Nautical Training
COUPLES TRAIN TO DOCK BOAT IN LOCAL CONDITIONS
By Roselle Tenefrancia
Knowing your vessel well, and how to operate it in various conditions, is very important in boating, regardless of how long you have held your licence for. Updating your boating skills is the key to safe boating. Mastering the operation of your boat, particularly when docking in challenging conditions will ensure a better experience for your time on water. Andy and Jenny Graham own a SeaRay 320DA Sundancer sportscruiser with twin 6.2 ltr Mercruisers and sterndrives. They signed up with Nautical Training & Marine Services to improve their skills in berthing their boat in challenging circumstances.
“We are relatively new to boating and we were experiencing difficulty berthing at Ephraim Island Marina, we are often affected by strong tidal influence and blow off conditions,” explained Andy. Karla Herbert-Evans, Boatsafe Training Provider and owner of Nautical Training & Marine Services provided extensive training which included: close-quarter manoeuvring, knots, lines and hitches, use of spring lines and docking approach and departure. The training was conducted at Ephraim Island Marina, where Andy and Jenny would normally be docking their boat. Although the couple had initially encountered difficulties in understanding how the boat responded to the conditions and also how to manage the boat, after being taught a few new manoeuvres on their approach, they were able to overcome previous difficulties. “We were given excellent instructions. Then we practised controlling the boat using just the gear shift controls and throttle levers. We gained confidence in reversing the boat into the berth with the current tidal and wind conditions,“ Andy explained. “The training was excellent and just what we needed. Karla is a great instructor, backed by a wealth of knowledge and experience. She explained everything clearly and her pleasant and patient manner made it easy to stay focused and take it all in.” Similar to Andy and Jenny’s concerns with berthing, Michael and Alison McAviney wanted to become proficient and confident with docking their vessel. They were also keen to improve their GPS knowledge and received training on Broadwater navigation vessel handling, knots, lines and hitches and docking. Michael and Alison own a Sea Ray 355 Sundancer, also with separate gear shift and throttle controls. Training was conducted from their dock at Park Cova Marina, Hope Island. Michael and Alison experienced the challenges of increasing wind gusts during blow off dock approach but were able to overcome them during the training. “We were able to better understand how to use the twin screw gears for the docking approach. We have become more confident using the separate gear shifts and throttle controls. While learning the sequence of docking approaches, we had our dock lines correctly measured and set up so we could quickly attach a springline and use the gears to hold the boat until the other lines could be safely secured. We learned to anticipate the wind and tidal effects on our vessel during close quarter manoeuvres and overcame the difficulty in docking the boat in high winds,” they explained. They appreciated Karla’s professionalism and her thoroughness in both practical and theoretical aspects of operating a recreation vessel. As a BoatSafe training provider since 2006, Karla has had the opportunity to offer comprehensive training to new and experienced mariners that give them the skills and knowledge to confidently undertake basic navigation, boat handling and understand the safety requirements and responsibilities under the law.
As your professional trainer, Karla is happy to pass on knowledge and experience and issue a Certificate of Competency or Achievement Award. She is looking forward to shaking your hand and seeing the smile on your dial as you head off to experience your own nautical adventures. For further training and vessel handling upskilling, Karla recommends the Advanced Practical, Broadwater Navigation and Offshore Navigation Course. Boat Design Trends 2022 By Dianne Katra
Looking to refit, refurbish or refresh the furnishings on your boat in 2022? These are some of the things you may want to consider before embarking on the journey. Styles come and go with the years, but the continuing trend for neutral colour palettes with splashes of colour or pattern are still going strong in the design world. Trends have, however, moved from a cooler grey palette to warmer tones, which suit many boats perfectly as they often have timber cabinetry. Below are some tips for refurbishing and modernising different areas of your vessel. SALOON/DINING/ENTERTAINING AREAS As always, keeping these spaces light is important, but there is a move towards darker flooring/carpets. These are actually ideal for boats, which generally have carpeted walkways that carry a lot of traffic from outside. Many boat owners are also opting for vinyl planking rather than carpet in the main entertaining areas, although this can sometimes be difficult with existing timber cabinets and tables. However, it is important to keep all the rest of the décor light to balance the darker floor. There is a trend towards using outdoor fabrics for indoor lounges as well, with many outdoor fabrics now exhibiting a softer, more luxurious feel. This allows for a co-ordinated indoor/outdoor design approach for seating as well as excellent wear and cleaning benefits. Options include using plainer fabric inside with throw cushions that have a pattern and then carrying that through to rear deck and flybridge cushions. The other trend for interior lounges and seating is for chunkier, woven materials. These work extremely well in boats