24HRS COLD, 12HRS H WITH OUR MARINE GRA STAINLESS STEEL DRIN BOTTLE. One of the reasons we decided to align ourselves with Red is their high standard of innovation and quality. They leave no stone unturned in creating solutions for those who want to get out and enjoy some serious SUP time! Over the past 10 years Red Paddle Co has grown in to a world-leading paddleboard brand, built on the ethos of designing quality, with no compromise products.

Beyond the boards however, they were frustrated that well thought out products designed for our sport and 3 lifestyle were still missing.

Whenever they wanted to go on an epic paddling adventure, compete in an endurance race, or even spend a relaxed day at the beach with friends and family, they were having to compromise with accessories and gear that didn’t do what they really wanted it to because they were designed with other things in mind - and often poorly made. Who hasn’t felt like that before?!

Plastic pollution in our seas is an ever incr

Thankfully they decided to design their own premium range of things paddlers really needed – definitive versions of the kit you actually need, featuring all the elements you would ever want and using quality materials that look awesome too!

As you would expect from Red, performance, style and user-centric design is at the forefront of the range. You’ll find innovative new approaches to age old problems (‘What do I do with my valuables when I go paddling?’); and re-imagined must-haves (‘Why do change robes have to be cheap and nasty?’). We have been using the Red Original range this summer and couldn’t be happier! Whether it be for a morning SUP, travel adventures, work outs or afternoon surfs with the kids; we love all of it whether it is the hardworking and hardwearing coolbags, amazingly insulating hot/cold drinks bottle, or the board lock that keeps our gear secure when we’re not paddling.

4 5 All the range is designed to enable the ultimate experience, whatever your style of paddling, and they’ve made sure they have a multitude of uses beyond just 3 watersports - helping you get out there and EXPLORE YOUR WORLD. Check out our favourites or order yours today:

Sunshine Coast & Coolum Beach

The Sunshine Coast has been shining bright as a holiday destination for a while now and there is good reason why. Spanning from Caloundra just north of Brisbane, to Cooloola north of Noosa, it’s a section of pristine beaches, incredible hinterland and fun family activities that make it the perfect getaway destination, anytime of the year. In fact, there is good reason for the annual migration of grey nomads that

set up in the many caravan parks along the coast for the three months of winter, to escape the bitter cold down south. The Sunny Coast has just about everything you could possibly want. There are many places to choose from as a base on a Sunshine Coast holiday. If you are looking for somewhere that has all the trimmings, has easy access to everything the Sunshine Coast can offer, but is a little less busy, then Coolum Beach is a perfect pick.

Coolum Beach is situated at the base of Mount Coolum, which is a 25 million years old volcanic dome, and amazingly is the second largest rock in the world, right behind Uluru! Mount Coolum rises 208 metres above the Coolum Beach township which makes it a popular hike, and obviously gives it some pretty spectacular views. Beware though if you climb Coolum with your loved one. The traditional owners, Kabi Kabi, tell of the legend that says there is an ancient curse on the rock and a couple that climbs Mount Coolum together will break up.

This story dates back to the origin of the name Coolum which is derived from the Aboriginal word ‘gulum’ meaning blunt or headless. This refers to the shape of the top of the rock, which has no peak. The Kabi Kabi story is that Ninderry knocked off Coolum’s head because Coolum took Ninderry’s wife. His head then fell into the ocean, becoming what is now known as Mudjimba Island, and his body turned to stone and became Mount Coolum. The curse however remains, and Coolum’s revenge is to break up any couple that climb Mount Coolum together.

European history of the area is more of castaways and shipwrecks, sugarcane farms and timbermills, before housing started to appear in the area in the early 1900’s. Growing to what it is today, which is a perfect coastal village, with a pristine beach, great surf break and a fantastic welcoming community.

WHAT TO DO AT COOLUM BEACH There is so much to do right on your

doorstep at Coolum Beach, number one is relaxing on the beautiful beach, or maybe learning how to surf next to pro surfer Julian Wilson, on his home break. Other activities are the climb to the summit of Mount Coolum (just make sure you don’t go with your partner),or checking out the skate park and the Aqua Park, which is an inflatable floating field of joy, with water slides, blast bags, challenge tracks and wobble pads.

If skating or jumping around on inflatable floating objects is not your cup of tea, there is a plethora of shopping, cafes and other more refined activities that will keep you happy. During summer there is the Coolum Twilight Markets with lots of locally handmade treasures, and a selection of produce. Venturing further afield, the whole Sunshine Coast is an adventure waiting.

There is so much to do, on the water there is everything from cruising and boating for fishing, whale watching or just for fun, surfing, swimming and Stand Up Paddleboarding. Off the water, drive into the hinterland and explore the Glasshouse Mountains, visit local producers and pick your own strawberries, or visit the Maleny Dairy and Ginger Factory. Follow the Sunshine Coast art trail and enjoy the many and varied food

and wine options. Visit the Queensland Air Museum at Caloundra, Sea Life at Mooloolaba or Aussie World. Take in the wonders of the Sunshine Coast Castle at Bli Bli or pay a visit to the Australia Zoo. The Sunshine Coast is truly one of the greatest Australian destinations. Fitness on the Road 10 Tips to Stay Fit & Healthy While Travelling

Too many people think exercise has to be hard. No pain, no gain, right? That, and you need lots of equipment. Oh, and a “workout” has to be an hour long. In the end, you get overwhelmed. You’re too busy. Nothing gets done. This approach couldn’t be further from the truth. The reality is small things done consistently over time will give you the biggest benefits. And you’ll enjoy it. If you want to improve your health and fitness, the worst thing you can do is just go and exercise. The first thing you should do is change your mindset:

