Love an Adventure? Insure yourself. LIQUID LIFE & LEISURE

From the Editor... Hello once again Liquid Life & Leisure Legends It is May, whoa what happened to the first part of the year? Put the handbrake on, hit the pause button do something life is passing by way too quickly. Easter is done and dusted, and what a special time to spend with Friends and Family. We heard from many who spent time away enjoying this great Country of ours. Always love hearing about people’s adventures and travels. We spent time away with the kids, parents, nieces, nephews at the beautiful Poona Palms Caravan Park on the Fraser Coast which you can read about further into this edition. Family time for us is something we value and make a lot of time for. We ensure the kids get time with their grandparents, cousins, and siblings, we teach them to remain close always and encourage not to drift apart. Make time for phone calls and keep communication lines always open. Be the first to ask how one’s day is and when they are asked a question to always answer with an opened ended answer, we try to teach them not to close the conversation before it even starts. In this tech savvy world our kids are growing up in, it is ever so important to keep a close eye on how effectively they communicate outside their comfort zone. Communication is important when travelling, if you just lift your head when you walk from your van to the camp kitchen, to the shops, back to your van or while setting up, you will always catch someone’s attention and if you always play by the rule of answer one’s question with your own, it will more often than not end up in an in depth conversation on each other’s travels, vans, tow vehicles and much more. Good quality conversation plays a huge part in travel and tourism and if you can open up your lines of communication and teach your kids the value to this then we are

setting them up for a good life of travel, experience and friendships in a very strong technology driven world. In this edition, we and our contributors have travelled far and wide to bring some great destinations, we have also put you in contact with some very good service providers in the industry whether your go to be on the water or land there is something for everyone. Don’t forget to spoil your Mum this Mother’s Day, make the effort and remember it is the little things that count. Us Mum’s don’t look for big flashy gifts, it is the time off with our kids that means the most. So when you are thinking how you want to spend it remember all the sacrifice over the years that your Mum put in and you decide if a text is all you can come up with, what is one day in your year to make that special person feel well SPECIAL. We have a special Mother’s Day section page 44 and 45 that goes through some of our favourite things to do on Mother’s Day. Hope it helps. A big shout out to all our clients, readers and community I can’t say it enough without you we are nothing and your support each month means more than you would know. We appreciate the shares and turning to our services and our providers. Thank you.

THE AMAZING

KANGAROO ISLAND IN A CARAVAN

08

LIQUID LIFE & LEISURE

The Remote Wilderness and Rugged coastline is what drew us to Kangaroo Island. We had read all the Tourism brochures and seen many photos of the Epic landscapes. We knew we just had to get there! We took our 23foot Jurgens Narooma family van across on the Sealink Kangaroo Island Ferry and had such a fantastic time! The kids absolutely loved the Ferry ride and we all thrived on the adventure of exploring different beaches and landmarks as well as spotting all the wildlife around

the Island. We planned to do 5 nights on the island, but if you have the time, you could easily spend a week and really explore all the nooks and crannies on this piece of Paradise. First stop when you drive off the Ferry in Penneshaw should definitely be the KI visitor information centre. It’s here you can get loaded up with all the info you’ll need for your travels around Kangaroo Island. There is a lot to see on the island and its great to get a few ideas on what way your going to attack the highlights.

LIQUID LIQUID LIFE & LIFE LEISURE & LEISURE

Taking your caravan over is a great way to see the island. The roads are well maintained and all the destination landmarks are easily accessible when towing a van. There are 5 caravan parks scattered around the island and heaps of great self registration campsites, some with power as well. There are info sheets available at the KI visitor info centre that outlines all these locations and facilities. All the campsites are surrounded by trees and wildlife and are such a great setting to wake to every morning. And of course, you can always unhitch the van and head off for a day

