In their regular meeting this evening, the Boca City Council voted 4-1 in favor of rezoning the former Wildflower site from residential to commercial. The site, which is directly on the intercoastal, has long been under controversy after it was purchased by the city in 2009. Tuesday night’s decision is the first step in the city’s plan to turn the land into a restaurant although there is also a plan claiming land should be turned into a park. The site is located on the northern part of the Palmetto Park Bridge, and without the zone change, there could not be a restaurant. It would be one of only two restaurants on the intercoastal in Boca Raton.

Community Meet The Candidates for Seat 1 of Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District Commission

By Caylin Hirapara

Two seats on the Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District are up for election on this year. The election, which takes place on August 30th, includes six candidates, each with a different philosophy. Fighting for seat number one is incumbent Dennis Frisch, Craig Ehrnst, and Shayla Enright. The current holder of the seat is Dr. Dennis Frisch, 61, a graduate of Boca Raton High School and the University of Florida. He is a locally practicing Podiatric Surgeon and earned his medical degree from the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago. He has been a member of the city’s Parks and Recreation Advisory Board since 2007 and was first elected to the beach and park commission in 2008. “I believe that we must continue to maintain our current high quality parks to meet the recreational needs of our children and adult population,” Frisch said, “We must continue to acquire “green space” as available to provide for future park and recreation needs. The Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District and the City of Boca Raton must work together for the benefit of our constituents. I am a dedicated public servant and request your vote to allow me to continue to serve you.” The second candidate is Shayla Enright, 26, a medical physicist. She earned a dual bachelor’s degrees in physics and chemistry at Florida Atlantic University in 2011 and a Professional Science Master’s degree in medical physics in 2014 also at FAU. Last year she continued her education by earning a master’s degree in biomedical engineering from the University of Miami. While this is her first time running for office, her mother Jean Enright is on the Port of Palm Beach Commission. “Unfortunately, there is a discord between the Beach and Park District and the City of Boca Raton, which prevents things from getting done. If elected, I would work to make the

communication between the District and City more fluid so things get done. Second, I would ensure our beaches are protected and preserved. Finally, I would bring a new perspective to the District and get the younger generation involved. The District is not very well known in the community. I would make the residents more aware of the District to ensure their voices are heard, and the residents see improvements they feel are needed in the beaches and parks.” The third Candidate for Seat 1 is Craig Ehrnst, 52, who is a corporate treasurer at NCCI Holdings in Boca. He has a masters degree in from University of Michigan in Business Administration. Ehrnst ran for City Council in 2014 and lost narrowly. He is on the board for the Boca Raton Children’s Museum as well as the Boca Raton YMCA. He spent three years on the city’s Financial Advisory Board. “I am running for a District seat primarily to address an ongoing communication issue between the City and the District. Both sides have been at odds for months, as evidenced by the inter-local contract dispute, budget disagreements, and park planning issues. For example, the Sugar Sand park playground has been closed since January 2015 due to safety concerns. The planned reopening date was missed, and the projected open date is questionable. In the life of my 8 year old son, closing the best playground in the area for 18-24 months is unacceptable (ask yourself if a business would close for 18 months to remodel?). The communication issue between the City and District is only getting worse, and residents are suffering the consequences. I respect my opponent’s community service, but I believe residents should demand both the city and district to get their act together or move on.” The election will take place on August 30th, and the elected term for commissioners begins on January 1st. For more information about where to vote in the August 30th election visit http://www.pbcelections.org/Election. aspx?eid=151.

Boca Raton Philanthropist, Countess Henrietta de Hoernle, Passes Away At 103 Countess Henrietta DeHoernle, 103, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2016. Countess DeHoernle was born on September 24, 1912 in Karlsruhe in southwest Germany, and immigrated to live with her grandparents in Queens in 1931. In 1950, the Countess met businessman and engineer, Adolph, Count de Hoernle, at a Liederkranz Club masquerade ball. Soon after marrying, the couple moved to Bronxville, NY, a Westchester County suburb of New York City, where the Countess began volunteering at Lawrence Hospital’s thrift shop. Adolph sold his company, Stewart Stamping, in 1965 and following some considerable world travel and many visits to the area, the couple retired to Boca Raton in 1981—convinced that Boca Raton was, indeed, the “Jewel of The Gold Coast”. During her lifetime, she made major gifts to nearly 150 nonprofits in Boca Raton. From Boca Raton Regional

