PRESIDENT’S LETTER September 2017
TDC members,
We made it through the hot summer and getting closer to my favorite riding weather!! Cool mornings and warm days and hopefully no more triple digits!! And lots of fun events on the horizon.
The Debbie McDonald Symposium is around the corner and it’s going to be such a fun weekend. If you have been thinking about coming and haven’t registered, I urge you to do so soon. This is truly a special event and you won’t want to miss it. We are so honored to have Debbie McDonald coming to Tucson! In addition to a terrific opportunity to learn from Debbie, we’ll have her books available, door prizes and a lovely bridle from Dressage Extensions for a raffle. And a reminder, if you are coming in from out of town and need overnight accommodations, there is a block of rooms reserved at Hilton Garden Inn Tucson Airport through September 15th or until sold out so call right away. Dressage Universities: In case you missed the August 19th Dressage University by Dorie Vlatten-Schmitz, How Conformation Impacts Your Performance and Your Wallet - Choosing the Right Horse for the Job, it was excellent! The attendees requested a follow-up with Dorie who graciously agreed to come back, so be sure to watch the DU schedule, probably after the new year. Coming Up: • September 16th 2-4 - Lameness Treatments and Biologics For Performance – presented by Jackpot Equine Be sure to check the TDC web site for the show schedule And don’t forget, this is your club and TDC is not just for those who go to horse shows. Would you like to have more social events? More dressage universities? Do you have suggestions for the next symposium? We are eager to hear your ideas regarding club events. Please send your thoughts to any member of the board and we’ll do our best to make it happen!! Happy riding, Nancy Nancy H. McGibbon TDC President

The Tucson Dressage Club is a non-profit educational organization with the mission of promoting dressage in southeastern Arizona. We accomplish this through educational seminars and clinics for our members, the equestrian community and the general public. We also sponsor a series of schooling shows and US Equestrian Federation (USEF)/US Dressage Federation (USDF) recognized shows each year. We elect a Board of Directors from the general membership and are governed by bylaws. Formed in 1975, the Tucson Dressage Club is today a group of dressage enthusiasts who have joined together to learn more about dressage, share experiences, support and and encourage each other. We strive to promote interest in and understanding of the principals of dressage through our many programs and shows.
September 2015 Region 5 Message
Congratulations to our Juniors who competed at NAJYRC in New York this year! Everyone did very well and we are so proud of you. Emma Asher and Traneenggaards Akondo Emily Bug Karls and Neptune NF GOOD JOB EVERYONE! Many thanks to our Region 5 FEI Junior/Young Rider coordinator, Joan Clay, who also was Chef d’Equipe for our teams. We could not have done it without you. Joan not only led our two riders, she volunteered to get gate keepers for the entire show and scribed as well! She wore many hats very well. The USDF convention is coming up quickly and it’s time to book your hotel rooms, airfare and register for the convention and symposium. We are in Lexington, Kentucky this year November 29th - December 2nd. Information and registration forms for the Convention and Symposium are available at www.usdf.org/Convention/. All Group Member Organization's (GMO) were asked to designate their delegates for the USDF convention Board of Governors meeting by August 31st and if not determined by that date, the GMO president would become the delegate. If the GMO delegate/president is not able to attend the convention, a proxy for that delegate can be submitted at any time up until the night before the BOG meeting at the convention. The advantage for the GMO is that the delegate will be known and can receive communication from the USDF office earlier. GMO Delegates are included on a list of USDF delegates to receive e-mail communications containing pertinent information on issues that will come before the 2017 BOG meeting at convention. If GMO’s have not yet sent in their delegate information, please do so as soon as possible. If you are going to Kentucky for the Convention or the Awards Dinner, make sure you set aside some time to perhaps go ice skating in the park across the street from the hotel, or you could get a group of friends together and go do the Southern Lights at the Kentucky Horse Park. It’s a beautiful time of year in Kentucky. Don’t forget, the Great American/USDF Region 5 Championships is coming up September 14-17 in Parker, Colorado. Entries have already closed, but we hope to see everyone there to cheer each other on!
Till next month! Heather Petersen Region 5 Director

