LIQUID LIFE & LEISURE

From the Editor... Welcome Liquid Life & Leisure Legends Did someone say Easter? Is it just me or did we just finish celebrating Christmas and Australia Day? I hardly feel like I have been back at work long enough to justify another holiday, but hey I am not knocking it. Easter, so many chocolates, so many bunnies, so much commercialisation. Every year until this one I felt the need to ensure that the kids did not miss out, that it has almost become another Christmas. We are slowly replacing chocolates with gifts to be healthier, however then what? at the risk of losing focus on what actually Easter is all about. With Easter being here, there is so many things to see and do and events on the calendar that it really is worth getting out and about and making some memories while experiencing some great places around this spectacular Country, so beats eating chocolate at home.

These contributors are so passionate about their travels and experiences that we just love bringing them to you each month, so please take the time if you can to follow their journey, when working with such passionate people and we have so many supporting our publication, whether they are service providers, supplying products, recipe inspiration, or destination advice we find the publication oozes and I mean overflows with exceptional content, so we thank you all for being part of our passion and our dream, because without you we could not bring this to our community. Whether it is boating, caravan, camping, health travel or outdoors, as usual we have a great edition this month, with so much fun and experiences jam packed into 72 pages, so grab your favourite beverage, the best seat at your camp site, under the shadiest tree, get comfortable, settle in and enjoy the journey this edition is about to take you. Don’t just dream it, take action and start living life and making memories.

We are off to Poona Qld, Iluka NSW and Gold Coast Qld, and cannot wait to feature our trip in the next few editions.

#takingaction

We are excited by where our magazine is heading, we are getting so much support and traction. It was our main focus to always provide articles that have come from someone experiencing it and not researching it. We have some great people on board contributing and sharing their experiences with us month in month out, which is so much fun as I am not sure about you but it truly allows me to get firsthand knowledge of destinations and add to my bucket list.

LIQUID LIFE & LEISURE

Our second stop from Warrnambool on our Lap Of Oz is Robe SA. We had heard lots about it beaches, its amazing fishing and its great town centre rich with history. We were excited to stop in here and it definitely didn’t disappoint!

ROBE, SA is a beautiful coastal town about 4 hours drive from Adelaide or Warrnambool depending on which way your headed. It was originally a Shipping Port for the wool industry way back in 1847. It has a charming town centre including a couple of historic Pubs that have been operating since the 1800’s. We stayed at the fantastically maintained Lakeside Tourist Park, located on the waters edge of Lake Fellmongery and only a short stroll into the main street of town and all that it has to offer.

LIQUID LIQUID LIFE & LIFE LEISURE & LEISURE

The Park itself is well laid out, roomy and expertly maintained with lush lawns and landscaped gardens. The caravan sites are spacious and we easily manoeuvred our 23foot Jurgens through the park no worries. The camping area is great and has a heap of sites with plenty of shelter and shade. The newly appointed owners/managers are a lovely couple who are only to happy to help out with anything you need and some great advice on what the area has to offer.

We had an Adventure-packed week in Robe. Our activities included checking out Robe itself, finding out about its history and checking out the Heritage buildings around the town. We had an amazing day trip to Beachport via the 4wd tracks along the beach and through the Little Dip Conservation Park. A few afternoons were spent on the sands of Long Beach, which is only a few minutes drive from the Lakeside Tourist Village and it’s 4wd accessible. The relaxed atmosphere and flat hard sands really reminded us of Cable Beach in Broome, WA.

Recovery efforts

for Abell

In days after we experienced the biggest weather event to ever hit the Whitsunday region, the sun has shone and the spirits have remained high. Despite physical damage to infrastructure, boats, houses, businesses and native flora, the team at Abell Point and their extended families are all well and working hard to restore normality to their lives and to the marina. Considering the force and the duration of the system, the marina held up well. There was damage to the pontoon structures in the north marina due to the relentless wind and the consistency of the waves crashing over the rock wall at highest point of the tide and for hours afterwards. With a full assessment now complete, we estimate the replacement pontoons will take between 3 -4 months to be fully operational and will be brand

