OCTOBER 2012

An air of melancholy permeates this month of October with the devastating news that electropop duo and murderous despot Bashar al-assad’s favourite band LMFAO are to take a hiatus. However, it’s not all doom an’ gloom. With legends like Ray Davies OBE and Public Enemy in town, a formidable line up at Shakedown Festival, the prospect of 2000 zombies walking through town on the 20th (presumably having killed themselves after the LMFAO news), and Dave’s Brighton Comedy Festival hitting local venues. There are a multitude of events to take your mind off the fact that you will definitely get flu this month.

OCTOBER So here we are, a month further down the line, and the only people smiling are those selling over-priced wet weather gear. At least we should be grateful that the city is still visible to new iPhone users, for now, unless it gets washed away by all this rain. But Brighton isn’t facing the slow inexorable slide towards winter without at least attempting to fire up our rain-soaked imaginations just a little. Dave's Brighton Comedy Festival sets up shop in the city in October, utilising venues around the centre to bring us the very best in mirth-based entertainment. Elsewhere on in this issue we’re giving you a small sample of what’s in store for you there. It’s going to be a good one. There’s a plethora of musical stylings to keep your spirits up this coming month. The original British singer/songwriter Ray Davies OBE rocks the Dome on the 16th. The Dome will also be seeing an appearance on the 29th from the resurgent hardrhyming, establishment-scaring juggernaut that is Public Enemy. Ever noticed that hype-man Flavor Flav’s comedy clock around his neck is always ten minutes fast? They don’t know what the time is; they know what the time is going to be. More legends show up at Digital, as Hospitality hits its 7th birthday on the 13th. They’ve taken Drum and Bass to new heights of recognition in the last few years and this celebration bash will show us why. But don’t pack away that climate-appropriate festival gear just yet.......there’s one last hurrah in store for the more hardened ravers amongst us. A stellar line is coming to Stanmer Park for Shakedown Festival on the 6th October. Dizzee Rascal, Chase and Status, Pro Green and Knife Party lead a solid line-up of electronic music heavyweights. If you find yourself confronted in the city centre by a huge army of the undead on the 20th, don’t panic, it’s just the annual Brighton Zombie Walk, where around 2,000 pranksters spend their Saturday scaring the crap out of the tourists. That allows an unusual, but somehow appropriate, segue into mentioning the legendary Joan Rivers’ show this month. She’ll be lighting up the Brighton Centre on the 20th with tales of her glamorous lifestyle and some quality un-PC bitching. After the last political party conference, it’ll be reassuring to see someone on that stage saying what they truly think.

Beach of the Dead 20th October, 3pm Starts at West Pier (old Paddling pool) Watch the dead rise from beneath their graves to wander the streets of Brighton. In its sixth year running, thousands of lost souls come out to celebrate Halloween in the most gruesome of costumes! With each year bloodier than the last, we’ve seen zombie brides, the walking dead and werewolves walking the streets of Brighton. If that isn’t enough to scare you senseless, prepare yourself for the 80s Zombie Prom after party at Concorde 2, just £3 entry.

Beatsworkin presents 5 Years of Cecille... 12th October The Haunt, £10/£12 ,10pm The size and reputation of Beatsworkin parties just keeps growing. Now, in their new home at The Haunt, they’re holding a bash to celebrate five fantastic years of Cecille Records on 12th Oct. Alongside guest appearances from Cecille chaps Nick Curly and Alex Celler, there’ll be a live show from Techno producer (and trained sculptor) Glimpse. As you’d expect, there’ll be some able support from Beatsworkin themselves aka Jamie Bawn and Chris Eaton. As if all this deep, minimal house and techno loveliness wasn’t enough, it’s also Beatsworkin third birthday. There’s going to some sore (but very happy) heads in the morning.

MUSIC PREVIEWS

October is here but fear not because we’ve got a shed-load of gigs to get you out the confines of your cold flat and in some cases out of your mind. Rest assured though, these shows will warm the cockles of even the hardiest soul.

By Brad Middleton ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE - Blind Tiger, October 20th, £11adv.

DYLAN CARLSON - The Hope, October 18th, £9adv.

The loudest band I have ever seen and trust me that is something coming from someone who has seen the likes of Earth, Sunno))) and the Melvins. These Japanese psychedelic nut-jobs have released so many albums it is impossible to keep track of but there live shows are simply balls-out, amps to 11 and hair. They rock like no other band on the planet and if you think you can stomach it get down to this show, it’ll blow your mind!

A legend from a legendary band finally comes out from behind the smoke and noise of the colossal Earth and offers up some weirdy folky stuff for our delectation however don’t expect to be able to get a copy of his epic tape-only release ‘Edward Kelley’s Blues’ as only 400 were made and they sold out instantly. This new project moves away from the shuddering noise and doom/ drone of Earth into a magical world of fairies and goblins and English mythology. This is going to be interesting.

