Northern Territory

Garma Festival

2 August – 5 August – Arnhem Land

The ancient sound of the Yidaki (didjeridu) is a call to all people to come together in unity; to gather for the sharing of knowledge and culture; to learn from and listen to one another. Each August, the Yidaki call announces the start of Garma, the largest and most vibrant annual celebration of Yolngu (Aboriginal people of northeast Arnhem Land) culture. It is heard at Gulkula, near Nhulunbuy in north-east Arnhem Land, as about 2,000 Indigenous and nonindigenous Australians and international visitors gather for the annual Garma Festival. Garma is a Yolngu word that describes a ‘two-way learning process”. Yolngu culture is one of the oldest living cultures on earth, stretching back over 40,000 years, and the Garma Festival is a celebration of that Yolngu cultural inheritance www.yyf.com.au 2019 Rotary Henley on Todd Regatta 17 August

Talk about quirky?? - It’s A boat race with a unique difference - on the dry sands of the Todd River. In fact - it is the worlds ONLY dry river bed boating regatta. The Henley on Todd Regatta is the most iconic event in the Australian outback, mainly because of its totally unique nature. Its a boat race - without any sign of water. Its a day of fun where teams and individuals race ‘boats’, in the dry bed of the Todd River in outback Alice Springs. Have fun and enjoy the hilarity as you watch seemingly sane people race in bottomless ‘eights’, ‘Oxford tubs’, ‘rowing 8’s’ and ‘yachts’ through the deep coarse sand. Participants get crafty and build and race their own boats, or we provide all boats and equipment so you can come and join in the fun.

The event is the major annual fundraiser for the three local Rotary clubs in Alice Springs.

The Wandering Osteo

Fiona Hooper is travelling Australia with her husband Wade and their daughters aged three and five years. You might think well that’s not unusual, there are thousands of travelling families around Australia as we speak. However, like many travelling families Fiona and Wade had to think about how they would fund their travelling lifestyle.

relies heavily on social media and word of mouth and voila the Wandering Osteo is a reality. I spoke to Fiona about life on the road after leaving their home in Mildura in February and making this their reality. She said, “Our life is winging it, it now comes down to how long we can survive each other’s company in such a small space”.

Fiona is an Osteopath, a profession which on the surface doesn’t seem like it would be easily transportable. But that’s where a bit of creativity and a leap of faith come in.

Fiona explained that the concept of being able to continue to practice while being on the move came to her because previous work experience in mining town, Roxby Downs in South Australia, meant that she had a transient client base already.

Fiona has set up a clinic inside her caravan and

“I was living in Roxby Downs which is a very

transient town, most people aren’t from there, they are from other places in South Australia”. Fiona’s family spent a lot of time travelling through South Australia where she said because of her Roxby experience she already had patients all over South Australia. “There are different reasons why it came about but the whole caravan concept came from a few of these patients who were begging me to come and visit, and one day it just dawned on me that I should, and a few other things evolved and so we decided on the caravan”. “In South Australia I just had a patient in most of the locations that we’ve gone to and they just spread the word, and nothing beats word of mouth”. “In terms of them being return patients, I feel like I do enough in one treatment to get them back on track and if they needed a lot of follow up, I either wouldn’t do it or I would stay for a lot longer. I am also trying to encourage people that they don’t need to rely on the hands on if they are given the right information and I want them to take ownership of their own health”. Fiona has a special interest in women’s health and has an online support group for women to tap into information and advice. She said, “women can join and I can be their Osteo in their pocket, whenever they need, 24/7”. Fiona said while she was in Roxby Downs most of her patients had mining related injuries, and since being on the road she said, “it seems to be a lot of farming related issues now, which is a lot of chronic pain. A lot of older guys who are putting up with pain. I know farming is very stressful on their body and it may not be something they can completely get rid of but I can treat them and give them tools to try and alleviate their pain at home”. “I am also seeing a lot of people from country netball and football clubs. That’s pretty popular in the country. A lot of Mum netballers, wanting to get back into it after having babies”.

While travelling, Fiona said she is loving sharing the concept of Osteo to people who have never heard of it before and has in some towns taken the opportunity to speak at football clubs about how an Osteo can help their wellness. “I’m not an ambassador for Osteo in Australia but I feel like I’m doing it anyway”.

After South Australia though, Fiona and her family are now well into their sojourn into Western Australia, where she doesn’t have the security of patients already lined up. She said this is where things like social media help. “I’ve already had a few people ask when I will be coming through their towns after they’ve made contact through social media and offered to help promote me visiting, so that’s been lovely. I’ve also got a few friends in different places who might not be patients but people who can help put the word out as well”.

