LIQUID LIFE & LEISURE

From the Editor...

Welcome Liquid Life & Leisure Legends

This month I have been putting a lot of energy into whether opportunity is handed to us or if it is a result of hard work and steering something to what then turns into an opportunity and what sometimes people refer to as “you’re so lucky”. I first recall this term being spoken off after I had my daughter (11 years ago now), from the outside people seeing me bounce back to shape quickly. “You are so lucky “you dropped your baby weight so quickly and easily. I was ready to give it to the next person that said this, yet I just let it slide. Are people quick to assume that everything in life is brought to one by luck? Losing my baby weight had nothing to do with being lucky, it was being up at 4.30am running with a baby in a pram day in day out, twice a day at times, it was walking to get the groceries and carrying or should I say struggling back with them. It was being conscious of what I was putting in my mouth that got me there, not luck. I believe this goes to show in business too. I go to my daughter’s assembly and there have been people comment that I am lucky that I do what I do to allow me to do this, is this luck? Or has it been sheer hard work to work myself to a position to do it. I am not sure it is luck to be up at 3am to do the work that needs to be done so it enables me to get to the assembly, is it luck having to juggle cash flow day in day out, and chase money before you can have a wage, to have to get the bas done and work in general while on holidays and never completely switch off, but for those that want to believe it is luck than I let them believe it. Don’t get me wrong I absolutely consider myself lucky, I have good health, I was born with the sheer guts to make the life I have and to have the strength and support to push through the tough days and the ability to breathe and enjoy the good, but again I ask this, is this luck? Or was this the hard work and determination injected and instilled into me by my parents and again nothing to do with luck? Am I lucky to have such an amazing daughter? Or is this again a product of good family, good parenting, good morals and values and

being brought up in a community where we have made good choices, I don’t think for a minute they have been lucky choices. I believe luck is winning the lotto, I believe luck is winning the meat tray at the local RSL on a Sunday afternoon. I don’t believe working towards goals, bringing up your kids, weight loss or business has anything to do with luck. So this month I want you to remind yourself you are not where you are because of luck, you are where you are because of your hard work, your vision , your guts and your push to succeed. Your kids are who they are because of the choices you have made for them. If there are things you want to change then you have the means to do so, if not just enjoy what you are doing and don’t have the need to fix something that is not broken. Business and life is tough it doesn’t matter who you are. It can be less tough if you simplify what is important and give yourself credit for what you have done and not always think it is because of luck. Back yourself and have trust in what you are doing. This edition, we have articles from people doing just that in their business, they are working towards doing what they love and in turn supplying you with great products and support. They all would have sacrificed at some point and some may still be doing so to do what they love, one thing though is for sure, they didn’t wake up one morning have it dished up with their coffee on their side table as they lay in bed. They made a conscious decision to put things on the line and live the life they choose. Is this luck I ask? Big shout out and congrats to all our businesses, contributors and partners in this edition and to all of our readers. We absolutely love putting our magazine together every month and we couldn’t do it without you all. For you guys yes we are lucky, or should I say appreciative. Living & Loving Life,

Hayles

One Van. Two new gadgets to test.

Here is our verdict... 08

LIQUID LIFE & LEISURE

Our good friends at Liquid Life and Leisure and the boaties APP have sent us a few ripper products to road test. Over the past few months we have been using the Milo 24 solar blanket charger and the MP32000 Mobile Power Bank. These 2 products are an ideal addition to a big trip around OZ. To be able to charge all our devices via this compact solar blanket and power bank is unreal and so handy for all the free camps and self sufficient sites we stay at. We use these products all the time now, they are just so convenient. We slot the powerbank in the backpack on all our treks and beach days so we always have power to recharge our cameras and phones.

LIQUID LIFE & LEISURE

09

Our Experience. Once the Mobile power bank is charged via the 240volt adaptor or the solar blanket we can then power all our devices and charge batteries over night or on rainy days. It has a 34200mAh capacity which provides countless recharges of multiple devices at one time. Its amazing! To charge your laptop with the Milo24 Solar Charger or the power bank, all you need to do is grab the correct lead and plugs out of the Mobile Power Bank box.

A handy feature on the Mobile power bank is that you can change the power output settings for charging anything DC like a laptop, camcorder etc. The Milo24 is a very small light weight portable solar charger that will allow you to charge all your small handheld devices and a laptop at the same time. It folds up into a tidy little package thats easy enough to throw in your beach bag or backpack. To give it a proper test, We charged our iPhone 6 from dead flat to full battery and the charge time with the Milo in full sun was 40 minutes.

The Milo24 and

Mobile Power Bank are quality products and have become a valuable addition to the tech gear for our ‘Trip In A Van’ adventures.

5 WAYS TO GET

FINANCIALLY READY

AND LIVING THE LIFE YOU WANT The Australian dream comes in many shapes and sizes, but no matter what your version of that dream is it nearly always comes back to one thing, seeing Australia.

Are you already planning for this experience? Or are you hoping you just win the lotto and it will just happen?

Don’t put your lifetime goals to chance, get working and planning and you will see they are so achievable and you might possibly be closer to living your dream than you thought....

3 initial factors to consider...

1.

Consolidating small debts and credit cards into one payment not only frees up your cash, but makes handling your finances on the road a lot more manageable and will allow you to save on interest, which means more time on the road.

2.

