Community FAU Receives $5 Million Gift from Phil and Susan Smith
‘Cans for Cities’ to Benefit FAU’s Beyond Food Program By: Kelsie Weekes
By: James Hellegard A leading Broward County businessman who developed a chain of successful car dealerships has given his alma mater a generous multimillion-dollar gift to further its College of Business. Florida Atlantic University officially announced a $5 million gift from Phil and Susan Smith to establish The Phil Smith Center for Free Enterprise at FAU’s College of Business. The main tower at the College will be named Phil Smith Hall in honor of the FAU alumnus. The Phil Smith Center for Free Enterprise will support the vision and strategic plan of the College of Business, adding chaired professorships and supporting research and educational programs for faculty members and students. The Center will also support distinguished visiting faculty along with a lecture series and other educational programs focused on the principles of free enterprise and how those principles affect growth and prosperity. Faculty will conduct research and develop programs based on the business philosophy and principles that have guided Smith over his career. “I feel strongly that education is the great equalizer, and my experiences at FAU helped build the foundation I needed to become an entrepreneur,” Smith said. “Education encompasses the formal fundamentals taught in the classroom, the social interaction learned from classmates and professors, while learning the ability to reason and analyze. Having been exposed to all of these areas during my time at FAU helped me refine the same skills during my long business career.” A native South Floridian, Smith graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in finance in 1969 from FAU’s College of Business. He is president and CEO of Phil Smith Management,
Inc., operating 11 automobile dealership locations representing 25 franchises in Florida and North Carolina; as well as the Coral Ridge Country Club. He has more than 30 years of experience managing auto dealerships and built his organization from the ground up, starting from his first equity venture in a Toyota dealership in Homestead in 1980. “As a young married man in the 1960s, Phil Smith commuted to FAU while successfully managing the demands of work and school to become a member of one of our earliest graduating classes. In later years, Phil was prominent in helping to establish FAU as Broward’s university,” said FAU President John Kelly. “Through Phil and Susan’s generosity, future generations of working professionals will carry on that legacy at FAU.” A member of the FAU Foundation Board, Smith was named a distinguished alumnus of the College of Business in 2015. The Smiths also continuously give back to the community through their active involvement with the Humane Society of Broward County; Cystic Fibrosis Foundation; American Cancer Society; Holy Cross Hospital; Northwood University; Nova Southeastern University; Orange Bowl Committee and Junior Achievement. “Phil Smith’s career demonstrates the success that is possible in the American free enterprise system – what entrepreneurs can build when they do the right things, and do them well.” said Daniel Gropper, Ph.D., dean of FAU’s College of Business. “Through this generous gift, generations of students at FAU will have the opportunity to learn the value of these fundamental principles. We are proud to have Phil Smith Hall as part of the College of Business.”