Fiona said she is also making contact with other professionals in towns she visits who can take on the role of continuing care for some of her patients. Regional towns across Australia rarely have access to services such as Osteopathy so someone passing through who is able to offer such a service is usually very welcome. “They might not have practitioners in the towns but they definitely have professionals like Personal Trainers and gyms, so I’m trying to talk to people in the towns that can help me spread the word and I can help them with some of the people that they’re training who might be in a bit of pain”. “I like empowering people so they can take ownership beyond my hands being on their body and they can help themselves, they don’t have to

rely on people coming to their towns to help them. Definitely we have an impact but it’s a team effort”. Fiona said she has found the most support in towns that don’t have access to permanent practitioners because those people needing services have to pay to travel somewhere else to access it. “It costs people a lot of money to head to a town to receive treatment”. Fiona said the opportunity to treat people who don’t have access to services like what she offers has been really rewarding already in the short time they’ve been travelling. “It sounds cliché but it’s so nice to get the feedback that you’ve made an impact on someone’s life that’s been dealing with pain for so long and they weren’t really aware that they didn’t need to put up with it a lot of the time”.

Being on the road can present it’s challenges and quirky experiences and Fiona said she is getting used to treating people in some unusual places. “One lady couldn’t get to town and so I just pulled off the road, her house was 200 metres off the road on a farm and I just pulled into her house and treated her in her backyard”.

“I’ve also treated in playgrounds, we had to stop anyway for the kids to have a run around. I’ve said, I’m not stopping in town but if you want a treatment at lunch time I’m happy to treat you, I’ve also treated at service stations, things like that”. “I try and be open when people reach out, I can’t go to everybody’s house but that’s all part of the fun of it as well”.

Fiona said she has now embraced the crazy life, “I’m really enjoying the unknown of every day and just going with the flow. There are days where we’ll see and do things that I never would have expected and couldn’t have even planned to do and that’s just so much fun”.

“I’m also loving the simple life, and realising you don’t need much at all”. “I wouldn’t go back now to what I was doing, not that I didn’t like it but I just like the fact that every day is different and it’s pretty cool to be able to help so many people that would never have even heard of Osteo".

CONNECTING TO THE SUN—IDEAS TO HELP 1. Welcome and gives thanks to the sun each morning. Sun permitting, go outside and spend a few minutes in the early morning sun. Give thanks for the sun and welcome its gifts of warmth, light and healing into your life. 2. Get your vitamin D level assessed. If you haven’t done so recently, get a blood test to assess your vitamin D level (‘serum 25 OH’ or ‘hydroxyvitamin D3’). This is the first step to determining your vitamin D health and could literally save your life. 3. Let the sun heal you. Skin Conditions: If you have a cut, rash, skin infection or even a condition such as eczema or psoriasis, try some ‘middle of the day’ summer sun exposure on the site for a few minutes each day. Spending time in the ocean or having salt water baths can also be of benefit for such conditions. Eye Health: To improve your general eye health, get some indirect early morning sunlight through your eyes whenever you can, and at any time of the day look towards the sun with your eyes ‘closed’. Lightly massage the eyelids and around your eyes at the same time to help stimulate

your Colour perception. Mood lifter/Emotion balancer: If you are feeling a little down, heavy or negative, where conditions allow it, be sure to get adequate sun exposure, both in the early morning and during the middle of the day. Even if there is no sunlight as such in the early morning, being exposed to the natural UV light will still be helpful. 4. Get regular, small (safe) sunlight exposure whenever possible i) Use the ‘shadow rule’ In order to get sun exposure for optimal vitamin D synthesis, use the shadow rule. When your shadow is ‘shorter’ than you are, expose as much skin as you can for an appropriate time period (see ii. below). For most parts of Australia, these times will be during the midday hours—10am to 2pm—in the warmer months of the year. If you work indoors, be sure to get outside at lunchtime for some direct sun exposure.

As a general guide, ‘expose your hands, face and arms to one-third of the amount that produces a faint redness of your skin most days’.24 If you are vitamin D deficient, look to ‘expose as much of your skin as possible (don’t scare the neighbours) to the point just before the faintest pink colouring’. That is, if you ‘pinken’ in 30 minutes, expose yourself for approximately 20 - 25 minutes each side of your body. If you ‘pinken’ in 10 minutes, sun for 7 minutes each side.25 5. The importance of a mini break

It’s August.. for most of Australia it’s been a cold winter and the flush of public holidays that we enjoy in the first half of the year are well and truly forgotten. However, now is possibly the most important time to think about taking a couple of extra days off work and booking a end of winter.. just past mid-year mini-break. It really could be just what your mental and physical health is craving. Disconnecting with the day to day is essential to preventing burnout at work and at home, and many health experts applaud the impacts of a long weekend away. It can help to

maintain positivity, boost immune health and also boost productivity when you are back at work. On top of all the health benefits, mini-breaks are also a great way to take a break without breaking the bank. While a longer holiday is what most people crave, the option of several shorter breaks is what many Australians are now doing in order to get their much needed time out. Sydney based Tourism Academic David Beirman recently told the ABC that despite now more than 56 percent of Australians now owning a passport, he believes more

Australians are going on shorter holidays today than in the past. He said, “that’s reflected by the product being offered by a lot of tour operators and travel agents and the online community.” “Rather than taking several weeks leave at once people are taking four to five days instead.” “In many cases, it’s because there’s sometimes concerns about job security, and it’s interesting because we’re supposed to be living in an age where there’s more leisure time than ever. But, in fact, most Australians are working harder than they ever have,” he said.

