Welcome & Happy Easter LL&L Legends!

Well Christmas is well and truly gone, Easter is now upon us. There is so much going on here on the Gold Coast where our Head Office is, with Commonwealth Games preparations in full swing and by the time this goes live we will well and truly have many guests visiting. With the games being held for the first time in a regional centre, there is no doubt an event of this size will impact the Gold Coast in many ways. Public Transport, roads, accommodation, venues, and other infrastructure will be put to the test. There has been one million tickets, which equates to this in visitors / spectators, 6600 athletes, 3500 media, and 50,000 games volunteers and workers, wow what a line up and opportunity not only for the Gold Coast and Queensland but Australia in general. I for one am very excited to watch how the city will come alive. We will be attending the netball and the beach volleyball.

We feel it so important to our family and our kids to be involved, however we will be escaping in the caravan for the majority of this time as it is Easter and school holidays and well – that’s just what we do. There is also so many exciting events happening. One of those events is the Kookaburra Homes Floatfest 2018, being held in South Australia, check out the feature article page 14 and if you can’t attend this year be sure to get it in the diary for next year. Own a boat? Thinking of buying a boat? We have a very informative article in this edition on the benefits of Dry Stack Storage for your boat and it is really worth the read. Dry stacking has many benefits and whether you are already a boat owner or looking to become one this style of storage is the answer. It is such a busy world we live in, this puts the fun even more back into boating.

As usual, we have had such a great response of contributors and clients to help bring this month’s edition to fruition and I could not be more grateful. To be able to do what I love day in day out, it is only because of these guys that it is possible, and of course all of our legend readers so thankful to you guys for checking it out every month

Until next edition - stay safe, travel lots, be kind and live life.

THE JUNGLE COLLECTIVE The Jungle Collective is the brainchild of Linda Vydra and myself, Josh O’Meara. It came from the culmination of two of our loves, plants and parties but was thrust into existence due to a small stroke of misfortune. Following about my 12th concussion (mostly from football) I didn’t bounce back as I had previously and struggled particularly to look at screens, which was the backbone of my design business, Beetle Creative. After 3 or 4 months it was clear I needed a new direction and gardening was one of the great outlets. At the time there was a rapidly growing enthusiasm for plants in Melbourne, so we turned our lemons into lemonade, launched the Jungle Collective and haven’t looked back since.

For those unacquainted with The Jungle Collective, we throw massive pop-up indoor plant sales, which we currently run in Melbourne and Sydney. We have all of your indoor favourites but we’re always looking to push the boundaries too, seeking out rare and unusual plants that are hard to find anywhere else. Our events have numerous horticulturalists roaming around to answer any of your questions, helping you choose the right plant and giving great advice for it to flourish.

MASSIVE POP-UP PLANT

INDOOR SALES!

Being pop-up, our sales have the advantage of a huge range, large quantities and all of our plants come fresh from the grower to you, meaning it’s all in tip top condition. Our sales are all about having fun and each week we throw in a novel idea for discounts, to keep things interesting. Last week in Sydney it was $5 off if you wear a onesie, in Melbourne it was $5 off if you bring a sausage dog (we want to get one but are currently semi-nomadic!). Our events have the trademark Jungle Bangers booming from the speakers to really set the tone and get our guests deep inside the Jungle. We have a designer inspo focus, with plenty of designer pots and tips for incorporating your new discoveries so apart from purifying your air, soothing your space and being great for mental health, they’ll also look their smoking best.

WE’RE CURRENTLY CONSIDERING EXPANDING INTO OTHER CITIES AROUND AUSTRALIA SO IF YOU WANT US TO VISIT FOLLOW THE JUNGLE COLLECTIVE ON FACEBOOK AND INVITE US TO COME!