A Thank You Letter from TDC Member Josephine Avery Life seems to surprise us with many opportunities that we never dreamed would come our way. This past summer I attended a horse camp at Orme school in Mayer, Arizona. I not only learned more about horsemanship while I was there but had the opportunity to meet other riders my age with the same riding skills and interests. It was so exciting to be a part of a group that focuses on an outstanding competitive horsemanship program. Much to my surprise I have been blessed with the opportunity to attend Orme college preparatory boarding school. A door has been opened for me that I never expected. I have a year of opportunities and growth that awaits me. I am so excited to be invited to be a student at Orme. Life is too short and not many opportunities as great as this are offered to shut the door that has been opened for me. I want to thank all of you at to Tucson Dressage Club for your support for me and hope that you will continue to think of me while I am away beginning this new chapter in my life. I would not have come this far without the guidance and support of Glenda Toll, Eleanor Stine-Masek, And the support of the whole TDC. I never expected to have the decision to go to such an amazing school. Looking back I realize I would never be in the position I am if it wasn't for the TDC accepting me with open arms, giving me a scholarship to start my dressage journey, and providing lifelong connections. I wanted to say thank you so much for supporting me and being so helpful. Find more about the school I am going to by visiting this link - http://www.ormeschool.org/

What’s The Difference Between The Inside Rein and The Outside Rein? Horse Lisening Blog 9/06/2017 While we generally want the reins to act and feel the same during our rides, they do have different uses and techniques. The better we get at riding, the more subtle these aids can be. However, there are still different things each rein can do at different times to maintain the overall balance, power and straightness of the horse. How are the inside and outside reins used? What is the difference between them? Inside Rein Slightly open for flexion When you are on a turn or circle, the horse should be looking slightly to the inside, in the direction of movement (flexion). We often see horses either stiffly pointing their noses straight out and against the reins, or even pointing to the outside and turning in the opposite direction! While there are leg, seat and torso aids involved in truly bending the horse in the direction of movement, the inside rein is also a key player in maintaining flexion. Keep the inside rein slightly off the neck (open) to maintain better flexion. Slightly open to create room for the inside shoulder The slightly open inside rein also allows the inside shoulder space to move into. While you don't want the horse to fall to the inside because you opened the rein (use your inside leg to prevent this from happening), you also don't want to block the inside shoulder from being allowed to reach forward in the stride. Sponsored Video: Equine Omega Complete People often close the inside rein in attempt to stop the inside shoulder from falling in. Do the opposite. Take the rein only a few inches off the neck and allow the shoulder to move forward. Stop any lean with your inside leg instead. Give/release often The inside rein is the giver! Release as soon as you get some desired response from your horse - whether you wanted flexion or better rounding. The release can be from your elbows or shoulders. Push the reins forward without letting the reins slide through your fingers. Ideally, the inside rein will have tiny fluttering releases as you ride along. No pull Avoid pulling back on it. Pulling on the inside rein creates many problems including loss of balance, crookedness, blocking of the inside hind leg, and much more. Create contact through a "hold" on the reins rather than a "pull." And then look for opportunities to release. Outside Rein Indicates a turn (neck rein) One of the main uses of the outside rein is to initiate a turn. We often think that we need to pull on the inside rein to turn, but the outside rein is the preferred method because it helps keep the horse much better balanced. Click here to read a detailed breakdown of how to create a neck rein that turns the horse. The horse should understand to move away from the pressure of the neck rein. Prevents the outside shoulder from bulging The outside rein can also work on regulating just how much the outside shoulder can "step out". Many times, the horse will turn but drift out in the opposite direction. It is the outside rein's job to block the drift. Prevents the neck from pointing too much to the inside The final use of the outside rein is to keep the neck from swinging too much to the inside. This is also important for balance and control. The rider must help the horse keep a straight body even while bending around a turn.
