MEET THE KEYNOTE SPEAKERS PHIL BEDELLA Vice President, Comcast SportsNet Chicago A 25-year veteran of the Chicago sports media industry, Phil Bedella currently is vice-president and general manager of Comcast Sports Network in Chicago. As a School of Communication student at Illinois State, Phil wrote for the Daily Vidette and interned in Redbird Athletics Communications before beginning his career with the Chicago Cubs. Under the tutelage of current Chicago Blackhawks President and CEO John McDonough and Executive VP Jay Blunk, Bedella spent seven years with the Cubs, holding key external relations positions including manager of broadcasting and special events, and manager of luxury suites. Bedella is an active member of the Communication Alumni Advisory Board and the Chicago Latino Network.
JENNIFER THOMPSON Global Client Relationship Manager, Edelman As Global Client Relationship Manager for GE, Jennifer Thompson serves as the Edelman lead, coordinating all of the various and global work streams underway for General Electric. She provides strategic counsel and guidance to GE senior leadership and works with international teams to develop meaningful programs to promote GE in local markets and around the world. Most recently, Jennifer led Edelman’s engagement with Penn State University, managing an on-site team on recovery efforts and providing strategic counsel to University leadership and the Board of Trustees. Jennifer graduated from undergrad at Northwestern University before pursuing her masters degree in National Security and Strategic Studies at Naval War College, and attaining her MBA at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
KEVIN PETSCHOW Global Public Relations Manager at CISCO Kevin Petschow, a 1981 graduate of Illinois State University School of Communication, is an award-winning, results-oriented senior executive with corporate and strategic consultative services experience to achieve business goals. As an ISU student, Petschow was a Vidette sports writer and interned in Redbird Athletics Communications. He now serves as a member of the School of Communication Alumni Advisory board. Kevin is a member of the global public relations team for Cisco. That team was recognized by PRWeek Magazine in 2013 with the highest honor, “In-House PR Team of the Year” award. During Kevin’s tenure with 3Com, he led the successful global launch of a new brand, CommWorks, to service providers worldwide resulting in PRWeek Magazine naming 3Com as a finalist for their 2002 “International Campaign of the Year” award.
STEVE SMITH CEO & Executive Director, American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine
Steve R. Smith serves as CEO and executive director of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM), the professional organization for physicians who specialize in the care of individuals living with serious illness, the dying, and their families. Smith earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from Illinois State University in Communications (’89, ’93) with concentrations in public relations, organizational communication and gerontology/health care. Today, Smith is an active member of Illinois State University’s Alumni Board of Directors and is involved in several professional organizations including Association Forum of Chicagoland, American Society of Association Executives, Council of Medical Specialty Societies and the American Association of Medical Society Executives.

ANGELICA COLANTUONI Senior Vice President, Digital, Weber Shandwick Angelica Colantuoni has more than 13 years of experience in consumer engagement, digital and word-of-mouth marketing, strategic communications, media relations, crisis communications and event management. Currently working at Weber Shandwick Chicago, she has worked on social media and digital programs for ALDI, GoGo, The National Milk Mustache “got milk?” Campaign, Bird’s Eye vegetables, Aunt Jemima, The National Pork Board and Campbell’s. Angelica is a graduate of Indiana University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism and Spanish.
ALEX RESIDE Photo Editor, InStyle.com & Freelance Photographer, Rolling Stone Alex Reside, photo editor for InStyle.com and frequent photography contributor to Rolling Stone got his hands wet with film photography in high school. This drew Reside to visual communications at Illinois State University, where he realized that digital photography was what he wanted to do with his life. Well into his junior year, Reside kept watching his friends land summer internships and finally received a call from Rolling Stone’s photo editor. Alex was selected by CMYK Magazine as one of the Top 40 New Creatives, he was also the first place winner of the ESPN “The Shot” photo contest in 2010, and Complex Magazine ranks Alex as the #11 “Greatest Music Photographers Right Now.”
KASEY LARSON President & Co-Founder, DBY Events & Invitations Kasey Larson has been running DBY events and invitations for almost 13 years, now. She has a background in Finance/Marketing with a degree from DePaul University. Kasey holds a C.P.A. certification which is very effective in helping her planning clients stay on budget; but the creative side of her brain also holds a marketing degree, design certification, and a minor in art. After working in fundraising event management and advertising - she joined forces in 2003 with her Co-founder and began the retail design studio that would grow into DBY events & invitations.
ALAINA KACZMARSKI & DANIELLE MOSS Co-Founders, The Everygirl Chicago native Alaina Kaczmarski and Los Angeles native Danielle Moss met through blogging in 2010 at the ages of 25 and 28 respectively. They immediately realized they shared a common dream of inspiring women, so they quickly teamed up and launched The Everygirl. Described as “the ultimate online resource helping shape creative, career-driven women,” The Everygirl has been named a Top 100 Website for Women by Forbes two years in a row and boasts 1,000,000 page views a month. The duo and their brand have been featured in Vanity Fair, Forbes, the Huffington Post, WGN, Chicago Sun-Times SPLASH, and popular blogs like decor8 and Style Me Pretty. Alaina and Danielle enjoy living in Chicago, having in-depth conversations with their canine coworkers, and working late nights. Alaina, graduated from Syracuse University in 2008 with degrees in magazine journalism and psychology. Danielle graduated from University of CaliforniaSanta Barbara with a degree in sociology. .

DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVAL The Documentary Film Festival, sponsored by the ISU Documentary Project, is a venue to present student made documentaries. The festival celebrates the hard work of the students and faculty involved in the project and allows students to present films addressing socio-political issues in society today. Each year, the ISU Documentary project invites an accomplished documentarian to present their work. This year, we are pleased to welcome ISU alumnus Griffin Hammond and his 30-minute documentary “Sriracha,” which traces the popular hot sauce with a cult following to its source. In addition to Sriracha, several student documentaries will be screened, including: “In Dying Need,” “Undocumented,” “Funnier than Famous,” & “Are You There America, It’s Me, Free Speech.”

MEET THE SOC PD TEAM BOBBY BOBBITT | Senior Visual Communications Major Bobby is the Graphic Designer for SoC PD Team. He is also the coordinator of the visual communications panel and the Alex Reside keynote. He has designed everything for the team, including posters, flyers, signs, t-shirts, and programs. Bobby is also a member of the General Education Branding Team.
ABIGAIL BRENNAN | Senior Public Relations Major Abigail is responsible for managing the COM Week website and the School of Communication social media accounts. She also coordinated The Everygirl keynote and agency public relations panel during COM Week, helped to plan the COM Week Career Institute, and served as associate coordinator for Homecoming. In addition to her SoC PD duties, Abigail is on the executive board of the Public Relations Student Society of America and was a teaching assistant for Introduction to Public Relations.
KELSEY CAREY | Senior Communication Studies Major Kelsey is the Lead Intern for SoC PD. Her main responsibilities have been overseeing the team and delegating tasks to each of her team members. She needs to be aware of what each one of her team members is doing at all times. Last year, Kelsey joined the SoC PD team in January of 2013 as a regular intern. In addition to being this year’s lead intern, Kelsey has also been on the Executive Board for PRSSA and was a teaching assistant for Com 178: Introduction to Public Relations. Kelsey is also a student worker for the School of Communication.
JENNA CONNER | Senior Communication Studies Major Jenna is a senior majoring in Organizational and Leadership Communication. As well as Interning for the School of Communication, Jenna has also been an intern with Alumni Relations for Illinois State University. Jenna is also a student worker for Alumni Relations.
CHELSEA GALLAGHER | Senior Public Relations Major Chelsea was the lead coordinator for the Career Center’s second annual Career Triathlon and organizing the event planning panel. She is also the associate coordinator for the Career Institute and the Top of the Class Antiques Show. Chelsea is a student worker at the Center for Teaching Learning and Technology and is an active member of the sorority Delta Delta Delta.
RACHEL GARNER | Junior Communication Studies Major Rachel is the lead coordinator for the School of Communication Top of the Class Antiques and Vintage Show and organized the advertising and strategic messaging panels for COM Week 2014. She is the lead coordinator for the COM Week Career Institute. She also interns for the ISU Honors Program and is on the executive board for her service sorority, Epsilon Sigma Alpha.

JOEYLAUREN JIRACEK | Junior Public Relations Major JoeyLauren was the lead coordinator for Founders Day and Guidebook’s interactive programming. For COM Week 2014, she organized the crisis communication panel and the Jennifer Thompson keynote. Her responsibilities also include sending out monthly updates to the Alumni Advisory Board. JoeyLauren will become the SoC PD team’s lead intern for 2014-2015.
ELLIE MCGRAW | Graduate Student Advisor Ellie McGraw is a graduate student in the School of Communication and an adviser to the School of Communication Promotion and Development Team. Ellie helps the team with her previous experience on the intern team in 2011-2012, and has worked with interns from the current team in several facets. Ellie teaches sections of Com 110 to ISU freshmen.
KATIE O’ROURKE | Senior Public Relations Major Katie is the lead coordinator for the School of Communication Awards and Scholarship Luncheon, as well as the kick off event, Festival ISU. She also organized the young alumni panel and Weber Shandwick keynote speaker Angelica Colantuoni for COM Week 2014. Katie is also the student-run firm director for the Public Relations Student Society of America and an active member of Alpha Gamma Delta.
KENNETH PORTER | Senior Public Relations Major Kenneth is the coordinator for the Documentary Film Festival and the community and civic engagement panel. He is also the teaching assistant for COM 161: Convergent Media Writing. Outside of SoC PD, Kenneth is the President of the ISU branch of NAACP, President of Veterans at Illinois State, and serves in the United States Navy as a Logistics Specialist.
ASHLEY SOUK | Senior Communication Studies Major Ashley was the Lead Coordinator for the School of Communication Homecoming event. She is also Associate Coordinator for the Documentary Film Festival. She planned the global communication and job speak panels for this year’s COM Week. She has been a trip leader for the Alternative Breaks Program and attended Phi Sigma Sigma’s national leadership conference as a collegiate staffer.
BRIDGET TAMME | Freshman Public Relations Major Bridget assists with all of the events that the team coordinates. She was in charge of organizing the Phil Bedella keynote speech. Bridget has also recently joined the Public Relations Student Society of America.
BECCA WILLIAMS | Senior Communication Studies Major As an SoC PD intern, Becca was the Lead Coordinator for the School of Communication Family Day, as well as the Associate Coordinator for the Awards and Scholarships Luncheon. Her contributions to COM Week 2014 include the entrepreneurship panel and the sports communication panel. She is currently a member of the Relations Committee for the Public Relations Student Society of America, where she writes for the blog and newsletter.
