24HRS COLD, 12HRS H WITH OUR MARINE GRA STAINLESS STEEL DRIN BOTTLE. One of the reasons we decided to align ourselves with Red is their high standard of innovation and quality. They leave no stone unturned in creating solutions for those who want to get out and enjoy some serious SUP time! Over the past 10 years Red Paddle Co has grown in to a world-leading paddleboard brand, built on the ethos of designing quality, with no compromise products.

Beyond the boards however, they were frustrated that well thought out products designed for our sport and 3 lifestyle were still missing.

Whenever they wanted to go on an epic paddling adventure, compete in an endurance race, or even spend a relaxed day at the beach with friends and family, they were having to compromise with accessories and gear that didn’t do what they really wanted it to because they were designed with other things in mind - and often poorly made. Who hasn’t felt like that before?!

Plastic pollution in our seas is an ever incr

Thankfully they decided to design their own premium range of things paddlers really needed – definitive versions of the kit you actually need, featuring all the elements you would ever want and using quality materials that look awesome too!

As you would expect from Red, performance, style and user-centric design is at the forefront of the range. You’ll find innovative new approaches to age old problems (‘What do I do with my valuables when I go paddling?’); and re-imagined must-haves (‘Why do change robes have to be cheap and nasty?’). We have been using the Red Original range this summer and couldn’t be happier! Whether it be for a morning SUP, travel adventures, work outs or afternoon surfs with the kids; we love all of it whether it is the hardworking and hardwearing coolbags, amazingly insulating hot/cold drinks bottle, or the board lock that keeps our gear secure when we’re not paddling.

4 5 All the range is designed to enable the ultimate experience, whatever your style of paddling, and they’ve made sure they have a multitude of uses beyond just 3 watersports - helping you get out there and EXPLORE YOUR WORLD. Check out our favourites or order yours today:

Skippers urged to be safe and take 30 Second Challenge

In an emergency on the water 30 seconds could be all the time skippers and passengers have to grab life-saving safety equipment.

fatalities recorded in WA in the 2016/2017 financial year – a record high and triple the recent annual average of four deaths.

The Department of Transport (DoT) wants those heading out on the water to be prepared and is advocating skippers and passengers take the 30 Second Challenge which tests readiness for an emergency response on board a vessel.

This initiative, which tests if people can gather flares, EPIRB, make a radio call and don a lifejacket in 30 seconds, responds to the detailed analysis of incident data which showed that better maintenance of safety gear and improved accessibility could have limited the number of tragedies last year.

Safety gear needs to be well maintained and easily accessible if it is to be effective in an emergency situation. There have been 28 lives lost in recreational vessels in the past four years with 13 recreational boating

In the lead up to the boating season we want skippers and those who go boating to take the challenge and test their readiness in an emergency. Hopefully people who do so will learn from the exercise and make changes if required.

The importance of safety gear can never be overstated – tragically 70 per cent on WA waters in the last four years may have been prevented if the person had been wearing a lifejacket when they entered the water. People can visit www.transport.wa.gov.au/30secon dchallenge to find out how to take the challenge then like MarineSafetyWA on Facebook to upload it. DoT will be challenging skippers to take the 30 Second Challenge and get safe boating advice at various locations over the State.

With thousands of kilometres of coastline, Western Australia is indeed paradise for boaters and offers an incredibly varied range of boating experiences. There are many great destinations for boaters and some are rightly famous, such as Rottnest Island, the Abrolhos Islands and, of course, the amazing Kimberley. One spot which doesn’t get as much publicity, partly because it is in the coolest part of the State, is Albany, on the south coast, but those who know it regard it as one of WA’s best-kept secrets. The first landing point on the western side of the country for the British back in 1826, one can only imagine their joy at finding such a perfect sheltered anchorage on their often testing journey. They were the first boaters to explore Albany and what they would have found is very similar to what visitors today find – a great range of locations ideal for most marine activities. Whether it be aboard a powered boat, yacht, jet ski, kayak, canoe or stand-up paddleboard, Albany is a perfect destination for those who like to get out on the water. While the Southern Ocean can be a bit chilly at times, one of the great things about Albany is there are so

many locations you can indulge your aquatic passions and you can almost always find a protected patch of water in all but the worst weather. On a good day, the world is your oyster and you can head out to the Continental Shelf to fish, chasing deep water fish like hapuka and blue-eye trevalla, or stay in a bit closer and look for prized demersals such as pink snapper, queen snapper and dhufish. Albany is the spiritual home of king george whiting, named after the beautiful King George Sound that offers the oceanic entrance to the town, and off which two delightful harbours can be found. KGs are a regular catch in the Sound, as are the tasty squid and

humble herring, and even a small dinghy will suffice when the weather is decent. If the weather is not so good, the harbours and rivers offer another option for trailerboats, and the Kalgan River is noted for its black bream and unique population of fast-growing mulloway. The calm waters of the Kalgan also offer an ideal area for water skiing (there’s even a ski jump), kayaking/canoeing and using an SUP. There’s crabs in the lower reaches of the Kalgan, which feeds into scenic Oyster Harbour, which is also a good spot to catch small KGs, bream and herring.