with lots of gloss timber, toning down the shininess with a more earthy texture. Match this with velvet throw cushions and complementary colours and patterns for a fabulously tactile, sophisticated finish. CABINS Again, neutral tones that tie into the rest of the interior décor are key here. Keeping walls, roofs, curtains, bedheads and bedding in a light colour is also very important in cabins that are generally fairly tight for space. Custom bedspreads or fitted coverlets rather than doonas or blankets add a touch of elegance as well as ensuring that making the beds is a breeze! Keep in mind that the more cushions you have to dress the bed, the more storage you require, which can be quite problematic in smaller cabins. Splashes of colours in ornaments, pictures, cushions and throws can really lift small spaces, but just make sure they coordinate with other areas of the boat. These colours can then be matched to towels and other accessories in the bathroom(s) to present a unified design. OUTDOOR AREAS These days, the massive range of outdoor furniture fabric is well and truly overtaking the traditional vinyl which have been used in cockpits and flybridges for decades. However, there are many new and sleek vinyl options available that can be teamed with accent piping or diamond stitching. This can take your outdoor seating to another level. Sunbrella is now just one of the companies making outdoor fabric. There are now literally dozens of fabric houses extending their ranges to include outdoor furniture materials that can be used in outdoor entertaining spaces, poolside, by the beach or on boats! These fabrics bring together great designs, textures and colours with easy-to-clean properties that are UV-resistant, and are resistant to fading and sun damage. When undertaking any refurbishment or refit work on your boat, it is really important to decide on your basic colours and fabric for all of the areas of your boat to ensure you have a coordinated design for the décor, even if you are not planning to redo all the areas at once. At the moment, planning is also something that needs to be taken into consideration. Marine trimmers, upholsterers, cabinet makers, plumbers, electricians, shipwrights and all the associated trades are in huge demand on the Gold Coast, and wait times to get work done can be lengthy. Shipping and supply delays are also making themselves felt throughout the industry and we continue to see lead times to get products from overseas blown out. So get organised, plan and book your work in to make sure it can be completed in the timeframe that suits you.

GOLD COAST CITY MARINA & SHIPYARD CLOSING THE LOOP ON WASTE
AND ESTABLISHING A CIRCULAR ECONOMY
The award-winning Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard (GCCM) is yet again setting standards in the Australian marine industry. After partnering with the Centre for a Waste Free World at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) to establish the “Closing the Loop on Waste" @ GCCM program in July 2021, GCCM will ultimately lead to the establishment of a circular economy within the Gold Coast-based shipyard.
“GCCM have always led the way in sustainable shipyard initiatives like solar and water harvesting. We also partnered with the Seabin Project, meaning we have one of the first Seabins in our marina,” explains Luke McCaul, GM Customer Experience & Property Management. “We are very proud of our current accreditations through the Marina Industries Associations.”
These accreditations include Level 3 Clean Marina, Fish-Friendly Marina, and the globally recognised 5 Gold Anchor accreditation, in which environmental practices account for almost 15% of the total score.
There will always be more to do when it comes to environmental conservation. Being in such proximity to our waterways, GCCM understand the importance of reducing their waste and, as a result, their environmental impact. The first three months of the project were spent deliberating, researching, and appraising waste streams onsite. The first workshop was held in August and saw key stakeholders within the shipyard, environmental industry leaders, representatives from local and state government and QUT researchers all gather to discuss the issues they may have with their current waste streams in hopes of finding a solution. “It takes like minds, and it’s really great to see the participation of all the local businesses here that are starting to truly understand that what they refer to as waste is valuable and the resources are probably just in the wrong location right now,” said Rod Packer, Manager Strategy & Innovation in Water and Waste for City of Gold Coast. “Education is going to be key to getting the fundamental and structural change in the thinking in this organization with regard to what can happen.”
With the data and information gathered at the workshop, QUT then established a report based on the materials discussed and developed several different options to address each challenge – challenges, with over 90 on-site businesses, GCCM is sure to face.
Currently, GCCM is stepping into the second, and arguably the most important, phase of the project focusing on implementation and promotion. With the support of the City of Gold Coast, GCCM established a presence on the ASPIRE platform where they have begun to trade and sell materials. The platform allows users to connect with others who may have ‘waste’ which may be useful to someone in one form or another. This means materials that may have normally cost to remove from site, now potentially have economic and environmental rewards. Turning ‘one person’s trash is another person’s treasure’ into a practical, useful alternative to sending some materials to landfill.
