NIEUWS 3 CONCRETE DESIGN COMPETITION THIS YEAR, THE FIFTH EDITION OF THE CONCRETE DESIGN COMPETITION IS DEDICATED TO THE THEME OF ‘ENERGY’. ALL STUDENTS INTERESTED IN DESIGNING WITH THE INHERENT CHARACTERISTICS OF CONCRETE AND THE POTENTIAL OF THE MATERIAL IN RELATION TO ENERGY, PLEASE PAY ATTENTION! THE OFFICIAL KICK-OFF PROGRAM OF THE COMPETITION WILL BE ORGANIZED AT THE BERLAGE ROOM ON OCTOBER 6TH. BK CITY — The Concrete Design Competition is a biennial international student design competition, that tries to encourage a research based design approach with the aim to further develop the potentials of the use of concrete.

This year's theme is definitely relevant since energy has become one of the main issues in the architectural debate on sustainable building. “Although one might think that concrete is not the most sustainable building material available, there are certainly opportunities for innovation in order to make concrete useful for 'energy-aware' applications”, emphasizes Henri van Bennekom, assistent professor at the chair of Materialisation and co-organizer of this kick-off event. This explains as well why the competition requests all participants to explore the

potential of core properties like mass, volume, surface textures and mixtures without having any restrictions in terms of scale, location or program. “One can choose a context of preference and the design proposals may range from furniture and architectural details to landscape interventions and infrastructural systems”, explains Van Bennekom.

PROJECTING ARCHITECTURE IT´S THAT TIME OF THE YEAR AGAIN, WHEN ARCHITECTURE AND FILM BUFFS ALIKE CAN SIT BACK AND ENJOY THE FLICKERING IMAGES ON THE SILVER SCREEN DURING THE ARCHITECTURE FILM FESTIVAL ROTTERDAM, FROM THE 6TH TILL THE 9TH OF OCTOBER. ROTTERDAM — The AFFR is the largest of it´s kind, a festival completely devoted to bringing together various films that comment on our built environment.

This edition’s main theme, Think Big/Act Small, is very relevant, not only to the fields of architecture and urban development, but to all areas of our lives that have been affected by the global economic crisis. We have entered a new frontier in which both our financial and natural resources are dwindling while our problems seem to multiply in scope and size. A new approach is required.

The selected films will showcase a new movement, in which various protagonists try to realize ambitious goals through relatively modest means.

Klaar voor de start...

Afgelopen vrijdag was de officiële start van de BK graduate school (Graduate School Architecture and the Built Environment, met de grappige, maar doeltreffende afkorting A + BE). De graduate school is opgericht als onderdeel van de TU brede Graduate School. Doel van de graduate school is kortgezegd het verbeteren van het promotieklimaat aan de TU-Delft: verbetering van opleiding en begeleiding van de PhD-studenten.

De startbijeenkomst was een feestelijke, informatieve bijeenkomst in de Oost-Serre. De rector, Karel Luyben, verrichtte de officiële openingshandeling.

Ik hoop trouwens dat hij geen blijvende gehoorschade heeft opgelopen door het zeer luide startschot dat hij loste. Tijdens zijn toespraak wees hij op het belang van de PhD-studenten voor de universiteit. Onderzoek maakt dat we een universiteit zijn en de PhD-studenten vormen bij het doen van onderzoek een onmisbare schakel. Een belangrijke constatering lijkt mij, waar niet iedereen dagelijks bij stilstaat.

Het hoge aantal Bsc en Msc studenten van de faculteit leidt ertoe dat de onderwijsdruk hoog is en het onderzoek in de verdrukking kan komen. Iets dat we te allen tijde dienen te voorkomen. Ook vanwege de veranderende financiële context verdient de wijze waarop we onderzoek aanpakken onze extra aandacht. De rechtstreekse financiering vanuit het ministerie neemt af. Deelname aan NWO- en Europees gefinancierde programma’s en de werving van PhD’s met een beurs is voor de faculteit van groot belang.

De Graduate School kan ons helpen op deze veranderende context in te spelen. Het helpt ons bij de internationale positionering van ons onderzoek, het verbeteren van het onderzoeksklimaat en de werving, opleiding en begeleiding van goede promovendi . Belangrijk is echter wel dat we er als faculteit invulling aan geven. Ook om die reden juich ik de oprichting van de Graduate School al toe. Het kan onderzoekers van de gehele faculteit bij elkaar brengen. De Graduate School is niet alleen een feestje van “centraal” of van Frank van der Hoeven, onderzoeksdirecteur BK , initiatiefnemer en ontwerper van A+BE. Het raamwerk staat, nu de invulling nog: en dat doen we samen!!

DOOR FLORIS VAN DER ZEE Op donderdag 15 september opende minister Piet Hein Donner in Den Haag het vernieuwde Huis voor Democratie en Rechtsstaat dat vanaf nu de naam ProDemos draagt. Met deze feestelijke opening werd ook het officiële startsein gegeven voor de tentoonstelling met het werk van drie ontwerpstudio’s van de Faculteit Bouwkunde TU Delft.

Alle drie onderzochten zij op een andere manier de relatie tussen architectuur en democratie.

Professor Dick van Gameren, hoofd van de afdeling Architectuur, kwam rechtstreeks vanuit de collegezaal in Delft naar Den Haag om bij de opening van de tentoonstelling ‘Ruimte voor Democratie’ aanwezig te zijn. Hij had de eer het eerste exemplaar van de gelijknamige publicatie bij de tentoonstelling te overhandigen aan Kars Veling, de directeur van ProDemos. Veling was op zijn beurt zo vereerd dat oud-minister en voormalig burgemeester van Den Haag Wim Deetman ook bij de plechtigheid aanwezig kon zijn, dat hij besloot het eerste exemplaar direct door te geven aan Deetman.

De expositie toont op een overzichtelijke manier een analyse van de ontwikkeling van het Binnenhof en het werk van de studenten. Ontwerpdocent Marc Koehler laat weten blij te zijn dat het zover is gekomen. “Ik nam anderhalf jaar geleden het initiatief om in samenwerking met ProDemos de ontwerpstudio ‘Huis voor Democratie’ te starten”, vertelt Koehler. En dit voorjaar vroeg hij de docenten

van twee andere ontwerpstudio’s, die zich ook bezig hadden gehouden met de relatie tussen democratie en architectuur, om samen deze tentoonstelling te organiseren.