1

2 3 4

THE FIRST THING YOU NEED TO DO IS ASK YOURSELF WHAT’S YOUR ‘WHY’ What are the 5 things that are most important to you in life? Did you you mention ‘your health’ in your top 5? Great. Now, close your eyes, and picture the top 5 ways you spend your time. Be honest… is Netflix and Facebook getting more of your time? Unless you identify your ‘why’, you won’t make your health a priority. Is it to keep up with the kids? Look and feel better? Lose weight so you can have that knee operation? Or is it to have the energy to be able to do the walks on your travels? Only you can answer that. And there’s no wrong answer. Once you know your ‘why’, it’ll help you choose where you focus your time, as well as know how to…

FOCUS ON HABITS INSTEAD OF PROGRAMS A program is a great way to kickstart improvements, but… what happens when you finish? Nothing. You stop. You go back to exactly what you were doing before. Motivation and self-discipline are tough for most of us. You need to focus on developing life-long habits. What do you think will be better for you in the long run? Routinely walking 20 minutes every morning, or running 30 minutes once a week? HINT: It’s not running.

START SLOWLY AND GRADUALLY BUILD UP The #1 mistake people make with trying to get fit is going too hard, too soon. You add something that takes up a lot of time into a busy schedule. It isn’t enjoyable and you end up sore. You’re more likely to get injured. But… if you do just a little bit today, you’ll hardly notice it. Increase it a tiny little bit next time. You won’t notice the change. Wash, rinse, and repeat. A book that changed my life was Tim Ferriss’ The 4-Hour Body, especially the concept of the ‘Minimum Effective Dose’..

LITTLE AND OFTEN IS BETTER THAN HARD AND… NEVER If every workout is an hour, you’ll find excuses like “I don’t have time.” If you go hard, you’ll be sore and won’t be able to exercise as often. A recipe for disaster. Read the article The Secret to Getting Fit? Don’t Train So Hard

DON’T EVER GO ON A DIET Show me a diet, and I’ll show you a picture of a yo-yo. You’ll bottom out, and life will absolutely suck for 28 days (or whatever “their” magic number is). You will miss out on the fun things in life. If you do happen to make it back up to the top, congratulations. Time to go back to your old habits. Everything in moderation, even moderation. Develop an awareness of what you eat, and a healthy relationship with food… because red wine and chocolate.

ADD IN GOOD THINGS INSTEAD OF TAKING AWAY BAD THINGS So you’ve been eating and drinking that ‘stuff’ for 5 years. And you’re planning on stopping it tomorrow? Good luck with that. If you do manage it, tell me how you did it. We can make a LOT of money teaching people your magic secret. What if you instead focussed on adding in the habit of drinking 1L of water a day? I’m sure you’d drink less cola. If you slowly add in good things and they become habits, they’ll become the normal. They’ll eventually crowd out the things that you don’t really want in there. How to Choose the Right Stand Up Paddleboard SUP

TREAT TRAVEL AS YOUR LIFESTYLE I’m on holidays, so I don’t need to take my blood pressure tablets. Or brush my teeth. Sounds silly, doesn’t it. The funny thing? Your teeth fall out, you can get some dentures. If you lose your ability to play with the kids, get up and down off the ground, or go for that hike with the family… that’s a lot harder to fix. You’re going away for a 2-week holiday once a year? Rest. Your body will benefit from it. Travelling regularly? Different story.

HAVE A GOOD PLAN THAT YOU’LL FOLLOW INSTEAD OF A PERFECT ONE YOU WON’T Unless you’re trying to shave 0.1 seconds off your 100m run time, you don’t need a fancy program. You won’t stick to it anyway. All you need is a simple plan that involves some basic strength exercises and some longer endurance activities. That’s it. And they don’t have to be hard. Just move. I can 100% guarantee that if you do a simple program that you can stick to, you will be much better off than a complex program you do half of. The goal is adherence.

LEARN EXERCISES USING YOUR BODYWEIGHT If you get used to exercising using just your bodyweight, the whole world will be your gym. Learn how to do variations of push-ups, squats, lunges, dips, pull-ups, etc. You can scale these no matter what your current level of fitness. When I used to be a rehabilitation physiotherapist, these are what you’d get whether your were an athlete recovering from a knee reconstruction or someone in a nursing home recovering from a stroke. Learn exercises using your bodyweight

Travelling? You won’t need to carry equipment with you, and you’ll save on gym fees. You’ll be able to move better in everyday life too.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT THINGS Contrary to what commercial gyms would have you believe (their revenue depends on it), you don’t need a lot of equipment. There are some things I’d recommend though. If you have a mat for the ground, you’ll be more likely to get down. If you have a 1L water bottle, you’ll be more likely to drink 1L of water every day. Your goal is 2L a day? Get a 2L water bottle. What about exercise equipment? If you’re a traveller, check out The Only Equipment You Need to Keep Fit While Travelling. Once you’ve changed your mindset, you’ll see that the most important thing is knowing your ‘why’. Then, it’s all about moving. Consistently. And increasing gradually.

LET'S GET FRUITY

Yes, summer is here and although it can be a touch warm here in the Whitsundays, the tropical fruits are in full flourish. Such a culinary treat for the eyes and taste buds. Dragon fruit, papaya, passionfruit, a bounty of beautiful berry jewels and red shinny cherries, so sweet to taste. Mangoes, deliciously luscious and the range now is amazing. There are also so many other wonderful tropical fruits. Every now and then, some pop up I’ve never herd of. Best to always buy and try I say.

