WELCOME to the 21st Birthday of Paddle Round the Pier Beach Festival! This annual event has grown from very humble beginnings in 1996 into what is now considered to be the World’s largest charitable beach festival. “Paddle” remains one the highlights of Brighton’s summer calendar, with visitor numbers averaging 50,000 from across the city and across the globe who all converge on Hove Lawns to celebrate a little aloha! Paddle Round The Pier is a two-day extravaganza where the sea meets the beach and thousands of people enjoy a huge variety of activities, sporting competitions, music and other entertainment. A highlight for 2017 is going to be the Streetfunk HipHop Dance competition in the Hartleys BBoy Arena and then we have our new 20m x 15m demo pool #have-a-go. There’s a few new surprises in there as always along with some firm favourites like the entertainment stages, great food & drink and of course the Paddle Something Unusual on Sunday at 12noon! Over the past few years the event has raised over £300,000.00 for the chosen charities and this year we’re looking to increase that figure with your help by supporting the RNLI, The Wave Project and Brighton Surf Life Saving Club. It’s worth bearing in mind that this event is organised and run entirely by volunteers (many of whom literally take unpaid leave from work to make this event happen). I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank the “Paddle Crew” for all their tremendous work and dedication to giving our city such a marvellous event. Remember all monies raised on the gates are given directly to the charities so please support this event by donating what you can into the buckets carried by our official collectors at the gates and around the event. So on behalf of all the Paddle Crew (our Ohana) - We hope you enjoy this year’s “Paddle” and we look forward to seeing you back again next year (July 7th & 8th 2018) Mahalo (Hawaiian for thanks!)

THE RISE, FALL, AND RISE OF THE UKULELE By Henna Malik Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam famously wrote a Grammy-winning record dedicated to it. Paul McCartney strummed one in a tribute to friend and band mate George Harrison during his 2002 tour. Israel Kamakawio’ole’s version of ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’ made worldwide success while Jake Shimabukuro’s reinvention of ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’ went viral. But somehow, dipping in and out of popularity, enduring decades of endless rebuffs, the ukulele – the exotic baby of the guitar family - has always been overshadowed by its larger counterparts. Arriving in Hawaii over 125 years ago, the ukulele’s roots actually originated in Europe. After its initial excitement, the instrument unfortunately ended up with the unfair reputation of a kitschy comedy toy, thanks to the likes of George Formby and Tiny Tim. The ukulele in fact acquired its first peak of success during The Great Depression. It was seen as a jazz age icon in a time when frugal families wanted to still be able to access music without the out-of-reach price tag. Small, affordable and accessible, the ukulele was very much ‘the people’s instrument’. After that, following its triumphant release the soundtrack of Elvis Presley’s Blue Hawaii had the number one spot on the Billboard charts - for an incredible five months. This was an extraordinary success for the tiny instrument, and for a while it seemed the only way left for the humble uke to go was up. Shortly after, the instrument fell into an unexpected musical purgatory when rock’n’roll entered our lives. Something so inoffensive, so gentle and charming, so full of joy and whimsy could never - would never be ‘cool’. Squashed under the addictive charisma of Chuck Berry and his intimidating, boisterous and fantastic Gibson Les Paul, the sweet little uke became as square as square could be. In recent years, the ukulele has made a major comeback as the absolute staple of the underground folk revival, or folk’n’roll as some have been known to call it. Beirut, Noah and The Whale and many more indie-folk sweethearts harnessed the harmless, plaintive, accessible charm of the ukulele. The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain have even been known to sell out revered venues, boasting an impressive repertoire from Nirvana to Beethoven and everything in between. Children and adults alike are covering anything and everything thanks to the magic of YouTube, where tutorials are plenty and the learning is easy, free, and in endless abundance. Kids have swapped their recorders for ukuleles at school (thank god), transforming music lessons from a piercing ruckus to a chorus of secretly gentle spirits. Crooning couple Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt pawed at their ukes with a sugar-sweet whimsy showing us that romance really isn’t dead. At least, not when there’s a ukulele around. Strangely intimate, with its anyone-can-play approachability, we’ve all got a bit of a soft spot for this little hero of the guitar family. It’s safe to say: our four-stringed friend is here for the long run.