Studenten van BSc-6 studio ‘Public Building’ onderzochten in 2010/2011 onder leiding van Koehler hoe je democratie kunt verbeelden en welke architectonische middelen je hiervoor kunt inzetten. Het ontwerp voor een Huis voor democratie en rechtsstaat zou kunnen dienen als mogelijk neutraal terrein en maatschappelijk kruispunt waar de waarden van democratie overgedragen worden. Een van de studenten verbeeldde de democratische netwerksamenleving bijvoorbeeld door de ruimtelijke opzet van een honingraatstructuur als uitgangspunt te nemen voor het ontwerp. Het programma voor het ontwerp bestond in feite uit de ruimte waarin de maquettes nu tentoongesteld, zijn. In diezelfde ruimte zijn ook de modellen van MSc2 studenten ‘Interiors’ naast elkaar opgesteld die eerder dit jaar te zien waren in de tentoonstelling ‘Theaters van democratie’ in het Tweede Kamergebouw. Deze modellen zijn tot stand gekomen op basis van onderzoek naar de plenaire zaal van verschillende parlementen. De studio werd georganiseerd door Cohen de Lara en Mulder van architecten-

bureau XML. “Wij denken dat de studenten met deze ontwerpen goed laten zien dat de vormgeving en inrichting van de Tweede Kamer daadwerkelijk van invloed kan zijn op het debat. Waar staan bijvoorbeeld de interruptie microfoons, hoe zit het kabinet ten opzichte van de Kamerleden en waar is de publieke tribune in de zaal. Daarin speelt de architectuur natuurlijk een belangrijke rol”, aldus Cohen de Lara. Ten slotte is speciaal voor deze tentoonstelling het resultaat van een onderzoek naar de historische ontwikkeling van het Binnenhof als stedelijke ruimte voor democratie helder in kaart gebracht onder leiding van Willemijn Wilms Floet. Een groep MSc-3 studenten ‘Hybrid Buildings’ deed dit onderzoek al in 2005, als verkennend onderzoek voor hun afstudeerproject om het Binnenhof uit te breiden. Helaas is door het afbranden van het voormalig faculteitsgebouw het originele werk verloren gegaan. “Dit was een goede gelegenheid om de uitkomsten van dat onderzoek weer onder de aandacht te brengen”, vertelt Wilms Floet. “De analyse toont dat dit complex door de eeuwen heen enorme transformaties heeft doorgemaakt. En daarom zouden we niet huiverig moeten zijn om ook in de toekomst radicale aanpassingen te maken.”

De publicatie, waarin alle ontwerpen en de analyse van de

ontwikkeling van het Binnenhof zijn gebundeld, toont net als de tentoonstelling een grote verscheidenheid aan ruimtelijke ideeën voor de vertaling van het democratisch model naar een materiële uitvoering. Terwijl de tentoonstelling de maquettes toont, bevat de publicatie juist de tekeningen en toelichtingen, waardoor het niet alleen een nuttige aanvulling is, maar ook los van de tentoonstelling een interessant document is. Dat wordt nog eens versterkt door het inleidende essay over openbaarheid dat Hans Teerds speciaal voor deze publicatie schreef. Hij maakt in dit essay ‘Tussen wasserette en parlement’ gebruik van zowel het werk van de filosofen Hannah Arendt en Jürgen Habermas, als van de sociologen Maarten Hajer en Arnold Reijndorp. Maar hij schuwt niet om uit zijn eigen ervaringen te putten of hedendaagse fenomenen als internetfora en nieuwe (sociale) media mee te nemen. Dit levert een prikkelende conclusie op, zeker voor een architect. Hij beweert dat om te kunnen spreken van een openbare ruimte de vorm van een ruimte er niet zoveel toe doet. De essentie is dat er een ruimte moet zijn die door mensen gedeeld kan worden, en waarin ze fysiek samen participeren. En dat biedt hoop, ook voor de toekomstige architecten, waarvan het werk nu al in Den Haag te bewonderen is!

BY NOW EVERYONE WHO HAS PASSED THROUGH THE OOST SERRE, HAS MARVELED AT THE PRISTINE TOWERS, MADE FROM WHITE LEGO BRICKS, THAT HAVE BEEN MULTIPLYING OVER THE PAST MONTH. IN NOVEMBER, THESE MODELS WILL HAVE MUSHROOMED INTO A CITYSCAPE, ON A SCALE OF 1:1000, CONSISTING OF 625 SKYSCRAPERS. FINALLY, FROM THESE MODELS, EIGHT GIGANTIC ONES WILL RISE, MEASURING UP TO 6 M IN HEIGHT, AND THEY WILL BE THE FINAL PRODUCTS OF THE EURO HIGH STUDIO FROM THE WHY FACTORY. THESE TOWERS WILL REPRESENT ITS INVESTIGATION INTO THE VARIOUS POSSIBILITIES OF WHAT A EUROPEAN SKYSCRAPER COULD BE. The skyscraper as a type has come under fire in recent years. While in the past it had a promise of being a monument to progress, innovation and freedom, today, many of the critics say, it has become the ultimate symbol of the market economy.

Therefore, the premise of the studio is to reinvigorate the highrise and expose its inherent promise. “We will research if there are new possibilities for a skyscraper to become a public structure in the city.” says Alexander Sverdlov, researcher at The Why Factory.

EuroHigh as a theme was set up in order to bring forward the differences between different cultures of the high-rise. Could we claim that in times of global economy, one could distinguish Asian, American or European skyscraper? Could we say, that the European high-rise is the one that has more public elements embedded in it, as opposed to the American one?

One million LEGO bricks will be used during the studio's research

Aided by the expertise of KRADS, a young architects firm based in Denmark and Iceland, who have set up various workshops based on exploring fundamental, architectural principles through LEGO bricks, the students will develop 8 prototypical European skyscrapers. First, they will attempt to transform a traditional skyscraper into a new type of skyscraper in 25 steps. The students will work within such frames as Porosity, Non-repetitiveness and Pixelation, while also adapting their approach. Some will envision the skyscrapers as a sequence of landscapes and canyons, while others might explore the possibilities of growing. This will result in the previously stated 625 models. Then further research will narrow in on the final eight prototypes.

