Architecture Education Conference On Wednesday 15 December, the faculty will be organizing an education conference as part of the redefinition and review agenda. The faculty is working on simplifying and improving its education. It is hoped that this can be achieved by implementing a number of major educational changes. These changes will be discussed and laid down during the education conference. On the homepage of the Architecture website you can read more on the specific topics of the conference.

a different point of view
Amidst the middle of everyday life, architectural debate is often forgotten. Or at least that is the opinion of the Stylos Masterclass Committee, which organized a symposium and a masterclass with Rob Krier and Sjoerd Soeters. At a faculty where reinventing the wheel is (more often than not) the norm, and innovation and invention is supposed to be our mantra, Rob Krier is probably the person who would feel the least comfortable here. Committed to an older, vernacular tradition, Rob Krier along with his younger brother Léon is one of the main proponents of New Urbanism, a movement started in the 1980s that strives to create urban spaces similar to the structure of the middle-sized medieval town. The two brothers’ writings inspired such projects as Poundbury in England, Seaside in Florida, and he himself planned De Resident in The Hague and Brandevoort in Helmond. The output of Krier’s firm has been helped not only by the public’s distaste for all things modernistic, but also the government’s decreasing involvement in the housing market, which meant that popular taste was given a free reign. Another architect who has been enjoying similar success and controversy is Sjoerd Soeters, who collaborated with Krier on several occasions, most notably in Haverleij in Den Bosch, in which Soeters designed a masterplan, consisting of five “castles” of which Krier designed one. Now, both of them will be given the space to present their ideas.
Masterclass Committee with the hope to bring architectural debate back to the faculty. “Rob Krier is an influential architect and urbanist, whose ideas and theory isn't debated or presented at the faculty. The names of Rob and Léon Krier aren't on the faculty's wall of fame at the library, even though he has realized many works in the Netherlands and abroad,” says Dominique Vermeulen, one of the members of the Committee. Thus, during one lecture this year, students will have the chance to acquaint themselves with something that they do not usually have access to. The symposium “Composing Urban space” will take place on 1 December, with a lecture by Krier and Soeters will be followed by a public debate moderated by Henco Bekkering, professor of Urban Design at our faculty. Rob Krier and Sjoerd Soeters will engage in the debate with panel members (Mieke Bosse, Eric Luiten, René van de Velden and Peter de Bois) and answer questions form students. These can be submitted to STYLOS via masterclass@stylos.nl or dropped off at the STYLOS Office on the Street of BK. The Masterclass, which takes place a day later, is already sold out. (PS)

Nieuws 3 Onderwijsconferentie: het bk-onderwijs verbeteren Op woensdag 15 december 2010 organiseert de faculteit Bouwkunde een onderwijsconferentie naar aanleiding van de bezuinigingen OP de faculteit. BK-CITY – De insteek is echter ambitieuzer. De faculteit grijpt deze kans aan om het onderwijs te vereenvoudigen maar ook te verbeteren. Tijdens de conferentie zullen vijf voorstellen worden behandeld. Ten eerste de vereenvoudiging van het bacheloronderwijs. Ten tweede de versterking van het onderwijs en –didactiek. Ten derde de harmonisatie van de onderwijsstructuur en gelijkschakeling van de mastertracks. Verder de verbetering van de efficiency en beoordelingssystematiek. En tenslotte met het oog op de Wet op de Architectentitel (WAT), het herformuleren van het profiel van de master track op
Bouwkunde. De conferentie is bedoeld voor een grote afvaardiging uit alle lagen van de faculteit. Zowel studentenvertegenwoordigers als stafleden worden per e-mail uitgenodigd. Uit de dag zullen concrete voorstellen komen die in het studiejaar 2011-2012 al worden geïmplementeerd. De conferentie borduurt voort op een aantal rondetafelgesprekken die de decaan in het voorjaar van 2009 over de toekomst van het bouwkundeonderwijs gevoerd heeft met diverse hoogleraren. Onder leiding van een denktank zijn inmiddels deze ideeën tot concrete onderwijsvernieuwingen
uitgewerkt. De voorstellen tot onderwijsvernieuwing zullen na de onderwijsconferentie worden aangevuld en aangescherpt met de input van de onderwijzende staf. Onderwijsdirecteur Krik van Ees: “Ik verwacht van de conferentie dat het ons een inhoudelijk kader zal verschaffen. Het komende curriculumbesluit op 1 febrauri zullen keuzes gemaakt moeten worden. Een inhoudelijk kader zal ons argumenten geven die bezuinigingsreden overstijgen. Daarnaast zal het voorstellen opleveren voor het stroomlijnen van de Bachelor.” (SS)
Jan molema bids bouwkunde farewell Jan molema is leaving bouwkunde after 4o years of faithful service... though he would prefer to go on: “i have A message for the new dean: you shouldn’t get rid of people who are important to the faculty just because they are over 65.” Delft - Budget cuts and reallocation of funds within RMIT, the department in which Molema operates, have meant the end of his research at the faculty. The indifferent attitude of the faculty towards his research subject, its own history, perplexes him. Molema, together with research partner Suzy Leemans, researched a group of Architecture students who started their studies more than 80 years ago in Delft: Jan Albarda and the Group of Delft. The work culminated in a book which was released earlier this year. It is a story about the fight for the right to break with the dogmatic traditionalismism championed by Granpré Molière, professor and guiding light at the faculty in the 1920’s and 30’s. The Group, as they called themselves, organized a symposium in 1930

