Tiffin Motorhomes is proud to be one of the few family-owned manufacturers in the industry, and it makes a significant difference in how our company operates versus our competitors. For starters, with the Tiffin name on every coach, building a superior motorhome isn’t just our occupation. It’s a matter of personal pride, a pursuit we have committed our lives to perfecting. The birth of the Allegro Breeze in 2011 opened the door for a luxury Class A diesel pusher coach narrow enough for Australian regulations. Sure, Tiffin had been producing beautiful, bigger

coaches for several decades at this stage but the ‘compact’ size of the Breeze made it a perfect candidate for the Australian market and since then, has been supplied from our dealership on the Gold Coast.

Powering the Breeze’s energetic ride is an assertive Cummins ISV5.0 V8, the result of a three-year collaboration between Tiffin and Cummins. Designed, developed, and tested on the Breeze PowerGlide chassis, the ISV5.0 exceeds traditional diesel engines in durability, reliability, and performance.

The Allegro Breeze comes in a variety of paint schemes outside opening up to a range of cabinetry and decor options inside. At Tiffin Motorhomes, we build for quality first and foremost, limiting our production to ensure meticulous craftsmanship. It may not be the most business-savvy way to run a company but it is the best way. By investing the time and effort to do things right, we want you, as a Tiffin owner, to have the utmost confidence in your coach, as well as a peace of mind you won’t find with other manufacturers. You see, not only do we stand proudly behind our product, we stand behind you as well.

We are social! Follow us today!

Welcome LL&L Legends and Merry Christmas What a year it has been for us here at Liquid Life & Leisure. The saying goes “nothing ventured nothing gained” and this is so true. On so many levels this saying would resonate with not only myself and our team here, but also all of you travelling out there. If you did not venture away from the well-travelled roads, would you come across those amazing little hard to reach idyllic spots? If you did not leave the comfort of your living room, would you have all those amazing valuable dinner time stories and memories to look back on? It has been the same here in our office. Our business has had a lot of risk over the last 12 months. Risk that could have easily not been taken, had we not though would we be where we are now? Risk that had our family have to tighten our belts, scale back, and focus on the experience and memory making in our lives and not the materialistic, I must have this, I must have that type of life. This risk has absolutely rewarded us in so many ways. During the last 12 months our Liquid Life & Leisure brand has grown,

developed and continues to be a great inspiring and informative read and this has always been our vision for this publication. A place where people can share their stories to inspire others, where business can display their product or service to help others. This venture has been so rewarding and there have been so many gains. “Nothing ventured, Nothing Gained”, venture and you will gain. Live outside your comfort and you will grow, you will learn and you may just find what it is that makes your heart sing, that makes you bounce into your day, day in day out. This holiday season, find the time to explore, enjoy that wrong turn you take because who knows it may just have an incredible destination and opportunity attached to it that you would not ever have got there had you not taken a bum steer. Having control of one’s life, yes can bring an organised world, can bring results and can bring great accomplishments and it is a requirement to some point to success, however in saying this don’t be afraid to let it spiral into an organised fun chaos at times. Learn to relax and enjoy, learn to laugh, smile and be in that moment. Control

does not let you be in a moment, it has you controlling that moment, be sure to learn to release yourself from these places when you are not in “work mode” your kids, your family and your friends need to see you as the person they love you the most for and so do you. We have such a full edition this December and it showcases so many stories, lives on the road, things happening around this great country and those businesses that help us with our safety and travels. Take a look, everyone has a story, everyone is trying to make their mark in this amazing world and we love bringing you this mag every month. Merry Christmas to you all, and for those getting away have a very safe, fun, loving and adventurous holiday full of laughs, experiences and memories. Be sure to smile and see the positive side even when lost, broken down, bogged or other. Why because you will see past that moment and you will have the chance to look back on it and the memories of these moments are much better relived with a positive outcome and take it from me no one wants to sit next to a grumpy companion.

s e m a g th l a e w n o m m o c 8 1 0 2 t s a o c d l o g d e c n u o n n a m a e t n o l a th a i tr A new look Australian Commonwealth Games triathlon team has been unveiled on the Gold Coast – heralding an exciting era for the sport.

Joining automatic nominations Jake Birtwhistle (Tasmania), Ashleigh Gentle (Queensland) and Charlotte McShane (NSW) in the six-strong team will be discretionary selections, Queensland trio Luke Willian, Matt Hauser and Gillian Backhouse.

Hauser, who won the ITU World Junior Championship in Rotterdam this year, is the youngest on the team at 19 while McShane – a former ITU World Under 23 world champion is the oldest at 27.

Rio Olympian, Gentle, 26, is the sole survivor from the 2014 Commonwealth Games team from Glasgow and the only survivor from the 2016 Olympic team. The women and then the men will race for the first medals of the Games on

April 5 before the Mixed Teams Relay and Paratriathlon on April 7.

