Gezocht: kandidaten voor de OdC en de OR HANS WAMELINK

De kracht van een studententeam Het afgelopen jaar ben ik betrokken geweest bij een van de dreamteams van de TU Delft, het team Prêt-à-Loger. Een groep gemotiveerde en energieke studenten die de uitdaging zijn aangegaan een oplossing te bedenken voor de verduurzaming van naoorlogse woningen in ons land. Het resultaat is een doordacht ontwerp dat vervolgens fysiek gebouwd is en als inzending heeft deelgenomen aan de prestigieuze Solar Decathlon Competitie.

Deze competitie vond afgelopen zomer plaats in Versailles. Ontwerpen van twintig teams uit de gehele wereld zijn op een terrein bij het roemrijke Chateau van de Zonnekoning gebouwd en beoordeeld tijdens tien wedstrijdonderdelen.

Het Delftse team heeft met haar inzending veel belangstelling getrokken van de nationale en internationale pers. En terecht! In totaal heeft het team vijf prijzen in de wacht gesleept: eerste prijzen voor ‘duurzaamheid’ en ‘communicatie en maatschappelijk bewustzijn’; tweede prijzen voor ‘energie-efficiency’ en ‘bouwmanagement en veiligheid’ en in de eindstand eindigde het team op het podium met een derde plaats. Het huis is inmiddels op de Green Village tegenover het sportcentrum te bezichtigen.

Het mag duidelijk zijn: deze prestatie vervult iedereen met trots, zowel de studenten zelf als collega’s die het team begeleid hebben. Een prestatie die mogelijk was door de sterk ontwikkelde competenties binnen dit dreamteam: leiderschap, toewijding, doorzettingsvermogen, creativiteit en de bereidheid tot samenwerken. Samenwerken om elkaars competenties optimaal te benutten, maar ook om kennis vanuit verschillende disciplines te integreren (in het team waren verschillende faculteiten/opleidingen vertegenwoordigd).

Afgelopen maandag, tijdens de opening van het academisch jaar, sprak vicepresident Anka Mulder over het oplossen van grote maatschappelijke problemen. Creativiteit noemde zij daarbij als succesfactor. En dat gecombineerd met een multidisciplinaire aanpak. Ze heeft gelijk, het team Prêt-àLoger is daarvan het bewijs. Het is een weerspiegeling van het innovatieve vermogen van onze faculteit.

Ik hoop dat de successen van het team Prêt-à-Loger een inspiratiebron zijn voor studenten om nieuwe, multidisciplinaire teams op te starten. De faculteit zal soortgelijke initiatieven van harte ondersteunen.

Voel jij je als werknemer verbonden met de faculteit en wil je in een team van elf meer kunnen betekenen voor je collega’s? Dit is je kans!

Op 3 en 4 november is het zo ver, dan mogen alle medewerkers weer stemmen op de kandidaten voor de ondernemingsraad (OR) en de onderdeelcommissie van de ondernemingsraad (OdC) van de faculteit Bouwkunde. Ook is er de mogelijkheid om je vóór 1 oktober verkiesbaar te stellen voor zowel de OR als de OdC. De huidige OdC heeft de termijn van drie jaar er alweer bijna opzitten. Als het medezeggenschapsorgaan van de faculteit behartigen zij de belangen van het bouwkundepersoneel. Daarnaast denken zij mee over de financiën en de beleidsstukken van de faculteit. Twee keer per maand komen de elf leden van de OdC samen: één keer voor een interne vergadering en één keer voor het overleg met de

decaan. Zowel wetenschappelijk als ondersteunend personeel is welkom om zich kandidaat te stellen. Alle medewerkers die zich verkiesbaar willen stellen worden, na aanmelding bij een van de huidige leden, uitgenodigd voor een bijeenkomst die eind september zal plaatsvinden.

Met de Open Oproep voor projectvoorstellen zoekt IBA Parkstad naar buitengewone ideeën en actieve mensen. Iedereen die wil helpen de toekomst van Parkstad vorm te geven wordt opgeroepen kleine of grote projecten in te dienen die passen binnen de kwalificatiecriteria van IBA. Parkstad werkt op een unieke manier aan haar toekomst: door het organiseren van een Internationale Bau Ausstellung (IBA). Met deze IBA wil Parkstad een impuls geven aan economie, ruimte én samenleving. Tot 2020 functioneert IBA Parkstad als laboratorium en is het een motor voor vernieuwende ideeën en toonaangevende projecten. De kern van de IBA bestaat uit een reeks spraakmakende en hoogwaardige projecten die Parkstad transformeren en vernieuwen.

Kenmerkend voor IBA Parkstad is open innovatie. Dit krijgt vorm in de Open Oproep voor projecten. De projectvoorstellen en -ideeën voor de eerste selectieronde dienen voor 1 november 2014 ingediend te zijn. De inzending bestaat uit een projectbeschrijving in maximaal 2000 woorden plus beeldmateriaal.

DR. BUCKY LAB

"MARCEL BILOW IS 'TEACHER OF THE YEAR" Studenten aan de faculteit Bouwkunde kunnen elk jaar stemmen op hun favoriete docent. Stylos en de Educational Board organiseren de ‘Teacher of the Year’ wedstrijd. Dit jaar ging deze eervolle titel naar Marcel Bilow. Hij volgt hiermee Engbert van der Zaag op en liet de overige genomineerden, Everhard Korthals Altes en Sake Zijlstra, achter zich. Bnieuws vraagt zich af wat Marcel Bilow – a.k.a.

Dr. Bucky Lab - nu zo’n goede docent maakt.

DOOR JIP PIJS We kennen jou als de man achter het Bucky Lab. Wat is dat precies?

Naast mijn functie als universitair docent ben ik bezig voor het Bucky Lab. Het is een traject in het eerste semester van de mastertrack Building Technology. We leren de student in één semester hoe je vanuit een concept naar een werkend prototype gaat.

Meestal zijn de problemen die we de studenten voorleggen bouwconstructief van aard.

Wij geven een thema en de studenten kiezen hun opdracht. De prototypes worden gemaakt in onze mobiele werkplaats. Alles wat je kunt verzinnen, kunnen we daar maken. We gebruiken een hele waaier aan productiemethodes: zagen, boren, 3D-printen, lasersnijden enzovoorts. We werken op schaal 1:1, waarbij soms houten balkjes een aluminium extrusieprofiel nabootsen bij gebrek aan geld of tijd. Daarnaast maken de studenten bouwtekeningen en productietekeningen.

Waarom de bijnaam Dr. Bucky Lab? Ik ben aan de TU Delft doctor geworden. Ik ben hier begonnen aan mijn PhD bij Ulrich Knaack onder begeleiding van Mick Eekhout. Ik ben er trots op doctor te zijn en ‘Dr. Bucky Lab’ is een synoniem geworden voor mijn gekte. Ik houd van productiemethodes, ik houd van gereedschappen en ik houd er van samen met studenten te werken. Alle e-mails onderteken ik met ‘Dr. Bucky Lab’. Dat geeft ook een samenhangende groep, een identiteit.

Als de mobiele werkplaats opgebouwd is, hoe ziet jouw dag er dan uit?

Als de bouwweken beginnen, neem ik twee weken vakantie van mijn andere baan als adviseur. Om half acht ben ik er en ik verlaat de werkplaats pas om half zeven ’s avonds weer. Ik ben als een kapitein op een boot: de eerste en de laatste aan boord. ’s Ochtends of ‘s avonds ga ik dan nog bij leveranciers en sponsoren onderdelen halen.

Zie je jezelf als docent of onderzoeker?

Ik zou zeggen een student. Ik ben altijd op zoek en nieuwsgierig. Ik vind veel dingen net zo snel saai als studenten. Als we op bezoek gaan bij bedrijven, wil ik ook geen ellenlange verhalen horen. Ik kan me goed inleven in de student. Ik weet wat ze nodig hebben. In de rol van docent kan ik wel altijd stappen vooruit denken. We hebben maar twee weken om te bouwen. Ik heb alvast de lijm of de siliconenkit klaar liggen. Als ze er na een kwartiertje om komen vragen, zijn ze vaak verbaasd: ‘Je wist het al!’

Je bent zelf dus een handige klusser?

Ja, vanaf een jaar of vier kon ik al solderen. Ik maakte gekke koperen dingetjes aan elkaar.

Ik ben tot metselaar opgeleid voor ik aan de architectuurstudie begon. Ik wilde eerst huizen maken, voordat ik huizen wilde tekenen. Ik weet hoe het is om met zwaar weer zo’n huisje te bouwen. De architect heeft het makkelijk in zijn warme kantoortje! Om iets nieuws te leren, kijk ik vaak filmpjes op YouTube. Ik maak zelf dan ook kleine Bucky Lab filmpjes. Het gaat ook om het sharen en aandacht generen.

Wat heb je gedaan deze zomer?