ROLO TOMASSI - The Haunt, October 22nd, £10adv.

TOY - Coalition, October 27th, £8adv.

I for one never really understood why this band got all the mainstream press attention they did when they first hit us with their insane punk racket all those years ago. It wasn’t that I didn’t like them, I did and still do, but I didn’t understand why the likes of NME did. Anyway earlier in the year I got to see them again, after many years, and they were still great. If you like your punk fast and direct with short songs and a great girl vocalist/screamer then get along to this, it’ll be ace!

If what you’re searching for is the new ‘next big thing’ then this show couldn’t have come at a better time. With their debut album still being raved about by critics all over the world, it was only released at the start of last month, this is a prime chance to catch a band on the way up. It is doubtful that we shall see them play a venue as intimate as Coalition for a long while, if ever, and by the time you read this it will probably have sold out but you never know. Get along to your local ticket outlet and fast!

SPARKS - Brighton Dome, October 25th, £20adv.

EIGHTIES MATHCBOX B-LINE DISASTER - Concorde 2, October 30th, £11adv.

What can one say that hasn’t already been said about the legend that is Sparks? Well this tour has reduced them to just a two-piece and they have totally re-jigged all their classic songs so… what are you waiting for? A legendary band plays all their best songs, think This Town Ain’t Big Enough For the Both of Us, in a way you’ve never heard before. Well?

Legends of the Brighton rock’n’roll scene these boys have been doing this now for the whole of this century! Founded on January 1st, 2000 they retain the vibe of a band formed at a party who just want to have fun and make a fearsome racket and that is exactly what they do. A true Brighton institution now and I for one am glad to see them back.

CHALLENGE PETE: Eat the XXX Chilli Burger at Burger Off!

Well, we’ve all heard the stories about the famous XXX Chilli burger. The one that’s so HOT it comes with an 18 certificate and you need to sign a disclaimer form before you attempt it! So, with this in mind, BN1 ‘Challenged Pete’ to eat the hottest chilli burger in the world (might not be, but hey, I reckon so) from Burger Off in Brunswick Street West, Brighton. Before I describe this hilarious and quite bonkers episode let me tell you a little about this quintessential takeaway. Burger Off is not your “Gourmet Burger Bar” type of place and it doesn’t claim to be. It’s Just good old, honest, sloppy but tantalising fast food that comes with high acclaims. It’s reasonably priced with an array of tasty burgers, a whole meal coming in at around £4. Anyone that tries a Burger Off burger always comes back for more!

Pete finds himself scrambling for milk, or other any drink he could get his hands on, to cool the insane burning in his throat and stomach, running to and from the bathroom, not knowing where to go or what to do. After about ten minutes of this drama we decide to leave and get him home. We manage 50 yards before he collapses and starts writhing around the floor, clutching his stomach and asking for help.

The Challenge: Eat the hottest chilli burger in the world!

Pete: “What do I do? I need help, I can’t walk. I’m bloody hallucinating. GET ME AN AMBULANCE.”

Pete: “Why am I so nervous? Let’s get this over and done with!”

After 15 minutes of rolling on the floor and tearing off half his clothes, an ambulance arrives, the crew calming him down and whisking him off to A&E! It dawns on me. “Oh dear, we’ve just killed Pete”. He is later released with major anxiety and cold shakes, coupled with excruciating stomach cramps and the ringsting from hell!

Pete takes the first few bites of the XXX Chilli burger and seems unfazed by the immense heat thrashing his senses like a sledge hammer. Then about half way through, a succession of grunts and inaudible noise’s escape from his gob, “Ummpff...God...” He’s starting to feel the effects. He then tries a new tactic by stuffing the whole damn thing into his mouth, chomping down every last bit. What a champion, not many have eaten the whole burger. Over 700 have signed for this abomination and only a few have managed the whole thing. He then leaps into the air with a crazed wide-eyed stare and a look of desperation. Pete: “OH YES, WOOOH, FUCKING HELL, WHAT A RUSH! WHAT A FUCKING RUSH! OH MAN, WHAT A RUSH!!”

The XXX Chilli burger is not for the foolhardy, but is only a gimmick. Let’s not forget that Burger Off is known for some of the best Burgers in Brighton, which I can truly vouch for. The burgers are absolutely scrumptious and I encourage everyone to try one if you haven’t done so.

