Through the centuries recorded in our contemporary histories, humans have developed maritime systems that are essential in changing the ways we travel to different lands, trade with different communities, and consume our food. More systems have also been developed for us to enjoy, and play on and in, the waters.
Humans and oceans are inextricably linked. Our existence and our development as a species are affected by the dynamism of the waters that surround the lands on which we exist and live. With fast-paced developments in technology, however, comes the greater call for our responsibility in protecting the very waters that are primordial to all living beings.
The global discourse on alternative fuels to ensure environmental and economic sustainability is definitely having an impact on the leisure marine industry. In this bumper edition, we feature the latest conversations on alternative power not only for our leisure boating activities but also for other marine services at the marinas and ports, as discussed during the inaugural ICOMIA Boating Industry Conference in Singapore during April this year. Engine manufacturers are increasingly focusing on diverse sources of power, with Yamaha exploring hydrogen options and Suzuki recently announcing the trial introduction of sustainable marine fuel in the United States. Read more on the decarbonisation movement on page 96.
Amid high-tech developments, we do still have passion for classical boats and even enjoy their simplicity and their historical significance in our modern-day lives. For instance, the Moreton Bay cruiser remains a favourite, offering a modern spin on a classic design. The love for classical wooden boats can be seen through the annual events that celebrate maritime heritage. (page 148)
With more and more options for the leisure boater, we believe it’s the perfect time to consider buying a boat or upgrading to a new one. Whether you are into power boats or sailing boats, the industry is now able to offer products for those who prefer alternatives for powering your boating activities. This edition, spanning from the end of winter to the end of the year, offers valuable information that can assist in your decision-making, and provides connections to trusted boat brands, distributors, service providers and suppliers. Whatever your preference, make sure to involve your family in the decision-making process, ensuring it’s a choice everyone will enjoy.
It cannot be overstated that understanding boating rules and navigation markers is crucial for a safe and enjoyable experience. Learn which side of other vessels to travel on when heading out to sea, or returning to port, and familiarise yourself with cardinal markers to avoid accidents or the embarrassment of running aground.
As you prepare for your boating adventures, we wish you smooth seas and clear skies. Have fun and happy boating!

PANTAENIUS Australia
Pantaenius celebrates 125 years of excellence, a legacy carefully nurtured by Harald Baum and his family, shaping Pantaenius into Europe's premier yacht insurance specialists. Presently, Pantaenius Versicherungsmakler GmbH caters to approximately 5,000 medium-sized enterprises across five strategic locations: Düsseldorf, Eisenach, Kiel, Munich, and its founding city, Hamburg.
Since its inception in 1899 by Johann C. Pantaenius, the Hamburg branch has been synonymous with the ethos of Pantaenius. Originally established as a marine insurance brokerage firm in the Free and Hanseatic City, it evolved under his successor in the 1920s to encompass property and life insurance.
In 1963, Harald Baum joined the company, marking the beginning of a transformative era. Today, his children Daniel, Martin, and Anna steer the company forward. In 1970, Harald assumed leadership, pioneering a groundbreaking hull insurance model for yachts that revolutionised the industry with its innovative approach.
Through ensuing decades, Pantaenius burgeoned, extending its reach to ten strategic locations across Europe and Australia. By the late 1990s, the yacht insurance arm was carved out into a distinct entity from the traditional brokerage operations.
Presently, the Pantaenius Group encompasses not only the yacht insurance division but also
the Marine Claims Service surveyor's office and the yacht management firm Zucker & Partner. Pantaenius Versicherungsmakler GmbH, operational since its founding, remains the cornerstone of this esteemed enterprise.

PRESTIGE YACHTS M48 CATAMARAN
just arrived
By Andrew Bedggood
The Prestige M48 redefines versatility with its unique multihull design, making it an excellent choice for cruising along Australia’s East Coast; this is how you will want to travel.
Powered by two Volvo 320Hp D4 engines with V Drive, the M48 reaches a top speed of approximately 20 knots and cruises comfortably at 15 knots. A 1200L fuel capacity gives a range of about 1000 nautical miles at 8 knots, which allows for a voyage from Sydney to Gold Coast, or from Gold Coast to The Whitsundays without having to refuel!
You won’t need to always rely on marinas when you want to break your journey, because your M48 has all the necessities (including a 600L water tank), and many luxuries, to enable you to live aboard in comfort.
With a draft of only 1.2 m, which is surprising for such a large boat, you will be able to explore and anchor at many of the little bays and coves that take your fancy during your travels.
Just imagine cruising into an idyllic little cove and dropping anchor. Lowering the rear platform, which comfortably supports your Highfield 310 RIB tender with outboard motor, you float it free by retracting the supports, then climb in for a trip to the beautiful sands of a pristine beach.
After exploring the beach, you return and tie up alongside the M48. It’s early afternoon and time to enjoy the crystalclear waters using the tender platform as a swim deck.
Lowering the wide vertical hatch located just forward of the platform reveals a large storage space that you use for lines, fenders, tender gear, and some water toys – which you hand to friends and family splashing in the water.
After the swimmers have finished frolicking, climbed onto the swim deck and towelled dry, they depart for their cabins to shower and change.
When ordering your M48, you were offered the option of either a three-cabin or a four-cabin configuration – all with full ensuites. You are justifiably proud of the three-cabin option you have chosen for your M48. The cabins are located on the lower level, beneath the main deck, and accessed by companionways to port and starboard of the saloon for the two VIP cabins, and forward, next to the very comfortable internal helm station, for the master cabin. All cabins have full ensuites, however the master cabin is amazing, featuring a large bed, large windows and skylights, providing natural light and a spacious feel. It includes a private shower area, a separate toilet compartment, and a workstation with water views.
The port side VIP cabin has the flexibility for either a double or twin bed berth, featuring ample storage, and luxurious fittings in the head and toilet areas. A nearly identical VIP cabin on the starboard side has an ensuite that can be used by day guests without affecting privacy of the cabin occupants.
While your guests have been showering and dressing, you have raised the rear platform to be level with the aft cockpit lounge area. This considerably increases the already large entertainment space which is complete with a small bar fridge and inward facing seating sufficient for a dozen people.
After enjoying some late afternoon refreshments, the breeze starts to pick up, so you suggest that everyone moves into the main deck saloon, which has comfortable sofas and a table, to wait for dinner. Further forward to port is a dining section, with table and chairs, suitable for at least six people and easily converted for lounging
and watching TV. Opposite is a fully equipped state-ofthe-art galley with plenty of bench space, a deep single sink, a full-height fridge, and ample storage – so you can prepare meals or refreshments without ever leaving the conversation. Perfect for entertaining guests.
After a sound sleep and hearty breakfast, you climb the companionway from the main deck to the flybridge, which is a large customisable lounge and dining space with a grill, wet bar and integrated fridge. You seat yourself at the highly sophisticated port-side two-seater main helm, which offers excellent visibility of both transom and bow, and begin manoeuvring out of the cove to continue your adventure. Isn't it easy to fall in love with this yacht?

45 SUN TOP AXOPAR
By Andy Kancachian
When Peter Hrones, Eyachts managing director and exclusive Axopar distributor for Australia, calls a press conference to launch a new boat, the Australian marine media take notice. Having a personal walkthrough of the new 2024 Model 45 ft Axopar Sun Top by Peter is exciting, and his passion for the brand is contagious, contributing to its phenomenal success in Australia.
Peter pointed out some key design features; Axopar has added some really convenient elements such as the foldout midlevel side balconies, which create further seating and widen the social space in the cockpit, making it possible for the entire family and all your friends to be seated around the cockpit dining table.
This boat can carry a whopping 16 passengers comfortably, in style, while allowing plenty of personal space and a variety of social settings for everyone onboard. There are integrated roof racks, great for secure storage of all your on-water toys such as your SUPs, paddle boards, canoes, and even your mountain bikes! They have also included a flush-mounted solar panel allowing the batteries to charge while out on the water. And the feature he was most excited about were strategically positioned canvas zip-up store pockets that could hold valuables, lifejackets, or even wet clothing and towels that will dry off once underway.
Walking us to the bow we noted the forward-facing sun lounge seating and two well-placed sound system speakers, creating an incredibly relaxing space for sunset drinks or even a cruise at high speed.
The unique design allows access to the cabin below via gull wing (think Tesla/Mercedes) doors on the bow deck. Below is a spacious area for resting, comfortably seated in a multi-purpose lounge, which converts into a bed by flipping over a backrest. The high roof allows even a 6.3ft person to walk around freely, and the space includes a full-height internal toilet and shower.
The DNA of this model incorporates all of Axopar’s experience, making the hull ride very smooth, producing comfortable and safe boating at 45 knots through reasonable-sized chop, which is testament to the big deep V hull design. Peter assured us that although this boat was bigger than the super popular 37, the manoeuvring was just as agile and responsive.
The helm features 3 helm chairs and smart steering from the Babus Shadow range - integrating trim table controls, bow thruster, and stereo, all at your fingertips. The
THE ULTIMATE ADVENTURE BOAT
setup for the captain is very ergonomic, with comfortable throttles, and two flush-mounted multifunction screens allowing GPS and chart information, as well as onboard diagnostics such as engine controls, lithium battery monitoring, and the Axopar management system.
As we sat listening, this all-black big and deep V hull with its matching three black 300hp 4.6L Mercury V8 Verados with joystick control, was certainly attracting a lot of attention from the public at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. Carrying 1200 lt of fuel, this boat has a range close to 300 nm.
At the centre of the boat is a nice entertaining space with a wet bar, sink, cooking grill, and two large drawer fridges. There are several other fridges and an esky positioned around the entertaining areas.
The standout difference from previous models is the sheer amount of storage around the boat; every usable space has been converted to some kind of storage - lockers, drawers, and hidden compartments - so you can stow away your gear yet have it easily accessible when required. For those that want sun, there are 2 large remote control
sunroofs, giving the captain and passengers the choice to open up the areas if desired.
There are three rear configuration options on this model; on display was one offering a rear bench and below floor storage, another offers a U-shaped seating dinette that converts to a sunbed, and the aft cabin option with a large glass rear window for kids or friends to sleep in their own private second cabin.
This boat is all style and thinking, with deck wash, reading lights, USB ports, flush speakers and ceiling lights, and of course optional rocket launchers for the fisher folks. Peter explained that the Axopar 37 range was the most popular of its size in the world, and he believes many 37 owners will upgrade, and many new buyers will be attracted to the versatility of the Axopar 45 Sun Top configurations and styling.
This boat creates a really casual place to hang out on the water; it looks cool, performs superbly, and accommodates the most discerning boaties and their passengers.

BOAT BUYING FOR BEGINNERS
By Narayan Pattison
For anyone who is relatively new to boating, getting your head around all the different boat types and options can be a daunting prospect. To help you sail through the process as easily as possible, we have put together this brief and handy selection of buying tips.
PUTTING THE FAMILY FIRST
Heading off to the dealer before you have figured out exactly what you and your family want from the boat will only create headaches later on. Sit down with your family first and discuss who will be using the boat, where it will be going, and what sort of activities are most important to you. The type of boat you will need for two-person fishing trips is very different to one suited for towing water skiers. Once you have decided the boat’s main purpose and the usual number of passengers, then you will be able to find a boat that your family can enjoy for years to come.
FINDING THE RIGHT BOAT TYPE
The humble tinnie is always a good place to start for beginners. They are very light, which makes them easy to handle, economical to run, and simple to transport and store at home.
For those who want to take more people on their boats and be able to tackle rougher waters, you will want to consider larger boat types. Runabouts are good all-rounders because the windscreen provides protection for the family, while still allowing for plenty of room in the back for fishing. Bowriders can be another good option for the family if cruising comfort is a priority. However, there is less room for fishing. And if fishing is your main aim, you may want to consider cabin boats to ensure more shelter from the elements.
SELECTING THE OUTBOARD
As usual, keep in mind your boat size and your main boating activities when choosing your outboard. Also, consider the type of water the boat will frequently be on. An inexperienced boat owner should choose an outboard that is less powerful than those used by experienced drivers.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT DEALER
Now that you have the details sorted, the real fun begins. It is shopping time! As well as seeking out the right boat, you also need to pick a good dealer. Ensure your dealer is an Accredited Boat Dealer and then shop around a few dealers, hitting them with the same set of hard questions. Picking a local dealer is also important so that you can have easy access to support for any issues that crop up down the track.
ON-WATER TEST
For a purchase as important as a new boat, it is critical that you take it for a test drive to see how well its performance suits your needs. Try and take your family or friends who will be using it regularly with you to know how it handles a full crew. And if at all possible, aim to do the test drive on some mildly choppy water rather than calm water.
NEW VS USED
The final choice you need to make is whether to buy new or used. Purchasing a new boat will obviously cost more money, but it will give you the security of a warranty and allow you to pick every detail to ensure it is exactly suited to your needs. On the other hand, used boats will save you money, especially if you are patient enough for the right one to come along. Be wary though, as you may get slugged with unexpected repair costs down the track.
While there are many reliable sources of advice you can refer to when making a decision, it is important to remember that it is you and your family who will use your boat. Ultimately, the boat you purchase should be the boat that meets your expectations and your needs.

