Two Referendums on the Aug. 30 Ballot Voters in Boca will have their say in two referendum questions concerning the Boca Raton city council in the August 30th primary election. Voters are to decide on the pay raises of the council members, including the Mayor, and a new referendum amending the way that vacancies on the council will be filled. The first question concerns the amendment to the city charter which states that, “Vacancies on city councils filled by appointment until the next regular city election.” This means that if a council member were to leave their seat vacant for any reason, the rest of the council would have a vote to appoint a new council member. The change, which was proposed by Councilman Scott Singer has the purpose of giving... Continue on page 7

Wildflower Property Decision Sent to The November Ballot By Caylin Hirapara
In a 4-1 vote Tuesday night, the Boca Raton City Council decided to postpone a decision that would have made the former Wildflower property labeled for only recreational use. Rather than make a decision, the council decided to give the voters the power by putting the decision on the November 8th ballot. The site and the purpose that it will have in the future has been a contested topic among the residents of Boca. One side would like the land to be turned into a park, and others would like a waterfront restaurant to be placed there.

Community Four Boca Residents Among 46 City Council To Discuss Sale of Mobsters Arrested in Crackdown Boca Raton Municipal Golf Course Nearly four dozen suspects, including four Boca Raton men, were arrested recently in a massive case charging them with a litany of classic mafia crimes, ranging from extortion to illegal gambling. The federal racketeering indictment filed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York accused 46 defendants of also being involved in loansharking, casino-style gambling, extortion, sports gambling, credit card fraud and health care fraud. It said the syndicate operated in Florida, New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. “These mobsters seemed to use every scheme known to us, from arson to shakedowns, violence, health-care fraud, and even untaxed cigarettes to keep the racket going,” New York Police Commissioner William Bratton said, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. The Boca Raton men are Joseph “Skinny Joey” Merlino, the flamboyant alleged head of the Philadelphia mob who has repeatedly beat murder charges in past cases, but served nearly 12 years in prison for racketeering, Craig Bagon, 56, Bradley “Brad” Sirkin, 54, and Frank “Harpo” Trapani, 63. Also arrested were Carmine Gallo, 38, of Delray Beach. A Parkland man, Wayne Kreisberg, 39, was named but has not yet been arrested. A magistrate judge ordered Merlino held without bail pending an upcoming detention hearing. Trapani was released on a $200,000 bond, Bagon was freed on a $100,000 bond and Sirkin is out on a $400,000 bond. Among the other defendants are several well-monikered alleged gangsters including Bronx restaurant owner Pasquale “Patsy” Parrello, Eugene “Rooster” Onofrio, “Mustache Pat,” “Nicky the Wig,” “Muscles,” “Anthony the Kid,” “Patty Boy,” “Tony the Cripple,” “Tugboat,” and “Fish,” of the Genovese Gambino, Lucchese, and Bonanno crime families in New York. According to the indictment, Merlino, Parrello, and Onofrio “supervised and controlled members of the enterprise engaged in illegal schemes.” Prosecutors say they committed arson and assault to protect their interests. Prosecutors also accused the group of
running an illegal casino in Yonkers, N.Y. — “The Yonkers Club”— where patrons could play poker, take part in dice tournaments, and bet on horse races. The men are also accused of selling illegal cigarettes with a street value of more than $3 million, and committing credit-card fraud. In 2011, the indictment says, several of the accused mobsters set fire to the car of a man they believed to be running a gambling operation near their Yonkers club. The same year, the indictment alleges, several others assaulted a panhandler after Parrello ordered them to “break his knees” for harassing customers outside his restaurant. They first threatened the wrong man, the indictment says. Merlino is mentioned in connection with only a few of the allegations in the indictment, including participating in three sports gambling businesses — one based in Costa Rica, the other two operating in New York, New Jersey and Florida. Merlino is also accused of participating in a scheme to bribe doctors to prescribe unnecessary “prescription compound cream” to patients, the indictment says. If convicted of racketeering conspiracy, he faces up to 20 years in prison. “He lived a pretty good lifestyle down there in Florida. People couldn’t figure out how he had a nice condo, a business, going to great restaurants, living it up,” said John Apeldorn, former head of the Philadelphia police organized crime intelligence unit. “He was living the life of Riley.” Merlino was released from federal prison in 2011 after serving about 12 years on a 2001 racketeering conviction. He later served about three months in a Miami prison after he was caught associating with Philly mobster John “Johnny Chang” Ciancaglini at a Boca Raton cigar bar in 2014. That violated the terms of his probation. Merlino regained his freedom in April 2015. “He’s out. He’s a free man,” Merlino’s attorney, Edwin Jacobs, said at the time. Authorities say they recovered three handguns, a shotgun, gambling paraphernalia, and more than $30,000 in cash. Information from the Associated Press was used to supplement this report.
