There are also different types of paddling activities which have varying intensity. SUP Racing is one of the highest intensity workouts you can have on a paddleboard. Paddling at a continuous pace over a specific distance either in open ocean or even on a lake will give you a massive calorie burn.

I don’t know about where you are but from where we are sitting it’s hot hot hot! January summer holidays are in full swing and the best place to be right now is by the water.

While SUP Touring, which is paddling for a long distance at a moderate pace without stopping will still be a significant workout but not quite as intense.

That means it’s the perfect time of the year for Stand Up Paddleboarding. Did you know that Stand Up Paddleboarding, apart from being one of the best family activities and ways to explore our incredible water ways, is also one of the best all body fitness activities? The Hawaiians have been using it for years for fitness when the waves aren’t up to scratch for surfing. You obviously use balance to stay upright on your board, and can include a great strength work out by paddling and propelling yourself through the water, however the intensity that you make your workout is completely up to you. Paddling in the waves in the ocean will obviously give you a higher intensity workout than drifting on placid waters, however this can still give you a decent all over workout that will work almost every muscle in your body, especially your core back and abdominal muscles. Stand Up Paddleboarding is a great fitness option for people who can’t do high impact exercise, and can be a fantastic cross training

alternative and often used by runners and cyclists who may be experiencing injury, or just as an alternative training activity because it is a form of simultaneous aerobic and strength training. Stand Up Paddleboarding has proven health benefits including substantially improved cardio fitness, which translates to other benefits like decreased likelihood of heart conditions, loss of weight and general wellbeing. Not mentioning the health benefits from just being in the environment and stress release being on the water gives.

Yoga on a SUP can be a fantastic workout not just for the body but a yoga practice on the water will also be an amazing way to workout the mind.

The most common type of stand up paddleboarding is recreational paddling. Even this gentle, casual, low impact activity can burn twice the calories of going for a walk. Anyone, of any age, and any fitness level can do Stand Up Paddleboarding. It’s the perfect summer fitness holiday plan.

As far as accommodation goes, there are many options available but Liquid Life and Leisure chose the incredible Ballina Beach Village. Perfectly located close to the river and the beach, this is a caravan park, resort and retreat all in one. Ballina Beach Village has two pools, kids playgrounds, a café and fantastic quality bbq and camp kitchen facilities and a kids club during the school holidays. It is easy to access some incredible natural activities such as nature walks, whale and

Once a month, on the full moon, the Ballina Beach Village Full Moon Experience is a popular regular yoga and healing retreat. A three day, two night program is facilitated by leading local holistic practioners and offers an amazing experience that includes yoga

practice, guided drum journey and sound healing, using the full moon’s energy. As well, the Retreat Centre, which is on-site hosts a number of other retreats throughout the year, as well as regular Yoga teacher trainer courses, usually for overseas guests. The atmosphere at Ballina Beach Village is relaxed and friendly, just like the town. It really is an ideal location to see all the incredible sights of the region, without the hustle and bustle of some of the busier towns on the coast.

FUNdraise for Farmers

A huge thanks to Liquid Life and Leisure for helping us organize things and donating some amazing prizes including the Engel fridge that the lovely Louise won simply by purchasing her ticket! Everyone had a great time from the youngest of kids right through to the ‘oldies’ and everyone in between. Our aim was to make it fun for everyone, and that’s exactly what it was.

FUNdraise for Farmers 2018 was a huge success and we are so humbled by everyone who pulled together to help make one of our dreams become a reality. A recent trip to Birdsville was the catalyst for the idea to put together a family friendly outback themed camping weekend to raise money for our struggling Aussie farmers. We love what the Barrumbuttock Hayrunners do and have decided to

support them. They are a group of volunteers who deliver donated hay across Australia. Our funds are deposited directly to the Rotary Club of Sydney who give it straight to the Haryrunners with no fees or money deducted. This year we have managed to raise $7830 which we are really proud of. There are so many people who contributed by sharing, including radio stations and local councils and

businesses. It’s amazing what we can do when we all pull together! The weekend was the perfect combination of relaxing, activities, eating, drinking, swimming, resting, riding, dancing, talking, sharing and enjoying the company of friends both old and new. And you can’t forget the prizes – we had so many to give out that we had more more prize draws than songs during Tyson Colman’s set on Saturday night!

Bigriggen is big enough for people to spread out and do their own thing, or park in groups next to others, or in their own little space. We found out on the Saturday morning that one group of about 5 families headed back down the other end of the park, plugged in the generator and cranked the tunes until 2am … and we didn’t hear a thing! Everything about FUNdraise for

Farmers was a huge success and we want to once again thank everyone who helped out. An invitation is extended to anyone who would like to be involved next year, to contact us. It’s a great feeling to be a part of something so worthwhile and we would love to have you on board with us. We are aiming for a weekend late in October, but the date hasn’t been confirmed yet, so please stay tuned.

Hi! I’m Miriam, and with my partner Chris, we have started Aussie Destinations Unknown; an online presence dedicated to showing off all this wonderful country of ours has to offer and all the adventures we have along the way.

