But one thing has remained constant – the Sawafuji swing motor. Watch this video to see why Engel has been number one in Australia for more than 55 years, and enjoy reminiscing with the photos of Engels through the years!

. . . r o t i d e e h from t Welcome LL&L Legends! Welcome back to those of you that are back on deck at work, without you legends, people like me would not be able to still be away soaking up the sun and kicking back in the comfiest chair (that can be found at any given time), reading a book and sipping on a cold champagne. I make this sound like this a regular occurrence, I assure you it is not. I do though love the tradition of our Christmas break. Packing up the car and camper and hitting the sandy shores of Fraser Island. Our kids, parents, brothers, their wives and families all head over to celebrate the year that was, see the New Year in, partake in some fishing, card and board games, day trips, and anything in between. This definitely is the time that I get to reflect and recharge, it gives me the ability to remind myself of what is important and reset the clock of importance. I am not sure if any of you have the same problem, but the deeper I get into projects and workload, the more

We are social! Follow us today!

hours I work and the more stressed I get the more detached I get from what is actually most important. So I do take time throughout the year to reset and remind. However, this yearly trip with everyone really is the one trip that gets to the core of what I am about, who I am and where I am heading and I am so lucky to know I have this place that absolutely grounds me and even luckier that I have family and friends that love it nearly as much as I do. What is your plan this year? What is that you finally want to cross off the to do list and make happen? Whatever it is you can, you just need to put a plan in place. What trip are you taking this year? We like to plan one big trip into each year, a place that none of us have been, a place that surprises us all and no one has an edge or idea, it is always a blank canvas and we learn and do together. This publication each month is something that for us is so important, it not only allows us to be in touch first hand with service providers to ensure we are always safe on the

road, but it also allows us to see where everyone is and shortlist the places that interest us. Whether your trips are weekends, week long or life long, they are important to take, important to plan and important to make the most of. Be sure to plan well for these and use reputable service providers, we have many across our platforms who support us and we would love you to support them. Check them out through the mag or visit www. lifestyleandleisuresupercentre.com.au for providers near you. I hope you all had a very safe and enjoyable Christmas and holiday season, and here is to a great 2018. Make it count. Living & Loving Life Hayles

a captain's view of the hockey draw for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games

Australia’s men’s hockey team have claimed a perfect five gold medals from five Commonwealth Games appearances, but the competition is getting tougher according to captain Mark Knowles. The official Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) Hockey draw has been announced and is sure to be a thrilling competition with plenty of exciting match-ups. Knowles has been part of Australia’s last three gold medal performances, but has seen firsthand the improvement of hockey nations around the world. “The Commonwealth Games is getting harder and harder to win, England are better, New Zealand and India are much better,” Knowles told GC2018. com. “That is what makes this tournament so much harder than any Games I’ve been going to - and that goes back 12 years!” Australia’s men’s pool will consist of New Zealand, Canada, South Africa and Scotland.

“Our pool is really difficult, we have three big rivals in New Zealand, Canada and South Africa. Those three have all played well in world league tournaments over the last two years,” he said.

four or five games but they haven’t come with all their best players. A lot of them are based in Europe, so I don’t think we can take a lot out of the games we’ve played this year.

“They will be a good challenge for us, they are teams with a lot of aggression physically. They are very fit and strong. Then you add in that European influence with Scotland, they’ll bring a different type of flair.

“Australia v New Zealand in hockey or any sport is very strong.”

“The Commonwealth Games are getting harder every time we play. The standard of hockey through the countries 5-15 in the world have got so much better. So it is making each tournament so much harder to be successful at.”

Australia’s men know they will have a tough task trying to take home a sixthconsecutive gold medal, especially given some of the superstar players they will face in April. Australia will ramp up their preparation for GC2018 with a four test series against one of the world powers of hockey, the Netherlands.

New Zealand looms large in Pool A, with a deep seeded rivalry and plenty of competition between the two countries. While Australia has enjoyed a recent string of wins over the New Zealand outfit, Knowles believes they haven’t played the best Kiwi side yet.

“We are going to come into the Commonwealth Games ready to be very good in front of our home crowd. What we will give is fast, exciting and a physical attacking brand of hockey and that is what people love about our sport.”