Boca has become more populated, and home developers are looking for more space to build homes. Golf courses have recently become targets in South Florida, as they are some of the last large green spaces left. The Boca Raton Municipal Golf course is no different, as the city of Boca begins to discuss the possibility of its sale. The golf course is located at 8111 Golf Course Rd, just west of the Florida Turnpike on Glades. The course is about 194 acres, with 18 holes, a clubhouse, driving range and putting greens. The course is city owned. Four developers have voiced interest in the property, but most recently Lennar Corp, according to the Sun Sentinel, offered the city $37.5 million for the sale of the Boca Raton Municipal Golf course. On top of the $37.5 million, Lennar offered to give the city the Ocean Breeze Golf course. Lennar purchased the repos-
sessed and recently closed Ocean Breeze Golf & Country Club, from Wells Fargo, who repossessed the property. The sale of the property, located at 5800 NW 2nd Ave, was finalized on July 1. Other offers for the Boca Municipal Golf Course include a $31.2 million offer from Compson Boca Argent LLC. Another is from Toll Brothers, who offered $2.1 million for 30 acres of the land, while continuing to operate the golf course for the city for 40 years. If the city council decides to approve a sale, it would have to go through Palm Beach County approval first. If the council decides to consider sale, they would allow the developers to compete for the highest price under terms set by the city. Boca Raton City Council will begin discussion on Monday of several offers that it received from developers. The meeting will take place at City Hall at 201 W. Palmetto Park Rd.

Honoring Outstanding Service When many people today hear the name Wayne Barton, images of the operator of a local after school program on the east side of Boca Raton come to mind. But few know of the retired decorated police officer, turned pied piper who has dedicated his career and life to helping the needy in his community. I recently learned that my friend, Mr. Barton, received national attention when he was part of a team that was awarded the 2016 National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation’s Celebration of Service to America and Service to Community Radio Awards. The honor was bestowed at the organization’s annual black tie gala event in Washington, D.C. Along with honoring broadcasters, NABEF presents the Service to America Leadership Award to a high-profile individual who has performed extraordinary service in bettering the lives of others. It also awards the Corporate Leadership
Award to a non-broadcast business that exemplifies an extraordinary focus on community service. The Wayne Barton Foundation has partnered with Broward Sheriff Scott Israel and WHQT (Hot105) Radio’s parent company, Cox Media Group, to feed the community throughout the year. Each week, Barton delivers 100,000 pounds of food from local grocers to communities across Broward County where a cadre of volunteers feed between 1,500 and 2,000 people, including retirees and families on fixed income. Some of these people line up with their baskets to get food, produce or fresh dairy products. The food sometimes feed their families for a week. Last Thanksgiving he helped the station give away 5.2 million pounds of food including 3,100 turkeys. For many of the recipients, the cost of holding a traditional Thanksgiving for their families was just too much.
Hot105, which can be heard from Palm Beach County to the Florida Keys, uses the reach of its airwaves to announce the locations of the food drives and enlist volunteers each week. Barton told me that he hopes that other organizations, in particular the media, will follow the precedence set by Cox Media Group. “This is not about Cox Media Group tooting their horn but about setting examples across the nation,” he said. “I hope that others will say, “Now that Cox has done this, I should do my part too.’” Barton, who retired in 1999, after 21 years as a local police officer, has been holding food drives for many years in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties. Over the 30 years I have known this brother, he has embraced any project that improves the quality of life for children and their families with grace, enthusiasm and wisdom. He also has
cajoled volunteers, managed the distribution process, and yes, nurtured, and inspired this charitable organization. Wayne is a quiet example to many who serves others and simply tries to follow in the footsteps of Christ. He tries to follow Jesus’ model of openness to others and is big on building relationships with groups that work to meet basic human needs. Organizations like the Wayne Barton Foundation exist to show the love of Christ, to show the love of community and to help those around us. As I reflect on the name of the award, it is only fitting that Wayne be this year’s recipient. He knows what it means to serve America, be a friend to somebody in need and a community partner. C. POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.