This relaxing activity is already a craze in the US, and offers a wonderful new way to work out.
Ever tried a sport where you balance on a board, on moving waves with a paddle in your hand? Sound appealing? Well, this is one of the latest and greatest watersports to wash up on our shores in previous years. Stand up paddle boarding originated in Hawaii, where surfers would stand on their boards to take photos when they discovered how effectively they could travel that way. The technique is simply to stand up on the board and use the paddle to propel yourself. Sound easy? Throw in some unpredictable waves and the icy cold water of the English Channel, and suddenly it seems much more difficult. More and more people are getting involved in the sport, whether it’s competitively or just for fun. Heading out with a group of friends promises to provide giggles aplenty, while gently floating along the coast with the setting sun in your sights makes for an idyllic finale to any summer’s day. The South Coast is a haven for water sports during the warmer months, and there are many local places where you can bring a few mates and try a few out for yourself...

yoga. This relaxing activity is already a craze in the US, and offers a wonderful new way to work out. The board is used as an alternative yoga mat, increasing the intensity of each pose and providing a greater challenge with added benefits. Classes start on land with a few basic poses, before being transferred to the water. Paddle board yoga strengthens the core, improves balance, tones muscles, reduces stress and increases body awareness. Fallen in love with the sport? Why not take it to the next level and get yourself kitted out with a shiny new board? A beginner board will cost about £300, while for something more advanced you’ll be looking around the £600 mark. Professional boards could set you back over £1000! So don your favourite shorts or grab your wetsuit, brace yourself for icy waters and get ready to paddle to your heart’s content. You’ll be a pro by the end of the summer without a doubt!
Throughout the year, Hove Lagoon offer stand up paddle boarding sessions. The venue has a shallow, sheltered lagoon, perfect for beginners and experts alike. Waistdeep water with no currents or tides makes for the perfect atmosphere to learn. With a prime location right on the seafront, there is easy access to transfer your skills from the shallows straight to the open ocean. Beginners will learn to kneel, stand, turn, self-rescue and carry their equipment. Intermediates will learn new skills and get to paddle on the sea. Hove Lagoon guarantee success standing up and paddling - or you’ll be offered a free session! Summers on Brighton Beach can be quite the spectacle, so there’s plenty to see if you go stand up paddle boarding at Brighton Watersports. In this prime location you can head out on your own and hire a board for £10 per person, per hour, looking out over our bustling beach. Not quite a pro yet? They offer lessons teaching self-rescue, dealing with different sea and wind conditions, equipment handling, paddle stroke and the perfect board stance. As Brighton’s only Indo Board test centre, during your lesson you’ll have a dry run on land, learning the basics of balance and manoeuvring before hitting the waves for real. Heading further afield, you can paddle to The Kite Surf Centre in Camber, Bosham Sailing Club in Chichester or 2XS on West Wittering beach. But if the sea is not for you, lake paddle boarding is offered all year at Southwater Country Park or Chichester Watersports lake. If you fancy something a little more serene, on the other hand, Hove Lagoon have begun stand up paddle board

Kitesurfkings’ Big Air Competition kicks off at 2.30pm on Sat 1 July. If you plan to enter, be sure to keep an eye out for weather updates at the Kitesurfkings stand. The wind naturally dictates the competition conditions, meaning there may be a chance it could be rescheduled - in which case it’ll take place on Sun 2 July. The Kitesurfkings stand is located five to ten metres east of Entrance 4, and don’t forget, it’s also the place to go if you’re a beginner interested in getting into the sport. You might not be an expert in time to enter the competition, but kitesurfing is a sport that can be enjoyed from day one, and Luke and his team will do their absolute best to help you become a pro in time to bag some prizes next year!