Wat ik hier doe, dat doe ik thuis ook. Ik ben net verhuisd en ga een mooie werkplaats

inrichten. Die werkplaats is net het Bucky Lab. Ik ben altijd aan het klooien. Als anderen tv kijken, kijk ik op YouTube hoe je een vingerlasverbinding maakt. Ik ben een verzamelaar van vaardigheden. Twee jaar geleden draaiden we een semester textiel. Toen heb ik gewoon een naaimachine gekocht en ben ik tasjes gaan naaien voor mijn iPad. Je moet iets willen en vervolgens opzoeken hoe je het kan maken.

Draag je die wil ook over aan je studenten?

Het moet altijd een doel hebben. De studenten willen echt het probleem oplossen en bij wijze van spreken sterven voor hun project. Dat verbaast mij elke keer weer.

Waar zie je het Bucky Lab in de toekomst?

Ik zou nog meer bekendheid willen krijgen en een nog betere relatie met de industrie. Mijn eigen droom is een Discovery Channel Bucky Lab over tien jaar. Ik kijk graag MythBusters.

Zij onderzoeken dingen en maken het vervolgens. Wij hebben ook die potentie, omdat we met onze duurzame oplossingen de wereld net een klein beetje beter kunnen maken.

MAX RISSELADA We students might not be fully aware of who he is. Maybe you’ve seen his name on the spine of a book or you happened to pass him in the hallway. However, we’ve all enjoyed the fruits of his labor. Max Risselada’s more than half a century spanning career has not only helped shape our knowledge of architecture, but also helped shape notable architects and educators, from Frits Palmboom to Dick van Gameren. On the 12th of September, there will be no denying Risselada's influence, as his final exhibition "Patient (Re)Search" takes over the Oostserre. In a two hour long conversation, Risselada shared his life and insights with Bnieuws.

BY DAPHNE BAKKER I read you came to architecture through your love of drawing.

Indeed, it was not a deliberate choice to study architecture. I moved to the Netherlands, from Indonesia, when I was twelve in order to continue my education. This experience made a huge impression on me, it was as if I discovered this wonderful Western world. Music, dance, I was amazed that this existed and I wanted to be part of it. I wanted to be a dancer, but that was unheard of in those times, especially in Indo-Dutch families. Since I was intelligent, I ended up in Delft. I enjoyed the process of drawing and that’s how I subconsciously chose architecture.

How did you eventually develop a love for architecture?

In the beginning I just did what the professors asked of me. I was not critical at all. Slowly I started to understand what architecture was about, I started to develop a sensitivity for it. It was through my friends and peers, who were critical. They actively looked beyond the curriculum to see what was happening in the outside world. Since the education was quite authoritarian, this turned out to be a difficult task. Students were not involved in the decisions that were made by the faculty and the curriculum, because it somehow reflected the worldview of the professor. I simply accepted that this was how the world functioned. I only awakened to adventure through my friends, who were part of the more critical students, openly questioning the education before the revolt of 1969.

reasons. I gave a lot to Van Eyck and received very little in return. This had to do with his own personal circumstances. He was a man with a huge ego and he needed to prove himself. Though I was very involved in the democratization process as a teacher, I couldn’t take the never-ending debates and meetings that came along with it. I decided I needed a change and wanted to go as far away as possible. Before I left, I curated my first exhibition together with Gerrit Oorthuys, the Russian exhibition. We had friends, architects and students, in Prague, and they instilled in us a fascination for Russian avant garde architecture of the 1920’s. During the Prague Spring, we were planning on visiting Russia with them, but on the day we left the Netherlands, Russia invaded Czechoslovakia.

We ended up going to Russia by ourselves and it turned out to be deeply fascinating, but also terrifying experience. Not just because we encountered these amazing buildings of the avant garde, but because we also experienced this paranoid world of Soviet Russia. A great exhibition resulted from this. All the while, the democratization of the faculty was in full swing and the exhibition seemed tied to the movement - a lot of students were reading Marx. It was a coincidence we were not completely happy with, since our focus was the idealism of those avant garde architects and not the socio-economic implications of the communist movement.

"I LEARNED A LOT FROM MY STUDENTS"

What were the first steps that lead to the student protest in 1969?

When I graduated in 1965, there was an intense debate around the new building for the Faculty of Architecture, designed by Van den Broek and Bakema. The entire program of the building was developed behind closed doors. But during construction, it became clear that the design was based on the education system that the students considered obsolete – the so-called year system. Back then everything was divided into five years and each year would get a floor in the new building. Students rebelled against this concept and desired “vertical ateliers”, in which students from various stages in their education could work together and learn from each other.

The construction sparked a debate with the aim of adapting the design to the needs of the students.

Why did you pursue a career in education after your studies?

There were two reasons I chose education. Because I had good grades, I could get a four year contract in Delft and avoid military service. What drew me to education was the fact that I had learned so much from my peers during my studies. I had a sensitivity towards learning and I which I had developed through collaborating with other students. That was how I got my start in education and this determined my fate [laughs]. I started working as the assistant of Aldo van Eyck.

You went all the way to Rome to ask him personally?

I did, I knew him and his work because, as students we had invited him to come and talk. He took me on as his assistant and I ended up giving him the next four years of my life. Through him, we organized the first vertical ateliers.

Yet sometimes you did venture out into practice?

I spent four years at the faculty and at that point I needed a change for two

You mentioned you needed a change, what did you end up doing?

I wanted to escape Russia and Delft and ended up in the West Coast of the States. However the same things were happening there and I ended up right inside the turmoil again [laughs]. This was a fascinating period. I worked for Eames and lived in Venice Beach. That’s where everything was happening! I started exploring alternative constructions, such as the low-tech Buckmister Fuller domes, vernacular architecture and the balloon frame. In the States, construction was still a craft. When I finally returned to the Netherlands a year later, I wrestled with my next move: to return to education or to practice architecture. For a while, I ended up doing a little of both, but education won out. Also because the generation which came after the democratization process, was very involved and wanted to create something meaningful. They took me along on their journey and I became, as I like to call it, their “fellow traveler”. I needed to work hard in order to catch up on their fascinations, to be a better teacher. It was a nice collaboration and that’s still how I view education - I learned a lot from my students. We would go on excursions, visit archives, sometimes it seemed like we were working in a architecture office. A lot of the exhibitions were developed as a result of this collaboration with my students.

Does this collaborative relationship between student and teacher still exist within the faculty?

Now it seems to be completely different. It might be due to a different attitude, students are less independent. I also think it is because of the lack of time. The education has been broadened. This has its advantages, such as the introduction of management and social housing. On the other hand, it has led to an expansion of the curriculum. Slowly the additional courses started taking up more time. Compared to the 60s, the variety of courses and tracks is now immense. In the 70s there was a lot of freedom to determine your own programme. One third of the design projects could be shaped by students and teachers, allowing students to explore their own fascinations.

When did it change?

When they introduced the two-phase structure in 1982. The curriculum was cut down from five years to four years. It was a budget cut and the free time was sacrificed. A few years later, they switched back to five years, but now it was too late. The new system with all the additional courses had become embedded in the faculty. That was the that the time to reflect and collaborate, which is key to the design process, was taken away. The idea that design requires time has disappeared. Now it is considered a process of collecting and combining different sources of knowledge.

Where did your fascination for Brazilian architecture come from?

It has a special background. My wife was born in Brazil to Dutch parents, but they decided to leave because of the military coup in 1964. That’s when I met her in Delft. Thirty years later she finally returned and realized that she was Brazilian all this time, it was her home. That was the start of my relationship with Brazil. It was also during this period that Aldo van Eyck, along with Stylos and my help, brought the Lina Bo Bardi exhibition to the Netherlands. It is funny how he always managed to cross my path! [laughter].

What were the drawbacks and advantages of the democratization of the faculty?

The democratization was an action against authority. In that sense it was fantastic. There was renewed energy, since people were allowed to be themselves and determine their own path. This energy was often paired with aggression, which at that moment was beneficial, but turned out to be disruptive when the time had come to create a new learning environment.

I think that was the problem. Everyone took a position and refused to budge, compromise was mostly out of the question. This lead to fragmentation and the faculty consisted of all of these small, insular groups in which you were safe from the aggressive negotiation with others. What is now formally determined through the various studios, was an informal development back then. A very important advantage was that students had a say in their education and things were transparent.

How did the Lina Bo Bardi exhibition evolve?