MAHI BOATS BUILT AT
GOLD COAST CITY MARINA
The 50-ft MY Pacific Pearl was built at the Gold Coast City Marina in 2023 by the skilled craftsmen and technical experts at Mahi Boats. The owners, Liz and Roy, have recently shared the reasons behind their decision to build their Peter Brady design power cat at GCCM:
WHAT DREW YOU TO MAHI BOATS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF PACIFIC PEARL?
Peter Brady recommended Mahi boats to build the Pacific Pearl. Their reputation for advanced construction techniques was a major factor. They specialise in vacuum bagging, a process that creates a lighter and stronger hull, which was very important to us. Additionally, Dan Williams from Mahi Boats, has extensive experience building both high-performance racing yachts and luxurious cruisers. We were particularly impressed with his commitment to quality craftsmanship and his meticulous attention to detail during the build process.
DID THE IN-HOUSE SUPPORT SYSTEM AT GCCM PLAY A ROLE IN YOUR DECISION?
Absolutely. Building a boat is a complex undertaking, and having all the necessary trades readily available within the GCCM facility was a huge advantage. It streamlined communication and problem-solving throughout the construction process. The access to experienced professionals who could offer technical advice when there are alternative interpretations of the building plan, was invaluable. Classic Marine did an amazing job with the
upholstery and covers. The cabinetry and wood finishes throughout the interior were crafted by Workshop 28 using computer design and intelligent woodworking machines.
WHAT SPECIFIC FEATURES OR CUSTOMISATIONS DID YOU REQUEST DURING THE CONSTRUCTION, DID THEY ENHANCE YOUR SAILING EXPERIENCE?
Safety and comfort were our top priorities. Since we planned on spending a lot of time on the boat, we wanted a space that minimised the risk of falls, particularly as we get older. We specified at the design stage that there would be no flybridge, that stairs should be minimised and that the layout of the saloon should incorporate sufficient hand holds to reduce the risk of falls. This design makes it much easier to navigate the boat, particularly when the sea conditions are less than ideal.
Internal engine room doors enable engine room access in a seaway without having to open deck hatches. Essential maintenance while running can be accomplished without risking a saltwater deluge into the engine room.
Pacific Pearl is not just about accommodation; even though the hull width was increased slightly over the original hull design to provide an increase in displacement and enable greater fuel load for longer range, she can still perform when necessary. On a recent crossing of Bass Strait (about 280miles), she sat at 21kn for around 15 hours to complete the trip almost
in summer daylight hours. Her narrow hulls ensure that she is easily driven with lower horsepower engines than would otherwise have been necessary.
We've encountered everything from calm, glassy waters to choppy waves, and Pacific Pearl has handled it all with grace and stability. It's truly a joy to be onboard.
WHY DO YOU CHOOSE TO HAVE YOUR BOAT MAINTENANCE DONE AT GCCM?
Boats, even new ones, need loving care, and the central location of GCCM on the east coast is convenient for checkups. We will be returning to utilise the same teams that participated in her construction
Regular engine maintenance can be completed with D’Aprix, the on-site Yanmar specialist, without having to brief the technicians on what work needs to be done and leaving the engine rooms so clean and tidy that they set a high standard for other trades.
We have always found that securing a place at GCCM is straight forward. Dockmaster Chloe handles everything by phone and goes to considerable effort to find the right berth at the right price, and at a location convenient for access by the trades to be employed.

THE STAR OF THE SHOW: ISLAND GYPSY 40 WIDEBODY
InlandMonsters Paul Burt
GoldCoastFishing
Spending my life fishing in areas that are often pristine, remote, wild and untouched, it never ceases to amaze me where so-called river monsters turn up.
You could be in the middle of the Pacific Ocean casting lures around untouched bombies with 50-kilogram giant trevally swallowing your foot-long popper to deep dropping a 3-kilogram piece of lead with flashing disco lights and 200-kilogram leader with a bunch of hooks on it to crazy depths in excess of 1000 metres of water for a gargantuan of the deep; yet, close to home virtually in your back yard, crazy catches of monstrous fish turn up.
The Gold Coast has more than 500-kilometres of canal systems, channels winding upstream along old riverbeds eventually ending up either at a weir where the fresh meets the salt or into man made lakes that not only house deep holes to well over 25 meters but also extra large fish.
And it’s not just the Gold Coast that holds this ecosystem but also many other tributaries that has some sort of tidal influence. To name a few species,
Queensland groper weighing more than 150 kilograms, 50 kilogram estuary cod, 30-kilogram giant trevally, metre long barramundi and sharks longer than your average dinghy.
Throughout the day, these fish move silently and mostly go undetected. However, under the cover of darkness, shapes and the backs of fish breaks the still waters as they come to the surface to feed on smaller prey schooling around bridge lights or taking shelter around jetties or other semi submerged structure.
In some cases right in the middle of a metropolitan city, mullet the size of your arm, spray out of the water, as what looks like a car being driven in behind them smashes through the water with a mouth gaping wide open hoping for a catch. This is the giant trevally strike! Once this is visualised in front of your eyes it sends an instant shot of natural adrenalin into your body as you cast a foot-long popper or stick bait out into the whitewash. Most of the time using a live bait will undoubtedly hook you something, but seeing a bow wave behind your lure as you retrieve it back is second to none.
Other ooglies inhabiting the waterways that often take you by surprise, is the Queensland groper, a monstrous fish that can grow as big as a small car and has a mouth bigger than a standard washing machine. These fish often rub themselves along rock walls or even along a cement retaining wall throughout a canal system. You might be thinking 'Why?" well I can’t answer that for you but one thing is certain: if there’s a deep hole in the main river or around a canal entrance, it would be a fair bet to say that a Queensland groper may call it his home. Old areas such as Tumbulgum in the Tweed and even
the deep hole adjacent TSS in the Nerang River is a well known spot where giant gropers frequent. Don’t go thinking you’ll catch one though as they are a protected species and even hooking one will land you into some pretty hot water with the law. But seeing them in the wild is history right there in front of you, as a 2 metre fish that weighs around 100 kilograms or more is most likely more than 100 years old!
The estuary cod is a similar fish found in similar areas. They don’t grow as big but they do have similar features. If you do hook onto an estuary cod, have a look down its throat as you’ll often find a whole crab sitting there just behind its gills, this is another fact that I can’t explain. I’ve caught many all around the tropical parts of Australia and throughout the pacific isles, and yep - most have a crab in their throat.
The barramundi is a tropical sportfish made famous for its aerial displays, muscle-fighting drag-pulling runs, and of course top-eating at the end of the day. These fish inhabit the northern tropical waters
Up close and personal with a Gold Coast bull shark

Landing a bull shark from the canal
of Australia, but now we are finding more and more right here in Southeast Queensland. The quite simple explanation for this is that barramundi fingerlings can be bought at most aquarium shops and people who do buy them take them home and raise them in a fish tank environment for a couple of years. In that time, they receive loads of food and love and of course they grow and they can grow pretty quick. Eventually ‘Barry' the barramundi will outgrow the fishtank and often the owner will let it go into the rivers or canals or creeks. Times this by a hundred or so a year and eventually you have a population
the local waterways. New technology with electronics such as Live View from Garmin allows anglers to find and pinpoint exactly where the fish are, often around bridge pylons, rock bars and structures. Most caught are released by the sportfishing angler and targeted during the warmer months of the year.
Sharks have been an issue for a long time and will continue to be the taxman at the end of the day or should I say at the end of your catch. Bull sharks, or river whalers, are a species that has poor eyesight and relies on the receptors around their nose to hone in onto their prey. A tough fighting trevally during the warmer months of the year thrashing about the surface will often attract the attention of a nearby bully, and within a minute or two you either retrieve half a fish, no fish or the whole thing. Sharks are fun to catch, they add the element of danger due to their razor sharp teeth. Their blistering runs and the sheer size of them as fish to a metre are the norm. A wire trace is a necessity when targeting them. Surprisingly, the best bait to use, if you can’t catch a trevally for some reason, is a piece of dead freshwater eel. Deep holes, main channel with some current and pretty much anywhere where
or fishing a deep hole in a quiet stretch of the tidal lakes. But be aware you are messing with danger, for if you are in the wrong spot at the wrong time when the fish thrashes, it could end pretty badly.
All of our creeks, rivers, tidal lakes and canals house a variety of fish, some bigger than others. Sometimes what lies down below the surface is more than meets the eye.

Australian boat buyers are voting with their wallets when it comes to new luxury pontoon boats in which to cruise our waterways – and a long-established Brisbane company is leading the way.
Runaway Bay Pontoon Boats of Burbank/Rochedale successfully manufactures and sells quality pontoon boats, proving that anything an overseas manufacturer can do an Aussie company can do as well, if not better.
The company proudly and justifiably describes itself as “Australia’s Premier Builder of Basic to Luxury Pontoon Boats”.
HERE TO STAY - Runaway Bay Pontoon Boats attributes the strong demand to their boats’ build quality and easily customisable design, as well as the company’s excellent customer service and reliable local back-up.
The parent company is Highgate Engineers, a division of Holmwood Highgate, a privately owned Australian company, established in 1985, and today they have more than 200 employees. Buyers can have confidence that they will still be here for many years to come, which cannot be said of some companies who import boats from overseas.
Their pontoon boats are built by Australians for Australian conditions and that really shows in the build quality and their toughness. They are also built to Australian standards and even international standards, if required, and designed to be within standard towing width, so there are no issues transporting them.
FIRST-HAND EXPERIENCE - The management knows all too well how important dealer and manufacturer back-up is, because it was after buying an imported pontoon boat that the management came up with the idea of building an Australian-made version because the imported boat in question was designed to cruise in freshwater in the USA and did not take kindly to constant immersion in corrosive salt water here in Australia.
It was difficult to get satisfactory dealer and manufacturer support for the problems that cropped up, and eventually, the dealer shut down. The owner decided to build a pontoon boat himself, using ideas and extensive expertise of the team at Highgate Engineers.
The resulting two prototypes hit the water in 2008 and the rest – as they say – is history. Sales have continued to grow year on year, and their only issue is keeping up with demand, which is a wonderful issue to have.
THE BEST - Company salesperson Craig Winch has been part of the success story since the beginning and his enthusiasm for the craft shines through in his comments.
“We have some pretty special waterways in Australia and our boats are the perfect way to get out there and enjoy them,” Craig said. “Our pontoon boats can be built to survey, and we also offer various lengths and widths including many popular designs between 16 and 28-feet, all trailerable. Customers can choose their own colour scheme and customise their internal fit-out to some extent, so the boat layout truly reflects your personal preferences and usage.
“They are all-day boats, designed for enjoying local waterways with your family and friends, whether that is fishing, water-skiing or wake-boarding, or just sitting back and taking in the world as you leisurely cruise on by. We work with clients to offer them the very best in sports fishing pontoon boats and leisure pontoon boats.”
THE PURSUIT OF PERFECTION - Runaway Bay Pontoon Boats noted that one of the aspects potential buyers appreciated the most was being able to visit the factory and see boats under construction, and observe first-hand Highgate Engineers’ meticulous attention to detail and build quality.
The company prides itself on a policy of continuous product development and improvement, while utilising the highest quality materials and keeping abreast of the latest technologies in the pursuit of perfection at a competitive price. Those are big words and that is an ambitious goal, but it’s what they strive for, and sales results show how well their team are achieving it. In keeping with its underlying commitment of ongoing customer support, the company is also happy to repair and modernise older pontoon boats with new furniture.
The reputation of the company is also reflected in the resale price of the boats, because owners often resell their boats for almost what they paid new, even after years of happy usage.
Want your own dream boat? Call Craig at Runaway Bay Pontoon Boats to discuss your ideas. Prices start at $70,000 for a base boat excluding engines and trailer. Organic Growth vs. Acquisition: What
Navigating Towards Success
The Power of an Acquisition Strategy for Business Growth
Like the dynamic seas of the marine industry, Australian businesses face an ever-present challenge: scaling up to meet the demands of customers, employees and legislation. Growth is not just desired; it’s necessary for survival and prosperity. While many opt for the steady, organic path, weaving through the waves at their own pace, some choose a swifter, more impactful route—business acquisition. This tactic isn’t just about expanding territory; it’s a strategic maneuver that can catapult a company into new waters, bringing about growth at an accelerated pace.
Sets Them Apart?
The traditional voyage of organic growth requires navigating the initial challenges of start-up life before catching the winds of profitability. However, market conditions fluctuate, presenting challenges requiring creativity and often slow solutions.
Conversely, growth through acquisition is akin to power vs sail. It’s a direct route to scaling, offering immediate access to new markets, employees, supply chains, and products or services that would have taken years to develop independently. While the financial investment can be significant initially, the advantages and profits often outweigh the initial outlay, offering a unique blend of opportunities that organic growth simply cannot match.
Why Consider Acquisition as Your Growth Compass?
Acquiring a competitor expands your territory and significantly enhances your position in the marketplace. This strategy is especially potent within niche markets where specialised services can define a company’s success.
Acquisitions allow businesses to quickly fill gaps in their services or product lines. For a manufacturing company, this could mean acquiring a business with advanced marine technology or specialised services, positioning itself as a comprehensive solution for its existing clients.
Combining forces through a strategic merger can unlock efficiencies and performance gains that were previously unattainable. In the context of the marine industry, this could translate into operational efficiencies, shared expertise, and a stronger, more competitive business model.
Gaining and retaining talent has been historically difficult, talent is a crucial driver of innovation and success. An acquisition provides a direct path to integrating a pool of skilled individuals who can propel your business forward.
Instead of spending valuable time and resources building from the ground up, acquisitions offer a fast track to growth. This strategy can be particularly beneficial in the marine sector, where the learning curve for new technologies or markets can be steep and costly.
Is Your Business Ready to Set Sail with Acquisition?
The decision to grow through acquisition should not be taken lightly. It requires thoroughly understanding your current position, strategic objectives, and the broader landscape. Conducting due diligence on potential acquisition targets is essential, ensuring they align with your company’s culture, values, and long-term goals.
As you ponder the direction of your business, consider whether an acquisition could provide the wind in your sails to accelerate growth. By strategically choosing to merge with or acquire a complementary business, you unlock new horizons of opportunity, positioning your company to navigate into profitable growth successfully.
Growth through acquisition is not without its challenges and risks. However, for those businesses eager to expand their reach, enhance their offerings, and secure a competitive edge, it represents a voyage worth undertaking. With careful planning, a keen eye for opportunity, and a steadfast commitment to strategic integration, your business can achieve accelerated growth across Australia and beyond.