grabs. First prize for ‘Highest Jump’ is a full carbon 2017 CrazyFly Raptor kiteboard worth over £650! Not only that, but there are more prizes for awesome accomplishments such as ‘Most Effort’ and ‘Best Wipe Out’ - so there’s something for everyone. Luke’s latest initiative has been to encourage more female riders to jump in and get involved in the competition. If he can secure a close number of girls and guys for the competition, he’ll be offering a hot new kiteboard of the same value so that there’s a board up for grabs for both the male and female who can perform the highest jump… now that’s something worth shouting about. Whether you prefer to kitesurf, stand up paddle board, kayak, or even swim, there’s a certain way you can get involved in Paddle Round the Pier in absolute style this year: a down-winder from Lancing Green around 12pm on Sat 1 July should have you arrive in just the right place and just the right time for the competition. “How cool is that?” says Luke, “You can literally kitesurf to our competition and park your kite on the competition beach that’ll be clearly marked out, ready for the event!” www.kitesurfkings.com
Don’t be put off by the fact that this is a free event or a free-to-enter competition – there’s still a totally impressive bunch of kiteboarding prizes up for

Luke Denny and his crew at Shoreham’s Kitesurfkings Kite School have been giving the gift of flight to endlesss keen kitesurf students, young and old, for the last decade. When asked to run a kitesurfing competition for Paddle Round the Pier 2017, they jumped at the opportunity to be a part of it. “We love Paddle. It’s a really special event that everyone can enjoy,” said Luke. “Add a Big Air Competition in the mix and what’s not to get excited about?”

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. Its volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service around the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland coasts. The RNLI is independent of Coastguard and government and depends on voluntary donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824 its lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved over 137,000 lives. Locally at Shoreham the new boathouse opened in October 2010 following a three-year community appeal to raise £1million towards the new build. The station’s new £2.7million Tamar lifeboat, named the Enid Collett, after the late donor whose generous legacy funded the boat, arrived in Shoreham on December 10. She had her first operational shout two days later. All the lifeboat crew and shore helpers, apart from the full-time mechanic, at Shoreham are voluntary and are on call 24-hours a day, 365 days a year.
Brighton Surf Life Saving Club
The Wave Project The Wave Project Brighton transforms the lives of vulnerable children and young people living in Brighton, and the surrounding areas, who have a mental health issue, learning and/or physical disability. Our surfing therapy courses and regular club sessions are delivered by our community of local volunteers. Together we work with vulnerable young people to improve their mental health and well-being by developing their confidence, self-esteem and self-image, in a supportive environment which understands and accepts difference. Suzie, aged 16, has kindly agreed we can share her inspiring story: “Before I started the Wave Project I was in hospital suffering from depression and anxiety. I didn’t really have any friends and I didn’t really speak to anyone. I kept myself quite isolated. I am much more confident now because of The Wave Project. I am volunteering three times a week now and I have been discharged from hospital. I should be starting college in September. The Wave Project has really saved my life.” As a new and fledging project, we are stoked with the support of our Brighton community to help us continue to change lives of local children and young people, like Suzie’s.
“Fantastic, awesome, that’s sick!!” is how our junior members described being a nominated charity for Paddle Round The Pier 2017 – and we agree! Being supported by Paddle is a huge honour and we’re ecstatic to be part of the world’s biggest free beach & water sports festival. Our trained and certified lifeguards provide full time search and rescue services as well as lifeguard cover and training for Paddle and other events, and this nomination enables us to improve our training and widen participation. We’re passionate about the water and enabling everyone, from all backgrounds, to enjoy and benefit from the sea in a safe and responsible manner. Our child and adult members are taught surf safety, basic lifesaving skills and surf and beach sports (wading, surf swimming, board-paddling, beach flags, beach sprints and relays), and train in the sea all year round! We build resilience and confidence, enhance communities and strive to keep alive the legacy of the Paddle weekend with everyone enjoying the sea safely throughout the rest of the year. As a children’s charity with 150+ members, every summer we work with Paddle on the Schools Surf Life Saving Programme, where we aim to widen participation throughout the city by inviting hundreds of pupils from primary and secondary schools to learn and ‘have a go’ at Surf Life Saving. The money raised at Paddle in 2017 will go towards our work in training and developing future Lifeguards as well as increasing participation through our child inclusion initiatives.