and invited internationally reknowned architects to attend: heroes of modernism. This act of rebellion, as the symposium was officially boycotted by the faculty at the time, will be commemorated and reinterpreted in a symposium organized by Molema, exactly 80 years later on Dec. 1st, 2010 and will be held at Bacinol 2 on the Hooikade in Delft. The symposium, which is a farewell gift from the faculty, is entitled “Modernism is to blame for everything!”. Molema explains the title: “The way we phrased it is of course ridiculous and rather Wilders-esque. We wanted to be

provocative in order to start a debate. The underlying questions are: what is modernism? What does it mean? There are many different interpretations of modernism as an idea, from person to person and even from country to country. I would like the debate to lead to a clear statement concerning these matters.” The symposium caps off a year of events centered on the Group of Delft. Aside from the parallels with current events at the faculty, Molema also sees a more general relevance for students in the subject matter of the book and the symposium: “Studying architecture creates a basis that makes it possible to go in any number of directions. Jan Albarda was a good example of this.”(AG)

BK City SLIM Op 30 november gaan vier bureaus, architecten en duurzaamheidexperts, de strijd met elkaar aan door hun plannen voor BK City SLIM (de duurzaamheidopgave voor onze faculteit) te presenteren op de faculteit. Op 8 november j.l. gaven zij al een tussenpresentatie en vertelde ons vol enthousiasme over hun plannen en met wie zij graag samen willen werken. Het was heel erg inspirerend, er werden een heleboel verschillende ideeën gelanceerd om het gebouw duurzaam te maken en uit te breiden. Het grootste vraagstuk is natuurlijk onze energie huishouding. Alles is hier ongeïsoleerd. Op een infraroodfoto van de TU Delft zie je een grote rode vlek om ons gebouw staan. We zijn op jaarbasis €750.000 aan energielasten kwijt. Interessant om te zien is hoe je door nieuwe ruimtes te maken, zowel het ruimteprobleem als het energievraagstuk kunt oplossen. We kijken er vol spanning naar uit en kom vooral kijken op 30 november vanaf 14:00 uur in de Berlagezalen 1 en 2, maar meld je wel even aan door een mail te sturen naar het secretariaat van FMVG Secr-FMVG-BK@tudelft.nl