World Gym Southside Aussie Fitouts MiMFiT Autobarn Loganholme Brandcraft River 94.9 Bigriggen Caravan RV Camping Aussie Family Roadtrip Lions Club International of Underwood Tyson Colman Celtic Cowboys

I’m a Lifestyle Coach, Personal Trainer, Certified Nutrition Coach and am interested in all things holistic and healthy. I have owned my business MiMFiT for about 20 years now and I teach many group fitness classes each week – including Zumba which I love! I was born in Launceston, Tasmania and moved overseas when I was 8. I spent my childhood years as a missionary kid in Costa Rica, the Amazon Jungle and the Andes Mountains of Ecuador.

Aussie Destinations Unknown is a caravanning and travel blog dedicated to adventurers, explorers and lovers of Australia. It is for families with kids, and for couples travelling alone; for those who go in search of genuine, real-life experiences and exciting destinations across Australia. It is also for those who while may not be travelling, still love to experience our great country through our adventure narratives and photography. Aussie Destinations Unknown is the beloved project of Chris, Miriam and their three children; your average Aussie family with a passion for adventure and a love of caravanning. We hope to inspire you to create your own adventures and invite you to share in ours.

I returned to Launceston in 1996 where I stayed for a while before moving to Adelaide and then Hobart. It’s think it’s obvious why I love traveling so much! I finally settled in South East QLD and have made this my permanent happy place. This was where I met Chris back in 2010 … We met online while I was still in Hobart and he was here waiting for my car to cross the border! Our very first ‘in person’ date was a 4WD day trip to Queen Mary Falls and Condamine Gorge. Chris comes from a background of extreme sports such as moto X, mountain biking and stand up jet-skiing (and he has a long list of previously broken bones to prove it!).

Chris has lived in South East QLD since he was 2 years old, and most of his family live in Cairns. Because of this, he spent many of his childhood years with his cousins, aunties and uncles exploring the Great Barrier Reef, islands, waterfalls, swimming holes and other spectacular hidden gems that we would otherwise have had no idea about! We believe that life should be more than just working to pay for and live in a house, so we’ve built our lives to allow us to travel as much as we can in our 23ft Jayco Starcraft. We both love our jobs but we’ve found great joy and freedom in regularly breaking away from the ‘rat race.’ We share a passion for exploring and adventure that has become a way of life we want to live permanently. Hi! I’m Miriam, and with my partner Chris, we have started Aussie Destinations Unknown; an online presence dedicated to showing off all this wonderful country of ours has to offer and all the adventures we have along the way.

Aussie Destinations Unknown is our dream put into action.

THE MOST RECENT STORIES FROM THE ROAD

We have 4 kids between us; Cooper, Aylah and Charli are our younger 3 and my son Sam, who is much older. They are all great kids and the younger ones love adventuring with us. They each have their allocated jobs helping us with set up and pack up. It sure makes our lives a bit easier.

We’ve learned that life is most definitely what you make it. We’ve also learned to dream big and then work hard to make it happen. ?? We adventure locally around South East QLD and Northern NSW on weekends and around Australia on the longer breaks. We are really excited as our dream of hitting the road permanently, gets closer every day. Join us on our adventures, past and present as we continue to #livethedream and if you have a van and would like to join us, let us know! ??

Fitness on the Road 5 FREE FITNESS APPS THAT WILL HELP YOU REACH YOUR FITNESS GOALS

3

I’d be lying if I said a fitness app will make you leaner, stronger, or faster. It won’t. But there are some free fitness apps that will take the guess work out of what you’re doing. You’ll be able to reach your goals more quickly because you’ll have more clarity about your exercise and what you’re eating.

MY FITNESS PAL So you’ve started a food diary? Good. You haven’t? Check out Why the #1 Change to Your Diet Should be a Food Diary. This is the app to use once you’re ready to estimate your energy intake for the day… …or identify how much protein, fat and carbs you’re eating.

These are the top apps I recommend. Not just because they’re free, but because they each do a specific job:

1

STRETCH TIMER A simple countdown-timer where you can preset five different timers. Perfect for timing rest breaks, how long you’re holding a stretch, or time-based exercises (like planks).

4

METROTIMER This one is good if you have OCD (like me). If a program says I’m supposed to do 43 seconds of an exercise, I’m doing 43 seconds. Exactly. This app is handy if your hands aren’t free to press start on a timer. It’s a metronome, so just remember to set the beat at 60 rpm.

C25K

2

MAPMYRUN If you want to keep a set pace on longer runs this is the app for you. If you want to measure out some distances so you can do some interval training… this is also the app for you.

5

Also known as “couch to 5 k’s,” this app does just that. It gradually gets you to running 5 km without even realising it. This is the program I used to get back to running after my ACL reconstruction. It’s slow and steady, and it really does win the race. This is one of the top free fitness apps… for now. Get in quick. Surely they’ll end up charging. It’s that good!

These apps will do the hard work for you. Not the exercise, that’s on you. But they will help you plan, measure, and progress.