The project was most recently put to the test. An endof-life vessel came to GCCM to be deconstructed and disposed of. Typically meaning much of the 15-tonne vessel would end in general waste. Based on the project's findings, proper steps were put into place during the works. Onsite business, Sweep Marine Services deconstructed the vessel and diverted roughly 50-per-cent of the materials from general waste into timber recycling, scrap metal and e-waste receptacles. With the help of Aspire, we have been able to quantify this farther into an embodied carbon emission savings of 66.2 tonnes. This savings is equal to 81.1 acres of forests saved according to the Environmental Protections Agency (EPA).
The case study is just a small example of how GCCM plans to roll out the project throughout the yard within the next few months. Another workshop was held at the end of November 2021, that brought back those same key shipyard stakeholders. The aim of this workshop focussed on the education and implementation process of these activities designed to drive a cultural shift in the industry. A shift that has been taking place for a time now.
“A lot of new owners are asking about recycled material, how do we make the boat greener, how do we stop pollution coming out of the vessel,” explained Kevin Altera, GM Operations & Business Development at GCCM.
These conversations have already been taking place at GCCM and their current environmental practices have resulted in several high-profile vessels choosing their shipyard over others on the East Coast of Australia.
“It’s very important we keep that conversation rolling and we’re being proactive,” assures Altera.
GCCM have been in operation for 21 years and plan to be here in years to come, so a long-term sustainable approach to the environment is at the very core of their offer and is rightly becoming an important requirement for their customers. Being able to provide for these forward-thinking vessel owners, businesses and the environment means this award-winning yard will continue to come out on top in the future. ISLAND GYPSY 40
twin-cabin model is twice as nice
The Island Gypsy 40 strikes a chord with this seasoned yachting couple. After 50 years in the construction industry, seasoned offshore sailor, Clive, and his wife, Gaile, are looking forward to a retirement with plenty of time on the water. “I’ve been in boats all my life,” states Clive. “In PNG, the South Pacific, cruising, racing, then in Brisbane, enjoying Moreton Bay and the east coast. When I retired, I took some time to really consider what kind of boat we’ll invest in for days and days of pleasant cruising.” Shopping around on the Gold Coast, Clive and Gaile paid a visit to Gold Coast City Marina, and were attracted to the clean lines of the Island Gypsy 40. They stepped aboard to find out more about the Australian-designed motor yacht and speak to the designer himself, Brett Flanagan. “It was a real head-turner,” he says of the brand-new, two-cabin 40-footer that had just arrived in the country, fully-specced as Brett’s own boat, with full Raymarine navigation equipment, air-conditioning and additional refrigeration, cockpit covers and gloss walnut interior. “What first struck us was the trawler-style exterior, which harks back to the classic Halvorsens of the 60s. Then we went on board and really, we couldn’t fault it. Brett has got everything right. It’s the best finished boat I’ve seen.” Among the features that stood out for their practicality and finish are the twin cabins, optimising every last bit of volume, the full-height shower, interior colour-scheme, Corian benchtops in the galley and the lazarette in the cockpit. For socialising and dining, two tables in the cockpit fold out to create a dining table with seating all the way round to accommodate up to eight guests. Guests can enter the boat via the swim platform or using the port and starboard side gates into the cockpit, which is brilliant for guest safety and ease of access. Deep walkaround decks are yet another safety feature, as is the helm-side door for the skipper’s comfort and vision while docking. The twin-cabin model means Clive and Gaile can store their gear for longer sojourns at sea, or welcome in-laws and extended family aboard for overnight stays. This IG40 is equipped with a single 288hp Nanni/John Deere diesel engine and with its bow and stern thrusters, is extremely easy for the couple to handle. “We reach a top speed of around 13 knots, which is plenty, and a cruising speed of around 10 knots at 1,700 rpm, which uses around 15 litres of fuel per hour. We’re thrilled with the operating costs so far. It can be very stressful when boating is costly. With Island Gypsy, Brett has created an extremely fuel-efficient and low maintenance vessel that’s easy to love. The single shaft-driven diesel engine with keel protection is extremely efficient and low maintenance. Everything is so well set up for safety, ease of living and aesthetics,” continues Clive. “The boat came complete with everything a boatie would want for safety, leisure, fun and fuel economy.” They bought the boat in June 2021, which they called “Gaile Force”, because as Clive explains “Gaile really is a force of nature!” and have spent the winter months getting to know her on the Gold Coast. Now that spring weather has declared the season open, Clive and Gaile are planning trips further afield, cruising to Moreton Bay, Tangalooma, Bribie Island and up to Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast.
