THE INVISIBLE CITY Only when human beings return to their bodies and senses can they truly recover their bodies and cultures that have been elbowed out by modern urban civilization.(eg.taste,smell,hearing and touch)

Xuemei WU LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE DESIGN PORTFOLIO 2017-2021 WORK SELECTED

TABLE OF CONTENTS

RESUME Particularly, I am fond of landscape architecture and urban design. During five-year’s landscape architecture learning, I often think about what is the relationship between human beings and cities in the concept of a modern city running at high speed. Richard Sannett's "Body and Stone" holds that only by returning to the body and feeling can human beings truly recover the body and culture of those who have been excluded by modern urban civilization. I also think that when human beings perceive cities with their bodies, it is the beginning of the dialogue between human beings and nature and cities. Just like, touch with your hands, smell with your nose and listen with your ears.

01 NATURE FORM NURTURE TYPE:ECOLOGICAL LANDSCAPE DESIGN ROLE:Individual DATE:2020.9 SITE:Chongqing,China The characteristics of large height difference and heavy rainfall make it easy to form small streams in Chongqing. Water can not only carry boats but also overturn them. Water brings a lot of urban vitality to Chongqing people, but it also causes different levels of river pollution which causes many small streams to stink and seriously affects the healthy life of citizens.Taking a stream in our school as an example, I divide the odor according to the catalytic mechanism of point, line and surface, reprocess the odor source, so that the olfactory reaction of campus users is no longer the stench of rivers, but a natural smell with natural rivers and natural creatures on campus to achieve the harmonious relationship between nature and people.

With the need of campus construction, people forced to transform the small stream flowing through the campus from the forest, which destroyed the original habitat of the small stream which causes frequent odor and affects the normal life of campus users. As a student who majors in landscape architecture, I want to solve similar problems with a stream in my campus.

Comfortable Campuus This area exudes a pleasant smell. For example, every meal time, the campus restaurant will float out the fragrance of all kinds of food, stimulating our appetite. The plants in the small garden also add luster to the taste. ①When we pass the campus restaurant,we smell different kinds of food, especially when we are ready to eat. The plants in the small garden nearby give off different smells with the seasons. ②On campus,to the east of the restaurant is an artificial lake, some evergreen trees are planted on the bank of the lake which has no special smell. The sidewalk is very narrow and crowded. Uncomfortable Campuus This area is divided by two flavors. One is the smelly river, the other is the space between people. ①The smelly river makes passers-by and rest people feel very sick, whether it is sunny or rainy. high low

①Catalytic effects in cities The river backwaters quickly when it rains.

Urban base

Urban catalyst

Urban catalyst buffer

Catalyst reaction is to perfect and activate other surrounding elements by introducing new elements with vitality. The interaction between elements and space will produce bigger catalyst points, which will continue to influence and drive the development of surrounding areas, and then produce "Chain Reaction" which will drive and promote the organic renewal of the whole block. ②Catalytic effects in smell Step1:Dot catalyst

The crowds at the rush hour are terrible.

It has a greater influence on the periphery through the lamellar surface catalytic factor. According to the principle of urban catalyst germinal effect,I put the odor on campus into a complete odor catalyst chain reaction through three steps. By reshaping and activating the elements with development potential, I can promote the harmonious and sustainable development of the entire campus odor.

These bubble ponds, which vary in size and angle with the terrain, solve the most serious odor problem. For example, they can not only isolate the smell of garbage from the northeast wind, but also continue the fragrance of flowers from the southwest. Even, they can create an ecological food chain, build homes for animals and provide an opportunity for animals and classmates to get along.

02 SOUND MEMORIES TYPE:Landscape Architecture Design ROLE:Individual DATE:2020.12 SITE:Chongqing,China Chongqing is a city with unique sound memory, for example, the high singing of wharf square, the mahjong sound in the space under the bridge, the sound of eating small noodles in the street and so on. However, urbanization forced these voices to drift away from Chongqing citizens. In a city where land is scarce, how to use the least area to create more space memories for local citizens? I use Peter cooker's concept of plug in city for reference, so that these new spaces can be freely assembled and the voices in people's memories can be preserved. Through the spatial extraction and analysis of Chongqing's distinctive sounds according to Chongqing people's living habits and a certain sound sequence, a commercial and residential complex space with Chongqing sound characteristics and meeting Chongqing people's living needs was built.

LOCATION

Chongqing used to be a city of many voices,it mainly includes three kinds of sounds: human activity, nature and landmark, squares, bridges and shops which constitute the collective memory of the citizens. They will stay here with shouts, drinks, conversations, mahjong, musical instruments, dances and eating noodles. And the area is conducive to the growth of bamboo, which has become a treasure of the people. They also use bamboo to make musical instruments. 1949 2000 1918 1938 2018 1890

The sounds of birds make people wake up in the early morning. And the various breakfast guide people to do some activities. They can listen to the birds where they like to do, and also hear to the bamboo by wind blowing. What’s more, they can also get a social communication time , such as playing mahjong, dringking tea, playing instruments together.

After school is the happiest time for the children, they can have fun with their friends here.Their mother tell them the time to eat through the bell rather than call them by a very loudly voice.Activities after meals are as rich as daytime's. They not only choose to listen to the nature, but also make friends by dancing together. Finally, the day ends at the doorstep of a comfortable and quiet bamboo graden on the top floor.

03 SIX DEGREE CITY TYPE:Urban Landscape Installation Design ROLE:Individual DATE:2021.2 SITE:HongKong,China Capitalists are expanding in the world, and the lives of the bottom people are ruthlessly eroded by capital, forcing their lives to get worse and worse. For example,Hong Kong,China, one of the regions with the largest gap between the rich and the poor in the world, the poor can only sleep in less than 1 square meter Houses, even homeless, narrow streets are their destination, and open spaces in public spaces are their shelters. Crowded urban traffic, fragmented green space, and highspeed air conditioner also forced butterflies to move away from their homes. In this extremely dense city, I use landscape devices placed in different public spaces (such as intersections, roofs, residential open spaces and so on) to provide rest places for the poor, so that they can touch more things. It also helps butterflies stay, inhabit and reproduce here.

Through different 3D models expriment, more combinations are created, from which the best choice is obtained. In the end, the form of frame combination and sheet-like combination was used in the basic structure of my installation. They formed different spatial structures through repetition, inlay and dislocation. It provide enough space for plants to feed butterfiles, and it also create more public space for local people to have a rest, especially for no homes people. Besides,it is an important place for them to create closely relationship.

04 TASTE THE SEA TYPE:Urban Landscape Planning ROLE:Individual DATE:2021.3 SITE:Shenzhen,China Shenzhen and some of its surrounding cities, such as HongKong and Macao, are the main pillars of the service industry, but agriculture accounts for very little, so their food sources are almost dependent on imports. In 2020, due to the new crown pneumonia epidemic, import and export trade has been greatly hindered, and the fresh food chain has been banned due to food safety issues. Therefore people in these cities can’t eat imported fresh food during the time. In such a situation, can we take local materials and make use of the natural conditions of the city to produce fresh products that meet people’s needs without relying on imports. Moreover, this form of self-sufficiency is more than just providing for local residents, they can also rely on other modes of transportation to carry out multi-location sales. From then on, agriculture can also play a corresponding effect in these cities.