Dealers are overstocked at the moment and with current low rates this is a great time to upgrade or enter into the Leisure Life. Whether this is a life on the water or on the road, now is a great time to get started and to buy. If it is a little too soon, still keep an eye on the market and what is available so when you are ready you are entering the market educated and ready to buy.

3.

Whether retirement is on the horizon for you or not, it is never too early to put a plan in place so you can live the life you want after the working years have passed. It is much easier to put the funding in place now than it is once you are out of the workforce or with a reduced income stream.

The importance of TALKING to someone in this field is vital as they can bring options to the table you never thought were available...

Whether this is by air, by boat, by caravan, motorhome or camping your way around this great country it is one way or another on our bucket list.

Funding your lifestyle now so you can be financially stable living the best years of your life in retirement is the smart way, and you may think you don’t have the extra funds to do this, but unless you discuss this with the experts you will never know. Talking and planning with experts won’t only get you on the right track, but will get you excited about your future and well prepped so when the day comes you are nowhere to be seen... As you can see we can all have ideas of how we think or hope we can fund this lifestyle and our future, however there are always factors we have not considered or factors we have not considered enough. The importance of talking to someone in this field is recommended as they can bring options to the table you never thought were available or worth considering.

4.

Is the towing vehicle getting a bit tired or overworked? Have you considered upgrading your tow vehicle or purchasing a tow vehicle now ready for the next purchase that being the boat or caravan? Having to purchase both at the same time may not be financially the best option, so if you are planning this lifestyle maybe upgrading the car first is a worthwhile step.

Put your future on the radar and discuss your dreams and requirements with Westcorp Capital, with so many years of experience they are sure to get you one step closer.

5.

Consider your term options, as there are loans up to 7 years which allow a more reduced payment, and although this may not be suitable or viable for some situations and definitely works for some. This set up allows for more cash and fun on the road and to lengthen your trips.

QUEENSLAND your ultimate itinerary /thegreatescapeaustralia

Where we went ... April ... Fraser Island

We spent a week on Fraser Island and it was amazing. Everything we expected and more. We camped half at Central station in the middle of the island, and half bush camping on the beach, and really enjoying the beach driving, the 4wd tracks, and the beautiful lakes. Only saw 1 dingo though! For people who don’t have a 4wd Inskip Point, where the barge leaves for Fraser, is also a beautiful spot to visit with great camping right on the beach.

May ... Horizons Kangaroo Sanctuary (Agnes Waters & 1770) This is a low cost camp on private property run by people who have a kangaroo sanctuary. Not only is it a great campsite but you get visited by the roos every evening and they are very friendly. You can also do a tour of their nursery even if you are not staying there.

May ... Cape Hillsborough National Park This was a really hidden gem. Most people go there to watch the wallabies on the beach at sunrise, and that was fantastic. But the camping was also great and the bush walks had amazing wildlife, tons of butterflies, and beautiful views.

June ... Etty Bay Etty Bay is a beautiful little beach

just south of Innisfail that has a couple of resident Cassowaries that you are almost guaranteed to spot, plus a caravan park and kiosk right on the beach. Definitely worth staying for a few nights and spotting some of these beautiful birds.

July ... Savannah Way The Savannah Way runs from Cairns all the way to Broome, but we only went as far as Normanton. This section of highway 1 goes down to a single potholed road in some points and has a bunch of great free camps along the way so you can really take your time.

August ... Cape York Cape York was amazing. We traveled with some friends who flew in to visit and hired a car, so we only had limited time, but we managed to spend 3 weeks traveling the Cape and it was fantastic. We did about 75% of the Tele Track with our camper trailer (we didn’t want to push our luck) and one of our favourite free camps was Sams Creek on the Tele Track. But we loved the 4wding, the beautiful beaches, the wildlife and the stunning swimming. We also expected it to be super busy but it really wasn’t too bad.

November ... CentralQLD/ Outback QLD Outback QLD is something that a lot of people miss on their ‘lap’ which is a real shame because it’s amazing. We particularly enjoyed Lawn Hill Gorge, Corella Dam free camp, Mark Kathleen Ghost Town, and the Winton/ Longreach region.

The Essentials ... ...

Duration: 366 days Caravan parks: 161 nights Free: 174 nights (66 with family/ friends & 44 in staff accommodation). National parks/low cost camps: 60 nights B&B: 1 night (special occasion) Total accommodation cost: $4170 ($79/wk)

So that’s $402/week or $57/day for essentials only. But of course, it’s not that simple. We want to have some fun too, and unfortunately things can go wrong sometimes as well (or in the case of our car things can go wrong a lot!).

...

So here is EVERYTHING ELSE .. Maintenance & Improvements: $11,134 ($214/wk).

Note: My phone died recently and none of the fuel app data was backed up so it’s estimates on kms & fuel consumption.

This is the big one. Some of our car expenses include: a new turbo, a new exhaust, 2 new windscreens, 2 new batteries, a few services & 4 new tyres. Plus we’ve added a few things, and made some modifications to our whole set up along the way. For example: a portaloo + chemicals, shower tent, 12v shower, a stretcher bed for the kid, a second solar panel, and 3 new fans (the fan saga is ongoing. We currently own 4. But that’s another story). And let’s not forget the gas refills and all the visits to Bunnings/Bursons/ Supercheap Auto/Repco etc.

Groceries: $7663 ($146/wk).

