Dear GBHS,

WELCOME BACK

Another summer gone, another school year in session, another month of school almost completed, another Homecoming Spirit Week to look forward to, and another first issue of The Bobcat Banner coming your way. That’s right, we’re back and ready to inform you on what is going on in the school. From sporting events, to dances, and after-school clubs, if it happens at GBHS we’re committed to covering it! On behalf of the 2012/2013 Banner staff we would like to welcome everyone back. For some it has been a rough start, and getting up so early each morning doesn’t get any easier. But as we get into one of the most exciting weeks of school, we hope that everyone gets involved no matter what your sleep schedule. From setting out your Spirit Week outfits every night, to preparing yourselves for the ever-so-competitive Interclass Games. We apologize in advance for the senior domination over the school, as well as over the annual Powder Puff football game. #sorrynotsorry This year’s Banner staff can’t wait to cover all of this year’s events. But for now, Happy Homecoming Week, GBHS! Live it up and stay chill.

PLATFORMS PRESENTED AT CONVENTION A recapping of the Republican and Julie Nichols | News Editor The Republican National Convention and Democratic National Convention wrapped up three weeks ago, each with their own unique qualities and objectives. The Republican National Convention took place in Tampa, Florida. During the RNC, the Republic Party nominated Mitt Romney, former business man and Governor of Massachusetts, for President and Paul Ryan, from Wisconsin, for Vice President. Held a week after the RNC, the Democratic National Convention convened in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Democratic Party nominated incumbent Barack Obama to be their Presidential nominee along with Joe Biden as the Vice President nominee. Aside from nominating the future President and creating policy platforms, the DNC and RNC are also a time to con-

vince voters to support their candidate. This is where the speeches take importance because ultimately all of them, whether delivered by a celebrity or a politician, are designed to be influential and persuasive. Key speakers at the RNC included Arizona Senator John McCain, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Actor Clint Eastwood, Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney, as well as his wife Ann Romney. One of the most talked about orations was from Eastwood who spent most of his 12 minutes improvising a conversation with a chair and calling it President Obama. Another favorite was Ann Romney who according to NPR. com had “one of the most important jobs at the convention: giving voters a glimpse into the private world of Mitt Romney.” Of course Romney took the stage himself and had this to say: “Now is the moment when

we can stand up and say, ‘I’m an American. I make my destiny. And we deserve better! My children deserve better! My family deserves better. My country deserves better!’ So here we stand. Americans have a choice. A decision. To make that choice, you need to know more about me and about where I will lead our country.” Much like Ann Romney’s speech, Mitt Romney choose to focus on who he was as a person. Unlike Obama, who has already been in the public eye for the past four years, many voters aren’t familiar with who Romney is and what values he stands for. Over at the DNC, speaker ranged from former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm to actress Scarlett Johansson to First Lady Michelle Obama. Also, a crowd favorite was former President Bill Clinton. As the last speech of the

convention, President Obama addressed the nation with: “Now, I won’t pretend the path I’m offering is quick or easy. I never have. You didn’t elect me to tell you what you wanted to hear. You elected me to tell you the truth. And the truth is, it will take more than a few years for us to solve challenges that have built up over decades. It’ll require common effort, shared responsibility, and the kind of bold, persistent experimentation that Franklin Roosevelt pursued during the only crisis worse than this one.” In the end, political conventions come once every four years. With the Republican National Convention and the Democratic National Convention said and done, many Americans look forward to the political debates to come.

Standout linebacker Luke Maclean announced recently he would attend Pittsburgh University on a football scholarship next fall. He is one of two recruits at linebacker position that the Panthers have locked up for next season, although Maclean is also listed as a defensive end. The other schools that were in the hunt for Luke’s talent included Buffalo, Cincinnati, Central Michigan, Western Michigan, Kansas, Kent State, and Toledo. The Flint Journal reported that Michigan State had also shown significant interest in Grand Blanc’s own star linebacker. When asked about his (Maclean’s) decision to attend Pittsburgh he gave us a solid response saying “The coaches just felt like family, and the switch to the ACC was also a big decision factor...Pitt also needs players at my position and there is a good chance that I’ll get playing time early.” He added. Let’s face it. Residing in the good ‘ol ‘burbs of Grand Blanc can really have some of us spinning our wheels thinking of fun things to do around here. And while I’m just as much a sucker for NCG Trillium and GB’s Friday Night Lights as the next gal, I still search for a little something extra to get my mind off my next impeding homework load or exam. So I craft things. I cook, I create, I stitch, and I imagine. And I think you should too. This year, I will be sharing with you my favorite DIY (do it yourself) projects. Whoah...I know. Projects? I’ve had enough of those too, but relatively few projects of the common sort involve sparkles, delish food, and new clothes, right? Right. I’m entrusting to you the coolest, most fun, and easiest crafts out there and I’d love for you to send in requests and tips for upcoming issues. Stop by the Banner Room (100) and drop off your ideas or put it in the mailbox on the board across from our room for a chance to be featured in the Banner. This is for all the artsy kids, and novices alike. This is for you Grand Blanc. This is The 810 Crafty.

Dear Angie, I really want to ask this girl to Homecoming, but I have never gotten up the courage to talk to her. What do I do to get her to say yes? Anonymous

r/Konieczny

Anonymous, Girls love confident boys and spontaneity. Do something that will make her say, “That guy in math was super funny,” whenever she thinks of you. This task may seem daunting, but in reality, all you have to do to get someone to remember you is crack a joke, or even ask an interesting question, or maybe introduce a memorable topic of conversation. My point is, make yourself be heard, but don’t be annoying. If she isn’t laughing, she’s probably facepalming. Once you’ve established yourself as a cool, intelligent young man, come up with a way to ask her to the dance. I, personally, am more simplistic, but that varies from girl to girl. Go with your gut on this part, but remember: CONFIDENCE. If you back out, there’s no way for her to know that you’re even interested! Some other things to take into consideration are: 1) Don’t ask too late. Girls need time to prepare and organize, they don’t need to stress about if they’re ever going to get asked. Give them at least a week and a half before. 2) Keep it classy. If you poke fun at a girl while trying to win her over, then you’re better off not even trying. Don’t use derogatory words or impolite gestures; in the end, every girl wants that Prince Charming moment. 3) Be yourself. Trying to impress a girl by being someone you are not will leave you in a mess of trouble. You know this girl and this situation better than I do, so just go for it. What have you go to lose?

As I sat down to watch the Republican National Convention, I expected mostly somewhat logical arguments, with a few crazy ones. What I was not prepared for was the depth of the cesspool of insanity that calls itself the Republican Party. At first I found the slogan “We Built This” ironic, as it could be interpreted as the Republican Party’s confession to causing the problems our country is facing today. When I realized they were serious, it was all downhill from there. On day one, the highlight was Ann Romney’s absurd attempts to make her husband, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, seem like someone who the people could relate to.

I find it appalling that the party of Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, and Dwight D. Eisenhower, who worked tirelessly for the common man, could become so misguided. What was once the party of change has now been perverted and turned into the party of stagnation, whose only goal is to remove every social and economic advance made since the Great Depression.