FLAVOURS OF THE WORLD

At Gourmet Meals we celebrate multi-culturalism and Australia Day by incorporating a wide range of dishes in our menu which represent our customers’ different cultural, religious and ethnic backgrounds. We proudly supply delicious and nutritious dishes which have originated from all over the globe and showcase a diversity of flavours. Some of the many multicultural dishes we supply from around the world are listed below together with their countries of origin. “Not only do we celebrate multi-culturalism through our international range of meals but also through the diversity of our

staff. Our team members here at Gourmet Meals hail from Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland, Scotland, Slovenia, Turkey through to Indonesia, The Philippines, India, New Zealand and of course some dinky di, true blue Aussies! This “melting pot” of different cultures all contributes to the international influences and flavours of our meals.” Check out some of our range SPAGHETTI BOLOGNAISE Rich and wholesome, Spaghetti Bolognaise originated from Imola, near Bologna, in 18th century Italy. A popular dish on our menu and in Australian

homes, it is customarily prepared in Italy by sautéing onions, celery and carrot with minced or finely chopped beef and pork with tomatoes or, a tomato concentrate, added before being simmered to produce a thick sauce. Traditionally, the pasta used in the preparation was fettucine or pappardelle. At Gourmet Meals, in order to add a bit of extra goodness, we add eggplant and zucchini, and top it off with a mixture of grated parmesan and cheddar cheeses. BEEF STROGANOFF Creamy and fragrant, Beef Stroganoff was a dish originally prepared during the mid-18th

century in Russia by the wealthy Stroganoff family whose cooks were trained in France. The recipe generally involved sautéing lightly floured, very tender thin strips of beef, then adding a pinch of dry mustard and bouillon, before being finished off with some sour cream. It was served with crisp potato straws. In later years, the cooking method involved adding lots of thinly sliced mushrooms, onions and tomato paste to the beef recipe. We serve the dish with either mash or rice.

COTTAGE PIE Hearty and full flavoured, Cottage Pie was created in late 18th century Ireland. The name was derived from its humble heritage of being a dish served by the poorer Irish community who resided in cottages. When first cooked, it was initially prepared with a layer of beef mince in a gravy that was topped with mashed potato, then baked. Onions, peas and carrots were added to the beef mince in later recipes, and Gourmet Meals, again to make this dish even healthier, has added zucchini, increasing the

fibre, vitamin and mineral content. These are some of the many healthy and delicious dishes we create at Gourmet Meals which we individually customise to cater for our customers’ cultural, religious and ethnic preferences. All our meals are reduced in fat and salt, high in protein and fibre, gluten free, plus we also offer dairy free alternatives. Davos Do Australia WHAT WE’VE DONE WRONG

We haven’t free camped as much:

that we’ll never wear!

We planned on free camping the majority of the trip and staying in camping areas or van parks as a treat or when free camping wasn’t possible, well we free camped the first week and then haven’t since!

So don’t be like us and don’t pack the 13 jumpers, 9 pairs of shoes and the Gucci suitcase.....jokes people but you get the point!

We also stayed at Bullara Station for a week and worked for our accomm so I guess that can count as free but after that we got lazy and took the easy and most glamorous option most times instead.

What I mean by this is we spent the first 3 months of our trip in red dirt and now they are ruined, which means I can’t wear them when I’m high rolling at the casino on the 1 dollar table for blackjack!

The broken canopy window: We didn’t cover the rear window on the canopy with foam or a Perspex cover and we managed to smash the window with a rock that we believe bounced off our camper trailer! In my defence, I had never seen them covered until AFTER we broke the window This leads me to the next item... G’day, Matt here from Davos Do Australia, we’re a family of 3 (Sandy and Thomas making up the crew) and we’ve been on the road since mid year and we’ve recently notched up 15000kms in our camper! During this time on the road, we’ve learnt a lot, made some mistakes and very often wondered what were we thinking so we’ve put together a list of some of the things we have done wrong and mistakes we made that I hope others can learn from and not make the same mistakes as us, remember, everything and everywhere isn’t always ‘amazing’ ‘epic’ and ‘oh my god I’m blessed’ and I’m sure every travelling family has

had there moments on the road where it’s not all roses and chocolates!

we would spend but we have still spent way more than we should have!

Now this is our own list and somethings will or won’t be relevant and some you may not agree on but it’s relevant to us and our trip so chill out, relax and read on....

Don’t be like us, set and stick to a realistic budget!!

Not sticking to our budget: When we set off, we planned a set budget a week (after normal bills, rego, insurance etc) and we have successfully blown that out of the water by 3 times what we thought by doing all of the things that are mentioned below! Now maybe we underestimated what

Snacking at servos: We got lazy and instead of preparing meals of a morning or the night before when we were travelling, we instead would buy morning tea, lunch etc when we filled up on fuel, almost doubling our spend at times in one hit! Make sure to meal prep while also staying healthy and cost effective and don’t eat so much crappy food that affects the budget and also tightens the pants!!

