market and since then, has been supplied from our dealership on the Gold Coast.

The birth of the Allegro Breeze in 2011 opened the door for a luxury Class A diesel pusher coach narrow enough for Australian regulations. Sure, Tiffin had been producing beautiful, bigger coaches for several decades at this stage but the narrow size of the Breeze made it a perfect candidate for the Australian

Powering the Breeze is an assertive Cummins ISV5.0 V8, the result of a three-year collaboration between Tiffin and Cummins. Designed, developed, and tested on the Breeze PowerGlide chassis, the ISV5.0 exceeds traditional diesel engines in durability, reliability, and performance. With an all new floor plan featuring 3 slide outs, these coaches are sure to impress! The Allegro Breeze comes in a variety of paint schemes outside opening up to a range

of cabinetry and decor options inside. At Tiffin Motorhomes, we build for quality first and foremost, limiting our production to ensure meticulous craftsmanship. It may not be the most business-savvy way to run a company but it is the best way. By investing the time and effort to do things right, we want you, as a Tiffin owner, to have the utmost confidence in your coach, as well as a peace of mind you won’t find with other manufacturers. You see, not only do we stand proudly behind our product, we stand behind you as well.

Are you an adventurer with an appreciation for the beauty of Australia? The Follow the Sun Relay just might be the perfect journey for you. We are looking for travellers to take on a unique journey and share their stories with us! This opportunity continues the very successful Dometic Follow the Sun. “We are really excited to be partnering with Caravan Industry Association of Australia for the Follow the Sun Relay,” said Justine Schuller, Head of Marketing Dometic. “Our mission is to make Mobile Living Easy and the Follow the Sun Relay will allow more people to do exactly that. We look forward to meeting the explorers and sharing their journeys over the coming year.” Vehicle sponsor Winnebago Australia are also onboard and have supplied a fantastic motorhome to help participants make the most of the experience! “Winnebago Australia are excited to be the promotional travel partner, taking people around our great country in style,” said Luke Trouchet, CEO Winnebago Australia. “Our Byron motorhome can drive and sleep up to 6 people, so a wide range of travelers are encouraged to apply to experience the luxury and comfort of motorhoming.” “Whether it’s a trip from Darwin to Alice with your mates, or a family excursion up the East Coast, this partnership will allow us to show Aussies’ unforgettable roadtrip experiences.” The relay began on Saturday, June 9 at the Queensland Caravan Camping and Touring Supershow in Brisbane, and will return to the same venue one year later. Cookbook author and motivational speaker Annette Sym has already undertaken the first leg of the relay travelling from Brisbane to Toowoomba and the Sunshine Coast, demonstrating ideas for eating healthy on the road. “The recipes I have are quick and easy- I think they’re probably quicker than going out to the local takeaway!” she said. “My husband Bill and I have been married for 45 years and early in our marriage we actually had a VW Campervan and travelled Europe for three years, so this is a bit like going back to the good old days but doing it in a bit more in style!”

The Alpana Story 1878 – 2018 (140 years)

Alpana Station is an historic merino wool producing property situated in the heart of the Flinders Ranges of South Australia. The Henery family have owned and managed Alpana for six generations since 1878. We acknowledge the original custodians of this land, the Adnyamathanha (pron. Ud-nyu-mut-nu) people. We believe the name ‘Alpana’ is from an Adnyamathanha word meaning foliage and many of our paddock and spring names are from their languages. The original Henery here, Paddy (Gen 1), was born in County Clare, Ireland, in 1834. He came from Ireland to Australia at the age of 12 in 1846 and over many years worked on and managed Bungaree, Anama, Carriewerloo and Oraparinna Stations. The unusual spelling of Henery seems to have begun in 1863 where prior to that it was spelled Henry in the family bible. Paddy married Ann Downer at Clare in 1854. Ann had come out to Australia from Surrey, England, in 1853 aged 25. Paddy and Ann had ten children, eight girls and two boys. Two of the girls died very young and are buried at the Bungaree Station chapel. The two sons, John and William, were born in 1860 and 1869 respectively. Paddy purchased Block 69, 133 acres of land, in 1878 near Blinman town on the newly surveyed Hundred of Carr. From the 1850s until the survey in 1878 Alpana Ann Henery nee Downer Patrick (Paddy) Henery Farm’s land was part of Angorichina Station. Paddy was the pioneer farmer of the district and was renowned for his extensive knowledge of sheep and wool. His dream was to grow fodder crops to feed the bullock teams hauling copper ore to Port Augusta from the Blinman Mine. It took Paddy 21 years to freehold the block at a total cost of £133.