The LEGO brick as basis for this exercise has its advantages. It reduces the architectural problem, making it easier for the students to focus on the relationship between mass, as the generic program, and void, as the representation of public space within the building.

Also, the pixelated nature of LEGO immediately imposes the importance of the small grain within a large structure. According to Sverdlov “The image of the society one might have today, is the one of the cloud of disconnected individuals, which is largely shapeless but sometimes extremely powerful. This LEGO exercise will explore how much power the individual pixel might have in configuring a collective whole”.

During the semester students will present their work as two exhibitions: 625 tower grid in scale 1:1000 (starting with the midterm presentation on Oct 25) and the final 8 European skyscrapers in scale 1:100 (together with the final presentation around the end of January).

Kees van Weeren

Kees van Weeren (1946) was vanaf 1996 hoogleraar Draagconstructies aan de faculteit. Met zijn leerstoel onderzocht hij het gebruik van nieuwe materialen en fabricagemethoden voor draagconstructies.

Van Weeren heeft een eigen adviespraktijk, Kunst, Advies en Techiek (K.A.T), dat is toegespitst op restauratieaanpak van gebouwen met schade door funderingsproblemen en het omgaan met bouwschade aan draagconstructies. Tot halverwege 2006 was hij ook opleidingsdirecteur van de faculteit.

Verder treedt hij op als arbiter tussen opdrachtgevers en raadgevend ingenieurs. Eerder werkte hij ruim vijfentwintig jaar bij de Rijksgebouwendienst, onder meer als hoofd constructie van het architecten/ ingenieursburea.

Is het wennen om thuis te zijn?

Ik denk dat het bijzondere gevoel pas over een tijdje komt. Op dit moment ben ik nog zo druk met allemaal andere dingen, zowel in het vak als daarbuiten. Ik heb bijvoorbeeld nog mijn eigen adviesbureau, en bij de brandweeracademie ben ik betrokken bij de denktank instortingen. Het is nog geen zwart gat, maar misschien komt er wel een gaatje zo aan het eind van het jaar, dat ik erbij stilsta en denk: dat is toch wel heel anders.

U heeft geen bouwkunde gestudeerd, maar civiele techniek. Voelde u zich als civiel ingenieur geen buitenbeentje bij Bouwkunde?

Absoluut niet. Carel Weeber, illustere architect en ook een voorganger van mij als opleidingsdirecteur op Bouwkunde, zei eens tegen mij: ‘Die civielen die op bouwkunde komen werken, dat zijn nog ergere bouwko’s dan de bouwko’s zelf.’ Ze zijn misschien nog trotser op de bijzondere plek die de faculteit is, en ze zijn er misschien nog meer mee bezig om nog extra te stimuleren dat die plek zo bijzonder blijft, dan iemand die al aan dezelfde faculteit heeft gestudeerd.

Wat vindt u zo bijzonder aan de faculteit Bouwkunde?

Een van de dingen die me van het eerste ogenblik op bouwkunde heeft aangesproken is de enorme betrokkenheid van de mensen.

Dat is een belangrijk kapitaal van de faculteit; die betrokkenheid is volgens mij op Bouwkunde nog

veel groter dan op andere faculteiten. Er wordt van alles georganiseerd en er zijn mensen die zorgen dat het onderwijs altijd goed, wat er ook gebeurt.

Waarom bent u zo geïnteresseerd in bouwconstructies?

Dat begint als kleine jongen, toen ik al met blokken speelde. Maar wat mij binnen het vak altijd heeft aangetrokken, is het in een team meespelen. Daarom ben ik ook bewust de richting van gebouwen opgegaan: het als solitair constructeur ontwerpen van een brug spreekt mij veel minder aan. Ik heb het altijd ontzettend leuk gevonden om in een team, met ieders inbreng, te komen tot een mooi ontwerp.

Geeft een samenwerking meerwaarde aan het ontwerp?

Als zo’n samenwerking goed gaat, dan moet dat meerwaarde hebben. Maar de laatste jaren gaan daar een paar dingen verkeerd. Er wordt bijvoorbeeld vaak op papier wel samengewerkt, maar er zijn zoveel aspecten en zoveel betrokkenen met ieder hun eigen verantwoordelijkheden dat er een soort versplintering van aandacht plaatsvindt en er niet goed samengewerkt kan worden.

Daardoor worden er fouten gemaakt en vinden er instortingen plaats, want dat heeft ook zeker daarmee te maken. Ook op het gebied van duurzaamheid, waar we op Bouwkunde nu veel mee bezig zijn, krijg je door gebrekkige samenwerking suboptimale oplossingen. Een paar aspecten zijn dan goed ontwikkeld, maar het wordt niet geïntegreerd in het totale

ontwerp. Ik denk dat het ook voor de afgestudeerden van Bouwkunde heel belangrijk is dat ze zich oefenen in het samenwerken met een groep, wat iets anders is dan twintig specialisten raadplegen.

U werkte lange tijd in het oude gebouw en was ook nauw betrokken bij het onderzoek naar de draagconstructie van het gebouw na de brand. Mist u het oude gebouw?

Absoluut niet. Je praat wel eens met mensen over je werk, en wat voor sfeer er dan is. Toen ik nog in het oude gebouw werkte, had ik het er dan over dat het zo’n fantastisch gebouw was, dat het bruiste en dat er zoveel dingen gebeurden. Maar nu, met het gebouw aan de Julianalaan, maar eigenlijk ook al in de tussentijd met het tentenkamp, is die sfeer eigenlijk ook zo goed. Dan merk je dat het niet om het gebouw gaat, maar om de mensen in het gebouw en over alles wat die mensen daar doen. Dat is niet afhankelijk van een gebouw.

Is de sfeer die er heerst dan compleet onafhankelijk van het gebouw?

Ik denk dat in bijna ieder gebouw die sfeer hetzelfde zou kunnen zijn, omdat het gewoon des Bouwkunde is om zo’n gebouw zo aan te passen dat het bij elkaar past. Het is niet zo dat je kunt zeggen: Neem een willekeurig kaal gebouw en stop die handel er maar in en dan is die sfeer er.

Nee, breng het gebouw en de mensen bij elkaar en er wordt gezorgd dat het bij elkaar past.