We (I) put a toolbox and fuel tank on in FRONT of the rock deflector: Yep, what I thought would be a great addition and looked seriously awesome was as handy as a chocolate fire pit! I think the rock may have deflected off one of these and therefore cost us time, hassle and a whole lot of dollars, the resulting mess of glass and a canopy full of dust is something we don’t want to ever repeat. We didn’t fit a snorkel: This one is up to the individual but I didn’t fit a snorkel before we left as I

We packed good clothes:

ran out of time and was slack ordering it which meant we couldn’t do one of the things I was looking forward to! yep, good one dumb ass. Check what solar panel will suit: We got a good deal on a solar panel but as it turned out, it wasn’t suitable for our requirements, I should have taken the time to study up what we would need and brought the correct item, even if it cost a little more! We now have issues charging our batteries and have had to pay for powered sites at caravan parks when running the generator wasn’t an option. We stayed to long at some places: While most towns, camps etc we have loved, there has been a few times we have paid up front for a period of time, done all we could and then wasted time until the stay was up when we couldn’t get a refund! Brought to many clothes: I covered this in a previous post but it’s worth talking about again, we packed WAY to many clothes and we have worn maybe 1/4 of them! We packed for a journey and plans changed and now we have clothes

We didn’t budget for some attractions and tours: While we have seen some amazing (god, now I’m doing it to) things on this trip, we have also not budgeted to do some of them, resulting in the bank balance going as unfortunately, everything we seemed to do cost mega $$$ We big shopped in little towns: Now I know this will cause some commotion and some heated debate but we should have shopped in larger towns more often to save money when grocery shopping! Yes I know small towns need the money and we do buy fuel, supplies etc when required but sometimes you have to look after no 1 and if that means I save a heap of coin, then we’ll do that! We have drank and ate out too much: When we left, we told ourselves that we were going to get fitter, healthier and save money, well we are 0-3 with that at the moment!! We have eaten out to much and that’s cost us health wise and financially, it’s

We have eaten out to much and that’s cost us health wise and financially, it’s

cool as a treat every now and then but everyday is just silliness.

pay a small fortune on a cabin in Kalbarri.

But on another note, I’ve had a pretty good time drinking with fellow travellers, to good of a time sometimes......

Trying to call caravan parks in 100kph winds on top of sand dunes with no service wasn’t fun and actually a little stressful!

Doing what I thought others would want to see:

While I was ok with us being safe and dry after we found some accomodation and that’s worth more than anything, it showed us early to at least have a fall back plan!!

When we started this trip, we had a plan to see some sites and attractions but we found ourselves doing trips and seeing things that we thought others would like see more than us, doing things just to post on social media that we weren’t fussed on actually doing! I’ll admit it and say we got caught up in the hype of social media big time! Fuel apps: We have various apps for saving money and haven’t used them near enough, I paid 6 cents a litre more in one town when there was a cheaper option 100m up the road. Download and study a fuel APP people! We grossly underestimated our fuel usage: When we had our first test trip, we had a decent fuel mileage that we could work off, add the extra weight of items for a 12 month trip, plus losing aerodynamics with roof racks and baskets, our mileage is a quarter more than what we thought and that adds up. We chose not to bring our good camera: While an IPhone can take decent pics

and you can filter the bejesus out of them pics so even a politician looks honest, go pros are cool to as are drones, but theres nothing like a good quality camera! We have a very decent canon at home that’s currently sitting in storage.........because why would you want to take amazing pics of the amazing (there I go again) places on your once in a life time lap around Australia........ Don’t be like us, I have no words for this, we buggered up!! We didn’t have a back up plan: While we are winging our way around on the lap, it’s good to have plan B in case of, well, anything really! We got caught at lucky Bay with severe winds and storms coming in and had to leave, we didn’t know what was close or where to go so we had to

We packed, well, everything: As a back up, I brought a 240>12v battery charger, jumper leads, spare deep cycle jump battery, solar panel, 2000w generator and a trickle charge charger, as well as having dual batteries in the ute and the Anderson plug, plus two 105 amp hour batteries in the camper! I also packed 3 tool bags as well as

having more parts than a Toyota dealer, while good in theory, it was very heavy and took up a lot of room! I also brought car care gear, rags, spare chains, D shackles and everything else super cheap were selling, definitely waaay to much! Be better prepared earlier: When we planned our trip, we weren’t going to worry about a canopy or bullbar........well slap my ass and call me Shirley!! We not only ended up getting both but a roof basket too, which then turned into a massive toolbox on the roof which created stress that we didn’t need and more cost that we hadn’t really counted on, which also in turn meant we were as wind resistant as a giant brick! So do a list, prepare early as possible, read others posts, do some study and be ready well before you go, we were packing at 8pm the night before we left! Travel with the right gear: While our new hilux has been unbeatable and as much as I love having a camper we aren’t so sure if our brand and style was up to the job of what we wanted it to do. We have spent a huge amount of money on it and this is our fault for maybe not studying our options, shopping around more and taking our time to buy the right one! Maybe we’ve had a bad run but I’m not so sure, and now the “manufacturer” doesn’t stock the parts and we have to go elsewhere! Our fault and no one else’s!

“Edit” after writing this, I have seen pics of campers losing there complete suspension, axles breaking and rims failing so maybe we weren’t so bad! Not enough music: A person can only listen to a song so many times before you hate it and never want to hear it agin, I’m like that to all ours now! 700 songs wasn’t enough!!