Oyster Harbour is another good spot for paddling, and even just a family leisure cruise in its protected waters.

fishing for bread and butter species like herring, skippy, squid and whiting.

The King River is much shallower and not great for boating, but suitable for kayaking and canoeing.

Aside from the fish, there is plenty of other marine life to enjoy around Albany. Dolphins are often encountered and can pop up just about anywhere, while seals are another common sight around the offshore islands, and even occasionally in the harbours.

Princess Royal Harbour is the home of the local yacht club and as such is popular with those who enjoy their sailing, and again offers some good

The waters around Albany are also home to many seabirds, including some of the friendliest, and most persistent, pelicans you’ll ever encounter! The boating facilities around Albany are also excellent, catering for boats of all sizes. The main marina in town is a first-class launching location with two ramps. In all, there are four main boat ramps around town – two in Princess Royal Harbour and two in Oyster Harbour. There are also spots in the Kalgan and King rivers where boats can be launched from the bank, and either side of town there are beach launching options for smallish trailerboats. They didn’t have the range of vessels we do these days, but spend some time on the water around Albany and you’ll soon see why those early explorers, and many since, decided to stay!

From May right through to October, whale watching is a great option for boaters in Albany, and sometimes these magnificent animals come right into King George Sound. Humpback and southern right whales use Albany’s sheltered bays for calving and mating and come in so close they can often be watched from lookouts on shore.

GET WILD ABOUT SCAMPI CAVIAR

For some it's the excitement of the release of Star Wars or the next James Bond movie. Others it's the release of the new limited edition packaged something or other they desire. For me it's the release of a new culinary delight to try and when it's a new natural found product, just WOW. A jewel of the ocean, a deep blue ocean coloured jewel. Wild scampi caviar. Well it's what floats my boat, gets my adrenaline running. The taste buds tingling. Spotting this on Facebook earlier this week, my

heart skipped a beat. Not only a new product to try - but it was available in the slice of paradise where I live, the Whitsundays and I only had to wait a few days. As I counted down the hours and sleeps, Saturday morning arrived and off to market I went. Well skipped actually. Gathered some weekly produce then off see Matt at the Fishi's stall I went, collected my pre-ordered tin. Excitement plus. With more will power then I realized I had, I decided to wait another day and truly appreciate my new experience, on my day off.

Being the junkie that I am I gathered some oysters, prawns and a mud crab to make a meal of it, a splendid meal, champagne bubbles and all. Although now I would recommend a bottle of Piquepoul white wine. A wine and oyster match that goes beyond heaven. Better still go a bottle of both, indulgence is what its all about. So thoughts? Well the first taste was just on buttered white bread toast, how I have enjoyed other caviar's before. Yes it was different, not as much punch as the black caviar I have had the pleasure of devouring. Definitely more of the prawn flavour, well it is scampi roe after all, with a true taste of the ocean. Doesn't linger

like the other caviar's. As for wow factor, it would bring most dishes into the lime light. Fresh, salty, and little bursting balls of delight. Next I tried it on an oyster, felt it was a little lost but then, the star of the tasting sensation began. A big pile full on the mother of pearls caviar knife to the next natural oyster was when it sung to me. The coating of the oyster in my mouth really brought the flavour of these little sapphire pearls to life, bursting with flavour, there own blue fresh ball of natural ocean delicacy. The mud crab almost lost its star attraction, well I said almost. The culinary delights our waterways bring to us is sheer heaven for the taste buds.

The roe found on the outside of the scampi, is hand picked, sorted and tinned in November to March, in North W.A ocean waters about 1/2 km deep. Preservative and colour free, just amazing. A natural true gem that mother nature offers to us. Definitely a show stopper for your next dinner party, or as I did just for your own sheer pleasure. Don't have to ask a junkie twice, and it's all in the name of research. Bon appetite.

RECIPE Ingredients A dozen natural oysters, at least White sliced bread toasted Some good quality butter One tin of Western Australia Scampi caviar A bottle of Piquepoul white wine. Goes so well with oysters, a must try.