In 1879 at age 19 Paddy’s son John (Gen 2) left home to work on stations and go droving in the far north of the state. Between 1875 and 1894 Paddy and Ann’s six daughters all married. In 1882 Paddy purchased the lease of more land and returned to sheep management. Paddy’s son William went to the Boer war and never returned. His death is estimated to be between 1899 and 1901. Paddy and Ann (Gen 1) celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1904 at Alpana. John (G2) was married in 1906 at age 46 to Nellie Lamb Conway of Port Augusta and they lived in Blinman. John and Nellie’s first son, John Patrick St Barbe Henery (Pat) (G3) was born in 1907, their second son Norman Downer Henery was born in 1909 and their only daughter Beatrice Ann was born much later in 1920. Unfortunately Beatrice died suddenly in 1921 aged only one year, ten months. Paddy (G1) died at Alpana in 1918 aged 84 years leaving one son, five daughters, 30 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. After Paddy’s death John (G2) took over the running of Alpana.

John & Nellie Lamb (nee Conway) Henery 1929

The Alpana Story continued... In 1941 John’s (G2) son Pat, (G3) aged 34, married Mona Jean Kipling, aged 37, from South Blinman. They had just one child, a son, John Kipling Henery, born 1942 (G4). Pat’s (G3) father John (G2) died at Alpana in 1945 aged 84 years. John’s (G2) wife Nellie died in 1962 aged 84 years. John Kipling Henery (G4) married Wendy Torr from Adelaide in 1964 and had a son, John David, (known as David) (G5) in 1966 and a daughter, Amanda Mary Louise, in 1969. Wendy died in 1993 aged 52. John (G4) married Jan Forrest from Adelaide in 1998. Pat & Mona (nee Kipling) Henery 1941 John K, David, Sally (nee Hall), Wendy (nee Torr) Henery 1989 David (G5) married Sally May Hall from Loxton and Adelaide in 1989 and they had a son, John Warwick, (G6) in 1991 and a daughter, Michelle Ann, in 1994. Pat (G3) died in 2001 aged 93 years. His wife Mona died in 2004 aged 98. Their son John Kipling (G4) passed away in 2010 aged 67. Alpana has operated as a wool producing property since 1882. Each generation expanded the land holding as bordering land became available, as follows: Woolshed Paddock purchased 1899; 4500 acres of numerous farm blocks that were never taken up for farming.

Nungawurtina & Weina Paddocks purchased 1920 as one paddock. Separated by fencing in 1965 for easier mustering. Popes Paddock purchased 1922 from Pope family; 3340 acres. Police Paddock purchased 1930 from Pope family, 520 acres. Originally owned by Police force in which they rested spare police horses. Valley, Oratunga & Horn’s Camp Paddocks purchased 1940 from Ron Horwood. Total area approx. 46 square miles. Was perpetual lease but transferred to Pastoral lease in 1937 as that was the cheaper option. Bill’s Paddock purchased 1972 from Mona’s brother Bill Kipling Werta Paddock purchased 1973 from Ken Lord, Angorichina Station. Area is 16.5 square miles. Divided into two paddocks named Werta and Waterfalls by fencing in 1977.

Alpana today spans 60 000 acres (207 km²) and runs approx. 3000 Merino sheep producing excellent 20 micron wool. Alpana’s tourism developments began in 1994 when the twenty year drought began to bite, wool prices were very low and sheep prices worse. The Henery family needed to diversify in order to stay on their beloved land and support the four generations then financially dependent upon it. Tourism and pastoralism proved to work well together and continues to do so. The shearers’ quarters was upgraded by John K (G4) and two bush camping areas established. Next came the 4WD tracks and guided tours. John K built Nungawurtina Hut, with help, in 2000-2002 as a replica shepherd’s hut in order that this part of European settlement history lives on and as another accommodation option. The Ensuite bathrooms and powered sites were designed and built by John K (G4) with tourism grant funds in 2002. The shelter at the powered sites was built in 2013. Power was connected to the Trees Area campground and pit toilets built in Bills Paddock campground in 2017. Another diversification came in the form of the recycle depot and truck purchased from Angorichina Village in 1996 by John K and David. A newer truck was purchased in 2017. David (G5) and Sally took over the tourism side of the business at the end of 2007 when John K (G4) and Jan retired to Stansbury. David and Sally have been working on maintenance and improvements as time allows. The next chapter of the Alpana Station story has arrived. David and Sally’s son John W (G6) married Keziah May Carter from Kapunda in September 2017. They have chosen to live at Alpana to be the sixth generation of the Henery family here.