“I
had almost given up on kiteboarding. I was barely surviving on my sponsorships and I thought, ‘right, I’m doing something different’.” Unlikely as it may seem, these are the words of world-class British kitesurfer Lewis Crathern as he recalls the pivotal moment that ultimately shaped his career. Surprisingly, this point in time - which left Crathern questioning the direction of his future - occurred after he had already claimed the title of British Kitesurfing Champion for the fourth consecutive year (2005-2008). Not, as you would be forgiven for thinking, during the initial grind to find success. It is plain to see in Crathern’s case neither talent nor motivation were the issue. His passage into the sport seemed certain from a young age. Experiencing a meteoric ascension through the sport he was able to boast his first national title at the fresh age of 20 – just two years after he began flying his kite. “I was lucky. I was born close to the beach, I was always into sports... and I would look just out at the ocean.” He tells me the sport was still in its infancy when he started out, “it had only sort of hit our shores in 2000, so even now it’s quite new”. Therefore, not only did the early noughties see the birth of his athletic career, but they also saw the birth of the sport which he would go on to grow and develop alongside. It’s easy then to believe a lack of establishment within the sport, which came as a result of this, would have thrown up as many difficulties for him as it would benefits. For instance,
Crathern had to source his own equipment and was a self-taught talent for the most part. The Worthing born-and-bred kiteboarder to this day remains a local boy at heart, despite spending up to five or six months a year travelling. He tells me, in his opinion, Worthing remains “one of the best places in the world for kitesurfing”. A tall statement from someone who gets to kiteboard around the globe in places such as China, South Africa and the Mediterranean! Then, as if to further champion his hometown and his sport, he tells me kiting is an “easy-going sport to learn” and that the best kitesurfing schools are actually just minutes down the road in Lancing. He says, “you actually just have to lean back like you’re in a recliner chair and you just go around” – simple really, nothing to it! With no competitive titles to his name, 2010 saw Crathern attempt what has perhaps become his most daring and well-known feat to date – particularly within the non-kiteboarding world. This, of course, is the infamous stunt that saw him jump over Brighton Palace Pier – just a year after doing the same down the coast in Worthing. “That really helped my career actually. It [the jump] brought kiteboarding into the mainstream, which is quite difficult to do… I think people related to a person flying over a thing. That’s how simplified it was for me.”
to lean back like e av h st ju ly al tu ac “You r and you just go ai ch er in cl re a in e ’r you , nothing to it! ly al re e pl m si – d” n arou
Lewis Crathern By Kieran Graves
As if to prove this, two years after his pier jumps he returned back to competing at the top level the sport could offer, claiming a number of titles and records over the following years. Even when he crashed out of the Red Bull King of the Air at the start 2016 in an accident that left him comatose for a week, he was unable to stay away for too long. Just a matter of months later he would go on to claim the title of Vice Big Air World Champion, and then set a new British height record, jumping 22.3 metres into the air. “You kind of have to believe you’re invincible. If you’re worried about anything, you’re not gonna do it.”
The battle is still being fought to get the word out about kiteboarding and get it into the Olympics, while the sport still struggles to gain mainstream coverage. Although, as the most rapidly growing water sport in the world, this soon looks set to change. And why shouldn’t it? The sport, which is in reality five or six separate disciplines each with their own world tour (including slalom, freestyle and big air), is able to offer spectacles unlike anything that can be found elsewhere. Crathern, who has taken part in Paddle Round the Pier for the last few years now, tells me one way the sport is best spreading the word is through events like Paddle Round the Pier which offer competitions like the Kitesurfkings Big Air, as these serve as great showcases for the sport. Unfortunately, Crathern will be competing in Canada during this year’s event, but he encourages people to take part and get involved all the same - and we can’t wait to see him next year!