METHOD

Just enjoy

Planning your perfect Autumn trip If you’ve had a busy start to 2019, chances are you’re already thinking about your next camping holiday! The Summer holidays might be well and truly gone for another year, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to begin retreating inside. In fact, Autumn can be the best time of year to book a caravan and camping trip! Here are a few reasons why we think everybody should consider taking a trip this Autumn: The best of both worlds There are elements of both Summer and Winter that make camping trips great. Winter brings the slow mornings and potential to sleep in, while Summer brings the long days and shining sun. Autumn is a perfect combination of both! The peace and serenity While we all love a Summer caravan and camping trip, campgrounds and holiday parks are often completely booked out. In Autumn (particularly during school term), chances are the campground will be a little quieter and you’ll get a bit more space for your own setupwho doesn’t love that?! Evenings by the campfire Everybody loves a campfire, but they can be a bit much in our hot Aussie summers! Autumn is the perfect time of year to enjoy temperate days outside before sitting back to enjoy a toasted marshmallow or hot drink while you wind down and get cosy. The atmosphere There’s something about the change of season that always feels special. Autumn is one of the most magical times of year to take a caravan and camping trip, and a weekend (or more!) in the great outdoors is the perfect way to appreciate the beautiful season. If you’re in the market for a new recreational vehicle for your Autumn camping trip, it’s also important to choose something that fits with your needs and will help you make the most out of every opportunity. Some people might require plenty of seating, others need off-road capabilities, and some will want to drive the vehicle rather than tow it. For those who aren’t sure what they should be looking for, our handy vehicle quiz will help you narrow down your options and get on the right track for your trip! Q: What benefits can I expect after installation? Q: Can I get this delivered Australia wide? A: yes also delivering to New Zealand. Q: What maintenance is required for my Tailfin? A: Most important is to regularly check that the bolts and bars are all tight and greased with anti corrosion inhibitor.

Swimming with the gentle giants of the sea. THE ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME EXPERIENCE ON WA’S NINGALOO REEF. Sometimes, someone will suggest an adventure that hasn’t even appeared on my radar. Which is exactly what happened when the idea to snorkel with whale sharks came up. It was at that moment my WA trip evolved, and an unexpected new item was immediately added to my travel bucket list. Once I had booked that tour, I truly didn’t realise I was in for the adventure of a lifetime!

Even after doing some pre-holiday research, I still had no idea what to expect. There are those everyday kinds of tours, and then there are those epic ‘wow’ tours that you never forget. You really never know what you are going to get. On the morning of the tour, we headed out with the crew from Coral Bay Eco Tours. Straight away, I had a strong sense that this was the start of one of those extraordinary tours – I couldn’t have been more right.

As the boat filled with people from all walks of life, the excitement became palpable – everything from the bubbling enthusiasm to the silent apprehension. The crew entertained and educated as we started to cruise away from the coastline displaying the beauty and vastness of the Ningaloo. I was mesmerised by the contrasting turquoise blues of the ocean against the breathtaking coastal orange-red hues. While the crystal clear water offered a unique view into the

underwater joys of the World Heritage listed Ningaloo Marine Park. After briefings from the crew and a quick dip to familiarise ourselves with the snorkelling gear, we were prepped and ready for our first encounter with a gentle giant of the sea. When the first whale shark was spotted, excited whispers buzzed around the boat. When you first jump into the big blue, right next to one of the world’s largest ocean

creatures it is nothing short of mind-blowing. In fact, it's almost surreal! Watching as such a massive, majestic fish glide past you slowly scooping up plankton the experience becomes otherworldly. Your perception of size seems to shift and it’s almost as if you are at one with it. Time stands still and you never want it to end. I was lucky enough to witness three whale sharks that day, and share the water with two of them. Then, quite unexpectedly a humpback whale was spotted and all the tour boats were treated to a tail

slapping display from the impressive cetacean. The crew prepared a delicious, fresh and dietary-friendly lunch on the boat while we cruised along the coastline and coasted over the beauty of the marine park. On our way to a post-lunch snorkel among the coral and tropical fishes on the inner reef, we encountered playful dolphins and gliding turtles before yet another trip highlight – the elusive dugong. The captain was able to keep the boat a safe distance and yet get close enough for us to witness the incredible creature

snuffling along the sand and coming up to the surface for air before disappearing into the distance through the clear turquoise waters. Such an epic tour I couldn’t possibly have imagined anything like it. I really would’ve loved to see a manta ray ... but that’s probably just being greedy. So maybe it wasn’t a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Off to look up tours now!

Bush’n it on a budget Western Australia’s Awesome National Parks

We’ve been travelling in Western Australia for 6

CAPE RANGE

national parks and we’ve visited SO MANY. It’s

Cape Range National Park is your gateway to the

months now, it is home to some pretty impressive impossible to say which is our ‘favourite’ as they all hold something different and amazing! There are

though, a few stand outs to us that have made our journey even more epic!

Most national parks in WA cost $13 per vehicle to

enter so we highly recommend getting a WA parks

pass if your lapping or taking a longer holiday in WA (RAC members get 50% off!)

world heritage Ningaloo reef so that in itself makes it pretty impressive. This national park is definitely up there with one of the best – we swam with

turtles in the ocean just 100 metres from our camp! Ningaloo reef is so accessible from Cape Range and when snorkelling from ‘Oyster stacks’ you

don’t have to swim out at all which makes it perfect for the kids or those that are a little bit nervous.