The full paratriathlon team, which already includes automatic nominees Bill Chaffey (NSW) and Emily Tapp (Queensland) won’t be finalised until the New Year. In what has been a breakthrough year for triathlon in Australia – the foursome of Birtwhistle, Hauser, Gentle and

“The men’s team features a young, fast trio led by Jake Birtwhistle, who although is only 22 has shown just how talented he is – Jake has an enormous future,” Drew said. “Our women’s team could not be in better hands following the breakthrough year from Ashleigh Gentle who has taken on all-comers in a stellar season, earning automatic nomination on the Gold Coast WTS race earlier in the year.” Australia has won six medals contested over three Games in Manchester (2002), Melbourne (2006) and Glasgow (2014) – two of them gold to Emma Snowsill and Brad Kahlefeldt in 2006. Both the men’s and women’s races will be full of the best triathletes on the circuit – including reigning women’s world champion Flora Duffy from Bermuda and England’s Brownlee brothers Jonathan and Alistair. But Birtwhistle is unfazed by a men’s field that could potentially see the Rio podium of both Brownlees and bronze medallist from South Africa Henri Schoeman and his teammate, the everpresent Richard Murray.

McShane produced a barnstorming victory to win the gold medal in the World Mixed Teams Relay in Hamburg. They followed up that performance and some standout results during the World Triathlon Series (WTS) season with strong results at the ITU World Championships in Rotterdam. Triathlon Australia’s Performance Director Justin Drew is excited about what is a new look team for these Games.

“I’m really looking forward to the Games – in fact I can’t wait,” Birtwhistle said. “My goal is to win the gold medal – I would be silly to be striving for anything less and I honestly see it as a realistic goal. “I am in that kind of position now where I believe I can win and I wouldn’t make claims that are unattainable. “After a few years on the circuit you get

the feel of who is the best and how you compare and on my day I know I am one of those guys now.” Charlotte McShane said being named in the team made it ‘real’. “Even though I did get that automatic selection back in July in Hamburg and of course I was very excited, being announced on the team with all the other athletes does make it real,” McShane said. “I really wanted to qualify automatically and when I did that and we won the Mixed Teams Relay it was one of the best weekends of my life. “And I couldn’t be happier to be on my first Games team in Australia on the Gold Coast. I know it’s going to be so much fun.” Backhouse, who threw everything she had at the Rio Olympic Games selection and missed the team said it meant: “A lot!” to make a major Games team and a home Games. “After the disappointment of Rio it took me a full season to get over it so while I was obviously hopeful of selection this time I didn’t have high hopes – it was a very open book,” said the Brisbanebased Backhouse, who was home in Armidale (NSW) when the news came through she was on the team. “I always wanted to make a major Games team and this one is obviously pretty special and I will be lucky enough to experience it – some people wait all their lives and don’t get that opportunity.”

n i y a t s tips to n o s a se ve i t s e f s i th shape December is here, and with its arrival comes an overload of various functions and festivities. For the most part, getting into the spirit of the Festive Season tends to involve excessive eating and drinking. But your health is paramount every single month of the year, including December. If you want to look and feel great when catching up with loved ones, and ring in the New Year feeling like the best version of yourself, then you need to exercise control.

tips to keep the indulgence at bay

1. BE PREPARED You need breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, regardless of what month it is. Even if you have a few nights out for dinners or functions during the week, that doesn’t mean you can fall off the wagon all together and blame it on the “Silly Season”. Plan around your social calendar and - every chance that you get - fuel your body with meals that are high in fibre and nutrients.

2. EAT BEFORE YOU GO TO A FUNCTION OR PARTY It’s so easy to graze on nibbles over the course of a few hours and not even realise how much food (and calories) you’ve consumed. But if you eat a healthy and balanced meal before arriving, you’ll feel full and be less tempted to hover around the snacks table. 3. CONTROL YOUR PORTIONS Planning meals and avoiding nibbles is a strong start, but probably the most important tip of all is to control your portion sizes. On Christmas Day, too many people fall victim to putting a bit of everything on their plate and going back for seconds (…or thirds). It is important to only serve up how much you need, not how much you want!

tips for g n i w o t r e f a s HOW TO CHECK YOUR CARAVAN IS SAFELY TOWED

When it comes to towing, there is no disputing it’s a skill which takes time and practice to manage comfortably. There are several factors that should be considered which can impact the “towability” of any trailer but particularly, caravans. THE TOWING VEHICLE Your towing vehicle is clearly one of the most important parts of your towing set up. It seems obvious that the vehicle must have the engine capacity and size to be able to tow safely. You must also consider the ratings of the tow vehicle and trailer as well as the effects of loading your tow vehicle up with gear as this may reduce the physical towing capacity of your vehicle. Also, it is a good idea to review the manufacturers specific criteria for your vehicle for towing by either checking your owner manual or contacting the manufacturer directly.

