In the shop with Airbag Man Well recently this GMC Denali had its first sleep overs, and well let’s just say the time apart from owner one would of thought similar to a mother parting with her new born for the first time. However the time in the Airbag Man shop was only going to make her stronger and be well worth the time apart. The crew at Airbag Man proved to be beyond trusting, reliable and true genuine guys. The knowledge of their products and vehicles will blow you away. They are incredibly passionate about their business, their product and the industry and the vibe you feel the minute you walk in to the business at Brendale in Qld you understand why the Airbag Man brand is strong and one you would trust. The Denali went in for the Wireless controlled airbag suspension helpers to be installed to rear

end leaf springs with an on board compressor and aluminium air tank with tyre inflation kit. Although this package is the top of the range option, the more budget option of airbags with inflation valves that you add air to at a service station, is also a very good option and investment. Having this set up in the Denali, means the Ability to maintain vehicle ride height under all different weight carrying scenarios with the wireless control to adjust airbag pressures, inflating tyres after a day at the beach (the set up includes a good quality gauge) and you will be every kids best friend inflating soccer Balls, footballs or their inflatable beach toys. Let’s not forget how handy the air hose and compressor is when travelling remotely to be able to blow out filters of dust and dirt while maintaining the vehicle on trips.

The compressor tank in this install is placed in the rear of the tray, the guys will discuss placement with you however for this install there was a lot of wasted space under a ledge at the rear of this tray and was the perfect spot for the compressor. The air hose connection fitting is then fitted at the rear of the vehicle and the air hose supplied is long enough to reach all four tyres even on this long wheel base truck. This Denali is used for towing a 23ft caravan, and a large race car trailer distances around Australia, so the ability to maintain a safe and comfortable ride height was as important as any other maintenance and prep work invested into when prepping for a trip. Undulations and unexpected bumps in every day travel can compromise your safety on these long road trips, add a heavy load and this can be catastrophic, and why take this risk when there is a product out there as good as this one

that can give you that extra confidence when travelling. If you are towing any kind of load, this is a great inclusion and investment. Opting for this set up over heavier springs is so when you are not carrying a load, you simply deflate the air bags to maintain original vehicle ride height and the vehicle is back to nice comfortable factory suspension ride over the stiff rough ride experienced with a heavy spring when you are amongst everyday life with no load. If you are considering investing into a product to make your set up safer, more comfortable than you really can’t go past the experience, the product and the customer service of Airbag Man.

The customer service is second to none, with all the staff being exceptionally friendly. They are well versed in airbag suspension systems. This knowledge, clearly coming from many years in the industry and not to mention the constant moving within this market to always be ahead of their game.

AFTER INSTALLATION ADD ONS –DIY STYLE

All products and their components are well made, good quality and clearly have had extensive R & D invested into what goes on the shelf and hits the market.

You get a lot for your investment with Airbag Man and you won’t be disappointed. We definitely weren’t. If you are looking to discuss options get in touch with them or one of their trusting dealers they are all equipped to answer your questions and to discuss your options suited to your requirements.

If you are the hands on type and consider yourself a DIY kinda guy/gal than following was added after the install:-

• •

Added various length off the shelf hoses from Bunnings to add to the kit for different applications. Added an off the shelf airgun (again from the trusty local Bunnings) A tap to the airline connection point was fitted so that when the airline is unplugged it wasn’t under pressure and to reduce the force of the air escaping from hitting the ground, and the other Advantage of having the tap is that it makes it very easy to install and remove the airline as it’s no longer under pressure.

(Please note the above are not required and are just little extras this owner chose to do)

STRAIGHT FROM AIRBAG MAN The replacement of bump stops within a vehicle, with the installation of Airbag Man air assist airbags has been in practice for over 20 years, and industry practice for over 30 years. Airbag Man have carried out extensive testing and independent evaluation of this application to ensure suitable replacement of the bump stop function. When utilised as instructed, the maintained Operating Height of the air spring assists to progressively increase the air spring pressure, and in turn the vehicle suspension rate, under suspension deflection. Moreover, when tested at 0psi the air spring side wall and air spring end plates form the same structure when compressed as the factory fitted bump stop. This provides the primary bump stop functionality of preventing metal on metal contact between the vehicle chassis and suspension.