WHITTLEY CLUB NATIONAL RALLY at Sanctuary Cove from 17–21March 2025
Whittley Club Queensland is partnering with Sanctuary Cove to host the Whittley Club National Rally 17-25 March, 2025. Whittley boat owners from all over Australia will converge on Sanctuary Cove for the bi-annual National Club Rally. This is a week filled with boating activities in southern Moreton Bay, both on and off the water. Sanctuary Cove is ideally placed to host this event because there are few marinas that can accommodate the anticipated number of boats participating in the rally (50-75).
There is so much to see and do there, so if the weather turns sour, participants will have plenty to do at Sanctuary Cove. There are over 50 retail shops, restaurants, a Tavern and an IGA for re-provisioning. Boats will be docked at the marina, and for those who don’t have a boat, accommodation is also available next door at the Intercontinental Hotel at reasonable rates. Whittley Marine Group will also have boats on display for visitors to Sanctuary Cove to examine closely, with a special event planned to reveal a new model.
Your registration for the Rally includes all Trips, lunches, dinners, entertainment, a welcome bag of goodies, and giveaways, for up to two (2) persons per boat. So, start saving now! Participants will be assigned a team with a trip leader who will guide them to a different location each day on our gorgeous Gold Coast waterways. The trip leaders carry out a prior reconnaissance to ensure maximum comfort and safety of all travellers. All vessels use the same radio channel and are briefed prior to departure. Lunch is provided each day at a different destination. The teams will be pitted against each other with quizzes and activities like the blind dingy race.
Owning a Whittley just does not stop at the door when you hook up your new pride and joy. Whittley owners in each State have their own clubs. Every two years they join to host the Whittley Club National Rally. It is great to catch up with old friends and make new ones. You don’t have to buy a new Whittley to join the club (although if you are buying a new boat Whittley will gift you your first year’s membership). We welcome all Whittley owners, so if you own a second-hand Whittley, come on over!!
Here is a link to our membership form: https://whittleyclubqld.godaddysites.com/membership-form
Our club aims to allow members to meet in a relaxed social atmosphere whilst enjoying our beautiful natural waterways and environment. It provides the opportunity to enrich the joy of boat ownership through forging new friendships, enhancing knowledge of our waterways, participating in club events and exchanging general boating tips and ideas. We have an organised trip at least monthly, generally within Moreton Bay, but do extend our trips to some of the Northern NSW Rivers and as far as the Keppels and the Whitsundays.
Sometimes we combine with other Whittley clubs, like NSW, to have a combined trip, such as the recent one to Lake Macquarie, NSW. Our trips are very casual and usually involve meeting up at a pre-determined anchorage and enjoying "happy hour" on a beach to watch the sun setting. We focus on safety first. We never consciously place members in danger and welcome all boat sizes and styles. If you have a problem or issue with your boat, there is bound to be somebody who can help you solve it. Share in our knowledge base of boat ownership both in person and in the member's area on the Web Site and through our
newsletter, Whitbits. Help find the best boat ramps, safest anchorages and explore new areas.
Travel with other boats to see the best routes, and receive assistance from willing fellow members in all matters boating. Our Facebook Page will give you a bit more of an idea of what we are about, plus we also share some photos from our trips. Also see our web page for more information about the club and the trips and events we have https://whittleyclubqld.godaddysites.com/
The 2025 Rally will be an excellent opportunity to meet like-minded people and to learn more about the Whittley boating experience. The four-day event is a great opportunity to make new friends, share boating ideas, problem solve and enjoy the hospitality that Sanctuary Cove and Whittley owners have to offer. See you there!

Brett: Certainly. The marina underwent a complete transformation in 2020/21, led by GCMarine. We demolished the existing structure and rebuilt it to meet modern standards. We reopened in September 2021 with 76 premium berths that can accommodate vessels ranging from 12 to over 70 metres. This redevelopment has allowed us to host some of the world's finest superyachts and cruisers, earning us titles like Marina of the Year (under 140 boats) and recognition as an International Level 3 Clean Marina and Fish Friendly Gold Anchor Marina. That sounds incredible! What are some of the standout features and amenities at Marina Mirage?
Eva: One of our standout features is La Luna Beach Club, Australia's first floating beach club. It's a luxurious spot where guests can relax on sunbeds, swim in the pool,
and enjoy a variety of cocktails. The menu at La Luna is inspired by Mediterranean flavors and includes fresh seafood, grilled meats, vibrant salads, and options for vegetarians and vegans. We also have live performances by a saxophonist and a DJ, creating a vibrant and inviting atmosphere.
La Luna Beach Club sounds like a must-visit destination. What other facilities do you offer to your guests?
Brett: We offer a range of exceptional facilities, including the Milon Health Club, which is recognised as the best gym on the Gold Coast. It provides yoga and Pilates classes, along with tailored fitness sessions aimed at enhancing strength and flexibility. The gym is conveniently located near the marina, offering guests an exclusive fitness experience. Additionally, we have private bathroom and shower amenities, 24-hour security, and a marine concierge service to cater to all our guests' needs.
It seems like Marina Mirage offers a comprehensive lifestyle experience. How do you cater to long-term visitors?
Eva: Our goal is to provide an all-inclusive lifestyle for both short-term and long-term visitors. Besides our premium berths and state-of-the-art facilities, we have several dining options, including the renowned Omeros Brothers seafood restaurant, Glass Dining and Lounge, and La Luna dining restaurant. We also offer superyacht and mega yacht accommodations, private bathroom and shower amenities, and 24-hour security. Whether you're here for a weekend or a longer stay, we ensure a luxurious and comfortable experience.
For those interested in visiting Marina Mirage, how can they get more information or plan their stay?
Brett: For general inquiries and berthing information, visitors can contact us at (07) 5555 6480 or email marina@marinamirage.com.au Additional details are available on our website at www.marinamirage.com.au/ marina-services. We are located at 74 Seaworld Drive, Main Beach, QLD 4217, and we warmly invite everyone to come and experience the best that the Gold Coast has to offer.

Australian Premiere at the SCIBS has a special meaning to Cheoy Lee Shipyards. It’s a wonderful occasion to reconnect with our business partners and customers in Sanctuary Cove, as well as meet the new generation of yacht enthusiasts."

Pioneering Boat Brand Returns To Sanctuary Cove LUXURY FAMILY YACHT
By Andy Kancachian
CL Yachts, from the Cheoy Lee Shipyards, has a long-standing history on the Gold Coast. As one of the first motor yacht brands to be marketed and sold in the city, the owners were the original investors in the Sanctuary Cove development at Hope Island.
The smallest boat in the new CL Yachts B series, the CLB65, offers a popular size that provides a large volume cruiser, easy to handle for a family. The most impressive feature is the boat's almost 20ft beam. This luxurious yacht is both comfortable and very elegant.
The expedition-style yacht’s main deck living spaces feel much larger than 65ft due to the clever layout, lines, and finishings. The modern design is very comfortable, with hidden features like an electric window that opens up the boat to a cool breeze. The galley located aft is centrally positioned to the dining and entertainment areas and opens onto the aft deck, allowing ample space for people to social or party. There is plenty of refrigeration space, an oven, microwave, dishwasher, and a wellthought-out pantry and storage. The dining table with built-in storage and the coffee table that lifts to become a handy office workstation are impressive features. A bar houses an electric pop-up flatscreen TV. The wrap-around sofa that can seat the
The yacht features three rooms and three heads in a well-thought-out design. The aft stateroom spans the full beam of the boat, featuring unique colour and quality details and fittings. Long windows on either side and unique opening porthole add to the charm. A workstation and vanity offer plenty of space for personal items, along with a built-in safe. The head has outstanding fittings with his and her matching sinks and a large walk-in shower. The below-deck area offers great storage, including a washer and dryer. The other two rooms provide excellent accommodations for kids or friends, with two single beds, and an island double in the bow.
The helm features two multifunction displays and, from the double-wide seat, provides complete visibility around the boat. All engine and communications controls are mounted around the upright steering wheel. With a bow thruster and IPS, this boat is easy to manoeuvre. Electric fin stabilisers ensure a smooth ride, and a CZONE monitoring system oversees tankage, major boat functions, and integrated navigation electronics, all accessible remotely.
A captain's watertight door leads to the starboard side deck, providing quick access to the bow via wide side decks. A sofa and huge sun pad offer passengers an aquatic view with an overhead pop-up sunshade. This area also has significant hidden storage and a well design anchor system.
The flybridge is the ultimate spot for a party in this social zone. Sitting alongside the skipper at the second helm, there is a wraparound lounge and aft a balcony entertainment areas with all the amenities required, including an electric barbecue.
Boarding the boat, the obvious feature is the massive beach club. A hydraulic swim platform, ideal for watersports and tender retrieval, comes complete with hot and cold water washdown, pop-up sunshade holders, storage, and pop-up cleats.
As CL Yachts is an experienced shipbuilder, entering the full head height engine room reveals their expertise in practical design, optimal equipment, and meticulous installation. This area includes a single berth for the crew with their own head and TV. This area also houses the air conditioning system and a 32kw generator, both easily accessible for maintenance. The neat and user-friendly layout makes it a pleasure to check on all electrical systems and batteries. Thoughtful design features include an emergency escape hatch leading off the master bedroom and a ladder up to the aft deck, useful during bad weather. The yacht’s resin-infused composite hull offers a high strength-to-weight ratio, maintaining structural integrity and durability without compromising displacement. Stability is ensured through the expensive boat-building technique of installing all tanks made from fibreglass in the bottom of the hull, and a floating framework system reduces vibrations when underway.
The CLB65 is a cut-down version of the CLB72, offering a huge boat with a beamy hull. The Volvo IPS1050 diesel engines provide a top speed of 27 knots. Adapting stateof-the-art marine technology, CLB65 delivers outstanding performance, strength of build, and a range of 457 nautical miles at 10 knots, allowing you to fulfill your passion for adventure and exploration with ocean passage.

Marina Liability and Compliance OperatinginaMarina
By
Good day, Captain. Let's delve into the critical aspects of marina liability and compliance, particularly for your vessel oper ations in the marinas of Northern Queensland. This guidance aims to ensure your vessel's safety and legal protection.
UNDERSTANDING LIABILITY IN MARINAS - Marina operators are legally obligated to maintain safe and well-kept facilities, necessitating regular inspections and repairs of docks, walkways, and other infrastructure. Neglect in these duties can result in liability for accidents, as specified in the Civil Liability Act 2003 (Qld). For instance, a marina operator can be held liable when a dock collapses due to inadequate maintenance, causing third-party damage or personal injury.
As the skipper, ensuring your vessel's seaworthiness and safe operation within the marina is your responsibility. Incidents like collisions during docking, environmental damage from fuel spills, or improper mooring can incur significant liabilities. The Transport Operations (Marine Pollution) Act 1995 (Qld) mandates strict compliance to prevent marine pollution, imposing severe penalties for violations. For example, a Queensland boater was fined for an oil spill that harmed marine life. Automated spill detection systems can help swiftly manage and report accidental discharges.
Contractors and service providers in marinas must adhere to safety standards to avoid causing damage or accidents, while all visitors and guests must act responsibly. The Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (Qld) enforces these obligations. For example, a contractor's negligence with flammable materials may cause a fire, significantly damaging several vessels.
Ensure all third-party contractors have adequate liability insurance and clear contractual terms outlining safety responsibilities before engaging their services.
MOORING OUTSIDE MARINAS
- When mooring outside marina confines, you must adhere to various legal and environmental obligations, including anchoring restrictions in sensitive ecological zones, such as coral reefs, with strict anchoring rules and heavy fines for violations. Another important consideration is properly discharging waste or pollutants in open waters, as legislated.
Use designated mooring buoys in sensitive areas to protect marine environments. Improper anchoring near the Great Barrier Reef may cause significant coral damage, leading to substantial fines for the vessel owner. Advanced anchoring systems with GPS technology can provide extra security and stability.
QUARANTINE
AND BIOSECURITY - To protect Queensland's marine environment:
Hull Cleaning and Biofouling Management: The Biosecurity Act 2014 (Qld) regulates biofouling, mainly for international or interstate ship movements. Recreational vessels are encouraged to manage biofouling to prevent the spread of invasive species. Ballast Water Management: Ballast water management regulations typically do not apply to recreational vessels. However, compliance is required for those recreational vessels with ballast tanks under the Biosecurity Act 2014 and some other related delegated legislation. Regularly schedule hull inspections and cleanings to ensure compliance and avoid biofouling.
ENVIRONMENTAL ZONES AND PROTECTED AREAS - When navigating protected areas: Great Barrier Reef Marine Park: Obtain necessary permits for activities within the park.
Local Coastal Management Plans: Adhere to restrictions on anchoring and discharges. Queensland has eco-trails designed for boaters to minimise environmental impact while offering scenic coastal views.
ACTION POINTS WHEN AN ACCIDENT OR INCIDENT OCCURS INSIDE THE MARINA
Ensure Safety First: Secure the area to prevent further damage or injury. Provide first aid if necessary and contact emergency services immediately.
Report the Incident: Notify the marina management and relevant authorities as soon as possible. Complete any required incident reports accurately and thoroughly.
Document Everything: Take photos and videos of the scene, including any damage to vessels and infrastructure. Gather contact information and statements from witnesses.
Contact Your Insurer: Inform your insurance provider about the incident and provide all necessary documentation. Follow your insurer's instructions when filing a claim.
Seek Legal Advice: Consult with a maritime lawyer to understand your rights and obligations. Consulting with a maritime lawyer before making official statements ensures you are informed about the legal landscape and can make decisions based on sound legal advice.
Prevent Future Incidents: Review and improve safety measures and protocols to prevent similar incidents. Conduct regular training and drills for crew and staff on emergency response procedures.
Record Drills in Logbooks: Ensure crew and personnel are familiar with and well-drilled in managing emergencies. Record these drills in logbooks to evidence proper understanding and compliance. When an incident occurs, one of the first places investigated is whether there is a record of the crew having been exposed to emergency drills in this area.
Some common considerations include: fire onboard, man overboard, medical emergencies, flooding/water ingress, engine failure, collision/grounding, severe weather conditions, sails or rigging failure, electrical failure, abandon ship scenarios, intrusion by unauthorised individuals, skipper becomes disabled, practical radio operation for non-radioqualified crew. Regular drills and preparedness can significantly mitigate the risks associated with these emergencies.
CONCLUSION - Understanding your obligations and liabilities within marinas is crucial for a skipper. Recognising your responsibilities, maintaining proper insurance, and adhering to safety and environmental regulations can significantly mitigate risks. Whether docking at a bustling marina or mooring in a secluded cove, staying informed and prepared is your best course of action. Pacific Maritime Lawyers are well-placed to advise and act in maritime law matters.
Following these guidelines allows you to navigate Northern Queensland's waters safely and legally. Safe travels!