As well as being home to some of the best snorkelling and diving in Australia it also

has some pretty impressive beaches like

Turquoise bay and some awesome camp spots like Osprey bay!

When visiting Cape range don’t forget to

check out the Eastern side of the park, it seems a world away from the oceans of

the west side but hosts some wicked views over the spectacular Rough range and Charles Knife gorge.

KARIJINI We were always expecting Karijini to be amazing and it was just that! One of the

most ‘famous’ national parks in Australia, Karijini is hiking heaven and unlike

anything we had seen before. There was a brief moment where we nearly missed Karijini out as we were told it was just

going to be too much with two little ones – if you are told this DON’T listen, yes there are some difficult walks but they’re so fun with scrambling over rocks and wading

through water the kids don’t even realise they’re hiking, they’re just having a good

time! Even if you decide the grade 5 walks are too much there are lots of other easier ones to do such as Fortescue falls which

takes you to a refreshing swimming hole.

Weano Gorge is awesome and if you are

able, I would definitely recommend giving the walks in this gorge a crack – you will not be disappointed!

Karijini is 100% worth the de-tour!

WILLIAM BAY William Bay National Park is located just a few kilometres away from the town of Denmark. William Bay is one of the

national parks that is totally free but that doesn’t at all mean it’s any less

impressive, in fact this place took our breath away.

William Bay National Park is home to

Greens pool, Elephant rocks and Waterfall beach. Greens pool is amazing, the

sheltered green waters make it the perfect place for swimming and setting up for the day. The massive rocks that shelter the bay make the best natures playground.

Elephant rocks is another sheltered beach

with massive elephant like rocks protecting you from the open waters. Waterfall beach is another great spot, the waters are

choppier on this beach BUT yes! It does have a waterfall on it!

FRANCOIS PERON Francois Peron National Park is one we hadn’t heard of before getting there!

Located just outside of Denham in the

Shark Bay Area it’s well worth the visit! We were lucky enough to find some private

beaches with crystal clear water and good fishing!

Francois Peron is the desert meeting the sea and its amazing to see the red cliffs contrast with the white sand and blue ocean.

Although worth the effort, the roads into

and out of Francois Peron are deep, sandy and difficult and a high clearance 4WD is needed – it’s the only national park I’ve

seen with a tyre air compressor station on the way in and out!

CAPE LE GRAND Cape Le grand, the home of Lucky bay,

the beach with the bluest waters, whitest sands and resident kangaroos. So many people have Cape Le grand on their

bucket lists and it’s so highly talked about we thought there was going to be the risk

of it being overrated, it most definitely isn’t!
Cape Le grand isn’t just Lucky Bay, it has beach after beach that all have that

distinctive magical blue water. There are also plenty of walks to do in the national

park for all levels of fitness. Frenchman’s

peak is a popular walk that gives you 360

views over the national park, it is a harder one with its steep accent and decent but

totally worth it! From the campsite at Lucky bay there’s a great walk to Thistle Cove that is fairly easy and showcases great lookouts along the way.

Cape Le grand has two camping areas,

Lucky bay and Le grand beach. Le grand beach is a lot smaller and has a more

bushy feel whilst Lucky bay is very much

like a caravan park with all the facilities but with more space and million dollar views!

Head over to our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/bushniton abudget/ to keep up to date with what we’re up to and catch some information on some awesome places to visit!

LPG &TOW SAFETY LEARNING TO A CARAVAN Towing a caravan for the first time, or even the tenth time, can be pretty daunting. It requires skill and knowledge of not only how to handle your tow vehicle but also how to read the conditions and any emergency situations that may arise. The best advice, once you buy your caravan, is to do a course or towing clinic. You can find these for all levels of experience and knowledge from rookie to more experienced. However, if you are planning on a lap of Oz, or even just towing a van down the road for a week at the beach, then we strongly recommend you look into taking a course to not only preserve the safety of you and your family, but all of those who share the road with you. Towing a caravan isn’t just as simple as hooking up and

driving off, regardless of what Dave up the road says to you. Its knowing how to manage your load in urban areas, its knowing what to do when a sixty metre road train takes the wind from underneath you at 100km per hour and it’s knowing how to safely reverse into that tight caravan bay with 20 other caravans around you. If you know how to tow, but haven’t done so in a while, it’s also a great idea to refresh your skills. You need to make sure your

skills and knowledge are relevant to the caravan that you are towing. It’s a bit easier to tow a little camper trailer to a fifth wheeler. Towing courses are also a great way to ensure you have the necessary knowledge for knowing how to drive off road with your van, safe vehicle recovery, understanding tow ball options, chains, weight distribution, mirrors, radios, brakes, wheel bearings, jacks, tyres and anything else that is necessary for safely towing a caravan.