Health insurance & health expenses: $6579 ($124/wk).

...

Approx. 28,000 kms + a few more driving other peoples cars when we flew home to Melbourne for a visit. 3862 litres of fuel in the Triton (roughly 16L/100km). Total fuel cost: $4868 ($93/wk

... ...

We ain’t living off noodles.

Phones: $1949 ($37/wk). This includes 2 mobile phone plans on Telstra & Boost and 1 Sat phone which is $15/month.

...

Car/trailer insurance/rego + ambulance cover + breakdown cover: $2457 ($47/wk). Ambulance victoria cover is $89/yr and RACV total care is $225/yr. Both essentials as far as I’m concerned.

...

The other big one. Our private health insurance costs $256.50/month. Do we need it? We debate this constantly and always decide yes, so we still have it. Plus in the year we have been away we have had 2 surgeries in the private system which both had out of pocket expenses. But both of these surgeries would have required long waits in the public system and I’m not sure how that would have fitted into our travels. Plus of course there is your usual doctors visits and medication expenses. While living on the road is undoubtedly good for your health it doesn’t make you invincible unfortunately.

Alcohol: $1220 ($23/wk). Surprisingly low (thanks Geoff Beveridge for all the free wine!). Entertainment: $1271 ($24/wk). This includes tourist things + occasional daycare days to keep the kid happy when we’re stopped in one place for work. Eating out: $2471 ($47/wk). Maccas, takeaway coffees, pub meals, & rather a lot of Bunnings sausages. Presents home: $2456 ($48/wk). People don’t stop having babies or birthdays or getting married just because you’re away. And Santa still has to find you. God this one adds up though. Laundry: $243 ($5/week). Other: $4213 ($80/wk). This includes 2 lots of return flights to Melbourne, 2 new phones (bad luck in that area too!), sunglasses, clothes, replacement underwear after it got stolen off the line... all the other random uncategorized stuff. Which also adds up real quick. Plus Renee has some expenses related to work nursing) like union fees & professional development/courses.

...

Final Total:

All up we’re looking at about $1000/wk. Which is more than we’d hoped but because we work along the way it’s been manageable. And on that note.. Places worked: Warwick, Innisfail, Atherton, Julia Creek & Melbourne. Total experience: priceless. Total regrets: not a single one. /thegreatescapeaustralia

The Best

Reception...

Arrive at your destination, van is set up, you crack a cold beer and pull out the manual satellite dish. There are times you turn up and this set up is done inside 30 minutes. But sometimes for no reason you can understand the setup can take 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours and even 5 hours - still with no luck. Your partner also disappears to let you mumble under your breath to yourself. It’s just you, and the manual satellite dish. Well, for all those about to invest into a Caravan, take it from us an investment into an automatic sat dish needs to be part of your initial caravan investment. You spend upwards of $30,000 on a caravan, budget from the start on one of these. If you are already travelling and you have a manual set up – do yourself and your sanity a favour and get an automatic set up.

20

Automatically

We have recently transitioned to a Bluestar Automatic Satellite dish from a manual set up and to be able to get television reception Australia wide and in remote areas and within minutes from turning up has added incredibly to our experience and travels. I get it, that tv should not be emphasised too much when travelling - you should be out experiencing the outdoors, however it is nice to return end of the day and watch the news, or your favourite shows. It is what completes the entire experience of being away. I know for sure that since making our investment into one of these we will never go back to a manual, antenna set up again. We turn up, press the power button and it is as simple as the automatic satellite dish lifting and locates the correct satellite for Foxtel, Austar and VAST sat tv. LIQUID LIFE & LEISURE

The investment is truly worthwhile. We looked into various options available and you cannot go past the VANSAT range. We have estimated that we will get back at least 25 half-days a year from this investment, the mood of our campsite on arrival is priceless and never have a risk of nothing to do on a rainy day when you have played every board game, every card game and read all your books available in your van and just want some quiet tv time. I must admit after sun has set nothing beats a hot shower, bed and an episode of your favourite show. The experts do say everything in moderation, so there is a time and place for everything and TV in your van is one of them. The Charity Family Owners of New Age “Big Red”

Custom boards designed, shaped and glassed here in Australia Foam dust covers the floor of the shaping bay, in the centre of the room lies a half shaped blank neatly nestled in the shaping stands with fluro lights set up at just the right level to cast a shadow across the blank to show how the curves and flow of the board are magically appearing. A tall figure moves back and forward, mowing foam with all manner of different tools and sanding equipment, he himself covered from head to toe in foam dust. He spots me, stops work, removes his mask and flashes a huge smile. “Welcome to my office” Mick says shaking my hand warmly. Mick Slattery is the founder and head shaper/designer of Surefire Boards,

a company who prides itself on putting the best boards under the feet of everyone from beginners to World Champions in both surfboards and Stand up paddle boards. Just like surfboards have gone through many evolutions to be where they are today, similarly SUP’s have come a long way in the last few years, starting out as large heavy watercrafts to now being super light & responsive surf models and 14ft race and downwind boards. Mick’s passion for surfing and paddle boarding is obvious as he discusses designing and shaping: “We take pride in every board we make, in both our custom and production models; shaping custom boards that are ridden by some of our country’s best riders gives us the ability to make small

adjustments to our designs, outlines, rockers and bottom contours on the fly which allows us to stay at the forefront of the industry. Before we make any new board though, I still like to draw the outline on a block of foam (blank) to make sure it has the correct flow, to me this is where I really get the outline dialled in, and can tweak the nose/ tail measurements to suit. The eye still knows best.” “We are stoked to be making boards that are accessible and easy for anyone, no matter the age or skill level, we back this up with first rate customer service and experiences. I like to think that we are changing people’s lives for the better, one board at a time.” Check out Surefire Boards website for their range of boards, accessories, videos & how to’s at www.surefireboards.com