Choose Your Own Happiness! Recently I was reading an interesting book in which the author was presenting several unique experiences of his life in the earlier periods of his childhood and youth. When describing some pleasurable events he inevitably concluded with the phrase: “And I was happy then and didn’t even know it.” It is quite possible for anyone to misjudge one’s personal happiness. Perhaps by being without any previously set standard for happiness, some people may enjoy various adventures without knowing at the time if they could be classified as happy experiences; it takes growth and maturity to enable one to look back and recognize certain life events as fitting that category.
Much better yet, is the recognition that anyone can and should have regarding the undeniable truth that “happiness is a choice.” I put these words within quotation marks because they also constitute the title of a significant book, co-authored by two psychiatrists. But it is very true that happiness is something which varies from person to person, though each individual is responsible to choose it under any circumstances. Wars may be raging round-about us, conditions may be gloomy where we are, difficulties of any kind may assail us. Yet, in the midst of any such things, we can still choose to be happy. Other people may somewhat contribute to our happiness, but ultimately nobody can really make us
happy! Happiness is not a condition dependent on everything going our way all the time, but something we may apprehend for ourselves whether all is well or nothing is in our favor. Life daily dispenses both good and bad things to every earth dweller. Human beings need discernment in ascertaining what is personally beneficial, or something to be rejected. It is in the midst of confronting either good or bad experiences that the choice of being truly happy must be given a chance. In the case of the bad which so often comes to us, being happy in spite of that can best enable a person to face the distress, to carry the burden, or to live with the pain which may have come
to dwell in a life much longer than one might desire. Avoid confusing genuine happiness with events that come and go, which have only a momentary thrill, leaving afterward a bad taste, or permanent scars which will continually rob one of maximum and permanent happiness. Allow legitimate happiness to take up residence in your being, in order to give color and exhilaration to everything else happening to you, while maintaining equilibrium between the inevitable blows that life hurls at us, and the happiness that can also rule in your heart! Allow happiness to win!
Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

‘White Coats-4-Care’ Reception Raises $47,000 To Benefit Local Medicine Students
The sixth annual “White Coats-4-Care” reception -- sponsored and hosted by Kaye Communications and attended by 220 guests including donors, students, and key leaders from within the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine
-- raised $47,000 to ‘dress and equip’ this year’s incoming class of medical students with a portion of the proceeds going to scholarships at Florida Atlantic University’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine. Co-hosted for the fifth year by the Waterstone Resort & Marina, the event is presented annually to heighten awareness of the ‘first and only’ medical school in Palm Beach County, to embrace Florida’s future physicians with a warm community welcome and raise vital funds to equip these students with the tools they need to begin their medical education and launch their careers. Since its inception, the annual WC4C events have raised a total of nearly $200,000. “This year we introduced a new dynamic to the reception that demonstrated how our future physicians learn,” noted Kaye Communications Founder & Chief Strategist Bonnie Kaye who along with firm
partner and husband Jon Kaye created and has presented the WC4C reception for six consecutive years. Attendees were front-and-center as second-year medical students responded to a life-threatening patient emergency in simulated experience with patient mannequin named “Martha” from the FAU Simulation Center. “As a community-based medical school, the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine is truly ‘your’ medical school - and our ultimate goal is to serve you,” shared Interim Dean Arthur J. Ross, III. “Our entire reason for existing is to improve the health and wellness of the people of South Florida and beyond. We do so via the students and residents we educate as well as by the knowledge we discover. People don’t just want to live longer, they want to live better and be well.” “Being an annual sell-out event during the summer months, speaks volumes as community leaders in business, healthcare, education and government recognize and converge to celebrate one of Boca Raton’s most treasured health and wellness assets and support its new incoming class of medical students,” added Jon Kaye. Sponsors include Excell Auto Group, Dalsimer Atlas, Republic National, Connie Duglin Specialty Linen Rental, Boca Magazine and Boca Tribune. FAU’s Charles E. Schmidt College of
Medicine officially welcomed its sixth incoming class of 64 students on Friday, August 5th at its coveted White Coat Ceremony. During the ceremony, each medical student received a white coat that represents integrity, compassion and trust and symbolizes their shared commitment to serve patients and honor an oath they will collectively develop before the ceremony that will serve as its own code of conduct throughout medical school and as physicians. A ‘welcome to the community’ note from each WC4C donor was inserted into a student’s coat pocket. The incoming class has a cumulative GPA of 3.7 and an average MCAT score of 32, which is above the national average. Most of the major colleges in Florida are represented including students from FAU. Other students in the class attended undergraduate institutions such as Boston University, Yale University, George Washington University, University of California-Davis, Brigham Young University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Duke University, Johns Hopkins, Ohio State University, and others.