“The rivalry with New Zealand is very, very strong. We’ve played them a lot,” Knowles said.

non spill glasses

Silwy Australia is a family owned business based in Sydney, Australia. Owners Tim, and Pete have an eye for stunning products that make life easier, more enjoyable and solve problems so our customers can relax and spend more time enjoying life.

Tim and Pete are avid campers and love a day out on the water with a long history of professional yachting and recreational camping where we love taking the journey as much as time at the destination, and just getting out for a bit of fun. On a recent trip to Germany in search

of the next amazing product we came across the Silwy range and immediately saw it as something that the Australian public need access to. Having cir-cum navigated the globe Tim and Pete have lost track of how many drinks they have spilt and glasses that have been broken due to the movement of the boat. So when they saw Silwy glasses they saw the benefits immediately. THE IDEA IS AS SIMPLE AS IT IS BRILLIANT! Are you sick of broken glass and drink spills? Wish you had a solution to solve your everyday problems? We welcome you to Silwy, the world’s first magnetic

glass. We are an industry leading supplier of the Sundowner Glasses a range of non-breakable poly-carbonate drinking glasses offered Australia wide at equitable prices. When coupled with the Stay-Put coaster, you no longer have to worry about accidentally tipping over your glasses. A magnet in the bottom of the Silwy glass makes it adhere to the adhesive coasters (aka Stay-Put coasters), the Silwy tables or any metallic surface around you. Meaning no more spills and breakages. They say the most simple ideas are the best. This simple idea turned into the silwy-principle. silwy solves the problem of rattling of fallings cups or glasses in an innovative and attractive way.

No one wants spilt drinks and broken glasses now you can relax with a hot or cold drink and know it will be safe and sound where you placed it thanks to the magnet elegantly embedded in the base of the glass.

The birth of the Allegro Breeze in 2011 opened the door for a luxury Class A diesel pusher coach narrow enough for Australian regulations. Powering the Breeze’s energetic ride is an assertive Cummins ISV5.0 V8, the result of a three-year collaboration between Tiffin and Cummins. Designed,

developed, and tested on the Breeze PowerGlide chassis, the ISV5.0 exceeds traditional diesel engines in durability, reliability, and performance. With an all new floor plan launcing early 2018, these coaches are sure to impress! The Allegro Breeze comes in a variety of paint schemes outside opening up to a range of cabinetry and decor options inside. At Tiffin Motorhomes, we build for quality first and foremost, limiting our production to ensure meticulous craftsmanship. It may not be the most business-savvy way to run a company but it is the best way. By investing the

time and effort to do things right, we want you, as a Tiffin owner, to have the utmost confidence in your coach, as well as a peace of mind you won’t find with other manufacturers. You see, not only do we stand proudly behind our product, we stand behind you as well.

new year's resolutioins vs all year goals 2018 is here, and with it comes a myriad of people making New Year’s Resolutions. Making resolutions is great, but for most people, they involve grand notions or major changes with little preparation or sustainable action plans to work towards reaching the end goal. Because of this, New Year’s Resolutions now carry a stigma where the greatest efforts are made in the “New Year” but after a few months things start to taper off and you revert back to old habits.

Work towards your goals all year long by breaking them down into a series of smaller steps, and focusing on subgoals that are measurable and timebased. For example, rather than making a resolution to “lose 12kg in 2018”, break it down to losing 1kg each month, and striving to do so by combining regular exercise with a nutritious diet. Then with the regular exercise sub-goal, it could be as simple as going for a daily walk or jog, or doing exercises in front of the TV at night like crunches, tricep dips, squats or lunges. By introducing simple exercises that fit within your existing routine, you avoid burning yourself out in the first few weeks with intense workouts (which will

only deter you from keeping it up in the longer term). Likewise, healthy eating is not an allor-nothing scenario. Make small and positive decisions on a daily basis to move towards good health, rather than trying an 8-week fad diet and expecting instant results. Rallie McAllister, MD, MPH, looks at health as a continuum – i.e. every choice you make either moves you closer to the ‘good health’ end of the continuum or the ‘poor health’ end. So having a can of soft drink would send you in the wrong direction, while drinking a glass of water would take you in the right direction towards good health.

