From the Editor... Welcome LL & L Legends So we have officially made it to the last month of winter and heading for spring. Not sure about all of you but I am looking forward to Spring, being one of my favourite seasons for travel, caravanning and boating. The mornings are still cool, yet the days allow you to enjoy the sunshine, the beach and the water. What does your last month of winter bring you? This edition has so much jam packed into it to make your wintery travels fun. We have our mobile HQ and Sirromet wine tasting van that is proving very popular. The Van will be at Couran Cove island resort on the 26th of August and also back at Broadwater Tourist Park in September. We love doing these tastings, so much fun and you get to interact with so many likeminded travellers We have a great article in this month’s issue on the importance of keeping an eye on your insurance premiums. This may mean ensuring it covers you from state to state, what other inclusions or non – inclusions and also price checking. Don’t become complacent with it. We feature a traveller who did an insurance overhaul on their investments and the savings and findings you won’t believe. The lifestyle of camping, boating, travel and caravanning is something we here at LL&L are so passionate about. I truly believe that it keeps families strong, kids level headed and I love the fact of knowing that we are bringing kids up to love this lifestyle as well. We are working over the next few months on promoting the safety elements of the industry and have a great article on the benefits of learning to tow in this edition. Whether it is reversing into a very tight spot in peak season at the Caravan

Park, or sitting on the highway when something unpredictable and out of your control unfolds in front of you. It is important to have the skill set so that your instincts are the right choice in any given situation. A friend of ours many years ago were travelling and where a long way from civilisation, travelling the Country in a motorhome. The husband (the driver) experienced a medical emergency. On their own away from assistance, the wife not only had to work to assist her husband, she had to learn in that instance how to drive that motorhome to get assistance. This is not a scenario any of us want to be in, however the better prepared we are for the unexpected the more chance of having a positive outcome from a negative situation. We are partnering with some great providers in the industry to do our bit in awareness and we hope you can support our events and programs that will be available, by downloading our app for only $4.49 https://app.appcity.com.au/LiquidLifeAndLeisureApp you have access and updates of where we will be having workshops, events and updates on various safety topics. So please help us in a little way to keep promoting safety in the industry we know and love. So here is to a very safe and enjoyable August and again we couldn’t do this without you all and appreciate the shares, the likes, the reads that keep us growing and keeps us doing what we love day in day out. JWC Racing

“Every now and then, you get the opportunity to be a part of something really great in your community. For us, that is being the proud sponsors of Jack Caiulo at JWC Racing and going along for the ride”. This is Jacks’ second year of full racing at the age of 10, having raced in opens throughout WA in 2016. His drive and determination is truly inspiring, it’s no wonder his achievements are stacking up! In 2016, Jack was recognised as the most improved cadet as a part of the Tiger Kart Club. Currently for 2017, Jack is ranked 2nd for the Club Championships behind a driver who is doing the Nationals this year. Over the past few months, Jack has been involved in two big races – the Esperance Race Meet and the Coastal Classic in Bunbury. The young gun’s performance in both was spectacular, finishing in 8th and 5th position respectively. We’re delighted to see this kind of passion and are happy to do what we can to support it. We’d like to give our thanks to our friends at Performance Vehicle Warehouse for getting us on board, and that we are looking forward to supporting Jack as he tears up the tarmac in the future!

Visit JWC Racing on Facebook for the exciting specifics of each race, and to find out more about the next one!

Gap Year! FAMILY

“After 55,000kms of hard driving, I think I’ve killed Larry the Landcruiser!”

March 2017 was to be historic for our family gap year. After 15 months on the road and nearly 6 months of that in Western Australia, we were to cross the Nullarbor Plain from WA into SA. The map on our caravan wall was going to look awesome and we were going to be well on our way home to Brisbane. And then 20km short of Ceduna, SA (the eastern most side of the Nullarbor), Larry the Landcruiser’s gearbox groaned, then it whirred and after flicking it into neutral, Larry coasted to a halt and would not go any further. After 55,000kms of hard driving, I think I’ve killed Larry the Landcruiser! After suffering the indignity of having Larry and the Crusader dragged the last 20kms across the Nullabor on a tow truck, we found accommodation at the local Big 4 and set about waiting for Larry’s diagnoses. After a tense 24 hrs the preliminary findings were in; Larry’s gearbox was gone and his clutch was suspect too. Then the mechanic said “Do you tow in 5th by chance?” Now let’s put it out there right now, Larry the Landcruiser has a pretty good life – I don’t really drive Larry all that hard. For instance I seldom go above 90km/h when towing, barely over 100km/h when not towing and Larry goes to a mechanic for a checkover/service every 7,500km instead of the recommended

