Snug and pleasant) on Fri 16 - Sat 17 is Stories from an Invisible Town. A warm-hearted, fantastical, physical and playful recollection of one man’s family stories, as we find out what happens when Hugh returns to his childhood home in Llangefni to help his mum move out, and the memories start flooding back. You can pop over the road to the Theatre Royal (HR - Toasty) for another packed month of shows.

Jonny & the Baptists Komedia, 9th Nov

Lee Nelson Theatre Royal, 11th Nov

Joining the seventh annual Brighton Comedy Fringe are comedy blues band Jonny & the Baptists appearing at Upstairs at Three and Ten on Friday November 9th. Tackling all the big issues from library closure to loneliness and the decline of the British pub, the group have been hailed as “rousing and hilarious” whilst esteemed Edinburgh Festivals Magazine claimed “It rarely gets better than this”. With accolades like that it’s hard to refuse this 8pm show with tickets starting from £7, promising a silly, satirical, and occasionally sexy evening.

Since appearing on the BBC in his self-titled comedy show Lee Nelson’s Well Good Show Simon Brodkin has been a controversial character comedian, leaving some shocked that the taxpayer funded broadcaster would commission such a left-field programme. As Liam Tucker of TV Pixie wrote, ‘Lee Nelson’s Well Good Show is less ‘well good’ and more a pile of irredeemable crap littered with witless demi-jokes, all limping along on the questionable talent of Brodkin. However his high-energy, visual characters suit the stage far better and the show is worth a look when appearing at the Theatre Royal this month.

FILM A SIGHT FOR GORE EYES By Wayne Imms

Over the past couple of years, Brighton-based Ben Wheatley has emerged as one of the UK’s leading and prolific filmmakers. Last year’s magnificent Kill List followed Ben’s acclaimed, but somewhat unseen, Down Terrace, a gritty thriller filmed around this city. This month sees the release of his third feature, Sightseers.

Prior to those, the forty-year old, who was raised in Essex, contributed to Channel 4’s Modern Toss, based on the darkly comedic cartoons, Armando Ianucci’s futuristic satire Time Trumpet, and BBC sitcom Ideal, starring Johnny Vegas. Kill List was definitely one of my favourite films of last year. The dark thriller, which was horrific at times, focused on a pair of hit men embarking on one last job which led to very sinister and deadly consequences. Despite much critical acclaim, it made little impact upon the box office. I had the great pleasure of attending a preview screening of Sightseers a couple of weeks ago. Since first hearing of it, I knew that this was a film that I eagerly wanted to see. Executively produced by Edgar Wright, best known for directing Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, Sightseers follows the evil exploits of a serial-killing couple on a caravan holiday. The film was superbly written by its leading actors, Steve Oram and Alice Lowe. As rather expected from Wheatley, it’s a very dark and sinister comedy with some great funny lines. Admittedly, it’s not for everyone, partly due to some moments of gore. Sightseers looks great, because of the cinematography and the stunning landscapes depicted of the beautiful countryside. It’s a very quirky film; unlike any that you may have seen for a long time. To an extent, it could be described as a horrific romantic comedy with gripping performances, especially from the main characters. Romcoms don’t appeal to me, but this very much did.

I tracked down its director, Ben Wheatley, who gave me a brief insight into making the film. He’s clearly a man of few words. WI: Sightseers is your third feature and the first you didn’t write. Did the experience of making it make a difference this was written by others (Alice Lowe and Steve Oram)? BW: It was different from making the other two films. But then every film has been very different. We used a lot of improvisation and Amy Jump (who co wrote Kill List) had a pass at the script. So in that respect it was business as usual I enjoyed the film very much. It’s very dark, quirky, funny, and sinister. How enjoyable was it to make, and

BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 29 ]

was it a challenge at all? I love film making, but it’s always a challenge. Sightseers in particular had a lot of travelling and extreme weather. My other two films had been set mainly indoors where it rains less. For you, what is the best part of the whole process with a film; shooting it on location, editing or any other aspect? I love editing. It’s all the fun of film making with hardly any of the time pressure How important is humour within your work? I try to bring realism to my films; humour is part of life, so it’s very important. And the importance of music in your films? You book-

ended Sightseers with two versions of Tainted Love and made excellent use of Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s The Power of Love, and also included the song Season of the Witch. I love music in films and I try to have a scheme for each of my projects. In Sightseers it was about cover versions to tie into the themes of one person copying and consuming another.