Clive White and Brett Flanagan
“We’ve enjoyed every minute aboard so far, and we’re looking forward to more stress-free cruising over summer. It’s been fantastic to deal with Brett and the team. Everything they promise, they deliver.” Boats International is currently awaiting the arrival of seven Island Gypsy 40s, all of them sold, as well as the 50 which is sold, and the twin-engined 65-foot flagship, also sold. Underway at the factory are two 40s, which Flanno is keen to negotiate on and customise for their new owners. Delivery time is estimated at around six months. “It really is an attractive proposition,” says Brett proudly. “Island Gypsy offers the best of all worlds – for all their features, they’re affordable, economical to run and we provide full-service and support up and down the east coast of Australia. We’re very proud of our brand and we’re extremely satisfied that boaties are appreciating the Island Gypsy differences. Our sales and feedback are testament to that.” THE ISLAND GYPSY 40 TWIN-CABIN CRUISER IS PRICED FROM AUD$649,000. PRIVILÈGE EUPHORIE 5
PREMIUM BLUE WATER CAPABILITIES
French catamaran builder Privilège is well known for its luxurious, sea-worthy and expertly crafted range of sailing and power yachts. The Privilège boatyard in the historic sailing port of Les Sables d'Olonne on the French Atlantic coast, built the first Euphorie power cat in the early 1990s, at a time when power catamarans were a rare sight. The successful design worked so well that the yard delivered more than 50 vessels at that time. The new Privilège Euphorie 5 builds on that legacy and is a leading example of what is now a very popular class of motor yachts. After all, power cats offer incredible volume, space and stability under way while dispensing with headwinds, calms and of course the hassle of sails. Renowned designer Marc Lombard created the threedeck Euphorie as a combination of luxurious space and long-range performance. He says the 50-foot multihull is “dedicated to long-distance cruises where comfort and range are a priority”. Standard power comes from twin 220-hp Yanmar diesels, with a cruising speed in the 12-knot band and a maximum range of 1,000 nm. With an upgrade to 320-hp Yanmars, the Euphorie 5 tops out at 20 knots, and has a range of about 345 nm at 10 knots. A lot of attention has been paid to the design of the aft third of the hulls in order to have more volume and an inverted curve that acts as a flap. The aim is to optimise the work of the propellers and limit pitching to two degrees. The design tweaks are most noticeable against the chop: minimal pitching, gentle movements and reduced spray. The Euphorie has been optimised for speeds of 10 to 15 knots, but its handling and efficiency remains excellent at lower and higher speeds. The end result is a flexible performer that can trickle along at displacement speeds to maximise range, but also easily picks up the pace for shorter point-to-point dashes. Being a purpose-built power cat, its lines are far sleeker and the deck spaces more flexible than its sailing counterparts. Inside the large well-appointed saloon by acclaimed interior designer Franck Darnet, the Euphorie 5 features elegant accents of leather and lacquered wood. Alcantara settees complement light oak furniture, and the ambience is relaxed with natural tones and textures. The fully equipped U-shaped galley is forward and to port, with lots of counter space, a dishwasher and ice maker. A chart table area immediately adjacent to the cockpit has navigation instrument repeaters to control the smoothrunning of the boat when on autopilot. To starboard is an inviting L-shaped settee/dinette with a large table. Windows all around let in natural light. The Euphorie’s massive 7.98 metre beam enables a huge aft cockpit that encompasses a long bench lounge, beautifully crafted table and U-shaped lounge. Wide teak steps on both sides lead back down the spacious swim platform. A stainless-steel spiral staircase, an impressive feature in itself, connects the saloon with the flybridge and its commanding, panoramic views. Protected by a hard T-top, (a must for Australian conditions), there’s room here for an outdoor galley, fridge, plus an eight-person dining area. A comprehensive helm station is located forward to starboard. The large dashboard with integrated 12-inch screens are within easy reach of two very nicely stitched flip-up helm chairs. Staggered mini-steps molded into the coach roof provide quick access to the foredeck, which has three sun lounges. Privilège makes the Euphorie 5 with either three or four cabins, with queen beds or two singles, ensuite heads, and showers. The three-cabin version is equipped with a fantastic seven-metre-wide master suite forward that straddles both hulls and includes a separate shower and toilet room on either side of the boat. It’s a true retreat, with an island king berth mounted in the expansive floor space. A desk, a vanity table with pop-up mirror and 11 skylights that flood the cabin with light, make it comparable to an extremely comfortable apartment on land. The superior construction of the Euphorie 5 is a hallmark of the Privilège brand. All bulkheads are made of infused closed-cell foam coring; no plywood or balsa is used. Aluminium inserts are used to fix the deck equipment and stainless-steel pillars for the flybridge hardtop. The deck and planking are reinforced by laminated foam omega ribs, combining rigidity and lightness. The Euphorie 5 is customisable to fulfill your dreams of extended cruising in comfort and safety. Prices vary depending on engine packages but $2m AUD will secure a version with twin 220hp power plants, ex-factory. www.teamwindcraft.com/privilege