Aldo had met Bo Bardi in 1968, but never heard from her since. Many years later, he saw an exhibiton of her work in London and was very impressed and surprised that we were so oblivious of her work. Uncharacteristically, he crusaded to have her exhibition in the Netherlands. However no one, not even the NAi, was interested since she was unknown then. That’s when Aldo got Stylos to agree. Through this exhibition, my contact with Brazil grew and it led to me being named curator of the Dutch exhibition during the Biennale in Sao Paulo in 1999. It was during that Biennale that I was introduced to Lelé’s work and the rest is history. I love being in Sao Paulo, it is wonderful there. It reminds me of Indonesia. The fruits, the trees and their enormous roots. What left the biggest impression was the experience of walking down the street. The chaotic and unwieldy sidewalks of Sao Paulo reminded me of how I used to walk barefoot on the street in Indonesia. The sensation of feeling the ground as you’re walking, it was like déjà vu. An amazing experience.

Is this no longer the case?

Indeed, the faculty is no longer democratic. We have no idea what the people on top decide and they have little idea of what is happening within the workplace and the ateliers. This seems to me as a relative outsider.

Why do you think that people have again started to look into the work of Team 10 and its members such as Bakema?

This generation is a victim of media, due to the ease in finding information on any topic imaginable. As a result they can be easily manipulated by media. The books published play a role in the resurgence of interest. The economic crisis has also played a role. There is a growing backlash towards “the new” and “iconic” that has dominated architecture. Globalization and the influx of capital resulted in the delusions, which have marred the profession. For example, I was very annoyed by the construction of the new hall of Rotterdam Central Station. It required an immense temporary support structure, with its own foundation, to realize the building. That’s not how we should be build. The work of Brazilian architect Lelé is the complete opposite of this kind of megalomaniac construction. He uses a minimal input to realize a maximum effect. This is how I believe our discipline should approach the design. In that sense I am very much a modernist, I believe you can achieve the best qualities through the simplest of means. Not just within the design process, but also during construction. The construction workers of Lelé’s are trained to be craftsmen and you can see that they enjoy their work. It is almost unique in the world, I’m amazed he has not received the attention he deserves.

Can you tell us something about your final exhibition?

The starting point for this exhibition was time, the time required to reflect and collaborate, which I mentioned earlier. It will consist of a series of micro-histories, fragments of the many exhibitions we have worked on. The name of the exhibition, Patient (Re)search, refers to Le Corbusier’s “la recherche patiente”. The aim is to express the time, to search and research, required within the educational process. Many timelines will be featured and some projects will be highlighted, such as LeCorbusier’s Villa Savoye, which had a very particular design process, consisting of many tangents. What I truly hope to express in the exhibition is not just the importance of time, but also the importance of collaboration. The exhibition is about my student-assistants and I. Any advice for students you’d like to share with us?

Students have to become less consumptive, they should be more involved and amazed. At the same time also more critical in expressing their thoughts and feelings about education and the things that need to change.

As part of the lecture series entitled ‘The Berlage’ on 18 September, Max Risselada will be in conversation with Kenneth Frampton on their different quests and the occasions on which their parts have crossed and diverged. Moderated by Salomon Frausto, the event will start at 18.30 in the Oostserre.

CONCRETE CONES

Tim Jongerius winner of this year's Concrete Design Competition

Faculty of Architecture Masters student Tim Jongerius, with his project "Concrete Cones", won the Concrete Design Competition this year. The theme of the competition was 'Elegance'. Even though there were a record number of entries, (over two hundred participants from all over the Netherlands), Tim came out on top. The secret to his success was first and foremost 'making' and finding out through doing. His concern with beauty, and his exploration through trial and error, informed a good technical design, which can also stimulate any number of reflections on aesthetics. His work is a thing in itself, a new mirror of our world. Producing complexity from something very simple is after all Tim's forte. After speaking with Tim it's clear that he is very much from our time.

Tim represents a new wave of 'makers' who are mastering digital fabrication techniques and welcoming a new era in the field of architectural production. A lovely time of confident, unique and affordable beauty. We can only hope that Tim and others like him will continue to make their mark.

The design arose as part of the "Ornamatics" course here at the Faculty. The basic task was to develop a wall tile with connections on every side using 3D modeling, printing and then

prototype testing through casting.So it came from a very tactile, "makers" position, exploring material, connections, detailing and technique.

The tile needed to be able to connect around a corner and at the top of the building, and at the roof. It was just a tile that connects nicely on every side of the building, and in relation to the other tiles. It had to be beautiful that was the main aim of the course.

To me simple objects are beautiful. Simple elements that together can make something more complex give me a feeling of satisfaction. The development just started with a shape that on one side is small and the other side is big so you could stack it and then turn it around 180 degrees. product How did you design the tiles?

I used SketchUp to begin with, and then did a small model with the 3D printer. After I saw how things might work, I started casting one to one and experimenting with concrete. I first made the negative shape of the tile in solid wood with a lathe and from there plastic molds to pour the concrete into. The pre-mixed concrete I used was a fine, powdery mix blended with fiberglass. It was very smooth, strong and also precise.Still there was a small margin of error, every cast being slightly different, giving the result a subtle crafted, handmade feeling. Though the process can be quite tricky, the molds were essentially just two half cones cut in a particular way which allowed them to slide into each other. The deeper you insert the one cone into the other, the more hollow the cone becomes. This simple casting technique led to a plethora of variations. You can play with it and create something very complex with something quite simple. That was my goal.

Who encouraged you to enter the Concrete Design Competition?

It was one of the tutors of the Ornamatics course, Martijn Stellingwerff. All the teachers in the course were very encouraging and helped me a great deal during my design process.

Do you think the Ornamatics course gave you something special?

I like this course because it was less restrictive than other courses, there were fewer conditions to consider. It was about form and beauty.

Hands on. It was also exciting because you could see that through contemporary techniques and digital fabrication processes. there is a way to reintroduce ornamentation and one off designs affordably into building elements,.

What were your expectations when you entered the competition?

I had no expectations. It was also the first competition I had ever entered and I had never heard of the competition.

How did you feel when you found out you won?

Well, first of all I got a call to ask me if I could be at the awards ceremony. I was planning to attend anyway, but this call made me wonder if I had a chance of winning a prize.

Then I was there just sitting in the audience watching everyone else go up for their prize; honorable mentions, third prize, second prize and then OMG first prize and they were calling my name. It was an incredible feeling. I felt great. The fully paid master class in Dublin and the thousand euro cash prize also helped of course.

How was the Master Class in Dublin?

It was the end of the summer vacation and I had just returned from Tanzania, so I was quite tired. But while the course was very intense, nine in the morning to ten at night, every day at the university, it also gave a lot of positive energy. I met amazing people. I think perhaps the connections I made there will lead to future collaborations. The lectures were also excellent. There were participants there from all over Europe, Ireland of course, Turkey, Norway and Germany. I was working in a group of four with one Turkish guy, a German and a Norwegian. The Turkish delegation couldn't handle the Irish weather so they all left on the third day. [Laughs] Our task was to design a one to one concrete bench. The themes were fabric, local and elegance. We designed a bench to cope with rain using a fabric to make the mold. Again we just

used a simple repeating element that could be varied in height leading to more complex forms.

Where are you now in your study? And where do you see yourself going with your work?

Well, first I would like to do an internship to see how the real world compares to the study of Architecture. Here at the faculty I like the interior studios because they have avery direct, specific and physical approach to making good quality architecture. I am in my second year of my master now, and am taking a bit longer than planned, but for me, the design process isn’t something you should rush. It takes time to develop well-considered and beautiful things. I also find it important to explore possibilities, for example by following courses like Ornamatics. I want to develop my design skills to the fullest. I must confess that, in the end, I am drawn to the design aspect more than anything else. Not mass produced objects like in the case of Industrial design but smaller series and commissions, I want to design well-made and beautiful objects and elements.

FROM VITRUVIUS TO ALBERTI T Jo Coenen on why he introduced th From the 1st of January 2015 a new law on the architect's title will come into effect in The Netherlands. In a nutshell, if you want to qualify for the architect's title, in the fields of architecture, urbanism, interior or landscape architecture, you need to follow a two year structured work experience program under the guidance of a mentor after you graduate. This period is called BEP, the beroepservaringperiode, or PEP, the Professional Experience Period. From now until December Bnieuws will cover the issues concerning the BEP. Through journalistic investigation we hope to explore and expose what the BEP actually means for graduates and for our profession as a whole. This past August we spoke to the mastermind behind the BEP, Professor, architect and former Rijksbouwmeester (Chief Government Architect) Jo Coenen to find out what the original reasoning was behind this new law and how he feels about the BEP now it is about to become a reality. BY JIP PIJS & BRIGITTE O'REGAN Do you remember the year 2000?

Perhaps some of our readers were still children then. Do you remember how when the clocks were about to strike midnight on new year’s eve, many people were waiting for the end of the world, an economic collapse or for all digital data to go poof and simply disappear? Despite popular apocalyptic expectations a new vibrant millennium began.

This was the year that Jo Coenen became the youngest person ever in 200 year history of the title to become Rijksbouwmeester in The Netherlands. At the age of 51 he had already won a reputation as a pioneer and paradigm shifter.