Alpana Station We arrived at this beautiful, 200 Sq Km Sheep Station in Central S.A at a nice little town called Blinman. We were offered a few different accommodation styles to park our van, we ended up Camping in “Bills Paddock” which was a very roomy campground along a dry creek bed, with beautiful River Red Gums. There were 2x clean drop loos and fires allowed, with plenty of wood on the property that can be collected (handy in S.A as you cannot collect from the bushland) There is a 4WD track on the property that takes you up to a beautiful 360 degree view for sunset. Bait Plate to

Not the White Cliffs of Dover

Kind of crazy that I get off a boat, to go and have a holiday on another one, but hey, you Just can never have too much fun messin’ around on boats. While not as famous as the White Cliffs of Dover, but in my view just as spectacular, the Red Cliffs of Weipa are virtually an unknown gem and one of the great natural wonders of Australia. Towering bauxite cliffs, which rise 60 feet from a sandy strip, right on the water, they have a magical reaction to sunshine, not dissimilar to Uluru. These cliffs seem to almost come alive in a late afternoon sun, glowing red and casting and golden hue across the ocean and surrounding landscape. To sit off Red Cliffs in the late afternoon, enjoying a cold beer, and reflecting on a day spend fishing and sighseeing further down to coast to Pera Heads and Boyd’s Bay is an experience shared by only a select few and yet is a part of Australia’s natural wonders which really should be experienced. You need to be there at dusk; long after the guided fishing skiffs have already blasted back to Weipa some 35 kilometres North to witness the breathtaking transformation from the

dull dusty bauxite red to the explosion of luminescent colours which burst forth in the setting sun. The unique structure of Red Cliffs which has evolved over time, include a 12 meter-deep top layer of bauxite sitting on a lower layer of white clay. Water from the wet season seeps easily through the bauxite, hits the clay layer and then follows this through to the cliffs where it virtually becomes a waterfall which starts along the clay line and provides amazing opportunities for an outdoor shower after some hard days fishing the salt water. Further South at Pera Heads a large freshwater stream gushed millions of litres of fresh water onto the beach and no visit is complete without a “dip” in Pera Pool or a shower at Red Cliffs “living the dream” of absolute isolation and sharing a unique experience with friends or family. This is very much “off the beaten track” country. No roads and no access other than by water, but an option to experience a “caravanning” type holiday is available from Weipa

Houseboats. The road to Weipa is open every year from early May and is constantly being upgraded with plans to be fully sealed by 2020. It will, in time get busy, as access become easier and gentler on vehicles and vans. The campgrounds are clean, functional and well serviced but it is Weipa Houseboats which gives the real opportunity to experience the wild untamed and remote part of Queensland in safety, comfort and with the convenience of the ultimate cross over between boat and caravan. These houseboats are never going to win a beauty prize but are tough, functional and a wonderful holiday option either for a group of hardcore fishos, with friends, or showing the kids a part of Australia unlikely ever to be subjected to mainstream tourism pressure. “Bareboating” a Weipa Houseboat is not like bareboating in the Whitsundays. Its charm is in the isolation and the level of self-reliance required. There are no marinas, no resorts to pull into and most certainly no snorkelling gear on board. It is about seeing and experiencing a

place that has changed little since the dawn of time, spending an entire day without seeing another soul, spotting crocodiles, birdlife, manta rays, wild pigs, beachcombing and just spending time soaking up the awe-inspiring vistas which present themselves daily as well as the simple pleasures of catching a fish or 2 for dinner. While a group of us have gone every year for some 15 years now and go as hard-core fisherman, as we have aged and mellowed it has become more and more about just “being there”, the food we eat and the new little places we find. As an avid fly fisherman there is no place in Australia like Weipa as it is on the west coast of Cape York, not only do you experience the sun setting into the sea but also have the persistent SE trade winds blowing off shore making Red Cliffs a calm anchorage from which to explore in even the windiest weather and with clear calm inshore beaches and the wind at your back, coupled with lots of fish and lots

of fish variety the western cape is without question amongst the very best fly fishing destination in the world.. Did I mention the food? The basic rule on our houseboat adventure is I cook, somebody else washed up but meals of Chili Mud Crab, Crispy Skinned whole fish, beer battered barramundi fillets and great steaks usually sets the scene for coming home a kilo or 2 heavier then we go away, but hey, that is what holidays are all about. Post on my blog site if you want any recipes and everything is cooked on a combination of a big top deck BBQ and 2 little portable camp stoves. This years highlight meal was slow roasted pork belly, roasted garlic mash, green beans, spinach and a chilli apple compote. Relatively easy in my resatuarant kitchen but doing this for 9 hungry blokes on a houseboat had me under the pump. Our Chili Crab cook-ups are legendary and I use the recipe

developed over time in the restaurant which has become a Whitsunday Icon dish. Rather than fill page space here just drop me a line on my blog or Facebook page for the recipe. Weipa Houseboats are really for the experienced skipper and a crew with adventure in mind but offers the only real access to one of Australia’s true natural wonders and should be on every adventure travellers bucket list of “see Australia First” destinations. While it, in itself may never get too busy, Weipa Houseboats only has 2 vessels which book out well in advance. While their web site may be all about the fishing, which will always be the main drawcard, I actually don’t think they quite realise what they have up there. It is an almost religious experience, not unlike the first time you see Whitehaven Beach in the Whitsundays or Uluru. Filled with awe and wonder at just what mother nature has blessed us with.