Stejcraft Boating Life
SLEEK AND SEXY, SHE TURNS HEADS
Story by Tanya Rabe
Graham Cuskelly, director of Main Beach Enterprises on the Gold Coast, recently became the proud owner of a Stejcraft SS64 Bowrider (6.4m / 200 HP Mercury outboard). Having spent over 40 years on the water in various parts of Australia, Graham knows a thing or two about boats. For a number of years, the Cuskelly family have been exploring the inland waterways of the Gold Coast in their trusted tinnie. Living in a high-rise building close to the water at Main Beach, Graham says opportunities for boating are right in front of him every day. “It’s easy for us to check out the conditions on The Broadwater and just offshore.” Having one of Australia’s best boating playgrounds on their doorstep, the family decided to take their boating experience to the next level. That's why, in June 2021, Graham invested in a SS64 Bowrider handcrafted by luxury boat builder, Stejcraft. Feeling spoilt for choice with so many options, Graham decided to buy a Stejcraft because it was important to him to have a locally designed boat which was also built on the Gold Coast. “The model we chose was competitively priced and from the moment I walked through the door, I was made to feel comfortable and confident in my investment.” For Stejcraft owners, this is not an uncommon experience. When it comes to buying a boat, we all have our wish list. Graham was looking for a great design coupled with sleek lines, good manoeuvrability, stability in all conditions, comfort for the whole family, and plenty of accessible storage space at an affordable price. The SS64 Bowrider ticked all of those boxes and more. It is a great design and it comes with the right amount of technology, H2O-grip flooring, plenty of storage and a remote anchor winch. Graham was also able to customise the boat to suit his needs, adding a remote electric anchor winch, VHF marine radio and dual battery system. “I added these optional extras for convenience and a higher level of safety for my family and our guests.” With the new Stejcraft conveniently moored on an airdock close by their home, Graham can be on the water in less than 15 minutes. The family own a small start-up business on the Gold Coast – GC Boat Tours. Needing a comfortable and reliable boat for business, Graham enthusiastically explains, “The Stejcraft has proven to be the perfect boat for taking guests sightseeing on the Gold Coast’s sheltered waterways.” Whether it’s guests of GC Boat Tours, family or friends, everyone who has been on the new boat has been impressed with the style, quality and comfort of the SS64. When Graham is not conducting tours, he is on the water with family and friends. Depending on the prevailing conditions, they either head out the Gold Coast Seaway offshore or up to Southern Moreton Bay Marine Park. When conditions are less favourable, they cruise the rivers and many canals around the Gold Coast. One of Graham’s favourite boating locations on the Gold Coast is Jumpinpin. “The area is easily accessed from The Broadwater but it feels as if you are a million miles away, especially on the quieter days of the usual working week,” says Graham, who is happy being on the water anywhere. “It is such a great way to both relax and enjoy the outdoors.” When buying a quality boat, it is reassuring to know that you will be looked after beyond the sales pitch. This is the care that Stejcraft Boats pride themselves on. “Tim Cantanese and the staff at Stejcraft are great to deal with,” says Graham. “I made some changes along the way and Tim was incredibly accommodating.” During the construction of his boat, Graham frequently visited the factory at Arundel. The Stejcraft team encourage owners to be involved in the entire process from ordering, through the build, to delivery and handover. Even after launch, the Stejcraft relationship remains solid. As Graham’s boat is not trailerable, when it comes time for servicing, all he has to do is meet the Stejcraft crew at a convenient boat ramp and they will take care of everything else. It is these complimentary gestures that seal the deal. As both a business owner operating on the water and a recreational mariner, Graham has no reservations recommending Stejcraft. He knows he has invested in a quality vessel that provides comfort and safety for everyone onboard, and he has an ongoing relationship with the builder who delivers on promises.