So there you have it, things that we have done wrong, mistakes we’ve made and issues we’ve encountered! Safe travels everyone! Matt Davison

There are a lot of house sitting membership websites out there, and honestly, most of them are pretty good.

CONTACT US www.familyfriendlyhousesitters.com

About

You’re a Home Owner?

The family focused house sitting community

You want confidence that your home is cared for while you’re away. You don’t want to spend your holiday wondering if you’ve left the oven on, or there’s been a leak. If you have pets, you just want to make sure they’re loved. A house sitter is the perfect solution… and what better way than with a family.

Looking for a House Sit? You’re looking in the right place if you want to make sure that all the homes listed are family-friendly. We’re here to help create the perfect match between families and homes

But… they seem to allow anyone to join, and aren’t necessarily family friendly. Some of them are even set-up to exclude families from applying! We’re Natalie and Michael Peachey, and we created Family Friendly House Sitters because it’s the site we would want to join.

Well for starters, it’s the only family focused house sitting community. Yes, we still allow home owners to create a listing if they don’t have kids at home… but it’s a condition of membership that all home owners are willing to accept family house sitters.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT ON THE SITE?

Personally, we’ve also had some ‘varied’ experiences when it comes to house sitting. Why? Because these were organised through social media. We quickly realised that a stress-free house sit really boils down to two things. Firstly, knowing if you’re a good fit for each other, and then good communication about what’s required. So we’ve designed home listing templates and house sitter profiles to include the information we wish we knew in the past. Also, our handover checklists make sure that everyone is on the same page. We love surprises, just not when it comes to house sitting! You’ll also get blog posts where we share the things that we and our member community have learned. Sure, at lot of this will be about having a successful house sitting experience. We’ll also share content and product reviews to generally help you on your travel.

Bush’n it on a budget

and a toddler in tow it did make things a little more

nerve racking. We knew this was the right thing for us to do. We knew we had nothing to lose, and we knew we could stop if it wasn’t working out.

WHAT DO WE TRAVEL IN? We have a 15ft 1999 Gazal Infinity pop top

caravan and a 2010 Ford Ranger XLT. Truthfully, we didn’t have thousands of dollars to buy the perfect set up and we didn’t want to loan any

money to make it a reality. The name bush’n it on a budget comes from the fact you really don’t have

to spend a fortune to live your dream. We got both our van and car and kitted them out with

everything we need for less than $30,000 (and we

have met people doing it and enjoying life as much as everyone else with much cheaper set ups!). We were worried an older van might cause us

some problems along the way, but its been perfect and only had little things that need seeing to that Lorry has been able to do himself.

Our car also has a rooftop tent so if we want to travel

of caravanning, from grey nomads,

Trail-A-Mate is one such product that really does live up to the hype. Trail-A-Mate is a Hydraulic jockey wheel that converts to a jack and it really is as easy as swapping the wheel for a solid base plate. The jack gives you the ability to jack up a caravan with an aggregated mass (ATM) of up to 2,900kg. For caravans weighing over this there is a Trail-A-Mate Mark II that will meet your needs.

Trail-A-Mate is fully compliant with the Australian mandatory safety standards and with more than 160

It’s not worth the risk of using a jack incorrectly when it can mean death or injuries that result in amputation or fractures from being crushed under the weight of a vehicle that has fallen off a jack.

can operate it with minimum effort and from a standing position, which will definitely save your back! Also important is having the jockey wheel and jack as one piece of equipment, which minimises what you need to pack. That means more space for that extra fishing rod.

It’s not just caravans that the Trail-A-Mate can be used for though. It can be used on any trailer, horse float, motor home or food van and over the last few years caravan manufacturers have begun to fit the Trail-A-Mate engagement fittings to the chassis, making it even easier to use. 233 Shepherds Hill Road Eden Hills SA 5050 Phone: (08) 8278 5107 | Email: info@trail-a-mate.com.au

The Esplanade Park & Tourist Wheel

Located across the road from the harbour is Esplanade Park, the perfect place to pull out a picnic rug and kick back and relax in the shade of the Norfolk Pines. If you have kids or are a kid at heart then make your way to the Esplanade Youth Plaza; a world class $1.6M plaza that has one of the most impressive skateboarding areas ever seen in Perth. And for some epic aerial views over the harbour, take a ride on the impressive Fremantle Tourist Wheel and be taken 40m high in a fully enclosed gondola.

Rainbow Sea Containers

“Somewhere over the rainbow” you’ll find Freo... On your way home you must stop at Beach Reserve and admire this amazing sea container sculpture by Marcus Canning that was constructed in 2016. The 9metre high sculpture consists of nine customised and coloured sea containers, carefully joined to form a rainbow that stretches 19 metres wide. The monumental structure is the largest commission for the City of Fremantle Public Art Collection. The rainbow overlooks the Swan River as well as the container port and is lit up at night too making for some great photos! We hope you enjoyed your day exploring Fremantle and love the city as much as we do!

We snapped up some halfprice tickets on Groupon so keep an eye out to snag a bargain.