Hospital and Lynn University, to Boca Helping Hands and the Boca Raton Historical Society & Museum. Her philanthropy tradition was much more than just Boca Raton. Back when the couple lived in New York, they volunteered at a hospital thrift shop, where they both provided music scholarships to students. Her many friends can’t say enough about this very special lady who gave of herself for decades for the community. Countess DeHoernle will be deeply missed by all of us here at The Boca Raton Tribune, she was one of our most avid readers, and was the first person to have a mail subscription of the paper when we began publishing in 2010. Countess’ story would fill many pages, which a majority of would be of her times in Boca Raton where she selflessly gave her time, dedication, money, and efforts to making Boca Raton the special city that we all know and love.

Our Gratitude to the Countess I join our residents in mourning the loss of Countess Henrietta de Hoernle who gave much to make Boca Raton what it is today. A city is only as good as its residents make it. And Ms. de Hoernle, one of the city’s leading philanthropists who gave unselfishly to improve the lives of countless in this city that she has called home since 1981. To celebrate her milestone 100th birthday, the Countess’ friends organized a birthday party, which was indeed a once-in-a-lifetime extraordinary charitable fundraising gig. They asked invitees to continue her legacy by giving with their checkbooks instead of gifts. A similar event was held for her 102nd birthday. Ms. de Hoernle, who died July 22 at 103, believed that giving begins at home, and as she would say, “this is our home!” That money was then donated to local charities that she supported. She has said in published reports that she thinks her work is not done because

there is something important that is still to do. She is by far one of the most wellknown names in Boca Raton, with her name being on at least 50 buildings and having donated more than $40 million to about 150 local nonprofit organizations of her choice. She once told me that she loves to see her name on buildings. She hoped it would entice others who have the wherewithal to help our city, she said. I think Gregory W. Schultz, C100 CEO and a longtime member of The Order of St. John, puts it best when he said that the Countess is an expert at ‘drive-by’ giving.”

“She looks to see where the need is, and armed only with her pen and notebook, with no secretary or entourage, she— and she alone—decides what to give, how much, to whom and how, often hand-delivering her gift within hours of first learning about those who need it the most,” the Wellington resident was quoted in a 2012 article in Black Tie Magazine. The Countess and her late husband Count Adolph de Hoernle moved to Boca Raton in 1981 from New York, where she was just as active and charitable. I vividly recall in 1999 after touring the old Wayne Barton Study Center in a cramped room at the Dixie Manor housing project,

she immediately saw that the need for a building. More than 90 students were using the center’s services each week. “These children need our help,” she told me. “Even if it’s $5 or $10, everything adds up. The main thing is keeping them off the streets, which this center will definitely do.” She immediately pledged to match up to $750,000 in donations to build a new complex. And she was true to her word. Her philanthropic arm extends beyond the city limits as her name is on tallest building at Palm Beach State College main campus in Lake Worth. The viewing for Ms. de Hoernle will be at 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 6 at St. Gregory’s Episcopal Church, 100 NE Mizner Blvd., in Boca Raton. The funeral will follow at 10:30. Countess de Hoernle indeed made this city a better place. C. Ron Allen can be reached at crallen@DelrayBeachTribune.com or 561665-0151.

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

Know Your Limitations! Nobody can ever do everything in the world that needs to be accomplished. In other words, no individual may be viewed as omni-competent. Yet, everyone can do some necessary thing. It’s imperative that people recognize what they can do best, and concentrate in that expertise! Each individual should be more concerned in finding the place and the function to deliver with excellence, instead of attempting what would become an effort leading nowhere or a labor not providing the quality expected, thus causing unnecessary frustration

and distress. Unquestionably, certain people will always be ahead of others on account of certain abilities that come more naturally to them than other functions. Quality productions stem from personal understanding and proper use of talents, gifts, personal interest, and other factors related to an action envisioned for completion! Knowing one’s limitations is as vital as recognizing one’s strengths for the eventual satisfaction being sought in personal productions in any field of endeavor. This allows the work being

accomplished to reflect good quality, manifest excellence, bringing legitimate satisfaction to the beneficiaries of the work as it’s also the case with the one producing it! That’s why in most fields of endeavor, people contribute in the areas where they spend a long time specializing, to deliver their best rather than just the “acceptable.” A cardiologist will not be effective as a gynecologist as he will be in his own field; a tax attorney won’t be as effective in constitutional law as those who specialized in that branch of the legal profession.

