FROM THE BOARD CHAIR Dear CSO Family and Friends, This past year for the Charleston Symphony Orchestra was special indeed – marked by unprecedented artistic and financial success and plans for even greater achievements in the years to come. This past year’s success is attributable to several factors. At the heart of what we do and produce as an organization are our musicians. These remarkable, talented individuals provided stunning performances throughout the year and brought joy to countless children through youth concerts and hands-on work in our schools. They continue to inspire and deepen our love of music each time they perform. As far as success factors go, I would like to recognize one individual that is so important to our organization, Yuriy Bekker. Yuriy has ably provided artistic leadership and inspiration for us over the past few years. He has been our ever present, guiding star, and we all owe him special thanks for his efforts, effectively bridging the time until we were able to have our new music director, Ken Lam, with us full-time in residence here in Charleston. We are also fortunate to have Michael Smith as our Executive Director along with his team of talented staff members. Michael has made amazing progress strengthening our organization, reaching out in the community, and ensuring that we have the foundation to take us into the future. And I also want to recognize our dedicated board of directors who care so much about what we do and devote so many of their talents and resources. Due to extraordinary teamwork across our organization, we were able to have another financially sustainable year marked by one of the most successful seasons in our history. Subscription and ticket sales were up again, this time nearly reaching the million-dollar mark in total ticket sales. Our musicians were also able to again devote approximately a third of their time in our public schools, performing and working with children to expose them to the magic of music. Whether on the stage or in the classroom, our organization continues to make an impact on our community as a whole. While this is a report about our last season, there are important activities that took place last year that position us for the future. Maestro Lam, working part-time in his role as music director designate, focused much of his energy this past year in planning this year’s performance season, getting to meet and know our Charleston Symphony Orchestra family and friends and sharing his ideas about new ways to take and lead the orchestra in the future. We are so fortunate to have him with us now full-time, and I know he will inspire us both on and off the podium. We also worked closely with the Gaillard management organization as we planned for our upcoming inaugural season in the new Martha & John Rivers Performance Hall. We are so grateful for the opportunity to perform in this world-class venue and know it will bring our artistry to new heights and delight our audiences in ways as yet unimagined. In addition to our successful season, last year’s work included creating an ambitious strategic plan for the future. The plan was a collaborative effort between the board of directors, staff, musicians and Maestro Lam and was approved this past spring by our board. Our vision is to be a world-class orchestra for a world-class city. We have identified the bold actions and detailed steps we must take over the next five years to achieve this goal, and we also have a solid financial plan and framework in place to support our vision over the long-term. Most importantly, we are committed to the artistic and fiscal discipline such a plan requires of us as an organization. It goes without saying, however, that our past and our future are totally dependent upon the generous support from our donors, patrons and the volunteers of our Charleston Symphony Orchestra League and our Charleston Symphony Orchestra Chorus. You lift us up by buying tickets, making contributions and giving of your time and talents. There is no truer statement than, “we would not be where we are without you.” Thank you for your caring and continued support and love of what we do. It is because of you that we can look to a bright future ahead. With heartfelt thanks,

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Friends, The 2014-15 season was remarkable for the Charleston Symphony Orchestra (“CSO”), filled with incredible music and palpable anticipation. With guest artists such as MacArthur Prize winning pianist, Jeremy Denk, internationally acclaimed guest conductor, Gerard Schwarz, and “Rising Star” Tony Desare, it was a season unlike any other. It was a season that delivered beyond expectations for a regional orchestra, delivering high quality, entertaining, and passionate performances to larger audiences than ever before. 2014-15 was a celebration of the leadership of Yuriy Bekker, who since 2011 has stepped up in the absence of a Music Director to fan the embers of artistic excellence from our orchestra. Yuriy’s leadership and talent was highlighted when he performed Beethoven’s Violin Concerto and conducted Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony during the same Masterworks program. It was a time bubbling with excitement and anticipation. Behind the scenes, we prepared to usher in a new era and pass the baton to newly appointed Music Director, Ken Lam. Maestro Lam came to Charleston twice monthly to plan his inaugural season with the CSO, which happens to coincide with the long awaited opening of Charleston’s new and improved state-of-the-art concert facility, the Gaillard Center. As Music Director designate, Maestro Lam appointed four new musicians to the CSO core after a highly competitive national audition process: principal trumpet – Tony Marti; principal bassoon – Joshua Baker; principal oboe – Zac Hammond; and second trumpet – Chris Larios. The CSO Board of Directors, in collaboration with the core musicians, staff, and members of the community, adopted a five-year strategic plan with a bold vision for the future: to be a world-class orchestra for a world-class city. This bold artistic vision is firmly supported by the underpinning of a solid financial plan that, with community support, will see the CSO thriving for years to come. I am delighted to report the CSO continues to solidify its financial future, having completed its fifth consecutive season with an operating surplus. This financial success will allow us to continue to invest in outstanding programming, while planning for a financially stable future. This is only possible because of our generous donors, volunteers, sponsors, and ticket buyers. Dr. Janice Crews, the CSO’s first ever full-time Director of Education and Community Engagement joined the CSO last season, redoubling our efforts and commitment to meaningful and sustained educational initiatives. Musicians of the CSO spend approximately a third of their work hours devoted to educational and outreach initiatives, both in our schools and on our stage, significantly enriching the lives of not only our children, but our community as a whole. I would be remiss if I didn’t take the time to publically thank several groups of dedicated individuals whose work allowed the CSO to continue its journey towards excellence. We have an incredible board of directors that work tirelessly to ensure that we will not only thrive today, but that we will be here to serve our community for years to come. The amazing members of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra League, Inc. continue to work their magic through countless hours of volunteer time, and were once again the CSO’s largest contributor. I couldn’t be more grateful for all of their inspired efforts. The CSO Chorus continued to enhance our performances with their remarkable talent and commitment. Every time they are on stage with the orchestra, they bring a special energy to our performances. I also want to thank the staff of the CSO. We have a wonderful team that works hard to support our musicians, and to achieve our mission. Lastly, and most importantly, I want to thank the musicians of the CSO, who have dedicated their lives to this amazing art form that enriches all of our lives. The CSO exists to serve this community, and we wouldn’t be here without the generous support of so many. We have been humbled by the philanthropic support we have received from all segments of our community. With your on-going support, we will continue our relentless pursuit to be a world-class orchestra for a world class city. With much gratitude,

EDUCATION & COMMUNITY Engagement Measuring Impact: The CSO aims to reach a large number of students each year, but, more importantly, we measure our success by how our impact is sustained over time. This season, the CSO provided education programs for 12,300 individuals with over 15,000 unique interactions. Out of 60 participating schools, 25% engaged in two or more CSO events or programs, evidence that CSO is committed to being more continually present in the lives of young people.