09

trip on some of the rougher roads or head up the beach for a day of fun with the kids. Everyday on Kangaroo Island is an adventure! With so much to to see and do, it really does take a bit of planning to decide which way to go and what to see each day. We did as much as we could over our 5 day stay, but we merely scratched the surface as to whats on offer. We would definitely recommend staying at least 7 nights or longer if you can. Vivonnne Bay, Stokes Bay, Seal Bay and West Bay are all beautiful Landscapes that need to be seen to be believed. At Seal Bay you can head down

a boardwalk to get up close and personal with the native fur seals that make the beach their home. Little Sahara was a great few hours for us as a family. You can hire a toboggan or a sandboard and hit the dunes for a few hours. Not only is it mad fun, its a great workout as well. It definitely works up an appetite for some of the fresh produce you can pick up on from the specialty shops around KI. The Flinders Chase National Park has some of the most popular views on KI. You need to stop in at the info centre on entry to the national park and

pay a small fee. From here the helpful staff will give you all the info you need to find the hot spots in the park. Admirals Arch and Remarkable Rocks were our favourite sites. They are amazing rock formations that are only a short walk from the car parks making them a great outing with young kids. We can’t speak highly enough of our time on KI. It is definitely a destination and an Adventure not to be missed. We hope everyone can follow in our wheel tracks and enjoy this remote, rugged and beautiful place they call ,”Kangaroo Island”.

KANGAROO ISLAND IS DEFINITELY A DESTINATION AND AND ADVENTURE NOT TO BE MISSED!

Putting Debbie

behind them

A great team of experienced tradespeople and marina industry workers have been coordinated through the BIA (Boating Industry Association) to support their members in the Whitsunday region coping with damage to vessels and marinas. The team arrived in region one week after TC Debbie cross land and set to work almost immediately assisting with pontoon repairs at Abell Point Marina. Led by BIA Queensland Manager, the team of nine will provide a quality mix of expertise in marina construction and boat handling which are much needed throughout the region at this time. Aaron McKenna who coordinated the logistics for the trip said “The effort is meant to support local existing efforts. At first it was hard to contact anyone to understand what was needed, but when we finally got through, the offer was overwhelmingly wanted and appreciated. The team consisted of Peter &

Jason Kilpatrick from Orca Marine Services, John Lawler from Empire Marina, Lars Steele-Mills from D’albora Marinas, Ryan Hogan from Superior Jetties, Alister Copley from CM-Consulting, Bobby Hale and BIA life-member Doug Olding. Both Abell Point Marina and bareboat charter operators, who are members of BIA were incredibly grateful of the assistance received from this team of experienced marina industry operators. Abell Point tenant R Marine Crawley, whose head office is on the Gold Coast, sent a team of yacht management crew up to Airlie Beach to assist their owners, customers and any new clients requiring vessel cleaning and maintenance services. R Marine Crawley have long standing relationships with both the insurers and assessors and were able to management the full project management repairs. They have been working to get vessels safe, secured and assessed as soon as possible.

Abell Point Marina is open for business thanks to all this support, so get in and show your support and make a booking. For more details reservations@abellpointmarina.com or 07 4946 2400.

All our other marine service tenants are back up and running and have been assisting both the marina and vessels berthed in the marina with repairs. AB Marine Electrics & Electronics, All Marine Services, Airlie Marine Electrics all provide mechanical and electrical repairs and maintenance services and have been based at the marina for many years. To find out more about their services, which you can download the Abell Point Marina eConcierge app. On a local level the Whitsunday boating community has stepped up to assist their fellow boaties. Abell Point Marina were inundated with offers of help from customers and locals alike during this time and would like to thank all those people who have been in touch for their amazing offers.

THE RIGHT TIME IS NOW

For whatever reason, over the years there has been a misconception that the recreational lifestyle is either for the rich and famous or for the grey nomads. Have you ever considered the benefits of the outdoors, being a boat, a bike, a caravan or simply driving and exploring this continent of ours now?

Why wait till the body gets tired? Why wait till the kids have grown up and deprive them of the opportunity? Give consideration to the old saying “the right time is now. Australia wide we are entering the caravan and camping shows season. This not only allows to dream, it allows to see, feel and then purchase at a special show price that normally does not get repeated for the rest of the year.

The options are generally...

BUY

Get into it, take the plunge and give the couch at home a break. What you will get to see and do will never be on the TV screen and it will be with you forever.

UPGRADE

Most of the sellers will also take your old gear as trade in, they are short of stock, which allows you to jump into the new gear for much less outlay and without the fuss of trying to sell anything yourself.

STAY STILL Stay with what you already have but have your financial position checked.