Crathern’s break from competitive kiting wasn’t to last long, however. As it turns out, when you’re wired up to compete (and win) it can be difficult to escape your own nature. “I always want to be good at what I do, so that’s always going to be important to me.”

STREETFUNK
JP Omari has always loved dancing. It’s an obsession which has flowed through his entire life, and taken the multi-awardwinning hip hop dancer, choreographer and teacher around the world. From being the first breakdancer to take part in a reality TV dance show to performing with artists like Dizzee Rascal, Sean Paul, and Orbital, he’s also made an impact on this blossoming scene with his own dance academy. Streetfunk seeks to train and inspire anyone, aged four and up, to hit the dancefloor. “For me, teaching and sharing my passion has been very important. Now with the studios we have the opportunity to train young people to a world-class level.” Based at the east end of the city, his Marina Studios is a set of dance spaces. These are connected by a corridor lined with trophies won by his crews. It’s an impressive haul - regionally, nationally, and internationally, they’ve won nearly every title open to them. This complex acts as a base for the growing Streetfunk network, which reaches out to over 650 students weekly. Through hip hop and funk dance styles it teaches the values of hard work, discipline, respect and, most of all, having fun. While fun is key, the more enthusiastic and skilled amongst the classes can also compete in regional, national, and international championships. Omari’s BN1 Crew secured the XM Under 18 Advanced title at the British Street Dance Championships last October. He admits they did exceptionally well. A decision was made to take part with only six weeks to prepare rather than wait another year. He says, “It did give a kick up the backside for them to keep going. But because of the way they are – individually they’re very driven kids – it was quite an organic process with how I taught them. They brought up really good ideas, so it was a group work.” Many of the crew members have been with Streetfunk for ten years, and their endeavours have taken to the world championships in Glasgow this month. They’ve reached a level which their coach proudly describes as: ‘unstoppable.’
But it isn’t just this crew making waves in the competitive street dance scene. The dancers from Streetfunk took home 32 trophies from those championships. At this pace, Omari is soon going to run out of space in his crews’ sprawling trophy collection. Defiance also snatched the XM Under 18 Intermediate title. “They won, even though they’re really under 14. They were bumped up… and still won!” While his Stereo-Shock came in at a worthy fourth in their division at the British Championships, Killer Bees under 12 crew found themselves performing in a division with kids much older than them, and still prevailed. “They’re a force to be reckoned with. They really made me emotional, they were just outstanding. Especially for their age, the stuff that they bring and the personality that they bring – they’re just phenomenal.” While the aim is to see some of his crews crowned world champions next month, Omari is also striving to make his Marina studio the definitive dance facility in the south east. It’s already acquired a fearsome reputation through the discipline and talent of both its pupils and teachers. “They put in so much time – all the kids, and the parents as well. They put time money, effort, everything. It’s a big commitment and a sacrifice. They come in to train whilst their friends are off at parties and stuff. But they’ve chosen to be here and work and be better.” His core members, aged seven and upwards, train as a crew for three and a half hours a week alongside two hours of normal classes - not to mention even more practice at home. It’s a lifestyle comparable to being an athlete. The Streetfunk community has had an undeniable effect on the quality of street dance in the region. Now, some of his crew members are at a level where they’ve become teachers themselves, rising through the ranks from student to assistant to instructor. Now, all the hard work the Streetfunk family has put in will be seen at Paddle Round the Pier on Sat 1 – Sun 2 July. After it’s enormously
successful debut of a dance stage last year, the Hartleys B-Boy Arena is set to host over 600 dancers. There’ll be street dance competitions and thrilling performances, with leading dance crews attending from across the south east. This is already proving to be one of the most successful new elements ever introduced at Paddle. Last month saw the annual [Straight Up] showcase event at Brighton Dome, where students showed off their skills alongside the UK’s leading B-Boy crew – Soul Mavericks. “Being able to fill out the Dome every year, is a great achievement. But it’s also a chance for the whole Streetfunk family, all the kids and all the parents, to come in and celebrate all the work the kids have been doing.” The ethos is to push and challenge themselves to become the best they can be. These classes do offer potential to become established in the wider industry. Older students have moved on to perform on The X Factor Live, Rihanna, and Little Mix tours, as well as a range of West End shows. “For me it’s about giving the opportunities they get here through competitions, classes and performances, but also training them to a level where this can become a career if they choose. I just want to them to be out there, doing what they love doing.” The Streetfunk family and their friends will be performing at the Hartleys B-Boy Arena when it comes to Paddle Round the Pier 2017. www.streetfunk.co.uk
Now, all the hard work the Streetfunk family has put in will be seen at Paddle Round the Pier on Sat 1 – Sun 2 July.