Volvo Penta has improved the functionality and features of its next-generation Electronic Vessel Control (EVC 2) system and expanded the system to its complete marine leisure gasoline range and D8 diesel engines – with plans to gradually make it available for D11, D13, and D16 diesel engine ranges. When Volvo Penta’s pioneering EVC system was first launched in 2003, it was the height of innovation – and it continues to be the foundation for Volvo Penta’s full systems approach of integrated features from helm to prop. A major upgrade to the EVC platform was introduced in 2019 with EVC 2 together with the new D4-D6 engine. This included a new electrical architecture that ensures faster software download, improved diagnostics, and traceability, as well as offering the prospect of upgrading to additional functionality in the future.
The EVC system has enabled the company to integrate features – like the Joystick Docking, Dynamic Positioning System, and Glass Cockpit – from helm to propeller. The system delivers on Volvo Penta’s easy boating philosophy – making the boating experience easier and more accessible.
Recently, Volvo Penta announced that its EVC 2 system – previously only available to D4-D6 engines – is now available to its complete marine leisure gasoline range and D8 diesel engines. The system will also be expanded to D11, D13, and D16 diesel engine range in 2022. The EVC 2 system is also fully type-approved for all major classification societies – which is an asset to both marine leisure and commercial customers. And that’s not all, there are a host of benefits.
JOYSTICK DRIVING FOR GASOLINE ENGINES
Operators of twin gasoline engine installations can now benefit from an improved experience at the helm with the introduction of Joystick Driving. This feature is fully integrated with the Volvo Penta autopilot and allows the captains to maintain a set heading, manoeuvre with precision, and steer comfortably at all speeds with only one hand. ONBOARD MAINTENANCE ASSISTANT
A key new feature is the onboard maintenance assistant, integrated into the platform. This intuitive system informs users of service dates, while also tracking past servicing and diagnostic information in real-time.
The EVC 2 platform also features just one single connection point for diagnostics and software updates – regardless of how many engines are in the installation. This offers greater ease of maintenance, as well as enhanced software downloads and diagnostics.
NEXT-GENERATION DIAGNOSTICS
The new electrical architecture ensures faster software downloads, improved diagnostics, and traceability, as well as the ability to upgrade to additional functionality in the future.
FLEXIBILITY
The modern electrical architecture of the EVC 2 allows more features to be connected into the system of the vessel, giving builders more flexibility in the complete process of building a boat, all the way from ordering, manufacturing, and delivery.
PAVING THE WAY FOR NEW FEATURES “Securing functionality growth is an important part of EVC 2,” explains Jonas Welinder, product planner at Volvo Penta. “Many of the innovations that have set us apart over the years have derived from EVC, and the superior level of experience it enables. Notable features such as the Glass Cockpit, Easy Connect, Assisted Docking, and Water Sport Control would not be possible without this intuitive integration platform. HAINES HUNTER ANNOUNCEMENT
UNIQUE DEADRISE VEE HULL DESIGN
MARINE CARE QLD AS DEALER
Haines Hunter is pleased to announce the addition of Marine Care Queensland as their newest dealer. This new appointment will provide the greater part of Brisbane and Gold Coast fishing and boating enthusiasts an exceptional dealer to test and purchase a Haines Hunter vessel.
General Manager Alan Riesenweber comments, "Our primary goal at Marine Care Queensland has been to align ourselves with a small number of strong and prestigious brands that fit our business model. We pride ourselves on delivering a first class buying experience and exceptional after sales service. We see Haines Hunter as the best-known boat brand in this country and to have them associated with our business is a perfect match. Haines Hunter has a very strong following in Queensland, which dates back to the late 1950’s."
Marine Care Queensland will be able to display Haines Hunter boats at their large bayside showroom, enabling buyers the opportunity to drive a Haines Hunter prior to purchase and ensure they choose the model that best suits their needs.
Haines Hunter Managing Director John Haber says, “The timing could not be better as in the last 24 months we have released six new models that are perfectly suited to the Queensland market. One of these being our 675 Enclosed which uses the same hull as the 675 Offshore range which won the Trade-a-Boat Magazine ‘Best Fibreglass Fishing Boat’ award. We have also released the 725 Range in the offshore, R Series and the Enclosed versions, and the New 760 Enclosed. Marine Care will be able to deliver Haines Hunter Yamaha packages with fantastic service to our customers."
Alan further states, "We are minutes from the boat ramp and can take customers out for a sea trial with no fuss. The ability to have a customer on the water in quick time is where the Haines Hunter brand comes into its own with its exceptional handling and offshore performance. This is something that any potential buyer will greatly appreciate as it instills a strong sense of confidence and security with their purchase. This is really what we want our buyers to experience, and we can efficiently deliver that."
THE POWER OF RESALE At Haines Hunter, we understand that boat owners are constantly looking forward. While each boat we release is of the highest standard, many anglers and boat owners outgrow their vessels and want to upgrade to larger models.
