This years racing will be held on Sunday, July 9th with time trials starting at 1:00pm and racing beginning at 2:00pm. Be sure to get there early as these races tend draw a rather large crowd. Lawnmower racing is a motorsport in which competitors race modified, ride -on lawnmowers. The original motor is retained, but the blades are removed for safety. The sport attracts all ages and is usually entered into in a spirit of fun rather than extreme competitiveness, though many do take it quite seriously. All profits from admission go to help support the local volunteer fire department and the Territorial Days Community Park.

2017 Citizen of the Year/ Grand Marshall Charlie Swift, Jr. Lieutenant Commander. He worked on the development and deployment of the first submarine launched cruise missile, the Regulus 1. Along the way he served on nine different submarines. His final duty station was in Portland, Oregon, where he served as the commander of the USS Rasher, a reserve diesel fleet submarine that was permanently moored at Swan Island and used to train navy reservists on weekends and during the summer.

Amboy Territorial Days Grand Marshal and Citizen of the Year for 2017 is Charlie Swift Jr. Born in 1928 in San Jose, California, to Charlie Sr. and Esther Swift, he has lived in the Amboy and Yacolt area for 50 years. Charlie grew up, along with his two older sisters, Justine and Eleanor, at various places in northern California as the family moved around to find work. He was an outdoor, mechanical minded kid who got into his fair share of youthful trouble. He remembers several times being chased by his mother, armed with a willow switch she wasn’t afraid to use. At one point the family dog “Drum” was called to retrieve Charlie as he ran away to avoid oncoming punishment. The large dog rapidly chased him down and grabbed him by the pants leg and sat down to wait for adult backup. In 1948, at the age of 19, he decided, along with a friend, to enlist in the Navy. Taking some good advice, he took advanced training in electronics and found his niche. He volunteered for submarine duty and busily started repairing and maintaining radars and sonars and every other electronic device proliferating across the fleet. He advanced fast enough that in 1957 he entered OCS (Officer Candidate School) and eventually retired in 1969 at the rank of

Upon his posting to Portland he brought his family along from San Diego to settle in his hoped for retirement spot. Although the family had lived a suburban lifestyle until then, he wanted to get out of the city. So in 1966 they moved to Yacolt, and by March of 1967 moved into the large white farmhouse between Yacolt and Amboy that everyone knew as, “the old Weimer place.” Charlie loved it! He had a barn, a workshop, a woodshed, a large farmhouse, and a tractor, especially the tractor. His beloved wife Retha had a garden, and the kids had chores. He immediately began to integrate into country life. He bought a cow and a steer. His father gave him a horse. He rapidly learned about firewood as the family quickly burned up a season’s worth in only a few months trying to stay warm. For the first three years Charlie continued serving in the Navy while commuting at reckless speed down the river road to Portland and back. The rest of the family, consisting of his wife, Retha, and four children, Christopher, Elois, Alexis, and Stephen, began adjusting to country life, which consisted of animals, pets, chores, school, and more chores. The kids had never ridden a school bus before. The family appreciated having a driveway large enough for the never before seen bookmobile to make regular stops. After retirement from the service, Charlie worked in real estate for about ten years specializing in anything he could sell. He served on the school board at Yacolt Elementary School. At last he had the opportunity to regularly hunt and fish while filling his spare time with various outdoor projects.

After his years of real estate work Charlie found his true passion, tree farming. Although he had raised a few cattle, a few sheep, a few pigs, a goat, and a few horses, these pursuits slowly dwindled away as he pursued tree farming, as well as buying and maintaining the old mechanical equipment he used to do the job. If it had an engine that ran, he didn’t much care what it looked like. In the 1980s he and Retha built their dream house on the hill behind the white farmhouse. Being gregarious, he met most of the local community and befriended many. In turn he benefited from their help on various projects, or just sharing local hunting spots. He learned to fly and bought a small plane he based in Chelatchie Prairie. Everyone was welcome for a ride. His 85 year old mother, Esther, who moved to town after her husband died, loved her flight around the Mt St. Helens volcano.