new, providing the much-needed opportunity to upgrade the north pontoons. The good news is this effects only A/ F/ G/ K arms and vessels in the north have been relocated to permit normal operations. There is minor damage to some pontoon fingers in the south marina and ongoing maintenance and repairs will be carried out over the next two months. However, on the plus side the marina village stood up well with only cosmetic damage to buildings, tenancies and infrastructure. The walkway to L arm was destroyed, however a temporary replacement walkway arrived immediately for L arm, permitted the resumption of fueling services in the next couple of days. The new walkway is being manufactured and will be ready for installation in 5 weeks. With 507 vessels berthed at the time TC Debbie hit land on the Whitsunday coast, we had two vessels sink in their berths and an additional three broke their lines with one ending up on the rock wall and the other two on nearby Shingley Beach. Various vessels

have cosmetic damage in the form of scratches, bent railings and torn sails, but insurance assessors for all major companies are already in town assisting boat owners with their claims. We are working closely with tenants and operators to ensure minimal disruption to their businesses and are pleased to advise that many charter operators are taking guests back out to enjoy the Whitsundays already. The marina is currently operating at around 80% capacity, which is normal for this time of year. Our main focus at the moment is to move forward with the recovery process to ensure we are at full capacity for the upcoming cruising season and that our valued customers will once again receive the Blue Carpet Treatment at our first-class marina facility. We would once again like to thank all our customers for their messages of support and well wishes. We will ensure we keep you all up to date with the progress we are making over the coming weeks and rest assured we are very much open for business.

THE RIGHT TIME IS NOW

For whatever reason, over the years there has been a misconception that the recreational lifestyle is either for the rich and famous or for the grey nomads. Have you ever considered the benefits of the outdoors, being a boat, a bike, a caravan or simply driving and exploring this continent of ours now?

Why wait till the body gets tired? Why wait till the kids have grown up and deprive them of the opportunity? Give consideration to the old saying “the right time is now. Australia wide we are entering the caravan and camping shows season. This not only allows to dream, it allows to see, feel and then purchase at a special show price that normally does not get repeated for the rest of the year.

The options are generally...

BUY

Get into it, take the plunge and give the couch at home a break. What you will get to see and do will never be on the TV screen and it will be with you forever.

UPGRADE

Most of the sellers will also take your old gear as trade in, they are short of stock, which allows you to jump into the new gear for much less outlay and without the fuss of trying to sell anything yourself.

STAY STILL Stay with what you already have but have your financial position checked.

Westcorp Capital are fully equipped to go through your financial position with you and to pin point where improvements may be made, be it a refinance of your gear or a complete package which may even include your mortgage. There is hardly a case that cannot be improved. If you are in the market for the life changing plunge, contact Westcorp Capital before you make the final

commitment as they have put together show special packages that will be hard if not impossible to beat. We all hear on the news that the interest rates are at their lowest and in fact, the cycle of increase in interest rates has started. Now will be a good time to lock away some of your commitments with a fixed lower rate and isolate yourself from the movements of the money market.

“ Give consideration to the old saying “the right time is now

7 DAY S IN

South West Queensland /thegreatescapeaustralia

Day 1 & 2 CUNNAMULLA - CURRAWINYA NATIONAL PARK We left Cunnamulla where we’ve been working for the last 7 weeks and travelled 170kms (including 100km on dirt roads) to Currawinya National Park where we camped on the Ourimperee Waterhole for 2 nights. Like all Qld national park sites this costs $6.15 per adult per night and was a beautiful spot with toilets and showers (although they were a fair way from where we were camped) plus an old shearing shed and shearers quarters nearby to explore. Currawinya National Park is home to a couple of beautiful lakes – some fresh water and some salt, plus a unusual rock formation called The Granites which is home to a population of feral goats plus a few roos, and which offers great views of the surrounding landscape. Currawinya National Park is also home to a predator free enclosure (not open to the public) put in by the Save the Bilby Fund to house a population of critically endangered Bilbies in an area where they can be safe from feral cats & foxes.