The first 100% aluminum wakeboat

Introducing the new Pavati AL-24, the most innovative, powerful and durable wake boat available. Pavati wake boats are built from raw, natural aluminum. That means they’ll never break down, shatter rot, rust, or emit harmful fumes. Pavati boats are built to last forever. 24 feet of pure excitement, “Built Ford Tough™” with Indmar Ford Raptor engines ( GM and diesel also available) to provide the thrust and on-demand torque every wake and surf enthusiast craves.

Every aspect has been carefully planned and engineered using the most advanced manufacturing software available, and with extensive testing, we know what kind of performance and waves to expect from the boat before it ever reaches the production floor. The AL-24 is fully welded, which means no tack welds, rivets, glue seeds, or screws holding the frame together. With our distinct pickle tri-tip bow design, you get the most space possible out of your boat from the patented AL-24 hull. That means more people, storage space and ballast. Just like fiberglass, plastic becomes brittle and breaks over time. That’s why we don’t use plastic hardware. All accessories are aluminum and stainless, welded and fully integrated into the boat, including the dashboard, meaning it will never break, crack, or need replacing. Indestructible, outstanding performances, innovative technology – the Pavati AL-24, pure elements never die. www.pavati.com.au

"Eating salads, cooking a bbq and eating outside is all too easy in the warmer months, however as the nights start to get darker earlier and the chill starts to hit the air, we all seem to want to disappear inside the house or caravan and go into hibernation mode." So you have been cooking outside for some time now, considering that summer and the hotter nights have been upon us for some 3 months now. Eating salads, cooking a bbq and eating outside is all too easy in the warmer months, however as the nights start to get darker earlier and the chill starts to hit the air, we all seem to want to disappear inside the house or caravan and go into hibernation mode. I don’t know for you but for us once the cooler nights set in we to were guilty of hitting the high road for the comfort of indoors, the kitchen, the stews on a bed of mash potato, what about the roast dinners with all those roast veggies cooked in a load of oil in the frypan, there is a reason why we all tend to put some kilos on during the time of April/May to September and it all has to do with our cooking and being less active.

1. SWAP YOUR STEWS FOR LEAN CUTS OF MEAT 2. EAT EARLIER TO STILL ENJOY THE SUNSETS AND COOKING OUTSIDE 3. RUG UP AND GO OUTSIDE TO COOK INSTEAD OF COOKING INSIDE 4. GRILL YOUR VEGGIES INSTEAD OF A PAN FULL OF OIL 5. SWAP YOUR BURGERS ON THE BBQ FOR OPEN GRILL SO YOU ONLY CONSUME ONE SLICE OF BREAD AND LOAD IT WITH SALAD

This autumn / winter seasons we are changing it up, as this does not need to be the way and grilling and cooking outdoors is our new way.

If you are not decked out for outdoor cooking I suggest you check out the range of Weber BBQ, the Baby Q is perfect for us as we are in the Caravan and its size is perfect for travelling and it cooks up everything we throw at it.

We have mixed it up and we are going to brave the colder weather to have a better waist line and not have to spend spring this year shedding our winter coat. How are we doing this we hear you ask?

Coastline Barbeques and Heating on the Gold Coast can get you decked out with the best cooking style for you and if you are not on the coast check out Coastline Barbeques - www.coastlinebbq.com.au

Well here are our tips to stay in front of those extra kilos and start summer with a leaner version of yourself, avoid the winter blues and live a happier cold season and for us this will be all because of our Baby Q Weber and our new mindset.

WHY DON’T YOU TRY THIS TOO!

Australia has a history of bathing in hot springs stretching back over the many thousands of years when the Aboriginal tribes roamed the Continent. Refer “The History of Helidon Spa”. In Australia hot springs can be found in every State and the Northern Territory. From the south of Australia in Tasmania at Hastings Caves and Thermal Springs to Innot Hot Springs in Far North Queensland. Is

Gluten Free For Me?

Over recent years there has been an exponential increase in the amount of people adapting to a gluten free diet. You might be familiar with the terms “gluten intolerance” and “celiac disease”, which are both conditions that are proving to be an underlying cause for many contemporary health issues and in particular digestive discomfort. With this in mind, the current vogue of gluten-free dieting is no doubt happening for a reason, most people are finding that they simply feel better without it. The reason for this will differ from person to person, however for individuals that do react to gluten there are in fact many inflammatory responses that occur when consuming gluten-containing foods. So firstly, what is gluten? Gluten is a protein found in grains and is particularly prevalent in wheat, rye, barley, and oats. Its sticky nature is the reason that it is commonly used as a binder and/or filler in many processed foods such as breads, 38

