Anglers unite in Evans Head Evans Head Fishing Classic

Professional fisherman and first-timers alike gathered recently in NSW’s Northern Rivers Region for the 21st annual Evans Head Fishing Classic. Held from the 8th to the 15th July, the event is held each year during the 2nd week of the NSW school holidays and attracts anglers from all over the country, who are keen to compete for more than $90,000 worth of prizes.

Major sponsors this year included Wilson Fishing Tackle Specialists and Gamakatsu, with the major prizes on offer including a Stessco Softride Boat (congratulations Daniella Rudd!), a Hitachi Package (congratulations Glenn Hitchens), a Nifty Boat Package (congratulations Jason Harrison!), a Mega Atomic Pack (congratulations Brendan Norman!) and a House Boat package (congratulations Glenn Armstrong!), all kindly donated by businesses in the local area. There were also a number of random, daily prize draws and over $19,500 in cash for winners of the various fishing categories.

The event was also a fantastic opportunity to raise money for local community and sporting groups, and a number of local businesses and community groups lent a hand sponsoring, volunteering and supporting various stalls, activities and exhibits. This year, the Evans Head Fishing Classic also partnered with the Boaties Group mobile media team (check out their online magazine, Liquid Life and Leisure), who provided informative updates throughout the week via their website and mobile Boaties App. Adult anglers could compete in one of two categories, the Eligible Species (dead) category, which included taylor, teraglin, cobia, mulloway, pearl perch and yellowtail kingfish or the Eligible Species (live)

category which included snapper (catch, photo & release), bream, whiting, flathead, dart and luderick. Cadets (from 13 to 17 years) and juniors (from 4 to 12 years) also had the choice of snaring bream, whiting, flathead, dart and luderick. The event this year was overseen by committee-appointed weigh master, Andy Phipps, who has been heavily involved in the fishing industry for almost 20 years and has M.C’d the Boyne Tannum Hook Up for the past seven. Andy was accompanied by Lindsay Doust. For those preferring less fishy pursuits, the event also hosted a heap of activities for the kids, including casting competitions, fishing clinics and sausage sizzles and adults could also have their share of fun viewing the variety of

There are heaps of great activities around this beautiful location, including bushwalking, wildlife spotting, swimming, surfing, kayaking and boating (you can even hire a boat or book your own professional fishing tour). There are also a variety of local restaurants nearby (try the Bowlo, Heng Lee Restaurant, Vespas on Oak or the Chill Café) ready and waiting to soothe those hunger pangs (or coffee craving) after a day of outdoor activity.

FIVE WAYS TO SAVE BY SHARING A YACHT Sharing a yacht is just one of the many ways to get out on the water. Find out what you can save by choosing a shared yacht ownership program.

1. Save your time

The constant demands of family and work in your life leave little room for the significant time required to maintain and service a yacht. When your yacht is professionally managed, you can spend your time enjoying the thrill of sailing instead of the time intensive tasks such as cleaning, repairing and servicing the various components. At the end of your sailing adventure, you can simply lock up your boat, step onto the pontoon and start planning your next journey.

2. Save your money

Yachts are expensive to purchase and maintain. Many people say that BOAT is an acronym for “Bring Out Another Thousand”. Sharing the cost of purchasing and maintaining a yacht through a syndicated ownership program, will afford you access to a much larger and

newer boat than what is otherwise affordable. In addition to sharing the regular costs of boat ownership such as berthing, insurance, regisration, antifouling and engine servicing, you can share the costs of expensive repairs or improvements with your fellow syndicate owners. 100% of the benefit of the repairs and improvements is offered for just a fraction of the cost.

3. Save the environment

a yacht requires teamwork, cooperation and communication. Unlike other lifestyle hobbies like golf or tennis, sailing can be enjoyed by couples and brings them closer together. The negative aspects of boat ownership such as cleaning, repairing and servicing are removed by shared ownership programs meaning your time on the yacht is relaxing and enjoyable for you and your partner.