Pretty much anywhere you roam in Australia you will find a local market selling their home-grown local produce and sometimes other enchanted goodies brought from other regions of our diverse amazing landscape. Best to get out there and hunt and gather some of this season produce and get fruity. Of course, a tropical fruit salad for breakfast is a wonderful way to start the day but if feeling a bit cheeky and its after 10am, a fruity daquiri on the special occasions is, in my opinion, definitely allowed. Only special occasions of course. If like me though you don’t want these beautiful tastes of summer to disappear, one of the best ways to enjoy this array of fruit is the classic

fruit sorbet. A dish to make and preserve these fruity delights. As the abundance of local strawberries start to disappear a sorbet is a fantastic way to linger on the delicious flavour. Blueberries, another fabulous berry and so good for you. A touch of pure bliss in the freezer for you to enjoy anytime. Serve in a bowl, in a cone or with another dessert, I also love a sorbet with cheesecake, Yum. Is it worth it, hell yeah!

So, let’s get fruity!

CLASSIC FRUIT SORBET This is a base recipe for fruit sorbet. It will cover most fruits but remember all fruits are different so sugar levels and lime/ lemon juice will vary. It will always need to be sweeter before freezing as the sweetness will drop when frozen. So just go a little sweetie. You can infuse other flavours into the sugar syrup, like cinnamon, lavender, cardamom, nutmeg, rose water, citrus peel, fresh herbs, lemon grass etc. Remember you want it to be a bit too sweet as this will drop when frozen. The best way to check is to freeze a little mix on a plate and taste. Then you can adjust the sugar or citrus. Tasting is always the best balancing tool.

INGREDIENTS 4-5 cups fresh fruit, remove any skins pips or inedible parts 1 cup sugar 1 cup water 2-6 tablespoons of lemon or lime juice to taste.

METHOD Peel, pip, do whatever the fruit requires, then roughly chop. Place sugar and water in saucepan and gently bring to the boil to dissolve the sugar. Cool, this can even be made the day before so it’s good ‘n’ chilled. Place chilled sugar syrup, lime or lemon juice and fruit into a blender and blend till smooth. This mix can now be strained depending on the consistency you require. Smooth sorbet stain, textured sorbet don’t. So now, if using a machine, place into the bowl (frozen) of an ice cream machine and churn away. Follow the machines instructions. When ready scoop into a plastic container, cover with cling film, this

will help prevent the top layer going icy and lid. Keep in freezer till sorbet time. No machine, no problem, just freeze in a container or any plastic moulds. When frozen, remove, cut into chunks and blend again. Usually this step is only required once, but if you feel it needs it do it again. This can be the case if the sorbet is a bit older a re-blend and freeze can bring it back to life Store in freezer, once again with cling film and lid to protect. Sorbet will last in the freezer for a few months, then it will start to go icy. But fear NOT. If this does happen, or even before it does, perfect solution. Blend with a white Rum to make the perfect fruit daiquiri, only after 10am lol.

YUM.

CHRISTMAS /JAN HIRER REVIEWS JACINTA We have just returned from a wonderful holiday in Merimbula, this was our first time hiring a caravan through CNCHire, I found the website on Facebook and it was very easy to book and Wes was quick to respond to any queries. Kylie & Darren were great owners to deal with and were very accommodating with delivery to our house required at the last minute. They were happy to answer any questions we had (stupid or not lol). Our Jayco Expanda was in great condition, had everything we needed for our holiday and the goodie bag was a lovely surprise which we thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks to everyone involved especially Kylie & Darren, we look forward to booking again soon. MARNIE Awesome camper. Keith was fantastic and very patient and friendly. Made our little family getaway and friends reunion a most pleasurable and fun experience. BOBBIE Great Caravan! Comes with everything you need, easy to set up, perfect for our family of 5. Owners were great help and very easily contactable Lovely and clean van would defiantly recommend Thanks again MICHELLEABELA What a great convenient vehicle. I had the pleasure of hiring this camper for 2 nights. I was comfortable, warm and well equipped. I was especially impressed with how easy it was to hitch/unhitch and maneuver manually on my own. The complete process from booking to returning was so quick and easy and my deposit was refunded without delay. Great service, great vehicle, and I would highly recommend giving it a go. KATE We hired Sean & Tara’s caravan for 4.5 weeks to explore the east coast. It was our first time towing and living in a caravan and we thoroughly enjoyed our experience. The van itself was clean and well maintained and easily accommodated our family of 5. Hitching was a breeze, setup & down was straightforward and the beds were comfortable. Lots of nice little inclusions (like fans and board games) made for a very pleasant first-time experience and certainly not our last. Thanks guys.

Heidi Ph: 0487 895 683 E: heidi@goldcoastmarinetraining.com.au www.goldcoastmarinetraining.com.au/contact-us Suite 9, Lvl 1, Runaway Bay Marina Offices

I recently had the pleasure of attending GC Marine training to complete my boat and Jet ski licencing course. With some trepidation of being back in the “classroom setting for the first time in a long while I set of early morning to the Runaway bay marine for an 8am start. Any fears were quickly allayed when greeted by MJ, who would run us over several hours through the first half of the training for the Boat license. MJ was terrific, extremely knowledgeable and delivered the course content in an upbeat relatable way that had every one smiling and at ease. The class setting was kept small at 8 students

in attendance. I found this effective throughout the course with trainers able to offer one on one time with students as required without holding up the schedule over the course of the day. The course flowed well, first half being the theory and PowerPoint style learning for the boat licence, there is a multiple choice at the end of this education and educators worked through this with students to make sure everyone had a good grasp of the course content and the knowledge required for boating safely on the water. Then we were introduced to Heidi Van Woerden, the company owner. Heidi was to take us on the practical section of the Boating course and then following this the remainder of the course for the Jet Ski license.