Florida Atlantic University faculty, staff and students who find a parking ticket on their windshield this week can hold on to their money. Today through Friday, Aug. 26, the FAU community can pay their parking citation with a non-perishable food item. The program, dubbed “Cans for Cites,” is sponsored by Student Government (SG), the Weppner Center for LEAD and Service-Learning, and Parking and Transportation Services. Each can of food collected will benefit FAU’s Beyond Food program and Boca Helping Hands. “This program is extraordinary because it not only benefits staff and students that receive parking tickets, but more importantly, it benefits our students in need,” said Michael
Cairo, president of SG. Citations of $25 or less are eligible to be waived as part of the program. Exclusions include citations for parking on the grass, sidewalks, crosswalks or a late citation past the 14-day period. Any citation meeting the criteria and issued during the program dates must be paid for with the non-perishable canned good by Friday, Aug. 26 at 5 p.m. Cans should be brought to FAU’s Parking and Transportation, located in the Student Support Services building (SU-80), Boca Raton campus. The program will only take place at the Boca campus. For more information, visit www.fau.edu/ dean/beyondfood orwww.bocahelpinghands. org/home

Elections Have Consequences, Voters Should Participate. Now that the primary election is in our rear mirror, congratulations are in order to the winners, and thank you to those who voted. Let us not forget those contestants who did not fare as well. I applaud your desire to get involved in public service. If you are so moved, keep hope alive, your day may just come. I was so incensed at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday when I called a friend, who has since slipped into the ‘former friend’ status, to what her experience was at the polls, only to learn that she missed the opportunity to vote, because she “thought the polls closed at 8.” I shook my head in dismay. But I am not surprised. Over the last 30 days, I have heard so many ‘justifications’ why eligible Americans would not and did not vote. There were those who said they could not get away from work to vote, to which I said, Nonsense. We had 14 days of early voting and if we truly wanted to vote, we also could have done so by
absentee. All one had to do was dial 561656-6200 or email absentee@pbcelections.org and just say “Mail me a ballot.” Supervisor Susan Bucher would have done so on her dime. And then there were those who did not even know there was a primary election. “Isn’t the election in November?” one asked me. As I have opined here before, as United States citizens, we have the right to elect leaders at local, state and federal levels. Voting is a true privilege — but unfortunately, many Americans take it for granted. But there is an opportunity for redemption. If you were one of those who did not make it to the polls on time or is not registered to vote, you still have time for the general election in November. Although the primary races did not garner the level of attention as the presidential election will, Tuesday’s outcome will shape the quality of life here in Palm Beach County. You have certainly heard
the phrase “every vote counts.” Let me remind you it is true. Voters in Boca Raton narrowly approved a pay hike for our local elected officials. There has been a brouhaha over whether they deserved a raise. Well, the voters have spoken and that is the law of the land now. Let us look at the positive side, with the mayor now earning $38,000 and council members earning $28,000, maybe this will entice some more public-spirited people to get involved in the public service. After all, not a bad part-time gig for a stay-at-home mom, or a retiree who thinks he or she can operate independently - without being influenced by developers. Hopefully we will see the democratic process at work. Voters also gave the nod to fill vacancies on the city council, including the office of mayor, by special election for the unexpired term. The special election would be generally with 90 days of the vacancy. If the scheduled election date is within 150 days of the vacancy,
election would be on scheduled date. In two months, we will be back at the polls for the presidential elections. It does not matter what party, if any, you are affiliated with. What matters is that you vote because the candidates you elect will represent you at the discussion table. Your elected officials create laws and decide how much taxes you will pay. So by not voting, you are giving up your chance to have a say in what happens in your community. The Boca Raton Tribune does not endorse candidates. However, we will tell you who your options are and what their stances are as we approach the Nov. 8 general election. We encourage voters to do their own homework and think through how the options would benefit their communities. Above all, be sure to vote. It is your responsibility as well as your right. C. Ron Allen can be reached at crallen@delraybeachtribune.com or 561-665-0151.
POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.
Be Decisive, But Not Impulsive! Every human action, however small, requires thoughtful planning. Even when a decision needs to be more immediate, on account of its sudden appearance, there’s still a need of time for reflexion before something is done; in all our actions we are to be made with the knowledge of what they full entail, and what their consequences will be! When such factors are sufficiently ascertained, one must act decisively, but never impulsively. The decisiveness follows a road map, while the impulsiveness most often leads to disaster because key issues will remain untouched, for the detriment of the final outcome!