For a long-term solution to healthy eating in 2018, Gourmet Meals can deliver portion controlled meals straight to your door so you can eat great tasting, nutritionally balanced meals every day without the arduous tasks of shopping, preparing and cleaning up. Our meals have no added preservatives, no artificial flavours and colours, and are 100% gluten free. They are also high in fibre and protein, and reduced in salt and fat – which means you’ll always be moving towards good health when you choose to eat Gourmet Meals. Best of all – ordering healthy meals online will fit within your normal routine, it’s sustainable, and will ensure for greater success all year long.

Find our menu online at www.gourmetmeals.com. au or call 1300 112 112 to ask our friendly staff to send you a menu. Enquire about our introductory offer and let Gourmet Meals help you get your health back on track this 2018. Let your resolution be to have a Happy and Healthy New Year!

Have you though been thorough with this approach and factored in some very key components to this process. 1. IS THE INSURANCE COVER AUSTRALIA WIDE OR ON STATE BASIS? You need to be extra vigilant when you are organising cover to ensure you are being covered to suit your purpose. There are covers that only cover you for the state you take it out in, it is important you raise this question and include Australia wide cover if your travels take you across the borders.

2. WHAT IF YOU GET STUCK WITH MECHANICAL FAILURE? This is something that does happen to you, it is not just stories you read about others. This can, may and possibly will happen if you are spending time on the road travelling. It is important that you have adequate cover and policies in place that you are not left stranded in places waiting weeks for parts and assistance. There are roadside assistances available for your tow vehicle, along with extended warranties that are very suitable to those on the road travelling. 3. HAVE YOU UNDER OR OVER INSURED? This is something that you need to be wary of and speak with experts in this field to ensure you have the right policies and the right value.

If you factor this in and prepare for the unexpected from word go at least if you do end up on the wrong side of what you expected from your holiday, at least you can have confidence you are going to get the help and assistance you need and in a timely manner. Finding the right team to handle your insurance is more important than the time you took finding your pride and joy, the wrong cover you could find yourself back where you started and out of pocket.

The team at Westcorp Capital can truly help you through this what can be an overwhelming process. They take the time to talk you through the above and more to get you on the road and keep you on the road. Welcome the newest Liquid, Life & Leisure feature.... Destination Must See. Each month we will take you on an adventure to a new location and explore just some of what it has to offer. For our first installment let me introduce you to Inskip Point. Inskip Point is located to the north of the Town of Rainbow Beach, South East Qld.

With the well-known Fraser Island, just a short barge ride from Inskip Point, it is fair to say that Inskip is a very popular destination. The Inskip Peninsula Recreation Area was declared in 1996, covering 459ha of the Inskip Peninsula and extends to the low water mark. It contains land which is Reserve and State land tenure, managed by the Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing (NPSR). Although the Inskip Peninsula Recreation Area is only 459ha, its natural values are wide ranging. Its unique aesthetic qualities provide a surf beach to the east, the calm waters of the Great Sandy Strait to the west and largely uninterrupted views to Fraser Island.

With direct beach access for camping it is no wonder why so many people flock here year in year out. With a short 15 minute drive back into town to Rainbow Beach to enjoy the luxuries of a cooked meal, stock up on groceries, enjoy dinner or lunch at the pub it does make the spot very accessible. The road in to the camping grounds is bitumen and there are different style of spots that can cater for large caravans, motorhomes and 2wd vehicles, and then others spots that you would need to 4wd to gain access. Amenities are available at some of the camping spots, a dump point on your way back into Rainbow Beach and a couple of servos in town to top up on fuel and air for your day trips.

The beautiful coastline is surrounded by Beach she-oaks, cypress pine and other coastal trees and shrubs offering great shady spots and the pristine beaches play backdrop to your perfect holiday. Camping permits are required, so be sure to check out the sites and get these prior to your stay. The area is very busy through peak holiday seasons so keep this in mind, however if you wish to travel outside these times you will be sure to land yourself a very impressive spot. While in the region you have the chance to tick off the bucket list with horseriding on the beach, helicopter joy flights and a Fraser Island day trip and much more.