Contact your local Auto club like RACQ, RACV or NRMA, or speak to your caravan dealer and they will be able to point you in the right direction to find a course for your skill level. Before you think about towing a van you might also want to ensure you have the right drivers licence. If you got your licence before the end of 1996, you are entitled to drive a vehicle and trailer combination of up to 8,250kg Maximum Authorised Mass. If you got your licence from 1997, you are entitled to tow a car and caravan combination weighing 3,500kg or less. In addition you are able to drive a vehicle up to 3,500kg and tow a trailer up to 750kg behind it. Important for the grey nomads, when you turn 70 the rules change and you need to apply for permits to be able to keep towing. For everyone, if you want to tow a heavier caravan you need to pass an additional driving test. Its probably a good idea to check with your State’s Motor registry and make sure you are appropriately licensed for your set up.

Towing a caravan is a big deal and if you are new to it then its recommended to have a check list of all the things you need to do before you put your food on the accelerator to start moving. Have you done all your pre trip checks and servicing? Is everything closed and locked down? Are the legs up and the wheel chocks away? Are all your connectors and chains on? Have you checked your mirrors, and lights? Once you are on the road it is important to concentrate even more than driving when not towing. You need to make sure you are allowing extra space and be aware of the time needed for braking and accelerating.

It is more important now if you can to share the driving, or if you can’t have regular rest stops. Driving fatigued when towing is very unsafe. For many people caravanning means being out bush or on the wide open ride is why you are out there. However you need to share these roads with trucks. Be aware of trucks, they can push the caravan around and cause sway with the wind gusts. Just slow down. The other point of anxiety for many people new to towing a van is reversing. The best way to get rid of this anxiety is to practice it a lot in a non stressful environment and don’t rush. If possible, have someone standing outside to communicate directions. And not through a closed window where you can’t hear them. Once you are confident with towing, the world is your oyster. What are your best tips for towing a caravan?

PLANNING A TRIP? 7 Things To Do Before You Start Your Family House Sit

When someone has put their complete trust in you and your family to care for their home and their precious pets, it can feel like a huge responsibility. Add kids to the mix with their unpredictable nature and sometimes wild ways, and the stress levels can bubble over! We know you want to do it well, and return their home in the same, if not better condition than it was when you moved in, but we also know that accidents can happen. We want your house-sitting experience to be an enjoyable one and minimise the risk of any mishaps. To help you out, here are our top 7 tips for getting your house sit off to a good start.

1. If possible, visit the house beforehand. While it may not always be possible, we recommend a tour of the house with the owners first. This way you can familiarise yourself with the property, there will be no surprises when you get there, you will also have a chance to meet any pets and familiarise yourself with their personality. You can also assess how the house will be for YOUR family. If you see anything that you know will need to be moved, rooms that will need to be closed off or anything else that will make your house sit with your family incident free, let the owner know. They will appreciate the guidance!

2. When you arrive at the house to start the house sit, do a sweep of the place before your kids enter! And no, we don’t mean a sweep with a broom… more like a sweep for any potential disasters! When we did a recent house sit, the home owner was kind enough to leave a bunch of toys, (like marbles!) out for our kids to play with. This was awesome for the 4 & 7-year-old. Not so awesome for the baby who loves to put EVERYTHING in his mouth. I went through the house and boxed up everything that was not baby friendly, that was breakable or that was at risk of being sabotaged by Edward, our 1 year old. Having all this stuff away from the beginning made for an easier start and a more pleasant stay. Ask the home owners beforehand if they’re alright with you clearing off shelves or moving things like photo frames and vases (and try to put them back as best you can how they were at the end of the sit).

3. If you have kids under 3 …have a Baby Proofing kit! After you have cleared out any excess, now it’s time to baby proof (if that’s still required in your family). We have a collection of cupboard locks, a baby gate, and a playpen that we use when we’re house sitting. We were a bit slow to get these initially and spent a good deal of our time picking the contents of Tupperware cupboards off kitchen floors and wondering if it was us that had lost lids! We use this baby gate… and these baby proof locks. Both are available from Kmart, but places like Bunnings, BigW and Target have similar. Local Facebook Buy Swap & Sell or Marketplace are also a good place to pick baby proofing supplies up cheaply.

4. Waterproof mattress protectors for the beds. Before anyone has any naps or goes to sleep, make sure that you have popped a mattress protector on the bed. You can guarantee that the moment you don’t have one on, someone will have an accident. You don’t want to clean your own mattresses, let alone someone else’s.