Over the years Charlie has been a regular participant in the Amboy Territorial Days parade, running various old classic vehicles. When the Yacolt Community Church was being remodeled he brought his old self-loading log truck to town and used his hoist to lift the roof trusses. Any time he arranged a picnic down at his favorite spot on Cedar Creek most anyone he ran into that day would be invited. He joined the Friends of the Cedar Creek Grist Mill association and helped restore and run their equipment for special events. He donated a good share of apples from his trees for the fall Cider Pressing event. After Retha passed away in 2004 he soldiered on with the help of family and friends and always had another project in mind. In 2009 Charlie was voted “Clark County Tree Farmer of the Year,” by the Clark County Farm Forestry Association. In 2014 he rode in a horse drawn wagon as the Grand Marshall of the Yacolt Fourth of July Rendezvous. At 88 years young, life has slowed down for Charlie, and yet it’s still true that everyone seems to know him. Where ever he goes, from a store to a restaurant to a parking lot, it’s not uncommon to hear the call, “Well hello Charlie!”

Volunteerism A willingness of interested persons working together to make a difference. No pay or special treatment. Just kind words of thank you! Good job your presence has helped make community projects a safer and fun place to be. Many time egos tend to give those volunteers a message as to why do we want to be a party to criticism or verbal bad mouthing! As a rule of thumb volunteers need direction, leaders and congratulations. As sometimes some people have better communication, skills and different times to participate. To make projects work there needs to be a team leader that is willing to listen and follow the consensus of the board and elected members, as change or disagreements needs to be worked out at these meetings so that no one is stepping on toes. Always keep in mind that communication, budgeted expenses, and follow through make for better control and future expansion of our park and community. Thank you, Len Williams

Rick Malinowski The 2016 Bull of the Woods is Rick Malinowski of Yacolt. Rick was born in Aberdeen Washington on July 31, 1940 to Henry and Ruby Malinowski. Rick has two children, Kim and Matt. Risk married Beth Gillette from Yacolt in 1967 and they have one son, Reuben, who was born in 1971. Rick’s father, Henry Malinowski was known throughout the Pacific Northwest as an extremely talented line machine operator in many different capacities. Henry began to pass on his knowledge to Rick at a very young age. Rick began going to work with his father on a regular basis and helping out where ver he could and spending a good amount with a clamshell bucket as early as 11 years old. Rick graduated from Battle Ground High School in 1959 and went to work for his father Henry, stripping overburden and digging the first rock from the Courtney Pit near Amboy. The pit is still in operation by the North Clark Construction Company. The local economy turned bad in 1960 and Rick went to work for Ben Thomas from Woodland and then returned to Aberdeen in 1961. Rick worked around Aberdeen buying salvage cedar sales, splitting shake and shingle bolts and fence posts to make ends meet, Then Rick took a job for Mayr Brothers of Hoquiam Washington, setting chokers. After a few weeks, the shovel operator on that side quit and side rod Ralph Blaine was told that young Rick Malinowski could run that shovel so he gave him a shot at the job. Rick did well and finished out that season in the TL 21 Washington Log Loader. This machine was extremely large for use in big old growth timber. Only five were ever manufactured.