De lezingenjungle bij Bouwkunde Al jaren klaagt zowel student als medewerker steen en been over de chaos in het lezingenaanbod op de faculteit. Die staat volgens velen symbool voor het algemene gebrek aan samenhang tussen de leerstoelen. Hoe komt het dat het lezingenaanbod van de faculteit zo’n chaos is? Gaat het om profilering van de eigen afdeling? Is het onmacht? B Nieuws ging op onderzoek uit.
BK CITY – Het aanbod aan lezingen op de faculteit – zowel onderwijs- als onderzoeksgerelateerd – is enorm. Veel studenten en medewerkers ervaren dit als een chaos. Wanneer vindt nu wat plaats, waarom en waar? Er lijkt geen afstemming te zijn tussen de afdelingen, studio’s en leerstoelen. Er is geen regelmaat: lezingen worden niet op vaste momenten georganiseerd. Bovendien overlappen sommige lezingen thematisch. Het resultaat is een immens aanbod van kleine lezingen met lage opkomst. Tot slot laat ook de communicatie over locaties en tijden nog wel eens te wensen over.
externen. “Niet dat dit alles nu nog niet gebeurt, maar het zou nog veel meer moeten gebeuren.” Wijers verduidelijkt: “Belangrijk is dat de faculteit moet voorkomen dat zij in het aanbod met andere spelers zoals het NAi en ARCAM gaat concurreren. Dit betekent dat de faculteit zich moet concentreren op specifieke thema’s die aansluiten bij haar kernkwaliteiten. Wat is ons ‘unique selling point’, onze missie als faculteit, hoe willen we ons internationaal positioneren? Onze lezingen zullen bijvoorbeeld een veel betere aansluiting moeten vinden bij het onderzoek van de toekomst.”
Waar is de informatie nu te vinden? Op de agenda van de website van Bouwkunde bijvoorbeeld. (bk.tudelft.nl) Deze geeft echter een onvolledige indruk. Een willekeurig selectie van titels luidt: ‘How do you Landscape? Here & There’ (leerstoel Landschapsarchitectuur), ‘Technological Complexity: Society and Nature by Other Means’ (U-Lab), ‘Urban Planning: Next Top Models’ (U-Lab en het International New Town Institute) en ten slotte ‘Capita Selecta lezingenreeks 2010’ (afdeling Architectuur, in samenwerking met het Berlage Instituut Rotterdam). Dit is dan een overzichtelijke lijst, maar de lezingen die door middel van posters op de gangen van de faculteit worden aangekondigd en die binnen het onderwijscurriculum worden niet altijd genoemd.

Elke leerstoel, onderzoeksgroep, afstudeerstudio of afdeling lijkt zonder enige vorm van planning of samenwerking een lezing te kunnen organiseren op de faculteit. Een sterke regie op het lezingenprogramma lijkt hier dus een oplossing. Tom Avermaete is echter niet de enige voorstander van het ‘laissez-faire principe’ als het de organisatie van lezingen betreft. Maar de vraag blijft of de Faculteit Bouwkunde een organisatie is waar de introductie van een ‘sterke regie’ mogelijk is. Er heerst een bepaalde mate van zelfstandigheid bij de verschillende onderwijs- en onderzoekseenheden die de faculteit misschien wel niet moet willen opgeven. Een echte oplossing lijkt verder weg dan ooit. Wellicht dat de naderende bezuinigingen op pijnlijke wijze de wildgroei aan lezingen een halt toeroept en we eindelijk door de bomen het bos weer gaan zien. (SS)

Capita selecta: Other Moderns Capita selecta is back, this time under the direction of the chair of public building. The lecture series kicked off last week and features speakers from all over the world. B Nieuws Interviewed professor max risselada, professor of architecture, who co-organized the lectures. BY PETER SMISEK BK CITY – Every year, a different chair from the department of Architecture organizes a series of public lectures about a subject close to their heart. This year, the chair of Public Building collaborates with the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam to present “Twelve institutional and public buildings revisited, 1928-1968”. The lectures being held every Tuesday at the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam and Thursday at the faculty of Architecture in Delft. “The Berlage Institute essentially grew out of our faculty about 20 years ago”, says Max Risselada, which explains the collaborations between the two institutions over the years. His own research at that time and subsequent collaboration with the Berlage
Institute led him into an investigation of the other moderns together with Kenneth Frampton, a research which he then continued later in Delft with his students. “There is often this canonical notion of modern architecture, we are being taught about all the masters, while there are parallel developments all over the world that we knew very little about. Czechoslovakia, for example had a very vigorous architectural development between the two world wars, they really experimented a lot with modernism. However, 20 years ago, we knew very little about it. Aalto, for example, wasn’t in Giedeon’s ‘Time Space and Architecture’ (first published in 1941) until in fourth edition (1952), when suddenly, a whole chapter on him appeared”. His research into the theme of the
other moderns was eventually finished, but the planned publication never came. “When the opprtunity to organize a Capita Selecta came, I saw a chance to showcase this history, evaluate and stimulate further research into this topic. The twentieth anniversary of the Berlage Institute provided a good opportunity to come together and collaborate again” Indeed, the lecture series covers the more “obscure” works of modern architecture. From Hotel Juliš in Prague (1926-31), to Ford Foundation Building in New York (1965-68) and everything in between. The chosen buildings reveal a fascination with modern programmes and integration and interaction with public space. “The lectures are being given mostly by practicing architects
“We chose the period from 1928 until 1968 because it is when the first CIAM (Congrès internationaux d'architecture moderne) was held (1928) and at the end, in 1968 is the time when modernism was being questioned and its validity debated,” says Risselada. It focuses on times when the “debate about public space was more positive”and not on the contemporary developments. The students are more than welcome to see for themselves and compare it with what they know.