Want er is natuurlijk ontzettend veel met dat gebouw, met BK city,

7 ontwikkelen en hoe je die waarde kunt uitbuiten.

U was ook lid van de commissie bindend studieadvies. Wat vindt u eigenlijk van de introductie van het bindend studieadvies?

Als commissielid bindend studieadvies werd mijn mening daarover niet gevraagd, maar ik heb natuurlijk wel ideeën over dat soort zaken. Als je het bestaande bindend studieadvies vergelijkt met de eisen die overal om ons heen, ook internationaal, worden gesteld aan studenten, zijn onze eisen voor het bindend studieadvies eigenlijk peanuts. Maar ik denk dat het heel goed is voor de faculteit en voor de betrokken studenten dat de studenten die niet aan de eisen voldoen, afvallen.

CAREL WEEBER ZEI EENS TEGEN MIJ: “DIE CIVIELEN DIE OP BOUWKUNDE KOMEN WERKEN, DAT ZIJN NOG ERGERE BOUWKO’S DAN DE BOUWKO’S ZELF.” gebeurd, dat was een afgrijselijk gebouw. De mensen die daar vroeger in werkten hadden het altijd over die grauwe kolos.

Maar het is des bouwkunde om daaraan te verbouwen en het zo in te richten dat het gewoon weer goed bij elkaar past.

U bent veel bij het onderwijs betrokken geweest, u was onder andere opleidingsdirecteur en voorzitter van de examencommissie. Wat vindt u van het onderwijs aan de faculteit Bouwkunde?

In de afgelopen vijftien jaar zijn

er veel dingen veranderd in het onderwijs. Daarbij zijn er echte verbeterslagen gemaakt, zoals de digitalisering in het onderwijs, het onderscheid tussen kenniskwartalen en ontwerpkwartalen en het groepsgewijs werken aan een afstudeerproject. Maar we zijn ook altijd heel goed geweest in het veranderen van onderwijs.

Het probleem is dat wanneer er een aanleiding of verplichting was om iets te doen met het curriculum, dat werd aangegrepen om een compleet nieuw curriculum op te zetten, en het curriculum te behandelen als een

tabula rasa. Op zich is het heel normaal dat je elk jaar je curriculum vaststelt, en het is goed als je binnen een vak wijzigingen aanbrengt in een curriculum dat min of meer een permanent geheel vormt. Maar wanneer je die curricula iedere paar jaar heel ingrijpend wijzigt, dan kun je nog niet eens fatsoenlijk evalueren wat er nu precies van waarde is in het bestaande curriculum. Als je het goed doet, is het zoals bij een ontwerpproject. Je kijkt naar de gegeven situatie, die een bepaalde waarde heeft, en je gaat dan kijken hoe je dat verder kunt

Heeft u zelf veel activiteiten gehad naast uw studie?

Jazeker. Ik ben zelf een echte langstudeerder geweest. Ik heb acht jaar over mijn studie gedaan en ik heb daar toen heel veel naast gedaan. De langstudeerboete die staatssecretaris Zijlstra in de planning heeft staan, vind ik dan ook complete nonsense. Ik heb wel de eerste twee jaar van mijn studie nominaal gestudeerd.

Ik denk dat het heel goed is om in het begin goed door te studeren en daarna de tijd te nemen voor allerlei bijzondere zaken. Er zijn ontzettend veel dingen die bijdragen aan je persoonlijke ontwikkeling en waarvan het goed is dat ze gebeuren. Jezelf ontwikkelen is overigens iets anders dan twee jaar over een afstudeerproject doen, je moet zorgen dat je dat binnen een jaar af hebt. Maar waar je wel veel aan hebt is om naast je studie bijvoorbeeld een stage te doen bij een architectenbureau of een stedenbouwkundig bureau.

Wat zou u de faculteit nog willen meegeven?

Wees zuinig op het kapitaal dat je hebt; die enorme groep van betrokken mensen die er op de faculteit rondloopt. Probeer deze mensen vooral de dingen te laten doen die echt nodig zijn voor het onderzoek en onderwijs. Laat ze zo min mogelijk dingen doen die niet écht nodig zijn. Dat wens ik de faculteit toe, want het is een fantastische gemeenschap.

HAARLEM CANAL PAVILION ARCHITECTURAL ENGINEERING STUDENT XING WANG GRADUATED WITH A 10 AND HE RECEIVED AN HONORABLE MENTION FOR HIS FINAL PROJECT. REASON ENOUGH FOR B NIEUWS TO USE THESE PAGES TO PRESENT THIS REMARKABLE DESIGN.

BY XING WANG The design proposes a multi-functional pavilion situated at the Nieuwe Gracht in Haarlem, which is approximately 30 meters wide and right in between the city’s train station and the city center. The project aims at changing the typical experience of a Dutch canal and proposes a landscape architectural project above the canalwater. Furthermore it generates a large and adjustable interior space for cultural and commercial functions for the neighborhood.

Besides the design for the landscape and its function, the main objective of the project was to explore a solution for a customized parametric building system and to create a non-standard prefabricated structure.

The building could be completely fabricated by Computer Numerical Control (CNC) and easily assembled on the site.

The design process could be explained in three parts:

1. Customized form finding The concept of this project is to change the straight and flat surroundings of the typical Dutch canal scenery to a more dynamic landscape.

The building is a multi-shell geometry which can provide big and continual interior spaces used for shops, conferences and cultural functions. The form finding process of this complex geometry was parametric and customized, which allows both users and owners of a

building to join the design process and adjust the geometry with some simple methods and limited variables. The final geometry was selected from the multiple results of this process, according to the functional and structural input.

2. Parametric generation of the structure After the general form finding process, the design needed some further structural and functional development. The roof structure composed by triangular wooden cells. It consits of two layers: a wooden structure on the outside and on the inside a triangular glass mesh dragged by the steel elements, which are attached to the wooden cells. The production of the wooden shell structure became essential. First, the triangular pattern was applied to the surface and manipulated according to the structure optimization process. Afterwards, the polylines of the triangular pattern were transferred to the 3d triangular wooden cells, which could be manufactured by a CNC machine. The wooden cells can be detailed completely by computer generation, since all construction data was generated by computer. The whole design is adjustable as well since a BIM system could be used. This allows both the designer as the commissioner to take control over the budget.