What Haines Hunter can offer current owners and potential buyers is the power of resale; and with a Haines Hunter it’s very powerful. Our 60 years of design excellence and high quality craftsmanship have made us one of the most sought after and researched boats on the second hand market. A Haines Hunter can still hold excellent value even 10, 15 and 20 years after purchase.
Managing Director John Haber emphasises, “At Haines Hunter, we make boats to last and each model has an almost cult following on the boat and fishing scene. This is what provides buyers with the ability to sell their current model at a great price and then upgrade into a new Haines Hunter. We have countless customers that are in their third or even sixth Haines Hunter and while that’s a testament to the quality of the boat, it’s the excellent resale value that allows them to keep upgrading.”
Many of the design and build processes at Haines Hunter are unique to the industry and are put in place to allow decades of marine use. Whether you’re buying a boat for life or you’re looking to upgrade, Haines Hunter’s resale value offers buyers the luxury of choice.
Marine Care Queensland is open six days a week at 30 Gordon Road, Redland Bay QLD 4165 and is looking forward to getting you out on a Haines Hunter for an offshore trial. www.marinecareqld.com
So you’ve found your dream boat and have made the smart choice to engage a marine surveyor before you commit to the purchase. You’ve taken a great step towards protecting your investment, but where do you start in your search for the right marine surveyor in an unregulated industry?
The good news is you’re not alone in your journey. The Australasian Institute of Marine Surveyors (AIMS) has a membership of over 400 surveyors with varying degrees of experience and qualifications. We take the professionalism of our surveyors seriously and our members adhere to a strict Code of Professional Conduct and ongoing yearly Continuing Professional Development. Our transparency helps consumers make an informed choice in their surveyor.
When making contact with a marine surveyor, take the time to ask a few questions. Do you know what type of survey you need? A pre-purchase and insurance survey are not one and the same. An insurance survey is primarily for the needs of insurance companies and is often a tick box report outlining the features of the vessel. It provides little information or peace of mind for the boat purchaser on the quality or condition of the vessel. A pre-purchase survey is much more detailed and reports not only on the features of the vessel but also the condition including any evident recent repairs or future maintenance requirements. A pre-purchase survey will cost you more, but its value is worth every cent. Don’t be afraid to ask the qualifications and experience of your surveyor. What is their professional background that led them to marine surveying? Have they undertaken any marine surveying specific qualifications, such as a Diploma of Marine Surveying? Do they have the expertise to provide a mechanical report as part of their survey? And do they have prior experience on boats such as yours specifically? A quality surveyor will usually advertise their expertise and can answer questions to confirm their suitability for your survey.
Is your surveyor covered by Professional Indemnity Insurance? Ask for evidence of their insurance coverage before you begin, you want to make sure all bases are covered in the event things don’t go as planned.
Ask your surveyor for a Terms of Engagement if they don’t provide one. This document outlines the specifics of the survey type and report to be provided as well as survey costs and payment terms. It is critical in clarifying exactly what you are getting for your money and in the undesirable event that things don’t go as planned, can form a legal agreement to fall back on. If your surveyor does not provide a Terms of Engagement agreement, you can download one from the AIMS website free of charge. Insist on getting your terms in writing before you begin.
Armed with all this knowledge, you can confidently undertake the task of selecting your surveyor and getting the right survey for your needs. There is no better way to proceed on the adventure of boat ownership than with peace of mind for the safety of your asset and all those onboard.
The Australasian Institute of Marine Surveyors believes in the value of a quality survey and consumers can turn to us and our surveyors to assist you well on your way. If you are not sure if your surveyor is a member you can search the AIMS database at www.aimsurveyors.com.au or give us a call on 02 6232 6555.
GETTING READY TO BUY A BOAT? THESE 5 TIPS SHOULD HELP
1. Make sure that your boat (and trailer if required) has a survey before you buy and ensure that you, as the buyer, appoint the surveyor of your choice. That way you can be sure that the surveyor is working for you and no one else. 2. Give the surveyor all the reasons why you want to buy a boat, what you are intending to use it for and where you intend to use it.
Prepare a list of all of the things you want the surveyor to take special note of. 3. Make sure that lifesaving equipment and a beacon are on your list. 4. An owner might tell you that they have already had a survey done and offer you the report, but that report was commissioned by them and should not be passed on.
They are unlikely to give you a report that highlights repairs needed and you can’t assume that a report hasn’t been altered. 5. If you are going through brokers, be aware that they are often clients of surveyors and regularly send work to a particular surveyor. If a broker is adamant about you using a particular surveyor, walk away.