LOAD DISTRIBUTION & CAPACITY Loading your caravan correctly

is crucial to ensuring a safe and hassle-free journey. All items inside your caravan should be adequately stowed and restrained to minimise the risk of movement which can contribute to trailer sway and instability. Distribute the loads evenly. Remember that heavier items should be stored as low as possible and in the centre of the caravan as close to the axle group as possible. Only light items should be placed in the overhead compartments. While it might seem handy to simply fit an additional toolbox or jerrycan holder to the rear bumper or A-Frame of your caravan, these types of additional loads can have a substantial impact on its towability. These kinds of additions and modifications should be carried out by a trained and authorised person, ideally fitted by the manufacturer at the time of original production.

SERVICING AND MAINTENANCE Just like your tow vehicle, you

must get your caravan regularly serviced. Further to this, you should also conduct frequent maintenance checks on your caravan prior to heading off on any trip. Incorrect tyre pressures can contribute substantially to vehicle instability, It is also a good idea to regularly check the wheel nuts or studs to ensure they are tightened to the correct torque as specified by the manufacturer. TOWING AIDS Towing aids such as anti-sway

bars or hitches and electronic sway control units may reduce the effects of trailer instability however they do not necessarily eliminate or rectify the actual cause of the issue. While these towing aids may assist in keeping your rig inline if things get a little out of hand, it may be more effective to consider other factors such as load distribution and capacity in conjunction with towing aids.

s k r a p y discover g n i h s i f eden You’ve come all the way to Eden with your family. Your kids are pestering you to take them to something fun, and your wife wants to go on a bushwalk because she’s finished her holiday book already. In this situation, there is only one thing you can say… Get reel! Eden fishing gives you access to all kinds of fun. Enjoy the various types of fishing Eden has to offer, including game, reef, sports, estuary and rock fishing.

Before going however, there are some important questions about Eden fishing that you need answered. 1. WHO SHOULD YOU ENJOY EDEN FISHING WITH? There are a number of Eden fishing charters for you to choose from. Each charter gives you access to different areas. You can also save money by choosing to enjoy a shared charter or

get a private charter to stay on your game. Eden fishing charters suit all kinds of fishing experiences! Game, reef, and deep sea are all available in these waters. And if you’re keen to do something a little different, a few charters offer whale watching tours during migration season. 2. WHERE ARE THE HOTSPOTS FOR EDEN FISHING? Eden fishing spots are some of the richest and most diverse in the world. Game fishers can enjoy the Magic Triangle, incorporating areas from Red Point to Mowarry Point. Twofold Bay is also a great area for dropping a line if you’re looking for reef fishing, while land-based anglers should check out the beautiful Worang Point and the relaxing Curalo Lagoon. Where’s our favourite spot? Ben Boyd National Park’s rugged landscape and seclusion is fantastic for a day of land-based game fishing.

3. WHAT CAN I CATCH THROUGH EDEN FISHING? In fact, a better question would be “What can’t I catch through Eden fishing?” Offshore waters allow you to catch marlin, yellowtail kingfish and a number of shark breeds. Land fishing also gives you a fair amount of variety, with yellowfin bream, salmon and gummy sharks all available to be caught. However, the real winners when it comes to fish variety are the reef fishers, with hapuka, morwong, leatherjackets, snapper, flathead and blue-eyed trevalla. Fishing in Eden throws up a number of great fish for serious and amateur fishers alike. 4. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO EXPERIENCE EDEN FISHING? The best fishing Eden has on offer is available between December and May. During these months, the East Australian Current can run inshore and bring tuna to the area. You should also look to take part in one of the biggest annual events of the area, the Eden Amateur Fishing Competition in March. Men and women, boys and girls - you all have the chance to try your line at the prizes. Plus, it’s a fun weekend to spend time with family and friends on the water. 5. WHY IS EDEN FISHING SO HIGHLY REGARDED? Not only is Eden fishing a great way to spend your holiday, it is also one of the best places to enjoy a relaxing getaway in New South Wales. There are hikes, kayaking tours, and the historic Eden Killer Whale Museum. The culture of the area is built around the marine life, and fishing gets you up close and personal with everything the area has on offer. It is an absolute must for all serious and amateur fishermen alike!

THE RIGHT TIME IS NOW

For whatever reason, over the years there has been a misconception that the recreational lifestyle is either for the rich and famous or for the grey nomads. Have you ever considered the benefits of the outdoors, being a boat, a bike, a caravan or simply driving and exploring this continent of ours now?

Why wait till the body gets tired? Why wait till the kids have grown up and deprive them of the opportunity? Give consideration to the old saying “the right time is now. Australia wide we are entering the caravan and camping shows season. This not only allows to dream, it allows to see, feel and then purchase at a special show price that normally does not get repeated for the rest of the year.

The options are generally...