The former Wildflower site, which is directly on the intercoastal, has long been under controversy after it was purchased by the city in 2009. Last month the council voted 4-1 in favor of rezoning the former Wildflower site from residential to commercial. This was the first step in the more popular but not unopposed option to turn the land into a restaurant. The property at 551 E. Palmetto Park Road was once the site of the Wildflower nightclub, and those in favor of the restaurant want to restore that purpose.
After an hour of public hearings about the land on Tuesday night, the council decided to give the vote to the people of Boca Raton. If the rule is passed in November, it would mean that the land cannot be used for anything other than public recreation, so a restaurant could not be built on the land. The site would likely at that point be turned into a park, some residents even presenting ideas of a park with water taxis and playgrounds. Robert Weinroth said during the meeting, that the vote is the only way to get this decision resolved. He said, “The reason that I think that this should go to a vote is because honestly, I don’t think that we know what the voters want, and I don’t think that this can continue until we do.” The other councilmen echoed this, leading the decision to be sent to the November ballot. While many resident voices have been heard throughout hearings and council meetings, only a vote can solidify what the residents of Boca want for this land, and finally get the ball rolling on making something out of the empty Boca waterfront property.
Two Referendum Questions on the Aug. 30 Ballot
voters a better say in who will fill the empty seat left by any council member, including the mayor. The change states, “The proposed charter amendment would provide: vacancies on city council, including the office of mayor, will be filled by special election for the unexpired term.” Rather than fill the empty seat without voter say, with the amendment, the city would hold a special election at some point within 90 days of the vacancy. This gives the residents a say in who is representing them if a councilmember resigns. On the other hand, holding a special election could cost the city thousands of dollars. The other proposed referendum is an increase in salary for all city councilmembers including the mayor. The current salaries of the council members sit at $7,200 annually, and the mayor’s salary is $9,000 annually. The proposed raise of the council members would bring their salaries to $28,000, and the mayor’s to $38,000. For comparison, in Delray Beach, the mayor’s salary is $12,000 annually, and the commissioners salaries are $9,000. Boynton Beach salaries are higher with the Mayor making $18,809, and the commissioners making $15,675 annually.
www.bocaratontribune.com
The pay raise has been discussed at various meetings throughout the year. If approved by the voters, this will be the first pay increase for Boca Raton’s elected officials in more than three decades. Our Mayor and Council Members set policy for a municipality of over 90,000 residents. Although the jobs are listed as part time, council members have said that they spend 20 to 30 hours per week on city work. The salary increase was proposed by a Boca resident to help to continue to attract qualified candidates for these positions in the future. On Tuesday, August 30th, registered voters must go to their designated poll location to cast their vote. More information at: https://www.pbcelections.org/ precinctfinder.asp

Meryl Streep as the World’s Worst Singer
Charlotte’s Travels
Photos by Charlotte Beasley
It was a very early Saturday morning today as I travelled to St. Gregory’s Church for the memorial service for Countess DeHoernle. A packed beautiful church, the service was awesome. The Countess’s daughter, Carol Wagman did the eulogy to the Countess and her children all read from the scriptures. After the service the guests walked across the street to a reception at Ruth Chris for lunch.