Sadly, too many people are more aggressive than they should. They act without thinking, without the needed attention for the consequences, whatever they might be! It’s good to be aggressive, in the best sense the word connotes, but only if it is informed aggressiveness. Impulsiveness is, unfortunately the manner many people act, only to regret later on, sometimes in the midst of unnecessary distress which their impulsiveness has caused. Some persons may seek refuge in the argument that this is the way they are and have always been, namely, they act with a sense of urgency. Yet, there is
a major difference between acting with a sense of urgency and doing things impulsively. The letter entails lack of control regarding the things one says and especially the manner one acts! Those who equate aggressiveness with decisiveness are usually wrong, because being decisive, as alluded to above, involves thoughtfulness preceding action, rather than the sudden outbursts which aggressiveness manifests, often destroying things even before starting the process. Every individual needs repairs throughout life, so as to achieve their goals efficiently and effectively, at the
right time, with the proper tools, in the most reasonable and positive ways. Such personal repairs represent “tune-ups,” “overhauls,” and other such interventions in one’s personal conduct and practice! When one practices caution and thoughtfulness in all deeds, major defects shall be avoided, such as burn-out which is associated with loss of meaning rather than a mere fatigue from which anyone can easily recover. Thus, avoid whatever may cause unnecessary hardships which make things nearly impossible to return to normal! And it is the normal that leads to the significant when it keeps on being improved!
Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

2016 UNITED STATES DISTRIBUTION NOTICE:
■ TRYING TO KEEP UP: Rapid shipments of heavy packages containing Vault Bricks loaded with valuable .999 solid U.S. State Silver Bars are flowing around the clock from the private vaults of the Lincoln Treasury to U.S. State residents who call 1-866-964-3375 to beat the 48-hour deadline.
U.S. State Silver Bars go to residents in 3 states
U.S. residents who find their state listed below in bold get first dibs at just the $57 minimum set for state residents while all non state residents must pay $134, if any silver bars remain NATIONWIDE – The phone lines are ringing off the hook. That’s because U.S. State Silver Bars sealed away in State Vault Bricks are being handed over to FL, AL and GA residents at just the state minimum set by the Lincoln Treasury for the next 2 days. This is not a misprint. For the next 2 days residents who find their state on the Distribution List to the right in bold are getting individual State Silver Bars at just the state minimum of $57 set by the Lincoln Treasury. That’s why everyone should be taking full Vault Bricks loaded with five U.S. State Silver Bars before they’re all gone. And here’s the best part. Every FL, AL and GA resident who gets at least two Vault Bricks is also getting free shipping and free handling. That’s a real steal because all other state residents must pay over six hundred dollars for each State Vault Brick. Just a few weeks ago, nobody knew that the only U.S. State Silver Bars locked away in the private vaults of the Lincoln Treasury would be allocated to the Federated Mint for a limited release to residents in 3 states. Every single one of the 50 U.S. State Silver Bars are date numbered in the order they ratified the Constitution and were admitted into the Union beginning in the late 1700s. “As Executive Advisor to the Lincoln Treasury I get paid to deliver breaking news. So, for anyone who hasn’t heard yet, highly collectable U.S. State Silver Bars are now being handed over at just the state minimum set by the Lincoln Treasury to residents in 3 states who beat the offer deadline, which is why I pushed for this announcement to be widely advertised,” said Mary Ellen Withrow, the emeritus 40th Treasurer of the
United States of America. “These bars are solid .999 pure fine silver and will always be a valuable precious metal which is why everyone is snapping up as many as they can before they’re all gone,” Withrow said. There’s one thing Withrow wants to make very clear. State residents only have two days to call the Toll Free Order Hotlines to get the U.S. State Silver Bars. “These valuable U.S. State Silver Bars are impossible to get at banks, credit unions or the U.S. Mint. In fact, they’re only being handed over at state minimum set by the Lincoln Treasury to FL, AL and GA residents who call the Toll Free Hotline before the deadline ends two days from today’s publication date”, said Timothy J. Shissler, Executive Director of Vault Operations at the private Lincoln Treasury. To make it fair, special Toll Free Overflow Hotlines have been set up to ensure all residents have an equal chance to get them. Rapid shipments to state residents are scheduled to begin with the first calls being accepted at precisely 8:30am today. “We’re bracing for all the calls and doing everything we can to make sure no one gets left out, but the U.S. State Silver Bars are only being handed over at just the state resident minimum set by the Lincoln Treasury for the next two days or until they’re all gone, whichever comes first. For now, residents can get the U.S. State Silver Bars at just the state minimum set by the Lincoln Treasury as long as they call before the order deadline ends,” confirmed Shissler. “With so many state residents trying to get these U.S. State Silver Bars, lines are busy so keep trying. All calls will be answered,” Shissler said. ■