The Shipwreck Galleries

Next up is a visit to Western Australia’s Shipwreck Galleries, just a quick stroll across from the park. The museum is housed in a gorgeous fully restored Commissariat building from the 1850s and houses hundred of relics from ships wrecked along WA's treacherous coastline, including the original timbers from the Batavia (wrecked in 1629). The museum is recognised as the foremost maritime archaeology museum in the southern hemisphere and is free to enter (donations welcomed). If you love maritime history, then you should also check out the WA Maritime Museum which is home to the winning America’s Cup yacht, Australia II, an Oberon class submarine and many other iconic vessels from WA’s maritime history.

As with most urban myths, there is a bit of fact mixed in with misinformation. This Standard specifies manufacturing requirements for welded carbon and stainless steel cylinders with water capacity not less than 0.1kg or more than 150kg. The Standard does NOT reference any application restrictions.

LPG & SAFETY Firstly I would like to introduce myself. My name is Craig Morgan. I am a qualified mechanic and Lpg fitter. I have been in the RV industry for many years and have been the service manager for a major dealership in the Adelaide area for around 6 years. In this time I have dealt with many lpg related issues and repaired gas systems for customers during this time. Many people don’t understand lpg and are frightened by it. However I hope I can help explain what you need to do to keep yourself safe and have a reliable system for many years. Firstly I will discuss lpg cylinders, every cylinder has to be stamped with a date of testing. Whether this is at the time of manufacture or re complying after expiry. All cylinders are to be retested at a period of ten years. Now this doesn’t mean you cant use the lpg left in the cylinder, it is illegal

to refill the cylinder after this expiry date. There are many testing stations around that will perform the required test and restamp of your cylinder or you can purchase another. Another choice is to use the `swap and go’ cylinders available at many service stations, hardware stores and lpg suppliers. There are some `myths’ that are going around that the quality rating for caravans has to be a certain number, this is not true. The number stamped on the cylinder is just a rating for paint coatings. There have been a number of discussions on various online forums relating to the type of gas bottle required for use on caravans. However, the comments being shared in these forums are perpetuating urban myths that have no basis in fact. Specifically, claims that you can only use gas bottles with certain Coating Classification Codes on a caravan and that the use of

the wrong gas bottle could void your insurance. There is no truth to either of these contentions. Caravan gas bottles & holder in summary: • There are no caravan specific standards, including types of coatings, which apply to the gas bottles themselves.

These are abrasive blasted, then coated with a base coat and a zinc rich top coat.

Classification Code 3: These are sprayed with a single layer of a zinc coating.

Classification Code 4: These are sprayed with a primer and a polyester top coat.

There are four Coating Classification Codes in this manufacturing Standard.

This would be the least durable finish.

The Classification Codes are stamped into the neck ring of the gas bottles. Depending on the Classification Code, the number 1, 2, 3, or 4 will appear within a 10mm circle. The lower the number, the more durable the finish.

• There are very specific requirements on how and where you store the gas bottles in and on a caravan.

The Coating Classification Codes

• The total number of gas bottles that you can legally carry is subject to control and can vary based on different state regulations.

These are hot dipped galvanised gas bottles.

• Gas bottle holders must withstand a 4g load.

Classification Code 2:

Classification Code 1:

There are NO Specific Requirements for Caravans however I have mostly seen classification 2 fitted to most caravans. In reference to the first myth, there is not, nor has there ever been a prohibition regarding the use of any Coating Classification Code gas bottle on a caravan. Many, many years ago there was a common sense “recommendation” suggesting that Code 4 bottles would not be ideal for continuous exposure on a caravan tow bar.

This was never a ban and even the recommendation vanished from the Standards many years ago. I would like to cover what to look for when checking over your caravans lpg system. Let’s start at the cylinder, connect your cylinder and turn the gas on. I do advise my customers to invest in a gas safety valve. This is fitted to the cylinder and the hose is fitted to the valve. This is invaluable for safety if a hose blows off or a fitting breaking. It will shut the supply off to limit the escape of gas. If you have a cheap spray bottle fill it with detergent and water. Spray all the hoses, fittings, lpg regulator and cylinder connections liberally. Any leaks will form bubbles and you can identify any areas that require attention. If you do see bubbles forming on a join or a fitting you can try to tighten it first. A lot of the time I find loose fittings as they can shake around when the van is being towed. If this doesn’t fix your leak then I advise getting an lpg fitter to repair it.

This would be the most durable finish but these bottles could cost 3X what a normal caravan gas bottle would cost.

The Australian Standard Explained To explain, a bit of background is in order.

EMPANADAS

Well another Christmas day has come and gone, and I hope you all had a fabulous one, I certainly did. Now it’s the New Year, and what to do with the Christmas and festive season left overs.

store-bought roast chicken, but it works a treat with any meat leftovers. If you don’t have a lot of meat to use up, cut back on the other ingredients in the recipe. The flavours in the empanada mix, take the leftovers in a completely different taste direction. You may just need to adjust the seasoning. For example, ham cut back on the seasoning as its generally a saltier meat. Another left over roast idea and one I use often is rice paper rolls. This is my plan tomorrow and I’m excited. Shredded roast meat, coriander, crunchy carrot, Japanese mayonnaise, (kewpie) crushed peanuts (use salted), cucumber, spring onions and bean sprouts with a sweet chilli dipping sauce (homemade, preferably)) You can’t go wrong. Any ham once again works a treat, these salty meats and rice paper rolls are really good

Actually, these ideas are perfect for any time of year when you find you have left over meat, or its time to clean out the freezer. No meat left over, these recipes and ideas can work for vegies too.