REPRESENTING A WIDE RANGE OF PROGRAMS, SITES AND THEMES, THE PROJECTS PROVOKE AND INSPIRE, INCITE AND CAJOLE. THE COMMON DENOMINATOR? ALL PROVIDE FUEL FOR THE ENGINE OF THE ONGOING ARCHITECTURAL DEBATE. B NIEUWS GOES ON A VIRTUAL JOURNEY VISITING THE NEWEST BATCH OF THE FACULTY’S TOP GRADUATION DESIGN PROJECTS.
BY ANNA GHIJS From practical to fantastical, poetic to pragmatic, the projects are as diverse as the faculty they spring from. Five of the design locations are close to home with projects in Amsterdam, Limburg and Rotterdam (three projects). International sites include Havana (two projects), Berlin and Bangkok. The graduates themselves similiarly represent an international cross-section of the faculty with nominees from both the Netherlands and abroad. The graduation studios represented in the projects are (in alphabetical order): Architectural Engineering (BT/A), Architecture and Dwelling (A), Border Conditions (A), Explore Lab, Interiors (A), Public Building (A) and Urban Climate (U) with Border Conditions and Explore Lab the conspicuous ‘winners’ with two nominated projects each. It’s time to proceed down the road to Archiprix… First stop on the tour is Mark Smyth’s project in Amsterdam De Brakke Grond. This proposal extends and reinterprets an existing cultural enclave through the careful insertion of new building volumes and program into a historical context. Smyth explores among other things the

multi-functional possibilities of spaces where it becomes possible for the boundaries to become blurred between audience and performer, a phenomenon he encountered in personal observations in similar cultural venues in the city. Additionally, attention was paid to "everyday spaces" and also interestingly to "inflexible spaces… that can accommodate varied use, forming a backdrop of permanence to a constantly shifting cultural programme." Interesting in the light of the excessive attention to flexible spaces present in many current design proposals. Moving south from Amsterdam to Rotterdam, the first project that comes into view is set in the historical downtown area. This project, entitled [DIS]CONTINUITY: interventions of historical Rotterdam by the design team comprised of Teera Dhanamun, Philip Mannaerts and Jue Qiu, focuses on a critical (re)view of the reconstruction in Rotterdam since the war. According to their project description: "An analysis of the morphological growth of the city centre, from the 17th century to 2010, was linked to the resulting spatial characteristics. For important zones in the perception of the city, we determined the specific intervention that defined its history of development. Our interference became a combination of emphasizing existing urban structures and restoring a former ambience into the current condition. The interventions have the lost history as a starting point, are adjusted to
today’s prospects and are attuned to the transformations of the future." A hotel, a popstage and a city office are the proposed addition to a historical backdrop of monumental buildings. The hybrid ensemble, likened to a rugby scrum, “connects the program to the public domain… and creates interesting interfaces and relationships.” Continuing on our journey, a short distance away is a project on the Coolsingel, by the design team comprised of Lilith van Assen, Lieke van Hooijdonk and Elsbeth Ronner, entitled The Metamorphosis of the Coolsingel, or the Beneficent Demolition of the City. In this fantastical project, a seemingly arbitrary, alienating metamorphosis takes place which fundamentally transforms the site. The Coolsingel becomes a runway and landing strip. The site and surroundings must fundamentally change to accommodate this new, alien function. These changes occur and become an intrinsic part of the site. The last step is the disappearance of the alienating element and the reinterpretation of the site based on the new parameters. The out-of-the-box thinking represented in this proposal, though quite extreme, can lead to new insights into possible design solutions not easily found when one is hampered by practical considerations. The designers found the the beauty of the space “in the paradox of the demolition of the street, the increased building density and the opening up of the
surrounding buildings.” Moving towards the southern part of Rotterdam, we arrive at a small village on the Maas, surrounded by industry: Heijplaat. This village was an experiment in the early part of the last century in an attempt to create new combined living and working areas in the city. Industry has now made way for educational instititions on the waterfront and an urban regeneration plan is in full swing. In this context, the next project can be found: Marko Koops’ Heijplaat Science Center. He describes it as “a compact, deep cubicle volume vs four elements”. The project seeks to, among other things, determine how “location specific factors can be used in and contribute to sustainable design.” The spaces in the building are defined by planes cutting the cube, horizontally and vertically. These planes are interpreted structurally as slabs which are “not just dead-weight, defining space, but act as living elements within a large metabolistic system.” Care has been taken to orient the spaces to the position of the sun, in keeping with the main theme. The design profits from this in two ways: by the manipulation of light in the interior spaces as well as the practical use of the solar radiation as it relates to the building’s energy needs. A couple of hours away, in the south of Holland located in the hills of Limburg, the next project can be found: the sublime light and the heterotopia by Robert