See the VIDEO of Petes burger challenge at:

It’s bloody hilarious! He didn’t think so though

ross noble Ahead of the annual Brighton Comedy Fest we decided to send intrepid reporter/scandal-teaser Andy Hollis off to have a chat with one of the best loved comedians of his generation, Ross Noble. With some trepidation we received the copy, so here we are with tales of Frankie Boyle, Muslims, crystal meth and pottery dragons. Well what did you expect!?? This is a bit of a dodgy line isn’t it? No, no, I’ve got a mouth full of breakfast and I’m trying to whistle to my dog at the same time. You’re outside aren’t you? I am, I’m out in the country. You’re sitting outside in this beautiful weather, eating breakfast, with your dogs whilst I’m here sitting in a gardenless flat in Brighton…. Ah but you say that. What would happen though if I suddenly needed a pottery dragon? I mean that’s at LEAST a car journey for me, whereas for you in Brighton you just need to open your front door and there we go, a selection of places selling pottery dragons right in front of you. Very true. If I bump my head I can get hold of a healing crystal in a flash. Exactly! I think in Brighton they don’t have those methadone clinics for smack addicts do they? You can’t go in there and just get a dose of methadone in Brighton, they’ll just hand you over a healing crystal with great ceremony. In fact, maybe Brighton is where Crystal Meth originated from? Two sides of the same sword? Yes, the hippies drug of choice. Methadone and a healing crystal. There’s not much point asking you what we should expect of your show at the Brighton Comedy Festival is there? No. As you’ve gathered, you can have a plan and then if they audience doesn’t derail it, I’ll do it myself. I did fight against it for a while, saying “you need discipline Ross” but it just didn’t work for me. It’s a strength now, it’s got to the point where nobody knows what to expect. So yes, the answer is actually anything. You’ve played down here quite a few times – any sordid or comical Brighton memories you’d care to share? I do but I’m a happily married man now, so I’m not so sure my wife would be terribly keen to hear them. It’s weird playing in Brighton – you’ll play at the Dome for a couple of nights, in front of 4,000 people, and then you’ll meet EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM the next

day, shopping in the Laines. For pottery dragons. In 2007 you were voted number 10 in the top 100 stand-ups. The updated 2010 list puts you at number 11. Are you getting slowly worse? Yes, definitely. I’ve clearly taken my eye off the ball! No, actually somebody moved up. It was Ricky Gervais. I think maybe Ricky has got better and I’ve got worse. I was reading an interview with Tim Minchin recently and he admitted to being more wary of making jokes about certain faiths now as he has a family. You’ve flirted with it with the “Cheeky Muslim Dance” – do you ever worry about repercussions or backlash with your comedy? It’s in the back of your mind I guess to an extent. Look, people can believe what they want. My problem is that I just don’t see that religion should be afforded a special dispensation. When I make a joke, there’s no malice in it at all, and I think people realise that. I’m quite light-hearted about serious subjects. Someone like Frankie Boyle, everything he does is nasty – his attitude is nasty and that’s fine for him, but when I have a go at something, I’m just poking fun. I mean if you slag off One Direction these days you end up getting death threats! There’s a lot of discussion about that currently – the line between comedy and offensiveness. Is there a line? It’s a difficult one. I think anything is fair game, but it’s about the attitude behind the approach. If you’re prepared to be that brave…. well….the thing is, there was a genuine point and joke to be made regarding Jordan and her son – the way she was putting him on television and turning him into a media personality. There are ways of highlighting disability and the issues surrounding that without pushing your young son into the media spotlight. I thought that was very unfair and irresponsible. But Frankie managed to do the impossible and make a joke that actually managed to give her the moral high ground, which was a real shame. Okay, a few fan questions for you – from Graham – Newcastle UK or Newcastle Australia? Oh Newcastle UK definitely. I love the Australian beaches, but it’s a question of loyalty. Helen would like to know, if you had a big box of lego, what would you build? Probably a giant Donald Duck or a big pirate. I’ve made smaller versions of both with my daughters lego so I’d want to upscale. I actually take photo’s of lego on my phone and show people, saying “I built that….”

BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 11 ]

One from Dan – would you rather fight a horse sized duck or 100 duck sized horses. Oh I’ve heard that one many times. I reckon the 100 little ones. Once you’d fought them you could corral them and recreate Western films. Or you could race them. A better question would be, would a thoroughbred duck sized horse beat a greyhound in a race? And finally, Chris Taylor would like to know if you’ll marry him? I can’t help him yet as it’s not legal. Once gay marriage has been approved I’ll need to talk to the wife and clear it with her. At that point, well yes, I don’t see any reason why not…… By Andy Hollis