Day 3 CAVE HILL QUARRY VIA THARGOMINDAH We travelled approximately 180kms on dirt roads from Currawinya National Park to the small town of Thargomindah. For part of this drive the road follows the NSW/QLD border and so we had NSW to our left & QLD to our right, and the road was full of goats, goannas, emus & roos. From Thargomindah we drove another 200kms on a single lane bitumen road to ‘Cave Hill Quarry’ a free camp listed on Wikicamps. Like most places at this time of the year we had this spot all to ourselves and it was stunning – a lovely little outcrop of rocks that you could climb for beautiful 360 degree views and a gorgeous sunset.

Day 4 QUILPIE VIA EROMANGA From Cave Hill Quarry we drove to the town of Eromanga, which claims to be the furthest town in Australia from the sea. The main reason we headed towards Eromanga was to check out the Eromanga National History Museum – a working dinosaur lab that has only been open to the public for about a year, but which has grand plans for the future. Your $25 entry fee includes a 1 hour guided tour where you get to see palaeontologists at work on ancient dinosaur bones and view some of the biggest bones ever found in Australia. Well worth a visit! From Eromanga we drove across to the town of Quilpie where we climbed Baldy Top Lookout for great views and free camped on the Bulloo River for the night.

Day 5 YOWAH From Quilpie we headed south to Yowah, a small town in the middle of a cattle station built around a community of opal miners. Like most outback towns Yowah was a really friendly place, and also has a great free camp (which even had hot showers and flushing toilets!), making it well worth a stop for a night or two. A lot of the town was closed for the off season but we still managed to spend a few hours in their artesian hot pool ($2.50 per adult), checked out the Yowah Bluff for great views (that you can drive to, so no walking required), and looked at some of the opal the town is famous for. Plus there was a ‘world’s greatest shave’ event on the day we were there, so we joined in with the locals, donated some money, had a sausage sizzle, and managed to win 2 bottles of wine by getting 4th place in the raffle.

Day 6 EULO After spending most of the day in Yowah winning raffles we drove a short way to Eulo, another town known for its artesian hot springs. We spent the night free camped in a beautiful shady spot on the Paroo River just west of town, where for the first time this week we shared the spot with some other campers.

Day 7 & 8 CHARLOTTE PLAINS STATION VIA CUNNAMULLA We finished up our week and our loop of South West Queensland by passing back through Cunnamulla (with a stop off at the local pool) and driving 50km east to Charlotte Plains station. Charlotte Plains is a sheep and cattle station that has camping and rooms available year round, and whose main attraction is an uncapped artesian bore that has free flowing hot bore water straight from the ground at an almost too hot 46 degrees. The best part is they’ve got a couple of old baths right by the bore drain that you can fill up with piping hot bore water and soak away to your hearts content. The camping area ($28/night) by the bore has drop toilets and showers, but if you want a bit more luxury you can camp by the old shearing shed where they have flushing toilets and power available. Sitting in your own private hot bore bath and watching the sun come up, or gazing at the stars with a glass of wine is absolutely magic & was a perfect end to our week in South West Queensland.

the History...

! p u S f O Mick Slattery is Surefire Boards founder, head shaper/designer & a surf and SUP fanatic. Mick talks us through his journey into the Stand Up Paddle world. One of the great things about SUP is that you can do it almost anywhere. All you need is a body of water, and any water will do, whether it is a lake, creek, river, dam, or

the ocean, just jump on and off you go. Apart from the fitness aspect of SUP (It will keep you toned and strong) it is also FUN. I always see people smiling when they are SUP’ing. Whether they just paddled 10km’s or they are soaking wet because they just fell off for the 15th time… they are usually smiling and laughing.

Back in 2009 when Surefire Boards started, (initially called SFS Squared but no-one could pronounce it) no one was really stand up paddling in Australia, it still had that stigma, an almost hate about it. People would just scoff at you, it was pretty funny actually. I had been wanting to try SUP surfing for a while as

we had a terrible run of small onshore surf that was simply unsurfable on a shortboard, I wanted to keep fit and still be out in the ocean catching whatever little bump came along. I can still remember the looks and the comments I was getting when I told people I had a Stand Up Paddle board. It was like I had turned to the darkside and was now an enemy. But I knew straight away that SUP would change lives for the better. My first attempt at surfing was a major failure, my mates were laughing so hard as I flailed around in the whitewater trying to catch a wave, falling over the side if any chop hit the board and looking like a total goose, but I knew I had to keep trying. It didn’t take long before I was cruising along the face and realised I already needed a smaller board. That is when I decided to shape my own. Back in late 2009 early 2010 I knew the way I wanted to surf a SUP, and the size of the