5. Have a family meeting to establish ‘house rules’. Our kids loved being involved in discussing and setting rules for our house sits! Miss 7 enjoys being the scribe and law enforcer! Setting some rules from the beginning makes it clear to all family members what’s expected of them and the level of respect that is required in the house. We stick ours up on the fridge for easy review by all. No jumping on couches, no throwing things inside, etc etc.

6. Take note of stock levels! Going around the house before you get settled in, and taking note of the ‘amount’ and brand of things left, will leave no guesswork at the end of your stay. Toilet paper, washing powder, milo… if you’re going to use it, replace it! It is easy to forget if there were 5 rolls of toilet paper or 10, if the washing powder was yours or theirs… especially when there is more than one person in the house. Take photos or take note and you will thank yourself later. Sure, most home owners won’t mind if you use what is in the pantry or bathroom… but there are some that might. Here at Family Friendly House Sitters, we encourage you to leave the house that little bit better than you found it, and this is one of the ways to go about achieving this.

The most successful house sits that end with the best feedback are the ones where there have been clear guidelines for both parties. Our tools help you with that! Go through the checklist with the home owner and make sure you have as many bases as possible covered. That way you know who to call if there is a water leak, what to do if a pet gets sick and if the Grandparents are welcome to come and spend a night! We hope that you found these 7 ways to make your

house sit family friendly helpful! Are there any that you would add?

We designed the Family Friendly House Sitters House Sit Handover Form to ensure that there is an open line of communication between the home owner and the house sitter, and you’re not left wondering if it’s okay to use the tomato sauce in the fridge or not!

West is Best

When I was asked to write about my favourite place I’ve been to in West Australia for this issue I had mixed emotions. I was excited because everywhere in WA that I have been so far is my favourite. I absolutely love WA. But then I felt torn because I’m not sure how I can choose just one place.

So, I decided I would focus on where I am now. I know I’ve sung the praises of the Pilbara before, but it really is one of the most spectacular regions. It’s an arid desert with ancient landscape, ancient history including one of the biggest collections of Aboriginal rock art, it is red dirt under a hot sun, it is a coastal wonderland with some of the most beautiful coral

reefs and deserted beaches. It is tied tightly with industry, the mining industry is king, but it’s the people and the stories that make it unique. Where else would a dog be one of the most famous and honoured residents. The Pilbara gets under your skin. Stretching from the Ningaloo

out through the desert to the Northern Territory border and up past Port Hedland it is one of the biggest regions in the country. We have been based in Karratha now for a while, we decided to stop here while we

top up bank accounts, and get some funds together for a van upgrade. The experiences we’ve been able to have in this time, and the friends we’ve made will make it very hard to leave.

The Pilbara is very much an outdoor playground. Weekends are for camping, caravanning, fishing and exploring. The land is harsh and unforgiving but with so much beauty, it can literally take your breath away.

Some of the places and experiences we’ve loved in our time here are swimming in the incredible gorges at Karijini National Park and Millstream Chichester National Park; cruising around the Dampier Islands, watching the spectacular display of the Staircase to the Moon, exploring some of the coastal and inland towns like Onslow,

Newman, Tom Price, Point Samson and Port Hedland. Spending an extended period of time here has meant we’ve also been able to get involved in community activities like volunteering with the West Pilbara Turtle Monitoring Program and helping to monitor turtles over the nesting period, something you don’t get the opportunity to take part in when

you are moving faster. Our time in the Pilbara has been incredibly special, and as I sit and write about this region now, we are under a Yellow Alert waiting for Tropical Cyclone Veronica to hit us. The way the community has come together during this period shows again what a truly magical places the Pilbara is.

Post script post cyclone: We have now been on Red Alert for almost 40 hours and the cyclone is just about to bear down on us now. The community spirit throughout the Pilbara has been incredible. People have connected over social media and kept each other going. I hope when we eventually are able to leave our lockdown abodes the damage is not too great.

TEARDROP TRAVEL SERIES John & Margaret’s Great Adventures Part One

THE GREAT OPEN ROAD Not many people need to be convinced that travel is fun, rewarding and unforgettable, however sometimes you may need a little bit of inspiration to push you in the direction of your next trip away, whether that is a local day trip, a weekender of that trip of a lifetime you’ve had in your had for years. Two of our lovely customers John & Margaret had a busy 2018, travelling from Perth-Darwin & Then Perth-Adelaide on two separate trips that simply looked stunning. To help inspire your next trip, we decided to highlight some locations that were must sees in their eyes, although, they must admit there weren’t really any downfalls at all.

LAKE ARGYLE CARAVAN PARK KARIJINI NATIONAL PARK Found in the heart of Western Australia’s Pilbara region, Karijini National Park is Western Australia's second largest national park. With no shortage of things to do including; visiting ancient caves, staying at an aboriginal-owned eco-lodge, climbing some of the planets oldest rock formations, swimming in waterfalls, camping under a star filled sky, walking along some of the extensive walking trails or just relaxing in the drop dead gorgeous scenery. The park is about 1400 kilometres, from Perth, with the road trip being an experience in itself. Once you’ve entered the park, its wild, weathered landscapes are surprisingly accessible with waterfalls, emerald pools and plunging gorges beginning just beyond the car park. Bring your walking or hiking boots for the huge selection of walking tracks, which range from easy to arduous and wander through the marvelous vista.