Motorhome Peer2 Peer Testimonial -

By David B (QLD Owner)

“After renting a motorhome in Tasmania a few years ago we fell in love with the motorhome lifestyle and added a motorhome to our family. The idea of privately renting came up after some friends were wanting to use one. Soon after their successful rental, I found the website and joined up. Initially we were hoping that we might get the odd booking and could hopefully cover things like insurance/rego etc. We found the initial engagement and setup of our motorhome very easy to do and we were helped along the way. There is loads of support, user-friendly systems and a friendly voice to speak to. The support from Caravan camping hire is fantastic. We soon found there was lots of interest in potential renters, and we started getting bookings within days of signing up. We have been totally amazed with the number of bookings and based on current bookings and paid deposits we are going to easily exceed $25,000 this year! This has allowed us to change our lifestyle and has allowed me to change work commitments and now spend more time at home with family. While the initial idea of renting was a little daunting with concerns of damage etc we have found this to be minor and while we have to account for additional servicing and maintenance for the motorhome (we want it to be in the best possible condition for our renters) we still find this to be a positive experience. With the success of our first rentals of our motorhome we are now planning on expanding into another one very soon. We really enjoy the whole process of enquiries, bookings etc and especially love sharing experiences with our renters. I think the whole personal touch experience that we can achieve with this Peer to Peer rentals is so many times more satisfying for all involved.

If you're a parent and have been on road trips with your kids then you can certainly relate to all of the above. As a family of four we set out on a two week round trip from our home in the Sunshine Coast to Alice Springs. Destination, The FINKE DESERT RACE. Ryan, my husband was competing for his 7th year in a Pro Class Buggy and of course we decided to make an adventure out of it. If was our first major road trip and we were certainly spoilt with the use of a Kimberley Kamper S Series Caravan. Knowing that we had the reliability and comfort of the "KK", it made for a less challenging trip with the kids then I had anticipated.

Fitted out with a spacious en-suite and hot water at the press of a button, as well as an easy to use kitchen and heating for the cold desert nights. The "KK" being 100% off road allowed us to take the roads less traveled and really enjoy what the Australian outback has to offer. Each night was a different stop and when arriving before sunset the extra outdoor kitchen gave a genuine camping experience.

We never felt limited to where we could go or spend a night. Although it did not stop the nagging from the back seat, our trip was a great experience and one we will never forget. We look forward to further adventures in the future and would highly recommend a Kimberley Kamper.

IT’S FOR BOATERS

Exploring Janowen Hills 4WD Park What are you doing this weekend? It's the most common question I'm asked on a Friday afternoon at the school pick up. Having a 10 month old, 4 year old and a 5 year old (all boys), spending weekends couped up at home is rarely my idea of fun! Still, fellow parents are surprised, even downright shocked, that we choose to get away in our caravan as often as we do! I feel sad for said parents mostly: for the memories lost, for the places that remain undiscovered, and for the opportunities missed. However, perhaps it takes a certain kind of family to make a camping weekend enjoyable: it certainly takes organisation! One of our more recent camping weekends was out to a lovely spot that we'd never been before: Janowen Hills 4WD Park. Located approx 2 and a half hours west of the Gold Coast, Janowen Hills is a 4WD park with camping available onsite with two campgrounds within the 4WD park. Given that we left late Friday afternoon (how good is it waking up at the campsite as opposed to setting up on one day and packing down the next, am I right?!), we hit a bit of traffic until we were well away from the coast. After that, the lights were few and far between, and the air of calm slowly found it's way into our trusty Patrol. Upon arriving at the 4WD park, we immediately drove into the first campground. It's easily accessible by regular cars (in fact, I saw a pretty mint R33 Skyline drive in and park up on Saturday!) for those simply wanting a peaceful place to camp with bush views, minus the suspension-flexing stuff! There were heaps of spaces left and we found a prime position right by the creek (the creek was inaccessible in this particular space due to the thick bush going down the bank, which was perfect for us!). We set up the Jayco, got the kids in bed and rugged up for a cuppa beneath the stars before turning in ourselves for the night.