He was an active part of the wave of architects that rescued and reintroduced the importance of design, building craft and “pragmatism” into the profession after a national period of mindless technocratic production and stupendous architectural lows. This group of architects effectively put the Netherlands back on the map as one of the most exciting and influential countries for architecture globally. In his advisory role

as Rijksbouwmeester much was expected of Jo Coenen and everyone wondered what he would do. Surely he would not leave the world of architecture in The Netherlands unchanged? How would he make his mark?

Well, one answer to this question, nearly 15 years later, is the change to the requirements for the architect’s title. Through the introduction of a mandatory, reflective, two-year work experience component, called the BEP. This can be followed independently or in a group in an integrated manner.

What we now call the integrated BEP was first invented under the title of “Het Experiment” (The Experiment) in 2002. The first two-year test run took place from 2003-2005 under auspices of the Atelier Rijksbouwmeester. The Atelier was also founded during Jo Coenen's tenure to support the advisory role of the Rijksbouwmeester. The BEP forms part of a larger picture that Jo Coenen and his collaborators sought to shape for the field of architecture in The Netherlands.

What was the profession like in 2002 when you introduced The Experiment?

The world had not changed yet in 2002. There was a stable situation for architects, throughout the world, throughout Europe and especially in The Netherlands.

We had the best production of architecture and real estate development in Europe. The reason for this was what I call, the “Dutch Model” - a phenomenon that came into being in the mideighties. This is a term I introduced to explain to people all over the world the different factors contributing to the high quality spatial developments in The Netherlands. Of course, a stable, flourishing economy helped, but it was the Dutch Model, which made developments here unique.

What I had identified as the Dutch Model is an integrated way of approaching real estate and spatial development that involves the close cooperation of three sectors.

One is the government. One is the field of engineering and design in a broad sense, for instance: the architect, landscape architect, interior architect, building engineer, real estate manager, et cetera.

The last one is the private/public developer. In The Netherlands developments are about plot costs.

This creates a unique interdependence between the three actors. If one of them quits, the project falls apart. The Dutch Model resulted in major urban developments throughout the Netherlands, such as the Ceramique in Maastricht and the Eastern Harbour District in Amsterdam. These success stories became an export product.

Our special quality was much more than creating a nice façade with a nice colour. All the aspects and the very process itself were interesting. The Dutch architecture, engineering and infrastructure as a whole became an inspiration globally. Conversely, when I pinpointed the special Jo Coenen nature of our way of working here in the year 2000 in The Netherlands, we became

more self-aware. There then arose a need to consciously address and refine our competencies.

In 2002 the profession had witnessed and was witnessing radical and rapid changes. [Jo Coenen points to a modern looking architectural drawing board in the room] That drawing board over there might as well be considered an antique. The Dutch Model demanded more of the designer and our designs. The old-fashioned professional traditions were shattered. Our task became far more complex than simply making a drawing for a client. We needed to develop different qualities and communication skills.

What were you trying to resolve and address with The Experiment? What did you want to see achieved? And why?

At the heart of the task of the Rijksbouwmeester, is what Berlage called the duty to protect and promote the bouwkunst/ architecture. [Editors note: The word “bouwkunst” in Dutch is perhaps different from the English word architecture; it implies building art/ craft/ profession/application.

And cannot be separated from the act of making as well as referring to existing and traditional skills and built heritage]. I saw that there was an increasing gap between education and practice and a general lack of reflection on the nature of the task of the profession itself. This reflection was more necessary than ever before because of the rapid change and increasing complexity in our field. There was also a universal and normative tendency towards specialization. Our profession in the broadest sense is one of the last of the Mohicans. We are one of the only professional groups in our society that are allowed to establish relationships, and that is an art. I saw this role as being endangered.

TO BERLAGE TO THE PRESENT he BEP (Beroeps Ervaring Periode) years. To my eyes the education in The Netherlands had become too unstable, mentally unhinged.

The student is not to blame for this: it's the system. The system makes it impossible to become a good architect. There was acceleration in the production of knowledge along with increased departmental specialization; no one was looking at the connections and relationships anymore.

Later historians will call this time

the application. You have to teach this somewhere. Sure you might not want to build, fine, but that is something different, another direction. The coherence, the interdisciplinary factor is important if we want to direct and conduct the building the process.

You have to know what to do. Not just knowing where to look it up.

No, knowing it by heart and by practice. The education already had a long list of end terms that

"The system made it impossible to become a good architect" a revolution in knowledge and information. But in reality there simply was less time allotted to make the connections necessary to learn and understand.

Education needs reflection, a didactic moment. You can't just throw knowledge at students and expect them to learn. You need to reflect on the exercise together and begin to understand how things stand in relation to one another. In the sixties and seventies people graduated after eight years. Not only because they were partying, but because at least this much time was needed to understand and really learn.

There was this acceleration on the one hand and on the other hand the massive shift to ICT. Not to mention the increasingly complex projects and relationships in the profession. Yet no one was dealing with it. What is engineering? What is architecture? It’s harder to make these distinctions nowadays. There was a total transformation and metamorphose of the profession taking place.

As the head of the academies we had a responsibly to address this but it wasn't happening. Carel Weeber, in his time as professor of the Faculty of Architecture at the TU Delft, proclaimed that architectural education would become research based and that the application of architecture would be learned in practice. This became the axiom of Dutch Universities.

I have to think that this axiom is wrong. In my opinion what is happening in the universities cannot be considered research.

To treat research as merely trying to understand what is happening today is faulty. What we are dealing with here is the creative mind and spirit, the creative zeitgeist, the reality of building,

needed to be met. Because of the time pressure factor, there was nowhere in the education to integrate the necessary reflection and practical experience. It was enormous shame, an original sin that it had come to this.

The Experiment was born in an effort to make sure graduates could work within the Dutch Model. To ensure they would possess the basic skills necessary to build and learn the rotes of the profession. While also allowing time for the different generations to shape and reflect upon our role and value together.

The initial two-year experiment, consisting of work experience and mentorship, paired with reflective seminars and modules, was an enormous success. Both among graduates and mentors. Many big offices also participated. Even people who had no time made time because they enjoyed it so much.

On the basis of initial this success it was decided that it would be worthwhile to introduce this method nationally. We have had four test runs and refined it further.

With every round we have seen the same enthusiasm. Participants felt that it was a valuable addition to their education and mentors felt they had gained knowledge and insight too. There was age-old recognition of the mutual benefit of apprenticeship.

The graduate grows from novice to master and at the same time the profession learns and reflects with every graduate. Yet one of the most valuable outcomes, in my opinion, is that the BEP bringS us together as a group. While the integrated program, where you follow the modules in a collective setting, also strengthens interdisciplinary co-operation. The

Jo Coenen in 2014 modules offered overlap as much as possible meaning that landscape architects, urbanists, interior architects and architects, all follow the program together.

Why did the BEP need to become law?

One answer to this question is cultural habit: if it were to be taken seriously in Dutch society it needed to be founded on law. But the other answer is that architecture is a dangerous profession with a lot of responsibility. What I wanted in the end was that to build you needed the architect’s title and that not any Tom, Dick or Harry could call himself an architect. I wanted a guarantee of a level of insight and competency by those who carried the title. But ultimately I wanted it to become law that you would not get a building permit without the approval and signature of an architect. Despite the urgency I had, it has already taken over ten years to get only this far. Now to use the title you need two years work experience structured along the end-terms of the register. But to build that is still not necessary!

We still have ten years to go!

How do you feel about the BEP now it is about to be implemented?

Things of course are different now. I would like to refer the reader to two articles in which I am, as a Dutch architect, asked to give an account on the current

production trends in architecture in The Netherlands. The first article dates from the year 2000 when I became Rijksbouwmeester, and appears in the architecture magazine Abitare 417. The second is from this year 2013 and is published in L'industria delle costruzioni number 433.The difference between now and then is dramatic. What the profession is experiencing now is not a crisis, it's a disaster. I am afraid we will lose a whole generation because of it. The profession itself needs to come together and do something about this dire situation. I think the BEP will be the secret weapon we need.

At the moment there is no group coming forward to protect and promote our collective interests.

There is no solidarity. This, and enormous cuts to our sector and education have made it near impossible to bring about a coherent profession wide network to support the transition to the BEP. We want the costs of the BEP to be as low as possible and we are working to bring them down. Unfortunately there are now very few subsidies to assist graduates. It has been enormously frustrating.

We are doing everything we can.

We needed ten years just to make this small step. We need more time. Please let it grow and work with us on improving it. We can all influence this. I believe that we can trust that the BEP will be a step in the right direction for our profession.

BETWEEN REPRESENTATION

AND EXPERIENCE FILIPPO MARIA DORIA’S ARCHIPRIX WINNING LIBRARY FOR THE BLIND The Archiprix jury was blown away by Filippo Maria Doria’s idiosyncratic and dense approach to his design of a library for the blind in the Villa Borghese Park of Rome. Through utilizing everything from photography to literature, he managed to realize a multi-layered design which referred not just to how we experience architecture, but how we represent it. Filippo shared his inspiring project with Bnieuws.