The rise of marinas and the associate infrastructure required to service them places a significant strain on natural resources and the environment. Likewise, significant resources are required to build and maintain the many yachts that do nothing but sit in the harbour for most of the year. Multiple sailors sharing one boat, one marina berth and one set of marina infrastructure is good for the environment and natural resources.

5. Save your dreams

4. Save your relationships

ownership visit -

There is anecdotal evidence suggesting that couples that sail together stay together. Sailing

You’ve had that dream of getting on a yacht and sailing off into the sunset. The reality of household expenses, mortgage repayments, school fees and retirement savings are major obstacles to achieving this dream. Shared yacht ownership allows you to realise your dreams without breaking the bank.

Redefining The Camping Experience! For families, adventurers and explorers who prefer quality outdoor memories. SYSTEM Campers are designed and manufactured by PRITAB. PRITAB was established in 2011 to design and supply mobile accommodation to the recent mining boom. During this time PRITAB designed and provided solutions ranging from highly mobile skid and trailer mounted camps to the Cooper basin & Pilbara, to heli lift camps for the Papua New Guinea highlands. The camps were required to be fully self contained from cutlery & bed linen to power generation and sewerage treatment, plus they had to be very quick and easy to pack down and mobilise from site to site as this could happen quite often. They

26

were built for the robust Australian landscape and have been tried and tested in some of the harshest conditions Australasia has to offer. In 2014 Pritab achieved a Triple ISO certification for Quality, Safety and Environmental Management. Although the business was unable to justify maintaining the required audits, the management systems are still in operation The owner and Managing Director is Darren Cardiff. Darren holds a Master’s Degree in Project Management, with a background spanning more than 25yrs in the oil & gas industry, he is a keen camper and fisherman and loves spending time in the great outdoors with his family. PRITAB’s design and manufacturing facility is located outside of Toowoomba, Queensland. Ease of Setup Whilst travelling you have the ability to pull over and make a cuppa and

Wind Stable Umbrellas

Not your conventional umbrella With warmer temperatures approaching and summer on the horizon, it’s time to jush up the garden, dust off the deck and get ready for an endless array of BBQs and backyard time. But is your current entertaining area looking a little … well, tired? Then maybe it’s time you considered a little outdoor renovation. Since 2014, Finbrella has been dedicated to providing their customers with unique outdoor shade solutions, which are fashionable, durable and extremely versatile and they are remarkably wind stable. Peter Stransky (Finbrella’s founder and designer) maintains, “The enhanced wind stability of Finbrella’s design is compelling”.

Design principles After years of refinement in Perth (the world’s third windiest city), the strength of the company’s ‘Fin-technology’ means that their products, with the recommended anchoring, are structurally able to withstand winds up to 55kph. This is because they have been purposely designed to alleviate the ‘Mary Poppins Effect’, with its unique asymmetrical profile and canopy shape. Finbrella’s wind resistance design principles include free rotation of the canopy, so that they can respond bhbjljnkl to changes in wind direction and maintain the optimum aerodynamic position. All Finbrella models have a

Finbrella

hexagonal canopy shape calculated to provide the optimal shade area to weight ratio.

Anchoring systems So what about versatility? Finbrella have engineered a variety of windstable anchoring solutions for multiple situations and environments that combine aesthetics and functionality with cost effectiveness. Base options include fixed or moveable camlocks (great poolside, in the backyard or even on the boat), moveable pavers, ground spikes (ideal for camping and park events) and sand poles (hello, beach protection).

Materials The range of materials used by Finbrella are also top-notch and include high grade anodized and resin-coated aluminium, marine grade stainless steel, abrasion-resistant nylon. Furthermore, Finbrella uses the very best outdoor woven fabrics guaranteeing resistance to colour-fade, UV light, mould and rain for up to 5 years.

Colours Another fantastic component of the product’s versatility is that you can personalise your shade to suit your setting. Available in a stunning array of colours and patterns, Finbrella can also offer custom printing services, allowing virtually unlimited possibilities.