3. Fabrication and construction The next step was to develop a direct connection from a 3d digital file to a fabrication and construction file. Parametric software helped to automatically transfer the geometrical data to Rhino CAM. By selecting a group of the wooden cells in the digital model, the computer could directly translate this into milling data needed for a 5 axis milling machine. A CNC machine could cut and mill all the wooden panels with all details. These completely detailed panels could then be assembled fast and precisely in a factory. Small pieces of the shell structure can be pre-assembled before assembling the complete shell structure at the site. Such a construction process could keep building sites as clean as possible. This is particular beneficial to difficult construction circumstances on site, such as the limited working space along Dutch canals.

Conclusion I believe that, in this century, architectural design and construction realization processes should be treated in closely related systems.

Furthermore, structure generation should be considered more in terms of customization, BIM and CNC solutions. Then the building could emerge more by itself instead of being drawn.

Xing Wang graduated within the Architectural Engineering studio on an innovative pavilion in the middle of the Nieuwe Gracht in Haarlem. During his studies, and especially his graduation project Wang has showed an excellent level, not solely in his own work, but also in its connection with development of new useful design tools and in its embedding within applied research and especially architectural design. In doing so, apart from an excellent historical analysis of Haarlem and its waterways with all its interdependencies, he designed a remarkable pavilion. One might even say to a certain extent provocative. But at the same time the building conforms itself to the surroundings in a very natural way, forming a new inner-city landscape. Main background is the parametric approach Wang used for the translation of site, (micro-)climate and future use towards the shape of the building and its infills. The latter made that Wang received an honorable mentioning. For his excellent elaboration to improve connection of almost infinite free-form shaping possibilities to form control.

With his approach to parametric design attached to the parameters sustainability and especially industrial engineering (CNC), product development and detailing, he addresses to the (potential) problems with regard to building industry and free form design in particular as for avoiding potential construction failures and related necessary excessive budget reservations. By doing so he makes both complex building forms and free form design better controllable and the development and free form designed buildings better within reach.

Wang has shown to be very ambitious while delivering high quality work. Meanwhile he was sensitive while staying decisive, and last but not least we enjoyed working with Wang, for his personality and humor.

Wang shows that, if elaborated well, parametric design can mean a paradigm shift for the reciprocity between architectural design and engineering.

Urban Investigations IN AN ATTEMPT TO UNRAVEL THE COMPLEXITY OF URBAN LIFE, TWO PHD CANDITATES OF THE DEPARTMENT OF URBANISM DEVELOPED NEW APPROACHES TO TACKLE THIS PROBLEM. A COMMON FACTOR IN THESE STUDIES IS THAT THEY ARE NOT EXPRESSLY PROBLEM-DRIVEN, BUT SEEM TO EMERGE OUT OF A GENERAL CURIOSITY. BECAUSE VALORISATION OF RESEARCH IS SUCH A HOT TOPIC, IT IS QUITE ADVENTUROUS TO INITIATE A RESEARCH THAT DOES NOT IMMEDIATELY SHOW ITS PRACTICAL SIDE. IN OTHER WORDS: THIS MIGHT BE ARCHITECTURE’S EQUIVALENT TO FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH.

BY IVAN THUNG For his research Gerhardes Bruyns mapped networks of roads heading to commercial units. He tried to find a relation between roads that operate as infrastructure for a certain scale, for example the ‘neighbourhood’ and commercial units that serve the same scale. By doing this he hoped to find some kind of index between that can correlate the one with the other, meanwhile elucidating the still vague relations between network and function.

Urban form and structure Bruyns explains: “The primary objective was the study of urban morphology, the study of urban form and structure. What is being done in Delft is zooming in on specific sections of these spatial configurations, and looking at all these ‘pockets’. It is about relations, about how can we read a centre and how we can read a periphery.” Historically the subject matter of this research was the architectural type, now the focus is more on the fabric as an autonomous thing.

But with a precaution: “We shouldn’t look at the urban fabric just as patterned grains, but to how physical networks move in the landscape. I just looked at roads, that all it is.“

showed the map to someone who is in real estate. For them it is interesting because there is a whole new visualisation of where the prime Real Estate should be. Intersections of networks of global and metropolitan configurations, in for example Amsterdam, should correlate to the highest Real Estate values, and somehow it does.” If you want a commercial centre to have local conditions, you need a local network. A metropolitan network would shift the place to a completely different scale and corresponding features. From this perspective, the map can point out places where to invest. Although this is already interesting, Bruyns is even more curious what would happen if we would apply the same principle to scale levels of cities like Hong Kong.

But it can also works the other way around, which can be interesting for municipalities interested in investing in infrastructure. “By changing the network and the way the network relates to a place, it can really change a place.”

Does this open the possibility to intervene solely based on this map? “I believe that it is never possible to intervene solely on a map. I come from South Africa and have learned that a map is always very personal, in the sense that it just shows one kind of perspective. There are always extra factors involved that are not included in the abstraction of a map.”

Quest to better understanding On the question if this research will not be drowned out by all the other research on urban form and structure Bruyns responds: “Comparing all these different morphological studies is like comparing different cake recipes, not one is best, and there are just different ways of seeing it each of it showing different possibilities. As a PHD student you learn that your contribution to the debate is like adding a stone in a wall. It is a small contribution, but it adds to the debate. It is not about ego, it is a small contribution to a quest to better understanding.”

To start with, he took a territory, and mapped the territory just from the roads.

Within these roads he distinguished a hierarchy that operates at three different scales: the neighbourhood, the city, and metropolitan (between cities). By colouring roads that operate at the same scale, he was able to create three maps.

Thereupon he looked how commercial functions relate to these networks. “It took me a year only for the initial stage, going around on a bike asking people; where do your clients come from? In the neighbourhood, other areas in the city, or other cities?”.

Maps based on these hierarchical subdivisions can give a whole new view on spatial configurations. “What is the relation of the unit with the network? When we find a correlation between the units and the map, we can build co-indexical values. With that we can say something about one element, just by looking at the other.”

Bruyns found that networks become mechanistic in the sense that they provide access to certain environments. They can change the way of which an entire unit operates. A place that is coerced by infrastructure of a local scale can change greatly when roads of the network of a city scale are introduced.