There are those who think Meryl Streep can do know wrong. In “Florence Foster Jenkins” she does wrong deliberately. She is both hilarious and touching as a New York Socialite with delusions she could be a great opera singer. Florence Foster Jenkins was a real person, born in 1868 and died in 1944, when this movie is set. She got her last name from an ill-fated first marriage to a man with syphilis. After his death she took up with a handsome but not very talented British actor named St. Clair Bayfield (Hugh Grant). St. Clair was dedicated to Florence in his fashion, but he had a babe, Kathleen (Rebecca Ferguson) on the side. Florence Foster was born into a Pennsylvania family with a certain amount of wealth. She took piano lessons as a child and became quite a little virtuoso. When she asked her father for the money to study music seriously in Paris, he refused. She rebelled by marrying the older Dr. Jenkins, which proved a tragic choice. The whole of “Florence Foster Jenkins,” written by Nicholas Martin and directed by Stephen Frears (“The Queen”), is devoted to the advance preparations for Florence to perform her first public concert, at Carnegie Hall no less. Florence auditioned pianists, and so we
meet Cosme McMoon, played by Big Bang Theory’s Simon Helberg, who threatens to steal the whole movie from the great actress. Florence Foster Jenkins was simply terrible as a singer. She was consistently flat, her tempo was off and she mangled pronunciation of foreign words. She had founded the Verdi Club expressly as a showcase for her own recitals. She stacked the deck with wealthy friends who all assured her she was wonderful. Through the expressive face of Simon Helberg we see the horror of Cosme McMoon; a serious young musician who is tortured by Florence’s mangling of arias. Meryl Streep is actually a very good singer. It is a measure of her vocal skill that she could sing so horribly, and keep a straight face. “Florence Foster Jenkins” is a very funny film that is ultimately a tragedy. Meryl Streep is one of the few actresses in the world who can be-laugh-out-loud funny and heartbreaking at the same time. This movie is best appreciated for those who have dipped their toes into the perilous seas of musical performance. I am one of those poor wretches, and I loved this movie.

A View From The City Council
By Barry Epstein Dr. Ed Moore speaks on the Impact of National Events on the Future of Florida at the next Gold Coast Tiger Bay Club, 11:30 a.m. Aug. 10 at City Fish Market, Glades and the Turnpike. RSVP at http://www.goldcoasttigerbayclub.com/event/ed-moore-ph-d-speakson-the-impact-of-national-events-on-thefuture-of-florida/. It will be up to Boca Raton voters to decide how city-owned land along the Intracoastal Waterway can be used, city leaders decided. In a 4-1 vote, with Scott Singer dissenting, the City Council postponed making a decision on a proposed rule that would dictate all city-owned land adjacent to the Intracoastal Waterway only be used for public recreation, public boating access, public streets and city stormwater uses. Voters will vote on Nov. 8. More townhomes are being built in Boca Dunes Club & Country Club. Local real estate may be heading into a seller’s market. A new development has been proposed for the south side of Glades Road just east of Westwinds plaza (Home Depot). It will be status quo for Boca Raton golfers for at least another month, city leaders have decided, giving city staff 30 days to qualify at least seven proposals Boca has received from developers looking to build homes on the Boca Raton Municipal Golf Course, just west of Florida’s Turnpike. Palm Beach County Commissioner and former Boca Raton Mayor Steven L. Abrams has been elected vice chair of the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority Governing Board.
Late-night drivers can expect detours this week on a main road in Boca Raton. Spanish River Boulevard will be closed between Broken Sound Boulevard and Airport Road from 10 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday. Traffic will be redirected via Broken Sound Boulevard and Dixie Highway. A Boca Raton man has claimed a $2 million Powerball prize, the Florida Lottery announced. Raymond Maingrette, 59, matched all five of the white ball numbers, but did not match the Powerball during the July 27 drawing. His winning ticket was purchased at Publix, at 22973 State Road 7 South. A Boca Raton financial adviser who faked his death last year, setting off an expensive and pointless U.S. Coast Guard rescue mission, pleaded guilty on Monday to communicating a false distress message. Under the terms of his plea agreement, Richard Winsor Ohrn, 46, has agreed he owes $1 million in restitution for the cost of the search. He is under court order to sell his Estuary Drive home and reveal details of all his assets to the government before he is sentenced in October. Meander past the pergola, through the garden’s 97 plots, and you’ll find a 1 1/2-acre organic garden of fruits, vegetables, flowers, plants and trees in the heart of Boca Raton. The Boca Raton Community Garden has grown from 50 plots first planted in 2011 to one of the largest community gardens in the state of Florida with a compost site, a native wildflower garden and a sustainable-foodgrowing forest. It’s a transformed land tucked between the downtown library and train tracks, where gardeners of all levels congregate to refine their green thumbs. It’s where aromas permeate (one of the strongest being mint), and where children chase butterflies and a young professional goes on his lunch break to unwind. Heizer Media Group

