Cania Gorge National Park is the closest park to the coast in which you can see the sandstone landscapes of Central Queensland. Discover the incredible natural beauty of the area where dramatic ochre coloured sandstone rock formations overlook lush forest gullies. Visitors enjoy an amazing variety of scenery, wildlife and history. Aboriginal people have lived in Cania Gorge for at least 19,000 years. Freehand art on remote sandstone walls is a reminder of their special way of life.
Location From Monto, travel 12km north on the (A3) Australia’s Country Way. Branch off onto the sealed Cania Road for 14km passing through the small settlement of Moonford.
Facilities Picnic shelters, barbecues, interpretive display, public toilets and car parking are provided at the Cania Gorge Picnic Area.
Camping Not permitted in the Park. Two caravan parks and holiday cottages nearby provide accommodation to suit all budgets.
Walking Trails Within the 21,931 hectare park there are a variety of walking tracks ranging in length from 300m to 22km. Choose walks that suit your fitness level. Walks include Shamrock Mine: This easy Class 2 1.4km return walk (allow 45 minutes) takes an historic look at the former mine site. It begins at the northern car park, about 1km south of Lake Cania. Here lie the remains of the old battery, mine shaft, processing sheds and mullock heaps. Gold fossicking is not permitted. On returning, spend time at the information shelter discovering some of the trials of living in the goldfields.
Mount Walsh National Park Rising to 703m above sea level, Mount Walsh National Park is a rugged park with spectacular exposed granite outcrops and cliffs. The “Bluff” area of Mount Walsh, at the park’s northern end, is a prominent landmark in the Biggenden area.
Location 84km west of Maryborough and 50km south west of Childers. Turn off the Maryborough-Biggenden Road 2km east of Biggenden or 79km west of Maryborough. Travel a further 5.3km along the signposted National Park Road to the picnic area.
Facilities Picnic or barbecue below The Bluff. A shelter shed, toilets, cold showers, barbecue and tank water are provided in the local council picnic ground next to the park.

Walking Trails Most of this rugged park is suitable only for experienced, well-equipped bushwalkers with sound bush skills. WARNING: Granite rocks are slippery when wet. A 300m trail leads from the picnic area through open forest to a rocky creek gully fringed with dry rainforest. Continue 200m to the treeline for views over the surrounding countryside. Only experienced walkers should attempt the 2.5 hour hike to the summit of Mt Walsh.
Big Foot Walk: Allow about 20 minutes for this 1km short trail Class 3 that features a large brown image of a four-toed foot on the white sandstone cliff. Castle Mountain: From the picnic area follow the 800m Bloodwood Cave track to the Castle Mountain track turnoff. Climb the steep 200m track to the Gorge Lookout for a lovely view down the gorge. From here a 10km fire trail winds through open woodland to Castle Mountain lookout. The view from this lookout is a just reward after the long walk up. Return via the same track.

The 405 hectare park features caves, rock pools and superb scenery and provides recreational activities including bush walking, swimming and rock climbing. When the river runs, it cascades over huge salmon coloured boulders as it winds through the park.
Location 225km west of Maryborough and 40km south-west of Mundubbera. Travel 13km south along the Mundubbera-Durong Road to the Hawkwood Road intersection. Turn west along the Hawkwood Road for about 20km until you reach the Auburn River National Park turn-off. Drive a further 7km to the park along an unsealed road. Conventional vehicle access is possible. Four-wheel-drive is recommended in wet weather. Stay on the road, as soils are treacherous when wet.
Facilities Picnic tables, gas barbecue and toilet facilities are provided on the northern bank of the Auburn River in a picturesque bush setting.
Camping A basic camping area is provided. Camping permits required and fees apply.
Walking Trails Walks begin from the picnic and camping area. The following track classification system is based on Australian Standards:
12
Gorge Lookout: 600m return (allow about 15 minutes) Class 3. This short stroll boasts impressive views across the river bed. Leave from the end of the carpark and walk the short distance to the unexpected Auburn River Gorge. Look for the “Giant’s Chair” from the lookout or for a peregrine falcon’s nest — easily detected because of the telltale signs of “whitewash” marks on the cliff face below a collection of sticks and debris which make up the nest. This is a naturally occurring lookout — there are no handrails. Please supervise children at all times, especially near cliff tops. Riverbed and Rockpools: 1.5km return (allow about 1 hour) Class 5. This is a strenuous walk and should only be attempted by fit walkers. Leaving the picnic and camping area, this rough track winds down the side of the gorge to the river bed, taking you through dry rainforest, eucalypt forest and creek vegetation. Notice the swollen trunks of the dominant bottle trees along the way. Take time to observe the immediate area to ensure you will be able to find the trail on your return. Take care when walking on wet rock surfaces, as they can be slippery.
Coalstoun Lakes National Park
Rising 200m above a broad cultivated valley, Mt Le Brun, an extinct volcano, contains two large craters which fill as shallow lakes. Formed more than 600,000 years ago, the mountain is one of the youngest volcanic formations in Australia. Protected by Coalstoun Lakes National Park, the lakes were named after Coalstoun in Scotland by Wade Brun, manager of nearby Ban Ban Station.
Location Turn off the Isis Highway 20km south of Biggenden or 4km north of Coalstoun Lakes township into Crater Lakes Road. Follow the gravel track to the base of the northern crater.
Exploring With no facilities, this park is for bird watching and nature study. Leave your car at the base of the mountain and walk up the steep outer side of the crater for views of the crater and vine forest.