Airbag Man air assist airbags are designed and specified to suit each vehicle application, and when installed correctly meet all general vehicle modification requirements, including not limiting the suspension travel by more than one third in bump and rebound. Should any further information be required, or for any questions relating to Airbag Man product, please contact your product supplier, or Airbag Man direct per the details below. The Evils of Cold Water & The Fantastic Benefits of Warm/Hot WateR This simple tip (written here for winter, but applicable to some degree year round) is one of the simplest, yet most profound things you can do to protect yourself from getting sick (colds & flu’s etc), to prevent that ‘heavy/depressed’ winter feeling & helping avoid those extra kilograms that always seem to enjoy making themselves at home at this time of year. Do you know why we get a ‘fever’

when we’re sick? The increased body temperature helps fight off the nasties. We all know we are more likely to “catch a ‘cold’”, when we subject ourselves to the cold. Yes, they are viruses, but it’s the ‘coldness’ that weakens our immune system, making us less able to deal with the invaders. So why make it harder for ourselves by drinking cold’ things...not to mention the disastrous consequences it has for our digestive ‘fire’.

TIP: DURING WINTER, COMPLETELY AVOID ‘COLD OR EVEN ROOM TEMPERATURE’ DRINKS - DRINK WARM & PREFERABLY WARM-HOT (BOILED) FLUIDS

Right now, go and get your favourite mug. Boil the kettle and start sipping warm/hot water regularly throughout the day. DRINKING WARM/HOT FLUIDS (PLAIN WATER MAINLY), •

heats your body assisting immune function, circulation and your capacity to tolerate the cold

avoids the multitude disastrous effects on digestion (which works through the principle of ‘HEAT) that ‘cold fluids’ cause

helps soften impurities/toxins & the results of previously badly digested food

aids the elimination of these impurities, helping internal cleansing, weight loss and even things like constipation & arthritis

notice how most people’s arthritis gets worse in winter... when the impurities ‘settle in’ to the joints

Cold water (especially ice-cold water), unless you are overheating/ it’s the middle of summer or you live in a very hot climate, is absolutely disastrous for your

health & wellness. According to the timeless knowledge of Maharishi Ayurveda, it totally destroys your digestive fire, making even the healthiest food be poorly digested (processed). It’s terrible for your immune system, digestion, joints and all-round wellbeing. So that’s it - change from drinking cold fluids/drinks to warm ones and watch & feel your wellbeing get better and better. How easy, simple & cost-effective is that? The only difficult part is enduring

the weird looks your waiter will give you when you request hot water at restaurants instead of the ‘healthdestroying’ iced-water they bring you as a matter of course. Unless of course you go to an Asian restaurant, where you’ll notice they bring you small cups of hot water or green/lemon tea etc!! Interesting huh? Anyway, don’t worry, you’ll quickly get used to being a little weird - and being a weirdo often means it’s much better for your health!

of the elements that intrigues me. Created in 1824 it’s probably one of the only bottles you will find, in any bar, in any sector of the globe and yet only the true masters know its true ingredients. How cool is that! For what it is worth as these things don’t apply to me personally, it is gluten free, 100% vegan, kosher and sodium free. It is used in many kitchens of the world, but once again a bit of a secret. As this ingredient popularity has grown, it has produced a brother. Orange biters, but we will touch on that one later. So, let me share my first recipe.

Angostura bitters and white chocolate chip cookies These cookies with their citrus note and Angostura aroma, studded with the creamy white chocolate and a real treat. Want lots, double the batch, you won’t regret it, waistline might though. Ingredients • ½ packet white chocolate buttons, 125g • 125g softened butter • ¾ cup brown sugar, 165g • 1 free range egg • 2 cups self-raising flour • Zest and juice of ½ an orange • 2 tbsp Angostura bitters

Method 1. Turn oven on to 180, 170 for fan forced. In a mixer or deep bowl with hand held mixer beat the softened butter and sugar together until creamy and pale. Add the egg, beat again then add the bitters, orange juice and zest and 1 ¾ of the self-raising flour, as I always say all ingredients are different, every orange will hold a different amount of juice. Mix this in, if the mix is too wet add the remaining flour. Mix till well combined. 2. Break the chocolate buttons into ½’s, or ¼’s, I like ¼’s, or use chocolate bits. I like the small little chunks of creamy chocolate goodness. Fold through the cookie dough. 3. Roll out approx. 1 tbsp. of cookie dough and flatten with your hands. See tip below. Place on tray lined with grease proof paper about 4cm apart. I like to then gently press each cookie with a fork, to give them a textured top. 4. Bake for 15 minutes, place on cooling rack to cool and try to resist eating one. Oh, bugger that, go ahead. 5. To store, if you have any left place in an airtight container. Enjoy and I must say, bloody well perfect with a glass of Angostura 1824 rum. Sip a little rum have a bite of cookie and repeat. A perfect after dinner treat, or morning tea for that matter Ha

Tips Best way to roll out the cookie is with damp hands; this will stop it sticking. Cookies can be shaped any size you want. Big large cookies or small bite size ones and you know what? Cookies don’t have to be round!