Nine times out of ten the left overs come from the pork, the big bird or a ham. If seafood was your fancy, it usually gets eaten on the day or shortly after. Will seafood work in an empanada, hell yes, go for it. The last few years I’ve gone for a goose, slow roasted on the weber, just delicious, and the little meat I had leftover, well the empanadas were just as amazing. If you haven’t had a goose before I highly recommend it. Christmas indulgence at its best. Empanadas are a delicious way to use up any leftover roast, bird, beast or vegetables. buddies. How to make rice paper rolls, have a google, they are easy. My one tip is to roll on a brand new clean chux wipe. It will soak up any excess water from the softening process. Rice paper rolls need to be dipped briefly in warm water, but they do not like to be wet. Trust me. Other great quick fix ideas are pizza toppings and tacos, always a winner. Soup is another great idea especially with the left-over bird. Make a stock with the bones, see below. I have a weakness for Chinese chicken and sweet corn soup. Use creamed corn and kernels, stock and the meat, shredded. Thicken when it comes to the boil with a whisked egg, stirring fast to create the thin egg ribbons in this classic soup. Season with a dash of light soy sauce and I personally like a pinch of ground white pepper.

So, do not throw the bones away. Roasted bone stock is the best, so much extra flavour with roasted bones. Remove any meat so you can use later. Add the bones, brown onion, skin and all. Roughly chopped carrot and celery, some parsley, peppercorns, bay leaf and a little salt to a large saucepan. Cover with water and bring to boil, reduce heat and let simmer for about 1 hour. Strain, cool to room temp, then chill in the fridge. This will allow the fat to sit at the top, so you can remove it, leaving you with a beautiful, healthy stock. It freezes so well. Defrost and use as you wish. Any questions please, please feel free to ask. Hunt me down on Facebook and send me a message. Always happy to discuss the amazing delights of our culinary world.

Empanadas Ingredients · 2 legs and 1 breast of roasted chicken (stuffing can be added, extra flavour) · 2 finely diced onions · 1 1/2 teaspoon paprika · ½ teaspoon each of cumin, ground ginger and cinnamon · ½ cup chopped coriander · ½ cup toasted pine nuts (slivered almonds can also be used) · ½ cup currants · 1 teaspoon salt · ½ teaspoon pepper to taste · 2 ½ tbsp. pomegranate molasses (substitute with balsamic glaze) · 1 tbsp. lemon zest · 1 packet puff pastry · 1 egg and 100mls milk (if baking) · 2 litres vegetable oil (if frying) this can be strained and reused

Method

Toast pine nuts to release their flavour Remove chicken meat and stuffing from the bones. Reserve bones for stock (see above) Roughly chop chicken and pull apart stuffing into small bits. Gently fry onions till transparent, no colour. Add spices, currants and pine nuts.

crispy. You can even make them bigger and flatter than the ones pictured for easy frying. Go ahead and have a play, it’s empanadas all the way!

Stir in chicken and add pomegranate molasses, salt and pepper. Zest in lemon, little at a time, taste and if required add more. Mix all ingredients well. Chill, pastry doesn’t like hot fillings, check seasoning, and roll into pastry. I choose puff. If baking oven brush with egg and milk mix (egg wash) If deep frying, you are ready to go.

Now enjoy. YUM! Notes As I said earlier the chicken in the recipe can be changed to any roast meats, cooked mince, seafood and leftover vegetables. The Gold Coast Hinterland, Australia, is home to humanitarian denim brand Outland Denim. Outland Denim, recently worn by the Duchess of Sussex multiple times during the 2018 Royal Tour, aims to bring the worlds of its seamstresses and customers closer together by facilitating training, employment, and career progression to women who have experienced, or are at risk of experiencing human trafficking or other injustices

The label began its jean-making journey when founder James Bartle had a fortuitous encounter with an anti-trafficking group, and then travelled to Asia and to see first-hand how human traffickers prey on vulnerable young girls in order to service the sex industry. After learning that once a girl has been rescued and rehabilitated, a sustainable career path is vital for securing her future, James created

Camp Spots - Our Favourite Kid Friendly Camp Spots Near Brisbane If you've been looking at a kid friendly relaxing getaway that is close to Brisbane then here are three of our favourites. We have one bush camp, one camp ground and one caravan park to cater for everyone camping tastes.