Rainbow Beach Helicopters is a small family business run by pilot Glen and wife Diana since late 2016. Glen and Diana are passionate about the area having spent a lot of time here as children with our parents and then with our own children camping and fishing at Double Island, Inskip Point and Fraser Island. They have also spent many years travelling throughout Australia and Glen spent most of his flying career in the Kimberley’s flying over amazing places such as the Bungle Bungles and El Questro Station. However, it was always their dream to come back and share the unique beauty this place has to offer with anyone who

appreciates the thrill and exhilaration a helicopter flight provides. The team at Rainbow Beach Helicopters are dedicated and very passionate about bringing a unique and personalised experience to all their customers that want to share their ultimate adventure with us. Rainbow Beach and Double Island Point have always been the best kept secret in South East Queensland and are truly world class destinations. Rainbow Beach Helicopters are currently flying a Robin son R44 Raven 2. This luxurious 4 seater helicopter has premium leather seats and air conditioning. It has high end bose A20 noise cancelling headsets for your comfort. They

encourage a “doors off” experience for our short scenic flights. This allows for unobstructed views whilst experiencing the exhilarating feeling of the open space between you and the natural beauty below. Our doors are fitted with special extended or bubble windows allowing for a little extra room inside if you’d prefer the doors on. Our helicopter is kept in an immaculate standard, it is strictly maintained, cleaned and lovingly cherished by Glen on a daily basis. Rainbow Beach is a 3 hour drive North from Brisbane to Gympie. As you enter Gympie, take the Tin Can Bay, Rainbow Beach exit on the right and follow the signs.

You will be in awe of the spectacular views of the Rainbow Beach coastline including Carlo Sand Blow, the famous Coloured Sands and Double Island Point. This is the Great Sandy Straits which have more marine life than the Great Barrier Reef and over 140 species of birds.

Carah Classic . $99 pp . Flight Duration 10min Experience the spectacular views of Fraser Island and Inskip Peninsula. From above you will be amazed at the different sea scapes on each side of Inskip Point. On the north side of Inskip you will see the fast flowing channel between the two land masses, plus the turbulent water where the channel meets the ocean, locals call this the washing machine! To the south you will see calm, tidal, still water in the Tin Can Bay Inlet, which is a popular sailing destination. Only by air can you appreciate the natural beachside bushland of Inskip Peninsula and its proximity to Fraser Island.

Carlow Crush . $149 pp . Flight Duration 15min Fly over one of Australia’s best beaches while viewing the spectacular coastal cliff formation to Double Island Point. Carlo Sand Blow was formed over 50 000 years ago when a lightning strike caused a fire that cleared the vegetation. The sand is blown by winds up the east coast of Australia from as far away as the Blue Mountains behind Sydney. The flight will then turn west towards Tin Can Bay and fly over the pristine waterways of the Great Sandy Straits.

Mudcrab Madness . $199 pp . Flight Duration 20min View the magnificent Rainbow Beach from an eagle’s perspective while taking in the breathtaking coastline and South Pacific Ocean. Whether you are visiting for the first time or holiday here frequently, you will appreciate the natural beauty this coastline has to offer even more after this experience.

family gap year reflction As we look back on our Family Gap Year, we laugh, smile and even cringe at the adventures we had. Life will truly never be the same, not for us, not for our children. We left without too much thought, deciding to pack up and go in about 8 weeks. No preparation, no planning, no time to procrastinate on the idea!! Looking back now, we wouldn’t have it any other way. What we do know, after almost 600 days and 10,000+ photos, is smile at the memories and experiences we created in our lives individually, and the lives as our family as a connected team. This trip changed us all in SO many ways. Join us as we reflect on our journey!

Self Confidence, one of our girls is quiet, shy and reserved. She doesn’t like to order her own food, stand out in a crowd or be the life of the party. She prefers to talk her sister into ordering her meals, doing her deeds and basically being her ‘voice’ a lot of the time. Well everything changed over the 18 months of travel, when our less reserved daughter started to step out of her comfort zone and step up in areas she otherwise would avoid. We still remember distinctively the day

she ordered herself a sandwich, it was amazing, and it all grew from there. She’s still not overtly outgoing, but she definitely takes more risk than she’s ever done. If for this one thing alone, our trip was worth it. Consumerism, oh boy has travelling impacted our footprint on the environment!! We consume less, we question purchases, we don’t buy ‘stuff’ without more thought and we generally look to alternative ways to consume.