Urbanism department. MIM (Metropolitan Informal Mobility) by Roj Kanjanapanyakom proposes a way to get to grips with the growth of the city by unconventional means. The city was mapped based on motorcycle taxi routes and the resulting micronodes. A tool was then developed that can determine and define the parameters that inform urban planning and growth. This tool makes use of the contextspecific qualities of the urban condition in Bangkok instead of more generic urban design tools to govern growth. Kanjanapanyakom: “The proposals result in design schemes, which are flexible enough to respond to a market-orientated urban development character and the city’s urgencies.”

Traveling back halfway across the globe, we arrive at the last location: Havana, Cuba where two projects are located. Thomas Boerendonk’s PUBLIC VILLA, design of a boarding school in Havana is situated in a former stone quarry in Vedado. The communal character of spaces ‘in-between’ is examined and reinterpreted. Using different photographic techniques, the qualities of these spaces are explored and subsequently elaborated on in a series of drawings. Boerendonk: “The sequence of these particular spaces creates definition and separation, as well as continuity and connection. The application of this principal was the basis for the design of a boarding school and made it possible to add public value to private spaces without detriment of the private domain.”

Wierenga, a design for a modern-day cloister. Again, light plays an important role in this project, though here it used in a more introspective way to determine and define the experience of the inner spaces, reflecting the century-old cloister tradition. The building offers a sanctuary and according to Wieringa, “society is in need of such ‘other places’, as these places provide an unlimited space for the sublime within their borders.” In this heterotopia, designed for the Cistercian Order, “the spatial and ritual experience of sublime light and the threshold with the sur-
rounding landscape are at the heart of its fostopic character.” A lateral move to the East brings us to Berlin, Germany where the next project is located. Flexible Living in Tacheles by Douwe Kelderman and Yannis Tsoukalas is a proposal for a site in Berlin according to the designers, “that was bombed during the Second World War and is known worldwide for the artists and squatters who transformed one of the remaining buildings into an art center and night club after The Wall came down.” The left-over spaces in the complex were a starting point for the
design of dwellings that would strengthen and reflect this collective, flexible character. The design marks a departure from the typical Berlin urban block structure with the characteristic courtyards which surrounds the site. “The old and new together form a strong contrast which unites and reconnects Tacheles to the defragmented urban tissue of Berlin. Because the buildings are changeable in time, they are very sustainable.” Traveling much further East now, the next project can be found in Bangkok, Thailand. A short distance away in the same city is Bensi Nagar Sanaan’s project entitled Space of the Voids (Space of Remembrance and Forgetfulness). In this proposal the spaces in between are also examined, now called voids. Using different drawing techniques, the specific qualities of the voids are explored. The experience of the progression of spaces and the resulting narratives form the basis for this design. Sanaan: “Space of the Voids is a daily life memorial space which is built up inside one of the voids in central Havana. It is a fragmentation of different scenarios as a metaphor of changes in this city.”

The University Fund Delft (UfD) is a subsidised foundation that students and student associations can tap into, requesting for example study trips or abroad internships. The Fund also hosts several other awards apart from the UfD Best Graduate award for which Shirin Jaffri is nominated. A full list of the prizes can be found in the info box below. In the election process for the best graduate students, the UfD asked the deans of every faculty to select their nominee (i.e. the best graduate of that particular faculty) for the award event. For the Faculty of Architecture, the best graduate was found by selecting the four highest grades (complemented with the appropriate accolades) of the past academic year. The tutors of the four graduate students were asked to provide a short summary and some images of the graduation project. Director of education Christian van Ees, together with dean Wytze Patijn have subsequently elected Shirin Jaffri as the Bouwkunde nominee. Jaffri represents the Faculty of Architecture with a final grade of 9.5 and Cum Laude and Honourable Mention accolades.