So it’s established that it’s necessary to take a mini-break, the next decision is what sort of holiday should you take? 2018 figures from Tourism Research Australia show that national overnight camping, caravan and RV trips reached 12.3 million for the year, marking the first time overnight and short trips have exceeded 12 million in a 12 month period, and total nights spent caravanning and camping around the country increased by 6.5 percent to reach a record 52.8 million nights.

Taking a short break in a caravan and RV makes sense on many levels. It gives the perfect opportunity to disconnect from the day to day, reconnects you with nature and is affordable.

keys to the person hiring. Caravan and Camping Hire are there to assist with all the logistical and insurance necessities but when it comes to the actual hire vehicle this is a direct relationship.

But what if you don’t actually own a caravan, camper trailer or RV, or don’t have room to store one? There are so many opportunities to rent now.

This means that there are caravans and campers for hire all over Australia, and it also gives owners an opportunity to get a return from their investment when they are not using it – kind of like a mobile B & B.

Caravan and Camping Hire Australia are a peer to peer hire company. This So where will you be heading on your means that the owner of the caravan next mini-break? is the person that hands over the

Top 10 reasons why you need to take a mini-break! See more places each year Lots of short breaks each year to a different place is a great way to explore more destinations. The convenience of hiring an RV anywhere in Australia means you could fly and pick up a hire vehicle all ready for your next destination.

Busy short breaks can feel like a longer holiday Three or four days in a new place is a lot of time for exploring or relaxing. Being out of your normal routine can often make the days seem longer than usual and jam packed with quality hours.

Only take carry on luggage Hiring a caravan or RV will mean that it will come with just about everything you need so all you need to fly with is your carry on luggage, saving time getting through the airport and thinking about what to pack.

Planning the break Planning a holiday is sometimes just as much fun as going on holiday and if you have lots of short breaks that’s lots more opportunity to think about where you want to go, what activities you want to do and how you are getting there!

It’s easier to disconnect on a short break Many of us are permanently connected to devices and our careers, and at times, taking a holiday can be a mammoth task in planning so that everything in our normal lives still ticks along while we are away. A shorter break can be easier to organise and therefore less stressful in the planning stages, making the whole experience more pleasant. And then when you sit back down at work you aren’t battling through thousands of emails and getting your stress levels back to where they were pre-break.

You will be more productive Experts are always telling us we need to take regular breaks at work for example, not eating your lunch at your desk and going for a walk. This increased level of productivity also transpires for those people who take regular times away from the office altogether. A mini-break is the perfect way to boost the mental performance.

Its more affordable Short breaks are less expensive that a big overseas holiday, obviously. A short break in a caravan is one of the

best inexpensive holiday options across Australia – even if you combine it with a flight somewhere and pick up a rental RV, you are self contained and the master of your destination.

It’s easier to find someone to look after pets Anyone can tell you the stress of leaving fur babies when you go on holidays for longer time periods. However, with a mini-break, if you can’t take your pet with you then it’s far easier to find someone to look after them for a few days over a few weeks.

Mental clarity The long winding road is the best place to find mental clarity. Being lost in thoughts while exploring the great unknown is the best time to rethink priorities and make those life decisions you don’t have space for at home.

Its easier to get time off An employer is far more likely to give you a couple of days off work than two months for a holiday. This means you can go anytime of the year, or multiple times of the year without it being an interruption to anyone else’s productivity.

FOOD FOR THE MIND

As a chef and food junkie my knowledge and memory of food surprises me. I read a recipe, get taught something on the job and it sticks, forever. Many moons ago when I did my apprenticeship as a chef, I qualified 6 months early, before everyone else and was a straight A student. However, the rest of my schooling days were very, very different. Dropping out of high school at a very young age was, quite frankly all for the best. My grades were shocking and my theory learning skills certainly not my strong point. I did however go on to receive a qualification at something that has not only carried me through life but has become my passion. Not only have I continued to learn, as I’ve said many times before the knowledge of food never stops giving. I have also passed on my passion and knowledge onto my apprentices over the years and to students in my cooking classes. Often get a giggle if any of my teachers in school knew I have been holding my own classes. So anyways, as my life has progressed, so has my need and want for more knowledge. More so than being able to cook a dinner service for 200

plus. Going into management of restaurants, to now owning my own. These years taught me a hell of a lot and the knowledge continues to grow and I absolutely love it. Keeping the mind sharp and on the ball, I believe is what not only keeps us young, but also essential to not growing too old. I came across a course on line, super brain quest course. How to improve your memory and I decided to sign up and the journey so far has been fricken amazing. Not that I would change my life for anything, it has been and is an amazing ride but some of these skills I’ve been learning, if I’d known back then; Wow, who knows. One of the classes is about super brain foods and as I’ve heard from some of my fellow students that out of the list of 10 superfoods, turmeric and walnuts are two that people don’t like, or don’t know what to do with them. I’m not a huge walnut fan, eating them on their own, but in salads or dipped in dark chocolate, another Super brain food. Not to mention stuffing’s and here we go pesto, they work a treat. So, lets feed this amazing brain we have.

