Students and staff are angered by the major Synergy glitch affecting end of 3rd period grades. Dr. Hammond had addressed the teachers affected giving a certain amount of latitude in how teachers could address the situation. “By the time students had been informed that a glitch had occurred, teachers had already been given the opportunity to look at grade books and reach some conclusions,” English teacher Daniel Clark said. A tale of two AP Classes Grand Blanc Alumni talk about their experiences with AP classes

SabrinaJarrah NEWS WRITER

Former Grand Blanc student, Roseanna Rayyan has taken so many Advanced Placement courses throughout her high school career. Classes such as AP Government, AP Microeconomics, AP Biology, AP Psychology and AP Literature either had a positive or negative outcome as she moved on to university. “I go to Detroit Mercy and they don’t accept any AP science classes so AP Biology didn’t help me at all,” said Rayyan. The rigorous classes not only introduce students to collegelevel academics but also help students save on college expenses. “The only class my university accepted that pertained to my

major was AP Psychology,” said Rayyan. “It saved me three college credits which equaled one class. In other words, I saved about $1,000 from taking it.” High School AP classes consists of a range of subjects including United States History, Government, Economics, Geography, Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, Calculus, Statistics, Literature, Psychology, and Foreign Language. In addition, students have the option to take a 5-point AP exam, allowing students to score a 3 or higher to pass. However, scoring may be different to some universities. “When I was in high school, AP classes was a new system that was just introduced to us so there wasn’t a lot of classes we can choose from.” said Rayyan. “I really enjoyed AP Psychology and AP Government, I think both of those classes were well organized and taught. Some perspective on Expanding your experiences the years to come from a graduating ShelbyMorrish senior OPINION WRITER

Senior year approaches just as quickly as it ends. As the class of 2015 leaves, the class of 2016 is buckled up and ready to cruise through the rest of their high school career. Juniors, Please don’t take your last year of high school as a joke. It goes so quickly and nobody can ever get that time back. Don’t get me wrong, taking blow off classes and making jokes about senioritis is the hip thing to do, but more importantly, senior year is the year that large amounts of adult decisions are forced to be made. Take it seriously but take full advantage of all of the opportunities coming your way! Embrace the fact that senior year is the shortest out of all high school years, and time really does fly by. Having a countdown of days makes every school day easier in a sense. There isn’t an easy way to elaborate the decisions seniors are faced with daily. College, financial aid, senior pictures, graduation, open houses, and so on. All of these are factors that need to be considered. Early on in senior year, you must fill out college applications. It is always a safe bet to fill out 3-5 applications in order to have options. Financial aid (FASFA) forms are also key. Don’t procrastinate the important things. Have fun while you can, but still keep life decisions in mind. There are great amounts of senior related activities that can be participated in, walking at graduation being just one of them. Do you already know who you plan on walking with? Do all that you can and make the absolute best of it because it will all be over before you know it. Take care of the important aspects of everything first and don’t wait until the last minute to start your credit recovery class knowing it will probably end in summer school. Nobody wants to spend their summer between high school and freshman year of college dwelling on high school work. It is a new chapter of life that everybody should be able to embrace with an accomplished feeling. Dive in head on, and make the most of the time you have left in GBHS.

LucSavoie OPINION EDITOR

As the end of the year approaches, so does the end of many of our high school careers. For seniors, college is finally right around the corner. That thing we watched movies about, anticipated, and, for some of us, dreaded, is finally here. So of course, the decision of where to study is a very important one. Many have waited 18 years to move away. Whether it’s a few hours away in Michigan or even out of state, many people are going to experience real independence for the first

time. This can be terrifying and exciting for many young adults, however, many people are facing these challenges while staying at home for college. When making the decision, it’s important to remember that there are several outstanding universities here at home. Also, it’s a very efficient way to save money. As for myself, because I’m staying home for school, I’m paying for college upfront without any loans. For underclassmen without any strong college preferences, I definitely recommend this approach. Sure, going away to school is so tempting, but financially, staying home can be a very sound decision. Now, if you save up, there is a way to go even farther away for college eventually. Many people choose to study abroad their junior year of college. It can be a chance to experience the world before you get too old. If you work hard enough in your early years of college, you might

be able to get scholarships or even just save the money to move across the world to study what you love, even if it’s not an English-speaking country. If you’ve kept your grades high, you might qualify to enroll for an honors program in college. Some honors programs, such as the one at UM-Flint, actually require studying abroad experience for its graduates. The good news is that they offer up to $3,000 for every honors student to study in another state or country. If you’ve always wanted to see the world, this may be one of the last chances you have to get out and see what other places have to offer, while studying what you love in the process. Although many set their sights on the school they’ve always loved and the stadiums in which they’ve always spectated, I for one have my sights on the globe. Studying abroad is an opportunity I don’t plan on missing.