The jury of the Archiprix lauded your research process. Can you share it with us?

I used various photographic machines. Through these I could explore something which you can call the difference between automatization and interpretation. The machines are automatic recorders and always do the exact same thing, but they are programmed in a way that they do something extremely specific. From a theoretical point of view, my interpretations of the surroundings were embedded in the way the machines were made. The pinhole camera was the first one and was addressing a singular shot. Then there was a handmade, wooden dolly camera. The third one was a combinatorial device, a software, inspired by non-linear narrative in experimental literature. It provided a synchronic way of addressing one single content - its output was a sequence of four strips of images. In the end I had a singular shot and a sequence. It was a multi-linear approach.

comes from a recollection. Also, consider some of the mayor poets, Homer, Milton and Borges, all were visually impaired. It is not so much that their blindness increased their ability of evoking visual imagery, as much as it gave them the possibility of foreseeing, of detecting the changes of the world before they occur. Their blindness transformed them into seers, visionaries. Rimbaud wrote; "I want to be a poet, and I'm working to make myself a Seer: you will not understand at all, and I hardly know how to explain it to you."( Letter of the visionary, 1871.)

What were the next steps?

I proceeded to map the images from the pinhole camera via a digital drawing. The camera had four holes and five plates inside in order to capture a three-dimensional image. Through the drawings I translated the physical space of the city into the flat planes of the screen. From this investigation through drawing, the architecture of the library evolved. It obtained the spatial quality of the drawing. Not only in the linearity of the space, but even in the fact that it was numerical - it had certain characteristics of a digital drawing. The strange thing was, no matter how much this library resembled a machine, someone pointed out to me that some of the digital drawings seemed to have been done by hand.

Here emerges the ambiguity between what is produced through automatism and what is made by human hand. This ambiguity was extremely inspiring to me. Take for example the patterns which are embedded in biological life, the genetic code. It is based on four letters which endlessly repeat. While the code on which computers are based on, again a repetitive pattern, are considered artificial and unnatural.

Even though the library is a digital system, it has the phenomenological feel of a forest. This told me a lot about architecture, which is normally considered to be in opposition of nature. This ambiguity, mystery between what is natural and artificial engenders a multiplicity of interpretations. In that way architecture can become evocative.

"THERE IS A STRONG RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DRAWING AND BLINDNESS "

How did these images then inform your project?

Through these photographic images I somehow understood that the notion of the image could be translated outside of the domain of the visual in such a way that imagination, the mind picture, becomes a lot more fertile than the strictly visual aspects of the representation, the image. That’s how the idea emerged to create a library for the blind. A library can be seen as a numerical system, as something that has the spatial quality of the drawing, the synesthetic qualities of drawing. The drawing can embody certain sensorial experiences which exceed the sense of sight. Then there is also a strong relationship between blindness and drawing.

According to Jacques Derrida, drawing deals much more with memory then perception. Take the story of the draftsman who has set out to draw a model. First there is this moment of observation of the model, but then when he is placing his pencil to paper, he is recalling the model from his memory. This distance between observation and the tracing of the model is the gap which allows the draftsmen to make his own interpretation.

This allows for differentiation. Different authors will have their own unique representation. This is taken even further in architectural drawings, since there is no model to imitate. The idea, the design, always

Your process was not just broad, informed via cinema and literature, but also very in-depth. Would you say that makes your project unique?

I wouldn’t know if it is unique. Architecture requires a broad base of knowledge. It seems that whenever architecture is distinguished from other fields of science, it is always exclusively related to construction, the technology of building.

However architecture can be approached through any subject matter. I think that if one wants to produce good architecture, one should stick his nose in a variety of things. However, architects run the risk of remaining superficial for the sake of being broad.

Were you expecting to win?

No, not at all. I was very surprised. I assumed that, because of the crisis and the reconsideration of the relevance of our discipline for society in general, many would have opted for a much more pragmatic and problem-solving approach. But the jury was from another generation. I really don’t know whether our generation will stick to the current scientific pragmatism and eschew this kind of approach to architecture.

Your project tackles the very nature of representation. Was this an interest of yours or did it stem from this project?

I have always loved drawing, but it was through the site investigation for this project that the distance between different interprations/frames on the city of Rome became evident to me. Specifically in the divergence between, on the one hand, the poetic and pessimistic point of view of filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini and, on the other hand, the great political ambition of the new Italian democratic government just after WWII. They believed that the new peripheral district in Rome, the Tuscolano, where my site was located, could enhance the quality of life of their inhabitants, belonging to the working class. In short, Architecture was damanded to express and fulfill the socialist's ideals of welfare, while Pasolini thought that this dream remained unfulfilled, since evil and misery are embedded in humanity and still evident in the tragedy taking place in the Tuscolano District.

Er zijn grenzen…

Tastbaar of denkbeeldig: grenzen zijn scherp of vaag, bros of taai, natuurlijk of bedacht, noodzakelijk of overbodig, duurzaam of tijdelijk, veelomvattend of kleinzielig, open of gesloten, roemrucht of betekenisloos, kieskeurig of onverschillig, bevochten of opgelegd, rekbaar of onverbiddelijk, mobiel of statisch, omsluitend of uitsluitend. Schier eindeloos zijn de mogelijke eigenschappen, die aan grenzen toe te kennen zijn. Grenzen gaan ook incognito en heten dan bijvoorbeeld wetten, regels, normen of etiquette. Grenzen bestaan in veel vormen, zoals bergruggen, rivieren, slagbomen, heggen, mijnenvelden, linten, verkeersborden, gevoelens, frustraties, trots of allergieën. Te veel om op te noemen.

Grenzen. Overal en altijd. Mijn vingers op het toetsenbord, huid op plastic, spierkracht tegen veerkracht, denkkracht tegen dommekracht, verbeelding tegen werkelijkheid, ik en de wereld om mij heen. Grens na grens na grens… Mijn lippen op die van haar, huid op huid, stevigheid en tederheid, oorlog en vrede, verleden en toekomst, verbond en scheiding. Grenzen, bemiddelaars, altijd tussen twee partijen, continu in stress, geboren slachtoffers, omdat zij betekenisloos sterven als hun taak volbracht is. Grenzen bestaan bij de gratie van verschil. Grenzen zijn vaak oorzaak van nieuwe grenzen.

Architecten ontwerpen grenzen. Grenzen tegen weersinvloed. Veiligheid, geborgenheid en functionaliteit worden door grenzen vastgelegd. Architectuur is begrenzing.

Muren, ramen, deuren. En omdat architecten gewetensvol ontwerpen maken zij grenzen betekenisvol, een rijk op zich. De grens, de bemiddelaar wordt dan voorzien van erkers, balkons, loggia’s, afdakjes, stoepjes. Zo wordt zij een belevenis, plek om te zijn. Ook leegte, ruimte of afstand kan dienst doen als grens.

Omdat de mens grenzen kent, moet de architectuur, om doelmatig te zijn, grenzen stellen. Omdat de mens – tegen beter weten in? - streeft naar vrijheid, moeten deze grenzen als geruisloos, als onzichtbaar en vooral aangenaam hun rol vervullen. Zij mogen niet gevoeld worden als obstakel, barrière of gevang, maar juist ervaren worden als dienaars van vrijheid.

DE HEILIGE DRIE-EENHEID Wie is er niet groot mee geworden? De drie begrippen waar architectuur over zou moeten gaan volgens onze eeuwenoude voorganger Vitruvius: firmitas, utilitas en venustas, oftewel duurzaamheid, doelmatigheid en uiterlijk schoon. Ontelbare keren in mijn studie heb ik docenten en professoren hierover horen spreken tijdens de colleges.

Maar vaak alleen ter inleiding. Vitrivius heeft het vak blijkbaar zo helder ingedeeld dat zijn theorie zich laat lenen om het belang van elk specifiek vakgebied mee te illustreren. Een mooi gevelontwerp, het belang van een goed functionerende plattegrond of bouwtechniek, alles laat zich inleiden met deze heilige drie-eenheid. En mocht dit niet het geval zijn, dan is de Nederlandse vertaling uit het Latijn vast wel op een succesvolle manier te rekken of te verdraaien. Naast deze begrippen behoeft het werk van Vitrivius natuurlijk geen diepere toelichting; zijn tien boeken over bouwkunde kunnen blijkbaar worden gereduceerd tot drie woorden.

Het deed mij vermoeden dat men elkaar steeds napraat over deze drie woorden in plaats van ze te onderwerpen aan enige kritische reflectie, laat staan Vitruvius zelf te lezen.