This year for Christmas, we have shopped a lot on Gumtree, preferring to purchase second hand goods, as opposed to brand new items. We want to be involved and be leaders in the circular economy, driven both from our trip away and our project of the World’s Biggest Garage Sale (Google it). We purchased our clothes from op shops all around the country, predominantly because we knew we were going to trash them travelling, and secondly to support the small communities we visited.

Environmental Impact, we waste less, recycle more and use less resources, especially water. Showering while travelling didn’t happen as often as it did at home, and when we did shower, we timed them and were conscious of water wastage. We also used less squares of toilet paper, because filling up the loo in the caravan wasn’t fun when it happened quickly. We created a little competition of who could use the least amount of squares - it sounds crazy, but trust us, it’s normal when you live a life on the road. We talk more about the impact waste has on the community and the environment and the girls are SUPER conscious of plastic, especially for

the ocean animals. They would pick up random little whenever they saw it and are super passionate about the environment after spending so much time in the outdoors. Housing, returning from 18 months on the road living in a caravan that’s 21 foot long definitely makes you rethink your needs. We went from a 4 bedroom, study, pool and McMansion style house, to renting a 2 bedroom unit nearby the school. We haven’t yet decided exactly what feels right with our housing needs, but we know it’s not a McMansion anymore. We want less things, we don’t need as much space and we feel like it’s important to not lose sight of this lesson. We have a dream to own a tiny home, which feels so much more like us. The trip changed us like we never could have imagined. What’s next for us now that we’re back in ‘society’?

Well, we’ve taken the plunge into dedicating our lives to the circular economy by spending our time on the World’s Biggest Garage Sale, raising money for charity, all while reducing landfill and the impact it has on the economy and the environment. We are living small, spending less on things, more on experiences and valuing time as the true currency of life. Would we change anything? Absolutely not…..we only hope to inspire other families to step out of their comfort zone to discover their own version of ‘life’ after such a profound journey around our beautiful country.

Festival - November

l a v i t s e f r e d i c d n a r e rc aft be What better way is there to spend your weekend than on the beautiful Sunshine Coast, soaking up the sun, hanging with your mates while trying all the varieties on offer of Craft Beer at the 2017 Sunshine Coast Craft Beer Festival? In a true celebration of craft beer and cider’s creativity and diversity, the Sunshine Coast Craft Beer & Cider Festival brought patrons over 160 brews from across Australia and New Zealand. This inaugural festival will put independent producers on a platform not only for local people, but visitors from around Australia and New Zealand, to engage and interact with some of the industries larger than life characters. With the Inaugural event being a sell out and organiser Tanya Taber being very happy with the outcome with her vision of hoping to get 3000

at the event, and finding themselves having to cap entries at 5000 as they did not have more wristbands. As an event organiser I am sure that is a great problem to have. The heavens opened up at around 11am, while exhibitors and volunteers where busily getting their stands set up, giving the stadium a fair soaking, it wasn’t going to dampen the spirits of all the staff, volunteers, organisers and exhibitors involved. There was only one vision for this event and it was to be one of the best events that the Sunshine Coast has seen and that it was. With the cricket being played on a big screen, a kids’ corner, great food options and the great selection of Craft Beer, Ciders and Wine, live

music this event really did have it all and was a huge success. By the time the gates opened the clouds and rain had disappeared and the sun was shining and you could feel the excitement in the air. The VIP area had some fantastic car and wheel displays with the Race Wheels Australia Method Race Wheels Ford Ranger getting a lot of interest throughout the entire duration of the event. The Cut Price Solar Kombi and the Manx beach buggy on display also getting a lot of attention that many would stop to get their photo. An event not to be missed for anyone who appreciates good company, excellent beer and a long tale or two. For anyone locking in their 2018 travel calendar, this is an event to put on the radar and visit the Sunshine Coast during this time. maxtrax take the easy way out

WHERE DID MAXTRAX COME FROM? Brad McCarthy, author of Dirty Weekends “The Essential 4WD Guides”, devised the idea for MAXTRAX in 2001 after a particularly stressful incident on a remote north Queensland beach where he almost lost his bogged vehicle to the incoming tide, despite being equipped with all of the traditional recovery equipment. Brad’s passion for the Australian bush, exploration and adventure sent him out, often solo throughout Queensland, to research bush tracks and locations to feature in his guide books.