boards just wouldn’t allow it. We designed a range of boards, outlines and sizes to push the boundaries of where we thought SUP surfing should go, one of which was a 7’6” model we called the “Slayer”. The Slayer was 7’6” x 30.5” x 4.5” with a double flyer (a cut into the rail line near the tail to narrow the outline) and was 126L and went insane from the getgo. The Slayer allowed us to pump down line of the wave like you would on a shortboard, and also allowed us to perform cutbacks, and surf more top to bottom, which opened our eyes to what was possible SUP surfing. We then turned our attention to cruiser boards, race boards and downwinders, entering every competition we could and even helped set up 2 x Stand up paddle board clubs in Sydney to actively grow the sport, and encourage people to try it. It is sort of crazy to think that Stand up

VISIT US AT: www.surefireboards.com

paddle boarding is still such a relatively new sport that being in business for over 8 years makes you a veteran in the industry. Surefire Boards will continue to focus on producing the best quality products on the market, continue to provide the best customer service possible and continue to spread the Surefire Boards vibe, which Mick says in incredibly important.

“We all lead such fast

paced, hectic lives, and getting out on the water and into nature provides us with an opportunity to be in the moment, free from all of our outside influences and stress. Take it one step further and catch a wave and you have pretty well reached Nirvana, you cannot focus on anything else but the wave, the feeling, and the stoke. I guarantee you will have a smile from ear to ear.” Why wouldn’t you want to SUP?

to

T V or not

This topic seems to stir up any forum you are on. There are those that would not even consider taking a tv on their holidays, and then there are the folks that could not possibly leave home without it. I must admit we sit in the “must” take the tv with us group, we are all for this comfort, and I don’t mean just the TV, we have Foxtel and every show on every package available to us when we are on holidays. We have had our trusting automatic Sat dish installed to allow us with this little pleasure. This by no measure means that we sit around all day and watch it though. We love every bit of being outdoors and experiencing the holiday together as a family. Whether that is fishing, bike riding, tubing, playing cards, playing tourist and taking a nice drive, the list goes on.

24

However after a big day of exploring and bonding as a family, the time comes that any sane parent needs and that is to make dinner, sort the kids and put the tv on for them, while I disappear into a relaxed frenzy with a nice glass of wine, hubby and the sunset. Once we have enjoyed dinner, I must admit I too like to disappear to watch some tv before retiring to bed, whether that be sport or our favourite show. Television is a great asset to one’s world if like anything it is in balance. We learn a lot from various shows that help us with our business, our health, or just to relax and switch off and perhaps have a hearty laugh. We believe there is a place for the tv on holidays, it gives everyone a chance to take time out to chill.

LIQUID LIFE & LEISURE

to

T V

Not every situation requires a book, a deck of cards, or to be outside. We are all entitled to a little tech and tv time and more so on holidays. As a full time, working mum I don’t get much time for tv on a normal day and a normal week, so when holidays do come around give this girl a balance of outdoor experience, a good book, board games a tv and my gorgeous family and my world is complete. So if you want my vote on this topic, then I assure you, hands down our tv and automatic satellite dish are a very vital part of our holiday. If you are in the market to make your viewing experience easier than you need to welcome a Vansat automatic Satellite dish to your family.

OUR TOP 3 REASONS

you should invest in a Trail-A-Mate Jack

01 02 03

SAVE YOUR BACK Whether you already have a bad back, or you have a healthy back that you want to keep that way, these jacks are ideal. There is no winding motion which anyone that has owned a boat or caravan know the strain this causes when hooking up / unhooking your van/trailer. STABILITY A trail-A-mate is a lot more stable than a traditional jockey wheel, due to its 100 x 100 square plate which allows to minimise sinkage in softer ground when setting up. STOWAGE & POSITIONING Conveniently stowed for quick access when in emergency situations. Easy positioning under the vehicle for fast turnaround.