BIGGENDEN
The top floor of the former Paradise Court House was relocated to Biggenden after the Paradise Goldfield was exhausted. It became Biggenden’s police station and courthouse and is now the home to the Biggenden Museum. The Museum promotes the history of Biggenden and the surrounding district with displays of historical items and contains photographs and memorabilia collected since its opening. A new shed houses farming implements and items pertaining to the outdoors and life on the land.
Beiers Park Mt. Walsh is the backdrop for this beautifully landscaped park which is home to the metal art sculputure - ‘The Pioneer’ which depicts the early settlers as men of iron and represents past industries.
Waterfall Creek Rock Pools, Utopia The first of its kind in Australia, Chowey Bridge was constructed for the railways and opened in 1905. The concrete bridge, located around 18km west of Biggenden is supported by a main 27m concrete arch and a number of smaller arches. An interpretive plaque featuring photos of the bridge under construction has been placed at the Chowey Bridge site. There are picnic facilities nearby and it is an ideal place to experience the quietness of the bush. The nearest public toilets are at Degilbo 15km towards Biggenden.

How to get there: Take the Isis Highway towards Ban Ban Springs, turn left into Lords Road 6.4 km south-west along the Isis Highway. After 5 km the good dirt road divides, with one way leading to Glengariff bush camping grounds. The other 10 km leads to Coongarra Rock, is steep and conditions deteriorate after rain so care should be taken at all times. 4WD only. Facilities: There are no amenities here. Bring your own water. There is limited phone reception except on the summit of Coongarra Rock. Permits are required from National Parks for camping.

These impressive rock pools are in the southern part of the Mt Walsh National Park. Following rain the quite deep pools cascade over the rocky surface creating a natural slide and an excellent place to cool down on a hot day.

Travel 2.5 km along this road, turn right into the good dirt Utopia Road for 7 km to the second car park marked Mt Walsh National Park. Facilities: There are no facilities here. Open fires are not permitted. Fuel stove only. Camping requires permits from National Parks. There is no mobile phone reception in this area. While there is usually water, it is recommended that you bring your own drinking water. Please take out all your rubbish. Walking trails: From the car park an old 4WD road and a narrow track leads for 30 minutes of easy walking to the rock pools. Care needs to be taken if the rock is wet as it is very slippery. As the pools are quite deep a strong swimming ability is recommended. Please leave the place as beautiful as you found it.
History Gold was discovered in the 1880s and Biggenden grew as a service town to the short-lived gold fields at Paradise and Shamrock. ‘The Pioneer’ metal art sculpture is situated in the attractive Beiers Park in Biggenden and is a must to view. Created by artist Dave Machen from Bundaberg, the sculpture depicts the history of early settlement of the town and surrounding districts.
BIGGENDEN
Biggenden
Walking trails: It is possible to climb Coongarra Rock, but it should only be attempted by experienced and fit bush walkers. The very steep track to the summit is found a further 1.2 km along the closed road. For others the Rock is just as impressive from the base.
The sculpture alludes to the remnants of old work sites where the decayed state of history is often found. The old barrow is a common find throughout the Biggenden area around closed mines, cattle properties and old timber yards. The figure has been developed in the same manner - the men of iron who battled for survival.