Bluff Creek Kenilworth Bluff Creek is easily our favourite bush style camp spot. Located at Kenilworth, it is a simply no thrill camp ground that lets you get back to nature, reset and really enjoy the simple things and each other. It is a beautiful scenic drive to the camp spot that is easily found, but watch out for echidnas that sit on the side of the road. Nestled just 10 minutes from Kenilworth it is an ideal location to explore the cheese factory and have a wander through the town. My kids love the park located opposite the cheese factory, which is a great spot to bring a picnic. There are so many things that makes Bluff Creek stand out, but most and foremost is the owners, they're simply amazing. It is fantastic seeing the kids just playing and using their imagination, which is why it has also become one of my kids favourites. kenilworthcampgrounds.com 44 Wilcox Road, Kenilworth QLD

Cobb & Co Nine Mile Camping Grounds Cobb & Co is one of those camp spots that you will remember for a lifetime. It is so kids focused and trust me, your kids will beg you to return. Cobb & Co has more to offer in terms of amenities than Bluff Creek so if you want a bit more luxury while still feeling like you are away from the rat race, this will fit your needs perfectly. What they do amazing is put the kids first, what this does to you is, it gives you a break! Their playground is fantastic and will have the kids playing for hours. But it doesn’t stop there, enjoy a show (for free) that the kids will love, maybe a tractor ride, or why not try the petting zoo! Nope not enough? Bring your BMX and use the bike track or if that hasn't worn the kids out take them to the billabong for a swim.......gezzz just saying all that has me needing a drink! Cobb & Co has your relaxation sorted, it offers a holiday experience that will make the whole family relax. http://www.cobb-and-co-nine-mile-camping-grounds.com/

Treasure Island So close and easy to get to, Treasure Island is a caravan park come resort that will leave most Gold Coast resorts in its wake. Treasure Island is amazing to put it simply, it is so kid focused it will have you return year after year. This is the premium of all three camp spots, with modern resort style amenities and is perfectly located just outside of the Gold Coast. What you can expect here is not only a place for the kids to enjoy but you will too. The first thing to do is find the kids club - perfectly placed next to the bar, for your convenience of course. The kids club is next level and is run like a Swiss clock. Make sure you bring the family to dinner and enjoy the fun games such as trivia night that will have the whole family cracking up. The park really has everything you could ask for and more. nrmaparksandresorts.com.au/treasure-island/ Address: 117 Brisbane Road, Biggera Waters, Queensland 4216 .

Once the family was on board, Belinda needed to find a unique style of accommodation that was easy to construct and was financially viable and more importantly, that would offer a unique experience for visiting guests. She discovered a geodesic dome structure while researching and noted that dome structures were becoming popular right around the globe in various climates. Enormous efforts have been made to reduce the domes impact on the environment, including the establishment of the eco-friendly wastewater system and off the grid power supply.

N EW SO U T H WA LE S ’ F IR S T L UXURY DOM E ACCOM M ODATION HAS OPEN ED A personal project of grazier’s Jamie and Belinda Munsie, Faraway Domes is the most recent luxury accommodation for those wanting their own exclusive get-away. Set on the owners 9,000 acre working beef and sheep property in the region of Warialda, New South Wales, Faraway Domes will offer guests first class comfort with minimal carbon footprint in a truly unique and private environment.

Faraway Domes encapsulates the ethos of modernity, environmental awareness and luxurious simplicity. With panoramic views of the stunning surroundings, this dome is perfect for those wanting their own exclusive get-away.

The Munsie’s have experienced the driest conditions in 100 years and knew they had to diversify their 9,000-acre mixed farming business to safeguard the future of their family operation for generations to come.

FAR AWAY D OM ES BAC KGR OU N D : Jamie and Belinda Munsie are third-generation beef producers on “Willunga”. Due to the changing climate, Belinda saw a necessity to diversify their family business to ensure it’s not solely dependent on the weather.

“The dry conditions have taken a toll on the district, but this project has brought our family together at one of the toughest times in our history on the property. It’s also provided a good distraction from the dry conditions and given our family hope for the future,” said Belinda, co-owner of Faraway Domes. Developed to attract more visitors to the region and boost local tourism while preserving nature, Faraway Domes is an east facing, self-contained private geodesic dome structure perfectly built for two. The structure is the first of its kind in New South Wales, featuring a luxurious king size four poster bed, open plan living and kitchen area, private bathroom and four-meter high elevated deck with private outdoor bath, the result is unlike anything the region has seen before. “We have such a beautiful region and we’re really excited to showcase this to visitors interested in escaping to the country and connecting with nature,” said Belinda. “We hope to lure guests from all over Australia and around the globe to experience a uniqueness second to none staying in our geodesic domes that feature in world class resorts across the globe. The district has so much to offer and we are confident a visit to Faraway Domes will leave an indelible mark on anyone who stays.”

In 2016, Jamie and Belinda visited the USA and it was then they were inspired to start Faraway Domes. They saw so many ranches being utilised for tourism, which brought additional economic benefit to the farming operation, while also attracting tourists to the different areas.

During their travels throughout Canada and Alaska, they were surrounded by travellers who had never travelled outside metropolitan areas and were seeing wildlife for the first time. This was a foreign concept for Belinda and Jaime who have wildlife on their doorstep every day. Belinda then realised the great potential for more tourism opportunities in Australia, particularly on farming properties. The accommodation gives city residents an opportunity to visit the real Australian outback, not just the hinterland of coastal towns or the scenic rim of major cities. Now was the perfect time for Belinda to put her idea in to action, to help deal with the current extreme drought conditions being experienced throughout Australia.

This hopefully is the first of many dome structures to be erected at Faraway Domes and is now open to the public for bookings seven days a week.