11 LAST MONTH SAW THE CONFERRAL OF PHD STUDENT KRABBENDAM. FOR HIS THESIS, KRABBENDAM REFRAMED THE THINKING ABOUT URBAN PROBLEMS USING A PHILOSOPHICAL ‘FAIT PRIMITIF’. DUE TO AN EVER-GROWING DISCOMFORT WITH THE REIGNING DISCOURSE ON URBAN PROBLEMS AND ARCHITECTURE, HE IDENTIFIED AN INSTRUMENTAL AND A SITUATIONAL ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE URBAN. Educated in the 70s, Krabbendam himself was educated with the idea that city dwellers should be involved in decision making. Looking back now, he sees little of these ideals actually being realized. “I’m truly worried about the involvement of citizens in the built environment,” says Krabbendam. Being interested in philosophy and particularly existentialism, Krabbendam tried to examine this problem in urban planning in a philosophical framework. It has lead him to his ‘fait primitif’, an intuition that there are two possible attitudes namely the instrumental, and the situational.

In the now popular Postmodernistic point of view, Krabbendam argues, the world is perceived as not much more then a collage of images. But to just live with images is to live in a world without real values. In the end, it will leave us with a feeling of emptiness. On the opposite, we find a discourse that frames man as a little part of a machine. In this modern point of view man is defined in such functionalistic terms that it becomes a depersonalized creature.

Bridge to philosophy Therefore Krabbendam has introduced two basic attitudes, in which we can relate to the world surrounding us again. These attitudes are related to the existentialist philosophies of Sartre and Heidegger. According to Sartre you don’t coincide with world, in other words, you are that what the world is not, which gives you the distance to act upon it. Krabbendam identifies this possibility for an active stance towards the world with the instrumental attitude.

Heidegger, on the other hand, perceives the human existence as a specific way of being-in-the-world (Dasein). Krabbendamn links this with the situational attitude.

In daily life you constantly switch from the one attitude to the other. When you act upon the world (instrumental attitude), what counts is means-end rationality, cause and effect. When you let the world act upon you (situational attitude) what counts is taste and association.

modern living block with this instrument, we can see there is a gap in the sequence. First there is the bedroom, then the living room, then, nothing, which is the elevator ride and subsequently, neighbourhood level. This gap is the result of the purely instrumental approach of the building. This type of analysis exposes the absence of these much-needed in-betweenlevels because they provide useful points where people can connect. An example of a space with an instrumental gap is are 'vinexwijken' that are designed in a playful way. Here there should be a network of infrastructure that connects the home to the city. But the infrastructure in the neigbourhood is like a maze, which creates a gap in the sequence. As a result, the neigbourhood will lose connection to the city and be confined to itself.

“THAT'S LIKE LIVING ON AN ASSEMBLY LINE”

Conveyer belt What has this to do with architecture and urbanism? Krabbendam: ‘The problem with contemporary building is that in most of the times, one of the two attitudes prevails. The Russian constructivists Barsc and Vladimirov designed in 1929 a commune for 1600 people. The concept of this design was the conveyor belt. You start as a youngster in the building, and with ageing, you’d move throughout the building to different rooms. That’s bizarre, like living on an assembly line where operations are done on you. This concept is purely instrumental; it is about the operation, not about who this actor that operates actually is. According to this concept, you function in a building, instead of to the building functioning in your hands! This is a perfect example of modernistic depersonalization.”

Philosophy into practice Now we have defined the instrumental and situational approach as new ways of thinking about the built environment, how can we use it in practice?

Krabbendam: “We could give each attitude its own domain of the built environment or let’s say a building. For example, the living room is for situational, the bathroom can be for both and the kitchen is instrumental.

From these basic attitudes as starting point, spaces can be developed.

But there is a meta-level. Once we’ve assigned the attitudes to the environments we can arrange them into sequences. A situational sequence connects different situational spheres that operate on different levels. For example, starting from the house you’ve got the bedroom-livingroom-frontporch-street-neighbourhood-city sequence. Such a sequence creates a continuous line that connects all these situational realms. If we analyse a

Future Although it is always hard to put new theoretical frameworks into practice, Krabbendam is optimistic. “What I would really like to do, is start a studio with some students and analyse what would happen if we would translate the quality demands that I have formulated to practice. Would you recognize the quality as a quality? What before was vague or seemed to be mere preference can now be recognized explicitly as a quality.”

Baffling terminology Urbanism and philosophy have a love relationship. Especially ideas of French post structuralist philosophers like Foucault, Deleuze, Baudrillard and Lefevbre have often been used as a base for urban theorizing.

Bruyns uses the term ‘dispositif’ which a concept borrowed from Foucault. Foucault describes it as a ‘thoroughly heterogeneous ensemble consisting of discourses, institutions, architectural forms, [..] in short, the said as much as the unsaid.’.

GRADUATE SCHOOL SINCE 1924 THERE HAVE BEEN MORE THAN 270 PHD RESEARCHERS AT THE FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE, WHO HAVE CONDUCTED THEIR RESEARCH IN MORE OR LESS SIMILAR WAYS. BUT FROM NOW ON, WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE AND THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT (A+BE), A NUMBER OF THINGS WILL CHANGE RADICALLY FOR NEW PHD STUDENTS. THE MOST VISIBLE CHANGES RELATED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL INVOLVE THE FACT THAT PHD STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE DOCTORAL EDUCATION AND THE AIM THAT THERE WILL BE A BETTER ARRANGEMENT REGARDING THE GUIDANCE BY PHD SUPERVISORS. ANOTHER RECENT CHANGE FOR NEW PHD STUDENTS, CONNECTED TO THE BUDGET CUTS AT THE FACULTY, INVOLVES THE FACT THAT OPTIONS FOR FUNDING THE PHD RESEARCH FOR DUTCH STUDENTS HAVE BECOME LIMITED.

BY MANON SCHOTMAN A major change for new PhD researchers in the graduate school is the fact that they receive doctoral education, as is already customary in the Anglo-Saxon academic world. In accordance with the Bologna protocol, this doctoral education will be the last phase of study, following the Bachelor and Master phase. The PhD student will have to complete a program of 45 credits (ECTS) of workload during the first three years of research.

A recent survey among PhD researchers in the whole TU Delft shows that most of the PhD researchers see their supervisor only once every three months, or less. One of the goals of the Graduate school is to increase this frequency, so that PhD students will see their supervisor

at least once every month. The PhD student will receive more guidance, and there will be fixed moments of review to monitor the progress of the research.