Sightseers is released on November 30th, and will be screened at the Duke of York’s from this date. There will be a screening at Cine-City on the 16th, held at the Duke of York’s, followed by a Q&A with Ben Wheatley.

THE rare brand christmas market DECEMBER 7th & 8TH - BRIGHTON DOME By Megan Tatum

A TEAM of business savvy part-time mums will be pioneering unique Christmas gifts this December by hosting the Rare Brands Christmas Market in Brighton for the first time. The event, which will take place on the 7th and 8th December at the iconic Corn Exchange in the city centre, aims to introduce unique and creative products to the city as an antidote to the colourless chains that so often dominate the high-street. Founder, Emma Schwarz, left her life in London for a rural existence in Chichester but found herself disappointed at the shopping available outside the capital. “In London there is a great mix of independent and chain stores but outside the capital there is too often boring high-streets which lead people to rely on online shopping”. Sensing the rare opportunity to rebuild a career around the time pressures of being a parent she seized upon the gap in the high-street and developed the Rare Brands Market providing a platform for emerging brands that needed the chance to engage face-to-face with their customers. “Our key criterion is that they must offer a unique product but other than that they might be designers, merchants or brands looking to start out,” Emma explained. Huge effort is spent on sourcing stylish local and regional products with their own story to tell, ranging from children's toys, clothes and jewellery to foods and wines and the Brighton market will be no exception. Amongst those selling their products are Swedish business partners, Anki Josefsson and Anneli Sandström, with their quirky and romantic typographic art printed on a collection of prints, tea towels, cards and more. The Brighton-based pair at One Must Dash moved from a background in copy writing and graphic design to print art with a twist and their signature image, strangely enough, is a moustache. “It is the true essence of our idea – decorative and a little bit funny”, the girls explained. Joining them are Bookish, a Sussex-based company who go beyond the traditional uses of the written word and create stunning aesthetic literary designs from pages, ideas, quotes and just about anything to do with books. The pag-

es of Kafka's Metamorphosis find themselves as a brooch in the form of the gigantic insect into which Gregor Samsa is transformed, whilst scrabble tiles develop a brand-new purpose spelling out 'Love' on a ladies' blouse. The Christmas event will feature these and many other unique products perfect for ticking people off that everexpanding Christmas list and all set in the midst of a winter wonderland. “We've had great success with the event in other towns and so we're bringing it to Brighton to provide people with a range of high-end, niche products that can be really difficult to come across otherwise,” said Emma. LENDERISE By Stuart Rolt

Fed up with having to buy something you’ll only use once, or despairing of storing something indispensible which gets utilised only once a year? If so, then a new web-based rental platform could be the thing to solve your problem. Lenderise is a new website that aims to revolutionise the way we act as consumers, which launched in Brighton last month. “There’s a whole trend based around collaborative consumption, the idea of people having access to products rather than having to own them,” Toby Gunton, Lenderise’s co-founder, told us. “With eBay, it enabled an individual to sell off something that had become shoved away in their loft. For us, rather than selling that item once, you could create a small income by renting that item again and again.” Providing a new way to make and

save money, Lenderise lets you rent out or hire those items that get used rarely, but are always needed. In short, you search for what you want to borrow and find people in your area who have what you want. You pay a small fee to the lender and the item is yours for the time you need it. That’s it, in all its glorious simplicity.

“I woke up at 4am one morning with this idea in my head. It’s so obvious. Why isn’t there a platform where people can just rent the thing or skills they have to people that are local to them?” Founded by Toby and colleague Ben Long, Lenderise is based on the idea

of communities working together, enabling people to shift from owning to simply having easy access to products. “We share an ambition to change the way people consume, if you look at a model like ebay, it was created at a time when buying and selling was everything. This platform is being created at a time when renting is becoming a more common idea.” Offering all the safeguards you’d expect from a website of this type, with measures in place to ensure fair and safe lending, there are also plans to offer insurance on lends in the near future. “I think there are a lot of driving forces behind it. Obviously the economy is a really big factor, because people simply don’t have the disposable income they might have enjoyed a few years ago. “There is more practical thinking to it. If you live in the South-East, then

such as Groupon, where large groups “It may well beyour that we find that At Lenderise.com you could turn of people pool their money and reeveryone starts using it for tools, but ceive a into discount on Anotherincome at this stage we’ll it quite wide everyday things a services. regular bykeep simply is City Car Club where members pay in terms of what people could lend subscription in return for cheap car and borrow.”& Hove renting to alocal people in Brighton