BUY

Get into it, take the plunge and give the couch at home a break. What you will get to see and do will never be on the TV screen and it will be with you forever.

UPGRADE

Most of the sellers will also take your old gear as trade in, they are short of stock, which allows you to jump into the new gear for much less outlay and without the fuss of trying to sell anything yourself.

STAY STILL Stay with what you already have but have your financial position checked.

FA M I LY

Westcorp Capital are fully equipped to go through your financial position with you and to pin point where improvements may be made, be it a refinance of your gear or a complete package which may even include your mortgage. There is hardly a case that cannot be improved. If you are in the market for the life changing plunge, contact Westcorp Capital before you make the final

commitment as they have put together show special packages that will be hard if not impossible to beat. We all hear on the news that the interest rates are at their lowest and in fact, the cycle of increase in interest rates has started. Now will be a good time to lock away some of your commitments with a fixed lower rate and isolate yourself from the movements of the money market.

The Art of a Mini Break.... Switch Off - Recharge - Live In The Moment

So you are too busy for a holiday, yet too stressed not to take some time out. You keep on pushing yourself to the limits and you put yourself and sometimes your relationship last. Why do we always over think a holiday? Why is a holiday always referred to as

one week, two weeks or even more? You would be surprised at what a two to four day escape can do for your mindset, stress levels and relationship. I would like to say we just enjoyed four days away. With a four hour drive from home, we loaded the caravan on Friday morning and headed away. The forecast was for rain all weekend,

however we both said that rain would not deter us from the break we needed. four days of fishing, paddle boarding, swimming, four wheel driving, exploring. So sure you still have to shop, but hey if you were at home you would too. Pack your bag, grab a couple cuts of meat, veggies and some salad, some cereal and swing by the bottle shop on the way for some beverages and what do you know you are away.

These mini breaks can come in the shape of a hotel room, cabin, glamping tent, normal tent, swag, motel, camper trailer or boat. Whatever your go to is just make sure you do it. Time is so valuable and so important. I was taught from a very young age that tide and time waits for no man. It is so true. In such high paced work lives, it really is important to not only recognise the signs when you need to switch off and gain some perspective but even more important learn to live without pushing yourself to such levels. Learn to schedule time for you, your family, and your partner. Book your dates and lock them in the diary, book your time out as this will be the first failure to this exercise if you don’t. If it is not in the diary how are you going to keep to it? Once you have blocked out the time, start to focus on where you want to go have a plan, this way you can get excited, look forward to it and talk to those around you about it. Book the campsite, the hotel, the day trip while you are there. Whatever it

is make the time to book it and get it finalised. One less thing on your mind and your plate. Print all receipts and information and put it in a folder so now you don’t have to worry about any of it until the time comes. Take the time away, and don’t look back. Switch off, recharge and totally live in the moment.

WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? Make 2018 your mini break year and live a simpler, in the moment and abundant life.

s se s a l g ll i non sp Silwy Australia is a family owned business based in Sydney, Australia. Owners Tim, and Pete have an eye for stunning products that make life easier, more enjoyable and solve problems so our customers can relax and spend more time enjoying life. Tim and Pete are avid campers and love a day out on the water with a long history of professional yachting and recreational camping where we love

taking the journey as much as time at the destination, and just getting out for a bit of fun. On a recent trip to the Germany in search of the next amazing product we came across the Silwy range and immediately saw it as something that the Australian public need access to. Having cir-cum navigated the globe Tim and Pete have lost track of how many drinks they have spilt and glasses

that have been broken due to the movement of the boat. So when they saw Silwy glasses they saw the benefits immediately. THE IDEA IS AS SIMPLE AS IT IS BRILLIANT! Are you sick of broken glass and drink spills? Wish you had a solution to solve your everyday problems? We welcome you to Silwy, the world’s first magnetic glass. We are an industry leading

supplier of the Sundowner Glasses a range of non-breakable poly-carbonate drinking glasses offered Australia wide at equitable prices. When coupled with the Stay-Put coaster, you no longer have to worry about accidentally tipping over your glasses. A magnet in the bottom of the Silwy glass makes it adhere to the adhesive coasters (aka Stay-Put coasters), the Silwy tables or any metallic surface around you. Meaning no more spills and breakages.

They say the most simple ideas are the best. This simple idea turned into the silwy-principle. silwy solves the problem of rattling of fallings cups or glasses in an innovative and attractive way. No one wants spilt drinks and broken glasses now you can relax with a hot or cold drink and know it will be safe and sound where you placed it thanks to the magnet elegantly embedded in the base of the glass.

When we decided in October 2015 that we were going to travel around Australia on a ‘Family Gap Year’, we knew nothing! We literally used Google and Caravan/4WD forums to educate ourselves, we spoke to a friend who did it 10+ years ago, then we bought a secondhand family van (Crusader Family Getabout) and a 4WD (Larry the Landcruiser - 100 Series) and took off 8 weeks later! Reflecting on this, we actually love the fact that we had very little time to think too deeply about it, otherwise we might have changed our minds!! Instead, we just rolled with it and did all of our learning along the way. After almost 600 days of travel, here’s our Top 10 tips for beginners.