Heidi is extremely knowledgeable, she has a great passion for the boating lifestyle and it shines through during the course. Heidi has over 14 years’ experience in the maritime industry, skippering and crewing on a range of commercial vessels throughout Australia. Heidi has a Master Class 5 and Marine Engine Driver 3 qualifications and has substantial sailing experience also. Heidi took us down to the marina and to the 570 Brigg Navigator, this is the vessel we will be completing the practical component in. I found this to be the perfect boat for the Job as the inflatable tubing surrounding the hull of the vessel certainly offers some comfort, extra confidence when parking and manoeuvring the vessel for the practical component. We were taken in groups of 4 on the Navigator and each had a turn for assessment at docking and

navigating channel markers, with “Wilson” the affectionately named little inflatable fender being thrown overboard for us to demonstrate a man over board scenario. Heidi gives clear calm instructions throughout the practical component so this goes smoothly in a timely manner. Upon completion of this it’s lunch time and we all break, I recommend Kleins Coffee Bar and Grill at the Marina. Excellent food and service there, but you can also bring your own lunch and enjoy the break at the marina if you would prefer. Upon return to the classroom Heidi then runs you through the Jet ski theory, this does not take up much time if you have completed the boat license theory in the morning session as most of the content is covered in that. There is another shorter multiple choice test to complete this then it’s back out on the water one on one with Heidi for the practical test on the Jet Ski. The Jet Ski is the Yamaha VX 110 Cruiser, This Jet ski is again the perfect watercraft to learn on. It is reliable and stable with forward and reverse control systems. Heidi runs you through the maintenance of the Jet Ski, handy tips and hints, before heading out one on one for the completion of the practical component. Cruising out into the seaway to navigate the markers, demonstrate control with a full circle and figure 8 then docking back at the marina. All in all I found the course to be very enjoyable, practical and run efficiently. If you are looking at getting into the boating lifestyle, buying a new boat or Jet Ski then I highly recommend making contact with GC Marine Training and booking in for one of their courses. Jump onto

their website and navigate to the Face to Face courses section on the home page, there is an easy to follow calendar that will give you the dates and times and courses running on any particular day. https://www.goldcoastmarinetraining.com.au/

you can also complete the theory online. Download the easy to follow modules and print out your certificate of attainment, then book in to complete the practical component. Thank you to Heidi, MJ and the great team at GC Marine Training for a wonderful day. Happy and safe boating to all our Liquid Life and Leisure Legends this summer.

Hidden Treasures of the Illawarra and South Coast, NSW with Sel and Honey

THE MIND-BLOWING BOMBO QUARRY HEADLAND Just 10 minutes drive north of NSW’s famous Kiama Blowhole you can find Bombo Headland Quarry. A much overlooked but definitely a must-visit destination.

Bombo Quarry Headland is an awe-inspiring hidden treasure tucked away, and yet so close to one of Australia’s most travelled highways – the Princes Highway. The heritage-listed area is a feast of spectacular contrasts – the solid, towering, basalt columns; the bare, volcanic, rocky moonscape; and the beauty, vastness, and power of the ocean. The headland is a photographer’s mecca – with sunrise and sunset it’s most photographed times of the day. However, it is quite simply an awe-inspiring experience at any time of the day. The quarry is steeped in historic and geological relevance. Dating back to the 1900s, the former blue metal quarry provided local employment for almost 100 years. It is also one of the most significant geological sites in NSW and its incredible rock formations create an otherworldy experience. The area has the added bonus of being dog friendly – so you can take your four-legged friend along on this adventure.

How do I get there?

2 hours south of Sydney, Bombo Headland Quarry is located off Cliff Drive, Bombo, NSW (just off the Princes Highway). The car park is located at the north end of Bombo Beach. There is a walking track to the quarry. You can access maps of local walking and cycling tracks from the Kiama Council website.

The perfect time to plan your next camping holiday With Christmas, New Year and even Australia Day now all done and dusted, the holiday season is well and truly over for another year. Adults are back at work, kids are back at school and 2019 is officially underway- and for many of us, it is looking busier than ever! Even if you love your job or school, the hustle and bustle of the new year can often be overwhelming and stressful, leaving many of us already wondering when we can book our next trip away. The summer holiday period is synonymous with rest, relaxation, and getting outdoors and is the longest break of the year for many families, but it can quickly feel like a distant memory as we get stuck into 2019. It is for this reason that now is the perfect time to start planning your next caravan and camping holiday! If you’re lacking in motivation and already eager for the next break, booking a camping trip in advance will give you something to look forward to and help create a positive mindset and motivation for the months ahead. If you work full time or are part of a busy family, it can be tricky to find the time to get away. This year, we are here to help you make the most of your annual leave and long weekends! The Easter long weekend is approaching in April and will this year fall from the 19th until the 22nd. With ANZAC Day on the 25th as usual, you can take just three days of holidays (the 23rd, 24th and 26th) and score 10 days off- more than enough time for a caravan or camping trip!! If you want to make the most of holiday opportunities and give yourself a camping trip to look forward to, make sure to book these dates off ASAP. April is also the perfect time to travel many areas of Australia, with the hottest weather generally over and the cold temperatures yet to set in. Our research has also revealed those who regularly undertake caravan and camping trips are competitively happier, more optimistic and less stressed than non-campers. So if you’re feeling the pressure in 2019 and are eager to make the most of holiday opportunities, what are you waiting for?! For more ideas and inspiration to help you plan your trip, visit http://www.letsgocaravanandcamping.com.au/

of caravanning, from grey nomads,

Trail-A-Mate is one such product that really does live up to the hype. Trail-A-Mate is a Hydraulic jockey wheel that converts to a jack and it really is as easy as swapping the wheel for a solid base plate. The jack gives you the ability to jack up a caravan with an aggregated mass (ATM) of up to 2,900kg. For caravans weighing over this there is a Trail-A-Mate Mark II that will meet your needs.