Sirocco Marine Demand for RIBs runs hot
This year’s Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show was a “pleasant surprise” for Neil Webster, managing director of Sirocco Marine, specialists in Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs) and exhibitor at the show for 20 years.
“We entered the show with no expectations, given the economic uncertainty and high levels of competition in our segment, but we were very happy with the results,” he said, adding that the upper end of the sailing and motor yacht sales drove a lot of sales and leads.
“The top end is still buoyant,” Neil observed. “This drove the sale of the larger, more luxurious and highly-optioned RIBs, including the BRIG Eagle 8 and 10 and the larger Zodiacs, and the 460 Williams Jet Tenders which were likely going to 80 and 100-foot motor yachts.”
The fine weather drew the crowds and Neil reported satisfaction with the quality of boat show visitors this year. “We caught up with customers past and present, and there were visitors from every state at the show. Our Melbourne dealer sold several boats, and we were quite happy across all the brands.”
On display were 30 boats from BRIG, Zodiac and Williams Jet tenders, along with Sirocco-branded RIB tenders.
Slava Rodionov, co-founder and CEO of BRIG, which manufactures in Ukraine, attended SCIBS 2024 with his wife and son, meeting owners and informing them of the brand’s continued production, despite the challenges of manufacturing during war.
Sirocco Marine has been Australian dealer for BRIG since 2006 and received the BRIG International Dealer of the Year Award for five consecutive years.
Slava, a regular visitor to SCIBS and the Sydney International Boat Show since 2008, who then had to cease visiting Australia because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, said it was exhilarating to be back.
During the pandemic, from 2020, Slava said the BRIG management was preparing to put off staff, but their fears were unfounded. “Business was rocketing! We had to triple production to keep up with orders from 2020 to 2022.”
The Russian invasion that began 24 February 2022 impacted the factory’s production, but they are back and more determined to keep delivering BRIG models to international markets. “We are very lucky that we have no problem with parts supply and good relations with suppliers of parts and materials,” continued Slava. “There is a lot of goodwill there. We have a good reputation with all our suppliers.”
Along with BRIG, Zodiac, Williams and Siroccobranded RIBs, Sirocco Marine displayed a neat day boat from the Netherlands, the Sirocco 730i.
The 7.3-metre vessel boasts an inboard diesel engine, offering owners more economical, low maintenance, family-friendly cruising.
Ryan Slater, Director of Sirocco Marine Queensland said the response to the Sirocco 730i attracted a lot of interest and praise for its “traditional looks”. “It’s such a pretty boat, compared to other open day boats. People were also impressed with the new Honda 350 horsepower engine which launched at SCIBS 2024. “Another positive was the line-up of 2024 BRIG models, and seeing Slava back here for the first time in a few years,” Ryan added.
“Sunday was the strongest day for us this year, compared to Thursdays traditionally. Then we had a strong week post-show with deals done and on-water trials. “The Sirocco range of RIB tenders made in Ukraine were popular, with quite a few sales. We’re looking forward to more in Sydney!”
Sirocco Marine will exhibit at the 2024 Sydney International Boat Show in the ICC, 1 to 4 August 2024. siroccomarine.com.au

Rod Twitchin Marine
BUYER'S ADVOCATE PROGRAM Letushelpyoudecide
At Rod Twitchin Marine, we recognise that purchasing a luxury yacht represents a significant investment and a deeply personal aspiration. Our commitment is to guide you through this journey with expertise and dedication, ensuring that the process is not only smooth but also enjoyable.
UNDERSTANDING YOUR NEEDS
Our team of seasoned yacht surveyors stands ready to assist you at every turn. With years of experience in the industry, we possess the knowledge and insight needed to match you with the perfect vessel. From the initial consultation, where we listen attentively to your desires and requirements, to crafting a tailored acquisition strategy, our approach is centred on understanding your vision. Through our comprehensive buyer's advocate program, you are paired with a dedicated consultant who becomes your advocate throughout the entire process. They meticulously search for yachts that align with your specifications, conducting thorough inspections and handling negotiations with brokers and owners on your behalf. This ensures that you receive the best possible value and terms.
SEARCHING FOR THE RIGHT VESSEL
Navigating the complexities of yacht acquisition can be daunting, which is why our consultants provide objective guidance on critical decisions. Whether it’s advising on vessel suitability, managing the negotiation phase, coordinating surveys, or overseeing the global delivery of your yacht, our team manages all aspects to streamline the process.
PROFESSIONAL SURVEYS AND SEA TRIALS
Obtaining professional technical advice is crucial for understanding a boat thoroughly and making an informed purchasing decision. Our survey report provides an unbiased and independent assessment of the vessel. It’s important to rely on the expertise of surveyors and mechanics and heed their recommendations.
Simply viewing a boat at a marina and reviewing its paperwork is insufficient to evaluate its condition. As a buyer, you need to test the boat comprehensively. We will only advise you to purchase the boat after conducting a hull survey, engine inspection, and sea trial, which can reveal issues that only a trained eye might detect.
Our survey reports will help you understand what equipment and systems might require repair or replacement and identify potential upgrades you might need to consider if you decide to buy the boat.
NEW OR USED BOATS
Choosing between a new or used boat is not just a personal preference; each option has its pros and cons. We can guide you through this crucial part of the decisionmaking process. If you decide to purchase a used boat, it’s essential to be diligent with the details. Thorough research and a complete understanding of the boat's history, including history reports and discussions with service agents, are vital.
FINAL DECISIONS
Boat buyers often make common mistakes. It's essential that everyone involved enjoys the boat regularly; otherwise, it will go unused. Skipping an independent check of the vessel can lead to problems, especially if you are new to boating. Additionally, not performing 'ownership' checks to ensure the boat is free from legal claims by third parties can cause significant setbacks.
Choosing the right boat may be the most challenging aspect of the process. With the right information about the boat, you—the buyer—will ultimately decide what to purchase and use. Our services are designed to help you achieve the best possible outcome in buying the vessel you want.
Beyond the purchase, our commitment extends to supporting you in every way possible. We facilitate discussions and manage any necessary refits or improvements post-purchase, ensuring that your yacht meets your expectations in every detail.
WORLD WIDE DELIVERY
What sets us apart is our dedication to serving clients worldwide. Whether you’re seeking a yacht in Europe, the Americas, or beyond, our global network and expertise enable us to deliver unparalleled service and support wherever your dreams take you.

A hint - something to do with the rivets and welds.
Ever noticed how the aluminium structure of an aeroplane is riveted with no rolled aluminium and no welds? As soon as you weld aluminium the molecular structure' of the product weakens by over 50% . Creating a roll in aluminium can only be achieved using low grade aluminium. Rolling imparts immense stress creating weak points and cracks over time. It's a relief to know that airplanes are constructed using high grade aluminium and without the weak points created by welds.
Using the knowledge gained from the aerospace industry, Swiftco aluminium trailers do not use rolled aluminium or welding in the manufacturing of their impressive aluminium trailer range. In fact, Swiftco trailers are designed by a leading (now local) Aerospace Engineer and Finite Element Analysis Consultant for companies such as Boeing, Airbus, Northrop and UTC Aerospace in the United States.
Swiftco use a composite joint design of two 6mm-thick mild steel plates, creating a joint thickness of 12mm, tested and proven superior in design, durability and strength to other aluminium boat trailers which are constructed with lower grade aluminium and welded joints. Swiftco's composite joint has undergone rigorous testing and been found to withstand over 4000kg of load without failing. This means that each Swiftco trailer has an incredible 8000kg capacity, way above the specifications for trailers under the Australian Design Rules. No rolled and welded aluminium trailer could withstand that amount of load.
A local Australian family business, the owner, Marcus Gardner operates the facility enabling you to discuss your towing requirements directly.
"I know I would prefer my prized boat being towed down the highway by a higher grade tougher Swiftco aluminium trailer. Peace of mind and as their motto reads, you can always trust a Swiftco. Also congratulations to Swiftco on their industry leading 6 YEAR frame warranty. That’s longer than my new car warranty!
"I visited Swiftco’s manufacturing complex recently on the Gold Coast and was invited to witness the construction of an impressive 4500kg rated, tri-axle 8-metre SharkCat trailer wi th a DeeMaxx braking system (pictured). Swiftco use aluminium beams which are T6 temper with a strength of 380MPa-
500MPa, creating an impressively strong frame. At the same time, Swiftco's team of talented, qualified professionals were also constructing a 10-metre aluminium boat trailer that was being shipped to PNG and a 6.9-metre for a Medical ship in Indonesia."
Marcus will build your trailer to your design, with bunks (skids) or rollers and even fit your boat professionally to your trailer, ensuring a safe tow while protecting your boat.
As you are dealing direct with the manufacturer whether for a SWIFTCO aluminium or SWIFTCO hot dipped galvanised trailers, these trailers are very affordable as there is no middle man or dealer structure.

THE GOOD VIBES STORY
Bespoke Tours for All Abilities and Disabilities
By Andy Kancachian
Captain Josh Bryce, the skipper and owner of GOOD VIBES has a passion for all-abilities inclusive boating. His custom designed and built vessel is the only vessel of its kind in the Southeast Queensland region. Available for all abilities but specialising in custom boating experiences for those with mobility issues. 100% wheelchair accessible.
"Our tours are customised for each client: times, days and our clients needs. Sightseeing, fishing, sunset cruises, parties - whatever the client wants to do we make it happen. GOOD VIBES is very stable and comfortable with a BBQ, shower, music, toilet and even the kitchen sink."
"We had a young girl in a wheelchair that wanted to come and see the whales. It was a challenge to get her on board and she was limited to where she could sit and view the whales. I carried her out of her chair and brought her up to the viewing deck. Her excitment and joy of seeing the whales where everyone else was had a profound affect on me. It was unforgettable for both her and me".
Inspired by this experience, Josh embarked on his dream of providing a boating experience for people with mobility issues. Over a 2 year period GOOD VIBES was designed and custom built.
"I have ensured 100% wheelchair accessibility in every aspect. With boarding ramps both sides of the vessel and a front drawbridge for beach access," Josh explains. " Safe and easy access for wheelchairs was the main focus."
While domestic commercial vessels aren't mandated to adhere to the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport, there's a growing recognition of the need for disability access in the charter sector. Good Vibes, with its adaptability to handle Queensland's tidal changes, stands at the forefront of making boating experiences inclusive for all.
Josh highlights the role of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in incentivizing investments in such services. "NDIS access has motivated us to provide these essential services for people with disabilities," he remarks.
Inviting all adventure enthusiasts to embark on an unforgettable on-water experience, Josh says, "Whether it's a sightseeing tour, a fishing expedition, or a leisurely sunset cruise with friends, Good Vibes is the vessel for you. Reach out to us, and we'll tailor a tour to suit your needs."