The Trail-A-Mate is supplied with 2 jacking brackets to weld to your chassis which makes it great for changing a flat tyre and no more crawling under the van, which if you have ever experienced this is worth every $ spent. So if you want to make your set up and pack up easier, then get one of these on your van.

Barefoot Smiles Life We are celebrating 6 Months on the road in our Toyota Hi-ace camper van named Luna! Van life has been good for the soul allowing us to focus on what’s important. Travel, surfing, and the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the practice of living with less. Eating healthy delicious food, taking photo’s and meeting like-minded people. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle while living in a van hasn’t been without ups and downs. But this is the flow of life and it’s in the hard work we have put into maximising every experience that we want to share. Here are our top tips on mindful travel from our journey so far!

1. Buy local, seasonal fruit & vegetables Buying locally means fresher more affordable fruit and veggies. We are always on the lookout for local farms selling direct to the public and side of the road honesty boxes. Community run organic farms are popping up everywhere in Australia, these are road side gold mines

2. Whole food Co-ops Co-ops are community owned, local business run by volunteers meaning they are the cheapest way to stock up and an opportunity to meet some like-minded locals! They stock grains, rice, nuts and seeds but, don’t’ forget to take your own bags and containers.

3. Storage There’s a small fridge in the van around 30 liters used for easily perishable veggies, open rice milk and leftovers. We store the rest of our fruit and veggies in a cane basket. Great for bringing green freshness to the inside of the van. Bulk dry stores are kept in cupboards under the bed, which at lunchtime converts into seating arrangement for two. Any items we use on a daily basis are decanted into recycled jars and stored in our very small pantry under the sink.

4. Sustainability Living in a van makes you very aware of just how much waste we create. Do your bit to minimise the impact – Don’t use plastic bags, avoid

buying anything packaged and always recycle. We make a point of collecting any rubbish we find along the beach or in the free camp sites we stay and take it with us.

5. Abundance – giving & receiving We love to travel and live mindfully, taking only what we need and giving back wherever we can. When you connect to nature in this way the universe will always take care of you. Keep an open mind and trust that you will be provided for. From our experiences we have written a healthy eating plan designed for the conscious traveler. The plan consists of meals that meet the body’s nutritional needs while being affordable and simple enough to prepare. Check out our FREE Healthy Eating Plan for more: http://barefootsmiles.life/free-healthy-eating-plan/

If what the weather people tell us is true, we are experiencing some changes in weather patterns Australia wide. While some areas have floods, others may be having fires, some have cyclones and some are just perfect this time of the year. Any plan we ever make is the basis for the changes we will make to it. So if you are currently travelling or planning to travel, please check the weather patterns applicable to the area

in which you are or going to. But remember, changing or adjusting your plans does not mean forgoing the experience or the enjoyment from the experience, it’s just the timing of it all which may allow you to do more, see more and enjoy more, so stress should be kept to the minimum. Equally important is the cover you have for your gear and possessions. Is your policy covering for floods? Is your policy covering for fire?

George and Alyce met in 2010 when Alyce contacted George in regards to a kombi he had for sale on carsales, as she had a lifelong dream of travelling Australia in an original Volkswagen Kombi.

"We allow our vans to go anywhere, however we have a 200km per day travel cap on, to ensure our vans are looked after," said Alyce.

"I'm not too sure where my love for kombi's come from but at the age of 7 I made a little clay pinch pot which looks remarkably similar to one so I guess it was just born in me" Alyce recalls. George had said the van he had was inappropriate, and the camper he had in his shed was one day going to start his business dream of hiring. However the next day and a little more thought, George called Alyce and said “I'll restore it for you”. Three months later the yellow and white kombi was complete and ready for her, which she was quick to name “Applejack” and Alyce embarked on a journey around Australia. Alyce travelled from the Whitsundays through the outback up to Darwin solo, then a childhood friend joined her across and down to Perth when she continued the adventure solo again. The friendship between George and Alyce continued to grow, and after returning to the Whitsundays it was not long before she was at his doorstep with the kombi he had restored for her. It was in 2012 that they created Hire a Kombi and while they only started with 1 van, the fleet now consists of 5 kombi's and soon to be another with a beetle.