Trail-A-Mate is fully compliant with the Australian mandatory safety standards and with more than 160

It’s not worth the risk of using a jack incorrectly when it can mean death or injuries that result in amputation or fractures from being crushed under the weight of a vehicle that has fallen off a jack.

can operate it with minimum effort and from a standing position, which will definitely save your back! Also important is having the jockey wheel and jack as one piece of equipment, which minimises what you need to pack. That means more space for that extra fishing rod.

It’s not just caravans that the Trail-A-Mate can be used for though. It can be used on any trailer, horse float, motor home or food van and over the last few years caravan manufacturers have begun to fit the Trail-A-Mate engagement fittings to the chassis, making it even easier to use. 233 Shepherds Hill Road Eden Hills SA 5050 Phone: (08) 8278 5107 | Email: info@trail-a-mate.com.au

Bush’n it on a budget

TRAVELLING WITH YOUNG KIDS When we left to travel around Australia our kids were

eight months and just turned two. Travelling with kids is a lot different to travelling as a couple like we were

used too. Living on the road with two little ones is just the same as being at home... sometimes very hard

work! BUT also, it is so rewarding! We truly believe

our kids are thriving since hitting the road, they really are learning so much each day and socially they're absolutely loving it.

Among those first steps at the beach, feeding

kangaroos, learning new skills and exploring nature moments there are also the times where the baby

wants to be held ALL THE TIME, the toddler

doesn't listen to a word we say, and the tantrums are unbearable.

The good definitely outweighs the bad and the memories we are making with them will last a

lifetime even if sometimes it feels like the day will last a lifetime‌

Here's a few tips and ideas to help travelling with

little ones that little bit easier. Just remember even when it's hard it's more than doable and 100% worth it!

TRY AND HAVE DINNER PREPARED Having meals ready or everything prepared makes life so much easier, especially on a big driving day. When 'witching hour' hits and you’ve only just

rocked up at camp with the whole set up to do the hardest thing is to start getting dinner ready with two whiny infants clinging to you. Having dinner

ready means you can give the kids more of your attention and hopefully tone down the chaos.

ENTERTAINMENT, SNACKS AND NAPS IN THE CAR. Having snacks in the car is literally a life saver! We

tend to stick to fruit, squeezy yoghurts, cheese and crackers or plain biscuits. It’s amazing how much bribing can be done with food! We wouldn’t be

without an iPad or tablet in the car, the

amount of time they spend running around outside and being wild we can totally

justify the hour of peace it gives us on a long journey. They both also have little

hand-held toys to play with in their seat

pockets like miniature trucks and diggers which keeps them happy for a while.

When we were traveling the east coast, we didn’t travel more then 200kms between

each camp which was a good distance for

us as regards to the kids staying sane, the west coast is different as there can be big distances between locations, but we still

try and keep the kilometres travelled each day to a minimum. Hitting the road when

the kids are due a nap is ALWAYS a good idea.

KEEP SOME ROUTINE. Truthfully, it's really hard to stick to a daytime

routine as some days we're travelling, some days we're at camp and some days we're out doing activities BUT we ALWAYS stick to the kid’s

bedtime routine. For us this means dinner at 5pm, shower at 6pm then a story and bed for

6.30-7.00pm. We would seriously be lost without this routine, by 6.30pm we are ready to say

goodnight to our little angels. A good bedtime

routine also means we get our own time without

them around and the kids get the sleep they need.

GET THE KIDS INVOLVED. Yes, even the little one’s love being involved. Both of our kids love knowing if we are going to a new camp and finding out what facilities they have there! If our next stop is a caravan park we always show them

pictures before we leave as they tend to get excited and it will also make them happier to be in the car.

We ALWAYS tell the kids what the plans for the day are and give them options too (the park

ALWAYS wins). Giving them little jobs and small

tasks to do around the camp also makes them feel more involved.

Let them burn energy. Letting them burn some energy especially on long travel days can stop things from getting chaotic.

We make sure we have a good stop for lunch and

let the kids have a good run around. There's plenty

of parks or open spaces to stop at along the way, it breaks up the drive for both the adults and the kids and makes them happier in the car for the remainder of the trip.

Davos Do Australia DARGO - VICTORIAN HIGH COUNTRY

One of the many things we were really looking forward to when we hit Victoria was to visit and explore the High Country: Gippsland, The Mornington Peninsula as well as the famous Murray River! As it’s turns out, the Gippsland area was going to be our first area to explore and Dargo was the destination!

