W-1 RUN, DUCK, BUT THERE’S NO COVER: A FULL DAY IMMERSION IN CAMPUS CRISIS 8:00AM - 4:30PM Ready. Set. Go! The clock is ticking as the events unfold. How do you respond when your campus undergoes a crisis? Practice your response in real time. The initial notice arrives and every few minutes your phone receives text messages, e-mails and voicemail. Work with your team to get ahead of the deluge and unfolding complications. We start your morning with two hours of seat-of-your-pants crisis. You must process each additional issue with limited resources, knowledge and personnel. Test your cool under fire, your ability to articulate clear leadership stances, media sound-bites, and parental communications. The police drive up with lights ablaze. The TV news cameras pull into your driveway. 500 angry parents want to hear from you “5 minutes ago.” After two hours of frenetic paced, problem-solving, we slow down for you to regroup and reflect. Critique your performance with expert feedback from our session leaders from the perspective of law, policy, compliance, human relations, public relations, social media and in-person media, critical communications, technology options, insurance coverage, security, safety, mental health, medical care, and risk management. We break for lunch. After lunch, garner issue knowledge, legal acumen, insurance know-how, word smith communication skills, and strategies to create interstitial lulls within the storm. We conclude with a reflection on the morning’s hot seat situation to end with long-term denouement and skills built. Katie Koestner, Director, Campus Outreach, PA; Brandon Dawson, Dean of Student Life, Elmira College, NY; Glenn Drew, Chief Operating Officer & General Counsel, American Hebrew Academy, NC; Jack Hardcastle, Director of IT, McDonogh School, MD; Linda Johnson, Esquire, McLane Law Firm, NH; Erik Olson, Dean of Students, Stevenson School, CA; and Jeffrey Olsen, Senior Vice President, Fred C. W-3 ERDMANN @ TABS: LEADING, CHALLENGING, INNOVATING 8:00AM - 12:30PM Independent school enrollment managers face an array of challenges in today’s world, but few are more important than those in their own offices and school communities. Cultivating a positive and productive work environment that promotes collaboration, equity and professional growth will yield significant benefits for all stake-holders. Additionally, engaging and empowering faculty, staff and students, as well as parents and alumni, can produce an admission savvy school culture that will ultimately lead to stronger connections with prospective families. The qualities and approaches of effective leaders play a vital role in driving enrollment and creating compelling atmospheres that support admission efforts. Through group discussions and case studies, attendees will explore important enrollment leadership traits, consider the integration of practical activities and examine management styles as they reflect on the strengths and weaknesses in their own school contexts. Topics include, but may not be limited to: • The power of office retreats • Defining effective skill sets • The benefits of regular office meetings • Integrating informal/casual time • Developing sensitivities to personnel’s other duties/demands • Generational differences/challenges • Dividing workloads • Appropriately challenging & pushing • Leading from behind • Collective decision-making • Faculty and staff involvement • Athletic and extracurricular recruiting Tommy Adams, Assistant Head of School for Enrollment; and Quentin McDowell, Senior Associate Director of Admission & Financial Aid, Mercersburg Academy, PA
W-4 VIDEO PRODUCTION FOR SMALL COMMUNICATION TEAMS 8:00AM - 12:30PM Donors researching non-profits are significantly more likely to make a gift after watching an online video demonstrating the impact of giving according to a recent study by Millward Brown and Google. In another study, video email was found to be 8x more effective than traditional email. The power of video in marketing, admission, and advancement is clear – yet too often video is not used because it is viewed as too expensive or too complicated for a small to medium sized school. This workshop will demystify video marketing for school communications. Topics will include data and industry trends, practical advice, and hands-on training to help you create high quality video in-house. Included in the workshop are complete storyboards for the first five videos every school should create. Hans Mundahl, Founder, Hans Mundahl & Associates, Inc., NH

W-5 “I CAN’T DO THAT…YET”: CULTIVATING A LEARNING DISPOSITION PHILLIPS ACADEMY • ANDOVER MA (Session limited to first 30 registrants)
In the spring of 2014 we launched a project through the Tang Institute at Andover with the goal of better preparing our students for the inevitable challenge of learning both in and out of the classroom. Too often we hear students respond to the inevitable challenge of learning with the statement, “I can’t do that.” Our belief is that a more deliberate focus on cultivating a “learning disposition” in our students will help them to see challenge as an opportunity for growth and development rather than an impenetrable obstacle. In turn, their statement of “I can’t do that” will be replaced with “I can’t do that yet” and thus they will be better prepared for the academic and non-academic challenges of Phillips Academy and life after graduation. Noah Rachlin, Instructor of History, Tang Fellow; Caroline Nolan, Director; Eric Roland, Director of Partnerships, Tang Institute at Andover Phillips Academy, Andover, MA; Accompanied by select Phillips Academy Faculty and Students

FOR HEADS TABS LEADERSHIP FORUM: VALUES–DRIVEN LEADERSHIP Friday, December 4 • 3:15 – 5:00 pm Promoting A Healthy and Safe School Culture Through Values–Driven Leadership Promoting A Healthy and Safe School Culture Through Values–Driven Leadership Educators understand that nothing is more important than promoting the health, safety and welfare of students in a school’s care. This workshop will provide Heads with a practical approach to building a healthy school culture that promotes positive social, emotional and academic development. David focuses on leadership functions, which are distinct from traditional management functions that are designed to ensure legal and regulatory compliance. Affirmatively shaping a school’s culture requires strong and positive leadership. David’s approach focuses on building a culture of excellence and health based on a school’s own values and unique strengths. Participants will learn how to recognize and avoid the dynamics that lead to unhealthy behaviors harmful to students and school communities. Through a scenario- based approach, this participatory workshop will provide attendees the opportunity to learn a framework and shared vocabulary for promoting positive, studentfocused behaviors that are the foundation for a healthy school culture. has 18 years of independent
school experience as a language teacher, advisor, and senior administrator who currently serves as a resource to schools, both domestically and abroad, to create more inclusive school communities. Derrick began his career at Groton as Spanish teacher, dorm head, tennis coach and choral director. In his consultancy work, he has served as a resource to a number of boarding schools including Groton, Hotchkiss, The Hill School, St. Marks, Miss Porters, Ethel Walker, Westover, Kimball Union, The Mountain School, The Webb Schools and Exeter. Derrick has partnered with scores of independent schools in work ranging from facilitating parent meetings/workshops, conducting climate assessments, guiding administrative teams through strategic community planning, presenting workshops to students, training boards on issues of community life, delivering keynotes to regional consortia and providing faculty and staff professional development. Derrick's work was recently featured in the New York Times and subsequently on the Brian Leher show discussing the importance of integrating all identities into diversity discourse. He has also produced two Tedx Talks on the “ Double-Edged Sword of Diversity” and “ The Elephant in the Room,” exploring the challenging and often confusing diversity paradigm in independent schools.

On the one hand, schools look to embrace diversity as an affirmation of their mission and tangible evidence of their rhetoric around fostering inclusive communities. On the other hand, schools simultaneously eschew diversity as it often triggers visceral emotions and perceptions of divisiveness, guilt, and segregation, which are antithetical to fostering cohesive communities. In light of recent national events and shifting American and global demographics, how should boarding schools fashion their community life initiatives to foster authentic 21st century global communities?