The wrong surveyor could cost you more than a new boat.
Getting out on the water is a favourite Aussie pastime and we want to help you make sure that the boat you purchase is suitable for you and what you want it to do.
Purchasing a boat is a big investment and things can and do go wrong so you want the best advice possible.
Engaging a Certified Commercial Marine Surveyor™ to help you buy a boat makes a lot of sense. A quality condition survey is the best investment that you will make as part of the buying process.
Getting it right the first time may just save your life.
So how do you choose a surveyor that is right for you?
There are no Government controls that regulate the minimum qualifications or experience required by a marine surveyor in the recreational boating industry.
The Australasian Institute of Marine Surveyors encourages boat owners to only engage a Certified Commercial Marine Surveyor™.
We care passionately about getting you out on the water because we love it too – but more than that we care about your safety and that means we care about your boat.
Check your marine surveyor’s qualifications yourself or talk to us before you purchase a boat or engage a marine surveyor.
It's our profession, not our part time job.
To become a Certified member of the AIMS, surveyors must provide evidence of their qualifications and experience that support the areas of specialisation they advertise.
AIMS Surveyors also commit and adhere to the AIMS Code of Professional Practice giving you, the boat owner, greater peace of mind.
BLUE WATER 480
Ideal tender or trailer boat
The SKiP brand is named after the old Norwegian word "skip" meaning “little ship”. SKiP Inflatables specialise in tough lightweight aluminium hulled RIBs. The SKiP Inflatables range of aluminium tenders has over 40 different models, from 2.0m to 8.3m in length. In Australia, SKiP Inflatables are distributed via their Gold Coast warehouse, which has the full complement of tenders on display with many different colours in stock.
BLUE WATER SERIES: DESIGN AND LAYOUT
The SKiP Inflatables Blue Water series is designed as a tough, yet lightweight tender for larger cruising yachts. The open deck layout maximises space, which, in combination with the aluminium targa bar, makes for a very versatile tender – great for fishing, water sports, or just exploring extended waterways with the added safety that RIB provides. The targa bar is an ideal place for navigation lights, radars, antennas and aerials due to its high vantage point. It also offers a tow point for water sports, keeping the towrope high and clear of the prop, and is fantastic for fishing accessories, like rod holders and cutting boards.
All control cables and wiring are cleverly concealed under the floor in looming trays, keeping decks clear and wiring high and dry above the bilge. Another great design feature is the overpressure valves installed in each air chamber that allow excess pressure to be released from the tubes, in case of a collision or the tube having been over inflated. Other key features include deluxe closed-cell foam cushions with piping, davit lifting points, double transom tow points, forward anchor locker, and choice of centre or side console. The Blue Water range is designed with harsh conditions in mind. The integrated long-range 80L fuel tank, full non-slip deck, and a 20°-deadrise will let you take on even the roughest conditions confidently. With the impermeable qualities of the aluminium hulls, there is no need to worry about gel coat chips, or putting the boat on a coral beach or trailer. Aluminium will not delaminate over time, retaining its agile performance and weighing the same in 10 years time.
THE BLUE WATER 480: ON THE WATER
Our test boat for this review is the Blue Water 480, powered by a Yamaha F70. The hull is constructed with a 4mm thick marine-grade 5052H32 aluminium, and the inflatable collar is an ORCA®828 CSM coated fabric. ORCA®828 is used in commercial boats up to 6m in length. It is the best fabric currently available to withstand abrasion, high temperatures, and UV rays. Aluminium offers many advantages over fibreglass-hulled tenders, in weight, savings and durability.
With the beautiful Gold Coast weather, we could not resist getting the boat out on the water for some water sports. With between four and five people in the boat all day, towing a skier was no problem at all. With the fuel tank up forward, the boat bow rise is really reduced when getting up on the plane. These boats are light for their size and are very manoeuvrable, with the inflatable collar proving extremely stable at rest.
Underway, this boat was a lot of fun to drive. As we headed out through the Tweed River Bar, we found that the hull was predictable and very responsive. This is a soft riding dry boat and your passengers will be pleased with the ride quality, especially on longer trips.
Ideal as a tender for larger motor yachts, the BW480 is equally suitable as a trailer boat towable by smaller family vehicles and easily stored in a modest space with the tubes deflated.
The performance numbers were taken with two adults in the boat in calm conditions. However, in choppy conditions, the numbers would not differ greatly as this is where a well-designed RIB really starts to perform at its best in comparison to other boat designs.