All Politics is Local There’s an old saying, “all politics is local.” But, there is no more “local” than municipal politics. The City of Boca Raton is fortunate to have attracted a steady stream on intelligent residents from within our community, willing to step up and serve as Mayor and members of our City Council. So much of what touches us each day, from washing our face to commuting along our streets is impacted by decisions made by the City Council. Public safety, economic development and zoning are all decisions made at the local level. Term limits have played their anticipated role in creating openings for new candidates to replace those required to periodically step aside making it even more critical that we continue to attract people with the temperament and intelligence necessary to address a broad range of municipal issues. The decision to run can be tempered by the realization that service will mean less time for family and work. There is also the need to have a thick skin both to weather an election campaign and to take a position on issues impacting our community knowing that few decisions will win unanimous praise from constituents. That being said, I would be less than truthful if I did not say that, for the most part, this is the most fulfilling job I have ever tackled. Each and every day I am honored to represent our community both at Council Meetings and during the ceremonial activities both within and outside our city. So why, you ask, am I making this, admittedly self-serving, request that you to Vote YES on City of Boca Raton Question 2 (appearing on back of the August 30thballot)? Question 2, if approved by a majority of the votes cast, will increase the annual salary of the Mayor to $38,000 and members of the City Council to $28,000. It is worth noting that compensation for the Mayor and Council Members has not been increased since 1984 when the population was around 54,000. To-
day, the population of our city exceeds 90,000. With growth, greater burdens have been imposed on the Mayor and Council Members in order to properly attend to the affairs of the City. In addition to meeting as the City Council for twice monthly regular meetings and twicemonthly workshops (not to mention Special Meetings, Strategic Planning Sessions and Budget Hearings) the Mayor and Council meet as the Commissioners of the Community Redevelopment Agency, twice each month. The Mayor and Council members also represent our residents on various other boards and committees including the Metropolitan Planning Organization, PBC League of Cities, FL League of Cities, Palm Tran Service Board, Sober Home Task Force, and many others. The Mayor and Council Members periodically travel to West Palm Beach, Tallahassee and Washington DC to meet with and lobby our elected county, state and federal representatives on issues impacting home rule and our city’s residents. With a more realistic level of compensation, it is hoped the number of residents willing to run for office will continue to meet the needs of our city as term-limited incumbents are required to step aside. Boca Raton Question 2 is located on the back of the ballot, which is still available by mail, at 15 Early Voting locations within Palm Beach County (including the Boca Raton Downtown Library at 400 NW 2nd Ave) between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm, now through August 28th and at your assigned voting location on August 30th. If you don’t know where to cast your ballot, your voting location can be determined from the PBC Supervisor of Elections by going online to: www. PBCElections.org/PrecinctFinder.aspx Please take the few minutes necessary to cast your ballot for the August Primary between now and 7:00 pm on Tuesday August 30th and don’t forget to turn the ballot over to indicate if you approve the adoption of the Mayor and Council Members’ pay raise. Thank you!
Council Member Robert S Weinroth was first elected to the Boca Raton City Council in March 2014. He was re-elected to a full three-year term, without opposition, in March 2015. On March 31, 2015, Mr. Weinroth was elected to serve as Deputy Mayor, su1cceeding, term limited Deputy Mayor Constance Scott. He Is also a city representative on the Palm Beach Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) where Mayor Susan Haynie is currently Chair of this important forum which provides both long-range and short-term transportation planning for all of Palm Beach County. In addition, Mr. Weinroth was appointed to the Palm Tran Service Board and has served as an appointed member of the Boca Raton Airport Authority. Council Member Weinroth is married to Pamela with four boys and two dogs in their blended family.