The following morning we were treated to the beautiful views of true Australian countryside, with hills all around, beautiful gumtrees (which we carefully avoided camping & parking beneath) and plenty of space around our camp area for the boys to ride their bikes. The amenities block was also fairly close, and bins were well placed around the entire site to ensure there is absolutely no excuse for rubbishing our beautiful country! Just inside the entrance way is a shed with bread, milk and the like available for purchase. This is also where the camping & 4WDing rates can be paid: it added up very quickly given that we stayed 2 nights and the rates for camping are charged at per person not per site, plus 4WD access is of course extra. I was a little disappointed to find that showers were then token operated (tokens which had to be purchased from the office/ convenience store within operating hours) on top of the rates charged, as I always thought that by charging by the person this would cover toilets and shower amenities, however that was the only disappointment of the weekend. The creek runs through the park and crosses over several times so there are plenty of places to access the water whether it be for crossing in the fourby or paddling in. I'm not fond of water (well more the creatures that live in water), myself, so I stayed on the bank with our bub. Our older 2 boys went in with hubby and they had a fine time splashing around as it was quite a warm day! The second camp ground is right by the creek and is very much accessible so this camping area was far more popular with the 4WD owners than the first campgrounds. We found the 4WD tracks to be well cleared and maintained, and the map given to us upon payment was pretty accurate. There was a lot to explore and see over the weekend! Sunset on Saturday meant a deafening chorus of cicadas by the creek! They were so loud! The boys asked nonstop questions about where the cicadas were and what they looked like, and I found myself recounting everything I knew about cicadas which I remember learning in Year 1 of school, and being amazed at their short lifespan above the dirt! We'd never share that conversation at home without the prompting of nature! After the sun had gone down, the cicadas quietened down and we sat around the campfire in rare silence and utter contentment.

The next morning the kids got up with the sun and were thrilled to discover HEAPS of cicada shells: seriously, there were SO MANY! They were on blades of grass, awning ropes, fence posts, even bike tyres! The kids collected them in their dump truck and had a source of unexpected entertainment for hours! Our middle son, 4 years old, also spent quite a bit of time over the weekend collecting small sticks and stacking them in a teepee shape as pretend campfires. So to the parents who ask "what do the kids actually DO though?"...it can't be explained. They just play! After a little more exploring of our favourite tracks of the day before, we headed back to camp to make a picnic lunch to eat on the road, and packed up the Jayco. With our regular camping we've got the set up and pack down to a fine art, and I stay out of the way when hubby winds her down! Having the caravan set up in terms of bedding, cookware etc for the next trip means there's little in the Patrol to unpack when we get home: buying our little caravan was one of our best investments! I love having a sink set up, and I particularly love having a place for everything. Driving home we got to see all the countryside that we missed on our drive out in the dark, and it was pretty mesmerising. Of course I felt obliged to point out any cows I saw along the way, which were quite a few, and it appears to've become a tradition haha! We always talk about our favourite parts of the weekend on the way home, and consider when our next getaway will be, and to where. It's getting harder to get the time away as I return to work and between the kids swimming and the like, but it's our therapy and such a wonderful opportunity to connect with the kids without the distraction of the mundane. So we'll continue to get out there whenever we can, even for only a short while at a time and not far from home. It is so worth it!

Camping Tips with Emma George

Keeping it Cold

There’s nothing better than getting the family outdoors to spend quality time together and create memories that can last a lifetime. Camping is easy, affordable and a great excuse to get away for a couple of days, leave electronic devises at home and enjoy fresh air and freedom.

» If you are only camping for a few days or you have access to ice, a good quality esky is a great option. » Freeze a meal before you go as it can work as a freezer brick and all you have to do is reheat it for dinner. » Use drinking water and freeze it in plastic bottles as it is great for keeping food cold and you can drink the water once it has defrosted. » Keep your esky in a cool area and ensure your food is secure from animals such as birds and marsupials. » If you are camping for extended periods of time or camping regularly, think about investing in an Engel. » Engels can be used as a fridge or a freezer, keeping your food at a stable temperature. If I am camping for long periods, I often use my Engel as a freezer and I take an esky as well. I freeze my meat and defrost it in the esky and I also freeze ice bricks for use in the esky. » A fridge is a great investment as it means you can camp for extended periods and know your food will be cold. You don’t need to worry about being near a shop and it means you can visit remote camp sites, eat as well and your food will remain cold.