Westcorp Capital are fully equipped to go through your financial position with you and to pin point where improvements may be made, be it a refinance of your gear or a complete package which may even include your mortgage. There is hardly a case that cannot be improved. If you are in the market for the life changing plunge, contact Westcorp Capital before you make the final

commitment as they have put together show special packages that will be hard if not impossible to beat. We all hear on the news that the interest rates are at their lowest and in fact, the cycle of increase in interest rates has started. Now will be a good time to lock away some of your commitments with a fixed lower rate and isolate yourself from the movements of the money market.

“ Give consideration to the old saying “the right time is now

e m o o Br is ! e l b i d e r Inc

We visited the Blue Buddah Spiritual Centre, which was beautiful and peaceful. Located near the caravan park we stayed at, it was a nice place to drop into for some relaxation. Broome Outdoor Cinema (Sun Pictures), was a fantastic family night out, it wasn’t too crowded and the atmosphere was lovely. We sat under blankets and enjoyed the experience. We always love a visit to the local library and the Broome Public Library didn’t disappoint. With comfy corners for the girls to relax in, we spent a few hours catching up on our education. Matso’s Brewery is a must do! We spent hours chilling out with another travelling family, with the tasting paddle being a highlight for Leigh It wouldn’t be a trip to Broome without a visit to Cable Beach. Sunrise, sunset or other, it’s beauty leaves you momentarily breathless. We regularly lost track of time after sunset, spending the night talking with new friends and building sandcastles (or sand toilets) in the dark :-). Riding the camels on Cable Beach is a bucket list type of thing to do. It’s relaxing, exhilarating and while a little ‘smelly’, we had a blast. We economised and chose a daytime slot, which didn’t feel any different to a sunrise or sunset session. The fact you’re on a camel on Cable Beach is a special experience in itself. The picture of the wharf is beautiful, we fished at this spot for a short time, amazed by the colour of the water. We didn’t have any luck with the fish, losing a few lures in that area, which were able to be retrieved at low tide. It’s quite the contrast between high tide and low tide. We stayed at the Cable Beach Caravan Park, predominately because the girls were amazed at the size of the pool. It’s HUGE!!!!

T V or not

This topic seems to stir up any forum you are on. There are those that would not even consider taking a tv on their holidays, and then there are the folks that could not possibly leave home without it. I must admit we sit in the “must” take the tv with us group, we are all for this comfort, and I don’t mean just the TV, we have Foxtel and every show on every package available to us when we are on holidays. We have had our trusting automatic Sat dish installed to allow us with this little pleasure. This by no measure means that we sit around all day and watch it though. We love every bit of being outdoors and experiencing the holiday together as a family. Whether that is fishing, bike riding, tubing, playing cards, playing tourist and taking a nice drive, the list goes on.

20

However after a big day of exploring and bonding as a family, the time comes that any sane parent needs and that is to make dinner, sort the kids and put the tv on for them, while I disappear into a relaxed frenzy with a nice glass of wine, hubby and the sunset. Once we have enjoyed dinner, I must admit I too like to disappear to watch some tv before retiring to bed, whether that be sport or our favourite show. Television is a great asset to one’s world if like anything it is in balance. We learn a lot from various shows that help us with our business, our health, or just to relax and switch off and perhaps have a hearty laugh. We believe there is a place for the tv on holidays, it gives everyone a chance to take time out to chill.

LIQUID LIFE & LEISURE

T V

Not every situation requires a book, a deck of cards, or to be outside. We are all entitled to a little tech and tv time and more so on holidays. As a full time, working mum I don’t get much time for tv on a normal day and a normal week, so when holidays do come around give this girl a balance of outdoor experience, a good book, board games a tv and my gorgeous family and my world is complete. So if you want my vote on this topic, then I assure you, hands down our tv and automatic satellite dish are a very vital part of our holiday. If you are in the market to make your viewing experience easier than you need to welcome a Vansat automatic Satellite dish to your family.