TURMERIC, WALNUT AND LEMON PESTO Ingredients • • • • • • • •

• • • •

1 cup walnuts 50g peeled fresh turmeric ¼ cup grated Parmesan ½ cup olive oil 1 tsp fresh chopped garlic 1 tsp celery salt ½ tsp ground black pepper 2tbsp fresh Lemon juice, more might be nedded depending on taste 1 tsp Sea salt, more might be needed, depending on taste 2 tbsp fresh chopped flat leaf parsley 1 tsp Greek oregano (optional) 1 tsp sumac (optional)

Method Place walnuts, turmeric, olive oil, garlic, celery salt and black pepper in a food processor and blend to a paste. Transfer to a bowl and add chopped parsley and stir through. Salt and lemon juice, I think are best to add a little, taste and use what’s required for your taste buds. As it is a pesto it needs to pack a fair punch. It will be added to other dishes, generally not just eaten on its own, although I have been known to have a cheeky spoon full. Personally, I like it quite zesty, the lemon really works for me. So, season to your own taste. Sumac and Greek oregano are optional, taste good, but won’t make or break the dish. Sumac is a zesty berry, the purple spice you see on dips in a Lebanese restaurant, a fabulous spice. If you don’t know it, buy some, trust me you will become friends. I prefer a Greek or Mexican oregano and if you can find it in a deli still on the branch, bloody fantastic. Once again, trust me.

So, this works so well as a condiment to meats, chicken and seafood. Fantastic as a pasta dish, just add a bit of the pasta water and check the seasoning. Under seasoned pesto pasta, huge pet hate. It also works well as a stuffing seasoning, on an antipasto platter, with cheese.

Let the imagination go wild. Last night I had it on rice crackers with sardines, so good and extra brain food. Tasty, healthy and so versatile, go for it and as always if you’re not sure ask me. Always happy to help a fellow foodie.

5 Reasons to own a Folding Solar Blanket Compact Store your folding blanket in your rear drawers or even under the seat. Folding down to a size of a newspaper, the solar blanket doesn’t take up valuable space in your vehicle!

Lightweight Solar blankets are incredibly light weight. Our 180w solar blanket for example weighs in at just 5kg! Compared to your traditional folding panels there is a significant weight difference. This can be crucial deciding factor for caravans and 4WDs where weight limits are enforced.

High Yielding Quality blankets, like our 120w and 180w Baintech Folding Solar Blankets - are made from the most efficient and high yielding SunPower Monocrystalline Solar Cells.

Versatile Mount on your roof rack, roll out at camp, place it on your awning, or windscreen. Where you position your solar blanket is virtually unlimited! Chase the sun and place it where you can achieve the best yield and sunstrike for optimal solar output.

Durable There’s a reason why we’ve called our 180w blanket the Baintuff 180w Blanket. Folding solar blankets are far more durable than your glass folding panels.

Monocrystalline vs. Polycrystalline Monocrystalline solar panels have the highest efficiency rates since they are made from the highest-grade silicon. Polycrystalline have a lower efficiency rating compared to Monocrystalline and cost less.

Amps In Vs. Amps Out You want to ensure you have adequate amps going into your batteries. The more you are drawing the more you need to replace. It can be a common error with users drawing too many amps, and not replacing those amps with an adequate charging source, resulting in a flat battery. A great way to measure your amps and watts is by using the Baintech Watt Meter and Power Analyzer. Once connected and power is flowing through, the watt mater will give you real time readings of: Current (Amps/A) Voltage (Volts/V) Power (Watts/W)Â

life expectancy, which means you need 120 amp hours of battery capacity. Bainbridge Technologies are your 12volt and power solution specialists, stocking everything from solar blankets to power sockets. Contact them for all your 12v solutions for camping, 4WD, RV and marine!