You can add more choc chips depending on your sweet tooth. Double the amount will work, go with what works for you.

THE STEREOTYPICAL CAMPING DAD Words and Images by Kool Kampers

You know the type. He’s a wiz on the BBQ; makes a mean roast in the camp oven over the fire he’s started from rubbing sticks together (or perhaps by using some sneaky fire-lighters and a match or two); and just oozes confidence ‘Bear – Grylls’ style when out in the bush. He spends copious amounts of money on that ‘fishing gear’ he says is necessary to bag

enough seafood to offset your grocery bill; is always finding something mechanical to tinker with; and just seems completely in his element in the great outdoors. With so many families planning to be – or already out on the road travelling this year, we have no doubt there are hundreds of you with a male in your life who hold similar traits and whom you’ll be celebrating this Father’s Day.

DAD’S RULE Let’s not get too corny… I mean, us ladies are still the backbones of our families, right??! Hahaha. But our men DO have their specific skill set and talents – like chopping wood and killing spiders – which make them a very handy addition to our travelling set ups! We thought this month it’d be appropriate to shine a light on everything the ‘man of our caravan’ does to make our tripping around Australia possible… and hopefully inspire you to take your own man along for your travels ;) The call to travel full time, for a lot of us, comes from that ‘freedom’ idealism –which can be squashed at times by the realities of

nomadic life. Have a quick think about what the ‘man of your caravan’ generally does on a day to day basis. It tends to be a little more than kicking back with a fishing rod day in and day out, doesn’t it? In our travels, Wayne is definitely kept busy doing the majority of our driving; cooking; schooling of the kids; planning our next destinations; and maintaining our set up. Life on the road wouldn’t be as smooth and enjoyable without him, and the whole family appreciate what he does to keep us having these phenomenal experiences on the road.

MOULDING THE NEXT GEN OF CAMPING ENTHUSIASTS Dads tend to instil a love of the outdoors into their children, and for me personally, I have many ‘heartmelting’ moments each week watching our boys soak up all of the attention they’re able to get from theirs with our travelling lifestyle. I swear at times it feels like we’re living an olden-days movie reel. Watching our boys learn to do some of those ‘hunter-gatherer’ type activities with their proud dad as their coach and mentor is super special. There’s fishing; making a rope swing; collecting firewood; starting the fire; cooking the barbie; helping with the car maintenance, and so, so much more they’re getting to practice and perfect! Fast forward a good decade (or two!) and we hope our kids will retain fond memories of this time in their lives and decide to pass on a similar experience and skill set to their own children.

A CHILD’S PERSPECTIVE DYLAN 12 YEARS: “Dad fixes everything to make our trip possible. If we didn’t have him to do that, I don’t think we would have gotten much further than South Australia – which was our first destination after hitting the road. I really love having one on one time with dad either kicking the football or playing basketball which is something we didn’t get to do much [before our travels]. I feel a lot closer to dad now. He’s no longer just ‘dad’, he’s now a friend as well, and I hope he enjoys his first Father’s Day with us on the road!” CODY 9 YEARS: “I really enjoy going out on day trips with dad as he makes them all really fun. My favourite is when we all went out to Spring Creek when

we were staying at the Ord River. Dad does all the towing of our caravan and picking out new camp spots which is very important. I feel very happy and lucky that we get to see him all day now, as when we were at home we only saw him a tiny bit.” LINKIN 5 YEARS: “My favourite thing to do with dad is to go fishing, now he showed me how to do it by myself. But he needs to put bait on my hook, I can’t do that yet. Daddy also cooks all of our food and makes us yummy desserts which I love! I really like being able to wake up and give him a big hug when I wake up every morning!” Join us in wishing all the Fathers (and Father figures) a happy Father’s Day this month!