1. YOU NEVER NEED AS MUCH STUFF AS YOU THINK YOU NEED! When you’re downsizing and preparing to pack for a trip around Australia, it’s hard to believe that you can fit your life into such a compact world. Our first attempt to pack the van had us loaded with 1.2 tonne of ‘stuff’. This is NOT a misprint!! We literally had EVERY cupboard filled with all kinds of things, after all, we were heading off for 12 months, we wanted to be sure. What we discovered from our multiple culling sessions prior to leaving, not to mention the fact that we needed to get rid of 700kg’s of weight, is that we needed to be brutal. We unloaded the 700kg’s of excess things, and still had plenty of things we didn’t ever need.

We ended up sending back home more stuff and donated bags and boxes of things we weren’t using along the way. When we returned home, we laughed about the fact that we still had things tucked in cupboards that we NEVER used, not once in the almost 600 days of travelling. Our advice to other travellers planning a trip is simple, just go and make a pile of things you think you’ll need, then sort through that pile and get rid of ¾’s of it. Trust us, you won’t miss it one bit! There’s honestly nothing we left behind that we wish we took with us!!

2. YOU’LL NEVER SEE EVERYTHING! It’s all too easy to begin listing the places you want to visit, the things you

want to see and the ‘must do’ items along the way, but if you’re planning like this, we say STOP! Travelling around Australia is an adventure, it’s an experience of a lifetime and it’s time to get rid of the checklist and just fly by the seat of your pants. This sounds strange coming from a list making family like ours, but we found that being too planned wasn’t good for the mojo. We knew that if we put pressure on ourselves to tick off a big list of places we must see, then we would miss the moments along the way. All too often we would land in a town and love it so much that we didn’t want to leave when we first planned, which meant missing out of going somewhere else we had potentially on our ‘list’. So we decided to just roll with it, throw caution into the wind and enjoy each day as it came, without any expectation that we would make it to every single place we wanted to go. It means we didn’t go to the tip of Australia, but what we lose in not seeing one place, we gain by experiencing more deeply another. No pressure = No worries!

3. BE FLEXIBLE! Flexibility is king! As a family that usually wakes up early, we found very quickly that the timing of sunrise and sunset differed significantly in Tassie than in

our home town of Brisbane. Before we knew it, our 5am start to the day quickly became a 7am start when the sun decided to rise. Home school starting at 8am quickly went out the door and it was very early on that we discovered the importance of being flexible. t only took about a week of father/ daughter melt downs and battles for us to realise that bed-time was later, school routine would differ and things didn’t work like they worked at home. That’s all part of the adventure. Another example might be that you think that you’re going to visit a town and stay for a week, then hate it and want to leave - so leave!! Don’t worry about what anyone else thinks or feels, you need to do what’s right for you and your family, so don’t be rigid in your thinking and just let the moments unfold as they come.

4. WIKICAMPS IS A MUST! If you haven’t heard of the Wikicamps app, stop reading right now and download it immediately. This app changes everything when it comes to choosing destinations to stay. You can setup filters based on the size of your rig, the luxuries (or lack thereof) you like and even budget! The best feature of the app is the feedback

and reviews from fellow travellers. We used the Wikicamps app every time we were planning our next destination and because you can use the map to search, it even took us to places we didn’t know existed for camping. We managed to ‘free camp’ and not stay in one single caravan park for the first 5 months of our trip. It quickly became a game for us, we would roll off to the next location and aim to find somewhere that wasn’t classified as a caravan park. Things changed when we hit the snowfields in Jindabyne, where we sought the comfort of power so we could run the heat on our air conditioner. This app is seriously gold, and well worth the small investment. Get on board, you’ll save yourself from mishaps along the way!

5. ON THE ROAD LEARNING IS JUST AS VALUABLE AS TEXTBOOK LEARNING! We homeschooled our girls from the start of the trip through to the end. They were in grades 3 and 4 when we left in December 2015 and recently returned to school after more than 18 months away. What is means is they missed an entire grade of school each, then they both also missed 3 terms of the next grade. How has this impacted them? Well, it’s different for each girl. Layla our

eldest is a structured, organised and at times quite spirited girl, she’s academic and introverted. In addition to the textbooks we took with us, which were the same books they would have used in the classroom, we focused on Layla’s social interactions on the road. Libby on the other hand is our social butterfly, she’s a good student in the classroom, but flourishes when it comes to relationships. Even as the younger sister, she steps up regularly to help Layla when she’s uncomfortable socially. Libby made so many friends on the trip and vividly remembers the experiences with each of them. She even made a new bestie (Tay) who I’m sure she’ll be friends with for life!! Now we’re back in the classroom after 7 terms away, both girls have gone into the right grade for their age, meaning they haven’t had to repeat a grade. We’re very proud of both girls for settling back into life in the classroom after almost 600 days away.