PADDLE ACCESS BEACH Introduced to the Paddle Round the Pier site back in 2010, the Access Beach has become a vital part of the event. Back then, the organisers felt perhaps it wasn’t enough just to hand over a cheque to charity at the end of the weekend - there was a need to bring complete disabled accessibility to the festival. Obviously this would have to include the sea itself. Working in conjunction with Surf Life Saving GB, Paddle now caters for disability groups as diverse as cerebral palsy sufferers, downs-syndrome, partially sighted/blind and those afflicted with chromosome deficiencies. Children and young people (and their carers), some who often have never been on the beach before, can now get easy and safe access to the sea. The Paddle staff work on a ratio of 3-1, enabling each child the support they need. Paddle even purchased new wetsuits and lifejackets for all the kids. Working with a large group of volunteers, Paddle borrows some equipment from the BHCC seafront office, including balloonwheeled wheelchairs which are specifically designed to travel across beaches and enter the water. The volunteers also construct
decking over the famous Brighton Beach pebbles to allow easy access and provide specific WC and changing facilities. “The Paddle Round the Pier event was really good and our young people enjoyed it immensely,” says Sophie Lynch, a Senior Care Officer with Brighton & Hove City Council’s Children’s Disability Service. “Your staff were incredibly enthusiastic and really sensitive to our young people’s needs. The amount of staff you were able to provide was fantastic and I don’t know how much experience they had with disabilities, but they took their lead from us and were happy to work with the young people. The equipment supplied suited our needs and we really enjoyed it. It gave the young people an opportunity they would otherwise not have had.”
Groups visiting Access Beach found they could enjoy the thrill of activities like surfing, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding dingy sailing, and yacht sailing. However, many visitors were content to simply experience the power of the waves – remember, most of these kids had never even been on a beach before, much less been able to go into the sea. An early patron of the Access Beach was Brighton & Hove Bus and Coach Company, continuing their mission to further build a working relationship with all their customers. A newly wrapped ‘Paddle Bus’ was unveiled this year, beautifully decorated in a retro-Hawaiian style featuring exotic flowers, palm trees and scenes of Brighton’s brilliant seafront. “We’re delighted to be supporting the Access Beach for the third year running,” said Martin Harris, Managing Director of the Brighton & Hove Bus and Coach Company. “We’re keen for everyone in the whole city to be able to get involved in the fun and activities of this great beach festival”. Once again there will be a Brighton & Hove bus parked up alongside the Access Beach for the whole Paddle festival weekend. It is hoped that parents and carers will be able to take this opportunity to consult with the company on how they can continue to improve and develop their services to aid access for all. If the Paddle Access Beach sounds like it could benefit you or someone you know, or if you’d like to get involved, then please get in touch with us. We love to hear from carers or group leaders who think our facilities could make a difference in someone’s life. As well as this, we always need more volunteers - specifically to support the kids on the beach. It’s probably one of the most rewarding things we do at Paddle Round the Pier!