Poona Palms

A Hidden Treasure

Poona, ahh Poona - nestled along the Great Sandy Strait, 30 kilometres south-east of Maryborough on the beautiful Fraser Coast, and adjacent to Fraser Island. Poona has retained its charm and relaxed lifestyle and is popular with holiday-makers who enjoy the quiet life, quiet water and good fishing. In the heart of this small community is a passion for relaxation and fishing, only minutes by boat to Fraser Island. Poona offers a great place for children to play and swim safely, and is also blessed with abundant birdlife to tempt birdwatchers and an abundance of wild flowers in the spring. We had the pleasure of holidaying at this little gem of a place and wow what a holiday. With not only our kids in tow, but our nieces and nephews and both sets

of parents, one lot of parents set up either side of us, it was sure going to be a busy holiday. We enjoyed 9 days of pure bliss with activities including fishing, crabbing, beach walks, and day trips into Maryborough, Tin Can Bay and Rainbow Beach. Kids played in the playground, swam in the pool at the Caravan Park, hired the pedal buggies, and ate ice-cream what more could a kid ask. Staying at the Poona Palms Caravan Park we ventured across the road to find the Community Centre and what a credit to the area and those in charge of this wonderful place. With basketball hoops, tennis courts, soccer goals, beautiful little park all with a donation tin it is a great feel of community. We did not get the opportunity to eat over there but we believe they open each Friday night for dinner.

FOR MORE DETAILS: www.poonapalms.com.au

The caravan park has sausage sizzle on Saturday nights and is a great chance to gather pool side in the camp kitchen and meet with locals and travellers a like to hear their stories. The boys were kept happy with a catch of mud crab every day, cod and flathead on the bbq of a night time, accompanied by fresh salads and a glass of wine made for happy ladies, they say happy wife, happy life. If you love a holiday with a slower pace, good fishing, waterfront and perfect for kids than this place is worth checking out.

HOW TO CELEBRATE SPECIAL WOMEN! GIFT IDEAS

Mothers Day

By Keiarna Kerr

It’s about that time of year again where we can acknowledge the beautiful women in our lives and all that they do for us! Whether you’re celebrating a mother, grandmother, aunt, sister or any other special lady - we all know that it’s the thought that really counts when it comes to the art of gift giving. Now, there isn’t a right or wrong way to go about celebrating these wonderful ladies. However, these women can sometimes be 42

difficult to impress. As you could expect, the female persona is made up of many different qualities that can make gift selection quite tricky and usually leaves us to play the safe card by resorting to buying them a card and flowers… again. So, perhaps it’s now time to switch up the routine and give her something that she’ll really love. Take a look below at the gift ideas for the typically hard to by for women.

LIQUID LIFE & LEISURE

The Giver: The woman who loves to constantly provide for her family and friends without wanting anything in return. For generous woman, Oxfam Unwrapped is a simple way to give her a meaningful gift that helps her to continue making positive differences in the world. There are a range of gifts to choose from on their website and some are incredibly fun such as buying chickens or goats for families in need. Gift options start

at as little as $10 and you can even personalise a gift card and send it by mail or email direct to your lovely lady. Check out their website at unwrapped.oxfam.org.au.

The Perfectionist: The high performance female. The women who come under this category by nature set extraordinary goals for themselves, which by default makes buying a present a little intimidating. Rest assured a great option for this type of gal is the gift of a massage or spa package. This is going to offer her so much more than a table centrepiece and whether you opt for a at home massage or a luxury spa day, she is sure to enjoy the health and relaxation benefits for weeks to follow. The Health Nut: The #fitgirl, cardio bunny, yogi or green smoothie lover. If your special lady is a lover of all things health and fitness she will love the idea of ClassPass! Exercise is meant to be dynamic and ClassPass will allow her to try a range of fitness activities through a monthly subscription service that provides access to a network of fitness studios and gyms worldwide. It offers thousands of classes - giving her choice and flexibility with an amazing mix of cycling, Pilates, yoga, strength training, dance and more.

Go to classpass.com to see for yourself. The Dynamo: The mover and shaker. Is she always on the go and often forgets to take time to spoil herself? Bellabox is my absolute favourite – I get it myself and I love it! Subscription boxes start as low as $10 per month, and you can cancel at any time (perhaps you’ll want to make it a 3-6 month long gift). With this gift, she will receive a customised box full of the latest trending beauty, haircare, makeup and baby products. If you think she could benefit from a little indulgence in the comfort of her own home – this is a winner! Go to bellabox.com.au.