Lake Argyle Caravan Park is located just off the Victoria Highway at the end of a sealed road. Covering an area of more than 5 hectares with over 100 shady powered caravan sites, shaded by large hills to the west in the afternoon, the park is set in a serene location surrounded by breathtaking scenery, including a million dollar view from the onsite infinity pool. While the place has a relaxed focus, you will find plenty of amenities including a restaurant, a bar with beer garden, BBQ’s a camp kitchen and a shop with the essentials. It is a great place to base yourself away from the hustle and bustle of the large towns to enjoy your exploration of the East Kimberley region with easy access to great walking trails and breathtaking lookouts.

EL QUESTRO STATION Amid the vast and ancient landscape of Western Australia’s East Kimberley region sits the untamed natural beauty of El Questro. El Questro is a destination unlike any other and offers the freedom to explore one of Australia’s last true frontiers. From deep gorges and majestic mountains to thermal springs, mud and salt-flats, rainforests and cascading waterfalls everything the Kimberley has to offer is located across the property's 700,000 acres and is why they say that El Questro is the heart of the Kimberley.

ESPERANCE It probably won’t come as a surprise to most that Australia has the worlds best beaches (yes, we are bias) but Esperance is on another level with beaches such as Cape Le Grand National Park, Lucky Bay, Hellfire Bay and Stokes Inlet ready blow your mind. Immersing yourself in the impossibly blue water or relaxing on the pristine white sand is not all there is to do, however. There is whale watching, world-class fishing, hiking trails and the incredibly pink world famous Lake Hillier, found on Middle Island, part of the magnificent Recherche Archipeligo.

THE GREAT AUSTRALIAN BIGHT

The Great Australian Bight, an open bay off Australia’s south coast, was first explored by Europeans as far back as 1627 and is believed to be created around 50 million years ago when Antarctica and Australia broke apart from each other. It truly is a sight to behold, consisting of beaches, cliffs and rocky crevices, this stretch of coast is an idyllic spot for whale watching, as the endangered Southern Right Whales migrate to the region in winter to breed. The whole area in fact is teeming with sea life, including sea lions and great white sharks.

Images and article by Rohan Moredount

Depending on how much time you have and your level of adventure, you could head off to the Kimberley and beyond to visit the outback wonders like Karajini, Lake Argyle and El Questro or perhaps you will head south and across the country instead, visiting the coastal wonders of Esperance & the Great Australian Bite. Maybe you will even do both, like John & Margaret seeing a lot of our great land in a short time span. Whatever you do, don’t miss the chance to explore this big great world.

QUESTIONS 1. WHAT WERE YOUR FAVOURITE DESTINATIONS? Ningaloo Station, WA – picture perfect, secluded white beaches and dunes, few or zero campers within cooee, mating turtles, reef fishing, and a real chance to test the off road capability of our van. We lowered tyre pressures to 20 psi and covered a distance of around 50 kms from bitumen to beach, over rocky (and I do mean rocky) tracks onto soft sand over a hard sand base. One way in and one way out – the only problem (??) we could find was one cracked egg when we returned to the bitumen.

3. WHAT WERE YOUR FAVOURITE CAMPSITES, SPOTS FOR RESTING? El Questro, WA - Once you reach the resort, via a dirt road and two water crossings, you can elect to stay in the main campsite, or head out to one of the private riverfront campsites. Some of the private sites are considered safe for swimming whilst others are no swim areas which need you to be mindful of the local crocs! However they are all reached via station tracks and you need to have a van which is small enough to be able to get in and out of the site. The Caretta is Off Road and small – yeah! Oh, and self-sufficient, as there is no power or water. We spent five days/nights in half shade, running our fridge, lights, tv/video, charging phones and powering fans, and still had half a battery life to go. Robin Falls, NT – Another picturesque free camp with zero facilities. Two days and nights camped in full sun for a large part of the day showed a zero reduction in our available battery life.

4. WHAT WERE YOUR LEAST FAVOURITE CAMPSITES, SPOTS FOR RESTING?

6. KNOWING WHAT YOU KNOW NOW, WOULD YOU DO IT AGAIN?

Newman – a dust bowl which cost $40 per night for power and a shower, without ground cover and shade. The dirt is so hard you can hardly get any purchase for the awning pegs. Exmouth RAC caravan park – all vans with pets were located on adjacent sites abutting the main highway, although there were plenty of spaces available as it was not high season. The self-contained nature of the Caretta bedroom, with large roof vent for star gazing or tv/video or lights for reading/playing cards meant that we could ignore the outside for a while.