The project Jaffri's thesis is entitled ‘Socioeconomic and Spatial Integration Strategies for Improved Housing and Modes of Production in La Victoria and San Joaquin in Santiago de Chile’. “In her project, she has formulated a strong position as well as propositions on the problématique of urban planning under neoliberal capitalism in particular of social housing,” says Jaffri’s tutor Heidi Sohn. “Shirin’s thesis is a profound example of independent thought reflecting a deep understanding of the multifaceted spatial discipline.” Instead of proposing an urban design, she proposes several strategic planning approaches to be adopted by the local communities. In her model, a collaborative ‘Community Council’ acts as “a tier of local government, positioned as the main organizing body in charge of formulating neighbourhood policies”. This council then also serves as the official representative of the community in municipal and governmental institutions. Jaffri aims to integrate all the involved parties: from the state to the municipality to the local inhabitants.“The inhabitants adopt a highly pro-active and participatory role within the decision-making processes, the implementation of specific urban interventions and the maintenance of the built and social environments,” says Sohn. As an alternative to the conventional top-down approach to strategic planning, Jaffri presents a way for the locals to emancipate themselves as decisive actors within the urban playing field. If developed further, it has the potential to be applied to many developing urban areas around the world. Whether this project will suffice to award Jaffri with the Best Graduate award of the University Fund will become clear on November 25. Jaffri: “It will be difficult to compete with the hardcore TU Delft faculties such as Aerospace Engineering or Applied Sciences. Urbanism is a multi-disciplinary field that extends its reach into the economical, social and political sciences. I shall do my very best to represent Bouwkunde.” The Faculty of Architecture will be rooting for her.

Dit onderzoek laat zien hoe commercialisering in de vijftiende eeuw heeft geleid tot het ontstaan van ‘typisch’ moderne kenmerken van de bouwwereld, zoals de scheiding tussen ontwerp en uitvoering, openbare aanbesteding, prefab en de combinatie van tekening en bestek. De Renaissance wordt over het algemeen beschouwd als de bakermat van de moderne architect. Uit dit onderzoek blijkt echter dat het ontstaan van het beroep van architect in de Nederlanden al in de Late Middeleeuwen gezocht moet worden. In deze periode vonden enkele cruciale economische en organisatorische ontwikkelingen plaats die nauwelijks een rol hebben gespeeld in eerder onderzoek. In Europa werden grootschalige bouwprojecten meestal in eigen beheer uitgevoerd. Bij een dergelijke organisatie werkten steenhouwers en metselaars tegen dagloon in de bouwloods die zich altijd in de buurt van het bouwproject bevond. De technische leiding lag bij de loodsmeester, die behalve ontwerper vaak ook fulltime werkopzichter was. Omdat in de Nederlanden vanaf de veertiende eeuw bouwwerkzaamheden steeds meer openbaar aanbesteed werden, was de permanente aanwezigheid van de architect in de bouwloods niet meer nodig. Ontwerp, bewerking van bouwmaterialen en assemblage werden fysiek gescheiden. Dit maakte het mogelijk voor enkele architecten om aan meerdere projecten tegelijk te werken en het bouwproces op afstand te coördineren. Daardoor maakten de instrumenten om het bouwproces op afstand te leiden in deze periode een belangrijke vernieuwing mee: voortaan werd er een pakket samengesteld van tekeningen, gedetailleerde werkbeschrijvingen (bestek) en detailontwerpen (steenhouwersmallen). Deze instrumenten vormden niet alleen een werkbeschrijving voor de aannemer, maar waren ook noodzakelijk om het gewenste resultaat vast te leggen om de kans op conflicten bij oplevering te verkleinen.

Dit onderzoek laat zien hoe de beroepen van architect en aannemer zich in de late Middeleeuwen ontwikkelden. Bovendien wordt aangetoond dat met de scheiding tussen ontwerp en uitvoering en het ontstaan van marktwerking, openbare aanbesteding, prefab en de combinatie van tekening en bestek, de basis werd gelegd van onze huidige architectenpraktijk en bouweconomie.