PROPELLING OUR FUTURE
New research reveals unique multi-path approach to decarbonising recreational boating
The buzzword these days for governments and industries is the term “decarbonisation”. It is not a new concept, as it has been used in engineering and chemistry to mean the removal of carbon or material containing carbon from a substance or from an object, such as an engine. However, the reason it is becoming a popular term is in the context of environmental sustainability, where decarbonisation, according to Cambridge Dictionary, means “to stop or reduce carbon gases, especially carbon dioxide, being released into the atmosphere as the result of a process, for example the burning of fossil fuels.”
If you are wondering why we are talking about it here, the answer is simply because the global recreational industry has joined the worldwide campaign to decarbonise. In a research commissioned by the International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) in 2023, entitled Pathways to Propulsion Decarbonisation for the Recreational Marine Industry, the findings show that recreational boats only contribute a tiny amount (less than 0.1%) to global greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, most emissions come from powering homes and industry (46%) and transportation (14%).
Despite being a small contributor, the recreational marine industry has made significant strides in reducing emissions from boat engines (by over 90%) and improving fuel efficiency (by over 40%) in the past 20 years. The industry is committed to continuing its conservation efforts to protect the marine environment and finding ways to do even more. The research, which
specifically looks at marine propulsion in boats under 24m in length, reveals that due to the unique on-water environment for recreational boating, and the varied interests of boaters and the experiences they seek, a variety of solutions must be considered to continue reducing carbon emissions from recreational boats.
“Our love for boating is fundamentally reliant on a healthy and sustainable marine environment, and we must take care of it to ensure the experiences boating provides can be enjoyed for generations to come,” said Darren Vaux, president of ICOMIA. “For the first time, we’ve united the global recreational marine industry around our most comprehensive, peer reviewed research to explore opportunities that could reduce recreational boats’ carbon emissions, giving us the data we need to begin educating policy makers, our stakeholder community, and boaters on the varied decarbonisation solutions unique to our industry. This new research provides guidance on the focus for the innovations we can begin exploring today to create a better boating experience that reduces our environmental footprint.”
UNIQUE DEMANDS FOR REDUCING RECREATIONAL BOATING CARBON EMISSIONS
Recreational boats are considerably different from most other modes of transportation, including automotive (onroad vehicles). Unlike automobiles, which are relied on to get from point A to B, recreational boats are used for leisure and vary significantly in not only how, but how often, they are used (e.g., many gasoline-powered recreational boats are operated an average of 35 to 48 hours per year). The research also looked at the impact on cost of ownership based on propulsion technology, and compared to boats on the water today, increases in cost of ownership ranging from 5% to 250% are expected until alternatives achieve market scale. Due to the diversity of the types of boats in use and the varied experiences sought by boating consumers from fishing to watersports to cruising, the research shows there is no universal “one-size-fits-all” approach to decarbonise recreational boats. As a result, in addition to current internal combustion and fossil fuelpowered boats, the industry must consider a portfolio of technologies, including:
Sustainable liquid marine fuels, such as renewable dropin fuels, are expected to be the most suitable source of energy to decarbonise recreational boats by 2035 – by as much as 90% – without compromising the distance a boat can travel or its performance. Of the approximately 30 million recreational boats in use worldwide, with an average total lifecycle of 40 to 50 years and global annual sales making up approximately 2% of the size of the current market, there is great potential for increased decarbonisation of recreational boats with immediate, widespread adoption of sustainable marine fuels.
Hydrogen is an emerging technology and another potential source for reducing carbon emissions from boats, as long as its production process is optimised. Hydrogen, if produced via electrolysis with zero fossil fuel electricity, can reduce carbon emissions for certain craft categories. Electric propulsion is part of the strategy to decarbonise, however, it is not universally suitable for all types of recreational craft and use cases. Electric-only propulsion may have a higher GHG contribution from raw materials and manufacturing than conventional propulsion systems. Watercraft types with lower utilisation are unlikely to find that battery electric systems yield a reduction in GHG compared to the baseline internal combustion engine. It is important to note that this study considers both battery lifetime in years and recharging cycles as battery performance is expected to degrade over time regardless of utilisation. This could impact watercraft that have a long

lifespan but are not frequently utilised as it may require several battery replacements throughout its lifetime.
Hybrid boats that use both electric and internal combustion engines powered by liquid fuels offer the potential for reducing carbon emissions from boats in certain scenarios—namely boats used for longer periods of time and for greater distances. As a result, hybrid technology provides the most potential for emissions reductions for boats that are used for rentals and other high-use environments.
The key next steps the global recreational marine industry is seeking include:
● The adoption of a technology neutral decarbonisation approach for marine environments.
● An acceleration of the development and distribution of sustainable marine fuels and consumer education campaigns that support the adoption of these new fuels.
KICKER
● Consumer safety and government entities partnering with the recreational marine industry to establish marine electric technology standards and consumer safety protocols.
● An expansion of R&D tax credits and investments to improve electric battery density and hydrogen research that can be applied to the marine environment.
● Continued research to evaluate existing and emerging technologies and how to best apply them to the unique marine environment.
According to Vaux, the industry is very supportive of the latest innovations to create better boating experiences. “Sustainable marine fuels allow boaters to act now while the industry continues innovating and investing in new technologies that push the boundaries of what’s possible. Through this research and a global education campaign, we’re uniting the recreational marine industry around a portfolio
of solutions that creates positive change through multiple pathways and a framework to collectively move our industry forward.”
ICOMIA has launched Propelling Our Future, an international campaign to educate and advance the industry on research-driven technology solutions. You can find the copy of the full research report, as well as the summary, on their website. propellingourfuture.com

WORLD'S FIRST TECHNOLOGY
YAMAHAHydrogen-PoweredOutboard
Yamaha has unveiled the world’s first hydrogenpowered outboard for recreational boats along with a prototype fuel system integrated into a vessel that the company plans to further refine for testing later this year. The effort is part of Yamaha’s strategy to achieve carbon neutrality: deploying multiple technology solutions.
Yamaha joined forces with Roush to develop the fuel system to power the new outboard and collaborated with long-time boat builder partner Regulator Marine to build a boat suitable for testing the prototype outboard. Together, the companies plan to begin testing the protype for viability on the water this year.
“Yamaha is exploring all possibilities to achieve carbon neutrality, and we’ve made commitments for our operations to be carbon neutral by 2035 and our products to become carbon neutral by 2050. That goal within the marine market can only be reached through an approach that leverages multiple solutions. We believe hydrogen is a viable method of achieving these goals,” said Ben Speciale, President, Yamaha U.S. Marine Business Unit. “Yamaha wants to be a leader in this space, and we encourage others in the marine industry to become involved as we look for ways to build infrastructure and new policy around innovations.”
By working with Roush on the fuel system engineering, Yamaha gains the benefit of more than two decades of hydrogen systems integration and research.
“When you look at Roush’s history with hydrogen, it ranges from land speed record vehicles to spacecraft. A lot of that knowledge we’ve acquired over the years
we are now applying directly to this Yamaha project,” said Matt Van Benschoten, Vice President, Advance Engineering, Roush. “We are the fuel systems integrator, responsible for fuel systems designs, all of the specifications development, physical integration, safety system analysis as well as testing and development. Yamaha is trying to determine if hydrogen can successfully be used in this market, and I think we will find out the answer is ‘yes.’”
Regulator Marine built a hull based on the 26XO and modified it to accommodate the hydrogen tanks necessary to power the new outboard. Together, Yamaha, Regulator and Roush displayed the boat hull, fuel system and outboard to demonstrate how hydrogen could work as a possible fuel source in a marine environment. Also, the effort allows engineers to begin the process of determining marine standards for the use of hydrogen in vessels.
“If we don’t look for a new source, we won’t find a new source. Innovation starts by asking questions. It creates a little angst, but at the end of the day good stuff comes out of innovation,” said Joan Maxwell, President, Regulator Marine. “In the future, as we design boats, if this proves what we think it will, it could be very possible that we are designing hulls around these hydrogen fuel tanks.”
“Through our relationship with Regulator Marine, we have the ability to test our prototype in a premium boating environment that reflects Yamaha’s brand position, and we have the ability to lead the way in the development of hydrogen as a fuel source in marine environments,”
continued Speciale. “We’re excited to watch this project develop and look forward to taking the next steps.”
Yamaha announced the hydrogen outboard project last December. Further demonstrating the company’s commitment to a multi-technology approach to carbon neutrality, Yamaha recently announced it acquired all shares of electric outboard company Torqeedo.® In addition, Yamaha continues to promote the use of sustainable fuels within internal combustion outboard engines as another alternative.

RAND 27 ELECTRIC BOWRIDER
By Andrew Bedggood
The all-electric, Danish-designed, RAND 27 bowrider provides an alternative for purchasers who are in the market for a dayboat and, at the same time, wanting an eco-friendly option with a focus on sustainability.
At a length of 8.44 m and a 2.59 m beam, the RAND 27 can comfortably seat up to 12 people and, with a draft of 0.35 m, can visit many lovely sandy beaches.
There is a choice of inboard electric motor/battery combinations: the 170 kW E-drive with a 78 kWh lithium battery bank, or the 265 kW E-drive with 117.5 kWh lithium battery bank from EPTechnologies (Denmark).
With the less powerful option, RAND calculates the top speed to be 30 knots, and that the cruising range (at 8 knots) would be around 64 km. The more powerful of these combinations is estimated to have a top speed of 40 knots and a cruising range (at 8 knots) of about 94 km.
Naturally, the actual range (as with any boat) will depend on a variety of factors including the gross weight of the boat, cleanliness of the hull, condition of the propellers, weather and sea conditions, the speed of travel and, with electric motors, battery capacity and efficiency.
From the Gold Coast, a slow meandering trip to, say, the beaches of South Stradbroke Island, of around 20-30 nm, a couple of hours exploring, sunbathing, swimming, etc followed by a quick trip back to base should be well within the capabilities of the electric motor and its lithium batteries.
With most dayboat journeys being less than about 40 km, skippers of the RAND Supreme 27 should have the confidence that a fully charged battery will be more than sufficient for their needs. Speaking of which, these boats do not come with solar panels for recharging the batteries, however connecting to shore power overnight should give full charge by morning.
By now, the environmental benefits of electric boats are well known – no fumes to trouble passengers, no greenhouse gas emissions, no fuel leaks to harm marine life, and no noise to bother other boat users or make conversation onboard difficult. Owners can enjoy cruising on pristine lakes, winding through urban canals, or just exploring neighbouring beaches and coves with a clear conscience.
Not to mention pre-empting future government policies making the operation of petrol/diesel engine vessels more expensive, less desirable, and even restricted in some areas.
Continual development in electric motor technology is producing motors with comparable performance to traditional petrol/diesel motors, and impressive acceleration. There is no need to wait for the motor to warm up and engage the gears, just flick a switch and move the throttle.
Although relatively expensive initially, electric motors also have fewer maintenance issues than traditional motors with their plugs, filters, fluids and seals – and increasingly more costly fuel – and are becoming a more cost-effective alternative.
Of course, factors such as reliability need to be considered – Will the batteries take the boat there and back? Can I recharge? Will the motor perform when needed? and so on. Although with just one
moving part the reliability of electric motors could argua bly be far superior.
If a motor were to break down, electric or otherwise, there would be little choice but to drop anchor and call for assistance. Some petrol/diesel boats might carry spare fuel, however new generation electric boats have a ‘reserve limit’ which restricts the boat speed to optimum for distance so there should be plenty to get back to base, even if the boat is limited to ‘limp home’ speeds. Far better to take the precaution of ensuring your batteries are fully charged before leaving home, monitoring them throughout the day, and enjoying your day.
Key findings revealed a high market readiness for hybrid-electric systems, with 72% of attendees expressing a high likelihood of choosing such a system for their next boat purchase.

TGREENLINE 39 HYBRID ELECTRIC/DIESEL HYBRID FOR MODERN BOATERS
By Andrew Bedggood
39
This hybrid has a diesel engine (Volvo Penta D3 220 hp), in line with an electric motor and gearbox, turning the propellor shaft. The electric motor is connected to a sophisticated energy management system (EMS) which controls the flow of electricity throughout the boat.
When the diesel engine turns the propellor shaft it also turns the electric motor, causing it to generate electricity. The EMS channels the electricity, and that from the four rooftop solar panels, to recharge an array of lithium polymer batteries. When the diesel engine is shut down, and disengaged from the electric motor, the EMS directs electricity from the batteries to the electric motor to propel the boat. The change from diesel to electric propulsion is done at the helm station. After throttling down and stopping the diesel, the ‘hybrid’ switch is simply turned from ‘diesel’ to ‘electric’.
Under electric power the Greenline 39 can travel at 5-6 knots for about 20 nautical miles – running silently, except for the swish as you cruise through the water. This is ideal for navigating residential canals and marinas quietly and without diesel fumes. Cruising under diesel power at 7 knots, a range of about 700 nm is possible.
With the EMS channelling electricity from the batteries to an inverter that powers the onboard appliances, you are always comfortable while cruising, and
there is no need for marina power when moored. Depending on conditions, a small family could enjoy a couple of days at anchor without having to run the diesel for power.
The lithium batteries’ charge needs to be monitored, however, and for efficiency, should be kept between 25% and 75% of capacity, so that they can easily be fast charged by the diesel engine if required.
From a practical perspective, every detail of this boat has been considered - from the electric winchcontrolled tail gate aft, which extends the deck for swimming and sunbaking and closes for security when not in use, to the sunpad forward of the windscreen on the bow, where you can fully stretch out, while enjoying protection from too much sun with an integrated bimini.
The engine in the 39 has been shifted forward, enabling the space below the aft deck to be used for storage of water toys, fenders and other equipment that is best kept outside the living compartment.
Designed as a ‘galley back’ configuration, and with a hatch that can be raised to link the galley with the aft lounge area, you can prepare food and refreshments while socialising. The galley includes a full-size refrigerator, induction cooktop and a convenient wet bar.
The walkarounds are asymmetrical, with the port walkway being narrower, creating additional space inside the living area, whereas the covered starboard walkway is wider for making your way to the bow.
Surrounded by large windows, the living areas are filled with light which accentuates the internal timber accents throughout the vessel.
At the helm station, a sliding door allows access to the starboard deck for easy docking, two electrically operated sunroofs can be opened to allow fresh air to flow through the entire space. The console has twin Simrad displays, bow and stern thruster controls, throttles for the engine and, of course, the electric/diesel switch and battery monitoring displays. The energy management system is accessed by a hatch under the helm station.
There is a generous master cabin forward with twin beds which can be separated as a V-berth or joined as a queen bed. The cabin has excellent storage and an abundance of natural light through horizontal upper deck level windows high up on three sides and another lower down on both port and starboard flanks offering water views. Additionally, there is a quite compact guest cabin with similar bedding options. The master has internal access to the ensuite which has a basin with vanity cabinet and mirror, toilet, and enclosed shower. These facilities are shared with the guest cabin.