After heading East out of town with 400,000 of our closest friends during the Xmas break, we called in for a very healthy burger, chips and Diet Coke (I’m on a diet) at the Moe Maccas and headed into the unknown. We didn’t really have a camping location planned when we got there

and for this trip we were running just the swags as I was unsure about the terrain, tracks and general camping space available. We just wanted to find some great spots and see where we end up and that’s exactly what we found, our first night was camped in a sweet bush setting on the Freestone Creek track that was hard to find unless you

crossed a small river, turned right, up the hill and there you are! After a quick dip in the creek where we were treated to watching a wombat cruise on by, have look at us for 5 mins and then disappear into its burrow! We decided to keep trekking the next day and made the quick drive into Dargo for the regulation beer and

Parma at the Dargo Hotel and all I can say it was amazing, the inside was great to wander around and just look at all the stuff all over the walls and ceiling, the beer, was awesome because, well, it’s beer and the Parma was massive, cheap and delicious! Being the Xmas and New Year period, the whole town was packed, so get fuel before you come if you’re up here at that time of the year as there’s only

one servo which is also the general store, it’s easy to find as it’s across the road from the pub! After an hour or so sitting outside the pub checking out all the Patrols, Cruisers, Hilux’s and the occasional Ssangyong that were getting around, the cowboy boots and more dodgy mullets than a 90’s Billy Ray Cyrus concert, we headed off along the Wonongatta road and found the most

amazing and beautiful free camp ground next to the river called Black Snake Creek campsite! Be sure to take your own fire wood as dry wood was scarce and the long drop was all sorts of nasty!! The Wonongatta track can be quite windy in some places and more than once we had to get off the road due to a few dicks driving like idiots and ending up on our side around some bends!

Next up for our adventure was Billy Goats Bluff track, a steep, narrow and rough track that leads up to the fire lookout at the pinnacles, it’s one of the steepest tracks in Victoria and can get hectic, awkward and very very ass tightening when others are coming the other way! Be sure to use your UHF when travelling up or down as some places are one way only with a very steep gradient and high drop offs one side

and cliff faces the other! The rest of the trip and new year was spent relaxing in the river and around the fire with fellow travellers from NSW and just enjoying another part of Australia that we can’t wait to explore more!!

LPG &FIRE SAFETY There are few things in life that are certain. You know the general stuff, but here in Australia, you can be certain that in the summer months there will be bushfire. For those of us that are regularly out on the road, and camping in sometimes remote areas, we need to make sure that we are bushfire aware, and have a fire plan. Bushfires are unpredictable. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services in WA (DFES) warns that indecision is the biggest killer when it comes to surviving a bushfire. It warns you must be prepared. Travelling during a bushfire could be life threatening but DFES advises if you find yourself travelling during a bushfire to: Always carry maps of the area you are entering and know the exit routes; Check the weather forecast, Fire Danger Ratings, any current fire

restrictions, and if a total fire ban is in place for the area you plan to visit; Listen to ABC local radio for news about where bushfires are burning; Be prepared to reassess your plans; Store a woollen blanket and drinking water in the car; If you see a bushfire in the distance, pull over to the side of the road to assess the situation. If it is safe to do so, turn around and drive away from the smoke; Always follow the directions of police and firefighters if they are present; If there is a lot of smoke, slow down and be aware there could be people, other vehicles and livestock on, or close to the road; turn on your car headlights and hazard lights; close the windows and vents. DFES also advise if you find yourself in your car and

trapped by a fire to: Find a clearing away from dense bush; Where possible park behind a natural barrier, such as a rocky outcrop; Find a suitable place to park away from vegetation if possible and prepare to shelter in your car from the heat; Stay inside your car, it offers the best level of protection from the heat and as the fire front passes, unless there’s a well-protected building nearby; Turn the engine off; Close all doors, windows, and air vents and turn the air conditioning on to full and recirculate; Drink water to minimise the risks of dehydration; Lie on the floor and cover your body with a woollen blanket or cotton blankets or cloth; Do not get out or open windows until the fire front has passed;

After the fire front has passed be aware that the fire danger is not over. Heat, smoke and embers will still be there and can in fact increase. If you are in a car, fumes can be released from interior plastics. DFES advise: Stay as close to the floor as possible to minimise inhalation of fumes and cover your mouth with a moist cloth; If possible, stay in the car until the front is passed and the temperature has dropped outside; Stay covered in woollen blankets and continue to drink water. This is a very dangerous time as tyres, and external plastic body parts may catch alight and metal parts will be extremely hot. If you find yourself in a bushfire

while you are on foot DFES advises to not panic, move to clear or already burnt ground and do not try and run uphill. Stay low and seek shelter behind a log, rocky outcrop or embankment to protect yourself from radiant heat; If your clothes catch fire, don’t run. Stop, drop, cover your face and roll over and over to extinguish the flames Just like at home, you also need to have a fire plan inside your caravan. DFES advice for caravan safety is: Ensure all gas equipment for your caravan is tested and in good working order; Gas cylinders on caravans

should be external and secured with valves facing away from the van; Make sure you have a fire extinguisher and fire blanket, and locate them near an exit and easily accessible; Install a smoke alarm close to the sleeping area; Ensure all fire safety equipment are maintained; Have an emergency escape plan that everyone can understand; Ensure you turn off any pilot lights before towing your caravan or when the vehicles engine is running; Service all electric and mechanical brakes and bearings on your caravan. Stay safe everyone and look out for others.