There are a few reasons why the Graduate school of Architecture and the Built Environment is introduced. One of the reasons is that at the moment there is a considerable majority of PhD researchers that do not finish their PhD in four years while about half of the PhD students that started between 2003 and 2007 have yet still not finished and possibly will never do. By following PhD students and the progress of their research more closely, the graduate school aims to attain better results in this respect.

More or less parallel to the implementation of the graduate

school, the context of PhD research at our faculty has changed. Since 2009 the faculty is no longer able to fund PhD researchers from its own resources, which means that funding for PhDs have either to be included in an externally funded research proposal, or PhDs will have to find their own research budget. This implies that most students will have to find a scholarship to finance their PhD research and the annual bench fee (5.000 euros) the faculty asks from the PhD student.

In many countries the respective governments supply students with PhD scholarships. The Dutch government, however, doesn’t supply any scholarships to students, which means that in the future it will be much harder for Dutch students to get financial means to pursue a PhD. Already a

very large part (close to 90%) of the incoming PhD researchers at this faculty is a foreigner, and there is a big chance that, as long as the government does not supply scholarships, the percentage of foreign PhD students over Dutch PhD students will continue to grow.

HERIJKING DOOR STUURGROEP HERIJKING Uitwerking van herijkingsmaatregelen In juli van dit jaar heeft het College van Bestuur (CvB) ingestemd in met de door de faculteit voorgestelde bezuinigingsmaatregelen. Voor de implementatie van deze maatregelen schrijft de faculteit verschillende deelplannen. In een aantal gevallen beschrijven de plannen opheffen, wijzigen of verplaatsen van functies en hebben de maatregelen direct gevolgen voor de aanstelling van medewerkers.

Alle medewerkers bij wie dit het geval zou kunnen zijn werden voor de zomer door hun leidinggevende geïnformeerd.

Voortgang reorganisatieplan Media Studies De faculteit heeft in de zomer de reorganisatie van Media Studies

beschreven en aan de TUD taskforce Herijking ter beoordeling voorgelegd. Tegelijkertijd is het plan vertrouwelijk aan de facultaire onderdeel commissie (OdC) ter inzage gegeven. TUD taskforce Herijking en OdC hebben vervolgens aan de faculteit gevraagd een aantal punten van het reorganisatieplan Media Studies verder uit te werken. Zodra deze punten zijn uitgewerkt, zal het definitieve reorganisatieplan in oktober naar het CvB worden gestuurd. Daarna volgt behandeling in de Ondernemingsraad (OR) en besluitvorming in het CvB. De faculteit wil voor de jaarwisseling beginnen met de uitvoering van dit eerste reorganisatieplan.

Nieuwe reorganisatieplannen In de maanden oktober en

november volgen nog twee grotere en acht kleinere reorganisatieplannen. Samen met het CvB schrijven de faculteit en het OTB bovendien een plan voor de komst van OTB als nieuwe afdeling van de faculteit Bouwkunde.

Zorgvuldigheid vraagt tijd Zodra een reorganisatieplan is vastgesteld door het College van Bestuur wordt door de faculteit een concept personeelsplan opgesteld. Dit concept personeelsplan wordt door de faculteitsecretaris voorgelegd en toegelicht aan de TUD plaatsing- en adviescommissie (PAC). Na het advies van de PAC besluit het College van Bestuur over het personeelsplan en krijgen alle betrokken medewerkers een brief over hun rechtspositie. Medewerkers krijgen tijd om op de brief te

reageren en bovendien de mogelijkheid om hun zaak te bepleiten bij de PAC. Het College van Bestuur neemt vervolgens een definitief besluit. De tijd van voorbereiding van reorganisatieplannen, ontwikkeling van personeelsplannen en individuele besluitvorming kan drie tot zes maanden in beslag nemen.

DELFT, LEIDEN, WUHAN DURING SUMMER BRECHTJE SPREEUWERS, MASTER STUDENT OF OUR FACULTY, WAS AWARDED THE PRESTIGIOUS GRANT OF THE MARC JACOBS FOUNDATION. THIS GRANT WILL ALLOW HER TO TAKE PART IN THE ISCOCORP CONGRESS, WHICH WILL BE HELD IN THE CITY OF WUHAN, PR CHINA, FROM 24-28 OCTOBER 2011. THE CONGRESS TOPIC WILL BE LIVEABLE CITIES: URBANISING WORLD. MEETING THE CHALLENGE.

BY DAPHNE BAKKER Brechtje Spreeuwers’ entry impressed the jury, partly due to her extensive knowledge of China. Not only is she currently finishing her Masters at our

faculty through The Explore Lab, she’s also obtaining a degree in Sinology at Leiden University. She was drawn to the latter because of her desire to write more and to participate in research, something not offered during the Bachelor’s phase of Architecture.

In the beginning it was difficult to strike a balance between the two studies -“One moment I was designing and the next I was learning about Confucius.”

Eventually she started to recognize the links between both professions and this has given her the ability to refine her research on the unique Chinese phenomena of Urban Villages. Her Architecture thesis will focus on the spatial and architectural

characteristics of Urban Villages, while also exploring its anthropological aspects for her Sinology degree.

The Chinese government considers the Urban Villages to be a problem because of their substandard living conditions.

However, their solution has resulted in new urban areas which lack identity and alienate it’s inhabitants due to their enormous scale. Brechtje’s research will try to showcase the benefits of the Urban Villages such as its social aspects - while looking for a way to improve them without resorting to the current drastic measures.

Marc Jacobs The sudden passing of Marc Jacobs in 2008, inspired his friends, family and colleagues, to set up a Foundation in his name as a way of honoring his commitment to his profession.

It seemed only fitting to set up a fund which for the next five years will reward a Master student with the opportunity of being part of the annual ISOCORP congress, in which Marc was actively involved.

Brechtje Spreeuwers is the second winner from TU Delft since the Foundation started rewarding the grant in 2010.

Why internationalize?

We often hear that the university is ‘internationalizing’. It seems to be a natural development in a globalized country like the Netherlands.

However, what does internationalization mean and why should the university internationalize?

First of all, I must acknowledge that I am biased. I am a product of internationalization myself. And I am also a great beneficiary of it. I first came to TU Delft on a partnership programme among several European and Latin American universities. The paths opened to me by this opportunity and changed my professional and personal perspectives forever.