The creator has granted unique abilities to every human, and only time, study, and involvement in a variety of activities will help point where they can produce with confidence, deliver top quality, and continue improving the skills which will advance an area of productivity, and offer excellence to those who are to benefit from it. Find your passion, develop your skills, never stop studying and improving, and lead a fulfilled life on earth positively affecting others with whatever service you can provide with honesty, top quality, and ever proven good results!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

A View From The City Council By Robert Weinroth

It is really frustrating to realize the Florida Legislature cannot seem to work on a bi-partisan basis to address the proliferation of Sober Homes in Palm beach County. While helping people transition from rehab to independent living is a laudable mission, the absence of governmental oversight has created, for many South Florida municipalities, a destabilizing force within their neighborhoods. The unintended consequence of the very effective actions of shutting down pill mills has spawned a new wave of heroin addiction. Due to the similarity between the molecular structure of oxycodone and heroin, the cravings resulting from the inability to obtain OxyContin are now being satisfied with heroin, which is a cheap substitute. What is a sober home? A sober home or sober living facility is not a halfway house or rehabilitation facility. Clients of these establishments are recovering from addicts and the facilities are promoted as providing safety and support for the people whose recovery no longer requires the structure of a rehabilitation facility. Addiction is an illness. As such, residents of the sober homes are afforded protections under the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Fair Housing Act (FHA). This has complicated efforts to require sober homes to be registered let alone operate under the most benign local regulations. Recovering addicts and alcoholics are a protected class and cannot be excluded from living where they want just because they are in recovery. Two years ago, Governor Scott signed into law a bill sponsored by State Representative Bill Hager (R-Boca Raton) and State Senator Jeff Clemens (D-Lake Worth), which established a voluntary certification process for sober homes but since there were no legal ramifications for not getting certified for at least a year the law has had minimal impact on the problem. During the most recent legislative session, Clemens and Hager, again, teamed up with bills aimed at the advertising practices used to draw patients to South Florida. Unfortunately, while the bill passed two Senate committees, it proved to be a non-starter in the House Health & Human Services Committee. The only thing the legislature could muster was a bill that provided $275,000 for the creation of a multi-

agency task force within State Attorney Dave Aronberg’s. Aronberg has delegated the oversight of the task force to his chief assistant, Al Johnson. Aronberg, who under Attorney General Pam Bondi was Florida's drug czar during the pill mill crisis, sees two goals for the task force, which was officially started on July 1st: 1. To work with law enforcement to root out rogue players plaguing the industry; and 2. To study whether current laws allow prosecution of illegal sober house marketing. That, in turn, will dictate whether current laws need to be strengthened or changed. The legislature set a deadline of January 1, 2017 for the task force to provide it with a report offering an overview of the sober home industry with any suggestions to allow the municipalities the ability to exert control over illegal practices. How municipalities can address the concentration of these facilitates, which are changing their community’s character, was the subject of a roundtable discussion, arranged by US Representative Lois Frankel (D-West Palm Beach). Frankel brought HUD Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity, Gustavo Velasquez and Associate General Counsel for Fair Housing, Jeanine Worden to South Florida to see, first hand, the epicenter of the country’s recovery community. Velasquez committed to securing an updated DOJ/HUD joint statement before the end of the summer to provide municipalities with answers to specific questions (e.g., whether municipalities can enact registration requirements and at what point a municipality is empowered to halt the opening of new sober homes as their number begins to change the character of the neighborhood). Legislative committee hearings on sober homes will begin in January, Clemens, who faces a primary against Representative Irv Slosberg (D-Delray Beach), hopes to be back on Tallahassee to review the recommendations of the task force. Presumably, it will offer its input for bills to be filed during the next session. Along with the updated DOJ/HUD joint statement, South Florida municipalities will hopefully receive a clear road map to effective oversight of these facilities.