Location
Gayndah Racecourse
Zonhoven Park
Gayndah is situated on the Great Dividing Range 323 km north west of Brisbane and easily reached from the many coastal resorts.
Gayndah was the headquarters of the first Queensland Jockey Club and the venue for Queensland’s first Derby in 1868. Gayndah Racecourse was also home to the North Australia Jockey Club and the first Ladies Side Saddle Race in 1880. This historic track is still in use today for gazetted race meetings.
Named in honour of Gayndah’s sister city in Belgium, this park offers well shaded picnic areas, views of the river and nearby citrus orchards and provides facilities including public toilets and a dump valve for motorhomes.
Archer’s Lookout
Sheep and mining brought settlers into the area, but it was the drier, less humid climate, rich volcanic and alluvial soils and plenty of sunshine that set the area up as a prime citrus growing centre and is popular during the cooler months of May to August with local and visiting fruit pickers.
Services Supermarkets, pharmacy, banking, hospital, post office, fuel outlets, variety of shops and real estate.
MUST SEE & DO Heritage Listed Buildings Gayndah lays claim to being the oldest town in Queensland and was first settled in 1849 maintaining its old fashioned charm today. Several buildings have been heritage listed including Mellors Drapery (one of the few buildings in Australia which still uses a ‘flying fox’ to deal with transactions), old section of the State School, Gayndah Soldier’s Memorial Hall (Town Hall and Council Chambers), Racecourse and several rail bridges.
McConnell Lookout Drive 7 km north of town and turn left at Mount Debateable Road. Continue another 7km. The drive up to the lookout, situated on Mount Gayndah, is well worth it with panoramic views of the beautiful Burnett River, flanked on both sides by many large citrus orchards, and to the south and west, huge tracts of farmland. The steep 2km climb is not suitable for caravans, however caravan parking is provided at the entrance.

Gayndah Museum The Museum is one of the finest in Queensland and exhibits the renowned static and live display of the history of the Queensland Lungfish known as ‘Ceratodus’. This display was produced by the Queensland Museum believing this was the appropriate place for the display as Gayndah was the centre of scientific studies surrounding the Lungfish. While only found alive in the Mary and Burnett Rivers, Lungfish fossils have been found all over the world. Dr Thomas Bancroft of Eidsvold undertook early studies into the Ceratodus and from this study believed the fish to be in great danger of extinction. The State Government, in an act of early conservation, placed a full protection order on the species in 1914. Time your visit for one of the working days and see a steam powered sawmill operating. The Museum comprises several restored buildings which have grown around the heritage listed Georgian brick cottage built in 1864. These buildings house a most comprehensive collection of memorabilia and historic relics including an old motorised rail ambulance used in the 40’s and 50’s.
Gayndah Art Gallery Part of the old St Joseph’s Convent is home to the Gayndah Art Gallery at 34 Meson Street. Opening hours are Tuesday to Friday 10am to 2pm and weekends 10am to 4pm.
Archer’s Lookout sits on one of Gayndah’s twin hills known affectionately as “The Duke” and “The Duchess” providing an excellent perspective of the town and district.

Stone Pitched Bridges
Road. The bridges are no longer suitable to take traffic; however, they still stand honouring the people who toiled to make them the memorable feature they are today.
History Originally founded in 1848, the town takes its name from Eidsvoll, Norway where the European settlers, Thomas and Charles Archer came from. They established large stations which they called Eidsvold and Coonambula. In the 1880’s, Eidsvold emerged as a bustling gold mining town supporting a population of over 2000 with 15 hotels catering for thirsty diggers. The area developed as a hub for citrus, agriculture, timber and cattle. The town and surrounding region offers visitors a rich tapestry of Australian heritage and proud bush traditions together with a wealth of indigenous culture, wildlife and natural beauty.