6. BE REALISITIC ABOUT EXPENSES! It’s all too easy to not think about expenses when you’re living the ‘dream’, but the reality is that there are still bills to pay and you can’t go into this thinking otherwise. If you’re not earning any money along the way, you’re best setting a budget for the known expenses, especially fuel, food and accommodation, which are the

biggest expenses along the way. It’s important to also factor in services for your car and rig, along with annual insurances and memberships. Don’t travel without the TOP RACQ (or equivalent) care and pay the extra money for it, trust us, it’s worth it. Most families indicate that it’s around $700 $1000 per week in expenses. This can vary significantly depending on your lifestyle and needs, but generally, we would estimate that each week it’s safe to budget $1000. Take the time to set a budget, estimate your expenses and then factor in room for the unknowns. We were fortunate that a regular income was sustained the entire journey, with Yas keeping her fulltime role and working flexibly - a huge bonus! It meant we could travel for longer, not be so strict with our budget and enjoy a coffee in the local towns when we wanted to.

7. BE WILLING TO WORK ALONG THE WAY TO EXTEND YOUR TIME! As mentioned in point 6, we were fortunate to have Yas retain an income as we travelled, but if this didn’t happen, we almost certainly would have looked to find some paid employment along the way. The ability to top up the budget would have surely been a factor here, but more importantly, we were keen to have that community connection. With Yas working, it meant we were often in

libraries each week for a few hours here and there. There were times when we knew there were working opportunities available, and we almost wanted to take them just to experience more in that town. With an income already coming in, we didn’t require the extra cash, so we gave it a miss. Next time around though, we’re keen to give it a try!

8. LIVE LOCAL! Living local is a ‘high point’ of our journey. We didn’t hang out in caravan parks and act like we were holidaying, instead we checked out local markets, walked the streets like we lived there, and just chilled. If we ever needed something, we shopped in Op Shops, which loved. Whether it was books, a piece of clothing or something else, we just loved exploring the various secondhand stores around town. We also visited Farmers Markets, and still to this very day, our favourite market location was a tiny little market outside of a large township, where there was local music and the farmers themselves were the people on the stall selling the goods. We taste tested our way around, let the kids roam free and felt like we lived there, it was pure joy!

9. DONT BE A TOURIST, THIS IS NOT A HOLIDAY, ITS AN EXPERIENCE! We were careful to choose the language we used to describe our journey. Often

people would call it a ‘holiday’, but we never really saw it that way. We always referred to it as our Family Gap Year, which wasn’t really a holiday, more an adventure or an experience. This also helped us ensure that we didn’t act like tourists every time we pulled up in a new town. We made a choice early on to live like locals, which means we would skip the tourist attractions and instead aim to do the simple things. We would typically visit the Information Centre, leave all the major brochures behind and stroll or ride around the streets getting to know the town. We are Geocacher’s, so this would take us to places we never would have otherwise gone. We kept the pace pretty level and didn’t rush around trying to fit everything in. We chose carefully which touristy type of activities we would invest time and money in, but most of the time, we explored on foot. We did a LOT of walking, and with two bookworms as children, we are pretty sure that we hold the world record for the most visits to libraries and book exchange stores throughout the country.

10. DONT TOW IN FIFTH GEAR! It wouldn’t be a ‘10 things’ list without this one! There’s a whole separate story to read on this one, but long story short, if you are driving a manual car, DON’T

ever use 5th gear when towing your caravan. The 5th gear is an overdrive gear, it’s not designed for towing and you’ll soon discover that you are destroying your gearbox by using it. We did only ever flick it into 5th when we were on the flat road, but all this did was shift the point in time when the gearbox would eventually fail. Thankfully for us we were only 20km out of a local town, but it did still happen almost in the middle of nowhere, just short of finishing our crossing of the Nullarbor and after almost 50,000km’s of travel. We laugh about it now, but let’s just put it out there that you should NOT make the same mistake we did!