pasta, cakes and sweets. Reactions to this protein can appear quite acutely after eating meals and can unfortunately last for extended periods of time. It is therefore important to consider what foods in your house contain gluten, even if it is something as seemingly inoffensive as vegemite on toast! And why is it a potential problem? When we eat gluten-containing foods such as the ones mentioned above (among many others), the intestines break down the gluten protein into smaller amino acids to continue being digested and absorbed. For people who do not react to gluten, this should be a straightforward and relatively easy process, however for those suffering from gluten intolerance and celiac disease, this can be extremely difficult and can create a lot of damage to the intestinal walls, which greatly impairs the digestive process. Symptoms of gluten intolerance may actually be silent and go undetected for rather extended periods of time, however the damage that occurs from regular gluten consumption LIQUID LIFE & LEISURE

can become acutely apparent. This can be recognised through digestive dysfunction including gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, weight loss, weight gain and fat malabsorption alongside various nutritional deficiencies including low Iron, Vitamin B and Vitamin D. For those with coeliac disease, the inflammatory effects are greatly exaggerated and can have severe health ramifications as the condition is actually an autoimmune disease that has capacity to compromise other body organs and systems. Suspect that your gluten intolerant? The most simple way to determine if you have an issue with gluten is to eliminate it from your diet for a period of at least three to six weeks, then reintroduce it. If you feel significantly better during the elimination period and then worse upon reintroduction, then gluten intolerance may be a likely reason for your discomfort.

Things to take notice of during the elimination period consist of the following: 1. A happier tummy by keeping your “business regular. 2. Improved energy levels, which is indicative of improved nutrient absorption. 3. Weight regulation. This can occur through decreasing inflammatory responses and allowing for more efficient metabolism and absorption of essential vitamins and minerals. 4. Reduced flatulence!!!! 5. Reduced bloating, gas and inflammation! 6. Improved concentration. When your digestive system is clear and on track, your mind follows suit.

and you continue to notice a pattern of digestive discomfort when consuming gluten containing foods, it may be a good choice to remove it from your diet regardless. Building Blocks of Health!

HEY TRAVELLER OF THE LAND, OR SAILOR OF THE SEA’S… Have you ever heard the saying “You are what you eat”? I am certain that you have and trust that as you devour those tasty fries coated with melted cheese and bacon, that this theory doesn’t even enter your consciousness! Now I’m not going to deny that at times we are driven by our desire to indulge in cakes, pies, pizza etc, I mean I cannot blame you for as we drool at the images that come up on our Facebook feeds, whilst sitting at bus stops, train stations, watching TV, reading magazines… let’s face it – we are overloaded with food porn! However, eating like this every day as we are well aware will cause our body’s to rebel and I don’t need to remind you that those much loved denims will not fit the same if you continue to eat this way! Why this happens is that this food is mostly full of Frankenfoods – foods that have been overly processed, loaded with additives, colours and preservatives, which ultimately cause havoc as our body can not recognise these foods as affectively as wholefoods. Our bodies defence mechanisms try’s so hard to create a balanced environment with our pH level’s as this type of diet creates an acidic environment causing inflammation! Our bodies function best when we create or maintain an alkaline environment. So I’m guessing at this point you’re sitting there wondering if your body is acid or alkaline? There are various test for this so this is just a rough guide. Are you currently experiencing any of the following: · Joint pain, aching muscles, lactic acid build up?

· Premature aging · Low energy and chronic fatigue · Constantly getting coughs, colds, flu · Digestive issues · Weight gain, diabetes, obesity Plus many more symptoms that may relate back to an acidic body. Don’t feel guilty… that’s not why I am writing this… The objective is that there is hope! And that hope is fruit and vegetables! Wow… I know it’s amazing that real food grown from the earth is the answer to all our illnesses! There are many different opinions on how many serves a day you should have to ‘prevent’ dis-ease, however the average adult is not even eating that minimum amount. Have you ever considered that the food that you eat has a resemblance to various parts of the body? When we are conscious of nature’s pharmacy, we can understand the rationale behind Hippocrates quote: “Let food be thy medicine, and let medicine be thy food”… Examples of this are: 1) Grapefruit – Breast. 2) Walnut – Brain. 3) Carrot – Eye. 4) Celery – Bone. 5) Tomato – Heart. 6) Mushroom – Ear / Male reproductive organs 7) Avocado – Uterus. 8) Ginger – Stomach.

9) Grapes – Blood Cells 10) Kidney Beans – Kidney’s 11) Sweet Potatoes – Pancreas 12) Citrus Fruits – Mammary Glands Imagine eating a rainbow everyday of fruits and vegetables! It would be impossible for your body to not feel amazing, to feel fantastic and to be energised! Now would I be right in saying that you think it’s impossible to consume that many fruit and vegetables in any one sitting? Especially if you are on the road traveling, or you’re boating or camping, it makes it almost impossible to keep fruit and vegetables fresh! But there is a solution and I’d love to share that with you! If you are interested in a wholefood that supplies 27 fruit and vegetables and free children’s nutrition (I know you’ve got fussy ones that don’t eat their fruit and veg), then let me show you how! Follow the link and we will get in touch…

The magic pill . .

swallow!

is hard to

It’s human nature to be after the quick fix, or the easy way out.