100 Things To See In

This week only, get a free Kimberley, Australia sticker, worth $5, with every order* (no need to add one too your cart, we’ll just slip it in when we send your book). The Kimberley is one of Australia’s last untamed wilderness areas. It is a land of extreme beauty, extreme weather and extreme wonder. To travel here is an adventure, however you do it. 100 Things to See in the Kimberley is the culmination of a life spent exploring the Kimberley. Written by Scotty Connell, Kununurra local and award-winning tour guide, the 180-page ‘bucketlist’ book takes readers to some of Scotty’s favourite places across the north west of Australia, from stunning, fern-lined pools, to incredible waterfalls and through wonders found nowhere else on Earth. Unlike many destination guides, this one was penned by a local who spends nearly every day searching out its secrets. Each page has space for the reader to make their own notes; each of the places are mapped out in the front and all are included in the order you’ll come across them if you begin an adventure in Broome. A5 in size, it’s designed to fit in a backpack or a glove box, rather than be left on a coffee table.

“Despite reading just about everything that’s ever been written about this fabulous chunk of Australia, I’ve learned a lot more going through his book” — PETER WEBSTER, AUSTRALIAN BOATING MAGAZINE

“... that makes it unusual, because most tour operators keep their cards close to their chests, not sharing sites for people to explore on their own” — ALLAN WHITING, OUTBACK TRAVEL AUSTRALIA

“It might even turn you into something of an expert, or at the least stop you making rookie mistakes” — RICHARD ROBERTSON, EDITOR IMOTORHOME MAGAZINE

“Stunning photography and clear, readable and entertaining text in a breezy way to impart local knowledge.” — MARCUS CRAFT - EDITOR CARSGUIDE.COM.AU

HISTORY Originally in 2016, we were based at the Mooloolaba Primary School. The markets were held there for just short of a year, under the name ‘Mooloolaba Collective Markets’. In August 2017, we took the market on tour, renaming to Sunshine Coast Collective Markets. We hosted a market at Buderim in August and Big Top in September, before settling into our current location at Coolum Primary School in October 2017. We are so grateful to the amazing community who have shown us so much support by coming to each market day and by spreading the word across the Sunshine

Coast and beyond! We are also super thankful to Coolum Primary School, as they believed in our vision from the start, even when we only had 20 stalls. Now at 100+ stalls each market and twice a month, they have continued to offer us a welcoming home and a constant excitement for the future of the market! Lastly, a big thank you to all of our stall holders and your undending creativity! You have all made the market something special and we are blown each market day by the creativity and effort you put into each item!

ADVERTORIAL

Coolum Surf Life Saving Club celebrates 100 years It was 100 years ago on the Easter weekend in 1919 that Royal Lifesavers from Brisbane presented Coolum Beach local, Jack Morgan, with the first surf reel that would see the start of lifesaving services being provided on Coolum Beach. Coolum is proud to be one of the oldest clubs in Australia.

members mange over 60,000 beach visitations, complete 12,000 patrol hours and undertake around 1,300 rescues.

From that start the club has grown over the century to what it is today. With over 260 active patrolling members and 220 Nippers each year our volunteer

In 1936 the club completed it’s first clubhouse which was to last until 1962 when the Peter Lambert design “shark tower” club was built. This iconic structure was replaced in 1984 with a brand-new two-story structure that still stands today. Over the years this clubhouse has undergone significant transformations starting in 2009 when the club moved to the current upstairs/downstairs configuration and following with extensive upgrades to the upstairs area. More recently the club has completed a renovation of the downstairs lifesaving area and purchased a property to provide much needed storage.

Keith Peterie and Ron Want

As the club prepares to starts it’s 101st season of keeping Coolum Beach safe it is a good time to look back at a few of the milestones that got the club to where it is today.

From a membership perspective the club was reduced to just two members in the late 1940s. Keith Peterie and Ron Want (both life members) did an amazing job to rebuild keep patrols going and rebuild the member base. In the late 1960s the first Coolum Beach Nippers started under the name of the Coolum Darts. By 1980 the membership

changed for the better with the introduction of female members. The club now has close to 50% female membership across all sections.

and are now a vital part of the lifesaving rescue equipment. More recently we have seen jetskis, helicopters and drones added to the lifesaving armoury.

On the beach the Coolum Beach Surf Lifesaving club has maintained a proud record on zero lives lost between the flags. Despite the club has seen its share of tragedies. In 1948 the club lost it’s own Dick Lugge who tragically drowned while trying to rescue swimmers using the surfbelt in massive seas on boxing day. Over the years the lifesaving equipment has evolved from the original surf reel through to the IRB (rubber duckies) which were introduced in 1977

While a lot has changed over the years one thing has not changed and that is the dedication of the clubs volunteer members and the fact that the surf club is the heart of the Coolum Beach community. The Centenary Community Celebration is an opportunity for the local community to share the clubs rich history, look back over the last century and look forward to the next century of keeping Coolum Beach safe.