All in all, there’s some great tips here for beginners and maybe even a few reminders for those out there already on the road. We have ZERO regrets for taking 18 months out of ‘regular life’ to explore our beautiful country and we regularly encourage others to take a leap and do it themselves!! If you’ve been thinking about it for years, it’s time to stop thinking and start planning, you won’t regret it.

t s e w th u o s g n i m a dre On Tuesday 17th October we started our 12 month adventure around Oz from Rockingham. We decided to venture south first and do the lap in an anti clockwise direction – following the sun! We have done a lot of the south west region before so we decided to go inland abit and head straight for the bottom. Here are some of the amazing places we have been so far!

gnomesville

Two hours south of Perth is a quirky and unusual little place called Gnomesville. Situated in the Ferguson Valley is a home of more than 5,000 Gnomes. Legend has it Gnomesville began in the 1990’s after a local placed a garden gnome in the hollow of a tree. Since then it has become a tourist attraction and thousands of gnomes have been placed there by locals and tourists from all over the country. Pathways have been put in place leading you to see the gnomes and it has a great little picnic area for those who want to stop for a bite to eat. The kids loved it here and were very excited to leave behind a Gnome of their own.

greenbushes

Greenbushes is a timber and mining town 250km south of Perth. It’s a quiet little town but has a tantalising history and is well worth a visit. There is a great little free camp called Greenbushes Pool which has a natural waterhole, playground and clean amenities. This little town also holds some family history on Dan’s side so we were very keen to learn about the history of the old Exchange Hotel that his great grandad Harold Brock owned and run in the 1950’s.

walpole

Walpole is located 430km south of Perth and is well known for its stunning beaches, rivers and waterways catering for all types of activities from swimming, surfing and fishing. Walpole’s famous attraction is The Valley of the Giants Tree top walk located 40mins out of town in the Tingle State Forest. The 600m boardwalk takes you 40m high through the breathtaking views of the Tingle

Trees. If walking 40m high in the air is not your cup of tea, the Ancient Empire boardwalk is also located there where you can get up close and personal to the 400 year old giants of the forest. Just 15km out of Walpole is a fantastic beach called Conspicuous Cliffs. There is a walkway that leads you up to the cliff top lookout giving you amazing views of the beach and river flowing into the sea. The lookout is good for spotting whales from July-October.

denmark

Denmark is located 423km south-east of Perth and is one of the most beautiful and popular tourism destinations on the south coast of WA. This coastal town set in tree covered hillsides has a village feel. Denmark is also surrounded by many beautiful beaches such as Green’s Pool and Elephant Cove situated in William Bay National Park. These beaches are outstanding for their natural beauty with white sandy shores, turquoise water and stunning rock transformations that surround the entire bay. The calm and protected waters of Greens Pool

makes it a great place for swimming, snorkelling and paddle boarding. Ocean Beach Caravan park was a great place to set up camp. Only 8kms out of town and a short walk to Ocean Beach and the Wilson Inlet. Large grassed sites, campers kitchen, modern amenities and lots for the kids including a big playground, jumping pillow and peddle car hire.

albany

Albany is located 421km from Perth and is at the southern tip of Australia. It’s well known for its history, rugged coastline and iconic features such as the Gap and the Natural Bridge. These attractions are a must and if you are there between July-October you might be lucky enough to see some whales frolicking out at sea. Albany is also well known for its pristine beaches such as Middleton Beach, Misery Bay, Salmon Holes and Little Beach. Albany just oozes with history dating back to World War I and the National Anzac Centre is the place to find out all about it. Located over looking over the actual harbour over 41,000 men and women departed Australia from for the Great War. Another great attraction in Albany is the Historic Whaling Station that closed down in 1978. It is now a museum and has daily tours through the restored whale processing factory.

Emu Beach Caravan Park was an awesome park to stay at and only 10 mins out of town. Situated right on the beach of Emu Point with large sites, modern amenities, jumping pillow, playground and mini golf.

wave rock

336km east of Perth is one of Australia’s famous icon’s “Wave Rock” Standing 15m high and 110m long, this epic granite rock is shaped like a huge wave. With fun photo opportunities and a walk trail that takes you up to the top – this place is a must. Tressie’s Museum and Caravan Park was a great little spot to camp 21kms west of Wave Rock. The Pioneer Museum tours run twice a day with some amazing antiques on display dating back to the 1800’s.

As we take the road less travelled to the coast, we reminisce on our awesome journey so far and are looking forward to the adventures ahead of us.

If what the weather people tell us is true, we are experiencing some changes in weather patterns Australia wide. While some areas have floods, others may be having fires, some have cyclones and some are just perfect this time of the year. Any plan we ever make is the basis for the changes we will make to it. So if you are currently travelling or planning to travel, please check the weather patterns applicable to the area

in which you are or going to. But remember, changing or adjusting your plans does not mean forgoing the experience or the enjoyment from the experience, it’s just the timing of it all which may allow you to do more, see more and enjoy more, so stress should be kept to the minimum. Equally important is the cover you have for your gear and possessions. Is your policy covering for floods? Is your policy covering for fire?

out & about with Kel

Most travelling families would have, or would know of the kids book called ‘Are we there yet?’. It’s a wonderful story about a family who pack up and travel around Australia for three months.

We are this month celebrating our second year anniversary since packing up our very comfortable lives in Adelaide and joining the growing army of families who are living on the road long term.

I was reading this book recently with my kids (for the 713th time) and I realised that the opportunities they have had in their short lives have been incredible. As we turned through the pages they kept saying, ‘we’ve been there, we’ve been there too. Oh we haven’t been there yet, can we go?’