Boca Raton City Council Decides on Wildflower Property Ordinance

By: Caylin Hirapara

The vote came after three hours of

public hearing on the topic. Opinions differed. Those in favor, who claimed that a restaurant would be a profitable and useful purpose for the land. “$6,000 a year in rent can be used for funding the other parks.” Said one citizen. Others said that the land is too close and too similar to Silver Palm Park on the other side of Palmetto Park road. Those opposed said that buildings are taking over the once beautiful landscape, and a park would be a great use for the land. “There’s not gonna be five feet open in Boca for the people in five years,” said one citizen. All seemed to agree that the land needs a plan, and something needs to be done, such as one person who said, “I can’t believe that we’re still having this debate, six and a half years and there has been no plan”. Tuesday’s vote will be followed by a vote to put this proposition on the ballot in November to let the people decide what to do with the land. While the rezoning was a start to the decision, actions such as leasing and building will require more meetings.

Council Member Robert S Weinroth was first elected to the Boca Raton City Council in March 2014. He was re-elected to a full three-year term, without opposition, in March 2015. On March 31, 2015, Mr. Weinroth was elected to serve as Deputy Mayor, su1cceeding, term limited Deputy Mayor Constance Scott. He Is also a city representative on the Palm Beach Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) where Mayor Susan Haynie is currently Chair of this important forum which provides both long-range and short-term transportation planning for all of Palm Beach County. In addition, Mr. Weinroth was appointed to the Palm Tran Service Board and has served as an appointed member of the Boca Raton Airport Authority. Council Member Weinroth is married to Pamela with four boys and two dogs in their blended family.

using make-up or insect repellent then apply the sunscreen first. Can chemicals in sunscreen hurt me?

What is the best way to protect myself from the sun? Limit your exposure to UV rays but do not completely avoid the outdoors. It is healthy to engage in outdoor physical activity as long as you follow some rules: - Apply sunscreen - Wear a shirt - Put on a hat - Use sunglasses (protects sensitive skin and eyes) - Seek shade (especially between the hours of 10am and 4pm) What is the right way to apply sunscreen? Sunscreen is designed to protect from the sun’s UV rays. There are many formulations of sunscreens: lotion, cream, gel, ointment, and wipes. Make-up can also contain sunscreen as well as lip balms depending on each brand. Use broad-spectrum products with protection against UVA and UVB rays and SPF (sun protection factor) of 30 or higher. Apply a thick layer evenly throughout your body. Usually about a palm-full should be used (around one ounce) to cover arms, legs, neck and face. Do not disregard delicate areas such as hands, feet, ears and nose. Reapply often for maximal protection since no sunscreen has 100% protection especially if you plan to engage in water sports. “Waterproof ’ sunscreen may protect up to 80 minutes and “Water resistant” for up to 40 minutes. If you are planning on

People have different responses to the multiple kinds of sunscreens and some can irritate the skin. There are hypoallergenic and dermatology tested sunscreens available. It is recommended to try the product on a small area of the body first to see if your body tolerates it. It is also advisable to check the expiration date on all your sunscreen products, as this can be ineffective protection and also a potential irritant to your skin. How should I protect myself from getting skin cancer? Sun exposure can add up day after day and pose a threat to your skin. Be sun smart and protect yourself from the sun at all times. UV light can pass through some clothing and windows. If you plan to be outdoors choosing your clothing to cover as much of your body as you can, wear all protective devices and sunscreen. Tips and comments on UV protection for this summer: If you plan to be outdoors you can look up your area’s UV index in newspapers, online, or even phone applications these days. UV strength varies with the time of the year and location. Beaches are a high-risk location since sand and water increase the UV reflection and radiation exposure.

Company and C.D. Stroud can provide. C.D. Stroud Fence Company’s first big customer was Sears, Roebuck and Company– a business relationship that evolved into becoming the exclusive South Florida fence installation contractor for Sears for over fifteen years. Over the last four decades, Bulldog Fence Company has completed 55,000 residential and commercial fence installations in South Florida– a number that will quickly rise with a new addition to its business.

For most children, the first day of school is an exciting time complete with new clothes and back-to-school gear. But for kids in families where money is tight, the experience can be just the opposite. To make a difference to deserving children like these at the start of the new school year, the Office Depot Foundation will donate 10,000 colorful new sackpacks containing essential school supplies to nonprofit organizations, schools and agencies in South Palm Beach County. The Foundation – the independent charitable giving arm of Office Depot® (NASDAQ:ODP) – will make the donations during a special Backto-School Celebration beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 26 (7/26) at the Office Depot store located at 14539 Military Trail in Delray Beach. The Foundation is celebrating the 16th year of its award-winning National Backpack Program in 2016 by donating approximately 200,000 sackpacks to children in all 50 states and internationally. During the past nine years, some 63,000 area kids have received tools to succeed in school through this program. By the end of this year, Office Depot and the Office Depot Foundation will have given away more than 4 million backpacks and sackpacks since the National Backpack Program began in 2001. “The sackpacks and school supplies we donate help to level the playing field and give these wonderful children a reason to