VALUE OF A QUALITY SURVEY
AUSTRALASIAN INSTITUTE OF MARINE SURVEYORS
So you’ve found your dream boat and have made the smart choice to engage a marine surveyor before you commit to the purchase. You’ve taken a great step towards protecting your investment, but where do you start in your search for the right marine surveyor in an unregulated industry?
The good news is you’re not alone in your journey. The Australasian Institute of Marine Surveyors (AIMS) has a membership of over 400 surveyors with varying degrees of experience and qualifications. We take the professionalism of our surveyors seriously and our members adhere to a strict Code of Professional Conduct and ongoing yearly Continuing Professional Development. Our transparency helps consumers make an informed choice in their surveyor.
When making contact with a marine surveyor, take the time to ask a few questions. Do you know what type of survey you need? A pre-purchase and insurance survey are not one and the same. An insurance survey is primarily for the needs of insurance companies and is often a tick box report outlining the features of the vessel. It provides little information or peace of mind for the boat purchaser on the quality or condition of the vessel.
A pre-purchase survey is much more detailed and reports not only on the features of the vessel but also the condition including any evident recent repairs or future maintenance requirements. A pre-purchase survey will cost you more, but its value is worth every cent.
Don’t be afraid to ask the qualifications and experience of your surveyor. What is their professional background that led them to marine surveying? Have they undertaken any marine surveying specific qualifications, such as a Diploma of Marine Surveying? Do they have the expertise to provide a mechanical report as part of their survey? Do they have prior experience on boats such as yours specifically? A quality surveyor will usually advertise their expertise and can answer questions to confirm their suitability for your survey.
Is your surveyor covered by Professional Indemnity Insurance? Ask for evidence of their insurance coverage before you begin, you want to make sure all bases are covered in the event things don’t go as planned.
Ask your surveyor for a Terms of Engagement if they don’t provide one. This document outlines the specifics of the survey type and report to be provided as well as survey costs and payment terms. It is critical in clarifying exactly what you are getting for your money and in the undesirable event that things don’t go as planned, can form a legal agreement to fall back on. If your surveyor does not provide a Terms of Engagement agreement, you can download one from the AIMS website free of charge. Insist on getting your terms in writing before you begin. Armed with all this knowledge, you can confidently undertake the task of selecting your surveyor and getting the right survey for your needs. There is no better way to proceed on the adventure of boat ownership than with peace of mind for the safety of your asset and all those onboard.
The Australasian Institute of Marine Surveyors believes in the value of a quality survey and consumers can turn to us and our surveyors to assist you well on your way. If you are not sure if your surveyor is a member you can search the AIMS database at www.aimsurveyors.com.au or give us a call on 02 6232 6555.
GETTING READY TO BUY A BOAT? THESE 5 TIPS SHOULD HELP
1. Make sure that your boat (and trailer if required) has a survey before you buy and ensure that you, as the buyer, appoint the surveyor of your choice. That way you can be sure that the surveyor is working for you and no one else.
2. Give the surveyor all the reasons why you want to buy a boat, what you are intending to use it for and where you intend to use it. Prepare a list of all of the things you want the surveyor to take special note of.
3. Make sure that lifesaving equipment and a beacon are on your list.
4. An owner might tell you that they have already had a survey done and offer you the report, but that report was commissioned by them and should not be passed on. They are unlikely to give you a report that highlights repairs needed and you can’t assume that a report hasn’t been altered.
5. If you are going through brokers and they are adamant about you using a particular surveyor, walk away.
Avoid that sinking feeling. Pick the right marine surveyor.
The wrong surveyor could cost you more than a new boat.

TSURTEES WORKMATE PRO IS BUILT TO FISH
he Surtees hull is renowned for its incredibly smooth ride, the deep V and the genius water ballast idea from Neil Surtees, which makes the hull not just stable, but also has the option to lock in the water so when you get into the chop it will give the hull more weight for an even smoother ride in the rough. The formula is perfect, so why change it?
The Surtees Team decided to give the Workmate Cabin a new look though – we made it more modern, and we added more protection against the weather. You can take a Surtees out in rough weather, so we might as well offer you more comfort to do so. With a 420mm extension the cabin increased by 820L in volume allowing the crew not just a smooth, but also an even drier ride. The new Workmate cabin also comes with added internal grab rails for additional security for the passenger. For taller anglers, there is still the option to increase the roof height by 100mm.
The newly designed dash area allows for sounders up to 12inch, has USB and USBC charging ports, drink bottle storage for the driver as well as brand new laser etched, blue LED backlit rocker switches to make the operation of your options and extras not just easier, but also even cooler looking! We also added a storage pocket for your phone, sunglasses or car keys.
Moving further forward in the cabin, the already large hatch has had an upgrade and is now even bigger to allow for easy access to trolling motors up the bow. This is especially helpful for people with the manual option. The roof rail now reaches all the way around the roof, perfect to tie off unused gear such as dive bags or camping equipment. The ample rocket launcher still allows storage for 7 rods and the anchor light sits in the middle.
The optional shade extension will come with the new design as well to offer 600mm of more weather protection on either those hot summer days or when it starts to drizzle. A very well thought through design to meet customer feedback and the current market.
It’s always exciting to come up with updates and modify your boats over time! Meeting the market requirements and most importantly listening to your customers is key. If they are happy, you will have brand ambassadors for life. We are proud of the relationship we’ve got with our Surtees Tribe and the feedback they have continued to provide us over the years, so we are sure that the improvements and updates we do on the brand are what our customers and keen fishos need for a great day on the water.

Since 1999, Propspeed has been at the forefront of protecting running gear and underwater metals with its industry-leading foul-release coatings. It has been tried and tested around the world, consistently delivering boat owners the same result - improved boat performance, lower fuel burn and operational costs, sustained value of their investment, all while keeping the vessel’s running gear operating and looking its best season after season.
Propspeed offers a comprehensive range of premium foul-release coatings, including Propspeed for underwater metals, Foulfree™ for transducers, and Lightspeed™ for underwater lights. The latest addition to their product line is Stripspeed™, a solvent-based paint stripper for all underwater metals.
What is a foul-release coating? While both antifouling and foul-release coatings prevent marine growth from colonising on underwater surfaces—how they do it differs greatly. Antifouling paints use a biocide or toxin as their active ingredient and come in a range of hardness, from very hard antifouls, which steadily leach biocides from their porous surface, leaving behind a depleted film, to soft ablatives formulated to erode and slowly release biocides over time.
Propspeed is biocide free, meaning that instead of killing marine growth with toxins and contributing to further environmental impacts, it creates a smooth, hydrophobic surface that prevents marine growth from attaching to your underwater assets. Any marine growth that does form is easily wiped away or falls off from water flow across the surface through propeller or vessel movement.
This smooth, hydrophobic surface increases vessel efficiency from the day it is applied, and delivers boat owners sustained vessel performance and reduced maintenance throughout the season.
PROPSPEED VERSUS NO PROPSPEED.
Propspeed’s commitment to achieving data-driven results and improving vessel performance is evident in their thirdparty data validation report conducted with TechBinder and Padmos. TechBinder collaborated with Padmos to evaluate the impact of Propspeed’s foul-release coating on the vessel “Windroos.” The test, carried out after the vessel’s hull and running gear was freshly cleaned, was conducted by having the vessel navigate a set course twice: once without Propspeed coating on the propeller, and once with Propspeed applied to the propeller.
“The data that we gathered suggest a clear improvement in performance of the vessel with Propspeed from the day it was applied,” said Ing. Maurits van Maaren, Naval Architect, Padmos. “Between the two trips, Windroos saw a 7.5% reduction in fuel consumption and a 4.7% decrease in kilowatt usage at cruising speed after the application of Propspeed compared with a clean propeller. Impressed by these results, we’re now implementing Propspeed on all of our vessels and recommending it to our customers.”
In addition to enhancing vessel performance, reduction of operational cost and associated emissions, Propspeed can also help in protecting underwater metals from corrosion and can reduce the environmental impacts of anode fallout.
Underwater corrosion on a vessel is a result of the movement of ions from a solid (like a propeller) to a liquid solution (like the ocean). Considering that some of the most expensive and critical components of a vessel like shafts, rudders, props, pod drives and other underwater metals are constantly under attack from corrosion, it makes sense to ensure the best protection available.
An insulating coating paired with a good cathodic protection system is very effective at preventing severe corrosion on all sorts of vessels and Propspeed is an excellent insulator. Not only does it protect these vital parts from corrosion, but the coating also reduces the load on anode systems and prevents accelerated anode burn that results in the carcinogenic makeup of the anode leaching into the ocean.
In collaboration with Marine Protection Systems, Propspeed aims to raise awareness and promote best practices using its insulative foul-release coatings alongside Marine Protection Systems' expertise in cathodic protection and corrosion protection solutions. This partnership strives to reduce the costs of boat ownership and operation while minimising the environmental impact of corrosion and coating loss on our oceans.
Over the last 25 years, Propspeed has built a skilled, globally trained applicator network and established distribution channels in over 60 countries. Their experienced international sales and technical team is dedicated to delivering confidence, value, and performance to boat owners worldwide. By choosing Propspeed, you are investing in a solution that not only protects your valuable underwater assets but also supports in minimising the environmental impact.

IFISHTV has become one of Australia’s most popular lifestyle programs and has received multiple Logie Award nominations.
These nominations were in the category of "Most Popular Lifestyle Program" & "Most Popular Presenter", the first time in TV Week Logie Award history that a fishing program has received such recognition.
Join Paul Worsteling, his wife Cristy, and their son, Jet Reef, as they travel Australia and the world sharing beautiful locations, fishing and of course, the amazing people they meet along the way.
Paul explains: "Our philosophy is simple: fishing, family, and fun, and that is what we aim to deliver, in every single episode.
"Battery reliability is something I pride myself on. It is a crucial element for having fun on the water and most importantly, staying safe. I always buy the best marine battery I can get my hands on, and for

me that’s a Supercharge. To get the best out of my batteries, I have installed trickle chargers on all of my boats. When they are not on the water in use, they are staying as healthy and fully charged as possible.
"I also check their voltage regularly and try to keep them above 12 volts at all times. The lifespan of your battery will be severely affected if it remains at 12 volts or less for extended periods of time. Install a good quality battery switch and turn it to the off position as soon as you are ready to store your vessel. My Extreme Game king runs a separate crank battery for each 250 hp Suzuki and two-house batteries that run sounders, electric reels, fridges, lights and other accessories."

Singapore has always been an Asian hub for international commerce and travel. It is a familiar stop for people from the Oceania region, such as Australia and New Zealand, when traveling to Asia, Europe and beyond. It is also a food haven with hawker centres, food courts and international restaurants at every corner of the city. While it is also known for its expertise in land reclamation developments, such as Sentosa Island, it is not wellknown as a recreational boating hub. So it was out of our curiosity (and our need to reconnect with Asia) that we decided to visit their annual marine event, the Singapore Yachting Festival (SYF), which also hosted the inaugural ICOMIA (International Council of Marine Industry Associations) Boating Industry Conference 2024 in April held in Sentosa Cove Singapore.
The conference showcased the work of ICOMIA to connect the recreational boating industry in Asia. With the key themes of sustainable business practices for long-term growth and guidance for decarbonisation in the recreational marine industry, the presenters and panelists from Asia provided overviews of their initiatives and programs that promote these key themes. Like most boating enthusiasts, the businesses affirm the need to use new technologies to ensure that boating remains an enjoyable experience without contributing to carbon emissions. While decarbonisation is the vision, harnessing the strengths of all available technologies is something that proves to be most effective in providing the desired power and at the same time ensuring environmental sustainability. There is a consensus that sustainability should be
multifaceted and pragmatic, incorporating not only environmental and social factors but also financial and economic considerations.
Interestingly, the World Wild Fund for Nature (WWF) presentation showed that many countries in Southeast Asia are part of the coral triangle, which also includes Papua New Guinea and northern parts of Australia. The coral triangle is the global epicentre of marine biodiversity, and is under threat from increasing pressures that include unsustainable fishing practices, land-based sources of marine pollution, coastal habitat conversion and climate change (source: CTI). The boating sector has a role to play in addressing these threats. Indeed, as affirmed by many of the presenters, the love for boating will definitely be enhanced if we are also able to protect and preserve the environment in which we enjoy this activity.
In Asia, recreational boating remains an “elitist” activity; it is perceived as only for the super rich. Even while Southeast Asian countries have extensive coastlines and abound with waterways, seafaring life is still culturally embedded in fishing, tourism, transport and cargo. One of the
challenges for the recreational boating sector then is to create a bridge between traditional seafaring and contemporary leisure boating experiences. There is obviously a need for the global boating sector to conduct more research on the cultural barriers that impact the growth of recreational boating in the region.
One way of educating the local people on the lifestyle is holding events that are easily accessible to the general public. This is where the Singapore Yachting Festival may play a significant role. Held at ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove in April, the SYF 2024 boasted an impressive showcase of the yachting industry. The SYF highlighted Singapore’s emergence as a prominent yachting hub, boasting expertise, accessibility, and top-notch infrastructure capable of hosting unique on-water exhibitions. The vessels on display ranged from alternative fuel solutions and electric hydro-foiling craft. We were able to enjoy hands-on experiences in the clean waters of the marina with Seabob. We also had an adventure ride with RHIB Rides Singapore to see some of the islands on the Singapore Strait, providing a glimpse of what Singapore islands have to offer to the boater.