My answer is always the same and every time the person nods their head (because they have heard me say it before) but maybe they thought there was a different answer this time? I’m not special, I don’t have magical pills, or shakes or dust you can sprinkle over your fat or life to make it better – I wish I did and anyone that says they do is a liar! But the hard truth of the matter is YOU have to do the work to get the results. On a really basic level the simple secret to losing weight is that you have to be burn more calories than you are consuming. Wah-lah! Magic! So with a combination of healthy and nutritious meals and exercise, that is the recipe to success. Ever heard the saying you can’t out exercise a bad diet, its true! Weight loss is 80% nutrition and 20% fitness.

However when it comes to your health there is no quick fix or easy way out and no one wants to hear that. Countless times I have people ask me what I do to stay fit and healthy, as if I’ve stumbled across this magical way of losing weight, growing muscle or getting abs. The answer is pretty simple and once you get the hang of it, it’s quite easy but it’s also absolute hard work.

If you’re happy where you’re at and you exercise to enjoy those foods in life, then happy days. It balances out, but if you are looking to budge some kilo’s you have to take a stricter approach to training and the foods you are consuming. You can’t leave the gym and think I’ve worked out so it will be fine if I stop off at KFC for dinner on the way home. This won’t get you anywhere and no matter how hard your trainer

pushes you, you are fighting a battle you probably won’t win and because you won’t see results you’ll probably give up and go back to what you were doing that got you in this position in the first place. So here’s my wrap up: 1. All diets work – if YOU stick to them 2. All fitness options work if YOU train hard So find a healthy and nutritious meal plan that you know you can stick to and find some kind of fitness that you love to do at least 3 times per week and DO IT. It’s not anyone else’s fault you haven’t lost weight, you have the tools, you need to use them, or not, but the choice is yours and that’s why the magic pill is a little hard to take, it’s rough and spikey and taste yuck, but it’s the truth and the rewards are far more magical than you can imagine. We have loads of magic pills at CrossFit Meraki and we would love the opportunity to give you the tools to help you succeed and reach your health and fitness goals. For a little bit of tough love and a lot of fun and support contact us today to give it a go, I dare you!

MAKE YOUR SUNDAY COUNT!

Sunday’s on a Budget So you love the outdoors, you love getting away but you don’t want to spend all your hard earned cash every week and you don’t want to spend your entire week planning. Well lucky for you, you don’t need to. Are you guilty of over thinking things that more often than not that process ruins a good outing, weekend or adventure? Does the guy in the really big 50ft luxury boat have more fun than the family in the tinnie fishing for the day? Does the family in a large triple bunk van with all the mod cons, have more fun than the family camped next to you in a tent? Sometimes simplifying a process every now and then can bring such a great experience. I am by no means saying any of the above have less fun than the others, and nor am I saying they have more fun. What I am saying is that you don’t need the best of the best to get a way, get outside and have some fun and nor do you need to totally set up your van every trip. Keep it simple, keep it often.

Running your business

! y l e t o m re

Have you ever dreamt about having more flexibility in your career? Your working day and what is expected of you? This dream is not necessarily out of reach, and in fact in this day and age of technology and connectivity it really does give you the chance to live the life you want and is quite an easy transition with the right tools and knowledge. Running your business remotely has so many advantages, if you plan and prepare your team properly. In our business we found that four walls were restricting us, it was restricting content, opportunity and was limiting us on the destinations we could experience firsthand and restricting creativity. We found the more we worked out of the office the happier the staff were, the content was real and you could get a sense of experience from the piece and the overall vibe from our team was they were genuinely loving life and their roles. We found the following was vital for this process though and allowed us to transition smoothly.

1. Set clear goals and targets and communicate your expectations

Be sure to outline working hours and job tasks to your staff, to ensure that everyone is on the same page and stays focused.

2. Educate & Equip Give your team the education they need to work remotely and ensure you let them know you are only a phone call away. Schedule weekly, monthly quarterly face to face meetings with them to check in and keep your relationship strong, however keep your phone contact consistent with them. Not too much that they think you don’t trust them, but enough that they know you still are focused on the business and your team is important. Equip them with the programs, technology and connectivity they need to be able to carry out their workload with ease and speed. Nothing gets you down more than slow internet, no internet or the wrong programs. Spend time setting them up to be as productive as they can be.

3. Systems & Processes Have your systems and processes set up so paperwork, contracts, files and the behind the scenes business paper trail stays in line and easily managed. This keeps the flow of your “remote office” and business foundations strong and organised.

4. Trust your Team Trust your team, don’t micro-manage

them, if you have done the above steps then let them grow into their position more than they ever have by working remotely, let them see you trust them and if you have the right people in your team the reward will be great. If you micro-manage than they won’t ever reach their potential, let them show you what their made of.

5. Learn to listen and Let Go The best thing as not only a business owner, but transitioning your business to a remote business is to learn to listen to your team and learn to let go and be adaptable. Your business is where it is because of you, your hard work and your dedication but imagine if you allowed yourself to let others take the reins, could their ideas together with your business practices, your ideas and a strong business foundation grow it to the next level? Don’t be scared to try new things, don’t be scared to listen to your staff and don’t ever be scared to let go and have faith in your team and the squad you trained, nurtured, nourished and set free. People love knowing they are trusted, they love the freedom to learn and explore so why not give your business and team this chance, if remote is what you want, take the plunge.

Barefoot Smiles Life

Brown Rice Sushi

Days filled with gratitude as the sun rises over the ocean and our little home on wheels. Travelling to exotic locations, eating good food, taking photo’s and meeting likeminded people while embracing our vision of living with less.