The woman told investigators she had left her friend’s apartment at Century Village in Deerfield Beach and was heading home. She said she turned from Hillsboro Blvd onto Powerline Road heading north. As she approached Palmetto Park Road she noticed a silver Nissan alongside her vehicle and got a strange feeling. The victim continued heading north and stopped at the red light at the intersection of Glades Road and Powerline. The vehicle, occupied by at least four black males, pulled up next to her in the adjacent lane. She said one of the males exited the vehicle from the
front passenger side and attempted to gain entry into the car by pulling on the door handle and pounding on the window. At that point, the victim said the suspect pulled out a handgun and fired one shot into the car. As the victim saw the gun she shielded her face. The bullet went through her hand and into her cheek. The victim immediately began driving away as the suspects continued to follow her for a short time. They fired at least one more shot at her car before heading east on Yamato. The victim drove directly to Delray Medical Center. The suspect who fired the shot is described as a black male in his late 20’s or early 30’s, wearing a light colored short sleeve shirt, dark shorts, white socks and dark shoes. The suspect vehicle was described as a silver Nissan. If anyone has information about this incident, please call Detective Tim Kurdys at 561-338-1377 or Palm Beach County Crime Stoppers at (800) 458TIPS. You can also text a tip anonymously. In the body of the text, type “BRPD” plus your message and send it to 274637 (CRIMES).

Republican nominee Donald Trump leads Democrat Hillary Clinton in Florida 43 to 41 percent, with Libertarian Gary Johnson taking 8 percent, Green Party candidate Jill Stein 2 percent and 5 percent undecided, according to a new survey by the Florida Atlantic University Business and Economics Polling Initiative. In the Florida race for the U.S. Senate, Democrat Patrick Murphy and Republican Marco Rubio lead by wide margins before their respective party primaries on Tuesday, Aug. 30, with Rubio leading Murphy 44 percent to 39 percent in a potential general election matchup in November. For the presidential race, both candidates are underwater in terms of their favorability ratings in Florida. Trump scores a 41 percent favorable and 56 percent unfavorable rating, while Clinton has 40 percent favorable and 58 percent unfavorable rating. Clinton, meanwhile, has a loyalty score of 90 percent (those who have a favorable opinion and are voting for her), while Trump has a loyalty score of 94 percent. Trump leads among males 46 percent to 36 percent, but trails Clinton among women 45 percent to 41 percent. Independents are voting for Trump by a wide margin of 47 percent to 26 percent. Clinton is beating Trump in three of the four age groups. She leads with 18 to 34 year olds by three points, 38 to 35 percent; 55- to 74-year-old voters 45 to 43 percent; while those over 75 provide her the strongest support at 60 to 34 percent. Trump leads among 35- to 54-year-old voters 53 to 30 percent. Trump’s strongest regional support is in the western part of Florida where he leads 52 to 34 percent, and in the north at 47 to 32 percent. Trump also leads in the central region 44 to 36
percent. Clinton’s support is in South Florida, where she leads 57 to 30 percent. The top issue for voters was dissatisfaction with government at 29 percent, followed by jobs at 18 percent; immigration at 13 percent; and ISIS at 12 percent. The top quality for voters is experience at 27 percent; followed by Commander-in-Chief at 16 percent; trustworthiness at 15 percent; and focus on the economy at 14 percent. Wanting an outsider was mentioned by 12 percent of respondents. Kevin Wagner, Ph.D., associate professor of political science at FAU and a research fellow of the Initiative, said that despite the national trend, the presidential race in Florida remains close and is within the survey’s margin of error. “The fact that both Mr. Trump and Secretary Clinton are significantly upside down in their favorability ratings could make it difficult for either to move substantially ahead,” he said. “Clinton likely got a boost from the fact that Floridians chose experience as the top quality they are looking for in their presidential candidate. But, Floridians also chose dissatisfaction with government as their top issue, which likely favors Mr. Trump.” The Florida poll was conducted Aug. 19-22. The polling sample was a random selection of registered voters. The Democratic primary consisted of 364 registered Democrat likely primary voters with a margin of error of +/-5.1 percent at a 95 percent confidence level. The Republican primary consisted of 327 registered Republican likely primary voters with a margin of error of +/5.4 percent at a 95 percent confidence level. The General election poll consisted of 1,200 registered likely voters with a margin of error of +/-2.7 percent at a 95 percent confidence level.