After that season ended, Rick bought a log truck and worked for a stint and then returned to Mayr Brothers running a 750 American shovel. At this time Mayr Brothers were making the transition from using tongs to grapples to load with. Many operators of that era struggled with the concept of a grapple, Rick however, already knowing how to operate a clamshell bucket, took right to running grapples. In 1963, Rick went to work for Ketchikan Pulp Company which began a whirlwind of jobs consisting of nine different companies, spanning three states. Rick returned to Amboy and went to work for Clarence Anrys running shovel under side rod, Mickey Goble and stayed on until 1969 when he went to work for brother-in-law Cyril Gillette running a new 45 Lima shovel. In 1973 Rick went to work for Portway Logging in Toledo Washington, running shovel and was quickly promoted to side rod and was looking after 4-Yarder sides. Rick remained there off-anon throughout the seventies. In 1979 Rick and Beth returned to Yacolt and Rick went to work for Jensen and Grove under John Lynch out of Woodland running shovel and driving log truck. While shoveling snow off the roof of the family home in the winter of 1980, Rick got a phone call to go to Guadalajara Mexico for a short stint to train shovel operators for a new lumber company starting there. Rick went to Portland and got familiar with the machine that was being shipped down there and then hopped a plan and was logging in Mexico! Rick stayed there until operators were trained and then returned home. That spring, Rick was hired to work for Don Brown at the operation at Rowan Bay Alaska. Beth took the job as camp school teacher and the family remained there until the logging was finished and the camp closed down in

1984. Rick was transferee to the Lab Bay operations returning home to Yacolt in 1985. Rick then purchased a used 999 American shovel and went back to work for himself, contract loading for many different operations in the area. In 1990, the Spotted Owl was making life for the logger very difficult in the area and Rick was running out of work for his shovel so Rick returned to Alaska to work for Ketchikan Pulp until returning home in 1992. Rick returned to Alaska in 1993 to subcontract for ITT Rayonier and stayed near Fairbanks for two seasons. Upon returning home the construction business was booming and Rick worked for several contractors before going back to work for himself doing stream restoration work in Washington, Oregon and California. When Tapani Underground won the bid to rebuild one of the jetties near Long Beach, they hired Rick to run the 1200 Hitachi Excavator to handle the giant rocks for this special project. Rick remained there for five years doing large scale earth moving projects. In 2008, Rick made his final trek to Alaska to work for longtime friend, Mike Rotschy on Zarembo Island.

All ages are invited to come join in the fun –whether it’s your 1st time or your 55th time. The 2016 parade was Terrific! So come join the fun and have a good time you are sure to find a category (there are 18) that is prefect for your entry. The parade is proudly Sponsored by Dan’s Tractor, Inc. This year’s theme is: “Honoring Those Who Serve.” The parade will start in the front of Amboy Middle School on NE Chelatchie Rd at 10:00 am, Saturday, July 8th & will wind its way down Hwy 503 to the Park. Everyone along the parade route loves watching the parade, getting to see old friends & making new ones as it passes by. To get an entry go to the local area businesses & pick one up or you can go to the Territorial Days Park page at www.tdays.org to download this year’s form. Entries will be judged on: Theme, Effort, Originality, & Overall Appeal. Our thanks goes out to The Reflector for their donation to the parade also. So come to Amboy and make some new memories!!!

This year’s parade will be Fantastic because of all of you!!

The Chainsaw King Returns! Legendary chainsaw carving artist Bob King returns to Amboy Territorial Days for live demonstrations of his carving skills. Bob is a member of the ECHO-USA carving team, and in 2010 Bob was recognized with a plaque in the Carvers Walk of Fame (Mulda, Germany) for winning more chainsaw carving competitions than anyone else in the world. In addition to his demonstrations, Bob will be making six carvings while he’s here. Those carvings will be auctioned off to support the park. We are extremely excited to have Bob participating in this year’s Territorial Days Celebration. Bob and his #1 fan, his wife Cindy, currently live in Edgewood Washington though they travel all over the world carving in competitions and exhibitions. Bob was raised in Reedsport, OR. He spent 8 years in the USAF as a non destructive tester on aircraft, Spent a couple years working in the same field at Exotic Metals Forming company and Boeing. In 1998 he stated carving after seeing other carvers at a fair. He’s been giving trees a second life ever since, or as he likes to say “he enjoys making fancy firewood”. Check out Bob’s work on Facebook or at his website. He will have sculptures for sale while he’s here, or you can always order from his website.