How many watts will I need? Firstly, calculate the power draw from all your accessories such as lights, fridges, phone chargers etc. If your total draw comes to 5 amps when everything is connected, a good rule of thumb is to double that for the charging source, i.e. 10 amps. The solar blanket thus needs to output at least 10 amps for the duration of the sunlight hours. A rule of thumb for converting amps to watts for solar blankets is to multiply by 20, i.e. in this 10amps x 20 = a 200W solar blanket would be a good option. Secondly, it is a good idea to make sure your battery capacity suits the scenario as well. If you are drawing 5 amps continuously out of the batteries during nighttime, say 6pm – 6am, you will need 12 hrs x 5 amps = 60 amp hours of usable capacity. If you are using deep cycle batteries, you should only draw them down to 50% of their capacity to ensure good

The first thing most people do when they purchase a major asset like a car, or a house is organise insurance. But what about your caravan or camper trailer? Caravan insurance can be confusing! Online forums are often abuzz with questions and information about different types of

insurance, however like most insurance policies, caravan insurance is not a one size fits all solution. The best advice is to do your own research, dependent on your own set of circumstances. It gets even more confusing trying to decipher the different rules in different states around Australia. However, your car’s third party insurance should generally cover injuries you cause to other people while your

caravan is attached to your car. Depending on the type of policy you have it may also cover third party property damage. However, if your caravan or trailer is not attached to your car, or is damaged or stolen, your car insurance may not cover this. So what sort of insurance is available for your caravan? We asked Let’s Go Caravan Insurance some questions about this.

Let’s Go Caravan Insurance originates from a partnership between NM Insurance and The Caravan Industry Association of Australia and a broad understanding of what caravanners look for in an insurance policy. Let’s Go Caravan Insurance provides cover for camper trailers, caravans, pop tops and Class B and C motorhomes. They say they aim to give all caravanners, whether they only use their caravans on the

weekend, or are doing a ‘lap of Oz’, as much information as possible about the types of caravan insurance available to them. Let’s Go Caravan Insurance say that as with any type of insurance, it depends on your use of your caravan or camper trailer and what level of insurance cover you need for your own situation. This is particularly relevant with the growing number of people who travel Australia in a caravan.

Caravanners might feel confused with exactly what they need with regard to insurance of their caravan as an asset, as well as the contents of the caravan. Here is some general information from Let’s Go Caravan Insurance that can be used as a starting point: - If your caravan is attached to your car and smashes into someone else’s car while you are driving, your liability to them is likely to be covered by your third party car insurance.

The Standard cover option is generally preferred by people who use their caravan for weekend trips and an occasional longer trip. While the Prestige cover option is designed for people who spend more time in their caravans.

Let’s Go Caravan Insurance recommend considering the extras included on caravan insurance policies when deciding which policy to buy. For example, their Prestige cover option, includes $5000 of contents cover as well as some cover for lifestyle items such as binoculars, fishing equipment, photography equipment, and mobile phones.

In addition, a big consideration for the growing number of people travelling with their pets, is the ability to have emergency pet coverage included in caravan insurance. Let’s Go Caravan Insurance say it is important for people to check whether extra items like this are included in their cover. The best advice when considering caravan insurance, as with all insurance, is to shop

around. Speak to a few insurers and see what they offer and whether it meets your individual needs. Let’s Go Caravan Insurance say they are happy to provide information about their products to anyone either online or over the phone. After all, you really don’t want to be caught out without the right cover in place on your holiday!

Backyard to Backpack Many of us here are already travelling families, in whatever iteration your family is made up of, mostly around Australia. We all recognise that the time we spend with our families, and our children is precious. For many of us also, we’ve made a decision that high pressure, high earning careers are not filling our buckets and so we’ve opted for stripped back minimalistic lifestyles that are more emotionally fulfilling. Evie Farrell also made this decision. Evie is a solo mum and was working long hours in Sydney in a corporate job, while her six year old daughter was being cared for by other people before

and after school.

and her new book – Backyard to Backpack.

It was the realisation that she needed something to change that led Evie to the decision to take the step that many of us have also taken.

Evie said she made the decision to change their lifestyle because she simply wasn’t happy with the situation as it was.

She rented her house and sold most of her material possessions, packed a backback and with Emmie began a lifetime of adventure, travelling and experiencing the world.

She said, “I struggled with the fact that I was sitting behind a desk in a building in the city, and Emmie was sitting behind a desk at school in the suburbs and we weren’t spending any time together”.

Evie, and her now nine year old daughter Emmie, have now been travelling the world since Emmie was six years old.

“I’m a solo parent and have been since Emmie was quite young, I loved my job but it was long days and I didn’t get time with Emmie and I couldn’t get the balance right”.

I spoke to Evie recently about some of her and Emmie’s experiences

The decision to travel was one where Evie saw an opportunity to spend time with her daughter and she chose Asia to start. She said, “I had some savings and realised the only way I could spend this really precious time with her was to rent out our house and to go up to Asia, where it’s really easy to get around, it’s cheap to live, and Emmie could learn about the world outside the suburbs where she was growing up”. “We could learn together and explore together and have all

these amazing experiences together, that we wouldn’t be able to at home because we didn’t have the time and I also thought it was really important to open up her mind at a young age to different cultures and religion and, and she’d also have a greater appreciation for the life she has at home because there is so much poverty and different ways of living overseas”. “Kids get so much out just being with their parents everyday. You can’t put a value on that and being exposed to different cultures and

religion and life outside of the sameness of home is invaluable”. Evie said there is an expectation placed on us as a society to do things like go to university, buy a house, get married and have children that many people don’t question. She said, “I feel like we are set on a path from a young age, which I personally didn’t question, but there is so much more out there and you have to take that step to discover it and it’s the most incredible thing.