One particular example of this new trend is group discount schemes,

hire, or Spotify where you don’t buy CDs anymore you just rent access to the music. At the moment there is no telling what most people will access using N D ŗ it, Lenderise. BrowsingEthrough there’s almost everything y on offer, from snow shovels to PA systems, tools to yoga lessons. W

there are some of the smallest newbuild houses in the whole of Europe, so if you want to go out and buy a roof-box then you simply haven’t got anywhere to put it. “There is an environmental angle as well. People are aware that if they buy something that sits in their loft not getting used for a year then they are using up valuable resources. It makes sense just to share one item, rather than having to manufacture hundreds of them. Collaborative consumption, named by Time Magazine as one of the 10 Ideas That Will Change The World, is simply people across the globe changing the way they think about money. People are trying to save more, spending in different ways, and looking for ways to make the most of their purchases.

It is hard to predict whether collaborative consumption is just a fad that will fizzle out when the economy restarts, or if it’s the dawn of a new consumer age that will cause many corporations to have to rethink their business models. Whatever the case, there is enormous potential for Lenderise to establish itself as a useful part of a consumer culture that’s had to reassess itself.

O “We honestly don’t www.Lenderise.com ŗ B know O RR where it’s going to go. We’ve tried to build a platform that is as flexible as www.lenderise.com possible and will let people Lend & Borrow locally list just about anything.

THE DIRT With Mark Ede

God of Hell Fire. It seems my friend Ross McCracken (whose nether regions may be just about recovered from his London to Gibraltar charity bike ride) is apparently now involved with Arthur Brown. Ross has asked me to the initial meeting which means I'm now netted and involved too. It's my own fault; I encouraged him. I thought any 60's icon and darling of the young psychedelic crowd, who has played, in recent years, main stage at Glastonbury, Meltdown as curated by another Brighton based icon, Dave Gilmour, and worked with Alice Cooper has to be worth a punt. I'll keep you informed. I suspect this could be anything but a boring ride! Meanwhile at BiGiAM towers, things kick on a pace for our main artist Jo Harman who has just been booked by Live Nation to appear in front of an aggregate of about 10,000 people over 3 shows in some of Holland's most prestigious theatres opening for, firstly, The Cranberries and thereafter, Don McLean. All good you might think, but there's a catch. These have to be solo shows. The last time Jo did a solo show was probably at open mics when she was studying at BIMM and, spoiled by the fact that her own band members thereafter have been generally genuinely world class musicians, she probably hasn't picked up a guitar since. With seemingly the entire Dutch media and industry types having been alerted to Jo's talents, no pressure then on these, her first ever, European gigs. Hey ho, better this pressure than merely plugging away at the Brighton circuit (not that there's anything wrong with that circuit of course) perhaps, but you get my drift. Elsewhere, these overseas shenanigans mean I'm spending more time in Shoreham on things like Skype, and less in Brighton at my usual hangouts; places like the Latest Musicbar, although I'm sure Ruth, Emma et al are getting on just splendidly without me. The Kit Kats might be going out of date though, seeing I haven't been there to keep the stock turning over. All this absence (and I'm writing for a magazine called BN1, after all) isn't helped by my ex major label A&R brother opening a cafe (imaginatively called 'Shoreham by Tea'), since cafes are my well known addiction as my waistline will testify. I was thinking of re branding this column as 'Postcards from Shoreham' or some such but that's not really going to cut it is it? No, there is nothing else for it, the onset of Winter or not, I shall have to brush the dust off my pushbike and pedal into town again and reacquaint myself on a much more regular basis with the UK's most eclectic and exciting City that is Brighton Town (sic). Well, if Ross can pedal 1500 miles plus to Gibraltar, then surely 6 miles on the flat is not beyond me? Hmmm.....I'll think about that one. Till next time, keep it steady and (maybe) see you in town soon.