The Foodie: What woman isn’t? If she loves food, why not spoil her with it! Breakfast in bed is stereotypical option – but it works for a reason. What woman wouldn’t like to start their day with open curtains and by being placed on a pedestal? Indulgent pancakes and French toast definitely make for a pleasing menu, as do healthier options such as porridge or my Raspberry & Rose Buckwheat – you can find the recipe under the beautyfood section at thebeautynut.com.

8 Tips for making your business

Social

Using social media for your business is now almost as necessary as having a website. Customers ‘expect’ businesses and brands to have a social media presence of some description. Customers use it as a qualifiying tool in making purchasing decisions. We’ve compiled a list of 8 tips to help you in your quest to make your business social.

1. Define your audience

Who are you going to be talking to on Social Media? Which social media platform do they spend their time on? What language should you be using when ‘talking’ to them? Write this down into a summary and constantly refer to this when posting.

2. Define your objectives and your expectations before you start What do you want out of Social Media? A massive amount of fans or a closeknit group of loyal brand advocates who will regularly engage with your content? Create realistic goals and put a value against them. How much is a “like” worth to your business?

3. Educate & Offer value

Social media was originally created for a person-to-person dialogue. We could keep in touch with friends, family and they could share things with us that they find interesting or valuable. Then brands and businesses began creating their own profiles, until Facebook was forced to create Business Pages... so companies could also have a voice. Businesses generally think that posting about themselves is the right thing to do. Infact, the general user does not care that much about you, but they do care about what you can offer them in terms of educating them to make the right decisions in your category. Be seen as an authority who knows the category and is confident to share your knowledge with the world.

4. Content

Creating or finding content is usually the most difficult part of social media. Here’s a list of sites where you can find interesting, sharable content: - Alltop - Feedly - Holy Kaw! - NPR (National Public Radio) - Pintrest - StumbleUpon - Pagemodo - EXISTING FANS

5. Schedule

Once you have content, you can schedule your posts to appear at various times through the days, weeks or months. There are many tools out there such as HootSuite which can assist in this.

6. Encourage conversation

When customers take the time to comment on your posts, you should take the time to open the dialogue and comment back. Remember - Social Media is about ‘being social’.

7. Social Media Mistakes

Avoid the following: - Click or Like ‘baiting’ - Buying Fans - Posting too much - Posting old news - Not reviewing previous posts’ engagement

8. Allocate time

Should you keep your social media management internal or outsource it is a decision many businesses face. How much is your time worth to create content, post it, learn from it, and keep refine it for next time? Sometimes it may be more beneficial to hire a pro. Every brand or business will have their own audience. Their audience might not be in their own town, state, or even country. Be prepaed to learn who your audience is, what they like and what they don’t like.

Back in the Tropics

Tropical Fruit Salad

Hot sunny days, coconuts and an abundance of tropical fruit - we’re feeling at home in Far North Queensland.

Ingredients:

Winter was approaching and our temporary home in Wollongong NSW was getting chilly. The warmer weather was calling. So we gave our trusty campervan Luna a service and made the trip up the East Coast to sunny Cairns. We’ve put the jumpers back in storage where they belong and are now soaking up the sunshine. The tropical climate means we have had to do some adjusting when it comes to meals. We always eat locally grown produce as we can and here in Cairns tropical fruits like papaya, dragon fruit and passionfruit are abundant. We happen to LOVE tropical fruit and are in tropical fruit paradise!. Here are some awesome reasons to always choose locally grown seasonal fruit and vegetables.

Support local family or community run farms!

Most towns have weekly farmers markets where local farmers can sell their produce, also community farms are becoming popular in Australia, do your research and ask the locals - you never know what hidden gems you will find. Always keep a look out for roadside honesty boxes too.

For your health

· 1 Dragon Fruit diced · 2 Ripe Bananas sliced · 1 Passionfruit · ½ Lime · Fresh grated or dried coconut (optional)

What to do: 1. Add papaya, dragon fruit and banana to a large serving bowl and mix 2. Open passionfruit and spoon pulp over fruit

Eating seasonally means that you get the best tasting, healthiest food available. When food is grown and sold in your local area it’s picked at the peak of its season and sold almost immediately. Ideally, this means you’re getting fruits and vegetables that haven’t lost their flavour or their health benefits by sitting in a cold room for extended periods of time.