Preparing enough sushi rolls for dinner can be time consuming so instead we put the rice, fillings and condiments on the table. We make and roll the sushi as we’re eating less time consuming, no waste and more fun.

This lifestyle has a lot of wholesome energy attached to it which in turn offers new opportunities everyday. We’re feeling good. I mean really good. When you are following your souls purpose the universe sends its gratitude. We call it the Barefoot Smiles Life – it’s mindful travel, lifestyle over luxury and inspired connections. It’s a way for us to connect with like minded souls, share stories and inspire each other. This lifestyle has us feeling more motivated and focused than ever and we have some seriously big dreams on the horizon. Life on the road in our Toyota Hi-ace campervan named Luna has been good to us but there is salt in our veins and the ocean is calling. Our next adventure is leading towards life aboard our very own sailing boat. Life in tight quarters takes a little getting used to and mastering it has been a learning curve. Our lovable Luna has provided the perfect test for us to get accustomed to this way of life. Our van kitchen consists of a miniature sink with 15L tank of water, fold down bench top, two-burner stove and a stick blender – only run when there’s enough charge in the second battery. We have another 15L of water in a tapped container which can last both of us 6 days before filling up. Enjoying optimal health while on a tight budget and with minimal space is possible. It has taken some practice but now all the hard work is done and we want to share how we do it. Through our travels and adjusting to this way of life we have developed a connection to the simple things. The things that matter. Feeling the salt on our skin, practicing yoga, rainbows at sunrise and fuelling our bodies with healthy, delicious food. Pack for your holiday and your safety So you have purchased your new van and you are ready to take your new “home away from home “on its maiden voyage. Tow car Caravan Park booked House sitter organised The list is done and all that is left is to do the groceries, pack your bag, and duck to the bottle shop for some supplies, get it all into the van and you’re off. Have you put any thought into weight distribution? Or is the plan to throw it all into the van, buckle up and get on the road. Weight distribution is a very serious topic and part of traveling and it is very important that you take this part of your holiday seriously. If you can take the time to do all the other things, take the time to distribute your packing and weight carefully to ensure safer travels and a better more stable ride. Tips to remember .. Heaviest items on the floor as close to the axles as possible Lighter items going backwards, forwards and upwards from there (i.e. the further you are away from the axles the lighter the objects should be, and also the higher you go from the floor the lighter objects should be). You should where possible store food in low cupboards closer to the floor and lighter things in the overheard cupboards. Weigh things as you put them into the van if you are unsure, including water, food tubs, clothes etc.

Don’t add heavy items like air conditioners, tool boxes, generators to the back bumper of your caravan as this can cause your trailer to sway and in serious cases jack knife or over turn. Travel where possible with water tanks full as this makes for a more stable ride as it will lower the centre of gravity. ATM = Aggregate Trailer Mass This is the easy one – it is the most your caravan can weigh, with everything in and on it, as it stands, unhitched. It is the weight that each wheel and the jockey wheel impose on the ground all added together, at the very most. GTM = Gross Trailer Mass Maximum allowable weight that can be transferred to the road surface via suspension, wheels and tyres, measured at a weighbridge. Tare Mass This is the weight your caravan will weigh from the manufacturer. These are just a guideline and a few useful tips however there is many sites you can get very valuable information from to assist with your journey. Be sure to be as prepared as you possibly can, ask as many questions as you need and most of all be sure to adhere to all your obligations that come with Caravan owners. The last thing you need is to be off the road when you want to be holidaying or worse yet not covered with insurance because you did not comply with the rules, regulations and guidelines set.

DO YOU HAVE AN

?

Accident travel Plan

WE ALL HEAD OFF ON OUR BEAUTIFUL PLANNED HOLIDAYS WITH SUCH HIGH LEVEL OF EXCITEMENT, ANTICIPATION, CAREFUL PLANNING AND NOTHING BUT THE ROAD AHEAD AND MAKING MEMORIES ON OUR RADAR. This is how it rolls out 99% of the time, but are you prepared for the unexpected. Do you have your kids prepared for the unexpected? This is the hard stuff, this is the stuff no one tends to touch on. We all show off our perfect holidays, the perfect destinations, the perfect road trips without mechanical issues, no injuries. What about if in the unlikely event that there were issues do you have your accident travel plan in place and do all the family members know it?

THINGS TO THINK OF WHEN TRAVELLING REMOTELY:-

THING TO DO IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT:-

· Do you have a first aid kit on board? · Do you have CPR training? · Do you have plenty of drinking water on board? · Do your kids know how to call for help and what to do in the event you are unable to assist them after an accident? · Do you know how to drive your rig, in the event your partner has a medical emergency? · Do you have roadside assistance in place?