TRAVELLING WITH PETS LONG TERM

Once upon a time, if as a pet owner you wanted to hit the road for more than a short holiday, you either had to consider rehoming your fur babies, or finding someone to care for them long term. There were very few accommodation options where pets were welcome, and even fewer places you could explore with pets in tow. Now is a very different world. Most camp grounds and caravan parks have some pet friendly options available. Poona Palms Caravan Park, which is opposite Fraser Island in Queensland, is just one accommodation provider which has seen the immense benefits of providing more for people who are travelling with their pets. In addition to their pet friendly

accommodation, in the last 12 months they have installed a coin dog wash in the park and in October last year they put in an off-leash dog area, complete with agility equipment to keep the four legged family members happy and active. Travellers who have made the decision to bring the whole family have a whole range of experiences. ‘Us and The Bus’ are Dale, Susan, 14 year old Shania, nine year old Xavier and Snowy the cat. They left Perth in April 2018, now living in a refurbished bus. Susan said that Snowy originally came to them as a stray they no intentions of keeping. After searching for her family they took her to a vet and discovered Snowy’s original owners had given her to another family, who abandoned her.

“We bought her home with us that day and told the children she could stay. We had plans to live in a bus but what were we to do with the sweet little fluff ball? As the time came closer to us moving into the bus we tried to re home her but had no luck”.

have a little walk around or look out the window but mostly she sleeps”. Susan said, “We keep her on a lead at all times when camping and she sleeps with Dale and I in our double swag. Snowy comes in the ute with us when we are site seeing and has even come to the beach with us”. “We have a cat bag that we picked up from Kmart, we put her in it when we are out and about with her. At home in the bus she has a bit more freedom, we let her in and out as she pleases when we are going to be there for an extended period of time. The bus is her home and she doesn’t venture far. She will sit outside with us in the morning when we are having a coffee, or in the evening if we are sitting have

“We said to her then, well Snowy, you chose us, you’ll just have to come live with us in the bus”. “We had lots of concerns about travelling with a cat, luckily she is good in the car and adaptable. Nothing has been as bad as we thought it would be”. “She has a little nook for her kitty litter and another for food and water. She has her own seat in the bus and when Dale turns on the engine she jumps down from wherever she is and runs down to the front of the bus to take her seat next to Shania”. “Occasionally she might get up to

a beer, but she is always in at night time to sleep on the end of someone’s bed”. Susan said they get around the issue of visiting national parks by parking the bus at a nearby caravan park and doing day trips while Snowy stays at home. “Our general experience of having Snowy on board with us has been a very positive one. She certainly has a place in the bus and in our hearts. We are amazed how well she has adapted to the lifestyle and I think its good for the kids to have a furry friend to turn to when their day gets tough. She is a wonderful, playful, quiet and often calming presence for all of us, and our days wouldn’t be the same without her”. Nicky, Mark and Charlie the miniature schnauzer have been travelling together for four years, after leaving their home in Frankston in Victoria.

Nicky said when they made the decision to travel there wasn’t any doubt in their minds that Charlie was coming with them. “Charlie is our family, there was no way we were leaving him behind”, she said. The biggest challenge they find is when they are stopped for work. “I couldn’t just leave Charlie in the caravan, so I find someone to look after him when I go out to work. I talk to the locals, or the vet, and I’ve always been very lucky and found someone to care for him”. Nicky said there are lots of pros and cons about travelling with a dog, and they have not visited some places because they couldn’t take Charlie. “Personally though Mark and I have loved every minute of our adventure with Charlie, I wouldn’t change anything we’ve done”.

20 Legs around Australia are a family of six. With four kids aged 12, nine, seven and three, they also travel with their two dogs – Spanner a 13 year old Spandor and Sam, a seven year old Labrador. When they left Mount Barker in South Australia in February 2018, there was no doubt that they would bring the dogs with them. “We never really considered leaving them, especially with Spanner’s age, and also because we didn’t know how long we would be travelling for. We made sure we had room for them from the start”. Natalie said the biggest issue they have is going shopping. “We have overcome that by using ‘click and collect’ services when we get to a town, so I can run in and collect with everyone waiting in the truck”. “Most things you can do with the

dogs, the other places we take turns or get dog sitters organised. We’ve found local vets do day sitting, so we can do day tours, or kennels if it’s a longer period like national parks”. “We have had to skip some places because of them, but this is a big trip for us, we don’t know when it’s going to stop, so we just put these places on the list for next time. We’ve never been too upset about missing somewhere because we know we’ll go back”. Natalie said their overall experience of travelling with two dogs has been great. “I always encourage people to take their dogs, it definitely is not as hard as people make it out to be. It’s very doable and we wouldn’t be without them!” Follow us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/Poona-Palms-Caravan -Park-1729815047247863/ http://www.poonapalms.com.au

It’s the people you meet One of the most incredible things about travel is the characters you meet along the way. I love sitting down with the eccentrics you come across to find out what their story is and why they are doing what they are doing. Some of my favourite eccentrics are the people who are walking, running, cycling or whatever their mode of transport is, across the country, generally solo, either to raise awareness or funds for a cause close to their

heart, or sometimes, just because. Of course, one of the most well known of these trips in recent years was that done by Samuel Johnson when he unicycled around Australia to raise money for cancer research. I also have a friend who cycled for cancer awareness from Adelaide to Sydney, and we’ve come across a couple of travellers on our journey, who were raising awareness in their own way.

The first was an Italian Ultra runner, named Michel Evangelisti, who decided to run from Darwin to Adelaide during the hottest time of the year to raise

money for Spina Bifida. We came across him at the Devils Marbles in the Northern Territory. We had already set up camp for

the night and then noticed this man come running into the camp ground around 7pm that night behind a camper van.

It all looked a bit odd but it was only the next morning when we noticed them running around the Devils Marbles doing a photo shoot that we really started

to question what they were doing? Curiosity finally got me and I spoke to him as he shot past me.

He explained his quest to run across the Australian Outback, handed me some merchandise and ran off into the hot, hot sun, behind his support crew in the camper van.