In December 2015 myself, my husband David, and our girls Avalon and Marla moved into a tiny pop up camper trailer caravan (which looks very similar to the one in the kids book) with the very loose plan to travel around Australia while also working.

Our girls, now aged 5 and 3, have learnt so much that they would never have the opportunity to learn back at home. Their understanding of their environment, and their impact on their environment is well beyond their years. They constantly surprise me with the information that they retain from places, and for us travelling and then staying for several months in one area has given us the chance to really explore regions while we are

working and making connections with people who have become important parts of our lives. In our two years on the road we have had some amazing experiences, met some fabulously eccentric people and have all evolved as a family and individually through the travel. We have also had some down days that living in such a small space can bring but are learning the best ways to positively deal with these and become stronger as a result.

Living in a rolling home is really the best adventure you can have and to share with and see life through the eyes of children can make it so much more exciting. Currently we are working in Kalgoorlie in Western Australia.

We will be sharing some of our experiences here in Liquid, Life & Leisure over the coming months and you can also check out our Instagram @thegudlanges

ve o c n a r u co Revived river boat relaunched for island life. A vintage river boat rescued from the scrap yard and carefully restored is set to sail again as a day tripper to Couran Cove. MV The Entertainer, a 27m wooden cruiser built in 1985, was first launched as a spectator vessel in Fremantle for the 1987 America’s Cup. Since being shipped across the Nullarbor by truck around 1989, it served as a charter and special

events vessel for a number of Gold Coast companies.

she’s a part of Gold Coast history and hopefully always will be.”

Operations manager for Couran Cove Island Resort, Steve Gibbs, said the vessel had been destined for the scrap heap when he spotted it for sale earlier this year.

Couran Cove Island Resort’s CEO, Matt Parsons, said the MV Entertainer would be the flagship of the island’s fleet.

“It had been out of the water for three months and it was touch and go as to whether we would restore it,” he said. “It took seven months of work but it was so worth it. She’s a bloody icon,

“We’re now offering day cruises from Mariner’s Cove, sunset cruises for island guests, and of course it’s on offer for private charters and weddings as well,” he said. Earle Senior has a special connection with the MV Entertainer, having skippered her on and off for the past 28 years. “I love the old boat – she’s a challenge to drive well and I find this absolutely irresistible,” he said. The two-level MV Entertainer can carry up to 200 people and boasts a bar and full catering facilities.

n o s a m t s chri the road For our whole entire lives our family Christmas tradition has been spending it at Nanny and Poppy’s house and swimming in their pool, opening presents and eating WAY TOO MANY lollies and chocolates. It’s always heaps of fun because we get to spend time with our cousins and play. In 2016 we actually spent our very first Christmas away from all of our family. It was just Dad, Mum and us two!

Nanny REALLY wanted us to come back to Brisbane for it, but we were all the way on the OTHER SIDE of Australia. We mean literally, in a place called Geraldton. If you don’t know where Geraldton is, you can almost draw a straight line from Brisbane across to the edge of Western Australia and that’s

where we were!! Mum said it was not easy or cheap to go home, so we stayed on the road.

feed pets and have a shower in a real house!! Mum and Dad promised us that Santa would find us, and he did!!

We did get to spend Christmas with our new friends, The Monaghan’s. We met them in Broome and we love them! Spending it with them made Christmas on the road really exciting.

We were SO excited to wake up on Christmas morning to a sack full of presents, and we then spent the WHOLE DAY with our friends The Monaghan’s at their house sitting house.

Mum and Dad decided to house sit at Christmas, so we ended up with a house in Geraldton, then our friends also found a house nearby to house sit too. What a COINCIDENCE!! The people they were house sitting for actually knew the people that we were house sitting for!!

We both got a Garmin watch, which was awesome, because mum likes us to go running with her and we can now track how far we go, it’s AWESOME!! We also got some friendship beads and we made really good pins with them for our friends.

The house sitting was fun, we got to

We slept over on Christmas night at The Monaghan’s house sitting house which

was so cool. We pretty much played all day long with Ella, Tay and Kobie, while mum and dad talked with Matt and Tegan. We ate SO much food too! On Boxing Day it was EXACTLY our 1 year anniversary of being on the road and Tegan made a really cool pavlova shaped in the shape of Australia. Mum and dad loved it so much, every ate it up really quickly after we took some pictures of it. Celebrating a year on the road with Tegan, Matt, Ella, Tay and Kobie was awesome because they are doing the same thing and we’re all going to be friends forever now. We missed our real family at Christmas, but we think that it’s awesome to spend Christmas travelling, because you get

to see so many other places and make new friends you will now know forever, they are like family too.

ayla

Libby & L

PS. Santa really does find you, so if you are travelling this year you don’t need to worry about that!!