If you haven’t camped before then maybe try a caravan park or a campsite with facilities and once you get your confidence, branch out to national parks or perhaps try bush camping. This guide lists some of the local caravan parks and national park camping areas which are easily accessible for the weekend. Whether it be on the beach in the bush or alongside a river, there are plenty of camping options available and many of these you can book in advance.

square plate which allows to minimise sinkage in softer ground when setting up. STOWAGE & POSITIONING Conveniently stowed for quick access when in emergency situations. Easy positioning under the vehicle for fast turnaround.

We were so excited to hit the Queensland coastline and trade in the red dirt for pristine white sand. Having million dollar views doesn’t necessarily mean you need to spend a fortune to enjoy the area. Check out our guide to ‘Beaching it on a Budget’!

AIRLIE BEACH Known as the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands

and Great Barrier Reef, Airlie Beach is the perfect location to set sail or explore the islands!

We splashed out (pardon the pun) and stayed at some caravan parks with the full water works,

which meant we had to be budget savvy with our adventures. Here’s what we did for FREE!

Hydeaway Bay is absolutely mint! As secluded as

its name suggests, this stunning pristine bay is free from the holiday crowds, shopping precincts or

busy traffic. The beach is postcard perfect, littered with massive shells, aqua water and palm trees. We spent the day lounging about at Cape

Gloucester Resort, where you can swim in their

pool, grab a bite to eat or a cold beer and soak it all in.

The small township of Dingo Beach is located on

the northern side of the Whitsunday Coast about a 40min drive from Airlie Beach. With miles of sandy

beaches, crystal clear waters and a stinger free net,

you can swim year round. We took our Red Paddle

Co paddleboard out and saw a turtle & ray! There’s a great beachfront pub to kick back and relax in too.

Cedar Creek Falls is located about half way

between Airlie Beach & Proserpine, with an easy 20m walk from the car park. Enjoy the pretty

waterfalls that flow in the wet season and take a cooling dip in the waterhole. If you’re feeling

energetic there’s bush walks up and around the falls too.

The hub of Airlie Beach is the esplanade; with cafes, bars & boutique shops brimming with

adventure seekers, families & backpackers. We strolled around the weekly Saturday morning

markets and Leigh drooled over the display of classic cars!

While the waters off Airlie Beach might look

inviting, between November - May they are full of

dangerous jelly fish. To ensure that everyone can

still cool off & take in the views the council built the Airlie Beach Lagoon, complete with family-friendly beach & park!

YEPPOON The relaxed township of Yeppoon is known as the ‘Gateway to the Capricorn Coast’ and is set to a

backdrop of sea, sand and islands. There is a heap of great activities and best of all, our top three are FREE!

The Bluff Point Walking Track offers both a 2.3km

circuit or easy 700m walk to Turtle Point where you can take in the amazing views of the coastline and islands while spotting turtles swimming below!

We saw at least three bobbing around.

The newly opened Keppel Kracken interactive water play area is equipped with cannons, jets, umbrella

bucket and sea creature sculptures. It’s tonnes of fun for the kids and located right on the foreshore with easy access to shops and BBQ facilities .

Another stunning new town feature is the Yeppoon

Lagoon - a huge 2500 square metre lagoon right on

the beach with epic views. Featuring an infinity edge pool, children’s play area, pumping tunes and a well priced café, this is a great place to spend the day.

TOWING MIRRORS Why Have Towing Mirrors? When towing a caravan / camper trailer the rear vision mirror is of little use as the view is obstructed. And depending on how big your caravan / camper is your side mirrors may not give you a clear view of any vehicles alongside or behind you.

A reversing camera fitted to the rear of your caravan will also provide a good rear view but will not provide good vision down both sides of your caravan or trailer. So towing mirrors will be required to compliment the rear view camera.

Why wouldn’t you give yourself the best chance of being able to see what’s around you and know what’s there and know you are doing the best you can to keep your family and other road users safe.

Rules and Regulations The driver must have an unrestricted vision down either side to the rear of the caravan or camper trailer and a clear view to see any overtaking or following vehicles. Check relevant laws for your state or territory

What are the best types ?? There are various types available bonnet, guard, door , clip on and full replacement mirrors available. They can range anywhere from $20 up to $800 for a set and as the saying goes ‘You get what you pay for’. They should be stable and as Sturdy as possible as any bouncing or vibrating can make it difficult for clear vision.

Suction cup or Strap on mirrors. These are more user-friendly as you can adjust from inside your vehicle. I personally have owned both sets and found the suction cup ones didn’t take long to come off and way too much vibration, could barely see anything out of them. While the strap on ones stayed on they still had vibration through them and wasn’t the clearest. Basically they made me legal but both were not effective.