“Mia Madre: and “Little Men” Opened Sept. 2. Opened in limited release last Friday, Sept. 2 were two small independent films. My favorite is “Mia Madre” (My Mother) an Italian film by Nanni Moretti, and the other is “Little Men,” set in Brooklyn, New York, starring two fresh-faced kids. “Mia Madre” stars Margherita Buy as a movie director named Margherita. She is in the middle of shooting a film about worker unrest and rebellion in Italy. Nothing is going right. To add to Margherita’s problems her mother Ada (Giulia Lazzarini), who is hospitalized with a mysterious malady. Margherita is also having problems with her teenage daughter Livia (Beatrice Mancini) and her son-to-be ex-husband Vittoria (Enrico Lanniello). If that weren’t trouble enough, her Italian-American star, Barry Huggins (John Turturro) proves to be insufferable and incompetent. Yes, this is a comedy, but it is also a drama, for poor old Ada is dying. If you like the Italian hyper-dramatic view of life, you may appreciate this movie, which plays exclusively at FAU’s Living Room Theaters. Two and a half stars
“Little Men” is about two Brooklyn teenagers who aspire for something better; namely a place at the La Guardia School for the Performing Arts, the school that inspired “Fame.” Jacob or Jake Jardine (Theo Taplitz) already show promise as an artist at age 13. His best friend Tony (Michael Barbieri) wants to be an actor. Jake’s grandfather has just died, leaving his father Brian (Greg Kinnear) with the challenge of suddenly becoming a landlord in a neighborhood that is gentrifying. Tony’s mother, Leonor Cavelli (Paulina Garcia) is a longtime tenant in one of Brian’s buildings. It is hinted she had an especially cozy relationship with Brian’s father. The bottom line is Leonor has been paying far less than market value for her little sewing shop. Brian’s wife (Jennifer Ehle) urges him to adjust the rent to reflect true value. Thereby hangs the conflict. Leonor simply can’t afford the rent. Jake and Tony are dealing not only with the challenges of growing up, but enduring economic changes that challenge their friendship. Ira Sachs (“Love is Strange”) wrote and directs this modern parable of life in the big city. Two and a half stars

Congratulations to all the winners in Tuesday’s primary election. Labor Day weekend will be the last time for a while that visitors to Boca Raton’s Sugar Sand Park will be allowed to ride the iconic carousel. Park officials plan to close the ride for three weeks starting Sept. 6 and reopen it the week of Sept. 26, though they have not committed to a date. The opening will depend on the work and weather. Crews will be taking apart the carousel, at 300 S. Military Trail, to fix its inner workings. The $24,800 repairs are necessary to make sure the carousel is safe. The district says it has chosen to wait until after Labor Day to close the carousel because of its popularity over holiday weekends. Riders are not in danger, but the district is taking a proactive measure to prevent accidents, injuries and long-term closure of the ride. Preparing cities for gun violence, natural disasters and the Zika virus is among Boca Raton Mayor Susan Haynie’s top priorities as she steps into her new role as president of the Florida League of Cities. More than 400 city leaders from across the state elected Haynie to the one-year gig with the league, which promotes selfgovernment at the local level. She was inducted into the position last week. Haynie says she plans to roll out a “Safe Cities, Safe Florida” initiative aimed at providing city leaders with training, resources and partnerships to ensure they are equipped to handle tragedy before it strikes. Emily Gentile filed for the open Boca City Council seat currently held by term limited Michael Mullagh. Local Thanks, an operating company of Loyalty SuperStore announced a marketing partnership with Today’s Restaurant News. TRN is the go to source for the Florida and Georgia restaurant and food service industry. Local Thanks is building a platform of marketing services for restaurants in