The business sees a number of young families, grey nomads, artistic and professionals drive away daily in their vans from 1 day through to week long travels. The location of Hire a Kombi, allows a beautiful unique holiday to the Grampians, Great Ocean Road, across on the Queenscliff ferry to Phillip Island or Wilsons Prom National Park and for those who are lucky enough to take longer often venture across to South Australia or North to New South Wales. "I think we are the only company who allows our kombi's to travel interstate so we are unique however also crazy" laughs George. "It's been a really hard road, but very rewarding as we meet wonderful people and we are paving our way for a nice simple lifestyle with our kids” said Alyce. The fleet consists of 4 campers and one microbus which seats 8, all are self-drive. If you are thinking of buying a kombi but want to experience one first this is the perfect way to see what you want in your van and having both automatic and manual on the fleet gives most the opportunity to drive, providing you are over 21yrs of age. For more information on this great experience and unique style of holidaying, please contact the team from Hire a Kombi - www.hireakombi.com

Squidding made Ezy’! People of all ages and countries enjoy catching and eating squid but not so when it comes to cleaning them, as I found out on my first disastrous cleaning attempt. That experience prompted me to think there had to be a better way. Over a year or two and, after many prototypes and considerable product testing, I came up with a tool that made the onerous task of cleaning squid much cleaner and easier. With practice anyone can clean squid from start to finish in under a minute – a huge benefit if you have bagged out on squid. The feedback from customers has been more than encouraging. Many have said using these tools has cut their cleaning time by half. Shane Mensforth, the Editor of SA Angler magazine, said he didn’t bother catching squid because he hated cleaning them; now that he has a set of Squidezy tools this is no longer the case. The set comes in 3 different sizes, for different

size squid and they are made from food and dishwasher safe ABS plastic, the same material hard hats are made from. The set of three tools is designed and manufactured entirely in South Australia. You can purchase your set via the web site www.squidezy.com or checkout your nearest stockist. It works and is a great asset in the tackle box, especially when you bag out! Trust us.

Sneaky Signs of

Gluten Intolerance Gluten intolerance is one of the most fashionable catchwords used in the health industry today. You may notice that most supermarkets and restaurants will cater for the gluten free crowd to some degree. So why is this becoming so popular?

loss, weight gain and fat malabsorption alongside various nutritional deficiencies. There are however a number other not so easily recognised symptoms that can also impact on health and wellbeing. Some of the less recognised signs of gluten intolerance can include the following:

Gluten intolerance is in fact a very real issue that affects a lot of people. The condition encompasses two gastrointestinal conditions known as celiac disease and gluten sensitivity, both of which create significant digestive dysfunction and follow on health effects if not managed correctly. The furtive nature of gluten intolerance means that symptoms can go undetected for extended periods of time, however its important to realise that the damage that takes place from regular gluten consumption can become acutely apparent through digestive discomfort and pain.

1. FATIGUE Feeling tired and lethargic is extremely common for the most part, however it is not always thought to be associated with gluten intolerance. Individuals with sensitivities are naturally very prone to fatigue and tiredness, however this can be exacerbated by eating foods that contain gluten due to the increased metabolic demand to break down the gluten proteins, as well as the inflammation cascade that follows.

The most common gastrointestinal symptoms of gluten intolerance include gas and bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, weight 68

2. JOINT PAIN There is a theory that individuals with with celiac disease or gluten sensitivities are genetically predisposed to have a hypersensitised or over-excitable nervous system. LIQUID LIFE & LEISURE

This means that the sensory neurons that cause pain in muscles and joints can be overstimulated and therefore exacerbate the sensation. The most common places to experience pain are the knees, back, hips, wrists and shoulders. 3. NEUROLOGICAL PROBLEMS A number of neurological issues can be traced back to gluten intolerance. Studies indicate that peripheral neuropathy (numbness in the hands and feet) is present in approximately 50% of celiac disease patients. Additionally dementia and gait ataxia (abnormal, uncoordinated movements) are indicated with the condition. 4. POOR EMOTIONAL HEALTH Studies suggest that people with digestive issues seem to be more prone to both anxiety and depression, compared to healthy individuals. This is especially common among people who have celiac disease and is theorised to occur due to abnormal serotonin levels, alterations to