Bonnet Towing Mirrors A metal cross-bar that extends from one side of bonnet to the other . Usually held on by clips inserted on each side of the bonnet near the wheel arch. A mirror is attached to each end on either side. Not user-friendly as you can’t reach to adjust from inside your vehicle.

Clip on mirrors There are many versions of the clip on mirrors and in my opinion these are the best Milencos and is currently what we are using. User friendly and very easy to install with no vibration at all. Very good value for money.

Ratchet strap / Braced style mirror Another very good mirror , Little bit of setting up to get them on but once on they are also very good. Easy to adjust, no vibrations with a good clear view of what’s behind you. Hint: when tightening the strap wet it will draw tighter and you will not have to re-tighten when it rains, another hint is to put a magnetic business card on the clean dry door where the pad touches this may help in stopping dust from being abrasive between the pad and paint.

Clearview mirrors Clearview mirrors are a full replacement of you existing mirrors, very user-friendly simply pull them out and extend them when required and push back in when not using them only down side in my opinion is they are quite big and look big in proportion to your vehicle .

Charging Deep Cycle Batteries A guide from Australia’s leading supplier of 12V caravan and camping products Prevent damage and ensure a long battery life

How does a battery charger work?

Incorrect charging is the main cause of damage to deep cycle batteries but can be easily avoided by following simple procedures and safety advice. Keeping your battery at the correct state of charge improves lifespan as well as reducing the risk of running out of power when away from home.

The deep cycle battery charger has three main jobs: getting charge into the battery, optimising the charging rate and stopping when the battery has reached full charge. Smart chargers work with most battery types and use the battery’s voltage to detect the type of battery and charge needed.

Charging is also an important consideration when storing your battery. Deep cycle batteries will selfdischarge if left without a load over an extended period of time and storing in an uncharged state can cause sulfation and damage performance.

If you are not using a smart charger to charge your 12V deep cycle batteries, the charging current should be at least 10% of the amp hour rating for a flooded lead acid battery or up to 30% for an AGM lead acid battery.

Bulk, Absorption and Float Charge

Charging time

Charging from Solar

Battery charging occurs in three stages; bulk, absorption and float charge.

Charging time is the time it takes for the reconstitution of the battery’s active chemicals to be completed while the cell temperature is kept at a safe level. This process stops when the termination voltage has been reached in order to avoid overcharging.

Investing in solar panels will allow you to charge your deep cycle battery with free energy from the sun, even when away from mains power.

Bulk charge refers to the first stage of the battery charging process, in which the rated maximum current is sent to the battery while maintaining a constant voltage. After this comes the absorption charge stage, which sees the voltage gradually lower as internal resistance increases. The final float charge stage occurs after the battery reaches its full charge and the charging voltage is reduced. This process is often referred to as a ‘maintenance’ or ‘trickle’ charge and is intended to keep an already charged battery from discharging. Although AGM deep cycle batteries self-discharge at a low rate, they will still require regular top-ups to avoid damage.

The charging time for deep cycle batteries depends on the number of amp hours it stores. Divide the amp hour rating of your battery by the amp rating of the charger and you’ll have an estimate of the time needed to reach full charge. For example, a 100 amp hour battery at a 50% stage of charge (50 amp hours) would take approximately five hours to charge on a ten amp battery charger. It’s important to avoid overcharging as this can severely reduce battery life. Using a smart charger can help avoid the problem of overcharging as it will automatically switch off when the correct level of charge has been detected.

After panels have been placed in the sun, they will need to be attached to a solar regulator, also known as a charge controller. 12 volt solar panels can produce fluctuating power that would damage a battery if left unregulated, but the solar charge controller keeps this voltage at a safe level. Most solar regulators also have the technology to switch to float charge when the battery has reached full capacity; eliminating the problem of overcharging. While charging from solar is dependent on the weather and can involve an initial setup cost, solar panels provide an inexhaustible and environmentally friendly energy source for your batteries. - Aussie Batteries & Solar

BLOCKCHAIN WILL HELP ADDRESS FEARS AS AUSTRALIA HEADS TOWARDS BECOMING A CASHLESS SOCIETY

At the end of 2017, the ABC asked whether Australia is on the brink of becoming a cashless society. In a study conducted around the same time, Australia ranked at around 7th in the race to become a cashless society. Despite being ranked 7th, countries such as Sweden, Canada and the UK are well ahead, poised to be one of the first completely cashless countries. Riksbank, Sweden’s central bank, reported that respondents paying in cash during 2018 is around 13%, down two percent from 2016, compared to the 37% of payments in Australia during 2016 according to the Reserve Bank of Australia. Cash withdrawals have also seen a decline, with cards taking the position of favourable payment option. The question of becoming a cashless society has sparked heated debate about what this journey means, especially how to address some of the biggest fears surrounding the move such as:

-identity theft -cyber attacks on centralized platforms -system manipulation -monopoly of fees Blockchain helps address some of these fears. Blockchain is a digital ledger system where transactions are continuously recorded (called blocks) in an incorruptible format. These blocks are then linked and secured through a network using cryptography. What this means is that, the information sent cannot be tampered with or hacked. So instead of one place holding all the information, there is a network of systems that validate the information, and then uses cryptography to code it publically. As we head towards a cashless society, blockchain technology is becoming a favourable way to send assets such as cryptocurrencies. Not only does it allow cross-border payments without any delay, but banking fees, transfer fees, exchange rates and system manipulation becomes a thing of the past. As we

discussed previously in an article about cryptocurrencies, banks don’t like that they may become somewhat irrelevant as a cashless society becomes the greater reality. They are recognising however the undeniable merits of blockchain, CommBank even having their own Head of Blockchain, Sophie Gilder, looking into its application. To read more about Sophie’s view of the threat and opportunity new technology such as blockchain brings head over to: https://www.commbank.com.au/guida nce/business/Blockchain-201711.html Blockchain technology is so incredible, that through applications such as smart contracts it may even eliminate the need for some lawyers and contract writers. We’ll talk about this more next month though. In the meantime, if this article has piqued your curiosity but you are not too sure yet how blockchain technology may work with payments and the banking system, have a look at this video:

Mobile living made easy.

To a Port or Shore The recent long weekend was a perfect opportunity to explore a bit further and we decided to have a look around Port Hedland, the other major town of the Pilbara. Port Hedland and Karratha have a classic inter-town rivalry but a change of scenery for a few days was needed, and to add to the excitement, fellow travelling family @rodgersarerolling where going to join us! Port Hedland is one of the busiest ports in Australia. In fact it is the highest tonnage port in Australia with a steady procession of massive ships transporting iron ore, gas, salt, manganese and livestock. You can sit in the park at the Harbour and watch the boats coming in and leaving with the help of the comparatively small tugboats any time of the day. The whole town is very much focused on its industry and BHP is prominent. There are however many natural wonders to explore as well.

There is a lot of beachfront and in the right season (October to March) Hedland’s beaches are a haven for hundreds of flatback turtles when they come ashore to nest and their younglings hatch. Obviously we were there at the wrong time to see this but if you go along to the beach at dusk when they are there you can witness something amazing. Pretty Pool is a popular beach and picnic area. We had a fantastic afternoon picnic, while beachcombing and playing in the playground. We decided against visiting the ‘clothing optional’ section of the beach. We figured while we really like @rodgersarerolling we didn’t need to get that close. Port Hedland is also one of the best locations to see the incredible Staircase to the Moon. There is a viewing platform just outside the Discovery Caravan Park at Cooke Point.

This phenomenon is only visible in places in the North West of Australia and is one of mother nature’s true wonders. In our short time in town we got a fair bit of exploring done, with the Port Hedland Courthouse Gallery which showcases some beautiful local artists; the Don Rhodes Mining Museum, which is an open air museum with trains, and artefacts from the towns mining history; various lookouts including the one on the expressway which is the best vantage point to see the towers of salt at the Rio Tinto Dampier Salt mine. There are many more Gallerys, tours and activities that can be covered with more time. Many of the tours are only held mid week though so try and line up your visit so to take advantage of these.

Libby & Layla Do you want to convince your parents to go on a trip around Australia? If so, you have come to the right place for I have gone on a trip around Australia for almost 600 days!! My name is Libby Grigaliunas and my Mum and Dad are the co-founders of the World's Biggest Garage Sale. The first reason why I feel so strongly about why you should go around Australia is because of the amazing experiences along the way.... examples include Uluru, Alice Springs, Cradle Mountain, Mount Kosciusko and Tasmania all of those give you experiences like skiing, climbing, bush walking and swimming at the beach or some hot springs. So as you can see, going around Australia is what you have to do!!

In addition to this, when you go around Australia you can meet new friends at new places and those friends who you meet might be on their own trip around Australia. If they are on their own trip, you can tell each other about the amazing places you've gone and share in the experience, then you can climb trees and explore your surroundings together. For my last argument to convince you, I would like to tell you the last reason why you should definitely go on a trip around Australia! You should go on a trip around Australia because‌. you can spend more quality time with your family and you can have your birthday somewhere you've never been before like Darwin, Sydney, Perth, Hobart or even Canberra now that would be cool!! Now sadly I have to say goodbye....so it's now your turn to start persuading your family to go on a trip around Australia!!

Until Next Time Libby & Layla