MARCUS BRIGSTOCKE There are a lot of things in this country that could be greatly improved with an abundant application of common sense. But changes for the better aren’t coming fast enough for Marcus Brigstocke. So now he’s taking to the road with his show, The Brig Society, which is a well-balanced sardonic mix of frustration and humour. It seems even Brighton isn’t too right on for a visit from him, Green Party MP or not, as his show comes to The Dome as part of Dave's Brighton Comedy Festival this month. So seeing as he’s in a sharing mood, let’s find out what else he’s got to say. Can you tell us about the current show? What will The Brig Society deliver to the nation that’s almost on its knees? About 2 years ago some unbelievably wealthy, privately educated, white men offered us the “opportunity” to take power back from central government and make a more locally accountable ‘Big Society’. What they meant was - “please could you run all of the stuff we’re supposed to run but cant bring ourselves to care about...” Well the idea of the Brig Society is to take the preposterous, dishonest notion of a ‘Big Society’ and run with it like it’s a real thing instead of a thin veneer painted over a load of ideologically driven cuts imposed on us by the Bullingdon Club. In The Brig Society - we take them at their word and actually take charge of our own affairs. We’ll appoint our own chancellor and a Banker Finder General, we’ll put an engineer in charge of the railways and renationalise them, we’ll reshuffle our own cabinet so that the people running our business look like us, sound like us, talk like us and eat where we eat. So - it’s that really... with jokes. You’re a man of many talents. What do you enter for “occupation” on your airport arrival cards? Clown. Unless I’m going to the US in which case I put a flirty ‘what do you want it to be?’. They love that at Homeland Security. You’ve been doing a lot of theatre in recent years. How does this differ from doing your own solo shows (apart from being on stage with other people)? Have you always had a hankering for stage work? Theatre’s fun - Eric Idle handed me the script for Spamalot, written (mostly) by Monty Python and said ‘Here, go and put on that crown and cloak, pick up that sword and piss about with this for a while’. I mean what’s not to like? Tucker from Grange Hill banged his nuts together and we pretended to be on a horse! You’ve taken the role of Albert Perks in a production of The Railway Children recently, a part mostly associated with the mighty Bernard Cribbins. What did you bring to this much loved role, or were you just channelling your inner Bernard? The fact that Cribbins played Perks was an added delight for me when I did it. He wrote ‘Right said Fred’ and ‘Digging a hole’ and I got to play the same part as him - that’s a massive privilege. I did it differently. I think. It was performed on a stage built over a railway line with a real 100 year old train - so there was no doubt who or what the star of the show was. Is it a shame that kids don’t get to play on railway lines anymore? It looks like an opportunity for some thrilling adventures. Well quite. I’m sure someone will bring out ‘The Railway Children - mission to Oakworth’ for the Nintendo Wii - where a 3D avatar of Jenny Agutter takes her petticoats off and you have to wave them about in the air. 18 certificate I suspect.

Is The Late Edition ever going to return? If not, then why‘s it so difficult to get informative political satire shows commissioned on TV, at a time when we need them most? I don’t think the Late Edition will come back. Sadly. It takes too much courage for telly people to take that sort of risk. I’d love - more than anything else to host a UK version of The Daily Show. Perhaps one day. Online. From a shed in my garden. An angry old man shouting into a camera while people watch clips of kittens sliding off a bed on BBC1. Oh dear. I’ll stick to the thrill of stand up thanks. You were a vocal supporter of Caroline Lucas in her successful bid to become our MP, how did this come about? Any plans to hook up with her when you come to Brighton? I felt very strongly (as a non resident with nothing to lose) that Caroline would make a great MP. Hers is a voice that is so important in Westminster. Amongst the dearth of Private School posh boys (like me) we need Caroline Lucas to hold them to account. Yes, I’d love to see her when I come down but if my instincts about her were right she’ll be too busy and rightly so. Vast swathes of our population are disillusioned with the way this country is being run. What action can people take to make things politically better, without inadvertently becoming part of the problem themselves? Shop locally, bank ethically, take the train, use the bus, eat well (seasonally if you can), buy things that will last, only work hard at the things that matter, meet your MP and make them work for you... oh and vote. But voting won’t make nearly as much difference to the world we live in as changing your bank accounts and walking past the supermarket to the greengrocer, butcher and baker just beyond. What have you got in your pockets right now? Fluff and my phone. Your Wikipedia page is fairly colourful, in my experience the only more interesting celebrity profiles are for Charlie Sheen and Errol Flynn, but is it all true? If it is, can you tell us something they haven’t covered to date? (Yes, this is a blatant attempt at getting some exclusive gossip.) Exclusive Gossip - well it’s true I used to be a podium dancer and it’s true I used to work on an oil rig. What may not be on there is that I used to make a bit of extra money teaching people to roller blade and that I’m a massive fan of Neil Diamond. Not exactly gossip but it’s best I can do... Oh... also... Amanda Holden hit me once. Marcus Brigstocke - The Brig Society at The Dome on Fri 19 Oct. By Stuart Rolt

PIFF THE MAGIC DRAGON

BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 15 ]