Save money

Buying locally grown seasonal produce is not only good for your health but will also save your money. When you are buying produce that is in season and abundant in your local area it will cost far less than out of season produce that needs to being transported from interstate or even overseas.

If what the weather people tell us is true, we are experiencing some changes in weather patterns Australia wide. While some areas have floods, others may be having fires, some have cyclones and some are just perfect this time of the year. Any plan we ever make is the basis for the changes we will make to it. So if you are currently travelling or planning to travel, please check the weather patterns applicable to the area

in which you are or going to. But remember, changing or adjusting your plans does not mean forgoing the experience or the enjoyment from the experience, it’s just the timing of it all which may allow you to do more, see more and enjoy more, so stress should be kept to the minimum. Equally important is the cover you have for your gear and possessions. Is your policy covering for floods? Is your policy covering for fire?

HEX PEGS “

After years of struggling with hammering in and pulling out normal pegs and watching others do the same, I couldn’t help but think that there has to be a better way. This led to the idea of a power tool doing the work instead of someone using a hammer or peg remover.

The main body is threaded and incorporates a rubber grommet and stainless steel washer with a hook attachment for securing guy lines. These drillable tent pegs are made to last – and to make camping and caravanning easier, and more enjoyable.

Designed in Australia, Hex Pegs are threaded pegs that can easily be drilled into and out of the ground using any type of drill or impact driver. Forget the stress and effort of trying to bang in and pull out traditional tent pegs, Hex Pegs makes securing tents, annexes and shelters a breeze.

Hex Pegs are compatible with many different types of terrain, and can also be used to secure tents, annexes and all types of shelters. Here’s another video that shows just how easy it is to drill our tent pegs into all different ground types. You’ll see just how easily, and quickly, our screw in tent pegs handle both soft and hard ground!

Hex Pegs are made of high quality steel and are extremely strong, capable of holding down heavy weights safely and securely.

Hex Pegs are designed in and shipped from Australia so you can be confident that you are

shopping locally and getting the best quality product. So, why not give them a go and see just how much easier and more enjoyable camping and caravanning can be with Hex Pegs? Hexpegs.com.au P: 0403 304 884

Great for our gazebo! We used Hex Pegs for a marquee at my wedding. They were so easy to use, and kept it very secure in windy conditions. So much easier than trying to use weights or traditional pegs – thank you Hex Pegs!

Hex Pegs are a simpler, smarter type of camping peg that will make your life easier. By using our unique, drillable hex pegs, you will spend less time fiddling with traditional tent pegs and more time enjoying the great outdoors, whether it be in your tent, caravan or campervan!

Although Lincoln knows a small amount of karters will get the opportunity to race professionally in any form, in his mind he is making it to the big show of formula one. While he has that drive, passion, commitment, determination and the talent he displays every time he hits the kart track, Tammy (mum) and Clayton (dad) will do everything possible to give him every opportunity to reach his goal. We make the trek to Ipswich usually two times per week, some days taking us three hours to get there from home, getting home at 10pm with Lincoln waking up happy to go to school the next day.

Family Business Riding the Waves of

Success

For Andrew and Kerri Jekyll, success is not measured by their bank balance, it is measured by the ability to weather the ups and downs in the tourism industry, building a strong legacy for their children and creating unique memorable experiences for visitors to the Gold Coast. Get wet Surf school originated as a hobby business for Andrew and Kerri Jekyll in 2005. Andrew, mad keen surfer, originally a country boy, spent 3 years in the merchant navy running passengers and cargo around the Pacific Islands where he fell in love with all things water and then settled on the Gold Coast where he worked as a water sports operator in the mid 90’s. Kerri grew up on the NSW Central Coast where the surf and beach were the culture. Kerri moved to the Gold Coast in the late 80’s and worked in both Tourism and Business management. Andrew and Kerri met on the Gold Coast and after a stint in the Kimberley’s where

they worked together managing a small resort, they moved back to the Gold Coast so their Daughter Samantha, then 4 years could start school. At this time Andrew was working for one of the five star resorts on the Gold Coast, looking after their stunning lagoon pool and Kerri was working as an office manager for a team of journalists. “We were both looking for something new and were ready to extend the family so we started the surf school as a weekend business so that we could run it from home” says Kerri. It may have been luck or just great timing but Get Wet, with an eye for the backpacker industry, hit the market, with a massive impact. It was just at a time that the average backpacker started to expect a little more from tour operators and booking agents had had enough of operators with little customer service skills and inconsistency. “From previous experience, we knew that backpackers were treated as second class and we wanted to raise the bar” says Andrew. “I wanted to share my passion for surfing and to make sure that the time