THE days are getting shorter, nights getting longer and temperatures around the country are getting decidedly cooler. Summer is officially over and cold weather is creeping in, but that is no reason to stop embracing the caravanning and camping lifestyle. You can still enjoy warm weather and sunny days; it’s all about knowing where to go. Those southern states might be getting chilly, but if you venture further north there are plenty of options right at your fingertips just waiting to be explored. In tropical North Queensland- the aptly named ‘Sunshine State’- picturesque beaches, clear blue water, and native wildlife are right at your fingertips. Cairns Coconut Holiday Resort is a perfect oasis and offers easy access to both the Great Barrier Reef and the city. You can also make the most of activities in and around the resort including the SPLASH Water Park, tennis courts, snorkeling lessons and more. Alternatively, Island Gateway Holiday Park is just minutes away from the scenic Airlie Beach and offers an array of accommodation options ranging from affordable camping sites to Tropical Villas, for those wanting to spoil themselves and get outside the elements. The park offers accessibility to the Whitsunday, Hamilton, Daydream and Hayman Islands in addition to the Great Barrier Reef and all it encompasses. If you’re up for a trip to the warm Northern Territory, Hidden Valley Tourist Park is located just off the highway and offers giant shady trees and tropical gardens. The park also offers a range of accommodation including caravan and camping sites, villas, and cabins for those wanting to avoid the elements. It’s the ideal destination to make the most of all the Northern Territory has to offer: see the crocodiles, take a cruise to Darwin’s Harbour, or visit Kakadu National Park. If the latter particularly interests you, the Aurora Kakadu Lodge and Caravan Park is worth considering Located just outside of the Jabiru Township, the park is the perfect place to stay for exploring the National Park. In your downtime, you can relax in the landscaped gardens, enjoy a meal at the poolside bistro or have a swim in the ‘lagoon style’ pool. In the town of Jabiru you can take a stroll down to Lake Jabiru Park, utilize the other bushwalking trails and explore the woodlands and wetlands. Roadschooling

Roadschooling or homeschooling on the road/while travelling, is becoming more

and more popular as families of all types exchange their normal lives for a life

of adventure on an extended road trip. Some go for a few months, others for

a few years, however regardless of the OHQJWK RI \RXU URDG WULS \RX¡OO QHHG to consider the education needs of your children.

To help with this, we’ve listed a few of the options available to travelling families along with the basics involved with each. Additionally we’ve also provided a detailed summary of what we did with our children, Layla (9) and Libby (8), on our 18 month long “big lap around the great country of Australia. The options available to travelling families are as follows:

DISTANCE EDUCATION - CLASSES This option is perhaps the easiest to facilitate from a parent’s perspective, although it’s also the most impacting on your time. In simple terms, it’s much like normal school, in that your children has a teacher, attends classes, has work set and needs to adhere to work completion requirements, however you can effectively do it f rom anywhere 5IF nFYJCJMJUZ XJUI UIJT PQUJPO that is attending classes, is the lowest of the options presented as your child will need to be available from 9 - 3 to attend classes, albeit on a computer using an internet connection. Also the internet requirement can be challenging to accommodate if your desire is to travel through more remote areas where good internet connectivity NBZ CF MFTT BWBJMBCMF PS OPOFYJTUFOU

DISTANCE EDUCATION

SELF PACED

This option is also one of the easiest to facilitate, as like standard Distance Education, your child’s teacher sets the curriculum, sets work, does all marking and ensures your child completes all assessment tasks, however the work is either downloaded or received via mail and is completed in your own time. It’s worth noting you’ll almost certainly be required to help your kids achieve work deadlines, and parents I’ve met who have taken up

There is as much work as there would be in the class led version of distance education, however it does free you up to do the work when it suits and that is a major plus for travellers. We proceeded with an application to enrol the girls and that was accepted in May 2016, quite a few months after leaving on our journey. It’s worth noting that the application process in QLD was comprehensive to say the least. You have to prove you’ve got what it takes to educate your child to the required standard, which if you aren’t a teacher, can be challenging. WHAT FORMAL EDUCATION WAS PROVIDED?

We took a fairly simple approach to homeschooling by getting our kid’s book list from their previous school. The books covered the basics, reading

» If you are only camping for a few days or you have access to ice, a good quality esky is a great option. » Freeze a meal before you go as it can work as a freezer brick and all you have to do is reheat it for dinner. » Use drinking water and freeze it in plastic bottles as it is great for keeping food cold and you can drink the water once it has defrosted. » Keep your esky in a cool area and ensure your food is secure from animals such as birds and marsupials. » If you are camping for extended periods of time or camping regularly, think about investing in an Engel. » Engels can be used as a fridge or a freezer, keeping your food at a stable temperature. If I am camping for long periods, I often use my Engel as a freezer and I take an esky as well. I freeze my meat and defrost it in the esky and I also freeze ice bricks for use in the esky. » A fridge is a great investment as it means you can camp for extended periods and know your food will be cold. You don’t need to worry about being near a shop and it means you can visit remote camp sites, eat as well and your food will remain cold.

If you haven’t camped before then maybe try a caravan park or a campsite with facilities and once you get your confidence, branch out to national parks or perhaps try bush camping. This guide lists some of the local caravan parks and national park camping areas which are easily accessible for the weekend. Whether it be on the beach in the bush or alongside a river, there are plenty of camping options available and many of these you can book in advance.