PIFF THE MAGIC DRAGON With such a plethora of different quality acts at Dave's Brighton Comedy Festival this month, how does a talented performer get themselves noticed? A more surreal option is to be a dragon that fires a small dog from a canon and lures beautiful princesses out of the audience with his remarkable brand of magic. No, we haven’t lost the plot. He really does exist, and here’s what he has to say for himself. What do the other members of the magic scene think of you dressing up as a dragon? It was viewed with some scepticism when I started. There were a few raised eyebrows. But all the best things always start off as being a bit unusual. I always imagined the Magic Circle as taking it all quite seriously, when they get some chap in a green monster suit turning up. Well, I’d actually won the Magic Circle (Magician of the Year Competition) after doing Piff for three years. I’d always been a respected magician, so it made it easier when I started dressing up. If they all know you can do it, then they’re happier to watch. So is Piff a separate character, or is he just an extension of your character? He’s really an extension of my own persona. He enables me to do all the things I could never get away with because I’d look too ridiculous, like pretending I had magic powers and flirting with princesses. You could never really do that as a guy in a dinner suit without it being horrible. Does the quality of audience participation have a direct correlation to the attractiveness of the person you pull up on stage? You can see my enthusiasm going up in relation to that. But I don’t bring people on stage unless they look like they are going to be fun. What do you feel is the most important piece of knowledge you can pass on to new magicians? Follow what you want to do. There are a lot of people who just look around and do what everyone else us doing, but

you might as well try doing something different. Where do you stand with the guy in Ukraine that ripped off your act on a national TV talent show? I just heard about it. I looked at the video and I couldn’t believe it, it was just word for word. My agent spoke to a lawyer, but suing people is a pointless waste of time. So we got maximum publicity from it. But I actually met the talent show judge that busted him and she had been fired for exposing him. The weird thing is he looks like me, so for a while I was thinking I’d been to Russia without remembering. Did you find it flattering, irritating or just plain strange? I found it strange, but I was really, really annoyed about it. I had to fly to Vegas the next day and when I turned my phone on I had loads of messages about it, so I ended up being really angry. Was there any one person who encouraged you to take up magic? I did it as a hobby when I was ill as a kid. Then I carried on doing it. There were people like Jerry Sadowitz and someone called The Amazing Jonathon, they were the people whomade me laugh and laugh, and did amazing magic tricks. When I was at university I was dong computer science and I was looking to not be doing that for the rest of my life. So who’s the most famous Dave you’ve met? David Copperfield. I was in Vegas and because of the Youtube thing everyone knew about my act. I got asked to see his show, then afterwards I met him. He was really nice and his manager put me up in the MGM Grand for a week. Piff the Magic Dragon brings his Jurassic Bark show to The Dome on Sat 6 October. 16+ and absolutely no dragonslayers. THEATRE GUIDE Not loads of theatre around in October mainly due to Dave’s Brighton Comedy Festival taking to most of the stages in town, but there’s still some great shows to experience. There’s some Rough Justice at The Theatre Royal on Mon 08 - Sat 13 Oct. Terence Frisby, the author of the triumphant comedy There’s a Girl in My Soup brings us a very different treat, fronted by the marvellous Tom Conti. Television journalist James Highwood has made his career out of challenging the British Justice system in his documentary programmes. Suddenly, he finds himself being challenged, when he’s brought to court on a charge of murder. He admits the killing but perversely chooses to defend himself, pushing the tolerance of the court to its limits and framing his defence in terms calculated to incense the judge. The Iron Duke pub and hotel on Waterloo Street, has had a refit and will soon be unveiling its new theatre and a Thai restaurant. The theatre’s manager, Mill Goble, is a local producer and promoter, who has produced shows on the Brighton Fringe for a number of years. The new venue seats around 40-50 people and

will be hosting 2-3 performances per week. Upcoming shows include stand-up from David Whitney (Fonejacker), 12 Step Comedy with compere Ben Shannon (Laughing Horse New Act of The Year 2012 Finalist), and Canadian comedian Mae Martin, who recently won the award for Best International Act at Brighton Festival and Fringe 2012, as well as theatre from local company The Knapper Experience, and appearances from local musicians. BRIGHTON COMEDY FRINGE 12th Oct - 10th Nov By Megan Tatum It seems the South East has been beset with festivals in the past few weeks but the Brighton Comedy Fringe is still worth highlighting on your (hypothetical) calendar. The event brings three weeks of wit, slapstick, and wry comment to the city in a gratefully received antidote to the wettest – and therefore most depressing - Autumn for 30 years. Now in its 7th year at Upstairs at Three and Tens, the event has done much to nurture rising stars in the industry as well as luring the best in the business from Northern climes to perform by the sea. As Director, Nicola Haydn, said, “Our fringe came about because I saw so many acts at the Edinburgh Fringe that weren’t coming down to Brighton at that time: Patrick Monahan, Josie Long, Carl Donnelly, Daniel Kitson – the sorts of performers that create a special dynamic with an audience in a room.” So who is worth a look from this year’s line-up? The winner of the BBC new comedy award 2011, Angela Barnes, will perform at the venue on Sunday 28th October alongside Jim Campbell. The redhead’s deadpan style has attracted mixed reviews in the past but the intimate setting at Upstairs at Three and Tens will ensure those killer lines aren’t lost in the echoes of a larger venue. Recipient of a Best Newcomer Award nomination from