stand just a little bit taller,” says Office Depot Foundation President Mary Wong. “We believe that every child should have the opportunity to go to school with dignity and hope. We are proud to make a difference in this community again this year.” The specially designed drawstring sackpacks come in seven bright and colorful designs, several of which are new for 2016. Each one includes a zippered pouch containing a pen, pencil, pencil sharpener, eraser, sixinch ruler and four crayons. The sackpacks do not have any Office Depot Foundation or Office Depot logos or markings. To deliver sackpacks directly to children, the Foundation is hosting Back-to-School Celebrations in more than 15 cities across the U.S. in July and August. Thousands more sackpacks are being given to kids through the Office Depot Foundation’s continuing partnerships with a number of nonprofit organizations serving children nationally and globally, including the AARP Foundation, the National CASA Association, Feed the Children, Food For The Poor, the Kids In Need Foundation, the National Foundation for Women Legislators and Samaritan’s Feet International. For the eighth consecutive year, children of the Navajo Nation in Arizona will receive sackpacks. Again this year, the Office Depot Foundation has teamed up with Comcast and its Internet Essentials initiative, the nation’s largest and most comprehensive broadband adoption program. Internet Essentials aims to help bridge the digital divide for the millions of students and families who don’t have broadband access and may be missing out on important educational resources.

I was saddened to learn of the passing of my friend, Countess Henrietta DeHoernle, Rita as she was affectionately known to all of her friends. I met Rita at the opening party of the Mizner Amphitheater where I was a guest of Yvonne Boice and we sat in the Countess’s private box along with Flossy Keesley who was also to become one of my dearest friends. It is sad that both of these remarkable ladies passed away within five months of each other. Flossy was 102 and Countess Rita would have been 104 on Sept. 24th.

We shared many happy times together at Flossy’s beautiful condo Toscana with both of them on July 4th and on their birthday’s. The last event that the Countess came out for was the Memorial Service I ran at the Mizner Amphitheater honoring Flossy Keesley in February after she passed away and her wish was that all of her friend’s gather at the statue of her to say a few words after her passing. Rita also honored me by attending the wedding of my daughter, Melanie and her husband Michael.

Countess Rita joined Flossy and I for one of their last outings to the Wick Theater to see the show “Ain’t Misbehavin and both of them celebrated Flossy’s birthday with a glass of champagne. Rita was also a member of my Red Hat Society group and enjoyed many luncheons with our group of ladies. She was spry and fun to be with. I remember her joining our group for a pajama party where she showed up wearing a bikini tee shirt and a red raspberry beret looking adorable. I asked her what her secret to living such a long life was and she told me she went each year to Germany for some sort of rejuvenation treatments and boy did they ever work! Wish I had gotten the name of that place. Countess Rita will

be so missed by all of us who knew her. I remember picking her up and taking her to the Pompano Elks Club for the Octoberfest party there and she sang Edelweiss and ran up to tell the band how much she enjoyed them. We passed Forest Lawn Cemetary on the way to this event and Countess pointed out that her husband, Adolph was buried in a crypt there and that she would also be joining him there. Goodbye Dear Countess Rita we all will miss you for all the good you have done here in Boca Raton. You were one of Boca Raton’s finest treasures. You cannot ride around Boca Raton without seeing her name on many many buildings. “Give While You Live” she surely did!.

“Jason Bourne” begins blurry in soft focus with a man who looks a lot like Matt Damon muttering “I remember…” Matt Damon worked into the best physical shape of his life for his fourth time as amnesiac CIA black ops assassin David Webber, aka Jason Bourne. Damon first played the role in 2002 in “The Bourne Identity.” Writer-director Paul Greengrass returns to direct this $120 million production. Greengrass previously directed Damon in “The Bourne Supremacy” (2004) and “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2007). The plot key to this wide-ranging adventure is that Bourne is recovering his erased memory in fits and flashes, with bits of brutal action in between. The first is between Bourne and a huge tattooed Russian man in a bare knuckles boxing match. Damon has developed some convincing fight moves, and he gets to use them all as Bourne is pursued by a ruthless assassin known only as “The Asset” (Vincent Cassel). Making an appearance from previous Bourne chapters is his pretty colleague Nicky Parsons, played by Julia Stiles. Their