· Exchange the details with the other party. · Report to the police (can now be done online). · Advise your insurer and possibly a family member or a friend of the accident and your location. · If no injuries and the vehicle is drivable, head to a safe place or a repair shop of your choice. · Remember “000” for emergencies and check for mobile reception (alternatively use your two way radio) · Always have plenty of drinking water when away from your base. · Cut and store the card size “ready reckoner” in your glove box or your wallet:

These are only a few things to consider to be better prepared, however fine tune your own list dependant on who is travelling with you and where you are travelling. 54

Travelling with Bikes. DO YOU? OR DON’T YOU? THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST COMMON QUESTIONS FROM TRAVELLERS, IS IT WORTH TAKING YOUR BIKES? For us there is no question, our bikes travel everywhere we go and they get used everywhere we go. Yes there are the issues of transporting them and yes we have in the early days had some on the road repairs and changes of how we transported them, until we got all the issues fixed but never was there the option of leaving these babies at home. Bikes, who doesn’t love them? Majority of us were taught at a

very young age how to ride them, we then went on to ride them to school, the shops, they were our transport as teenagers to go to our friends house, to get to that destination of “up to no good” in every one our childhood is many a story of falling off, good memories made because of a bike, so when you are going on a family holiday why would one leave their bikes at home? I don’t comprehend this and we hope this helps you to take the extra time to get your bike included in the pack up.

Our bikes have been to such places as Cairns foreshore, Airlie Beach town centre, Sunshine Coast esplanades, Iluka, Yamba, Gold Coast Broadwater pathways. They have assisted with tourist rides to explore the amazing pathways Australia has to offer, has helped us see more of our amazing Country that by foot or car would not have allowed. They allow us to duck to the shops as a family and enjoy family time out of the car, we can access restaurants, town centres, and other activities, kids can take the dog for a ride in the basket, they

They love this time and will do it for hours, the wrong bike and they would not be doing this and having such an amazing time. · Have a pump handy, this means you won’t be inconvenienced by having to find a servo to pump up those slow leaks. This can be done before your ride, keeping everyone happy and the drama at a low.

can explore the caravan park, go and buy ice-cream, ride to the pool and not to mention they are perfect in caravan parks to go over to the showers and bathrooms. Our holidays or should I say life would not be complete without our gorgeous beach cruisers, we ride them every day and love the time we spend on them. Without even realising we are making life long memories with our kids and each other by such a simple activity that is taken so much for granted.

Couple of points though of advice... · Ensure your rack is up to the task, we had to add some extra stays for strength so when we are travelling those bumpy roads we know it is secure · Keep your bikes locked up, so remember a lock and the combo ones are the best that way you are not always looking for the key and it doesn’t matter if you or the kids need the bikes they are always accessible · Upgrade your bikes to suit your purpose, our daughter for some time had a mountain bike and she did not enjoy the rides as much until we purchased her a beach cruiser with a bag rack on the back and a basket on the front and now she can double her friend on the back around the park and the dog in the front.

· Grab the information from reception and find the bike paths, and make a day of it with your family for us this time is always a lot of fun and makes for a great ½ day full day out and inexpensive. If we can offer you one more piece of advice find a bike shop to purchase and service your bikes, they know their stuff, their service is exceptional and their passion is through the roof. Support these guys and get a bike suited to your life and you will never look back. Our bikes are provided by The Pedal Shoppe on the Gold Coast and over the years have displayed the same high level service and quality products and worth the investment. We are glad we went here and not a larger store. Do yourself a favour and take your bikes next time and add value to your holiday. HEX PEGS “

After years of struggling with hammering in and pulling out normal pegs and watching others do the same, I couldn’t help but think that there has to be a better way. This led to the idea of a power tool doing the work instead of someone using a hammer or peg remover.

Our Slogan “Just Easier” is exactly what Hex Pegs have been designed to be. Whilst they’ve been designed to be easy to use, they’ve also been designed to last. We offer a 2 Year Replacement or money back warranty if any of our pegs are damaged during normal use. They’ve been made out of quality materials.

to enable the Hex Pegs to be drilled down through annex or tent “O” or “D” rings and be fastened without damaging them. They also serve this purpose when being used with Gazebo or shelter footplates. The Stainless Steel Hook attachment works really well with guy lines and trace springs and is extremely strong.

Hex Pegs are a small family business based in Adelaide and are fully Australian Owned and Designed.

HOW DO THEY WORK?

WHAT ARE THEY?

We recommend that if you are going to use Hex Pegs on harder soil types, to use a drill with a hammer drill function so that the Hex Pegs will go into the ground easier.

Hex Pegs are a new design of caravan and camping peg that are drilled into and out of the ground using any type of drill or impact driver. They consist of a main body that’s threaded, a high density rubber grommet and a Stainless Steel tapered washer with hook attachment. They are 285mm long. We also offer a Chrome Vanadium Hex Socket that is Free with a Pack of 15 or more Hex Pegs.

WHAT CAN THEY BE USED WITH? Hex Pegs can be used with Annexes, Tents, Guy lines (with or without Trace Springs), Awnings, Shelters and Gazebos. The rubber grommet has been designed

Hex Pegs are drilled into and out of the ground using any type of drill or impact driver.

HOW WELL DO THEY WORK? Because the main body is threaded, Hex Pegs stay in the ground a lot better than normal pegs.

Customers of ours were staying at a caravan park in January and were using Hex Pegs on their Annex and Gazebo when a bad storm hit. Whilst a lot of damage was inflicted on other Annexes, Awnings and Gazebos, Tony and Michele’s remained in the ground and were unaffected.

GENERAL INFO: We have designed Hex Pegs with the user in mind. We understand that a significant portion of Caravanners and Campers may not have the Back’s, Hips or knees they once had and honestly believe that our product will make things easier for them. We are proud of what we’ve developed and are very happy to be able to provide a product that will make caravanning, camping and the outdoors even more enjoyable. Hexpegs.com.au P: 0403 304 884