Local Business Owner Erin Wright Running for the Boca Beach and Park District By Caylin Hirapara
Erin Wright is excited about running for office in Seat #3 of the Greater Boca Raton Beach and Parks District. The 37-year-old local business owner grew up in Boca and has lived here for most of her life. She has a BS in Biology from Stetson University, and an MS degree in Exercise Science from FAU, where she later worked in Environmental Health and Safety. She currently is the owner and administrator of Wright Way Florida, a local home inspection company which services any area between Jupiter and Miami. “As a local business owner and long time resident of over 30 years, I am deeply invested in the future of our community.” She owns the company along with her husband Steven, who is a Boca Raton firefighter. The two started the company with the mission to be the most honest and reliable home inspection company in the business. Wright commented that this experience as a local business will help her in a district seat. Erin Wright has been very interested in the Environment in Boca for many years. She worked at FAU’s environmental health and safety department after graduating from FAU. Prior to her beginning her own company, Wright worked as a LEED design consultant for an architecture firm, consulting people on environmentally friendly building. She says, “Being a LEED AP and having a passion for green living gives me a certain outlook and vision of the beach and parks.” This experience in the environmental community led her to run for office on the Boca Raton Green Living Advisory Board in 2011. As a member of the board, she
has the responsibility to develop a plan for increasing the awareness of the residents of the City to environmental sustainability as well as increasing the environmental activities by the residents. “Sustainability and integrating nature and the built environment is an important factor when determining what projects and improvements should be done and how.” Wright is running for office in an attempt to solve some of the problems that the Parks District has had since the last election. “Recently, I have seen the disconnect that has grown between the commission and the city.” Wright said about the District and the City Council, “I feel that having a new, fresh face on the commission that is familiar with the need and wants of the growing population of younger families within the district will make a big impact.” Issues such as the “Turf Wars” that took place earlier last year, and the disconnect between the City Council and the District have driven many of the candidates in this election to run for seats. Wright says that the city council and the parks commission need better communication to reach their shared goal of making Boca better for everyone. Erin Wright has two young sons who love the parks and beaches of Boca, just as she enjoyed Boca as a child. “I would not be who I am today if it wasn’t for the sports I played growing up at these parks…This is my chance to give back to the community that gave me so much.” The election for Boca Raton Greater Parks and Beach District Seats #1 and #3 will take place on August 30. For more information about Erin Wright’s campaign contact her at eriniswright4u@gmail.com.
How to Vote in the August 30th Elections
Election Day is no longer a one-day event. With Absentee (Vote-by-Mail) Ballots, early Voting and, of course, voting on the date designated for the counting of ballots, residents have ample opportunity to make their selections for the candidates and answer the ballot questions. For the August Primary, registered voters can still request an Absentee Ballot by going onto the Supervisor of Elections website at: https://www.pbcelections. org/genericform.aspx?id=7 Early Voting will run from Monday, August 15th – Sunday, August 28th between the hours of 10:00 am and 6:00 pm at any one of the 15 early voting locations within Palm Beach County. In Boca Raton, ballots can be cast at the Downtown Library (400 NW 2nd Ave Boca Raton FL 33432). For a complete list of early voting sites, go to: http://www.pbcelections.org/content. aspx?id=270 On Tuesday, August 30th,registered voters must go to their designated poll location. Due to redistricting, many precincts have changed. If you do not have a current voter ID card with your designated poll location, you can go to the Supervi-

sports Boca Raton FC Defeats Uruguay Kendall, Wins Second Straight APSL Title
After nearly a three-hour lightning delay Boca Raton FC was able to defeat Uruguay Kendall FC 2-1 in the American Premier Soccer League Championship to earn the club’s second consecutive title. “It was a hard-fought game,” said head coach Pedro Yunes. “Uruguay Kendall played a very strong and aggressive game, but, in the end the better team won.” After only 15 minutes of play, both teams were forced to leave the field as the referees called for a lighting delay, which lasted 30 minutes. At the resume of the game, both clubs continued to grind out and look for the elusive first goal to break the deadlock. Boca Raton got on the board in the 33rd minute after Xavier Silva scored his 11th goal of the season, adding to his APSL goal lead, after Jason Fitzgerald’s cross found his head and sent it between the keeper and the crossbar to give Boca the 1-0 lead. Uruguay Kendall came back minutes later with Mauro Grignola who battled his way through the stingy Boca Raton defense and earned a penalty kick in which Jona Andrade easily converted to lock the finals at one apiece. Both Boca Raton and Uruguay Kendall looked for the breakthrough throughout the rest of the match but both club were unable to get a goal and it looked as if the Finals would be heading to extra time. With less than 20 minutes left in the game, Fitzgerald’s perfectly-placed cross in the box found a wide open Giovanni DiMauro who headed the ball into the back of the net in the 83rd minute and propelled Boca Raton to their second

straight APSL Championship and third straight trophy in team history. The goal was DiMauro’s 8th of the season. “Hats off to Uruguay Kendall,” said team captain, Lewis Thompson. “They have a strong team and were very strong, physical, and passionate.” Boca Raton began the 2016 APSL Season with a 5-3 defeat to South Florida FC on May 15th, snapping a year-long unbeaten streak. However, Boca Raton fought back in the second game of the season and was able to defeat Miami Storm 3-1 to begin another unbeaten streak which has now reached nine games. The additions of key players such a Luizão and Amoroso was monumental to the club as these veterans helped the younger players in practice and passed down their extensive knowledge of the game to the younger generation. In the attacking side, Boca Raton was carried by Silva and DiMauro who combined for 19 of Boca Raton’s 34 goals this season, the striking duo were 1st and 2nd, respectively, in the APSL Golden Boot Standings. However, despite all the firepower this season, Boca Raton’s defense was the anchor of the team, allowing only 11 goals this season with a backline of Thompson, Luizão, Fitzgerald, David Adejunmobi, and Gabriel Bravo. “We had a great group of guys this year,” says president Douglas Heizer. “There were setbacks in the start of the season, but we stuck together and in the end of the season we have not only become back to back champions but more importantly we became a close family.”