those two states specifically tailored for TRN. It is about time that restaurants do more with coupons than only promote a single visit and our Local Thanks platform is all about frequency. TRN will introduce this new platform in September at both the Georgia and Florida restaurant shows. . It is an outreach program from the restaurant to existing and new customers, virtually grabbing them by the collar and bring them into the restaurant. The market platform includes a private branded mobile app, coupon website, customer incentives, social media, email, text and push messaging. It includes a cash back internet mall that is funded by over 1200 national merchants that their customers shop at every day. It even includes an interactive scratch off program and virtual punch card that promotes repeat visits. Boca Raton’s Planning & Zoning board has approved a site plan for Lynn University, clearing the way for a new student center and adding more parking and pedestrian walkways to the Boca Raton campus. The three-story, 65,267-square-foot building will be in the middle campus. Rick Newman is known for his lavish Halloween and Christmas laser light displays in the Old Floresta neighborhood, and a robot collection he shares, lately with Boca Raton Elementary School. So he said he felt compelled to put out a frank assessment of his failing health this time last year. Now Newman has announced he went from terminal cancer to remission. Is Bigger Always Better? When a business gets started, the hope is that it will attract customers or clients. But once that’s assured, the question becomes, “How can we grow?” followed by, “How much should we grow?” While answers to both questions vary by company, growth is rarely regarded as a bad thing. The bigger the better, right? More profits. Greater impact. Bigger brand. Sometimes, however, it might be wise to ask a different question: “How big is too big?” This came to mind after reading a post by marketing blogger Seth Godin. In it he cited a huge hotel in a large U.S.A. city that has more than 1,000 rooms. I have a good idea of which one he was referring to, since I have been to one much like he described on a few occasions. We might be tempted to wonder, what could be bad about a lavish, ornate hotel with more than 1,000 rooms? As Godin pointed out, the hotel check-in line was always long, requiring a lengthy wait for guests arriving or preparing to depart. The fully equipped fitness center was usually filled, as early as 5 a.m., meaning the likelihood of getting a rigorous workout that fits into one’s schedule is far from certain. And as for personal service, there is virtually no possibility of any hotel staff member knowing, much less greeting, a guest by name or even recognizing their face. Establishments like that become big because they generate money. Shareholders are happy. Their financial resources allow them to offer amenities smaller establishments could only dream about. But as Godin asked, is being bigger most important, or is striving to become better, regardless of size, the key? I sometimes shop at the so-called “bigbox stores,” where they can buy large quantities of products and offer them
more cheaply than competitors. That has some appeal. But invariably, these stores are not known for customer service. Sometimes finding an employee to ask for help seems impossible. So for me as the consumer, bigger definitely is not always better. That is not to say growth, and becoming bigger, is universally bad. But it should be pursued with caution, and with a clearly thought-out plan on how to avoid letting “bigness” undermine the fundamental values that helped the business become established and prosperous from the start. Here are principles from the Bible, some of them very familiar, that might be helpful to consider: Service should always remain paramount. The best companies are known for excellent service, as well as products. When people are served well, they become repeat customers. “Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:28). Commitment to meet or even exceed expectations. In business we always hope for a profitable day, but sometimes committing to doing the best for the customer is the greatest reward, with the highest return rate.“…’It is more blessed to give than to receive’” (Acts 20:35). Focus on the mission. We can entertain great dreams of growth, but at what point will growth make it difficult to remain true to the corporate mission and values? “A discerning man keeps wisdom in view, but a fool’s eyes wander to the ends of the earth” (Proverbs 17:24).