they spent with us was an awesome experience”. Andrew and Kerri decided that they would operate at The Spit, at the time no one else was doing surf lessons up on this end of the Gold Coast due to lack of public transport. Andrew and Kerri included complimentary transfers and the backpackers enjoyed being able to explore the spot where locals go to surf, away from the tourist beaches. Get Wet was going from strength to strength and two more Jekyll boys joined the family, Flynn and Angus, no doubt with salt water in their veins. Both Andrew and Kerri were working full time on the business and employing several staff. Then, as with many small businesses the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) had a devastating effect “the backpacker market just dried up, no one in the UK wanted to risk leaving their jobs to travel and the ones who were already here zipped up their wallets”. Although, they were advised to throw in the towel they decided out of shear stubbornness to push on, and the only

way was to innovate and diversify, looking at new markets. With 3 children now and school fees Andrew had to take a job working FIFO in the mines and Kerri started to work with Griffith University’s business and Tourism department on research projects studying the travel and recreational habits of international students. It didn’t take long to identify that the international student market was in a growth stage on the Gold Coast so Kerri threw herself at every workshop and seminar she could to learn about this market, even volunteering the Surf School programs as research for university studies to gain valuable information on international students, the Chinese market in particular. All of this paid off and in 2015 Get Wet Surf School won the Queensland Tourism Industry Councils award for innovation in Tourism for products designed specifically for the growing Asian Market.

internet was a completely new concept, nobody Googled and only multi-million dollar companies had a web site. Advertising was all newspaper articles and tourism publication” reflects Kerri. She remembers one of her instructors coming back from a class and asked “do we have a web site?”, “what is it and what is it for? she replied,” I guess it’s like a business card on the internet”, three hundred and fifty dollars later they had their first web site. In the beginning it was all face to face marketing, Andrew would introduce himself to the girls working behind the tour desks with Tim Tams, no on line booking systems or Trip Advisor, the evolution has been an incredible journey. Today Get Wet is one of the leading Surf Schools in Queensland, with over 10 staff, a handful of awards and a stack of impressive Trip Advisor reviews, and this February recording its biggest month on record thanks to their popularity with the Chinese market during their peak travel time. Get wet is also the Go To surf school for Gold Coast Tourism famils and VIP’s and they have featured in many television shows from all around the world and more than their fair share of celebrity guests.

“One of the exciting things about owning a tourism business over the past decade, particularly somewhere like the Gold Coast is that it is so dynamic,” says Kerri, “there are so many opportunities, you just have to be open to innovation and know that there is always so much to learn.

But despite all this Kerri insists they are still just a small family business. Andrew is back full time as operations manager and Head Coach, Kerri is the Business manager and often invited to be a guest presenter, sharing their experiences for students at Griffith University and to other tourism operators for Tourism and Events Queensland. Their Daughter Samantha (18), has been instructing for over 3 years, being one of the youngest instructors to qualify with Surfing Australia at 15. Samantha has also completed her Tourism Cert ||| and is currently studying Business at Griffith University.

“The other exciting thing is how running a business has changed so much since we started. Twelve years ago the

Even the Boys, Flynn (12) and Angus (10) are involved in the business, they wash rash shirts and wet suits, help with filing

in the office, fixing surf boards and even help with big university groups, cooking sausage sizzles and entertaining the customers with their anecdotes. “Even our staff are just one big family,” says Kerri, “we don’t treat it like a work environment, everyone is so close and we are all there for each other”. “School holidays are a challenge” says Kerri “it’s all hands on deck helping out, fortunately now the kids are old enough to either help out or entertain themselves at The Spit, snorkelling in the seaway or bike riding through the tracks at Federation walk while we are all up on the beach” but the best part is holidaying in the quiet time. Part of the prize for the Innovation award was a trip to Maui last year for the family and this years battery recharge was a bare boat charter through the Whitsunday Islands. Never far from the water, this family knows how to work and play together and leave a wake of success in their path.