In order to talk about internationalization, it is necessary to distinguish among its different faces in the academic world. The first aspect that comes to mind is the increasing amount of international students seeking Bouwkunde for an outstanding education. This is perhaps the most recognizable face of internationalization, but there is much more to it.

The internationalization of the university has to do with seeking partnerships abroad in order to expand our knowledge base and to make our own ideas known to the world. It has also to do with having an international staff able to research and teach in a variety of subjects to an international audience. Finally, it has to do with diversifying the subjects being taught and researched.

We could say that internationalization of the university is all about international students, staff, partners and subjects. By international subjects, I mean both an international research agenda and an international curriculum (one is perhaps the consequence of the other).

Those aspects are obviously closely intertwined. Having more partners abroad opens doors for internation-

these in turn bring with them new knowledge, but also new values and expectations.

Richard C. Levin is the president of Yale University (in the States, even universities have presidents). Levin has a very enlightened opinion about internationalization. For him, the ‘emerging global university’ entails ‘a curriculum permeated by awareness that political, economic, social, and cultural phenomena in any part of the world can no longer be fully understood in isolation’. This means that the ways we produce and disseminate knowledge have changed dramatically.

Knowledge is never fully realized unless it is effectively communicated, processed and compared.

This entails the understanding that knowledge exists in permanent flows of exchange, constituting what we may call networks of knowledge.

Just like nations or people, knowledge does not exist in isolation. Those networks of knowledge must be necessarily open, permeable and non-hierarchical (no one is at the top of the pyramid: all must participate and exchange, and gain from the experience). The difference now is that those networks of knowledge are much more extended. They go much beyond what we used to call the nation state or even linguistic areas. We are also moving away from a Eurocentric view of the world, towards a more systemic understanding of common challenges that must be faced by all, albeit in different capacities.

The university is perhaps the most important articulating node in those networks of knowledge. But in order to remain competitive and to produce knowledge that is relevant, we need to be able to produce and impart knowledge in a much larger arena. The world is our field of action.

To support this vision, Levin has a compelling argument: “Increased interdependence requires that the leaders and citizens of tomorrow have cross-cultural awareness (…).

In both their private and public lives, the students of today will find that the outside world cannot be ignored. To an unprecedented extent, the careers of the next generation will be global in scope,

whether in business, law, health care, or education. Students need to be prepared for interaction around the globe, in the personal challenges they confront as well as the public challenges we face together”. I wonder if we could call this ‘globalisation’? In any case, the university is actually one of the places where this vague phenomenon called globalization materializes in a more tangible way.

TU Delft is internationalizing in all fronts. Currently, the faculty has a staff of 64 foreign academics (a bit less than 20% of the total). This excludes PhD candidates, who constitute a large international community.

In the last few years, the number of international students at BK has risen, from a mere 38 in 2003 to 185 in 2010. Currently, approximately 22% of all Masters students are internationals. These numbers do not include exchange students who come to BK through one of our several partnership programmes.

Agnes Wijers, director for International Affairs at TU Delft, ponders that 30% of international students would be the goal for the next few years. This does not seem difficult to attain, thanks to the recognition our faculty enjoys abroad and the fact that the Masters programme has been offered in English for a number of years.

Is TU Delft prepared for an increasing influx of internationals?

Yes, but it needs to get better, says Agnes. For her, some of the challenges include better English training for teachers and students and more housing for internationals. Both problems are being tackled. Steps have been taken to assess teachers’ English skills and to provide language courses for those in need.

The fees for international students will rise next year, and it is difficult to predict the impact this will have on the numbers. It must be said that TU Delft will remain competitive price-wise, especially in comparison with its British and American counterparts.

It is important to highlight the fact that an increasing number of Dutch students seek opportunities to study abroad and enrich their professional and personal experiences.

But as I pointed out, internationalization also means seeking strategic partnerships overseas. One can hardly conceive of any research

project funded by the European Union without several international partners. The EU puts a lot of emphasis on transnational comparisons, for obvious reasons. According to the university’s website, “within the large Sixth and Seventh Framework Programmes of the EU (FP6 & FP7), TU Delft takes part in more than 200 research projects with partners from all over the EU”.

A prestigious name means that practically anyone would like to be a partner of BK. With such an extended network, it is natural that the faculty starts to formulate strategies where some partnerships are emphasized and others discouraged or abandoned.

But having partnerships also means that Dutch researchers and teachers go abroad more and more to gain and impart knowledge.

And researchers and teachers from abroad are constantly circulating BK’s corridors. Some of those are bound to make lasting contributions to education and research.

What does that mean for education and research at BK? And indeed, what does that mean for the culture of the institution? Is local knowledge being overlooked? Several people seem to agree that specific knowledge (like the Dutch experiences in water management and social housing) is highly appreciated in an international arena. By being able to put local knowledge in an internationalised context, typically Dutch experiences are highlighted and even more valued.

Several international PhD candidates conduct comparisons between Dutch experiences and experiences in their own countries.

This seems a very effective way to disseminate Dutch knowledge.

It comes to mind that international careers seem to be the rule for American and British universities.

Those universities strive to attract top researchers, regardless of their nationality. This means that they are able to constantly incorporate new values and new knowledge, while preserving their core values untouched. This process is certainly not painless, but utterly rewarding.

Anyone who has enjoyed an international environment knows that the cross fertilization of ideas is much richer. And fun.

De organisatie zal in het algemeen moeilijk begrijpbaar worden, al helemaal voor eerstejaars. Maar voor vakken als alfa-gamma biedt het veel mogelijkheden.

Sanwei Yin, Public Realm MSc3 Personally I don’t think it is a good idea. The university shouldn’t be too big. Good universities like UCl and Sci-Ark are quite small. If the university is too big, the management will only care about the daily organisation. The attention will not be directed at the quality of teaching anymore.

Chung Gyeang Oh, Materialisation MSc3 The Delft University is only focused on technology. When you look at other universities in Asia, most universities have faculties from every subject. In that way the universities can communicate with each other and can share their ideas.

Aangezien ik nu hier drie jaar studeer, het heel erg naar mijn zin heb en het niveau van onderwijs hoog is, denk ik dat het alleen maar slechter kan worden.