Enjoy the event from the best seat on the beach

LPG &TOW SAFETY LEARNING TO A CARAVAN Towing a caravan for the first time, or even the tenth time, can be pretty daunting. It requires skill and knowledge of not only how to handle your tow vehicle but also how to read the conditions and any emergency situations that may arise. The best advice, once you buy your caravan, is to do a course or towing clinic. You can find these for all levels of experience and knowledge from rookie to more experienced. However, if you are planning on a lap of Oz, or even just towing a van down the road for a week at the beach, then we strongly recommend you look into taking a course to not only preserve the safety of you and your family, but all of those who share the road with you. Towing a caravan isn’t just as simple as hooking up and

driving off, regardless of what Dave up the road says to you. Its knowing how to manage your load in urban areas, its knowing what to do when a sixty metre road train takes the wind from underneath you at 100km per hour and it’s knowing how to safely reverse into that tight caravan bay with 20 other caravans around you. If you know how to tow, but haven’t done so in a while, it’s also a great idea to refresh your skills. You need to make sure your

skills and knowledge are relevant to the caravan that you are towing. It’s a bit easier to tow a little camper trailer to a fifth wheeler. Towing courses are also a great way to ensure you have the necessary knowledge for knowing how to drive off road with your van, safe vehicle recovery, understanding tow ball options, chains, weight distribution, mirrors, radios, brakes, wheel bearings, jacks, tyres and anything else that is necessary for safely towing a caravan.

Contact your local Auto club like RACQ, RACV or NRMA, or speak to your caravan dealer and they will be able to point you in the right direction to find a course for your skill level. Before you think about towing a van you might also want to ensure you have the right drivers licence. If you got your licence before the end of 1996, you are entitled to drive a vehicle and trailer combination of up to 8,250kg Maximum Authorised Mass. If you got your licence from 1997, you are entitled to tow a car and caravan combination weighing 3,500kg or less. In addition you are able to drive a vehicle up to 3,500kg and tow a trailer up to 750kg behind it. Important for the grey nomads, when you turn 70 the rules change and you need to apply for permits to be able to keep towing. For everyone, if you want to tow a heavier caravan you need to pass an additional driving test. Its probably a good idea to check with your State’s Motor registry and make sure you are appropriately licensed for your set up.

Towing a caravan is a big deal and if you are new to it then its recommended to have a check list of all the things you need to do before you put your food on the accelerator to start moving. Have you done all your pre trip checks and servicing? Is everything closed and locked down? Are the legs up and the wheel chocks away? Are all your connectors and chains on? Have you checked your mirrors, and lights? Once you are on the road it is important to concentrate even more than driving when not towing. You need to make sure you are allowing extra space and be aware of the time needed for braking and accelerating.

It is more important now if you can to share the driving, or if you can’t have regular rest stops. Driving fatigued when towing is very unsafe. For many people caravanning means being out bush or on the wide open ride is why you are out there. However you need to share these roads with trucks. Be aware of trucks, they can push the caravan around and cause sway with the wind gusts. Just slow down. The other point of anxiety for many people new to towing a van is reversing. The best way to get rid of this anxiety is to practice it a lot in a non stressful environment and don’t rush. If possible, have someone standing outside to communicate directions. And not through a closed window where you can’t hear them. Once you are confident with towing, the world is your oyster. What are your best tips for towing a caravan?

Travelling on a budget

The number one question we get asked the most is ‘how much does travelling around Australia cost?’ Obviously, the answer varies quite significant from person to person, but WE travelled this beautiful country for an average of $500 per WEEK! There were two adults and two infants travelling in a 2010 Ford ranger and a 15ft caravan. This also includes car and life insurance and roadside assistance but doesn’t include van insurance or rego’s (as we paid these before we left). So how did we keep the costs down?

FREE CAMP/LOW COST CAMP WikiCamps was invaluable to us! Where we could (which is most places, but we did struggle on the coast from Sydney - Brisbane) we tried to find a free or low cost camp. What was best is we also found that a lot of these camps have a days’ worth of activities within them - bush walks, beaches, rivers etc which is a massive bonus. We have plenty of solar so that helped us with being able to be ‘off grid’ and something that is definitely worth investing in if you’re planning to free camp a lot. Obviously there are times when we needed or wanted to use caravan parks, it is definitely worth ringing around to see what prices are like and always ask if they have any deals on even if none are advertised - you’ll be surprised how many offer a discount! Also joining rewards programmes are beneficial.