“You get so caught up in work and having to work to pay for the things that you need or want because that’s the path we’re on. Once you take the time and realise there’s more out there and look and move sideways, whether it’s for a month or a year or for as little time as you can afford, but just doing that makes a huge difference”. She said travel is one of the best ways to get these experiences. “Spend time with your kids every single day, learning together and having these new experiences together its so much more than life and routine”. For many travelling families and those wanting to take the step it feels like a leap of faith and can be an incredibly daunting decision to make. Evie said though she didn’t feel like changing their lifestyle was a particularly brave thing to

do but said it is brave to make the decision. “The brave part is making the decision. It takes a lot of courage to say this isn’t really working and I want to find out what else there is”. She said once this decision was made and they began their travels those fears and difficulties melted away. She said, “For me once we left everything was easy. I walked into Departures, and through Customs and Immigration in the airport, and once I got through there, there was nothing. I didn’t have to worry about going to work, paying the mortgage, or paying bills, or doing the shopping and cleaning. We were just free”. Of their travels so far Evie said

there have been some incredible experiences and a few that really stick out. One such experience was when Evie and Emmie joined a group and camped on the Great Wall of China. Evie said, “we had to hike through the scrub and forest up to this deserted watchtower and Emmie and I put our tent up on the top of watchtower and it was this incredible atmosphere there”. “It was one of those things that I talk about all the time and it’s that shared experience, and having that experience with your child of the first time you do something together is really special, and those moments just sitting there and Em felt it too, and we just had this most incredible feeling being up there”.

Evie said another stand out experience was travelling on the Blue Train in Sri Lanka. She said, “we were sitting in the doorway of the train and going past tea plantations and waterfalls and forests and the weeds whipping our feet as we went along with the beat of the carriage on the tracks”. Evie said it’s often not the activity of something that makes it stand out for her as a favourite experience but it’s the feeling of a shared moment in time. She said, “I think the common theme through of all my favourite things has been where Em and I have had some kind of stillness together, just appreciating where we are, and what we have, because we do know how fortunate we are to be able to do this”. Evie said as Australian’s we really are in a very fortunate position. “Here in Australia we are very blessed that many of us are able to travel, so we should take that opportunity at recognising we are quite privileged and I think that puts a responsibility on you to do something with that and use those opportunities”. Evie said if she could give anyone thinking about travelling with children any advice its this. “Just do it!” “Absolutely just do it. The hardest part will be making the decision to go and packing up. People will throw all these things at you and say, what about schooling, what if something terrible happens, what if you can’t get a job when you get back”.

She said, “You just have to brush them aside and really think about all the positive things that will come from spending time with your family, together, every day”

History of Ozcape Campers Pty Ltd The idea to start the production of Slide-On campers in Australia under the name of Ozcape Campers Pty Ltd was born in 2004, when two couples who just emigrated from Germany a few years earlier met. One of the partners had a professional background as cabinetmaker with extensive experience in manufacturing first class custom-built furniture and caravan reconstruction and the other, a professional

mechanical engineer had years of experience in developmental research into the construction and repair of recreational vehicles. This proved to be a perfect combination of skills to make a difference in the Australian RV industry. The plan was to manufacture Slide-Ons in Australia with an innovative design, technically state-of-the-art and at a level of quality that would reflect their maker’s German descent.

End of 2004 Ozcape Campers Pty Ltd was founded. In 2005 followed the design, development and production of first prototypes which after rigorous and successful testing resulted in the launch of the first Ozcape Slide-On to the market in March 2006. The fresh looking design with its European appeal and spacious layout was not only very well received by the RV market, but also awarded the title of “Runner Up” in a major RV magazine’s “Slide-On of the Year” competition.

That was in 2007, when Ozcape Campers P/L was only in its second year and the brand was still very little known. One of the founding couples parted with the company which is still today remaining under the leadership of Joe and Marion Ried.

Sunsets over the rippling water. There’s just something about beach camping that calms the soul and induces feelings of wellness, motivates healthy living and screams ‘minimalism’ all at once. For those travelling full time, it’s not often you hit an accommodation jackpot along a coastline with beautiful beaches to spend your days at and lay your head at night for around the same price as a daily large caramel-latte with almond milk and perhaps a marshmallow or two!!

What if I told you that you could have your pick of 19 different camps along the Yorke Peninsula’s coastline over a WHOLE WEEK for that same $50??!! These council run camps are scattered all along the peninsula, most with their own toilets and bins that are regularly serviced by council. We snapped up a permit for a week to explore some of the Yorke’s hotspots and enjoyed ourselves so much we extended our stay (and permit) for almost a month!