Monto Monto is the most northern and youngest town in the North Burnett and is situated approximately 200 kilometres west of the coastal cities of Bundaberg and Gladstone.
Services Supermarkets, pharmacy, hospital, medical centre, banking, australia post, fuel and a variety of shops.
MUST SEE & DO Cultural and Historic Complex and Museum Reserve Located on Flinders Street, you will find a variety of historical displays including memorabilia on Monto’s Olympic Welterweight representative, an outstanding mineral collection and the ‘Rainmaker’ mozaic. Art and craft exhibitions are held regularly. View local artifacts and machinery that have been donated by the community and preserved and restored by the members of the Historical Society.
MONTO
Lister Street Artwalk Enjoy a picnic, barbecue or takeaway lunch and stroll along the Artwalk in the beautifully landscaped Lister Street Parkland. View the metal and sandstone sculptures created by local and regional artists.
Monto Town Hall Built in 1939-40, the Art Deco style Town Hall is of particular architectural merit. Hall and Phillips were the architects. Hall was one of Brisbane’s most successful architects of the
32
early 20th century who designed the Brisbane City Hall, Tattersall’s Club and Sandgate Town Hall.
The Mulgildie Bunyip This sculpture relates to the many and varied legends of the Bunyip Hole. Aboriginals tell the story of fearsome booming monsters that inhabit swamps and waterholes. Just ten minutes from the township of Mulgildie lies the legendary Bunyip Hole, a place of mystery and intrigue. Over the years, tales have emerged of strange noises, bubbling, churning water in the hole and of cattle disappearing into the depths as they drank. Known as ‘Devil Devil’ country, Aboriginal tribes and drovers too, could not be persuaded to camp near the Bunyip Hole. Some Aboriginal Elders believe the Bunyip Hole is connected to a vast network of underground caverns passing Tellebang Mountain and stretching as far as Ban Ban Springs. The mystery of the Bunyip Hole may never be known. (There are no facilities at the Bunyip Hole).
Historic Monal Goldfields and Cemetery Explore the abandoned machinery, a testament to the original settlers who dared to settle in this inhospitable range country. Even now it is a tough drive to get there. View the stone memorial at the Monal Cemetery constructed using the wheels from the boiler that was pulled to the site by a team of 52 horses and is dedicated to the memory of the settlers and teamsters without whom the area could not have been settled.
Coominglah State Forest Enjoy a bushland drive, picnic and majestic views, all in the company of colourful native plants, animals and birds. There are no water or toilet facilities. The nearest toilet is at the rest area, close to the State Forest entrance, 19 km north from Monto, just off the Burnett Highway. While there are no walking tracks within Coominglah State Forest, you can stretch your legs at the Hurdle Gully Lookout and enjoy a long view into the valley of Three Moon Creek, across to the Mulgildie Plateau and the Burnett River catchment. The lookout has an interpretive display, picnic tables and small parking area.
Kalpowar State Forest Patches of dense rainforest with towering hoop pines remain between open eucalypt forests and hoop pine plantations. Picnic or camp in a tranquil bush setting beside Crane Creek. Camping permits are required and fees apply. From Monto travel 37 km north-east on the Monto–Gladstone Road to the turn-off to Kalpowar State Forest. The gravel access road to the State Forest is accessible by conventional vehicle, caravans and motor homes.
Three Moon Creek Legend There are many varied versions of how the Three Moon Creek was named. One account tells of a traveller who was passing through the area or a Shepherd set up camp and at nightfall went to the creek to fill his billy. As he drew the water from the creek, he caught a glimpse of the reflection of the moon in the billy as well as in the creek and then looked up to see the moon in the sky. Another legend refers to an Aboriginal stockman being asked to come back
in three months for more work. Not understanding fully, it was agreed that he return after three full moons.
History White settlement is said to have started in 1850 with AH Trevethan taking up land that became known as Rawbelle Station. This was the first of a number of large sheep properties to be settled in the next ten years. The goldfields of Cania and Monal were operating and towns had developed around these deposits.
MONTO
Location
The township of Monto came into existence in 1924 as a consequence of the Land Development Scheme. A few very large properties were resumed to provide prime agricultural land for returning soldiers and pioneer settlers. Construction of the first town buildings commenced around 1926 and in 1931 the railway was officially opened. Clark Bartlett was one of the early pioneers and his hut is on display at Cania together with a miniature of the old Cania Goldfields. 33
Scenic Drive Circuit distance 57km 4WD recommended 2WD in dry weather only. Take the Burnett Highway from Monto towards Biloela. After 19 km look for the sign to Hurdle Gully Lookout and rest area. Turn left into the rest area. This is the last toilet facility on the drive. Head towards Hurdle Gully Lookout along Kington Road. The road winds through sclerophyll forest, predominantly eucalypt and spotted gum Corymbia citriodora, with tall shrub and grass understorey. Take a break at the Hurdle Gully Lookout—10.6 km from the rest area— and enjoy the view into the valley of Three Moon Creek, across to the Mulgildie Plateau and further to the catchment of the Burnett River. The lookout has a small interpretive display, picnic tables and parking area. There is no water or toilet at this site or anywhere else along the drive. Cania Dam
To get back to the southern end of the A3 Burnett Highway at Mulgildie, turn right at the T-intersection of Hurdle Gully Road and Airport Road, then turn left into the unsealed Evans Road.
Coominglah to Cania drive including Hurdle Gully lookout Please visit www.nprsr.qld.gov.au for detailed information on the Forest and other drives. Before visiting, download and print off the Coominglah State Forest map (PDF, 84K)* and have it in the car travelling through Coominglah.