We especially want to return to Karijini NP, the Kimberleys, Shark Bay and Ningaloo Station, and at some point in time we will complete the Gibb River Road. But there are also so many other places to explore both on road and off – Uluru, the Flinders Ranges, FNQ, the Victorian high country, to name just a few.

5. WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY? IF YOU WERE TO DO IT AGAIN. Leave Darwin for the return journey a few weeks earlier and tackled the Gibb River Road. As it was, we only just arrived at El Questro prior to their closing for the season and the other stations heading towards Broome on the route had already shut up shop for the season. We have every confidence that our Off Road Caretta would handle the water crossings and dirt roads and with a full water tank and extra tyre on the roof rack there should be no issues. However, as all good boy scouts and girl guides know, being prepared never hurts and knowing that there is available assistance at the end of our UHF is always comforting should things not go to plan.

Our intention in all future trips will be to maximise our time free camping as we are confident that features of our Off Road Caretta will allow us total flexibility to travel off grid for multiple days at a time. And the best spots tend to be away from the crowds!

7. INSIDER TIPS/ ANY OTHER HIGHLIGHTS? We chose our Caretta because we were ready to leave our tent behind, but did not want to opt for a house on wheels. A bedroom on wheels with an outdoor kitchen and living rooms as far as the eye can see is more our style. After travelling in very hot weather, over 40 degrees for 14 days, we think that others should consider Choosing the larger air vent Getting the door screens installed Upgrading to the compressor fridge

Most importantly, get out there and have fun!

STATION STAYS WA STYLE Last month we delved into the amazing array of the types of experiences you can have across Australia camping on stations and farms. Western Australia, with its size, remoteness and isolation has an incredible number of opportunities to experience station life, especially in the north of the state or experience life on a farm in the south. In the Kimberley and Pilbara regions stations are huge, sometimes bigger than small European countries, and the people who manage them have characters to match. Station stays give those of us with more urban backgrounds the chance to find out what, its like to muster cattle by day and share stories around the campfire by night, farmstays are fantastic for kids to help to feed the animals, collect eggs, milk a cow. The opportunity to get out bush and detox from technology is priceless. Here are my picks for station stays in WA.

There are however, lots more to choose from depending on where in WA. I suggest you jump onto the Station Hoppers website which is a great source of information about station stays all over Australia.

El Questro Probably the best known station stay in WA. El Questro Station spans over 700,000 hectares and is along the Gibb River Road out of Kununurra. There is a range of accommodation ranging from luxury to camping, along with a choice of restaurants, bars, swimming pools, and a variety of tours including 4WD tours, fishing, horse riding, river cruises and helicopter flights. El Questro Station is no longer a working station, it’s primary focus now is tourism and it is the quintessential Kimberley experience. It has deep gorges and mountains, natural thermal springs, mud and salt flats, rainforests and waterfalls and a huge network of tracks perfect for exploring.

Pardoo Station
Pardoo Station is a working cattle station at the start of 80 Mile Beach around 160km out of Port Hedland in the Pilbara. Pardoo Station is remote but with great access to Pardoo River and the ocean its perfect for a fishing escape, birdwatchers and just wanting to escape the rat race. While Pardoo is a working station, they have set up a caravan park for guests which has all facilities, including swimming pool and fire pit. The Station store stocks all food staples as well as any fishing gear you might need, alcohol and station merchandise.

Pardoo Station spans 200,000 hectares from the coastal flats to the plains. Apart from fishing there are opportunities for 4WDing and if

you visit between March and September you can see the annual muster.

Quobba Station Quobba Station has reached new notoriety after a couple of Hollywood hunks recently had ‘their best holiday ever’ on this remote Station situated on the edge of the Ningaloo Reef near Carnarvon. Quobba Station is a work pastoral station, but it is also the home of Red Bluff, an eco retreat with one of the most beautiful surf breaks around. Apart from Red Bluff, Quobba Station has several other accommodation options from bush camping to luxury chalets and is

perfect for fishing, snorkeling, whale watching and ,experiencing the incredible marine and native wildlife that are abundant in the area.

These are great fun for families with the kids given opportunities to help feed the animals and collect eggs and interact with native animals.

Quobba Station is around 187,000 hectares and is bound by Gnarloo Station, also a great Station Stay option, and Boolathana Station.

Accommodation options range from caravan park style camp grounds and cabins to farmhouses and eco retreats.

Margaret River farmstays

These farmstays are a great base for exploring the rest of the region including wine tasting and experiencing the amazing coastal and bushland experiences of the Margaret River.

Further south is a bit of a different experience. The Stations give way to the farmgate and Margaret River has a great selection of working farms and vineyards that have an option to stay.