THE CAMP SITES The 19 designated camp sites vary in seclusion and are all transferable on the one permit. They showcase some of the most beautiful scenic coastal areas, and are easily accessible by caravanners. Their locations within the Yorke peninsula are as follows: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Parara Wattle Point Goldsmith Beach Mozzie Flat Sturt Bay Foul Bay & Foul Bay Boat Ramp Daly Head Gleeson Landing Swincer Rocks Gravel Bay Burner Beach Len Barker Reserve Port Minlacowie Barker Rocks Wautaltee Beach

• Tiparra Rocks • The Bamboos • The Gap We recommend choosing a ‘base’ site for a good week while you explore everything the Yorke has to offer. Some of the points of interest we ventured to were the Cape Spencer Lighthouse, Innes National Park, and Point Turton for some jetty jumping and pontoon swimming. If you’re like us and travel with a boat, you’ll find some incredible fishing spots around the coastline but just be sure to keep your eye on the wind predictions, as the water turned from glass to chop extremely quickly a few times for us. For those keen fishermen (and women) without a boat, you’ll still have plenty of places to wet your line. A well-known hotspot particularly for squid is off the jetty at Point Turton. Just be sure to get there early as the jetty fills up very quickly!!

ENTICING BEACHES There were a few long days spent exploring our surrounds – and to this day we are STILL learning of new places we missed while we were there! We found the most EPIC sand dunes at Daly Heads Beach providing HOURS of fun (and exercise) for the boys. If you do visit this beach be sure to expect the ‘thigh-burn’ that comes with the flights of stairs back to your car from the beach! I was grateful the day was accident- free as the speed in which the kids were hooning down the dunes made my stomach churn in anticipation of a tumble - these kids surely keep us on our toes!! Our boys favourite beach in the area would have to have been Berry Bay Beach – a surf beach that gave them a reason to pull out their boogie boards. We all spent hours here, swimming, snorkelling, walking along the rocks and catching waves into shore on the kids boards. The beach was unmanned when we were there – so be sure to refresh your water safety before you go – or check for times the lifeguards are on duty. Our overall favourite family ‘thrills’ of the Yorke consisted of jetty jumping at Point Turton and being towed behind the tinnie at Burner’s Beach on the boogie boards.

GETTING ACTIVE We spent so much of our time outdoors walking, sand-dune boarding and swimming during our stay, and had a great fix of ‘Vitamin Sea’! It has incredible healing properties!! If a steady walk along your beach camping site, or frolicking in the ocean isn’t enough to get your heart pumping, you could always give the ‘Walk The Yorke’ track a go. You can

choose shorter sections of the 500km walking trail that will give you glimpses of local wildlife and the ocean, or something more challenging if you prefer – there are even cycling options! Whatever you choose, we know you’ll enjoy those ocean breezes and losing yourself in the amazing coastal sunsets we grew to love on South Australia’s Yorke Peninsula.

CARAVANLPG & CAMPING & SAFETY INSURANCE

When you buy a car, a house, a boat or any other type of major investment you immediately make sure your asset has insurance.

If you look at your policy, you will probably find that if your caravan or trailer comes loose and hits another car it won’t be covered.

But what about your caravan or RV?

So what sort of insurance do you need for a caravan.

residence the insurance industry is struggling to keep up with the changes. Many long term travellers find themselves getting incorrect advice or getting confused with what they need.

RETRO We can’t look at caravan styles without starting with the retro look. Many people are giving older vans a new lease on life and restyling them in a 50’s, 60’s or 70’s style to suit the van. Retro style caravans are so popular there are publications, retro caravan shows and communities that regularly meet to show off their old ladies. This style doesn’t have to be just confined to older vans though, you can style in the romanticism of the era in a newer van by adding a few touches here and there. Maybe add in a black and white floor or restyle the curtains or seat covers with some colours and patterns that reflect the era.

LUXURY Retro is not for everyone though. There are many people unwilling to give up some of home’s luxuries while they are travelling. And seriously why should you? Caravan manufacturers are recognising this and there are many vans now manufactured to reflect the cleans lines and spaces and a few luxury appliances to make your camping, more like glamping. For people able to purchase their caravans new, they generally have the option to design many of the interior features themselves so can choose the colours and interiors to suit their own styles and needs. Many of these vans come out looking like a brand new apartment!

QUIRKY CARAVANS

To be honest most of the really quirky caravans are found in other corners of the world. Pictures clearly tell the story so here are a couple of the more, unusual, styles we found. For example, if you ever wanted to know what it felt like to sleep in a hot dog.. actually it looks pretty comfy in there. This one would be perfect for the Aussie summer.. you could just take your pool with you wherever you go!