NO ASSISTANCE NEEDED From his experiences, Brad recognized the need for a system that makes vehicle recovery and extraction a safe, simple, one-person task and eliminates the need for any outside assistance such as towing, snatching, or winching.

LIGHTWEIGHT & DURABLE We tested several types and grades of super tough nylons to create a lightweight, yet durable product that provides superior performance with our focus on the key issues of strength, effectiveness, usability and aesthetics.

MAXTRAX came from Brad’s idea to develop a foolproof and fail-safe quality Australian made product to make extracting or recovering a stranded or bogged vehicle a safe, simple, quick and easy procedure.

MAXTRAX was trialled countless times using typical bogging scenarios and after many late nights and product refinements, MAXTRAX was ready to launch onto the Australian 4WD accessories market in late 2005. Not long after, MAXTRAX won Australian 4WD Monthly Magazine’s award for Best New Product under $500.

Due to Brad’s experience, ingenuity and “hands-on” research, the idea of an alternative and innovative vehicle recovery device that was safe, simple, quick and easy to use eventually came to fruition in the form of MAXTRAX.

NOW WIDELY AVAILABLE Since then MAXTRAX have been discovered by 4WD adventurers around

the world as the safe, simple, quick and easy method of vehicle recovery. MAXTRAX are now widely available around Australia at most ARB, TJM, Opposite Lock, BCF, and Supercheap Auto stores as well as a number of independent retailers, and from stockists in thirty countries. Our customers now include mining, energy and exploration companies, government agencies, 4WD trainers and tour operators, lifeguard services, rural fire services, State Emergency Service branches, off road rally drivers, the Australian Army, US Defense Force and the United Nations. MAXTRAX is now an I4WDTA (International 4WD Trainers Association) Recommended Product.

There wouldn’t be many that could say travelling and seeing Australia is not something on their bucket list... The gorgeous Esperance in Western Australia, what about the Great Barrier Reef in Qld or that stunning drive along the Great Ocean Road, or the challenge and experience of the Simpson desert! The list of amazing, goes on and on when we are talking about our great country. And on this note how many continue to tell themselves one day, one day we will do it! Kids, grandkids, jobs - the list of why we are not is endless! Caravan, boat and camper trailer ownership is achievable, and you don’t need to keep putting it off. It doesn’t take retirement, or a drastic lifestyle change to make it happen, all it takes is the right guidance, a big enough want and you’re away. The experiences await you and the benefits are so rewarding. In a day and age that we live in today full of technology this lifestyle of experience and the outdoors has to be even more important than ever before. are you towing safely?

brought to you by Everything Caravan & Camping

Why have towing mirrors? When towing a caravan/camper trailer the rear vision mirror is of little use as the view is obstructed. And depending on how big your caravan/camper is your side mirrors may not give you a clear view of any vehicles alongside or behind you. Towing mirrors give you the best chance of being able to see what’s around you and know what’s there and know you are doing the best you can to keep your family and other road users safe. Rules and Regulations The driver must have an unrestricted vision down either side to the rear of the caravan or camper trailer and a clear view to see any overtaking or following vehicles. Check relevant laws for your state or territory What are the best types? There are various types available bonnet, guard, door, clip on and full replacement mirrors available. They can range anywhere from $20 up to $800 for a set and as the saying goes ‘You get what you pay for’. They should be stable and as Sturdy as possible as any bouncing or vibrating can make it difficult for clear vision. Suction cup or Strap on mirrors, these are more user-friendly as you

can adjust from inside your vehicle. Suction cup ones didn’t take long to come off and way too much vibration, could barely see anything out of them. While the strap on ones stayed on they still had vibration through them and wasn’t the clearest. Basically they made me legal but both were not effective.

install with no vibration at all. Very good value for money.

Bonnet Towing Mirrors, a metal cross-bar that extends from one side of bonnet to the other. Usually held on by clips inserted on each side of the bonnet near the wheel arch. A mirror is attached to each end on either side. Not user-friendly as you can’t reach to adjust from inside your vehicle.