If conditions are dry, continue driving south-west along Davies Road onto Scrubby Road and left into Hurdle Gully Road. Sections along this part of the road are steep and in wet weather can be hazardous. The road winds through Hurdle Gully Scrub—one of the last remaining patches of dry rainforest of its type in Queensland and perhaps the world—and continues to the State Forest boundary and on to Airport Road. Turn left at the T-intersection to continue along Airport Road—a sealed country road—to Monto.

Location Set at the foot of Mount Perry and nestled within the Boolboonda and Normanby Ranges, the township of Mount Perry is located 450kms north-west of Brisbane and 100km west of Bundaberg.
Services General Store, Australia Post, Health Centre and fuel.
MUST SEE & DO Pat Augustine Cultural Centre The Centre houses a historical display, art gallery and public library. The display includes photographs of Mount Perry district dating back to the late 1800s and information relating to businesses and families. The Art Gallery is operated by the Mount Perry Fine Arts Group and artists from around Queensland hold exhibitions in the gallery.
Smelter ‘Slag Heap’ Mining Site Mount Perry is famous for its copper and more recently gold mining. View the Copper Smelter site (slag heap) formed from remnants of the copper mines in the early 1900’s. A display board has been mounted on the site depicting the mines, miners and details of the copper industry.
Normanby and Schuh Lookouts Enjoy the rugged mountain country scenery which can be viewed from the Normanby and Schuh Lookouts. The Normanby Lookout is located on Normanby Range Road off Towns Creek Road from the Gin Gin Mount Perry Road. From here you overlook the Mount Perry township and the surrounding countryside. There are picnic tables and a Directional Dial for you to get your bearings. Schuh’s Lookout is located on Schuhs Road off the Monto Mount Perry Road at the top of the range. From here you overlook to the south of Mount Perry. There is a picnic table provided.
Reflect on the past at the Mount Perry Bicentennial Museum which features a working blacksmith’s shop, a variety of memorabilia including an old fire engine, cart and other pieces of local historical significance. Located next door is the historic Madsen’s Kitchen which shows just how different life used to be. The Mt Perry Museum proudly boasts one of only three known Queensland restored and working Three Pole Gold Stamper and Curvilinear Concentrator Tables. The Committee regularly hold open days, or will start the stamper up upon request.
Boolboonda Tunnel One of the most interesting sights in the area is the Boolboonda Tunnel. Despite the fact that it extends 192m into the rock, it is unlined and unsupported. In fact it has the dubious distinction of being the longest unsupported man-made tunnel in the Southern Hemisphere. The tunnel was originally built in 1883 for the railway line between Bundaberg and Mount Perry to service the copper mines. Now it is home to a colony of bent-winged bats and used to access residential properties.
Heritage Walk Follow the Heritage Walk to relive some of Mount Perry’s history. Heritage trail brochures are available from most business houses and Council’s Administration Office.
Wolca Reserve Situated on Bania Road, Wolca Reserve provides toilet and showering amenities and waste recepticles. Pets are permitted on leads. A permit to camp is required and available from Council’s Administration Office. Fees apply.

Memorial Park A great place for a rest stop and picnic with playground equipment and public amenities including showers. Across the road in Maynard Park, a World War I Turkish 37mm Field Gun No. 648 that was captured by the Australian Light Horse is on display. It is registered in the Australian War Memorial Register of War Trophies as # K76. Across the street from Memorial Park stands one of Mount Perry’s pride and joys - the majestic Leopard A5.1 Main Battle Tank. This tank is one of thirty such tanks gifted by the Commonwealth of Australia to various Veteran organisations throughout Australia. The Leopard A5.1 Main Battle Tank entered service with the Royal Australian Armoured Corps in 1977 and was withdrawn from service in 2007.
History Settlement began in the late 1840’s with the taking up of large sheep grazing stations. Sheep gave way to cattle due to the spread of spear grass after the big mobs ate out the natural grasses. Mount Perry is famous for its copper and more recently gold mining. Mining activity began in the 1860’s. The discovery of rich copper deposits led to a boom as news of the strike spread. As the land was cleared for mining operations it spawned another industry timber, which was used by the mines and for housing. Good stands of pine, cedar and hardwoods attracted many timber getters who used their horse and bullock teams to snig out and haul the logs that had been cut from the ranges.