And at the other end of the scale this ‘motor home’ belongs to Bizar. H.H. Sheikh Hamad Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi. Wouldn’t you love a tour of the inside of that!

How’s this cloud van from Europe! I probably wouldn’t want to be travelling with kids, or through the Australian red dirt outback with all. that. white And finally for those who love watermelon..

Or maybe you’d like to sleep in a digger? A Welsh caravan show had this one ready to go.

Bush’n it on a budget Alice Springs – Darwin things to do

That long desert highway through the middle of this massive country can get a rep for being a bit boring

DEVILS MARBLES The Devils Marbles are a must visit! And I would

statues of aboriginal Anmatjere people and is a

perfect stop for a morning break or lunch.

There are many dreamtime stories about the

Devils Marbles but most are kept secret for the Aboriginal people. The one story shared by a senior traditional owner is of the secret people they believe to live among the rocks that may take you away. The Marbles were magical and the sky full of stars at night were amazing! As well as the national park camp we also stayed at Devils Marbles Hotel which was another wicked spot and only $10 per night for an unpowered site for all of us! They had clean amenities, a pool to cool down in and an outback pub.

DUNMARRA Dunmarra wasn’t somewhere we had heard of but as the kids were over been in the car by the time we got here it ended up being our spot for the night. At only $8 per adult for a site, amenities and

a pool to stay cool in it was an ok stop too! Even if you’re just passing through Dunmarra make sure you stop for a yummy chunky beef pie and an epic vanilla slice, you won’t be disappointed!

DALY WATERS PUB The famous Daly Waters Pub... Well you just can't drive past here without stopping can you? We actually rocked up here about 8.30am but still managed to get a refreshing beer and we got the place to ourselves! The pub is very quirky and eclectic with all sorts of weird and wonderful items been left behind by punters, this ‘tradition’ apparently started in the 80’s with a drinking bet between a coach driver and his female passengers!

Without having young kids in tow we would of 100% stayed the night here as it’s meant to be an awesome atmosphere with great food and beer but checking it out in the morning with the kids worked well.

MATARANKA/BITTER SPRINGS These hot springs were one on the bucket list and WOW they didn’t disappoint, it is absolutely stunning here! The springs are like a warm bath and are a magical turquoise colour. Bitter springs is a spring fed thermal pool and are the perfect place to relax after a big drive. I would recommend taking a pool noodle to float along on and little ones need floaties as it is quite deep. We stayed at Bitter Springs Cabins and Camping which was a great spot. We had a large grassy site which was to die for after lots of red dust AND it was only a 10 minute walk to bitter springs.

KATHERINE SPRINGS Katherine Springs are a great stop, personally we preferred Katherine Springs to Bitter springs even though they are very similar! There's just something so enticing about the emerald water. Katherine springs are only about 100m walk from the car park. Katherine is also a good place to stock up on anything you may need if you’re heading to Kakadu before Darwin.

PINE CREEK LOOKOUT What used to operate as a gold mine from 1985-1995 is now a pool of water which took 14 months to fill! Makes for a pretty nice lookout. From Pine Creek we headed to Kakadu but Darwin is just 2 hours north of here. No matter where you are there is always something to see, make the most of your journey! SAFE TRAVELS,

BUSH‘N IT ON A BUDGET.

Head over to our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/bushnitonabudget/ to keep up to date with what we’re up to and catch some information on some awesome places to visit!

Sunday Funday LOOK TO THE STARS

Space has been in the media a lot over the last month and who’s kids don’t love space! This has been a fantastic time to speak to our kids about a lot of things space and star related. Significantly, late July marked the 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing in 1969, where the USA won the space race and put man on the moon. Of equal importance a new generation learned about

Australia’s role in this event. Where two tiny little towns on opposite sides of the country played had a pivotal role in assisting Apollo 11, with it’s crew including Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, make that ‘one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind’. Parkes in NSW, famously home of The Dish, and not so famously, Carnarvon on the North-West coast of WA,

provided invaluable support to NASA throughout the moon landing operation, and have continued to provide important support for many more operations since. These two tracking stations, and dozens more dotted around the country are used for research and to communicate and track satellites up in space. Add these to larger stations and the countless observatories around Australia and you have

an incredible network of locations to visit from just about anywhere in the country. Visiting an observatory or any other type of tracking station can give you a great insight into the study of space, the sky, and the stars. Many hold regular talks or sessions on how to read the stars or if there is an event, such as a lunar eclipse, there will often be an opportunity for the public to look through the telescopes and learn about what is happening.

Visiting an observatory is an incredible opportunity for the whole family to learn about what is beyond our skies. Once you’ve visited, there is a whole sky of opportunity to put this new knowledge into practice. Caravanning and camping gives us plenty of time sitting under the stars. Knowing what you are looking at is a perfect way to keep the kids entertained.

And if you can time your camping with the next eclipse or when a satellite is due to pass through the earths orbit how much more exciting is this!