For some, senior year is easy, days filled with blowoff classes and simple assignments. But for some, it is a very stressful conclusion to a high school career, planning for the future. After all tests and exams are done, it is nice to be able to sleep in, or just spend time with friends. Graduating is something to look forward to, but also something to prepare for. It cannot be put on the back burner, but have fun. High school happens once, and it is what you make of it that you will remember for the rest of your life.

Ten days. That’s all you get in a semester to miss school. This includes when you are sick, family problems, and personal days. Is this fair? Some students have lives and experiences that are so stressful and tempestuous, we cannot even begin to imagine what their lives are like. On the other hand, when students get out into the workforce, there are no attendance contracts. When you are working, you do not get a warning. It is either you show up, or get fired. “I’m really not sure why students feel that they can miss so many days,” student advisor Kevin Keilitz said, “Unfortunately, we are a very

large two campus school with hundreds of students crossing every day which allows easy access to skip class.” What is the solution? Maybe we could have alternatives, like creating a system where students make up for missed days in a constructive way. Maybe making students who skip too many days give up their free time to be here to make up for lost time. We also could try to get to the root of the problem of why students are missing so many days. “[Students miss school] because you don’t really need to be in school to learn anything,” senior Tia Patrick said, “[Teachers could] make it more interactive because (now) they just put the notes

online so you could just do everything at home.” If students feel that they can do everything from home, why would they want to get up at 6 a.m. and sit through the day? Honestly, because they have to. “I know when I was in high school it was unheard of for students to miss more than 10 in a school year let alone a semester,” Keilitz said. One could argue that the times are different. There are situations now that other generations haven’t dealt with. But should it make a difference? Bottom line, students need to understand that school is important, and the school needs to be understanding of different students’ situations.

As a season ends, there are always seniors that leave high school and take the next step in their life, whether it involves sports or not. For the track team, this season has been successful but there is also room to improve. “We haven't lost a dual meet, but the season is still young so we still have time to improve.” senior De’Aundre Simpkins said. Each team’s goal for the season is to not only be the best they can possibly be, but it’s also a reflection time for them to show that they have improved. Looking back to previous seasons also helps

them understand the level of improvement they have done thus far. For seniors, this reflection is vital because of all the things that have been accomplished by them from then to now. “I was pretty big my freshmen year so I got a lot faster and stronger,” senior Trent Edwards said. “I didn't really think I would see myself at this point, but it surprised me and it;s turned out for the better.” Moving on from high school to college is a huge transition that should never be taken lightly by anybody. This change is also used as a time

to come to senses with the fact that your high school career is over. For senior Drake Gauthier, coming to terms with the end of high school approaching is something he can handle. “It’s a little weird, its more surreal than anything. It’s not as weird because it’s not like tracks ending for me,” senior Drake Gauthier said. “I’m just ready to move on to the next chapter for me at the University of Iowa.” For some, track is coming to a close, but the next chapter in their life is something they're looking forward to.

Whether it be staring at the homework that was just assigned or staring at the beautiful day out the window, or whether it be listening to one of the last lectures of the 2014-2015 school year or simply listening to the birds chirping outside, the final days of the school year can be some of the toughest - and most important.

With the end of the year comes final assignments, final exams, and final goodbyes. Those last final days are is also a perfect opportunity to tell that one teacher, scholarship donor, or friend how deeply they affected and helped you. Although a spoken thank you can be just as effective as a written one, by articulating thoughts via the written word, that specific person can keep it for years to come. If trouble or confusion

comes as the letter is being written, try the following template to get thoughts going until thoughts are expressed perfectly and gratitude is prominent. The thank you letter can be simple and concise or in-depth and lengthy, but overall, be sincere, be personal, and be sure to express your gratitude and gift them the letter before the school year ends.

Even when asked if they’ll miss the things that annoy them the most about their siblings, most said that they would with a grim look upon their faces. “I will definitely miss those annoying things, I mean he’s a huge chunk of my life and all of a sudden he’ll be gone,” Zaremba said. When it comes to the day their sibling leaves, the emotions seem to be pretty conflicting. ”It’ll be bitter sweet. I’ll miss [Tony] when he’s gone, but I’ll look at it in a positive way too, I can use his room!” freshman Austin Roland said. While many of these little siblings seem to be irritated by their older siblings and yet a little excited for them to leave, they realize what it will mean when they’re gone.

“I don’t know, it makes me sad. [Preston’s] growing up, he’s an adult now,” Zaremba said. Some even commented on what they’ll miss the most after they’re gone. “I’m not gonna have anyone to play soccer with anymore,” Walker said. Many of these younger siblings realize that they’re taking these seniors for granted right now, but as soon as they’re gone, they know in their hearts that they’ll miss them. Here’s to the seniors who have younger siblings that they’re leaving behind. It’s a hard thing to do, but just know that little siblings are there to help and support whatever great adventures may be ahead.