sports FAU Starts the Season on the Right Foot
By: Stephanie Fonseca
Anticipations were high and Florida Atlantic University was ready to redeem themselves from last years rocky season. With a crowd just under 15,000 in the stands, FAU students anxiously awaited kickoff. It was a rough start for Southern Illinois (0-1), and FAU (1-0) didn’t think twice about exploiting gaps in SIU’s defense. Southern started with the ball but quickly passed possession to FAU. Two minutes into the game, Greg “Buddy” Howell put FAU on the board with 48yard touchdown run, the longest rushing play of his career. SIU quickly responded on the next possession but FAU reacted. On a miraculous catch, which was tipped off by three SIU defenders, found the hands of redshirt freshman receiver Tavaris Harrison for a 85-yard touchdown. The first half was a back and forth between possessions. FAU started ahead, but lost their lead at the half with a 48 yard field goal, scored by Southern Illinois’ Austin Johnson. “We really didn’t have to get after them after halftime. We reminded them to do the things we witnessed and do so well at all football camp,” said FAU Head Coach Charlie Partridge about being down at the half . To many FAU students, the first half looked all too familiar. But to those who left at halftime missed a second half dominated by FAU, with a 17-point lead that went unanswered until the final moments of the game. Although Southern Illinois tried getting back in the game, a missed kick by Austin Johnson didn’t help. But FAU was showing that this wasn’t going to be a game they would let go of. A punt from Southern Illinois led to one of FAU’s longer possessions. Driskel, who was 23 of 31 passing for 287 yards with two2 touchdown passes

A Game of Comebacks By: Stephanie Fonseca Photos By:Damon Higgins Boca Raton High School found itself in a shootout this weekend as they went back and forth versus Palm Beach Gardens in a game of comebacks. Quarterback Micah Leon led the Bobcats. Boca High was leading with a score of 21-7. But a 14 point lead wasn’t enough to discourage the Palm Beach Gardens Gators. The Gators fought back and led the Bobcats 28-24 at the end of the third quarter. A penalty with little time left on the clock was the achilles heel for Palm Beach Gardens, as the Gators gave up a penalty which left the Boca Bobcats at the 18 yard line. The Bobcats came out on top 30-28.
and one rushing touchdown of his own, got into his rhythm and found a balance between the usual running game and made the passing game look natural for the Owls. With most scoring plays by FAU lasting under a minute, the Owls didn’t need much time with the ball as the offense, led by Driskel, Howell and Bussey were efficient and the offensive line was able to open up gaps in Southern Illinois’ defense leading straight towards the end zone. “When you trust in something, you have a great outcome. It’s me just trusting my read and trusting my guys. They opened it up for me and I made my read. [It’s all about] trusting the program, trusting the stuff that we’re taught day in and day out, and just doing your job,” said Howell about his explosive start which led to his two touchdowns. The Owls defensive line held their own versus a potent Southern Illinois team that would not quit. And in the last minutes, with a QB change, Sam Straub reacted with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Newquist. “They did a nice job[…] I was proud of their effort. Our D-line kept getting push. I thought Driskel made a lot of plays with his feet where we couldn’t tackle him. We have to tackle better. I mean Driskel is a big strong kid, but we could have got him down a couple times,” said SIU Head Coach Nick Hill. FAU didn’t need much time, most scoring runs were on minimal plays wasting the least amount of the clock as possible. The offense was efficient and exposed Southern Illinois’ weaknesses and the defensive line made it hard for Southern Illinois to come back in the game. Being the first time since 2012 that the Owls began the season with a win, FAU left Saturday’s game on a sweet note. Now they prepare for their first away game of the season and first-ever away game versus The University of Miami, this Saturday, Sept. 10 at 6 p.m. at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. www.bocaratontribune.com