Edinburgh, Ben Target will venture to the city on 2nd November. In 53 minutes he convinced the Guardian he was a “hugely gifted prop comic” and others just a “crazy man with props” but his own eccentric brand of comedy is definitely worth a look for those tired of restrained, observational stand-ups. If sitting passively for an evening doesn’t appeal then feel free to get involved with Aaaand Now for Something Completely Improvised, a comic play based on audience suggestions. The Racing Minds group react purely to ideas from the crowd to put together a play that is unique every evening, a risky strategy that has so far paid off with great reviews from Edinburgh. The group will appear in Brighton on Sunday 4th November. To finish off the three week event Nish Kumar will appear in his self-titled show, Who is Nish Kumar? Described as “ludicrously charming” by Time Out and mistaken as the hypothetical ghost of Salman Rushdie by a passer-by, Nish has just completed his solo debut in Edinburgh to rapturous acclaim. Find out exactly who he is on Saturday 10th November. For tickets and further details go to www. brightoncomedyfringe.co.uk. FILM A DEAD GOOD TIME AT THE DUKE’S By Wayne Imms

This month will see the Duke of York’s marking thirty years since the rise of the video nasties. On Sunday October 28th, following a rare cinema screening of The Evil Dead, a panel of guests will discuss the horror classic’s impact and the video nasty phenomenon. The guests are the British Board of Film Classification’s Senior Examiner Craig Lapper, Empire Magazine’s Chris Hewitt and Ben Wheatley, director of the highly acclaimed 2011 film, Kill List. Released in 1982, The Evil Dead is a highly popular cult horror film, and the debut from director Sam Raimi. Raimi went onto direct the original Spider-Man trilogy and the acclaimed western The Quick and the Dead. Because of its graphic violence and terror, the original version of the film was banned in several countries. In 1985, the BBFC refused it a certificate altogether, leading to it being banned, and in the process became one of the highest profile victims of the video nasties campaign. Video nasties is a term that was originally coined to ban a group of horror videos in Britain in the 1980s. Most of these video nasties were graphic low-budget films produced in the United States. Public awareness of the

availability of these videos began in early 1982, when the UK distributors of Driller Killer took out full-page advertisements in a number of specialist video magazines, depicting the video’s explicit cover. This resulted in a large number of complaints to the Advertising Standards Agency. The furore created by the response to video nasties led to the introduction of 1984’s Video Recordings Act, which imposed a stricter code of censorship on videos than was required for cinema release. As well as Driller Killer, key video nasty films included The Last House on the Left, I Spit on Your Grave, Zombie Holocaust – and, of course, The Evil Dead. Horror is one of my favourite film genres. I think I’ve only actually seen a couple of the so-called video nasties; The Evil Dead, which I saw on DVD around two months ago, and The Last House on the Left, which I saw a few years ago at a regular cult film type night in Brighton. The Evil Dead appeared to be very similar to its equally popular sequel, The Evil Dead 2, which I vaguely recall seeing a long time ago, while The Last House on the Left was a very grim experience, yet with some darkly comedic elements. I’m old enough to remember when video cassettes first came out and the boom in video rental shops. This was the early eighties, an exciting time for young film fans like me. This new medium meant that so many films which I’d never seen were available. It was so different from today’s digitalised world of virtually instantly available and downloadable experiences. Back then, it all meant a lot more. For some time, the videos that I would get a chance to see weren’t very nasty, although occasionally on some Sunday mornings, my dad and I would head over to my uncle’s to catch films such as An American Werewolf in London and Scanners. However, when Alien received a late night screening on ITV, my dad

BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 29 ]

wouldn’t let me watch it. This led to a big tearful tantrum from me. A few video nasty films have since been remade. Among them were The Last House on the Left, produced by its original director Wes Craven, who was responsible for the Nightmare on Elm Street and the Scream series, and I Spit on Your Grave. I saw the latter’s remake quite recently, which was far from great, but worth a watch. An inevitable remake of The Evil Dead is currently in production. Set for a 2013 release, it’s being produced by the original star, Bruce Campbell, and producer Sam Raimi. Rather bizarrely, a stage musical of The Evil Dead is currently touring America. It sure is fair to say that since the 80s a lot more far gorier, many quite sick, films have emerged, especially in recent years. I’ve seen some of them, including the very disturbing French film Martyr, which I don’t recommend. It’s one of the most disturbing films I’ve ever seen. These type of films, such as the Saw and the Hostel series are regarded as “torture porn”. These aren’t exactly renowned for great stories and characterisations, and they’re regarded as little more than portraying people being trapped in horrendously fatal situations. However, they have gained a huge following. The event at the Duke of York’s later in the month will partly be a celebration of the good old days of horror, well, the video nasties, of course, with a rather nostalgic look at this notorious genre and how these so-called films of filth to an extent infiltrated British society. Tickets for The Evil Dead and the Rise of the Video Nasties are available from www.soundstageevents. co.uk

the yellow sofa Lauren Easton Interview By Stuart Rolt

The Yellow Sofa is a relatively new work which puts some soap opera into opera, with a tale of love, betrayal and deception, all set amongst a bourgeois 19th century society. After a successful premiere at the 2009 Glyndebourne Festival, the opera is going on the road next month. Written specially by Glyndebourne first Composer-in-Residence Julian Philips, it’s based on a short story by Eça de Queirós and musically combines traditional opera with Portuguese folk music. The laid-back Godofredo is quite happy with his seemingly comfortable marriage to Ludovina. That is, until he discovers her in a compromising position with his business partner, Machado, on his beloved yellow sofa. Tradition dictates he challenges Machado to a duel, but he would much prefer life to return to normal. Taking the part of Amarela is Australian-born, mezzo-soprano, Lauren Easton who nicely spoke to us about this upcoming tour and life amongst one of the world’s finest opera companies. BN1: Can you tell us a little about The Yellow Sofa? LE: It’s a little over an hour, so it’s a nice short piece, originally written

to showcase Glyndebourne and members of its chorus. Now it’s back this year to do the same, but we’re taking it on tour. I’m looking forwards to playing the Royal Opera House, that’ll be quite special. How come it’s always so difficult for female characters in so many works? We always end up as witches or something interesting. I think they just make for dramatic characters. It’s far more enjoyable as a performer to have your character go through some terrible journey that ends badly, it’s more interesting than a happy ending and just skipping off the stage. We’re just addicted to the drama. What should novices expect from their first visit to the opera? It’s addictive drama. Opera is stories with drama, romance and intrigue. Ours is predominantly in English, so you will know what’s going on. If you pick well, it can be a great experience and something that keeps you going back. That’s what our production is about, trying to make opera accessible.

When did you begin singing opera and what was your inspiration? I started singing when I was about seven. I was lucky enough to have a music scholarship that made things available to me. It was a natural progression. What does it take to be an opera singer? It’s a lot like the pop industry now. You have to be the whole package these days - the looks, the personality, be easy to work with, very selectable and slick. The best way to describe it like having ten buckets

Lauren in The Yellow Sofa glyndebourne tour

and it’s no good to have one filled to the brim and the others empty. You have to have every bucket as full as possible. What do you like best about being an opera singer? It’s a massive combination, which changes daily. I don’t think there’s any one element that stands out, but knowing that you’ve had an effect on your audience, maybe changing their minds about coming to the opera more often. Having someone walking out of your performance thinking differently to when they went in is

pretty special. What music do you listen to apart from opera? When I get home, I don’t want to listen to any more opera. I like to put my musical brain somewhere else. I love to indulge in other people’s techniques and what they’re interested in. I’ve done a lot of folk singing, so coming to The Yellow Sofa with its folk influences is a real joy. Where do you go to be alone? Other than bed, I like walking around the Downs and the Grange gardens

here in Lewes. The Downs is very reminiscent of a place in the Southern Highlands that I know quite well. Along the beach front in Brighton is always nice in the sun, when it comes out. It’s really nice being in this area and not in the hustle and bustle of London The Yellow Sofa runs through October at Glyndebourne then travels the country, through November and into December, as part of Glyndebourne Tour 2012. www. glyndebourne.com

Brighton & Hove Skateparks Association Back in August, on possibly the hottest day of the year skateboarders young and old swarmed down to Hove Lagoon skatepark to soak up the sun and participate in one of Brighton and Hove Skate Parks Association’s yearly competitions. As part of efforts to extend the reach of the sport in the area, girls have been encouraged to sign up for free weekly skateboard lessons through a course run by Sports Development and Brighton Youth Centre. Lucy Adams, the UK’s No. 1 Skateboarder, has been helping run the course at the Lagoon throughout the summer months. Ricardo Magee Atxukarro, Skate Park Development Officer for Brighton and Hove City Council said: “The city has a thriving skateboarding scene, so there’s a definite need for improved and updated facilities in the city.” His role has been influential in the campaign to provide better skate facilities in the city. through evidencing and increasing participation in skate scene and working with BHSA and BYC. Brighton has a rich heritage of skateboarding, stretching back almost to the early days of the sport. The Flip skate brand has roots in the town, also Don Brown, one of the leading lights at Etnies, learnt to become among the best freestyle skaters in the world on our city’s streets.