Range Finbrella offers a range of sizes for a variety of uses, from the F-160 weighing only 2.4kg, right up to their largest model, the F-400, which provides over 10.4 m2 of shade and features an interchangeable canopy that allows you to change-up your sun protection to suit different settings. Poolside, seaside, roadside, camping, fishing, picnicking, entertaining ... the applications are limitless, not to mention visually impressive. So visit their website today or call 1300 655 654 and discover why Finbrella offers solutions that are definitely not your conventional shade umbrellas. www.finbrella.com.au tom@finbrella.com.au Find us on

Precision Detailing is owned and operated by David Nichol. Dave has been in the detailing business since 2003, making all sorts of vehicles and vessels look amazing with his professional touch. Specialising in the marine side of things, David has a wealth of experience and services Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Whether you’re selling or just needing some maintenance done on your beloved boat, give David a call, you won’t be disappointed. Some of Precision Detailings services include: • Acid Washing - to brighten and whiten the gel coat and two pack surfaces, in the process of removing very heavy oxidization, rust and water stains.

• Cut and Polishing - by variable speed machine, only the highest quality farecla profile range is used. This will aid in restoring deep gloss, remove light marks, oxidization, replace valuable oils into the surface and offer some protection from the elements. • Waxing - usually done by hand, is applied to “good” gel coat that hasn’t been adversely affected by the elements and of course to freshly cut and polished surfaces. Only quality farecla marine products are used here. This will provide significant protection against the elements, provide an incredible deep gloss and make cleaning a whole lot easier. • Washing - both low and high pressure, done of course to remove any contaminants off of the surface and to aid with the longevity of the wax and polish.

• Metal Polishing - is usually carried out on stainless steel, removing the rust marks usually left behind by salt, and covering the stainless steel with a coating of wax which contains an anti corrosive ingredient for the best protection. • Upholstery Restoration - cleaning and revival of the colors found in marine upholstery these days, also the application of a rejuvenate to restore the color, gloss, look and feel of new vinyl with the added bonus of UV protection. For more information and to see more of David’s work, visit his website, give him a call or find him on Facebook. Is your boat moored quite a distance from where you live? Do you work away, travel a lot for work, constantly worried about if your boat is still safely tied to the jetty after that week of high winds, are the bilge areas still dry after that night-week of rain?

a fortnight minimum, however it’s hard considering he is not always available to do these important tasks, who can you trust to do all of the above, your neighbour or a friend? We’re sure he’s a good bloke but does he really know what he’s doing and what he’s looking for?

Being a boat owner, Ben use to travel a lot for work, and knows what it’s like to have these concerns, as much as he knows his boat is in extremely good condition and that the last time he was on it everything was working correctly, knowing he tied the mooring lines off correctly before leaving, but what if the high winds while he is away, stretch the ropes, letting the gelcoat become damaged from rubbing on the jetty etc., a hose clamp has started to deteriorate and the hose has started weeping from the hose tail on the through hull fitting. If your boat is moored at a marina will the marina manager notice that your mooring lines are lose and your boat is now on a slight angle, just enough to let the stern/bow rub on the jetty, the list goes on.

This is where Ben comes in. He is an experienced boatie, and at 34 years old and has been around boats all his life, including his own boat (36FT Mustang). Ben has done his own servicing on the boat including oil change, replacement of fuel pumps, replace injectors, replace water pumps, replace/repair bilge pumps, water impellers, drive belts just to name a few. He really does know what it takes to look after a boat!

Ben likes to run his engines, genset, air con etc, at least once

34

Do you need:

• Mooring lines checked & re-tensioned • Bilge pump area inspected & test of bilge pump (on-off) • Engine run & Visual inspection • Shore power check • Genset run & Visual inspection • Running of aircon units • External wash down (before or after a trip)

Let Boaties Group Custom Boat Care take the worry out of your Boat Care. They can assist you in one of the services they provide, or do all of them, from a one off or routine regular scheduled appointments, depending on your requirements. With Boaties Group Custom Boat Care, they can also get your trailer boat ready for a weekend out on the water if your too busy i.e. run engine, check batteries, steering friction, bilge pumps, wheel bearing re packing or replacement, wash down. Evans Head – a jewel in the crown of NSW’s beautiful central coast

Located in the Richmond Valley Shire of New South Wales’ Northern Rivers region, Evans Head lies 726 kilometres north of Sydney and has a population of just over 2800 people. An idyllic coastal town, it plays host to one of the largest holiday parks in NSW, with many sites offering prime waterfront views, and is favourably sandwiched between two uber-forested national parks. Six kilometres of surfing beaches, stunning scenery and calm waterways also make it the perfect location for a family holiday or a childfree, let’s-ditch-the-city surfing safari.

