Fine Art Portrait Photography . . . What Is It Really?

The phrase “Fine Art Portrait Photography” is in dire need of clarification. I see hundreds of ads and websites using this phrase and none of them fit my definition. Most are describing what I would call “head shots.”

These are mostly straight-on, evenly lit head and shoulder images that are used for job applications, business cards or social media. The official definition is as follows: A fine art portrait photograph is intended for wall art. ... Fine art portrait photography delivers maximum impact and depicts emotion in a vivid and distinctive style. These portraits are timeless and capture the essence of the subject’s character in a vision created by the photographer.

Fine art photography is photography created in accordance with the vision of the artist as a photographer, using photography as a medium to bring something to life that only lives in the artist’s mind. Simply capturing what one sees in an artistic way is the art of photography and not creating fine art.

Before I became a photographer, I was exposed to the paintings and portrait work of the Dutch Old Masters Vermeer and Rembrandt. These Baroque painters focussed on painterly application of light and shadow.

Rembrandt’s signature style included a small triangle of light just under the eye most distant from the light source. In most cases, the scene was lit from light mostly coming from a 45 degree angle. It was often soft and created dramatic shadows.

Every selected image is carefully processed, color balanced, airbrushed and cropped for best viewing.