Zo heb ik besloten dat het tijd werd–het afstuderen komt in zicht–om zelf dit standaardwerk te lezen. Dus heb ik mijn nog onaangeroerde exemplaar, van mijn broer gekregen bij het beginnen van mijn studie, open geslagen. En direct in boek 1, hoofdstuk 3, ben ik de beroemde begrippen tegen gekomen: “De architectuur heeft drie deelgebieden: het maken van gebouwen, van zonnewijzers en van machines...Bij de uitvoering hiervan moet terdege aandacht worden geschonken aan duurzaamheid (firmitas), doelmatigheid (utilitas) en uiterlijk schoon (venustas). Duurzaamheid wordt gewaarborgd door het diep genoeg leggen van funderingen in solide bodem en door een zorgvuldige keuze van de bouwmaterialen, van welke soort ze ook zijn, zonder op de kosten te beknibbelen. Aandacht voor doelmatigheid vereist een perfecte verdeling van de ruimten, zonder

belemmering voor de gebruikers, en een praktische situering, aangepast aan de ligging die voor elke type vertrek het beste is. Het uiterlijk schoon is in acht genomen als het werk aantrekkelijk en sierlijk is om te zien en de maatvoering van de geledingen op een juiste berekening van evenwichtige verhoudingen berust.”

Het zijn de begrippen zoals we ze leren kennen, maar Vitruvius vindt het blijkbaar wel nodig deze drie woorden toe te lichten. Opvallend is dat hij deze begrippen niet centraal zet in zijn architectuurtheorie, maar dat ze betrekking hebben op de uitvoering van architectuur. Bouwkunde gaat niet over de heilige drie-eenheid. In boek 1, hoofdstuk 2 worden namelijk de grondbeginselen behandeld: “Bouwkunde bestaat uit ordening (ordinatio) en schikking (dispositio), uit harmonie (eurythmia), evenwichtige verhouding (symmetria), decorum (decor) en economie (distributio).”

Zo blijkt uit een korte studie van de eerste van de tien boeken dat volgens Vitruvius architectuur uit zes begrippen bestaat, niet simpelweg uit de ons onderwezen Heilige drie-eenheid. En zo is het met veel standaardwerken uit ons vakgebied; Le Corbusier gedachtengoed is niet tot slechts zijn vijf punten te reduceren en Learning from Las Vegas gaat over meer dan alleen de duck en de decorated shed.

Studenten kunnen een hoop lessen leren uit de standaardwerken wanneer zij uitgedaagd worden deze kritisch te bestuderen. Het is te hopen dat zij hier nog mogelijkheden voor zien in tijden waar termen zoals studeerbaarheid heilig zijn geworden.

WAT MAAKT EEN GOEDE DECAAN? Zeven cruciale thema’s voor de nieuwe decaan Bouwkunde

Henk Ovink, Principal van 'Rebuild by Design' en daarmee adviseur van de Amerikaanse overheid, riep zelfs op tot een debat over de invulling van het decaanschap. Een publieke discussie zou de ambitie en positionering van onze faculteit scherp kunnen stellen. Door spraakmakende gasten samen te brengen met studenten en de vakwereld kunnen we meepraten over onze toekomstige decaan. Wij zien de oranje tribune al vol zitten met geëngageerde studenten, kritische ontwerpers en belezen denkers uit het werkveld. Het is nu afwachten of er onder de hoede van bijvoorbeeld Henk Ovink, Winy Maas, Archined of Stylos zo'n debat wordt georganiseerd.

Door middel van een achttal interviews met betrokkenen inventariseerden Loer en Loerakker de belangrijkste thema’s voor de nieuwe decaan.

1. De decaan als verbindende factor De Faculteit Bouwkunde bestaat uit een algemene bacheloropleiding en zes gespecialiseerde masteropleidingen: architectuur, bouwtechnologie, landschapsarchitectuur, real-estate & housing, stedenbouw en geomatics.

Binnen de masteropleidingen zijn er verschillende leerstoelen met elk hun eigen hoogleraar en budgetten; een complex netwerk van afdelingen en studio's die zich met regelmaat kenmerkt als academisch wespennest vanwege de tegenstrijdige belangen. Naast de masteropleidingen is er ook nog de afdeling OTB en zijn er de postgraduate-opleidingen The Berlage en de European Post-master in Urbanism (EMU). Als PhD programma is er de Graduate School A+BE. De decaan geeft leiding aan al deze onderdelen en is daarom bij uitstek de verbindende factor van de faculteit. Daarnaast wordt het hoofd van de school geconfronteerd met hoge verwachtingen vanuit twee uitersten: de wetenschappelijke wereld en de beroepspraktijk.

De verbindende kracht vormen, blijkt in de dagelijkse praktijk van de faculteit niet makkelijk te zijn. Dirk Sijmons, hoogleraar Landschapsarchitectuur: “Het wij-gevoel, zoals dat gevoeld werd na de brand [faculteitsbrand 2008, red.], is zeldzaam en slecht ontwikkeld binnen de universiteit. Dit wij-gevoel leeft alleen binnen de leerstoelen en dat is niet genoeg, die korrelgrootte is te klein.” Nanne de Ru, directeur van Het Berlage, benadrukt ook het belang van de decaan als de verbindende factor: “Het is een breed en generalistisch vak. Aan de ene kant kan je er heel cultureel, theoretisch en onderzoekend mee bezig zijn en aan de andere kant kan je er heel ondernemend, engineerend en ontwerpend naar kijken. Ik denk dat dat juist de kracht van Delft is, dat al die verschillende invalshoeken aanwezig

zijn. Er is een sterke onderlinge afhankelijkheid en het zorgen voor besef van die afhankelijkheid is een belangrijke taak van de decaan.”

Laglas’ voorganger, Wytze Patijn, ziet eveneens een verbindende rol weggelegd voor de decaan: “Een van de grootste problemen van de faculteit is de verkokering: dat elke discipline zijn eigen mensen opleidt. Het gaat om individualisme, waarbij iedereen voor zijn eigen hachje vecht. Dit is bijvoorbeeld een groot probleem bij de architectuurafdeling: iedereen is voor zichzelf bezig, niemand ziet het gezamenlijke doel.”

Ook Winy Maas, hoogleraar Why Factory, hekelt het gebrek aan teamgeest: “Er heerst een verdedigingstechniek van de koninkrijkjes, want als je het gezamenlijke doel zou kunnen zien betekent dat misschien wel dat je zou moeten krimpen."

2. De roep om rust versus het verlangen naar visie Laglas kreeg bij haar aantreden in 2011 de expliciete opdracht om een gezonde financiële situatie te realiseren. Er vond daarom een ingrijpende bezuinigingsronde plaats die de faculteit gedwongen heeft te reorganiseren.

Met de vernieuwing van het bachelor-programma is de opleiding ook inhoudelijk ingrijpend verandert. Uit verschillende hoeken wordt er nu om rust gevraagd. Peter Boelhouwer, directeur van onderzoeksinstituut OTB: “Mijn vrees is dat er een decaan komt die de zaak weer op de schop gooit”.

Oud-decaan Beunderman duidt deze angst; “Men zoekt altijd een argument om het anders te willen, men wil niet behouden of verbeteren, maar de eerste reflex bij velen is om iets te vernieuwen. Dat moet je voor een deel toestaan, maar het is ook gevaarlijk, het kan leiden tot inefficiëntie en kwaliteitsverlies. Het ideale onderwijssysteem bestaat niet, maar we hebben de laatste jaren zoveel veranderd in het onderwijs, laten we het in vredesnaam nu de tijd geven om zich te ontwikkelen.” Deze behoefte tot voortzetting van het uitgezette beleid lijkt deels te verklaren door de voortijdige beëindiging van de vierjarige termijn waarvoor een decaan normaal aangesteld wordt. Laglas, veel geprezen door de geïnterviewden in dit artikel, stopt na 3,5 jaar. Dirk Sijmons: “Karin heeft een enorme bijdrage geleverd aan de faculteit, maar gaat te vroeg weg. Aan zo'n klus moet je 5 à 6 jaar werken om de boel goed op de rails te zetten, om je stempel op de hele organisatie te drukken”.

De vraag naar rust en continuïteit staat op gespannen voet met de roep om een meer visionaire decaan. Winy Maas: “Natuurlijk moet je kijken wat waardevol is, maar je moet ook kritisch analyseren of alles werkelijk zo goed is. Er zijn capabele professoren, maar het zijn er mijns inziens ook (te) veel. Er is daardoor te weinig visie en power.

We moeten keuzes maken, for better or for worse. Krachtige en goede ideeën moet je ongelooflijk ondersteunen, maar je moet ook selecteren en een positie innemen. Het zou fantastisch zijn als een nieuwe decaan daar eigenzinnige keuzes in maakt." Oud-decaan Wytze Patijn vult aan: “Het belangrijkst is een visie op de ontwikkelingen in het vakgebied. Een decaan moet het vermogen hebben om maatschappelijke processen te begrijpen en de faculteit een richting te geven”. Maar is het mogelijk een uitgesproken visie te combineren met de eerder benoemde vraag om verbinding?