Also, finally arriving, was the news that planning permission had finally been granted for the redevelopment of the long-decaying skate facilities on The Level. The new skatepark will meet the needs of a range of ages and abilities and be suitable for all wheeled sports. It will cater for a full range of abilities from novices and young children to adult and very experienced skaters. So far a total of £150,000 has been secured for the new skatepark and construction is expected to start in January 2013. Although this isn’t enough to build a skatepark of the scale and quality that’s being proposed, it is hoped that with help from sponsors and further funding streams, enough money can be raised. The importance of these facilities shouldn’t be underestimated, as entertainment opportunities for young people in the area dwindle; council coordinated undertakings like these are becoming more and more important in keeping kids occupied and active. The usual suspects

Dale and Marc are friends who have been working together as stylists for several years. They both used to work in Brighton and have both worked in a variety of salons but were looking for something different when they were introduced to Vicky and Maryam who own The Usual Suspects in Hove. They were seeking more autonomy in their jobs, greater creativity and freedom and were contemplating opening their own salon when through chance met Vicky and Maryam who, on seeing the quality of their work, invited them both to come and work at Usual Suspects with total autonomy. Although each is solely responsible for their operation within the business, the great thing about the Usual Suspects is the range of individual talent working there, and in the very near future they aim to come together bringing their various skills and abilities to work collectively on creative projects both inside and outside the salon. Marc was trained at the Sassoon Academy in London and specialises in precision cutting and exploring the creative boundaries of hair design whilst simultaneously being passionate about classic styles and reproducing them faithfully or adding a contemporary twist.

Dale has had a wide variety of training and been working as a stylist for 18 years. Although he both cuts and colours, colour is his main passion. He loves the way that colour enhances a cut and can ultimately transform an individuals image in either very dramatic or subtle ways, depending on what the client is looking for; although like Marc, Dale’s sights are firmly set towards the creative end of hairdressing and he enjoys exploring the boundaries of colour design and application. So on Thursday 27 Sept there was a little launch party to welcome in Dale and Marc to Usual Suspects together with a variety of guests and alongside live music performed by local talent Kelly G. Dale and Marc showcased several models whose hair they had designed, cut and coloured especially for the launch.

FRESHER S... By Matt Russell Yes it’s that time of year again folks. Where people wildly overspend capital which isn’t technically theirs. No one has the remotest idea which is the best party to go for, dirty tricks are rife and people lie in a constant attempt to endear themselves to those whom they have never met. Personas are manufactured, bullishit is peddled on an industrial scale, purer ideologies are sacrificed for new found trendy mantras and “like me, like me, PLEASE fucking like me” ness is bounded around like a whiney squash ball. Babies are kissed repeatedly and through a process of shameless, one sided osmosis, once valiant and honourable souls transform into dark and sinister shadows of their former selves. No it’s not the presidential election, it is of course..... Freshers Week !!! (I made the baby thing up) Yes, for a week, the quaint English sound of leather on willow is audibly usurped by the crash of vomit on Primark. Now as a town, Brighton has been enjoying freshers week, every week, since George VI strutted his opium induced stuff on the Waltzfloor, got absolutely banjoed, and drunkenly -I’m assuming- decided to build the worlds most visually inappropriate town centre residence. I recently bore witness to, what I feel, was a situation that emcompasses the “Freshers Experience” in pitch perfect clarity. Two girls and a scruffy looking fella stumble in to the Mash Tun Pub. He is ecstatic and with good reason- he is kissing both girls in the breaks between them groping each other !!! He looks astronomically chuffed as he leaves arm in arm with the two young ladies. Jealous much? Don’t be. My friends and I later passed this erstwhile casanova slumped at a bus stop, alone, covered in a

Ginsters pasty crumbs. And that, my comrades, is the freshers week experience in a nutshell. The fantastical ideas you once harboured will, most likely, at some point, slip through those kebab and rolling tobacco stained fingers. So my student friends go forth, luxuriate yourselves, consume in excess, keep A&E interminably busy!! But take heed. This isn’t just a week long event and you won’t grow out of it anytime soon. For as I realised recently, even the most fairytale looking, intelligent, non students among us - when exposed to too many pink fluffy drinks - can inflict a bile tsunami on an unsuspecting cocktail bar!! Don’t spend all those fun tokens at once people, you have three years of this. Enjoy !! Just please. Don’t throw up on me.