Clearview mirrors, are a full replacement of you existing mirrors, very user-friendly simply pull them out and extend them when required and push back in when not using them only down side in my opinion is they are quite big and look big in proportion to your vehicle .

Clip on mirrors, there are many versions of the clip on mirrors and in my opinion these are the best Milencos and is currently what we are using. User friendly and very easy to

Ratchet strap/Braced style mirror, another very good mirror, little bit of setting up to get them on but once on they are also very good. Easy to adjust, no vibrations with a good clear view of what’s behind you.

There are a huge number of epic and iconic road trips in Australia. One of the most iconic has to be crossing the Nullarbor Plains. The Nullarbor is the stuff of legends...the greatest of all is the Nullarbor Nymph. She was first spotted in 1971 in Eucla, just over the Western Australian border. The legend was that a half naked white woman, just wearing a kangaroo skin, was spotted in the bush with the kangaroos.

T a in y r a

K a B P

The world’s media descended on Eucla in search of the mysterious woman. Eventually it was revealed that the Nullarbor Nymph was invented by some blokes having a beer at Eucla Hotel. I've heard a couple of different stories as to who the nymph was. One story was she was a backpacker working in the hotel, but I think she was really the wife of a local kangaroo shooter who was in on the hoax from the beginning. Our adventure across the Nullarbor was nowhere near as legendary, but we did see some incredible sights. The Nullarbor Plains, or Desert, is the area from Ceduna in South Australia through to Norseman in Western Australia. It is the world’s largest piece of limestone at 200,000 km square! The Nullarbor holds the record for the longest straight section of railway line at 478km and the longest straight length of road at 146.6km. Our trip across the Nullarbor started from the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia and through to Port Augusta where we visited family and friends on our way back out of South Australia, bound for the wild west of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. There are some great little towns to stop along the way on this route, which also include some great Aussie ‘big things’, if you are like me and get excited by these random structures that are scattered across our country. Kimba, which is the halfway point across Australia, is also home to the Big Galah, and just down the road at Poochera, you’ll find the Big Dinosaur

Ant! This is also the point where the Eyre Peninsula really starts, which, I highly recommend spending as much time as you can exploring around here. South Australian beaches are beautiful. Touring along the Eyre Peninsula coast, you’ll find countless Jettys, amazing seafood and every aquatic activity you can possibly want to do, including swimming with the sharks! We started our Great Australian Bight experience with an overnight at Fowlers Bay, which is a cute little town surrounded by sand dunes. An early morning walk along the beach was rewarded with watching about 10 whales frolicking off the shore. Whale watching season along this coastline is from May to October. The Whale Centre at the Head of the Bight is the best viewing platform and the day that we visited I believe there were around 100 whales in the sea right below us, including a baby white whale! The landscape along the Nullarbor is incredible, it is arid and sparse but hosts some of the most incredible coast in the country. There are roadhouses around every 200km on the road, many of them doubling as a hole on the Nullarbor Links Golf Course, which is an 18 hole par 73 course, and is by all accounts the ‘World’s Longest Golf Course’. Call in to any of the roadhouses for information on how to play a few holes. Over the South Australian / West Australian border, just east of Norseman, which is at the end of the Nullarbor, is a tiny town called Balladonia. Balladonia, is the site

where the NASA space station Sky Lab crashed to earth in 1979. There is so much to see along the Nullarbor. We only scratched the surface and can’t wait to do this trip again to explore some more of this incredible part of the country.

a little piece of paradise Esperance is a town approximately 720km east-southeast of Perth. This breathtaking place hosts the abundance of beauty and is known for having some of the world’s best beaches and pristine coastline. We spent two weeks exploring the rugged coastline and dreamy beaches off Esperance and we must say, with its relaxed beach lifestyle – it’s definitely somewhere we can see ourselves settling down.