PLAN MEALS Don’t go shopping hungry! Have a list of what you NEED and stick to it, it’s so easy to grab extra stuff as you go but try not to because it all adds up. Knowing what you’re going to have for each meal before heading into the supermarket makes the shopping so much easier and the spending so much lighter. Food/groceries was our biggest expense and we eat pretty much the same as we did at home without the ‘extras’.

PRE PREP FOOD Have lunch ready so you don’t get hungry and get tempted to stop at a bakery, fast food shops etc. We found having a fridge in the car also made this easier as we made sandwiches/wraps in the morning and then get them out when we were at a beach or park. Having snacks pre made in the car for the kids is a also lifesaver! TRY NOT TO DO EVERY ACTIVITY OUT THERE Its easy to want to see and do everything and of cause you’re on a trip of a lifetime so definitely tick of your bucket list must dos but remember there are plenty of beautiful things to do and see for absolutely free. If there is an activity you’re keen on doing look around for any coupons or deals on it, we always checked out Groupon for activities on sale around the area we were in.

AVOID LAUNDROMATS We were using laundromats for the first 6 weeks and spent a fortune just washing our clothes (having two little ones doesn’t help with the amount of washing we do). We invested in a Aldi twin tub washing machine which is brilliant but even if you don’t have or want a machine our advice is keep on top of the washing so you can hand wash small amounts at a time without it getting out of hand! MAINTAIN VEHICLE Check your vehicle! we checked our vehicle every morning before leaving to the next camp. Checking the oil and water and having a general look your engine bay and tyres could save you a massive expense if something that is an easy fix gets ignored and causes damage (i.e. low oil/low coolant).

It’s not always easy to keep to such a strict budget and of course we had weeks where we go over or we do a big trip like Fraser Island, Cape York, Stradbroke Island etc. Truthfully if we had more money to spend per week, we probably would have spent it, but this is to show that you can have your trip of a lifetime without massive spending’s! Safe travels, Bush’n it on budget.

Oh the places you’ll go….

As a parent, travel is the gift you give your children which they will benefit from for the long term. This is something Emily Brett has experienced first-hand. Emily is travelling Australia with her family, but this isn’t the first time she has done a lap of the land. Emily had her first experience living life on the road when she was the same age as her children are now. Emily said her parents were surfers and both interested in travelling, and in 1986, when Emily was four and her sister was three, they did a half lap around the West Coast, around the outside and through the middle of Australia. While many travelling families

these days travel in some sort of comfort, Emily and her family travelled in a Jayco Songbird towed by a green, chunky, HZ sedan which Emily says, “was definitely not a four-wheel drive. It had roof racks full of stuff, but we went everywhere in this set up”. Emily said, “even though I was four it had a huge impression on me and is actually the main reason I’m travelling now with my kids”. “I feel like I have a lot of memories that I’ve often referred to throughout my life and used as a reference point for lots of reasons why I am the way that I am”. When questioned on what some

of those memories are Emily said by doing this trip with her children she is finding a lot of those memories are now coming back to her. “Before this trip a lot of memories weren’t quite as tangible but I’m finding a lot of memories are now coming back as a sort of sense memories”. She said, “I have been to places on this trip and I have felt like I can recognise the environment. I can recognise things like the smell and the light, especially the light. The light in the outback and in coastal areas, especially in areas like in Cactus in South Australia, it’s a very unique light and I really remember that as a child”.

“I have been to places and felt like I’ve been here before and checked in with Mum and yep we had been there, it’s sort of like remembering a dream a couple of days after you’ve had it”. Emily said she is finding she is playing the same games with her children that she played while she was a child, she said, “I remember very clearly the games we played and when I go to play with my kids I’m saying things like, let’s pretend to make a fire, or potions out of different things you find, because I remember doing that on our trip”. She said she also has vivid memories of some of the people she met and the way she socialised as a child, “I remember having to be very confident and

just biting the bullet and saying my name’s Emily, what’s yours. I remember having to have the confidence to do those things”. “I remember there were some big milestones, like riding a bike without training wheels, swimming without assistance under water”. Emily said she had a particular memory come back to her recently while swimming at Karijini National Park in WA. “I was swimming in one of the water holes there and I remember now as a kid what the water tasted like in those freshwater pools, where I’m from the south you just don’t have that”. A psychologist would have a field day with these types of

