The International Equine Veterinarian

I

n 2017 we will be entering our sixth year of production with The International Equine Veterinarian. This is a free magazine in print and digital format. Print distribution includes nearly 7,000 equine veterinarians in addition to a digital edition to the same group along with up to 500 equine veterinarians outside the continental United States. Also included in our digital distribution is approximately 5,000 farriers worldwide. Total distribution for the magazine is 12,500 equine veterinarians and farriers. There is no fee for this magazine because we want our advertisers to know that we reach every equine veterinarian and farrier we can locate and not just those who have paid a subscription.

Our Readership

W

e decided to include farriers in our readership base because it is our belief that proper care of the horse involves the farrier as well as the equine veterinarian. Having attended many workshops, seminars and conventions for each group, it has become increasingly clear that communication between these two groups is a major factor in the care of the horse.

A case in point is the recently announced Equine Podiatry initiative put forth by the American Association of Equine Practitioners. Simply put, the equine veterinarian can diagnose but cannot make shoes; the farrier can make shoes but cannot diagnose. This initiative would formally team the two disciplines for more effective treatment. Many problems associated with the horse involve the feet and this comes into play when the diagnosis calls for corrective shoes with or without surgery to correct an internal problem. Proper hoof care is specific to each horse. There is no one “fix. It is our goal to present both sides of any issue involving hoofcare. And, because they come from different disciplines, backgrounds, training and education, communication between vets and farriers is often strained.

Editorial

F

ollowing direction from a number of advisors in the industry, we have focused on a variety of articles rather than adhering to a predictable schedule. The one constant that we provide is a feature in each issue dealing with Laminitis. We react to current issues and announcements and do our best to keep our readers informed of relevant issues, research and new products.

We have published articles from a number of internationally known authorities, including Dr. Sue Dyson, Dr. Ric Redden and Dr. Temple Grandin, all of whom are well-known within the industry for their work in specific fields. In addition, we were the first industry publication to announce the groundbreaking work of Dr. Jed Johnson who has pioneered research and development in nanofibers and their application in human as well as veterinary medicine.

We balance out the editorial mix with articles of a medical, scientific nature as well as those featuring hands-on field experience, human interest and even a touch of humor from time to time. We are not afraid of controversy and have covered the problems of unlicensed vets and unqualified farriers working within the polo industry. And, we have provided a platform for some who advocate an alternative treatment to traditional teachings.