10,000km. All in all, he’s a pretty well looked after Landcruiser, except I do tow in 5th. Now depending on who you speak to, towing in 5th gear isn’t a big deal, but to others, telling them is like slapping them in the face. People can take gross offence to even the thought of it. To be honest I knew of a 5th gear thing, but not the whole story – I was told not to tow uphill in 5th, but that was it. I learnt that a lot of people believe you should never tow in 5th at all. Right now I really wish I knew the whole story because we’d be considerably better off. The final assessment on Larry’s health came on Monday, 4 days after we limped into Ceduna. The gearbox needed to be taken out and apart to properly assess the damage. That day we got some bad news, then some good news and then some more bad news. The bad news was that the gearbox was shot and needed to be replaced, however the clutch appeared OK. The mechanic said “we can get you all fixed up and on your way for only $4,500.” Yay! Only $4,500! The 5th Gear Thing Explained: In laymans terms, which is all I’ve got because I am, well a layman, the 5th gear or overdrive gearing in most cars is pretty flimsy, whereas 4th gear is nice and strong. I could go into specifics (as I know it), but I’m

likely to confuse some and discredit myself – basically put, overdrive gears aren’t as strong as 4th and below and don’t like to be stressed. If you stress them too much, they’ll break. And it’s not if they break, it’s when. Towing a 6×4 box trailer is OK, as is a tinnie or even a small camper trailer, however towing a 3.5t caravan is not. And doing this day in and day out for 450 odd days and 55,000kms is a recipe for disaster. So there you have it, while it’s not 100% conclusive I did it, I think there is enough evidence to support a conviction. I’m going to plead this one out and hope the judge, aka the financial controller, aka the little woman, aka the love of my life, Yas, will forgive me. If it’s any consolation I feel guilty, really guilty and Yas doesn’t hold any grudges. She also encouraged me to write this article to help other travellers avoid the innocent mistake. After having Larry in our lives so much of the past 15 months, there is a hole where he used to be. Suddenly there are more 100 series Landcruisers on the road than ever before, and they’re all moving about freely, unlike Larry. Some are even towing caravans! And I’m jealous as hell, but it’s nothing $4500 won’t fix right! Facebook - www.facebook.com/familygapyear Instagram - www.instagram.com/thefamilygapyear Website - familygapyear.com.au

How educated are you when it comes to towing?

Behind the scenes with LEARN When Andrew from Learn 2 Tow would be relaxing in a caravan park on his frequent trips away, he would always love watching people park and set up their gear. What he noticed was a lot of people found it challenging to reverse their trailer or caravan to the exact point they wanted, and also noticed some very unsafe unhitching, along with lots of couples giving bad directions or standing in a dangerous spot. From this he created a business that he doesn’t feel like he is going to work. “I love meeting fellow caravaners and helping them be more confident with their set up” states Andrew Its a flow on from his other businesses as a driving instructor, so he is able to give great towing defensive driving instruction through this business as well.

2 TOW

With no other similar courses on the Gold Coast, and it being a small outlay for the Caravan owner to keep everyone safe and a valuable investment to keep your van or boat safe on the road and so Learn 2 Tow began. For the person who has always driven smaller city cars and then they upgrade to a big 4wd, with a 20ft van with all the extras, they may not be aware of correct weight distribution and the appropriate and safe way to drive. We offer important advice on how to load and have excellent contacts for any other towing equipment that may be needed. If your caravan is not loaded correctly or is overloaded then there is a chance your insurance will be void in the case of an accident. Andrew Says, “I love that this business gives us the opportunity to

travel doing caravaning lessons along the way. I can also do on site caravan weighing for a reasonable fee”. Andrew has found that quite often couples come for a lesson with the intention ‘to teach the wife how to tow and reverse’ but in the end both husband and wife come away with more confidence. In some cases it is now the wives job to do the reversing as she does a better job. The lesson can be structured for the beginner going through all aspects of hitching, safety and techniques, or it can be a specific lesson for just the reversing techniques. Take the option to add a 1 hour towing/driving lesson on to the courses which will give you valuable defensive driving techniques to make every trip safe. Many couples have found great benefit in this lesson.

Ningaloo Reef is such a big place too, with lots of fun things to explore, especially when you drive out on the sand dunes and slide down the dunes on a board. This is one of my (Libby) favourite things to do.

We were with our friends (The Monaghan’s) in Coral Bay and we met them on the road in Broome. They have 3 girls called Ella, Tay and Kobie.