The boat show was held in Sentosa Cove, an integrated residential-marina resort development on the eastern coas t of Sentosa Island, to the south of mainland Singapore. It is largely a residential estate, featuring Singapore's first gated residential community. The land that Sentosa Cove sits on consists partly of reclaimed land and partly of what used to be an isle called Buran Darat, that was situated east of Sentosa. The marina at One°15 has 272 wet berths including 32 for mega-yachts, making it the first in Singapore that can accommodate large
Chinese maritime culture. Utilising high-quality materials like rosewood for its construction, the vessel has remarkable stability, wind resistance, and ocean-going capabilities. A symbol of the enduring cultural exchange along the maritime silk road, Fu Ning aims to retrace Admiral Cheng Ho’s historic voyages, honouring his legacy, promoting traditional Chinese maritime culture, and facilitating cultural exchange with countries along its journey. Admiral Cheng Ho was selected by the emperor to be commander in chief of what became a series of missions to the “Western Oceans.” He first set sail in 1405 to Southeast Asia and the coasts of India and Sri Lanka. His other voyages brought his fleet to the coasts of Arabia and Egypt, the east coast of Africa, the Persian Gulf, and the Red Sea. While these expeditions did not lead to the establishment of trading empires, in their wake, Chinese emigration increased, resulting in Chinese colonisation in
Southeast Asia and the accompanying tributary trade, which lasted until the 19th century.
While the SYF primarily showcased the modern-day recreational vessels, the presence of a traditional merchant ship gave a sense of place, and a glimpse at the maritime history in the region. It was a reminder of the Chinese maritime presence in Southeast Asia and how it has influenced the shaping of the culture and traditions of peoples in the region through their exceptional seafaring technology and skills.
Overall, our experiences in Singapore were exciting and relatively new. While Sentosa Cove has similar amenities and infrastructure as our local integrated developments, and the Singapore Yachting smaller scale SCIBS, the Asian (Singaporean) touch is still manifest and the warm

WOMEN MARINE SURVEYORS MAKING WAVES IN A
MALE-DOMINATED
INDUSTRY
Interview with Pania Smogavec
Pania Smogavec joined the marine services company ADEC Kedge as a marine surveyor in early 2024, servicing the broader Queensland and Northern New South Wales areas. According to a government study, females make up only 2% of the workforce of Marine Surveyors. This is 47 percentage points below the all-jobs average of 49%.*
We spoke to Pania about her experience in the field.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND AND CAREER JOURNEY?
I’m accredited with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) for vessels under 35m and a member of the Australian Institute of Marine Surveyors (AIMS). During my 20 years working on super yachts, I frequently observed the professional and respectful treatment of marine surveyors when they came aboard. I thought to myself, “How do I get a job like that?” Upon returning to Australia as a sole parent, I sought opportunities for further education to ensure a better life for my daughter and me. During this search, I discovered the AIMS Diploma of Marine Surveying. I completed the course and attended an AIMS conference in Hobart where I secured a position with a future employer for whom I worked in Queensland for 5 years.
WHAT SPA RKED YOUR PASSION FOR THE MARITIME INDUSTRY?
My passion was sparked when I stumbled into the industry in Canada. I went from cleaning boats for a charter sailing company to working as a stewardess on a superyacht. After travelling the coastlines of Canada, the USA and the Mediterranean, how could you not love the ocean and want to continue working around it? I have worked in many shipyards around the world refitting different vessels. You learn a lot pulling parts apart while out of the water. I was always interested in how things worked.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST IN THIS PROFESSION?
What I like most about being a marine surveyor is the constant unpredictability and change. Each day is a new adventure, much like the ocean itself.
WHAT IS YOUR EXPERIENCE WORKING AS A FEMALE IN A TRADITIONALLY MALE-DOMINATED INDUSTRY?
My experience has been overwhelmingly positive. As a mariner who has travelled the seas on different yachts, I often found myself in situations where trust in the captain and crew was paramount. I had some amazing mentors and learned a lot. Determined to build upon what I had learned, I pursued a career as a marine surveyor, demonstrating that dedication and passion can transcend traditional gender roles.
HOW CAN THE QLD MARITIME INDUSTRY BENEFIT FROM FEMALE MARINE SURVEYORS?
Diversity in the workforce introduces fresh perspectives, fosters innovation, and enhances decision-making processes. By investing in and promoting women within the industry, companies can uplift their operations and contribute positively to the broader community. Many people are unaware of this profession and its viability, even for women balancing careers and family responsibilities. Encouraging and supporting women in these roles can lead to a more robust and inclusive maritime sector.
CAN YOU SHARE ANY MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES FROM YOUR CAREER?
It has been very rewarding to be a part of the process of a vessel being built from start to finish, and then seeing it operate successfully on the water. Additionally, I found great satisfaction in hearing from a captain whose fishing vessel I had surveyed. Initially sceptical about the new AMSA regulations, he later expressed gratitude as these safety measures ultimately proved to be lifesaving.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A YOUNG WOMAN CONSIDERING A CAREER IN MARINE SURVEYING?
If you want to further your career in the maritime industry, becoming a marine surveyor is another way to continue. You will play a critical role in ensuring maritime safety and compliance, making it a vital, respected, and fulfilling profession. You will need an eye for detail and an understanding of the NSCV.
WHY WERE YOU DRAWN TO ADEC KEDGE?
Becoming a marine surveyor at ADEC Kedge was an exciting new opportunity in my career journey. With the right education, practical experience, and a supportive network, you can excel in this field. It can have its challenges, but the rewards and personal satisfaction you gain will make it worthwhile.
I am also thrilled about how ADEC Kedge embraces new technologies and innovations, especially in the decarbonisation field. It will allow the maritime sector to become more efficient, safe and environmentally friendly, creating a better connection between people, ships and ports.

HARKEN ZIRCON HIGH-EFFICIENCY BLOCKS
Harken announces the addition of Zircon highefficiency blocks to the product line. They are the most efficient small boat blocks Harken has ever made. The best trimmers can feel speed in their sheets. They feel acceleration first, before the apparent wind increases. Before the instruments confirm, they are the first to know when the pressure gets softer. And they respond, matching sail shapes to new conditions immediately. Better sail shape is often the difference between winning and not.
The core of the new Zircon blocks is industrial ceramic ball bearings mounted inside caged races. The cages keep these bearings separated so they do not bunch, touch, and stop each other. The result is a very free-running block with less energy lost to friction than in even our current Carbo blocks. Give an unloaded Zircon block a strong spin, and it spins an incredibly long time. Ceramic is a more familiar name for the metallic oxide Zirconia. Zircon bearings are more than 700% stronger in compression than stainless bearings of the same size. So, they will not deform if used within the recommended load limits. More importantly, they do not absorb as much energy before starting to roll. This becomes evident when you need to ease a sail in very light air. Zircon feels like you can push the line out. At top wind range, you can rig more mainsheet purchase so you can physically trim harder—but still ease through those additional sheaves when the wind lightens up.
Zircon blocks should not be considered an all-purpose option. They are more efficient than any other small boat block, but they are more expensive too. Here is how we see it:
1. SAILING IS COMPETITIVE. If we do not offer this level of performance, someone else might.
2. SAILORS KNOW BEST. If they try them and find value, they will become converts. The opposite is also true.
Zircon blocks are available in single and double blocks, with or without beckets, and in 40 mm and 57 mm sheaves.

The Ultimate Aluminium Hybrid Catamaran STRADBROKE YACHTS' DELOS EXPLORER 53
By Andy Kancachian
The Delos Explorer 53 is an exceptional aluminium catamaran, uniquely designed for global exploration. Currently under construction at Redland City Marina, this vessel is being custom-built for the renowned YouTube sailors Brian and Kaz of Sailing SV Delos. With a rich history spanning over 15 years of ocean sailing and documenting their adventures, Brian and Kaz have navigated more than 85,000 nautical miles. Their extensive experience and lessons learned at sea have profoundly influenced the creation of Delos 2.0, an aluminium expeditionary catamaran designed to offer unparalleled safety, comfort, and performance for long-term cruising.
CHOOSING THE IDEAL CATAMARAN
Recognising the advantages a catamaran offers, parti cularly in terms of stability and space, Brian and Kaz decided it would be the ideal choice for their family life at sea, especially for their young daughter Sierra. Their search for the perfect builder led them to Stradbroke Yachts, situated at Redlands City Marina and led by master boat builder Dan Schofield. The De Villiers (NZ)designed Stradbroke 53 perfectly matched their vision, featuring robust aluminium construction suited for high-latitude sailing, an internal helm for safe navigation, and sleek, m odern design elements.
A chance encounter on Facebook connected Brian and Kaz with Dan Schofield, and this initial interaction quickly blossomed into a collaborative partnership. Determined to ensure the quality of their new home on the water, Brian, Kaz, and Sierra travelled to meet Dan and his team, inspect previous builds, and meticulously discuss their plans. Over several weeks, the two families bonded, sharing meals and conversations that forged a strong friendship. This relationship solidified Brian and Kaz’s decision to have Stradbroke Yachts build their new vessel.
CRAFTSMANSHIP AND INNOVATION
Stradbroke Yachts is renowned for its commitment to high-quality, hand-crafted boats, using the expertise of skilled craftsmen. Delos 2.0 exemplifies this dedication, blending modern design with the durability and strength of aluminium construction. Key design features include an internal helm, which provides a safe and protected navigation space, and substantial bridge deck clearance, which enhances both performance and comfort. The robust aluminium construction is particularly suited for the challenging conditions of high-latitude sailing, offering the necessary strength and durability.
Safety is a paramount consideration in the design of the Delos Explorer 53. The vessel is equipped with collision and watertight bulkheads, creating multiple compartments that enhance security. Advanced technological features further enhance the safety and efficiency of the vessel. The propulsion system is particularly notable, featuring a Parallel Electric Hybrid drive. One hull houses a Nanni N4.80 diesel engine paired with a 25KW electric motor, while the other hull is purely electric with another 25KW electric motor. This configuration allows for various power modes, including pure electric, hybrid, and diesel, providing flexibility and efficiency. Additionally, both electric motors have the capability to regenerate power while sailing, and a unique mechanical clutch allows the diesel engine to function as a large DC generator when the vessel is anchored.
Sailing SV Delos
Kaz, Brian, and Sierra
Practical design choices have been integrated into Delos 2.0 to enhance functionality and ease of use. Unlike the traditional sail-drive and spade rudder combination found on most production catamarans, this design incorporates a shaft-driven propeller and rudder skeg. This configuration protects the running gear from damage caused by debris or groundings and allows the vessel to be beached without concern.
The boat also features an integrated rainwater catchment system built into the extended roof, reducing reliance on external water sources. Forward integrated lounge seats provide comfortable relaxation spaces with panoramic views.
A BLUEWATER VESSEL FOR GLOBAL EXPLORATION
The Delos 2.0 is designed to be the ultimate cruising platform, combining efficiency, comfort, and practicality. The forward sailing cockpit centralises control lines, making short-handed sailing manageable and freeing up the aft lounge area for relaxation. The protected helm, located within the cabin, ensures the skipper remains warm and dry, and with the family, in adverse weather conditions while providing excellent ventilation through the forward door. This design surpasses ISO CE Class A standards, featuring 6mm hull plates below the waterline for added protection, a fully insulated hull for comfort in various climates, and an outdoor galley with an aft lounge deck, promoting an open-air living experience.
Expected to be completed in 2025, the Delos 2.0 represents the culmination of Brian and Kaz's extensive sailing experience and insights. They plan to document the building process on their YouTube channel, sharing the journey and the craftsmanship involved with their audience. This new adventure in Queensland is set to be an exciting chapter in their sailing career.

Like, Whalleys Gutter, and turn east into Tiger Mullet Channel to fish around Green Bank along the huts on Crusoe Island, or turn west and anchor along Kangaroo Island. These are both great all-weather deep anchorages.
For a less popular route, go west at the Brisbane turn and venture up to Calypso Bay and into Harrigan’s Pub for a meal, or just walk up to the shops at Jacobs Well, or into Horizon Shores for a café stop and supplies.
Using a chart, you can find Perry’s Hole, a great all-weather fishing overnight spot or the eastern tip of Short Island (formerly Rat Island) where the north cardinal is, to catch a feed of tailor off the yellow buoy on the east tip off Crusoe island. If the breeze is up, you can spend the winter nights in Mosquito Creek, now called Cobby Passage, fishing and crabbing the rocks on the bends of Cobby Cobby Island. And more familiar is the Slipping Sands and the huts that
for exercise. Karragarra Island has lots of all-weather anchorages with three islands to explore even to just get an ice cream and, while the ferries can get a bit annoying, they can be useful for visitors to join your trip.
PEEL ISLAND – Anchoring at Horseshoe Bay is always a favourite—but not in a southerly. It can be crowded on a weekend, but mid-week, you can take the dinghy over southwest rocks. There are corals, clear water, good fishing, and also along the spit from the old jetty out to the reef half way to Cleveland Point. If the breeze is from the west, fish from The Bluff to Douglas Light.
NORTH STRADBROKE ISLAND – It’s interesting to go ashore at One Mile Beach in Dunwich and walk up through the cemetery. It is always moving and educational to see what our forefathers went through and a chance to remember them. Then you walk up to visit the bakery and take back some fresh supplies. You can also get a decent cup of coffee there and grab some of the local produce
shops you need and lots of restaurants. If you’re staying west, anchor around Green Island, St Helena Island or Mud Island. You can even go into Manly for more shops and restaurants before heading west up the Brisbane River where there is much to see. Otherwise, head north from Peel Island, fish the Hope Banks or the Chain Banks and the Harry Atkinson artificial reef on your way to the sand hills.
MORETON ISLAND – If you are adventurous, you can take your yacht into the Blue Hole or take the dinghy through Frazer’s Gutter to Mays for a cold beer and oysters at Kooringal. If you still have time and no westerly due, spend a few days at the big Sand Hills or go north to Shark Spit. (Note: You can swim there, so don’t believe the name!) On to Lucinda Bay, south of Tangalooma roads, you do not get the wash from the ships that can roll into Tangalooma. Spending the night behind the popular wrecks is often crowded. But anywhere along Tangalooma Resort is great for a day stop. You should allow a minimum of 1-2 hours back across the Bay if the
All these options are less than forty miles from the Gold hese places in a runabout from the coast in a day trip. But most cruiser owners could spend a month getting north to the Bay. There are so many rivers and islands to explore. Take your time and try a new spot to test for yourself. Grab your chart, work out which way the tide and wind will be heading, and find a new sunset to watch. Use your boat for its purpose, to explore, and truly enjoy our own backyard -

MORETON BAY CLASSIC MARITIM E HERITAGE
The Moreton Bay Classic took place off Manly with enthusiastic classic timber cruiser owners from near and far participating. There was a large fleet of 95 classic cruisers, accompanied by other support and spectator boats. This year’s success was attributed to the efforts of many volunteers and local organisers. Many boats hailed from the Moreton Bay area and featured native timber, adding a local touch that thrilled enthusiasts. Each year, the event breathes life into the bay, evoking scenes from a bygone era with its classic timber vessels.
Taking advantage of the beautiful winter conditions on Moreton Bay, the fleet followed a course around Green Island and then around the eastern end of Peel Island, eventually anchoring in Horseshoe Bay. Owners and friends gathered on the beach for a delightful BBQ and live entertainment.
BRIBIE ISLAND CLASSIC BOAT REGATTA
The event organisers aim to foster a love for timber boats among the younger generation, as many of these beautiful vessels are currently owned by older enthusiasts. With the tremendous success and enthusiasm generated by this year’s event, the Moreton Bay Classic has firmly established itself as a cherished annual celebration of maritime heritage and boating camaraderie.
Those interested can stay updated with the latest developments by following the Moreton Bay Classic on Facebook.
The 2024 Bribie Island Classic Boat Regatta marked its 25th anniversary with a spectacular celebration, featuring 88 beautifully registered classic boats. The event showcased a vibrant array of small boats, big boats, and wooden cruisers, creating a captivating sight. The atmosphere was filled with joy, laughter, and lively discussions as boat enthusiasts gathered to share their passion.
Cruising along the picturesque Pumicestone Passage, the regatta evoked nostalgic memories of a rich maritime recreational past. Bribie Island and the Pumicestone Passage were highlighted like never before, making the event a standout in Moreton Bay’s calendar.
The highlight of the regatta, the Grand Parade on Sunday morning, drew vast crowds lining the foreshores. The boats gathered at Sylvan Beach Esplanade created a magnificent spectacle, complemented by classic cars, model boat displays, pop-up stalls, and live entertainment, offering an immersive experience for all attendees. Ian Harby, with his boat "Biddy Maude," won the Best Motor Boat trophy.