reunion sets the stage for a thriller motorcycle chase through the streets and stairways of Rome. CIA Director Robert Dewey (Tommy Lee Jones) wants Bourne brought back in. A new CIA junior operative Heather Lee (Alicia Vikander) feels she is best-suited to lure Bourne out of hiding. Damon and winsome Vikander spend some screen time together. While there is no time for romance, their chemistry is good. Another new character is tech wizard (and CIA collaborator) Aaron Kalloor (Riz Ahmed), who provides an important plot twist. The movie builds to a smashing (literally) conclusion in the streets of Las Vegas. The Asset commandeers an armored police SWAT van with Bourne in hot pursuit in a stolen Dodge Charger. The mayhem must have been enhanced by computer-generated images. A large part of the $120 million budget probably went to destroyed vehicles. The conclusion leaves an open door to yet another Bourne thriller. Damon better hurry, before he grows too old. Three stars 

 Boca Raton philanthropist Countess de Hoernle, died last week at the age of 103. Leaving a legacy of projects bearing her and her husbands’ name.  In their regular meeting, the Boca City Council voted 4-1 in favor of rezoning the former Wildflower site from residential to commercial. Today’s vote will be followed by a vote to put this proposition on the ballot in November to let the people decide what to do with the land. While the rezoning was a start to the decision, action such as leasing and building will require more meetings.  A tech startup pitch event and networking event is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. July 27 at Cendyn Spaces, 980 N. Federal Highway, Boca Raton. Local tech startups will be given up to three minutes each to pitch their concepts to a panel of successful entrepreneurs and investors. Panelists will be able to ask questions after each pitch. Admission is $15. To attend the event, register at http://www.meetup.com/ Boca-Raton-Tech-Start-ups-Meetup  Real Estate company Colliers International leased a 2,079 sq. ft. office at 2385 NW Executive Center Drive in Boca Raton, the sixth in tri-county region.  Visitors to downtown Boca Raton will have a better view of eye-pleasing areas, whether it’s a courtyard surrounded by plants or pathways unencumbered by buildings. With a building boom underway in the downtown, elected officials have said they want to create more meaningful and accessible open spaces that are visible to those walking in the downtown.  A Fall re-opening is still expected, but the Greater Boca Raton Beach & Park District was expected to expedite the

construction process on the all-accessible playground in Sugar Sand Park. That move would shrink three phases into two, consolidating the $1.5 million project. The playground was closed for renovations in June 2015.  For the first time in about five years, Boca Raton homeowners may see a $20 increase in their fire services fee. Homeowners in the city currently pay $85 each year for fire protection. The city manager’s office is recommending that rate be increased to $105 during the 2016-17 fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1. Commercial and industrial property owners pay between $282 and $14,653. They would see increases in their fee, too, based on property size. Boca based A-1 Limo has the best deals for a night on the town and corporate as well as family events, including funerals. Call 561.622.2222.  Here are some good inexpensive ways to spend the lazy days of summer for the entire family. Take the Diva Duck Tour out of City Place in West Palm Beach, 561-8444188 and spend the day on the Water Taxi out of Ft. Lauderdale stopping at many landmarks where you can get on and off. Call 954-467-6677.  Catch Abraham Lincoln: A Man of His Time, A Man for All Times, which will be available for public viewing from through August 5 during the Downtown Library’s regular hours: Monday–Thursday, 9:00 am–9:00 pm, Friday–Saturday, 9:00 am–6:00 pm, and Sunday, 12:00 noon–6:00 pm.  Jason Bourne, Bad Moms, Nerve and Captain Fantastic opens at the Boca and Boynton Cinemarks. Captain Fantastic opens at the FAU Living Room Theatres. Café Society, Captain Fantastic and Jason Bourne opens at the Classic Gateway. The Infiltrator, Ghostbusters, Tarzan and Finding Dory opens at the Last Picture show.