Building Healthy Habits Is your lifestyle and habits reflecting positively on your kids? What is your daily routine? What are your hobbies? Where do you go on holidays? How do you spend your weekends? Firstly I want you to all know I am not a professional in this field, I am speaking purely from the heart and only my experience. What we are exposed to as kids is definitely something that stays with us for a lifetime and can define us; it can make us who we are. I grew up in a family of Race cars, dirt, beach, camping, and exploring Australia during school holidays. While not away racing or at the beach, we were at home doing school work, while Mum and Dad ran their own business, which they worked hard for. They taxied us to and from school,

afternoon sport trainings, and Saturday games. We would go see grandparents, cousins, uncles and aunties. There was so much balance, love, kindness that looking back it surely was exhausting on my parents but they did all this without complaints, without any negativity and at 40 years of age I still have not heard my parents fight, yes sure putting up a tent or setting up camp I have heard frustrations but nothing out of line. This I think is parenting perfection. Through repetition style holidays, my brothers and I have also found the love for racing and camping. We have learnt how to drive on the beach, we have learnt how to tow, how to set up camp, how to drive boats, how to water-ski, how to light up a camp site brighter than a

football field, to run fridges, to start a generator, to set up a tent, to fish, to scale, to fillet, and the list goes on. I don’t feel this is something as easy to learn later in life, I feel it is something you need to learn on a daily and gradual basis and over the years like schooling becomes just part of your make up. The way we respond, the way we react to problems out of our hands are also defining – we had many a problems in our adventures and spent many an hour, hours stopped on the side of the road waiting for parts with all the trips we did it was bound to happen more than once and again I don’t’ recall these as bad things, they were just part of the experience and I look back on these as great memories. My kids now love camping, they

love going to watch family race, both are in the blood and I really believe that they are also better people for these experiences, relationships and hobbies. I have no doubt that 40 years of racing my parents have done, the 30 + years camping together and still doing so and a business that we have all worked in and grown has kept healthy habits in our world and allowed us as parents to keep on offering great opportunity, lifestyle, experiences and memories. Take the time to be mindful of what your habits are to ensure you are a good role model to your kids, we only have one shot at it. Live your life for them and they will live theirs for you.

WELCOME TO THE HOTTEST GOLD COAST ADVENTURE DESTINATION! Game Over is Gold Coasts biggest indoor adventure destination and we had the opportunity to spend a day at this place over the recent Qld School Holidays. Now if you are staying on the Gold Coast with or even without kids, this place is worth a visit. With rock climbing – clip n climb walls good for kids and adults, you get to test your skill set and for those that have a competitive nature you can race your partner or friends for time. We spent most of our time on the GoKarts, coming from a racing family it was just in my nature to spend most of my time on this and loved every bit of it. The karts you start on standard karts which are a lot of fun and anyone with times 27.99 and faster can upgrade their kart to the Super Karts,

so clearly this was our mission and the mission was successful. These karts are very similar just with gears and a boost function which gives you the opportunity to be a bit quicker around the track. We took the kids who also loved the karts, clip n climb, the meat hook zip coaster which follows the kart track around while suspended from the ceiling. This place is really well set up, well managed and the staff amazing. When you travel a lot and you spend a lot of time seeing landscape, sunrises, sunsets, making your own fun, it was really fun to have the family engage in some different experiences. With Dreamworld and Movieworld within the same vicinity make the time to add this to your schedule as well, great

family day out.

My mum is my hero

Why:

Mummy runs every single day, she is my hero because she is very positive, she exercises every single day and mummy works hard too. Mummy is confident and it makes me believe that I can do anything I believe I can do.

About me

What are your personal strengths? I am very determined and persistent and it’s sometimes hard to stay calm when things don’t go the way I think they are meant to go. Mummy teaches me to understand that things can’t always be perfect, even though I would like them to be. I love to learn and enjoy reading, it is my passion and I read all the time. I have really neat handwriting too! Something we don’t know about you? My love language is ‘Physical Touch’ and I especially love huggles, which means a hug and a cuddle altogether. When I’m feeling overwhelmed, huggles make everything good again. Tell us about a day in your life: I get up and eat breakfast, then try to remember to brush my teeth. I always brush my hair and then I prepare my pencils and books to start school. Then I do school, which is homeschool and Daddy is our teacher. After home-school, we usually do some code or something on our iPads. I like doing ‘Hour of Code’, and we also need to do Mathletics. We have morning tea and lunch too, and we then go out exploring the town or city we are in. I always take my book with me to read when we go out, and I sometimes get distracted doing home-school by reading! Once we are back from exploring, I play with new friends. If we don’t go out, then we play with friends for longer. We have dinner together, then play board games or sometimes watch a movie together. We go to bed and I usually read some more in bed, sometimes mummy finds me in bed really late still reading!