First Week of Camp Complete for the FAU Owls Football
By: Stephanie Fonseca
Amidst the typical bipolar Florida weather, FAU football completed their first week of their preseason practice camp this past Friday. FAU held their first preseason practice on a sunny Florida morning of August 5. For the first week of preseason, they practiced without pads and separated the team by offense and defense and colored jerseys. The offense and special teams wore red, as the defense wore white and the quarterbacks wore their green jerseys. The first few preseason practices brought a lot of enthusiasm and good competition between the offense and the defense. The defense kept their focus and gave the offense and the alternating quarterbacks Driskel and Parr some trouble when defensive backs Shelton Lewis and Ocie Rose both caught interceptions off of tip offs. FAU’s offense was known in the past for their ability to run the ball, however in the pursuit of becoming a more well rounded team, on media day Offensive Coordinator Travis Trickett explained that they have been throwing the ball a lot more. In the face of changing the way they play Tricket also said, “As far as install has gone, we have thrown a lot at them. They have done it. It is going well.” In retrospect to the previous seasons, Head Coach Charlie Partridge explained how this preseason has been different. “The guys [are] holding each other accountable and some position groups [continue] to improve from the spring,” said Head Coach Partridge on media

day. It’s been three years since Head Coach Charlie Partridge came down to South Florida and brought upon the change that FAU Football needed. Although the past two years were rebuilding years, they were extremely promising. The FAU Owls were giving big name football colleges such as the University of Miami and University of Florida some trouble, but failed to close out games as strong as they started them. FAU put themselves on the map and with a new season, comes lessons learned and a more unified team. Defensive Coordinator Roc Bellantoni, has been is proud of the team first culture that they have been building and how unified they have come to be. “We have a great group of assistants on the sideline keeping those guys together, keeping their minds in it, and helping each other to be a selfless person. Helping your buddy, who is out on the field, get through it is helping all of them get through it. I’m really proud of that. I didn’t know that [ the players were celebrating on the sidelines for play on the field]. I’m so entrenched in practice, I didn’t know, but I’m glad to hear they are bonding together and celebrating for one another,” said Coach Roc. On Aug. 10 the Owls had their first full pad practice and head into their second week of preseason camp. Despite the tropical depression passing through South Florida, the FAU Owls are optimistic and have their sights set on their home season opener against Southern Illinois on Sept 3 at 6 p.m.

A Promising Future for Boca Fall Sports
By: Stephanie Fonseca
Several schools from Boca Raton were the team to look out for in the Fall sports for the 2015-16 season. The local football giant Atlantic High of Delray went head to head against Boca High in the Region semi-finals. Boca High had just gained confidence in how good they were but fell to Atlantic. But Atlantic High football couldn’t stand up to the competition and lost to Flanagan High of Pembroke Pines who went on to be Class 8A State Champions.
www.bocaratontribune.com
Looking into the new season to come, Boca High Wildcats football team now knows and believes in the potential that they have and in the 2016-2017 season can be a force to be reckoned with. In volleyball West Boca High had a very promising 2015-2016 season however met their match in the Region Semifinal game, where they lost to St. Thomas Aquinas High who went on to win it all for Class 7A. Also the Boca Christian girls volleyball team, for the second year in-a-row made it to the final 4. However again came up short to Lake Worth Christian where twins Hannah and Kendall Berry went head-to-head. Lake Worth Christian went on to win the Class 2A State Championship but Boca Christian Head Coach Len Visser believes in three times the charm and promises that they will knock on the State Championship door again. Lastly in Cross Country, Boca Christian’s Tucker Hindle was proud to bring back the first State Championship for the city of Boca Raton. Not only was it the first state champion for the school, but Hindle was the first boy in Boca Raton to win the Cross Country State Championship. In retrospect, the 2015-2016 fall season was very promising but looking ahead the future looks even brighter for the city of Boca Raton, with all schools with their sights set on a State Championship.
