Could you explain the Heritage behind the brand? The Heritage is yet to be written, with some of our pieces, especially the Pandora pieces, I would love someone, 5,10, 20 years down the line to pull it out of the jewellery box and to love it even more so than the first time they wore it. That’s the heritage I am working towards. Does music play a part in your inspiration? what artists would you turn to when working on something new? When and where did Jewel Heritage originate from and get its initial start? Like most things, it was an idea. A very personal idea that evolved into this ‘brand’. I don’t like using the word brand as it’s more of an outlet for me and my desire to create.
Visually, their music videos yes. I think a lot of ‘music’ these days is such crap. Mirel Wagner, she is so haunting and I could listen to her sing until the sunsets. Her words create such deep visuals. Look her up. Whats on the horizon for jewel heritage?
Really loving working on bespoke pieces and Knowing that all designs are hand drawn, what Pandora’s Box. Working with gems and precious does your sketchbook consist of? metals is so exciting. Something in print would be amazing too. A possible huge lookbook shoot Plenty of crap I can tell you but with a few gems. is a must. It’s just finding the time! I have several sketchbooks on the go with many unfinished sketches but I do come across pieces sometimes and question weather or not I have drawn them as they are bloody good. Do you have a favorite collection you’ve released so far? No, not yet, each collection has sentimental value, so maybe in a way they are all my favourite? If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be and why? Wow, probably Tim Burton, a prop for one of his movies would be super amazing. 7

JOHNNYCUPCAKES Recently went down to london, and caught a quick interview with the staff at Johnny Cupcakes London, lovely people really represent the brand! If your ever around London check them out! Youll find the store on Carnaby Street. 1. Hello. To start off, Congratulations on the recent one year anniversary of the store, how did that go? The One Year Anniversary was a really great time for all the fans and collectors to get together in celebration of our year on Carnaby st, while adding the London exclsuive tee to their collections! Johnny flew in from Boston for the week to spend time getting back in touch with the store and its surrounding customers. We had a magician named Magic Singh performing amazing tricks and cupcakes courtesy of crumbs and doilies to keep everyone in high spirits. 2. Does the london store have as big a following as american Johnny Cupcakes stores? In comparison to the US stores that have both been open for years more than the UK store, we seem to be growing just as fast as they did in the beginning. word on the brand travels very fast and we have definitely noticed a growth spurt in the UK following. We are planning some upcoming tours to get to the people who cannot make it to the us/uk stores. The fans are the most important thing for this brand! We want them to experience a great and happy time while visiting the stores/purchasing things
3. How does it feel to work for Johnny Cupcakes? I feel like Buddy the Elf and its christmas everyday! 4. Whats it like working in a store looking like a bakery that sells clothes? It’s really a brilliant concept. some people think its absolutely amazing and want to know as much info on the brand as they can find, others get very mad that we don’t sell anything edible! I think all in all we get more chuckles than hatred at the general joke that its supposed to be a bakery with real cupcakes. Generally we want to see everyone walking out of the store chuckling and happy and feeling like a kid 5. Do you have a favourite piece of Johnny Cupcakes? Everything we make is so unique i feel like i have too many favorites to count! so many good designs, concepts and ideas behind this brand, it would be hard NOT to support it!

6. With the olympics coming up, what can we expect from your store throughout the games? Olympics themed tees! limited edition will be coming out! We will have a slightly higher level of stock to accomodate both our regular fans and the extra fans that they Olympics crowd will bring to our dear Carnaby st 7. To me JC is more than just a brand and its more about the story behind and how it came about, how does it feel to be apart of this? It feels really good to help out and be a part of something that is so positive, so creative and brings laughs and fun to peoples lives. there is so much negative in the world, it brings us joy to try to get a few laughs! 8. Can we expect a JC lecture series across English universities? Johnny would be elated to lecture here in some English universities. you can contact him for one at Linsay@johnnycupcakes.com to set it up! 9. What is something people may not know about JC London? It is the very first store in the UK!!!! with only 3 other stores in the world! Boston, Hull, and LA. It was specially designed by the owner,

johnny and his father. With the help of store manager Kellen, they built the store up over 3 months and got it running. the grand opening was march 12th 2010 and have been welcoming customers ever since! 10. Thank you for your time! Can you please just give a quick summary of Johnny Cupcakes and what it means to you to finish on? I have been a part of the JC family for a few years now, opening and running the store in LA, helping out on the Suitcase tour and eventually coming to the UK to set up and run the store here on Carnaby st, i can honestly say its been full of fun memories. The hard work we do is so worth it. everyone who works for the company is a great friend and we all get along very well, its an environment that’s really easy to work in as everyone is creative and fun and full of great ideas, it almost seems like the sky’s the limit when you work here. Its full of positivity and its been a pleasure and a blessing to be a part of! i’m so glad we were able to open a store here in the UK, we’ve made so many beloved friends and met so many great people. its truly a once in a lifetime oppurtunity! Johnny the owner of the brand is such a great and down to earth guy, I wouldn’t want to work for anyone else. Our days here are very productive and we are encouraged to do well and be positive, a beautiful thing in the workplace! Thanks!

LIQUORSTORE
Liquor Store Birmingham. Speakeasy DENIM CONCEPT STORE OPENS IN GREAT WESTERN ARCADE
35
February 2012 sees the opening of Liquor Store a brand new mens retail store in the Great Western Arcade, Birmingham with the focus on denim and an old school approach to service in an inviting Speakeasy setting. The clothing store will be an exciting addition to the Arcade’s hub of independents and promises the finest denim, casual collection, footwear and accessories from around the globe. With a background in sales for Lee Jeans Phil Hazel, the man behind the concept has used his expertise to bring together an eclectic mix of heritage and next generation brands where each brand and garment has been hand-picked in order to represent the customer. He explains “I wanted to bring something new and fresh to Birmingham that offers a contrast to the ever crowded high street. My beliefs are based 36
around a passion for denim, product knowledge, customer service and high standards throughout.” Sharing that product knowledge by telling the story behind the clothing collections is a key philosophy. Phil continues: “We want customers to immerse themselves in the brands we stock. For me it’s fantastic to learn the history behind brands, what they stand for and involving the customer. The brand mix includes Levis, Oliver Spencer, Nudie, Universal Works, Edwin, Red Wing and many more some of which are entirely exclusive to us.”Open brick work, railway sleepers, steelwork and reclaimed bespoke pieces will house the product in an environment that suggests intimacy and the underground appeal of a prohibition speakeasy. 37

WHATTHEDUNKXKICKSONFIRE Over a year ago now, I thought what would a version of the classic nike dunk sb “what the dunk” look like in a high version? So I set up in my kitchen, got five left feet and took all these stock images of high dunks. Then with precise cutting, blending and a few hours later I had created my what the dunk high. I put the photo of what id made on my flickr page to show some friends and thought nothing of it, until recently. When i was asked “do you know your what the dunk high made it to kicks on fire?” of which i did not.
Doing a quick search i came across the post...To see this I was truly shocked, yet overwhelmed that they spoke to highly of what I created thinking nothing of it, but with how much customs are the talk lately in the air jordan scene, I did a further search I soon found that hundreds of websites was selling fake trainers and there in the nike dunk section was the “What the dunk remix by samwise” for sale! What a feeling for something I made to be out there being recreated and sold online. Maybe nike themselves have saw the design? And working on something of their own? Who knows. Thanks to kicksonfire for this coverage!