De Ru heeft een helder advies: “De studenten moeten het doen. Het idee om een decaan te hebben die gaat zeggen ‘dit is hoe de architectuur nu zou moeten zijn in Nederland’, dat werkt alleen maar belemmerend. De profilering moet plaatsvinden op de leerstoelen, met uitgesproken hoogleraren.

Een decaan moet genereus zijn, het overzicht behouden, sturen, maar vooral het belang van de studenten niet uit het oog verliezen. Er zijn in het verleden generaties studenten het slachtoffer geworden van persoonlijke opvattingen van een decaan. Dat lijkt me niet de bedoeling.”

3. Ontwerper noch manager Bij het aftreden van een decaan wordt er in de wandelgangen vaak gediscussieerd over de gewenste achtergrond van een opvolger. Zonder nuance wordt regelmatig de tegenstelling ‘ontwerper’ of ‘manager’ aangehaald. In de geschiedenis van de faculteit is een interessante golfbeweging te herkennen, uitgesproken ontwerpers worden afgewisseld door herstructurerende bestuurders. Zo werd Carel Weeber eind jaren '70 afgelost door Hugo Priemus en verving Hans Beunderman eind jaren '90 Cees Dam. Hoewel Priemus en Beunderman waren opgeleid als ontwerper, kregen zij vooral krediet voor hun bestuurlijke kwaliteiten. Weeber en Dam namen meer radicale posities in, met als hoogtepunt het voorstel van Dam om de faculteit af te splitsen van de TU Delft wegens meningsverschillen met het College van Bestuur.

Na een periode van grote bestuurlijke veranderingen, met een accent op de financiële huishouding, is het nu wederom de vraag welke achtergrond de toekomstige decaan moet hebben. Een sterke relatie tot het ontwerpvak is volgens sommigen onontbeerlijk. Job Floris, coördinator architectuur van de Rotterdamse Academie van Bouwkunst: “Een decaan moet het ontwerpvak volledig kunnen doorgronden en dieper in de materie zitten dan enkel ‘inlezen’. Een decaan moet weten wat de ontwerper bezielt en weten waar de markt behoefte aan heeft. Wellicht moet deze functie gedeeld worden met iemand die bestuurlijke ervaring heeft: veel culturele instellingen hebben zowel een creatief als zakelijk directeur.” Rients Dijkstra, ontwerper en Rijksadviseur Infrastructuur en Stad: “Wanneer een manager begrijpt wat ontwerpen inhoudt, heeft dat een enorme meerwaarde. Een ontwerper is iemand die verschillende invalshoeken met elkaar kan combineren, om daar een rijker mengsel van te maken. Het is echter een misverstand dat alle ontwerpers dat kunnen. Er zijn ontwerpers die last hebben van dezelfde nauwe blik die zij hun partners in het proces verwijten.”

Beunderman zet voor de huidige vacature zijn vraagtekens bij de wenselijkheid van een ontwerper; “De tragiek is dat Laglas in een opwaartse lijn van ordenen, koersen en geld binnenhalen zat, iemand dan afserveren als een manager, zoals mijzelf ook overkwam, is kwetsend. Als iemand de rode cijfers moet oplossen, ben je dan een manager? Nee, dan ben je een verantwoordelijke. Het gevaar is dat er nu vanuit een tegenreactie een ontwerper komt. Terwijl een ‘eigen missie’ van de nieuwe decaan in de academische wereld dodelijk is. De decaan is geen eigenaar van een bureau, of directeur van een bedrijf. De studenten en de professionele facultaire gemeenschap vragen 'servant leadership'. Op de faculteit heb je allemaal

verstandige mensen. Als decaan mag je uitdagen, je mag een eigen mening hebben, maar het resultaat moet het resultaat zijn van de gemeenschap.”

4. Actualiteit? Negeer trends!

De aanstelling van een nieuwe decaan zou een moment kunnen zijn om de faculteit laten in te spelen op veelbesproken ontwikkelingen in de maatschappij. De meeste experts trekken de wenselijkheid van het reageren op trends echter sterk in twijfel. Rients Dijkstra: “Ontwerpers hebben er een handje van om te zeggen 'nu, dit jaar, deze maand is het begin van een totaal nieuw tijdperk'. We zijn ontzettend gevoelig voor hypes en nieuws.

Waarom zijn wij zo hysterisch? Alles en iedereen moet zich constant aanpassen, ook het onderwijs: dat veroorzaakt veel onrust en afleiding. Maak een bijzaak van de hysterie. De meeste veranderingen zijn gradueel en voltrekken zich tergend langzaam.” Dijkstra ziet in het volgen van trends zelfs een verklaring voor het gebrek aan draagvlak voor de ontwerper van vandaag.

“In de vaktijdschriften is er een enorme aandacht voor de volgende vormgevingstruc of vondst, daar besteden ontwerpers onevenredig veel aandacht aan. Dat leidt ertoe dat ze hun plek op het podium, de manier waarop ze serieus invloed uit kunnen oefenen op ontwerpen, kwijtraken. Ze zijn met een beeldproduct bezig en kunnen doordat ze daar te veel aandacht voor hebben, niet meer meedoen aan de fundamentele discussies die je zou kunnen hebben als je het over gebouwen hebt. Zo worden ontwerpers door andere specialisten een nieuw specialisme ingedrongen: het specialisme van de hype. Het resultaat is een ontwerper die pas laat in het proces de vraag gesteld krijgt: 'kun je nog binnen dat budget, binnen zoveel tijd, die gevel, die lobby, of die bar, een beetje aantrekkelijk maken?’”

"Hoewel Karin Laglas werd geprezen om haar pogingen tot verbinding, zal het verbrokkelde landschap van disciplines, instituten, leerstoelen en studio's voor de nieuwe decaan wederom een moeilijk te omvatten systeem zijn van autonome koninkrijkjes en moeizame samenwerkingen."

5. Internationale geldingsdrang versus excellente middelmaat In een wereld met grote internationale concurrentie worden aan de TU Delft de woorden excellent en outstandig met hoge regelmaat gebezigd. De wens te verschijnen op internationale rankings, frequent te publiceren in geaccrediteerde journals en spraakmakende prijzen binnen te halen, lijkt iets waar je niet langer omheen kunt als faculteit. Maar is deze dorst naar een internationaal en excellent podium terecht? Dirk Sijmons: “Een van de grootste architectuurfaculteiten van de wereld kan niet zonder een visie op marketing. Bij de marketing horen aansprekende namen.” Wel waarschuwt hij voor onrealistische doelen: “Als je kijkt naar de endowment funds van grote Amerikaanse scholen of de ETH Zürich, waar we ons graag mee vergelijken: daar zitten heel wat nullen tussen. Het is goed om hoge doelstellingen te hebben, maar we moeten oppassen met te hoge ambities, dat werkt demotiverend.”

De reputatie van de faculteit leunt zwaar op zijn hoogleraren uit het verleden en de succesvolle bureaus die zij hebben voorgebracht, de onderzoekstak bleef echter lang achter. Vanwege een gebrek aan publicaties en promovendi heeft de faculteit in de laatste jaren sterk ingezet op onderzoek. Boelhouwer: “Onderzoek op Bouwkunde blijft nog wat achter in vergelijking met de andere TUD faculteiten, vooral wat betreft het aantal gepubliceerde wetenschappelijke artikelen.” De wereld van accreditaties en protocollen speelt hierbij een belangrijke rol. Boelhouwer licht dit toe met een voorbeeld; “Het heet een SEP-protocol, eens in de zes jaar wordt er geëvalueerd op basis van een aantal criteria. Het gaat om wetenschappe-

15 lijke kwaliteit (journal articles, proefschriften) en H-scores (citaten; hoe vaak mensen in artikelen worden gequote), vroeger keken ze ook naar kwantiteit, maar dat hebben ze eruit gehaald. Daarnaast wordt er in de toekomst meer aandacht besteed aan de maatschappelijke relevantie en de impact van het onderzoek. Dat is voor Bouwkunde heel interessant, omdat we ons met veel maatschappelijke problemen bezig houden. Hierop van invloed zijn onder andere de aanwezigheid van hoogleraren en docenten in adviescommissies en media, maar ook bijvoorbeeld tentoonstellingen die de wereld rondreizen.”