Beaches Evans Head tops the list with its endless wave-catching opportunities (particularly for beginners), great

fishing spots and picturesque lazeabout shores, followed by Airforce Beach, which is also patrolled during the summer holiday period. Offering no-permit access to four-wheel drive vehicles, it’s also an awesome spot for low tide, rock pool exploration and leash-free frolicking with the family fur ball. For the dedicated wax heads, Chinaman’s Beach is best left to the experienced, as is Shark Bay, a semi-secluded inlet adjacent to the southern break wall of the Evans River. Goanna Headland offers stunning coastal views and meandering walking tracks and the Evans River is the perfect spot for the kidlets to enjoy a fun-filled frolick. With its pristine waters, it’s also the ideal choice for water enthusiasts, with kayaking, canoeing, boating and

Plan ahead for the 2017 Financial New Year

A new year is meant to be about reflection and resolutions. But if you’re just relieved ‘tax time’ is done and dusted for another year, perhaps it’s time to put a little more effort into ensuring the end of the next financial year is a little more stress-free. Firstly, you need actual goals Clearly define your achievable, financial objectives and then prioritise them. Do you want to reduce your debt, save for an investment property or just simply establish some practical saving habits? Write your resolutions down, and then tell your friends and family about them – the more your goals are ‘out there’, the more likely you are to stick to them. Get organised There is no point setting clear-cut goals if your bills and financial documents are haphazardly hidden under a pile of clutter. Create some useable systems for monitoring expenses and filing paperwork (including tax receipts) and keep track of things with a finance calendar or download one of the many ‘budget tracker’ phone apps out there. Scheduled direct debits are great for paying bills and automatic savings transfers will ensure it happens before you get a chance to start eyeing of that new pair of shoes or fishing rod. Goal 1 – You want to reduce your expenses Expenses are unavoidable, however, there are ways you can lower costs - from refinancing your current mortgage and shopping around for cheaper electricity rates to curbing your cash splashing on ‘want (not need) to have’ items. Make a list of all your obligatory expenses and research ways you can save a dollar or two here and there. You’ll be surprised how quickly it mounts up. Goal 2 – You want to save more Spend less and you’ll save more. It’s a no brainer,

however it’s sometimes easier said than done. The key is to create a detailed savings plan (there are heaps of downloadable apps that can help) and stick to it. Work out your key expenses first, put a little aside for emergencies and then be vigilant about transferring what’s left into a high interest savings account. And leave it there. Shop around for the best bank rates as well. Because the market is super-competitive (and ever-changing), it’s often easy to find a better deal if you’re willing to do a bit of research and fill out a little paperwork. Goal 3 – You want to minimise debt Debt can be a downer, but the reality is most of us have it. Whether it be a car loan, mortgage or credit card payment, the downside to our society’s ‘must have it now’ mentality is that we pay for it in interest. Work out where you’re paying the most interest and target those payments first. In terms of credit cards, make sure you pay the minimum balance every month (and by the due date) or consider changing to a debit card, so that you’re only spending money you actually have. Goal 4 – You want to save for your retirement It may seem like eons away, but formulating a retirement plan early will ensure your future is something to really look forward to. All employers these days are required by law to contribute to their employees’ super funds, however voluntary contributions also have added benefits, including government co-contributions, depending on your income. Lastly, don’t forget to monitor your progress every month. If your financial ‘clean up’ is on the right track, you’ll start to see the rewards before you know it. And July 2017 will work out to be a little more non-taxing!