memories and would probably describe them as visceral memories. While Emily spent six months travelling with her parents, she is on a twelve-month trek with her own children which will take them all the way around the outside of Australia. Emily said her childhood experiences were very nature based and she is trying to offer her own children a similar experience. “I’m very conscious of trying to give my kids a similar experience and not having lots of fancy toys, although they do have toys, but just trying to minimise things like IPads and access to screens and just trying to bring it back to

a simpler life and to just be as a family in the environment”. “I think kids are meant to be in nature, I think it’s the best thing you can do for them, especially my four year old, he is just trying everything and he is becoming resilient and I’ve noticed huge leaps and bounds in his confidence”. Emily said when she first floated the idea of travelling long term to husband Shane he was unfazed. Having also done his fair share of travelling the idea of packing up and going without a plan wasn’t a huge deal, however Emily said his concerns were more around the financial considerations.

“Shane works as a website developer and when I sold the idea to him to try and tap into the travelling website market and did some development on the road, and he just said if you can help me generate an income while we’re travelling then yes let’s go”. There aren’t many people who have the resources to travel long term without having an income and Emily says for people to hear stories about how other families manage it makes it seem more in reach for other people. She said, “when my parents did it they saved and saved and

that’s why it was a six month thing, but also things were way cheaper back then, and back then camps were pretty much free everywhere. These days I think you have to be a bit creative about how you make an income and I’m really interested now that we’re on the road because so many people are out there doing all these different things”. She said it’s not just online businesses, “there are people doing fly in fly out, there are nurses, teachers, tradies, there are so many opportunities, and having an online revenue is definitely a bonus but there are so many other ways to do things”.

“The other way is to not have a time restriction on things so you can slow down, stay in a place for a while get to know the community and generate work that way”. Emily does have some advice for families who are still sitting on the fence in deciding if they will embark on such an adventure. She said, “I would say that there will always be some unknowns when you do something like this and fear comes in but you can just look at the fear and see it as something that makes it more exciting, like the unknown and it is a complete leap of faith. Things are going to go wrong. You’re going to have car issues definitely, everyone does. You’re

probably going to worry about money at some point, you’re probably going to get lost, which we do all the time”. “Australia’s not a dangerous country, we are really lucky and there are lots of people doing it and everyone is so supportive everywhere you go.” “I just think the benefits of the adventure and all of the positive unknowns, the places you’re going to see, the experiences you are going to have, and the things you are going to teach your kids, have so much more weight than anything that is fear based”.

“I’ve already noticed from my own experiences from travelling in the past that you say, I’ll come back here, but you never do, and when you’ve got that opportunity to do something, you’ve just got to take it because you just don’t know, it’s a cliché, but you don’t know what’s going to happen in the future.” “I think the benefits for your kids is one massive thing but also the benefits for yourself, for your family . and just because you’re a parent it doesn’t mean you can’t have an adventurous life, your life is not over, you don’t have to put all of your own desires aside, and your kids are going to love sharing adventure with you”.

10 WAYS KIDS CAN MAKE FRIENDS ON THE ROAD HOW TO FIND FRIENDS WHEN TRAVELING

Finding friends while on the road is so super important when you’re traveling with kids, very much so for an only child, and especially an only child traveling with just her mum!

02

HOTELS, RESORTS AND KIDS CLUBS

Emmie needs friends to play with and to enjoy kids games and kids fun while we are backpacking through Asia. And when we find good ones and Emmie’s having fun, we stick around for longer (another advantage of never having plans!). One thing I have realised over time is that needing friends her own age was more my worry than hers. She has definitely loved being with her mum, and friends are a bonus, not a necessity. That said, it’s important to have kid time and she has definitely had a lot of it. I know a lot of parents worry about their kids making friends when traveling and it’s really not that difficult, so please don’t let it bother you. There are a few ways we make sure Em spends time with kids her age. Here’s how we do it:

01

OTHER TRAVELING FAMILIES There are so many other families traveling either on short holidays or long term and you’ll find them along the way. We met two wonderful families at Lazy Beach in Koh Rong Samloem in Cambodia… there were six kids all running around the beach, swimming, playing on rope swings, making up concerts and playing practical jokes. We loved it so much we extended our stay for an extra five days. We are still in touch with our wonderful Koh Rong friends and hopefully we will meet up again one day. We loved this island and there’s a variety of accommodation – you can check out all the places to stay here.