Kritische stemmen op de faculteit zijn bang dat deze vraag om ‘meetbaarheid’ ervoor zorgt dat moeilijker te meten waarden in de verdrukking komen. Zij zien de toegenomen onderzoeksambities en de daarbij horende publicatiedrang als een bedreiging voor het (ontwerp)onderwijs. Moeten we toe naar een faculteit die en masse excelleert en publiceert? Dijkstra ziet in deze wens van de faculteit de kans voor een ambitieus milieu zoals hij dat in de jonge jaren van OMA aantrof: “Waar Rem [Koolhaas, red.] de nadruk op legde was: ‘je onderzoek is niet goed genoeg’, ‘je bent niet kritisch genoeg’, ‘je werkt niet hard genoeg’, hij maakte een cultuur die mensen aanzoog die ambitie hadden. Een omgeving die ambitie aantrekt vraagt om de juiste ingrediënten: nieuwsgierigheid stimuleren, veelzijdigheid stimuleren, goed kunnen onderzoeken stimuleren.” Job Floris ziet rond de vraag naar excellentie daarentegen juist een belangrijke rol voor een meer ambachtelijke aanpak. “Laten we vakmensen opleiden, en wel hele goede. Generaties lang zijn ontwerpers gestimuleerd om overal iets extravagants van te maken, dit is te ver doorgeschoten ten koste van basale vaardigheden. Niet iedere ontwerper heeft hier voldoende talent voor, met rampzalige resultaten als gevolg. Je zou wensen dat studenten, naast dat ze zich bekwamen in ‘het bijzondere’, vooral ook begrip ontwikkelen voor het gewone en zich op een ongedwongen manier uiten. Dat moet niet ten koste gaan van nieuwsgierigheid en onderzoek, maar juist als een stevig fundament werken: als goed startpunt voor een eventueel experiment. De grote massa die geen Koolhaas kan worden, wordt zo verbeterd. Niet iedere opgave leent zich voor een nieuw vervreemdend spektakel, dat lijken onze Vlaamse zuiderburen beter te begrijpen. We moeten afleren dat je als architect per definitie altijd uitvindingen moet doen of acrobaat moet zijn.”

6. Architectenopleiding? Een instituut voor academici!

Door de aanwezigheid van meerdere disciplines levert de faculteit verschillende types ingenieurs af. Dat de faculteit alleen architecten opleidt is een veelgemaakte misvatting. Beunderman: “Bouwkunde is geen architectenopleiding, het gaat om academische professionals op een breed vlak, vroeger ingenieur, nu master, met een set competenties waarmee je in een veelheid van werkomgevingen terecht kan. Je leidt academisch denkende mensen op, in de praktijk blijkt dat die heel goed architect kunnen worden.”

De Ru beschouwt dit als onderscheidend voor de TU Delft: “Een goed architectonisch onderzoek heeft altijd een ontwerpende kant. Net zoals een goed ontwerp een onderzoekende kant heeft. Er zit altijd een sterke relatie tussen ontwerp en onderzoek. Dat is bij architectuur van cruciaal belang.

Het is niet louter een theoretische opleiding, de school opereert ook binnen een meer pragmatisch veld. Dat is de grote aantrekkingskracht”.

De combinatie van onderwijs en onderzoek dwong de decaan in het verleden tot moeilijke keuzes. Met de aanwezigheid van meerdere disciplines en verschillende instituten is de balans tussen zelfstandigheid en samenwerking een terugkerend vraagstuk. Het antwoord op dit vraagstuk wordt vaak geformuleerd aan de hand van twee conflicterende modellen.

specialisten opleiden, het andere model betreft een multidisciplinaire benadering. Dijkstra verwoordt het dilemma dat hieruit voortvloeit treffend: “Hoe ga je om met het feit dat wat je zou willen leren, twintig keer groter is dan wat je in de studiejaren, pakweg tussen je 18e en 25e levensjaar, kunt leren? Gaan we dan specifieke vaardigheden trainen, of trainen we generieke vaardigheden die je zelflerend en flexibel maken?” Patijn neigt sterk naar het laatste: “Techniek heeft een zekere autistische kant. Je komt heel gauw in je eigen wereld te zitten. De communicatiekant is heel wezenlijk. Je moet uit je systeem kunnen komen en vanuit zowel de verschillende disciplines als de maatschappijwetenschappen naar een probleem kunnen kijken.

Het leren denken, dat leer je in de praktijk niet meer, dat leer je alleen op school”. Het gaat daarbij niet alleen over het type onderwijs dat de faculteit biedt, maar net zo zeer over het type personeel dat wordt aangetrokken. Het gebrek aan ervaring van gastdocentontwerpers in zowel onderzoek als onderwijs, en nu zelf soms in de praktijk, doet de faculteit volgens Boelhouwer geen goed. Boelhouwer is kritisch over hoogleraren met een ontwerpachtergrond: “De meeste zijn architecten die in het onderwijs zijn gekomen en dan plotseling moeten ze promovendi begeleiden; dat is een ongelukkige combinatie.”

7. De roep om een alleskunner De zoektocht naar een nieuwe decaan voor de faculteit Bouwkunde lijkt in veel opzichten op de zoektocht naar de ideale architect; een homo universalis, een alleskunner die de werelden van wetenschappers en ambachtslieden, generalisten en specialisten, visionairen en conservatieven met elkaar verbindt. Dit artikel moet dan ook niet gezien worden als een lijst aanbevelingen, maar vooral als een verkenning van de spanningsvelden waarbinnen de nieuwe decaan zal moeten opereren. Dit neemt niet weg dat er heldere keuzes moeten worden gemaakt. Bij de aanstelling van Karin Laglas klonk sterk de tijdsgeest van besparingen en efficiëntie door. De zakelijke focus, gericht op de intensivering van externe geldstromen en de verhoging van het studierendement, leek in de vacature de inhoudelijke kant van het decaanschap te overschaduwen.

De behoefte aan kwantificeerbaarheid die sprak uit deze vacature maakte de faculteit in de afgelopen jaren in toenemende mate een bedrijf; de wens naar meetbaarheid zoals we die al kennen uit de onderzoekswereld is nu ook op het onderwijs overgeslagen. Hoewel wij bij het starten van de interviewserie kritiek hadden verwacht op deze ontwikkeling, werd deze als nieuwe realiteit geaccepteerd. Hoewel Karin Laglas werd geprezen om haar pogingen tot verbinding, zal het verbrokkelde landschap van disciplines, instituten, leerstoelen en studio's voor de nieuwe decaan wederom een moeilijk te omvatten systeem zijn van autonome koninkrijkjes en moeizame samenwerkingen. Bovendien zal met de intrek van het OTB de balans tussen onderzoek en onderwijs opnieuw moeten worden gedefinieerd. De centrale vraag lijkt of de noodzakelijke veranderingen in het onderwijs en de belangrijke rol die de decaan daarbij speelt, vragen om een uitgesproken visie of om een meer diplomatieke rol. De meeste geïnterviewden waarschuwen voor een decaan die de problemen te veel benadert vanuit een persoonlijke architectuuropvatting of de urgente actualiteit. In deze opvatting schuilt een grote verantwoordelijkheid voor hoogleraren, docenten en studenten. Zij zullen zich moeten laten horen, zich uitgesproken moeten profileren en de ontwikkelingen in de samenleving kritisch moeten volgen.

Het is aan de decaan om hiervoor het juiste klimaat te scheppen. Een sterke visie op hoe een ideaal Bouwkunde zou moeten functioneren is daarbij noodzakelijk. Alleen op die manier zal hij of zij de representerende en verbindende rol ontstijgen en veranderingen weten door te voeren. We wensen de sollicitatiecommissie veel wijsheid toe en de nieuwe decaan alvast succes met deze moeilijke maar mooie baan.

WHICH CHARACTERISTICS DOES A GOOD DEAN NEED?

Tess and Helene, BSc1 The dean? Is that the boss or something? Well, a dean has to be social, be able to communicate with students. Patience is another characteristic, to possess the ability to listen to everyone.

A dean has to be able to bring people together and create solutions that benefit as many people as possible.

Eric Gebroers, MSc3 I think the next dean has to know what it is like within the profession, not just the bigger picture, but also what it’s like within the practice

Koen Hoofd, MSc Architecture The ability to not only bring together students from the different master tracks, but from within the different disciplines themselves. Connecting students to PhD researchers to professors. This is an important task, maybe not specifically for the dean, but it should be part of the faculty’s policy. Now everyone is stuck in their little corner and there is little interaction. It’s a shame since there is so much knowledge that’s going to waste.

Imane Himmit, BSc5 Our next dean should inspire us and at the same time embody all the things that make our faculty unique. She has to express genuine interest in the students and their work. It would be wonderful if the next dean would be a woman as well. To represent the growing number of women in the technical world.

Carolien van Stelten, BSc6 The dean has to represent our faculty. Our interim dean has, as far as I know, not made a public statement towards the students.

My suggestion to the next dean is to make sure to be more visible.

However, I’m not really sure what it is that a dean does. I assume it has to be with organisation and communication.

Arthur Schoonenburg, FSR The dean has to be comfortable within every facet represented within our faculty, not just architecture. This would require an experienced person who knows how to listen to students.