Noot van de redactie: in de publicatie van het Management Team, ‘My Living Faculty’, wordt het faculteitsbeleid voor de komende jaren uiteengezet. Naar aanleiding van deze publicatie heeft ‘Harry Kovert‘ in het vorige nummer van B Nieuws betoogd dat de afdeling RE&H zich moet losmaken van Bouwkunde. Hieronder een reactie op dit betoog.
Waarom vluchten? Wie is toch die Harrie, die een vurig pleidooi houdt om RE&H te verkassen naar TBM, maar daarbij vergeet te melden, wat zijn eigen positie en belang is in deze discussie? Mijn naam is Peter de Jong, en als docent Bouweconomie is mijn belang om te blijven vrij groot. De belangrijkste ‘asset’, om in vastgoedtermen te blijven spreken, van onze studenten is juist de bouwkundige kennis die ze opdoen in hun BSc. Om duurzaam, of überhaupt zinnig, te kunnen adviseren, investeren, ontwikkelen of managen, is die kennis van het gebouw van essentiële waarde. In mijn beleving is het bestaansrecht van de afdeling voor een belangrijk deel ontleend aan de vraag vanuit het veld, om na een periode waarin de nodige projecten flink uit de hand liepen, gevolgd door het invliegen van allerlei bedrijfskundige types, die vooral wisten te vertellen dat het goedkoper en sneller moest, toch vooral managers op te leiden die wel kennis hadden van ontwerpen en bouwen. Het gaat zelden uitsluitend om ‘sneller en goedkoper’, maar meer om het juiste gebouw met de juiste functionaliteit op de juiste plek. Daarbij is niet de kostenkant maar de waardekant de focus. We hebben dus erg veel aan onze collega’s van architectuur, stedenbouw en bouwtechnologie. Daarbij geven we ook het nodige terug. Het is van belang om ook architecten die niet kiezen voor een managementfunctie, maar desondanks als projectarchitect of zelfstandig ondernemer daar meer mee bezig zijn dan ze
lief is, de nodige vaardigheden bij te brengen. Dit is per definitie natuurlijk onvoldoende maar dat zal elke ondersteunende groep over hun onderdeel van mening zijn. Ondersteunend, omdat alleen al door de aantallen architectuur de hoofdmoot is. Te weinig omdat terecht de focus dient te liggen bij het ontwikkelen van de ontwerpende kwaliteiten. Anderzijds is Architectuur per definitie het meest afhankelijk van de inbreng van andere disciplines. De oproep van Harrie voor meer samenwerking kan ook vanuit Bouwkunde. Ik neem zonder meer aan dat wij elders meer kunnen verdienen, waarschijnlijk zelfs nog meer als we geen onderwijs meer doen. Dit alles wil nog niet
zeggen dat ik ‘My Living Faculty’ volledig onderschrijf; ook hier zou de aandacht uit moeten gaan naar waardevermeerdering i.p.v. kostenreductie. Maar ik wil daaraan wel meewerken vanuit Bouwkunde, mijn hart ligt hier. Misschien moeten elkaar vaker de liefde verklaren; al hebben we dan geen geld, dan hebben we in ieder geval elkaar nog.

It should be someone who is good at financing and management, they do not not necessarily have to be an architect or from our own faculty.
Austin Schulte, Msc1 Dwelling I think the new dean should be able to step up and sort out all the different issues within the teaching staff, so that there is some sort of standard and that students know about it.
Walter Lockefeer, Instructor BT The dean has to be a versatile person, maybe a woman, and not an architect. Architects place too much emphasis on design. We need to find a better balance between design, reasearch and education.

It would be good if he/she practised the profession, to make sure we are being educated for the real world. The education should be the first priority, especially within the budget cuts. Also, this person should be well-known, or have a good professional network, so that he/she can bring more qualified people to the school, be they teachers or researchers. They should understand the profession and the schooling here, but they don't need to have graduated from architecture in Delft.
Chen Huihua, The Why Factory, exchange student It is very important that the dean listens to the ideas of the students and really decides for the community. In Singapore, our dean wasn't very approving and supportive of students' ideas, so I think that's crucial. The dean must have some experience in our field, but doesn't need to be very well-known.