More recently, in Port Hedland WA, we met up with Herb and his dog Snotty. They were cycling around Australia on a recumbent bike, raising awareness for diabetes. We saw Herb on the road a few days earlier and when

he rolled into the same Caravan Park we invited him over for a beer and a chat. Herb had been diagnosed with diabetes and decided that he needed to do something. So he packed up his bike and started to cycle.

Herb was a true eccentric and had a million stories to share about his travels.

Who have you come across while you’ve been travelling who had a great story?

European caravans are becoming quite common in Australia, as are a particular style of tiny caravans called teardrops based on a 1930’s design. They complement the tiny house movement with smaller footprint and cost but equal comfort and clever design. The advantage of smaller caravans is that they are fuel efficient, easier to tow and store, and can be towed by very small cars. Caretta Australia was founded in 2016 and is based in the Perth suburb of Malaga. The strong demand locally and

from the Eastern States has prompted expansion and Caretta teardrops are now distributed Australia wide with dealers in Victoria and NSW. The compact, fibreglass-bodied models are built by a 40-year-old Turkish caravan manufacturer with development and adjustment to meet all Australian regulations. Caretta mini caravans are also customised for Australian camping and driving conditions and are half the price of most traditional caravans. Two versions of the teardrop camper are available - onroad and offroad, all

built to the highest specifications using FRP fiberglass panels and a steel chassis with ALKO axles, suspensions and hitches. They have a spacious interior which features a queen size bed, a perfect luxury space. The tailgate lifts to reveal the beautifully proportioned kitchen, complete with sink, fridge, water supply and a quality worktop with cupboards above. To complete the overall versatility of the pop out, an integrated front locker box gives easy access to battery and electrics, and plenty of additional storage space. The caretta offroad teardrop caravan - is the best

fully offroad teardrop in Australia and is suited to the offroader who likes extra comfortable accommodation. It can handle all terrains and has been tested extensively in Australian conditions. Free camping options are available along with the ability to customise to your preference. The offroad Caretta’s ergonomic teardrop design gives excellent towing performance and handling. There’s also commercial enclosed trailers and a ‘Pop Up Shop’ model with raised canopy roof aimed at those with mobile small businesses like coffee or ice-cream sellers.

Camp Spots - Camp Spots – Tips for Free Camping Hi, it’s David from camp-spots.com and this month we are diving into the beginnings of free camping. Exploring Australia has never been easier and with our guide at camp-spots.com, we will get you pointed in the right direction to free camp your way around Australia and start living your dream. Free camping has been increasing in popularity and it is easy to see why. You can explore more with less, but where do you start? We have hundreds of free camp reviews at camp-spots.com, making it easy to choose a camp that suits your needs. It is a fantastic concept that you can travel and see more with the same amount of money, or it free’s money up to spend in towns.

1. Plan your journey There is lots of reference material that will guide you, groups such as our FaceBook Group Everything Camping Australia (https://www.facebook.com/groups/campreviewsaustralia) is a must to join and is a god send to keep up to date with camp spot conditions throughout Australia and our map will help you plan your adventure.

2. Have the right gear This will depend on where you are going and what your level of comfort is. However the old saying KISS, “Keep it simple stupid is what you need to follow”. Water, Water and more water, you need a good solid water supply and a way of catching it is even better. Work out how much gas you need and then buy the right size gas cylinders. Make sure you have a way of charging your batteries so either solar or a generator (or both) and to take the burden off your electrical supply make sure all your lights have been changed over to LED’s. Porta loos are needed as a lot of camping spots don’t have toilets and require you to be self-sufficient, so pick a good one that you feel comfortable with.

3. Know your weight Weight is an issue so make a list of needs and then wants, if your towing a trailer make sure you fully pack it, including with water and then get it weighed, so you can keep it within manufactures towing limits.

4. Communication This is key and I don’t think we need to go over just how important it is to be able to contact someone in case of an emergency. You will get mobile coverage, and depending on the service provider this can be great to none, so don’t always be reliant on one. With a lot of the free camps situated in remote areas or on the fringes of phone reception, pre-planning is key here to make sure communication is always available and at bare minimum tell someone where and when you should be leaving and arriving at destinations. There are plenty of options from satellite phones to UHF so choose carefully and do as much research as you can.

OTHER POINTS TO CONSIDER WATER AVAILABILITY: Many free camps are more remote and rely on bore water if they even have water available at all. It’s always wise to carry your own water when camping so keep this in mind FIRES AND BBQ’S: If you’re staying in a National Park area you won’t be allowed to collect firewood and will need to bring your own. Similarly, if there are fire bans in place then open fires are not allowed. Having a gas cooktop in these instances is always a bonus. TIME LIMITS: Some camp sites only allow limited stays. Be sure to follow any rules regarding this as you can face fines in some instances, but more importantly, the rules are there to be sure that all visitors to the area have availability to resources. Campers causing problems by ignoring limits and other rules sometimes are the cause of free sites being closed, so it pays to be respectful. RUBBISH: There are no rubbish collection services at many free camp sites. This makes sense because rubbish services cost money, so if you’re not paying or you’re only paying minimal charges, and there are no bins then have respect and take your rubbish with you. Like other problems caused by disrespectful campers, excess rubbish being left around campsites has forced closure of many sites around Australia. Get out there and have fun, practice, practice and practice and never let minor set backs get to you, they become great stories later on. Share your stories and tips but most of all enjoy your travels. BE RESPECTFUL Free camp spots have been closed in recent years due to the abuse of the camping areas, be respectful of the surroundings and other campers, stay tidy and clean and only leave foot prints.