The 4 ‘C’s’ Of Effective Hiring When employers hire someone, they often reverse the order of what I call the “4 C’s of Hiring”: Character, Calling, Competence, and Chemistry. Many search for those people with a good resume and experience for the position to be filled. Once the list of candidates is narrowed, many select the one they like the best. A better approach would be to hire for character first. Hiring someone with great competence but without Character could prove to be the worst mistake you could make. Poor character can permeate and destroy an entire organization. Competence is important, but a final decision should be based on the level of character revealed after background checks, interviews, and integrity testing. As 1 Corinthians 15:33 teaches, “Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.” To emphasize Calling, one large corporation created a “pay-to-quit” program. Annually its “fulfillment center” employees get the opportunity to quit and get paid up to $5,000. The company has discovered the importance of calling, hiring those who are called, or feel passionate, about the organization’s mission. In John 6:65-66 Jesus provided an example: “(He) went on to say, ‘This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.’ From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.” Jesus disqualified many followers by clearly communicating His mission and giving them opportunity to leave. If you desire to hire the best, make your mission clear to them and eliminate those who do not have a sense of calling to the work.

After investigating someone’s character and determining whether they feel called and passionate about your mission, then selecting the most competent becomes a primary focus. Competence is third on my list because many skills can be taught if the right people have the desired character and passion. At the same time, finding and hiring the person with the best skills for the job will increase your company’s performance and ultimately, customer appreciation. Proverbs 22:29 teaches, “Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings; they will not serve before officials of low rank.” A resume of someone’s skills and work history can serve as a good starting point, but it would be wise to develop tests or brief work projects to determine someone’s true level of skill and competence. Lastly comes the fourth important hiring quality: Chemistry. At a conference I attended, I heard a story about the importance of hiring people with whom you have a good chemistry. The speaker’s father had narrowed down a hiring decision between two strong candidates for a key position within his organization. But he was having trouble deciding between them. This owner asked for his son’s opinion. The son’s insight was profound: “Dad, which one of the two will you enjoy being with the most as you journey together?” When selecting someone for a key position, it is wise to look for someone like-minded and with whom your team will likely enjoy working. As Proverbs 18:24 observes, “A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.”

sports St. Andrews Swim Coach Named Olympic Referee

By: Caylin Hirapara The Summer Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro are fast approaching, and athletes, coaches, and officials are preparing. The Olympic teams have been chosen from some of the top athletes that the United States has to offer. Officials and Referees for the games are also picked from the most elite men and woman in the world representing their country through the task of ensuring that the games remain fair and that the rules are followed. Following this selection process, FINA ( “Fédération Internationale de Natation) has selected longtime USA Swimming volunteer and Boca Raton community member Stephen “Sid” Cassidy as one of only three referees for the men’s open water swimming race at the Summer Olympics Games in Rio. Cassidy currently serves as aquatic director for the Saint Andrew’s School in Boca Raton. He is one of the most respected coaches in the sport, not only in the south Florida area but also in the world. He has been recognized by his peers many times by receiving the “USA Swimming Award”, and twice being named “Florida Coach of the Year”. Cassidy played a great role in creating the open water swimming event in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games by serving as Chair of the committee in charge of the sport. “My father taught me how to navigate

through and ride back to shore on the ocean waves as a young boy,” Cassidy said. “I have always considered that one of the greatest gifts I have ever received. As a coach and administrator of open water swimming it is my dream to pay it forward by opening such doors for young athletes today and in the future.” Sid has been one of the leaders of the open water swimming movement for his entire life and was formerly a professional marathon swimmer himself. As a swimmer, he broke many records including one for swimming a relay across the English Channel. A native of Wilmington, Delaware, Cassidy has been a member of the FINA Technical Open Water Swimming Committee for nearly 20 years. This will not be the first major event that Cassidy will be officiating. He has previously been a referee at NCAA championships, World Championships, and most recently the Olympic Trials. “Forty years ago I missed out on a pool team slot for the Montreal Olympics and immediately began competing in open water races just for fun. Within a few years, it occurred to me that if Track could have a marathon run, why not swimming a marathon swim? After more than three decades of pushing that dream, to be able to live it – even as an official – is something I am extremely proud of.” Cassidy continues his role of promoting and leading Open Water Swimming in America by officiating the Olympics. As the sport grows in popularity, his leadership in educating referees and officials on how to correctly and consistently interpret rules and regulations has ensured his spot to represent the United States as an Official in Rio this summer.

Miranda, a 2016 Lynn University graduate, had a decorated senior season after garnering Division II PING All-American accolades.