COMMUNITY CELEBRATION
Lagoon's 40th Anniversary at Tangalooma
Owning a Lagoon Catamaran means more than just possessing a remarkable vessel; it signifies being part of an extraordinary community. This spirit of camaraderie was on full display when 20 Lagoon Catamarans gathered at Tangalooma, Moreton Island, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Lagoon Catamarans. The event, part of the Lagoon World Escapade, highlighted the deep connections and shared experiences that define the Lagoon community.
LAGOON WORLD ESCAPADE: A GLOBAL CELEBRATION
The Lagoon World Escapade, a global event with 25 celebrations around the world, marked a significant milestone for Lagoon Catamarans. In Australia, the event, hosted by TMG Yachts, the Australian dealer for Lagoon, saw the largest gathering ever with 20 boats and 62 enthusiastic participants. The stunning Tangalooma Island off the Brisbane coast provided the perfect backdrop for this milestone celebration.
THE HIGHLIGHTS: COMMUNITY AND CONNECTION
The first evening brought everyone together for sundowners on the resort’s highest balcony, offering breathtaking views of the fleet of Lagoon Catamarans. This was followed by a delightful banquet and a lively trivia session, fostering connections among the participants.
The second day saw the Lagoon Catamarans forming a picturesque circle before hoisting sails for a rally. The sight of the Lagoons sailing grac efully in perfect
breeze conditions was a testament to their beauty and performance. Onshore, participants enjoyed a delicious lunch and engaging beach games, rounding off the day with a sparkler send-off.
MORE THAN JUST A BOAT: THE LAGOON COMMUNITY
Owning a Lagoon Catamaran opens the door to a welcoming community of like-minded individuals. It’s about joining a network of fellow enthusiasts who share a passion for the sea and adventure. Whether at annual events like the Lagoon World Escapade or during individual journeys, the connections formed among Lagoon owners enrich both on-water and onland experiences.
VOICES FROM THE LAGOON COMMUNITY
Here are some reflections from Lagoon owners who participated in the event:
"Meeting new people has been amazing. I just love the sailing life."
"It's an awesome group of people."
"The camaraderie, the people, and the shared experiences are what make this community special."
"We’re learning about our boat, excited about sailing, and have met lovely people."
WELCOME TO THE LAGOON FAMILY
This gathering at Tangalooma was not just a celebration of Lagoon’s 40th Anniversary; it was a testament to the strength and warmth of the Lagoon community. For those considering joining this family, owning a Lagoon Catamaran means being part of a network that celebrates life on the water and values shared experiences.
From all of us at Boat Gold Coast, we extend our congratulations to Lagoon Catamarans on their 40th anniversary and commend TMG Yachts for hosting such a remarkable event. This is community. This is Lagoon.

AIRLIE SUMMIT
Thegatewaytoaboatingparadise
At the doorstep of The Whitsundays, with its 74 islands and over 280 kilometres of cerulean blue waters, Airlie Beach is a boater's paradise. Each day unveils a new aquatic adventure, making it a haven for enthusiasts.
Greg Alder, an avid boatie and managing director of Queensland construction and development company Alder, recognises the unique draw of this seaside town. His company is developing 24 hectares of breathtaking land at Airlie Summit, the highest remaining zoned land and the last major subdivision site in Airlie Beach.
"Airlie Summit epitomises luxury living. For those with a passion for the sea, it’s a stone's throw from numerous marinas, boat ramps, and the ferry terminal," says Greg.
"Residents enjoy access to an aquatic wonderland of tranquil deep waters. If you love boating, fishing and exploring nature, there is no better place to call home."
Greg and the Airlie Summit team have identified the 10 best places to visit by boat in the Whitsundays, each with unique attractions like beaches, hiking, snorkeling, and swimming. Here are three of the top spots from the list showcasing the vastly different experiences on offer in this piece of paradise:
WHITEHAVEN BEACH - A long beach on the north-east side of Whitsunday Island is celebrated for its impossibly white sand and gently lapping turquoise waters. Voted the world’s top eco-friendly beach, its sand, composed of 98% pure white silica, glitters like snow and remains cool even on the hottest days.
It’s an unforgettable spot for swimming, with plenty of hiking opportunities. You can anchor anywhere along the stretch and plenty of day trips are available by water or helicopter if you don’t have your own boat.
For snorkelling, a short boat ride from Whitehaven takes you to CHALKIES BEACH, on the western coast of Haslewood Island – a reef treasure trove with coral, tropical fish, and sea turtles. Both destinations can be explored in a single day.
NORTHERN END OF HOOK ISLAND - A hidden gem for interacting with friendly fish is the Northern end of Hook Island, only 14 nautical miles from Airlie Beach. Its serene reef environment and rich biodiversity make it an ideal destination for seasoned divers and those seeking a tranquil swim. Moor in any one of the bays and then you’re only a short tender ride from all the fantastic spots. Head to Mantaray Bay to swim with yellowtail fusiliers, giant trevally and Maori wrasse or explore huge bombies and covered plate coral at Pinnacle Bay.
Top off a superb day by taking a quick ride to Stonehaven on the Western side of Hook Island for more snorkelling, a magnificent sunset and the best spot for protected anchorage.
BAUER BAY, SOUTH MOLLE ISLAND - When you’re ready to leave the water and step into lush tropical bushland, moor at Bauer Bay on the eastern side on South Molle Island, which is 6.5 nautical miles from Airlie Beach. The island’s hiking and mountain bike trails wind through verdant forests, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding Whitsundays and the Coral Sea. Don’t miss the hike up to Spion Kop, acclaimed as Queensland's Top Island Walk by National Geographic, which starts from Bauer Bay. Or meander 2.2km on the return walk to Paddle Bay, where at low tide you can traverse the sandy beach across to Mid Molle Island.
"Living at Airlie Summit means you can head out on your boat any time of the year and immerse yourself in nature's splendour," says Greg.
"During the winter months, whales come up to have their calves. You can see them breaching from your balcony or out on your boat. Imagine cruising between two islands and suddenly encountering these majestic creatures frolicking around your boat. It’s awe-inspiring.”
And the best part? “When the sun sets and the boat is moored, you get to retreat back to your extraordinary home in the sky at Airlie Summit," says Greg.

2024 Noosa Gaff Regatta Light Winds Highlight Superior Design
This year’s regatta delivered an on-water spectacular with a picture-perfect backdrop.
The 2024 Noosa Gaff Rig Regatta was held on t he 8th and 9th of June in perfect Noosa winter weather, with air and water temperatures both at 23 degrees.
The Saturday morning briefing, held at 12:00, was clear and concise, providing local knowledge, course, and buoy information. A fallback plan was discussed in case of changes in wind direction and strength.
The regatta prizes, including a range of excellent Ronstan products and Bundaberg Rum Barrels, were prominently displayed.
RACE HIGHLIGHTS
At the start line for Saturday's first race, there were 20 Gaff or similarly rigged yachts. These ranged from a 50-plus-year-old 10-foot timber boat to a recently refurbished Couta Boat. The fleet included classic Gaff and similar rigged wooden dinghies, trailable wooden and glass Gaff yachts, as well as modern Carbon Gaff rigged Cygnet 20’s trailer sailers. Additionally, classic Gunter rigged dinghies, Herons, and Mirrors participated.
Four Cygnets were present, ensuring no one missed out on the action-packed festivities. To maintain competitive handicapping, there were two divisions: Division 1 for boats over 18 ft LOA and Division 2 for open boats under 18 ft LOA.
The conditions were challenging on both Saturday and Sunday, with medium to very light westerlies to southwesterlies and a strong run-out tide. Despite this, the sailing committee managed to conduct two races each day.
Saturday’s sailing faced mild breezes of up to 5 knots, with gusts reaching 7 knots. The Cygnet 20s demonstrated their ability to navigate these conditions effectively.
By David Bradburn
DAY 2 HIGHLIGHTS
Day 2 saw even lighter winds than the first day, making it a real challenge to sail one loop against the tide. All Cygnets finished the course, while a few others did not manage, showcasing the Cygnets' superior sailing capabilities. It was a great weekend, and thanks go out to all participants and the Noosa Yacht & Rowing Club for organizing the event.
Every Cygnet made its mark on the racecourse. Cygnet (Boat1) won, Bacchus took second place, Steve’s Dreamkumtrue secured third, and newcomer Delfyn from Gold Coast finished fourth, showing constant improvement.
LOOKING AHEAD
Next year's Noosa Yacht and Rowing Gaff Rig Regatta will be held on the 7th and 8th of June, 2025. The event is growing each year, and expectations for 2025 include more Gaff Rigged or similar yachts participating in class prizes and overall competition. The inclusion of further Historic Gaff Rigged skiffs and classic dinghy classes is highly anticipated.
The event showcased the Cygnets’ pedigree, stealing the limelight with a commanding performance in light winds. www.bluewatercruisingyachts.com

Queensland Artist’s Splendour
SALTY KISS
In the tranquil embrace of Airlie Beach, where the whispers of the Whitsundays dance on the breeze, Kester Howard, embarked on a journey that intertwined her love for the waters with a passion for art. Born into a family adorned with creative souls—musicians, artists, and woodcarvers— she found solace and inspiration in sketching from a tender age, guided by the artistic legacy passed down through generations.
Under her father's discerning gaze, her artistic endeavours blossomed, nurtured by private art lessons that commenced when she was merely seven years old. From the delicate strokes of charcoal to the vibrant hues of Sennelier pastels, Kester’s journey unfolded. At age 10, she fell in love with a palette knife and oil painting on canvas, and her father had ideas of her becoming an art teacher. However, fate had other plans in store.
As the tides of destiny would have it, her father, a pioneer and a man of many firsts, owned and operated a successful venture in Airlie Beach for over a quarter of a century. He was the first entrepreneur to introduce diving and sn or keling tours in the area, igniting a passion for the ocean within his daughter from a young age. Among his
fleet, the iconic vessels "Whitsunday Diver" and "Reef Jet" stood as beacons of adventure, ferrying eager explorers to Bait Reef, picking up tourists from Hayman and Hamilton Island to show them the wonders beneath the waves.
It was on those very waters that she found inspiration for one of her most cherished watercolour pieces — Salty Kiss
Salty Kiss, painted on Gallery Quality Watercolour paper A2-sized paper, captures the essence of a quintessential day at sea. In this vibrant scene, a yacht is gracefully anchored on the azure waters, adorned with a man fishing with a hand line at the bow. Another figure, equipped with flippers and snorkel, sits poised at the back, ready to plunge into the depths below. An oversized bird, perched atop an esky, gazes intently into the water, perhaps contemplating its own aquatic adventure. And amidst it all, a school of fish, trailed by a shark the choreography of the ocean.
As the years unfolded, Kester’s journey led her to Sarina, a coastal haven where the allure of the sea beckoned in every ripple. Here, amidst a community
where boat licenses outnumbered residents, her business Extreme Marine flourished under her stewardship, evolving into a formidable force within the industry. Engines, boats, every piece of chandlery, bait, fishing gear you could wish for—not the easiest business to stocktake. Her children were raised in the marine business. Saturday lunchtime would come and the boat was hooked up and ready to go out on the water.
Yet, amidst the ebb and flow of business, her passion for art remained steadfast. With brush in hand, she painted not just canvases but narratives of resilience and compassion. From the tranquil waters of Mackay Marina to the vibrant gallery in Brisbane, Kester’s creations echoed the symphony of her soul, inviting all who beheld them to embark on a journey of discovery.
But beyond the strokes of her brush lay a deeper purpose—a commitment to raise awareness for WillisEkbom Disease, a cause close to her heart. Through tireless advocacy and the profits from her ventures, she endeavoured to shed light on this affliction, offering hope to those grappling with its shadows. More children suffer from this degenerative disease than epilepsy, in all, 12 percent of the population.
For Kester, the canvas of life stretches far beyond the boundaries of a studio—it is an ever-unfolding tapestry, woven with the threads of passion, perseverance, and boundless creativity. And as she continues to navigate its depths, one thing remains certain—the sea, with all its mysteries and majesty, will forever be her muse.