Kids Clubs can be the best break you’ll ever have and are great for making friends When Emmie needs kids and I need some downtime we book into hotels or resorts with Kids Clubs. Often she makes little friends to play with but sometimes it can backfire if there aren’t any around. But she still enjoys having time to play craft and have all the attention of the staff at Kids Club and I go into kids club with her – especially if we are at a Shangri-La, they always have awesome climbing and playing gyms – and we play together and she will do activities with the staff while I do a bit of work or lay by the pool for a bit. Our favourite Shangri-La is the Tanjung Aru in Kota Kinabalu, Borneo Malaysia. It has a fabulous pool, waterslides and so much for kids to enjoy – you can check it out here and read our review here. At the Sun Siyam Iru Fushi in the Maldives Emmie made a lovely little friend, Vienna, and I met her parents and we all had dinner together and a wine tasting…fun times. This is a great resort – check out prices and reviews here.

03

LOOK UP LOCAL FACEBOOK GROUPS

• you get a break • they can catch up on schooling We love Greenshoots and would always go back if we had the chance. Emmie made such lovely friends there and it was a really fabulous time.

05

MEET UP WITH HOLIDAYING FRIENDS/VISIT FRIENDS

When we went to Chiang Mai I found a few expat mum groups online, and some lovely ladies and their kids who were keen to play. One had a craft day at her home that Emmie went to (while I worked in their loungeroom) and two other ladies met up with us for swimming catch ups. They knew of weekly slack-lining in the park that we went to and other fun activities for kids. We went to a restaurant with a huge kids pay area and just had a really nice time. They were so welcoming and we really loved it – until we decided to take off for Hoi An, Vietnam and international school.

04

We did both of these! We were lucky enough to catch up with some good friends who visited Hoi An at the same time we were there and we made sure to visit friends who were living in Saigon. All of them have children so Emmie got to catch up with her buddies and make new friends too.

INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

06

International school can be a little expensive but when you enrol your child in one where the cost of living is low it’s kind of justifiable I reckon. We did two stints at, Vietnam. The first was for one month and then we went back for three months. International school is great for many reasons: • you can enrol your child for a short-term at many schools (one month) • they make friends

Just like at home parks overseas are crowded with kids. Emmie had such a great day running around the Jardin du Luxembourg with a Korean friend she made that day. They had such a lovely time together and after days of roaming around (and loving) Paris with me it was so nice for her to run around the park and all the play equipment with a buddy.

PARKS AND PLAY AREAS

to make paper planes and some even patiently played pool with her. Hostels are so chill, they’re awesome places to stop because there are lots of people around, talking and sharing their adventures – we get lots of tips and advice whenever we’re at hostels. They’re not like what they were back in the day and most have family rooms.

10 07

ARRANGE TO MEET UP WITH OTHER TRAVELING FAMILIES VIA FB/ONLINE There are lots of traveling family and world schooling Facebook pages that you should join when you’re traveling where you can share experiences and advice. You’ll meet families who are travelling and often your paths will cross. We’ve met up with a few like Sophie and her hubby and four kids @justsix_backpacks who we spent time with in Sri Lanka. So good!

08

LOCAL KIDS Emmie played with local kids in front of the cafes at Angkor Wat, at the beach in Bohol, Philippines and really all over the place while we’ve been traveling. Kids are fabulous, they don’t need to speak the same language to be able to communicate and have a good time.

09

HOSTELS Hostels are awesome for the whole family, we stayed in lots and Emmie made friends everywhere – and not just with kids. In China young travellers taught her card tricks and how

BE OPEN – YOU CAN MAKE FRIENDS ANYWHERE Most of all, just be open! We’ve made friends everywhere, and some we just adore and will definitely see again like the awesome expat family we met in a restaurant in Siem Reap (Try Me – look it up, it’s divine). We just started chatting and then went to putt putt golf, and had a few days out, and we caught up when we returned to Siem Reap. We will see them again too! And the family we befriended who owned a cafe in Coron, Philippines. We went to their church on Sunday and the kids had a great time. There are lots of opportunities for kids to make friends and play when you’re traveling. It’s also a time to further build that wonderful family bond that you don’t get to tend as much as you’d like when you’re rushing about with work/school and the routine of life at home. Most importantly, just chill, let it happen and get ready to make lots of new friends from around the world. Kids and adults!!