For its population of almost 15,000, this quiet isolated town is tucked in among so many natural wonders. Take a drive along Great Ocean Drive and enjoy the scenic tour of the local beaches. First stop is West Beach, known as a very popular surf spot. The reef forms crystal clear lagoons, making protected areas perfect for swimming. At the next stop a winding staircase takes you down to the tranquil turquoise waters of Blue Haven, featuring a calm and protected beach making it ideal for swimming, surfing and fishing. The beach that stood out to us the most was Twilight Beach; featuring stunning crystal clear waters, snow white sand and the iconic rock formation just offshore. Twilight Beach has been named “Most Popular Beach in WA” and is one of the town’s most loved beaches. Back in town, there is such a laid back feel. The foreshore is full of history and

icons such as the Whale’s tale, Wind turbine and the old Tanker Jetty. Why not grab a coffee or bite to eat at 1 of 5 foodie vans set up on the foreshore. For the kids there is 2 great parks situated on the Esplanade foreshore including a skate park that our kids spent a lot of time at. Esperance has a strong Arts Culture with many art galleries and exhibitions to admire or check out the Museum Village Markets held fortnightly where you can immerse yourself amongst an array of local artisans and craft persons, as well as sampling local produce, food, and coffee.

Cape Le Grand 56km east of Esperance is Cape Le Grand National Park – world famous for its stunning scenery, idyllic beaches and sand that squeaks between your toes. Cape Le Grand Beach offers a great campsite and picnic area with

beachside views and stunning sunsets. Hike up to Frenchman’s Peak, or take the coastal walk trail up to Rossiter Bay, Thistle Cove or Hellfire Bay. All with white beaches, aqua waters and amazing views. Voted one of the best beaches in Australia – Lucky Bay is south west’s little piece of paradise. 4.9km long of squeaky sand and turquoise waters. It’s so beautiful that even the kangaroos laze on the beach! Its sheltered bay is ideal for fishing, swimming, snorkelling and paddle boarding. As we watch our last sunset in the west before we head off for the boarder in search of our next adventure- till next time stay tuned.

our five favourite things We got back from travelling for almost 600 days around Australia and begged mummy and daddy to let us go back to real school. Home School with Dad was fun, because we didn’t have to be in the classroom all day and we were allowed to learn a lot of things outdoors about Australia and the history of our country. Mummy always says that we have learnt life skills and not just normal school stuff. We loved going back to school and our friends have been asking lots of questions about our trip. We always get asked about our favourite place or things, so we decided to share some. Meeting new friends! This was the BEST bit, because we were able to play with other kids who were either travelling themselves, or living in the communities and towns we visited. We were SO lucky to meet another family who are now our new best friends, and we are planning lots of visits and travelling together in the future. Climbing mountains! Mummy loves to run and we always get asked to join her, but usually say no because it’s WAY too early in the morning, but we do love climbing mountains. Mum tries to trick us into jogging the walking tracks with her to get a run in, but we know her tricks. t’s funny though, because we really do love doing the mountain climbing and it was definitely one of our most favourite things to do. Flexibility! We love that daddy stopped making us use an alarm clock to time

our home school days. When we started on the road, daddy would set the alarm for school to start, but we never made it on time and we usually had a fight about being behind all the time. Mummy talked dad into stopping the alarms and just letting it be more flexible. We were really happy with that, and it helped us learn more. We especially loved that we could do things outdoors and explore places, instead of just sitting and learning the same thing over and over again. Together time! It was so AWESOME to spend all of our time together as a family. Mum says that we learn more about ‘real life’ when we spend so much time together this close, and we agree. Even though there were some days where we had fights, we still would have had these fights at home with each other, but we never would have been able to spend every single day together as a family. We especially love playing board games, going to the beach, exploring new towns and just hanging out, which we did a LOT!! It was so much fun being that close with each other, we miss it sometimes but know that it was very special.

with libby and layla

Movie Nights! We have a family tradition to spend Friday night watching a movie together as a family. We had a TV in our caravan and daddy and mummy made sure that this family tradition didn’t stop when we travelled. It’s something special and we all usually slept in the same bed after movie night too. Even though it’s only a queen size bed, we aren’t very big and we liked being close to each other. Movie nights are really special and we are so happy that even though we travelled around Australia and got to see places other people might not ever be able to visit, it was more special to be able to still have our family tradition come with us. Now that we’ve been back at school for a whole term, we think about our Family Gap Year and how it has changed us. We feel more experienced in travel and some other things that mum calls ‘life skills’ and we are in the habit of being back at real school. Playing with our friends has been awesome and we will always remember our trip for the rest of our lives. We always talk about it and laugh at all the fun stuff we were able to do. It changed us a lot.