Manage your business remotely

PART 2 Following on from our last issue, we continue to our article on our tips and tools designed to help your business when magazine a team remotely... 3) SOFTWARE Adopting a business-wide project management tool is a must. Making sure every staff member is trained up on that tool is also vital to success. *Hint: Systemise a training procedure so all staff take the same approach to the system’s functions. That Project Management software may be a Free tool such as Google Sheets and Wunderlist, or a paid solution such as Asana, Trello, Daylite or Scoro.Google Drive and Dropbox is a great way to share documents and files “in the cloud” so every staff member can access them. Whilst it was traditionally built to be a backup only solution, Google Drive is quickly replacing traditional in-office servers. It is important however, if your team is using Google Drive or Dropbox as their main file-server, to take regular backups and ensure this backup regime is a system in itself.

4) EMAIL Vs INSTANT MESSAGES Vs PROJECT MANAGEMENT CONVERSATIONS Continually manage remote teams within your project management system. Using your time tracking and project management applications, you should be able to see at a glance the activity on your various projects. At the end (or beginning) of each day, briefly review what your team accomplished. Keeping your project related conversations within your project management software allows teams to have an at-a-glance view of historical conversations related to that project, without wasting time sifting through emails. This also avoids the “Inbox Stress” we all suffer from when we see the “unread” email counter tick upwards every 5 to 10 minutes. (although achieving “Inbox Nirvana” makes most of us un-easy too). Only use Instant Messages such as iMessage, Slack and Google Hangout for quick, general questions. NOT if you’re wanting your teamto actually go away and do something as a task which is vital to a particular project. Other Team Members may also need to be aware of this. Follow-up and Communicate within

your project management system: Rather than spending hours in status or project meetings each week, why not coordinate communication with your team on an ongoing basis right from your project management application? Spend no more than 15 minutes a day moving the project forward by answering questions and responding to status updates within the system. Using your Project Management tool rather than email, phone or in person meetings not only saves you time, but it allows your employees to store and track discussions directly in the system to access later. CONCLUSION Remote work is not and will not be for everyone, and not for 100% of industries. But in the growing number of industries that remote work is a viable way of doing business, there are some significant benefits for both employees and employers. It is up to you to take advantage of these benefits.

HEX PEGS After years of struggling with hammering in and pulling out normal pegs and watching others do the same, I couldn’t help but think that there has to be a better way. This led to the idea of a power tool doing the work instead of someone using a hammer or peg remover. CALL US:

So a little bit about The Crafty Goose‌ Image Courtesy of Crafty Goose

Jac and I are a husband and wife team, who spent the better part of 2016 renovating a 1970’s Viscount Ambassador Alumvan into a mobile craft beer and espresso bar. The idea stems from our love of Australian craft beer and our appreciation of speciality roasted coffee, all housed in a quality renovated, unique setting. The Sunshine Coast has become a mecca for great coffee and micro-breweries and we like nothing better than showcasing what our local community has to offer. We were married on North Stradbroke Island in March 2016 and would have loved nothing more than to be able to hire a mobile bar, like The Crafty Goose, to serve our beverages from tap. A vintage caravan bar would have been the perfect element to tie together our outdoor garden marquee/beach setting.

So we are aiming for Straddle to be a big focus for us into the future. The Crafty Goose is able to serve 3 beverages on tap at anyone time and also houses a 2 group Carimali Italian coffee machine. We differ from other suppliers, as we are able to serve beer/wine on tap, as well as bottle beverages if required and we can also finish up our service for your event with barista made coffee. And you will not meet a more laid back, professional, friendly couple to keep your guests well hydrated. All of our staff are RSA and Barista trained. We love the great outdoors, 4w driving, fishing and adventuring and are more than happy to travel the country with the van. We have a ARB roof top tent on our Nissa Patrol so we are able to service events further afield from the Sunshine Coast and still get a good

nights sleep! Jac has completed all of the renovations on the van, from laying the flooring to building the cabinetry and crafting the beautiful bar top and drop down side bar from recycled timber. Where possible we sourced recycled timber from local yards, to keep the vintage era and theme. As the renovation progressed we found a nautical theme developing inside the van and our wallpaper just tied in our subtropical lifestyle here on the Sunny Coast. The Crafty Goose is available for beverage service hire for corporate functions, weddings, engagement parties, garden and birthday parties, health retreats, festivals and can even be used as a quirky backdrop for photo shoots.
